CAC attorney claims there could be a lawsuit against City

At a meeting of the Zoning and Planning Commission (ZPC) this month, Fremont residents still objected to a revised plan to add space proposed by Elmhurst Extended Care (EEC), a nursing home facility.

A previous plan proposal was pulled from a City Council agenda before a vote could be taken in October.

A possible lawsuit against the City has been mentioned.

Again, as in previous meetings, residents on Fremont claimed the EEC made a “deceptive” presentation.

Neighbors also said that the expansion was too large and it did not belong in a residential neighborhood.

They said Fremont should not be considered a transitional neighborhood.

EEC was originally opened in the 1960s and expanded in 1975, according to Scott Day, an attorney for the company. Many rooms in the nursing home have three and four residents.

He said plans were to have more rooms with one occupant “since the right to privacy is critical for the residents.”

“This is not an expansion,” he said.

EEC originally approached the City in September 2016.

Adv. Center says could be lawsuit Ben Silver, an attorney for the Citizen Advocacy Center (CAC) with an office in Elmhurst, stated that the situation involved “very unique circumstances.”

“I have never seen anything like it,” he said.

Silver said that “various people” mentioned the possibility of a lawsuit against City agencies, which have denied previous requests by EEC.

Resident Ben Zapata pointed out that the whole Fremont community had an issue with EEC, not just the McNichols, who have a single-family house right next to the EEC building. He said the proposal should be rejected “because of its sheer size.”

“Let’s not beat around the bush,” Zapata said. “The ECC’s presentation was very deceptive.”

Zapata claimed there were “plenty of opportunities at other locations.”

John McNichols said that this pro-

posal has always been about meeting standards in the zoning code like does the proposal affect the ability of neighbors to enjoy their property?

And, will it affect property values?

“We are not discriminating against disabled people,” Mary Young said.

“We can’t say ‘never’ to anything,” Day responded, adding that the facility currently has 108 beds.

The ZPC has not set a date for making a decision, but Rose said it could be in December or January.

Police closed down this portion of Butterfield Road in Elmhurst on the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 8 while an accident investigation was held after a road construction worker was struck by a vehicle and had to be transported to Elmhurst Hospital. Butterfield Road (Illinois Route 56} was being repaved at the time of the accident.

Gibbons puts final touches on 34th Turkey Trot Annual event to fight hunger steps off Thanksgiving morning

The Independent was recently able to catch up to a man who has been very busy these days. At the time of this interview, Dan Gibbons was just ten days away from Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 23, when the 34th Annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot will step off from Park & Cottage Hill Avenues, beginning at 9 a.m. There were already 7500 people signed up and the number was still growing.

Gibbons stressed that registration would continue right up to and including the day of the event, whereas most Thanksgiving Day races close registration several days beforehand.

His focus this year is to make registration as smooth as possible.

“You can still register on the day of the race, except it is $40, rather than $35 for early registration,” he said.

Focused on a smooth registration…

Urging people to pre-register at DanGibbonsTurkeyTrot.org, Gib-

bons said then all they need to do is pick up their packets, which can be done on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 2-6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 537 So. York. Packets can also be picked up on race day at the Elmhurst College Gymnasium inside R. A. Faganel Hall at 221 Walter St., beginning at 6:15 a.m.

Because so many streets around the college are blocked off to accommodate the racers, Gibbons urges people not to bring their cars near the area or they could get blocked in for the duration of the event.

“So many people want to just drive up ‘real quick’ and run inside to get their packets, then they end up angry when they get penned in,” he said.

“If you really want to drive up to get your packet, do it early in the morning. Come out at 6:15 a.m., park in the lot, walk over to Faganel Hall to get it and then go back home for an hour or so until the race.

“We do our best to accommodate people but this is still a problem.”

To accommodate all participants – whether a runner, a walker or just a spectator – there is trolley service beginning at 7 a.m. with pick-ups at the U. S. Bank at York & Vallette and at York High School. Either place offers ample parking to leave cars behind and grab transit right to the start of the race.

Gibbons reminds everyone that “while we are all animal lovers,” it’s best to leave pets at home for the safety and welfare of all participants, including spectators.

What it’s all about When all is said and done and the arrangements are in place, Gibbons never forgets what the day is all about – the fight against hunger.

He talked about one of his long-time volunteers, who had recently sent him a letter.

“In her letter, she talked about her mother who had been through many difficulties throughout her life. Having been born behind the Iron Curtain, her mother came to America as an orphan, where she faced the usual struggles with language, schooling and living in an orphanage.

“Years later, after her mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness, [the volunteer] asked her mother,

‘what was the toughest thing you ever went through in your life? Was it fleeing Europe, coming to America, going through a divorce, fighting her illness?’

Her mother’s reply? “Being hungry.”

“Imagine that! Of all the hardships this woman had faced, the toughest thing she ever faced was hunger,” Gibbons said. “I want to keep the source of that letter anonymous because it is very personal, but it speaks to the inspiration for Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot every year. The reality is, 60,000 people are at risk of going to bed hungry every night in DuPage County and 20,000 of them are children.”

Education thought-leader addresses District 205 leaders On Thursday, Nov. 9, Elmhurst District 205 hosted arguably the most prominent world-wide educational thought-leader, Dr. Michael Fullan.

Dr. Fullan was awarded the Order of Canada in 2012 for his work in transforming education in the Province of Ontario. His organization currently works with countries, states, jurisdictions, and districts in Ontario, California, England, Finland, New Zealand, Australia and Uruguay.

Seventy-five District 205 administrators and teacher leaders were in attendance along with 50 other educators from six other Districts.

A prolific author, Dr. Fullan’s website features 34 of his books, but this number does not include many of his collaborative efforts, white papers, and other scholarly publications.

Over the past three years, the administrative team has studied his books Coherence: The Right Drivers in Action for Schools, Districts, and Systems (Fullan and Quinn), Professional Capital: Transforming Teaching in Every School (Fullan and Hargreaves), The Principal: Three Keys to Maximizing Impact and Cultures Built to Last: Systematic PLCs at Work (DuFour and Fullan).

The presentation focused on the el-

ements of his recent work Coherence (Focusing Direction, Creating Collaborative Cultures, Deepening Learning, and Securing Accountability) with an emphasis on deepening learning and the implications of technology through the lens of healthy cultures. His practical approach creates and drives theory after consulting with successful practitioners in the field.

District 205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer offered comments after the presentation.

“Today was a great day for the future of Education in Elmhurst,” he said. “Although Dr. Fullan has been awarded the Order of Canada, we’d like to think he is more proud of the recognition he received today when we memorialized him as an Honorary Duke.

“Michael is truly brilliant, but he can make the most complex concepts intuitive and accessible. Our administrators and teacher leaders were engaged in serious reflective thought about our role in society and moral obligation to ensure that all students learn and grow. Hospital holds ‘active threat’ exercise to prepare for worst-case scenario

Elmhurst Hospital, in partnership with the Elmhurst Police and Fire Departments, held an Active Threat FullScale Exercise on Wednesday, Nov. 8. The exercise featured an Elmhurst police officer, who played the role of an upset husband whose wife had died at the hospital.

As part of the drill, the man, who was armed with a fake gun and demanding to see someone in charge, took two hostages and held them in an office in the adminis-

tration area of the hospital.

Elmhurst police officers later entered the room to rescue the hostages and take into custody the active shooter.

Elmhurst Fire Department paramedics treated the man, who had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The hospital holds several drills each year to prepare and test its responses in the event of a disaster in Elmhurst or surrounding communities.

Mayor requests seat on ONCC Ad Hoc Committee On Monday, Nov. 6, the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) Ad Hoc Fly Quiet Committee met to review the draft report on Fly Quiet Runway Rotation Test #3 along with potential scenarios for the 2.5 year Interim Fly Quiet Plan. Survey results showed that Elmhurst residents strongly opposed Fly Quiet Test #3.

The Ad Hoc Fly Quiet Committee was formed after the ONCC approved the City of Elmhurst membership. Due to this timing, Elmhurst was not afforded the opportunity to be appointed to the Ad Hoc Committee. Mayor Steve Morley has formally requested that Elmhurst have a seat at the table for the discussions and decisions on the Interim Fly Quiet Plan.

If ONCC decides not to appoint an Elmhurst representative to the Ad Hoc Committee, Morley has requested that the vote on RRP be halted until the Ad Hoc By-Laws Committee can make Fly Quiet a standing committee. This would allow fair representation for communities on the diagonal runways to have a vote in the recommendation to the full ONCC Board.

The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) conducted several Runway Rotation Plan (RRP) tests to analyze the shared impact of aircraft noise in neighborhoods surrounding O’Hare Airport. These tests encourage pilots and traffic controllers to use designated nighttime runways. Based on these results tests, a proposed Interim Fly Quiet plan will be voted on by the ONCC Ad Hoc Committee, which is presented to ONCC for final approval.

Test #3 directly impacted specific areas in Elmhurst, with a 100% increase in nighttime airplane traffic compared to Test #1 and Test #2. Every other week during the evening hours of 11 p.m. – 5 a.m. during this test period, aircraft traffic and its related noise from low flying planes caused distress to many Elmhurst residents. The City of Elmhurst encouraged residents to voice concern by filling out a survey on the RRP Test #3, conveying its impact on Elmhurst to the ONCC. The next Ad Hoc Fly Quiet Committee meeting is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. At that time, CDA is expected to present two or three options for an Interim Fly Quiet Plan. The Committee could potentially vote on an option at that meeting, which will then go to the full ONCC for approval. It is anticipated that the earliest an Interim Fly Quiet plan would start would be 2018.

The City of Elmhurst is waiting for a response from the ONCC on this request.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Aggravated driving while license suspended

Nov. 2 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 7:43 a.m., Sean Widener, 21, of Elmhurst, was found to have a suspended driver’s license. According to police, Widener had been issued a restricted driving permit requiring a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device (BAIID), but was operating a vehicle without the device. He was charged with aggravated driving while license suspended, driving without a BAIID and expired registration.

Battery

Nov. 8 Juan Galindo, 40, of Melrose Park, was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery in a public way near Butterfield and Princeton at around 12:03 p.m. Police said Galindo admitted to intentionally striking the victim who had been performing road construction in the area.

Nov. 5 A victim in the 300 block of E. Adams told police at around 2:40 p.m. that he parked his vehicle in the driveway overnight and noticed the next morning that the driver’s side mirror had been damaged.

Disorderly conduct

Nov. 5 Police said a reporting officer responded to the report of someone who had been found unconscious in front of a restau-rant in the 500 block of W. Lake at around 4:46 a.m.

According to police, Michael T. Delaney, 29, of Bensenville, told police that he had been drinking at several bars. Police said the suspect took an Uber to the restaurant, where he passed out on the grass. Delaney was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Nov. 5 Police said a reporting officer was on patrol near First and York at around 2:56 p.m. when a young boy was seen being grabbed by a man.

The suspect said he did that to stop the victim from yelling and swearing at his mother. His mother advised that the victim, who is 8 years old, called his mother a derogatory term, was disruptive, and was creating a scene. Family Shelter was advised.

CALL 800-222-TIPS Nov. 4 A victim in the 600 block of Lorraine told police at around 5:46 p.m. that a suspect beat her, pulled her hair, and left her in a car. The suspect stated that the victim was beating him and he exited the vehicle to get out of the situation. Neither party had any injuries and agreed to stay separated for the night.

Nov. 3

A 27-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 200 block of E. Fremont at around 7:01 a.m. Police said officers responded for the victim who was punched in the face by the suspect. The victim and suspect had a verbal argument which later turned physical, according to police. While speaking with the victim, the officer observed physical signs of injury on the victim’s face, police said.

Nov. 2 A 45-year-old Addison woman was charged with domestic battery at a restaurant in the 100 block of Addison at around 6:04 p.m. A victim told police that the suspect came into the business screaming. The victim followed the suspect into the parking lot, where she started hitting the victim. A reporting officer observed a cut and scratch on the victim, all of which were bleeding.

Nov. 6 Darius Urbikas, 33, of Aurora, was charged with possession of open alcohol, driving while license suspended, operating a vehicle with suspended registration, speeding and no insurance, while Victoria Collaizzi, 26, of Forest Park, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of open alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 11:32 p.m.

Calvin A. Walls Jr., 28, of Broadview, was charged with DUI-drugs and no seat belt near Grand and Wilson at around 5:01 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Walls Jr. had glassy eyes and an odor of burnt cannabis on his breath. Walls Jr admitted to smoking and possessing cannabis, according to police.

Nov. 4 Alvaro Tolayo, 46, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated DUI, improper parking on the roadway and no insurance near York and Second at around 10:43 p.m. Police said that subsequent to investigating a suspicious vehicle parked in the roadway, Tolayo was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

Nov. 3 Robert D. Elliot, 64, of Naperville, was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance subsequent to an accident in the 700 block of W. North at around 6:25 a.m.

Lucas Villarreal, 36, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, no valid driver’s license and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Spring and Madison at around 12:05 a.m.

Nov. 3 Joshua Murray, 19, and Alexander Krieman, 19, both of Bartlett, were issued citations for possession of cannabis sub-sequent to police investigating a suspicious vehicle at Elmhurst College at around 10:33 p.m.

Victoria Julie Stankiewicz, 21, of Addison, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Glade at around 8:14 a.m.

James Uhrich, 21, of Wheaton, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia at Elmhurst College at around 2:29 p.m.

A suspect at York High School was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia at around 1:41 p.m. after she was seen in the hallway showing other students drug paraphernalia in her backpack, according to police.

Harassment, threats

Nov. 6 The manager of a restaurant in the 500 block of W. Lake told police at around 11:54 a.m. that a suspect had previously been an employee at the restaurant but had been terminated. The suspect continues call the restaurant and show up in person after being told many times to stop. A reporting officer located the suspect and served him with a no trespass notice.

Nov. 3 A victim in the 300 block of S. Prairie told police at around 12:58 p.m. that a suspect had made some threatening statements over the phone on Nov. 2. The victim was given information about obtaining an order of protection.

Obstruction

Nov. 2

Vanessa Rio, 30, of Bensenville, was charged with obstructing identification, driving while license suspended, driving with one headlight and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Crestview at around 11:48 p.m.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Nov. 7 Martin Lopez, 19, of Hanover Park; John Portillo, 20, of Addison; and Misael Morales-Reynoso, 19, of Glendale Heights, were charged with felony possession of cannabis, while Portillo and Morales-Reynoso also were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a drug investigation at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 8:50 p.m.

Nov. 5 Police said that subsequent to a traffic incident near York and Butterfield at around 7:56 a.m., Jeri L. Cruz, 60, of River Grove, was found to be driving under the influence of heroin. Cruz was charged with possession of a controlled substance and DUI-drugs.

Jerry Johnson, 32, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near York and I-290 at around 7:15 p.m.

Police said officers responded to an extended stay facility in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 12:12 a.m. where Alex Struve, 19, of Oak Park, had an active original arrest warrant out of the Lombard Police Department.

Nov. 4 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 1:17 a.m., Kwynta Roberts, 21, of Chi-cago, was found to have two active arrest warrants. Lost in time without my calendar

Our family calendar is an information multi-tasker. Each year I purchase one with large monthly pages and ample, oversized daily squares so I have plenty of room to write the myriad of time-sensitive tidbits that decorate the pages and give meaning to our days, weeks, months and the year as a whole.

I know this is a little old-fashioned. I have calendars on my phone and computer, but I still like to have the hard copy paper version that I can hang on a hook on the wall in the kitchen.

I keep track of everything on our calendar. Paydays are circled in red.

Payments due are listed on the top right corner of each month. Jobs completed and waiting for payment are written at the upper left corner.

Sports schedules are listed at the top of daily squares; appointments are assigned to the middle. Birthdays are recorded at the bottom as are days with no school. Weddings, baby showers, graduations and other such

happenings are scrawled wherever I can find room. Phone numbers are sometimes recorded at the bottom of a page. Occasionally the word v-ac-a-t-i-o-n spreads across numerous days.

My calendar tells me where to go and what to do. With one quick glance I get a visual on how many days I have to prepare for Thanksgiving or whether my husband’s birthday falls on a Thursday or Friday.

By this time of year, the calendar is well-used and well-worn. It has been examined, peered at, studied and scrutinized so many times that its pages are no longer stapled neatly

together. The binding gave out midway into the year and April now rests atop July with May and June somewhere after December. It no longer hangs neatly on its hook but nestles in a spot on the kitchen table. Despite its reckless appearance, the significance of the calendar remains intact.

It keeps me on track and I’d be lost without it.

I not only would be; I am.

The best I can figure, it happened the Sunday before Halloween. We were carving pumpkins and the kitchen and dining room were just a little bit busy, not to mention messy.

We’d layered newspapers and cardboard over the tables and counters to protect them from pumpkin innards.

It was a serious and intense contest situation. Even the youngest among us wielded a large, sharp knife.

You can’t carve pumpkins without having to clean up afterward. Here’s where I believe the folly occurred.

The rag-tag (albeit essential) calendar must have been inadvertently

innocent calendar – was long gone, destined to spend eternity in a landfill with a bunch of pumpkin goo.

Dead, but not forgotten.

That was days ago (I think, I’m not sure without my calendar). I’ve already ordered a calendar for 2018, but that doesn’t do me any good now.

I’ve got nearly two full months of 2017 left and no calendar to prove it.

And a person can’t buy a calendar in November – not for the current year, at least. They sold out last January.

So for the next six or seven weeks, I guess I’m lost.

Sort of like my calendar.

swept up and away during the frenzied collection and removal of cardboard, newspaper and wet pumpkin goo.

Of course we didn’t realize it at the time. It wasn’t until Tuesday morning that I had a need to glance at the calendar. Its spot on the kitchen table was decidedly empty. I searched behind the TV and computer. I looked in the bedrooms and on top of the fridge, but there wasn’t a day or month to be found. How could we lose a large, oversized multi-paged calendar? The reality of the situation descended like a pile of pumpkin goo falling to the floor.

Maybe, in the thralls of pumpkin carving clean up, someone threw out the calendar. A panic shuddered through my entire being. Then the true horror hit. It was Tuesday.

It’s easy to begin. Find something, anything, that you are so glad you have in your life. Write or say the sentence – I am so happy and grateful that I have food on my table every single day. I am so happy and grateful that I have clean safe running water and a flushing toilet every single day.

I am so happy and grateful that I have a home with a bed, heat, and many many more comforts and luxuries.

Your list could go on and on. Do so.

Let your gratitudes go deeper.

Think or list them on paper. I am grateful for X. I am grateful for X. I am grateful for X. Usually three is all it takes to create an internal shift. If you spend two minutes in bed before you hit the shower every morning (or do this in the shower if you feel really stretched for time) mentally listing all the things you are thankful for, your day will go smoother. This simple exercise changes your internal chemistry. For real. Science backs this up.

Gratitude builds up your resilience.

Even if things go haywire later in the day, you handle it better. You don’t feel so pummeled by challenges. You

Let the practice go even deeper. Being thankful for x, y, and z is wonderful. Allow that to generate an overall sense of appreciation for all the nuances. When you notice and are grateful for a glorious meal, you also can appreciate the presentation, the nice plates, the feel of the silverware in your hand, the sensation of the flavors, the conversation around the table, and on and on. It takes only seconds and has lasting impact for your overall health and wellbeing.

The focus is on more than being grateful for good food (or whatever; there are countless examples), it’s all the layers that go with it. Young children are sometimes taught to thank the farmers for growing the food, the truckers that haul that food, the grocers that stock the food, the parents that buy the food. There are unending levels of appreciation for every little

York honors ‘Dukes of Distinction’ at reception

On Thursday, Nov. 2, a reception was held in the Commons of York High School for this year’s class of Dukes of Distinction. Selected by a committee of judges, the six persons chosen have distinguished themselves through significant and extraordinary accomplishments, service and outstanding contributions to society.

The honorees exemplify the honored York traditions of teamwork and selflessness.

The program began with a welcome by Jay Webb, class of 1975, president of the York High School Alumni Association. York Principal Erin DeLuga served as Master of Ceremonies and introduced Dr. David Moyer, District 205 Superintendent of Schools, and Shannon Ebner, Board of Education president. Ebner and Board vice-president Jim Collins presented the awards.

Brigadier General Thomas Fisher, class of 1986, represented by Foy and Lucy Fisher; Linda French, class of 1982; Dr. Judith Bond Johnson, clas of 1955; and Mary McEnerney Woolley, class of 1964.

Simple steps may reduce depression triggers during the holidays Depressive disorders don’t take holidays. Stress management can be key to maintaining mental health.

It is no secret that the holiday season can be a stressful time. With family gatherings, office parties, gift exchanges, and other demands on our time and attention, the final month of the year can be a trying time for even the most optimistic and enthusiastic people.

For individuals who suffer

from or are at risk for depression, though, the impact of holiday stresses and pressures can be much more severe than the momentary frustrations that almost everyone experiences.

For example, some of the common triggers for the onset of a depressive episode, such as feeling overwhelmed, experiencing a sense of isolation or deprivation, and having personal conflicts, are also common holiday experi-

ences.

For individuals who are at risk for depression, here are five simple tips that can help keep triggers at bay during the holiday season: Stay Organized – Considerable holiday stress is related to feeling overwhelmed or out of time. Planning ahead can help eliminate or ease some of this pressure.

Learn to Say No – You do not have to accept every invitation that comes your way.

Giving yourself time to relax and decompress during the holidays is more important than yet another party.

Set Realistic Expectations – There is no such thing as a “perfect holiday,” and trying to create one is an invitation to disappointment. On the other side of the coin, don’t allow dread to destroy your ability to enjoy the season.

Take Care of Yourself – Sugary and high-fat foods, which are staples during the

holidays, can drain your energy and increase your risk getting sick. Enjoy a sweet here and there, but do not abandon your healthy diet. Also, make sure that you are getting some exercise and enough sleep.

Get Help When You Need It – The holidays are definitely not the time to go it alone.

ICGS recognizes All Saints Day Wednesday, Nov. 1, was All Saints Day, a Catholic holy day of obligation. The staff, students, parents, and grandparents of Immaculate Conception Grade School gathered for an all-school Mass in the IC Chapel.

As is a long-standing tradition, first grade students dressed as their patron saints and processed into the Chapel at the start of Mass.

Over the past month, the first grade students had researched their

patron saints as part of their Religion lessons. Afterward, the school held an informational coffee for preschool and kindergarten parents, providing them with information about the transition into first grade and beyond.

Elmhurst resident wins top honors at Siemens Competition After regional win, Neil Wary headed to Washington DC for nationals

Three students were named National Finalists in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology after earning top spots in one of two regional competitions that took place recently at the University of Notre Dame.

Among the top three was Neil Wary of Elmhurst, who earned top individual honors and a $3,000 scholarship for using CRISPR/Cas9 to investigate a rare life-threatening genetic disease called CHARGE syndrome. He was among 101 students overall selected to compete in regional competition from a pool of more than 1,860 projects submitted for the competition.

Neil and the other regional winners now move to the final phase of the Siemens Competition to present their work at the National Finals on Dec. 4-5 in Washington, D.C., where $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including two top prizes of $100,000.

“These high school students are doing complex graduate student level research,” said David Etzwiler, CEO of the Siemens Foundation. “We’re proud to support them and to further their efforts to improve our world.”

Neil’s project used a groundbreaking new gene-editing tool called CRISPR/Cas9 to investigate a rare lifethreatening genetic disease called CHARGE syndrome.

CHARGE affects many areas of the body, and is characterized by impairments in vision and the central nervous system, heart defects, blockages of the nasal passages, growth retardation, genital abnormalities, ear anomalies and sometimes deafness. Children with CHARGE often experience delays in development and communication, as well as behavioral difficulties including autism.

Often, the difficulty with studying human diseases is recreating them in the lab. Using CRISPR, Neil developed a “disease-in-a-dish” model of CHARGE, recreating the genetic disorder in a petri dish to better understand it

Using the method, he discovered a unique link between the genetic mutations that cause CHARGE and blood vessel dysfunctions associated with heart and other vascular features that characterize the syndrome. The research could one day lay the groundwork for treating the disease.

“Neil Wary’s devotion to studying CHARGE syndrome-a life-threatening genetic disorder-was truly admirable,” said Dr. Pinar Zorlutuna, assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical engineering at Notre Dame

Neil’s plans for the future Always passionate about biology, Neil stated his belief that biology “helps us learn more about ourselves, and how to live a better life.”

“There are a lot of things we can’t control in our lives, but our own health and body shouldn’t be one of them,” he said.

One of his proudest accomplishments is having his research on epigenetic and regenerative biology published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal, PLOS ONE. When he grows up, Neil hopes to become a physician and scientist.

Neil is the director of his school’s STEM outreach program, which has developed a mentoring program and created curricula for workshops and summer camps. Outside of school, Neil plays the violin in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.

County Health Department supports CDC’s new Be Antibiotics Aware educational effort when bacteria no longer respond to the drugs designed to kill them.

Be Antibiotics Aware provides educational resources to help healthcare professionals improve antibiotic prescribing. Be Antibiotics Aware educates the public on what illnesses antibiotics treat, how to take antibiotics appropriately, and that antibiotics can have minor to very severe side effects.

Antibiotics are critical tools for treating a number of common infections, such as pneumonia, and for life-threatening conditions including sepsis. Antibiotics are only needed for

treating certain infections caused by bacteria. Antibiotics also won’t help some common bacterial infections including most cases of bronchitis, many sinus infections, and some ear infections.

Any time antibiotics are used, they can cause side effects and lead to antibiotic resistance. When antibiotics aren’t needed, they won’t help, and the side effects could still hurt you.

Common side effects range from things like rashes and yeast infections to severe health problems like Clostridium difficile infection (also called C. difficile or C. diff), which causes

diarrhea that can lead to severe colon damage and death.

If you need antibiotics, take them exactly as prescribed. Patients and families can talk to their healthcare professional if they have any questions about their antibiotics, or if they develop side effects, especially diarrhea, since that could be C. difficile, which needs to be treated.

Antibiotics do not work on viruses, such as colds and flu, or runny noses, even if the mucus is thick, yellow or green. Respiratory viruses usually go away in a week or two without treatment. Patients and families can ask

their healthcare professional about the best way to feel better while their body fights off the virus.

Antibiotics save lives. When a patient needs antibiotics, the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects and antibiotic resistance. Improving the way we take antibiotics helps keep us healthy now, helps fight antibiotic resistance, and ensures that life-saving antibiotics will be available for future generations.

I’m glad the Illinois Senate worked together in a bipartisan manner to take the necessary steps to promote a fiscally-sound budget. ” Currently, state law requires that on October 1 agencies report the annual aggregate amount of pending unpaid bills that were being held as of June 30. The comptroller’s office then publishes the outdated information on their website.

This new law will now require state agencies to report the amount of unpaid bills, whether that amount was

appropriated or not and an estimate of interest penalties accumulated on a monthly basis.

“This new law will help promote fiscal responsibility,” Cullerton said.

“Good government begins with accountability and transparency. State officials and agencies have an obligation to be transparent and open with the way we spend valuable state dollars.”

Cullerton believes real-time accounting will help the state’s financial officers as well the General Assembly have a realistic outlook on state finances when making budgetary decisions.

‘Monster Eats’ opens in downtown Elmhurst Joins forces with Chow Catering

In the building that still houses Chow Catering at 116 W. Park Ave., Monster Eats quietly opened its doors late last month. Chow Catering has been at the location across from the Elmhurst Metra station for 12 years.

Current owner Lee Varon decided to bring an updated menu to the revamped dining area. While still preparing the Chow Catering menu, and serving gluten-free and Paleo-friendly prepared meals, there is now a selection of hot and cold chef-driven sandwiches, sliders made from in-house ground bison and beef short rib, housemade duck fat fried potato chips, kids meals including six kinds of peanut butter sandwiches, and innovative desserts.

Makes a name for disarming intruder Varon is best known from his last restaurant, The Squared Circle in Lincoln Park, where his creative menu was featured on Chicago’s Best TV, Travel Channel’s Food Paradise, WGNTV, in the Chicago Tribune, the Redeye, and Thrillist to name a few. Although he may be equally as well-known from a viral video covered by TMZ Sports and several news stations where he disarmed and detained an armed intruder in The Squared Circle, an event caught by security cameras.

Other members of the Monster Eats and Chow Catering kitchen team include Chef Eddie Carrere. He is a local resident who started in Chicago area restaurants when he was 14 years old. He attributes his unique cooking style to a culinary journey that took him through Cleveland, New York, Washington DC, and culminated with a six month stint in Mexico. Monster Eats and Chow Catering is his first opportunity to showcase some of his newfound culinary skills since returning to the area.

Grand opening planned for Sunday Monster Eats will be hosting a Grand Opening event on Sunday, Nov. 19 from 5-10 p.m. Former WWE Diva Victoria will be on hand to host. A selection of several menu items will be served, including gourmet sliders. There will be beer and wine samples, as well as a free raffle for WWE merchandise. There will also be a screening of the live WWE pay per view Survivor Series.

To promote government transparency and accountability, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) championed the passage of the Illinois Debt Transparency Act. Cullerton joined the Illinois Senate in voting to override Governor Rauner’s veto of House Bill 3649, which requires state agencies to provide a more accurate accounting of bills and late payment interest penalties accruing.

“Illinois taxpayers deserve to know how their money is spent,” Cullerton said. “This measure encourages responsible budgeting and the honest

Forest Preserve District Board approves 2017 Tax Levy

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County Board of Commissioners approved the agency’s $49.2 million 2017 tax levy, which represents an 8.9 percent decrease over the prior year and will support the 2017 – 2018 fiscal year budget.

The District decreased the levy by $4.8 million, which would mean about a $20 decrease in property taxes for the average DuPage County homeowner. The levy translates to approximately $145 in property taxes for the owner of a $300,000 home.

For every dollar spent in property taxes by DuPage County residents, about 2 cents supports the District.

“By remaining vigilant to adhering to sound financial practices, we have been able to decrease the tax levy significantly from the prior year,” said Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore.

The District maintains a balanced general fund that matches operating expenses with current-period revenues. Operations are funded primarily by property taxes.

Hospital completes renovation of emergency department Elmhurst Hospital has completed a renovation and expansion project that has increased the size of its Emergency Department (ED) from 31 to 39 rooms. The additional eight beds give the ED the ability to handle 12,000 – 15,000 more visits a year, which means shorter wait times for ED patients. The ED, when it opened in 2011, was designed to handle an annual volume of 55,000 patients.

But, in 2016, 65,405 patients were treated in the ED, compared to 51,190 patient visits in 2012, the ED’s first full year of operation. IC Catholic Prep freshman girls cross-country standout Frankie Chaidez might need some help in the prognostication department—but in a good way.

Chaidez said she was striving for a top 25 finish at the recent Class 1A girls state finals meet in Peoria at Detweiller Park.

The end result? Try 22 places higher.

Chaidez finished third in Class 1A and in the process became the first-ever IC Catholic Prep girls cross-country runner to finish that high.

“It was very unexpected,” said Chaidez, who ran a personal record at the state meet. “It feels amazing.”

Chaidez said her strategy in the meet was nothing out of the ordinary. “I didn’t have anything special,” she said.

“I was consistent. I tried to stay with the top people while finishing strong at the last stretch.”

Chaidez recalled the final part of the race that included some jockeying for position. “I passed one person coming down the stretch (and was in second for a time). I started to sprint and passed one person and then I got

He’s an ICCP guy Despite suffering a season-ending injury, Knights’ QB Luke Ricobene remains a key part of the team

IC Catholic Prep senior quarterback Luke Ricobene had everything going in his favor on the football field.

Ricobene was fresh off leading the Knights to the 2016 Class 3A state title and was poised to play another significant role in the team’s title defense this fall.

Those plans were scrapped in Week 2 when Ricobene suffered a season-ending knee injury in what has turned out to be the team’s lone loss of the season thus far to St. Laurence out of Burbank.

But instead of leaving the team to concentrate on his rehabilitation, Ricobene has done the exact opposite. IC Catholic Prep coach Bill Krefft points out Ricobene has been at every practice and has a hand in the team’s preparations.

“He hasn’t missed a day since his injury,” said Krefft. “He runs drills at practice and is part of game planning and play-calling. He’s an IC man.”

Ricobene tries to downplay his presence on the team.

“I’m not that much involved,” he said earlier last week. “I’m still at practice every day working with the quarterbacks on offensive days and with the defensive backs on defensive days. I stay with the coaches and help the players with some moral support and help them with whatever questions they have.”

Given the circumstances, Ricobene wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love being with this team,” he said.

“I would do anything to be with them. It’s just as good being with them every day in practice and seeing them succeed in games. This is a team that could do something real special this year.”

Ricobene said the shock and disappointment concerning the injury took some getting used to.

“At first it was hard,” he said.

“And then I got over it. All I’m focused on now is enjoying my time with all my brothers, teammates and coaches. I enjoy every day being around the guys and seeing them win.”

Ricobene admitted the first week after the injury was particularly rough. “It took a while,” he said.

“The first week was hard with getting acclimated to a new position on the team and realizing I wouldn’t be playing. Once I got over the initial hump of being injured, things settled in and I accepted my role here and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it so far.”

Looking back at the injury, Ricobene had a notion that the news was not going to be good about his knee.

“I had a feeling,” he said. “I kind of heard a pop and I’ve heard everyone that has had a knee situation like that they heard a pop.”

And to boot, the Knights lost what was their first game in over a calendar year after going 14-0 the previous season.

“The loss was hard,” he said. “But

these guys haven’t let any setback affect them at all. They have been playing good football ever since and haven’t looked back. They are playing really good football.”

Ricobene isn’t surprised in the least bit the Knights are thriving once again. “For one, the coaches haven’t let anybody become complacent,” he said. “They push the players every week.”

And Ricobene has been impressed with the players who replaced him at the quarterback positions. “Khalil Saunders took over at first and then CJ West came in and has done a great job,” he said. “CJ is one of the best quarterbacks in the state right now and I can honestly say that.”

But Ricobene has noticed many players stepping up throughout the team throughout the season.

“We’ve had so many different people play well and step up,” he said. “Dylan Packer is a great leader for us and there are a lot of seniors and juniors who are stepping up big time,” he said.

In addition to an offense that has racked up massive statistical numbers, the Knights also have been equally up to snuff on the defensive end.

“I wouldn’t say our defense has been underestimated,” he said.

“People respect our defense. We have a great defense. We have Khali Saunders, Kevin Cooke and Kemon Reese at linebacker. They are intimidating to every team they play.

They are amazing. Lazerick Eatman, Khalil Saunders and Sean Hipskind are defensive backs who can lock down everybody. Our defense is stingy. They play hard every game.

Any point the other team comes by against our defense is earned.”

Ricobene also lauded on several occasions the effort of the IC Catholic Prep coaching staff.

“It’s no secret we have the best coaching staff in the state,” he said.

“Coach Krefft is great. I can’t say enough about him. Our coaching staff is perfect. They execute well and coach us and prepare us well.

We are a prepared football team every game because of what they do for us in practice every day.”

Ricobene said his recovery from the injury is on schedule. “Rehab is going pretty well,” he said. “I’ve made a lot of progress. I think I’m on track for what the doctor expects from this kind of injury moving forward.”

He noted the injury hasn’t put a damper on the college recruiting process. “It’s just the fact I don’t have a lot of senior film to send the coaches,” he said. “Everybody I have talked to hasn’t stopped talking to me. There’s just been less opportunity for them to see me.”

Ricobene added he has no timetable for making a decision on his college future. “There’s a long way to go before I make that decision,” he said. “I have too many things on my mind with the season going on right now.”

The atmosphere and course at Detweiller met with Chaidez’s approval.

“I liked it,” she said. “It was very flat.

I liked the weather. It was cold and rainy. For me that’s when I’m at my best. It worked out for me.”

Chaidez said nerves did not factor into the equation, despite being on the biggest stage in the state as a freshman.

“I was not really nervous,’” she said.

Chaidez started running track and field in the fifth grade and started running cross-country in the seventh grade.

“My coach at the time (current IC Catholic Prep girls coach Dawn Calcagno) got me into it,” she said. “She wanted me to try out and I ended up

liking it and stuck with it.”

Chaidez has a hard time putting into words why she likes the sport so much.

“Running is like, it’s hard to explain,” she started. “I feel free when I run. You feel really peaceful. It’s a peaceful time and that’s why I love it. It’s a free time for me.”

Chaidez, who also played baseball (not softball) for 10 years, shot down the notion that quickness is one of her great attributes. “I guess I’m fast,” she said. “In track I started out as a sprinter.

In fifth grade, that’s when I noticed I was good at running.”

Cross country, however, wasn’t the only sport keeping Chaidez busy this fall. She also played volleyball on the freshman team.

“I ran in the cross-country meets

on Saturday and did a few during the week as well,” she said. “It’s kind of hard balancing both. Sometimes I would run in the morning and on days off I would run. I’d have volleyball right after school and school right after volleyball. I was busy but I enjoyed it.

Any free time I had, I was doing running.”

As for the future, Chaidez, who is involved in a host of extra-curricular activities at IC Catholic Prep, already has her sights set on next year.

“This motivates me a lot for next season,” said Chaidez, who plans on running track in the spring for the Knights. “Finishing third tells me how much harder I need to work for next season and maybe I can get higher than third.”

Timothy Christian sophomore Hope Clark ends season at state cross-country meet

Timothy Christian sophomore girls cross-country runner Hope Clark ran the sport competitively for the first time last year as a freshman. A year later, thanks to good, old-fashioned elbow grease, Clark found herself running in the recent Class 1A state finals meet in Peoria where she finished in 62nd place.

“Making state means a lot,” said Clark, the week of the state finals meet. “I worked pretty hard over the last two seasons.”

In addition to her normal in-season workouts with the Timothy girls team, Clark also put in plenty of work on her own. “I ran all summer and I ran during the track season,” she said. “I did about 150 miles over the summer.”

Clark also improved on the mental aspect of the sport. “I got better this season,” she said. “I guess I really pushed myself harder. Last year was my first year and things were a little easier. But I started pushing myself when I kept seeing improvement. I’ve learned to push myself a lot more even if it’s not necessarily easy.”

Prior to her freshman season at Timothy, Clark was not a full-time runner. “I didn’t run as a sport, but I would run every spring in a 5K race that would raise money for people with leukemia. A second cousin of mine passed away from that,” she explained. “I did that for the last 10 years and would train for it in the spring. I ran in it the spring before freshman year and did alright and thought based on my time that I might be alright at

running.” It’s turned out to me more than just alright. “I had no idea how much I have learned to love to run,” she said. “I like the opportunity to go out there and push myself and improve on what I’ve done. The sport teaches you to work hard and teaches you about endurance.”

Clark, who does Christian ministry work in her spare time, also is a big fan of the Timothy girls cross-country environment. “I like the community of the team,” she said. “They are my best friends.”

And Clark was able to wrap a bow around a successful sophomore season by finishing it in Peoria on the famed Detweiller Park course. “Going downstate was one of my big goals to get this season,” she said. “It was kind of my big goal for the season.”

IC Catholic Prep football team headed to state semifinals Knights to face off against Byron for trip to finals

It’s back to the state semifinals for the IC Catholic Prep football team.

The Knights continued defense of their Class 3A state title with a 4621 victory over Wilmington in Class 3A state quarterfinal action at Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 11-1 overall and puts it in the semifinals Saturday against Byron, which defeated Williamsville 13-0

in another quarterfinal game.

IC Catholic Prep is the No. 5 seed on the top half of the Class 3A bracket, while Byron, located west of Rockford on Illinois 72, is the No. 3 seed. Byron is undefeated at 120. The winner of Saturday’s game heads to the state finals at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb on Thanksgiving weekend.

In the win against Wilmington, a team the Knights also defeated last year in the playoffs, quarterback CJ West completed 5 of 8 passes for 91

yards and two touchdowns.

The Knights racked up 293 yards rushing on only 22 carries (13.3 yards per carry). Lazerick Eatman ran eight times for 227 yards and scored three touchdowns. He had a 90-yard run and also scored a twopoint conversion. West ran eight times for 52 yards and a touchdown, while Kyle Franklin ran five times for 11 yards.

Eatman has now run for 1,232 yards and has 19 rushing touch-

downs, while West has 24 passing touchdowns against only three interceptions and has thrown for 1,681 yards.

Khali Saunders caught two passes for 27 yards and a touchdown. Jacob Lytton had a 36-yard touchdown catch, while Kevin Cooke had two catches for 28 yards.

The Knights amassed 384 yards of total offense.

On defense, Cooke led the way with 17 tackles. Kemon Reese had

eight tackles, while Michael Johnson and Kevin Akins each had seven. Ryan Malek had six tackles.

Koby Reed recorded one quarterback sack.

Khali Saunders had a 25-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Cooke caused a fumble and recovered one. Johnson also had a fumble recovery, while Khalil Saunders had a pass deflection.

The Knights now are 25-1 over the last two seasons.

Up next: The winner of this game heads to Northern Illinois University’s Huskies Stadium on Thanksgiving weekend to play for the Class 3A state title against either Pleasant Plains or Anna-Jonesboro.

Outlook: IC Catholic Prep now is two wins away from successfully defending its Class 3A state title. The Knights posted 46 points in their quarterfinal win against Wilmington, the 10th time this season that they have scored 40 or more points in a game. The Knights now turn their attention to Byron, a school located west of Rockford on Illinois 72. The Tigers play in the Big Northern Conference and have scored 30 or more points in nine of their 12 games this season. Byron’s playoff victories have been by scores of 28-7, 21-20 and 13-0. The 13-0 triumph came against No. 2 seed Williamsville last week on the road.

This will be Byron’s third home playoff game of the season. Looking ahead, the winner of this game goes against either No. 3 seed (on the bottom of the bracket) Anna-Joneboro (12-0) or upset-minded Pleasant Plains, which is in the semifinals as the No. 16 seed on the bottom bracket and has a 9-3 record.

This season marked the third year in a row that the Timothy Christian boys cross-country team qualified for the Class 1A state finals meet.

And veteran Clint Fincher knows exactly why this year’s group was able to extend that streak to three.

“We have a lot of hard workers,” he said. “A guy like Will Terpstra worked his butt off over the summer.

He ran more than 400 miles and ran a half-marathon. All the guys worked very hard this year and we all have a lot of spirit, which is really great.”

Timothy finished 21st at the state meet with Fincher leading the way with a 65th place finish. The above-mentioned Terpstra was 82nd

and sophomore Caleb Mitchell was 91st. Also running in Peoria were Alex Oldenburger, Simon Detmer, Noah Bezanson and sophomore Tristan Iwema.

And Fincher also was impressed with the compatibility aspect that factored into the success recipe.

“The team aspect is great,” said Fincher the week of the Class 1A state finals meet. “There is a big family atmosphere here. We hang out away from cross country. We go to Culver’s every Saturday after meets and we’ve had a few pasta parties.

There’s a lot of community with the team.”

In terms of his own individual improvement, Fincher focused on his pace. “I worked a lot on it,” he said.

“Before, I was not going out well.

I’ve also been having more fun with running this year. Last year, I fell into a role where I was holding back and didn’t try to go beyond that. This year I’ve taken myself further and gone beyond. It’s a lot more fun when you try to do that with yourself.”

Fincher noted that this year’s roster had three returners from last year’s top seven and one alternate. He was thrilled the team was able to continue its recent streak of state appearances.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “I really wanted us to get downstate this year again, especially for guys like Will who worked so hard. After last year, we didn’t want to miss out on something like this again. It’s something we have been looking forward to.”

York girls basketball team begins Collings era Dukes return numerous key players from last year’s 15-win team

New York girls basketball coach Brandon Collings has inherited a situation where the cupboard is far from bare.

The Dukes return a number of key contributors from a 2016-2017 team that went 15-13 overall and took sixth place in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division with a 4-8 record. York reached a Class 4A regional title game last year.

Back for York this year are seniors Danielle Dennis and Caylin Rufus, along with junior Kathleen Levins.

Dennis, a shooting guard, averaged 14.0 points and 6.3 rebounds to go with 1.7 steals per game as a junior.

Collings noted Dennis is currently un-

decided as to which college she will play basketball at next season.

Rufus, a guard-forward, averaged 8.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game as a junior and will continue her career at NCAA Division II Upper Iowa University next season.

Levins, a forward, averaged 5.0 points and 3.0 rebounds as a sophomore.

Also back are seniors Madison Park (point guard), Lauren Viola (forward), Hailey Walker (guard) and Lauren Kjome (guard-forward).

Key newcomers to the team include shooting guards Matty Stark and Kiah Rufus and junior forward Emily Rohman.

“We have a strong and talented senior class returning this year,” said

Collings. “We are returning more than 70 percent of our scoring from last year’s team. I am hoping we can take advantage of all our experience and turn the close losses, which we suffered last year, into wins this year.”

Collings said the goal is to be right in the thick of things in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division race.

“Our expectation for the regular season is to compete for a conference title,” said Collings. “We have a very experienced, athletic and deep team that will look to pressure the ball defensively, push the basketball up the floor and execute our half-court offense.”

York opened play earlier this week in its own Thanksgiving tournament

against Niles West and Downers Grove South. The Dukes play tonight against Yorkville in the tournament at 6 p.m. The tournament wraps up Friday.

The Dukes’ first conference game is Nov. 28 at home against Lyons Township. The Dukes head to Riverside-Brookfield for Christmas tournament action.

A successful candidate will have strong painting and drywall patching skills. Other tasks include: plumbing, carpentry, general building repair, deliveries, room set-ups for meetings, and snow removal. Ice skating at Red Arrow Park Glide across the ice in a beautiful downtown park setting with Slice of Ice. This outdoor rink is open December through February for an extra-long skating season. The refrigerated rink can accommodate 100 skaters at a time and is bordered by a railing, so even the newest of skaters can still enjoy the ice. Visit the warming house for a coffee, beer or bakery goody. With floor-to-ceiling windows, you’ll still have a view of everything on the ice.

Tour the Pabst Mansion The Captain Frederick Pabst Mansion is a fascinating place to visit any time of the year, but their elaborately decorated holiday rooms are a sight to see. This must-visit, first-class American home is the former residence of the Pabst Family, of Pabst Brewing Company. Accompany your history lesson with enchanting décor to put you in the holiday spirit.

Keep some helpful tips in mind to ensure another safe hunting season in Wisconsin It is no accident Wisconsin is known nationally as one of the safest places to hunt deer for the whole family and friends.

“This state is fortunate to have thousands of volunteer hunter education instructors dedicated to keeping everyone safe while enjoying the outdoors,” Hunter Education Administrative Warden Jon King said. “And you have to credit the hunters who carry on that safety priority during their own hunts and as mentors. This is what makes Wisconsin a great hunting state - the people.”

How does Wisconsin keep the safety trend alive? King says more incidents can be prevented by following these four basic principles of firearm safety - known as TABK: Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.

Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.

Be certain of your target and what is beyond it.
