Plot thickens around missing airline executive

Cefolia home sold while still considered missing person

According to a report from the York Township Assessor’s Office obtained by the Chicago Tribune, missing United Airlines executive and Elmhurst resident Jake Cefolia sold his home in Elmhurst in November after having listed it in June.

This is the same Jake Cefolia who went missing as of Aug. 7 and has neither been seen nor heard from since.

According to reports, Cefolia purchased his home at 454 S. Rex Blvd. for $560,000 in 2016. He listed it in June of 2020—just four years later—for $589,000. Eventually, the

four-bedroom, two-bath house sold for $523,000.

Since last August, the Independent has brought its readers the news of Cefolia, a senior vice president for Worldwide Sales for United Airlines, who had last been missing since last August. Illinois law enforcement, local police, K-9 units and more than 100 volunteers came out to search for Cefolia near the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Lemont, where his vehicle had been found.

Friends told Forest Preserve District authorities that he often went for a run in that particular location, which has a loop that is about 10 miles long.

RESPECT Elmhurst officially launches

Residents hasten to commit to civility, open-mindedness, dignity towards others

After a handful of meetings and a few creative ideas from committee members, RESPECT Elmhurst has officially launched. What that means is, members of the community are invited to “Take The Pledge” and commit to being respectful and kind to others, especially those within the City of Elmhurst.

At this time, the organization has an email address: RespectElmhurst@ gmail.com as well as a presence on Facebook and Instagram. Those avenues will grow as the list of those who take the pledge grows.

Pledges may be made via Facebook, Instagram, emailed to respectelmhurst@gmail.com, or mailed to Respect Elmhurst, 242 N. York, Unit 330, Elmhurst, IL 60126.

One thing that will happen over the coming weeks and months is that, while people and organizations commit to RESPECT Elmhurst, their name(s) will be added to a Master list. Each week, as new names are added, they will appear not only on the social media sites but will be published in the Elmhurst Independent as well.

EWAN offers financial and other kinds of assistance to people in need who walk in and apply.

“Rent and utilities account for about 75% to 80% of the requests we receive,” Crnkovich told club members at a meeting held over Zoom.

“Besides that, we are asked for help with car repairs, medical and dental assistance and shoe vouchers.”

She talked about the challenges of keeping the office open to walk-in visitors.

“As an organization, we are normally open for two hours twice a day when people can come in and sit down, provide their ID and see what they need and if we can help them,” Crnkovich said. “When you can’t meet with people, then the first problem is operational. We had to try to figure out how to provide services over the phone and with the computer, but we managed to figure it all out.”

Crnkovich said many of her older volunteers had to step down with the threat of COVID-19.

“We miss our volunteers who had to leave and we don’t know if they’ll be back or not,” she said.

York Drama presents its winter production ‘The Laramie Project’ Moving performance about reflections on a hate crime

Over the past 20 years that John Forsythe and Rebecca Marianetti have been directing York Drama together, they have found that when they co-direct plays, they garner creative energy from each other.

“We direct differently in some ways and exactly the same in others,” Forsythe said. “We spin ideas off of each other every day and constantly challenge ourselves as artists.”

Forsythe and Marianetti are now producing The Laramie Project, the winter theatre production to be performed by the York Drama Department. It has also been a long-time dream for the two of them.

“This has been a labor of love, for sure,” Marianetti said. “The story of Matthew Shepard is one of great tragedy, but also is inspiring and deeply hopeful.”

About the production Developed in 2000 by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, The Laramie Project examines the public’s reaction to the 1998 murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie. The murder was denounced as a hate crime and brought attention to the lack of hate crime laws in many states but especially Wyoming.

York Drama’s production of The Laramie Project runs March 26, 27, 28 and April 4 and 5. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, March 16 at www.ticketpeak.co/yorkdrama and are $5 per viewing link plus $1.50 service charge.

Student directors Olivia Rosenberg, Charlie Kungl, Jillian Caforio and Owen Espinosa, and stage managers Henry Wegener and Kayla Willey are heading the team, along with York alumni Matt Bourke and film director Michael Berry.

Technical Director Manny Ortiz and York Tech Crew built sets that appear to be interiors, yet were actually exterior shots, allowing for COVID-19 safety precautions.

Student leader Leo Macariola wrote an entire musical score for the movie for himself and York musicians Tessa and Quinn Olson.

“What Leo did with this music is nothing short of incredible,” said Marianetti. “He, along with all of our student leaders, rose to the occasion and used their talents and hearts to create something truly meaningful.”

The play draws on hundreds of interviews conducted by the theatre company with inhabitants of the town, company members’ own journal entries, and published news reports. The cast of York’s production was able to meet via Zoom with Barbara Pitts, an original member of the Tectonic Theatre and a writer and developer of The Laramie Project.

After meeting with Pitts, senior Kathryn King reflected on the project herself.

“When I set out to research The Laramie Project and its characters, I was overwhelmed by the weight this story carried and the importance of both its

legacy and the legacy of the people it touched,” she said. “I’ve found it incredibly challenging to try and incorporate that sense of realness and remembrance into the portrayal of the characters I play, all while reminding myself that they are indeed real human beings, not characters created for this play.

Conroy’s House Resolution 131 was recently filed in response to a patient

at the DuPage County Jail being unjustly denied access to her life-saving prescribed medication. The DuPage County Jail now intends to provide the prescribed, life-saving medication during the patients stay at their facility. Medication Assisted Treatment, or MAT, is the use of medications in conjunction with behavioral therapy as part of a long-term treatment regimen.

Sadly, a stigma still pervades correctional facilities today that does not take mental health care seriously enough, as

evidenced by this life-or-death matter that unfolded at the DuPage County Jail this year, Conroy said.

“Establishing a statewide standard and mandate on medication-assisted-treatment for inmates with substance use disorders in all 102 Illinois county jails would be a gold standard of best practice to reduce both recidivism and overdose deaths after release from jail,” said Jud DeLoss, CEO of the IABH. “That’s the scientific record speaking.”

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery March 2 Makayla Vaughn, 20, of Darien, was charged with three counts of aggravated battery, two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, two counts of theft, obstructing identification, criminal trespass to a vehicle and driving while license suspended near N. Emory and E. North at around 12:21 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious auto, the reporting officer located a vehicle that was found to have been stolen out of Bartlett. Vaughn was later located after police said she committed two cellphone thefts.

Upon further investigation, Vaughn was found to have a warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and a warrant out of the Will County Sheriff’s Office, according to police.

Vaughn was placed under arrest and transported to the police station where she allegedly battered three officers. A search of Vaughn yielded controlled substances, according to police.

Feb. 28 Gail C. Brasie, 36, of Elmhurst, was charged with battery in the 500 block of Swain at around 7:11 p.m. Police said officers responded to a report of an unknown intoxicated suspect standing on the complainant’s front steps.

Upon arrival, police said Brasie was uncooperative and became irate when officers advised that her husband was on his way to the scene.

Brasie allegedly threw her purse at an officer, which struck him in the leg, and allegedly threw a set of keys, which nearly struck the officer in the head.

Criminal trespassing Feb. 28 Antonio E. Collins, 25, of Calumet City, was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle and unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver near North and Route 83 at around 10:23 p.m. Police said that while an officer was on patrol, the officer observed a vehicle which had been reported stolen out of Chicago. A traffic stop was conducted. Police said Collins was taken into custody and transported to the police station.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol March 3 Daniel Brotschul, 47, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, speeding and improper lighting subsequent to a traffic stop near E. St. Charles and S. Fair at around 12:26 a.m.

March 2 Ethan Berrera, 24, of Plainfield, was charged with DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver and driving while license revoked in the 600 block of N. York at around 8:24 p.m.

Shannant Hamilton, 27, of Wheaton, was charged with illegal transportation of open alcohol, no valid driver’s license, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near S. Villa and W. Roosevelt at around 9:07 p.m.

Feb. 28 Rafael I. Martinez Martin, 39, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated DUI, DUI, aggravated driving while license revoked, illegal transportation of open alcohol, improper lighting subsequent to a traffic stop in the 100 block of N. York at around 1:52 a.m.

Feb. 27 Devonte J. Knight, 19, of Chicago, was charged with DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver, speeding, improper lane usage, improper lighting and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Commonwealth at around 8:38 p.m.

Feb. 26 Roy L. Thompson, 49, of Black River Falls, Wis., was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, stopping in the roadway and no insurance, while Andre E. Carothers, 46, of Chicago, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis by a passenger subsequent to a vehicle stopped in the roadway near Church and Lake at around 12:24 a.m.

Fleeing, eluding March 3 Police said a reporting officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that was reported stolen out of the City of Chicago. The offending vehicle reportedly fled from officers at a high rate of speed, last seen heading northbound on Route 83.

Feb. 28 Police said an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop for speeding near Route 83 and Elizabeth at around 5:22 a.m., but the suspect refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed.

An ISPERN message was broadcast.

Harassment, threats March 2 Police said a complainant in the 300 block of W. Commonwealth reported his neighbor walked by and made an inappropriate comment towards him. The suspect stated he was upset and feels like he is being harassed by the complainant.

Garcia, 18, of Glendale Heights, was issued citations for possession of cannabis under the age of 21 and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 12:43 a.m.

Dakari R. Davis, 20, of Chicago, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver, no valid driver’s license, operating a vehicle while using a cell phone and speeding, while Marcel D. Cooper, 21, of Chicago, a passenger in the vehicle, was cited for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 9:59 p.m.

Police said Davis was in possession of eight pills of Xanax and approximately 29 grams of cannabis.

Feb. 24 Theft by deception was reported in the 800 block of S. Spring at around 11:37 a.m. A victim told police that he received a phone call from an unknown suspect purporting to be with Norton Security. The victim allowed the unknown suspect remote access to his computer. The unknown suspect then requested the victim purchase gift cards. The victim purchased the gift cards and provided the unknown suspect with the card numbers.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported 27 incidents of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

In a Senate Tourism and Hospitality Committee hearing March 4, State Comptroller Susana Mendoza said she is hopeful outdoor events can return as early as this summer with large indoor events such as conventions and trade shows beginning in the fall.

Mendoza said that the return to holding events would be gradual and based on a number of factors, including COVID-19 transmission and vaccination rates.

“We’re on a favorable trajectory in the pandemic,” Mendoza told the committee. “Let’s continue to prepare for the worst and plan for the best and optimally position ourselves to reopen with greater capacity sooner rather than later.”

The state’s COVID-19 seven-day rolling average was near a pandemic-low 2.4 percent for the sixth consecutive day Thursday, while hospitalizations continued to decrease and about 7.5 percent of the state’s population had been fully vaccinated.

Mendoza said she is hopeful the governor’s office will be receptive to a wider reopening approach this year.

“Working now in concert with industry shareholders, organized labor, the legislature, of course, and the administration on agreed safety measures is a sensible course,” she said.

Mendoza said allowing events and gatherings to resume safely in a quick and efficient manner would be key to jumpstarting an economic turnaround following the COVID-19 pandemic as the state works to return to a full reopening.

“My job, as you know, is to pay the state’s bills, which is hard to do when businesses close and people lose their jobs, and neither the businesses nor the employees are in any position to pay taxes,” Mendoza said.

Citing numbers from the state’s tourism office, Mendoza said COVID-19-related shutdowns and event cancellations cost the state nearly a $500 million in tax revenue over the past year. Prior to the pandemic, tourism in the state brought in nearly $2.5 billion in sales tax revenue annually, she said.

Mendoza also said state hotel revenue fell from $300 million in fiscal year 2019 to $250 million in fiscal year 2020. In the first six months of the current fiscal year, the state has only brought in $42.5 million in hotel tax revenue, she said.

“This is economic activity that we need to nurture and sustain to the best of our abilities while we combat the pandemic,” Mendoza added.

Mendoza cited recent decisions by the National Restaurant Association and the International Housewares Association to cancel their annual conventions in the state as an example of how the state could lose out on key income if large-scale events do not return in some capacity in 2021.

Some business leaders told the committee that they have been set back by the state’s current cap of 50 people for event gatherings under Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois guidelines. Phase 5 of the reopening plan would allow for a return of large-scale events with the necessary safety precautions, pending the widespread availability of a COVID-19 vaccine or treatment.

As a result of the federal government moving up projections that a vaccine could be available to the entire population by the end of May, business leaders asked the committee for a “ramp” approach to reopening under Phase 5 to allow events to resume in some capacity as soon as possible.

“I don’t think we need to have capacity limits,” Bob Reiter, president of the Chicago Federation of Labor told the committee on Thursday. “We need to have percentages that account for actual spaces.”

In the “ramp” approach, Reiter asked that public health guidelines on event gatherings be made more flexible as the state works towards the next phase of reopening amid vaccinations and a declining positivity rate.

“I think we can move past that benchmark and set other benchmarks that get us closer to full capacity as the vaccines work their way through the system,” Reiter said.

Mendoza expressed confidence that the state could exercise flexibility in allowing events to return as early as this summer.

“As more and more of our people are vaccinated and Illinois continues in a positive direction, it’s really gratifying for me to hear that outdoor events like the State Fair this summer are a very real possibility,” Mendoza said.

On Saturday, Jan. 23 at approximately 10:46 p.m., officers responded to a report of a vehicular hijacking near the Popeye’s restaurant in Addison.

Upon their arrival, officers learned that the victim, a 20-year-old female, had been walking through the restaurant’s parking lot when she was approached by three individuals, two of whom were armed. It is alleged that the individuals threatened her to give up her cash, cellular telephone and car keys or they would kill her. It is further alleged that after the victim turned over her belongings to the defendants, all three individuals got into her car and fled at a high rate of speed.

As the defendants allegedly fled, a nearby patrol officer began pursuit and, with assistance from the Illinois State Police and their helicopter, was

able to track the vehicle to the south side of Chicago.

It is further alleged that when officers approached the vehicle, the individuals fled the scene on foot. One of the suspects was apprehended at this time by assisting Chicago Police officers while the other two suspects were able to avoid apprehension. On Sunday, Jan. 31, Addison police officers, with assistance from the Chicago Police Department, took the second juvenile into custody while executing a search warrant at the juvenile’s home.

Both juveniles are presently in custody at the St. Charles Juvenile Detention Center. The State has filed a motion to have the first of the two juveniles transferred to adult court while the second juvenile will remain in Juvenile Court.

On Wednesday, Feb. 24, the third juvenile was located in Madison, Wis., and arrested by local authorities. On Monday, March 1, officers with the

Addison Police Department returned the juvenile to DuPage County to face the charges against him.

“The apprehension of the third and final suspect in this case demonstrates DuPage County Law Enforcement’s commitment to fighting crime and our determination in achieving justice,” Berlin said. “The outstanding cooperation and teamwork demonstrated by all the agencies involved sends the message that we will use every tool at our disposal to apprehend, charge and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law anyone suspected of committing a violent crime, as is alleged in this case.”

The juvenile’s next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, for status in front of Judge Jacobs.

American Rescue Plan Act passes U.S. House

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi I’m proud to relay to you that the American Rescue Plan Act, which I supported, passed the House the last week of February.

This package will provide muchneeded relief to American families still struggling from the Coronavirus pandemic. It includes individual stimulus checks up to $1,400, extended unemployment programs with benefit increases of up to $400 per week, $20 billion for COVID-19 vaccine distribution, $30 billion in emergency rental assistance, and $50 billion for COVID-19 testing.

Within this package, I spearheaded provisions for state and local aid and for health care worker mental wellness.

Through my position on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, I championed the inclusion of $350 billion for state and local governments, territories, and tribes.

This state and local aid will be used to help governments avoid cuts to essential services and staff, including police, firefighters, and teachers.

Another provision I authored within this bill provides $40 million for health providers to create or enhance programs that provide mental health care for their workers.

This provision is similar to my Coronavirus Health Care Worker Wellness Act, which I introduced last Congress.

Fundamentally, we need to support our healthcare heroes as they face the challenges of fighting the pandemic on the frontlines, with

all the stress and risk of burnout that come with it.

Oversight Committee hearing on the U.S. Postal Service Recently, I questioned Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in the House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing on the delays in USPS services.

According to USPS data, the performance of the USPS declined upon the arrival of Postmaster General DeJoy in June 2020. In January 2020, 90 percent of two-day local first-class mail was delivered on time, declining to 70 percent in December 2020. Similarly, 80 percent of 3-5 day nonlocal firstclass mail was delivered on time in January 2020 but declined to 40 percent in December 2020.

Mr. DeJoy did not have an explanation for this decline in service and refused to commit to preserving the current two-day delivery standard for local first-class mail.

I was troubled by the responses I received from my constituents through social media citing instances of delayed mail, such as medication, which caused reallife consequences for them. I will continue to investigate and provide oversight on the USPS so that every family can continue to rely on this American institution.

Local hospital to receive additional doses of COVID-19 vaccine As COVID-19 vaccination distribution ramps up, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) is pleased to announce that the AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center in Glendale Oaks is set to receive 300 to 500 more doses of the vaccine per week thanks to a new pilot program to reach underserved communities.

“I’m pleased to see that AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center in the 23rd District is one of the hospitals receiving additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccine,” Cullerton said. “The pilot program is a strong step in the right direction to ensuring people across our communities have access to this vital vaccine to help end this awful pandemic.”

The new pilot program comes from a partnership between Gov. Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Public Health and federally qualified health centers and safety net hospitals across the state. The hospitals

chosen for the first round of the pilot program were determined using IDPH’s COVID-19 Community Vulnerability Index and local vaccination rates.

“Providing support to communities hit hardest by COVID-19 is essential. These additional doses are so important to raising our vaccination rates and getting everybody protected against this virus,” Cullerton said.

I can stay in this cycle of grief; I can give up and only look backwards. Or I can decide that grief 24/7 — forever — isn’t for me or for anyone. I can decide to take tiny steps forward. For myself. For our kids. For our grandkids.

I choose the latter.

I will never (not ever) forget the years we had together. I will always (as in the infinite always) love you. I will see you and be with you again. You will be there to greet me. I have no doubt about that. You are watching over me now. I trust you are. I talk to you daily. Our love continues to grow. I feel your presence and I know you are near.

But I can’t live in the past. It hurts too much, for myself and those here who still love me.

We had a great run, you and I. (I take delight now knowing that you understand I why chose I over me in the previous sentence. Grammar

gurus we both were. I loved that about you.)

I’d live my life with you a second time in a heartbeat, even if I knew the outcome. You were my everything. You still are. You always will be.

But now I have to step forward, into the unknown. The path we’d chosen, the path we’d planned on, the path I thought was cemented in stone no longer exists. It is gone.

I have to create a new path, even a new me. I have to forge new relationships and do the things you always used to do for me. I have to push myself and challenge my comfort zone.

You were the second half of my whole; that will never, ever change, but there is room for more living.

And I have to pursue a life that goes forward.

Oh my goodness do I wish it included you. With my whole heart, I wish that. But wishes are for the foolish. Faith is for the goodhearted.

I have faith. I have faith in the future. In my future. I have faith in us. We will be there forever, for the long haul. Forever and always. I believe that to the core of my being.

But there is a reason why I am here and you are there —there are probably many reasons. And, if I

Doris Haesemeyer, 93 On Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, Doris Haesemeyer went to be with the Lord. She was 93 years young. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Haesemeyer and Louise Licht Haesemeyer, as well as her sister, Margaret Haesemeyer (Andrew) Novosad and niece Deborah Novosad (John) Bartuska. Known

as Auntie to many, Doris was the fond aunt to Steven (Susan) Novosad and Russell (Gail) Novosad. The great aunt of Laura (Chris) Bartuska, Carolyn Bartuska, Jack Bartuska, and Sara (Filip) Novosad Kojic, Andrew Novosad, Alyssa Novosad, and Nicholas (Kaitlyn) Novosad and Kathryn Novosad. She was a great, great aunt to William and Abby Dervinis and Owen, Emily, Margaret and Zachary Novosad.

Doris was born in Stanwood, Iowa. After attending Stanwood High School, she went on to graduate from the University of Iowa. She moved from Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Elmhurst in 1956, where she worked as an executive secretary for the O-T-D Corporation until retirement.

Doris loved and lived life to its fullest. She was a season subscription holder to the Lyric Opera and CSO. Besides those venues, Doris along with her sister and friends would attend many plays throughout the suburbs always enjoying lunch or dinner afterwards.

Before and after retirement, Doris and a group of friends traveled the world, visiting six of the seven continents. She took up the game of golf after retirement and was in a Tuesday morning golf league up until two years ago. It is during this time she met and became good friends with Pat, Peg, and Barb.

Doris was a huge University of Iowa football and basketball fan.

She rarely missed a Hawkeyes, Bears, Bulls or Cubs game on TV.

She only complained when there wasn’t a game on TV today!

Doris lived in her house in Elmhurst for 50 years. She was the matriarch of the neighbor.

Everyone loved Doris and admired her gardens. She made many special friends in the neighborhood by walking her dogs and always bringing a plate of cookies to new neighbors. This is how she met Amy who became her wonderful friend. She was also very thankful for her good friend and handyman, Bill. Both Amy and Bill along with many other neighbors looked out for her which helped her stay in her house until the end. On her 93rd birthday last year, due to COVID-19, a drive-by birthday parade was arranged, complete with a police escort.

One of Doris’ special requests was, “At the closing hymn, I want the organ to play ‘Ode to Joy’ from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony because it will be my most joyous moment to be going to heaven to be with my Lord and I want all of you to be joyous too.”

A memorial service will be held later at Redeemer Lutheran Church due to COVID-19. Interment will be at Stanwood Cemetery, Stanwood, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, Doris has requested that donations be sent to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 123 E St Charles Rd, Elmhurst, IL 60126.

Humana is notifying approximately 65,000 health plan members, including approximately 3,600 in Illinois, that personal information may have been exposed when a subcontractor’s employee inappropriately disclosed medical records to unauthorized individuals.

Cotiviti is a company that helps Humana request medical records needed to verify data reported to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Cotiviti in turn uses a subcontractor to review the collected medical records. An employee of that subcontractor, who was authorized to access and use the data for Humana purposes, inappropriately disclosed information to unapproved individuals for unauthorized training purposes between Oct. 12, 2020 and Dec. 16, 2020. Humana was informed on Dec. 22, 2020.

The subcontractor immediately disabled the access of the now former employee. Both Cotiviti and its subcontractor put in place a broad strategy to prevent any further unauthorized disclosure of information. Humana also worked with Cotiviti to ensure it took immediate steps to enhance protections and secure personal information now and into the future. To help prevent something like this from happening again, Humana took prompt action to ensure the appropriate physical and technical safeguards are in place at Cotiviti and its subcontractor.

Information including name, date of birth, Social Security Number (full or partial), address, phone number, email address, insurance identification numbers, provider name, date of service, medical record number, treatment information and imagery (x-ray, photographs, etc.) may have been part of

More than 212,000 vaccine doses administered to DuPage County residents As of Wednesday, March 3, more than 212,635 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine had been administered to DuPage County residents and 147,031 residents have received at least one dose of vaccine. Of those vaccinated, 65,604 people, or 7.06 percent, have received second doses and are fully vaccinated. This represents the administration of 48,304 doses of vaccine in the past week to DuPage County residents.

The network of vaccination provider sites in DuPage County, including the DCHD Community Vaccination Clinic, currently has the capacity to administer more than 50,000 doses each week once vaccine supply allows. However, DuPage County only received 8,500 first doses last week. From this allocation, 1,300 doses were distributed to medical practices, 800 doses were distributed to Federally Qualified Health Centers, 4,500 doses were distributed to hospitals, 1,000 doses were distributed to pharmacies, 500 doses were distributed to commercial vaccination providers, 100 doses were distributed to urgent care providers, and 300 doses are supplying the DCHD Community Vaccination Clinic. Additional county-specific vaccine data, including first dose allocations by week and allocations by provider type, are available on the COVID-19 Dashboard at dupagehealth.org/covid19data.

Notably, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the Johnson and Johnson Janssen vaccine on Saturday, February 27, making it the third COVID-19 vaccine to receive an EUA from the FDA. In clinical trials, all three vaccines were highly efficacious in preventing severe COVID-19 illness, hospitalization, and death. Once Janssen doses are shipped to DuPage County, this vaccine will be distributed to various providers.

“We are thrilled to now have a third safe and effective vaccine

available to us in our COVID-19 response toolkit,” said Karen Ayala, Executive Director of DuPage County Health Department. “Each of the vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna and Janssen) can save lives and protect against COVID-19, so we urge eligible residents to take advantage of the first available vaccine appointment.

“While we work to get more people vaccinated, we’re also concerned about an uptick this week in our case activity, so we must all continue following the 3 Ws by wearing a mask, watching our distance, and washing our hands. These public health measures are especially important as new variants of COVID-19 have been identified throughout the country, including here in Illinois and DuPage County.”

As of March 4, seniors ages 65 and older can schedule an appointment at the United Center mass vaccination site for the COVID-19 vaccine. You do not need to live in Chicago to make an appointment at this site. The United Center site will be offering more than 100,000 vaccine appointments. Anyone eligible for COVID-19 vaccination in Phase 1a or 1b and lives or works in DuPage County should register on DCHD’s website to be notified of upcoming appointments at dupagehealth.org/covid19vaccine or call (630) 682-7400 if assistance is needed with registration (i.e., no internet or computer access, language assistance, or have questions). People previously registered to receive the vaccine through DCHD will notice an update to the registration system in

the next 24 hours as DCHD ensures it has the most current information from everyone who is registered.

The upgrade offers an opportunity to confirm interest in the vaccine, update current contact information, or opt-out from the registration list if they have already been vaccinated.

Individuals are also encouraged to contact their primary care doctor or local retail pharmacy for vaccine and appointment availability and explore additional opportunities through other vaccine providers in the area. Until vaccine supply increases, DuPage County will not be expanding to the Phase 1b Plus group that includes individuals ages 16–64 years with co-morbidities and underlying conditions, as well as individuals with disabilities. The County will expand when vaccine supply significantly increases, demand in the current group declines, or a significant proportion of the current group is vaccinated. Based on national reports and trends shared from IDPH, DCHD expects the vaccine supply will increase over the next few weeks, and additional new first dose appointments will become more accessible later this month.

As residents wait for vaccine to be available to them, the Health Department urges everyone to do their part in preventing the spread of COVID-19 including the new variants by wearing face masks, physical distancing, avoiding in-person gatherings, washing their hands, and isolating or quarantining when necessary. Everyone, including those who have been vaccinated, should continue using these measures to help end this pandemic as we learn more about how COVID-19 vaccines work in real-world conditions.

It’s Not an Indulgence, it’s a Necessity.

According to the National Institute on Aging, taking care of yourself is one of the most important things you can do as a caregiver. Make sure you take time for yourself—and ask for help when (or before) you need it!

The same is true of caring for a loved one with dementia: If you don’t allow yourself to stop and catch your breath, you’ll both be headed for a tailspin. Being a caregiver is a constant stressor. Stopping to take some “me time” isn’t an indulgence, it’s a necessity.

Appreciate the magnitude of the stress you’re under.

Caregivers who provide substantial care to a loved one with memory care or assisted living needs—involvement with health care activities, care coordination and medication management—are more likely to develop physical and emotional health problems themselves, according to a National Health and Aging Trends Study.

Taking care of yourself is one of the most important things you can do as a caregiver.

Make sure you are making time for yourself, eating healthy foods and being active.

Consider joining a caregiver support group to relieve your sense of isolation.

Report: Illinois’ pension debt tops $300 billion Long-term economic outlook shows challenges ahead indebtedness, Moody’s estimates the state’s total liability ratio will amount to 48 percent of GDP for the fiscal year 2021 reporting cycle.

The report says that 80 percent of the increase is attributable to falling interest rates, but weaker-than-expected investment performance also played a role. The Illinois Teachers’ Retirement System, the largest of the five pension systems, reported investment returns of just 0.52 percent during the reporting period, far below its target of 7 percent.

“Illinois is an outlier among states both for fiscal challenges from pension expenses and for its limited capacity to modify the benefit packages that drive these expenses,” the report states. “The state allocates about 30 percent of its budget to retirement benefits and debt service, a ‘fixed-cost’ ratio more than three times the median for states, and its constitution gives public workers some of the most ironclad retirement benefit protections available.”

A new report by the credit rating agency Moody’s says Illinois will set a new record this year when it reports a total net pension liability of more than $300 billion, the highest of any state in the nation.

As of June 30, 2020, the report stated, the total unfunded liabilities of the state’s five pension systems stood at $317 billion, a 19 percent increase from the prior year. That was largely due to historically low interest rates, which have depressed pension fund earnings throughout the country.

With the state’s gross domestic product, or GDP, estimated to have fallen 2.5 percent in calendar year 2020, that pension liability amounts to roughly 37 percent of the state’s total economic output, up from a range of 28-32 percent over the previous four years.

When combined with other long-term liabilities, including retiree health care and bonded

that the state contributes to its pension funds is actually far less than what is needed to prevent continuing growth in their unfunded liabilities.

Under current law, the contribution amounts are set each year at a rate aimed at achieving a 90 percent funded ratio by 2045.

The report also notes that Gov. JB Pritzker’s proposed budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 lacks any broad plan to address the state’s pension debt. But it also gave him credit for not suggesting the state scale back on pension payments over the short term to alleviate fiscal pressure brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a separate report to the state’s Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, or COGFA, the consulting firm Moody’s Analytics, a subsidiary of Moody’s Corp., said the state’s fiscal condition could hamper its ability to recover smoothly from the recession.

“Weak public finances mean Illinois will

have to make extraordinary fiscal adjustments that leave it playing catch-up in the next business cycle,” the report stated. “Population loss and troubled state finances will limit Illinois’ long-term potential.”

The report says the state’s economy is expected to start recovering in earnest around mid-year and the unemployment rate should be under 6 percent by the end of the year, which would be in line with the national average but higher than other Midwest states.

How quickly the economy recovers will largely depend on how quickly the COVID-19 vaccines are delivered and how quickly the U.S. population as a whole achieves “herd immunity,” which is currently projected to happen by the fall.

“The economy should quickly kick into an extended period of strong growth as people shed their fear of getting sick and get back to doing what they did before the pandemic,” the report stated.

Benefits for some unemployed state residents provided under an aid program targeting mostly self-employed and gig workers will be capped at 50 weeks instead of 57, the state announced March 3.

The shortened period for benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance

The PUA program, which was first established by Congress last March, offers benefits to independent contractors, self-employed individuals, gig workers and others not covered by traditional state unemployment insurance.

December, eligible individuals could receive up to 57 weeks of PUA benefits. The law passed in December, the Continued Assistance Act, also extended regular state unemployment insurance benefits by seven weeks.

Both those seven-week benefit extensions have ended, according to a state news release.

This means individuals eligible for PUA will receive up to 50 weeks of benefits, and those eligible for extended regular state unemployment insurance benefits will receive up to 13 weeks of benefits.

Roughly 40,000 individuals have been notified that they have exhausted their 50 weeks of PUA, according to Rebecca Cisco, a spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

“IDES will continue to notify PUA claimants as they approach the 50-week limit.

And, of course, the Department is closely monitoring activity at the federal level in the event new legislation includes extensions or changes to the PUA program,” Cisco wrote in an email.

Individuals who qualify for PUA but have not yet received some of their benefits will only be eligible for benefits through April 10, Acting IDES Director Kristin Richards said in response to a question during a virtual

joint committee hearing Wednesday.

Richards said the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics determined that the average unemployment rate for October, November and December fell below 8 percent.

“The federal government made a determination based on unemployment data from the state of Illinois, over a three-month average,” Richards said.

“They evaluate all this data and arrive at a conclusion. And that conclusion was that we were triggering off this high unemployment period.”

Under federal law, states are only able to access two seven-week extensions if the state is in a so-called “high unemployment period.” An IDES spokesperson did not immediately respond to an email seeking clarification on what constituted a high unemployment period.

The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates in Illinois for October, November, and December were 7.5 percent, 7.6 percent and 7.9 percent, respectively, according to Department of Labor data.

Marilynn Gardner, president and CEO of Navy Pier Inc., told the committee that allowing Illinois’ flagship tourist attraction as well as the city’s McCormick Place convention center to reopen in at least partial capacity would be “critical” to an economic rebound for the entire state.

Gardner said the closure of the pier’s restaurants, theaters and attractions, as well as a shortened 2020 season, led to a 25 percent loss in revenue for Navy Pier last year.

“During this period, with every source of earned revenue diminished or suspended, we now face the harsh reality of potentially being forced to close permanently, and we can’t let that happen,” Gardner said.

“We need to start ramping up, we need to

start hiring, start cleaning, and preparing for the season” Gardner added. “The health and safety of our community remains our top priority, but we also have to focus on the devastating impact on our ability to support the livelihoods and quality of life in our community.”

Mendoza said reopening McCormick Place, which was once the site of a temporary field hospital at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, would be symbolic of the state’s economic turnaround and reopening following the adversity of 2020.

“All of us, Democrats and Republicans, from Chicago to Galena to Cairo, we all agree we need to do whatever we can within appropriate safety protocols to gradually open this critical segment of our economy again,” she said.

About 9 percent of DuPage County residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 More than 250,000 doses administered in the county

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) daily COVID-19 update from March 7 reported that about 9 percent of DuPage County’s population has been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.

The IDPH stated that as of March 7, 83,888 DuPage County residents (out of the county’s total reported population of 928,589) had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The IDPH report from the same day related that a total of 252,185 COVID-19 vaccine doses has been administered to county residents.

The IDPH report from one week earlier—Feb. 28—indicated that nearly 60,000 (about 6.44 percent) of DuPage County’s residents had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Letters to the editor Reader says Independent slighted Bram in coverage

The February 25 Elmhurst Independent article covering the Elmhurst League of Women Voters virtual candidates’ forum grossly distorted a comment made by mayoral candidate Michael Bram. Accurate reporting would have noted that he has advocated for Advanced Life Support (ALS) for years.

During the forum, Michael Bram stated, “I want to allow our firefighter/ paramedics to be able to provide Advanced Life Support services to our residents.” Currently, Elmhurst’s firefighter/paramedics are only allowed to provide Basic Life Support (BLS) until a contracted ambulance service with paramedics arrives at a call. It’s troubling that a reporter who watched the forum (either live or recorded) couldn’t bother to correctly quote a candidate. Emily’s dedication to overcoming hurdles was admirable and this project protected property valued at more than $17.5 million in the 6th Ward and protected home values of surrounding properties.

Former public servant praises Levin On April 6th, Elmhurst will be electing a new Mayor. Given the increasing challenges of the State’s fiscal crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and concerns of public safety Elmhurst must choose wisely.

There are three candidates for Mayor, all current Aldermen. All have served Elmhurst for at least a decade. This means they have very public records of that service, and importantly, what they have stood for, pushed for and accomplished over the years. Voters should pay less attention to what the candidates say or promote on their campaign literature, on websites or social media and pay MORE attention to what those aldermen have accomplished.

In my opinion, Scott Levin stands out, particularly in his leadership abilities, and I will be voting for him. I previously worked with Scott while we were both 5th Ward Aldermen. Scott is hard working, dedicated and has a strong record in dealing with previous Elmhurst problems, including the fiscal crunch of the early 2000s and more recently with flooding issues.

Elmhurst will be facing more challenges because of the pandemic, and Scott is the best person to lead Elmhurst through them.

Current Mayor Steve Morley, or any past Mayor, will tell you lead-

ership and communication are the two strongest traits for a Mayor.

A clear indication of the leaders within the Council are those Aldermen appointed to the Committee Chairmen and Vice Chairmen positions.

These positions are nominated by the Mayor and then approved by City Council. These are highly sought-after positions, and appointments are well thought out, based on individuals’ strengths and passions. Alderman Bram, in his 20 years Aldermanic experience, has never been elected as chairman or vice chairman. Scott has been chairman of the Development, Planning & Zoning and the Public Safety Committees and is currently the vice chairman of the Finance Committee. Perhaps most telling of Scott’s leadership ability was in early 2013 when Mayor DiCianni resigned to go on the County Board. Scott was elected by his own Council peers to serve as interim Mayor to complete the term.

That, to me, speaks volumes about Scott’s leadership abilities.

Forest Preserve District begins spring prescription burn season Specially trained crews carry out burns in spring and fall

In coming weeks, specially trained crews from the DuPage Forest Preserve District will be conducting prescription burns at selected sites in the county’s preserves.

Prescription burns are considered an effective natural resource management tool for restoring native prairies, wetlands and woodlands.

Prescription burns generally take place in the early spring before new vegetation emerges and in late fall after the season’s vegetation has died. The forest preserve district’s first purposely set, controlled burn was conducted at Churchill Woods in

Glen Ellyn in the mid-1970s.

Conducting prescription burns depends on the daily weather and other factors, so the district cannot schedule them in advance. Residents who live near planned burn locations receive notices in the mail, and on the morning of a burn, crews post signs and contact local fire departments.

Specially trained crews remain on the site throughout the process, which takes place only during daylight hours. If these factors are not present, the public should call 911 because they may be witnessing a wildfire.

Convicted felon currently on bond charged with being ‘armed habitual criminal’ On Monday, March 8, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced a two-time convicted felon who is currently out on bond out of Cook County will be held on a $150,000 bond with 10% to apply bond after he was allegedly found to be in possession of a loaded handgun. The State had asked that the defendant be held without bond.

Keith Summers, 26, of Wheaton, previously appeared at a bond hearing on Friday, March 5, where the Court granted his request to delay the hearing to allow the defendant to obtain private counsel. Judge John Kinsella presided over this morning’s bond hearing. Summers has been charged with one count of Armed Habitual Criminal (Class X Felony).

Through the course of an investigation into shots fired on Wednesday, Feb. 24 on I-55 at Cicero Avenue, authorities were led to an apartment located at 2 Wheaton Center, which was later identified as an apartment the defendant shares with his girlfriend.

On March 4, the Illinois State Police with assistance from the Wheaton Police Department executed a search warrant at the defendant’s apartment where they allegedly re-

covered a loaded Glock handgun with an extended-round magazine.

It is further alleged that the serial number for the handgun had been removed. Summers was taken into custody at this time.

“As a two-time convicted felon, who is currently out on bond on Armed Habitual Criminal charges, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that Mr. Summers should have been in possession of a handgun, as alleged in this case,” Berlin said.

“The allegation that Mr. Summers continued to break the law while on bond are outrageous and will be met with the full force of the law. The only way to protect the public from a man who has no regard for the rule of law and continues to commit violent crimes while on bond for violent crimes is to hold that individual in custody pending trial.”

Summers’ next court appearance is scheduled for March 24, in front of Judge Kinsella for arraignment.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

York girls badminton team off to strong start Dukes unbeaten thus far; 15-0 winners against Glenbard West

The York girls badminton team has been on point and then some this season.

The Dukes through late last week were unbeaten at all levels with victories against Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Hinsdale Central, Willowbrook, Lyons Township and Glenbard West.

In recent action York was a 15-0 winner at the varsity level, and the Dukes’ junior-varsity team also won 15-0. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, York is playing only teams from within the West Suburban Conference. Girls badminton also was moved to the winter season by the IHSA due to the pandemic. The win over Glenbard West put York at 3-0 in WSC Sil-

ver Division action. York’s closest competition thus far was an 8-7 victory over Hinsdale Central.

Coach Gina Fite’s varsity squad has 10 seniors, a junior and a freshman on it. “Fortunately, almost all the kids returned this year after our season was shut down last March,” Fite said.

Fite pointed out the plug was pulled on last year’s season on Friday the 13th.

Another positive for York is the fact the program has picked up some additional players due to the sport being moved to the winter season. “We acquired a handful of new students who normally would not have come out for badminton because it conflicted with their winter sport,” Fite noted. “Our practices are split, which allowed us to not cut one kid from playing badminton this season.”

Fite added York’s freshman team has 25 players on it.

The attitude and approach to the

season, Fite said, has been nothing short of spectacular. “The varsity is playing great and everyone is working very hard,” she said. “I don’t think any of them are taking this season for granted. They know at any given time the season could be shut down. I am impressed by the community of York badminton players who all are working together to make this season the best they can. Fite said one area of improvement this season has come on the strategic front. “The girls are improving daily,” she said. “Not so much in their stroke fundamentals, but more on strategies for where to place the bird during our rallies and how to move on the court.”

Senior Grace Wilton plays No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. “Grace is strong and quick,” said Fite, who noted Wilton was 5-0 in her first five singles matches and 3-2 on the doubles circuit.

all are leaders and each one contributes in their own unique way,” Fite said.

Freshman Lindsey White had made an immediate varsity splash.

Fite noted White started the season at No. 8 singles and now is playing No. 2 singles. She was 4-1 in her first five singles contests. “Lindsey’s improvements are daily,” the coach said.

Fite added her players have overcome the unique obstacle of wearing a mask. “It is very hard to play with a mask on when you are playing long, hard rallies in badminton,” she said. “I am so impressed by my girls that they have the strong will to fight through the tough matches that require incredible endurance,” she said. “They are really amazing athletes.”

Morton, Lyons Township (conference match) and Hinsdale South are on the docket for the Dukes this week with York traveling to Darien Saturday to face Hinsdale South.

The York boys basketball team got off to a hot start in the West Suburban Conference tournament with a pair of wins.

The Dukes were 52-35 winners against Downers Grove South and then recorded a 51-39 triumph over Hinsdale South.

A day earlier, York upended Lyons Township 51-34. Jeff Grace led the Dukes with 14 points. Nick Hesch added 12 points, while Denton Rhode had eight points.

York also was a 31-29 winner against Proviso West. Grace led the way with 10 points. Drew Kircher had nine points, while Hesch had eight points.

York girls basketball The York girls basketball team also won its first two games in the West Suburban Conference tournament this past weekend.

The Dukes were 69-29 winners against Downers Grove South.

York led 18-9 after the first quarter and 35-16 at halftime. York went up 58-24 after three.

Sophomore Mariann Blass led the Dukes with 21 points and hit six

3-pointers. Sydney Molis added 18 points and hit four 3-pointers. York hit 13 three-pointers in the game.

York also downed Leyden 5027 in the tournament. York led 9-7 after the first quarter and 30-14 at halftime.

Molis had 14 points, while Blass had 10 points, including two 3-pointers. Megan Juneman chipped in six points.

In earlier action, York won by 30 points, 63-33, against Proviso West, in a matchup of WSC Silver Division teams. York led 17-7 after one and 37-9 at halftime.

Juneman led the Dukes with 12 points. Blass had eight and hit two 3s. Junior Emma Wheatland and Kaitlyn Kjome each had seven points.

York also was a 56-31 winner against Oak Park-River Forest.

York led 14-6 after the first quarter and 34-13 at intermission. Juneman led the way with 15 points, while freshman Stella Kohl had six points (1 three-pointer).

Timothy Christian boys basketball The Trojans were 55-50 non-conference winners against Naperville North. Timothy jumped out to a 19-8 first-quarter led, but trailed 23-21 going into halftime. The Trojans outscored North 14-12 in the third and 20-15 in the fourth quarter.

Josh Harris led the Trojans with 22 points, while Ben VanderWal had 17 points. VanderWal hit

two 3-pointers and grabbed 12 rebounds. Trey Keizer had six assists, while Harris had four assists.

In the 53-37 win over IC Catholic Prep, Harris had 16 points, while VanderWal added 10 points. Matija Marinkovich added seven points.

Timothy hit seven 3-pointers in the game. VanderWal pulled in 12 rebounds, while Harris had 11 rebounds. Marinkovich and Stephen Kwasigroch each had five assists.

Timothy also pounded Chicago Christian 80-53 to move to 12-1 overall and 10-0 in games against Metro Suburban Conference foes.

The Trojans led 10-7 after the first quarter and 25-11 at halftime.

Timothy scored 55 points in the second half.

Harris had 22 points. VanderWal had 19 points, while Ben Jones added 17 points. Jerard Starr added seven points. Jones connected on five 3-pointers, while Harris had three. Timothy made 12 three-pointers and shot 41 percent from the 3-point line. VanderWal pulled in 15 rebounds, while Marinkovich and VanderWal each had five assists.

Timothy Christian girls basketball The Timothy Christian girls basketball team dropped a 56-43 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division game to Aurora Christian.

Sureya Alex had 16 points, while Hannah Schuringa had 12 points.

Alex hit three 3-pointers. Grace Roland pulled in seven rebounds,

while Schuringa had six. Maddie Drye and Alex each had four assists.

In a 66-17 win over Chicago Christian, Timothy led 20-2 after the first quarter and 41-6 at halftime.

Schuringa had 19 points on 8 of 9 shooting, while Roland had 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Christina Swiech finished with nine points. Roland pulled in 10 rebounds, while Schuringa had eight rebounds. Alex had four assists and Schuringa had three steals.

Timothy also was a 61-48 winner over Riverside-Brookfield. The game was tied 28-28 after the first half, but Timothy used a 24-15 third quarter and a 9-5 fourth quarter to seal it.

Schuringa had 17 points, while Alex had 16 points. Roland added 12 points and Drye had 10 as the Trojans had four players score in double figures.

Timothy hit 10 three-pointers in the game. Alex had four, while Drye, Roland and sophomore Mili Martens each had two. Roland had 11 rebounds, while Schuringa had eight.

Alex had nine assists. Eighteen of Timothy’s 22 baskets had an assist registered.

The R-B win moved the Trojans to 11-2 overall and 9-1 in the MSC Blue Division standings. Through last weekend, Aurora Christian was 10-1, Timothy 9-1 and IC Catholic Prep 8-1 — all three teams reside in the MSC Blue.

York girls bowling The York girls bowling team closed out its season with a win against Downers Grove South on senior night. Both the York varsity and junior-varsity teams went undefeated this season.

All six York varsity bowlers earned all-West Suburban Conference honors this season, led by Holly Santucci, who repeated as individual WSC champion.

York’s JV team is now 39-0 over five undefeated seasons.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball In a 54-15 non-conference win against Elgin Academy, the Knights led 29-8 at halftime. John Hilgart led IC Catholic Prep with 19 points and nine rebounds.

In a 55-44 win against Elmwood Park, John Hilgart had 18 points, while Michael Hilgart added 11 points.

The Knights also dropped a 5337 game to crosstown neighbor Timothy Christian. IC Catholic Prep led 18-15 after the first quarter and 25-22 at halftime.

The Trojans tied the game at 3232 after three quarters and used a 21-5 fourth-quarter run to secure the win. Danny Roberto had 18 points, while John Hilgart had 13 rebounds.

In a 53-45 loss to Wheaton St. Francis, the Knights trailed 8-7 after the first quarter and 24-16 at halftime. Roberto led the Knights with 13 points.

Fisher said even more impressive is the fact his players continue to compete at a high level with COVID-19 restrictions in place. “I am proud of all of them,” he said. “I am proud of their effort. The hard work is there.

They are making sacrifices. They say it is not easy playing with masks on. I am not the one running up and down the court. I am on the side with a mask on. Give a lot of credit to the kids for doing this.”

IC Catholic Prep recently honored its six seniors on the roster: Johnson, Frankie Chaidez, Grace Grady, Gia Gaudio, Becca Cash and Ciara Stephens.

“Senior night is always one of the highlights of the year,” Fisher said.

“This year it’s even more of a highlight. In a season like this one, something like this is one of the culminating nights of the 20-21 basketball season.”

As of this writing, the Knights were fully aware of being in contention for the Blue title with Timothy and Aurora Christian.

“The kids know and understand,” Fisher said.

IC Catholic Prep’s lone MSC blemish was a 42-41 last-seconds loss to Wheaton Academy. Johnson led the way with 16 points.

“We came into the fourth quarter up by like 15 or 17 points,” IC Catholic Prep coach Todd Fisher said. “They had a kid who we had watched and scouted and she didn’t shoot much from what we saw. We were trying to shut down their main scorers, and we left her open and she knocked down shots. There was a huge momentum swing. We had the momentum going into halftime and were up big going into the fourth with big-time momentum. We made some careless decisions with turnovers and shot selection. Give credit to Wheaton, but we didn’t help ourselves toward the end of that game.”

Fisher said the 8-2 effort through the first 10 games has been impressive.

“Going back to the beginning, what has stood out is you have a team that went from where most teams in Illinois were at with not doing much to, hey, you get five or six practices and then go play,” he said. “The fact that they have picked things up and have gotten better is impressive. I am very happy. They come here every day to work hard and they are great teammates. We are having fun through all this. We have two losses. OK? The main thing is the kids are happy to be playing right now and I am happy to be playing right now. This has all gone quick. A couple a weeks ago the kids said it was the halfway point of the season already and they didn’t realize it. Now we are down to having Bucolo fires a pitch our Anthony last game (tonight).

• Offers to undergo additional medical testing or procedures when obtaining a vaccine • Marketers offering to sell and/ or ship doses of a vaccine, domestically or internationally, in exchange for payment of a deposit or fee • Unsolicited emails, telephone calls, or personal contact from someone claiming to be from a medical office, insurance company, or COVID-19 vaccine center requesting personal and/or medical

information to determine recipients’ eligibility to participate in clinical vaccine trials or obtain the vaccine • Claims of FDA approval for a vaccine that cannot be verified • Advertisements for vaccines through social media platforms, email, telephone calls, online or from unsolicited/unknown sources • Individuals contacting you in person, by phone or email to tell you that the government or gov-

ernment officials require you to receive a COVID-19 vaccine Protect yourself. Follow these important tips to avoid being scammed: • Seek legitimate information about coronavirus and available vaccines from your local health department, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Illinois Department of Public Health or check our coronavirus vaccine page.

• Talk to your primary care doctor about how to get the vaccine.

• Do not share your personal information or health information with anyone except known and trusted medical professionals.

• Do not pay anyone for the vaccine or a place in line to receive the vaccine. Any vaccine provided by the federal government will be free. Some providers, such as retail pharmacies, may charge an administrative fee that could be covered by medical insurance. No one can be denied the vaccine if they are unable to pay the vaccine administration fee.

• Update your computer’s anti-malware and anti-virus programs and check your internet network security frequently.

• Verify websites and email addresses that look legitimate but may be imposters.

• Never open emails, links or attachments from unknown sources.

Everyone’s patience is being tested by the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. But it will get better and, eventually, the vaccine will be available to anyone who wants it.

The first COVID-19 vaccinations in DuPage County were administered on Dec. 16, 2020.

The IDPH update from March 7 reported there have been 20,763 confirmed deaths related to COVID-19 in Illinois. According to the IDPH, about 48 percent (9,894) of those deaths involved residents and staff of long-term care facilities.

The IDPH reported that the COVID-19 test positivity seven-day rolling average in Region 8 (DuPage and Kane counties) stood at 3.6 percent on Feb. 28. The region’s daily positivity rate was 3.3 percent on Feb. 27, and 4.6 percent on Feb. 28.

On March 1, the region’s daily test positivity rate was 6.9 percent, with 309 positive tests out of 4,494 total tests. One day later, on March 2, the daily positivity rate was 8.5 percent, with 472 positive tests out of 5,557 total tests.

One day after Region 8 reported a daily test positivity rate of 8.5 percent, the daily rate was 2.9 percent.

According to the IDPH, the results from March 3 indicated the positivity rate of 2.9 percent, with 199 positive tests out of 6,831 total tests.

On March 4, the daily test positivity rate was 3 percent, with 234 positive tests out of 7,711 total tests.
