City of Elmhurst announces green electricity aggregation program Following the passage of a March 2012 voter Referendum, the City of Elmhurst contracted to procure electric supply in a municipal electric aggregation program for residents and small businesses.

The City has continued to monitor the power supply market and recently was able to contract a program with MC Squared Energy Services, LLC (mc2) whereby residents and small businesses will pay exactly the ComEd rate and 100% Wind Green-e certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) will be purchased for the City.

This program will position the City to be designated as an EPA Green Power Partner Community at zero increased cost to the residents.

The program is for a 24-month term starting with meter read dates in May 2019 and ending at meter read dates in May 2021.

The cost of serving each electric account varies greatly, depending on usage patterns. Some ratepayer accounts will be served by ComEd supply service and others will be switched to the new supplier, mc2 and pay the exact same ComEd rate every month. mc2 will purchase RECs for the City based on the historical usage for accounts on mc2 supply and ComEd supply.

As such, some ratepayers will receive notice that their account will remain with ComEd supply service.

There is no need to opt out because their account will not be switched.

Other ratepayers will receive notice their service is being switched to mc2. A few weeks later, they will receive a letter from ComEd titled “Electric Supplier Choice Confirmation,” indicating the switch to

mc2 supply service. Those ratepayers may choose to opt out by calling mc2 at 888-266-0146 or returning the enclosed pre-paid postage card.

Residents in the Elmhurst Green Electricity Aggregation Program, whether receiving service from ComEd or from mc2 will pay the same rate. Notices of the program will be mailed March 7. There is never an enrollment fee, an early termination fee, nor any added monthly fees.

All Elmhurst residents that currently receive service through the following programs are eligible to Opt-In to the program, however please review your current contract terms and conditions before making this decision: • ComEd’s Hourly Rate • Alternative Retail Electric Supply Service • Net Metering Customers The program is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions. RECs purchased for the City’s energy consumption will be sourced from wind power generators located in the Midwest and are Green-e certified.

“Jake was a great guy. He was on the [Willowbrook] gymnastics team,” said local attorney Nick Tancredi. “My sons and Jake were in Scouts also.

Incident makes state-wide news After a long car chase on Illinois Highway 55, Brown’s car was rammed off the road by police near the town of Lincoln, about 150 miles from the Rockford hotel where the chase began. Brown, still armed, refused to exit his car. He was eventually arrested around 5 p.m.

Brown is now in custody and has been charged with first-degree murder.

More about Keltner Keltner was with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department for 13 years. He also worked as a fugitive investigator for the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Funeral services for Keltner were held on Tuesday and Wednesday at Woodstock North High School to accommodate the large number of expected mourners.

“We’re truly going to miss him,” said McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim during a press conference shortly after the incident, “He was part of a group of officers who chased the worst of the worst.”

City buys properties for storm water management

Elmhurst City Council passed two ordinances at the March 4, 2019 City Council Meeting authorizing the purchase of two homes located at 645 S. Swain Ave. and 641 S. Swain Ave. The City intends to use the property for future storm water facilities.

The purchased properties coincide with a long-term storm water management plan for the area that has historically been affected by overland flooding. The flood prone area was identified in a 2010 engineering study, which concluded that the City had few options for storm water mitigation due to the limited open space available. Project options included the storm water runoff into Salt Creek and the ability to create open space by purchasing properties.

The City has budgeted for property acquisition for storm water management purposes. Six homes need to be purchased in this area before a project can be planned. The City has purchased a total of three homes to date.

The City has completed nine storm water mitigation projects since 2015.

In 2019, the City will have spent over $25M in construction costs to help relieve 350 homes that have experienced storm water issues. Please visit elmhurststormwaterplan.org for more project information on all of the City’s storm water mitigation projects.

As the Legion turns 100 A conversation with Kevin Calkins, who recalls ‘moments of fear pretty much every day’ Between 1967 and 1970, 14 Elmhurst men lost their lives serving our country in Vietnam.

Although a plaque commemorating them was placed in Wilder Park in 1988, it was all but forgotten by 2015.

“The plaque had been placed in the ground and been mostly covered up by dirt and grass over time,” according to Vietnam veteran and Elmhurst resident Kevin Calkins. “Most of our local veterans didn’t even know it was there.”

Calkins, a member of the Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187, led an effort in 2015 to raise the plaque up off the ground and place it on a granite base. The newly improved memorial not only raised the plaque, but also raised the profile and awareness of those Elmhurst men that were lost in the Vietnam War. Calkins and his friends raised some of the estimated $10,000 required to complete the project, with additional help coming from the Elmhurst Park District, the City of Elmhurst and the Troost Monument Company.

The Memorial was re-dedicated on Veteran’s Day in 2015 – a proud moment for local veterans and the families of those lost in Vietnam.

Dan Gibbons, founder of the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, named Calkins honorary starter at the 2017 event, recognizing his role in the re-dedicated Memorial and his service to our country.

About Calkins’ time of service It was January, 1968 and Kevin Calkins received an official letter from the Selective Service. The letter started with the dreaded, “Greetings,” a dead giveaway his life was about to change. The letter was a notice he was being drafted by the United States Army and, with the war being waged in Asia, he would likely be shipped to Vietnam. After 12 weeks of basic training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Calkins was sent to Fort Sill, Okla., to train as an Artillery Surveyor.

Four months later, Kevin Calkins found himself and his comrades in the central highlands of Vietnam. There was little time to acclimate, as soldiers were mostly on 12-month tours and one group would arrive as the other was head-

ing home. Calkins shared that “when you were sent to Vietnam, you replaced somebody immediately.”

His unit was responsible for scouting and surveying locations to place large artillery, in particular, a 2-ton Howitzer whose 105 cannons had a range as far as seven miles. His team would generally be transported via helicopter to the area to be surveyed and they would determine how the cannon should be placed. Sometimes, they would leave the area before the artillery team would place the Howitzer and other times, they would still be present, even after the shells started flying.

Calkins frequently heard enemy artillery and, like his fellow soldiers, had moments of fear pretty much every day. He made some great friends in the service and lost some who were killed in action. He witnessed some acts of bravery and grew to trust those serving alongside him, like no others. He rarely talks about his experience in Vietnam with anyone except his buddies who served there with him.

A soldier returns home Twelve months and one day after arriving in the war zone, Calkins was sent home to the U.S. His tour was over, but the mark the experience left on him will never disappear. Calkins said he was only in Vietnam for one year about 50 years ago, but “it’s something you think about every day.”

Ten years ago, he and others from his unit, began getting back together each year with their first reunion being held in Chattanooga,

Tennessee with less than 20 attendees. More recently, annual reunions have drawn as many as 100 veterans including their wives. They catch up, remember old stories of their service, and share new stories of their lives after Vietnam.

“You want to see these guys,” Calkins said.

Calkins joined the Local 134 IBEW as an apprentice electrician after his military service.

He was an electrician for 41 years, before retiring. He has belonged to the Chicago chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America for nearly 40 years and has been a member of the Elmhurst American Legion THB Post 187 for the past 30 years. Calkins finds the Post a great place to socialize with others who have served in the military. At the Post, he has formed friendships with other Vietnam veterans, as well as World War II, Korean War and Gulf War veterans. When he first joined the Post, he even got to know a couple World War I veterans.

Calkins enjoys spending time with his wife Mary Ann and his two daughters (both raised in Elmhurst) and four grandchildren. Kevin Calkins, thank you for your service to our country and our community! Feb. 24 A victim at a restaurant in the 600 block of W. North told police at around 1:05 p.m. that related she was at the restaurant having drinks with friends and was struck in the shoulder area by an unnamed suspect. The victim declined to investigate the incident or pursue charges.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement

March 3 A victim in the 100 block of W. Butterfield told police at around 12:35 p.m. that she parked her car in the parking lot of Timothy Christian school. Upon returning a few hours later, she noticed two cracks in her front windshield and a scratch on the rear quarter panel of her car. The victim did not wish to pursue an investigation or criminal charges.

March 6 A complainant in the 300 block of S. Sunnyside told police at around 4:37 p.m. that she and the suspect

were no signs of injury and due to conflicting stories, no arrests were made.

While in another room, the suspect threw an object against a wall. Both parties stated nothing physical occurred between them and they were separated for the evening.

Feb. 28 A 21-year-old Villa Park man was charged with domestic battery and assault in the 200 block of W. First at around 9:48 p.m. A complainant told police that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect threw her down, grabbed her and held her down. The suspect then removed two knives from the kitchen and exited the apartment. While outside, the suspect screamed suicidal and homicidal statements towards the victim, according to police, and refused to speak with officers.

Police said a former employee at a tap room in the 100 block of E. First didn’t feel he was paid properly and began to pack up items to remove from the establishment. A verbal argument occurred and the complainant called the establishment’s owner. The suspect left the scene without any of the property.

A complainant in the 100 block of Fellows Court advised at 1:33 p.m. that she was involved in a verbal argument with the suspect, and the suspect threw a shoe which struck the victim in the mouth. There

March 7 Tina N. Porter, 37, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, speeding, no valid driver’s license, failure to signal and no insurance, while Charles C. Crosby, 30, of Chicago, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of open alcohol in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 1:46 a.m.

March 2 Jose Diaz, 36, of Bellwood, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued citations for illegal transportation of alcohol and no seat belt, while Kenneth Marrero, 37, of Chicago, was charged with obstructing, no valid driver’s license, improper lane usage and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near North and West at around 11:42 p.m.

Feb. 27 A victim in the 800 block of N. Eastland told police at around 8:28 a.m. that she previously filed a harassment through electronic communication report against the suspect, but continues to be harassed by her. The suspect reportedly sent a harassing email containing vulgar language and threats to the victim.

Feb. 27-Feb. 28 A complainant in the 400 block of W. Wrightwood told police that he observed what appeared to be droplets of blood on the asphalt near a dumpster. Upon looking inside of the dumpster, he saw a trash bag with blood splatter. Officers determined that an unknown person(s) disposed of a deer carcass inside of the dumpster.

A victim told police that he received a bill from Verizon Wireless and discovered that an unknown suspect used his personal information to fraudulently open the account. The victim notified Verizon Wireless and contacted the credit bureaus.

March 5 Nycole D. Stoudt, 36, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:34 p.m. Police said Stoudt left the store without paying for a pair of earrings.

March 3 Laura Batiz, 19, of Joliet, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 7:29 p.m. Police said Batiz concealed merchandise in her purse and left the store without paying.

Police said a victim in the 400 block of West lent an unnamed suspect cash. When the victim asked for his money back, the suspect had the victim open a credit card in the victim’s name. The suspect then had the victim make several purchases for him using the credit card.

Patrick Thomas Mulhern, 23 Patrick Thomas Mulhern, a longtime resident of Elmhurst, passed away on February 22, 2019, at the age of 23. He was born on September 20, 1995, the beloved son of Jim and Claudine. Loving brother of Elizabeth (Ken) and Mary Ann. Cherished uncle of Colin Berg, Sydney Berg, Haley Katele, and Alexis Katele. Fond cousin to many. Patrick graduated from Clarewoods Academy in Wheaton. He loved music, especially Lady Gaga and Madonna.

Wayne “The Legend” spent most of his childhood in Joliet. His family moved to Morris during his junior year in high school where he met and married Mary Lou, his wife of 60 years. He will be remembered for his fierce competitive nature and his service to our country as a P51 fighter pilot in WWII. Illinois has lost a congressional seat every decade since the 1930s, falling to its current number of 18. With the estimated state population declining over the last five years, however, Illinois is all but guaranteed to lose another congressional seat after 2020.

But the state also faces the loss of an additional seat—not because of people leaving, but because of people not responding to the census.

“We think we’re so close to losing two that it’s within the margin that will be controlled by the potential undercount,” Young said.

Election Data Services, a consulting firm that analyzes congressional seat changes using the Census Bureau’s complicated formula for reapportionment, issued a report in December 2018 backing this up.

Assuming the loss of one seat already, Illinois is holding onto the 435th Congressional seat by a mere 25,149 to 53,598 people, according to EDS. That’s less than half of 1 percent of the state’s population, a number that, based on county-by-county response rates, could reasonably be undercounted in the next census.

Illinois’ congressional maps will have to be redrawn after the census to account for one lost seat. If a second seat is lost, it would require even greater changes decided through a deeply partisan redistricting process carried out by state lawmakers that always favors the party in power.

All three branches of the state government are currently controlled by Democrats.

Illinois would also lose two electoral votes, weakening its strength in future presidential elections.

New exhibit explores the Presidential Political Posters ‘Sign of the Times: 1844–2012’ opens March 28 at History Museum

Historically, the hardworking American political poster has been hiding in plain sight, attempting to catch the eye and capture votes through the use of powerful visual language. In a survey that spans the life of these ubiquitous messengers, “Sign of the Times: The Great American Political Poster 1844–2012,” showcases a variety of poster styles, design trends, and printing technologies that have been employed to create these powerful campaign messengers over a span of 168 years.

This national touring exhibit will be open for a one-month run from March 28 through April 29 at the Elmhurst History Museum, located at 120 E. Park Ave. The exhibit features 50 high-quality reproductions of some of the rarely-seen presidential campaign posters in our country’s history.

Hand-colored portraits of presidential and vice-presidential candidates were first printed for the 1844 race between Whig Party candidate Henry Clay and the eventual winner,

Montgomery Flagg. The international style that pervaded the 1950s rarely affected the campaign poster, an era in which cheap letterpress and offset “boxing style” posters were de rigueur. However, a creative new design element that became popular at the time was the “floating head” poster, and several for candidates Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Goldwater are included in the exhibition.

Through time, the American political poster has been sorely neglected as an art form and has played a minor cultural role despite its effectiveness in conveying a political message to millions of voters often through the skillful use of visual communication.

“Sign of the Times” has made every effort to bring eye-popping political graphics to the forefront and show the great American political poster as art. “Sign of the Times” was curated by Hal Wert, Ph.D., collector and professor of history at Kansas City Art Institute, and organized by Exhibits USA/Mid-America Arts Alliance.

Garden Club hosts annual scholarship luncheon Eight students receive financial help for advanced education

Celebrating the 20th year of its Mildred Hartney Scholarship Program, the Elmhurst Garden Club (ECG) recently awarded $20,000 in scholarships to eight college students and an exploratory scholarship to a York Community High School student. On Monday, March 4, the scholars were honored at EGC’s “Meet the Scholars” luncheon held at Elmhurst’s Wilder Mansion.

This year’s scholarship recipients are Ronalyn Irle, College of Du Page; Jack Zinnen and Lauren Rudloff, University of Illinois-Champaign; Megan Franklin, North Carolina State; Alexander Horvath, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Emma Boehm, University of Minnesota; and Alexandra Baczynski, University of Illinois at Chicago, all of whom are pursuing course work related to environmental studies, conservation, horticulture, landscape design, biology, botany or science education.

Additionally, Abigail (Avi) Clancy, a sophomore at York Community High

School, was awarded an exploratory scholarship which allowed her to attended a summer session at the University of Michigan on “Life, Death and Change: Landscapes and the Human Impact.”

After the luncheon, each scholar presented a short program about his/ her research, activities and future interests related to the environment. Sharing the sentiments of many other EGC members at the luncheon was Jean Baldikowski, ECG Scholarship Chairperson since 2012.

“This year’s scholars were particularly remarkable,” she said. “Their presentations were impressive, carefully prepared and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting each scholar and appreciated their commitment to the environment.”

Members came away with the assurance that these young adults will be thoughtful caretakers of our planet.

About the recipients Highlights included Lake Villa native senior Emma Boehm, who presented “The Complexities of Plant Responses to the Environment” and shared findings from her research on how plants respond and adapt to climate change and extreme envi-

ronments. Also, Boehm shared her experience as a NASA summer intern where she worked with many engineers and scientist at the Kennedy Space Center on a program to grow leafy greens for long duration in space missions. Boehm is currently applying to Ph.D. programs in Ecology.

Doctoral student Jack Zinnen who hails from Springfield discussed his dissertation research on the endangered Phlox, including his effort to protect the few existing plants and further future propagation by cultivating seeds and distributing them to other nature centers. This long-term partnership will include a butterfly garden, certified Monarch Waystation, and the development of a greenhouse program. Members also conduct Garden Therapy meetings at the Lutheran Evangelical Adult Day Care Center where participants make floral arrangements to take home and enjoy.

EGC meets the first Monday of every month at the Wilder Mansion and always welcomes new members.

O’Dwyer will take over as Scholarship Chairperson next year, after Baldikowski’s seven years of outstanding stewardship and dedication to the program.

To qualify for a scholarship, the students must reside in Illinois, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and at a minimum be entering their junior or senior year of college. Additionally, the EGC offers an “Exploratory/Experiential” scholarship to current York High School freshman, sophomore and junior students. This scholarship allows the recipient to participate in an educational experience related to conservation or the environment. Applicants are rated on the basis of their GPA, courses they have taken related to the club’s mission, relevant activities and volunteer work, their statement/letter, and their letters of recommendation.

Previous recipients may reapply.

Scholarship applications are currently being accepted and are available on the EGC website --selmhurstgardencllub.org. The deadline for both the college and York high school exploratory scholarships is May 1.

Both gentlemen have run the JA Titan simulation with York’s Honors Business Management classes since 2008.

JA Titan is an online business simulation where students run virtual companies and make decisions regarding price, marketing, research and development, capital investment and charitable giving.

These decisions are changed up to 12 times to simulate a 3-year business cycle.

The computer then ranks the companies by their total amount of retained earnings.

“It’s a great simulation and Rich is awesome relating his experiences with our students. We are both very proud to represent York and the Elmhurst community,” Jim said.

New Elmhurst youth football program stresses safety importance Elmhurst Bears to debut with two divisions

There’s a new youth football organization in Elmhurst.

Meet the Elmhurst Bears who are debuting two Pop Warner-sanctioned divisions at the Mitey-Mite (ages 8 and 9 with a maximum weight of 100 pounds) and Junior Pee Wee (ages 9-10 with a maximum weight of 115 pounds and 11-year-olds under 95 pounds) levels.

And Bears vice president of operations Jeff Judycki stresses the organization is looking to change the way youth football is done everywhere through five core principles that include coaching, player safety, community partnerships, economical fees and education.

In terms of coaching, Judycki noted players will be coached by professional individuals with bona-fide football playing and coaching backgrounds.

“Our coaches are there to develop football players,” he said. “They will give every child an equal opportunity to grow and develop, and as a larger body of work they will develop the program.

“We will develop every child who steps on the field at all levels with no favoritism. Our board is made up of local business professionals who want to see the way football is done at the youth level change, which is why they will not be any part of the football operations. That will be left to the experts, the coaches. We will have coaches developing coaches who will ultimately develop players from second through eighth grade.

We are one team with one message and one way of doing business.”

Judycki stressed safety will be another major cornerstone of the Bears’ program. To that point, the organization has invested heavily in equipment, particularly, Riddell helmets that feature technology that helps detect potential dangerous blows to the head.

Judycki said the ITT technology in the helmets is implanted in only two other youth programs in the state of Illinois. “Outside of our technology and equipment, every coach will need to go through a rigorous training course designed by Riddell to ensure they understand how to utilize this technology to the best of their abilities,” he said.

“Investing in safety is our top priority. We believe it’s the most important piece here. These helmets will allow us to see in a practice or

game whether or not a potentially devastating hit to the head has occurred. This technology will teach coaches to be better coaches. This is a huge safety measure that we cannot emphasize enough. We’re taking the extra steps necessary to ensure the safety of our kids. And with our coaches in place, they are teaching these kids to play the game safer. They are being taught the right way immediately.”

Also on the safety front, Elmhurst Bears teams will play using two amended rules that include the abolishment of the three-point stance, which now becomes a twopoint stance. “This will allow players to keep their heads up while still learning how to block and tackle,” Judycki said.

Bears players also will play in an environment where kickoffs will be eliminated. “You have players going a million miles an hour at one guy with the ball who may not be physically aware of his surroundings,” Judycki said. “It’s another measure to keep our kids safer.”

Judycki said the team is looking to engage in meaningful relationships with community businesses, which for example includes the sponsorship of one of the Riddell safety technology helmets.

“Several local businesses have already stepped up seeking ways to help the program,” he said. “Our goal is to build a great program for our community for 2019 and beyond.”

The Bears, Judycki noted, also are focused on providing opportunities for kids to learn the game of football at affordable price points.

The Bears fee is $299 per player.

“Our pricing gives you everything as listed, professional coaching, fields, equipment, the technology and there is no fundraising or volunteer work to raise funds,” he said. “We will obviously engage the kids to do volunteer work that helps the community.

“Football shouldn’t be expensive and we are committed to offering a low cost to join and play the sport our community loves.”

Judycki said strategic partnerships with national and local businesses will help deliver the affordable program fees. “Our goal is to offer a signup fee 20-60 percent lower than other local programs,” he stated. “This is unheard of with the initial capital investment for top-of-the-line equipment for our players. You won’t see that anywhere else for what these kids will get. We’re about affordability and not eliminating anybody because of cost. We don’t want anybody to go without who is interested in the Bears. We will make it happen.”

And Judycki said the Bears will

not only be about football. Academics also will be stressed and celebrated. “We will put academics first,” he said. “Pop Warner ensures every player who wears its shield maintains a high standard in the classroom as well as on the field.

Judycki noted Pop Warner is the only youth football program locally that requires academic standards be met to play and rewards those players who go above and beyond in the classroom. To that point, Judycki explained the Bears will have a designated academic chair as part of its board of directors, ensuring “standards are met and those who exceed are rewarded,” he said.

“Report cards get checked at every level and academic awards are

earned regardless of football talent. A leading goal of our program is to have every player who wears our uniform be recognized for their academic achievements at the regional Pop Warner Little Scholars awards banquet.”

Judycki sums up the team’s overall mission is to simply do things differently. “Our offering is unique and very hard to replicate,” he said. “If we have more kids playing football while providing them a safe and fun environment to learn the game from our area’s brightest coaches, we have succeeded. You will not find a program in Illinois offering what we are willing to put up for our kids to ensure their safety and success.”

Defense in depth

Judycki describes the team’s inaugural push here as being in the crawling phrase. “In 2019 we want to make sure we get it all right,” he said. “We are obsessed with the details. We are obsessed with providing the highest level of experienced coaching for our kids. We’ll have two levels this year and we’ll see where we go from there. We’re not trying to hurt anybody else’s programs. We’re trying to grow ours.

This is all about the development of the kids.”

Registration for the Bears currently is open and will run until July 1.

York boys basketball team wraps up historic season Dukes win school-record 29 games against a loaded schedule

While the York boys basketball team’s season did not end the way it wanted, its overall body of work was a record-breaking success.

The Dukes dropped a tough 5856 contest to Chicago Whitney Young in the semifinals of the Class 4A Proviso West sectional in Hillside. Whitney Young lost to Chicago Curie in the sectional final.

“It was a great game,” said York coach Vince Doran.

York led 16-3 at one point, but suffered a big blow when veteran standout Nick Kosich was lost to injury in the second quarter.

“Despite losing a ball handler like Nick, our guys played really well,” said Doran. “They overcame a lot.

We had our chances in the game.”

Leading the charge for York was Sam Walsh, who poured in a career-high 29 points. “Sam was unbelievable,” said Doran. “That was the best game he played in his career. He was dominant. He hit two 3s for us and almost single-handedly kept us in the game.”

Doran also praised the strong York fan turnout at Proviso West.

“We had a tremendous crowd,” he said. “The crowd size was ridiculous. We had great support.”

York finished the season at 295, won two tournament championships and the program’s fifth regional title in seven seasons under Doran’s direction. The 29 wins are the most in program history.

“These kids are amazing,” said Doran. “We will miss them. They accomplished so much. This is a team that could have went downstate and they proved that even without Nick.

They played incredibly. They had an incredible record against teams, some of which are still playing. It’s cool that they beat Oak Park, which had given us half our regular-season losses. We beat them convincingly for the regional title in front of our home crowd. That was such a cool thing for the kids.

In the loss to Whitney Young, York led 16-5 after the first quarter and 29-24 at halftime. Whitney Young outscored York 19-14 in the third quarter and 15-13 in the fourth.

Walsh had those 29 points on 12 of 22 shooting from the field and a 3-for-4 effort from the free-throw line.

He also made both three-point attempts. He had 15 rebounds to go with the 29 points.

Nate Shockey and Erik Cohn each scored eight points, while Kosich

had six points on two 3-pointers.

Shockey had two steals. York shot 9 of 23 from the 3-point line (39.1 percent) and 38.2 percent from the field for the game. Whitney Young shot 38.3 percent from the field.

Whitney Young was 18-for-24 from the free-throw line, while York was 5 of 7.

Cohn sank 13 three-pointers in the sectional final round of the Class 4A state 3-point shooting contest to advance to the state finals. He’ll shoot in Peoria at the Peoria Civic Center’s Carver Arena this weekend in the 4A finals. His 13 three-pointers were good for first place in the Proviso West competition.

While the York boys lacrosse team graduated a good chunk of seniors from last year’s team, it doesn’t mean the cupboard is bare.

Coach Don Canfield has plenty of players returning from last year’s team that went 10-11-1 and tied for second in the West Suburban Conference with a 3-2 record.

“We are young and athletic,” said Canfield. “We graduated a large senior class last year, so this group has the opportunity to define themselves and their season. Guys are competing at every position for playing time.”

Top returning players for the Dukes include seniors Sam Walsh (defense), Joey Cornell (goalie), Nick Bigenheimer (defense), Aidan

Gaughan (midfield), Brendan Feeney (midfield), Billy Paschen (attack) and Mitch Holmes (midfield-attack), along with juniors Gavin Reiger (midfield) and Harrison Proud (attack), as well as sophomore Josh Temple (long-stick midfield).

Key newcomers to the group include sophomore Charlie Toreja (faceoff specialist) and freshman Ryder Maston (attack).

Walsh is a returning first-team all-conference selection who will play the sport at Division I Merrimack College.

Canfield said York has many options on offense.

“Not sure yet who will be our goto offensive creator, but we have a lot of talent that works well off the ball,” he said. “Hopefully that movement will generate a lot of opportunities for goals.”

Canfield also is excited about his team’s defensive prospects, led by goalie Cornell and defender Walsh.

“I’m very confident in the play of senior goalie Joey Cornell, who commands the defense and tells everyone what to do,” the coach explained.

“Sam Walsh is a big, rangy defenseman who has experience covering the best attackmen in the state.”

Canfield said York must limit unforced errors and win the groundball battles in order to be successful.

Canfield added the WSC should be a competitive race once again. “It’s always a battle in our conference and once again we look to be right in the mix with Glenbard West, Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central,” he said.

York was scheduled to open the season earlier this week with contests against Downers Grove North and Lyons Township. The Dukes are slated to face Glenbard West Saturday in Glen Ellyn. The Dukes next scheduled home contest is Thursday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m. against Stevenson.

Timothy Christian’s Bootsma and Petrulakis compete in state 3-point shooting contest Trojans duo finishes up senior season on big stage in Peoria

Timothy Christian seniors Matt Bootsma and Andrew Petrulakis wrapped up their high-school basketball careers on the big stage recently.

The pair participated in the Class 2A state 3-point shooting finals held at the Peoria Civic Center’s Carver Arena.

Petrulakis made seven 3-pointers in Group 1 of the preliminary round and did not advance. Three shooters made 10 each out of that group to move on.

Bootsma made six 3-pointers in Group 4 in the preliminary round and did not advance. One shooter from Group 4 made 10 threes to move on.

“Both Andrew and I had pretty limited playing time during the season,” said Bootsma earlier last week.

“This was pretty unexpected to make it this far, for sure.”

Bootsma said he would work on his 3-point shot when time permitted during the season. “I would just shoot when I had the chance in practice,” he said. “I’ve always been pretty good with shooting, but it’s not something I practiced specifically.”

Bootsma made 10 threes in the regional portion of the competition to advance. “I tried not to be nervous,” he said. “I tried to make it a low-pressure thing for myself. I did pretty well with that until I got on

the actual floor and then I was a little nervous.”

Things ramped up a tad at the sectional level where Bootsma and Petrulakis found themselves tied with another individual with nine 3s each.

Only two remaining state-qualifying spots remained. “It was a shoot-off with myself, Andrew and a kid from Aurora Christian,” Bootsma explained. “I was the third shooter and all I needed was five to move on. I made two shots on the first rack (5 balls are on each rack) and had to make three on the next one. I was a little nervous on that last rack.”

Both Bootsma and Petrulakis advanced from the shoot-off. Petrulakis made seven in the shoot-off.

“I think the biggest thing is probably not letting the pressure get to you too much,” said Bootsma. “Once you think about that too much, you lose your shooting form that you’ve used for many years because you are thinking about things you shouldn’t be thinking about. My big thing was just let it happen. I’ve been practicing for 12 years. There is no reason to change. It all comes natural if you don’t think about it too much.”

Bootsma said it was neat to think that two players from the same school advanced to the state finals.

“For sure. We’re a small Christian school that maybe not too many people know about,’ he said. “It’s cool that both of us moved on. We can spread the name further.”

Bootsma also plays first base on the baseball team at Timothy and has his sights set on attending Colorado Christian University outside Denver

in Lakewood where he’s thinking about a psychology major.

“When I visited there it felt like it was a great place to be at,” he said.

“I love the community there at the

school and the area.”

Bootsma has been a Timothy student since preschool. “My family has a long history there and I’ve been going there for like 13 years,”

he said. “It’s all I know. It’s a great community of Christians with teachers who love their students and love God. It’s been a great place for me to grow as a person and as a Christian.”

York boys water polo team filled with talent Dukes looking to improve on 20-win season

The York boys water polo team lacks not for talent this season.

The Dukes return many contributors from a 2018 team that went 2012 overall and finished second in the West Suburban Conference with a 4-1 mark.

Leading that list of returning folks is senior driver Isaac Marlott, who posted 111 goals last year and earned second-team all-state status as a junior. Marlott was also a first-team all-conference pick and was the top vote-getter on the all-sectional first team. He also had 39 assists and 55 steals.

Junior driver Jay Jensen, who started as a sophomore, is back. He was an all-sectional pick a year ago.

Junior center Carson Hicks was a varsity regular as a sophomore last season. Jensen also earned all-sectional honors. Jensen’s 26 assists last year was third on the team.

Sophomore Andrew Hausoul will play center defender. He started three games on varsity as a freshman last year.

Junior Michael McKenna started as a sophomore last year and will play driver, while senior Nick Ward is back at the driver slot as well. He started eight games in 2018.

Key newcomers to the team include juniors Liam Enright and Will Yasdick. Both were back and forth between the varsity and frosh-soph team last year, but mostly starred on the underlevel team.

“They are ready to be in our fulltime varsity rotation this year,” said York coach Brian Drumm of Enright and Yasdick.

Sophomores Jacob Dunlap and Josh Allen also will see varsity playing time this year, while junior Max Shemroske and Dan Kowalski were key frosh-soph contributors last year and Drumm noted will be important role players on the varsity this season.

“This year our strength is our scoring ability,” said Drumm. “It’s not every year that you feel like everyone you put in the game will be able to score. This year we have 10-12 guys who can go in and put the ball away.

Last year, Isaac scored a ton of goals, but we’ve been developing more options with other guys so teams can’t key in on him so much.”

Drumm said Hicks is ready to take the next step forward on offense.

“We’re really excited about Carson

Hicks, who has come a really long way in learning the center position,” the coach said. “He’s worked hard in the offseason and we’ll actually revolve a lot of what we do around him. Jay Jensen also can score, but he’s really turned into an unbelievably efficient passer as well, so we’ll try to get the ball in his hands a lot.

And then there is Isaac, who has been doing great things on varsity for the past few seasons.”

York’s goalie is the 6-foot, 7-inch Robby Lothian. “He has a long 6-7 frame and is also a former baseball player, so he is able to distribute the ball really well,” said Drumm. “The other centerpiece for our defense is Andrew Hansoul, who was our backup center defender on varsity as a freshman last year. Andrew is the type of kid who will play water polo anywhere and anytime. He’s been working hard to be that full-time guy in front of Robby.”

Drumm cautions while his team has plenty of talent and promise, it still is young on paper. “Isaac is the only four-year player on our roster and we only have three seniors,” he said.

“A lot of the boys still are working out their roles on our team, so we’re excited to see how the pieces all fit together.”

tition is at even greater heights this season. “This year I think the state took a step forward in talent,” he said. “There are a lot of really good teams. Until someone can beat them consistently, Lyons Township will continue to be the conference favorites. They have the player of the year

in the state, they are deep and they are well-coached. Oak Park also is a really well-coached squad with some really talented players. Our goal is to improve as a result of every practice or game and to peak in May. We’re really excited to see what these boys can do.”
