St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off Saturday Roesch Auto Group serves as Grand Marshal

By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

Spring is indeed on its way and a big indicator is the upcoming occasion for the wearin’ o’ the green which takes place Saturday, March 7. Yes, it’s time for the 24th Annual Elmhurst St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which steps off promptly at 12 noon. This year’s Grand Marshal is the Roesch Auto Group, which has provided vehicles for the parade since its first year – you’ll find more information about the Roesch Auto Group in a special section inside this issue. The list of entries can be viewed inside this issue upfront in the news section. The special section is always filled with photos from last year, so look for your friends and neighbors — or your-

self. As usual, the parade will step off at 12 noon from Wilson Street on Spring Road and will march northward toward the railroad tracks just beyond Silverado Grill. But you’ll likely want to show up earlier than that not only to park but also to take advantage of the musical entertainment that will be going on prior to the parade. Live musical entertainment is expected to be performed at the Prairie Path, in front of Ahlgrim Funeral Home and at McKinley and Spring. Then enjoy a few hours of bands, City fire and public works vehicles, City officials, Scout troops, floats, representatives from various business and organizations in town and those fabulous Irish dancers. Some of the mascots from Chicago’s pro sports teams are expected as well like Southpaw, Benny the Bull and Tommy the Hawk. The Elmhurst Armpit Orchestra will be on hand this year as always. See their story inside, as they salute Elmhurst’s museums this year.

The Elmhurst Independent will be there too, so smile as we drive by because we might just take your picture. Hosted by Elmhurst’s own John R. Quigley and Ken Bartels, Comcast “Elmhurst Our Kind of Town” will be filming the parade for viewing later in the month. After March 17, it will broadcast on Comcast Channel 6 and AT&T Universe Channel 99. It can also be found at ElmhurstTV.com. According to the cable schedule, it will be broadcast: Wednesdays at 5 p.m. Sundays at 7:30 p.m. (starting Wed 3/14) Saturdays at 7 p.m. (starting Sat 3/21) Enjoy the day and take it easy on the green beer.

Council votes down stoplight at York & Diversey Despite neighbors’ efforts, aldermen reject measure 13-1

By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

Former Mayor and current County Board member Pete DiCianni was the first to speak during public forum at the Elmhurst City Council meeting on Monday, March 2. On the agenda later in the meeting was a report from the Public Works & Buildings (PW&B) Committee on a Traffic Signal Warrant Analysis performed near York Street and Diversey Av-

enue, where a stoplight and other safety measures had been requested due to the number of accidents at the intersection. North side residents had come out in June of 2019, led by DiCianni, to request more safety measures, which resulted in the City hiring an engineering company out of Sugar Grove to perform the Warrant Analysis. DiCianni, who grew up on the north side of Elmhurst, argued that

the Analysis only studied traffic patterns and didn’t take into account that there were school children, a senior residence, and numerous businesses in the area. “Come on, it’s just common sense,” he said. “How can we not protect our school children?” Then on Saturday, Feb. 15, a twocar collision occurred that reportedly
