There was a joint meeting of the City’s Planning & Zoning Committee and the Zoning & Planning Commission on Tuesday, March 3 at City Hall to begin the process of rewriting the zoning code as needed.

The Commission, chaired by former 3rd Ward Alderman Susan Rose, is an advisory board to the Elmhurst City Council through the Planning & Zoning Committee chaired by 6th Ward Alderman Michael Honquest.

Honquest and Rose led the meeting on Tuesday, introducing Arista Strugys of Camiros consulting, who gave an overview of the process of rewriting zoning ordinances.

The presentation was based on information gathered at recent community open house events that offered the public an overview of the City’s zones.

He said the word “college” can be misleading and cause confusion in this day and age.

“Too many people think the word ‘college’ refers to community college,” VanAken said. “We want ‘real world’ preparation for our students with an emphasis on teaching and mentoring. We have a proud tradition of civic involvement and social responsibility.”

He said that Elmhurst College’s enrollment was on the rise, unlike many institutions that are seeing a reduction in enrollment numbers.

VanAken considers retention an even more important part.

“The rate at which our students are returning, that’s what’s really important,” he said. “It is a comprehensive indicator of how we are treating our students. There was a significant rise in retention to 82.5%, up seven percentage points over six years ago.”

He discussed the change of Elmhurst College to a University and the College’s Sesquicentennial celebration coming in 2021.

After an introduction by Daniels that included Dr. Annette VanAken and a short video featuring students telling of their experiences, President Dr. Troy VanAken began his remarks with a shout-out to the Elmhurst College basketball team, which just won its first round of the playoffs following a highly successful season that led them to win the CCIW Championship--and beyond.

VanAken said they had been a little “casual” about fundraising lately, but were going to have to ramp it out with the College’s Sesquicentennial celebration coming in 2021.

“Our students are fortunate to be a part of the Elmhurst community and

of DuPage County,” he said. “Your role is important, too.”

As of 12 midnight on July 1, Elmhurst will officially be changing from a College to a University and VanAken insisted people hold the date for a special celebration. He said the big gates on campus would be taken down and sent away to be retooled to read “University.” He then explained the reason for the change and what it means for the students as well as the community.

“Calling ourselves a University more accurately reflects what we’ve become,” Van Aken said. “We offer so many undergrad and graduate programs and eventually plan to offer doctoral programs to prepare our

Former House Speaker and Elmhurst College presidential advisor Lee Daniels kicked off the morning on Saturday, March 7, by announcing that it was the 50th Elmhurst College President’s Breakfast ever held at the institution. Daniels even joked that he attended the first one!

He added that the big news was that the school was changing from Elmhurst College to Elmhurst University effective this July. Daniels then introduced Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley who delivered a message of unity and harmony between the City and College, noting how many events and programs they had worked on together to assure a bright future for both.

“The College is an asset for case studies and projects,” Morley said.

“The young people keep our community vital.”

The mayor offered a summary of the City’s current financial status and the various projects going on toward economic development particularly in the downtown area. He mentioned the work that was being done for storm water mitigation and the agreement between the City and School District 205.

“Over the last six years, we have put in 11 projects to help with flooding and storm water mitigation,” he said. “We signed an agreement to work together with District 205 on storm water mitigation. We used to be the town that floods; now we’re known as the town that did something about flooding.”

Morley mentioned that downtown was getting a new facelift, including a $25 million train depot, of which $20 million is already funded, thanks to City staff garnering various grants.

He concluded with a mention of the “Everybody Counts in Elmhurst” campaign, urging participation in the

IC Catholic Prep announces new principal Stephen Davidson begins July 1

The Very Reverend Thomas Paul, Pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish and the IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) Board of Directors have announced the selection of Stephen Davidson as the new principal of IC Catholic Prep. He officially begins on July 1.

The Board conducted a thorough search for a new principal to lead the high school after current principal Tom Schergen announced that he will be the new principal at De La Salle Institute in Chicago for the 2020-21 school year.

“I am very pleased that upon the recommendation of the Board, Stephen has been chosen as the new principal of IC Catholic Prep,” said Paul. “Stephen’s strong background in academics, coaching and student life make him the right person to lead our school today and well in to the future.”

For the past 17 years, Stephen has developed his student-centered style of educational leadership. He was hired by now-retired principal Pamela M. Levar in 2016 as Assistant

Principal of Curriculum.

Before joining ICCP, Stephen was a Theology and Spanish teacher; head coach of the Cross Country, Track and Boxing teams, and the Director of Student Activities at Marist High School.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Philosophy, Theology and Spanish from University of Notre Dame, a Master of Arts degree - Teaching (Type 10 certification) from Dominican University and a Master of Arts – School Leadership (Type 75 certification) degree from Concordia University.

“I am excited to step into this leadership role and am confident that together with our faculty and staff, we will continue to build upon the strengths of our school,” said Davidson. “We are all committed to Catholic education and to making IC Catholic Prep the best possible educational experience for young women and men to develop in Spirit, Mind, and Body. I share the high expectations of our ICCP community, and I look forward to collaborating with our amazing faculty, students, alumni, parents and stakeholders to ensure that we continue our tradition of excellence.”

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Assault, battery March 3 An officer responded to a hotel in the 900 block of Riverside at around 12:08 p.m. for the report of a fight. The suspect was involved in an argument with several individuals.

During the argument, the suspect pushed the complainant. All of the subjects denied being punched and no injuries were observed on any of the subjects. The complainant did not want to pursue charges.

March 1 Jalisa Hugle, 24, of Bellwood, was charged with battery and disorderly conduct at Elmhurst Hospital at around 2:46 a.m. A complainant stated Hugle became irate and punched her, according to police.

Criminal trespass, criminal damage March 1 A victim at a restaurant in the 600 block of W. North told police at around 10 p.m. that after her shift ended, she drove through the parking lot and her vehicle’s tires sounded odd. She discovered three homemade spikes were stuck in her vehicle’s tires. The victim suspects her ex-boyfriend. An investigation is pending.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance March 3 A 20-year-old Glen Ellyn man was charged with domestic battery in the 700 block of Walnut at around 5:18 p.m. A victim told police that she and another person were sitting in a vehicle when the suspect grabbed her arm and tried to break it. The suspect related that he was trying to sleep and the victim keep honking the horn. He grabbed her arm to get her to stop.

Feb. 29 A victim in the 500 block of S. Cambridge told police at around 12:07 p.m. that the suspect threw a laptop charger at her, striking her in the arm. The reporting officer spoke with the suspect who denied throwing anything at the victim. No arrests were made due to con-

flicting statements and no signs of injury. The suspect was advised not to have any further contact with the victim.

Feb. 27 A 49-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery and operating a vehicle without an interlock device in the 700 block of Spring at around 11:59 p.m. Police said the suspect struck the victim in the face with a closed fist and left the scene. Upon arrival, officers observed the victim to have visible injuries. The suspect admitted to punching the victim, according to police.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication March 4 Jeffery Hunter, 35, of Chicago, was charged with DUI in the 400 block of S. Fairfield at around 2:04 p.m. Police said an officer responded to the area for the report of a vehicle that hit the curb and parked in a driveway.

Jan. 1-March 4 Theft of vehicle parts was reported at a company in the 200 block of N. West. A complainant told police that an unknown subject(s) removed the catalytic converters from two work vehicles that were parked in front of the business sometime between the above dates.

March 1 Monier Amirilari, 31, of Chicago Ridge, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and disobeying a stop sign subsequent to a traffic stop near Madison and York at around 4:16 a.m.

Jason Ruiz, 22, of Bolingbrook was charged with DUI and no valid registration subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and York at around 2:03 a.m.

Feb. 29 Lawrence Linderwood, 27, of Naperville, was charged with DUI subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 900 block of S. Riverside at around 6:58 p.m.

Michael F. Penca, 42, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI in the 100 block of W. Third at around 9:05 p.m.

Omar Perez, 21, of Berkeley, was charged with DUI-drugs, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance subsequent to a vehicle crash near North and Highview at around 5:48 p.m.

Feb. 28 Julie Kaupert, 46, of Park Ridge, was charged with DUI and injuring city property subsequent to a single vehicle crash in the 100 block of S. York at around 10:54 p.m.

Feb. 27 Hesham Khamissi, 38, of Carol Stream, was charged with transportation of open alcohol, driving while license revoked and operating a vehicle with one headlight subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Poplar at around 9:25 p.m. Police said a search of Khamissi’s vehicle yielded an open can of beer.

Fleeing, eluding Feb. 28 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop for tinted windows and suspicious activity at a

bank near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 8:58 p.m., the suspect fled southbound on Route 83 at a high rate of speed. This case is pending investigation.

Harassment, threats Feb. 29 A victim in the 500 block of W. St. Charles told police at around 9:39 a.m. that the suspect made threats to harm the victim. A reporting officer spoke with the suspect who denied making any threats. The suspect was advised not to call or text the victim and to only communicate through email.

Obstruction March 3 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Grand at around 11:46 p.m. the vehicle allegedly fled from the stop, because disabled and three subjects inside the vehicle reportedly fled the scene on foot. A search of the area was conducted, and police said Angel C. Hernandez, 20, of Chicago, was located.

Police said Hernandez was found to have a valid warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. He was charged with obstructing a police officer and possession of adult use cannabis in a vehicle. Police said arrest warrants will be sought for the other two suspects.

Feb. 29 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Villa at around 2:22 a.m., a reporting officer made contact with the occupants of the vehicle, noticing that two rear seat passengers were not wearing their seat belts.

When asked to identify himself, police said Bernard Acosta, 20, of West Chicago, provided a false name and date of birth. Acosta’s true identity was learned and he was found to have two active warrants out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, according to police. Acosta and Ramon Nicoski-Moreno, 20, of West Chicago, were found to be in possession of cannabis which was not properly sealed in a childproof container, police said. Nicoski-Moreno was issued a citation for unlawful possession of cannabis in a vehicle. Acosta was charged with obstructing, no seat belt and unlawful possession of adult-use cannabis in a vehicle.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance March 5 Ryan Holman, 25, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis and no front headlight, while Sean Odell, 25, of Elmhurst, was cited for unlawful possession of a adult-use cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Kenilworth at around 12:04 a.m.

Feb. 28 Anthony R. Melton, 27, of Gilberts, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and Lake at around 2:16 a.m. Police said Melton was found to be in possession of crack cocaine.

Eduardo Morales, 20, of Bellwood, was issued citations for possession of adult-use cannabis in a vehicle near St. Charles and Lawndale at around 11:04 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Morales was found to be in possession of cannabis which was not being transported in a sealed, child-

proof, odor-proof container.

March 4 A reporting officer met with a complainant in the 700 block of W. Grand at around 3 p.m. who stated an unknown suspect described as a black male with a thin build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt over his head and a black baseball cap, exited a dark colored vehicle and attempted to enter a vehicle parked in the lot.

At this point, a technician ran out of the service bay and scared off the suspect, who jumped back into his vehicle and fled the scene.

March 3-March 4 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 800 block of S. Riverside. A complainant told police that multiple vehicle parts had been stolen off his semi-tractor while the truck was parked at the above location overnight.

A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) stole the white body panel from under the driver’s side door of his semi-trailer. The truck and trailer were both parked in the lot of the above location.

Forgery was reported at a restaurant in the 500 block of W. North at around 10 a.m. A complainant told police she was at the above location using the drive-through when she noticed something in the shrubbery. She exited her car, learned the object was a counterfeit $100 bill, and turned it over to the responding officer. The bill was placed into evidence for destruction.

Theft was reported in the 300 block of E. Butterfield at around 2:29 p.m. A complainant told police that her gold bracelet was on her nightstand and now she is not able to find it. She recently had a HVAC company doing work in her residence and suspects that a worker may have taken the bracelet.

March 2 A victim in the 200 block of North End came into the police station at around 6:39 p.m. for a delayed theft of a vehicle report. The victim told police that when she left for work in the morning her vehicle was parked in the driveway. When she returned home from work, the vehicle was no longer there. The victim states that the car was locked and no keys are missing. The victim believes the suspect stole the vehicle. The vehicle was entered into LEADS.

Feb. 28 Commercial theft was reported at a car dealership in the 700 block of W. Lake at around 7:21 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect entered the service bay and began looking around suspiciously. The complainant approached the suspect and the suspect quickly exited the building and entered a dark blue Ford Edge.

The suspect left southbound onto Grand. He was described as a black male, wearing a black jacket with a fur hood, a gray winter hat, white gloves, white shoes and glasses. It was later determined the suspect took four tires with wheels from the dealership.

Obituaries

Dan McLeister, 73 Long-time reporter for the Independent Dan McLeister, a resident of Crest Hill, and a former longtime resident of Carol Stream, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, March 2, 2020, at the age of 73. He was born May 12, 1946, to John “Jack” Jr. and Marjorie “Marge” McLeister. He was raised in Ambler, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Wissahickon High School.

Dan went on to graduate from Ohio University with a degree in journalism.

He met Eileen Rayburn in college and they were married on June 21, 1969, in Lima, Ohio. He took a job at the Ann Arbor News in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as a business reporter. In 1976, he moved his young family to Carol Stream. He worked for Professional

Builder Magazine as an editor from 1977 to 2000. Afterward, he worked as a freelance journalist, including covering the city of Elmhurst as a reporter for the Elmhurst Independent.

He enjoyed golf and watching sports, especially the University of Michigan and Chicago Bears football.

He enjoyed the outdoors and attending his grandchildren’s activities. His Christian faith was an important part of his life and he regularly attended First Baptist Church of Wheaton and, most recently, College Church in Wheaton.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen McLeister; three daughters, Natalie (Paul) Smith of Montgomery, Carol McLeister of Dublin, Ohio, and Katherine McLeister of Schererville, Ind.; and two grandchildren, Mikayla and Evan Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Man reportedly attacks stepfather who wanted to clean On March 1, a 37-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 700 block of Junior Terrace at around 6:36 p.m.

A victim told police that he asked his stepson to move from the couch so he could clean. The suspect reportedly swore at the victim, grabbed the victim, and threw him to the floor. The suspect then allegedly pushed the victim up against the wall and punched the victim. An officer observed the victim’s neck was red and he had a cut to his lower lip. The suspect told police the victim initially grabbed at his shirt so he defended himself.

Fire Department responds to fire, accident with injuries Causes emergency road closure in Elmhurst On Monday, March 5 at 2:27 p.m., Elmhurst Fire companies were dispatched to Prospect Avenue and Butterfield Road for the report of an accident with injuries. Upon arrival Elmhurst companies found that a private refuse hauler’s truck had veered off the road striking an electrical utility pole nearly severing it from its base.

There was also a small amount of diesel fuel leaking from the truck.

ComEd was notified and dispatched to the scene. Companies on scene secured the leaking fuel from the truck and recovered what was remaining on the ground.

Damage estimates were not available at press time. The driver of the truck was taken to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.

Fire reported on 200 block of N. Elm Also on Monday, March 5 at approximately 4:30 p.m., Elmhurst Fire companies were dispatched to the 200 block of N. Elm Ave for the report of fire. Upon arrival Elmhurst companies found that an attached garage was on fire. The fire was able to be extinguished and was contained to the garage. Moderate damage was sustained. No one was injured.

Conroy visits children’s hospital specializing in mental health Pledges continued work in mental healthcare access To better understand the youth mental health crisis in Illinois, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, visited Hartgrove Hospital in Chicago this month as part of her role as Chairperson of the House Mental Health Committee “Every day, I work towards the goal of achieving true mental health parity because we can see how important mental health is to overall health and well-being,” said Conroy. “While at the mental health hospital, I met with children who have further helped to shape my perspective on a system that is bursting at the seams. We have to do more to guarantee access to mental health resources.”

Conroy fears that the state of Illinois may be keeping children in mental health hospitals for a longer period of time than needed, which doesn’t help the child, healthcare provider, future patients, or taxpayer.

As a mental health advocate, Conroy has fought for increased education and dialogue about mental health, as well as measures forcing insurance companies to cover the cost of mental healthcare services.

“We have a mental health crisis in our state and our children are suffering because of it,” Conroy added. “No child should be left in a hospital beyond medical necessity simply because we have nowhere to send them where they can receive safe, effective treatment and care. We must provide the resources our most vulnerable residents need so that we can restore hope for all of our youth struggling with mental health issues.”

Elmhurst College bands to perform Winter Concert The Elmhurst College Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will present their Winter Band Concert on Sunday, March 15 beginning at 2 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel on the campus.

Under the direction of John Heath, the Symphonic Band will perform “Flashing Winds” by Jan Van der Roost, and feature others works such as Percy Grainger’s “Spoon River” and H. Owen Reed’s “La Fiesta Mexicana,” and will end with Roland Seitz’s “March ‘Grandioso.’”

The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of James Hile, will open

its portion of the program with “Ecstatic Fanfare” by Steven Bryant and “Aurora Awakes” by John Mackey.

Christian Sanchez ’22, a sophomore jazz studies major and saxophone player, will be featured on Bernhard Heiden’s “Diversion.” Other works will include Percy Grainger’s “Molly on the Shore,” Omar Thomas’ “Come Sunday” and “Free Lance March” by John Philip Sousa.

House Republicans call for action on tax relief Illinois State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst), along with State Reps. Dan Brady (R-Normal), Joe Sosnowski (R-Rockford) and Dan Ugaste (R-Geneva), has announced new legislative proposals to provide

property tax relief to struggling homeowners. The announcement was made after the Democrat-led Property Tax Relief Task Force failed to present any viable solutions to what the Republican State Reps called “this crisis.”

“We have been waiting, waiting and waiting for Democrats to keep their promise to join us and pass meaningful property tax reform,” said Mazzochi.

When I first heard Dan McLeister had three daughters, two of them twins, I thought, what a great father he must have always been to three girls! He seems like the kind of Dad who would welcome a sobbing little one into his lap and hold her there until her tears stopped and her troubles melted away. He seemed kind and understanding and the kind of Dad who would listen for hours with a contented smile on his face, grateful for his role as a father.

“My dad is a typical softhearted Irish gentlemen,” said his daughter Kathy, who spoke of him affectionately. “Many things can move him to tears.”

Long-time Elmhurst Independent news reporter Dan McLeister passed away on Monday, March 2 after battling several health problems including diabetes. On Friday, Feb. 28, he suffered a “significant cardiac event,” that resulted in the family having to make the painful decision to remove him from life support on Monday afternoon. He passed away peacefully shortly after, with his family at his side.

He is survived by his wife Eileen, who worked for the Addison Public Library, and three daughters.

Kathy used to work for the Illinois Theatrical Museum that was located on the upper floor of the York Theatre building in downtown Elmhurst. In 2002, she brought home a “new newspaper” called the Independent and told her Dad the paper was looking for freelance writers.

Dan began his service to the Independent and its readers in the midst of the Block 300 negotiations, which eventually led to what is now known as the Crescent Court development by Fifth Third Bank.

His background was writing for building and architectural magazines so he knew his way around the zoning process and how it could challenge those industries.

As a writer, he was very thorough – sometimes to a fault – he never

The first installment of property tax bills in Cook County have already come due and tax bills in counties throughout the state will be due over the next few months, yet zero reform measures have been advanced by the House Democrats this session.

As one piece of the House Republican reform initiative, Rep. Mazzochi introduced House Bill 5293 that creates the senior citizens homestead school levy exemption to tackle the largest part of the property tax bill that is forcing life-long residents out of the homes they have owned for decades.

“Property taxes have been too heavy a burden for Illinois taxpayers for far too long,” said Ugaste.

“Right now we are entering our sixth week of the legislative session and nothing has been accomplished for property tax reform. I have filed six bills to help provide property tax relief—but none of them have moved forward. I am calling on Democrat lawmakers from across the aisle to work with me on real reform, to get this legislation passed so we can begin giving residents of Illinois from

Another proposal presented by Rep. Ugaste, House Bill 4143, gives local school districts the ability to reduce costs by discontinuing state mandates that are not adequately funded by the state or are not improving student outcomes.

“Families and seniors need the property tax relief they have been promised time and time again,” said Rep. Dan Brady.

“We all need to hold the Democrat majority accountable and demand they keep their promise to provide real property tax relief. Joining us to pass House Bills 4143 and 5293 would be a big step toward making Illinois a place where everyone can afford to work, raise their family, and retire.”

“The legislation we are introducing today would achieve meaningful, lasting property tax relief for Illinois families and job creators,” said Rep. Joe Sosnowski. “In the wake of the Democrats’ failed property tax relief task force, we are taking the common-sense reforms we’ve been offering from the start and putting them into specific bill form. Now it’s time to let legislators on both sides of the aisle, from every region of the state, debate and vote on proposals that can finally deliver the property tax relief we all know Illinois needs.”

House Republicans have filed more than 20 pieces of legislation comprehensively addressing property tax relief that ranges from local pension reform, mandate relief, and increased transparency to consolidation and resource sharing among local governments to drive down costs.

In terms of improvements to the zoning process, Rose said she felt the greatest need was to make things easier for residents who are adding something to their homes.

“If you’re a developer you’ve got a whole group of attorneys with you, but residents shouldn’t have to feel like they need a lawyer just because they want to build a deck.”

Drones can’t be zoned Speaking of technology advancing more rapidly than government can keep up, drones are already here and show no signs of going away – only signs of more and more frequent use in more and more different applications and capacities.

When drones came up at the meeting, Strugys gave the bad news.

“Drones are not on land and therefore, are not subject to any land zoning laws,” she said.

As stories mount about drones flying onto people’s property, even up to their windows, the next challenge seems to be how to monitor and control them, especially to protect the privacy of residents.

“We’ll have to figure out how to zone air,” someone later commented.

All nine defendants were taken into custody on Friday, Feb. 28, with the adults appearing in bond court later that afternoon and Saturday morning. The juvenile appeared at his detention hearing Monday, March 2.

The arrests are the culmination of a multi-agency effort begun last fall conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, the DEA, the Addison Police Department and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Charged in the operation are:

On Friday, Feb. 28 at 6 a.m., officials from the four agencies, working in teams, began their operations in locating and apprehending the above-named defendants. By 7 a.m., the first of the defendants was located and arrested. Throughout the morning authorities continued their search. By 12 noon, the final defendant, Favela was located and arrested. In total, the State filed 14 Felony drugs and weapons charges and six Misdemeanor charges.

Garden Club selects annual scholarship recipients

On Monday, March 2, the Elmhurst Garden Club (EGC) held its 21st annual “Meet the Scholars” luncheon at Wilder Mansion.

This year, EGC awarded a total of $15,000 in scholarships to six Illinois residents: Emma Boehm, Indiana University; Alexander Horvath, University of Wisconsin; Colin Korst, Yale University; Angel Martin, College of DuPage; Zachary Rahn, College of DuPage; and Jack Zinnen, University of Illinois.

After enjoying a lunch that included green eggs and ham – as the event coincidentally fell on Dr. Seuss’ birthday – each scholarship recipient gave a presentation on his/ her research activity or interest.

“Each scholar shares his or her own area of interest with our club,” said Pat O’Dwyer, EGC’s scholarship chairperson. “The Elmhurst Garden Club members are grateful to be able to encourage these students with our scholarships.

In turn, the students encourage us with their energy, enthusiasm, and vision.”

This year’s topics ranged from the demographic and genetic decline of an endemic plant, to the relationship of justice, economic and social factors involved in the cashew economy in Kintampo,

To date, the EGC has proudly awarded $165,000 to 90 students.

In keeping with EGC’s mission, its scholarship program serves to encourage and support education, research, and teaching careers in a variety of study including horticulture, conservation, landscape design, botany, and environmental studies.

offers an Exploratory/Experiential Summer School Scholarship to York High School freshmen, sophomores and juniors to participate in an educational experience related to the environment.

Application deadline is March 20. Applications for all scholarships can be found at elmhurstgardenclub.org.

In addition to providing scholarships, EGC’s 120 members support the Elmhurst community in many ways. Since 1952, EGC has purchased for and placed holiday decorations at the Elmhurst Public Library.

Each month, members provide Lutheran Evangelical adult daycare center patrons with materials to make floral arrangements, which they take home to their families.

Members plant and maintain Wilder Park’s herb garden in cooperation with Elmhurst Park District, and enhance the outdoor environment of the Ray Graham Community Learning Center as well.

EGC members mentor York High School’s Garden Club members, helping students with gardening and horticultural activities, including maintenance of gardens and raised vegetable beds.

York boys basketball team reaches regional final

Dukes finish year with 28 wins, WSC Silver title

The York boys basketball team ended its season with a 60-55 loss to Morton in the Class 4A Morton regional championship game in Berwyn.

“It was a good game, but we shot poorly,” York coach Vince Doran said. “At one point we were 4 of 16 from the line. We shot pretty bad. We missed some easy ones. Shooting has been something that has hurt us all year. Our defense really stepped up this year and helped us.”

Doran offered no excuses in the Morton loss.

“It was more of what we didn’t do,” he said. “We didn’t shoot well and we turned it over way more than we usually do. At one point there were four straight possessions where we turned it over and that hasn’t happened all year.”

York led Morton by a point at halftime. “There was a good run in the third quarter. We couldn’t shake them,” said Doran. “Turnovers were costly. We had missed opportunities.”

York reached the Morton final after defeating Chicago Kennedy. “We jumped out to a good start and that set us up to get to the regional finals,” Doran said.

Despite the loss, Doran stressed York had another above-and-beyond season. The team went 28-5, which is the second-best record in program history, coming on the heels of last year’s 29-5 effort.

“I’m very proud of the kids,” he said. “They played hard all year. Unfortunately, against Morton things didn’t go our way. A 28-5 record would be the second-best in school history. These are great kids. We won our first conference championship since 2006 and won the Martin Luther King title at Wheaton-South and took second at the Tosh (York’s Christmas tournament). We played a great schedule. We beat Benet twice and beat Oak-Park River Forest twice in our league. We had some very good wins this year. It was a fun year. We were able to play against Max Christie from Rolling Meadows, who has an offer from Duke.

Timothy Christian boys basketball team wins sectional title Trojans one win away from trip to Class 2A finals

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team put the pedal to the floor recently.

The Trojans racked up 89 points in their 89-78 win over Rockford Lutheran to win the Class 2A Genoa-Kingston sectional title in Genoa.

It was Timothy Christian’s first sectional title since 2010. The Trojans played Minonk Fieldcrest at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb earlier this week for a shot to go to this weekend’s Class 2A state finals in Peoria.

“It was a ton of fun,” said Timothy coach Scott Plaisier. “The game was super-fast paced. It was up and down and up and down. Our guys did a really good job. We got ourselves back in it and built a lead. We had a number of defensive stops and converted layups on the other side. We made some big shots. Josh Harris had a couple big 3s for us in the third quarter. We responded to their press and made some layups.”

Plaisier tipped his hat to Rockford Lutheran for its tenacity. “Rockford came right back,” he said. “They pressed all game and got right back in it. Eighty-nine points is a lot.

Rockford Lutheran is a good team that was averaging 74 points a game.

They were used to scoring pretty high. I thought we could stay with them if we finished enough layups and didn’t let them make as many 3s as they usually make. The guys did a

fantastic job defending their 3-point shooters. They have some great shooters. They were not able to make a lot of 3s on us.”

Plaisier said the win was especially satisfying given the roster he has. “This is a very special group of guys,” he said. “They play with passion and respect the game. They play for each other. It seems to be different guys giving us different key minutes when we need them to help us get wins. They fight and get right back in these games. They are fantastic. They love to compete and they love competition. They have the ability to rise to the occasion, which is pretty special.”

Harris led the Trojans with 25 points against Rockford. Matt Owens added 23 points and 10 assists, while AJ Vos had 17 points and 16 rebounds.

“AJ had a monster game,” said

Plaisier.

Timothy moved to 27-5 overall with the win.

“It’s been a great ride,” said Plaisier. “They keep enjoying each moment. The boys keep saying they want to prolong the season as long as they can. I agree. There hasn’t been a day that I did not want to walk in the gym and coach them. If we can get another week, I will absolutely take it.”

Plaisier also lauded the support the team received from the Timothy community, given the long commute out west to Genoa.

“We had a great crowd,” he said.

“Rockford also brought a great crowd. It was a fantastic environment.”

In the Rockford win, Timothy led 20-17 after the first quarter and 4441 at intermission. Timothy scored 45 points in the second half and used

a 21-10 third-quarter run to its advantage.

The Trojans attempted 69 shots in the win and shot 54 percent from the field. Harris hit three 3-pointers.

Sophomore Ben VanderWal had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Harris also had three steals. Vos had three blocked shots.

The Trojans reached the Genoa final by scoring a 61-53 win over Wheaton Academy. Timothy led 18-8 after the first quarter and 26-18 at halftime. The Trojans outscored Wheaton 19-9 in the third and survived a 26-16 Wheaton run in the fourth quarter.

Owens had 18 points, while VanderWal had 13 points. Harris had 11 points and Vos had 10 points.

VanderWal pulled in 12 rebounds, while Vos and Owens each had six rebounds. Owens had seven assists and four steals.

The York girls basketball team had a specific number of goals it wanted to achieve this season.

“We checked off pretty much every goal we had from the summer,” coach Brandon Collings noted. “It really was a good season.”

York ended 26-8 overall, won its first outright West Suburban Conference Silver Division title since 1994, and won a Class 4A regional title.

When looking back, Collings pointed to defense as a common success denominator.

“It was our ability to shut teams down defensively,” he said. “We did a lot better job defensively this season. We had a lot of people step

We were young this year. We had two sophomores and two juniors in the lineup and a junior coming off the bench that played pretty good minutes. We’re looking forward to next year.”

York also was able to count on many different contributors throughout the season. “That was another one of the things that impressed me so much,” Collings said.

“Last year, Sara Krissinger was our main scorer. We were young last year. When things weren’t going so well, Sara had to step up and play well. This year, it didn’t have to be that way. She was able to relax and play her game and not have to push too hard. On any given night

this year we could have a different leading scorer whether that was Megan Juneman, Sydney Molis or even Sydney Fuglsang led us in scoring in a game.”

Krissinger averaged around 11 points a game, Collings noted, followed by Molis at nine points, Kaitlyn Kjome and Juneman at eight points and 3-point-shooting standout Carley Schwartz was at seven points.

“A lot of girls stepped up for us and were able to score,” Colling said. “We were a tough team to guard because you couldn’t overlook anybody that went Krissinger, Molis and Kjome were named to the all-West Suburban Conference Silver Division team.

Collings said next year continues to have a bright outlook given the

amount of returning players, plus the fact the York sophomore, freshman A and freshman B teams went undefeated in WSC Silver play this season.

“The future still looks very bright,” the coach said. “We have our core coming back. We started Sydney Fuglsang almost every game, but the last two games we ended up starting four juniors. So those four, Kaitlyn, Megan, Sydney Molis and Amaya Rufus, are all back. Kaitlyn, Megan and Sydney will end up being threeyear varsity basketball players. We have some girls on the bench who will help us out next year. We will need to fill some guard spots and we have some really good ones coming up. We have good guards coming from the sophomore team who will make an impact right away.”

All in all, Collings is thrilled where the program has gotten to and where it is headed. “We reached our goals,” he said. “The big goal was to get that regional title. After winning the regional title and almost getting to the sectional championship game and seeing what could have been with Lake Park getting downstate, this is the first time I think the girls have seen what is possible and what they are able to accomplish. That’s how close we got. Now it’s a sectional title and getting downstate, but you can’t do those until you get the regional title. And we did that for the first time in 11 years. I think now it’s sectional title and more in terms of goals. That’s the way the program sees things now, which is a great change in expectations. That’s where we are at now.”

Mathiasen will continue his athletic endeavors on the football side at OlivetNazarene in Bourbonnais. “I had some Division I offers, but I wanted to go into Christian studies,” he said. “I would like to be a pastor and they had the major and the studies I wanted.”

Mathiasen attends Evangelical Assemblies of God church in Hanover Park. “I preach to middle school kids right now,” he said.

Mathiasen, a high honor roll student at York, said his biggest goal at the state meet was to have no regrets.

“I want to leave it out on the mat and wrestle and fight my hardest,” he said.

And Mathiasen did just that this season and during his entire York career.

High hopes for York girls lacrosse team Dukes made sectional final a year ago

York girls lacrosse coach Ryan Walz offered this succinct appraisal of his team, which went 19-5 last year, took second in the West Suburban Conference with a 5-1 record and reached the sectional title game where it lost to Hinsdale Central by a goal in overtime.

“I think we have a very good team,” he said.

York is loaded with key returning players, led by Arizona State recruit Cate Duhig. Also back are juniors Emily Fleckenstein, Ellie Bernard and Jenna Hughes. And don’t forget about

all-sectional goalie Sami Kraus.

Also back on defense are sophomores Elle Duhig, Julia Kogan and Bella Swanson, who all started last year. Senior attacker Erica Buckley returns, as does starting attacker Olivia Holubowicz.

Key newcomers to the team include freshmen Megan Walker (attack), Ella Kennedy (defense) and Payton Romano (attack).

“We are solid all the way though on offense and defense,” said Walz.

“I don’t see a lot of weaknesses. We can play with tempo, we are fast and we have good sticks. Speed will be a huge factor for us. I think we are going to be a fast team. We are pretty solid everywhere. I’m really excited about this season.”

Walz said the York midfield of Cate Duhig, Hughes, Fleckenstein and Bernard will be key. “They are huge pieces of our offense,” said Walz. “Our midfield hasn’t changed. You also add in Erica and offensively we are going to be able to score some goals. We will be good with our transitions because of our speed.”

Walz also lauded the play of Kraus in goal. “She’s a very good goalie,” he said. “She’s been having some Division I talks. She’s very good.”

Walz added a pair of goalies with hockey backgrounds in Olivia Quick and Marina Piszeor. “Olivia plays for the York hockey team and Marina plays AAA hockey. We now have goalies for the next three years, which is exciting,” he said.

York lost 11-10 to Hinsdale Central in overtime in the sectional final a year ago.

The Dukes only conference loss came against Hinsdale Central as well.

“We want to beat Hinsdale Central and make it to the state championship,” said Walz. “If we can beat Hinsdale Central, we feel anything is possible.

But we have to get out of our conference and Hinsdale Central is the big challenge there. They are a top-four state contender every year. We missed them by inches last year in overtime and they made it to the state championship. That left a bad taste in our mouth.

The girls are determined even more and are hungry to get back there and have that opportunity again.”

Walz noted he’s cooked up an

even more competitive schedule for the Dukes this season. “Our strength of schedule is one of the toughest in the state,” he said. “We play Loyola, which is one of the top teams in the Midwest. We play Hinsdale Central, New Trier, which won the state title, and Glenbrook South. We are going to play Arrowhead, which is the state champion in Wisconsin, and we’ll play Rockford, which is one of the top teams in Michigan.”

And speaking of Loyola, the Dukes open the season at home in the stadium at 5:30 p.m. Monday against the Ramblers. The Dukes face Maine South on Thursday and Friday with Thursday being a home game (5:30 p.m.) and Friday being at Marist in Chicago (7:15 p.m. start).

York boys lacrosse coach Don Canfield isn’t hurting for returning talent.

Canfield’s squad returns a plethora of players from a team that went 16-8 a year ago, finished 3-2 in West Suburban Conference play and reached

the sectional semifinals of the state playoffs.

Back on defense are EJ Espinosa (sophomore) and Josh Temple (junior), while midfielders Gavin Rieger (senior), Jensen Redick (senior), Chase McNeill (junior) and Charlie Toreja (faceoff specialist) are back in the midfield.

Attackers Harrison Proud (senior), Ryder Maston (sophomore), Will Siegenthaler (sophomore) and Ryan Woolfe (junior) also return. Proud

and Matson are returning all-WSC players.

Key newcomers to the team include sophomore Troy Walker (longstick midfield) and freshman Lance McCann (attack).

One key question mark for Canfield will be who will man the goal for the Dukes. Right now, Canfield noted it’s a three-way race with Senior Aiden Schiff, junior Paddie Toole and sophomore Conor Selfridge, who is returning from injury.

“That’s the big question right now,” said Canfield. “We have three and we are evaluating all of them.

They are pretty even, but we have three good options.”

Canfield said a big strength for York will be its roster diversity. “I like that we have a lot of weapons and a lot of depth,” he said. “They are a good group of guys that works well together. They are very selfless.

There is a lot of talent here, but very few egos. We have weapons. We bring back almost our entire attacking unit. We have players who shoot well. Ryder was all-conference last year, but broke his arm and is back now. The addition of Lance gives us even more depth. We have a lot of guys who will score. We can be creative with what we do on offense. We will have the ability to score goals.

And with Charlie taking face-offs, that will give us a lot of possessions.”

The defensive side of the field is shaping up nicely as well. “We have

very athletic guys who are competing for playing time,” said Canfield. “They are learning their way.

Defense is the position where we have the most new players. They are locked in at practice and competing.

There is a lot of potential there.”

Canfield said the West Suburban Conference will be challenging once again. “Glenbard West is seen from the outside as the top team,” he said.

“I think we have the potential to be right there with them. Lyons Township won it last year and they graduated nine of 10 starters. Hinsdale Central will be better. We have the hardest schedule we have ever had.

We have Lake Forest, Loyola and St. Viator on the schedule this year.”

The Dukes open the 2020 season Monday at home against Glenbard West as part of a preseason conference tournament. York then plays Oak Park-River Forest Tuesday before finishing up the event on Saturday at Lyons Township.

Radcliff sets three new records

On Friday, March 6, York high school junior Christopher Radcliff set a new York indoor record, Invitational meet record, and a York field house record for the 200 meters. His time was 22.19, and as of press time, he is ranked first in the state of Illinois.

Schwartz qualified for the Class 4A state 3-point shooting finals at Illinois State University in Normal. Schwartz made nine 3s as part of the Group 1 field at Redbird Arena last week. She tied for first in her group, but did not advance out of the group. A score of 10 earned a shootoff for a chance to win the Class 4A division and compete in the Queen of the Hill competition.

Hospital Foundation launches Ambassadors program The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation has launched a new, community-based group to represent Elmhurst Hospital and connect with the community.

The EMH Foundation Ambassadors program includes 50 members from 25 local households who will spread the word about the activities, classes and events happening at Elmhurst Hospital.

“The goal of our Ambassadors program is to connect with the community on a one-to-one level,” said Pamela Dunley, President and CEO of Elmhurst Hospital. “Our Ambassadors are community members who will be able to stay connected to the hospital by understanding the great quality programs and services we offer. They will also keep the hospital informed on how the community is experiencing the hospital and what additional needs the community has. The Ambassadors will be able to tell their friends, family and neighbors about the great things happening here at the hospital.”

The Ambassadors had their first

meeting Feb.18 at Elmhurst Hospital, joined by the EMH Foundation board members, doctors and hospital leadership.

“We have had a tremendous response to our call for ambassadors in Elmhurst,” said Susan Tyburski, Executive Director of the EMH Foundation. “We’re excited to see how this group helps us to better engage with the community.”

The Ambassadors will have an annual meeting and attend various programs and events to learn about new initiatives at Elmhurst Hospital.

“It’s my honor to lead this effort on behalf of the Foundation,” said Rich Reichert, EMH Foundation Ambassador Chair. “My wife Jenny and I are happy to be a part of this program to represent Elmhurst Hospital and share what the organization has to offer.”
