Voter registration ends Feb. 20 for General Primary Election Early voting opens March 20

Joseph H. Sobecki, Executive Director of the DuPage County Election Commission, reminds all potential electors within the County of DuPage that Tuesday, February 20, 2018, is the last day to register to vote or to transfer a registration for the upcoming March 20, 2018, General Primary Election at any location other than the Election Commission office in Wheaton.

Any potential voter who resides within DuPage County is encouraged to contact the Election Commission’s Registration Department at (630) 4075600, the TDD number at (630) 4075631, or visit dupageco.org/election.

An individual may check the status of their voter registration on the website by using the “Voter Information Search” and obtain a listing of voter registration locations.

If an individual is not registered or their registration is not up-to-date after the traditional registration has closed, Grace Period Registration and Voting will be available at the Election Commission office beginning Wednesday, February 21, 2018. Individuals registering during the “grace period” will be required to vote at that time.

Online voter registration or transfer of a registration is also available on the Paperless Online Voter Application (POVA) site at ova.elections. il.gov until Sunday, March 4, 2018.

Nybo seeks end to gender wage gap, holds employers accountable To build on the momentum surrounding women’s rights and gender injustice, State Senator Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) has taken action to end the gender wage gap that remains highly prevalent in our society. He enlisted his support as a cosponsor on a recently-filed legislative initiative to fight gender wage disparity in the workplace.

As an actionable solution, Senate Bill 2333, would make it illegal for employers to ask prospective or current employees about their previous wage or salary history.

“It is troubling that we continue to see female employees be paid less than their male counterparts performing the same work; and employers’ inquiries into salary history has proven to be one of the contributing factors,” said Nybo. “Senate Bill 2333 would protect job seekers and employees from being taken advantage of financially or held back from their earning potential. Companies should evaluate prospective employees based on experience and qualifications. If employers know what the role in the organization is worth, they should be willing to pay that amount regardless of someone’s salary history.”

More than ever, various female empowerment groups and protests are rising up to give a voice to survivors of discrimination, harassment and assault, and advocate for gender equality, including the increasingly popular #MeToo Movement, which Nybo and fellow lawmakers participated in at the Capitol on January 31.

With growing support and attention on female rights, Nybo says this is the opportune time to tackle wage injustice once and for all.

“The fight for gender equality is and has been a long battle—one that these strong female rights advocates, supporters and survivors can win,” said Nybo. “I’m inspired by each and every one who is speaking out against gender discrimination; and I want to do the same. The gender wage gap is one of many injustices in the workplace that we can address here at the Capitol.”

Senate Bill 2333, filed by Chief Senate Sponsor Michael Connelly (R-Naperville), amends the Equal Pay Act of 2003 by prohibiting an employer from asking a prospective employee or the previous employer about his/her salary or benefits history. Companies who violate this

rule would receive civil fines. Additionally, it encourages businesses to practice routine evaluation plans to track their pay practices and employees’ salaries, and resolve any existing gender wage disparities within their organization.

ICCP senior earns full scholarship to Dartmouth

Last week, IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) announced that senior Joshua De La Cruz was accepted to Dartmouth College, earning a Full Scholarship through QuestBridge.

College Match Scholarship Recipients are granted admission to one of QuestBridge’s partner colleges with a full, four-year scholarship worth more than $300,000.

AAUW to present ‘Amelia Earhart: American Aviatrix’

Leslie Goddard to perform dramatic portrayal

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Elmhurst Area Branch will host its monthly meeting and program on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library. The program will feature actress and scholar, Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., who will present her dramatic portrayal of Amelia Earhart.

Amelia Earhart was the first woman aviator to cross and subsequently pilot herself across the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, Amelia set numerous speed and altitude records.

Her courageous exploits and charismatic personality made Amelia an international celebrity. She mysteriously disappeared while attempting an around the world flight in June of 1937.

Leslie Goddard holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University specializing in U.S. history and American studies. She also has master’s degrees in both theater and museum studies. A former museum director, she is the author of two books on Chicago history and currently works full-time as a historical interpreter, author, and public speaker.

DMMC issues 2018 Legislative Action Program Priorities include protect local revenue, support residents, provide services

The DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (DMMC) outlined its annual legislative agenda, stressing the importance of maintaining local governance and protecting local revenue for essential community services.

DMMC President and Addison Mayor Rich Veenstra addressed the group’s 33 members, representing more than one million residents, at its annual Legislative Reception & Dinner in advance of the Illinois General Assembly’s spring session, starting later this month.

Veenstra noted that municipalities have endured significant funding cuts amid rising costs during the past several years. In its Fiscal Year 2018 budget, the state reduced traditional local revenue sources for cities and towns throughout Illinois. In DuPage

County alone, those cuts amounted to a loss of $15.8 million.

That includes: a $11.4 million cut in the Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF), or each local government’s share of the state income tax; a $1.4 million cut in personal property replacement tax (PPRT), or revenues to local governments by corporations; and a $2.9 million cut from a new 2 percent sales tax collection fee on local municipalities.

“This year marks a critical year for local governments, not only in DuPage, but across Illinois,” Veenstra said. “The uncertainty and the stress on the state’s budget has resulted in local governments having significantly less revenue to provide essential services to local residents and keep a lid on property taxes.”

Kara Dollaske, York Community High School counselor and assistant girls’ tennis coach was just recognized as “Assistant Coach of the Year” for girls’ tennis by the Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association (IHSTCA). Dollaske has served as an assistant girls’ tennis coach at York for the last six years.

“The 2017 York JV1 team season was a special and historic one,” she said. “While we had many great accolades in terms of our match results, what I am most proud of was how the girls worked together as a team. When I first started coaching tennis at York, we had about 50 girls over 3 levels. Since then we have grown to 112 athletes, which brings a great amount of depth and talent to the York program, and also larger numbers to each team.

“My 20 athletes this season became a cohesive family unit. Every girl contributed her part up and down the line-up and our success was a direct result of girls supporting and challenging each other throughout practices and during meets. Even when court space was tight, my girls didn’t think twice when their practice plan was to go on a long run or cross train in small groups. They embraced my direction and worked hard so that they can set their sights on making the Varsity squad in the future.

“I know that my team’s success isn’t just the direct result of my coaching or their training, but it is an outcome of the strong program that Coach Heimann and my other assistant coaches have built together. Success at the top level always starts with a strong program overall and that is what we work hard to create and cultivate at York.”

Head Coach Tres Heimann said the following about Coach Dollaske: “The one area that sets Coach Dollaske apart from most coaches is her ability to motivate student-athletes. She does not use a ‘one size fits all’ approach. She values relationships and responsibility and reaches every young lady in a unique way. All athletes respond well to her.”

John Peter “Pete” Tullsen, 77 John Peter “Pete” Tullsen, longtime area resident, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in Elmhurst on January 31, 2018, at the age of 77. Beloved husband of the late Nancy Clegg Tullsen; dear father of Barbara Tullsen (Daniel) Hill and John P. (Evan Siegel) Tullsen, Jr.; cherished Grampa Pete (“G.P.”) of Wesley Tullsen Hill and Alaina Elizabeth Hill; adored brother of the late Dr. R. Catherine Cohen; caring brother-in-law of Carolyn (Stephen) Hemman and the late Howard R. Clegg; uncle of devoted nephew Jeffery S. (Rachel) Hemman and niece Suzanne (Jeff) York; and fun-loving grand-uncle to many. Pete was born in Chicago to Jane and Volney Tullsen and raised in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.

He attended Gettysburg College, where he met his late wife of 50 years, and graduated in 1962 with a major in business administration.

He then served two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss, Texas, where he was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant and then received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts. Pete and family moved around the country more than a dozen times, primarily due to job transfers for his career as an executive in labor relations and human resources for several multi-national corporations.

Among his many interests and talents, Pete was a devoted participant and fan of sports, including playing high school football, jogging since the 1970s, and bicycling, among others. He had an insatiable appetite for movies, spy and detective novels, and especially jazz music, which he enthusiastically followed for decades. Known as a warm, fair, and honorable man, Pete had a great sense of humor, was easygoing, and was always enormous fun to be around. He was a dedicated and generous volunteer at a number of organizations that assist people who needed an ally like Pete, including most recently at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.

near York and Brush Hill at around 12:29 a.m., Oscar Suby, 56, of Wood Dale, was found to be in possession of a copper cannabis grinder and a one hitter. Suby was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jan. 26 Dion D. Howard, 42, of Lombard, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 300 block of E. Van Buren at around 3:26 a.m.

Criminal damage

Jan. 30 A complainant at Elmhurst Hospital told police at around 8:11 p.m. that an intoxicated patient became extremely irate and intentionally threw the hospital’s phone on the ground, rendering it inoperable. He reportedly ripped the keyboard and holder from the medical stand, breaking the pull-out board. Complaints will be signed.

Jan. 25 A victim in the 600 block of S. Hillside told police at around 9:29 a.m. that a window to his house was damaged with what appeared to be a B.B. from a B.B. gun.

Jan. 11-Jan. 24 A complainant in the 300 block of N. York told police at around 12:45 p.m. that an unknown suspect damaged the entry door to a basement apartment. The complainant noticed pry marks on the door and a loose lock plate.

The complainant believes the damage occurred within the past two weeks.

Disorderly conduct

Jan. 31 A complainant in the 900 block of N. York told police that a suspect described as a short heavy set black male in his late 30s to early 40s with a moustache, wearing a gray zip-up sweater, dark pants and black shoes entered a store and purchased cigarette blunts. The suspect left and returned a short while later claiming the blunts were broken. The suspect reportedly used foul language, said that he would strike the complainant.

Jan. 29 Police said Daniel A. Eftimoff, 28, of Willow Springs, was observed to be intoxicated in the parking lot in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 10:38 a.m. Eftimoff entered an unlocked vehicle and sat in the back seat, according to police. He was cited for disorderly conduct/public intoxication.

Feb. 1 Chris E. Smith, 22, of Chicago, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, operating a vehicle with suspended registration, and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and York at around 12:21 a.m.

Jan. 31 Juan C. Bautista, 38, of Chicago, was DUI, speeding, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and York at around 11:49 p.m.

Jan. 28 Gilberto Figueroa-Flores, 54, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and disobeying a traffic signal subsequent to a traffic stop near North

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Grand at around 6:18 p.m., Gary Provenzano, 23, of Wood Dale, appeared to have constricted pupils, droopy eyelids, and slurred speech. Provenzano admitted to ingesting a drug, according to police. He was charged with DUI-drugs, improper lane usage and not having a driver’s license on his person.

Isidro Sanchez-Cacho, 44, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of open alcohol, no valid driver’s license, improper lane usage and no insurance near North and Emory at around 3:37 p.m.

Jan. 31 Adrian F. Cebula, 19, of Bloomingdale, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and disobeying a traffic control device near North and York at around 7:58 p.m.

Jan. 31 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Addison and Armitage at around 8:30 p.m., Andrew M. Santilli, 34, of Elmhurst, was found to be in possession of two glass crack pipes and a copper scouring pad. Santilli was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and use of an unsafe tire.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Frontage at around 5:17 a.m., Jose Davila, 29, of Chicago, was found to be in possession of a multicolored glass pipe and a wooden smoking pipe containing burnt cannabis. Davila was cited on scene for possession of cannabis and speeding.

Jan. 29 Police said officers responded to the report of a suspicious vehicle in the 700 block of S. Washington where two suspects parked in a tan minivan exited the vehicle and began walking up and down the street. The suspects were located and could not provide a reason why they were walking around a residential area at night. A search of one of the suspects, Jose L. Mantilla, 45, of Chicago, yielded a glass smoking pipe, police said. Mantilla was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jan. 27 Lance Coppage, 32, of River Forest, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Lake at around 7:39 p.m.

Jan. 29 A complainant in the 400 block of N. Addison told police at around 3:30 a.m. that her surveillance camera picked up movement in her backyard. The image on the footage is blurry, and could not be identified as a person or animal. Officers checked the area with no results.

Jan. 31 A complainant at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police at around 8:06 p.m. that three suspects entered the store and were acting suspiciously. A suspect described as a black male wearing a brown and black, hat, a black jacket and tan pants, possibly named James, was observed reportedly placing items into a large brown bag and quickly exited the store without paying for the items. Two female suspects reportedly exited the store and all three suspects left the area in a gold sedan.

An investigation is pending.

A victim told police at around 7:34 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) used her bank card without her authorization to make an online purchase. The victim has since notified her bank and cancelled the bank card.

Jan. 30-Jan. 31 A victim in the 200 block of N. Myrtle told police that an unknown suspect removed an American flag and wooden flag pole from a flag holder mounted on the front of her house sometime between the above dates.

Jan. 30 Theft was reported in the 600 block of W. Grand at around 2:46 p.m. The complainant told police she purchased a gift set from Amazon. She had it shipped it to Junan Express in the 600 block of W. Grand. Amazon shows the package was delivered to Junan Express and signed for. Junan Express does not show they received the package from Amazon. Amazon advised the complainant to make a police report and they would re-send the package.

Jan. 28 Attempted retail theft was reported at a food store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 1:45 p.m. Police said that while on patrol, an officer observed the suspect exit the carrying two reusable shopping bags. The suspect allegedly began running through the aisles of parked cars and discarded the bags behind a parked car. The area was checked for the suspect with no results. The suspect was described as a white male, 18 years old, around 5-10, 160 pounds with medium length dark brown hair and wearing a green over gray Patagonia fleece, blue jeans and a brown shirt.

Jan. 26 Retail theft was reported at a food store in the 600 block of N. York at around 1:51 p.m. Police said a reporting officer responded for a retail theft in progress where two suspects—one described as a white female in her 30s with blonde hair; the other described as a black male, clean-shaven, around 5-8 and 330 pounds—had fled the scene. The officer viewed surveillance camera footage and observed the female suspect enter the store alone and fill her bags with bottles of champagne.

She then exited the store. When confronted by loss prevention, the female suspect allegedly dropped the stolen merchandise on the ground and left it. The male suspect reportedly exited a van and helped the female get into it. They exited the parking lot southbound on York.

Jan. 25 Police said that subsequent to a complaint of retail theft at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at around 1:18 a.m., the Villa Park Police Department located two suspects near North and Ferndale. Katlynn Cumpek. 25, of Berwyn admitted to committing a retail theft, according to police, who stated that she also was found to be in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia. Carl D. Castleberry, 25, of Joliet, was found to be in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia, according to police.

Cumpek was charged with two counts of retail theft, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of a hypodermic needle and possession of drug paraphernalia. Castleberry was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Retail theft was reported at a food store in the 900 block of S. York at around 1:28 p.m.

Police said that while en route to the store, officers were advised two suspects described as black males—one wearing a black jacket, black hat and tan boots; the other wearing a blue jacket and blue jeans—took three bottles of Johnnie Walker Red Label and left the store.

According to police, security footage showed both suspects enter a tan, 4-door Ford Taurus and exit the parking lot onto Butterfield Road.

Later in the day at around 5:46 p.m. police said the same two suspects were in the store’s liquor department allegedly stealing bottles of alcohol. Police said the suspects were confronted by a store manager as they walked towards the exit door. One of the suspects reportedly removed three 750ml bottles of scotch, and placed them on the ground. Both suspects exited the store and left in the aforementioned Ford Taurus.

Attempted retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at around 7:13 p.m. A victim told police they observed a suspect described as a black male wearing a black winter hat, a black jacket, a black shirt and dark colored pants, take three blue bottles of vodka from the liquor shelf and attempt to conceal them under his jacket. The suspect was confronted, went back to the liquor aisle, placed the three bottles back on the shelf and exited the store.

Jan. 24-Jan. 25 Five incidents of entering a vehicle were reported in the 900-1000 block of Saylor between the above dates. In each incident, the victim reported that someone had entered their unlocked vehicles. Nothing was reported stolen out of any of the vehicles. In the fifth incident, a victim told police that an unknown suspect entered her unlocked vehicle while it was parked in her detached garage. The victim related the trunk was standing open, the contents of the passenger area of her vehicle had been rifled through.

DuPage County releases 2017 opioid statistics The DuPage County Coroner’s Office has completed all suspected opioid related deaths from 2017. The numbers are startling and show that there continues to be a serious problem of addiction and death related to legal and illegal opioids.

Medicaid work requirements for able-bodied, childless adults make sense Helping people when they’re down is admirable.

Helping people who are down learn how to help themselves is both admirable and far more sustainable, financially, in the long term.

Dan McCaleb That’s why the Trump administration’s Columnist, Illinois News recentl decision to Network allow U.S. states to develop workrequirement programs for healthy, childless Medicaid recipients is a smart one. Under the new guidelines, individuals with disabilities and small children, women who are pregnant, and the elderly would be exempt from the work requirements.

Those most in need, then, are not affected.

Kentucky was the first U.S. state to become eligible to impose the mandatory work requirement. Illinois should get in line to become one of the next.

Medicaid is a taxpayer-funded health insurance program that was created in the 1960s to provide coverage for the most at-risk Americans, including those in extreme poverty and people with disabilities who are unable to work. But when Obamacare was enacted in 2010, it expanded Medicaid eligibility to all lower-income Americans in states that opted in. That allowed healthy, childless individuals for whom Medicaid was not initially intended to sign up for the welfare program.

In 2013, Illinois opted in to full Medicaid expansion. Since then, the state’s Medicaid rolls have exploded.

More than one in every four Illinoisans now are covered by taxpayer-funded Medicaid.

And, as can be expected, the costs have soared as well.

During fiscal year 2016, combined federal and state spending for Medicaid in Illinois exceeded $19 billion, an increase of 44 percent since 2012. Illinois’ share is more than $5 billion, and that’s only going to increase as Congress shifts more of the expansion costs to state governments.

A U.S. Senate committee is investigating the rising costs of Medicaid in Illinois and seven other U.S. states that opted into to the expansion.

In a letter to Gov. Bruce Rauner last fall, the committee’s chairman, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin, said Illinois’ Medicaid expansion costs are exceeding initial estimates by 90 percent, nearly double.

“Costs per enrollee are also surging in Illinois, going from $1,867 in 2014 to $5,854 in 2015—a 214 percent single-year increase,” Johnson wrote.

“I am seeking to better understand these rising costs and higher-thanexpected enrollment, especially in states where costs or enrollment are increasing especially quickly.”

Illinois is in no condition to continue absorbing these out-ofcontrol costs. A work requirement would incentivize many healthy Illinoisans who enrolled in Medicaid through Obamacare to look for work.

Some percentage of them would find it and move to privately funded insurance, saving taxpayer money.

Rauner said that he supports work rules for able-bodied Medicaid recipients. But he also said there aren’t enough good jobs in Illinois to support it.

“We don’t have jobs available for everyone, and that’s got to be our priority— because you can force people to work but if there’s not a work opportunity, that’s not going to succeed,” Rauner said in touting reforms to tax and regulatory policies that have stifled Illinois’ jobs creators.

Rauner is correct about Illinois’ lagging jobs situation, but that shouldn’t prevent the state from adopting Medicaid work requirements.

Under Kentucky’s model, healthy adults who want to receive health care benefits would need to complete 80 hours of what that state calls “community engagement” each month to remain eligible. Community engagement can mean actually working in a job, but it also includes continuing education, community service and job training. And, to be clear, the requirement in Kentucky is 80 hours a month—not 40 hours a week, as most full-time jobs require.

Illinois can form its own requirements to best fit the state.

Other federal welfare programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (otherwise known as food stamps), allow for work requirements, although the federal government makes it too easy for states to apply for and receive waivers.

Illinois successfully sought a waiver for its SNAP program in 2018.

Work requirements offer good motivation for childless, able-bodied individuals to learn new skills, enhance their future earning power and become productive members of their communities.

This is a no-brainer.

Rauner should start working on Illinois’ requirements immediately.

Winning the lottery would complicate life

My husband and I aren’t big gamblers. I suppose it stems from the fact that we’ve never really had a large pile of cash we were itching to lose. Plus neither one of us was born the lucky gene. So if you ever see us at a casino, rest assured, we’re there for the buffet.

Still, every so often we buy a lottery ticket – just one for the both of us. We wouldn’t want to be too unrestrained.

We usually purchase our lottery ticket when the jackpot is sky high and the winning prize is somewhere in the mega millions.

What typically happens the morning after we buy the lottery ticket is I go online to check our numbers. And then I tell my husband the bad news.

We didn’t win.

That isn’t always the case. We did win $4 once. You should have seen our happy dance that day.

Not winning the lottery doesn’t stop us from dreaming about what we’d do if we did win. Except when it comes to my husband and me, our dreams – and our definition of winning – vary significantly.

He dreams of winning the lottery.

Literally winning the lottery. He even does the numbers in his head: how ever many hundreds of millions in the jackpot minus the fee for taking the winnings in a lump sum minus the nearly 40 percent taxes.

After all that minusing what he comes up with is still a really big mega millions number. He likes really big mega millions numbers and would welcome them into his life.

I would not.

A few times a year my husband and I buy a lottery ticket. I always cross my fingers it’s a lucky one. I hope we match lots of numbers. I want us to be winners.

But I don’t want to win the lottery.

Not the whole thing. That would be too much. A mega million dollars would turn my life upside down. It would change everything and change is hard. Even when it makes you mega millions rich.

Having a mega million dollars would complicate life in ways I don’t want complicated. I’d have to wonder if people liked me or my millions. I’d have to hire someone to manage my money and then I’d have to worry about them being dishonest. Lots of people would see me as a blank check.

I’d be deluged by investment opportunities and potential business deals. I might even find out I had a bunch of new relatives. Everyone would want a piece of me, or better put, my money.

In a world like that it’s hard to trust anyone. It’s difficult to relax.

So I don’t want to win the lottery.

I just want to win a nice little jackpot that might be enough to pay off my kids’ student loans or maybe even the mortgage. I don’t want an amount that would change my life; I just want to make it a little easier.

So when my husband and I buy our lottery ticket, we have differing desires for the outcome. He longs for mega millions; I for mega thousands.

And that’s okay. We learned years ago that we can look up at the same sky and one of us will see blue while the other sees a jet plane flying overhead.

Besides, it’s highly unlikely either of us will ever see fruition to our personal vision of winning the lottery. We aren’t lucky like that.

Well, except for that one time when we won the $4.

York grads come together for classmate with cancer York grads have banded together to help Matt Haller, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. All it took were four little words to see our town come together as one --- “Matt Haller needs our help.”

We all grew up here in Elmhurst, a town with a cute little downtown area (or “uptown” to those from the north side), some great schools, tons of parks, a few pools and a world class library visited by many. Sure you can say that most towns have something similar, but what they don’t have is the “heart” that Elmhurst has.

We are York High School gradu-

ates; we’re raising our children in this town because “if it was good enough for us, it’s good enough for our children.” I often get asked the question, “how can you still hang around all of your high school friends” and my response usually is “ How can I NOT, those are my lifelong buddies?”

Friendships – what defines them?

Sure we all have a wide variety of friends (the fun friend, the friend who we can call on all hours of the night), the foundation of a friendship is built on common interests, trust and a genuine concern for each other.

Sometimes a friend just needs a

shoulder to cry on, while sometimes a friend needs serious help. It’s easy to distinguish which is which and this time our friend Matt needs our help.

Matt was recently diagnosed with stomach cancer and it’s devastating to hear this. Matt is way too young and has way too much to live for. However, it’s the card he’s been dealt and he and his family are facing this obstacle head on with a fighting attitude. Although the prognosis is pretty bleak at this point, that doesn’t stop Matt from putting up one heck of a battle. He’s been working with the best doctors from the most prestigious hospitals in

the Chicagoland area. He’s not giving up and neither are we -- his friends from Elmhurst.

Many people have stepped up to make sure that whatever the outcome may be, Matt, his wife Colleen, and their beautiful son Cullen, are taken care of. Here’s what’s going on at the Elmhurst Park District

The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on Jan. 29 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street. Commissioner Tim Sheehan was absent from the meeting.

There were no public comments.

Purchase of financial, human resources software approved The board voted unanimously to approve the purchase of a financial, payroll and human resources management software system, including implementation, from BS&A Software at a cost not to exceed $149,190.

According to the park district, the district’s current financial software and separate payroll and human services software have been in place for close to 20 years. Those systems, which are reportedly obsolete, no longer receive updates from their vendors.

ers used by other park districts and narrowed the choice to BS&A and Tyler/Incode. The BS&A software includes the first-year implementation cost of $149.140, with recurring annual maintenance charges of nearly $10,000.The Tyler/Incode software includes a similar first-year implementation cost ($146,430); its annual maintenance cost is about $40,000.

Several area park districts have recently implemented the BS&A system, which will allow for the conversion of 10 years of the Elmhurst Park District’s database history. The purchase has been budgeted in the district’s 2018 fiscal year spending plan.

Board members also voted unanimously during the meeting to approve the purchase of 75 PC workstations from Dell at a total cost of nearly $48,000. According to the district, the information technology industry standard for replacing workstations is after three to four years. The park district’s PC workstations have reportedly reached or passed that age.

The district sought pricing from multiple PC resellers and manufacturers. The district sent specifications to Dell, CDW-G and SHI for quotes on 75 workstations. Dell submitted the

The district is in the process of seeking reaccreditation. The process includes the submission of information and evidence, as well as an evaluation, to a committee. The district paid an application fee of $500 to go through the reaccreditation process.

If you are a woman who wears contact lenses, it is important to work your makeup routine around your lenses. First off, lenses should be inserted over the eyes before any makeup is applied.

Washing your hands when doing so ensures that no oils, creams, or powders will transfer from your hands to the lenses. Once you get makeup in an eye that has a contact lens in it, it can be very difficult to get the makeup off the lens. It is therefore preferable to use non-allergenic products and substitute creams for powders, which have airborne particles that can float into the eyes. If you must use powdered makeup, keep your eyes closed during application.

Wearing contact lenses is different from wearing eyeglasses because contacts are worn directly on your eyes. It’s therefore important to adhere to prescribed handling and wearing guidelines. If you wear makeup, you need to take the precautions noted in this week’s column. When the upper jaw is too narrow with respect to the lower jaw, it can lead to tooth crowding and crossbite. To address

Resting against the roof of the mouth, the expander is affixed to the molars on either side of the dental arch. In the middle of the device is an expansion joint that is periodically widened to provide outward pressure that forces open the lengthwise central joint (or “suture”) between the bones of the palate. As new bone grows to fill the joint, the jaw remains permanently widened.

ICCP holds Junior High Trivia ‘Knight’ Last fall, IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) welcomed more than 40 students to compete in the annual Academic Olympiad – Trivia KNIGHT. This annual event is sponsored by the ICCP Social Studies Department and the ICCP Model United Nations Team.

Participants were quizzed on a variety of academic subjects including Math, Science, Theology, English, Art, Social Studies, and Foreign Language, along with current events and pop culture.

Teams brought a great sense of school pride and competitive energy by creating their unique team name, custom designed t-shirts, and team posters to decorate their table. Pizza and

D205 student artwork heads to ‘Reflections’ state competition Elmhurst District 205 student artists had a very strong regional showing this year for the PTA Reflections Program. Twenty-two D205 students submitted projects that have been advanced to the state competition level.

Reflections is a PTA-sponsored arts recognition and achievement program for students in kindergarten through high school. Students submit original projects in literature, music composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography or film/video production. Projects are judged and qualifying works advance through local, district, regional, state and national levels.

Student artwork reflects on a theme set by the national Reflections committee. This year’s theme was “Within Reach.” Elmhurst District 205 Reflections chair Michelle Wehrle has volunteered for the program for several years and said she is always impressed by the talent of Elmhurst students.

“This year, we had everything from a hand-sculpted horse figurine to multi-media landscapes to computer-generated collages to pop song ballads,” said Wehrle.

“Reflections offers kids an opportunity to really stretch their creative muscles.”

Emily Belden presents ‘Hot Mess’ at upcoming book-signing events

The book Hot Mess (March 20, 2018; Harlequin/Graydon House) is the story of a young woman thrust into Chicago’s restaurant scene when her recovering addict-turnedcelebrity chef boyfriend relapses and vanishes after she sinks her life savings into his hip new restaurant.

Left with nothing but a massive withdrawal slip and a Randolph Street restaurant that absolutely must open in a matter of weeks, Allie Simon—a social media manager for a cottonswab company—discovers that she can either crumble completely or fight like hell for the life she wants and the love she deserves.

The food-scene novel by Chicago author and food writer Emily Belden is due to be released in March, when several local events will be held for conversations with the author and book-signings.

Belden is a native of Elmhurst, who now lives in Chicago.

On Friday, Jan. 19, the Immaculate Conception Grade School student council sponsored “Friday Knight Live,” a showcase of student talent. A parody of “Saturday Night Live,” the show featured previously-recorded commercials for hilarious student-created products. The talent portion showcased several comedic skits, juggling, vocal performances, a dance trio, a piano medley, and a rousing guitar accompaniment to Bon Jovi’s, “You Give Love a Bad Name.” The show concluded with 6th grade students re-enacting the Beatles’ first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

Elmhurst Student Chess Tournament coming March 7

The 22nd annual Elmhurst Student Chess Tournament will be held on Wednesday, March 7, beginning at 6 p.m. in the York High School Commons, 355 W. St. Charles Road. Students will compete at the following six levels: 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6-8th grade and high school. Last year, more than 250 students participated in the tournament.

All students who attend school in Elmhurst – public or private – are welcome to participate with the com-

pletion and submission of a signed permission slip and tournament fee of $3. All participants will receive a certificate; the top four in each category receive ribbons; and the tournament champions receive a trophy.

The annual Student Chess Tournament is organized by parent volunteers, many of whom coach chess clubs at their children’s schools.

Contestants will compete within the rules, playing five timed matches each. Volunteer judging is performed

by independent chess experts who are brought in from the outside specifically for this event. Snacks and drinks will be donated and provided. Pizza will be sold during the tournament.

The registration deadline is Thursday, March 1. Interested families may contact their child’s school chess club leader for the permission slip and rules.

The IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) National Honor Society led their annual toy drive and on Thursday, Dec. 14, members loaded up cars with boxes of goodies and delivered more than 200 toys to the Toy Express main facility. Leaders also collected cash to be used to purchase even more toys for the donation. Overall, more than $270 was collected and used to purchase even more gifts.

Panhellenic Foundation plans annual fashion show The Elmhurst Panhellenic Foundation presents their annual Wild for Fashion Wild fundraising event on Friday, Feb. 16. Wild for Fashion is a fashion show and silent auction event and is the primary fundraiser to benefit scholarships for Elmhurst area students.

The fashion show will feature sensational spring fashions from Elmhurst retailers, including: E Lounge, Enzee Boutique, FiFi’s Tailor and Custom Design, Hazyl Boutique, Kie&Kate Couture, Maxine Handbags and Accessories, redE boutique, Uptown Shop and York Furrier. The fashions will be modeled by local Elmhurst women.

York Athletic Boosters announce Green Scene fundraiser The York Athletic Boosters will hold its Annual Green Scene Fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Fitz’s Spare Keys in downtown Elmhurst from 7 p.m. to 12 midnight. This event includes bowling with coaches, open pool, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, light buffet and cash bar. Pre-sale tickets are $50.

Joint Review Board meets, recommends new downtown TIF

During the month of February, DuPage County Meetings schedule: residents have an opportunity to influence the future of our County’s road, trail and transit system. The Thursday, Feb. 15 from 5 to 7 p.m.

County is hosting a series of public meetings to hear Community Rec Center your ideas for improving transportation throughout DuPage. The County Board wants to know how you 120 E. On Wednesday, Jan. 24, the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Joint Review Board voted 5-1 recommending a new Downtown TIF. The Joint Review Board is an advisory group with six representatives from all main taxing districts within the boundary of the TIF. A representative from Kane McKenna Associates reviewed the redevelopment plan and project and the qualifying factors for establishing a new Downtown TIF based on the requirements of the Illinois TIF Act. The downtown area has experienced successful growth, but there is still much work to be done to keep the central business district desirable and vibrant.

The proposed Downtown TIF will provide for necessary funding of improvements and redevelopment in the future.

The primary focus of the TIF will be to continue the implementation of the adopted 2016 Downtown Plan and provide opportunity for re-

development of underutilized properties in the downtown area.

The Board votes on recommendations to approve or reject the redevelopment plan and project based on the plan satisfying the plan requirements, eligibility criteria and objectives of the Illinois TIF Act. The final vote for recommendation to approve the Downtown TIF was 5-1.

The next steps involve additional notices to the community, a public hearing on March 5, and a final vote

by Elmhurst City Council.

York boys basketball team returns favor against Downers Grove North Team effort fuels Dukes to 15th win of season

Earlier in the season, the York boys basketball team suffered a tough 58-56 loss in double overtime at Downers Grove North.

The second time around though, it was the Dukes getting their hands raised after a recent 58-45 West Suburban Conference Silver Division win against the Trojans in Elmhurst.

York led 11-4 after the first quarter and 26-9 at halftime. Downers North outscored York 36-32 in the second half. The two teams combined to put up 46 points in the fourth quarter alone.

“We got off to a really good start,” said York coach Vince Doran. “We played really good defense and turned them over a little bit and cre-

ated offense with our defense.”

Sam Walsh led the Dukes with 13 points and five rebounds. John Milling had 12 points, while Angelo Martucci had 11 points. Nick Kosich had seven points, four rebounds and six assists. Erik Cohn had six rebounds. York shot 60 percent from the field and 70.8 percent from two.

The Dukes also hit 66.7 percent of their free throws (12 of 18) and limited Downers North to 40 percent shooting from the field while forcing 14 turnovers.

“Sam Walsh had his best game of the year,” declared Doran. “He shot 5-for-8 from the field and had 13 points. John Milling also did a great job going 3-for-3 from the field and 2-for-3 from three. Angelo also had his best performance. It was a good

team win.”

The win pushed York to 15-8 overall and 5-3 in the tough WSC Silver.

“We’ve been doing a good job rebounding the ball,” said Doran. “We limited Downers North to one shot most of the time. We lost to them in two overtimes at their place. We didn’t want them getting secondand third-chance opportunities. We wanted to limit them to one shot and we did that and they were contested shots, in the first half especially.

We’re getting better rebounding, but we still have to get better at taking care of the ball, valuing it and treating it like gold. We’re still too loose with the ball at times.”

In earlier action, the Dukes went to Glen Ellyn and recorded a 64-57

WSC Silver win. York led 10-8 after the first quarter but trailed 25-23 at halftime. York outscored Glenbard West 17-14 in the third quarter and 24-18 in the fourth quarter to record the win.

Kosich led the Dukes with 18 points to go with three assists and two steals. He shot 5-for-8 from the 3-point line and York hit 9 of 20 threes as a team in the contest (45 percent).

Martucci added 15 points to go with six rebounds and three steals, while Nate Shockey had nine points.

Cohn also had nine points to go with a team-high nine rebounds and three

assists. Walsh had seven points and five rebounds. York forced 15 Glenbard West turnovers in the contest.

York faces league-unbeaten Oak Park-River Forest (away) and Hinsdale Central (home Saturday for senior night) this weekend in a pair of WSC Silver games.

“It’s a big weekend coming up for us,” said Doran. “Oak Park hasn’t lost in the league. I’m very happy where we are at. If you look at our record we’ve won six of our last eight and we’re tied for second in the league right now. We’re playing really well. We want to keep that momentum going into the playoffs.”

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team scores big road win at ACC Gaudio leads way with 17 points

Winning on the road never is easy in any sport.

So the IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team’s recent 52-35 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win at Aurora Central Catholic was especially satisfying.

“We avenged a loss to them earlier in the season,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “It was a good win on the road. ACC is a tough place to play. We had a really good week of practice and the guys felt very confident. We made some adjustments to the game plan after watching film and we wanted to take away what ACC does well and that’s cause chaos with their aggressive traps and throwing a lot of guys at the basketball. Last time we played them they had us back on our heels and we made a lot of careless turnovers. We turned the ball over 27 times at home. This time we were much more composed.”

The Knights led 16-8 after the first quarter and 22-13 at halftime. A 2213 third-quarter run for IC Catholic Prep salted it away.

Nico Gaudio led the Knights with 17 points. Kevin Cheng had 11 points, while Alex Meurer had nine points and Kris Askew had eight points. Meurer hit one 3-pointer.

“Nico Gaudio played like a man with his strength and how he finished,” said Tyrrell. “I was proud of his effort. Khali Saunders also had a big presence and was hard to contain

and that opened other things for our guys. Kris Askew also had one of his better games of the season. He handled their full-court pressure and got us in our half-court offense. Sophomore Ryan Wojtalewicz was outstanding with his help-side defense and boxing out. He played a positive role for the team in helping us hold ACC to 13 points in the first half.”

Tyrrell noted ACC’s top player, who was averaging 22 points a contest, was greatly limited in the game.

“We took their best player out of the game,” said Tyrrell. “Alex Meurer guarded him without helping off and did an outstanding job locking him down. He finished with 13 points and did not have one 3-point shot, which is the strength of his game. He only had (four) field goals. I was very proud of Alex’s effort in containing him. He ended up fouling out early in the fourth quarter. Kevin Cheng took a charge on him and took him out of the game. At that point, the ACC coach pulled all his guys and put in bench guys with six minutes left in the fourth quarter. We controlled the tempo from the opening tip. It was an outstanding effort all the way around.”

Earlier, the Knights lost to highly toured Aurora Christian on the road in a non-conference game that was featured as Comcast’s game of the week.

“Aurora Christian is a tough team,” said Tyrrell. “It was the Comcast game of the week and that was a lot of fun to be part of. We battled the whole game against them. We had lost to Riverside-Brookfield the night before on a half-court shot at

the buzzer and we came back the next night prepared and focused against Aurora Christian. They hit a half-court shot to go up nine points at half and that took a little wind out of our sails, but I thought our kids did an outstanding job battling. We got it down to three points with 30 seconds to go. Aurora Christian has two Division I players, but we did a nice job competing. We did make some poor decisions on some possessions we needed to get back and that led to them pulling out the win.

“In the locker room after the game the coaching staff was positive. We felt the kids battled in both games (R-B and Aurora Christian) and then they came in and had a good week of practice and took care of ACC.” Tyrrell lauded the work of Cheng in the Aurora Christian contest. “Kevin Cheng had one of his best games of the year against them,” he said. “He kept us in the game. He took it upon himself to create opportunities. I was proud of his competitiveness. He was a driving force.”

The win against ACC pushed IC Catholic Prep to 15-8 overall and 6-4 in MSC Blue play. The Knights had three games left in the regular season against Glenbard South, Illiana Christian and Wheaton Academy.“Our goal is to finish strong these last three games,” said Tyrrell.

“We want to win the last three. If we can take care of the last three games we can say we beat all the teams in the conference. Glenbard South and Wheaton Academy are the ones we still need to beat.”

The Knights will find out their postseason seeding this week.

IC Catholic Prep JV wrestling team earns six medals at conference tournament Finn Barney wins 106-pound conference title; 10 wrestlers earn honor-roll status

The IC Catholic Prep wrestling team continues to establish new benchmarks.

At the recent Metro Suburban Conference junior-varsity tournament (Gary Schulze Invitational at Elmwood Park), the Knights had six wrestlers earn medals. IC Catholic Prep brought a program all-time-high 10 wrestlers to the JV tournament. No team scores are kept, but the six medalists was the most of any school in the tournament.

“I was very proud of the entire team,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Kevin Sliva. “They definitely wrestled their hearts out.”

IC Catholic Prep freshman Finn Barney won the 106-pound MSC JV title and also was named to the school’s high-honor roll for his accomplishments in the classroom.

Sophomore Malachi Morris was fifth at 145, while junior Declan Barney was fifth at 182 pounds. Freshman Nicholas Niecikowski was fourth at 220, while freshman Julian Vega was fifth at 285 pounds.

“Finn and John have been wrestling only since November and the coaches all are impressed with how they have started to put things together here at the end of their first season,” said Sliva. “Both worked extremely hard in practice all week leading up to the tourney.”

Sliva noted Finn Barney notched a pair of first-period pins and then won 4-3 in the championship match.

“What’s the most impressive about his tournament run was that earlier in the week the school announced he had earned high-honor-roll status for the previous quarter,” the coach pointed out. “So, he earned high honor roll—which is not an easy task as a freshman to earn a 3.86 grade-point average with no grade below a ‘B’— worked hard in practice all week and

dominated the competition earning his first gold medal and first medal of any kind in the toughest sport.”

At the varsity level, IC Catholic Prep recently dropped a non-conference decision to Aurora Christian, which came into the meet as the No. 1-ranked team in Class 1A . Bishop McNamara, which joins the Metro Suburban Conference next school year, was supposed to be in the meet as well but did not appear.

Sliva also announced IC Catholic Prep has been invited back to the prestigious Dvorak tournament that will take place Dec. 22-23 at Harlem High School near Rockford.

“It’s lauded as the toughest in-season tournament in the state,” he pointed out. “This will continue to give our most experienced wrestlers a chance

to obtain elite experience and exposure.”

IC Catholic Prep also has been invited and has entered the third-annual Abe’s Rumble dual-team tournament, which is a two-day, 50-team dual-format tournament at the Springfield Convention Center Dec. 28-29.

“It’s only for Class 1A teams and gives us a chance to compete against many of the top Class 1A schools that we normally wouldn’t see until the state meet in Champaign or the dual-team state tournament in Bloomington,” said Sliva.

Sliva also announced 10 IC Catholic Prep wrestlers earned honor-roll status in the classroom.

Making the high honor roll (3.7 grade-point average or higher while receiving all grades of ‘B’ or better)

were Finn Barney, Ryan Kenneally, Charlie O’Brien, Anthony Niecikowski, Nicholas Niecikowski and Jalen Williams.

Earning honor roll status (3.2 GPA or higher while receiving all grades of ‘C’ or better) were Joey Bianchini, Michael Johnson and team managers Gisselle Amarillo and Gianna Jaeger.

“The most important part of the week was that we had 10 team members earn honor-roll status,” said Sliva.

York girls bowlers second at regional; Dukes wrestling team does well at Leyden regional

The York girls bowling team continued its impressive season by taking second at the recent Metea Valley regional.

The Dukes finished with a pinfall of 5,497. Willowbrook won the regional with a total of 5,705.

York had high team games of 975, 963 and 948.

Senior Lauren Gould was fourth overall with a score of 1,204. Junior Ruby Noel was 12th with an 1,105, while senior Lauren Steck was 13th with an 1,105 as well. Junior Krystyna Panek was 19th with a 1,057, while sophomore Nora O’Brien was 21st with a 1,026.

Gould had high games of 251, 210, 201 and 200. She finished with a 618 series after the lunch break and averaged 200.7 for the tournament.

Noel had high games of 214 and 200, while Steck had high games of 226 and 208. She finished with a 609 series for her final three games.

Panek had high games of 193, 192

and 185, while O’Brien had high games of 199 and 191.

York wrestling The York wrestling team was third at the recent Class 3A Leyden regional and had numerous individuals earn sectional bids.

York finished with 136 points. Addison Trail was second with 162 and Oak Park-River Forest won the team title with 281.5 points.

Matt Cozzi is headed to sectionals after taking second at 126. The sophomore brings a 22-18 record into this weekend’s competition.

Jason Lewis also is headed to sectionals after placing second at 138.

He is now 9-7.

Anthony Cozzi was second at 152 pounds. Cozzi, a senior, now is 2213. Jake Smallwood also was second at 160. Smallwood moved to 24-12.

Zach Armstrong placed third at 170 pounds. Armstrong won a major decision in the third-place match (112) and now has 17 wins.

York girls gymnastics The York girls gymnastics team

took third at the recent Oak Park-River Forest regional. The Dukes had no automatic sectional qualifiers.

York girls basketball The York girls basketball team recorded a recent 46-30 non-conference win against Oswego East.

Danielle Dennis led the Dukes with 17 points. She hit 6 of 8 free-throw attempts. Matty Stark had nine points, while Kathleen Levins had six points.

Earlier, the Dukes were 63-42 West Suburban Conference Silver Division winners against Oak Park-River Forest.

York trailed 13-11 after the first quarter, but used a 27-8 run in the second quarter to pull ahead. York also outscored OPRF 17-13 in the third quarter and 12-4 in the fourth quarter.

Caylin Rufus led the Dukes with 16 points, including 11 in the first half. Stark had 15 points, including 13 in the first half. Dennis finished with 11 points and Madison Park had five points. Stark made three 3-pointers in the first half.

ference game to Benet Academy. The Dukes led 18-11 after the first quarter and 31-26 at halftime. Benet outscored York 20-9 in the third quarter and 15-9 in the fourth.

Dennis led the Dukes with 25 points, including four 3-pointers.

Stark had eight points and hit two 3-pointers. Park had seven points and Levins finished with six points.

Timothy Christian girls basketball The Timothy Christian girls basketball team dropped a recent 56-37 Metro Suburban Conference Red Division game to Walther Christian.

Walther ended up sharing the Red Division title with Elgin St. Edward.

Walther led 17-10 after the first quarter and 31-22 at halftime. Walther outscored Timothy 16-8 in the third quarter.

Jordyn Strube led the Trojans with 11 points. She made three 3-pointers.

Sureya Alex had nine points, while Olivia Schuringa had eight points.

Alex also hit three 3-pointers.

Strube finished with four assists

and eight rebounds. Emily DeBoer also had eight rebounds, while Hannah Schuringa had six rebounds.

Heidi Westra had four steals, while Strube had three steals and four deflections.

The Trojans then downed Fenton 64-55 in a MSC crossover game.

Timothy led 21-11 after the first quarter and 36-23 at halftime. Fenton outscored Timothy 19-8 in the third quarter, but Timothy finished strong with a 20-13 edge in the fourth.

DeBoer hit for 20 points in the game on 8 of 11 shooting. She also was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Olivia Schuringa had nine points, while Westra had eight points and Hannah Schuringa had seven points.

Timothy made 19 of 27 free-throw attempts (70 percent). Alex was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.

Westra and Abby Carstensen each had five assists. DeBoer finished with a double-double with her 20 points and 10 rebounds. Westra had eight rebounds, while Olivia Schuringa had six rebounds.

IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team records pair of wins Knights head into playoffs this week on a high note

The IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team closed out the regular season with a pair of recent wins.

The Knights were 57-55 winners over Fenton and 41-31 victors over Wheaton Academy in a pair of Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division contests.

“Fenton was a good game,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Kelsey James. “We were up big at one point, but they started hitting their 3s and they made it close.”

IC Catholic Prep trailed by one point with 10 seconds to play in

regulation before Jaida Smith was fouled and hit both of her freethrow attempts to put the team up by a point. IC Catholic Prep stole the ball from Fenton on the next possession and Kiersten King was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws for the final margin.

“It was a really good effort by our team,” said James. “We lost to them by more than 20 points the first time we played them. This time, a different team showed up.

Our girls stayed together when Fenton made a bunch of 3s in the second half. We were able to pull it out.”

James noted the Knights turned in a strong defensive effort in the win against Wheaton Academy. “It was a very good defensive game,” she said. “We kept their leading scorer to 10 points and our other girls defended well and forced a lot of turnovers. Josie Lytton was on their best player for most of the game. We started the game in a 3-2 defense, which limited their shots.

That was a difference-maker. We limited them and held them to one point in the first quarter.”

Smith led the Knights with 11 points in the Wheaton Academy win. Alisa Johnson and Claire

Gibler each had 13 points in the win against Fenton.

The Knights finished the regular season 8-16 overall and 3-9 in MSC Blue play.

“We’re playing better right now,” said James. “Claire coming back gave us a new confidence. We’re starting to put the pieces together.

We are 3-1 in our last four games (to close out the regular season).

It’s been a great turnaround going into the playoffs.”

James lauded the play of Smith during that four-game stretch, as well as Gibler. “Jaida Smith has had some really good games for

us,” the coach said. “She scored in double digits in three of the four games. Claire has been putting the points in since she came back.”

Gibler recorded her 1,000th varsity point in the win against Wheaton Academy.

IC Catholic Prep opens the Class 2A postseason at home tonight against Willows Academy. An IC Catholic Prep win puts it in Friday night’s IC Catholic Prep regional title game.

If the Knights win the regional they will play in the Class 2A Chicago Christ the King sectional next week.

Three more wins for Timothy Christian boys basketball team Trojans run winning streak to nine games in a row

Three more games and three more wins for the Timothy Christian boys basketball team.

The Trojans recorded recent wins against Peoria Christian (62-30), Walther Christian (64-54) and Westmont (57-43).

In a 57-43 win against Westmont, which had beaten Timothy in the first game of the season, the Trojans trailed 11-8 after the first quarter and 23-21 at halftime. But the Trojans outscored Westmont 17-12 in the third quarter and 19-8 in the fourth.

Brandon Orange led the Trojans with 23 points to go with nine rebounds. Nick Huisman added 10 points and seven rebounds. Ty Merrick had nine points and seven assists, while Justin Baez had six points and

five rebounds. Michael Thomas had six points and six assists. Michael Martens had two steals. The Trojans shot 42 percent from the field.

“Defensively in the second half against Westmont we were really good,” said Timothy coach Scott Plasier. “We went on a 19-0 run against them with Brandon Orange catching a little bit of fire. He scored on the block a bunch and went on an 11- or 13-0 run all by himself midway through the third. He got it rolling. I think he had 22 second-half points. Us getting him the ball in key situations was big during that run.

We played defense pretty well and 18 of our 21 field goals had assists with them so we shared the ball pretty well. We also had 17 deflections so defensively we were getting our hands moving pretty good. We were getting in passing lanes and putting pressure on the ball. We were able to get a little bit of redemption after they beat us earlier in the year.”

Timothy then headed to Melrose

Park to face Walther Christian. The Trojans led 14-13 after the first quarter and used a 20-9 run in the second quarter to go up 34-22.

Orange again led the Trojans with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Thomas had 11 points and three steals. Sophomore Matt Owens had nine points and five rebounds. Merrick had seven points to go with nine assists. Huisman had six points on two 3-pointers to go with five rebounds. Timothy shot 50 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free-throw line.

“Walther was a good team. They are a scrappy bunch and tough,” said Plasier. “They play very hard and the game was in their gym,

which is a tough place to play for sure. We didn’t do a ton well against them. We scored 64 points and made some shots and free throws down the stretch that helped us. They did a good job keeping us off balance.

They attacked us hard off the dribble. It was one of those games. They had the gym full and it was a rowdy crowd. They played off their fans. It was a good environment to play in.

Walther played really hard and we responded enough down the stretch to hold on and get the win.”

Plasier cited strong play from Husiman, who has returned from injury in recent weeks. “Nick is back from his injury and has played really well

defensively and has done well rebounding,” he said. “He made a couple 3s against Walther.”

Merrick also was lauded for his continued strong play. “Ty Merrick is playing super-consistent basketball,” the coach said. “And Michael Thomas had a nice little scoring night for us against Walther Christian.”

The wins put the Trojans at 18-4 overall and they sit atop the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division with an 8-0 record. Timothy faces Elmwood Park and Ridgewood this week in conference play before closing out the regular season with league games against Guerin Prep and Elgin St. Edward.

Team work, strong chemistry fuels Timothy Christian girls basketball team Trojans enjoying renaissance season; Finished 8-4 in conference

What a difference a year makes!

Last season, the Timothy Christian girls basketball team finished 13-15. Fast forward a calendar year and things are vastly different for the Trojans, who finished the regular season 17-9 and 8-4 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play. Timothy , which earned a No. 1 regional seed for the start of this week’s postseason, took third in conference behind Walther Christian and St. Edward, which split the title.

So what has led to the turnaround for coach Michele Strube’s team?

How about a combination of talent (young and old), strong team chemistry and a coaching staff that draws

high marks from the players.

“There is great chemistry between the players and coaches,” Timothy junior Abby Carstensen said. “We have two sets of sisters on the team (Carstensen’s freshman sister, Sarah, now is on the varsity, plus there is the senior-freshman sister combination of Olivia and Hannah Schuringa), plus the coaches (Michele and Jon Strube) have their daughter on the team. Mr. and Mrs. Strube are like our parents. They treat us as if we are their own kids. They care about us more than just players. They help us in any way we need, basketball or not.”

Olivia Schuringa agrees with Carstensen’s assessment. “Mrs. Strube, Jordyn’s mom, cares about us more than just a coach,” she said.

“She cares about our lives off the court and she connects with us and that shows on the court. Mr. Strube is the dad presence. He makes us run more (laughs). It’s nice having both of them there as that parent presence

in games.”

Jordyn Strube offers this take about her coaches/parents. “They care about everybody on the team and would do anything for them,” she said. “They want everybody to have fun through basketball. They bring a good atmosphere to the team and we’ve done really well with that.

For me, playing for them can be hard at times. They are a little harder on me, but I love playing for them. I like having coaches who can be hard on me.”

Schuringa added that despite the team having a variety of grade levels on the roster, including two freshmen in her sister, Hannah, and guard Sureya Alex (now three freshmen with Sarah Cartstensen’s addition), the team’s chemistry has been off the charts this season.

“We all are really good friends,” she said. “We went to the Dominican Republic (in January as part of the school’s Renew term) and got to know each other a lot better person-

ally off the court. We get along really well. We understand how each other feels.”

Connecting with each other and the coaches is one thing, but results still must be generated on the court for success to occur. Timothy has that covered quite well this season.

The Trojans have enjoyed great scoring balance with Olivia Schuringa leading the way at 9.5 points per game. Hannah Schuringa averages 9.2 points, while Jordyn Strube is at 9.1 points. Emily DeBoer, one of only two seniors on the roster with Olivia Schuringa, averages 7.1 points, while freshman Alex is at 6.8 points and Heidi Westra averages 4.4 points per game.

Alex is leading the team in 3-pointers made with 34, while Strube has 32. Hannah Schuringa is the team’s top rebounder at 8.2 per game. DeBoer is averaging 6.6 rebounds, while Olivia Schuringa is at 6.3 rebounds and has 38 blocked shots. Strube is shooting 74 percent

Timothy averaged a robust 38.3 rebounds per game during the regular season.

“We have people at every position who are playing well,” said Abby Carstensen, a junior guard. “Every position is covered well and you have chemistry on the team where everybody is so encouraging. People always are lifting each other up.”

Jordyn Strube added: “We have a good range of guards who all have different skills that fit perfectly for us. Our posts finish so well. We have been playing very well as a team.

Schuringa admits she is somewhat surprised at the success the team has enjoyed. “Last year I thought was the best team I had been on in high school,” she said. “This is a very pleasant surprise. We’ve been great. We earned the No. 1 seed in the regional and have done a lot of great things.

Carstensen added: “It’s amazing how far we have come. I kind of had a feeling we would do well. Everybody gets along so well. We build each other up and we play well together.”

Strube also admits she’s surprised at what has transpired this season, but had an inkling something big might be brewing. “Only because we are really young,” she said. “We only have two seniors and two freshmen playing. I’m a little surprised, but didn’t doubt we could do this well.”

Olivia Schuringa said the team has benefitted from the play of her sister, Hannah, and Alex, the two freshmen, and Abby Carstensen, who also is new to the team this season. “With Sureya and Hannah they have energy and a good skill level and know the fundamentals,” she said. “Abby has played basketball, but she is new this year.

Freedom: A History of US exhibit opens at History Museum Now through March 11, Freedom: A History of US, is on display at the Elmhurst History Museum.

The struggle for freedom in America has shaped every aspect of our country since its inception, and continues today in many ways unforeseen by our nation’s founders. The evolving concept of freedom and its pursuit is explored in this touring exhibition from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, illu-

minating critical figures and events from our nation’s birth until 1968.

Highlights include: reproductions of a rare 1776 printing of the Declaration of Independence, a secretly printed draft and official copy of the U.S. Constitution, Lincoln’s handwritten speech notes, and letters by Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and Martin Luther King Jr. The exhibit will be supplemented with materials connected to Elmhurst

including a 1924 KKK rally flyer on loan from the National Park Service, manuscripts related to the Elmhurst Fair Housing Ordinance, and correspondence with veterans from the Civil War and WWI eras.

The Museum is located at 120 E. Park Ave. and admission is free.

History Museum offers programs related to current exhibit Meet President Abe and wife Mary Todd Lincoln In February, the History Museum will be hosting two programs related to its latest exhibit, Freedom: A History of US. On Sunday, Feb. 11 from 2-3:30 p.m., the Museum presents ‘The Lincolns Present: The Genesis of the Gettysburg Address.” The program is free to members, $5 for non-members.

Join President Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln on the eve of his birthday to hear about the genesis of his most famous speech and a treasured American document, “The Gettysburg Address.”

Brought to life by first-person history presenters Max and Donna Daniels, learn the context of the address and their time in the White House, participate in a Q&A session, and take a photo with the beloved President and First Lady in the “Freedom: A History of US” exhibit. Participating children can test their 19th-century handwriting skills using a steel-tipped pen and ink. All ages welcome.

Kiwanis, Elmhurst Symphony host annual Stanger auditions

Public invited to attend on Feb. 17 The public is invited to attend the 2018 Dr. Robert Stanger Young Artists Audition on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Rd. in Elmhurst. Hours are from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. and 1 to 4:15 p.m. Those attending this free event may come and go throughout the day. Conducted by the Elmhurst Symphony Association and sponsored by the Elmhurst Kiwanis Club and the former Auxiliary of the ESO through its Eunice B. Sidener Scholarship, the annual Stanger Audition was started in honor of the late Dr. Robert C Stanger, who was president of Elmhurst College, a Kiwanian, and president of the Elmhurst Symphony Association Board of Directors.

Three judges will offer written comments to each of the 23 high school entrants who come from Elmhurst and other area suburbs.

Students will play music by a wide range of composers and for several different instruments, including violin, viola, cello, string bass, oboe, flute, saxophone, French horn, marimba and piano.

Monetary awards are given to the four top performers; the firstplace winner will perform with the ESO during its 2018-19 season.

What do we learn from Groundhog Day?

We all know that on the morning of Feb. 2, the groundhog peeks his head out of his hole and predicts the weather.

Yeah. Right.

What did he predict this year? Does anyone know? Or take any stock in it? Six more weeks of winter if he sees his shadow. If it’s a cloudy day and he sees no shadow, the spring season will come early. Hmm. If it’s a sunny day, he dives back into his hole for six more weeks of hiding?

Wouldn’t he want to come out into the sunshine?

It doesn’t matter. Six weeks past Feb. 2 is March 16. If spring were to arrive then, we all would be happy. The Spring Equinox happens every year on March 19, 20, or 21 anyway (this year March 20). Six more weeks of winter or early spring seem synonymous to me. And I don’t mind winter.

The other thing that comes to mind on this day is the movie Groundhog Day, the 1993 Bill Murray flick. I didn’t see it when it first came out, assuming it was a dumb schtick comedy. In recent years, I viewed it and was delightfully surprised.

I’m not the only one. The movie has become a respected classic.

You know the premise of the film, and if you don’t, watch it. If you haven’t seen it in a while, give it 101 minutes of your time. It’s not just Bill Murray’s character being stuck in a time loop and going through Groundhog Day repeatedly.

We don’t re-live the exact same day over and over, yet life itself is a series of days where we can start again fresh, implementing what we learned the day before. Our vault of knowledge and wisdom is cumulative. How we behave and react should absolutely be influenced by what we learned the day before.

It takes time to develop a sense of understanding about life. Our world view can shift as we experience more and more days. As movie critic Roger Ebert said about the film back then, “Just

because we’re born as SOBs doesn’t mean we have to By live that way.”

KELLY As I always say, SIMMONS even if you were Columnist born a Crabby Abby, you don’t have to stay that way. Or a worrier, or poor, or not healthy, or fearful, or whatever. With each day, we gain deeper insight and we can stop spinning our wheels in the same old same old. You can absolutely “change your stars,” to quote another movie (A Knight’s Tale, in case you were wondering.)

Don’t get stuck on what the calendar tells us, or what the media tells us, or what society tells us. You are here to experience each day fully. If tomorrow happens, wake up and enjoy that day fully. Build on what you know. Explore new possibilities. Maybe you want to learn French or how to play the piano. Maybe you would rather play with paint or go hiking. Every day, do something you enjoy.

If you can implement that one rule (do something you enjoy every day), your life will change.

The days may all look the same in one regard and yet you’re expanding, little by little. That is all it takes to achieve a happy life.

No matter the weather, the movies you watch, the external circumstances you face, make this the day you renew your focus on you, your life, your goals and dreams. As Bill Murray as Phil said in the movie, “I’m not going to live by their rules anymore.”

Smile more. Enjoy a little more silly, and order up a fulfilling life.
