Caforio addresses curriculum, instruction questions Reads statement prior to D205 public forum

Five people spoke during the public-participation segment of the Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board meeting on Tuesday, March 15.

Just prior to that segment, District 205 Board President Kara Caforio read a statement. The district provided a copy of that statement to the Elmhurst Independent: “Since last July, questions have been raised by members in our community regarding curriculum and instruction in D205. And while there is much to read about online in other districts - the most important work for us as a community is what is happening here in Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205.

At its regular meeting on Monday, March 21, the Elmhurst City Council voted to approve another season of al fresco dining in downtown Elmhurst, but restaurants will now be expected to contribute toward the City’s administration of the program primarily in the form of assisting with the cost of clean-up.

Alderman Mark Mulliner (7th Ward) led off the conversation about expanded dining in downtown, noting that it really helped the restaurants during the COVID pandemic— and “it is nice to be able to maximize the downtown in this way.” He urged other aldermen to support the measure.

Ald. Dannee Polomsky (3rd Ward) suggested adding a fee.

“I do support it, but what I would like to do is note that typically when we have permit fees [it is] an effort to cover the administration costs,” she said. “I don’t think it is feasible to look at the pure administrative costs, but it is reasonable and appropriate to set up a fee for these costs. When the City set up barriers, there were

105 of them used in 2020 and the cost was $26,315 which was covered

by COVID relief funds.

“What we’re looking at is additional cleaning. It is my understanding that it takes $70,000 for power washing requiring 17 nights worked by staff.

“I would like to propose a fee which has been discussed of $500 per [parking] spot. While it won’t cover all the costs, it will be at least an effort to cover them.”

Polomsky then proposed an amendment to the report to add a $500 fee per space.

“I support the amendment,” said Ald. Emily Bastedo (Ward 6). “The restaurants have shown their willingness to invest more. The cleaning that takes place covers all the sidewalks. I don’t think they should have to cover the full cost because they are public sidewalks, but outdoor dining does bring more tax dollars to the downtown, so I believe it is appropriate. And I think the restaurants have expressed they are willing to do so.”

Mulliner disagreed.

“I don’t support the $500 fee,” he said. “There were 19 restaurants that had outdoor dining last year and eight of them had parklets that picked up the significant cost. If it were me, a $200 fee would be more reasonable. There is about a $4,000 cost to install and take down the barriers. If we base it on the cleaning, it

involves all restaurants.”

“I don’t think a $500 fee is unreasonable,” said Alderman Marti Deuter (1st Ward). “Think about the use of City resources for outdoor dining.

We already support businesses with sales tax incentives and TIF relief.

I think we should look at a fee for outdoor dining, but we should do a more in-depth analysis for fees in the future.

“I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for $500 and it is easily justified.”

“The way I look at this, there is an opportunity cost to it as well,” said Ald. Mike Brennan (7th Ward). “We are using 16 spaces that residents use to park. I think the $500 fee in order to take ownership of that spot seems reasonable. We don’t want a dirty downtown so whatever the City does today is appropriate; cleaning is cleaning, in my opinion. But they are taking up City property.”

The amendment was approved 12-1 with 1 absent. The ‘nay’ vote came from Mulliner, who added that he did support downtown dining.

“I don’t support the amendment; I will support the report,” he said.

“People on the trains riding by wonder what’s going on in Elmhurst. It’s a very positive thing for the downtown.”

The report as amended was approved by a vote of 13-1 with one absent. (Ald. Noel Talluto (4th Ward)

was absent from the meeting.)

City Council capsules …

• The City received the Government Finance Officer Association Certificate of Achievement Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the current fiscal year for the 32nd year in a row.

• Congratulations to the Elmhurst University men’s basketball team in its run up to the Division III National Championship game. The team defeated five teams, including one by a score of 98-60, to reach the national championships. The team finished runner-up in Division III. • The Citizen’s Public Works Academy has been developed. It is a six-week program designed to give citizens a working knowledge of the public works division. It includes indepth overviews using interactive, hands-on activities, tours of the facilities and meetings with public works staff. It is limited to 25 students per session. The deadline to register is April 8 for the first class. Find out more at the web site, elmhurst.org. It is for adults aged 18 and older.

Dukes JV Hockey makes history

The York Dukes JV Hockey Team played in the Illinois State Championship Black Hawk Cup final game losing a close game to Glenbrook North 2-0 at a packed Edge Ice Arena on Sunday, March 13. The JV team progressed to the final by beating St. Ignatius JV 1-0 in the quarter-finals and New Trier JV 3-2 in overtime in the semi-finals. The Dukes had a great season coming in 2nd place in the competitive Illinois Scholastic Hockey League. The JV team also won the prestigious 50th Annual Loyola Academy Jack O’Grady Thanksgiving Tournament. The York JV Team was the first team in York Hockey Club history to make it to the finals in the Illinois State Championship Black Hawk Cup tournament. Elmhurst Art Museum receives $750,000 grant from state Award brings museum halfway to renovation fundraising goal “Rebuilding Illinois means investing in all types of infrastructure that improve communities and the quality of life for local residents… investment in the museums protect our cultural heritage and offer unique programs and events for visitors to enjoy.”

Those were the words of Gov. J.B. Pritzker in an announcement of the recipients of state capital investment grants.

The Elmhurst Art Museum was awarded the maximum grant award of $750,000 from Gov. Pritzker’s Illinois Public Museum Capital Program, which represents half the funds needed to complete the museum’s upcoming HVAC and roofing renovations.

The Elmhurst Art Museum was one of thirty-six Illinois museums to receive state capital investments to

improve their facilities and develop new exhibits. The investments are made possible through the Illinois Public Museum Capital Grants Program, funded by the governor’s bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program, the first in nearly a decade.

This significant grant comes on the occasion of the museum’s 25th anniversary to support an important next phase of the museum’s renovations, following McCormick House restorations and recent improvements to its galleries and Education Center.

This phase will address HVAC and roofing updates for the main building. Current HVAC and roofing systems are beyond equipment life expectancies and need replacement in order to meet climate control industry standards. Completion of this facility need will provide a sustainable environment for patrons, exhibitions, and collections storage. The building improvements will allow the Museum to continue to deliver humanities and arts programming to our growing audience and community well into our next 25 years.

ucation, and architecture. Throughout its 25th year of serving the public, the Museum will complete HVAC and roofing renovations, co-organize the popular arts festival Art in Wilder

Harassment, threats March 16 A reporting officer met with a complainant in the 700 block of S. Spring who reported receiving threatening text messages from her ex-boyfriend. The reporting officer made contact with the suspect and advised him to cease communication with the complainant.

Battery March 16 Benjamin S. Fett, 20, and Richard A. Wilbert, 18, both of Elmhurst, were issued citations for battery in the 500 block of Fay at 3:45 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a loud noise complaint, a victim reported he was battered by the suspects following a verbal argument.

March 13 Subsequent to a call for suspects in a vehicle that were shooting projectiles at random people near Addison and First at 6:09 p.m., the offending vehicle was located and subsequently stopped. Officers located a Splatter Ball gun inside the vehicle. All five juvenile suspects were taken into custody and transported to the police station. The juvenile suspects were released to the custody of their parents. Juvenile charges to be filed in DuPage County.

March 12 Police said officers responded to a restaurant in the 100 block of S. Route 83 at 8:28 p.m. for a report a battery. Upon arrival, a victim related the suspect was just terminated from the restaurant. After leaving the restaurant, the suspect returned, went back into the kitchen area and pushed the victim into a wall.

The suspect was issued a no-trespass notice.

March 10 Colette M. Keri, 25, of Chicago, was charged with two counts of battery, obstructing identification and given a no-trespass notice in the 600 block of N. Michigan at 10:21 a.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the victim who reported Keri pulled her hair out of her head and sprayed her with pepper spray. According to police, Keri was taken into custody and provided a false name and date of birth.

James Ziesk, 31, of Elmhurst, was charged with battery and resisting a police officer in the 500 block of W. Grand at 4:22 a.m. Police said a reporting officer made contact with Ziesk, who became agitated and bumped a responding officer in the chest.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass March 16 A victim in the 300 block of W. Grand told police that the suspect came to the dealership and got into an argument with her ex-boyfriend who works there. The suspect was previously issued a no-trespass notice for that location.

The suspect was contacted and was scheduled to go to the police department March 17 to be issued a citation for trespassing.

March 12 While on patrol in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at 12:07 p.m., a reporting officer observed the victim’s vehicle with a broken passenger side window. The officer discovered evidence of vandalism at the scene. The owner and operator were contacted. The operator responded to the scene. Nothing appears to be missing from the vehicle.

Feb. 23-March 3 A victim reports an unknown suspect keyed the passenger side of his vehicle while it was

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance March 16 Police said officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at 4:36 a.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported the suspect was acting irrationally. The suspect pushed the complainant to the ground following a verbal altercation. Medics arrived on scene and transported the victim to Elmhurst Hospital for an evaluation.

March 15 A reporting officer met with the victim in the 100 block of E. Lake at 8:23 p.m. who reported an unknown suspect was watching her through her bedroom window. The suspect was last seen running away eastbound from the apartment complex. Officers checked the area but were met with no results.

DUI, DUI-drugs, transportation of open alcohol, possession of open alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor March 12 Monica Zavala, 25, of Montgomery, was charged with DUI and being improperly stopped on the roadway subsequent to a traffic stop near Kenilworth and North at 3:14 a.m.

Police said Rafaeliel Hernandez, 25, of Montgomery, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to have a valid warrant out of Bridgeview.

March 11 Police said officers responded to the 200 block of S. Boyd at 9:27 p.m. for a report of a loud explosion. Upon arrival, it was learned that the loud explosion was from a firework set off by a group of juveniles. One of the juvenile suspects was found to be in possession of alcohol, tobacco and fireworks. The suspect was cited for possession of tobacco by a minor, possession of fireworks by a minor, possession of alcohol by a minor, and released to the custody of his parents.

Fleeing, eluding

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported no incidents of fleeing and eluding in which drivers of a vehicle reportedly

Possession of a controlled substance March 13 Anthony Knight, 47, of Berkeley, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and criminal trespass to real property in the 100 block of Fairlane at 7:06 p.m.

March 12 Police said that subsequent to a suspicious person call near Schiller and Pine at 10:21 p.m., a suspect was found to be in possession of heroin. The suspect was placed into custody and transported to the police station. Upon arrival at the station, the suspect was having a hard time answering questions. Medics arrived on scene and transported the suspect to the hospital for treatment. Charges are pending.

Police said that subsequent to the investigation of a suspicious auto in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at 11:14 p.m., cocaine residue was recovered from a vehicle. Contraband was seized; no arrests were made.

Possession of cannabis in a vehicle

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported three incidents of unlawful possession of cannabis in a vehicle by a driver or a passenger: Kason Sunilligan, 20, of Bellwood and David Gatson, 20, of Chicago, near Route 83 and North at noon; Jeanette Trujillo, 19, of Chicago, near the Illinois Prairie Path and Spring at 1:57 a.m.; Ovidio Garcia-Juarez, 26, of Bensenville near York and Industrial at 4:29 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances March 15 A victim stated at 1:29 p.m. he sent nude photos to an unknown female on the social media app WINK. The unknown suspect then asked for money or the photos would be sent to his followers and friends. The victim sent money to the unknown suspect.

March 14 Police said that subsequent to an ISPERN message for a fleeing and eluding out of Broadview near Roosevelt and York at 12:14 a.m., officers located the offending vehicle going eastbound on Brush Hill. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the offending vehicle.

The suspect stopped for officers before exiting the vehicle and fleeing on foot. Officers were able to apprehend the suspect and take him into custody. Two firearms were later located on the suspect. The suspect and both firearms were released to the custody of the Broadview Police Department.

March 10 A reporting officer responded to a report in the 800 block of S. Riverside at 2:42 p.m. of a safe lying in Salt Creek. The safe was recovered and had been cut open. Google maps shows the safe in the creek in September of 2021.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/ robbery

March 15 Retail theft was reported at a gas station in the 600 block of W. North at 4:33 a.m. A complainant related the suspect stole a carton of Newport cigarettes. The suspect fled the store on foot; officers checked the area with no results.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 900 block of S. York at 6:20 p.m. A victim reports an unknown suspect entered his unlocked vehicle while it was parked at the above location.

The unknown suspect broke the ignition rendering the truck undriveable.

Theft of services was reported in the 500 block of S. York at 7 p.m. A reporting officer met with the complainant who reported the suspect left the restaurant without providing valid payment for his meal. This case is pending investigation.

March 13 Police said that an ATM service technician in the 100 block of W. North reported finding an electronic skimming device attached to the side of the ATM machine inside a pharmacy. The technician removed the device, shut down the machine, and contacted police. The skimmer used radio frequency to collect data on an SD card. The skimmer was placed into evidence.

The suspect then asked the victim to purchase Google Play gift cards and supply the card information to the suspect. The victim purchased the gift cards and emailed the information to the suspect. When the suspect requested additional funds the victim became suspicious and ceased communication.

As part of its strategic planning process launched this month, Elmhurst School District 205 is conducting a district-wide survey from now until April 1. The survey is open to employees, parents, students, and all community members, including those without students in the District.

“Effective education of students requires a commitment from our entire community, and we are excited about this inclusive strategic planning process that gives all our stakeholders an opportunity to participate,” said Dr. Keisha Campbell, Superintendent. “I highly encourage our community to take advantage of this opportunity to inform the future direction of our schools.”

The world of Wordle

There’s a new game sweeping the Internet. It’s called Wordle and the premise is pretty simple. You get six chances to correctly guess, ascertain and or sleuth out a random, fiveletter word. With each guess you are told which letters are in the word, which are not and which are in the right space within the word.

If you correctly guess the word in four guesses or less you earn bragging rights on various social media platforms. Any game that sets up bragging rights on social media is destined for stardom. In that regard, Wordle is already a celebrity.

There are a couple of magical things about Wordle. First, it spans generations. My son introduced me to the game; and I know friends who compete in family challenges with their 90-something grandmothers as well as their 10-year-old fifth graders. There aren’t too many activities that can appeal to boomers, the X, Y and Zers and those who’ve lived through realities like the Great Depression and WWII. Wordle does just that.

Second, you can only play one word each day. You can’t get consumed by it and spend hours on word after word after word. It’s a one and done. You do the Wordle and wait until tomorrow for a new word to become Wordle-able.

Well, unless you are an addicted fanatic, and find the Wordle archive online. Then you’ll have access to all 200-plus Wordle words. It could keep you busy for days—not that I’d know from personal experience.

Wordle may be based on a simple premise, but the way one approaches the game varies from person to person. This reveals a good deal about us as individuals.

There’s been much speculation about how to select the first word for your daily guess. There are two distinct groups of Wordlers in this regard. The first are the foot loose and fancy free. They choose a word based on a feeling or a sign or maybe a dream they had the night before. Every day it’s a different word, because playing any other way would be boring.

Then there is the other group, to which I belong. I call us the rigid Wordlers because we have standard words to start our journey each day. Within my first two words, the goal is to use all five vowels along with a handful of the most popular

consonants. Lately, my first word is “autos.” For the longest time, my second word was “brine,” but a couple of weeks ago I changed that to “diner” because I thought having the “er” at the end might be advantageous.

Within a week of that change, the Wordle for the day was (wait for it…) brine. Exclamation point. So much for the “er” on the end being advantageous. Suffice to say I didn’t do any bragging on social media that day.

Once I start a game, I finish it within minutes. One of my sons will take a guess or two and then ponder it for an hour or more while he goes about the rest of his day. There are as many techniques to Wordle as there are five-letter words in the English language – and that’s a lot.

Some days, the word is tougher than others. This happens (in my opinion) when one letter is used twice in the same word. For instance you know there is an S or a V or an I in your word, but you might not consider two of each of those letters. Consider “vivid,” “eases” and “shush.”

A year ago, Wordle wasn’t in my vocabulary, because it hadn’t been invented yet. Now, according to the New York Times, more than 300,000 people play it daily. I’m one of them. And other countries are jumping on the bandwagon. Canada has its own version called Canuckle.

In times that can seem scary and bleak, Wordle is a vivid bright light. It eases us toward peace, and when we solve, we shush so we don’t spoil the quest for others. It can bring about a sense of pride and unity with other Wordlers. From my perspective, there’s only one thing that could make it more perfect: If Wordle itself was a five-letter word.

But that would be asking a lot – or better put in Wordle terms – heaps, loads and scads.

Mazzochi bill to break down barriers in state licensing Legislation sponsored by State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) to make certain state-regulated career fields more accessible passed the Illinois House last week.

“Over the past several years, the General Assembly has increased the requirements and trainings, and along with it the cost, needed to obtain a professional license in many fields,” Mazzochi said.

“Some of that legislation is now having an unintended consequence: over-credentialing, which makes it more difficult for people, especially if they are trying to re-enter the workforce or are low income, to access a better job market.”

The Illinois Department of Fi-

nancial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) regulates dozens of professions ranging from not just doctors, dentists and architects, to nail salon workers and interior designers.

“For example, Illinois mandates a special license with 300 hours of training, only at certain approved schools, if they want to work in hair braiding,” she said. “While there may need to be some training for specialized issues, we also need to respect people’s real-world work experiences as well.”

House Bill 5575 will have a task force examine Illinois’ requirements for occupational licensing and identify changes that must be made to the regulations for licensed occupa-

tions to reduce the barriers to entry in these career fields.

“We want to encourage people to find meaningful work,” Mazzochi said. “We need to help people climb the ladder, not pull it up out of their reach through unnecessary regulations before they can even start a new job.”

Members of the task force will serve without compensation. House Bill 5575 passed with near unanimous support from the House and will proceed to the Senate for consideration.

While seemingly grassroots, this haranguing of teachers is inspired and guided by well-funded coordinated interests that seek to defund public schools, spread moral panic, and condition our children to be compliant acceptors of the status quo.

After the 2020 killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, many members of the public including in Elmhurst raised their

awareness of racial injustices and clamored for schools, employers, and government to address the conditions that led to these deaths. People are realizing that we need to better understand our complicated history, invest in equity, and change the systems that harm people of color.

What we are seeing now is a backlash against that awakening. Those who vote against public education funding referendums, turn a blind eye to outdated school buildings, and see no need to pay teachers commensurately with their value will point to arbitrary or imagined met-

School Board recognizes outstanding students at meeting

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday, March 15 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. Board member Christopher Kocinski was absent from the meeting.

The meeting began with public forum, however, President Kara Caforio read a statement prior to its start.

National Merit Scholarship finalists honored The board recognized the seven members of York High School’s Class of 2022 who have been named as finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The seven honored York seniors are: Andrew Brooks, Morgan Burnham, Jericho Calago, Madeleine Fine, Clark Mahoney, Ryder Maston and Jessica Morey.

Board salutes York speech team The board also recognized the York High School Speech Team, which placed 10th at the IHSA State Finals. The state event took place in Peoria on Feb. 18-19. The team won the championship at the Wheaton North Regional on Feb. 5. York then placed third at the Wheaton Warrenville South Sectional on Feb. 12.

Bowling athletes recognized The board also honored York senior Katharine Svehla, who earned All-State honors by placing fifth in the individual standings of the IHSA Girls State Bowling Meet. The state tournament took place Feb. 18-19 in Rockford. Svehla led the York team to a fifth-place finish in the state meet’s team standings. She placed third in the state meet’s individual standings with her 12-game total score of 2,587 (an average score of 215.6 per game).

Svehla is York’s first All-State athlete in bowling. York’s fifth-place finish in the team standings of this year’s state meet marked the highest state-meet finish in the history of the York girls bowling program.

Other meeting highlights: Board to modify pay categories of PSRP Board members voted unanimously to modify the pay categories of the Professional School Related Personnel Department (PSRP) unit.

Luke Pavone, the district’s assistant superintendent of human resources, noted the difficulty of attracting and retaining educational assistants, who work directly with district students and staff members. According to the district, the modified pay categories will increase the pay of the PSRP unit, allowing the district to be more competitive in the industry.

Strategic planning under way District 205 Superintendent Keisha Campbell noted during the meeting that the district has officially launched its strategic planning process. Between March 21 and April 1, the district will be soliciting input from the community. The survey is available on the district’s website at elmhurst205.org.

COVID-19 metrics update given Campbell also gave a brief update on COVID-19 metrics, stating it would be the final time the issue would be on the agenda for a board meeting. Campbell noted that lunch spacing in the district’s schools returned to regular capacities on March 7. She added that the district has not seen any outbreaks or increases in COVID-19 cases since that return to regular lunchroom capacity. None of the board members or administrators wore masks during the March 15 board meeting. The district’s administrators and some board members wore masks at the previous board meeting on Feb. 22.

The board will hold its next regular meeting on April 12.

Obituary

Phyllis H. Crosley, 93 Phyllis H. Crosley, a longtime resident of Elmhurst, passed away March 15, 2022 at the age of 93. She was born May 28, 1928, in Chicago, to the late Henry and Harriet Crosley. She graduated from York High School in Elmhurst in 1946, and from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa in 1950.

Phyllis had a 28-year career at Illinois Bell. Her conscientious dedication made her a well-respected employee who rose to become one of the first women in an executive position in their regional office.

She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Elmhurst. In addition, she enjoyed her various travels throughout the world, and she was an avid reader.

Phyllis generously donated to numerous charities and causes, particularly those supporting food insecurity

and children’s health and well-being.

Her generosity could also be seen in how she used her time, volunteering countless hours at the Elmhurst Historical Museum and at her church.

Phyllis was a dear sister to the late Joan (the late Richard) Goller and the late Marjorie (John) Herder. She was a loving, doting aunt to Wendy (Michael) McPherrin, Denise (the late Bill) Kolar, Jill (Don) DeLarco, Jeanine (David) Layland, John (Sandi) Herder, Todd (Lisa) Herder, David (Susan) Herder; 16 great nieces and nephews; 21 great-great nieces and nephews; Funeral services will be private.

DuPage Foundation president and CEO announces retirement DuPage Foundation president and CEO David M. McGowan, CFRE, recently announced his plans to retire at the end of the year after what will be 25 years of service as the Foundation’s chief staff officer.

“It’s time,” said McGowan. “It’s time for me to find other ways to have impact in our community. It’s time for a new leader who can bring new ideas to the table. I couldn’t be more proud of what our team of staff and volunteer leaders has accomplished, but I also couldn’t be more excited to see what the next leader brings to the table.”

When McGowan started as executive director in 1998, DuPage Foundation’s assets totaled nearly $4 million and its cumulative grantmaking totaled nearly $1 million. Illinois Council of Orchestras announces annual awards ESO, Alltop among recipients

The Illinois Council of Orchestras is pleased to announce the 2022 recipients of its annual awards for excellence in the field of music performance and for support of musical organizations. An awards panel of judges drawn from the Illinois Council of Orchestras Board of Directors and independent professional conductors and musicians reviewed nominations representing orchestras, youth orchestras, and chamber ensembles from throughout Illinois.

The ICO honored the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra with the Com-

munity Orchestra of the Year award.

The Elmhurst Symphony’s music director is Stephen Alltop.

In addition, Alltop was named Conductor of the Year of a professional orchestra for his work with the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, which was awarded Guild of the Year.

The Illinois Council of Orchestras was founded in 1974 with a mission: to encourage, promote, and assist orchestras throughout the State of Illinois; to promote an exchange of information among members, including providing consultants and speakers; and, to hold educational conferences for member organizations, including musicians, staff, boards, volunteers, and audiences.

York teacher seeks to honor school’s fallen veterans Plans for a permanent memorial outside York are in the works

Something in the York High School’s auditorium lobby never sat right with social studies teacher Justin Riskus. There sits a small marble plaque donated by the Class of 1985 that honors 101 alumni who gave up their lives in military conflicts. Who were these soldiers? What was their story? A ravenous investigator of history, Justin began researching the individual names of the fallen, their backstories, and the stories of their passings.

He has been working on the project for 10 years, enlisting the help of students in his Military History Club.

Students start with a date of death, research census records for a tie to Elmhurst, and look at enlistment records from the Library of Congress to piece together the stories of these fallen veterans.

“I tell my students, it’s easy to forget the kinds of sacrifices that people and families have to make in times of war,” said Riskus. “Time moves on and they get lost to history, so trying

to preserve these stories, it’s important.”

This passion to uncover these stories has resulted in a new display case on the third floor in York’s Social Studies Department where the photos and brief biographies of a sampling of York’s deceased veterans are now displayed. Riskus hopes that students and staff will pass by and learn more about York graduates who died in service to their country, many of them who were not much older than current York students are now.

The display case is the first step in a process Riskus hopes will end with a permanent monument outside York.

He hopes to start fundraising for a monument in the spring. The completed monument would also include a database and website that will feature the stories and facts Riskus and his students have researched.

Justin Riskus, a graduate of Purdue (BA) and UIC (MA), has been a member of York’s social studies department for 15 years.

Bond set at $5 million for man charged with drug induced homicide the Addison Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Blecke Avenue for a report of an unresponsive woman. Upon their arrival, officers found the victim unresponsive.

While at the residence, officers located baggies containing a white powdery substance, later identified as a fentanyl/fluorofentanyl mixture.

The victim was transported to Glen Oaks Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Through the course of their investigation, officers identified Thomas as the individual suspected of supplying the victim with the fentanyl/fluorofentanyl mixture.

It is alleged that on Nov. 17, 2021, Thomas went to the victim’s residence and sold the fentanyl/fluorofentanyl mixture to her. It is further alleged that the victim ingested the

County, DuPage Foundation launch new partnership Chairman Dan Cronin and County Board members Don Puchalski, Ashley Selmon, and Sam Tornatore presented a $10.6 million check to the DuPage Foundation at its Feb. 22 meeting. These funds will support a new strategic grantmaking partnership known as the DuPage Community Transformation Partnership.

DuPage County approved an agreement in January to provide $10.6 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding for the Foundation to implement a grant program to support social service not-for-profit organizations helping DuPage County residents most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program will focus on providing assistance for food insecurity, housing instability, mental health and substance abuse.

Guidelines will be developed over the next few months and an announcement regarding the application process will be made in spring 2022.

County launches online permitting system DuPage County residents no longer need to file permit applications in-person. On Jan. 31, DuPage County launched its new online permitting system, allowing residents to apply for permits from home.

The new system will allow for electronic submissions of several types of permits, including building permits, highway permits, utility permits, zoning entitlements, and more.

It will also allow residents to track the progress of their permit application online as DuPage County moves to a paperless permitting program.

The permitting system will bring the Building and Zoning, Division of Transportation, and Public Works departments into the existing system that has been utilized by Stormwater Management for the past three years.

DuPage County offering utility assistance DuPage County Community Services is accepting applications for two programs that provide funds for income-eligible residents for who need help paying water and energy utility bills.

Heating and Energy Applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which can be used to assist households with their natural gas, propane, and electric bills, are being accepted through May 31.

Emergency furnace assistance is also available.

LIHEAP provides one-time benefits to income eligible homeowners and renters to help with energy bills and for reconnection of energy service. Households must be at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level to receive a benefit from the LIHEAP Program.

The 30-day income guidelines for LIHEAP and PIPP are based on federal poverty guidelines, state median income, and the number of persons living in the household. Please visit www.dupageco.org/LIHEAP to find income limits.

“On Nov. 17 of last year, a young woman died after ingesting a fentanyl/ fluorofentanyl mixture allegedly supplied to her by the defendant in this case, Courvoisier Thomas,” Berlin said. “This is yet another senseless loss of a promising life snuffed out by illegal narcotics. The charges

filed send the message that anyone who supplies a deadly dose of a narcotic will not be able to simply walk away from the consequences of their actions. I thank the Addison Police Department, the DuPage County Sheriff’s Forensic Science Center, DuMeg and the DEA High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Program for their outstanding work in helping us secure a strong prosecution against Mr. Thomas.”

“Drug dealers are not doctors, or pharmaceutical companies and know

the substances they deliver are venom,” Hayden said. “Ignoring potential deadly consequences, dealers put their monetary desire over the health and safety of the user. We owe it to the families of the victims to sternly investigate such cases. By working together, law enforcement can get these dealers off our streets so they can’t continue to kill people indiscriminately.”

Thomas’ next court appearance is scheduled April 27 for arraignment in front of Judge Kinsella.

York softball team opens season against Fremd, Leyden Dukes out to defend West Suburban Silver and regional titles

The York softball team wasted little time getting its season started with a pair of non-conference games last week against Fremd and Leyden. In a 7-6 non-conference loss to Palatine Fremd, senior Lindsey Bingham had two hits and an RBI, while senior Emily Carrasco had a hit, a run scored and two RBI. Senior Kara Jensen and junior Maddie Tran each had a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Freshman Nubia Toledo had a hit and a run scored.

run, while striking out six.

York also dropped a 6-3 West Suburban Conference crossover game to Leyden. The Eagles, who had three hits in the game, led 6-1 after four innings. York committed four errors.

Senior Emily Fujiwara had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Senior Emily Kunst had a hit and a run scored, while freshman Taylor McMillen had a hit. Bingham had a run scored, a hit and an RBI. Carrasco and Tran each had a hit.

Fujiwara and Bingham each hit a home run in the game.

McMillen and classmate Avery Kanouse combined to strike out 11

and allow two earned runs.

York is coming off a 2021 season where it went 20-3, won the WSC Silver Division with an 11-1 mark and lost in the sectional title game to Marist. Fujiwara headlines a list of returning players for coach Brendan Holba. Fujiwara (2B) was an all-state second-team pick last year and earned York’s top junior female athlete of the year honor.

She batted .400 with 9 doubles, 7 home runs and 28 RBI, also earning an all-WSC Silver award.

Bingham, who played third last season, was an all-state third-team pick, as well as an all-WSC Silver selection. She hit .382 with 7

doubles and 11 RBI. Senior Haley Sandoval, who was York’s main leadoff hitter last year, hit .340 and stole 15 bases in as many attempts.

Jensen played a lot of first base last year for the Dukes, but Holba stressed he’s looking for her to “step up and provide us with bigtime innings in the circle,” he said.

Jensen was 2-1 with 14 strikeouts in 14 innings a year ago.

Junior Molly Heiss (OF-SS) will also be counted on. “Molly has retooled her swing and we think her new swing and strong leadership abilities are going to help push us to another successful season,” Holba explained. Kanouse (P) and

freshman classmate Caitlin Ledbetter (IF-OF) are among several key newcomers for the Dukes.

“We are excited about this season, especially with a large group of returners from last season,” Holba said. “We will need to fill some gaps at catcher and pitcher, but we think we have a strong young core in those positions that we can build into a very strong battery. After a total lost year and a season limited to just conference games, there is great excitement to get back to a full 35-game schedule. It will be a tough nonconference slate, but we are looking to compete with some of the state’s best this spring.”

“We had our best season in the nine years I have been the head coach,” York coach Mark Giuliani said.

And now the Dukes are poised to keep the momentum rolling. Giuliani is excited about having junior Rose Jensen back.

Jensen earned all-state third-team honors as a sophomore after averaging four goals a game. “Rose will be in the running for player of the year — in my biased opinion,” the coach noted. “She is an all-around threat

and is always one of the fastest girls in the water.”

Also back are seniors Gabi Honken, Meghan Kriz, Julia Beltran, Fiona Cunningham and Paige Prather, along with sophomore Frannie Cunningham and Jane Marlott. Also notable is the presence of junior goalie Eva Graefe. “Eva is an absolute beast,” Giuliani said.

Giuliani calls his team really well-balanced “between individual skill, speed and water polo IQ,” he said. “They are a great group of girls that likes to have fun and work hard.

Getting a taste of the state tournament has increased their motivation to play during the offseason and make a deeper run this year.”

York will have to make up for the loss of 2021 all-state first-team selection Emma Stec, who is now playing at Division I Wagner Univer-

sity. “Emma was a significant loss, but I believe the work the girls put in during the summer and winter has the team looking stronger than last year. I have a deep bench with a lot of girls who can impact the game. The strength of this team? The answer is Rose Jensen and the team around her.

I believe this is one of the strongest teams in the state and we are excited to show what we have.”

York is off to a 6-0 start so far this season, winning each of those six games by 10 or more goals.

The Dukes recorded wins over Mundelein, Hinsdale Central, St. Ignatius, Lincoln-Way West, Riverside-Brookfield and Morton. York also hosted defending state champion Naperville North late last week.

The 2021 season was a banner one and then some for the York boys lacrosse team.

Veteran coach Don Canfield’s squad went 20-2, won the West Suburban Conference with a perfect 10-0 record and finished third in the state.

York’s lone blemishes were to eventual state champion Loyola Academy during the regular season and to Lake Forest in the state semifinals. York beat Wheaton Academy in the state third-place game. Impressive.

But with what the Dukes have returning this season--impressive may be just a stop on the expressway leading to even greater accomplishments.

“We have playmakers at every position,” Canfield pointed out. “Guys with experience in big games, and a strong senior class that is committed to success.”

DuPage County announces 2022 Transportation Capital Program Road construction season will soon be underway! The DuPage County Division of Transportation announced its 2022 Capital Program on March 1, focusing on maintaining and improving the County’s infrastructure.

The 2022 Highway Capital Program proposes nearly $53.5 million in federal and County funds to maintain existing infrastructure, while also implementing projects to improve safety and relieve congestion. Fifty-three lane miles of DuPage County highway are due to be patched and resurfaced under the plan. These projects will improve rideability and extend the service life of existing pavement.

“We are loaded with returning talent but there are no egos. Everyone is there to support each other and improve day in and day out.” Canfield noted the team is hard at work on one particular key aspect. “We are still figuring out what our faceoff teams will look like,” he said. “We have

four guys currently competing each day against each other.”

Canfield said to keep an eye on Glenbard West in the WSC this spring. “Glenbard West returns a lot of talent from last year and is always competitive,” he said. “We’re excited to again have a team with the talent to compete with the best teams in the state. I feel we have a strong chance to defend our conference title and look at Glenbard West as another

strong team out of the West Suburban Conference. We have a strong core of returning players supplemented with some newer guys we will look to fill out our roster, especially at faceoff and defensive midfield. WorkNet DuPage announces paid internships available for young adults

The DuPage County Workforce Development Division at workNet DuPage on Tuesday, March 15 announced it is expanding its Youth Employment Program, Make Your Way (MY Way), to offer paid internships for young people ages 17-24.

The program’s expansion will connect the county’s youth to professional opportunities and work experiences of their choice through local employers in the private, nonprofit, and public sectors. The initiative allows young adults to meet with marketing, nonprofit, and creative professionals, as well as tech, manufacturing, and industrial sectors to explore careers, build critical work skills, network, and gain competitive paid work experience.

Participants receive intensive support throughout the process, including: • Ongoing career advisement and job readiness programming • Active job search help with the guide of a job developer • One year of follow-up services

• The option to attend school or a job training program, up to $10,000, ending with a nationally recognized certification.

The pandemic sparked disproportionate economic and mental hardship among young adults. At a time in life when young adults typically launch a career, many experienced a “lost year.” Young workers’ already-higher unemployment rates tripled – with people of color most affected.

During the pandemic, youth unemployment in Illinois reached a staggering 23.3%.

Overdose statistics in DuPage County for 2021 DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen, M.D. recently reported the following data concerning overdose deaths in DuPage County for the year 2021.

The epidemic of opioid and other legal and illegal drugs continues to ravage the county. There was a decrease in the number of opioid related deaths (102 vs. 112 in 2020) but this seemingly good news is tempered by the increase in the total number of overdose deaths (138 vs. 130 in 2020).

Over the past few years there has been a major shift in the types and number of drugs found in blood of the deceased.

Prior to 2015 the drugs found were either heroin or prescription drugs.

Most often there was only one or two drugs in the system. However, starting in 2015 there was an influx of illicit Fentanyl in the FDA approved form and multiple new isomers.

There was also an increase in polypharmacy, which means that there were multiple different drugs found in the system. In this past year we saw these trends accentuated. The most important trend is that heroin is a minor drug at this point and fentanyl has become the major drug causing death.

Last year, there was only one death solely due to heroin, 13 due to heroin plus fentanyl and 17 with heroin, fentanyl and cocaine. fentanyl alone caused 29 deaths and fentanyl and cocaine caused 16 deaths. There were 102 opioid related deaths last year and only 36 (35 percent) involved heroin while 83 (81 percent) had fentanyl in the blood.

It must be stated that the analysis of this information is very difficult due to the poly pharmacy. It was very unusual for an analysis to find one or two drugs.

Rather, it was commonplace to find up to 15 drugs in the system making it difficult to determine which drug was responsible for the death.

There has also been an increase in non-opioid drugs, especially cocaine and prescription medications causing or contributing to death. In total there were 26 (vs. 18 in 2020) deaths that were due to non-opioid medications and 9 (vs. 6 in 2020) due to cocaine alone.

The previously noted trend of increasing age of the deceased has continued. In 2013 the most deaths were seen in the age group of the 20s and second most in the 30s. Last year the most common ages were the 30s through the 50s.
