Elmhurst residents question downtown proposed zoning changes One of largest crowds ever attends City meeting

One of the largest crowds ever to attend a City meeting came to the Zoning and Planning Commission public hearing on March 23.

About 40 people stood around the walls of the City Council room while approximately 60 residents sat on chairs.

The protest was about some proposed downtown zoning changes that some residents believe could affect property values and cause safety problems. People also said they were against taller buildings.

Some claimed the City did not give notice soon enough to residents.

Than Werner, planning and zoning administrator for the City, noted that 25 signs had been posted in various locations. He also indicated that previous meetings had been held about the downtown plan.

Darrell Whistler, chairman of the ZPC, told people attending the March 23rd meeting that discussions had gone on for months.

“Tonight is not a discussion and you will not get answers tonight or we would be here forever,” he said.

“We will not stay later than 10 p.m.

[ZPC rules].” The meeting ended a few minutes before 9 p.m. after 20 people had testified.

Whistler also suggested that residents contact their aldermen.

ZPC members will deliberate on the proposed zoning changes at a meeting scheduled for April 13. Whistler invited people to the meeting but noted that they will not be allowed to comment.

“We will try to do our best,” he said.

“

Our neighborhood is very concerned.

I am presenting to you tonight a petition signed by many of our neighbors asking that you maintain the current zoning on the north side of Marion (currently R-1), the west side of Arlington (currently R-4), the east side of York (currently R-5). All of these area should remain as residential, not changed to transitional.”

“It is not a good idea to zone it commercial,” Morello said. “It is very peaceful and kids play there.”

Tim Morris, who lives on Larch, said his biggest concern was the height of future condominium

buildings.

Steve Kunst, who also lives on Larch, said one of his concerns was the possibility of increased traffic on Larch.

Eric Liedthe from Immanuel Lutheran Church said people at the church were pleased that the zoning in the area would stay as it is.

The ZPC, an advisory body to the City Council, will send a report to the Development, Planning and Zoning Committee (DPC) made up of three Aldermen. The last step is for the full City Council to make a decision.

William Kling is an attorney who lives on Kenilworth.

“I want to take a moment to state that the process has not been very transparent,” he said. “While I know that as a citizen I have a responsibility to stay abreast of what occurs in our government, the first I heard of the plan was three weeks ago when a letter arrived describing in general the proposed changes.

“We and our neighbors would have appreciated more involvement in the discussions at the beginning of the process.

“As an example, the consultants hired by the City to create the plan

obviously made a mistake in designating the three homes on the north side of Marion just east of Robert Palmer Drive as a ‘development opportunity,’ which was defined as ‘under-utilized’ meaning a vacant building or parking lot. A quick drive by the properties would have shown that they are residences and have been residences for over 100 years.

Ever donate $100 to a cause and just sort of wonder where it goes or if it’s really doing any good? What if you could give $10,000? That would certainly make a difference. It would likely get you as the donor a great deal of praise and recognition.

Well, what happens if you don’t have $10,000 to donate to a local charity — which most of us don’t!

But if you could turn your $100 into $10,000, then you’re talking about making a real difference. Sometimes a jaw-dropping experience for the charity recipient of your donation.

There have been a few organizations who have recognized this and begun an effort to consolidate donations to make for a significant contribution to an organization. The 100+ Women Who Care is one such group that allows its members to select a charity from among three and then write a $100 check directly to that organization to be presented by the group’s organizers so that in total, a $10,000 contribution can be made.

Hops for Humanity is a newer organization that is taking the experience one step — or several steps — further.

Hops For Humanity is the brainchild of Elmhurst attorney Patrick Sheehan who happens to be a person who appreciates a good glass of beer.

Sheehan even brews his own at home and recognizes the effort that goes into such a business.

With that in mind, he and his wife Julie Miller who also works at the law firm, figured out a way to combine charitable donations with their love of beer. And Hops for Humanity was born.

Similar to other groups, Hops for Humanity members meet once quarterly and each member contributes $100 each of the four quarters. This offers members a $400 tax write-off annually in a fairly painless way.

Then three charities are nominated at each meeting and a presentation is given about why a particular organization should be elected to receive that quarter’s donation. That evening the recipient is selected by the group.

Each meeting of Hops for Humanity takes place at a different location, often at a local area brewery, where craft beers are available and, per Sheehan’s promise, there will be at least one new beer presented that guests will have never before experienced.

After presentations by the charities, a vote is taken for the winner.

Then another event takes place a few weeks later when the check is presented to the charity (again at a brewery or establishment that serves top-of-the-line libations). At the following event, that charity is invited back to explain how they have used the money.

One advantage at Hops for Humanity is that you can pay online with a credit card if you don’t want to write a check or if you simply want to get the contribution portion over before the quarterly meeting. People are expected to bring their check for $100 to the meeting, but many prefer to take care of it in advance, so there is nothing to do but make the selec-

tion and enjoy the beer!

Sheehan is not surprisingly proud of what the organization has done so far.

“It has been more than two years and we’ve been given $94,500 for local charities,” Sheehan told the Independent in an exclusive interview.

“The thing that really astounds me, the thing that I never contemplated, was the immense local need for awesome great charities that do incredible work that I never heard of or knew of before. They’re all on a shoestring, staffed by volunteers mostly. And when we give $10,000 to a deserving local charities, we’re usually doubling their annual budget or MORE. So the good that they do is magnified by the good we do.

It is humbling to learn about all this need.”

The other thing Sheehan said he hadn’t contemplated is how the group can continue to assist local charities just through introductions.

Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers said that when the ordinance is changed, district staff will work to let the public know about the policy change.

Ordinance will ban tobacco use at park properties The March 13 meeting also included a discussion of the district policy committee’s consideration of banning tobacco use on all district property, with the exception of Sugar Creek Golf Course. The board voted unanimously to direct district staff to bring an amended ordinance to the board that would institute the ban.

The district’s current policy prohibits smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes and any tobacco products, at all indoor facilities and within 20 feet of any district building or facility entrance. Smoking and tobacco use is also prohibited in all park district vehicles, and within 20 feet of a playground. The current policy also prohibits smoking and tobacco use within 20 feet of a participant or spectator at an organized outdoor event, and within 20 feet of a concession serving area that’s part of a district facility. Anyone found in violation of the current ordinance is reportedly subject to a fine of $100 to $250. The current ordinance does allow smoking and tobacco use at Sugar Creek Golf Course.

Ennis and Commissioner Mary Kies are the park district board’s two representatives on the district’s policy committee. Kies noted that she and Ennis were smokers in college, but gave it up. Kies said she was glad the district was moving in the direction of imposing a tobacco ban on all district

CardConnect chosen as district CC processor Board members voted unanimously during the meeting to select CardConnect as the district’s credit card processor. To comply with industry security standards, the district must process card-present transactions by reading data stored in electronic chips instead of magnetic stripes. The district’s current credit card processor does not offer processing equipment for electronic chip transactions. The district needed to select a credit card processor that will interface with the district’s registration software. CardConnect and one other company work with the district’s registration system.

CardConnect and that other company, ETS, both submitted quotes based on 70,000 per year resulting in annual sales of $6.7 million. CardConnect’s annual fees based on that quote were about $134,000, approximately $9,000 less than ETS. Annual credit card fees are a cost already included in the district’s annual budget.

The park district board’s March 27 meeting has been cancelled. The board’s next regular meeting will take place on April 10.

Election Day coming April 4; Time to get out and vote

By the time this edition of the Elmhurst Independent hits the newsstands, there will only be a few days left to consider early voting, available at City Hall. City Clerk Patti Spencer announced at the latest City Council meeting that early voting would conclude on Saturday, April 1, but it will be open that day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Up until then, citizens can vote Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

It is an Election year with very few contested races on the ballot, which is usually a sign that things are going along pretty well, that voters are happy with how things are for the most part.

There will be three ballot questions for those who live north of North Avenue in Addison Township (see related story elsewhere in this issue).

City Council races Mayor Steve Morley Mayor Steve Morley is running unopposed, perhaps because he has done more than any other mayors to move forward on some solutions to flood mitigation. It’s easy now to see why others may have dragged their feet — it’s profoundly expensive and it takes the cooperation of all the taxing bodies in the City, which Morley has not always had.

The Independent does not always endorse candidates but this is the only opportunity to point out what a great job Steve Morley has done as mayor of Elmhurst. He has represented the City well at all levels, has been a no-nonsense person who is unafraid to

call people out and hold their feet to the fire — even the other taxing bodies. He runs the meeting well, everyone gets their say with the meetings running into the wee hours. City staff is performing well and one can’t say enough about all the construction going on in downtown. While the traffic may get snarled and travel times are longer, once it is all done, there will be more and more people with whom to share the tax burden. Other towns are green with envy.

Addison Township residents face three propositions FOR THE INDEPENDENT

Residents of Addison Township should be aware there are three propositions that will appear on the April 4 ballot regarding some key issues that could affect the future of the quality of life in the area.

The first reads: “Should the Federal Aviation Administration and the City of Chicago make the “Fly Qui-

There has been a controversial “Fly Quiet” test program in place at O’Hare during the months of July through December of 2016, which involved changes in the flight configurations. Although it expired in December, there are plans for another test expected to begin in late April or

The goals of the runway rotation test are to provide near-term relief; reduce impacts to the communities facing the highest amount of noise impact; and provide predictability by publishing a rotation schedule that would allow citizens to predict periods of relief to the extent possible.

The Ad Hoc Fly Quiet Committee, a subgroup of the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission, is hoping to discuss a potential third test rotation that would not include Runway 15/33, which is scheduled to be decommissioned in the spring of 2018.

The proposition on the ballot is asking if the City of Chicago and the FAA ought to make the Fly Quiet program permanent for residents of Addison Township. Since the program is still in testing, it’s unclear if or when a permanent program could be put in place. It’s still somewhat unclear whether or not the plan is working, that is, is it actually reducing noise for nearby communities or not. Most people feel however that it is the first time O’Hare seems to be working toward a solution to mitigate excess noise, so it’s easy to want to encourage the testing. That is the decision voters will have to make on April 4.

The next proposition reads: “Should the State of Illinois increase the residential and senior homeowner exemptions to help reduce property taxes for the residents of Addison Township?”

Any effort to reduce property taxes seems like a positive move and this proposition if passed should increase the amount of the exemption.

The third proposition reads as follows: “Should Addison Township pursue consolidation of government entities that presently have no elected oversight?”

There has been a great deal of talk — and some action — on downsizing government and doing away with Illinois’ numerous units of government — the highest of any state in the U.S. The concern may be that township government seems to be at the top of the list for the chopping block, partly because township government was

formed back in the days when Illinois was mostly prairie and farmland.

Also, township government currently only deals with unincorporated areas of the County, which are rather few and far between.

There is also an argument that if you simply do away with township government, then who oversees the unincorporated areas?

If those areas are simply lumped in with the towns where they sit, then those residents may not have had a vote in electing some of their representatives.

It seems the primary issue is about government consolidation most of all and that is what voters will need to consider at the polls.

March 22 Police said a suspect in the 200 block of N. Hampshire related that one of his tenants invited the victim over to the residence. The suspect did not want the victim at the residence and attempted to prevent him from entering.

Mutual pushing occurred but neither party wanted to sign complaints.

March 17-March 18 • A victim in the 700 block of S. Poplar told police that between the above dates, an unknown suspect(s) took a pedestal flower pot from her porch and smashed it on the sidewalk at the northwest corner of Madison and Poplar.

• A victim in the 200 block of E. Wilson told police that in the middle of the night, an unknown suspect(s) used a black permanent marker to vandalize their house and garage doors. An officer observed that the mailbox, the overhanging garage door and the side garage door were damaged.

Disorderly conduct, trespass notice

March 18 Police said a suspect approached officers stating he was pushed to the ground by the manager of a sports bar/cocktail lounge in the 100 block of S. York at around 2:18 a.m. Upon further investigation, the suspect had started a verbal argument and was asked to leave, which he refused to do, according to police.

The suspect was then escorted to the door but then attempted to push his way back in. No complaints were signed and the suspect was served with a no-trespass notice.

March 16-March 17 The manager at a car dealership in the 500 block of W. Lake St. said he has been dealing with a particular individual for about two months. There were some issues with a check from the dealership, but in the end, the individual was paid his owed money and the manager thought their business transaction was complete. However, according to police, this person has been calling the dealership several times, still upset about the money issue.

March 22 A 27-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery and criminal damage to property at a jewelry store in the 100 block of

license suspended, obstructing a roadway, improper lane usage and no insurance.

March 17 Thomas Cintron, 18, of Elmhurst was given city ordinance citations by police for consumption of alcohol by a minor and hosting an underage drinking party in the 900 block of S. Swain Ave. at around 4 p.m. Police said officers responded to the above location on the report of an underage party. All suspects were cited for underage drinking and released to their parents.

CALL 800-222-TIPS N. York at around 11:34 p.m. Police said officers responded for a physical domestic report at the above location. Upon arrival, the suspect reportedly smashed out the front glass window. Officers made entry and took the suspect into custody. The victim stated that the suspect pushed and choked the victim.

March 20 • A 36-year-old Hazel Crest man was charged with domestic battery and unlawful interference with the reporting of a domestic violence near York and Roosevelt at around 4:09 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a call for a possible domestic, the victim and suspect were located on the ramp at York and Roosevelt. The victim had cuts and bruises on her face which she stated was from the suspect punching her and dragging her on the pavement.

• A 20-year-old man from Stone Park was charged with domestic battery and criminal damage to property in the 400 block of N. Berteau Ave. at around 6:43 p.m. Officers were called to the area for a physical domestic incident where a male and female were reportedly seen fighting in a vehicle. The vehicle was located and the occupants were separated.

Apparently there was an argument between the suspect and his girlfriend about their relationship. The victim’s phone was shattered during the fight.

March 18 • Angela Jensen, 22, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI, speeding and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Crestview at around 3:01 a.m.

• Susan Larsen, 48, of Northlake, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage near North and Northwest at around 12:17 a.m.

• Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and West at around 2:03 a.m., Jose A. Lopez-Morales, 39, of Addison, was found to be DUI. Lopez-Morales was transported to the police department, and during a fingerprint inquiry, it was found that the suspect had a valid warrant, according to police. March 22 • Ahmed Ayesh, 22, of Lombard, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and another for tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 3:50 p.m. Police said a strong odor of cannabis was coming from the inside of the vehicle, and Ayesh admitted to smoking cannabis. A search of the vehicle produced a clear plastic bag containing cannabis, according to police.

• Daniel Wolowinski, 23, of Melrose Park, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia in the 100 block of W. North Ave. at around 6:33 p.m. Police said while on patrol, a reporting officer observed a vehicle parked half in a handicapped space in front of the above location. There was no handicap placard displayed, according to police. Police said contact was made with the suspect, and a strong odor of cannabis was detected. A search of his vehicle yielded three cannabis smoking pipes, according to police.

• Police said officers responded to the 400 block of W. Vallette at around 8:40 p.m. after receiving information about possible drug activity. Upon arrival, the juvenile suspects were found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. Juvenile 1 also was in possession of cannabis “wax.” Juvenile 1 was cited for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and released to parents. Juveniles 2 and 3 were cited with possession of drug paraphernalia and released to parents.

March 20 • Tyler Auch, 21, of Des Plaines, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Butterfield at around 8:55 p.m.

• Buck Bowen, 28, of Des Plaines, was charged with possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Route 83 at around 9:46 p.m.

• Christopher Carlson, 23, of Lombard, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Riverside Drive and Route 83 at around 8:36 p.m.

March 17 A reporting officer was called into the dean’s office at York High School for the report of a juvenile suspect who may be under the influence. The suspect’s backpack was searched, and police said a clear, glass cylinder, with brown residue was located. The cylinder gave off the odor of burnt cannabis. The suspect was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and released to his mother.

March 20 Officers responded to a tanning center in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:34 p.m. for an attempted burglary of their safe which was later re-classified as a suspicious circumstances report. The complainant, an employee, advised that the owner of this business wanted her to contact the police to file a report in regards to an unknown suspect tampering with their safe.

March 18 A reporting officer responded to Butterfield Road and Route 83 at around 9:38 p.m. to assist Oak Brook Terrace Police for a suspect that ran from officers. The suspect was apprehended and transported to the Oak Brook Terrace Police Department.

March 22 A victim in the 300 block of E. May St. told police at around 4:56 p.m. that a suspect entered her home stating she was with the City and had to check her water. They went downstairs for approximately 15 minutes. During that time, the suspect made two phone calls speaking in Spanish. The suspect then left in a newer gray unknown sedan which was parked in her driveway. It is unknown at this time what, if anything, is missing. The suspect was described as an Hispanic female, approximately 35 years old and 5’5”, wearing khaki pants, and tan long-sleeved shirts.

March 21 • A victim at a restaurant in the 500 block of W. North Ave. told police at around 9:19 a.m. that during the checkout process she placed her rose gold iPhone on the counter. She exited the restaurant, went to her vehicle and then realized she left her phone inside. When she went back into the restaurant, the phone was no longer on the counter. None of the employees observed anyone take it and that their cameras were not working. When calling the phone it went to voicemail and the “find my iPhone app” was turned off.

• Theft was reported in the 500 block of S. Spring Road at around 5:52 p.m. Police said the victim, a yoga instructor, advised that between 4:30 and 5 p.m., an unknown suspect stole cash that was inside a cash bag in a drawer. She placed the cash inside the bag right before she left the lobby area to teach her yoga class. She taught the class and immediately afterward, discovered the money was gone.

The bag is accessible to all customers in the lobby area.

March 20 A victim in the 400 block of S. Berkley Ave. told police at around 5:28 p.m. that he has been receiving suspicious phone calls and mail from credit card companies about credit cards that he has not opened. The victim advised that he did not authorize anyone to use his information or open new accounts.

March 13-March 19 A complainant who is a property inspector told police that while checking a vacant home in the 100 block of S. Pick owned by a bank, he discovered the rear entry door was open and the door handle was broken off between the above dates. The service door to the garage also was found to be forced open. A grill, two folding chairs, a watering can and a swing set were reportedly missing from the garage.

Two suspects working together rob victim at grocery store On March 21, police said two suspects at a food store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 were working together to steal a victim’s wallet and keys from her purse that was partially open while in her cart. The victim was near the salad bar when the female suspect starting conversing with her about the different items offered. It was during that time (later seen on surveillance) that the male suspect reached into her purse and stole her key fob and wallet. The victim canceled her cards, but learned a purchase had already been made at Nordstrom Oak Brook. There was an attempt at Sears, but the card was declined due to an unusual purchase.

Police warn residents of attempted ruse burglary incident On Wednesday, March 22, at approximately 4 p.m., a ruse burglary incident occurred on the 300 block of East May Street. The senior resident answered her doorbell and spoke to a woman posing as a City water department employee. The woman was described as a female, possibly Hispanic, in her mid-30s, with a heavy build and long brown hair. The woman wore khaki pants, a tan shirt, and was holding a notebook. The woman asked to be let inside the house to check the water in the basement. The resident escorted the woman into the basement and spent several minutes there. The woman made a cell phone call, then left in a gray sedan. The resident soon

realized afterward that her bedroom had been disturbed and another suspect had entered her home while she was in the basement with the woman.

Residents should be aware that Elmhurst employees will wear Elmhurst uniforms, have identification cards, and drive fully marked City of Elmhurst vehicles. If the City requires access to your water service inside the residence, we will always call ahead and make an appointment. Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth asks residents to call 911 to have police respond if they are approached by a person claiming to be a City employee or a utility worker and asking for access to their homes.

All of these items became overdue and the suspect was sent notification via mail to the address that she provided when applying for the library card. The current resident notified the library that no one lives there by that name. The phone number provided on the application was not valid, either. On March 16, police said the aforementioned suspect got a library card and was attempting to check out several video games. The library employee suspected something to be out of the ordinary so she requested the suspect return the items already checked out by his girlfriend. He said he would go get them from the car but he never returned.

March 22 • Police said that subsequent to observing a suspicious person near York and Industrial at around 2:40 a.m., an officer made contact with Larry O. Graham, 38, of Bellwood, who was found to have a valid failure to appear warrant out of DuPage County. He was also found to have cannabis on his person, and was cited for possession of cannabis.

• Police said Ashley Sopici, 23, of Villa Park, turned herself in on a warrant out of DuPage County.

Security alarm sounds; suspects found with merchandise, heroin, cocaine On March 17, police said officers stopped two suspects who were leaving a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at around 9 p.m. when they set off the security sensor alarm. According to police, Kristian N. Nuzzo, 27, of Addison, was found to have taken merchandise without paying and was in possession of heroin. Police said James Fontano, 26, of Elmhurst, was found to be in possession of heroin and cocaine.

Fontano was charged with Class X unlawful possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, and obstructing identification.

Fontano also provided wrong personal information in an attempt to conceal having two no-bond warrants (IDOC and Cook County), according to police.

Nuzzo was charged with felony retail theft and possession of a controlled substance.

Scam reported after suspect claims to need $65,000 from victim On March 16, a victim in the 100 block of S. Lawndale Ave. told police she received a call yesterday from someone claiming to be her nephew stating he was in trouble and needed money.

The victim did as she was told and

bought Target gift cards, called in the card numbers, and then mailed them.

The same person called back on March 16, stating he needed $65,000 because of an accident with injuries.

She realized it was a scam after she contacted her nephew’s father who said the nephew was with him and advised her against sending additional money.

Annual hydrant flushing to begin in April Each year, the City of Elmhurst conducts its annual hydrant flushing. The community fire hydrants are flushed to ensure that they are operating properly and that an adequate amount of water is available for the Fire Department during an emergency. Public Works personnel will conduct annual hydrant flushing April 3 - April 29 between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The operation will take place Monday through Friday. Signs will be posted in affected areas before the work begins.

March 17 A victim in the 400 block of S. York told police at around 7:09 p.m. that his identity was compromised and used to withdraw cash from his bank account. He was advised to do the appropriate credit bureau checks and he was provided an ID theft brochure.

March 16 • Martrese Skipper, 21, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at around 7:26 p.m. Police said officers observed Skipper take merchandise and leave without paying.

• Two incidents of theft were reported at Elmhurst College. In the first incident, which occurred at around 6:27 p.m., a victim told police that his roommate stole a check belonging to him and cashed it. In the second incident, which occurred at around 11:06 p.m., the victims reported they were missing gaming equipment from their dorm room.

The suspect was observed entering the residence hall with a large bag and was seen leaving 10 minutes later without it. Footwear impressions found matched the style of boot the suspect is seen wearing in the video footage. Further investigation is pending.

Jan. 9-Jan. 13 Police said the Elmhurst Public Library is missing many video games

The first suspect was described as a black male, 6-feet tall with a full facial beard wearing a gray jacket, jeans, a dark baseball cap and black gym shoes. The second suspect was described as a black female, around 5’3” with a thin build and braided hair, wearing a black jacket with a shirt underneath and jeans, carrying a large brown purse with imprinted yellow designs.

Victim harassed by passing pick-up truck On March 20, a victim near Berkeley and Utley told police at around 3:30 p.m. that while he was walking home from school, a pick-up truck with two teenagers described as white males drove by and yelled “do you want some candy?”

The truck did not slow down or stop. The truck was described as a two-door pick up, new condition that was blue / green in color.

The victim believe the suspects were students at a local high school and thought he had seen the truck before with the same driver—described as a white male teen-ager with mid-length brown hair and wearing a white T-shirt—yelling and cursing.

ROSS E. CORNWELL, 90 Ross E. Cornwell, Jr., of Elmhurst, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2017, at the age of 90.

Ross was a veteran of the U.S. Army and graduated from the University of Illinois. Beloved husband of the late MaryJo (Tullis); father of Cheryl Turek (Tom), Carole Kubaszewski (Mike), and Caryn Montavoni (Paul, deceased). Grandfather of Melissa Malloy (Joe) and Jessica Montovani. Great-grandfather of Michael & Veronica Malloy. Ross enjoyed photography, bowling, SCCA car club and paying the banjo. Interment private. ARTHUR P. LEBEAU M.D., 92 Arthur P. LeBeau M.D., of Elmhurst, departed March 18, 2017, at the age of 92. Dr. LeBeau was the loving husband of Ruth nee Wittersheim for 62 years; beloved father of Renee, Steven (Anne) and Mi-

chael (Tamara); loving grandfather of Danielle, Dane, Olivia and Matthew. He was the son of Lucille J. (nee Lusthoff) and Dr. Albert A. LeBeau of Chicago. After graduating from Foreman High School in 1942, due to World War II, he was enrolled in the US Navy’s V12 program at The University of Notre Dame. He graduated from Loyola Medical School in 1948 and completed his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

During his surgical residency at Mercy Hospital, Chicago, the US Army called him back into service for the Korean War. From 1952 through 1954, he cared for many of our Korean War’s wounded in the 279th General Hospital in Osaka, Japan. When Capt. LeBeau returned from Japan in 1955, he completed his Surgical Residency at Mercy Hospital, married his beloved Ruth and became an active member of the Surgical Staff

In Support of Jim Collins for Re-Election to the District 205 School Board

Academic excellence and fiscal responsibility are what Jim Collins is all about.

When Jim was first elected to the School Board in 2009, District 205 was in financial difficulty with a severely unbalanced budget despite our having passed a $56 million referendum three years before.

In 2010, the District balanced its budget, not by raising taxes, but by cutting spending - making tough decisions and negotiating difficult labor contracts.

The District’s budget has been balanced every year since; the District has never asked for a tax increase greater than the rate of inflation (1.5% average per year since 2008); the Board took advantage of historically low interest rates to refinance the school district’s debt, saving taxpayers just under $15 million; and the District is paying off debt early while running a small surplus for each of the last four years.

Jim’s commitment to academic excellence can best be summed up by his belief that “every student deserves a great teacher at the front of the classroom.” In 2009, York was ranked 60th in Illinois and unranked nationally. By 2014, US News and World Report ranked York 28th in Illinois and 645th in the US. Most recently, Newsweek ranked York the 186th best in the US - solidly within the top 1% of all high schools in the country. And, in the past seven years, four of our elementary and middle schools have won Blue Ribbon Awards for Excellence from the US Department of Education. In 2013, we won an award from the Grammy Foundation, which ranked

our District’s music program one of the top three in the country.

I believe in judging a person by his record. Jim’s record on the School Board over the past 8 years as president for three and a half, secretary for one, chairman of the Finance Committee and currently as vice president and chair of the Learning and Teaching Committee is outstanding.

Jim is a life-long resident of Elmhurst, a product of the Elmhurst public schools, as am I, holds an MBA from the University of Chicago, and wants nothing more than the opportunity to continue to help ALL our children achieve success while preparing them for fulfilling lives ahead.

Dr. LeBeau served on many committees, was Chairman of the Department of Surgery and was a member of the Hospital’s Board of Governors. In 1990 he was awarded the Medical Staff Distinguished Service Award and in 1997 the Hospital’s Board of Governors Distinguished Service Award. Art was a proud, dedicated, but very humble Doctor and had a wonderfully classic old-time doctor’s bedside manner. He was loved and respected by his patients, the nurses and hospital staff because he treated everyone with respect, dedication and gratitude. He was always on duty and never complained. Whether he had been up many nights in a row, when he was called, he went! Their home was a version of today’s “Urgent Care” welcoming family, friends and neighbors at all hours whether it was for a finger cut off in a snow blower, a simple ear piercing or a patient just wanting to talk.

An avid sportsman, Dr. LeBeau skied Vail’s majestic mountains until he was 80, played golf until 83, and tennis until 85. Alzheimer’s began to slowly invade his heart and soul in 2009. JACK ALLEN KOSTIWA, 88 Jack Allen Kostiwa passed away recently at the age of 88. Beloved husband of Rosemarie for 66 years; loving father of Susan Kostiwa and Jane (Steve) Baker; brother of Dr. Dale (Patricia) Kostiwa; uncle of

many nieces and nephews. Jack grew up in Berwyn. He honorably served in the armed forces as a photographer in Italy during the Occupation after World War II. Jack had a long career as a photoengraver/ lithographer and taught his trade at Triton College. He was an avid reader and loved conversation with friends and strangers alike. Jack enjoyed music (big bands and jazz). He was a proud community member of Elmhurst for more than 59 years. Jack was a nature lover; planting trees and caring for animals. He was an early advocate of recycling for environmental protection. A Good Samaritan, Jack was always available to help a neighbor or friend. He was a great provider and guide for his family.

He will be fondly missed by many.

A memorial tree will be planted at Wild Meadows Trace in Elmhurst in Jack’s honor. Interment private.

ARTHUR F. REIMANN, MD, 100 Arthur F. Reimann, MD, of Elmhurst, passed away on March 23, 2017, at the age of 100. He was born November 7, 1916 in Cicero. He attended Oak Park-River Forest High School and received his BA from Lawrence College. He received his MS in Anatomy and MD from Northwestern University Medical School. He completed his internship at Cook County Hospital and surgical residency at Hines VA Hospital. Dr. Reimann is a veteran of World War II, where he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Naval Medical Corps. Dr. Reimann had a long career as a thoracic/cardiovascular surgeon, and served as chief of surgery at the Suburban Cook County Tuberculosis Sanitarium. He practiced at MacNeal,

LaGrange, and Hinsdale Hospitals. Dr. Reimann was an Assistant Professor with the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago. City, College to co-host 2017 Recycling Extravaganza The City of Elmhurst is partnering with Elmhurst College, DuPage County and SCARCE to host the 2017 Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday, April 29 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The event will be held at Elmhurst College, using the Alexander Parking Lot. Items that will be recycled include: eye glasses, hearing aids, bicycles, Brita & Pur water filters, books, household goods, classroom supplies, building materials, working appliances, batteries(auto/lawnmower/boat - no Alkaline Batteries) and paper shredding (2 Box Limit - no plastic or metal binders).

electronics with ordinary trash and also prohibits landfills from accepting them. At the Recycling Extravaganza, electronics will be accepted for recycling including computers, keyboards, modems, scanners, printers and cell phones.

Police to host Explorer Open House recruitment event The Elmhurst Police Department will be hosting an open house event for youth people interested in the Explorer program on Monday, April 24 at 7 p.m. at the police station, 125 E. First Street. The Police Explorer program is a youth based program similar to boy scouts or girl scouts designed for males and females ages 14 - 21.

Members learn about careers in law enforcement and criminal justice.

City receives two awards from the American Public Works Association On Friday, March 17, 2017, the City of Elmhurst received two awards from the Chicago Metro Chapter (Chapter) of the American Public Works Association (APWA). Engineering Department staff member Tony Cuzzone, Utilities Capital Project Administrator, received the Chapter’s 2017 Community Involvement Award and Walnut/Myrtle/Evergreen Stormwater Improvement Project won the Chapter’s 2017 Public Works Projects of the Year in the category Environmental Category – less than $5 million.

Long time City employee, Tony Cuzzone, was honored with the 2017 Community Involvement Award. This award is aimed at recognizing public works employees who are also leaders in their community. Mr. Cuzzone is currently the Utilities Capital Projects Administrator and throughout his almost 40-year career, he has lead by example with this many years of community service and volunteerism with organizations such as the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, Annie Ryan Run, York Township and the

American Water Works Association.

The Walnut/Myrtle/Evergreen Stormwater Improvement Project involved the construction of a series of storm sewers pipes (60”72”) along various streets and a drainage outfall to the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control Facility (Quarry). This project now provide overland flood relief for 76 homes in the Walnut/Myrtle/Evergreen flood problem area, which is located adjacent to the Quarry in the northwest corner of the City. The APWA Public Works Project of the Year Award was established to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor who, working together, complete public works projects.

Imperial Oak Brewing will host upcoming event April 17 Hosted by Imperial Oak Brewing at 510 Willow Blvd. in Willow Springs, the next event for Hops for Humanity takes place on Monday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. for check-in. About the host Imperial Oak Brewing is a small (7 bbl) brewery that puts the beer first.

tion,” he said, “they give musical instruments — so we are now reaching out to people we know, such as Midwest Movers in Des Plaines.

They often come across musical instruments so we introduced Midwest Movers to the Alyssa Alvin Foundation. We’re now going to reach out to all of our hosts — for instance, what a great place to drop off your instrument and have a beer, too. What better place?”

Sheehan couldn’t say enough about how meeting people through Hops for Humanity allows the charity to go beyond the money and help connect people with other helpful organizations.

“Everything is interconnected,” he said. “The generosity of the brewers is so heart-warming, they are willing to give us a night to host us, because they don’t have to do that. We show a real commitment to the local brewing community.”

While some are at breweries, most of the events take place at restaurants with local brewers bringing in their stock for our guests to enjoy tastings.

If we feature a local brewer, that person has donated beer, which costs them but then again, we’re bringing 100 people to them, most of whom have never been there before or tasted their beer before. We’re opening people’s eyes to new taste and new experiences and the brewer is forming a symbiotic relationship - the brewers are very generous willing to give back to the community.”

Sheehan was quick to acknowledge all his helpers.

“I’m really proud of the Board of Directors, I cannot take credit without mentioning them, there’s no way,” he said. “And Julie works super hard with our dedicated Board of nine people. Equally, we couldn’t do it without the brewers and the restaurants — collective effort. We

couldn’t do it without our members, either. There are a whole lot of people involved who make this a success.”

The next event will take place at Imperial Oak Brewing in Willow Springs on Monday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m.

When asked about hopes for the future, Sheehan mentions two things.

“First, I’m proud to say we have events scheduled through January of 2018, which is astounding. When we first started out, we had to beg a little bit for a location and for beer. Now that we’re well-known, people are actually calling us. My first hope for the future is that it continue.

“My second thing I’m not so secretly hoping is that other Chapters open — I would love for someone to copy this model and start it in other communities. The model is easily transferrable and two people have already approached us.”

Timothy Christian mock trial team finishes second at state SUBMITTED BY PARENT AMY BODE

Senior Charles Hooker was recently accused of being a mercenary on the witness stand.

It didn’t rattle him though.

As part of Timothy Christian Schools’ undefeated mock trial team, he was mentally prepared for an assault on his character. And so was attorney Grace Files, a senior who was named outstanding attorney at the state competition. She immediately objected to the accusation.

“You have to be able to adapt and think on your feet,” Coach Scott Roelofs said. “That’s the hardest thing.

You need to be poised and articulate and be able to answer the tough questions.”

The history of Timothy Christian’s mock trial team is as long as the team’s accolades. Thirty years ago, a student whose favorite show was “L.A. Law” approached Roelofs, a history and economics teacher at Timothy, and asked if they could start a Mock Trial team.

“When we started the team, I really didn’t know what I was doing,” he admitted. “On the way to our first trial, we were writing opening statements and we winged closing arguments.”

Now with seven state championships and multiple appearances at the national competition, Roelofs and his mock trial team no longer “wing” anything. It’s carefully choreographed and researched, down to each character’s personality nuances.

Part theater, part law, each student on mock trial is either a lawyer or a witness. They are each given affidavits, which they must memorize.

This year, Timothy’s team was led by senior lawyers Trevor Hoogendoorn, Grace Files, Josh Kalapala and Elijah Tornow, who was also awarded outstanding attorney at the state competition. Hooker, along with Nick Terpstra and junior Elizabeth Canfield, all were expert witnesses.

While the direct examination between Timothy’s lawyer and witness is scripted like a play, the cross-examination is not.

“You never know what the other team will do,” Roelofs said. “They will try to set a trap, maybe twist the meaning of your words. You have to be prepared for that.”

Team preparation starts in the summer, even before the actual case is announced. The team works on court decorum and legal terms. Tryouts are held in the early fall. In November, the state bar association gives teams the case that will be tried throughout the season.

This year it was a college hazing case. In the case, a fraternity forced pledges to play a game of “water jeopardy.” Students were asked

questions and forced to drink water for any wrong answers. One student drank so much water, she collapsed and eventually died.

The pledge master was charged with involuntary manslaughter and hazing.

Each mock trial team must prepare to be both the defendant and the prosecution. They try the case in front of an actual judge and are scored by real attorneys. They earn points for direct examination, cross-examination, closing arguments and each part of the trial.

Mock trial has no divisions or classes, unlike sports. So Timothy Christian’s team is often pitted against much larger schools.

This year, Hooker was assigned to act as Dr. Jordan Peters, an expert witness for the defense. Hooker not only had to memorize medical terminology, such as triiodothyronine, but had to learn what it meant and how it affects people. He also had to develop idiosyncrasies that would convince the jury and judge that he was indeed a 55-year-old pathologist.

Without any experience in theater, Hooker spent weeks working with Roelofs and Cathy McNeil Stein, the lawyer who also coaches the team, perfecting his role.

Hooker’s character, Dr. Peters, often was accused of having a personal vendetta against the opposing witness, Dr. Craig, because he was given the job of the county coroner

instead of Dr. Peters’ son.

It’s the humanness of the characters and their personal stories that not only makes mock trial challenging for the players, but also more realistic.

“I had to defend my testimony,” Hooker said. “I got really into it. My whole voice changes. I have a voice inflection when I’m in character.”

Hooker earned the outstanding witness award at the state competition. He kept perfecting his character as Dr. Peters until the last trial.

While his character was well-educated, with degrees and training from Northwestern, Duke, Tennessee and Maryland, the character seemed bland, he noted.

“Mr. Roelofs and Mrs. Stein helped me work on my closing statement,” Hooker said. “To defend my testimony, I said the line ‘I went from being a Wildcat to a Blue Devil to a Volunteer to a Terrapin and now I’m just a pathologist.’”

It’s these seemingly natural zingers, ones that are written and rehearsed, that mixes a combination of a character’s personal history and facts, which often win points at the trials.

And Timothy’s entire team became experts at it, earning individual awards throughout the season.

Even though Timothy’s team of lawyers and witnesses were feared in the courtroom, they remained true to their Christian morals. “We want

Christian lawyers,” Roelofs said.

“There are ethics and decisions that have to be made. Timothy is teaching that.”

In March, Timothy competed at the state competition at University of Illinois School of Law in Champaign-Urbana. Timothy, which went undefeated in its state activities, was narrowly outscored by fellow undefeated St. Charles North. Timothy did not have the opportunity to directly face St. Charles North in the courtroom.

“As a coach you always want your team to reach its full potential and that’s what these guys did,” Roelofs said. “I don’t know what else we could have done. They worked hard every day. I’m very proud of them.”

The seniors, who earned a first-

place finish at state last year and a trip to nationals, will join the ranks of distinguished Timothy mock trial alumni. It is a legacy filled with ministers, 30 lawyers, and Mac Wiener, Timothy’s current Bible teacher, who was a witness on the first team.

Practice will begin again in the summer. Not only will the team start preparing for the next trial, but a summer camp is open to sixth through eighth graders who want to experience Mock Trial.

“Mock trial teaches kids how to speak in front of people and helps develop poise and confidence,” Roelofs said. “I have students who graduated long ago and they come back and say mock trial is one of the most important things that helped them prepare for their future.”

Scout Troop 17 to host Pancake Breakfast

Boy Scout Troop 17 will be holding their 6th annual ‘Red White and Blue Pancake Breakfast’ on Saturday April 8 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at Christ United Methodist Church, 920 S Swain Ave. across from Jackson School. They will be serving blueberry and plain pancakes, sausage, fresh strawberries, real whip cream, orange juice, Oberweis milk and Starbucks coffee. There will be a silent auction with gift certificates and merchandise donated by local businesses. Funds raised will be used for camping trips for the boys. Twenty ICGS seventh graders compete at regional science fair On Friday, March 10, twenty seventh graders from Immaculate Conception Grade School in Elmhurst competed in two categories (“Project Session” and “Paper Session”) at the Joliet Diocese Science Teachers Association Region II Science Fair at the University of St. Francis in Joliet. These students, having previously presented their science fair projects and papers at the ICGS Science Fair on January 18, qualified to compete at this March regional fair.

‘Discover your story’ at the library Technology, personal stories help shape family tree

With genealogy research rising in popularity at the Library, a series of spring programs entitled, “Discover Your Story” are underway at the Elmhurst Public Library.

Patrons are invited to discover their own story by taking part in programs such as Tell Me a Story: An Oral History Project, Elmhurst Writers Group, A Family’ Tale Unplugged: Sculpting Your Story, Finding Living Family, Write Your Family Story, and more.

While digital records make the information of past generations more accessible than ever before, Programming Coordinator Kim Calkins says it’s important to remember the untapped potential in our current generation of family members, too.

“We see history through the lens of all that’s happened in the past,” says Calkins. “But we are also currently creating history.” Using the resources at the Library, Calkins hopes people find their own story

by writing, archiving photographs and home movies, writing, and using technology to capture and store memories. The Library’s Oral History Project encourages adults and children to have meaningful, face-toface conversations to share stories in the Library’s Creative Studio using digital recording equipment. “Discover Your Story” is all about asking questions like, “How did you meet Grandpa?” or, “what do you remember about the war?”

“When we learn about our family, we learn about our own story,” says Calkins. “We build empathy and connections. These days, it feels like everything is so immediate. Yorkfield Food Pantry receives $100,000 from Subaru campaign Dealership donates trunkful of food — and the vehicle too!

A special gathering was held at Grand Subaru on Grand Avenue in Bensenville on the evening of Wednesday, March 22, to honor the Elmhurst Yorkfield Food Pantry (EYFP), the recipients of the dealership’s recent charity campaign.

About 100 guests enjoyed a lavish buffet prior to the presentation, which organizers kept close-lipped about the details. It was expected the amount of Subaru’s donation would be announced at the event, but there were rumors there would be “something more.”

Ryan Drouin, general manager of Grand Subaru, welcomed the audience and began by asking for a round of applause for all of the volunteers present in the room. He spoke briefly about the dealership’s commitment to community involvement through

the Share The Love program. Subaru offers car-buyers an opportunity to donate toward one of five charities at the time they purchase their vehicle.

Four are national charities, but there is always a local choice as well. This past year, it was the EYFP. “To be successful you need to make the people around you successful, too,” he said.

Dealership owner Bill Hartigan joined Drouin at the front of the room. He talked about how they choose the local charity.

“We look for people who help themselves,” Hartigan said. “First of all, we look at how resourceful they are with what they have to work with there.

“But when we heard people say their experience [with EYFP] was ‘life-changing,’ that’s when we knew we had the right charity. We couldn’t feel better about this. We appreciate the opportunity to help the betterment of the other people.”

Drouin then called up Kathie Watts, an EYFP Board member, who coordinated the project with Suba-

ru, and presented her with a special award plaque.

“I can’t say enough about Kathie,” he said. “I’ve never met someone so impassioned about a cause. She was just amazing to work with. I still remember receiving a text message from her on Jan. 1 to thank us once again for the partnership.”

Then the moment came — the “giant check” was brought to the front with the amount hidden. The crowd burst into applause when the front of the check revealed a contribution of $100,000. Cameras flashed and tears flowed. But there was more.

While the presentations were going on, an employee at the dealership drove a van into a side area where the group was gathered and opened the back end to show a huge pile of food donations for the pantry.

York softball team ushers in new era under Munn Dukes’ first-year coach has mix of key veterans and newcomers

The cupboard was left far from bare for first-year York softball coach Elizabeth Munn.

Munn, an assistant in the program under former coach Jenna Nolan who was promoted to the top position, returns several key performers from last year’s team that went 1312 overall and 6-6 in the tough West Suburban Conference Silver Division. That team also won a Class 4A regional title.

Back for the Dukes are plenty of players with varsity experience, including Kyra Kroll (CF), Andrea Meagher (P, 1B), Katherine Karnatz (SS, 2B), Mia Tran (2B-OF), Julia Durkowski (P), Izzy Smith (3B) and Madison Collins (C).

Kroll, a junior and three-year varsity starter, has committed to Western Illinois University. “Kyra is an excellent hitter,” said Munn.

Key newcomers to the squad include Juniors Jane Moran (OF), Maria Gentile (OF), sophomore JoJo Moyer (OF-3B) and freshman Sydney Fuglsang (utility).

“We are still very young and we are in a rebuilding year after losing several seniors,” said Munn. “We are very quick, which has so many benefits to offer in the game. I am looking forward to our competitiveness and coherence with this team. Rebuilding always is tough, but I definitely have confidence in this team and how they are going to grow together.”

Munn is optimistic about her team’s potential in the three key phases of the game. “Our offense is shaping up well with a variety of players who understand the crucial need to make adjustments,” she said. “We will be good defensively if everyone executes and understands their position. Our pitching staff will continue to grow and learn with three returners from last year.

These girls have worked hard in the off-season to increase speed and spin on the ball.”

Munn saw her team get after it during preseason practices. “They are a young team that continues to strive to be the best it can be on and off the field,” she said. “I am enjoying the determination and hard work they are putting in.”

Once again, York will battle it out in the highly competitive WSC Silver. “The conference always is tough,” said Munn. “We are setting our goals high and going to compete against some great teams with great pitching.”

In recent action, the Dukes scored a 6-5 non-conference win against Lincoln-Way West.

York was down 3-1 at one point but scored two runs in the third and three more in the fourth inning to take the lead. The Dukes finished with 10 hits.

Karnatz was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kroll was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Fuglsang had a double and two RBI, while Meyer had a double and two RBI as well.

Lauren Wojick went the distance and picked up the win. She allowed only one earned run on five hits, while striking out six in seven innings.

Timothy Christian girls soccer team ready for 2017 season Zeilstra, Kocol among key returners for Trojans

Timothy Christian girls soccer coach Jon Hamelinck has plenty to be excited about with his squad this season.

The Trojans return a number of key performers from a 2016 team that won 10 games and went 3-2 in the Metro Suburban Conference East Division (now known as the Red Division).

Leading the way are seniors Allison Zeilstra and Heather Kocol. Zeilstra had seven goals and six assists last year, while Kocol played center back all of last year as a junior.

“We have a lot of returning seniors to our team this year, although we graduated almost all our starting midfield from last year,” said Hamelinck.

“We have plenty of girls ready to fill in the gaps. We have stronger numbers this year, which allows us to have two levels, which is great for everyone getting game experience.

This is the hardest-working group I’ve had so far and they are doing a great job of pushing each other.”

Hamelinck calls Zeilstra the “Energizer Bunny” of the team “who doesn’t quit,” he said. “She is a great leader and is not satisfied with good enough. She’ll play whistle to whistle regardless of the game or the weather.”

Kocol is a key component to Timothy’s defense. “Heather is small but mighty,” said Hamelinck. “She’s fearless at tackling and has speed to burn. We’ll rely heavily on her to stabilize our back end.”

The Trojans also are bolstered by goalie Shayna Smits, who played the position last year. “Shayna had a starting role last year as a sophomore and learned a lot,” the coach said.

“She’s getting more comfortable on the field and with being vocal. She’s already shown great strides at the start of this year and we’ll need her to be huge for us if we want to have success.”

And yet another returner is Maddie Schaafsma, who had six goals and five assists a year ago. “Maddie loves to score goals,” said Hamelinck. “I

wouldn’t be surprised if she doubles that output this year.”

Sophomore Abby Cartensen is a key newcomer to the team this season. “There definitely are some new faces in the middle of the field for us,” said Hamelinck. “Some girls will be asked to step into greater roles, but they are well-equipped for the job. Abby is one of those new faces and we’re looking forward to what she can bring to our team. She has a great touch and good vision. With us graduating a lot of starters from the middle of the field, we’ll need Abby to distribute well and be aggressive.

She has a lot of raw talent and we’re excited about what she’s going to bring to the team.”

Hamelinck said there is a lot of potential on the offensive side of the ball. “We have a lot of girls who can put the ball in the back of the net,” he said. The coach added the team is working hard on getting those players into a position to take those shots.

“It’s a work in progress,” he said.

Hamelinck reiterated one of the team’s key strengths is the work ethic it displays during workouts. “I like their hard-working mentality,” he

Kalal added players have made the most of opportunities on the offensive end. “We’ve been plugging guys in here and there,” he explained. “We’ve counted on some guys to come in as courtesy runners, pinch runners and pinch hitters and they have come through.”

Lee is one of several players who have excelled at the plate thus far. He was hitting .300 with a double and three RBI in the first three games. “Nick is swinging the bat with authority,” said Kalal.

Gelsomino went 6-for-8 with four runs scored in the first three games, while Ian Steinorth registered several big hits, Kalal noted.

“We are competing at a high level right now,” said Kalal. “We have a lot of different people contributing. It’s been a team effort these first three games. Everybody is contributing up and down the lineup. It’s

been a lot of fun so far.”

In the Glenbard East game, Pflum and Gelsomino each had two hits. Steinorth and Gelsomino each had an RBI. Mike Bernal doubled. York had eight hits in the contest.

York pitchers combined to throw a threehitter.

Against Hoffman Estates, York scored all six of its runs in the final two innings, including three runs in the seventh.

Gelsomino was 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Lee had a double and two RBI. Steinorth also had a double. York won the game with five hits.

Versus Waubonsie Valley, Ryan Ross had two hits, while Lee, Chiappetta and Kevin Lipikin each had an RBI. Steinorth and Andrew Deardurff each had a double. Seven York players had at least one hit and the Dukes swiped four bases.

York was scheduled to compete in nonconference single games this week against Rolling Meadows, Benet Academy and Maine South. York is slated to head to Park Ridge today to face Maine South.

IC Catholic Prep softball team starts season 2-1

Hurt scores hat trick to help Knights’ girls soccer team win at Windy City invite

By Mike Miazga Correspondent The IC Catholic Prep softball team started its season with a 2-1 mark through its first three games.

The Knights opened the 2017 campaign with a 7-6 setback to Ridgewood. Ridgewood scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh after IC Catholic Prep had come back to score five runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. The Knights had 10 hits in the contest.

That five-run sixth inning was highlighted by a Georgia Mahnke single, an Emma Lytton double and a Kayla Faber-Cournane single.

Faber-Cournane took the loss. She struck out four.

Kayla Cervantes, Josie Lytton and Mahnke each had two hits in the game.

The Knights then scored a 12-0 non-conference win over Elgin Westminster Christian. IC Catholic Prep scored four runs in the third inning and eight in the fifth inning to enact the 10-run rule.

Faber-Cournane was the winning pitcher. She allowed one hit in five innings and struck out three. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

In the eight-run fifth inning, Josie Lytton had a single and Tea Carpan-

zano had a double.

In an 18-2 win over Proviso West in a five-inning non-conference game, the Knights scored six runs in the first and fourth innings en route to the win. IC Catholic Prep had 14 hits.

Kaitlyn Falduto had two hits, including a double, and drove in four runs. Her double in the first inning cleared the bases.

Falduto also was the winning pitcher. She struck out three in five innings of work.

Retired NFL player and IC Catholic Prep assistant football coach Matt Bowen will be part of an NFL-Chicago Bears panel discussion in late April at Ditka’s in Oak Brook. The event is a fundraiser for the Knights football team and other IC Catholic Prep athletic programs.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer The IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team scored a recent 5-1 win over Willowbrook in the Windy City Invitational tournament. Olivia Hurt scored three goals to notch the hat trick for the Knights. Tessa Langan and Grace Fuller each had one hit.

The Knights also downed Chicago

Christian by a score of 4-0. Kaitlyn Grady had two goals, while Langan and Bella Leslie each scored a goal.

Grady and Langan each had an assist.

Gabby Smola and Rochelle Spizzirri split time in goal and combined to record a shutout.

In a 5-2 win over Reavis in the Windy City Invitational, Langan had two goals, while Hurt, Tess Reardon and Grace Fuller each had one goal.

Fuller and Hurt had one assist each.

The Knights moved to 4-1 overall with the three wins last week.

IC Catholic Prep softball coach Frank Reaber has a nice problem on his hands that most coaches wish they had.

Reaber has almost his entire starting lineup back from a 2016 team that won 16 games.

That list includes seniors Kaitlyn Falduto (SS) and Molly Fahey (OF), juniors Josie Lytton (C) and Georgia Mahnke (1B), along with sophomores Kayla Faber-Cournane (P), Kayla Cervantes (OF) and Natalie Murillo (2B).

Key newcomers include freshmen Dani Murillo (3B), Allesandra Eccardt (OF-DH) and Brooklyn Campos (OF).

Reaber likes his team’s potential on offense. “The girls can really hit,” he said. “With all the girls we have coming back we will be a better hitting team.”

And having Faber-Cournane back

on the mound after her freshman season on the varsity is another key positive for the Knights.

“Kayla starting as a pitcher as a freshman and now being a sophomore is a big deal,” said Reaber.

“She has gained speed. She’s faster than last year.”

Reaber said his team learned plenty from last year’s campaign. “We were so young last year that we had nine or 10 games where we led in the sixth inning and lost because of inexperience.”

A key for the Knights will be their progress on the defensive end.

“We’re still young and we’re working hard to limit our errors,” said Reaber. “We made a lot of errors last year and hopefully we will be a lot better defensively this year. We’re doing a lot of fundamental work.”

Reaber sees plenty of potential with this group. “We absolutely have the opportunity to be better,” he said.

“I think we are going to have a pretty good year. If our pitching with Kayla continues to progress and we can play defense, I know we will be able

to hit the ball. We had three freshmen starting last year who are now sophomores and are even better. They should be ready and consistent.”

Reaber knows his team will have to work hard in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division.

“Glenbard South always is good in our conference,” said Reaber. “We are pretty good too. A lot of people don’t realize we are the smallest school in the conference and play in that upper bracket. Glenbard South and Riverside-Brookfield always are good in our conference.”

IC Catholic Prep is embarking on a spring break trip this week to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where it will get a heavy dose of Ohio-based schools during its five games there. “The smallest school we play has 2,100 kids,” Reaber said. “It will be a great experience for the girls. They will see some very good competition. Last year there we played six games and went 1-3 on the varsity and 0-2 at the JV level and every team was twice as big as us.”

The York boys volleyball team opened the 2017 season with a 25-21, 25-18 non-conference win against Wheaton Academy.

Evan Haug had seven kills, while John Goehl added six kills and Rio Diaz had 22 assists. Michael Pennel added four kills on five swings with no errors, while Matthew Howlett had three kills. York hit .381 as a team and made only six hitting errors in the match.

Sam Jordan-Wood and RJ Lesus each had three digs.

Timothy Christian baseball The Timothy Christian baseball team scored a 5-4 non-conference win in eight innings over Harvest Christian Academy out of Elgin in recent action.

Harvest took the lead in the first inning and held it until the bottom of the third. In that third inning, Timothy’s Shaun VanTholen, Jimmy Allen and Josh Anderson brought in one run and Noah Marrera’s single drove in the second run of the inning to put Timothy on top.

Harvest regained the lead in the top of the fourth, but Timothy pulled even in the bottom of the fifth on doubles by Anderson and Brian Schiff.

Both teams scored a run in the seventh to send it into extra innings at 4-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, Schiff led off with a single, stole second and Jonny Strube looped a single to right driving in Schiff with the winning

run.

Nick Huisman was the winning pitcher. He threw four innings and gave up one run on two hits, while striking out six. Marrera had three RBI. The Trojans had 13 hits in the game. Anderson and Schiff had doubles in the contest.
