Student detained for alleged threat at York High School By Dee Longfellow FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT

Less than a week after York High School participated in the National School Safety Walk-out against gun violence, an incident has hit close to home – a little too close to home. On Friday of last week, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chief of Police Michael Ruth announced that a 17-year-old female York High School student was facing a Felony charge for a threat she allegedly sent via Snapchat to a classmate. The juvenile appeared at a detention hearing on Friday, March 23, where Judge Michael Wolfe ordered that she be held in custody. The juvenile has been charged with one count of Disorderly Conduct, a Class 4 Felony, and one count of Possession of Cannabis. Her next court appearance was scheduled for Monday, March 26. According to Berlin’s report, it is alleged that on Thursday, March 22, the teen sent a threatening Snapchat message directed at the school to a classmate. Authorities were made aware of the Snapchat message the same day and the teen was taken into custody that evening, where she remained in custody until her hearing Friday morning. “This is the third time within the past month that my office has charged a student with making a threat against a DuPage County School,” Berlin said. “Students have got to learn that threatening a school is no joking matter. My office takes any threat to the wellbeing of our stu-

dents, teachers and school personnel very seriously and will fully investigate and prosecute anyone believed responsible for threatening a school. “Additionally, we will continue to work with schools throughout the County to ensure that our schools are as safe as they can be so that students and teachers never worry for their safety while at school. I would like to thank the student who brought this matter to the attention of authorities as well as the officials at York High School for their cooperation in this

matter. I would like to thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their work on this case.” “Schools should be a safe place for our children and any online threat will be reported and fully investigated by police,” Ruth added. Threat came to attention of authorities on Thurs. This news comes on the heels of a report from last week when Police Chief Ruth’s office issued a release about overhearing a threat. That re-

lease said that an unidentified adult had recently gone to the Elmhurst police station to say a relative of his, who is a York student, had said back in August that there would be a shooting at York on March 23. Police spoke to the student who reported the threat. She said that in August a male student approached her in a school hallway and told her the shooting would take place March 23. The student spoke to police, but was unable to identify the student who allegedly made the statement.

As a result of the information and “in light of national events compromising student safety,” more police officers – both uniformed and plainclothes – would be in the area of the high school the next few days, Ruth said. Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. The public is also reminded that if they become aware of any threat to call 9-1-1 immediately or report it to local law enforcement.
