As one resident put it, the idea of allowing a hoop house has gone beyond the request of the Virgil family living on South Fairview Ave. The Virgils had been ordered by the City to remove such a membrane structure from their backyard after a neighbor complained.

Twenty-eight people, an unusually large number for a Development, Planning and Zoning (DPZ) meeting, showed up to express strong feelings about the idea of a structure that allows people to grow vegetables during cold weather.

The residents said they had a right to do what they wanted in their backyards to be more environmentally-friendly by growing locally food products.

That included Liz Chaplin, a DuPage County Board member who represents a portion of Elmhurst. She noted that for unincorporated areas the County treats Hoop Houses as it would for sheds which require a permit.

“I am neither for or against the concept,” said Scott Levin (5th Ward), chairman of the DPZ. He explained that the March 13th meeting was the first step in gathering information to determine if Elmhurst should allow hoop houses. The topic could be on the DPZ agenda again the last meeting in April or the first meeting in May, he said.

The alderman noted that it is not unusual for a topic to be on the DPZ agenda two or three times.

Levin said he wanted to see how other communities dealt with hoop houses. This meeting is the first

Six thefts in seven days at local pharmacy According to the Elmhurst Police Department, six instances of retail theft were reported between Feb. 15 and Feb. 21 at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North.

The first two incidents were reported on Feb. 15. In the first incident, which reportedly occurred at around 9:39 p.m., a victim told police that an unknown suspect described as either a white male or Hispanic male wearing a blue baseball cap, black coat, and blue jeans took Oil of Olay cosmetics and left without paying. Complaints will be

signed if the suspect is located.

In the second incident, which reportedly occurred at around 10:18 p.m., a victim told police that three suspects described as black males took merchandise, consisting of shampoo, make up, deodorant, alcohol and sleep aids, and left without paying. One suspect was wearing a black knit cap, dark jacket and a light T-shirt. The second suspect was wearing a dark coat and dark pants. The third suspect was wearing an orange and blue winter cap, a black and white coat and dark pants.

The third incident was reported at around 11:10 p.m. Feb. 17. A victim reports that an unknown suspect described as a black male reportedly took shampoo, Oil of Olay and body wash, and left without paying. The suspect was wearing a black and red baseball cap, a dark jacket and black pants with white stripes on the side.

Two additional incidents took place on Feb. 18. At around 9:58 p.m., a victim told police that two suspects described as black males took deodorant and shampoo and left without paying. One suspect

was wearing a black knit stocking cap, an orange shirt and jeans. The other suspect was wearing a puffy winter goat that is dark green and blue jeans.

At around 10:37 p.m., a victim told police that two suspects described as black males allegedly took shampoo and body wash and left without paying. One suspect was wearing a dark winter coat and dark pants. The second suspect had glasses, a red baseball cap and dark winter coat.

Third Ward Alderman Dannee Polomsky thanked everyone who helped put the report together.

Bram raised a final question.

“At one time, there was competing interest in an airport in Peotone,” he said. “Do we know if that is still on the table.”

Morley and Grabowski indicated they didn’t know if plans for an airport in Peotone were still in the works or not but said they would find out.

Proclamation given for Elmhurst Cyber Club

This group of young people representing the Elmhurst Cyber Club were introduced at City Council on the evening of Monday, March 20, so Mayor Steve Morley could deliver a proclamation to celebrate the group’s recent win at the Cyber Patriot Challenge. The Challenge is put on by the Air Force Association, which poses various problems to the competitors. The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

March 8-March 9 A victim in the 100 block of E. Grand told police that between the above dates, an unknown suspect(s) drilled a hole into the gas tank of his vehicle causing damage. A matter of record.

March 3 Police said a suspect stayed at a local hotel in the 300 block of N. Route 83 from late February into early March. A hole in the bathroom door consistent with a kick and a broken floor tile were found while a suspect was staying there. He admitted to the damage and an agreement was made between the suspect and the hotel staff; the suspect was made aware he would pay for the damage once he got the money. Hotel staff at that time just wanted the room paid for and didn’t want to sign complaints. After realizing the credit card on file was now overdrawn and would not complete the transaction of owed money, hotel staff now wanted to sign complaints. Attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful.

Criminal sexual assault

March 13 Police said that during a sexual assault investigation at a hospital in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill Road at around 7:28 p.m., a victim advised a sexual assault happened at an unknown location last week. The victim did not want any law enforcement action taken and had left the hospital before an officer arrived.

The sexual assault evidence kit was placed into evidence at the Elmhurst Police Department.

Disorderly conduct, trespass notice

March 15 Disorderly conduct was reported at a car dealership in the 400 block of W. Lake St. at around 7:26 p.m. Police said a suspect became upset when he was advised that he would not be able to obtain financing for a vehicle because of his credit. The suspect said that he would come back and damage some cars in the lot. Report is made as a matter of record.

March 12 Delia M. Gonzalez, 36, of Chicago, was charged with disorderly conduct-public intoxication, near Church Street and Kenmore Avenue at around 6:59 a.m. Police said officers were dispatched for an intoxicated subject at the intersection. Officers located Gonzalez who allegedly had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her breath and had difficulty balancing.

Domestic incident, domestic battery

March 15 A 19-year-old Chicago woman was charged with domestic battery at a college in the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 1:59 a.m. Police said officers responded to the college for a possible domestic between a boyfriend and

March 12 A 29-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of W. First St. at around 8:03 p.m. Police said officers were called to the south side train platform for the report of a female pushing a male.

The victim advised he was trying to help the suspect by gathering documents she needed for job applications. He said she pushed him to the ground. The victim had visible bruises on himself.

March 9 Officers responded to the report of a domestic situation the 100 block of E. Belden at around 6:25 a.m. A victim told police that both her daughter and her friend punched her in the face. The suspects advised that victim ran through the house and fell. No arrests made due to conflicting stories.

March 14 Police said that subsequent to a traffic crash in the 100 block of Myrtle at around 2:16 p.m., the suspect, Andrew M. Riemer, 18, of Mundelein, was found to be driving while under the influence of drugs and was in possession of heroin. Riemer was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, DUIdrugs, leaving the scene of a property damage crash, improper lane usage and no insurance.

March 13 Sildi Drabo, 24, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, and also was issued a citation for no overnight parking, in the 300 block of N. Oaklawn Ave. at around 3:40 a.m. Police said while conducting overnight parking enforcement, a reporting officer located a subject sleeping inside the listed vehicle. Contact was made with Drabo, the occupant, whom police said had an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath and consented to search of his vehicle.

According to police, two plastic straws with white powdery residue were located and Drabo admitted to using them to ingest cocaine.

Also located was a baggie containing .3 grams of cocaine, police said.

March 11 • Jesus Gutierrez-Sosa, 22, of Addison, was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol, driving while license suspended, no rear plate light and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop in the 700 block of N. Church Road at around 12:45 a.m.

• Officers responded to the 300 block of N.

Highview at around 3:39 p.m. for the report of subjects shoving each other. The suspect was using the victim’s cell phone which had a low battery. An argument and physical altercation ensued when the suspect did not return the cell phone. Due to mutual combatants and no complaints to be signed, no arrests were made.

• A complainant at a high school in the 300 block of W. St. Charles told police that he observed a juvenile who appeared to be intoxicated walking inside the school. The suspect was located and admitted to consuming alcohol in the area of Chicago. The suspect was cited for consumption of alcohol by a minor.

March 9 Aleksandras Zakarauskas, 21, of Oakbrook Terrace, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and expired registration subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Lake at around 12:25 a.m.

Fleeing-eluding

March 14 • Andre Vena, 30, of Cedar Lake, Ind., was charged with fleeing and eluding, driving while license suspended, speeding, improper lane usage and failure to signal subsequent to an attempted traffic stop near North Avenue and Berteau at around 1:23 a.m. Police said the vehicle Vena was driving refused to stop and fled away from the reporting officer at a high rate of speed. Police said Vena was later located at his home and placed into custody.

He was found to be a fugitive from justice out of Indiana, according to police.

• Police said that subsequent to an attempted traffic stop for speeding near North and Clinton at around 7:22 p.m., a suspect vehicle fled eastbound on North Avenue, failing to yield for the reporting officer. No pursuit was initiated. An investigation is pending.

Harassment, threats

March 11 A victim in the 200 block of Claremont Avenue told police at around 6:51 p.m. that a suspect has continuously contacted him in person and via telephone over the past few months in regards to a personal matter. No complaints are to be signed at this time. The suspect was contacted and was told to cease contact with victim.

Leaving the scene of an accident

March 11 Police said Phillip Breckler, 29, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for leaving the scene of an accident and improper lane usage after striking an attended vehicle near Butterfield at Commonwealth Lane at around 3:33 p.m.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, controlled substance

March 15 • Kiana Martinez, 19, of Lombard, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 12:24 a.m.

• Victoria Stachura, 25, of Schiller Park, was charged with possession of cannabis and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and Industrial at around 12:05 a.m.

• Jaslynn J. Turner, 24, of Bellwood, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding following a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 1:18 p.m.

March 12 Stephanie Sieja, 19, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and expired registration subsequent to a traffic

stop near North and Route 83 at around 11:03 p.m.

March 11 • Chelsea Chambers, 23, of Wheaton, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair Avenue at around 11:28 p.m.

March 15 • Police said that while patrol officers were on patrol, they observed two subjects enter a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North Ave. carrying a large purse which appeared to be empty. The officers observed the subjects inside the store walking around and then leaving the store without purchasing any items, according to police. Upon making contact with the subject next to their vehicle, police said it was learned that Ana Rabago, 24, of Chicago, stole merchandise from the pharmacy.

Jonathan Azuara, 23, of Chicago, was found to be in possession of cannabis. Rabago was charged with retail theft and Azuara was issued a citation for possession of cannabis.

• A victim in the 400 block of N. Oak St. told police at around 4:50 p.m. that her husband received a phone call from Verizon Wireless located in Indiana. The Verizon employee advised that his wife was currently in the store and was attempting to purchase a phone. The victim’s husband knew his wife was not in Indiana in a Verizon store. A Verizon employee advised the suspect provided an Illinois driver’s license with the victim’s correct address and date of birth. March 9-March 13 A victim came to the police station to report a stolen vehicle in the 700 block of N. Church Road between the above dates. A victim still has the keys to his beige-colored 1972 Mercedes Benz. The car was parked in the warehouse lot; there was no evidence of a breakin at the site. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen.

March 5-March 13 A victim in Birch Tree Court told police that between the above dates, an unknown suspect made a fraudulent transaction using her Amazon account and her associated American Express credit card. An Intel computer system, which she did not order, was delivered to her home and she also found that an unauthorized U.S. mail hold request was made for her residence.

March 11 • Alicia R. Sartain, 31, of West Chicago, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 100 block of W. First St. at around 7 p.m. Police said Sartain entered the business to use the restroom and upon exiting, stole a package of 20-count almond cookies.

• A complainant at a national chain restaurant in the 300 block of S. Route 83 told police at around 3:35 p.m. a suspect described as an Hispanic female between 18 and 20 years old with long, black hair wearing a gray hoodie and multi-colored yoga pants, attempted to pay with a counterfeit $100 bill. The complainant advised her that he would not accept

Unconscious juvenile reportedly ingested cannabis

On March 11, police said officers were called to assist medics with an unconscious male in the 700 block of W. St. Charles at around 9 p.m. The juvenile victim reportedly ingested an unknown amount of cannabis while at a party at the above location. The victim was transported to Elmhurst Hospital for evaluation. A juvenile suspect was found to be in possession of cannabis and tobacco, according to police, and was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and underage possession of tobacco.

Victim claims suspect touched his belongings

Battery was reported on March 15, when officers responded to a hotel in the 400 block of W. Lake St. at around 3:41 a.m. for the victim who told police that a suspect had accused him of touching her. The victim states that the suspect approached him and began to flirt with him, while touching his belongings. The victim asked suspect to leave his things alone— that is when suspect approached the clerk and accused victim of touching her. The victim would like the matter documented.

Underage drinking suspect found with brass knuckles

Marcello Positano, 19, of St. Charles, was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, and Andrew Simic, 18, of Elmwood Park, was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor and unlawful use of a weapon in the 100 block of W. First St. on March 11 at around 3:10 p.m. Police said officers responded to a report of a disturbance on a stopped Metra train at the train depot.

According to police, Positano and Simic were found to be intoxicated and placed under arrest. Police said Simic was also in possession of brass knuckles.

The officer was advised that the Wheaton restaurant had a similar incident two weeks ago, with what appeared to be the same suspect.

March 10 A victim in the 500 block of Sunnyside told police at around 9:45 a.m. that he was contacted by a person representing himself as an agent for PNC Bank. The caller reportedly told victim that an unknown suspect had attempted to open a credit account using the victim’s personal information. The victim then supplied the caller with the last four digits of his Social Security number. A reporting officer’s attempts to contact the bank employee for further information were unsuccessful. The victim placed a freeze on any future credit activity.

March 5-March 10 A victim came to the police station to report that he received a Pandora credit card in the mail that he never applied for between the above dates.

The credit card account already had a balance. The victim believes this may stem back to a security breach with his Blue Cross Blue Shield account approximately 18 months ago.

Nov. 15, 2016-March 10 A victim in the 500 block of W. Second St. advised at around 3:06 p.m. that during the above noted time frame, an unknown suspect cut the retention cord and removed the spare tire from her vehicle.

March 9 Officers responded for an alleged retail theft that reportedly occurred at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at around 5:52 p.m. The suspect reportedly left the scene prior to arrival. The Villa Park Police Department located the vehicle and the suspects were taken into custody. A “large amount” of shampoo, deodorant, and other items were recovered, according to police. Keith Henderson, 44 and Terry Davis, 43, both of Chicago, were charged with felony retail theft. Arthur Henderson, 62, of Chicago, was charged with misdemeanor retail theft.

March 8-March 9 • A victim at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand Ave. told police that between the above dates,

they found the tires, wheels, tire pressure sensors, lug nuts and center caps all stolen off a 2017 Dodge Charger RT. • A complainant in the 400 block of N. Highview told police that between the above dates, an unknown suspect(s) entered her unlocked vehicles in the driveway, moved the contents of the Jeep Cherokee’s glovebox onto the passenger seat, and took a piece of jewelry and a GPS unit.

The Wrangler’s rear hatch was not properly secured and the doors were found locked.

March 6 Victims in the 400 block of Myrtle Avenue told police at around 2:44 p.m. that they received a letter from the IRS stating that someone filed a tax return using their information.

The victims called the IRS and verified the letter was legitimate. Victims do not know how anyone obtained their personal identification information.

March 2 A victim in the 100 block of W. North Ave. told police at around 1:53 p.m. that two suspects described as a white male and a black male took soaps, deodorant, shampoo, and other personal care products from a store and left without paying. The white male was reportedly wearing a dark/black coat with a hood, jeans and gray sweatshirt. The black male was reportedly wearing black pants, a black coat with “Brooklyn” on the chest, and a black knit cap with an unknown white logo. The victim will sign complaints if the suspects are located.

March 1 A victim in the 500 block of Swain told police at around 8:08 a.m. that unknown suspects used her Visa card information to make two online purchases. The victim contacted each retailer and had the purchases canceled. Chase Bank was also contacted and the credit card was canceled.

Feb. 28 Police said a reporting detective conducted neighborhood interviews following a burglary to a vehicle that occurred in the 100 block of Hawthorne Avenue on the above date. The victim was shown a photograph of a recovered bicycle which the burglary suspect admitted to stealing from a garage in the area. The victim identified the bicycle as belonging to her son and advised it had been stolen

from their detached garage, which had been unlocked. The victim provided paperwork from the purchase of the bicycle, which matched the serial number on the recovered bicycle.

Feb. 22 A victim at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North Ave. told police at around 9:21 p.m. that a suspect described as a white male or Hispanic male took Breathe Right nasal strips.

The suspect is described as bald, with a beard, wearing a dark hoody, gray T-shirt and blue jeans. If the subject is able to be identified, the victim will sign complaints.

Feb. 16 • A victim in Oak Tree Court told police at around 3:42 p.m. that after reviewing her bank statement, she noticed a withdrawal at an ATM and was advised by her bank that they would do an internal investigation.

A responding officer contacted the bank and was advised that upon entry, the account number was mistakenly transposed and they returned the currency to the victim’s account.

The victim was advised to check her credit score and accounts for unusual activity.

• Police said the subsequent to a retail theft investigation at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North Ave. at around 1:13 p.m., an officer was advised of an unreported retail theft that had occurred. Taken was deodorant, body wash and sleep aids. There were two suspects; the first suspect was described as a black male wearing a black/red baseball cap with longer hair, a black winter coat and a gray T-shirt. The second suspect was described as a black male with short hair, wearing a dark coat and jeans.

Feb. 12-Feb. 18 A victim in the 800 block of Mitchell told police at around 5:39 p.m. that she had a check missing from her checkbook. The victim checked her records and showed the check was written out to “cash” in the amount of $200 with her name but not her correct signature.

Dec. 20, 2016-Feb. 15 A complainant in the 100 block of W. Diversey told police that during the above noted time frame, a victim’s purse went missing.

Jan. 1-Jan. 10 The owner of a company in the 100 block of Adell Place told police that a suspect stole cash from him between the above dates.

Lisle woman accused of forging petitions for seat on COD Board of Trustees DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that Rafath Waheed, 61, of 6193 Hickory Drive, Lisle, has been charged with submitting forged petitions to earn a seat on the College of DuPage (COD) Board of Trustees. On March 14, 2017, a $10,000 with 10% to apply arrest warrant was issued for Waheed. Last night, Waheed turned herself in to authorities and was released after posting the necessary $1,000, or 10%, of her $10,000 bond.

It is alleged prior to December 19, 2016, Waheed collected signatures on petitions for her to apply as a candidate for the COD Board of Trustees. It is further alleged that at some point in time, Waheed made photocopies of two completed signature portions of the petitions and then completed the candidate information by hand.

It is further alleged that she then notarized those petitions as authentic. It is alleged that Waheed then filed these petitions, along with the

Viewpoint Slices of life Last week my husband and I splurged on a little out-of-town getaway. We were only gone for one night. We figured the kids could handle that without setting the kitchen on fire or flooding the bathroom. We didn’t expect any miracles, like the time one of them actually filled and ran the dishwasher. (True story.)

They assured us they had things covered. We even trusted son number one to get son number three to school in the morning. Which he did. (I guess that probably qualifies as a miracle.)

We didn’t anticipate perfect behavior on their part. Date night always comes with a cost. We figured they’d stay up later than usual and plug in more than we would have preferred.

We expected to come home to empty pizza boxes, footprints by the back door, dishes in the sink and toast crumbles on the countertop.

We were not disappointed. All those things greeted us upon our arrival home.

But the first thing we noticed was the furniture. The couch and loveseat in the family room were slightly askew, as if they’d been bumped or moved and then reset in not quite the right spot. The couch cushions sat catawampus; they too had been dislodged and clumsily readjusted.

No big deal. My husband and I have seen worse. But it did pique our collective curiosity. What had they been up to? (It’s a question I’ve asked myself time and time again over the years.)

The answer was soon forthcoming. As we entered the room to put the furniture back in place, we saw

the bullets. The floor was littered with at least a dozen of them.

I looked across the room and found the source of said bullets: brightly colored plastic toy guns.

The kind that shoot foam bullets and rhyme with surf and turf. They were piled atop the dining room table.

It was starting to make sense.

My husband and I gave each other a knowing look, the kind married couples do after being together long enough to have teenagers. And then we shared a chuckle.

It was obvious; the boys had a war while we were gone. It must have been a doozy. Over the next few days we found bullets in various nooks and crannies throughout the house. I gathered them to save for the next battle. Those things aren’t cheap.

Some moms might be upset with living room warfare – especially in their own living rooms. I’ve learned over the years that unless a bone or window or heart is broken,

it’s probably best to take things in stride. Foam bullets are pretty low on the risk meter. It’s highly unlikely they’d break a window or put a dent in the drywall, much less a tibia.

Besides, when you are shooting foam bullets at your brother, neither you nor he is plugged into any sort of “device.”

Not only that, but you are interacting the old fashioned way – face to face, or in this case gun to gun – with another human being. As a mom, I’ll take what I can get. This was a glass-half-full situation if ever there was one.

When questioned about their use of foam-based weaponry there were

confessions all around. They were sheepish at first, but then got caught up in the excitement of describing their epic battle. Sounds like it was a full-throttled blitzkrieg. They agreed on that much. They had differing opinions as to who won the war. We may never know. That’s okay.

Because when it comes to love and war, brothers trump winning any day.

College to screen documentary on renowned art collective Elmhurst College will be screening a documentary about a renowned Chicago art collective on Friday, March 31 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Schaible Science Center, Illinois Hall, on the campus of Elmhurst College elmhurst.edu/campusmap).

The documentary, called Hairy Who and The Chicago Imagists is an

engrossing and lavishly illustrated production about a dynamic group of artists who, beginning in the 1960s and spanning two decades, thumbed their noses at the art establishment, producing works that were outrageous, aggressive, humorous and significant.

Elmhurst Chess Tournament draws 275+ students Tuesday, March 14 was a great day for chess at York High School as the parent, student and community volunteers welcomed more than 275 students from 2nd through 12th grade to the 21st Annual Elmhurst Student Chess Tournament. The participants represented 14 different public and private schools in Elmhurst. For over two decades, community volunteers have worked with school chess leaders to offer an opportunity for students to learn and play chess at their school in a fun environment that gives our students a chance to “taste friendly chess competition.”

Because of the increased turnout, the York High School Chess Team, along with other student volunteers, were needed to assist on the chess floor. During the tournament, students competed in 5 timed matches.

On the competition floor were 6 independent judges, 6 scorekeepers, 2 pairing software controllers and York’s very own chess sponsor, Jeremy Paschke, as the MC. In addition, two team members managed 30 parent volunteers who passed out donated snacks to players, parents and siblings. Throughout the evening, there were 138 boards placed, 690 clocks set and reset, 22,080 chess pieces arranged, and many raffled prizes won, which were donated by the It’s Good To Be King store in Elmhurst. That’s a lot of chess piece moves, all on a school night!

At the end of the evening all 22,080 pieces needed to be cleaned, polished and put to bed. Parents were grateful that the following morning was a district-wide student late arrival day in D205. ​First place winners received a trophy; second, third and fourth place winners received ribbons. More than a dozen members of the 100+Women Who Care of Elmhurst donned their business heels and pearls with their destination as the Ray Graham’s Association Hanson Center in Burr Ridge, which supports a therapeutic horsemanship program for individuals with disabilities. More than 100 volunteers run the barn and care for 20+ horses and other farm animals. The 100+ Women’s donation of $14,800 will provide scholarships for adults with disabilities who live on a limited income and cannot otherwise afford this unique opportunity to participate in the Horsemanship Program at the Hanson Center.

100+ Women Who Care provide scholarships On a typical brisk March day, you would not expect to find a dozen ladies from Elmhurst in their business heels and pearls at a dusty barn, but March 9 was not a typical day. It was the day to bring a check for $14,800 to Ray Graham’s Association’s Hanson Center in Burr Ridge to support their incredible therapeutic horsemanship program from the 100+ Women Who Care of Elmhurst. The group was greeted by local cowboy John Maniatis, the brilliant Horsemanship Instructor and Cathy LeBeau, the Therapeutic Horsemanship Coordinator, whose gentle demeanor is truly the brains behind this enormous operation that provides 160 lessons per week and coordinates over 100 volunteers to run the barn and care for the 20+ horses and other farm animals at the Hanson Center. The cost to feed and care for the animals is about $60,000 per year, so monetary gifts and volunteering is essential to continue this work. The benefits of the horsemanship program are countless. Whether adults have been diagnosed with

a disability or suffer from a traumatic brain injury, the program has a lasting, positive effect. But for some, the fees associated with these riding lessons prevent them from reaping such a reward. The 100+ Women’s donation of $14,800 will provide scholarships for adults with disabilities who live on a limited income and cannot otherwise afford this unique opportunity to participate in the Horsemanship Program at the Hanson Center.

In February at the quarterly meeting held at Angelo’s Restaurant in Elmhurst, the 100+ Women’s group met and voted make their collective donation to this special program.

At that point, each woman from the group writes a check for only $100, but the total amount from the Elmhurst membership allowed them to make the sizeable donation of almost $15,000, which can really make an impact on the programming of any nonprofit organization. Such a simple concept yielding such amazing results!

The Elmhurst Symphony Musicians in Performance at Mayslake series concludes its 2016-17 season with “All That Jazz” on Thursday, April Patti Garvey 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook. Lake Effect to perform benefit concert for Symphony The local band Lake Effect will be performing a concert to benefit the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, April 8 from 12-4 p.m at Pinstripes in Oak Brook.

Lake Effect will be the spotlight of the afternoon, providing music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s will be in the spotlight throughout the afternoon.

The League of Women Voters of Elmhurst will host a program on mental health resources in the County on Thursday, March 23 at 7 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave., as they explore the resources available in DuPage County for those dealing with mental health issues.

Meredith Kober of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), will be the speaker. Kober has an educational background in social work. She will speak about the signs and symptoms of mental illness and will be joined by trained presenters with lived experience.

The League supports a comprehensive and coordinated system of treatment and rehabilitation services for mentally ill adults and children. There should be adequate funding, planning, program standards, and personnel training requirements for both state facilities and community programs. Police Department awarded grant

The Elmhurst Police Department has once again been awarded a traffic enforcement grant by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The goal of this grant is to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes with additional enforcement of DUI and seatbelt laws.

The grant allows extra officers to be on patrol looking for impaired drivers and seatbelt violations. The majority of this extra enforcement will take place during the overnight hours, which is the most dangerous time to be on the roadway.

Motorists are encouraged to drive safely and to always buckle up. People are also encouraged to contact police if they see a vehicle that appears to be driven by an intoxicated driver.

Pure Barre offers fitness with ballet barre New business owner feels parallels with community

It has only been four months since Pure Barre opened its doors in Elmhurst, yet in that short time, its owner Liz Naber has made significant connections to her clients as well as the Elmhurst community. Pure Barre is a total body workout that works each major muscle group to the point of fatigue, incorporating a ballet barre for part of the workout.

“The workout is extremely low-impact, yet high-intensity and the entire class is set to upbeat, motivating music,” Naber told the Independent. “Pure Barre creates long, lean muscles, while also providing the mental stimulation needed to improve self-confidence, mood enhancement and overall well-being.”

Naber discovered Pure Barre when looking for a workout she could perform after she was sideline for a long period of time by two serious knee injuries.

“I stumbled across Pure Barre as I was walking home from work one day, and de-

cided to try it,” she recalled. She was hooked from the first class which exhausted her every muscle.

“I walked into that first class very skeptical and left realizing it was everything I was missing in my workout. I genuinely noticed results in just four classes. Fast forward four years, and Pure Barre still challenges me each and every class. Additionally, I am able to workout with my 60-year-old mother, my sister, my young 20-something cousin, and my husband all at once. It’s pretty amazing. From increased strength and definition, to better flexibility, posture and overall self-confidence, Pure Barre has been one of the best things to happen to me in my life.”

Though her previous career was not fitness-related, Naber has always been interested in athletics and fitness. She grew up dancing and playing soccer until the two activities eventually conflicted with each other. Naber chose to focus all her attention on playing soccer, to which she attributes much of her passion for being a part of team/community.

The DuPage Narcan® Program (DNP) has released its annual report and, according to Dr. Richard Jorgensen, DuPage County Coroner, the county saw a sharp increase in deaths and saves related to opioid overdoses.

There were 78 deaths and 145 saves related to opioid overdoses in 2016. The number of deaths attributed to fentanyl doubled, to 16 compared to eight the previous year. A synthetic drug, fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.

“These numbers reveal that our

work is not done in the quest to beat this epidemic,” Jorgensen said in the report. “We must continue to bring education to our citizens about this problem to prevent the misuse of opioids, treat those who are addicted and eradicate the supply of illegal drugs.”

The 78 opioid related deaths last year represent nearly half the total of the 162 deaths since 2014.

Most lives are saved through the use of the nasal spray Naloxone, also known as Narcan, which reverses the effects of heroin and other opioids.

Since 2014, 3,143 individuals have

been trained to administer naloxone among 60 program sites across DuPage County and the northern Illinois area.

In an encouraging trend, leaders of many DNP program sites (police departments, schools, etc.) are now funding their supply of Narcan, showing an increased commitment to reversing overdoses linked to heroin and other opioids.

Although the DNP was funded initially by the DuPage County Board of Health, the program now operates on private donations, grants and local funding.

Off to a hot start IC Catholic Prep alum Gabby Curran playing well at the collegiate level for Domincian

IC Catholic Prep alum Gabby Curran is off to a red-hot start on the softball diamond.

Curran, now a sophomore second baseman-outfielder for Dominican University in River Forest, recently was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference position player of the week for the March 6-12 timeframe.

Curran hit safely in nine of the team’s 10 games during the span.

She had three games where she had three hits each. Curran hit .552 in those games and had a .667 onbase percentage. She also had four extra-base hits including a pair of home runs (.897 slugging percentage) as the team’s leadoff hitter.

She also walked nine times, while striking out once and stole seven bases without getting caught.

Curran’s hot hand helped Dominican close out its first undefeated spring trip to Fort Myers, Fla. The team went 12-0 there.

“This year the team set the goal of going undefeated in Florida,” she said. “We stepped up our game in general. We did everything we could to get on base and score runs.”

Through late last week Curran was hitting .460 (second on the team) with 23 hits in 50 at-bats in 16 games. She has two doubles, two triples, the two home runs and nine RBI. She’s slugging .700 and has 10 walks and nine stolen bases.

“I’ve worked a lot on my hitting,” she said. “I worked on hitting a lot outside of school with my hitting coach and with my dad two or three times a week. Any extra work I could get in I did.”

Curran said having a year of college softball experience under her belt has made a huge difference.

“I’m a lot more confident this year,” she said. “Being a sophomore this year I know my role as a leadoff hitter.”

And Curran is embracing a new role on the other side of the coin as a catcher.

“Learning how to be a catcher this year has helped me out a lot,” she said. “You learn to pick up things like what type of pitches are coming and what sequences coaches call.”

Curran said the catching opportunity came about after a player withdrew from the school. “Coach said would you be interested in catching and I said sure,” she said.

“Wherever the team needs me to play is where I’ll play. I learned how to catch and I’ve started maybe 13 games there. I was a little unsure about it at first. But after going back there and taking in what I was taught, you let your athletic ability take over. Once you do that it’s kind of a normal position.”

Curran enjoys the hustle and bustle of the position. “I really like that you are involved in every play and you take on a leadership role in general,” she said. “You are out there calling where the ball is. It’s one of the most important positions out there.”

Curran threw out a pair of runners trying to steal in Florida.

“That was pretty cool,” she said.

Curran who has hit four home runs in her collegiate career now, said she’s having a blast playing at Dominican.

“I like it a lot. I really enjoy playing college softball,” she said.

In the classroom, Curran is a biology major with a concentration in health science. “I’m going pre-med and (will) hopefully be a doctor.”

Last year, Curran was named a NACC scholar-athlete for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or higher for the academic year.

IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team starts season with PK win over Lincoln-Way Central Knights roster jam-packed with experience

The goal of the IC Catholic Prep girls soccer team is a rather simple one.

“The girls’ goal is to get downstate,” said Knights coach Tom Schergen. “Their theme of the year, they are using the word ‘breakthrough.’ They want to break through that wall and get downstate. They made it real simple. That is what they are striving for.”

The Knights started the season in fine form with a 2-1 win in penalty kicks over Lincoln-Way Central as part of the Windy City Classic tournament.

“It’s a big win for us to get a win against a school like that to start the year,” said Schergen. “The girls played well. It was a back-and-forth game. I was very proud of how our girls hung in there even when we

were on our heels. We kept to our defensive principles and played solid defense.”

Junior Grace Fuller scored IC Catholic Prep’s lone goal in regulation six minutes into the contest.

After two scoreless overtime sessions, the Knights hit their first three penalty kicks and Lincoln-Way Central missed its first three.

Sophomore Olivia Hurt, senior Tessa Langan and senior Tess Reardon each had a penalty kick.

Equally important was the play of junior goalie Rochelle Spizzirri in the second half.

“One of their kicks missed the net and Rochelle saved the other two,” said Schergen. “She came up huge for us.”

Sophomore Gabby Smola started in goal in the first half for the Knights.

The Knights return nine of 11 start-

ers this year, including senior Liz Maloney (center mid), senior Kaitlyn Grady (central defense), Fuller (forward), Hurt (forward), sophomore Suzy Maloney (outside fullback), Langan (center mid), Reardon (central defense), junior Sophie Zanoni (outside mid) and senior Demitra DelFiacco (midfield).

Key newcomers include freshmen Bella Leslie (outside mid) and Annie Guinan (outside fullback).

IC Catholic Prep is coming off a 2016 season where it went 13-11-1 overall.

“One thing I really like is our team chemistry,” said Schergen. “Since we have so many players back from last year we’ve been able to hit the ground running. This group gelled together at the end of the year and we wound up winning six of our

4th times the charm

The Elmhurst Airborne 8th grade girls team recently won its 4th consecutive West Suburban Girls basketball League championship.

Familiarity usually is a good word in sports.

And that’s the case with the Timothy Christian baseball team, which returns a host of players from a 2016 team that went 16-13 overall and finished 11-8 in the Metro Suburban Conference East Division.

That list of returners includes seniors Josh Anderson (CF-P), Joey Davidson (1B), Noah Marerra (C), Brian Schiff (3B-P) and Shaun VanTholen (2B-OF-P), along with juniors Jimmy Allen (SS-P) and Connor Gwaltney (DH-3B-C).

Anderson hit .337 last year, while Davidson hit .333 and played an outstanding first base. Allen led the team in hitting at .444.

Key newcomers to the team include senior Jonny Strube (OF-P) and juniors Nick Huisman (3B-1B-P), Jake Loerop (2B-SS-P), Brady Klooster (OF), Graham Loughead (OF) and Jon Tazelaar (OF).

“We have quite a bit of experience back, which is always a good thing,” said longtime Timothy Christian coach Jim Snoeyink. “The top six guys in the order all are returning. Jimmy will probably lead off for us. Josh batted second last year and will probably do that again. Joey Davidson is back and I think he made like one error at first base last year and saved us a lot of errors.”

Anderson, Schiff, Allen and VanTholen all logged innings on the mound last year and Snoeyink said Huisman will be counted on quite a bit on the hill as well.

“We also have quite a bit of pitching coming back,” he said. “We’re looking to get off to a good start and we’re looking forward to getting started. Guys like Brian Schiff, Jimmy Allen and Shaun VanTholen got a lot of innings last year and those will be some of the guys we will count on. We have good pitching depth and we’re going to need that type of depth.”

“Right now one of the question marks is who is going to play where when certain guys pitch,” said Snoeyink. “The good thing is we have some versatility to where we can handle that. We’ll figure out who will play where when guys are pitching and we’ll experiment a little in some of the early games.”

Snoeyink said Chicago Christian will be a team to keep an eye on in the MSC Red Division this year, but added his team is throwing its hat into the division contender ring.

Versatile York girls soccer team ready for action Varsity veterans Dvorak and Lundgren lead the way

York girls soccer coach Dan Vana has a lot to look forward to this season.

His Dukes’ squad is filled with plenty of potential thanks to a talented group of returners mixed in with talented newcomers.

“I think a strength of ours is our versatility,” said Vana. “We have a lot of players who can play a lot of different positions and in the conference we play in you need that versatility because there are so many good teams.”

York went 10-9 overall last year and finished 3-3 in the always tough West Suburban Conference Silver Division.

Back for the Dukes this season is four-year varsity starter Jenna Dvorak (defense), three-year starter Jenna Lundgren (midfield), along with junior forward Maggie Bleyer and senior midfielder Gabby Uribe. Lundgren will continue her soccer career at Western Illinois University.

“We also have some good senior leadership,” said Vana.

Key newcomers to the squad include senior defender Elizabeth Kowalski, junior midfielder Lauren Healy, senior midfielder Whitney Wood and junior midfielder Morgan McCarthy.

last eight games. We have some real good senior leadership out there. It’s like having four more coaches out on the field with Tess Reardon, Tessa Langan, Liz Maloney and Kaitlyn Grady.”

Schergen likes how the team is looking up the center of the field. “Our strongest position is up the middle with our central defense, center midfield and our forward—right up the middle with those six players. It’s a definite strength,” he said. “Four of the six are seniors so there is a lot of experience in the middle of the field. And playing high-school soccer, experience on the field goes a long way.”

Schergen also is a fan of the team’s demeanor. “I really enjoy their positive energy,” he said. “It’s a very positive group with no complainers. They come to practice and work hard and when we are playing games they are putting it all out there on the field and that’s always great to be able to coach a group like that. These girls show up and play the game hard. They want to push through that goal for themselves and pursue getting the team downstate.”

“We feel confident that we can be right there in the division championship race,” said Snoeyink. “That is what we are counting on. If we can stay healthy I would like to think we can be competing for the division title.”

Timothy will be in Myrtle Beach, S.C., next week for spring break. The Trojans are slated to play six games there against the likes of Friends Central (Pa.), Beachwood (Ohio), Elkhorn (Wis.) and Lake Century (Ohio). The team had games scheduled with Aurora Christian and Elgin Harvest Christian this week.

Vana said a major key to the team’s season is on the defensive front.

“We play solid team defense,” he said. “If our defense is good and we play solid and good back there like we can and find a goal somewhere, we can be very successful.”

Vana added the gelling together of the team also will be a factor. “It will be the development of the four returning starters and the development of the girls who did not play last year. How quick we get on board and up to speed will be important for us, especially in the conference we play in.”

Vana said that process already is well under way.

“It’s a fun group of girls,” he said.

“They like to be around each other and that’s half the battle right there. They work hard for each other and when you have something like that, you usually can have a good season.”

York is competing in the Elk Grove tournament this week and is slated to head to Gurnee on Saturday to face Warren High School in a non-conference game.

Elmhurst College to receive Earth Flag from SCARCE

Sustainability award to be presented at April 6th ceremony

SCARCE, an award-winning environmental education non-profit dedicated to creating sustainable communities, will present its prestigious Earth Flag award to Elmhurst College at a ceremony to be held Thursday, April 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lucks Conference Room in Cureton Hall on the campus of Elmhurst College. Representatives from SCARCE, the DuPage County Environmental Committee, and some of the College’s environmental initiatives will be in attendance.

The even is free and the public is invited.

SCARCE (School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education) gives the Earth Flag to educational institutions and schools of all kinds that have taken action to promote commitment to recycling and protecting the environment. The award recognizes educational institutions that support and implement innovative recycling and environmental sustainability initiatives. The flag is funded by the DuPage County Environmental Committee.

Over the past eight years or so, Elmhurst College has engaged in a number of activities that led it to earn the award, including educating students and staff about recycling; implementing waste reduction programs; and carrying out ambitious recycling programs. These programs include: • The College’s partnership with Chartwells, the College’s Food service provider, to develop a food scrap composting program [if !supportLists]· [endif]The Food Recovery Network, a volunteer-driven student organization that seeks to recover and donate unserved food in the student dining areas • Extensive recycling efforts spearheaded by the College’s Facilities Management department, which aim to increase the recycling of industrial materials used by the College, including carpeting, concrete, metal, motor oil, cooking oil, mattresses, fluorescent bulbs and a wide range of batteries • Campus- and community-wide recycling efforts, including the annual Recycling Extravaganza, during which an average 25 tons of electronics are kept out of landfills • Paper use and energy reduction programs.

According to a study conducted by Illinois REALTORS, 60126 is #41 on a list of 50 most expensive zip codes in Illinois in terms of median home sale price for 2016.

The most expensive zip codes in Illinois in 2016 were: #1 Kenilworth 60043, where the median sale price was $1,212,500;

#2 Winnetka 60093, $890,000; #3 Glencoe 60022, $882,500; #4 Hinsdale 60521, $785,000; and, #5 Lake Forest 60045, $720,000.

The median sale price in Elmhurst 60126 was $373,250 in 2016, giving it the #41 ranking on the list.

Hollywood connections to north shore communities The story about the study appeared in Property Shark (propertyshark. com), an online real estate blog for industry news, included the fact that the top three zip codes on the list had connections to Hollywood.

The median home price in Winnetka, hometown of Danny and Tess Ocean of Ocean’s 11, was $890,000 in 2016. Winnetka had even more

on-screen exposure as the setting for classic 1980s teen movies such as Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Glencoe’s New Trier Township High School was featured in the movie Mean Girls and is actually considered the 17th best high school in the nation. Glencoe’s 60022 zip code always a favorite location for North Shore native John Hughes who wrote and directed several movies in the 1980s.

Overall, real estate sales volume increased throughout the year, ending 2016 with 116,500 transactions – a 4.3 percent increase over 2015.

Sales prices also ticked up, reaching a median $184,000 and marking a 6.4 percent gain over 2015.

This spring, Elmhurst History Museum invites the public on a tour of America’s rich history of residential architecture in a traveling exhibit from the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. entitled “House & Home.” The exhibit embarks on a tour of houses both familiar and surprising, through past and present, to explore the varied history and many cultural meanings of the American home. “House & Home” provides a national story with a personal focus, exploring the remarkable transformations in technology, laws, and consumer culture that have brought about enormous change in American domestic life.

“House & Home” opens at the Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst, on April 7 through May 25, 2017. The exhibit is made possible through the National Endowment for the Humanities’ NEH on the Road initiative, and is organized by the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. and is toured by the Mid-America Arts Alliance. Exhibit Highlights “House & Home” tells the story of American architecture through a kaleidoscopic array of artifacts, video, photographs, and construction models.

The exhibit encourages visitors to explore how our ideal of the perfect house and our experience of what it means to “be at home” have changed over time. Items such as domestic furnishings, home construction materials, photographs, hands-on interactive components, and films contribute to the story.

The exhibition also showcases domestic objects—from cooking utensils to telephones—and traces how household goods tell the stories of our family traditions, heritage and the activity of daily living. Another key section of “House & Home” explores how different laws, historic trends and economic factors have impacted housing in America.

Sessions run one, three, or six weeks and culminate with largescale performances in a 400-seat, stateof-the-art theater.

In preparation for final shows, campers take daily classes in singing, dancing, and acting with occasional rehearsals in the evening. Harand Camp adheres to a non-competitive philosophy where “no man is an island” and everyone is a star. The goal is for every camper to develop performance skills while also building self-confidence.

In addition to the theatre program, campers take three periods of electives per day. Options include a variety of sports, fitness, fine arts and activity classes as well as additional performing arts and production electives. Evenings feature an exciting schedule of cabin nights, rehearsals, games, concerts and off-campus trips.

Campers also enjoy the comfort of modern facilities, residing in dorms overlooking Lake Michigan. Delicious meals are served in a renovated dining hall which features an extensive menu
