Facebook helps police ID offender with suspect handgun

According to a release from the City of Elmhurst, Police Chief Michael Ruth reports the arrest of a 15-year-old juvenile from Hammond, Ind., in relation to an armed robbery that occurred on the 100 block of E. North Avenue in Elmhurst on the evening of Nov. 27, 2017.

The Elmhurst Police Department conducted an investigation after the victim reported to police that he responded to a Facebook post offering an I-Phone 7 for sale. The victim met with two people, described as male/blacks wearing black hoodies on the 100 block of E. North Ave. One of the suspects produced a handgun, announced a robbery, stole the victim’s cash, and both fled. The investigation revealed the suspects fled the scene in a 2006 Chevrolet van, which had been reported stolen from Hammond, Ind. On Nov. 28, Elmhurst detectives responded to assist the South Holland Police Department, which had recovered the stolen van and pursued several suspects fleeing from the vehicle. A weapon matching the description of the handgun used in the Elmhurst robbery was recovered. Elmhurst detectives served search warrants on Facebook for account information related to the ruse robbery transaction, which identified the 15-year-old Hammond juvenile offender and showed him in possession of the handgun.

The juvenile offender was recently taken into custody in Cook County for an unrelated weapons offense and transferred to DuPage County authorities. The juvenile offender appeared in DuPage County Juvenile Court for the Elmhurst Armed Robbery case on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Elmhurst residents are reminded that on-line transactions that require a face-to-face meeting can always take place in the lobby of the Elmhurst Police Station. The police lobby provides a safe environment for these transactions and is staffed 24 hours a day.

Elmhurst Police, Fire Departments earn ‘Run of the Month’ from hospital Elmhurst Hospital’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has awarded its “Run of the Month” for August 2017 to the Elmhurst Fire Dept., Oakbrook Terrace Fire District and Elmhurst Police Dept.

Fire and police personnel were recognized for their care of a patient who was involved in a single-vehicle rollover accident on Roosevelt Rd. in Elmhurst in August of 2017.

The Oakbrook Terrace Fire District and Elmhurst Police Dept. were first to arrive on the scene. Oakbrook Terrace personnel removed the pa-

tient from the vehicle. Elmhurst Fire Dept. firefighter/paramedics treated the patient and took him to the Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Dept.

He was later transferred to a Level 1 Trauma Center, where he passed away due to his critical injuries.

In the “Run of the Month” program, Elmhurst Hospital’s EMS Team reviews ambulance runs by pre-hospital providers and selects one to be recognized based on certain criteria such as communication, cooperation, documentation, clinical assessment, etc.

Nybo amendment to Annie LeGere Law approved by Senate The Annie LeGere Law is another step closer to implementation as an amendment sponsored by State Senator Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) seeks to increase participation of medical professionals in the program that would place epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPens) in the hands of law enforcement across the state. The amendment was approved unanimously by the State Senate on February 21.

“The EpiPen program is a vital public health measure that has a proven need, and can truly mean the difference between life and death in the case of a fatal allergic reaction,” said Nybo. “Elmhurst Police Department has already budgeted for the EpiPens and extensive device training—the only challenge presented is the hesitance from health professionals to provide the prescriptions and approve the training courses.

“After hearing their feedback, I believe Senate Bill 2226 will offer them the liability protection and coverage they need to join our initiative.”

The amendment specifies that any physician, physician’s assistant or advanced practice registered nurse with prescriptive authority who issues a prescription or standing order for epinephrine to an Illinois police department will not be subject to civil or professional liability for law enforcement’s misuse of the medication.

The Annie LeGere Law, effective as of January 2017, allows for Illinois police officers to carry and administer EpiPens on duty as an emergency measure to reverse life-threatening allergic reactions following proper training and procedural requirements. The legislation was inspired by Elmhurst’s own Annie LeGere, a 13-year-old who passed away from a fatal allergic reaction that could have been prevented by epinephrine.

Senate Bill 2226 was approved by the State Senate, and now State Representative Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) will sponsor it in the House of Representatives.

Obituaries

Nancy D. Burton Nancy D. Burton, nee Dray, passed away recently after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born in Boston to Gertrude and Michael Dray.

Nancy graduated with a mathematics degree from Emmanuel College. She met her beloved husband Jack when they were both stationed in Germany working for the United States Army. Married in Boston in 1959, Nancy and Jack moved to the Chicago area shortly thereafter. They raised their four children on Kenilworth Avenue, where they lived until 2014. Nancy was a volunteer in numerous Elmhurst organizations.

Nancy was the beloved wife of the late Jack; loving mother of Michael (Sheila) Burton, Deidre (William) Weiler, Betsy (Christopher) Kelly and Megan (Mark) Polach; proud grandmother of Thomas, Molly and Caroline Burton; Nicholas and Daniel Weiler; Rachel and Sarah Kelly; and Amanda and Keira Polach; dear sister of Betsey Falvey and the late Robert and Richard Dray; and a friend to many. Nancy will always be remembered for her upbeat personality, thoughtfulness, and ability to go out of her way to greet anyone, even a stranger, to brighten their day.

Her spirit will live on in all those she touched. Her contagious sparkle and smile will be missed by many.

Visitation will be on Friday, March 2, 2018, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m., at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 South York Road. Friends and family will meet for a Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, March 3, 2018, 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 134 Arthur St, Elmhurst.

Mischnick, 99, a 55year resident of Elmhurst, and previously, a 44-year resident of Maywood, where he was born on Feb. 16, 1919. He graduated from Irving Elementary School in 1932, and Proviso High School (East), class of 1937. Marvin survived the tornado of 1920 that passed through Maywood and Melrose Park. He was a veteran of World War II and a life member of the Winfield Scott V.F.W. Post 2193 of Maywood and Melrose Park, Central Leyden Post 5979 River Grove, the 3rd Armored Division Associates, Veterans of The Battle Of The Bulge Association, and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his mother Margaret Frega Mischnick, his father Herman (Harry) Mischnick, his brother, LaVerne Harris Mischnick, and his wife, Elaine Boettcher Mischnick.

He is survived by a few cousins, and a few sisters-in-law, a brother-

in-law, a nephew and niece, three great-nieces, and one great-nephew.

Marvin used to take candid pictures at weddings and was the first to photograph kids on Santa Claus’s lap in the department stores. He was 8 years old when Charles A. Lindbergh made his trans-atlantic solo flight from New York to Paris in 1927. Before that flight, Lindbergh flew the air mail from St. Louis to Chicago in 1926, and used “Checkerboard Field” in Maywood not far from where Marvin lived.

Marvin remembered Will Rogers and Wiley Post’s air crash in Point Barrow, Alaska. Marvin personally knew the great football player, Harold “Red” Grange, “The Galloping Ghost.”

At the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Marvin was already serving in the army, and it led to four and a half years with the 3rd Armored “Spearhead” Division. He participated in the landing at “Omaha Beach” in Normandy, France, on D-Day plus 18; for invasion of Fortress Europe for the liberation of France and Belgium; and the capture and occupation of Germany after the defeat of the Nazis. He served as the Division photographer in the

G-2 intelligence section of the forward echelon, in the 23rd Armored Engineers Battalion in the U.S. First Army. He was awarded five battle stars for the European Theatre Medal, the presidential citation with two Oak Leaf clusters, the American Theatre Medal, the American Defense Medal, the Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal and the Germany Occupation Medal and French and Belgium decorations. He was proud to have served under General Dwight D. Eisenhower.

He had been photographed with many well-known dignitaries such as President Harry S. Truman, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Omar N. Bradley and others; and celebrities like Joe Louis, Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, Jack Benny and others.

Marvin’s works related to his experiences during World War II can be found at the web address 3ad. com. He served with the Third Armored Division, which was the spearhead of all the allied armies on the western front and was the first unit to breach the Ziegfried Line. It was the unit that captured the city of Cologne; the Nazi Armored Force Headquarters at Paderborn; and the

liberation of the concentration camp “Dora” at Nordhausen. The division advanced all the way to the Elbe River at Dessau, to where the U.S. first army met the Russians coming from the east.

Marvin was a charter member of the National World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. Marvin loved music and songs of the 1930’s and 1940’s and the early 1950’s, especially the music of the big dance bands. He played the harmonica and, with two high school friends, started a trio called “The HARMONICRATS.” A year or two later, another group became professionally known as “THE HARMONICATS.” Marvin was also a movie buff. Some of his photographs were published in the local Elmhurst newspapers several years ago. Regarding sports, over the course of his life, Marvin was a high school wrestler, a weight-lifter at the YMCA, and enjoyed ice hockey, baseball and softball.

Lincoln School holds STEaMFEST 2018 for K-2 On Thursday, Feb. 22, Lincoln Elementary held STEaMFEST 2018 for the students in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade. This year’s event theme was “Did You Ever Wonder? Marvels in Nature.”

The students worked in small groups and conducted various experiments related to S.T.E.M. curriculum, that is, science, technology,

engineering and math. Among the lessons were: a Tornado in a Bottle (they get to take it home); Cloud in a Bottle; Homemade Thermometer; Reversing Images in Water; Making Rainbows to Reflect on the Ceiling; and, Sunset in a Glass to See Different Wavelengths. There was also a table exercise with disappearing glass.

Project to be unveiled in June 2018

The Elmhurst Art Museum announced last week that the highly-anticipated restoration of the original facade of Mies van der Rohe’s 1952 McCormick House, where the museum is located, will be unveiled in June 2018. The iconic carport entrance of this historically significant building -- one of only three single-family houses built by Mies van der Rohe in the U.S. -- will be visible for the first time in more than 20 years, having been obscured by an addition connecting it to the Museum since 1997.

Elmhurst’s Heritage Architecture Studio is working with Museum Executive Director John McKinnon to oversee the historic preservation by Berglund Construction. This unveiling marks a major transformation of the house, and one part of a multi-phase restoration plan which will continue with the interior at a later date.

“Through this restoration, the Elmhurst Art Museum aims to honor and revitalize the original designs by Mies van der Rohe, while better educating and inspiring generations to come,” said McKinnon. “As the only contemporary art center in the U.S. that oversees a building designed by Mies, we have a unique responsibility and programming opportunity.

Each of our rotating exhibitions, talks, and other programs build on the legacy of the house in a new way. This aspect of the Museum’s mission will be more visible after the construction.”

Unveiling will feature Seeing Red, ‘an architectural intervention’ In tandem with the revelation of the building’s full exterior for the first time in over 20 years, internationally acclaimed artist Iñigo ManglanoOvalle will create Seeing Red, a stunning architectural intervention within the McCormick House that builds on an idea of the original developers Robert Hall McCormick and Herbert S. Greenwald, who offered to make glass

windows of the proposed prefab housing “almost any shade of the rainbow.”

This intervention will be on view through August 26.

Mies van der Rohe’s Revealed: New Views coming At the same time, the Museum will stage Mies van der Rohe’s McCormick House Revealed: New Views, a complementary three-part exhibition curated by renowned Columbia University Professor of Art History and Archeology Barry Bergdoll. New Views will provide background, context, and visibility to the McCormick House and serve as an introduction for a broad audience.

“The McCormick House is the great unknown Mies van der Rohe design hiding in plain view,” said Bergdoll. “Not only is the restoration going to allow visitors again to experience its spatial sequence, but research has revealed Mies van der Rohe’s contribution, hitherto all but unknown, to the vibrant debate over a future of prefabricated houses in post-World War II America.”

Among the highlights will be loans from the Mies van der Rohe archive at the Museum of Modern Art, including three drawings of the McCormick House that have never been exhibited. The exhibition is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

In 1952, the renowned modern architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed a home for Robert Hall McCormick III, a member of one of Chicago’s most prominent families, and his wife, the poet Isabella Gardner. The McCormick House—one of only three single-family homes built by Mies van der Rohe in the United States— is a rare and important example of his mature style of architecture.

Originally located nearby at 299 Prospect Avenue, the structure was acquired by Elmhurst Art Museum and moved to its current location at 150 Cottage Hill Avenue in 1994.

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Feb. 15 Ricardo V. Cruz, 25, of Cicero, was issued a citation for having open alcohol in a vehicle in the 400 block of N. York at around 3:22 a.m.

Police said an officer was advised by a motorist of someone who was sitting in a parked vehicle drinking alcohol. The officer located Cruz, and observed a liquor bottle inside the vehicle, according to police.

Battery

Feb. 18 Police said officers responded to the report of a fight inside of a residence in the 200 block of N. Glenview at around 2:51 a.m. Upon arrival, police said the victim stated that William Friel, 30, of Elmhurst punched him in the head. Friel was charged with battery. The victim, Grant Hehr, 27, of Elmhurst, was being placed into a gurney when police said he spat on a medic, striking her in the chest. Hehr was later charged with aggravated battery.

Feb. 15 Richard A. Lawless, 49, of Addison, was charged with battery in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 6:30 p.m. Police said officers responded for a check on well-being, after loud banging and screaming was reported coming from a hotel room. Officers located Lawless, who was found to have a valid warrant out of Berwyn. Police said Lawless was taken into custody, and kicked an officer while in custody.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement

Feb. 17 Damage to property was reported at Berens Park at around 10:36 p.m. A reporting officer responded to the report of vehicles doing donuts on the grass/snow in Berens Park. A suspect was stopped and was found to have caused damage to park property. He was charged with destruction of property, and released to a parent.

Disorderly conduct

Feb. 20 A complainant told police at around 6:08 p.m. that after pulling into a parking spot at York High School, a suspect came alongside her driver door and began yelling and swearing at her, telling her she did not know how to drive. The suspect states the complainant cut her off twice and was driving erratically. The suspect was informed that her actions were inappropriate. The complainant and her parents did not want to pursue complaints.

Feb. 17 Sean J. Marchese, 25, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct-public intoxication, in the 100 block of S. York at around 2:04 a.m. Police said officers responded for a report of a fight. According to police, a victim related that Marchese had bothered her and her friend throughout the evening. After the victim said she would not leave the bar with him, he allegedly threatened her. Police said the victim was frightened by Marchese’s statement and requested police assistance.

Robert Waters, 37, of Wood Dale, was charged with disorderly conduct-public intoxication in the 600 block of W. North at around 1:16 a.m.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Feb. 17 Police said officers responded to the report of a physical domestic incident in the 100 block of Linden at around 8:21 p.m. Upon

CALL 800-222-TIPS arrival, both stated they were involved in an argument and then began hitting each other.

There were no physical injuries to either subject. Neither wished to sign complaints, and one of the subjects agreed to leave the location for the evening.

Feb. 16

A 34-year-old Bellwood woman was charged with domestic battery in the 700 block of N. Walnut at around 1:38 p.m. Police said a reporting officer responded for a domestic in progress, where the caller observed a physical domestic being perpetrated in a white Chevrolet Impala. A witness stated that the suspect allegedly slapped the victim several times, but the suspect stated they were verbally arguing and she struck the victim in the shoulder several times with the back of her open hand.

Police said officers were notified by a witness about a domestic battery incident near Butterfield and Commonwealth at around 5:49 a.m. The victim stated she argued with her boyfriend, the suspect, and tried to escape the car. The suspect allegedly pulled and scratched the victim attempting to keep her in the car. The suspect then reportedly fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle. An investigation is pending.

Feb. 15 A 25-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery and interfering with a 9-1-1 call in the 500 block of Babcock at around 10:48 a.m. A victim told police she and the suspect were involved in an argument. As the victim attempted to leave the residence the suspect reportedly pushed her and prevented her from leaving the house.

When the victim attempted to call 9-1-1 the suspect allegedly grabbed the phone from her.

The victim locked herself in the bathroom and contacted police.

DUI, illegal consumption or possession of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation of open alcohol, illegal possession of open alcohol

Feb. 18 Miguel Oheda-Cabada, 25, of Long Beach, Calif., was charged with DUI and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 2:06 a.m.

Feb. 17 Dexter Hicks, 24, of Chicago, was charged with illegal transportation of alcohol and felony driving while license suspended near York and Lake at 4:48 p.m.

Eric Saucedo, 27, of Chicago, was charged with DUI near York and the Canadian National Railroad at around 2:30 a.m.

Feb. 21 A victim in the 200 block of Indiana told police that between 1 p.m. and 5:40 p.m., he received 35 phone calls from an unknown caller in Hattiesburg, Miss. The victim and the caller became engaged in a verbal argument and the victim disconnected the call. The reporting officer attempted to contact the caller with no results.

Feb. 18 Police said officers responded to the report of a domestic in the 500 block of W. North at around 11:12 p.m. Upon arrival, a complainant told police that Gilbert Alvarez, 32, of Elmhurst, was in the parking lot allegedly yelling and banging on her vehicle’s window. Police said Alvarez had previously been served with a no-trespass order for the same location. He was charged with trespassing.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Feb. 21 Kimbrielle Chiles, 25, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, disobeying a traffic control sign and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Palmer and Marion at around 3:58 p.m.

Feb. 19 Aria Naja Delo Rias, 22, of Broadview, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 7:17 p.m.

Alexis Martinez-Tapia, 19, of Franklin Park, was charged with possession of cannabis, no valid driver’s license and making an improper turn subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Lake at around 11:57 p.m. Armando Vanegas, 20, also of Franklin Park, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, while a juvenile suspect was charged with possession of cannabis and curfew.

Feb. 16 Eric C. Wallace, 22, of Wheaton, and Mark Shapiro, 23, of Lombard, were issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to an investigation of suspicious vehicles near St. Charles and Oakland Grove at around 9:09 p.m.

Fred G. Wilson, 32, of Hillside, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in the 600 block of W. St. Charles at around 8:35 p.m.

Damian Wysocki, 44, of Darien, was charged with two felony counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, one misdemeanor charge of possession of hypodermic

syringes and one misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia in the 600 block of W. North at around 8:31 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious vehicle investigation, Wysocki was observed smoking a metal pipe. A search of the vehicle yielded multiple syringes, two crack pipes, spoon, two pill capsules which field tested positive for heroin and a ziplock bag containing crack cocaine, according to police.

Feb. 15 Sean M. Rooney, 20, of Plainfield, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia at Elmhurst College, 190 S. Prospect, at around 3:10 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances

Feb. 17 Police said officers responded to the report of 12 juveniles standing on top of a parking deck in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 8:08 p.m. throwing things off the top level.

When officers arrived, the juveniles had dispersed and only five were located and denied throwing anything off the parking deck. A suspect was found to be in possession of an e-cigarette and transported to the police station where he was released to a parent. All other suspects were released at the scene.

Feb. 20-Feb. 21 Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of E. Madison between the above dates. A witness reports she received a Verizon bill for a wireless account which does not belong to her. The victim reports an unknown suspect opened a Verizon account. using her personal information.

Feb. 20 A victim in the 400 block of E. Vallette told police at around 5:43 a.m. that he received a text message from a suspect requesting a video chat. The victim became suspicious and ended the video chat with the suspect. The victim later received a text message from the suspect threatening the victim unless he wired money.

The victim wired $250 to the suspect in the Philippines. Approximately 10 minutes later, the victim received another text message from the suspect demanding an additional $200.

The victim attempted to wire the money; however the transaction was declined. The victim was advised to end contact with the suspect.

Dec. 1, 2017-Feb. 20 A reporting officer responded to Elmhurst College for the report of 10 stolen bicycles.

The complainant stated upon conducting an inventory, 10 bicycles that the college had as a part of a bicycle sharing program had been missing since December of 2017.

Feb. 19 An Elmhurst police reporting commander observed a Gray BMW X5 driving with its lights off in the 300 block of Kenmore at around 3:12 a.m. The vehicle sped past with two subjects described as black males inside.

The employee at the storage lot reviewed the video footage and could see the motorhome leave with a white 4-door car following. The motorhome was entered into LEADS as stolen.

The DuPage County Election Commission has announced that we have partnered with Scytl to implement a new scalable Election Night Reporting (ENR) system on the Commission website.

The new system provides each user the ability to customize their viewing experience to fit the size of any viewing screen and the ability to select “My Favorite Races” to track.

Visitors will also have access to a graphical view of in-depth county results, including a breakdown of votes received by contest, candidate, and Precinct. Downloadable reports, custom filtering, and maps illustrating Precincts reporting, voter turnout,

and results are also available.

The Commission will begin to upload results to the new page at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, election night. Updates will occur every 15 minutes throughout the night until all polling locations have reported.

Additionally, voters will have access to archived election results for each DuPage County election through 2011.

Additional results will be made available following the March Primary Election.

Reader agrees OBT red light camera is ‘money machine’

I would like to second reader Eric Stuhlmann’s letter to the editor this month about the Oakbrook Terrace “money machine” red light camera at 22nd and Rte. 83.

Having had a family vehicle fall victim to the same red light camera on the way to Costco, we reviewed the video, thought we had a case to appeal and sent in our request to appeal. There were around 50 other upset ticket recipients present at the appeal hearing. One recipient pointed out there was a lengthy 2017 Chicago Tribune article that suggested a questionable approval process for the red light cameras by local politicians

after multiple denials by IDOT. Living in Illinois, we were not surprised to hear this.

Our appeal did not go so well, despite what we felt was questionable evidence. At least, the arbiter was polite and we had a good discussion with him.

We figure the way to get back to the Oakbrook Terrace “great rip-off” is to stop shopping in Oakbrook Terrace. There will be no more Home Depot purchases or dining in Oakbrook Terrace. By the way, Costco is located in Oak Brook – we can’t give that up! Now, we screech to a stop on the yellow arrow when turning right onto 22nd St. Hopefully, we won’t get rear-ended.

Suspects continue to enter unlocked vehicles, garages, police say On Feb. 19, a complainant in the 500 block of W. Gladys told police at around 4:46 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked Lexus parked in the driveway and removed his garage door opener. The unknown suspect(s) then opened the garage door and entered their unlocked black LandRover. Nothing appeared to be missing except the garage opener.

Five additional reports of an unknown suspect(s) entering unlocked vehicles were reported in the 500 block of W. Gladys between 5:16 and 11:25 a.m. In one instance, gift cards were removed from a vehicle; in another instance, a garage door opener was taken.

Then, from Feb. 17-Feb. 19, several other instances of an unknown suspect(s) entering unlocked vehicles were reported in the following areas between the above dates: two Saturday, March 10 instances in the 500 and 600 blocks • At 12 noon, the 22nd Annual El- of W. Suspect arrested after allegedly striking girlfriend with vehicle On Feb. 16, a 26-year-old Darien man was charged with aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, robbery, theft and unlawful restraint at Atrium Way at around 1:43 a.m.

Police said officers responded for a hit and run involving a pedestrian. The victim was yelling for help after her ex-boyfriend, the suspect, allegedly hit her with his vehicle and left. The suspect reportedly approached the victim in a parking lot, took the victim’s phone and attempted to drive away.

The victim reached into the vehicle to get her phone at which time, she was allegedly struck by the vehicle. The victim was transported to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment.

The suspect was later apprehended in Darien.

The younger Payton talked about his father teaching him the value of giving back to others and taking care of those less fortunate. Now that he has a 6-year-old himself, Payton said he hopes to instill the same values in his own son. He also boasted his son already has 1000 followers in Twitter!

St. Patrick’s Day Queen returns to alma mater

Pictured Mary Kate Manion, a graduate of Immaculate Conception Grade School and High School, returned to the school for an all-school assembly on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 13 to celebrate her being elected to serve as Queen of the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The Independent will bring its readers a feature story about Manion in a future issue.

Gaughan honored as ICGS Distinguished Graduate On the morning of Friday, Feb. 2, the Immaculate Conception Grade School community came together for a Mass to close their celebration of Catholic Schools Week.

As is an annual ICGS tradition, the National Catholic Education Association’s Distinguished Graduate Award was presented at the conclusion of Mass. This award is presented each year to an Immaculate Conception Grade School graduate who has taken the values of their Catholic education and has made a positive impact on American life and/or the Catholic Church.

This year, Matthew Gaughan, a young alumnus from the ICGS Class of 2007, was chosen after being nominated by one of his classmates.

Matt attended ICGS for nine years and then studied at IC Catholic Prep for another four years.

To begin the presentation, ICGS Principal Cathy Linley spoke of Matt’s years at the grade school.

Matt, who has been challenged with cerebral palsy since his birth at 29 weeks old, received physical therapy at Easter Seals Du Page & Fox Valley throughout all his school years.

During his years at ICGS, his retired sixth grade teacher Sharon Mc Elmeel remembered that Matt wanted no special treatment. He wanted to be treated just like his classmates and, with the nickname, “The Crusher,” he even played football for the ICGS Knights.

When he was a sixth grader at ICGS, he was asked to serve as a national spokesperson for Easter Seals.

With that responsibility he traveled the country, representing Easter Seals and telling his story of success.

When Matt graduated from grade school, he went on to IC Catholic Prep where he was a four-year member of the golf team and served as co-Captain during his senior year.

Subsequently, Matt went on to study Political Science & Public Policy at Miami University of Ohio and is currently working as a Financial Representative for Northwestern Mutual in Northbrook.

Upon receiving the award and a standing ovation, Matt spoke to the students, faculty, and guests in attendance.

“I had to work to gain my independence, and throughout the process of doing so, it only made sense to give back and help other people gain theirs,” he said.

Matt then spoke of graduating from college. He and his classmates were told to choose a quote to put on their graduation cap.

“My quote was ’To think in such a place, I have led such a life,’” Matt said. “For me that quote is interchangeable with IC.”

ICGS young alumni visit alma mater during Catholic Schools Week On the afternoon of Thursday, Feb. 1, older students at Immaculate Conception Grade School attended an assembly to hear from three young ICGS alumni.

Gathered in the parish’s Monsignor Plunkett Hall, those in grades 5-8 listened to presentations by Christie Hillsman and Gavin Wegner, classmates from the Class of 2007, and Lisa Danno, Class of 2001.

Hillsman, who attended the University of Notre Dame, currently works in Communications at the National Futures Association in Chicago. Among other things, she spoke to students about practicing self-discipline and time management habits in preparation for the high school years, a time when young people

should explore their varied interests in extracurricular activities.

Next, Gavin Wegner, who attended the University of Southern California, talked about his work at Jel Sert®, a food and beverage company in West Chicago. He emphasized to students how important it is in high school and college to make longterm goals and make sure that short term decisions don’t prevent their attainment of those long term goals.

He also shared his own experience of how adversity can provide unexpected opportunity.

Economic Indicators Report shows DuPage as premier business location

County economy ‘stronger than ever,’ according to Choose DuPage

Choose DuPage has released its findings from their 2017 Annual Economic Indicators Report confirming DuPage County’s economy is stronger than ever. Data suggests DuPage County offers a business-friendly environment for a variety of industry sectors including healthcare and manufacturing. While the state and surrounding communities continue to navigate struggles with high taxes, pension challenges and a hostile business climate, the findings in Choose DuPage’s report reinforce DuPage County’s attractiveness for business development as well as quality of life “In addition to Amita Health relocating its headquarters – 1,100 jobs – to Lisle, DuPage County had a number of other big projects develop in 2017,” said John Carpenter, president and CEO of Choose DuPage. “Low taxes, strong labor demographics, as well as a highly educated and skilled workforce are just a few of the benefits DuPage is successfully leveraging to attract business development for the region. DuPage County continues to be a driving economic force in the Chicagoland area as there are a number of opportunities on the horizon and we anticipate further growth for the region in 2018.”

DuPage County saw a number of large real estate transactions over the past year spurring job creation including AMITA Health’s relocation of its headquarters to Lisle in the fall of 2017. CAMCRAFT and Get Fresh Produce brought just under 500 new jobs to the Bartlett area, while Oak Brook gained more than 325 jobs via

transactions by CBRE, Rush University Medical Center and others.

2017 Annual Economic Indicators Report Highlights Closing out the year, DuPage County had the lowest unemployment rate in the Chicagoland sixcounty region at 3.8%, lower than both the State of Illinois (4.7%) and United States (3.9%).

DuPage County’s top job opportunities were reported to be in the computer and mathematical fields, office and administrative support, management, healthcare, sales, business and financial operations.

Office vacancy rates dropped from 17.2% at the end of 2016 to 15.8% at the end of 2017; Industrial vacancy rates dropped from 5.3% this time last year, to 5.1%. DuPage County continues to have one of the lowest industrial vacancy rates in the region.

County announces 2018 road construction projects The DuPage County Division of Transportation (DuDOT) recently announced upcoming road construction projects for 2018.

The construction program focuses on improving the County’s infrastructure. Improvements include pavement patching, resurfacing and traffic signal maintenance.

The County will patch and resurface 42 lane miles of County highways, improving the driving surface and

extending the service life of the pavement. Roads to be resurfaced include County Farm Road from Jewell Road to Illinois Route 64 and from Army Trail Road to Schick Road; Schick Road from County Farm Road to Gary Avenue; 75th Street from Illinois Route 59 to Olympus Drive; and 63rd Street from Cass Avenue to Madison Street.

The County will leverage federal funding to perform capital projects that

include congestion relief and operational improvements. Capital projects include widening 55th Street between Main Street and Fairview Avenue, providing left turn lanes, modernizing and interconnecting the traffic signals; resurfacing 55th Street from Dunham Road to Williams Street; patching and resurfacing Greenbrook Boulevard from County Farm Road to Lake Street; and expanding the County’s Central Signal System.

The County’s Central Signal System, which allows DuDOT to remotely monitor and observe traffic operations and make adjustments to conditions, will be expanded to include an additional 97 signals and connect to the City of Naperville’s system.

His office handled a high volume of cases involving terrorism, narcotics and arms trafficking, financial and healthcare fraud, cybercrime, public corruption, gang violence, organized crime, and civil rights violations.

The IC Catholic Prep wrestling team made plenty of history this season.

In addition to senior Joey Bianchini winning a Class 1A state title, the Knights also qualified for the Class 1A dual-team state finals for the first time in the brief tenure of the program.

IC Catholic Prep started its road to Bloomington and the dual-team state finals by winning its first-ever regional team title. The Knights had 177 points and finished seven points ahead of second-place Westmont.

The regional title win qualified IC Catholic Prep for the dual-team sectional. The Knights hosted a Class 1A dual-team sectional and recorded a 57-21 victory against Illiana Christian. The win in the semifinals advanced the Knights to the Class 1A dual-team state finals meet held at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.

In the state quarterfinals, the Knights lost 60-15 to Vandalia and were eliminated from the tournament.

Vandalia ended up taking second in the state, losing 48-18 to Aurora Christian in the state-championship dual.

In the loss to Vandalia, the Knights forfeited the first match on the card, the 132-pound division.

Bianchini received a forfeit win at 138 pounds. Kyle Franklin was a 3-0 winner over Vandalia’s Robby Durbin at 170 pounds. Victor Vargas was a winner by pinfall in 1:40 against Vandalia’s David Meyer. Jalen Williams lost a close 6-5 match at 160 pounds.

In the dual-team sectional win against Illiana, Finn Barney was a forfeit winner at 106 pounds. John Golding earned a forfeit win at 113, while Joey Maci-Gerace was a forfeit winner at 120 pounds. The first five weight classes were forfeited in the meet.

Bianchini won his match at 138 pounds by pinfall in only 58 seconds.

Heading into Bloomington, Bianchini sported a 41-3 record with a

team-high 101 takedowns to go with 24 pinfall wins against zero pinfall losses.

David Vargas was 26-7 with 43 takedowns and 20 pinfall wins. Franklin was 24-12 with 55 takedowns and seven pinfall wins. O’Brien was 1612 with 35 takedowns and 12 wins via

pinfall. Johnson was 16-13 with 21 takedowns and 11 wins via fall. Scott was 13-13 with 27 takedowns and five wins via fall. Morris was 11-11 with 24 takedowns and eight wins via pin.

IC Catholic Prep is coached by Kevin Sliva and he is assisted by Cory Stanley and Matt Mulvihill.

The free throw was the IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team’s best friend.

The Knights made 31 of 41 free throws, including a 22-for-30 effort in the fourth quarter alone, on their way to a 54-45 win over crosstown neighbor Timothy Christian in the championship game of the Class 2A Guerin Prep regional.

The win was IC Catholic Prep’s third regional crown under coach TJ Tyrrell. This was the Knights seventh regional-championship game appearance in a row, the past six coming under Tyrrell’s direction.

“It was a huge win,” said Tyrrell.

“It felt good to avenge the loss to them earlier in the season and to walk away with the hardware.”

IC Catholic Prep lost at Timothy Christian earlier in the season. “The last time we played them it was at their home gym and we had a very slow start,” said Tyrrell. “In that game, Timothy started very quick and shot the ball very well. We were down 20-6 after the first quarter. We battled back and won the next three quarters combined, but lost 50-42. Losing that game actually was a good thing to help us to really look at areas we needed to improve on and prepare for against Timothy.”

Tyrrell said an adjusted game plan worked well in the regional title game.

“I thought we came in with a very good game plan,” he said. “We wanted to slow the pace down and really throw them off with our zone defense.

We scored a quick basket early and then they scored the next six points.

We called a timeout and didn’t want a repeat of last time. That settled our guys down and they scored only four more points in the half. It was a very low-scoring game in the first half.”

IC Catholic Prep led 10-8 after the first quarter and 16-10 at halftime.

“We held them to two points in the second quarter,” the coach pointed out. “We felt we were in a very good spot at halftime being up and having that lead. That was a good place mentally for us.”

Quite a year for Timothy Christian girls basketball team Trojans break 20-win mark and advance to sectional championship game

The Timothy Christian girls’ basketball team turned up the jets and then some once the calendar turned to 2018.

From January forward coming back from the school’s Renew term break, the Trojans lost only two games and finished the season with a 20-10 record.

“I love the sound of that,” said Timothy Christian coach Michele Strube.

The Trojans won a Class 2A regional title and advanced all the way to a Class 2A sectional title game where they lost to Chicago Harlan.

Timothy also finished 8-4 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play. Timothy’s 20 wins are the most since Strube’s second season at the helm where the team went 15-13 after going 5-22 the previous year. Last year, the Trojans finished 13-15 for a second year in a row.

“I’m beyond thrilled,” said Strube, who coaches the team with her

husband, Jon Strube. “It was a great end to our season. We played fantastic against bigger teams. The girls proved to themselves that they have potential and talent. All they had to do was believe in themselves. They just had to go out there and lay it all on the court. They brought it on the court every night. And if they did that I told them they would be hard to stop.”

Timothy loses only seniors Olivia Schuringa and Emily DeBoer from this year’s team.

“It’s going to be hard losing Olivia and Emily,” said Strube. “Olivia has been consistent and strong for us all year and Emily DeBoer really came on the last three weeks. That was fun to see from her. We will have a different dynamic next year. It’s going to be hard losing those two, but we are going to be able to fill in what we are losing with some sophomores.”

Timothy Christian had a number of swimmers compete in the recent Downers Grove North sectional meet.

Freshman Kyle Mahler tied for 14th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.12. Sophomore Calvin Groenewold was 15th in the 100 with a time of 51.92. Freshman Luke Voss took 23rd with a time of 57.86.

Voss was 21st in the backstroke with a time of 1:10.43. Groenewold took seventh in the breaststroke with a time of 1:01.69. Mahler tied for 12th in the event with a time of 1:03.53.

Two other freshmen, Sarah Carstensen and Greta Hookstra, also were brought up to the varsity at the tail end of the season and will provide further reinforcements next season, Strube noted.

The stellar results this season did not surprise Strube. “Jon and I always hoped with this group,” she said. “We have really great potential. It took a lot of work and constant coaching and instruction. But the girls work so hard and listen so well. They trust us and believe in us and they kept working and working. I love the hard work and all the time they put in over the last four months. There were times when we were going six days a week.

I couldn’t be prouder of this group.

All their hard work showed on the court. It stinks when you lose by one or two points. There are some games from the beginning of the season that we would like to play again because

we played so well the last month of the season.

“We always knew there was potential here. It’s fun to see it finally show on the court. These are amazing young women who come from fabulous families. It’s nice that it all came out on the court. They showed their talent.”

Strube was impressed with how the team played in the regional title game against Lisle.

“I always love defense and it’s fun to see the different defenses we played and see them pay off,” she said. “We held Lisle’s big scorer to seven points. She had 30 points against Westmont. She didn’t make one basket against us, it was all free throws. We lost to Lisle in overtime last year and to do what we did on the court against them was a great moment for the girls.”

Strube noted Heidi Westra and Abby Carstensen provided the defensive help in the Lisle game. “That girl was 5-4 and Heidi is 6-2 and Abby is 5-4 so we put height and speed on her

and it worked,” she explained.

Strube tipped her hat to Chicago Harlan, which won the sectional title and went on to place second in the state in Class 2A. “Harlan was fabulous,” she said.

“I’m not ashamed of how we played against them. We played the best we probably could. We were nervous and turned the ball over 26 times. You cannot do that in the sectional championship game. They had four players in double figures. They were a good team. Their coach knew what to do to us. They saw us play in the previous game and Olivia had 21 points and Emily had 16 points. Against Harlan it was three and five points. He shut them down.”

Strube is already looking forward to what is ahead. “We can come back and do good things,” she said. “We saw that against Harlan. What happened this season is a great sign for our future.”

York’s Kosanovich takes 15th in butterfly at boys state swimming

York swimmer Branko Kosanovich ended his season on the biggest stage possible.

Kosanovich competed in the recent IHSA boys swimming state finals held at Evanston Township High School.

Kosanovich, a sophomore, finished 15th in the state in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.97. He came into the meet seeded 10th with a time of 50.53.

Kosanovich was a state qualifier in the butterfly as a freshman where he took 33rd, thus engineering an 18-place improvement in a year’s time.

He also took 38th in the state in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.35. He came into the meet with a seed time of 53.15.

Earlier, York competed in the Downers Grove North sectional where the Dukes placed third as a team behind conference

cohorts Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central.

York was fifth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:39.28 with Kosanovich, Jay Jensen, Isaac Marlott and Simon DeGrace. Only DeGrace is a senior.

Ben Harrington placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 1:49.57. He’s a freshman.

Jacob Dunlop, another freshman, was 13th with a time of 1:57.66.

Jensen, a sophomore, was eighth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.50. Marlott was 10th in 2:04.23.

DeGrace was eight in the 50 with a time of 22:59, while Gary Derwin was ninth in 23:04. Simon David was 11th in the diving competition with 344.85 points. Salvador Santoya was 14th with 198.70 points.

Kosanovich placed third in the butterfly with a time of 50.53, coming under the state-qualifying time of 52.33. Marlott was

sixth with a time of 54.25.

DeGrace was eighth in the 100 with a time of 49.45, while Nick Ward was 11th at 50.70. Jensen took fourth in the 500 with a time of 4:51.28. Brennan Sanders was 14th with a time of 5:27.27.

York was sixth in the 200 relay with a time of 1:31.46. That team featured Derwin, Ward, Marlott and Harrington.

Kosanovich was one of six swimmers to qualify for state in the backstroke. He finished with a time of 53.15, which was under the 53.32 state cutoff. Freshman Anthony Bauer was 15th with a time of 1:01.67.

Harrington finished 11th in the breaststroke with a time of 1:03.41. Derwin was 16th with a time of 1:06.56.

York also was third in the 400 relay with a time of 3:15.52 with Kosanovich, Jensen, Harrington and DeGrace.

Tyrrell felt a key turning point in the game in the fourth quarter was a possession where the Knights ended up scoring five points via a combination of a shooting foul and a technical foul. Kevin Cheng made 3 of 4 free throws during the sequence and IC Catholic Prep scored a basket on the ensuing possession after the throws.

“That extended the lead to 10 points at that point,” said Tyrrell.

“We had the momentum in our favor and felt pretty good and then all of a sudden Timothy started battling back. In the fourth quarter they were shooting a lot of threes to try and cut the lead down. They had it to within five or six points with three minutes to go after we were up by 12.”

That’s when the free throws started piling up for the Knights. “They fouled us quite a bit to slow the game

down and try and cut down the lead and we kept answering back,” said Tyrrell. “Somebody said that from the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter until the end of the game took about 45 minutes to complete.

It probably was the longest four minutes of a game in my life. We were trying to hold the lead and then they battled back and picked up the pressure. Our guys remained resilient.”

Nico Gaudio made 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter. “They chose to foul Nico when he caught the ball,” said Tyrrell. “We were very confident in him because he had been shooting free throws well.”

Gaudio finished with 10 points, all coming in the fourth quarter. Cheng finished with four points from the field and made 10 of 15 free throws, including 5 of 8 in the fourth quarter.

He ended with 14 points.

Tyrrell also lauded the play of senior Kris Askew who had 12 points.

“Kris probably played the most important game of his career,” he said.

“He started big for us. Timothy went with an isolation defense on Kevin and Alex Meurer to try and keep them out of our offense. Kris knocked down two big 3s to get us going early. He did a really good job defensively as well. I was very proud of Kris.”

Meurer finished with nine points.

He had two field goals and was 3-for4 from the foul line, including 2-for2 in the fourth quarter. “They did a pretty good job limiting Kevin and Alex,” said Tyrrell.

Timothy played without Khali Saunders, who was out with a hand injury sustained in an earlier game against Wheaton Academy. But Tyrrell noted the Knights still were strong in the post with sophomore Ryan Wojtalewicz, Nico Gaudio and Dom Gaudio.

“This was a really good opportunity for Ryan and he stepped up for us,” said Tyrrell. “He played pretty much the whole game. Nico, Ryan and Dom played post for us against

a very talented Brandon Orange, who was averaging a double-double.

I thought all those guys did a good job. Ryan was put on the line several times and finished 6-for-9 from the free-throw line and they all came in the third and fourth quarter when we really needed it. Dom Gaudio didn’t take any shots until he hit the biggest shot of his young career so far when he knocked down a 3 in the fourth quarter when we really needed one.”

Tyrrell noted Timothy stepped things up from the 3-point line late in the game. “In the fourth quarter they hit five 3-point baskets to keep the game close,” he said. “They didn’t hit any 3s in the first half and made two in the third. Just when we thought the lead was comfortable, they would come down and hit a quick 3. And then with them fouling, that slowed the game down. Our guys did a good job of figuring it out and grinding it out and keeping the belief that they could win. Overall, a lot of guys contributed for us. It was a battle.

We knew coming in that they were a very talented team. They finished with 22 wins. We knew we knocked them out of regionals last year in the last few seconds and that they would be motivated and fired up. It was a great game. It was a really cool environment. It was a well-coached game on both sides. It’s nice to be part of another regional championship.”

Tyrell also applauded his team’s bench. “Our bench was outstanding again,” he said. “They had great energy throughout the game and kept things positive and helped us keep focused on what we needed to do. It’s neat to see this great group of seniors succeed. I’m really excited for them getting this regional championship.”

IC Catholic Prep played Chicago Clark on Tuesday in one semifinal of the Class 2A Timothy Christian sectional in Elmhurst. If the Knights won that game they will play either Chicago Uplift or Chicago Orr for the Timothy Christian sectional title Friday at 7 p.m.

Chiefs Yellow hockey team wins Chi-Town Championship Squirt team headed to playoffs on a hot streak

The Chiefs hockey club Squirt Yellow team won the Chi-Town Cup Championship held at Johnny’s Ice House over President’s Day Weekend. The team bested a talented field of hockey clubs from St. Louis, Indianapolis, Wisconsin and Michigan to capture the title.

“I’m proud of our players,” said head coach Jeff Redick. ”The kids played their hearts out and their effort was rewarded.”

In the finale against The Rams from Rockford, Michigan, the Chiefs jumped out to an early lead in the first period when Frank DeBartolo scored on an assist by Lucas Potyrala. Just as time was about to expire on the opening frame, Anthony Pellegrino took a pass from DeBartolo and buried a backhander in the net to double the lead at 2-0.

The second period proved to be a scoreless affair as the Chiefs fought off several Rams attacks. The defensive effort was led by Henry Cabage, Adam Crum, Mitch Fafinski and Eli Lucier.

With time for a comeback running out, the Michigan team played the final period with a real sense of urgency. About midway through the period the Rams were able to get on the scoreboard to cut the lead to 2-1. The Chiefs responded quickly when Fafinski scored on an assist from Ian McPhee to recapture the two goal lead.

The Chiefs relied on strong team play to hold off the Rams for the final six and a half minutes of play to preserve the 3-1 victory. Forwards Carson Cruver, Lucy Farley, Nick Pellegrino, Josh Redick and Jack Rychley were instrumental in the effort as the Chiefs seized control of the puck and played much of the final frame in the team’s offensive zone to limit opportunities for their opponent.

Goalie Jack Brown made 26 saves to earn the victory and was named tournament MVP. Chiefs Squirt Yellow compiled a regular season record of 10-6-1 after competing in the Northwest Hockey League’s top tier and prepares to enter league play-offs next week.

While the Timothy Christian boys basketball season ended earlier than it would have liked, the Trojans still achieved success on many levels.

The Trojans finished the season 22-6 overall and won the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division title with an 11-1 mark. Timothy went 8-4 in conference play last year.

Timothy lost to crosstown neighbor IC Catholic Prep 54-45 in the title game of the Class 2A Guerin Prep regional.

“I give IC a lot of credit as far as their approach to the game,” said firstyear Timothy coach Scott Plaisier.

“They used their offense as part of their best defense by controlling the ball and running long offensive possessions. They made us play defense for extended periods of time and it was 16-10 at halftime because of it That makes every possession have an impact. We left some points out there in the first half on layups and free throws that could have given us the lead.”

Plaisier was pleased with how his team reacted in the second half. “We played a good third quarter and that got us to a two-point game,” he said.

“The start of the fourth quarter did not go as planned. IC went on a 12-0 run and we found ourselves chasing pretty hard. Because of that we had to make a decision because they were controlling the ball and time of possession. We wanted to make the fourth quarter last as long as possible. To their credit, they knocked down a ton of free throws. If they give us a break by missing some of those free throws, maybe we make the comeback all the way.

“Our thought process was that if we could get it to a four- or five-point game we would play it straight up and not foul. We never got that opportunity. We were down six with a chance to

get down to four and we couldn’t do it.

The kids fought hard and kept coming at them. Well-shot free throws ended the game and our season.”

Plaisier knew his team would be in for a battle. Timothy defeated IC Catholic Prep at home in the regular-season meeting. “IC is a well-coached team,” he said. “They did a very good job.

They had a good game plan. We had been struggling against zone defenses the majority of the season. They give us troubles. Against St. Edward, they played us zone and I figured IC would do something similar. They played zone and it was hard for us to execute some of the things we’ve worked on.

We didn’t shoot well in the first half and had some missed opportunities.

That could have made the game go a little differently. We tried to scramble it up the best we could in the fourth.

There is no shame in losing to a team like that. We’re just disappointed we couldn’t win a regional when we had a successful season.

“It almost feels like we overachieved and underachieved in the same season. We overachieved with the number of wins we had and we got to a point where we felt pretty good in getting to that next goal of winning the regional title. And then when we don’t do it, that’s tough.”

Overall, Plaisier placed high praise on his 2017-2018 group, particularly the senior class. “We had a great group of senior guys,” he said. “We had six seniors who were tremendous all year.

They are really special kids who accepted me as their first-year head coach. That’s not an easy thing to do when you are 17 and 18 years old and it’s your senior year and you have to accept my teachings and philosophies.

A ton of credit goes to our kids. They accepted me with open arms. They are a joy to coach. My heart aches for them. They wanted to win that regional title really bad.”

Plaisier returns five juniors and a sophomore from this year’s team.

“We are going to have to rely on some younger guys next season,” he said.

“And we’ll have some guys from the sophomore team who will be playing.

It’s going to be a much different group next year. We had so much production out of the seniors this season. We’ll be leaning on some younger guys who will have to step forward. Matt Owens, who was a sophomore this year, is back and Justin Baez started every game this year as a junior and will give us good minutes. We’re going to need guys off this sophomore team to play significant roles for us.”

In the loss to IC Catholic Prep, Brandon Orange led the Trojans with 18 points. Owens added 17 points, while Baez had six points. The Trojans shot 38 percent from the field and 33 percent from the 3-point line with Owens connecting on three 3s, while Baez and Orange each made two.

Orange had eight rebounds, while Ty Merrick had three assists.

Earlier, the Trojans were 61-41 winners over Guerin Prep in the regional semifinals. Timothy led 15-11 after the first quarter and 30-24 at halftime. A 17-7 run in the third quarter provided more distance for the Trojans.

Orange led the Trojans with 14 points, while Baez had 13 points. Merrick, Mike Martens and Nick Huisman each had six points. Timothy shot 52 percent from the field. Baez hit three 3-pointers, while Martens had two.

Orange had six rebounds, while Danardo Jones grabbed five. Michael Thomas finished with eight assists and had a team-high three steals.

Timothy players Chris Brooks and Andrew Petrulakis advanced to the sectional portion of the Class 2A state 3-point shooting contest. They will shoot on their home floor this week for a chance to advance to the 3-point state finals in Peoria.

The York boys basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a flurry of recent activity.

The Dukes lost to Proviso West 6352 in a conference game that needed two overtimes to reach a decision.

York trailed 9-6 after the first quarter and led 20-19 at halftime. Proviso outscored York 5-2 in a point-starved third quarter, but the Dukes outscored the hosts 11-9 in the fourth to force extra sessions. After playing to a 9-9 stalemate in the first overtime, Proviso outscored York 21-10 in the second overtime.

Nick Kosich led the Dukes with 19 points. Angelo Martucci had nine points, while Nate Shockey had eight

points. Erik Cohn and Sam Walsh each had six points. York shot only 29.3 percent from the field. Kosich had three 3-pointers. Walsh had seven rebounds, while Cohn had five. Martucci had three assists, while Kosich had four of the team’s seven steals.

York also dropped a 62-51 WSC Silver game to Oak Park-River Forest. York led 14-12 after one, but trailed 32-28 at halftime. Oak Park-River Forest outscored York 15-9 in the third quarter and 15-14 in the fourth.

Martucci led York with 10 points, while John Milling and Jeff Grace each tallied nine points. Cohn had seven points. Walsh pulled in five rebounds, while Shockey had three assists. Martucci and Shockey each

had three steals. York shot 48.7 percent from the field.

In a 49-37 WSC Silver win against Lyons Township, York led 16-9 after the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime. York used a 12-8 third quarter and a 14-9 fourth-quarter advantage to record the win.

Cohn led the Dukes with 16 points, while Martucci had 13 points.

Milling ended with eight points and Walsh had six points and Shockey had five points. Martucci had four rebounds, while Milling and Martucci each had three assists. York shot 46.9 percent from the field and made 12 of 16 free-throw attempts (75 percent). The Dukes also hit 7 of 17 three-pointers (41.1) with Cohn going 3-for-4 from behind the line and

Milling hitting a pair of threes.

York wrapped up the regular season with a 68-62 loss to Willowbrook in the West Suburban Conference crossover series game. The loss put York at 17-11 overall and the Dukes finished 7-5 in conference play.

York opened play earlier this week in the Class 4A Chicago Curie regional against Riverside-Brookfield.

The Dukes are the No. 8 sectional seed in the R-B sectional, while the sectional hosts are the No. 9 seed.

If York won that game, it will face No. 1 seed Chicago Curie, No. 16 Chicago Schurz or No. 17 Leyden in the regional title game Friday at 7 p.m. at Chicago Curie with the winner heading to R-B next week for sectional play.

Travel as a political act

TV host, author Rick Steves to discuss transformational power of travel

On Friday, March 2 at 4:30 p.m., travel expert Rick Steves, best known as the host of the acclaimed PBS television series Rick Steves’ Europe and the author of several bestselling guidebooks, will present Travel as a Political Act, part of the Roland Quest Lecture Series at Elmhurst College. It will be held in Hmmerschmidt Memorial Chapl on the campus of Elmhurst College. It will be preceded at 3:30 p.m. by a book signing. Steves will sign copies of the latest edition of his book Travel as a Political Act, which also will be available for Rick Steves purchase.

NOTE: This event has been rescheduled from Feb. 9, when the event was canceled as a result of the winter storm.

Steves believes there is more to travel than good-value hotels, great art and fine cuisine. Americans who “travel as a political act” can enjoy themselves and come home with a better understanding of the interconnectedness of today’s world.

In a slideshow lecture drawing on lessons learned while exploring Europe, Central America, Asia and the Middle East, Steves will talk about the transformational power of travel, and how to travel thoughtfully and gain a broader perspective.
