Early last week, the Independent caught up to Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth who reported that there had been a break in the case of several car burglaries and thefts that had been going on for past three months in south Elmhurst.

“After the DuPage Sheriff’s Department arrested someone in the [Yorkfield] unincorporated area, we got involved in the investigation because many of the details were similar to other recent incidents here in Elmhurst,” Ruth told The Independent in an exclusive interview.

On Thursday, Jan. 12, Elmhurst officers responded to a call from a resident on the 800 block of So. Linden Avenue, who spotted a male subject inside their garage. The suspect fled and officers were unable to detain him, Ruth said. There had been other reports of burglaries to unlocked vehicles in the area that were already under investigation.

“When we learned about the arrest of the DuPage Sheriff’s office, we looked into the details,” he said.

“The circumstances matched those we had been seeing in the south Elmhurst area over the recent months [of November, December and January].”

Elmhurst detectives have recovered several items of burglary and theft proceeds that have not yet been associated with any reported vehicle burglaries.

Residents are encouraged to con-

tact the Elmhurst Police Department to document any burglaries or thefts which may have been previously unreported.

“As always, we strongly encourage residents to remove valuables from their parked cars and keep their unattended vehicles locked to pre-

vent theft,” Ruth said.

Anthony has been charged with eight counts of burglary for incidents stemming from the joint investigation.

He is currently being held at the DuPage County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

In a conversation with Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth on Monday, Jan. 30, the Independent learned there had been a case of an employee reportedly slapping a disabled resident of an adult group home in Elmhurst.

Ruth said the incident took place on the 100 block of South Monterey on Wednesday, Jan. 18. The group home is operated by UCP Seguin, which was made aware of the incident through a video recording of the incident. The video showed one of the group home employees striking a seated disabled adult several times.

UCP Seguin immediately brought it to the attention of the Elmhurst Police Department.

On arrival at the group home residence, officers arrested the offender and transported her to the police station, where she was charged, according to Ruth. As a precaution, the victim was taken to an area hospital for examination.

Following an investigation, the offender was identified as Lasonya T. Butler, 43, of the 900 block of N. Drake Ave. in Chicago. She was charged with one count of Aggravated Battery due to the victim’s disabled status. Butler was transported to the DuPage County Jail for arraignment.

“Illinois Adult Protective Services and the Illinois Department of Healthcare were alerted to the incident,” Ruth said. “They are expected to conduct their own investigation.”

Construction began in March and consisted of the demolition and partial removal of the concrete water reservoir, re-grading and restoration of the site, installation of a retaining wall, fence and handrails, and creation of the small “beginner sled hill.” Construction concluded in the summer and cost $118,290.

Although there was no snow on the ground during the event, families received free saucer sleds and hot chocolate provided by Brewpoint Coffee.

The students came to express gratitude for the group’s decision to direct last quarter’s donation to the Elmhurst Music Boosters (EMB).

A Chamber Quintet from York High School performed, as well as a Quintet from the Middle Schools, including Bryan and Sandburg. Tessa Olson and April Fatheree, both 8th graders at Bryan Middle School played a duet.

EMB president Amy Mortenson thanked everyone in the room for giving them the ability to award scholarships and financial aid to deserving students for summer programs and instrument rental.

Mike Pavlik, Performing Arts teacher at York shared a story about how Elmhurst music students are connected with the Synapse House, another organization the group supported just recently.

Later, following the presentations, it was Ray Graham Association – Hansen Center Therapeutic

Horsemanship Program that was selected as the recipient of this quarter’s funds. Introduced by Christine Fiorini, the Hansen Center offers adults with disabilities a chance to experience the therapeutic benefits of horseback riding and all that goes with it — the care and grooming, all the extras that help build a relationship of respect between the horse and rider.

The money raised by 100+WWC will be used to establish an adult scholarship fund at the Hansen Center, covering a year of lessons for adults 22 and older.

Sue Hutchinson for Readers Literacy and to Deb Webb who talked about the Homeless Sandwich Run (Vietnow).

Candidate forum takes place Sunday Hosted by Elmhurst League of Women Voters

This coming Sunday, Feb. 12, the League of Women Voters of Elmhurst will host a Candidate Forum from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Elmhurst City Hall, 209 N. York St. Candidates for the April 4, 2017 Consolidated Elections for Elmhurst Park Board, Elmhurst City Council Aldermen, Elmhurst Unit School District #205 School Board and College of DuPage District #502 Trustees have been invited to speak about their qualifications and vision for their respective positions. After answering some League questions, the candidates will be asked to answer questions submitted in writing from those who are in attendance.

Elmhurst couple sues daycare after child dies Attorney: Owner was alone supervising 20 children when 3-month-old died

Last week, the Independent learned that an Elmhurst couple has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a Lombard day care center following an incident that led to the death of their infant daughter. The suit alleges that it was understaffing at the facility and negligence that led to the child’s loss of life.

Filed Tuesday, Jan. 31 in DuPage County, the lawsuit is against a day care operation called Tender Harts family home care located inside a

Lombard residence. According to the suit, 3-month old Tessa McDaniel had been left unattended and was subject to an injury that led to her death at the facility on Nov. 15.

The law suit alleges Jason Hart, one of the owners of the day care, was supervising 20 children with no other assistance, which is in violation of state standards for child care facilities. Hart had reportedly allowed two other employees to leave the facility.

Tessa was awake in a crib, when Hart picked her up and placed her

on her belly on a blanket on the floor while he retrieved a bottle.

When he returned about 30 minutes later, Tessa was not breathing.

“Licensing standards for day care homes exist for the safety of vulnerable children and must never be violated,” Rene Torrado, an attorney for the McDaniel family, said in one report. “Attempting to supervise and care for 20 children by himself was a recipe for disaster.”

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services con-

firmed Wednesday that it is investigating the child’s death, but a spokeswoman said she was limited in what she could say due to confidentiality issues.

Tender Harts voluntarily shut down after the child’s death and has remained closed while the DCFS investigation is pending, the spokesperson said.

The suit filed by Katlyn and Sean McDaniel, Tessa’s parents, seeks damages of $50,000 or more. One attorney with the case said the McDaniels’ primary concern was child

safety, that they did not want to have this kind of incident happen to any other family.

Elmhurst Park Board capsules The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on Jan. 30 at the district’s administrative building at 375 W. First Street. Commissioner Vincent Spaeth, who is the president of the board, participated via telephone. Commissioner Anthony Pelosi was absent from the meeting.

There were no public comments.

The board meeting featured a presentation about the Elmhurst Great Western Prairie, a section of about 6 acres of land located just north of the Illinois Prairie Path between Spring Road and Salt Creek. The park district manages the Great Western Prairie with assistance from several volunteers. David Price, the park district’s chief horticulturalist, gave the presentation to the board. Price noted that the Illinois Prairie Path occupies the

right of way of the former Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad (CA&E), which was abandoned in 1961. The Great Western Prairie is bordered by two former railroads. The prairie’s north border—near Randolph Avenue—is near the former bed of the Chicago Great Western Railroad. Price said that two-thirds of land in Illinois used to be prairie.

According to Price, only one-tenth of 1 percent of the state’s land was prairie. Most of that prairie land, he said, was located in cemeteries and railroad remnants.

Price said the effort to preserve the Great Western Prairie took hold in the 1970s, when over 200 trees were cleared from the area. He said the first controlled burn at the prairie took place around 1977. The controlled burns help to control invasive plants.

Price told the board that the Great

Western Prairie is home to 12 different species of grasses and several types of wildflowers. He said the land is also a habitat for a multitude of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects.

Price said the park district’s comprehensive plan, which will be updated in 2017, calls for the district to be stewards of the land. The district and volunteers help to preserve the Great Western Prairie by regularly cutting brush, removing invasive plants, clearing litter and holding controlled burns.

The board voted unanimously during the Jan. 30 meeting to approve a reimbursement ordinance related to the district’s recent purchases of three parcels of land. Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers noted that the board recently authorized the three purchases, which amounted to a total

of nearly $2.5 million. He said the district plans to use cash on hand to pay for the purchases and use some type of financing instrument to pay the purchases off over the long term.

In its meeting of Sept. 12, 2016, the board authorized the purchase of a parcel of land at 135 Robert T. Palmer Drive for about $1.8 million.

In its meeting on Oct. 11, 2016, the board approved the purchase of the property at 447 Armitage Ave., for $292,500. The board approved a $415,000 purchase of property at 207 N. Hampshire Ave., at its last meeting on Jan. 17.

The closing for the property on Armitage Avenue was held in December 2016. The closing for the other two properties will take place in March and April of 2017.

three purchases is $2,457,500. The reimbursement ordinance calls for $2.5 million to be reimbursed. The ordinance, however, does not obligate the district to use a financing instrument to pay for the reimbursement, nor does it lock the district into spending $2.5 million on the properties. The amount of any future financing instrument could also include additional money for development of the properties, additional purchases, capital expenditures and demolition costs.

Rogers said the reimbursement ordinance was prepared with the advice from the district’s legal counsel, as well as its bond counsel.

The park district board will hold its next meeting on Feb. 13. That meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at The Hub at Berens Park, 493 N. Oaklawn Ave.

He served in the Airborne and was with a MAC-V Team 3 in Vietnam. He was a decorated Vietnam veteran, serving our country bravely and earning the Bronze Star with Valor and a Purple Heart. Grant was a salesman with Aggregate Engineers for many years. After his retirement, he lived in Nashville, where he enjoyed fast cars and fishing. Jan. 27 A victim at a pharmacy in the 100 block of S. Palmer told police at around 7:45 p.m. he was changing his girlfriend’s tire when he was punched in the face by a suspect. The suspect is the ex-boyfriend of the victim’s girlfriend.

The vehicle drove through the area numerous times causing countersinking of numerous gravestones, damage to an open grave site, and destruction of grave decorations. The vehicle appears to have struck a berm, causing damage to the bumper/air deflector as plastic vehicle parts were left at the scene.

Disorderly conduct, trespass notice

Feb. 1 An offender was charged with disorderly conduct in the 200 block of E. North Ave. at around 2:04 a.m. Police said officers responded to the above location for a domestic, and upon arrival, it was found that the offender had been in an argument with his wife. The complainant confronted the offender about his yelling, and asked him to leave. That is when he walked toward the complainant while yelling, according to police.

Jan. 30 Police said detectives responded to a disturbance on the second floor in the corridor between Academic and Commons building of a high school in the 300 block of W. St. Charles Road at around 11:20 a.m. It was determined the two suspects engaged in a physical fight during a passing period. The girls were separated and admitted to fighting. Both suspects were released to their mothers and will be referred to Peer Jury.

Jan. 27 Officers responded to the complaint of an irate customer in the lobby of an auto dealership in the 400 block of W. Lake at around 12:55 p.m. The dealership reports that the suspect came into the dealership several times in the past to complain. On the above date, the suspect entered the lobby and became angry and loud. The suspect was served with a tres-

Jan. 27 Victim #1 advised that a juvenile suspect was arguing with the victim in the 100 block of Linden at around 12:50 p.m. The suspect punched the victim in the arm and broke a door. Victim #2 attempted to intervene when he was battered by the suspect. Neither party wished to pursue the matter criminally. The father of the juvenile suspect responded to the residence and took custody of the suspect.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia

Jan. 31 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Antonio R. Shanklin, 26, of Chicago, the driver of the vehicle, was found to be driving while license revoked. Shanklin was arrested and transported to the police station where police said it was discovered that he was in possession of a controlled substance, suspected cocaine. Shanklin was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, driving while license revoked and speeding. According to police, Darious A. Lofton, 27, of Calumet City, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. He was issued a citation.

was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, no insurance and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near southbound West Avenue and Second Street at around 5:28 p.m.

Jacoby Gipson, 19, of Maywood, was charged with possession of cannabis, speeding and no insurance, subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Roosevelt at around 12:03 p.m.

Nikki Pamintuan, 24, of Glendale Heights, and Francis Pestano, 24, of Hoffman Estates, were issued citations by police for possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near York at I-290 at around 4:11 p.m.

Police said Pestano was additionally cited for possession of cannabis.

Jan. 28 Alexander J. Weiger, 23, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation by police for possession of cannabis in the 100 block of E. First St. at around 10:27 a.m. Police said Weiger was observed holding a cannabis blunt to his mouth in the parking lot of a convenience store in the above location. According to police, Weiger handed the cannabis to officers upon request and also handed over an additional container of cannabis that was located in his vehicle.

Jan. 27 Oscar Gamez, 20, of Addison, was charged with possession of cannabis following a traffic stop near Glade and North at around 4:41 p.m.

Police said Gamez was a passenger in the vehicle that was stopped.

Ronaldo Perez, 18, of Addison, was charged with possession of cannabis in the 100 block of N. Palmer Drive at around 9:16 p.m. Police said that while on foot patrol, an officer observed Perez smoking a cannabis cigarette while in the pedestrian walkway on the south side of a pharmacy in the above location.

Amika Schafer, 19, of Chicago was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and no insurance, and Brandon Rosario, 20, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and York at around 6:29 p.m. Police said officers located cannabis roaches and a cannabis grinder inside the vehicle.

The staff at a hospital in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill notified officers at around 12:38 p.m. that they suspected illegal drug use by a suspect while she was an admitted patient at the hospital. Hospital security recovered syringes and suspected heroin from the suspect’s personal belongings. The items were collected for evidence. Charges are pending the results of laboratory analysis.

Jan. 26 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and West at around 12:01 a.m., a reporting officer smelled a strong odor of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle. A juvenile suspect was found to be in possession of cannabis. The suspect was charged with possession of cannabis, no insurance and improper lighting.

Suspicious circumstances

Jan. 28 A victim told police at around 7:52 p.m. that he is the owner/landlord of a property in the 200 block of N. Hampshire. He went to the property on the above date to advise his tenants that the building has been sold and they would need to vacate. A suspect became upset and told the property owner that “it would be a shame” if there was a fire at the house.

The victim is concerned that the suspect may damage the property prior to vacating. An officer spoke to the suspect, who denied any such statement.

Jan. 21 The mother of a complainant in the 600 block of Fairfield Avenue told police at around 6:32 p.m. that while her daughter was walking

home from a friend’s house, a gray 4-door sedan occupied by two males drove by asking, “Hey girl can I have your number?” The victim related she had seen the vehicle an hour before the incident parked at a corner near Sunnyside and Montrose Avenues. A reporting officer checked the area with no results.

The suspect is described as a white male with brown, curly hair wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Feb. 1 Judith Boyd, 21, of Chicago, was charged with felony retail theft, and Demetri Brookins, 25, of Chicago, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis and driving while license suspended at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 12:08 p.m. Police said that subsequent to the report of a retail theft at the store, Boyd and Brookins left the scene prior to the reporting officer’s arrival. According to police, they were both located in Downers Grove and taken in to custody. Police said a search of their vehicle yielded merchandise from the store at the above location, as well as from a store in Lombard, while cannabis and Ecstasy also were located.

Dec. 8, 2016-Jan. 31 A complainant from an auto dealership in the 300 block of W. Grand Ave. told police he was contacted by victim who advised that her vehicle, which she surrendered to the dealership, was not returned to the finance company for forfeiture. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen.

Jan. 29 A taxi driver in the 600 block of N. Howard told police at around 3:44 a.m. that he picked up a suspect in front of a hotel in Rosemont described as a black male, around 6-foot tall, skinny, with short curly dreads, a goatee and a mustache, wearing a black jacket with the hood up and blue jeans. The passenger could not give an exact address in Elmhurst and directed the taxi driver to N. Howard, which is a dead end. The suspect stated he had to go inside for money. He then exited the taxi northwest through Crestview Park.

Jan. 28 Cameron McKinney, 19, of Elmhurst, was charged with felony theft at a food store/pharmacy in the 900 block of S. York at around 12:27 a.m. Police said officers responded to the report of an unwanted subject at the above location. While en route, McKinney was located outside, and admitted to taking two bottles of alcohol from a victim without paying, according to police.

Sandburg principal, parent respond to letter

Student-led conferences work well for many; parents delighted

On the Viewpoint page of the January 26, 2017, issue of the Elmhurst Independent, a communiqué from two parents whose children attend Sandburg Middle School was printed. In the letter, the parents were appealing for the school to return to the parent-teacher conference system that has existed for many years rather than the new direction of student-led conferences. But many other parents at Sandburg really like the new format and support continuing it.

“This [concept of student-led conferences] came about when I was a

principal at a school in St. Charles,” said Sandburg Principal Linda Fährenbacher. “I approached the [Sandburg] PTA about it and most liked it and agreed to try it.”

The program was explored following a recent quarterly breakfast held to recognize those on the honor roll.

Sandburg parent Karen Stezowski noticed that 78% of Sandburg students were entitled to go to that breakfast.

“First of all, [78%] seems like an awfully high number,” she said.

“Maybe it’s not that challenging to make the honor roll. But even more, the 22% of students who are not attending are completely left out, completely out of the picture. Who’s taking care of those kids? And what incentive does the breakfast provide for underachieving students?

“I find it hard to believe that a child would study harder for the chance to eat a piece of bacon in three months.”

Man praises father who is retiring from post office When I was in Elementary School, I once interviewed my father for a school assignment. When asked why he had chosen a career as a mail carrier, my father gave an answer that I recall to this day; “I enjoy working for the government and serving the public.”

My father, Richard Plotz, is retiring this month after 40 years with the Elmhurst Post Office. In light of this, I wish to commend him on his dedication and humility in serving others while providing for his family - qualities I strive to follow myself.

My father has always taken great pride in his job. He very rarely called in sick and could always be counted on to fill in on other mail routes when the office was shorthanded. He rebounded quickly from several work-related injuries over the years, and I’ve been told of a time he delivered mail in sub-zero temperatures on a day when his boss announced that coming to work was optional. In addition, he has often “gone that extra mile” by looking up the correct address in the phone book when a piece of mail was undeliverable - and by quietly paying for postage-due letters from his own pocket rather than inconveniencing a customer. In fact, my father loved his job so much that he even made up a song about zip codes that he used to sing to my siblings and me when we were little. But to me, the best testament to my father’s service was the “unfair advantage” we siblings had over our peers when selling fundraising items door-to-door. As soon as a resident would see our dad, they’d often say, “Oh hi Dick!” and gladly buy a candy bar, raffle ticket, or whatever

we were selling.

Yes, my father enjoys working for the government and serving the public - and he has spent the past four decades doing so in an exemplary way.

Robert Plotz Reader has more questions for Conroy Re: “Conroy supports PP” (Viewpoint page, Elmhurst Independent, Feb. 2, 2017 issue) I agree with Representative Conroy that women (and men) need “accessible, affordable healthcare.”

Fortunately, we live in a country where quality healthcare is available; affordable is, of course, another question -- and that is true regardless of income for most people.

But the question is, of all the nearly 2 million non-profit organizations in the U.S., why should Planned Parenthood get $540 million in government funding? The American Red Cross doesn’t get federal funding, and they save as many lives, I suspect, as Planned Parenthood. PP should do what every other organization has to do: go out and raise their own money. Congress would be right to defund PP, not only because of their involvement in the abortion industry, but also because they need to operate on the same footing as every other non-profit.

Rep. Conroy states that “it would cost an additional $130 million over the next ten years to care for women with unintended pregnancies...”

That’s $13 million per year, which is far less than $540 million given to PP! Surely there are more cost-effective ways to promote women’s (and men’s) health.

“We began by looking at our School Improvement Plan, something every school in District 205 has,” Fährenbacher said. “It defines the major emphasis at each school.

At Sandburg, it’s Setting Goals, and Student Engagement and Assessment. Those are our two big areas.

So we had to look at how we were going to do that.”

The student-led conference program allows kids to set their own goals, then reflect on those goals at the end of the quarter. At that time, they can tweak the goals to address their strengths and weaknesses, as well as recognize what learning styles are or are not working.

“The Honor Roll Breakfast was changed to the Fresh Start Breakfast so it included all students,” said Fährenbacher. “The idea was that all students get a fresh start at the beginning of the quarter. The past didn’t matter, it’s a fresh start to move forward from now on.”

“I was one [parent] who stepped forward about that,” said Stezowski.

“If 78% of students get on the honor roll, then how big of an achievement is it? Plus, it seems that the other 22% had no chance. As a PTA member, I feel we parents and teachers are there for all kids, not just the smart ones or lucky ones. I felt the Honor Roll Breakfast was doing more damage to the 22% than it was helping the 78% who were able to attend.

“To me, that’s why the Honor Roll breakfast is not an incentive.”

The word for it is triangulation — it defines a connection between the parent, the teacher and the student, based on the child’s own goals. Everyone is on the same page.

“This was our first time,” Fährenbacher said. “Kids could talk about themselves and where they were as a learner. As we taught it, we created a learning-centered culture. All people in the building are learning — the students as well as the adults.”

Every year, the schools are charged with the task of creating action plans for school improvements.

“A great deal of research backs up the benefits of the program,” Fähren-

bacher said. “I saw it in St. Charles, where students were able to say ‘This is how I am, this is how I learn and this is what I need help with.’”

“Now my son doesn’t want to go back to the old way,” Stezowski said.

“He asked, ‘do they do this at the high school?’ Because if they don’t, he says he doesn’t want to go. Kids feel like stakeholders in their own education and their future [with student-led conferences].”

Stezowski said what made it so important to her was seeing drastic positive changes in her 13-year-old son, who seemed mostly interested only in video games.

“I admit it, my son was always the kind of kid who did the bare minimum to get by,” she said. “I couldn’t believe what he said after participating in the student-led conferences.

He said, ‘I realized for the first time that it’s MY education.’ It’s made such an impact.”

Students see themselves as partners in their education, whereas before, they felt left out.

The research behind it is solid.

John Hattie, an educator from the University of Auckland, has published a book about it after reviewing hundreds of studies and performing a “mega-analysis” to come up with the effect side of it, according to Fährenbacher.

Hattie’s research talked about the value of what he called ‘self-reporting grades.’ That means a young person understands his or her grade and can demonstrate it in the student-led conference, which is focused on achievement and goal-setting.

“Sure, grades are a part of it, but looking at it in this fashion shows that learning is the main focus,” Fährenbacher said. “We look at how we can get kids motivated. We want them to learn for the sake of learning, to encourage them to be learners.”

So Sandburg had the student-led conferences in October of 2016 after which, Fährenbacher received a lot of positive feedback.

“We set up computers in the room for parents to use. We added five more minutes to the conference so

each person had a 15-minute conference, then there was time at the end for parents who have a concern. We can document that and get it back to teachers if necessary. Kids were able to report on their own along with their teacher, rather than have their teacher do it without the child’s input.”

“I have a good friend who was a little negative about [student-led conferences] at first,” Stezowski said. “She was used to the old way, five minutes with the teacher. But she has since evolved and now says she finally realized meeting with the teacher wasn’t enough. Because it’s not about the teacher, it’s about the student.”

Many people throughout the community are familiar with Stezowski because she works at the Elmhurst Public Library so she was able to gather a great deal of public feedback anecdotally. Asked what objections she was hearing, she felt that some people just don’t like change.

“Of all the people I talked to or that I heard from, just three people were dissatisfied,” she said. “And when I looked at it, one was because of the goals the student set. The student’s goal was, ‘I want to get an A in every class,’ which is a poor goal.

They need something more specific they can personally work toward.

“One student’s goal was to have eye contact with every teacher.

What’s frustrating about that is, sure, you may to want person-to-person contact but the truth is, in this day and age, teachers have never been more available. You can reach them through email and teachers are very responsive. They get back to people quickly.”

“The philosophy behind it is simply this — it’s not about the parent, it’s about the student,” Fährenbacher said. “Some people don’t want to hear it.”

For most everyone else, parents have been thrilled, the principal said.

They can’t believe the difference in their son or daughter.

“That is what I tried to explain,” she said. “They’ve got to see big picture.”

Another plus is that attendance at conferences was much better with the new program.

“I cannot tell you the difference, it’s so much better and it’s meaningful,” Stezowski said.

“Just the vibe in the building was so much better,” Fährenbacher said.

“Teachers even noticed how well it worked out and how easy it was to make improvements.”

Economic forecast mirrors last year in most areas Strategist assures other countries not ahead of us, as Trump implies

He only used the “T” name once.

Instead he referred to “the new administration.”

“This new administration brings a lot of uncertainty in terms of an economic forecast, but in reality the outlook has not changed that much since 2016,” said William Strauss, senior economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, who addressed a capacity crowd at a multi-Chamber Economic Outlook Luncheon and Business Expo held on Friday, Feb. 3 at a banquet facility in Downers Grove.

Starting on a high note, Strauss said that the U.S. still remains the largest economy in the world.

“We [meaning the United States] are a 100-foot yacht on a Great Lake.

We are not a speedboat that can change direction quickly,” he said.

“As we move along, the rest of the world reacts to us.”

Strauss assured the U.S. is still outperforming all other countries in the world including Japan, the U.K., the European Union, China and Brazil.

“The Fed expects PCE [Personal Consumption Expenditures] inflation will be around 2% over the next three years,” he said. “That seems bleak but in terms of the rest of the world, believe me, we are the envy of other countries. We are doing well. The U.S. still has 25% of the world manufacturing output.

“So when Trump says all other countries are kicking us, well, that’s simply not true.”

Strauss said a recent survey indicated that optimism in our country is strong.

“But optimism doesn’t generate growth,” he said.

How fast can our economy grow?

“We’ve had 2% economic growth since the middle of 2009,” he said.

“Can we grow [more]? Yes, but the question is, can we maintain it?”

Strauss shared a couple of reasons it is difficult to continue economic growth, the first being the labor force, which has only grown by .8% in the past year. Can we stimulate more? Strauss says yes, but there is more to consider than just jobs.

“The rate of decline in the labor force is due in part to retiring seniors,” he said. “As we know, the Baby Boomers are retiring every day and will continue over the next several years.”

The second reason it is difficult to maintain growth is because productivity, which has grown 1% - 1.25% in the past year, is driven by proficiency and efficiency.

Companies are putting less money into replacing equipment, making do with what they have for a few more years, according to Strauss.

New technology has allowed businesses to reduce their inventory levels because of the ability to move product more quickly to customers.

“Customers can get things on demand now,” he said. “They can download things instantly and that eliminates the need for employees whose job it was to pack things up to mail.”

The U.S. also has a more skilled workforce, but to Strauss, that may actually be a problem, rather than an asset.

“My biggest concern now is having the workers with the right skills for what we need in the future,” he said.

His worry is that a worker with “old” skills may be expected to work on new machinery or technology that he or she is unfamiliar with; or vice versa, a person with the latest skills may be forced to work with an older piece of equipment. These people may be forced to perform in less than optimum circumstances just to hold their jobs.

“To reach 3% means almost doubling the growth rate. That may be achievable for a year or two, but for years on end, it will be much more difficult.”

Strauss said manufacturing output is anticipated to rise 2%-2.25% instead of remaining flat.

“We have concluded 8 1/2 years of growth or 120 months of consecutive growth, which is the second longest expansion in history,” he said. “But that doesn’t mean there’s no risk of recession. But risk has fallen off in the last few months.”

Strauss added that the path of the current recovery is restrained compared to past recession recovery cycles.

There was a huge change in the labor force in the 1970s as the Baby Boomers came of age to join the workforce, he noted. Women created a surge in the 1970s as they joined the workforce in large numbers never witnessed before in the country.

Employment has increased by more than 2.3 million jobs over the past 12 months. That’s fantastic, compared to just over a million, which is on trend. In the recession, we lost about 9 million jobs, he said.

“Now nine years later, we should

The Feds are not increasing interest rates at this time, but may have as much as a 3/4 percent raise by the end of 2019. Interest rates are expected to increase as follows, according to Strauss: 2017 - 1.1% to 1.6% 2018 - 1.9% to 2.6% 2019 - 2.4% to 3.3%.

He mentioned that some were concerned that student debt is in the trillions of dollars at this time, but Strauss doesn’t see that as something to worry about.

“Sometimes really high debt means people are obtaining advanced degrees,” he said, “and that is a good thing for the future.”

Strauss concluded by saying he was looking forward to the challenges of the upcoming year and that he was anxious to come back in 2018 to see how his forecast panned out.

Bad news Bears?

New law in Illinois may deter free agents from signing with Chicago

Bad news for the Bears. And the City of Chicago for that matter if Illinois Senate Bill 12 SA #2 should pass.

Currently before the Illinois state legislature is a bill that would change the Workers Compensation Act toward its coverage of pro athletes. In the past, the pros received a wage differential amount, but this new bill would eliminate them after the athlete turns age 35.

The law currently pays for the player’s natural life, which is determined to be 67 years. Supporters of the bill claim players rarely continue past the age of 35; paying them through age 67 due to injury is costly and unfair.

According to a report from ESPN, DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, has told free agents that if the bill passes, they should not sign with the Chicago Bears.

“Think about it,” Smith said on the air

with the Spiegel & Parkins Show on 670 The Score radio station in Chicago. “If you are a free-agent player and you have an opportunity to go play somewhere else where you can get lifetime medical for the injury you are going to have, isn’t a smarter financial decision to go to a team where a bill like this hasn’t passed?”

radio, the Bears responded: “We join the four other major professional Chicago teams in monitoring and supporting changes to the system that protect athletes’ rights under the workers’ compensation system while acknowledging athletes are not competing professionally until age 67.

Nothing in the wage differential language under consideration impacts the right for any athlete to receive just compensation for partial or permanent injury, medical benefits or to file a claim itself.”

Location, financing key for indoor sports facility

Elmhurst College might be a partner along with the City and the Park District in a possible indoor sports center.

John Quigley, an alumnus of the college and president and CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce,

mentioned the possibility at a meeting of the Development, Planning and Zoning (DPZ) Committee. He noted that he was not speaking for the college, but said he was aware of discussions about what use there might be for the land owned by the college located adjacent to the railroad tracks.

Mayor Steve Morley commented that available land was a big question to consider because there was relatively little open space in Elmhurst.

Morley, who does not usually attend DPZ meetings, stated that a portion

of Berens Park could be another possibility.

Somewhere on the north side of the City around Walnut St. was another option, but, the mayor noted, the price for land in that area would be at a premium.

He added that a source of financing could be funds from the recently-created Tax Increment Financing (TIF) #5.

Alderman Michael Honquest (6th Ward), a member of the DPZ Committee, mentioned the possibility of redoing the Wagner Center.

Ald. Scott Levin, chairman of the DPZ Committee, said he was interested in going on with the discussion at another DPZ meeting. He wanted more information about what the Illinois Finance Authority might provide in revenue bonds.

The topic of a possible indoor sports facility has been discussed at previous DPZ meetings.

Levin said that a key question was what type of indoor sports facility would draw people to Elmhurst?

What kind of facility might bring sports teams from other locations in

the west suburban area? And, could it be a profitable venture which would provide a revenue source for the City? There are different types of designs and sizes of indoor sports facilities, he noted.

Michael Kopp, assistant city manager, said he visited two other suburban indoor sports locations to gather more information: a Bo Jackson Dome in Lockport and a sports facility in Woodridge. He said that the City may want to consider a joint venture with the Elmhurst Park District.

Former Mayor Thomas D. Marcucci was well-known for carrying around a clipping in his wallet that appeared in the Chicago Tribune just before he was elected. It roughly said, “Will the last person to leave Elmhurst please turn out the lights?”

It motivated Marcucci to prove them wrong and dedicate a lot of energy and effort into revitalizing downtown. If it ever came up in conversation, he was quick to pull out that clipping.

Perhaps Mayor Steve Morley will carry something in his wallet now. It was at this year’s State of the City address held at Community Bank of Elmhurst on Tuesday, January 10 that he proudly pulled out a recent copy of Crain’s Chicago Business, showing a story that listed Elmhurst as the second best place in the Chicago suburban area to purchase a home.

“Did you see this in Crain’s Chicago Business?” Morley said that morning, as he held up the paper, open to the page. “We’re the second highest on a list of the best places to buy a home in the suburbs!”

It was just one part of his State of the City address, so he couldn’t dwell on it too long, but he was clearly beaming at the recognition.

After studying a list of 77 neighborhoods in Chicago and more than 200 suburban communities, Crain’s

narrowed the list down to 16 — eight suburbs and eight Chicago neighborhoods. The criteria for their decision was based on the quality of schools, transportation availability and crime rates. The report pointed out that while school quality and crime rates tend to rise and fall, transportation is steadily getting more and more difficult in the City as well as suburbs.

It was also noted that in some parts of the region, the price of homes has been stagnant for the past ten years or more, which tends to undermine the idea of a residence being a long-term investment.

In most of the locations covered in the report, Crain’s said home buyers are still paying less than they were a decade ago.

Other criteria for the report included teachers’ salaries, class sizes and test scores; crime rates; and racial diversity. City neighborhoods competed only with one another, not with suburbs, and vice versa.

The report indicated the median sale price of a home in Elmhurst is $415,000, a change of 9.7% since Jan. 1, 2016. Crain’s noted that the wave of new construction continues to revitalize the community and build up the housing options available.

Ahead of Elmhurst on the list was Hinsdale. Following were Oak Park, Lake Bluff, Riverside, Buffalo Grove, Wilmette, Palos Hills, Bolingbrook and Skokie.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off March 4

The action returns to Spring Road on Saturday, Mar. 4 when the 21st annual Elmhurst St. Patrick’s Day Parade will begin at 12 noon. The parade steps off from the intersection of Wilson Street and Spring Roads and continues north to the railroad tracks just before St. Charles Road in Elmhurst.

According to a message from John R. Quigley, President & CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry, who serves on the Veterans

Commission Parade Committee, Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley is slated to be this year’s Grand Marshal.

This year, there is a new way to attend the parade safely, even if you’ve had some green beer along the way.

The Explore Elmhurst Express Trolley to and from the parade will offer six different trolley stops from 9:3011 a.m and after the parade beginning at 5:30 p.m. (Trolley service stops during the parade.)

It’s always a great day with lots of music, floats, Scout troops, military units, businesses, clubs, organizations, neighborhoods and lots of people dressed in green — in the parade and among the spectators! If you don’t take the trolley, come out early to find a good parking spot and enjoy the festivities.

Road and Salt Creek. The park district manages the Great Western Prairie with assistance from several volunteers. David Price, the park district’s chief horticulturalist, gave the presentation to the board. Price noted that the Illinois Prairie Path occupies the right of way of the former Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad (CA&E), which was abandoned in 1961. The Great Western Prairie is bordered by two former railroads.

The prairie’s north border—near Randolph Avenue—is near the former bed of the Chicago Great Western Railroad. Price said that twothirds of land in Illinois used to be prairie. According to Price, only onetenth of 1 percent of the state’s land was prairie. Most of that prairie land, he said, was located in cemeteries and railroad remnants.

Price said the effort to preserve the Great Western Prairie took hold in the 1970s, when over 200 trees were cleared from the area. He said the first controlled burn at the prairie took place around 1977. The controlled burns help to control invasive plants.

Price told the board that the Great Western Prairie is home to 12 different species of grasses and several types of wildflowers. He said the

land is also a habitat for a multitude of mammals, reptiles, birds and insects.

Price said the park district’s comprehensive plan, which will be updated in 2017, calls for the district to be stewards of the land. The district and volunteers help to preserve the Great Western Prairie by regularly cutting brush, removing invasive plants, clearing litter and holding controlled burns.

The board voted unanimously during the Jan. 30 meeting to approve a reimbursement ordinance related to the district’s recent purchases of three parcels of land. Elmhurst Park District Executive Director Jim Rogers noted that the board recently authorized the three purchases, which amounted to a total of nearly $2.5 million. He said the district plans to use cash on hand to pay for the purchases and use some type of financing instrument to pay the purchases off over the long term.

In its meeting of Sept. 12, 2016, the board authorized the purchase of a parcel of land at 135 Robert T. Palmer Drive for about $1.8 million.

In its meeting on Oct. 11, 2016, the board approved the purchase of the property at 447 Armitage Ave., for $292,500. The board approved a

$415,000 purchase of property at 207 N. Hampshire Ave., at its last meeting on Jan. 17.

The closing for the property on Armitage Avenue was held in December 2016. The closing for the other two properties will take place in March and April of 2017.

According to information provided by the park district, the total planned to be expended for the three purchases is $2,457,500. The reimbursement ordinance calls for $2.5 million to be reimbursed. The ordinance, however, does not obligate the district to use a financing instrument to pay for the reimbursement, nor does it lock the district into spending $2.5 million on the properties.

The amount of any future financing instrument could also include additional money for development of the properties, additional purchases, capital expenditures and demolition costs.

Rogers said the reimbursement ordinance was prepared with the advice from the district’s legal counsel, as well as its bond counsel.

The park district board will hold its next meeting on Feb. 13. That meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at The Hub at Berens Park, 493 N. Oaklawn Ave.

and landscape designer Marion Mahony Griffin moved from Chicago to Australia, she fell in love with the beautiful forms and exotic colors of the natural environment.

In response, she created a series of tall botanical drawings of trees made with Japanese inks on colored silk, which she called “Forest Portraits.”

Two of these rare portraits are on display in the Elmhurst History Museum’s current exhibit, In Her Own Right: Marion Mahony Griffin, which is open through Sunday, March 12.

On the evening of Friday, Jan. 27, members of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI) gathered in the elegant Drake Oak Brook, where they enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as well as a pasta bar, while offering a salute to this

year’s award recipients. It was the 98th Annual Award Gala for the Chamber, which is anticipating its 100th year on the horizon.

Among the award recipients was James Sanchez of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage who was named Ambassador of the Year. It is Sanchez’s first year with the Chamber.

“It is unusual that a person in his first year with the Chamber would receive an award like Ambassador of the Year,” said ECCI president and CEO John R. Quigley, “but James did an outstanding job as an Ambassador. making him the clear choice for the group’s highest honor. He is definitely a young go-getter.”

The entire family was on hand to be recognized, including Vito and Marianna Moreci, who own the establishment, and their children Pasquale and Rosalia who are following in their footsteps.

Elmhurst Fire Chief Thomas Freeman said the dresses and fabrics inside the store provided an inordinate amount of combustibles, which only continued to feed the flames all day and long into the night.

The VIP Occasions building looks strange after the fire that reduced the bridal and formalwear store to a blackened shell with piles of debris everywhere. Estimated damage has not been assessed as of press time.

Three IC Catholic Prep wrestlers won regional titles at the recent Class 1A Walther Christian regional in Melrose Park.

As a team, the Knights placed fifth at the recent Class 1A Walther Christian regional in Melrose Park. IC Catholic Prep finished with 77 points.

IC Catholic Prep standout Joey Bianchini won the 113-pound regional title. He moved to 31-1 with a pinfall win in 28 seconds in the championship match.

Victor Vargas won the 220-pound regional title. He’s now 32-8. He was a 6-2 winner in the championship match.

David Vargas also won the 285-pound title. Vargas won the title match in 5:43 and is now 23-11.

Frank Jaeger took second at 126 pounds and advanced to the next round. Jaeger is 18-18 this season.

Joe Scott was fourth at 160 pounds and did not advance.

York wrestling The York wrestling team recently competed in the Class 3A Leyden regional. York finished sixth with 47.5 points.

Austin Hoffmann advanced to sectional. He finished third at 145 pounds and will bring a 32-10 record into the sectional.

Justin Miramontes also advanced to the sectional round. Miramontes took second at 285 pounds and has 18 wins on the season.

York’s Mapes chooses Augustana

Will continue lacrosse career at the Rock Island school

The more York senior Pierceson Mapes learned about Rock Island-based Augustana College the more impressed he became.

And Mapes recently put his feelings on paper by signing his letter of intent to play men’s lacrosse at Augustana.

“When I was originally going through the college selection process I narrowed it down to wanting to go to a smaller school that had a good support system and it had to be a place that wasn’t too far from home,” he said. “Augustana fit all the qualifications. I visited the school and immediately fell in love with the campus. I kept looking into the college and I put more and more check marks on my list.

Junior year I decided that’s where I wanted to go. I was still looking at

other schools, but my decision never changed.”

Mapes also came away highly impressed with the Augustana lacrosse program.

“I like the coach a lot,” he said.

“I actually met his dad at a lacrosse tournament before I met him. Coach (Dan Torie) is a great man. I love everything about him. I love his coaching philosophy mainly because he told me he wants to see people fight for spots every day in practice. So there’s a possibility of starting as a freshman there. He wants to see the fight and fire in his players. That meant a lot to me.”

Mapes said he’s planning on studying biology with a minor in psychology.

The York senior first became involved by attending a couple lacrosse clinics at the end of the fourth grade before the Elmhurst

Lacrosse program had started.

“Back then there was no Elmhurst lacrosse,” said Mapes. “There was a camp called Lacrosse America I went to.”

And his developing interest in the sport led to Mapes joining Elmhurst Lacrosse—a place he’s been since the organization’s beginning.

Mapes praised the efforts of Elmhurst Lacrosse founders Neil Vandenberg, Jessica Gatti, Mike Seigenthaler and his mother, Mariann Mapes. Pierceson Mapes’ first Elmhurst Lacrosse team was coached by his dad, Jay, and Vandenberg.

“There are some very incredible people with Elmhurst Lacrosse who changed my life,” he said. “I played on that very first team and played until I was not able to anymore. I love lacrosse. The best thing about it is it’s very free-flowing. It’s not like baseball or football where

you might play for 25 seconds and then it’s not your turn. Lacrosse is very fast-paced. It’s also a forgiving sport. It’s a sport where you get a chance to score a goal after you mess something up. You have the ability to get the ball back if you make a bad pass.”

Mapes, who also plays with the True Lacrosse club organization, is a defender for York coach Don Canfield’s team—the same position he was recruited for at Augustana. To say the least, Mapes is looking forward to the upcoming York season.

“This last year was the best year we’ve had,” he said. “The program keeps going up and up. Coach Canfield and the other coaches have really brought the program up to where it is. I don’t think it would be possible without them. Every day I’m counting down the days until the season starts.”

York boys basketball team defeats Glenbard West Dukes compete in Batavia Night of Hoops event

The York boys basketball team snapped a recent losing streak with a 47-35 West Suburban Conference Silver Division victory against Glenbard West.

York led 9-5 after the first quarter and by 13 at halftime. York held Glenbard West to nine points in the first half. York held a 10-9 edge in

the third quarter and was outscored 17-15 in the fourth quarter. Glenabrd West scored 18 points in the first three quarters of the game.

Jordan Gray led the Dukes with 14 points, while Erik Cohn had 13 points. Angelo Martucci chipped in nine points.

Gray and Cohn each had six rebounds. Nick Trapani scored two points and had three assists and five rebounds to go with two steals. Martucci and Sam Walsh each had two steals.

York shot 46.7 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the freethrow line (15-for-21). Cohn made

3 of 5 three-point attempts. John Milling came off the bench to sink a 3-pointer.

Glenbard West was held to 28.6 percent shooting in the game.

The Dukes also dropped a 4839 non-conference game to Benet Academy at the Batavia Night of Hoops event.

York trailed 11-7 after the first quarter and 24-12 at halftime. Benet outscored York 19-11 in the third quarter and the Dukes outscored their opponents 16-5 in the fourth quarter.

Cohn led the Dukes with 11 points. Walsh added 10 points.

Trapani and Henry Judge each had five points. Walsh pulled in four rebounds. Cohn and Walsh each had two steals.

York shot 40 percent from the field. Judge and Trapani each made a 3-pointer. York committed 18 turnovers in the game.

The loss to Benet put York at 10-12 overall. The victory against Glenbard West moved the Dukes to 2-5 in WSC Silver play.

Through 22 games, Gray was leading the team in scoring at 13.7 points per game. Trapani was averaging 10.0 points, while Cohn was at 9.1 points, Martucci at 7.0 points

and Nick Kosich at 6.6 points per game. Gray was leading the team in rebounding at 5.8 per game, while Cohn was at 3.7 per game. Kosich was tops in assists with 81 (1.05 assist-to-turnover ration) and in steals with 35. Trapani had 31 steals.

Trapani was the team leader in 3-pointers made with 54 (40.3 percent). Martucci was tops in free throws with 70 of 89 made (78.7 percent).

York was shooting 47.1 percent as a team, while holding opponents to 40.3 percent from the field. York has held 10 opponents to under 50 points per game.

Timothy Christian, York cheerleading teams make state finals Trojans take eighth in small-team division; Dukes 10th in co-ed

Both the York and Timothy Christian competitive cheerleading teams fared well at the recent IHSA state meet held in Bloomington.

Both teams advanced to their respective final-round competitions held at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.

Timothy Christian finished 10th in the preliminary round of the smallteam division, grabbing the last spot in the finals. The Trojans moved up two places in the final standings, finishing in eighth place.

Timothy recorded a 73.64 in the preliminary round and moved its score up to 75.06 in the finals.

This was Timothy’s 10th appearance in the state meet. The Trojans

took second in the state in the smallteam division in 2010 and 2012. Timothy has made seven appearances in the small-team division, two in the medium-team division and one in the co-ed division. The Trojans also have three sectional titles to their credit.

Timothy was third in the sectional this year. The Trojans are coached by Aaron Armstrong.

York took ninth in the preliminary round of the co-ed division at state, earning a finals berth. The Dukes ended up in 10th place overall in the co-ed division.

York scored an 83.39 in the preliminary round and had an 82.78 in the finals.

York girls basketball The York girls basketball team dropped a pair of recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division contests to Glenbard West and Oak Park-River Forest.

In a 34-28 loss to Glenbard West, York trailed 10-9 after the first quarter and 13-11 at halftime. Glenbard West outscored York 11-7 in the third quarter and each team scored 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Danielle Dennis led the Dukes with 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting.

She also had seven rebounds and shot 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.

Jaclyn Saco and Kathleen Levins each had four points. Levins pulled in six rebounds. Caylin Rufus had four rebounds, while Hailey Walker had three steals.

In a 41-40 loss to Oak Park-River Forest, York led 15-9 after the first quarter and 20-17 at halftime. But the Huskies outscored York 14-4 in the third quarter.

York did mount a comeback and outscored OPRF 16-10 in the fourth quarter.

Dennis led the Dukes with 15 points and five rebounds. Rufus had seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Madison Park had six points, while Saco had two steals.

York was 13-11 overall after the OPRF game and 4-7 in WSC Silver action. York recently was awarded the No. 9 seed in the upcoming Class 4A Glenbard West sectional.

York girls bowling team qualifies for sectionals Dukes finish third at Leyden and WSC Head Pin tournaments

It’s on to the sectional round for the York girls bowling team.

The Dukes finished fourth at the recent Hinsdale Central regional and secured the fourth and final team-qualifying spot. The regional was held at Suburbanite Bowl in Westmont.

York ended with a total pinfall of 5046.

Jessica Cwik led the way with a 1,055 series. Lauren Gould was right behind her at 1,048, while Jenny Diamond had a 1,041 series. Krystyna Panek, a sophomore, had a 1,015, while Lauren Steck had an 887.

Cwik finished eighth individually and Gould was ninth. Diamond took 11th and Panek was 15th.

York had games of 822, 795 and 875 in the first session and then games of 884, 815 and 855 in the final session.

In earlier action, the Dukes fared well in a pair of regular-season-concluding tournaments.

York finished third at the Leyden Eagles Bowling Invitational. The

Dukes had a 5,133 pinfall total. York bowled games of 847, 786 and 901 in the first session and returned for games of 926, 863 and 810.

Cwik finished sixth individually with a 1,159 series. She had games of 181, 177 and 200 for a 588 in the first session and then finished with games of 205, 216 and 180 for an outstanding 601 series in the finale. Her 216 was 12th in the tournament.

Gould was 16th with a 1,064. She had a 234 in her third game and also had a 178. She finished with a 573 series for her first three games. Gould’s 234 ranked fifth in the tournament.

Diamond finished 18th with a 1,049 series. Her final series included games of 222, 174 and 185 (581 series). Diamond’s 222 tied for ninth place.

Steck had a 982 and finished 31st.

She had high games of 194 and 171.

Panek had a high game of 178.

York also was third in the West Suburban Conference Head Pin Tournament. The Dukes finished with a 5,012 pinfall, which included a 2531 series in the first three games and a 2,481 series in the final three.

Cwik was third in the tournament with an 1,141 series (190.2 average).

She had games of 191, 168, 193, 212, 211 and 166.

Timothy Christian girls basketball team finishes regular season Trojans record recent wins over Ridgewood and Fenton

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team concluded the regular season by splitting four games.

The Trojans recorded wins over Ridgewood and Fenton and lost to Guerin Prep and Walther Christian.

The split left Timothy at 12-14 overall heading into the start of the postseason this week.

The Trojans finished 5-7 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

Timothy coach Michele Strube was pleased with how her team competed against Ridgewood.

“Ridgewood played a great game.

They played us pretty tough,” she said. “We had a few less turnovers.

We didn’t play as well as we could have and Ridgewood shot the ball well.”

Allison Zeilstra hit key free throws at the end of the game, while Jordyn Strube also was a key performer, along with Olivia Hoekstra. Strube scored 15 of her points in the second half, while Hoekstra had 10 points (5 in the fourth quarter) and 11 rebounds.

“Jordyn had a tremendous game and Allison hit some big free throws.

Olivia was fantastic,” said Strube.

“We got down against Ridgewood toward the end and we adjusted and pulled it out. It was a good win against a scrappy team.”

The Trojans struggled in a loss to Guerin Prep in MSC Red play.

“We could not make a thing,” said Strube. “We had 11 points at halftime.

It was a tough game. We had a good rally in the second half. We held them to eight points in both the third and fourth quarters, but we couldn’t get the lead.”

Jordyn Strube had 15 points. Schuringa added 10 points. Timothy shot 70 percent from the free-throw line.

“We let them shoot 32 free throws and they made 21,” said Strube. “And most came in the second half. We couldn’t get the lead and we had to foul.”

In Timothy’s 50-25 MSC crossover win against Fenton, Hoekstra had 11 points, three assists, five rebounds and three steals, while Schuringa had 10 points and two rebounds. Ava Venema had seven points and seven rebounds.

“We shot the ball well and played some man and zone on defense. It was a good team win and a lot of people got to play,” said Strube. “It was a very nice game.”

Strube was particularly impressed with the team’s play in a 48-42 MSC Red loss to Walther Christian.

“We played a fantastic game,” she said. “We played the best game of the entire season. I’m very proud of what our girls did against a very athletic and aggressive Walther team.”

Timothy held Walther to 14 points in the first half and led by nine points at halftime.

“We played a 3-2 zone and packed it in. We weren’t going to let them drive,” said Strube. “They have a good player, a junior guard, and we held her to four points at halftime.

What we did worked for three quarters. She had 10 points going into the fourth quarter. We played three fantastic periods and then they scored 20 in the fourth and that girl scored 14 in the fourth quarter. We also had some costly turnovers and we struggled with our free throws (9-for-26).

We got to the line because we knew Walther would foul a lot. We shot a

lot of free throws, but didn’t make a lot. But overall we played great. It was senior night. It was very energetic and very fun. I’m incredibly proud of the girls.”

Schuringa had 11 points and five rebounds. Hoekstra had 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Tyra Hopson had six points and Venema had six points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots.

“Olivia Schuringa led the way and Olivia Hoekstra had a fantastic game.

She was solid all-around,” said Strube. “When Walther was driving to the basket they altered shots and a lot of that was because of Ava. She did the little things like boxing out and was aggressive with rebounding. This was a good way to go into regionals.”

Timothy opened the postseason earlier this week at Lisle against Chicago Richards.

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team split a pair of non-conference contests recently.

The Trojans dropped a 69-61 non-conference game to Camanche High School out of Iowa at the Fulton shootout in western Illinois.

“Camanche is a very good team.

They were 15-3,” said Timothy

coach Jack LeGrand. “It was a really good back-and-forth game. We played some of our best basketball against them. We extended the lead in the third quarter to 10 points, but in the fourth quarter they put the heat on us and we didn’t handle the ball well.”

Brandon Orange led the Trojans with 20 points and also pulled in an impressive 17 rebounds. Joey Davidson added 12 points and five rebounds. Jonny Strube had 10 points and two rebounds, while Ty Merrick had four points, five rebounds and three assists.

“Ty had a good all-around game,”

said LeGrand. “Three quarters of the way we played very good basketball.”

Timothy rebounded to score a 6047 non-conference win against Westmont.

Davidson poured in 25 points to go with five rebounds and two assists. Orange had 12 points and seven rebounds. Michael Thomas had six assists. Merrick added four points, six rebounds and three assists, while Jimmy Allen had four points, four assists and four rebounds.

“We shared the ball well and had a really good shooting percentage,” said LeGrand. “We finished well. We

shot 50 percent from the field and moved the ball on offense and defensively we made some key stops at key times.”

LeGrand also was impressed with the team’s distribution on offense.

Timothy finished with 17 assists.

Davidson also was lauded for his recent efforts. “Joey played very well,” said LeGrand. “He attacked the basket and finished well. Joey’s doing what we need. He’s scoring pretty well. We got him the ball and he finished.”

Orange was leading the team in scoring at 13.4 points a game with Davidson right behind him at 13.3 per game. Strube was averaging 10.5 points. Orange was averaging 7.7 rebounds per game, while Strube was at 6.2 rebounds. Merrick was averaging 3.9 assists, while Trayvon Williams was averaging 1.2 steals.

Strube was averaging 1.8 blocks per game.

Strube was leading the team in 3-pointers made with 41 and was shooting 43 percent from the 3-point line.

“I like to speak up when something is working,” she said. “Most people come out to complain about something, I come out to tell them when things are good. And I was very honest with them. I said I knew that my kid was very ‘bare minimum,’ but when we got [to the conference], he was a different kid. He sat up straight, he was so proud to be there with his teacher. He was a part of it and was in control. I have never seen that side of him before. I heard that from other parents, too. The kids were so proud, that was the main difference, that the kids were proud and realized it was all about them.

“And the kids don’t want to give it up. They don’t want to go back [to teacher-led conferences].

“I’m sorry for the people who don’t like it, but it’s change. Give it a chance.

One [parent] who had a real problem with it decided not to attend conferences at all. She didn’t even go, she had her child show her the Powerpoint printout when they were home.

“But the magic was in the setting, having all three of us together — the parent, the child, the teacher — together it’s all so meaningful. “ Stezowski shared a quote from her son, William, about the program:

“It showed me that I wasn’t just a grade,” he said. “I felt like an individual, a member of my future. Being able to talk about accomplishments helps you address the deficiencies. (Yes, he used that word!) Without the student, you can’t find out what the problem is. I valued that they cared about my opinion.”

“What a powerful experience it was!” Stezowski said “It’s building on the life skills he will need in the future.

Just making the presentation was using skills I’d never seen in him before — skills he will use for the rest of his life.”

While Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Moyer supports the program very much, currently there is no plan to “take it District-wide.”

“I don’t know of any plans to expand,” said Fährenbacher. “It just fits with Sandburg. It’s how we are and who we want to be. Again, each District 205 school sets its own goals. This just works for us.”

“So the Honor Roll breakfast will remain the Fresh Start event to celebrate everybody and how they have grown and improved,” said Stezowski “It’s all tied in with growth. No matter where you were at the beginning of the quarter, you will always have a new opportunity — a fresh start — to grow.”

A Hope Pack is an opportunity for all abilities and ages to bring support and hope to those affected by cancer.
