As one resident put it, the idea of allowing a hoop house has gone beyond the request of the Virgil family living on South Fairview Ave. The Virgils had been ordered by the City to remove such a membrane structure from their backyard after a neighbor complained. Twenty-eight people, an unusually large number for a Development, Planning and Zoning (DPZ) meeting, showed up to express strong feelings about the idea of a structure that allows people to grow vegetables during cold weather. The residents said they had a right to do what they wanted in their backyards to be more environmentally-friendly by growing locally food products. That included Liz Chaplin, a DuPage County Board member who represents a portion of Elmhurst. She noted that for unincorporated areas the County treats Hoop Houses as it would for sheds which require a permit. “I am neither for or against the concept,” said Scott Levin (5th Ward), chairman of the DPZ. He explained that the March 13th meeting was the first step in gathering information to determine if Elmhurst should allow hoop houses. The topic could be on the DPZ agenda again the last meeting in April or the first meeting in May, he said. The alderman noted that it is not unusual for a topic to be on the DPZ agenda two or three times. Levin said he wanted to see how other communities dealt with hoop houses. This meeting is the first

Students at an area grade school got a real Irish treat on Friday, March 10 when performers from the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance came to entertain them. Afterward the dancers taught the audience how to perform the first step of a jig, preparing everyone to properly celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!
