School Board approves boundary adjustment

At their most recent meeting, School District 205 Board members voted unanimously to approve a boundary adjustment, which will carry an effective date of June 1, 2022. As of that date, any family

that purchases a home on the east side of York Street and north side of St. Charles Road and either side of Harrison Street, going north to the south side of Butterfield Road will be subject to the following provisions: • Families that purchased their

homes prior to June 1, 2022 that live in the affected boundary areas outlined below will have the choice of attending Edison Elementary School or their current school.

• Families in the current Hawthorne Elementary School attendance area who reside on the east

side of Kenmore Avenue will attend Edison. Families who reside between the east side of York Road and the west side of Kenmore Avenue that currently attend Hawthorne will have the choice of attending either Hawthorne or Edison.

• Families living on either side of

Harrison Street, going north to the south side of Butterfield Road, that are currently bused to Jackson, will be bused to Edison • Affected families in the previous item will have their choice of attending either Bryan or Sandburg middle schools.

Young Hearts for Life comes to IC Schools Student heart screening event deemed success

IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) recently hosted a successful Young Hearts for Life (YH4L) Cardiac Screening Program in partnership with the Eileen McMahon YH4L Memorial Fund.

On Thursday, Feb. 21, more than 84% of high school and middle school aged students from ICCP and Immaculate Conception Grade School (ICGS) participated in heart screenings to help identify youth at risk for sudden cardiac death. Each week sudden cardiac death claims the lives of more than 60 young adults in the United States.

“It is part of our core values and mission at IC Catholic Prep to develop the whole person – Spirit, Mind, and Body,” said Nikki Kanzia, Assistant Principal, Director of Admissions and Student Life, ICCP. “Among our top priorities is the health, safety and wellbeing of our students. We are appreciative to the many parent and community volunteers, doctors and nurses who gave generously of their time, expertise and tools to help screen our

students. ICCP is grateful for our relationships with organizations such as Young Hearts for Life as we share a common goal of taking proactive steps to promote health awareness, education and a commitment to overall student health.”

Parents together with school leadership and teachers worked to educate students on the importance of heart health and heart screenings.

This included parental consent for their middle and high school aged children to undergo a quick, simple and painless electrocardiogram (ECG).

“I’m grateful to the school leadership, teachers and the YH4L doctors and volunteers who donated their time to this important event,” said Maureen Kenneally, resident of Elmhurst. “As a mother of children that currently attend and that have graduated from ICCP, I am appreciative of these kinds of opportunities that only help me to be in the know when it comes to my children’s health.”

School Board Capsules Here’s what’s going on at District 205

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a meeting on March 19 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. Board members Jim Collins and John McDonough were absent from the meeting. Board member Shannon Ebner left before the conclusion of the meeting because of illness.

Shining Star awards presented The board presented its Shining Star awards to the members of the Focus 205 facilitating team. The team was launched in April of 2015. Board member Karen Stuefen stated the facilitating team served as the foundation for the creation of the district’s master facilities plan, and the subsequent 2018 passage of the $168.5 referendum to renovate and replace district buildings.

The board also presented Shining Star awards to Jim Borel and Rich Rosenberg, who run the Junior Achievement Titan simulation with York High School’s honors business management class. Borel is the chair of York’s business department. Rosenberg is a retired teacher and volunteer.

The Junior Achievement Titan program is an online business simulation that gives students an opportunity to run virtual companies and make decisions about prices, marketing, research and development, capital investment and charitable giving.

Students urge Board to offer compost collection The speakers during the public comments segment of the meeting included York students who urged the board to add compost collection to the district’s new waste contract. Other York students spoke during the public comments segment to suggest that the board approve the sale of reusable

Social studies curriculum, inquiry-based learning discussed The meeting also included a presentation from Mark Cohen, the district’s assistant superintendent of innovation and growth, about instructional materials for the 2019-20 school year. Cohen and Mary Henderson, the district’s associate superintendent for learning and leadership development, also addressed the board about the district’s social studies curriculum. The two administrators discussed the importance of inquiry-based learning, which takes advantage of students’ curiosity and prioritizes students’ questions, ideas and analysis. They also talked about the shift in moving away from final tests at the end of a semester, and focusing more on progression in learning throughout the course of a class.

Update on data warehouse given Mariann Lemke, the district’s executive director of research and program analysis, provided the board with an update about the district’s data warehouse. Lemke stated that the district had to look many places for information about items including test scores, grades and behavior issues. She said the district’s information is stored in different places, and that the main purpose of a data warehouse is to integrate that information and bring it together.

Last year, the board approved the district entering a contract with a vendor to integrate the district’s data system.

Lemke said the district is in the process of setup, implementation and ongoing training. That training will continue this summer, and during the 2019-20 school year.

Custodial, staffing contracts approved The board voted unanimously to

approve an agreement with Local No. 73, Service Employees International Union, regarding the district’s contract with its custodians. The board also voted unanimously to provide appropriate staffing for the 2019-20 school year.

Additionally, the board voted to approve the release of non-tenured teachers who will not be asked back because of performance concerns. The board unanimously approved a separate vote regarding the honorable dismissal of non-tenured teachers. The district may rehire those teachers as positions become available.

Contribution disbursement discussed, but not approved The board was preparing to approve a donation of up to $14,600 for the York Duke Depot from the District 205 Foundation as funded by the Elmhurst 100+ Women Who Care, but there weren’t enough votes to approve the measure. The York Duke Depot provides assistance, including clothing, personal items and school supplies, to York students in need. By that point in the meeting, Ebner had left because of illness, so there were only four board members present. Board member Margaret Harrell noted that she would vote present on that item. She stated at a previous meeting that she would vote present on all donations until the district studied its practice of accepting donations. Harrell wants the district to continue to focus on equality throughout its schools.

With Harrell voting present, the board could not approve the donation, even if the three other board members at the meeting had voted in favor of approval.

The board tabled the vote, and votes on separate donations to Jackson Elementary School, Emerson Elementary School and York, until a future meeting.

The board will hold its next regular meeting on April 9.

ECAF to celebrate 25 years with ‘Bourbon Street’ Gala

The community is invited to join the Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation as it celebrates its 25th anniversary of serving children and families in Elmhurst at “A Night on Bourbon Street” Gala on Saturday, April 13 beginning at 7 p.m. at River Forest Country Club. More about ECAF… The Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation (ECAF) began in June of 1993 as the Brent Klosterman Children’s Assistance Fund. The Elmhurst Jaycees raised funds to help get 10-year-old Brent a bone marrow transplant he needed to battle his chronic leukemia. When Brent lost his battle, the remaining funds raised in his name were used to found the Brent Klosterman Fund.

Just over 25 years ago, a group of Elmhurst residents that included Frank Catalano Jr., Debbie Klosterman, Ed Enyart, Doug Fisher, Peggy Fisher, Ken Larson, Duncan Skogsberg and Dee Longfellow continued raising funds in Brent’s name with a mission to help children with a disabling or life-threatening condition, who have a connection to Elmhurst. In 1997, the Fund reached the endowment level of $100,000 to become a Foundation. The name was changed to the Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation (ECAF).

Today ECAF is a 501(c)(3) qualifying charity composed 100% of volunteers from the Elmhurst community.

Many of our current board members are your friends and neighbors including: Mike Burroughs, Jeff Crum, Kevin Diamond, Deanna Emmerich, Julie Grainge, Dave Hansen, Bob Heiser, Terry Jaeger, Sarah Kahovec, Kim Kortes, Margo Koupas, Dan Sullivan and Steve Weatherford.

Three biggest challenges: “The biggest challenges we face as a community are maintaining/ increasing our sources of income, storm water management projects and infrastructure improvements.

Fortunately, the city’s general fund is healthy and we’ve refinanced debt, saving tax payers over $4.5 million in the last five years. We’ve grown our tax base considerably through new investment and our

sales tax revenue has grown, both of which allow us to fund projects and lower city property taxes.

“We’ve completed and/or started 11 Stormwater improvement projects, resulting in 112-acre feet and 36.5 million gallons of water mitigation. Smart money management has allowed us to begin the plan to build a new Metra station and I’m happy to report that over 80 percent of the funding has been procured through grant applications and will not be paid for by the Elmhurst taxpayer.”

I would like to take my activism to a higher level where I can contribute creative ideas to make improvements for all residents. I am running for office because I believe that Elmhurst can do better in some areas such as fiscal spending, public safety, responsible development, and very importantly, yet most easy to accomplish, sustainability.”

Three biggest challenges: 1.) Downtown construction is too aggressive, causing congestion that will have a negative, longterm impact. I support healthy development with intermission in between so that we can evaluate a situation and then move forward.

2.) Promote sustainability by residential and commercial recycling and composting. Create bike lanes and sidewalks where none exist to encourage biking and walking in lieu of driving which should help alleviate some congestion in town.

Install solar panels on city buildings and seek out electricity providers with clean energy.

3.) Residents, particularly older ones, are being driven out of Elmhurst due to cost of living. This needs to be addressed and remedied.

I believe that the way in which I grew up—immigrated to U.S. from Poland when I was 9 years old—and things I experienced created an awareness to be frugal and savvy with finances. Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Disorderly conduct

March 19 Police said a reporting officer was notified of an online threat against an employee from Bryan Middle School. Contact was made with the suspect who admitted to posting the threat on his Instagram in a private message to one of his friends. According to police, the suspect related he was upset about a previous incident that occurred between the two but did not want to hurt or threaten the individual. The suspect will be referred to peer jury.

March 16 Steven M. Mast, 36, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct/public urination and disorderly conduct/fighting in public in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 1:37 a.m. Police said officers responded to a report of a bar patron who was fighting with security personnel. Mast, whom police said was intoxicated, was asked to leave the establishment. Upon exiting the bar, he allegedly urinated on the sidewalk next to the business. Security would not allow him to re-enter and Mast allegedly shoved the security employee.

Josiah Yeaman, 45, of Wheaton, was issued citations for disorderly conduct/ breach of the peace and disorderly conduct/public intoxication in the 100 block of N. York at around 7:40 p.m. Police said officers responded to a report of a suspicious person who verbally threatened the complainant. Yeaman was located and served with a no trespass notice, according to police.

March 15 Police said Sergio Lara-Mota, 21, of Cicero, was charged with disorderly conduct, unlawful use of a weapon, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance near Route 83 and I-290 at around 5:06 p.m. Police said Lara-Mota was involved in a hit and run traffic crash with the victim. He later exited his vehicle and reached inside his jacket in an aggressive manner, leading the victim to believe the suspect had a weapon, according to police. The suspect then reportedly fled on foot from the scene. He was located by responding units, taken into custody, and transported to the station.

Lara-Mota also was found to be in possession of brass knuckles, police said.

March 14 Tyrone Wideman, 39, of Oak Park, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/public intoxication in the 200 block of E. North at around 4:25 p.m.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disturbance

March 21 A 41-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 100 block of Virginia at around 12:59 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect caused an injury to the victim by holding her down in the bed.

March 17 A 38-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 300 block of Sunnyside at around 12:21 p.m. Police said a

March 18 Corey Griffin, 41, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and driving without lights subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and York at around 2:21 a.m.

March 17 Abraham Martinez, 21, of Chicago, was charged with DUI-drugs and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Washington at around 2:53 a.m.

Philip McLaughlin, 39, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI and impeding traffic subsequent to a report of a man slumped over the wheel near North and West at around 8:54 p.m.

Brennan S. Weaver, 28, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, disobeying a traffic control device, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 3:47 a.m.

March 16 Ashley B. Perry, 25, of Bolingbrook, was charged with DUI, two counts of improper lane usage and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Prairie at around 1:47 a.m.

Ruben Flores-Villalob, 33, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and three counts of improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 12:44 a.m.

March 14 Kelly A. Koch, 30, of Oak Park, was charged with DUI and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 8:20 p.m.

Harassment, threats

March 14 A victim in the 300 block of W. St. Charles told police at around 12 noon that a suspect had been harassing her while in the hallways of the high school. The parents of both students were informed of the situation and both students have been asked to avoid contact with each other.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, possession of alternative nicotine product

March 20 Police said that subsequent to a search of a juvenile suspect’s backpack at York High School at around 10:10 a.m., school staff located a base for a vaporizer. When confronted, police said the juvenile suspect admitted to flushing the top portion of the vaporizer down the toilet. He was also found to be in possession of a charger for the base. The juvenile suspect was cited for possession of an alternative nicotine product and released to a parent.

CALL 800-222-TIPS March 19 Nikola Narancic, 37, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance subsequent to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 400 block of W. Lake at around 8:55 p.m. Police said Narancic was found to be wanted out of Cook County, was taken into custody and was found to be in possession of cocaine.

Tracy Novak, 47, of Lombard, was charged with felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to an accident near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 3:41 p.m. Police said Novak also was found to have an active warrant.

Two incidents of possession of cannabis and/ or possession of drug paraphernalia were reported at York High School. In the first incident at around 10:57 a.m. police said a suspect was found to be in possession of a vape pen containing THC and was issued a citation for possession of cannabis. In the second incident at around 12:07 p.m. police said a reporting officer was contacted by a dean at York High School in reference to a suspect who was in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. The suspect was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

March 18 Walter Elerby, 40, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 100 block of W. Lake at around 12:12 a.m.

March 17 Santo J. Dibenardo, 49, of Addison, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, failure to signal when required, no rear registration plate light and no insurance near Lake and I-290 at around 12:16 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, a search of Dibenardo’s person and vehicle yielded cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Estevan Lopez, 25, of Blue Island, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, while Gabriel Martinez, 34, of Chicago, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Addison at around 11:07 p.m.

Johnathan M. McGee, 21, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a suspicious vehicle investigation in the 900 block of S. Riverside at around 12:47 a.m.

Brenda S. Ortiz-Gonzalez, 21, of Elgin was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia; Brandon Reynada-Estrada, 20, of Elgin, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and driving without headlights when required; and Alisha M. Feliciano, 20, of Elgin, was issued a citation for consumption of alcohol by a minor subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 2:52 a.m.

Jacqueline Vega, 33, of Stone Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and illegally tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Willow at around 1:42 a.m.

March 15 Kevin Litwin, 32, of Elgin, was charged with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia and expired registration in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 8:06 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a drug investigation reference the sale of cannabis wax, the suspect was taken into custody during the alleged delivery of cannabis wax. Located inside the suspect’s vehicle was additional cannabis wax and drug paraphernalia, according to police.

Nelson E. Suarez, 39, of Davenport, Fla., was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious vehicle in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 1:51 a.m.

Kevin Zagar, 21, of Naperville, was charged with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 10:15 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a drug investigation reference the sale of THC oil cartridges, the suspect was taken into custody and a search of his vehicle yielded additional THC oil cartridges, according to police.

A juvenile suspect at York High School was issued a citation for possession of cannabis at around 10 a.m. Police said officers responded to a report of a student who possessed a white powdery substance. A search of the suspect’s backpack yielded a white powdery substance which tested negative for drugs and a liquid cannabis vape cartridge.

Suspicious circumstances

March 18 Police said at 6:30 p.m. that the witness, an employee of Elmhurst Hospital, reported that a 16-year-old female patient suddenly left the hospital prior to being discharged. The patient was signed in by a female who purported being the patient’s mother. However, the witness discovered that the patient’s real mother was unaware her daughter was in the hospital. An investigation is pending.

March 15 A victim in the 800 block of Parkside advised at 12:46 p.m. that an unknown suspect described as a white male approximately 30 years old with short, dark hair and wearing athletic clothing approached her front door and aggressively knocked. The suspect asked the victim if she remembered him, and also asked her to unlock her screen door. When the victim’s husband called out to the victim, the suspect entered the passenger side of an unknown SUV and left the area.

The suspect’s vehicle was a newer model SUV which sat low to the ground, and may have had tinted windows. A neighborhood canvas did not reveal any evidence.

March 20 The Oak Park Police Department notified the Elmhurst Police Department that it recovered

an abandoned vehicle on the side of I-290/Austin which was possibly stolen from a dealership in Elmhurst. Officers responded to the dealership to find the service door forced open and two vehicles damaged. One of the vehicles was used to ram the service bay door. An investigation is pending. The vehicle recovered by Oak Park was taken to the Elmhurst Police Department for processing.

March 19 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of S. Kenilworth at around 9:51 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used her name and Social Security number to open a Comcast account in September of 2018. Further investigation is pending.

A victim in the 700 block of N. York told police at around 10:25 p.m. that they serviced the suspect’s vehicle and there was an outstanding bill. A short time later the victim stated the vehicle and suspect were gone. The victim believes the suspect took the vehicle without paying for the service. A reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect with no results at this time.

A victim in the 300 block of N. Oaklawn told police that on March 17, she allowed her son to use her vehicle and he had not returned it. The suspect was contacted and stated he would return the vehicle. At 9 p.m., the suspect stated he returned the vehicle, handing the keys to the victim. At 9:04 p.m., the victim reported the vehicle was never returned. An investigation is pending.

March 18 Walter Ellis, 48, of Chicago, was charged with two counts of felony unlawful possession of fictitious identification in the 400 block of W. Lake at around 2 p.m. Police said Ellis attempted to purchase a new vehicle using a fraudulent driver’s license and Social Security number.

Retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of N. Palmer at around 7:07 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect described as an Hispanic male, 5’8”, 120 pounds, wearing blue jeans, a black jacket and a black beanie cap entered the premise, removed a bag full of over-the-counter medication and fled on foot.

March 17 Theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 1:36 p.m. Police said officers responded to the store for a report of a stolen purse that was taken from the victim’s cart.

There was an attempt to use the victim’s credit card at a Walgreens located in Westchester. An investigation is pending.

Theft was reported at a car dealership in the 500 block of W. Lake at around 4:48 p.m. Police said officers responded for the burglar alarm at the above location. Upon arrival, the overhead door was observed to have broken glass. The building was cleared and key holders responded to the scene. According to police, video footage shows multiple suspects described as black males enter the business and remove two vehicles. A BMW 535I N39+560 and a BMW X6M 9980IT were taken from the business. Both vehicles were entered in to LEADS as stolen.

March 16 While on foot patrol near First and Addison at around 10:03 p.m., officers witnessed a bicyclist fall from his bicycle. Police said Brandon M. Fulmer, 20, of Downers Grove, appeared highly intoxicated and was in possession of two bottles of whiskey. Fulmer admitted that he consumed alcohol while under age and stole the two bottles of whiskey from a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller, according to police.

Fulmer was charged with retail theft, possession of alcohol by a minor, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication and possession of cannabis, and was released to his parent.

Theft was reported in the 1000 block of S. Prospect at around 10:48 p.m. A victim told police that while attending a dance, he placed his coat containing his car keys and wallet on a table. When he returned to the table to retrieve his coat, he was unable to locate it.

March 15 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of W. Avery at around 10:28 a.m.

Warrant arrest

March 16 Police said officers conducted a traffic stop near Kimbell and Walnut at around 8:07 p.m. having knowledge that the registered owner, Tatum Wittmer, 20, of Elmhurst, had an original warrant from the Bensenville Police Department.

A search of the vehicle was conducted and cannabis was located, according to police.

Wittmer also was issued a citation for possession of cannabis.

“I believe what most qualifies me to serve on the board is my experience in our schools through volunteer work. I have worked closely with students, parents, teachers, administrators and board members over the years and can look at an issue from many different perspectives. My unique experience has given me a broad understanding of the issues our community cares about. Through all I have learned

in our schools I believe I can hit the ground running if elected to the board and begin working immediately on the challenges we will face.”

Women of Bethel to host annual Spring Tea On Saturday, April 13 at 12:30 p.m., the Women of Bethel, of Bethel United Church of Christ, will hold their 21st annual Spring Tea in the church’s Welcome Center, located at 315 E. St. Charles Road.

The event features a full-tea menu in an elegant setting followed by dramatic book reviewer Jenny Riddle’s one-woman show, “Catherine the Great.” In her presentations, Jenny motivates, educates, and entertains audiences with her unique interpretations of best-selling books in which she becomes the characters telling their real-life stories. For more than 15 years, Jenny has been delighting audiences with her captivating style of storytelling. At the end of each review, she also shares her current “favorite reads.”

A sophomore at York High School, Downey says he has loved nature and the outdoors since he first joined Cub Scouts at age 6.

“I grew passionate about everything Scouting—the camping, the hiking, and the sense that you were making a difference to help the community,” he said.

Downey says working with Elmhurst Public Library was an ideal fit for his Eagle Scout service project.

He says he has fond memories of attending storytimes and browsing the shelves for books as a small child. As he got older, he served as a Library volunteer.

“The Library was a big part of my childhood and I am thrilled to give back in some way,” he said.

“Jake did a stellar job of taking this project and running with it,” said Marcy Rodriguez, assistant director of Elmhurst Public Library. “He put his team together, doled out responsibilities, and managed the many details and logistics of this multi-faceted project. It was a pleasure working with him.

“Now, because of his hard work, Library patrons have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors—while using these adventure backpacks as a starting point to delve deeper into learning about and exploring nature.”

Paul Rodgers, Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout Coach for Troop 82, said

the rank of Eagle Scout is reached by only four percent of Boy Scouts.

Eagle Scout service projects are designed to teach conceptualizing, planning, budgeting, and leadership skills, all learned while creating something beneficial for the community.

“Jake did well throughout this process by leading every step along the way,” said Rodgers. “He engaged in healthy and regular communication with his volunteers and the Library.

He also learned new skills such as video making and broadcast formats.

Ultimately, he contributed to a worthy cause and helped a community anchor.”

Each colorful backpack contains items based on a theme: geocaching, aquatics, animals, plants, rocks and minerals, and Elmhurst history.

Each bag may be checked out for one week, with up to two renewals.

Extended loan time for vacation may be requested. Instructional videos for the backpacks may be viewed on the Library’s YouTube page.

“Similar to our Library of Extraordinary Things collection, which include kitchen, craft, and tech items, this new collection encourages learning through action and engagement with others,” said Rodriguez.

“My main hope for these backpacks is that it will inspire people to venture into the outdoors to learn more about the world around us,” said Downey. “The natural world is a fascinating place that offers a lot to explore.”

Attorney warns of loss of tax refunds

Local tax attorney Patrick T. Sheehan warns that if you have not yet filed your federal Form 1040 tax return for 2015 with the IRS, any refund listed on that tax return will soon be barred by the refund statute of limitation.

“Generally speaking, a taxpayer has three years from the due date of the tax return to claim a refund for that year, plus any extension,” Sheehan said. “The due date of the 2015 federal Form 1040 tax returns was April 18, 2016. If an extension was not timely filed, the expiration of the refund statute of limitation for 2015 is April 15, 2019. If you have not yet filed your federal Form 1040 tax return for 2015 with the IRS, I strongly urge you to do so on or before April 15, 2019, to ensure that you receive the refund to which you are entitled.”

Per a recent press release, the IRS announced that 1.2 million people should have filed federal tax returns for 2015 but didn’t, leaving $1.4 billion in unclaimed refunds for 2015.

According to IRS estimates, half of the potential refunds for 2015 are $879 or more.

If your tax return for 2015 is filed

on or after April 15, 2019, and if an extension was not timely filed, the law bars any refund to which you are entitled.

Even if you have unpaid liabilities for other years, the lost refund does not apply to those years.

“The application of this law acts to deny refunds to which hard-working Americans are otherwise entitled,” Sheehan said.

Unfortunately, many millions of dollars are lost in this fashion every year simply because taxpayers did not file their tax returns within the applicable limitation period. I would rather see these funds go into the pockets of the taxpayers who earned this money instead of being kept by the federal government.”

Cullerton aims to ease blood draw anxieties for those with disabilities Having blood drawn can be a very anxious thing for a child with autism. Thanks to Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park), medical professionals may soon have access to training to help ensure individuals and developmental disabilities are as comfortable as possible.

I’ve been using the Dupage County Senior Subsidized Taxi Program for several years and all of a sudden, the county decided to cancel it this February. I was stuck with nine of the $5 coupons, which they refuse to refund.

I have spoken to several people at the county and at Addison Township, and either they have not heard of the program or they say there’s nothing they can do. I was told that a notice went out at some time to notify people of dropping this plan but I did not get one and I wonder how many other seniors did not. I’m getting sick of the way this Township and County treats seniors and wonder if there’s anything you can do?

After I read Dee Longfellow’s front page article about The Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts (ECPA) proposal to build on First Street in Elmhurst, I decided that our City Council members were out of their minds when they okayed this

sensory issues are taken into account when medical professionals perform procedures such as blood draws.”

Senate Bill 1214 passed the Senate’s Committee on Public Health with bipartisan support and will move to the full Senate for consideration.

CONTRACT DOCUMENTS The work, in general, shall consist of the design, construction, furnishing, delivery and installation of Two (2) 4 foot by 20 foot digital signs and all related equipment.

The signs will be installed over the Palmer Drive Underpass, on facing north attached the First Street Bridge and the second facing south, and attached to the Park Avenue Bridge. The signs shall be installed in fully weatherproof cabinets.

This work shall be performed in accordance with the Contract Documents, copies of which may be obtained after 4:00 p.m. on Monday, March 25, 2019, from the City Clerk’s Office, 209 N York Road, Elmhurst, IL 60126 All proposals must be submitted on the forms provided and in compliance with the Instructions to Bidders. Submission of a bid shall be conclusive assurance and warranty that the bidder has examined the plans, the site of the work and the local conditions affecting the contract, and understands all of the requirements for performance of the work. The bidder will be responsible for all errors in its proposal resulting from failure or neglect to conduct an in-depth examination. The City of Elmhurst will in no case be responsible for any costs, expenses, losses, or changes in anticipated profits resulting from such failure or neglect of the bidder.

The bidder shall not take advantage of any errors or omission in the plans or proposal.

York boys track team enjoys fruitful indoor season Dukes won two invitationals and WSC Silver crown

York can’t complain about how it performed during the indoor portion of the 2019 boys track and field season.

The Dukes won two invitational titles at home and at Proviso West and won the WSC Silver Division title.

Back for the Dukes from last year’s team are seniors Brendan Hill (pole vault) and Colin Wallace (pole vault), along with juniors Richard Buehling (long and triple jump), Kam Stearns (triple jump), Max Santiago (hurdles), Daniel Klysh (middle distance), Ethan Kern (middle distance) and Jack Wall (throws), along with sophomore Christopher Radcliff (sprints). Klysh was part of York’s all-state 3,200 relay team as a sophomore a year ago.

Key newcomers to the group are seniors Josiah Scott (long jump) and Ian Watson-Hirsch (sprints), juniors Michael Moriarty (middle distance) and Max Austin (sprints), along with sophomore sprinter Inemesit Akpakpan.

“We are a complete team this year,” said York coach Charlie Kern.

“We won the conference meet by scoring in 14 out of 16 events. We have a great work ethic and a desire to be our best for each other. We have great leadership in each event area.

These leaders are helping the new kids to understand the program.”

Kern said York will have a better of idea of what its relays look like when it gets into its outdoor competition schedule. “We have our largest pool of quality athletes who will lead us to fast times,” he said.

Kern added there is a chance for York to have a large contingent at the state meet in May. “We have the chance to have many athletes in the field and on the track to qualify for state,” he said. “We are very young and it will be fun to watch how they handle the stress of varsity competition. We exceeded our goal to finish in the top three at the indoor conference championship. This success has fueled our training and causes us to continue to work together and compete. Our primary goal is to train and compete, and individual and team accomplishments will follow.”

Timothy Christian boys tennis coach Keith Mills has high hopes for his 2019 team that went 6-6 overall and finished second in the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division with a 3-3 mark.

“We want to play smart tennis and stay in matches mentally,” he said.

“If we do that, a 13-2 dual-meet record is a high goal but doable. There are only two or three teams on the schedule that we may struggle with.

Second place in the conference is our goal behind Wheaton Academy, which may win the Class A state title this year.”

Back for the Trojans are senior Jack Rhiner, who played No. 1 singles primarily last year and finished with a 15-8 record. Micah Bosman, a junior, played No. 1 doubles last year and posted an 18-5 mark, while senior Ben Rowell won 10 matches at No. 2 singles. Bosman earned all-conference accolades last year.

New to the team are freshman Winston Chen (No. 1 singles) and senior James Shervheim, who will play

No. 1 doubles.

“We bring a lot of experience and should have depth,” said Mills.

“We have six seniors in the top eight with others battling to get there. We should have several players battling to get into the top eight as well, which is a good thing to have. Seniors Shervheim and Rhiner will play No. 1 doubles mostly and have a solid chance to go to state. Bosman and Rowell will be a tough No. 2 doubles team throughout the year.

Mills said right now the team probably is a tad stronger on the doubles side, “but Chen will be a force in singles for the next four years,” the coach noted. “He should be able to get 20 wins this year and will have three or four tough matchups with state qualifiers, but should learn from those matches. Micah Bosman may play second doubles this year for duals and first doubles in tournaments.

Micah is a junior who is a very savvy doubles player and improves with every match. He narrowly missed qualifying for state with a new partner and should have 20-plus wins as well.”

Mills likes what he’s seen so far early on. “They are confident and very competitive,” he said. “We have much more stability in the lineup and far fewer question marks.”

Will Cooke had an eventful day at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and two walks. Six different IC Catholic Prep players had hits in the contest.

Thomas Hilgart was the winner in relief. He pitched the final four innings and allowed no earned runs while striking out four. Kevin Cooke started and struck out two in three innings.

York boys volleyball team taking it ‘one set at a time’

The York boys volleyball team has a specific mantra coach Ken Dowdy would like it to follow.

“The mantra for this season has to be ‘one set at a time,’” the coach explained. “If we’re going to be successful we can’t look ahead. It’s too easy to do even for me. We have the talent to be very successful, yet we cannot be enamored with lofty season goals if we cannot meet match goals. The ceiling is very high with this group of players, but I would prefer they focus on winning each match. If we can get to that mindset, the results will take

Why is the ceiling so high? For starters senior 6-0 libero Collin McCarville is back after earning a number of all-state honors from various media outlets. He finished with a school-record 421 digs and 15 aces.

Senior 6-2 outside hitter Ethan Chael registered 29 kills and 84 digs, while senior Pat Resing, a 6-3 rightside hitter, had 87 kills and 50 blocks on a team that won 20 matches and went 2-4 in the tough West Suburban Conference Silver.

New to the squad are seniors Matt Reihus (6-1, setter), Riley Wilson (510, setter), Aidan Hickey (6-1, outside hitter), along with sophomores Jacob Wiggins (6-2 right-side hitter), Sam Walsh (6-5, middle blocker) and Kevin Maranda (6-3, middle blocker).

“It’s the deepest team I’ve ever coached with 12 seniors and three very good sophomores,” said Dowdy. “Our offense should be one of the most diverse I’ve had, but we have to be more consistent in serve-receive. Fortunately, I have two very good setters in Reishus and Wilson, who run a very efficient offense. We have a lot of talented players, but as a coaching staff we still

are trying to figure out a few positions.

It’s a good problem to have and there are some freshmen and sophomores who have made some pretty good impressions these first few weeks.”

As Dowdy hinted, defense is a bit of a work in progress right now. “Fortunately Collin McCarville is the anchor of the group,” he said. “He’s easily the best libero I’ve ever coached.

His passing and defense is stellar and I have no doubt he’ll be getting all-area if not all-state recognition this year. He’s so great on his feet and gets touches on balls that frequently impress me.”

That said, Dowdy noted York has a

strong supporting cast in Mathieson, Ivan Cabellero and Lake Park transfer Josh Jacob. “They have made some great strides over the past few weeks, but we’re looking for some more consistency from the group, especially from a serve-receive perspective, he said. “Freshman Jake Reishus has been impressive as well recently while filling in for some absent players.”

Dowdy is, however, optimistic about his team scoring points. “Our offense should be very good, but it all depends on whether we can run our middles,” he said. “Sam Walsh is only a sophomore, but he has the potential to be one of the best middle hitters to play for me. He has the ability to dominate a match, but we have to be able to run him, so that will be precipitated by our serve-receive. He puts up a great block and has worked very hard in the off-season with his club team and has received some interest from college coaches.”

Wiggins and Chael also have caught the coach’s eye. “Jacob Wiggins is a great student-athlete who can play anywhere in the front row, which is a versatility not often seen in volleyball,” said Dowdy. “He can jump out of the gym, possesses a very big block and really is a player I have to have on the court for us to be successful. Ethan primarily played defense last year, but I expect him to have a great year hitting on the outside. He’s great at working around the block, yet he’s even greater defensively, getting touches on most balls that outsides cant.”

Hickey, Jacobs and Wiggins, and possibly some underclassmen, likely will compete for the other outside hitter position, Dowdy noted.

Reising is transitioning from a middle blocker slot last year to the right side this spring. “Pat is one of the keys to our success,” said Dowdy. “You have to get to know Pat to really understand how influential he can be to a team. He’s one of the most positive players I’ve ever coached, always reflecting on his performance and trying to improve. He’s an unbelievably great kid and I am looking forward to seeing him excel this season. He’s a big block on the right side and has the ability to put down a ball with authority.”

Matt Reishus and Wilson run the team’s 6-2 offense. “We’ll run the 6-2 for the first time in my career, but I expect it to yield great results,” said Dowdy. “Matt and Riley both are very consistent setters and great servers who should be able to put our hitters in the best position to get kills. Their improvement on defense will be a key, but I expect them both to have great seasons.”

Senior leadership also is in abundance for the Dukes. “The senior leadership has been awesome and there has been great camaraderie amongst the players these first few weeks,” said Dowdy. “The seniors understand that I cannot put 12 players on the court and they have been overwhelmingly supportive of the underclassmen that have practiced with the varsity team.

That unselfishness, and support of our younger players, is what has really impressed me, yet I’m not surprised. It’s an overall great group of student-athletes that I feel very fortunate to coach.

If they maintain that attitude the sky is the limit for this team.”

Chiefs Squirt hockey team wins championship Squad ends season on 13 game winning streak The Chiefs Squirt White hockey team recently completed a dominant end-of-season run by capturing its Northwest Hockey League title with an impressive 3-1 win in the tournament’s final game. The Chiefs beat the Chicago Horned Frogs Black before a raucous crowd at the Chicago Blackhawk’s MB Financial Ice Center to capture the crown.

“This championship was a true team effort,” said Coach Brian Carroll. “In the end, our team played at a level that proved to be far better than the sum of its parts.”

Chiefs White utilized that teamfirst attitude to best the Franklin Park Panthers, Chicago Fury and Chiefs Blue teams in order to advance to the Championship game. In the finale, the Horned Frogs proved to be tough competition for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs started sluggishly against the Horned Frogs and after a rare team defensive lapse, the Horned Frogs took a 1-0 lead. The Chiefs came roaring back and tied the score when defenseman Jake Keller put a shot on net and center Tatiana Kallianis pounded home the rebound for the tying goal.

Early in the third period the Chiefs took the lead when Santino Caponigri passed the puck to Marco Gattone at the point. The defender fired a shot through a crowd in front of the Horned Frogs goalie that found the back of the net for a lead that the Chiefs would not relinquish.

The Chiefs defense, led by Connor Hood, Lucas Kabat, Gattone and Keller, limited the Horned Frogs offensive opportunities. Chief’s goalie Peter Kallianis made 20 saves on his way to victory.

gathered the puck and passed it to Josh Redick on the half board. The winger chipped the puck up to Lucas Potyrala in the neutral zone. Potyrala expanded the Chiefs lead when he split the Horned Frogs defense and lit the lamp with a wrist shot.

Forewards Brady Carroll, Cooper Forsberg, Tommy Hosler, Madden Taylor and Brooke Vogel provided strong back-checking efforts to fendoff the Horned Frogs comeback attempts as time wound down.

The Chief’s victory was the 13th straight win for the team. During that streak, the team outscored its opponents 68 to 8 and captured the Presidents Day Chicago Cup and South Bend Irish Cup Tournament titles in addition to the NWHL banner.

“We worked really hard this season,” said Redick. “Winning was great but everyone got along so it was fun.”

Things are looking up for the Timothy Christian softball team.

The Trojans have numerous key players back from a team that went 0-21 last year, plus a key newcomer.

Back for coach Lindsay Slovey are seniors Lauren Gehrke (pitcher and infield), Allison Heersink (shortstop) and junior Kelly Tameling (third base).

A key newcomer to the team is freshman Emily Slovey, who pitches and plays first and third base.

“After a few rough years our offense and defense are looking up,” said Lindsay Slovey. “We look good offensively and are looking forward to some of the younger girls really stepping up.”

The Trojans also have depth in the pitching circle. “I am looking for-

ward to having a few girls being able to pitch this year and I am excited we have a young pitcher who can help from the mound,” said Slovey.

Positive attitudes are in abundance as well. “The attitudes of our girls are great,” said Slovey. “They are ready to learn and ready to compete. They always hold their heads high.”

That group of Gehrke, Heersink, Tameling and Emily Slovey are key to Timothy’s forward movement this season. “The returning players and newcomer will hold the key to competing this year,” said Slovey. “We have struggled and I think we are ready to compete this year. Watch Allison Lauren, Elly and Emily to help us quite a bit this year offensively, from the mound and defensively.”

Timothy also has numbers on its side this season. “They are such a great group of girls,” the coach said.

“I am truly blessed to be part of this program. We almost lost the softball program and a few of these girls helped pull through and now we have 20 girls on the roster. They love the game. It’s great to be around them.”
