The community continues to rally against COVID-19 coronavirus A statement from the City of Elmhurst

The following message was released last week from City Manager Jim Grabowski…

Each day we continue to be challenged with the rapidly changing information received from our Federal, State, and County Representatives on COVID-19 on the measures being taken to prevent the spread of the virus.

At this time there are over 1,200 confirmed cases in the State of Illinois, 95 of which are in DuPage County.

Our top priority continues to be the residents of Elmhurst as we evaluate ways in which we can maintain our level of service while safeguarding our citizens and employees.

Taking into consideration the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations on social distancing and the preventative procedures occurring across the nation, the City will be taking additional precautionary measures with access restriction to City facilities.

As of March 18 at 5 p.m., City Hall will continue to operate while being closed to the public. All meetings and events have been postponed.

City Hall employees will be readily

available to communicate with residents remotely during normal business hours. City business including transactions for utility bills, vehicle stickers, permits and all other payments can be conducted online, over the phone, or by mail. Residents are asked to call (630) 530-3000 or visit Elmhurst.org to conduct this business. Additionally, a drop box in the City Hall parking lot can be used for document and payment delivery.

Essential operations including Police, Fire and Public Works will continue.

Over the coming weeks, you’ll find timely information and updates on our City’s website to help you and your family stay safe. We also

encourage you to follow the City’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and to subscribe to our Alert Center. We will continue to send E-Newsletters with updates on the virus as it relates to our community. Please also make sure you are subscribed to receive our CodeRED Alerts. We will use this method to communicate any information requiring a direct and immediate need to take action for public safety. These notifications will enable us to provide you with critical information quickly in a variety of situations.

Finally, not to anyone’s surprise, we have received many calls from residents asking how they can help.

This reconfirms my pride in serving

a community that shows compassion in times of need.

My ask to you at this time is that you listen to the recommendations of the CDC to help reduce the spread and risk of the virus in our community. Continue to remain smart in practicing social distancing. Call an elderly or unhealthy neighbor and ask if they can use your support while remaining distant. Support our local businesses in the safest way possible.

Let’s continue to protect each other by understanding and following the guidelines set forth by healthcare professionals.

A strange sight on a Saturday On Saturday, March 21, it was an eerie sight at Elmhurst Crossing at the corner of St. Charles Road and Route 83, where the Kohl’s lot stands completely empty. It was one of the many casualties of area businesses over the past few weeks with the onset of the COVID-19 Coronavirus. Some stores were open until 5 p.m., when Governor JB Pritzker ordered a shutdown.

Thank you to Elmhurst City Hall, Elmhurst Fire Department, Elmhurst Police Department, Elmhurst-Metropolitan Family Services Senior Services, DuPage Senior Citizens Council, Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry, Tri-Town YMCA, and Giving DuPage. The Elmhurst community is grateful for the collaborative effort that is being made through these agencies and their residents.

This information is our effort to inform Elmhurst and other DuPage County residents who to contact to volunteer their services and to share information they have about older adults in need. When the COVID-19 pandemic ends, this counseling service will resume provision of in-home and in-office visits, as well as support groups. D205 appoints new principal of York High School The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Shahe Bagdasarian as the new principal of York High School. He will begin his duties on July 1, 2020.

Dr. Shahe Bagdasarian returns to Elmhurst D205 from Glenbard East High School in Lombard, IL where he currently serves as principal. He began his career as a special education teacher and football coach at Elmwood Park High School, Elmwood Park, IL as Dr. Shahe well as a special education teacher and case manager Bagdasarian at York High School. Dr. Bagdasarian went on to become dean of students at York before his career took him to Glenbard East H.S., where he served as both assistant principal for student services and then assistant principal for instruction until assuming the principalship in 2015.

In addition, Shahe holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education from the State of New York – College of Buffalo and a Master of Science Degree in Special Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He will graduate with his doctorate degree in educational leadership and policy studies from the Urbana-Champaign campus this May. Dr. Bagdasarian will focus on supporting students academically and social emotionally in order to maximize learning and strengthening the communication and collaboration with D205 middle schools to best prepare and meet the needs of students.

“He has a proven track record of improving student performance and ensuring that individual departments achieve goals for student growth that are consistent with school and district priorities. This has included an intense focus on ensuring consistency in assessment practices in line with current research,” D205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer said.

“He also led a focus on equity that has increased access to rigorous curriculum and other school opportunities for all students and implemented the supports necessary to ensure that all students learn and grow. Part of his approach was intentional articulation of school improvement planning with feeder middle schools, which will translate well to District 205. His talents and experiences are a perfect fit for York at this time. I look forward to beginning our working relationship,” Dr. Moyer added.

Of his return, Dr. Bagdasarian shared his excitement to lead York High School for this next generation of learners: “It is an honor to return to District 205 as the Principal of York High School and serve the Elmhurst community,” Bagdasarian said. “York Community High School has a strong tradition of academic, athletic and extracurricular excellence.”

By Steven Koch Last week, the Independent did its best to be in touch with members of Elmhurst’s restaurant and bar community to see how they are faring during these uncertain times of the COVID-19 Coronavirus.

Asked how he was doing since the Governor’s order to shut down restaurants and bars in Illinois, Mr. G’s restaurant owner Steve Dacy had this to say: “I’ve never seen anything like this before… “I’ll survive. I’ve been here for 17 years.”

Eight-year veteran waitress June Csech (pronounced: check) gazes out the window of Mr. G’s restaurant on south York St., hoping the tide will turn and the customers will return. “I live in an apartment, thank God, I’ve been saving. After next month, I don’t know what I’m going to do.

But I’ll deal with it.”

“It was hard to close our doors for dine in. People had to be turned away.

“People did not know they we weren’t open for dine-in. I fear that they’re not paying attention to the news [about Covid-19] and that worries me.”

Do you think closing was a good idea?

“Not really, Jewel and everyone else is open and there are tons of people in there.”

“People are coughing on each other in stores.

“In restaurants, we sanitize everything between customers.

“We are all certified in health and sanitation. We’re trained for this. We pay for the training. The money comes out of our own pockets.

“I live in an apartment, thank God, I’ve been saving. After next month, I don’t know what I’m going to do. But I’ll deal with it. My landlord is cool but it’s not his responsibility to help me though.”

She’s currently the only on-staff employee at Mr. G’s during this crisis. The other servers are currently not working due to the lack of customers. The owner is doing all the cooking himself.

“We need to know what the government wants to do, and it would be a shame to put the little guy out of business. I feel sorry for my comrades, how are they going to survive?”

Silverado’s Jack Island: ‘we’ll make it through’

Jack Island, owner of Silverado Grill on Spring Road, is braving the storm, following a successful St. Patrick’s parade day on March 7. “Everybody is in a daze. Nobody saw this coming,” he said. “We will make it through this. We have a motto with our staff. ‘Do small things with great love.’”

“When the governor gave the order.”

Have you ever experienced a loss in business like this before?

“I’ve never seen anything like this before. During the recession, people still needed to eat.

“I’ll survive. I’ve been here for 17 years.

“Restaurants cost a lot to run.

Profit margins are small. I would love to help out my servers and employees but with little money coming in, I don’t have any way to support them financially. I still have rent and ComEd. If they want to cut some slack, then I could give my staff something to help them through this.”

How many years have you been in business?

“17 years, since 2002.”

What does owning a restaurant mean to you?

“It’s what I’ve always done. It’s the only thing I know how to do.”

What are you doing to stay afloat?

“Just pickup orders. We’re hitting the limits.”

On weekends, Mr. G’s is usually packed. Other than Facebook, Steve told the Independent he doesn’t know how else to tell his customers that they’re still open for takeout.

Do you fear that you may have to close your doors for good?

“A couple of weeks after the [March] 31st, it’s going to be tough to stay open.

“I care most about the employees, they’re the ones hurting the most.

“Every dollar that comes in, 95 percent goes out. It’s different from a grocery store. Food cost is 30% of our menu price alone. That’s the standard for most restaurants.

“The production company of 20th Century Fox was going to film a pilot in my restaurant ‘The Big Leap.’

“We were going to close the restaurant to film it here, the contract was signed and everything.

That would’ve been a nice payday.

“It was postponed due to the virus. It was set to happen Monday the 15th.”

Steve is looking forward to when this passes so they can get started on filming again.

Jack Island - Owner Silverado started in 1996. Jack bought out his partner Dave Walradt in 2007 and has spend his whole life in the business.

When was the moment you realized things were starting to go wrong?

“We had a somewhat normal weekend. We realized Sunday that we had to shut down.”

How are your servers and employees reacting to this?

“Everybody is in a daze. Nobody saw this coming. I knew I’d be open for carry out and hire a delivery service.”

What are you doing to stay afloat?

“This is the first day of delivery (March 18th). We’re still trying to figure this all out.”

Jack said he was thinking of having his servers perform delivery, if they get the word out.

Have you experienced anything like this before?

“The only thing I can compare to this is a day and a half power outage. Other than that this is totally new.”

Do you fear you may have to shut your doors for good?

“I haven’t put it to a calculator yet to find out how many months we can withstand this. I’d rather not think about it. “ “I don’t even have the heat turned on. We have fresh food though, so we have to run the cooler.”

On Monday, March 16, the final day, Silverado sold out of their famous corned beef that they had prepared for St. Patrick’s Day. “We will make it through this. We have a motto with our staff. ‘Do small things with great love.’”

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

with a complainant at around 4:56 a.m. who stated her son exposed himself to an unknown suspect via webcam. The unknown suspect recorded the video chat and then demanded he wire him money or he would share the video on social media.

Assault, battery March 17 A victim at Elmhurst Hospital told police at around 3:50 p.m. that she and a supervisor had an argument over wearing a mask at work.

During the argument, the suspect reportedly grabbed her by the arms. The victim wanted the matter documented and did not wish to pursue complaints.

March 13 Joseph M. Cascella, 24, of Elmhurst, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and violation of bail bond in the 600 block of Crockett at around 11:40 p.m. Police said Cascella was located within the residence and was taken into custody. As he was being escorted to the squad car, he allegedly spat in an officer’s face.

Criminal trespass, criminal damage March 15-March 16 A victim in the 400 block of Emery Lane told police that an unknown suspect(s) damaged his garage doors sometime between the above dates.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance March 15 A 47-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 400 block of W. Fremont at around 12:04 p.m. A victim reported that the suspect scratched his face. The reporting officer met with the victim and noticed a laceration on the victim’s face, which was bleeding.

March 13 Police said an officer responded to Berens Park at around 1:43 p.m. for the report of criminal damage to property. The complainants stated they observed a silver Jeep Wrangler driving in the grass just south of the west parking lot and advised the officer of the vehicle’s location. West at around 2:01 a.m.

March 15 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop

March 14 Jasemine Payton, 29, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, no valid driver’s license and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near Huntington and Poplar at around 10:12 p.m.

March 12 Kristen Eder, 39, of Oak Brook, was charged with DUI, endangering the life of a child and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk near Addison and Second at around 6:17 p.m.

Brandon L. Morgan, 34, of Glen Ellyn, was charged with DUI-drugs, possession of a hypodermic syringe, obstructing identification and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident near Roosevelt and Butterfield at around 10:267 a.m. Police said Morgan also had three valid warrants from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia March 18 According to police, an Elmhurst College officer related that she responded to the report of an odor of cannabis and observed several bottles of alcohol within a dorm room. Jasmin Rivera, 19, of Round Lake Beach, admitted to purchasing the cannabis and relinquished cannabis cigarillos and two small baggies of cannabis, according to police. Police said Anastasia Koufa, 19, of Elmhurst, admitted the alcohol belonged to her. Police said Koufa and Rivera denied drinking any alcohol and did not have the odor of alcohol on their breath, but Leila H. Michalski, 18, of New Lenox, showed signs of alcohol consumption and had the odor of alcohol on her breath. Rivera was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, Koufa was cited for possession of alcohol by a minor and Michalski was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor.

March 17 Nicholas Serrano, 28, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful possession of adult use cannabis in a vehicle, driving while license suspended, expired registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and York at around 1:04 p.m.

The complainant stated he was informed of a suspicious vehicle parked behind their lot that may have been involved in a previous motor vehicle parts theft. The vehicle is described as a 2002 gray Ford Explorer. An investigation is pending.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery March 18 Forgery was reported at a restaurant in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 1:53 p.m.

A victim told police that two suspects entered the business and ordered food. Each paid for their respective orders using a $20 bill. It was determined that the first suspect—described as a black male, between 25 and 30 years old, five feet seven with an average build, short black hair and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a black T-shirt, black pants, black boots and black latex gloves—paid for his order with a counterfeit $20 bill. Both suspects left the store northbound on foot. The area was checked with no results. The second suspect was described as a black male, between 25 and 30 years old, five foot 10 with an average build, short black hair, a black puffy jacket with a white logo on the left chest quadrant, black pants and tan boots.

March 17 Attempted forgery was reported at a food store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 4:29 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect attempted to purchase several products using a counterfeit $100 bill. The cashier confronted the suspect who then left the store in an unknown direction. The suspect is described as a black male, between 30 and 35 years old, around five feet four, 130-135 pounds, with a tattoo on the left side of his neck, and was wearing a surgical mask.

March 16 Joseph A. Whealan, 26, of Villa Park, was charged with felony retail theft in the 100 block of W. First at around 10:14 a.m. Police said a reporting officer responded to the above location for a report of a man sleeping on the floor of the train station. Upon further investigation, police said it was discovered that Whealan had stolen a bottle of vodka from a food store.

March 15 Identity theft was reported in the 900 block of S. Mitchell at around 2:55 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect ordered three Apple iPads and had them delivered to her residence using her personal information.

The victim contacted Verizon and they advised they would remove the iPads from the account. The iPads were placed into evidence to be returned to Verizon.

March 14 Police said that subsequent to the report of a retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S.

Route 83 at around 1:03 p.m., a suspect had taken merchandise and left the store without paying. The reporting officer met with loss prevention who stated they did not wish to sign complaints. The suspect was released on scene and advised she was not allowed back on the property.

Theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 5:51 p.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who stated she was missing her purse while shopping at the store. The reporting officer reviewed security footage which shows the victim enter with the purse in her cart. The reporting officer and store management tried to search the store for the purse but came up with no results. She believes an unknown suspect(s) may have taken it while she was not looking.

March 13 Fraud was reported in the 400 block of W. Commonwealth at around 12:26 p.m. A victim told police that she posted a dining room set for sale on Craigslist and received emails from the suspect(s) stating a cashier’s check will be sent for payment. The victim received the cashier’s check and brought it to her bank where it was determined to be fraudulent. The reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect with no results. The reporting officer collected the fraudulent check and placed it into evidence.

Theft was reported at the Elmhurst YMCA at around 8:33 p.m. The victims told police that they left their belongings in the gym while they played basketball. After the game ended, one victim’s cell phone was missing from his backpack and another victim’s wallet was missing from his jacket pocket. The cell phone pinged to an area in Arlington Heights and the wallet was located in the YMCA’s women’s restroom. An investigation is pending.

Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of N. Emory at around 2:01 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) deposited a check into his bank account. The unknown suspect(s) immediately withdrew cash from the account. Another attempt was made to deposit a check but was unsuccessful due to a fraud alert placed on the account. The victim notified the bank and the checking account was closed.

March 12 Theft was reported at Elmhurst College at around 4:15 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed his Apple MacBook Pro from his apartment. The victim is unsure if the apartment door was locked overnight. The laptop was entered into LEADS as stolen.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported at a fitness center in the 600 block of N. York at around 7:17 p.m. A victim told police that while at the center, an unknown suspect(s) shattered the driver’s side window of her blue Honda CRV and removed her gray purse.

March 4 Helen Vitogiannis, 49, of Elmhurst, was charged with theft of mislaid property at a swim school in the 600 block of N. Michigan at around 2:54 p.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who stated her daughter’s cellphone was stolen at the above location, according to police. Police said a reporting officer reviewed video surveillance at the business and obtained Vitogiannis’ information. The reporting officer made contact with Vitogiannis and recovered the cellphone, according to police.

Governor Pritzker has issued an official Executive Order that mandates the closure of on-premise dining in Illinois restaurants through March 30. The following Elmhurst establishments have confirmed with the City that they plan to modify their business plan for the next few weeks

Park District offers information on refunds, credits

Due to the recent facility closures the Elmhurst Park District is informing the public of its current plans regarding refunds and credits: • Memberships: Courts Plus members who have paid in full will have their membership extended for the length of the closure. For example; if we are closed for three weeks, you will have a three- week extension on your membership. Members who are on installment billing will not be charged during the closure. Accounts will be adjusted accordingly when facilities reopen and billing resumes.

• Rentals and Parties: We are currently working with rentals through

May 15. If your party has been scheduled during this time we will be happy to refund or reschedule your event without a cancellation or rescheduling fee.

• Rec Station, Sunbeams & Rainbows, and other programs with automatic billing will NOT be charged or billed during the closure. All automatic billings and payments are suspended until we reopen.

• All paid events that were scheduled to take place during the closure will be refunded automatically at this time. You do not need to request a refund.

• Currently, all programs are on

hold. We are working on plans to reschedule or cancel, and we will process credits and refunds when facilities reopen.

out, pickup or curbside service since they’re not being allowed to have regular dine-in customers. But I have to say I didn’t like what I observed.

A case in point that figuratively hit me right between the eyes is when I dropped off some copies of the Independent at a local restaurant which is one of my regular stops. I don’t know the name of the woman; it appears as if she either manages or owns the restaurant (I’m guessing both), but she recognizes me when I stop in and we say hello to each other.

Last week, I walked in, and saw her sitting at one of the empty tables usually populated with dine-in customers, reading what looked to be a newspaper.

I asked her how things were going.

“Terrible,” she replied sadly.

Then, to my surprise, she suggested that if the status quo continues, they may have to go out of business.

I told her I would pray and hope for the best for her.

And I did. I’m praying for all of Elmhurst’s businesses—especially for restaurants that are getting hammered.

I’m sure the woman to whom I’m referring isn’t the only restaurant owner who’s struggling with this decision.

I also pray that you—yes, you at home—will pick up the phone and order something from your favorite restaurant. Overwhelm them, in fact, with pickup orders.

Then, get in your vehicle—or if you don’t want to go out, have a loved one or a friend make the drive—and pick up that order.

If none of the above is an option, contact Grubhub, DoorDash or UberEats. They will pick up your order from the restaurant and deliver it to you.

I ordered a medium thin-crust pizza from that restaurant last week (it was delicious, by the way). Every week, I also put in a call-in order for “the hamburger special” to a restaurant

on the south side of Elmhurst better known for its hot dogs. I’ll continue to do so.

I certainly understand that we’re all anxious and afraid. I have wrestled with those feelings on daily basis the past two weeks.

That being said, I also recall hearing a message in church years ago that comes to mind when I’ve had my bouts with anxiety, worry and fear (and there have been plenty, believe me): The pastor said, “There are 365 fear-nots in the Bible—one for every day of the year.”

Not trying to be preachy or religious or anything like that, nor am I enrolling in the seminary. (I’d be expelled from the seminary on Day 1, given the expletives I use when some doofus cuts me off in traffic.)

Just thought I’d share this with you. Fear not. Easier said than done, I know, especially when one is bludgeoned day in and day out with 24/7 media (and social media) reports of how many have tested positive for the coronavirus since yesterday, how many have died, how far the stock market has plunged, etc.

Journalists are conditioned to be skeptical. I fit the bill. I looked up whether or not there really are 365 fear-nots in the Bible. Some contend there’s more than 365; others say fewer.

Whatever the actual number happens to be, I ask that you please consider putting one of those 365-ormore (or less) fear-nots into action tonight, tomorrow, the next day or as soon as possible.

There’s a list of Elmhurst restaurants on page 7 that provide carry-out, pickup or curbside service.

Go through that list, pick out your favorite restaurant (or two or three), and for heaven’s sake—and the sake of that restaurant—fear not … to make that call.

York grad competes at U.S. Olympics Marathon trials in Atlanta Shari Lund Eberhard cross country career at York leads to lifetime appreciation

It often takes an avid runner to call running a marathon a “fun day.” But that’s exactly how York High School class of 2012 graduate Shari Lund Eberhard describes it. The real fun happened recently when Eberhard competed in Atlanta for a spot on the U.S. Olympic women’s marathon team on Saturday, Feb. 29.

Eberhard ran varsity cross-country at York, qualified for state and was an all-conference selection all four years.

“I was just lucky to be able to run fast,” said Eberhard, who started running in sixth grade at Bryan Junior High School to “get fit” for soccer. “Running was a way to stay in shape…I didn’t love it at first, but I was good at it. Then you kinda start to love it.”

Eberhard’s love of running led her to compete as a walk-on to Purdue University’s cross-country team, where she said her highlights included appearances in Big Ten Championships. But those highlights sometimes came at a cost she doesn’t

experience in her post-collegiate running career.

“I ran through stress fractures and shin splints [at Purdue],” she said.

“There is a lot of pressure in college to get back fast. Now I can control my training. Staying healthy is half the battle.

“I had simple goals after college.

I wanted to run the Chicago Marathon and hopefully qualify for Boston [Marathon]. I grew up going to and helping at the Chicago Marathon with my York team, and I wanted to experience running it. And everyone knows Boston [Marathon]…I would have never thought 10 years ago that I’d be running in the Olympic trials.”

Eberhard first ran the Chicago Marathon in 2016 and quickly met her goal of qualifying for Boston.

But before she ran Boston in 2018, she ran her second Chicago Marathon in 2017 and finished with a time of 2:55, which was 10 minutes off the Olympic trials qualifying time.

Now, a seed was planted and her simple goal just stepped up.

“When I ran Chicago for the first time, I ran it super conservative,” she said. “It was so fun, and I knew I had energy left to run faster … and accomplish more.”

On April 16, 2018, Eberhard met

her “simple goal,” and ran the Boston Marathon, but things weren’t as fun on this day.

“Boston Marathon had the worst weather in years,” Eberhard vividly remembered. “It was cold and rainy…and just miserable. I was so cold that I felt like crying.”

Not having the experience she hoped for, Eberhard had to run Boston again, so she did the following year. Though she did not qualify for the Olympic trials, she did set a personal record, which was very encouraging. That encouragement took her back to the Chicago Marathon in October of 2019.

With favorable temperatures at the 2019 Chicago Marathon, the 26-year-old Eberhard took off with the Olympic trial qualifying time of 2 hours and 45 minutes on her mind.

“When I crossed the finish line and saw my time of 2:43, I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I’ve worked so hard and to have that dream come to fruition is pretty incredible. Running in the Olympic trials exceeded my expectations. My race itself was average.”

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on March 17 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. Board member Christopher Kocinski was absent from the meeting. Board members Margaret Harrell and Courtenae Trautmann participated in the meeting via telephone.

In an effort to adhere to social distancing, the board members and District 205 staff members who attended the meeting did not sit in adjoining seats.

There were no public comments.

York principal hired to begin July 1 Board members voted unanimously to approve the hiring of Shahe Bagdasarian as the principal of York High School, with a start date of July 1, 2020, and an annual base salary of nearly $183,000. District 205 Superintendent David Moyer noted that the district had completed its search process for a new principal during the previous week. Moyer said there were 38 applicants for the position, and that the district brought five sitting principals in for the first round of interviews.

“Hiring Shahe Bagdasarian is a big win, a very big win, for our students, our faculty, our school district and our community,” said board member Jim Collins moments before the board voted to approve Bagdasarian as York’s principal. “I couldn’t be happier that he is going to be the new principal at York High School.”

In May, Bagdasarian will receive

his doctorate degree in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Full story about Bagdasarian can be found on page 4 in this issue of the Elmhurst Independent.

Erin DeLuga, York’s current principal, is leaving to become the principal of Lake Zurich High School.

Purchase approved of Chromebooks for sale to freshmen, transfers Board members voted unanimously to approve the purchase of 810 Lenovo 500e Chromebooks for sale to York High freshmen and transfer students for the 2020-21 school year. The purchase, which includes management licenses and warranty coverage, is not to exceed $270,000.

Chromebooks for York students are purchased and sold at cost to new students at York. Each Chomebook costs about $280. Assuming the current 19 percent fee waiver at York, the sale of Chromebooks is expected to result in revenues of about $185,000.

Various gifts, donations approved The board approved a gift of $7,500 from the District 205 Foundation to support the costs associated with providing financial aid to students in need who want to attend York High School’s prom and postprom activities. The board also approved a donation of $5,000 from the Elmhurst Eagles youth football program. The donation will be used to purchase a new scoreboard for York’s stadium. The current scoreboard at the stadium was purchased in 2006.

Additionally, the board approved $13,000 in funding from the Bryan Middle School PTA, earmarked for flexible classroom furniture that will be used in the school’s library.

The board will hold its next regular meeting on April 14.

“But I had to really step back and be thankful that I was there, and that so many people were there to support me and watch me finish.”

No one more than Eberhard’s mom, Elmhurst resident Candy Lund, knows how hard her daughter has worked.

“She is one of those miracle runners, never in the limelight,” said Lund. “But her spirit and drive has catapulted her into this amazing opportunity.”

Eberhard completed her graduate degree at North Carolina State and is now a resident of North Carolina, but says she still loves the Midwest, specifically Elmhurst.

“I love Elmhurst and the running culture. It started my career.”

EAM Teen Council takes on project ‘Par Excellence’ On Thursday, March 12, the Teen Council of the Elmhurst Art Museum gathered at DIT Workshops, the studio of owner Adrian Orocco, who offered his facility for the young people to construct mini-golf holes for the upcoming Par Excellence Redux exhibition, coming soon to the museum.

If you don’t need to go out, don’t. Work from home and keep your children active but maintain social distance. We appreciate the support of our mayors and the governor, who have taken action to ensure social distancing.

4 Don’t use medical supplies unnecessarily or stockpile essential medical supplies. Things like masks and hand sanitizer are important to healthcare professionals who are caring for COVID-19 patients. Instead, follow the recommendations the CDC offers on its website to protect yourself from coronavirus.

4 Donate blood. Now that everyone is staying home, the number of blood donors has dropped. It may sound counterintuitive to go out to a blood drive, but we are encouraging healthy donors to give blood. Red Cross has put new safety measures in place to protect staff and donors, including checking the temperature of staff and donors before they enter a drive location, providing hand sanitizer throughout the donation process and spacing beds in accordance with social distancing guidelines. More attention is also being given to disinfecting surfaces and equipment. Versiti.org lists donation locations on its web page.

4 Wash your hands often with soap and water, don’t touch your face, and avoid contact with sick people.

York baseball team loaded with potential Coach Kalal excited, in particular, about pitching staff prospects

Yes, the York baseball team graduated more than 10 seniors off a 2019 team that won 22 games and finished second in the always tough West Suburban Conference Silver Division with a 13-5 mark (and could have tied league champ Lyons Township with a win in the last Silver game of the season).

But longtime Dukes coach Dave Kalal isn’t worried about optics. He’s excited about the 26-player group he will roll out once the all clear is given related to the current COVID-19 outbreak.

“This year brings all types of new challenges,” he said. “We graduated, I think, 13 seniors last year and most of them played. But looking at this year’s lineup, we’re a little unproven.

We have kids who can play, but as far as competing at that varsity level, we have to see how they handle the speed of the game and the intensity of the game.”

York’s roster of 26 features 10 seniors, 15 juniors and a sophomore.

Kalal said one particular point of excitement for him is the Dukes’ pitching staff.

“One strong point I know we will be good at is we have some pretty decent arms,” he said. “We have 38 pitching appearances coming back from last season. For more of those kids, those were relief appearances.

There are not a lot of innings in those 38, but we have four or five pitchers from last year who were involved in games and that’s a good thing. We also have two, three or four good junior arms that will complement the

Returning on the mound for York are seniors Jon Meyers (will continue his career at Concordia), Tyler Lawrence (headed to Rockhurst College in Kansas City), Santino Domingo (Trinity Christian) and Kai Formella. New junior arms for the Dukes include Charlie Cmiel, Justin Meyers and Tyler Procaijlo.

“We’ll have a couple other guys contribute,” Kalal said. “Everybody has to contribute. My message is everybody has to pull on the same end of the rope. If everybody does that, we will have a good season.”

Kalal was encouraged by what he saw the first two weeks of practice prior to the statewide shutdown. “I like the work the kids did the first two weeks,” he said. “We went outside four or five times the first two weeks, which is completely out of the norm for that. I was excited to put the uniform on and keep score and then everything came to a screeching halt.”

Kalal pointed out he again has a roster loaded with multi-sport athletes. “I like the makeup of this team,” he said. “We have a lot of two-sport athletes again. We have been very fortunate over the years to have kids playing multiple sports.

It’s so important because it keeps kids competing in entire seasons and they are put in pressure situations in these other sports. Last year and the previous years, more than half the roster has been multi-sport athletes.”

This year’s York team also is gifted from a strength and conditioning standpoint, Kalal noted. “Our kids have been getting in the weight room,” he said. “Our kids are doing a great job with that and doing PE strength training or power club before school. They are working out.

By far, this is my most physically imposing team. I feel like they have this little bit of edge to them and a confidence to them I think that you get from being in the weight room.

Watching kids throw and swing, I like our skill set and talent level. We know it’s an unproven group, but it

will be fun if we are allowed to get after it. I want to see this season unfold and see who produces.”

Other key contributors will include sophomore Ethan Cancel, a left-handed-hitting first baseman, junior Tyler Arista (catcher, outfield), senior Tyler Cwik (outfield), senior Anthony Abbatecola (outfield), senior Jacob Caffery (outfield), along with junior Matt Pinkowski (outfield), junior Patrick Kastner (infield) and junior Charlie Bodach (catcher).

Kalal noted Cwik, Abbatecola and Caffery saw time on the varsity as juniors. The coach also has been impressed with Pinkowski’s work ethic and attitude.

“All these guys are multi-sport athletes,” Kalal said. “This junior class as sophomores won the conference.

We’re looking to kind of feed off that success they had and the success the seniors had as juniors last year and hopefully put together another successful season.”

When the season resumes, Kalal sees another competitive WSC Silver race. “To be honest, it’s LT and Oak Park, and Downers Grove North and Hinsdale Central will be better this year,” he said. “LT and Oak Park with their history they have in our conference, it’s hard to say they aren’t the teams to beat. It’s theirs until someone knocks them off the chair.

I like our chances with our young guys. Maybe other coaches think York graduated everybody and they have nothing coming back? I think we will sneak up on people. We’re delivering the same message level to level. We want to give them a great experience playing baseball here at York and teach them some life lessons along the way as well.”

Over the last few years, a scan of a York girls basketball box score generally involved some derivative of the above entry.

Schwartz’s eye for the long ball culminated this season in her participating in the Class 4A state 3-point shooting finals in Normal at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena.

Schwartz missed the cut-off by one 3-pointer to advance to a shootout that would determine who advanced to the next round in Normal.

“It was really fun,” Schwartz said of the Redbird Arena experience. “I got to go down there with my teammates. Almost everybody from the team went with. I was happy about that. It was good for the juniors to see this for next year. It’s where I think they have the ability to get to. There were a lot of girls shooting down there. It was interesting. It was really fun. There was music. It was a good experience, overall.”

What about nerves shooting in a college basketball-type environment? “I am usually not nervous until I actually go on the court,” she said.

“When I was younger, I really wanted to be a doctor,” she added, “but I do not do well with blood. Going into the engineering range is maybe better for me.”

With the ink barely dry on this past York season, Schwartz took time to reflect on what meant the most to her.

“Winning a conference title was a good way to end things. That was one of our big goals,” she said. “Honestly, what I loved more than anything was the family I got to build with my teammates and coaches. I love those girls with my entire heart. We just had a team party and were hanging out.

They will always be my best friends.

That is the most amazing experience and takeaway I could have gotten from the sport.”

Elmhurst AAUW seeks scholarship applicants The AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch is offering two scholarships of $2,500 each to women from the communities of Elmhurst, Addison, Bensenville, Berkeley, Northlake, Oak Brook, or Villa Park who need financial assistance to continue education at the undergraduate or graduate level.

An applicant may be studying full or part time. Besides being from

one of the above communities, the applicant must be continuing her education after completing at least 12 credit hours at an accredited college or university and be age 25 or older.

The AAUW mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research at both the national and local levels. Funds for these scholarships come from the Used Book

Sale that AAUW hosts each summer. The 2019 Used Book Sale was so successful that the organization is pleased to be able to offer 2 scholarships once again this year.

Chamber shares IDCEO, SBA information The Governmental Affairs Committee of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry, in cooperation with the City of Elmhurst, is forwarding information on the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s (IDCEO) efforts to secure federal relief for Illinois businesses impacted by Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic.

First, IDCEO needs to collect information from our small business owners and not-for-profit managers on COVID-19’s economic impact on your businesses and organizations.

Second, IDCEO must submit that information to the Governor Office in order for the State of Illinois to apply with the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) for an economic injury disaster declaration. Following such SBA declaration, IDCEO’S Regional Economic Team can walk businesses through the application process to receive a low interest loan.

The SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program provides small businesses with working capital loans of up to $2 million to overcome the temporary loss of revenue.

To assist IDCEO and the SBA, small businesses and not-for-profits impacted by the Pandemic are encouraged to complete the COVID-19 Impact form. Filling out the form does NOT constitute application or request for an SBA loan. Your participation will provide an assessment of need for businesses.

After an SBA declaration is made for designated areas within Illinois, information on the application process for Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance will be made available to all affected communities, businesses and not-for-profits.
