Volunteers turn out to support Matt Toole, family

This group of smiling people were just some of the friends and families who joined the 6th annual No Frills Fun Run that took place recently to raise money for the family of Matt Toole, an Elmhurst resident living with ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. More than 400 runners and walkers, nearly 100 more than last year, signed up for the event that raised more than $80,000 for the Tooles. Following the run, a post-party was held at HB Jones, where a capacity crowd enjoyed live entertainment, food, drinks, raffles, auction items and more. Since its inaugural run, the No Frills Fun Run has raised nearly $150,000; this year’s event raising the most funds yet.

Zoning Group rejects plan for Extended Care expansion Unusual deliberation meeting includes court reporter

In an unusual deliberation meeting on February 9th, the Zoning and Planning Commission (ZPC) rejected an expansion plan for the Elmhurst Extended Care facility on Lake Street east of York Street.

The next step is for three aldermen on the Development, Planning and Zoning (DPZ) to review the report of the ZPC, which is an advisory body, and either support the ZPC report or reject the ZPC report. Then the DPZ report will be sent to the City Council, which has the final vote.

The negative ZPC vote could be reversed as it was in a recent application for a day care center on York St. just south of City Hall.

It was unusual for the applicant to pay for a court reporter to provide a written transcript of the ZPC deliberation discussion. Normally a court reporter is paid by the City to provide a written transcript for a public hearing by the ZPC, but not for a deliberation.

Also, it was unusual for Commissioner Lisa Calloway to ask to take a five-minute break after about an hour of discussion.

She had proposed three stipulations about the hours of operation for a parking lot, a gate guarded parking lot and additional landscaping needed. That motion was defeated by a 4-3vote.

After the votes, Acting Chairman Frank Mushow commented, “at least nobody jumped across the table.”

In a 5-2 vote, the commissioners agreed with nearby residents of the area that among other things the expansion could negatively affect property values of nearby houses. The other positive votes came from Kurt Warnke.

The negative votes came from Dan Corrado, Susan McCoyd, Susan Rose, Jordon Uditsky and Mushow.

Chairman Darrell Whistler and Dave Garland did not attend the February 9th meeting.

Uditsky stated that although the applicant made a strong effort to reduce the impact of the expansion, commissioners have to listen to the people in the neighborhood.

“It is very much in the eye of the beholder. You cannot tell me that it would not affect property values.”

Rose, who said she had walked the block, commented that, “I don’t

think the petitioner made a case. It is disturbing to me that the three lots are in the middle of the block.”

Calloway said she would argue the opposite that the petitioner was careful to make the expansion fit in with the neighborhood.

“If I lived next door (to the expansion), I would not have a problem.”

The petitioner had purchased three single family homes and torn them down. The existing facility had been on the site since 1961.

The petitioner’s attorney, Scott Day of Naperville, stated that the nursing home is a residential use.

There may not have been a lot of frills, but there sure were a lot of friends and families who joined the 6th annual No Frills Fun Run that kicked off recently at York St. and the Prairie Path, raising money for the family of Matt Toole, an Elmhurst resident living with ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

More than 400 runners and walkers, nearly 100 more than last year, signed up for the event that closed out several months of No Frills Fun Run events that raised more than $80,000 for the Tooles. The run, depending on the participant’s choice, can be either a half marathon or a half-of-a-half marathon. Teams may also be formed to share mileage. Following the run, a post-party was held at HB Jones, where a capacity crowd enjoyed live entertainment, food, drinks, raffles, auction items and more.

Monies raised go directly to Toole, who in 2013, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a rapidly progressing, fatal neurological disease that attacks the neurons responsible for controlling muscle

movement, eventually impacting patients’ ability to speak, eat, move, and breathe.

“We have been blessed to have been selected as the recipient of the proceeds of this year’s event,” said Toole. “This really shows what can happen when a community comes together.”

The No Frills Fun Run is the creation of Elmhurst residents Dawn Wheatland and Kristin Morrow whose motto is a Margaret Mead quote that says, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Wheatland says that when she and Morrow present the money raised to the beneficiary families associated with the No Frills Fun Run, they “truly feel like they are making a difference.

“There’s no way Kristin and I could do this ourselves though,” Wheatland said. “It takes so many people. We have a donation committee, a selection committee, a safety committee…”

are other ways the No Frills team raises funds, such as vendor parties, local restaurant fundraisers, bowling night, and more.

“We have so many amazing people involved…they don’t just talk, they’re doers,” said Wheatland. “It’s mind boggling how people want to help.

“And the Tooles are an amazing family. They are unbelievably warm, great people. Not only do they deserve this, they need it.”

Toole no longer can use his arms or legs, but counts being able to talk and eat as blessings. The Tooles’ modest home has been modified to accommodate Matt, who requires a day-to-day caregiver.

Matt’s wife Karen says while insurance companies pay for hospitalization and doctors’ visits, they do not cover the cost of required daily care or any of the cost of home modifications, medical equipment, devices or supplies. Out-of-pocket expenses for an ALS patient can cost about $150,000 a year or more.

Still, with all the family is coping with, Karen said the day was “amazing.”

Her husband Matt says the No Frills Fun Run has been more than an event, rather “an experience.”

“The events leading up to race day were filled with joy and good times,” Toole said. “We cannot express in words how grateful we are…Fighting and living with ALS day to day is no easy task. [The community’s] support makes us stronger and keeps us fighting each day.”

But make no frills about it; Wheatland is the grateful one.

“The Tooles make me feel so humble and make me want to do something fantastic daily for someone,” she said. “Karen and Matt are such a big inspiration. They are easy to do this for.”

Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts update Volunteers sought for upcoming events; board saves big on studies

Last week, the Elmhurst Independent received a release with an update on the Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts (ECPA) and its latest endeavors. Later in the week, the Independent caught up with Board Chair Jeff Budgell who provided some more information.

The ECPA Board has launched a volunteer recruitment campaign to engage additional people to join the effort in bringing this state-of-the art performing arts facility to Elmhurst

and the surrounding community.

“As we enter into the next phase of our plan, we need more volunteers,” said Laura Michaud, one of ECPA’s board members. “The community support has been inspiring and we are eager to engage the talents, ideas and assistance of more people to help make this vision a reality.”

The ECPA initiative was formed in 2014 with the goal of building a center for music, theater, dance, and comedy anchored in downtown Elmhurst. Since then, the board and volunteer team have successfully estab-

lished a strategic plan, held multiple fund-raisers, and initiated dialogue with community leaders, organizations and residents.

The next phase of the project entails a feasibility and economic impact study, public relations, targeted fund-raiser events, grant writing, and spreading the plans and enthusiasm for the project.

“We received some good news about the studies,” Budgell told the Independent. “We thought it would cost $25,000 for a feasibility study and another $25,000 for an econom-

ic impact study, but we found a company who would do both studies for the $25,000 price tag. That’s a considerable savings for us.”

This volunteer recruitment campaign will help ECPA with four main events; Art in the Park kids tent; Broadway in Elmhurst on May 10; ECPA Summer Fling on June 10; and the Spotlight Gala on September 30.

“The talent in Elmhurst and the western suburbs is endless. We are hoping to tap into those who want to be part of this exciting project, said

“There are small tasks and greater responsibilities for volunteers, she added, and each will be a building block to bring the Elmhurst Centre for Performing Arts to our community.”

Symphony receives most grant dollars among list of 14 applicants City program supports community organizations

At a recent meeting of the Explore Elmhurst Community Grant Committee, the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra received the highest grant of $25,000 in the City’s community grant program. The money was to assist with costs associated with the first two concerts of the 2017-18 season.

Next on the list was $20,000 for the Elmhurst Art Museum to assist with costs for the new exhibit, “Hebru Brantley: Local Heroes.”

The total for all grants was $140,000.

The purpose of the Community Grant Program is to support community organizations that enhance Elmhurst as an engaging and fulfilling

place to live, visit and conduct business, said Chris Healy (5th Ward), chairman of the Public Affairs and Safety Committee.

He said the Grant Program’s funding priorities include organizations that introduce new or exciting events or activities to Elmhurst, have the potential to attract visitors to Elmhurst, and which demonstrate cooperation among Elmhurst organizations. All applicants have consented to implementing Explore Elmhurst branding into their marketing materials for their Community Grant sponsored events.

Funding for the Community Grant Program comes from half of the City’s Hotel/Motel Tax. Although grants have been awarded to organizations since 1990, the more formal Community Grant Program started in 1998.

Until 2014, the finance director reviewed the grant applications and made recommendations to the Finance, Council Affairs and Administrative Services Committee.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Assault

March 2 Dominic A. Ramundo, 39, of Elmhurst, was charged with assault at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North Ave. at around 12:41 p.m.

Police said a victim and Ramundo were involved in a driving situation, where Ramundo followed the victim into the pharmacy’s parking lot and came after the victim, trying to hit him with a hammer.

Battery

March 3 Michal Slusarz, 34, of Bensenville, was issued a citation for battery near Grand and Oak Lawn at around 9:39 p.m. Police said Slusarz had reportedly pulled his vehicle in front of the victim near the above intersection. Slusarz then exited his vehicle, approached victim’s car, punched victim in the face and drove off, according to police. Both subjects met again further down the road where they began to fight, police said.

March 7-March 8 A vehicle owner in the 200 block of S. West Ave. advised that the side of his vehicle was scratched sometime between the above dates.

The victim believes this happened while the vehicle was parked in the lot overnight. Approximate damage is valued at $1,500.

Feb. 23 A complainant in the 100 block of S. Prospect told police at around 8:34 p.m. that an unknown suspect had broken off a wooden post and American flag mounted on the rear bed of his truck. The flag was taken and damage was noticed on the sides of the truck.

Disorderly conduct, trespass notice

March 4 • Keshon L. Benford, 21, of St. Louis; Jackson A. Lindquist, 19, of Eau Claire, Wis.; and Anthony V. Moser, 21, of Racine, Wis., were each issued citations for disorderly conduct/ befouling property in the 700 block of S. Hawthorne at around 11:38 a.m. Police said Benford, Lindquist and Moser were urinating on a garage in the above location.

• Raymond Ferrara, 48, of Delavan, Wis., was issued a citation for befouling public property in the 400 block of Spring Road at around 5:12 p.m. Police said while in patrol, an officer observed Ferrara urinating on the wall of a restaurant.

• Jonathan Gunst, 23, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/public intoxication, in the 500 block of S. Spring Road at around 6:43 p.m. Police said that

• Tyler Schwartz, 21, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/public intoxication near Spring and the Prairie Path at around 1:47 p.m. Police said that while on foot patrol during the St. Patrick’s Day parade, Schwartz was found to be highly intoxicated.

March 2 Security at a hospital in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill reported to police at around 11:07 a.m. that a suspect had come into the emergency room to complain about treatment that a family member had received. The suspect allegedly threw a stack of papers at a nurse.

The suspect reportedly had previously made a telephone threat to come to the hospital with a baseball bat. Hospital staff did not want to pursue the matter but requested that the suspect not return to the hospital. An officer contacted the suspect and relayed the request.

Domestic incident, domestic battery

March 5 A 39-year-old Bensenville man was charged with domestic battery, criminal damage to property, reckless conduct and reckless driving near North and Route 83 at around 9:25 a.m. A victim told police after dropping off her children at her husband’s home she was traveling northbound on Route 83 when she noticed her husband’s vehicle following her. The victim then pulled into a lot in the 600 block of W. North Ave, and the suspect pulled up alongside her and reportedly began arguing with her. She attempted to drive away, but observed the suspect behind her again. She pulled into a parking spot, and the suspect allegedly sped up and struck the rear end of victim’s vehicle, causing significant damage. The victim left the area and called 911. The suspect fled the scene, but was located in Lombard.

March 6 • Neil Duncan, 47, of Orland Park, was charged with DUI in the parking lot of a hotel in the 900 block of Riverside Drive at around 2:26 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a call of a vehicle driving in circles on a flat tire

and rim in the parking lot, Duncan was found to be DUI. According to police, also on the above date at around 10:13 p.m., Duncan was charged with violation of a bail bond and criminal damage to property. Police said officers responded to a report that Duncan had caused damage to his hotel room. He had previously been released on bond from the DUI arrest earlier in the day, according to police.

• Maryann Harnica, 54, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI and endangering the life of a child in the 500 block of S. Saylor at around 3:15 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a call for a check on well-being, Harnica was observed pulling into her driveway and striking the bushes on the east side of the driveway.

Harnica was found to be DUI and had her 9-year-old son in the vehicle with her, according to police.

March 5 • Thaddeus Brooks, 55, of Westchester, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and DUI-drugs in the 400 block of Hampshire at around 4:13 a.m. Police said that subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious vehicle parked with its engine running, Brooks was found in the driver’s seat and displayed signs of narcotics use. Suspected heroin was located in the vehicle, according to police.

• Malgorzata Markowska, 29, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and I-290 at around 4:44 p.m.

• Richard Velazquez, 20, of Chicago, was charged with DUI-drugs, possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Michigan at around 11:45 p.m.

March 4 • Robert Shehan, 18 ; Rachel Valdiselli, 18; Sean Murphy, 18; Zachery Murphy, 18; Thomas Hartley, 18; Madison Grotto, 18; Madalya Schiller, 18; Mia Varzino, 18; Julianna Sonenberg, 18; Mia Nicosia, 18; Rayanne Shoeley, 18; Claire Frolik, 18; Anthony Gambino, 18; Nicholas Trapani, 18; Eric Gibas, 18; and Nicole Burr, 18; all of Elmhurst, were issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor in the 400 block of Verrett at around 1:50 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a call for an underage drinking party, each of the listed suspects were found to be drinking and under 21. Twelve (12) additional suspects were juveniles.

• Cody Hauser, 20, of Hoffman Estates, was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor and minor on a licensed premises at a pub in the 100 block of N. York at around 8:37 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a call of a disturbance at the above location, Hauser was found to be under the legal age to consume alcohol.

A complainant in the 200 block of Arlington Avenue told police at around 12:45 a.m. that her juvenile son left the house and was last seen walking towards the train tracks. Officers checked the area and located juvenile using his phone’s GPS location. The juvenile reportedly took off running from one of the responding officers. Juvenile was later located and cited for possession of drug paraphernalia, consumption of alcohol by a minor and a curfew violation. The juvenile was released to his mother.

March 3 • Sean Lejeune, 25, of Sandwich, Ill., was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near First and York at around 12:05 a.m.

• Lisa Lofendo, 48, of Elmhurst, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, DUI-drugs, endangering the life of a child, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, no valid driver’s

license, improper lane usage and disobeying a stop sign subsequent to a traffic stop near Walnut and Second at around 8:29 p.m. Police said Lofendo was found to be driving under the influence of drugs.

Harassment, threats

March 5 A victim in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill told police at around 10:35 p.m. that her boyfriend had contacted her, threatening to harm her. The victim does not believe that suspect would act on the threat, nor is she afraid of him.

March 2 A victim in the 600 block of Lorraine Avenue told police at around 4:11 p.m. that they and a suspect met on a dating website. Both parties have exchanged text messages and phone calls; they have never met in person.

The victim states she wants the suspect to leave her alone, and the suspect states that the victim was threatening him. The suspect will stop contacting victim and delete her phone number.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

March 8 Daniel Villarreal, 27, of Mundelein, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, no insurance and having one headlight subsequent to a traffic stop near York and I-290 at around 11:42 p.m. Police said Villarreal was found to be in possession of cannabis and a cannabis smoking pipe.

March 7 Leonard L. Branson, 23, of Hillside, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and given a warning for expired registration subsequent to a traffic stop near North and West at around 4:37 p.m. Police said a reporting officer approached Branson’s vehicle and smelled an odor of cannabis emitting from the vehicle.

The officer found a green leafy substance (suspected cannabis) inside Branson’s wallet, according to police.

March 6 Saul N. Ayala Chapa, 27, of Melrose Park, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Grand at around 5:56 a.m.

March 5 • Lisa Moriarity, 25, of Lisle, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia in the 100 block of Adelaide Street at around 2:38 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious auto, upon making contact, a reporting officer smelled a strong odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside the vehicle.

• Jacquelyn Preciado, 25, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Lake at around 8:14 a.m. Police said a search of Preciado revealed cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

York, told police at around 4:41 p.m. that a suspect described as a black male around 30 years old, 5-9 and 200 pounds, wearing a thick, black hoodie and jeans, attempted to purchase 10 $50 gift cards and a small strawberry shake with a My Vanilla credit card that was declined. The suspect then stated “something must be up with his bank” and left the store. The area was checked for the suspect with no results.

The victim stated that the wallet could have been taken at either a food store or a recreation center. • A complainant, the victim’s mother, told police that while at a gymnastics practice at a recreation center in the 600 block of N. West at around 2 p.m., her daughter placed her belongings in a locker located in the hallway outside the gymnastics area. The locker was closed but not locked. When the victim returned, a pair of boots were missing. An investigation is pending review of video surveillance.

March 2 A victim in the 300 block of S. Chandler told police at around 1:34 p.m. that at approximately 12:30 p.m., an unknown suspect(s) entered her unlocked vehicle and removed a wallet from it.

March 1 The loss prevention manager of a food store in the 600 block of N. York told police at around 11:39 a.m. that he received a phone call on the above date from the store manager stating a suspect described as an Hispanic male stole alcohol. The complainant checked the security footage and observed the suspect wearing a black coat, black baseball hat, black shirt, blue jeans and white gym shoes.

The suspect reportedly filled up a cart with vodka, covered them with his coat and exited the store without paying for them.

Feb. 28 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of Kearsage at around 12:03 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used her bank credit card account to make three phone/computer transactions. Two transactions were successful and a third transaction was declined. The victim has the physical card in her possession and has since canceled the account.

Feb. 25 A victim in the 500 block of S. Cedar Ave. told police at around 6:02 p.m. that she was contacted by Chase asking her if she had made a purchase at Dunkin’ Donuts. The victim checked her Chase credit card account and it showed 170 purchas-

es made at Dunkin’ Donuts on the above date. The victim learned from the Dunkin’ Donuts’ fraud department that the purchases were made from a phone app, using her credit card number. The victim’s Chase account was frozen and she was advised to check her credit score and other credit cards for unusual activity.

Nov. 2, 2016 A victim in the 100 block of Fellows told police that an unknown suspect used his Discover Card for a cash advance in Chicago on the above date. At that time, Discover flagged the cash advance as fraudulent and replaced the money. On March 2, Discover charged him for the cash advance again, since the victim did not return their phone calls, letters, or sign the affidavit they had sent him. Discover now informed the victim he would need a police report and a signed affidavit to continue their investigation.

March 8 Police said Joseph E. Riel, 39, of Sandwich, Ill., came into the Police Department at around 1:43 p.m. to turn himself in on a warrant, which was confirmed to be out of DeKalb County.

Elmhurst College Bands perform Winter Concert on March 12

The Elmhurst College Symphonic Band and Elmhurst College Wind Ensemble will present their annual Winter Concert on Sunday, March 12 at 3 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, on the Elmhurst College campus. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Under the direction of Ross Kellan, the Symphonic Band will open the program with “A Prelude to the Shining Day” by Japanese composer Yo Goto. A musical portrait of the wizard “Gandalf” comes next, from the first movement of Johan de Meij’s Symphony No. 1 – “The Lord of the Rings.” Sousa’s famous march “Glory of the Yankee Navy” will be followed by the music of British composer Philip Sparke with his “Fanfare, Romance and Finale.” The Symphonic Band will conclude its portion of the program with the exciting “Dance of the Jesters” by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The Wind Ensemble, conducted by James Hile, will open its portion with the power of the brass section performing “Fanfare for the Vienna Phiharmonic,” by Richard Strauss. The full Wind Ensemble then will be on stage to perform the second movement of Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1 “Jeremiah,” entitled “Profanation.” The Ensemble also will perform Aaron Copland’s landmark composition, “Appalachian Spring.” David Maslanka is a living American composer and his Symphony No. 2, which premiered in 1987, is one of the landmark compositions in his development as a composer and in the wind band medium. The Wind Ensemble will conclude with the finale movement from the symphony.

Each day it takes 12 minutes of my time. Five days a week – Monday through Friday. Six minutes in the morning. Six minutes in the afternoon – for a total of an hour each week.

A person could complete any number of tasks in six minutes. Sip a cup of coffee or make a piece of peanut butter toast. Read the newspaper – or at least skim the headlines. Check email. Tweet. Watch an inning of baseball or four minutes of the news and two of commercials. Post a selfie. Meditate.

Fill the car with gas. Send an “I love you” text to your honey. De-clutter the kitchen clutter bin. (We all have one.) Check the calendar to see what’s going on the rest of the week. Do sit ups. Run a mile – or half a mile if you are as slow as me.

Six minutes, times two for a total of 12 minutes each day. That’s how long it takes to drive my son to school. Six minutes – six minutes and 30 seconds if traffic is busy.

Some might think it mundane – a necessary chore that requires completing. Getting a kid from point A to point B before the first hour bell.

A morning drive, an afternoon pick up, day after day – sometimes in the sunshine, oftentimes in the rain and the wind and the fog and the cold on slippery roads.

I find the time anything but mundane. Relaxing, intriguing, enjoyable, informative, treacherous and even silent, but never mundane.

Even though our morning routine may be rushed and hectic, the six-minute drive unfolds at the same speed each day. It’s made up of moments I can count on to be filled with just him and me. It may not sound like much, but six minutes with a teenager can be significant. Or not. Depending on the day.

Sometimes we ride in silence, but it is a comfortable silence. Other times we chatter. We are more likely to be silent in the morning.

You can probably guess why. I often ask questions until I stumble on

a subject that warrants his attention. Some days he is more inclined to share than others.

Most of the things we talk about aren’t earth shattering or life changing. Results of a math test. The book he is reading for English. An upcoming sporting event. A Friday night school dance. Normal, everyday topics that anchor us to a normal, everyday life. And each other.

Each morning, when I drop him off, I rapid fire the same litany of advice: “Be kind to everyone. Work hard. Respect your teachers.” He pretends to pay me no heed, exits quickly and mumbles, “I love you,” before disappearing into the school.

Perhaps my words sink in. His certainly do.

My job won’t last much longer.

Next year he will blow out candles on a cake and have the privilege of driving himself to school. But for now we have our 12 minutes a day – six in the morning, six in the afternoon. It’s a time that could be perceived as an average commonplace chore that this mom is obligated to complete. Or it could be embraced as a gift. Take your pick.

I know how I see it.

There are a lot of different things a person could do with six – or even 12 – minutes. As for me, I’ll drive my kid to school. Any day of the week.

What an orientation to a new job in a new City!

Elmhurst Fire Chief Thomas Freeman had barely found the coat rack in his office when one of the biggest and most potentially dangerous fires in Elmhurst’s recent history broke out and burned for more than 18 hours. The fire, at VIP Occasions bridal salon and formalwear store on North York Road near Grantley, drew the attention of news outlets throughout the Chicagoland area.

At that incident, Freeman had the chance to not only show his own expertise to his crew, but also to get to know virtually everyone who works in his department and how they handle a difficult situation.

“That’s what we are,” Freeman told the Independent. “We are the people you see at your worst possible hour, we are there in your most desperate situation and we are there to help. We are there to assure a good outcome, whether it’s delivering a baby, bringing someone back to life, rescuing someone.

“It’s really humbling when you find someone who is clinically dead and then you are able to bring them back. It’s a real source of pride being part of Homeland Security, whose first-responders are considered second only to the military.”

His personal background and how it fits Growing up on the south side of Chicago, Freeman chased fire trucks as a kid, telling his parents at 7 years old he wanted to be a fireman. In 1970, he had the opportunity to get into a Fire Cadet youth program at the age of 15, which gave him a taste of what being a fireman is really like. “[Fire Cadets] was a very good program,” he said. “It offered the ability to see if this is really the career you wanted to choose. It gave direction to us at a very young age to help shape and guide our future.”

Every little boy wants to be a fireman when he grows up, isn’t that right?

“Yes, I guess so,” Freeman laughed. “There’s a joke we tell, if you say you want to be a fireman when you grow up, well, you can’t do both! You can be a fireman or you can grow up — not both.”

He turned serious for a moment.

“When I said I wanted to be a fireman, I knew it meant that you give your all to correct a terrible situation and hope that it works out for the best,” Freeman said. “We train for every possible eventuality and try to be prepared for anything. After all, we’re going out to help people we may not even know and when there’s any

The biggest announcement the Fire Chief shared was that the department will soon be back to full staff.

“On Monday, March 20, we’ll be giving the oath to new firefighters and at that time, we will be a full staff again,” he said.

On the personal side On the personal front, Freeman lives in Lisle, where he enjoys a relationship with a lovely lady named Bridget and her children Nick and Catherine. Freeman has a 28-year-old daughter of his own named Beth, who teaches English at Glenbard East High School.

“We are a bit of a melded family,” Freeman said. “We’re together but separate. We’re not married but we’re in a tremendous relationship — it keeps me on my toes!”

Freeman feels working in Elmhurst is a dream come true. He said he hopes to be here for many years and wouldn’t rule out relocating here should the opportunity arise.

“I feel very fortunate to end up here in the next phase of my life,” he said. “I enjoy working. I have no hobbies, I don’t hunt or fish and I’ve never swung a golf club. My only addiction is coffee — it’s always on — the last remaining vice in my life!”

His favorite places in town — no surprise — are places that serve coffee.

“I like Panera Bread, because it’s close by,” Freeman said. “But I was also very impressed with Fresh Start at the south end of town. We’ve had meetings there and the owner always goes out of his way to accommodate us. It’s one of the first places I ever went when I came here to Elmhurst and I was impressed so I continue to go.”

Freeman knows four of the former Fire Chiefs who previously served Elmhurst — Jeff Bacidore, Bob Gallas, John Fennell and Dick Swanson.

“I was always impressed by Swanson,” Freeman said. “He had a handle on code enforcement and fire prevention. He knew how to be proactive as well as reactive to situations. He showed that if you can predict it, you can avoid it.”

Here’s wishing the best of luck to Fire Chief Thomas Freeman in his position with the City of Elmhurst — and here’s hoping that large fires like the one at VIP Occasions are few and far between.

Still, Freeman loves being a firefighter and the experiences it has brought him over the years.

“I really feel blessed,” he said. “I love coming into the office, starting the coffee, it doesn’t ever feel like work.”

After working on the south side for a number of years, Freeman was recruited to work for the Fire Protection District in the Lisle Woodridge area prior to coming to Elmhurst.

Asked what surprised him about working in Elmhurst, Freeman had to think for a minute.

“I guess I was pleasantly surprised at how welcoming and personable the city and its res-

idents are,” he said. “By that, I mean internally here at City Hall as well as externally among the residents. They are so welcoming to outsiders, which I consider a sign of professionalism.

“Sometimes you wonder, in a City where everybody seems to have been here forever, why didn’t they promote from within? But you have to trust your City and the people who make the decisions. Everybody’s first priority is for the good of the City and if we all keep that in mind, in the end we get a better City, better schools, better neighborhoods, you name it. I enjoy that kind of energy. It makes you want to come to work and work hard for those for whom safety is paramount. As long as I’m here, I’ll do my darnedest to see that it happens.”

His goal in Elmhurst?

“I want to make a difference,” Freeman said.

Rotary Club to host gala fundraiser The Elmhurst Rotary Club invites area residents to a Gala Spring Fundraiser on April 29 at the Hyatt Lodge on MacDonald’s Campus in Oak Brook.

Elmhurst Rotary supports a diverse range of philanthropic programs and institutions, including District 205 schools, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, the Elmhurst Library, Park District and YMCA. Local men vie to beat Guinness World Record for pull-ups Proceeds will fund memorial to Elmhurst fallen soldier Joe Vanek

Two very patriotic men — Nick Janowitz, owner of Patriot Sports and Fitness in Elmhurst, and Jeremy Miller, a Patriot trainer — will each attempt to do 7,500 pull-ups in a 24-hour period in the hopes of breaking the Guinness World record which currently stands at 7,300.

The Pull Ups for Patriots fundraising event will take place in Elmhurst’s City Centre Plaza beginning on Friday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m. and will continue through Saturday, April 29 at 9:30 p.m. The public is invited to come out and observe at any time during the 24 hours.

“The event is a fundraiser for a charity called Pull Up Bars for Patriots, which has no affiliation with Patriot Sports and Fitness,” said Janowitz.

Founded by a former Marine, Pull-Up Bars for Patriots’ mission is to erect pull-up bar memorials to honor fallen service members while encouraging physical fitness across the U.S. Amazingly, this will be the second time Janowitz will challenge a Guinness World record.

When asked what motivates him, Janowitz talked about his background. “I’ve been infatuated with fitness and athletics ever since I was a little kid and I guess I’ve always wanted to be the toughest kid around,” he said.

He recalled at age 5, while other kids were watching cartoons, he would watch workout programs and follow along.

Janowitz took up wrestling when he was very young.

“I’ve been testing my physical and mental toughness ever since,” he stated. After achieving great success as a high school wrestler, Janowitz joined the U. S. Navy and became a member of the All Navy Wrestling Team, with the hope of making the US Olympic wrestling team. After wrestling, he became a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter where he was ranked 35th in the world.

After his fourth professional fight, Nick broke his hand and needed a hip replacement. Still he had a yearning for competition.

This sparked his desire to break a world record.

He initially looked into the pull-up world record, which at that time was 5,000, but considered it too difficult.

Instead he challenged the burpees record, because burpees had always been an integral part of his wrestling conditioning. The burpee, or squat thrust, is a full body exercise used in strength training which is done in four steps. From a standing position, the person squats on haunches with hands on the floor by the feet. In step 3, the person jumps the feet straight back and straightens the arms; then jumps the feet forward between the hands again, then returns to standing.

After contacting the Guinness World Records and receiving approval, Nick trained for two weeks and broke the burpees record of 10,000 done in 24 hours by doing 10,164 burpees in just 17 hours.

I can break this world record of 7,300 pull ups,” Janowitz said.

Jeremy Miller, Janowitz’s partner in this quest to break the pull ups record, just enlisted in the Navy on March 1 of this year. Miller’s goal is to become a Navy Seal. Janowitz beamed with pride at Miller’s ambition.

“Navy Seals are the ultimate warriors,” Janowitz said. “They are ordinary people trying to do extraordinary things. We only have one life and everyone is going to die someday -- why not live a life full of honor, courage and commitment instead of putting it on someone else. People say we support our troops, but what does that mean? The best way of supporting our troops is by being a troop.”

Both Janowitz and Miller are very committed to supporting our military. Not surprisingly, when Pull Up Bars for Patriots contacted Janowitz last year about getting involved or donating money, he decided to do both.

“I contacted the Guinness World Records and got approval to challenge the pull-ups record,“ said Janowitz. All funds raised at the April event to break the pull-up record will be used to erect a pull-ups memorial in Elmhurst to honor Sergeant Joseph Vanek of Elmhurst, who at 22 years old was killed in action in Iraq in November of 2007.

“Heroes like Joe are being forgotten along the way,” he said. “The goal of this fundraiser is to bring awareness to the real heroes of the world.

We take for granted what it means to give your life for someone else. Our servicemen and women put their lives on the line to protect our freedom.

So, if I can help honor Joe and other fallen service members who are our true heroes, I will.”

Janowitz identified another factor that motivates him to challenge world records.

“I want to be the toughest man on the planet,” he said. “Some people might think that sounds crazy but I think it’s crazy if you don’t want to be it. I’m a firm believer in showing rather than saying. A lot of people think they are tough or fit, but can they prove it? I wake up every day and try to become a better man than I was the day before.

“If I want to continue coaching and molding warriors like Jeremy Miller, then I better lead by example. If you want to be the toughest man on the planet than you better train like it. The 10,164 burpees and the hopefully soon to be 7,500 pull ups is a good start to becoming the toughest man

Guest speaker Michael Panther is from the war-torn nation of South Sudan, Africa, where war experiences and illness have left him in a wheelchair. In most parts of Africa, people with disabilities are usually excluded from community, schools and even work opportunities because they are considered to be of no value to society. This was his life...a life with no hope and purpose.

Then a missionary doctor saved Michael’s life through multiple surgeries and considered it a true miracle. The doctor enrolled Michael in school, eventually making him a part of his family. Michael started his first day of school in Kenya in 2007. Five years later, he graduated from high school.

The missionary doctor, acting as Michael’s mentor, brought him to the U.S where he attended Louisiana State University. Before long, he became one of the top student leaders on campus. He graduated last year with an economics degree and moved to Chicago to work for a Christian businessman.

Michael has a God-given passion to go back to Africa and serve people affected by disabilities. During his time in the US, he has worked with the organization Joni and Friends and other disability ministries at local churches. Michael is now in the final process of starting a new disability ministry called LIVING WITH HOPE to serve people affected by disabilities in Africa.

On Thursday, Feb. 9, IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) returned to compete in the Academic Challenge created and sponsored by the World Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) program. In the competition, held at Fenwick High School, the 14-member ICCP team finished third in the 700 Division, just short of qualifying as a team for the Sectional competition in March as only the top two teams advance. Due to increased enrollment at the school, the team moved up from the 300 division where they competed in 2016.

In addition to the 14-member team, ICCP had five “At Large” entries. These students competed as individuals, however, their scores were not included in the overall team score. They are eligible to advance to

place in Math. Both De La Cruz and Zhao will advance to the North Central College Sectional on March 16, 2017, to compete as individuals.

Elmhurst Park District upcoming programs Painting party at Pik a Pot n Paint Elmhurst Park District is having our very own painting party at Pik a Pot n Paint and you’re invited!

Join us for an afternoon of creativity, laughter and good times from 1-2:30 p.m., Friday, March 31. We’ll meet at Pik a Pot, 915 S. York Rd. You choose either a cereal bowl, salad dish, mug or dinner plate as your piece to paint and personalize any way you like. Fee is $22 residents/$25 non-residents and includes project, paint and firing. Once our projects are complete, they’ll be brought back to The Abbey for you to pick up. Age Well: Mind, Body, Spirit In this series, Active Older Adult fitness trainer Karen Augustyn leads four sessions on aging with awareness.

Explore issues surrounding aging including finances,

the next round of competition if their individual scores rank high enough.

ICCP also sent five junior varsity participants. With the sole purpose of exposing these sophomore students to the WYSE competition, they are not eligible to advance regardless of their individual score.

Each team creates sets of tests that increase in level of difficulty in a progression from regional, to sectional, to state final competitions.

Individual scoring winners for ICCP included Josh De La Cruz (‘18) who earned a first place in Biology, Demitra Del Fiacco (‘17) who earned a third place in Engineering Graphics, Alec Vasquez (‘18) who earned a third place in Biology, and Mark Zhao (‘18) who earned a second place in Chemistry and a third

Elmhurst Garden Club honors scholarship recipients The Elmhurst Garden Club honored its scholarship recipients at their annual “Meet the Scholars” luncheon held at the Wilder Mansion on Monday, March 7. The winners of the Mildred Hartney Scholarship presented short programs about their research, activities and interests related to sustaining and protecting the environment.

This year, more than $15,000 in scholarships have been awarded to college students who are majoring in an area related to the environment, horticulture, conversation, landscape design, and/or science education.

The current recipients include Larissa Root, Southern Illinois University ($3000); Liangyuan (Ashley) Yu, University of Illinois-Champaign ($3000); Maria Weston, Northern Illinois University, $3000; Jacob Matsche, Elmhurst College ($1250); Charles Pozen, Elmhurst College ($1250); and Lily Neppl, Purdue University ($800).

A total of $750 has been donated to the Morton Arboretum for scholarships for its Counselor-in-Training program, with a total of $115,000 given to worthy students in the area since 1999.

Funds for the above scholarships come from the proceeds of the Garden Walk and Faire, held the second Sunday of July.

Applications for the Mildred Hartney Scholarship, and for a York High School student to attend an exploratory program, are available on the Elmhurst Garden Clubs website epd.org. The next deadline is May 1, 2017.

Edward-Elmhurst’s Pam Davis honored with Career Achievement Award Chicago Health Executives Forum(CHEF), the largest independent chapter of the American College of Health Executives (ACHE), has honored Pam Davis, system CEO, Edward-Elmhurst Health, with its prestigious Career Achievement Award.

The announcement was made at the 41st CHEF annual meeting on February 28 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

“I can’t tell you how honored I am to be part of Edward Hospital and Edward-Elmhurst Health, and hearing from those in our community who’ve recognized the growth and quality of the healthcare we provide,” said Davis, who’s retiring on June 30, 2017.

“Thanks to so many people – my family, co-workers and many mentors – I’ve lived my dream job and most importantly, I hope, contributed to the health and well-being of the community.”

When Davis arrived at Edward in 1988, she quickly established a reputation as an innovative and dynamic executive.

In 2013, she led the effort to merge with Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and created Edward-Elmhurst Health, a three-hospital system that includes Edward Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital and Linden Oaks Behavioral Health.

The system has combined revenues of more than $1.3 billion, more than 60 locations across a service area of 1.7 million residents, nearly 8,500 employees and 2,000 physicians on its medical staff.

Under Davis’ leadership, Edward earned a reputation as a healthcare leader by providing advanced cardiac care at Edward Heart Hospital, stateof-the-art cancer diagnosis and treatment at Edward Cancer Center, world class stroke care through the Edward Neurosciences Institute in affiliation with Northwestern Medicine and mental health services through Linden Oaks. In addition, Edward has been a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence since 2005 and is one of only six hospitals in Illinois to have achieved Magnet status three times or more (the hospital was re-designated in 2010 and 2014).

Davis’ impact has been felt well beyond Naperville.

She brought convenient access to

high-quality healthcare for residents throughout the west and southwest suburbs, including the development of the 60-acre Edward Plainfield campus and Edward-Elmhurst Health Centers in Addison, Bolingbrook, Crest Hill, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lombard, Naperville, Oak Park, Oswego, Plainfield and Yorkville. Davis also led the effort

to launch Walk-In Clinics in Aurora, Bensenville, Franklin Park, Lombard, Naperville, Plainfield, River Forest, Romeoville, Westmont, Woodridge and Yorkville.

Davis was previously honored by CHEF/ACHE with the 2015 Recognition Program Service Award and 2009 Healthcare Leadership Award.

Brewpoint Coffee offers coffee in socially-conscious community space Owner’s vision turns into dream job with global perspective

It might look like any other coffeeshop, it’s got the wonderful warm aromas of coffee and creamy additions, the chalkboard of options and specials on the wall behind a smiling barista. The beautiful appointments of small round tables with chairs, a chest style coffee table, comfortable seating places, a bookshelf loaded with board games and other things to do while enjoying an hour or two in the relaxed comfortable setting.

Oh, and there’s that glass case full of sweets, fruit and other goodies.

But there is far more to the story behind Brewpoint Coffee that meets the eye and it’s clear in the enthusiasm of the owner Melissa Villanueva and her employees who all very clearly enjoy their jobs.

“Part of it is because they are part of something global, something so much bigger than just the coffeeshop,” Villaneuva told the Independent in an exclusive interview.

To tell her story, Melissa took a few moments to out of her otherwise busy day of keeping up the day-today operations of the current location at 124 W. Park Avenue in downtown Elmhurst while planning the opening of their next facility on the 600 block of No. York Road, opening in August. The grand opening of the new location is planned for Aug 15.

It began with a dream After graduating from Wheaton College, Maria took a soul-searching trip to the Philippines where she had a bit of a revelation, a feel of a calling, her true calling — it was not a big dream to start a coffee shop, it was more about creating a global initiative using coffee grown on farms in the Philippines.

“I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself,” she said. “As I have hired people to work in the shop, I have found many people who share the same vision, that is, being part of something bigger, making a difference on a global level. People really enjoy being a part of that.”

Melissa and her husband Angelo started Brewpoint Coffee “in all the wrong ways,” she said.

“We were six months into dating, both unemployed, and didn’t have a business plan in order,” Melissa recalled. “I had recently left my corporate job to do community work in the Philippines, while Angelo had been

pushing me to dream big and out of the box for months. Both these things made for a risky combination. I took his advice, and there, in a very hot house in the Philippines, Brewpoint Coffee was conceived.”

Melissa’s dream was about more than just coffee.

“It’s not just about good coffee for us,” she said. “It’s the fact that through great coffee we could have a foot in the door to build up the community, to form and support lasting partnerships, and inevitably provide fantastic service. These are things

A Q&A with Brewpoint Coffee How long has Brewpoint been in business?

Brewpoint Coffee opened its doors September 2014. That’s 2 1/2 years in business.

Has Brewpoint ever had an expansion or renovation in the past?

When we first purchased our business, we were eager to get our feet wet, so we turned it over in 3 days before we opened. Every day since then we have worked to make Brewpoint flourish. From getting new furniture to better and better product, our goal is to always be better than the day before.

We have not had an expansion like this before. This kind of expansion is taking us from being a coffee shop to a full fledge coffee company.

Why did you decide to expand the company now?

For us, we are dreamers that have quite an imagination. We think about all the different things we can do through our platform, but we can only do so much if we don’t grow and expand. We want to create full-time jobs. We want to have a positive impact on our coffee farms.

We want to have innovative, imaginative spaces that grow roots in a community. This vision has been a part of us since the very beginning.

As for timing, this was the fastest we could accomplish it.

Why did the city of Elmhurst invest in the expansion?

I wouldn’t want to speak on behalf of the city, but I could speak from what we voiced during our presentations to the city. Our vision is to create authentic community spaces and we want our platform to grow roots in Elmhurst. Aside from any plans we have in the future, we want Elmhurst to be our flagship location. Our current downtown location is a space FOR Elmhurst, but we want our next space to SHOWCASE Elmhurst and be a destination location for all the western suburbs.

What are the expansion plans?

We are renovating a 3,500 square-foot loading dock to be our coffee roastery and cafe. We are taking our business from being a coffee shop to a full fledge sourcing, roasting, retail coffee company. We have formed partnerships with three different regions to bring in ethically sourced, directly traded coffee that will make a positive impact to the farmers.

We will have a top of the line coffee roaster (Probat), coffee lab, and workspace to bring the best quality coffee. The best part is that the cafe will be able to see into roasting space.

Lastly, we will have a large unique cafe space for our patrons to study, hang out, and enjoy.

How long will the expansion take and when will it be complete?

We are estimating that we will be able to start roasting spring 2017 and the cafe will be open August 2017.

that both Angelo and I could devote ourselves to wholeheartedly.”

When she decided to move forward on the concept, something rather serendipitous happened.

Melissa went searching to find a commercial quality espresso machine and found the space at 124 W. Park instead! They purchased the turnkey operations about two years ago and built it up from $150/day in revenues to now 10 times that. She now has 17 employees, four of them full-time.

Time for expansion About a year ago, Melissa looked into finding a bigger space where they could roast their own product.

“We wanted to create a thoughtful socially-conscious community with a source for better quality coffee,” she said. “That’s what the space on north York will be.”

The new location is 3500 square feet, which will include space for a cafe, a place to roast the beans and a community space. She is working with RGL Marketing for the Arts and the Elmhurst Park District to use her facility for the betterment of the community.

“That’s the model we want to project,” she said. “We want to create safe community spaces.”

Not only do they get the beans right from the source in the Philippines, but also with Melissa’s involvement, she is able to make sure the farmers are getting a fair share, that there are good wages for employees, farmers, and everyone along the way who helps make the operation a success.

Goldman Sachs’ “10,000 Small Businesses” Melissa was invited to be a part of an initiative at Goldman Sachs called “10,000 Small Businesses,” a program for small businesses that “links learning to action.” Through the program, participants gain skills in negotiation, marketing, employee management, and other topics that can immediately be put into action.

They also receive the tools and professional support needed to develop a strategic and customized business growth plan that will take their company to the next level. According to the Goldman Sachs web site, 69% of participating companies reported increased revenues just six month after completion of the course; 48% increased their capacity for creating new jobs; and, 85% of participating companies are currently doing business with each other.

Timothy Christian’s LeGrand steps down as boys basketball coach

Will concentrate efforts full-time on middleand high-school athletic director duties

Timothy Christian’s boys basketball team will have a new leader next season.

Longtime head coach Jack LeGrand recently announced he is stepping down from the position to concentrate all of his efforts on the middle-school and high-school athletics programs at the school. LeGrand also is Timothy Christian Schools’ athletic director for both the middle and high schools.

LeGrand informed the school board’s Extracurricular Committee of his decision last week and also spoke to his staff and players.

“I love coaching and I love the relational aspect, but I want to do the very best I can and at times having the time for both positions can be very difficult,” he said. “I love the kids and the basketball program is in great shape. We’re very excited about the players returning for us.

There is a great future here.”

LeGrand noted the opening of the school’s new competition arena this fall will bring with it even greater responsibilities.

“There will be more demands and more responsibilities,” he said. “We want to do everything the right way here. It’s going to be a busy job (athletic director) and it’s a job I love doing. I love working with our players, coaches, administration and parents.

With this new facility opening, we’re super-excited about the athletic programs at Timothy going forward.

We’re going to have the opportunity to host more events. There are so many possibilities with it. We’re going to roll up our sleeves, get to work here and have some fun. We want excellence for our athletic programs.”

Timothy Christian Schools Superintendent Matt Davidson said LeGrand’s announcement is “a big loss for the basketball program and a huge win for the athletic program.”

“That’s ultimately what led him to that conviction,” Davidson continued. “We don’t have football here. Our high-profile sport is boys’ basketball and it always has been.

It’s a monster job. Jack determined the best thing for his role as athletic director is to spend more time and energy with our athletic programs.

Jack is the hardest-working coach we have. It’s a big loss. He’s a man of God and a great example for our boys. I really admire him for the de-

cision he’s made. His motto for the basketball program has been men of integrity. That describes Jack LeGrand right there.”

LeGrand was the head coach to Timothy for nine years and was former coach Jeff Powers’ assistant prior to that. In nine years, LeGrand amassed a 150-102 record (according to IHSA records). His 2009-2010 team won regional and sectional titles. Timothy teams had winning records in seven of his nine years at the helm, including this year’s squad that went 17-11 and reached a Class 2A regional final.

“I’ve been coaching 28 years and I love it,” he said. “I love the opportunity to coach. It always will be part of you. You can never turn it off. But in some respects later in your career and when you are older, you try and see where you can best serve your talents and needs and I love being the AD of these programs. It will be a different relational aspect working with the kids, coaches, parents and the community. The coaching staff for basketball is excellent and all the coaches at Timothy are great. I want to be there to help them any way I can.”

Davidson also noted LeGrand’s coaching expertise will not be stored in a closet just because he’s stepped away from the boys’ basketball program.

“It’s bittersweet for Jack,” he said.

“He loves coaching basketball and now he can coach our coaches, so he’s going to continue coaching in that regard.”

LeGrand hopes to have a new boys’ basketball coach in place in short order.

“It will probably go fairly quickly.

We’ll get some interviews going,” he said. “Some guys on our staff may be interested. We’re hoping to move fairly quickly out of fairness to the new staff. We want to make sure people are in place before summer.

That’s a prime time for development.”

LeGrand added the new arena remains on track for both basketball programs to play in it later this year.

“We weren’t counting on volleyball so we’re not sure there,” he said.

“Basketball, for sure, will have their seasons in that facility. We’ve had a great winter that’s allowed for a lot of work to be done on the new facil-

The York boys lacrosse team will have a new look.

Sort of.

While the Dukes graduated nine of 10 starters from last year’s team that went 15-6 overall and won the West Suburban Conference with a perfect 5-0 mark, York is far from hurting from talent that has been in the successful program in recent times.

Back for the Dukes are seniors Pierceson Mapes (defense), Gavin Vandenberg (midfield) and Cory Jaeger (midfield/faceoff), along with juniors Artie Renier (goalie), Mark Schneeloch (defense), Joe Chornij (midfield) and David Leonard (attack). Mapes will play next season at Augustana College.

include seniors Jack Redick (midfield), Bob Robertson (midfield), Steve Robertson (attack) and Jack Matthews (attack). New to the team is senior Nick Thomas (long-stick midfield).

“We have very talented lacrosse players,” said York coach Don Canfield. “These are guys who have great sticks and a great feel for the game.

We graduated nine of our 10 starters, so players are competing hard in practice with so many starting spots opening up.”

While the amount of starter turnover was large, Canfield has been pleased with what he has seen with the transition thus far.

“Both offensively and defensively we are starting over with a number of new players, but so far the group has been willing to work hard and absorb all the things we are trying to teach,” Canfield said.

York’s goalies include Renier and senior transfer student Finn McCarthy. “Artie is back for his third varsity season and is looking to make an impact right away,” said Canfield.

“He is athletic and refined in not only saving the ball, but in clearing the ball and playing outside the crease.

Finn also has looked very good in the first two weeks.”

Vandenberg and Leonard are also looking strong in the early going of the season at their new positions.

“Gavin is a 6-6 midfielder with incredible hands and a good outside shot,” said Canfield. “He is transitioning from attack where he started last year to midfield this season.

David played midfield last year and is transitioning to attack this season.

He has great moves and hands and has the ability to go both right- and

Elmhurst native Bieterman headed to Southern Illinois University High-school senior plays for brother and former York player at ACC

Elmhurst native Michael Bieterman’s college baseball selection came into focus rather quickly.

Bieterman, who played his freshman season at Timothy Christian and now is a senior catcher on the Aurora Central Catholic High School team, switched travel teams last fall to the well-known Top Tier organization.

“We got invited to come to a college showcase and then Southern Illinois called me the night after the showcase and I ended up going on a visit after that,” said Bieterman.

And now Bieterman will continue his baseball career at SIU. He noted he also had interest from other Division I schools.

“I went on some other visits and would really like it, but I would get back and I would say, ‘But there is one thing,’ he said. “On the way home from Southern Illinois, I loved it and there was nothing else to say about it. It was a situation where I couldn’t see myself not being here.”

To say the least, Bieterman is thrilled to have the opportunity to play Division I college baseball.

“This is huge. It’s something I’ve always dreamed about as a kid and as I was getting older and growing in my faith and as an athlete,” he said. “It doesn’t feel real. It’s a huge relief. You don’t know who is going to give you an offer, but you keep going and you work your way through it.

“Going into freshman year of high school, my hope always was to play college baseball. I knew I was capable, but I knew I had to go out and play and put in a lot of hard work. There have been a lot of good times and a lot of mental breakdowns. Going into senior year everything started to come together. The support I’ve received from my parents, my brother, my coaches and the high school has been huge.”

Bieterman said the coaching staff was one of the tipping points for him at SIU. “The coaches are top-of-the-class. They are class acts,” he said. “They are great guys. I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else. They made me feel like I was part of their family right away. It’s definitely one of the main reasons I’m going there.”

Bieterman transferred to ACC halfway through his sophomore year. “It’s been great athletic-wise and

I’ve grown a lot as a person,” he said. “I get to play for my brother (Sean Bieterman, ACC’s head baseball coach and athletic director), which is a different experience. It’s something most people never get to experience.”

Bieterman enjoys having the opportunity to have his brother as his coach. Sean Bieterman, a Villa Park resident, is a York graduate and the former head coach at now defunct Driscoll Catholic in Addison.

Additionally, he runs the long-standing Elmhurst Baseball and Softball League summer baseball camp.

“I know when I do something wrong he’s going to get on me, but I know he wants me to grow and he’s helped me grow as an athlete and as a person. It’s been great,” he said. “I can’t wait to get this season started. I think we’re going to have a great season and we have the ability to do some great things.”

Bieterman also heaped major praise on his parents, Rick and Sue, for their help over the years.

“I started out in Elmhurst Baseball and Softball League and my parents were my coaches and they’ve helped me out a lot,” he said. “They took the time to help get me better and get me everywhere. They put in a lot of effort and time and money into all of this.

Without my parents, I wouldn’t be where I am.”

Bieterman, who said he plans on majoring in sports management or telecommunications, would like to see how far the sport of baseball can take him.

“I absolutely would love to play beyond college,” he said. “I know that will take a lot more than just reps. It’s going to take a lot of strength and work. I will put in the work. It’s a definite dream of mine.”

York boys water polo team looking for even more success Seniors to play key roles in pool for Dukes

The York boys water polo team had quite a run a year ago.

The Dukes went 23-8-2 overall, finished in second place in the West Suburban Conference with a 5-2 record and advanced to the state quarterfinals.

A year later, the Dukes have their sights set on more high-level success.

Back for the Dukes this season are seniors Alex Marlott (driver), Parker Hicks (center, center defender), Nik Miklyukh (driver), Tim Delaney (center defender) and Ervin Prophete (driver).

Marlott is a returning all-sectional and all-conference performer.

Key newcomers to the team include junior driver Simon DeGrace, junior goalie Gary Derwin, sophomore driver Isaac Marlott and junior driver Billy Dyra.

“We have a lot of experience at the nucleus of our team,” said York coach Brian Drumm.

“Alex and Parker are three-year varsity starters and Nik and Tim were in the regular rotation all season for us last year. They can all score and play strong defense, which puts us in a nice position every game.”

Drumm noted the team’s counter attack has progressed the past few seasons. “It’s come a long way,” he said. “A lot of that is due to Alex Marlott. His younger brother,

Isaac, is now on varsity, so the two of them will certainly push the pace in transition.”

Drumm also likes how the team is shaping up on the defensive end.

“The boys have taken well to our team defense philosophy,” he said.

“We have some nice depth this season, so there will be a lot of different faces in the water all year. They play together well and understand their roles and responsibilities. We are confident defensively.”

Derwin is ready to tackle the season in goal for the Dukes. “Gary is super-aggressive and has excellent reflexes,” said Drumm. “His passing also has come a long way in the past year. We have total confidence in his ability in the cage.”

The coach also cited Brennan Sanders and Will Salek as two players to keep an eye out for.

“They were key members of our frosh-soph team that took second in conference last year,” said Drumm.

“Varsity games are a much faster pace than lower-level games and so far those two have demonstrated they are ready for this new challenge.”

York’s senior class once again has caught Drumm’s eye. “For the second straight season we have a very talented senior class,” he said.

“There’s been a changing of the guard. I’m excited to see our new senior class take ownership of our program.”

Depth also is on the Dukes’ side this season. “I love our depth,” said Drumm. “We have seven seniors and seven juniors and at least one sophomore on the varsity this season and they all have the potential to contribute to this team.”

York graduate Sullivan competes in NCAA Division II swimming finals Swam in three individual events and three relays in Birmingham

York graduate Shannon Sullivan had plenty of success at the high-school level as a three-time state qualifier.

She’s continued that at the collegiate level. Sullivan, a senior at Lewis University in Romeoville, swam in the recent NCAA Division II finals meet held in Birmingham, Ala. Sullivan swam in the 200 freestyle where she had a time of 1:57.97 and also logged a time of 5:05.60 in the 500 freestyle.

She did not qualify for finals in either event. Sullivan was selected to compete in the 200 at nationals after swimming a season- and career-best 1:51.20 earlier in the season.

Sullivan also was part of the 200 free relay team that finished prelims with a time of 1:35.58 and the 800 free relay team that finished 23rd with a time of 7:36.94.

On the fourth day of the event, Sullivan placed 36th in the 100 with a time of 51.75 and was part of the Lewis 400 relay team that tied for 21st with a time of 3:28.54.

Sullivan credits her improvement in the 200 to the coaching she’s received at Lewis. “I’ve had different coaching and it’s a different style that’s helped me,” she said. “Our grad assistant (Mona Groteguth) has been with us for two years and things fell into place and took off from there. She’s helped me get to where I am. Things have clicked

with her.”

Sullivan said she hasn’t changed much in the way of her 500 race. “I haven’t been able to get down to the time I was at freshman year,” she said. “I’m about five seconds off my best time.

With the 500, it’s just fun to swim it.”

And in the 100, Sullivan cites improvement in numerous parts of that race. “I’m having a better reaction time off the blocks and I have a better stroke rate and my under-waters are better,” she said. “My coach has helped me out a lot with the 100 and 200, knowing what I need to do in and out of the pool.”

This was Sullivan’s first foray into the NCAA Division II nationals. “It’s exciting and amazing to be here,” she

said last week from Birmingham. “It’s awesome because we have three other seniors and a freshman and it’s all their first time so that makes it that much more special when you are at something like that with your teammates. My teammates are the thing that sticks out about this team. We’ve all been through a lot together the last four years and they have been by my side through thick and thin. They have made the last four years something I won’t forget.”

Sullivan, a CSCAA honorable-mention scholar All-American last year, is majoring in marketing with a minor in social media marketing. In addition to enjoying her time in the pool at Lewis, she also raves about the academic part

of things.

“It’s really good at Lewis,” she said.

“I love my professors and the classes are very small. If you are struggling with your classes, the professors always are there to support you.

Throughout my swim career and same with academics, everything has been awesome.”

Sullivan, who also coaches with the Bullets Academy swim club out of Romeoville, admits as a student at York she wouldn’t have imagined being in an NCAA finals meet a few years later.

“I had always hoped for something like this but you never know if you are going to have a good enough season or not,” she said. “I hoped for the best and here I am. I’m super-ecstatic.”
