VanAken paints glowing picture of College at annual address President’s Breakfast draws business, community leaders
FOR THE ELMHURST INDEPENDENT
It was a bright sunny, albeit chilly morning on Saturday, March 10 when about 175 people gathered in the Cafeteria inside the Frick Center of Elmhurst College for the 18th annual President’s Community Breakfast, delivered by Dr. Troy VanAken. After guests enjoyed breakfast to the sounds of the Elmhurst College Jazz Combo, Distinguished Fellow and Special Assistant to the President Lee A. Daniels, former Illinois House Speaker, greeted the crowd and introduced dignitaries and special guests. Daniels made a quip about Dr. VanAken’s son Trey, who was in the office. “I know you’re applying for the MBA program here at Elmhurst College, Trey,” Daniels said. “Let me know if you have any trouble with your application process, I might be able to put in a good word for you with the College president!” Mayor Morley, VanAken show pride in partnership Before VanAken took the podium, Daniels introduced Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley, who shared good news that the City was doing well, especially due to the millions of dollars in new development currently taking place. He expressed how happy he was with the relationship between the College and the City, a sentiment that VanAken quickly echoed in his own address. “Elmhurst College plays a critical role in the community,” Morley said. “We are proud of the creative thinking that comes out of a liberal arts college.” “The college continues to build on its community partnerships that we are so proud of,” VanAken said. “For
example, our Recycling Extravaganza that we host together is coming soon. “We enjoy friendly cooperative relationships with the City police and fire departments. That goes a long way when we have issues that devel-
op here at the College. “And we couldn’t be more happy to be part of the Elmhurst Cycling Classic, which takes place right here around the campus and we are so proud to be a part of such a large event.”
Later in the day on Saturday, the Elmhurst St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place. VanAken said he would be busy in a Board meeting right after the breakfast, but he urged everyone to turn out for the parade, one of the City’s largest events.
“Our teams will be there,” he said. “The trolley will be bringing our students there, so if you see anyone in Bluejays gear, be sure to say hello, because they’ll be there.”
