Miscommunication discussed at long D-205 School Board meeting

Discussion about the lack of transparency and miscommunication by the administration of School District 205 about larger class sizes and the need

for more teachers at York High School went deeper than just those two topics.

Twenty people, parents and teachers, spoke for more than an hour during public comments at a School Board meeting on March 22. Statements, both positive and negative, were made about Superintendent David Moyer’s leadership and about the Board of Educa-

tion.

City reluctantly approves Golden Meadows flood plan Mulliner: grave concerns about Park District holding City hostage

“Reluctantly,” aldermen have approved the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) for storm

water detention at Golden Meadows Park.

After the approval, the IGA was sent to the Elmhurst Park District.

The vote was 13-1 with Bob Dunn (2nd Ward) casting the sole “nay” vote because he said the cost was too great. He noted that a report received from consultant Christopher Burke first

“I am not here to point fingers, nor am I saying which side is right or which side is wrong. If we don’t start working together everyone loses.”

She proposed that after Spring Break, a summit be convened with representatives from the PTA, Teachers Council, building administrators and School Board members. This group would outline effective communications procedures for all parties, according to Padberg.

Speaking in support of Dr. Moyer was resident Jennifer Rosenberg who said that the Board of Education hired an award-winning and transformational leader.

“You owe him the support for what he was hired to do,” she said. “We owe him a chance to be open and collaborative.

If we can’t work with him, we will struggle to find a qualified leader who wants to work in this District.”

“We cannot allow the concerns of some to drown out the voices of others and stifle

the curiosity of others,” commented resident Carol Snyder.

“Administrators and teachers are better equipped to examine the evidence.

“I hope that we can refrain from knee jerk reactions. We need to ask ourselves to be better human beings. I look forward to building bridges rather than roadblocks.”

On the other hand, citizen Lisa O’Halleran said District administrators have created angst. Employees are losing hope that things will get better and community members have lost confidence, she contended.

Joel Morris, a resident and former superintendent for District 205, stated that information is not being conducted in a transparent manner. Inevitably, he said, the result is misunderstanding and mistrust.

“I hope that that there is clear direction from the Board of Education with transparency to all stakeholders,” he said.

“They have the right to engage in a robust discussion about resolutions.”

That means the City and its taxpayers will spend $4.6 million to protect a total of 20 homes.

Mark Mulliner (7th Ward) said this vote was a difficult one for him but he voted to approve it because the residents really need the storm water detention.

But he said he had grave concerns about the Park District holding the City hostage.

Chris Healy (5th Ward) said

he felt the same way as Mulliner.

“I support this project reluctantly,” he said. “I am disappointed.”

Norm Leader (2nd Ward) said he agreed with every word spoken by Healy.

Kevin York (4th Ward) said he agreed with Healy, and that he supported the idea and voted for the motion and supported it “reluctantly.”

Previously an IGA was signed by both the City and the Park District for York Commons.

The City and Elmhurst School District 205 have also signed an IGA for flood detention at

Madison School.

At Golden Meadows there would be 14 acre-feet of detention to help 20 homeowners on Pine and Avon with flooding problems. The City will pay the full cost determined by three appraisers. If there are any additional costs, for example, if any environmental contamination is found, the City can walk away or negotiate those costs with the Park District.

“We have to take it or leave it,” said Marti Deuter (1st Ward), a member of the Public Works and Buildings PWB) Committee. “We want this project to get done.”

Park Board News…

Here’s what’s happening at the Elmhurst Park District • The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on March 23 at the district’s administrative building at 375 W. First Street. Commissioner Patricia Morissette-Moll was absent from the meeting.

• There were no comments from the public.

IGA approved by City • In providing a brief update of storm water issues, Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers stated the City of Elmhurst is continuing to work on the terms of an intergovernmental agreement with the park district that would allow the city to build a storm water detention basin at Golden Meadows Park. Rogers also said that the park district is awaiting engineering plans from the city regarding the finalization of the plans to build a storm water

basin at York Commons. The city and park district recently reached an intergovernmental agreement that will allow the city to build a basin in the west lobe of York Commons.

Still addressing flaws with registration software • The board meeting included a brief update on the district’s registration software system, which failed to perform at an acceptable speed during the first day of spring/summer registration on Feb. 20.

The district is working with its registration software vendor—Vermont Systems Inc.— to improve the process. The company has offered a week of onsite training at no charge to the district—a reported value of about $6,000. That onsite training will reportedly begin on April 4. The district recently published a request for proposal (RFP) to seek the services

of a consultant who would review the online registration process. The district received one response from a consultant who previously worked for Vermont Systems. Rogers said the district would engage that consultant, along with the district’s current network consultant. Rogers and Commissioner Kevin Graf said the district is making good progress in trying to identify the root causes of the problems with its registration software system.

t was just last Thursday, March 24, when Debbie Hamilton went to Dare Messina’s house to help her make up her face and get dressed to play the role of the Easter Bunny for the Elmhurst Kiwanis Club.

It was a tough blow for Hamilton to learn just four days later that Dare had passed away.

“She was my best friend and I couldn’t have asked for a better one,” said Hamilton, who was trying to stay busy all week so as not to break down and cry.

Dare was diagnosed with an illness within the past year that required brain surgery, the care of fine doctors, and a long convalescence before she was able to be back on her feet again.

“I got her back, that was the best thing,” Hamilton said. “When she first got sick, she wasn’t really ‘there’ anymore, I had to spend a lot of time just sitting there, or helping with basic needs. But then, she came back around, she was able to get out and about.”

Hamilton knew some people fall ill and never really “come back to normal” again, so she felt particularly blessed to have Dare back to her old self.

“I felt like I lost her but then I got her back, I got her back! “We were able to do all the things we used to do together.”

Dare had made dinner for Debbie on Monday, March 21, just last week.

“We sat up drinking wine and talking until about 10:30 at night,” Debbie recalled. “We talked about everything, everything on earth, just like we always had before.”

On Thursday, she was the Kiwanis Club Easter Bunny. On Sunday, word came that Dare had suffered a stroke; shortly after, she slipped away.

Funeral arrangements announced Born on July 4, 1947, Patricia Dare Messina, a 47-year resident of Elmhurst, passed away on March 27, 2016. She was the loving mother of John (Jen) Moore and Courtney (Scott) Braafhart; grandmother of Joey and Tabitha Moore and Sam, Chloe, Phia and Hailey Braafhart; dear daughter of Patricia and the late Joseph Messina; sister of Robbie (Ron) Hein, Joe (Annette) Messina and Cindy Messina; aunt and friend of many.

Visitation was scheduled for Thursday, March 31, 2016, from 3-8 p.m. at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst.

Always an award winner

Dare once quipped that her mother had been attending her award presentations ever since Dare was a Girl Scout. “Now I’m an adult and my poor mother STILL has to come out for these award ceremonies!” Dare laughed.

Active with Chamber, was 5th of only six women Chairs One person who will especially miss Dare on a business level and as a personal friend is Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce President & CEO John R. Quigley.

“Dare was akin to a beloved sister to me and countless others,” he said. “She was genuine and real and warm…an honest and good person that you welcomed to have around and gave thanks to be around. Her smile was infectious and she had a slightly mischievous glint in her eye. She is, in a word, irreplaceable and I will miss her greatly.”

As an award-winning realtor with L.W. Reedy Real Estate since 2007, Dare Messina twice served two three-year terms as a member of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s Board of Directors, first elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2005; then elected again in 2010 and re-elected in 2013.

She is a former Board Chair, who in 2007 became the fifth of only six female Chairs in the Chamber’s 86-year history (now nine in 98 years).

In 2008, she received the Chairman’s Award from Debra Klosterman for her service as Past Chair and Interim Treasurer.

She served as First Vice Chair and Chair of the Marketing Committee in 2006, and as Second Vice Chair and Chair of the Membership Committee in 2005. When not serving on the Executive Committee, she was a long-time member of the Membership Committee.

A Chamber member since 1997, Dare also served as a Chamber Ambassador since 2001. She has represented the Chamber with an Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 study and was a member of the College of DuPage Real Estate Advisory Committee (1998-01). Her 30-year career as an Elmhurst realtor includes service with Keller Williams Realty Results (2005-07) and RE/ MAX East-West (1986-2005). Dare has served on the Elmhurst Atrium Townhouse Association’s Board of Directors (including Secretary and Treasurer) since 1970, and is

“All of those wonderful qualities make a person a valuable real estate agent.”

As a flight attendant for 35 years with United Airlines, she served as Past CoDirector for the company’s United Way Campaign, before joining the real estate community in the 1980s while her children were still young.

“Dare was very active in the community, not only for her business, but as a young mother,” Reedy said. “She worked very hard and was always among the top producers in the office. She won numerous awards in the real estate community as well as in her other [endeavors].”

“She was always having a good day – ALWAYS,” he said.

“The good days, and the bad days, even going through her illness, she never seemed to have any second thoughts about what’s next, she always a positive approach to life.

Park Board to explore indoor sports facility Hires company to conduct market, feasibility study

At its recent meeting, the Elmhurst Park Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to accept the expenditure of $40,000 to engage Convention Sports and Leisure International to conduct a market and feasibility study for an indoor sports facility in Elmhurst.

The City of Elmhurst is expected to reimburse the park district for $20,000 of the expenditure.

In 2015, the park district solicited firms to assess the viability of an indoor sports facility, including aquatics, turf, gymnasiums and ice and received eight proposals by

the Dec. 18, 2015 deadline. A selection committee including the park district’s management team and representatives from the City of Elmhurst interviewed five different firms.

The committee chose Hunden Strategic Partners as the best fit for the project, but that firm’s fee proposal was $81,000, which was $41,000 more than the amount budgeted for the study. Rogers said the committee and Hunden Strategic Partners made a good-faith effort to work together but could not reach an agreement to reduce the fee and maintain the proposed scope of work.

The committee then negotiated an agreement with Convention, Sports and Leisure International for a not-to-exceed fee of $40,000.

bid of D & J Landscape, Inc., of Plainfield, as not a responsible bid. D & J Landscape, Inc. was one of six firms to submit a bid for the project, submitted the lowest bid—nearly $178,000.

Park district staff checked the company’s references and reportedly determined it did not have the necessary experience to complete the project.

Hacienda Landscaping, Inc. submitted the next lowest bid.

The district received positive references related to that company. In addition to accepting the base bid of about $181,000, the board voted to accept Hacienda Landscaping, Inc.’s bid of about $6,900 to replace the existing fence with a new split rail fence.

In approving the agreement with Hacienda Landscaping, the board also voted to purchase about $250,000 in play equipment and site furnishings from NuToys, and to use proceeds from the Gene Pomerance Trust distribution toward the playground redevelopment project at Butterfield Park. Pomerance, who passed away in 2014, served three terms on the Elmhurst Park District Board. In 2015, the district received an unrestricted donation of about $110,000 from Pomerance’s trust.

The redeveloped playground at Butterfield Park will feature a fully accessible playground—a Playground for Everyone—that encourage play for children with mobility challenges and developmental disabilities. The projected total cost of the playground redevelopment at But-

terfield Park is $600,000. The district’s 2016 budget includes $350,000 in funding for the project. The People for Elmhurst Parks Foundation (PEP) has so far raised about $165,000 toward the project. Pomerance, incidentally, was a founding member of PEP. Other resurfacing projects planned • The board also voted unanimously to award a seal coating and striping project bid to Professional Paving and Concrete Co. of Glen Ellyn in the amount of about $11,500. The project includes the seal coating and striping of the basketball court at Plunkett Park, the Berens Park paths around the Hub, a small connector path from Fair Avenue to the Illinois Prairie Path and the entire length of the Salt Creek Greenway Trail in Elmhurst.

Those stakeholders include Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205, Elmhurst College and several youth sports organizations.

And, as a former Kiwanian himself, Quigley knows the value of a good Easter Bunny.

“When the Easter Bunny for the Kiwanis Club’s annual Easter Seals photo session moved away, Dare immediately stepped into the costume and made the role her own,” he said. “It was inspiring to watch how the kids would light up around her.”

At least they did last Thursday for the last time with Dare.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery

March 22 A complainant at a local hospital told police that a suspect came to the emergency room complaining of severe headaches. The suspect requested a highly potent narcotic and the complainant told him she could not fulfill his request. After being evaluated the ER staff, it was determined there were no abnormalities so the requested narcotic was not administered to the suspect. Upon receiving his discharge papers, the suspect became agitated and pushed the complainant as he exited.

March 19 A victim near Lake and Route 83 told police that after a traffic incident in Addison at around 12:05 p.m., a male suspect with a female passenger followed the victim. The suspect drove in front of the victim and stopped abruptly. The suspect and female exited their vehicle, and the suspect began hitting the victim as he sat in his vehicle. An investigation is pending.

March 22 • A complainant in the 700 block of Cambridge told police that an unknown suspect(s) shattered the driver’s side window of the complainant’s vehicle with BB gun pellets.

• An officer responded to a domestic disturbance in the 400 block of Argyle Avenue at around 7:40 p.m. Police said the suspect, who was not identified, hit the victim’s window in the door, causing around $1500 worth of damage. The suspect was last seen driving a gray Buick with Tennessee plates. An investigation is pending.

March 20-March 21 A trucking company in the 1000 block of S. Riverside Drive, as well as a trucking company in Schaumburg, reported to police that six semi-trailers had their brake lines cut sometime in the past few days.

Five belonged to the company in Elmhurst and one to the company in Schaumburg.

Disorderly conduct

March 20 Alexandru Simule, 76, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation in the 100 block of N. Michigan at around 2:23 a.m. Subsequent to an investigation, police said Simule had entered the apartment of victim #1 and struck her. According to police, Simule then left the apartment, encountered victim #2 in the hallway and struck victim #2.

Simule was cited for disorderly conduct.

March 18 A complainant in the 500 block of Fair-

CALL 800-222-TIPS view told police he observed a group of five teenagers walking eastbound on Vallette when one threw a bottle at his home.

No damage was observed. When the complainant was in the yard looking for the bottle, beneath a bush he found an empty package of cigarettes, a disposable lighter and a glass pipe used to smoke marijuana.

DUI/DUI-drugs/ illegal consumption/ possession of alcohol by a minor/public intoxication/hosting underage drinking party

March 23 William K. Schroeder, 62, of Elmhurst, was arrested near North and York at around 6:41 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic crash, police said Schroeder was found to be DUI and in possession of open alcohol in the vehicle. He was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident and illegal transportation of alcohol.

March 20 • Anna Gorzko, 29, of Glendale Heights, was arrested near Lake and Walnut at around 2:13 a.m. Subsequent to failing to stop at a red flashing light at a roadside safety checkpoint, police said Gorzko was stopped and found to be DUI. She was charged with DUI and violating a flashing red light.

• Emigdia Manzano, 26, of Wheeling, was arrested in the 200 block of W. North at around 3:23 a.m. and charged with DUI and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

• Ladonna Truss, 30, of Chicago, was arrested near Lake and West at around 2:46 a.m. and charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and no insurance.

March 19 • Donita Bailey, 30, of Bellwood, was arrested near North and Myrtle at around 3:22 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Bailey was found to be DUI, and was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance.

• Mary Lemanski, 41, of Downers Grove, was arrested near Lake and York at around 1:57 a.m. Police said Lemanski was stopped after striking and running over a raised median at the above location. She was found to be DUI, according to police, and was charged with DUI and improper lane usage.

• Kevin Zarate, 21, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 700 block of N. Indiana at

around 8:57 p.m. and charged with DUI, use of an electronic communication device and no valid driver’s license.

March 17 • Nicole Anderson, 33, of Lombard, was arrested near North and Route 83 at around 11:49 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Anderson was found to be DUI. She was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol and speeding.

• Robert Prince, 39, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 200 block of S. Pick at around 2 a.m. and charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage and unlawful use of an electronic device while driving.

Harassment

March 21 • A complainant in the 100 block of W. Vallette St. told police the complainant and spouse had separated about four months ago. On the above date, the suspect called the complainant three times, but the complainant didn’t talk to the suspect.

• A complainant at a car dealership in the 400 block of W. Lake St. told police that a suspect was yelling and causing a disturbance in the lobby about work being done to his vehicle. The dealership asked the suspect to return the following day to pick up his vehicle. The suspect agreed and left the dealership, only to call the dealership, yell and use profanity about 20 times after his departure.

No contact order

March 23 A complainant at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police that while she was shopping, the respondent of a civil stalking no-contact order shouted and followed the complainant through the store.

Obstructing identification

March 20 Luis Perez-Roman, 28, of Addison, was arrested near Lake and Walnut at around 12:23 a.m. Police said while conducting a roadside safety checkpoint, an officer had contact with the Perez-Roman, who was found to have no valid driver’s license (never issued) and provided the officer with a false name. Perez-Roman’s true identity was learned, according to police, and he was found to have an active failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Perez-Roman was charged with state charges of obstructing identification, no valid driver’s license and no insurance.

Possession of cannabis/drug paraphernalia/controlled substance/tobacco

March 22 • Paul M. Cirone, 54, of Elmhurst, was arrested at a food store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 4:23 p.m. Police said Cirone was observed behind the store smoking with a beer can at his feet. He stated he was not drinking, and as officers

pulled away they saw him place a one-hitter pipe in his sweatshirt pocket, according to police. Police said he was stopped and found to smell of alcohol and cannabis.

Cirone charged with possession of alcohol in public, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting a police officer.

• Darryl M. Woodward, 20, of Broadview, was arrested near North and River Glen at around 12:06 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Woodward was found to be in possession of cannabis. He was charged with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and no rear registration plate light.

March 21 Shaquana K. Patterson, 21, of Milwaukee, was arrested near Third and Clinton at around 11:12 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Patterson was found to be in possession of cannabis. She was charged with possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended and disobeying a stop sign.

March 20 • Nick Aranda, 30, of Bensenville, was arrested near Grand and York at around 12:28 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Aranda was found to be in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. He was charged with those crimes and for having no seat belt.

• Deshaw Moore, 22, of Bellwood, was arrested near North and Kenilworth at around 5:43 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Moore, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be in possession of cannabis and charged with same.

• A female juvenile was arrested near Lake and Walnut at around 1:57 a.m.

Subsequent to being stopped at the safety checkpoint, police said the suspect was charged after being found in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia, and in violation of curfew.

March 17 Patrick Vickers, 20, of Elmhurst, was arrested near St. Charles and Spring at around 12:43 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Vickers, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be in possession of cannabis, for which he was charged.

Suspicious circumstances

March 18 A complainant near North Avenue and Route 83 told police she became upset after seeing her boyfriend talk to a coworker whom she knew was a drug user. She contacted police to state she believed he had marijuana on himself or in her vehicle.

The complainant brought vehicle to the police department where it was searched, and an empty plastic baggie with a strong odor of cannabis was found.

March 16 A complainant at a hotel in the 900 block of Riverside told police she believes unknown suspects may have used a stolen credit card to book a reservation, which was done over the phone. They were unable to provide ID or sign an authorization. An investigation is pending.

York Road, police said the unidentified suspect was found to have entered a victim’s unlocked vehicle and removed a pair of boots. He also was found to have tried several door handles on several other vehicles in the area. Charges are pending upon further investigation.

March 21 • A victim at a food store in the 100 block of E. Schiller St. told police that an unknown suspect(s) stole her debit card.

The victim was in the store and had her debit card in her hand. She then decided to pay with her Link card. When the victim walked out of the store she realized her debit card was missing from her purse. The victim’s bank was advised that a purchase for $50.26 at the food store had been made so her debit card was cancelled.

• A victim in the 500 block of N. Howard Ave. told police that an unknown suspect removed an item of handmade metal lawn décor from his yard. A

note with a telephone number was left, stating the suspect was the neighborhood junk collector and to call if the victim had any more scrap metal. An officer called the phone number and only a busy signal was heard.

March 18 • A victim in the 100 block of S. Route 83 told police that an unknown suspect used the victim’s debit card information to make a purchase at a pet store.

An investigation is pending.

• A victim in the 500 block of N. Walnut St. told police she received a threatening email stating “Your life has been paid for.” The sender of the email stated the victim had to pay $8,000 to spare her life.

The victim believed the email could possibly be a scam to steal money. There was no dollar loss reported.

March 17 An officer responded to a retail theft that occurred at a food store in the 100 block of E. Schiller St. at around 7:49 p.m. with a male driver in a white car traveling northbound on York. A complainant told police he believed the suspect stole several bottles of liquor.

Feb. 20-March 17 Michelle L. Williams, 42, of Chicago, was arrested at a gas station in the 600 block of W. North Ave. at around 2:27 p.m.

According to police, a complainant and loss prevention supervisor at the station told police that between the above dates, Williams was voiding

cash purchases from customers and using that money to purchase lottery tickets for herself. Williams was charged with theft.

March 13-March 14 An officer responded to the 200 block of Oakland Grove for an attempted residential burglary report, later reclassified as a burglary to a motor vehicle. A victim told police that the chain lock which is always latched on the basement door was not latched and found what she believed to be scrape marks. An officer did not see any damage, other than normal wear and tear.

The victim also stated that an unknown suspect(s) entered her locked vehicle and removed an unspecified amount of cash and gift cards.

Feb. 1-March 14 A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used his company’s W-2 identifiers and filed a federal tax return.

Feb. 26-March 8 A victim at a hospital in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill told police she noticed suspicious charges to her debit card account and was advised that someone had opened a Pay Pal account using her information and debit card. She checked her wallet and found her driver’s license was missing and her debit card was in a different slot of her wallet.

Nov. 27, 2015-Jan. 25, 2016 A victim in the 500 block of E. Park Ave. told police that between the above dates, an

unknown suspect(s) used his debit card to make online purchases without his permission.

Victim suspects his ex-girlfriend and her friend may be responsible for the transactions.

Underage possession of tobacco

March 18 Subsequent to a report of suspicious juveniles behind a school in the 300 block of E. Crescent Ave. at around 8:24 p.m., police said officers located tobacco and learned that three suspects purchased the tobacco without providing IDs. The three suspects were issued adjudication citations for possession of tobacco by a minor.

A short time later at the same school, officers made contact with two younger males and smelled alcohol coming from them. Both admitted to drinking alcohol underage and were issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Violation of an Order of Protection

March 17 Edgar Lambino, 28, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 300 block of S. West Ave. at around 8:29 p.m. Police said an officer responded to a domestic report

where the suspect had already left an apartment. Police learned that a protection order had been served against the suspect. Lambino was charged with Violation of an Order of Protection and obstructing.

Warrant service

March 20 Jose Diaz, 25, of Addison, was arrested near Lake and Walnut at around 12:36 a.m.

While police were conducting a roadside safety checkpoint, police said an officer had contact with Diaz, the driver, who was found to have a suspended driver’s license and an active failure to appear warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Diaz was additionally charged with driving while license suspended and no insurance.

March 19 Kevin M. Olson, 46, of Lombard, was arrested in the 100 block of E. First St. at around 4:14 p.m. Police said Olson turned himself in on an original warrant out of DuPage County.

March 18 Mary Benavidis, 60, of Hodgkins, was arrested in the 500 block of S. York at around 5:08 p.m. Subsequent to a suspicious person report, police said Benavidis was located and found to be wanted out of Cook County for obstructing a court order.

Health Department supports new Crisis Intervention Coordinator position Will offer training to police officers throughout DuPage

Last week, the Independent learned that the DuPage County Health Department had offered its endorsement of the plan spawned by the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association to appoint a County Crisis Intervention Coordinator to act as a liaison between law enforcement, mental health service providers and residents who are experiencing a mental health crisis.

The Police Chiefs Association recently approved a resolution supporting a coordinator of training for mental health crisis intervention in response to an increasing number of police interactions with individuals

in mental health crisis. This is not only a cost-effective measure to help people with mental health issues, but also will maximize the public resources already available that those in need may not know about.

“This new Crisis Intervention Coordinator is needed in DuPage County to strengthen our health care safety net to insure the health of all residents,” said Karen Ayala, executive director at the DuPage County Health Department.

“The Health Department strongly believes this kind of collaboration is the best way to serve the health care needs of our residents.”

Ayala said the coordinator will train police officers in the Crisis Intervention Team Model

and will make training available throughout the County.

The new position will be supported jointly by the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association and the Health Department.

According to Ayala, the Health Department has been an active partner with the Mental Illness Court Alternative Program (MICAP), a joint venture with 18th Judicial Circuit Court. MICAP has held 27 graduation ceremonies for nearly 500 individuals, who were experiencing behavioral health symptoms while incarcerated but were successfully directed from the judicial system into MICAP as an alternative. The MICAP graduates have obtained employment and increased self-sufficiency, Ayala said.

Whatever floats your boat or your body, do something to relax

I

like to try new things that are good for me; most recently, floating. Not tubing down the river or a raft in a swimming pool; floating is a method for deep relaxation and meditation.

Float clubs are not new, but are gaining newfound popularity since Dr. Oz discussed the benefits of floats and some professional athletes state that they float. I learned about floating from a client who stated that nothing gets her to relax except floating.

What is a float? An opportunity to do something wonderful for yourself. The spa I went to in Naperville is called Anicca, the Sanskrit word for impermanence. Another floater while I was there, a massage therapist, told me that floating provides the same physical benefits of a massage along with mental, emotional and spiritual benefits.

A nutshell description of my experience: Tour and briefing from owner Lindsay (a delightful young gal who I fell in love with); get naked, insert ear plugs, and shower in my private room; step into float “tub” (it was not a tank or pod, it was a large 6 x 5 x 8 room); turn off light (if I want); lie back and float.

The water is full of salt and magnesium so your body does indeed float. Lindsay promises that even if you fall asleep, your body is supported and you won’t roll over.

The water is not deep and of course just the right temperature. It is normal for many people to put their hands under their head to support their neck until they accept that the water will support them. I was one of those people.

I laid back and let the darkness surround me. My desire was relaxation and meditation but at first my brain was busying mentally writing articles in my head, as I usually do. I tend to try to capture an experience instead of just fully being in the experience.

I wanted the meditation time, so I started listening to my breath and my heartbeat. There were no other sounds. It was unusual to hear my body and nothing else. That is the point of a float.

The room was black but I shut my eyes anyway. Not being a regular mediator, I bounced from focusing on my breath to writing stories in my head. But I relaxed. I let my arms go. I felt the water fully supporting me.

I am not sure if I fell asleep but I went to that deep calm place. Before I knew it, my

never planned to be the mom of a black cat. I might have chosen a different color, had there been a choice. But there was only one kitten available for adoption the day I went to the rescue shelter five years ago. I could have waited a couple of days for another fur ball to become ready, but patience has never been my strong suit. Besides, the little black beauty sitting in a cage crying switched her sounds over to purring the second we picked her up. In that regard, I suppose she chose us as much as we chose her – even though we didn’t really choose her because we didn’t have a choice.

Since that day I’ve become a flagrant fan of black felines.

Our little princess is sweet, friendly and brings a unique personality to our home. She’s also something of a looker, with her sleek ebony coat, jet-black button nose and sea-green eyes.

It’s come to my attention, however, that not everyone is on the black cat wagon. Some people (used to be me) avoid black cats like they are bad luck.

Cat lore has associated them with witches and misfortune, which is unfortunate. When I do an Internet search for “black cat” I find words like sorcery, diabolism, weird, omen, death and evil. My kitten is none of the above. Well, maybe just a little weird on days ending in Y, but who among us isn’t a little weird some or all of the time?

Historically, black cats have gotten a bum rap and I’m here today to set the record straight.

There are many reasons to own a black cat (or allow them to own you). I could come up with at least 13, but today, I’ll stick to an even seven. #1. Black cats can free you from irrational superstitions.

When you live with a black cat, she will cross your path all the time, and you’ll come to understand there isn’t a smidgen of bad luck in the crossing, unless you are carrying a full basket of laundry up the stairs and she decides to race you, which she probably will. #2. Black is the new black.

For cats and clothing. If you own a black cat, you can wear your black yoga pants, black T-shirt, black tuxedo and little black dress without a worry because any errant black cat hairs will be nearly invisible on your garments. #3. Black cat owners are loyal. Once people get a taste of sharing their life with an ebony kitty, they seek out another dark-furred feline when the (sad) time comes for a new cat. You, too, can be part of this elite club. It even comes with a free black T-shirt. (Not really, but it sounded like a good idea.) #4. It isn’t practical for most of us to own a real-live panther.

Sad fact, but a fact nonetheless: black cats are the least likely to be adopted and most likely to be euthanized in animal shelters. Let’s put a stop to this. Adopt a black cat (or two) today! They’ll sleep on your head, swish their tail in your face and remind you at 6:00 a.m. that they haven’t had their breakfast yet. They’ll also purr on your lap, rub up against your legs and give you kisses and hugs when they decide you’ve earned it. #7. Finally, it’s been proven that people who share their life with a black cat are smarter, happier, wealthier, more athletic, successful, energized, vibrant, sexy and better looking than non-black cat owners – at least as reported by their black cats.

Sanitary Sewer System Improvement Project to begin March 28 Expect street closures on select blocks of Jackson Street ELMHURST — On March 28, weather permitting, the City’s hired general contractor was expected to begin making critical improvements to the sanitary lift station located on Saylor Ave. and Jackson Street.

Construction crews will install a new, 24-inch gravity sewer on Jackson St. from the lift station west to Washington Street. Due to the technical and difficult nature of this work and to ensure the safety of residents and the work site during pipe installation, weekly road closures on select blocks of Jackson St. will take place between Saylor Ave. to Washington St. Notices and updates will be delivered weekly to outline the sections of roads to be closed. Detour routes will be posted during construction.

Elmhurst resident uses pageant skills, strong background to career

ELMHURST — The Independent’s efforts to bring news about interesting residents has led to Kaili Harding, who is not only a First Runner-up for Ms. Galaxy but also among the Top Ten Outstanding Jaycees in the state of Illinois. Most of all, she is a resident of Elmhurst “There are skills you learn performing in pageants that transfer easily to the business world,” she told the Independent in an exclusive interview.

“You learn not just public speaking, but also the confidence to step up and be heard.

Then it’s about presentation, putting your best foot forward, making the best impression.”

She is also active in the Jaycees, which is known and recognized for providing life skills

to younger people like organizing events, raising funds, and public speaking. Many elected officials began their careers in the Jaycees.

Uses crown to advance diabetes awareness…

Harding took First Runner-up in the Ms. Galaxy state pageant last May. At the International Galaxy pageant, she was able to meet people from all over the world.

“My reign is over now, but during that time, I promoted 20 different events which brought in a total of $2 million,” she said. “I appeared at races like 5Ks, and events like that.”

In seeking the crown as Ms. Galaxy, her platform was American Diabetes Association, a cause near and dear to her heart because her youngest daughter has been diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes.

Harding is speaking in Washington, D.C. on April 6-7, as she often does, on behalf of the association.

It’s a cause she is passionate about not only because of her daughter, but also because she knows that “one in three Americans are walking around with diabetes or at least prediabetes conditions, and most don’t even understand the risk factors.”

Harding has been to Washington where she proudly talks to Senators and other representatives about the importance of diabetes legislation.

“They’ve had a lot of opportunity to see that in action,” Harding said.

As Ms. Galaxy, Harding made goodie bags for Elmhurst Hospital pediatrics unit to keep children occupied while waiting for doctors and treatments.

The staff at the hospital said they were “a godsend.”

About the business association…

The Schaumburg Business Association began in 2012 thanks to Laurie Stone, the former executive director of the Greater O’Hare Association (GOA). Under Stone’s leadership, the roster grew to 700+ members with $150,000 in the bank. Between Stone and Harding’s tenure, a person worked as the executive director for only about a year, but during that time, membership dropped considerably and not only was the $150,000 in the bank gone, but also the organization was $60,000 in debt.

“We had to work down the debt,” Harding said, “but then our revenues almost doubled and we now have $200,000 in cash reserves.”

She enjoys working as a speaker and consultant, especially to empower women, because she knows how important it is to set goals and work toward them, creating a 5-year or even a 10-year plan.

“Empowering women is about giving the message that you CAN change your life,” she said. “A lot of problems, such as being in an abusive relationship, are associated with shame so the victims are often too ashamed to talk about it. But talking helps. It’s the first step in seeking a solution for your problems.”

Harding knows what she’s talking about, having been in what she describes simply as “a bad marriage.”

“Someone came by my house [when I was married] and noticed my kids were eating dinner on the floor,” she said.

“The visitor asked why and I answered simply -- we had no dining table. The next thing I know, someone showed up at the door with a used dining

table and brought it inside.”

Her girls are now 8 and 9 years old and attend Jefferson School in 2nd and 3rd grade, respectively. They still remember that incident as well as others.

“I want my kids to grow up to have a a big heart,” she said.

Both attend Jefferson School in the 2nd and 3rd grades.

Kaili Harding requested a “shout-out” to Jefferson School and District 205 for certain actions she considers quite remarkable.

“First of all, only one in 400 students is diagnosed with diabetes today,” she said. “My daughter is the only student in that entire school – about 400 students -- who has diabetes, but the entire staff of the school received training about working with a diabetic child – every single staff person. I think that’s great. And

of course, if another child with diabetes ever attends Jefferson, the staff is already trained and ready to work with that child.”

Favorite destinations?

Asked what she loves about Elmhurst, she is quick to respond, “It’s a destination community.”

“There’s so much to do here,” she said. “We love the museums. My daughter’s artwork was chosen by the [History] Museum, which meant she was able to ride in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. It was a big thrill for her!”

It may be no surprise but Harding likes shopping, especially at Kie & Kate and at EnZee boutique in downtown Elmhurst. She finds York Theater a terrific thing about the downtown area, too.

“We love all the places to go and to eat in town,” she said.

“We love Armand’s Pizza, we went to Fitz’s after the parade, I love OMG! Breakfast, too.”

Tim Smithe brings marketing insight to west suburban Chambers

You’ve seen the commercials. Three brothers acting rather goofy, doing typical things siblings do like arguing, arm-slugging, and two pitted against the younger one, all in the name of furniture sales.

As it turns out, Tim Smithe – with an “E” – has been the brains behind the advertising campaigns that have catapulted Walter E. Smithe to success, now boasting 11 stores in the Chicagoland area. On Thursday, March 24, the Emmy® award-winning adman, business consultant and international speaker shared his expertise at a luncheon and expo presented by the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce Executives and sponsored by First Trust Financial.

Between videos of the many hilarious commercials featuring the Smithe brothers –

some with celebrities – Smithe offered his own marketing advice.

“If I had one challenge for you, it is to be a little bolder in your marketing and advertising,” Smithe told the 500+ people at the luncheon. “We’re all so safe in business now, sometimes you have to step out and do something unexpected.”

He went on to explain the history of Walter E. Smithe, whose tagline is “You dream it, we build it.”

“My grandfather owned a tavern where he worked around the clock, literally from 5 a.m. to 12 midnight,” Smithe said.

“Once World War II was over, he knew people coming back from the war would want to set up housekeeping. So he sold the tavern in 1945 and went into the furniture and appliance business.”

Turned out Grandpa was

right -- after the war ended, there was a huge demand for washing machines, more than the store could keep in stock.

“Back then, our tagline was ‘you order it, we build it!’” he quipped. “They actually took orders and people waited for them to come in stock – because everybody wanted one and my grandfather knew it.”

Getting celebrities to join in…

“It’s amazing what you can do if you just ask,” Smithe said.

As an example, he wanted Billy Corgan, lead singer for the Smashing Pumpkins rock group, to be in a commercial.

“I happened to know that Corgan had just turned down a $1 million contract to advertise for Budweiser. I thought if he turned down a $1 million contract, there’s no way he’s going to be in our commercial for free!”

It turns out, all Smithe had

to do was ask.

That particular commercial, never before seen, was quite funny. It involved the three Smithe brothers (in suits and ties), Billy Corgan, and some pro wrestlers all fighting together in a ring. One wrestler picked up a chair and held it overhead to smash someone, when suddenly Corgan spoke up and said, “Hey! That’s a Walter E. Smithe chair! You can’t smash that!” With that, all the people who were in the ring stopped fighting dead in their tracks, as if to agree – “No, we can’t smash a Walter E. Smithe chair!”

Using current happenings, topics…

Another marketing tip offered by Smithe was to take advantage of current events in the news or pop culture.

For instance, the last time the Olympics came around, the Smithe brothers did a series of commercials in which the older two insisted the younger one try the various sports. An attempt at swimming resulted in a belly flop, while the other two looked on and laughed; skiing found the younger Smithe in a snow bank, leav-

ing only his feet visible; and, finally, curling – the elder two operated the brooms, using the youngest as the curling rock – the “puck.”

While it didn’t end well for the younger brother, it turned out that series of commercials were the third most-recalled commercial during the entire three-week broadcast of the Olympics.

Smithe’s recommendation to “ride on other people’s success,” led them to work with the 1985 Bears, Martha Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel, Paula Deen (before she fell from grace), Ralph Lauren, Oprah, even George Clooney and Brad Pitt in an Ocean’s 11 parody. The three Smithes even dressed as cavemen (in suits and ties) as an homage to the commercials which claimed: “Even a caveman could do it,” to the disgust of cavemen who apparently are still alive today.

“You can make a dramatic commercial but you have to put the sales message in there, too. Don’t get so creative that you forget you have a message to get across.”

The bottom line is, people would rather be entertained

than informed.

“Most of us go to our customers and inform, inform, inform,” Smithe said. “If you can inform people by enter-

taining them, you can still make your point in such a way that people won’t realize they’re being sold to.”

Regarding the commercials, Smithe’s next bit of marketing advice was “be the face of the company,” if you can.

“I highly recommend being in your own ads and commercials. Because you are part of the brand personality, your face becomes part of your brand.

“Because this,” Smithe draws an imaginary circle around his face with his finger, “is something your competitors can’t steal from you.

Your face is unique to your brand, so why not make it part of the brand?”

Lodewyk winding up productive athletic career at Timothy Christian Senior recently earned all-conference honors in basketball

Timothy Christian senior Ben Lodewyk has made the most of his time in athletics at the school.

Lodewyk, a three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball and tennis, recently earned allMetro Suburban Conference East Division honors in basketball.

“Coming off the soccer season (part of Timothy’s statechampionship squad) I started off playing pretty well, but then I sprained my ankle and had to fight through that,” he said. “By the end of the season I was attacking the rim and was more confident shooting the ball coming off that injury. I definitely saw improvements throughout the season.”

Besides taking the ball to the basket more, Lodewyk said he also saw an improvement with his free-throw shooting. But Lodewyk said the most fun this past season came from playing with his teammates.

“I enjoyed the team,” he said. “There are a lot of great guys on the team and I have a lot of close friends on the team, plus it’s been fun getting to know everyone. We became a family and bonded during a long season. Getting to know the guys was my favorite part.”

Lodewyk enjoys being a three-sport athlete. He was part of the soccer team that won the state title this past fall and took second in 2014.

“Winning state was superexciting,” he said. “We

worked very hard and had a lot of fun. We were very motivated this year to work hard and get even better than last year. We had a first-year coach (Steve Fernandes) and he worked out great. We bonded as a team and had a blast winning state.”

Lodewyk said juggling three sports and athletics hasn’t been overly complicated. “You have to have good time management,” he said. “Sports take up a lot of time. When you know you have practice or a game you have to get to work and do your homework and take advantage of study hall and other free time. It wasn’t too challenging. There have been some late nights. You know you have to get to work.”

Lodewyk hasn’t made a decision on college yet. “I’m considering Hope College up on Holland, Mich.,” he said.

“I’m thinking about playing soccer and basketball there.

I’m also looking into High Point University in North Carolina. That’s a Division I school so I don’t think I would play sports there. I would definitely do intramurals and play club sports.”

Lodewyk said he’s considering a major in business with sports analytics/ sports management included.

“I want to study something around sports,” he said.

Lodewyk admitted he will miss not only the sports programs at Timothy, but the school in general.

“I will miss Timothy Christian for sure,” he said. “I’m excited about college, but everybody at Timothy is very nice and I know everybody well. It’s one advantage going to a smaller school. Timothy has been a very cool place for me with very cool people.”

York girls soccer team starts season with pair of victories; Dukes return 10 players from 2015 team

The York girls soccer team started the season 2-0 with a pair of non-conference victories.

The Dukes defeated Rolling Meadows 2-0 and also scored a 3-2 win over Gurnee Warren.

York returns 10 players from a 2015 team that registered a 13-6-2 overall record, went 3-3 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play and won a Class 3A regional title.

Back for York this season are seniors Casey Madison (forward), Ellen Foley (goalie), Shannon Hansen (midfield), Amanda Healy (goalie), Abby Horn (defense), Ffyon Hund (midfield-defense), Kaylin Kenny (defense) and Maggie Milkowski (midfield) along with juniors Jenna Dvorak (defense) and Jenna Lundgren (midfield).

Key newcomers include seniors Cassidy Privett (midfield), Bailey Stearns (for-

ward), Kate Sullivan (forward), Rachel Teague (midfield) and Kristen Viola (midfield), along with juniors Maddie Schiller (forward), Brianna Suchy (defense) and Gabbie Uribe (midfield). Sophomore Maggie Bleyer (forward) also is new to the varsity.

“We do a great job of working as a team,” said York interim coach Stevan Dobric. “The team understands its role and everyone works hard for each other.”

York benefits from having both Foley and Healy back in goal. “We have two returning keepers and both offer great skill at the position,” said Dobric.

Dobric has been impressed with the team camaraderie thus far. “I like the unity of the team and understanding of needing to build each other up to achieve common goals,” he said. “We function as a team and all our players offer something different to make the team

successful.”

York played Benet Academy earlier this week. The Dukes come back from spring break next week to face Hinsdale Central and South Elgin on the road before starting the annual Pepsi Showdown tournament on Saturday.

“We will have a great season this year because the girls do a fantastic job supporting each other and pushing each other every day to grow as people and soccer players,” said Dobric.

The York boys track team recently placed sixth at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division indoor meet.

York finished with 60 points.

Oak Park-River Forest won the conference title with 118 points.

Michael Geiger ran 7.08 in the 55 dash. Sunny Kurian took ninth in the 200 with a time of 24.66. Mark Bashqawi was ninth in the 400 with a time of 54.67.

with a time of 1:25.40. Charlie Kern Jr. was fourth at 1:26.18.

Denning also won the 800 with a time of 1:56.38, while Liam Hill was sixth at 2:01.93.

Jon May took fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 9:38.18, while Sean MacGregor was sixth at 9:47.02.

Melissa Gonzalez hit a tworun homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a onerun deficit and give the Knights a 10-9 win over Westmont in recent non-conference play at Plunkett Park.

IC Catholic Prep trailed 7-0 at one point, but rallied to score five runs in the fifth inning, three in the sixth and two more in the seventh to pull out the win via the Gonzalez homer.

The Knights had eight hits in the game.

Gonzalez finished the day with two hits and three RBI. Kyla Faber-Cournane was the winning pitcher.

During that five-run fifth inning, the Knights scored runs on two passed balls, an RBI single by Josie Lytton and an RBI single by Gonzalez.

team recorded a recent 7-2 win over Lisle. The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Lisle cut it to 3-2 after two innings, but IC Catholic Prep scored three runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to pull away.

The Knights had nine hits in the game. CJ West was the winning pitcher. Austin Reed homered in the game, while Mike Hoffman had a triple.

In earlier action, the Knights were 7-1 winners over Westmont. IC Catholic Prep had 10 hits in the game.

Brendan Russ was the winning pitcher. He threw a complete game two-hitter and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He struck out six.

Austin Reed went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Amari Reed went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Matt Sutton went 3-for-3. The Knights scored three runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead.

ELMHURST — Elmhurst Hospital will host Start by Believing, a full-day educational awareness program about sexual assault, on Wednesday, April 6 in the Oak Room of the hospital, 155 E. Brush Hill Rd. It is presented by Elmhurst Hospital, the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago, the Elmhurst Police Dept. and Elmhurst College.

From 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., the morning session, “First Response to Sexual Assault: Working Within a Multidisciplinary Team,” will be held which is designed for medical personnel and law enforcement officers.

Speakers will include Mike

Drugan, DuPage County Sheriff’s Office; Kerry O’Connor RN, BSN, Elmhurst Hospital ER; Sangita Rangala, MD, Edward Hospital; and Colleen Zavodny, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago.

From 1-3:30 p.m., the public is invited to the afternoon session, “Community Response to Sexual Assault,” which will highlight how towns respond to incidents and the services available. Speakers will include Jennifer Kosciw, MA, Elmhurst College; along with O’Connor, Dr. Rangala and Zavodny.

A campaign developed by End Violence Against Women International, Start by Believing

focuses on improving the public response to sexual assault.

The campaign is called Start by Believing because a friend or family member is typically the first person a victim confides in after an assault and that person’s reaction is the first step in a long path toward justice and healing.

The goal is to change the community and outcomes for victims, one response at a time.
