District 205 to break ground at Edison in March

At the regular meeting of the Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held on Jan. 28 at the District 205 Center Superintendent Dr. David Moyer offered an

update on the district’s upcoming facilities projects.

Moyer told the board that groundbreaking for the project at Edison Elementary School is expected to take place in late March.

The project at Edison includes a

major addition and renovation to add capacity to balance district enrollment, and to house students from Lincoln Elementary School and Field Elementary School. Both Lincoln and Field will be replaced with new school buildings. The

new Lincoln school is expected to be ready for the 2022-23 school year. The new Field school could potentially be open for the 2023-24 school year.

In addition to the upcoming project at Edison Elementary School,

the district will soon begin work at Bryan Middle School. Bryan will host students from Lincoln while the new Lincoln school is under construction.

Elmhurst firefighter Jeff Hayes has been visiting Jackson Elementary School first grade classes each of the 22 years of his career to teach students about fire safety and 9-1-1 protocol. Last week, in honor of his retirement and the 100th day of school, Hayes made his final visit to Jackson. District 205 and Jackson Elementary School thanks him for his service to the community and students and wishes him well.

State of the City address A few weeks ago, the Independent published a story about Mayor Steve Morley’s State of the City address that contained an error in one of his quotes. The story indicated that the Police and Firefighters pension funds were funded at 80%, but that was incorrect. According to the Firefighters Pension Fund, it is funded at 60.57%. The Police Pension Fund is funded at 57.63%. Mayor Morley’s quote indicated that Elmhurst’s pension obligations are “funded higher than about 80% of the towns in Illinois.” The Independent regrets the error.

LWV Candidate’s forum In last week’s Independent, a story appeared about the Elmhurst League of Women Voters’ recent Candidate forum. The story stated the Illinois Voter Guide would be live at IllinoisVoterGuide.org in November, but in fact, it will be operational as of Feb. 6. Feb. 6 is also the first day of early voting at local election authorities. According to the Elmhurst League, that would be Wheaton. The Independent regrets the error.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

The contents of the cartridge tested positive for cannabis. The suspect was released at the scene without charges. The suspect’s parent was notified of the incident. The suspect will be referred to the Peer Jury program.

Assault, battery Jan. 25 Police said officers and medics responded for the report of a bar fight involving bikers who jumped a subject in the parking lot in the 600 block of W. North at around 12:09 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers observed the victim to be bleeding but subsequently refused treatment. The victim told police that the suspects must have mistook him for a rival club member. The victim could not identify the suspects and did not wish to sign complaints.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement, criminal trespass Jan. 27 A reporting officer spoke to a complainant at a school in the 300 block of E. St. Charles at around 11:53 a.m. who reported an unknown suspect(s) damaged a mailbox located near the front of the school. The lock portion of the mailbox had been punched out.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Jan. 25 Police said officers responded to the 600 block of St. Charles at around 8:38 p.m. for the report of a fight in progress. The reporting officer spoke to the victim who stated she had been involved in an argument with the suspect.

The argument turned physical when the suspect allegedly began to punch and kick her.

The suspect was charged with domestic battery and released to her mother.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication Jan. 30 Simone Z. Knight, 24, of Westchester, was charged with DUI, unlawful possession of cannabis by the driver, transportation of open alcohol and driving on the wrong side of the roadway near St. Charles and Hagans at around 3:12 a.m.

Jan. 29 Alan Wasilewski, 25, of Joliet, was charged with DUI in the 300 block of W. Butterfield at around 12:02 a.m.

Jan. 27 Rachel Javellana, 41, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and possession of adult-use cannabis in the 600 block of York at around 4:22 p.m.

Jan. 25 Daniel Wagner, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued

Fleeing-eluding

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop of a suspicious vehicle with a stolen license plate and heavily tinted windows near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 9:02 p.m., the suspect accelerated at a high rate of speed, thus eluding the reporting officer. The suspect was described as a black male, around five feet eight, 130 pounds, wearing a green jacket with fur on the hood.

Harassment, threats Jan. 24-Jan. 27 A victim told police that they received unwanted text messages form a suspect between the above dates. Further investigation is pending.

Jan. 25 A reporting officer spoke to a victim in the 700 block of S. Hawthorne who stated she had broken off a dating relationship with the suspect. The suspect had made multiple attempts to get in touch with the victim and even showed up at her residence. The case is pending investigation.

Jan. 24 A complainant in the 400 block of N. York told police at around 2:37 p.m. that he received a phone call from a claims investigator who stated they received a phone call from an irate customer. No direct threat was made, but based on the caller’s voice, they believe the suspect intended to cause harm. An investigation is pending.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance Jan. 24 Edbert A. Johnson, 34, of Melrose Park, was charged with possession of adult-use cannabis in a vehicle, failure to secure a child in a child-restraint seat, driving while license suspended and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near York and North at around 12:02 p.m. Police said Johnson also had a valid warrant from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office.

Jan. 23 Joseph Bowman, 63, of Forest Park, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and DUI drugs at a gas station in the 200 block of E. Butterfield at around 6:41 p.m. Police said officers responded to the report of an intoxicated motorist. According to police, Bowman appeared disoriented and was unable to answer officers’ questions. A search of the vehicle yielded foil containing PCP, police said.

Suspicious circumstances Jan. 28 A complainant in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill told police at around 6:28 p.m. that an unknown suspect contacted the office and attempted to obtain information on a prescription medication. The complainant believes the unknown suspect was attempting to obtain a prescription for the controlled substance. An investigation is pending.

Jan 24 A complainant in the 100 block of E. South told police at around 5:24 p.m. that her son received a check in the mail from an insurance company. The check was in the amount of $4,550. The complainant contacted the company that issued the check and they advised the check was fraudulent.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Jan, 29 A victim in the 100 block of Geneva told police than an unknown suspect stole two of her credit cards from a kitchen drawer. The suspect was described as a black female with long braids to the middle of her back, wearing a pink coat, black yoga pants with pink and white stripes, brown boots and a small pink purse.

Jan. 28 Attempted retail theft was reported at a liquor store in the 600 block of W. St. Charles at around 4:33 p.m. A reporting officer spoke to the complainant who stated an unknown suspect attempted to remove a case of alcohol.

When confronted, the suspect put down the case and walked out of the door. The suspect could be seen entering a gray Jeep parked outside, and then fled the scene in an unknown direction. The suspect was described as a black male between five feet 10 and six feet tall, wearing a dark jacket, and dark colored pants.

This case is pending investigation.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:15 p.m.

A complainant told police that a suspect described as a white male, around 25 years old, with black hair, a black beard and mustache, wearing a large green coat, a black hooded sweatshirt, black shoes, blue jeans and a black beanie-style hat, removed two display Dyson® vacuums and left the store without paying for the merchandise. The unknown suspect entered a black 4-door sedan (possibly a Nissan)

and left northbound on Route 83.

Jan. 27 Kalan T. McGee, 26, of Chicago, was charged with felony retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 2:37 p.m.

Police said McGee was found to have manipulated the theft prevention devices on several clothing items. The suspect then concealed the merchandise and exited the store without purchasing the items, according to police.

Jan. 26 A reporting officer spoke with a complainant in the 600 block of W. North who reported her purse had been stolen while she was sitting at a table at the above location. The victim then received notification of fraudulent charges on her cards. The case is pending investigation.

Jan. 25 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 200 block of N. York at around 4:27 p.m. The complainant reported three suspects described as black males in their teens entered the store and forcefully removed an Apple iPhone 11 from the display wall. The suspects then fled in a white Toyota Scion driven by an unknown suspect described as a black female. This case is pending further investigation.

Five incidents of a suspect entering unlocked vehicle were reported. Three of the incidents took place in the 200 block of E. Second, and two incidents occurred in the 100 block of N. Willow. In all the incidents, nothing was reported missing from any of the vehicles.

Burglary to an unlocked vehicle was reported in the 500 block of N. Walnut at around 1:01 p.m. The victim’s security camera recorded an unknown subject exit a dark colored sedan and enter his vehicle. The value of the stolen items is unknown at this time.

Burglary to an unlocked vehicle was reported in the 200 block of W. Kimbell at around 1:09 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered her unlocked vehicle and removed a backpack containing her wallet.

Burglary to an unlocked vehicle was reported in the 300 block of N. Larch at around 3:20 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed change.

Jan. 24-Jan. 25 Burglary to an unlocked vehicle was reported in the 100 block of N. Clara. Police said an unknown suspect entered her unlocked vehicle and removed her Apple watch.

Jan. 23 Sheri McCoy, 57, of Villa Park, was charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, driving while license revoked and no insurance at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:13 p.m. Police said McCoy was observed concealing merchandise, removing it from its packaging, and exiting the store without paying for the merchandise. The suspect was taken into custody and was found to be in possession of merchandise and a pair of pliers, according to police.

Residential burglary was reported in the 300 block of Huntington at around 12 noon. A victim told police that a suspect unlawfully entered the residence and removed two pieces of bedroom furniture and a washer/dryer combo.

Further investigation is pending.

• In the 300 block of Ridge, a victim told police that an unknown suspect entered his unlocked vehicle and removed his checkbook, which he later located in a neighbor’s yard. Nothing else appeared to be missing.

Second Illinois coronavirus case confirmed in spouse of first woman diagnosed

The spouse of the first Illinoisan confirmed to have novel coronavirus has also tested positive for the illness and is being monitored, health officials said Jan. 30.

The case is the first confirmed person-to-person transmission of the virus in the U.S. and the sixth confirmed case in the country.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike hosted a news conference with county and city health officials in Chicago and said “the risk to the general public remains low.”

“The second case is a Chicago man and is the husband of the first confirmed case in Illinois,” she said.

The woman, in her 60s, returned from Wuhan, China—the city at the center of the outbreak—in mid-January. Her husband did not travel to China.

All those who had close contact with the woman were being monitored, and her husband began displaying symptoms in recent days. When he did, he was admitted to the hospital and placed in isolation.

Dr. Ezike said there are 21 individuals in Illinois who are considered “persons under investigation” for the virus, which is considered “novel” because not much is known about the new strain.

She said health officials are taking other actions to guard against the spread of the virus and they continue to work with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The virus is not spreading widely across the community at this time,” Ezike said.

The World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern after calling an emergency committee meeting Jan. 30.

A WHO situation report dated Jan. 30 said there are 7,818 confirmed global cases of the virus, with all but 82 cases in China. The virus has caused 170 deaths.

This week, the CDC advised Americans to avoid all nonessential travel to China.

The WHO urges the general public to take the same steps to protect against the virus that are taken against the flu.

This includes frequently washing hands with sanitizer or soap and water; covering one’s mouth when coughing or sneezing; avoiding close contact with anyone who has a fever and cough; and seeking medical care early when symptoms show. Those with symptoms should relay travel histories to their medical professionals.

Last week, the Independent brought its readers coverage of the Democratic candidates for U. S. House of Representatives in District #5. Presented this week are the Republican candidates seeking the party’s nomination for the Congressional seat, now held

by U. S. Rep. Mike Quigley. Quigley also faces Bill Burns, a challenger in the March 17 Primary on the Democratic ticket.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on Jan. 28 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. Two board members—Christopher Kocinski and Courtenae Trautmann—were absent from the meeting.

New synthetic turf at York approved Board members voted unanimously to approve the consent agenda, which included award the procurement, removal and installation of the new synthetic turf field at York High School’s stadium to FieldTurf for nearly $550,000. The project to install new turf at the stadium is part of the

district’s 2020 summer capital plan.

The district solicited pricing for the project through Sourcewell, a government agency that provides cooperative-contract purchasing solutions.

New roof at Bryan to cost nearly $90,000 The consent agenda also included awarding the re-roofing project at the district’s maintenance building at Bryan Middle School to Sterling Commercial Roofing of Sterling, Illinois, in the amount of nearly $90,000.

Sterling Commercial Roofing was one of eight roofing contractors to submit a bid for the project. The company submitted the lowest bid.

The district has worked with Sterling Commercial Roofing on several previous projects. The re-roofing project is part of the district’s 2020 summer capital plan.

On the subject of legal immigration, Hanson said he was “not for no walls or no boundaries.”

“I think the people who are coming to our country should get together and fight their own fight,” he said. “Imagine if you unlock your doors tonight and just let anyone come in. It’s the same thing – letting people watching your TV, eating your food. When we don’t protect our borders, we’re doing the same thing.

“We don’t have the money to take care of everybody in this world.”

Ladien had an idea regarding immigration.

“What’s being done with sanctuary cities in countries around the world has really helped with jobs and safety,” he said. “That’s what good science does. And $2- to $3- trillion a year would be able to accomplish that.”

He said he had a plan for clean energy. Ladien said Jack Welsh at General Electric had come up with clean renewable energy he says would work here in the U.S. and across the world.

“I have a simple equation that

would work,” he said. “For $2-$3 trillion, we could have programs that actually work.”

Asked for his thoughts about clean energy, Hanson indicated it was low on his list of priorities for the 5th District.

“We have a huge deficit for one thing,” he said. “I think we have much more pressing issues than clean power plants.”

Hanson believes the crime rate in Chicago is more necessary to address “in order to stop flash mobs and people who beat up and rob people.”

Hanson feels transportation in Chicago is “amazing,” second only to New York.

“The issue we have is crime,” he said. “People are getting beat up on public transportation, the trains and so forth, the problem is people aren’t making money.”

Ladien said, “many countries from Britain to China have shown how to use cameras to significantly reduce crime.” He also said to reduce traffic congestion, “there was technology for making islands that we could dredge from Lake Michigan and bypass downtown.”

Hanson said he was definitely pro-Trump because, he said, “Trump makes us think.”

Sandoval pleads guilty to bribery and tax fraud

Former state Sen. Martin Sandoval entered a plea deal Jan. 28 in which he admitted to receiving more than $250,000 in bribes over a three-year period and filing a false tax return.

In exchange for his plea, Sandoval agreed to cooperate with federal investigators in other ongoing investigations and he will not face sentencing until he is finished cooperating. That cooperation includes the possibility of testifying against other defendants who may be charged.

The plea deal was announced jointly by John R. Lausch Jr., U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, along with officials from the Chicago office of the FBI, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General.

The bribery charge stems largely from Sandoval’s relationship with a company that installs and operates red light cameras for local governments in the Chicago area. Those are devices that automatically photograph and issue citations to people who fail to come to a full stop at red lights. Revenue collected from those citations typically is split between the municipality and the camera company.

The plea agreement spells out a list of facts to which Sandoval has admitted. It includes an admission that, beginning in 2016, Sandoval solicited and received $20,000 in annual campaign contributions from an entity prosecutors referred to as “Company A,” but which is widely believed to be SafeSpeed LLC, a

company identified in a search warrant that federal agents executed on Sandoval’s Statehouse office in September.

The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times each reported that during Tuesday’s hearing in federal court, Sandoval inadvertently identified the company when he said, “I used my office as state senator to help SafeSpeed—er, company A ... (and) be its protector in the Illinois senate and influence other officials to roll out the red-light camera program in Illinois.”

In 2017, according to the agreement, Sandoval asked a company official to break up those annual payments into smaller amounts that would show up in different reporting periods.

“Kind of, just kind of not make it obvious,” Sandoval said to the company official, according to the agreement, not knowing that the person was cooperating with investigators.

In March 2018, according to the agreement, Sandoval accepted $10,000 in cash from the company, “to be used for campaign-related expenses,” in exchange for Sandoval’s promise to block legislation that would have banned red light cameras in Illinois.

And beginning in July 2018, according to the document, he solicited $5,000 per month in “protection money” for using his position in the General Assembly to protect the company’s interests.

During a July 31, 2018, meeting, Sandoval told the company official that he was aware other people were getting payoffs. The official confirmed that other people received a percentage of revenue that the red light cameras brought in.

The plea agreement also suggests Sandoval is suspected of corrupt activities that go beyond his relationship with the red light camera company, and that other public officials were involved.

It states that he “also engaged in corrupt activities with other public officials and accepted money from

other people in return for using his position as an Illinois state senator to attempt to benefit those people and their business interests. In total, (he) accepted over $250,000 in bribes as part of criminal activity that involved more than five participants.”

On the charge of tax fraud, the plea agreement states that for tax year 2017, Sandoval reported total income of $125,905 when in fact he had income that year of “at least

$259,255,” including more than $10,000 he received in bribes.

Sandoval, 56, of Chicago, resigned his 11th District Senate seat effective Jan. 1. He has since been succeeded by former Rep. Celina Villanueva, also of Chicago.

The plea agreement was announced on the opening day of the Illinois General Assembly’s 2020 session, where calls for significant ethics reforms are expected to be a major issue.

Fire Department named ‘Run of the Month’ by hospital’s EMS Selected for ‘proactive behavior’ rather than awaiting a call

Elmhurst Hospital’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has awarded its “Run of the Month” for Sept.Oct. 2019 to the Elmhurst Fire Department (EFD).

On Oct. 2, EFD Medic 2 crew members were in the Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Department (ED) finishing documentation for a previous call when the hospital was put on lockdown for a report of an active shooter in the parking lot outside the ED. After Elmhurst Police Department officers secured the scene, Medic 2 began treatment of a 65-year-old male patient, who had a gunshot wound. The crew transferred the patient to the ED for further evaluation and treatment. The patient later died from his wound.

This run was selected because of the proactive behavior to act instead of waiting for a call.

DuPage Care Center seeks donors for Valentine’s Day for residents For $2 donation, resident will receive heart with personal greetings The DuPage Care Center is offering the community an opportunity to send Valentine wishes to Center residents.

For a $2 donation, community members can send a large Valentine to a Care Center resident to spread cheer and best wishes. The Valentines will be 16-inch by 14-inch hearts with personal greetings written on them. The Care Center has previously offered balloons for purchase, but the change was made due to a worldwide shortage of helium.

Last year, the public sent more than 850 heart-shaped, helium balloons to line the corridors and rooms on Valentine’s Day. Volunteers and staff delivered the balloons to more than 350 residents living at the Center, brightening their days and bringing lots of smiles along the way.

“Every year we get more and more interest in this wonderful fundraiser, and it’s a great way to warm the hearts of the residents of the DuPage Care Center during the cold winter months,” said Pete DiCianni, Health and Human Services Committee Chairman, DuPage County Board.

The hearts will be delivered to residents on Friday, Feb. 14.

Funds from the sale of the hearts will benefit the Resident Recreation Fund, which provides programs and activities to improve the quality of life of residents living at the Center.

First Congregational recognizes long-time members

On Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019, First Congregational United Church of Christ at 235 S. Kenilworth Avenue honored Jean Schildbach and Bertha Hahn for their longtime participation and dedication to the Chancel Choir.

Collectively, they sang more than 130 years before retiring two years ago.

Gifts were presented during morning worship and the Chancel Choir sang one of their favorite anthems, “Fairest Lord Jesus”.

Jean became a member of the church in 1935, Bertha joined in 1954.

Both were active in many other areas of the church as well and still participate in Heritage meetings and Sunday worship.

A reception in the parlor followed worship. Posters were displayed with choir photos going back to the 1940’s along with a poem by Jean describing her years with the choir. Bertha’s biography was among the photos. Giving for youth

Hops for Humanity kicked off its sixth year by voting to donate its first quarter 2020 event collection to “Youth Outlook” a non-profit that supports LGBTQ youths in DuPage County.

League offers program on graduated income tax

After being introduced, Stephanie Wargin explained that “Youth Outlook” would use Hops for Humanity’s first quarter 2020 donation to help fund the “Safe. Supported. Celebrated.” Drop in centers for LGBTQ+ youth in DuPage County.

In the general election this November, Illinois citizens will decide if the state should replace its flat income tax with a graduated rate tax. The League of Women Voters of Elmhurst is having a presentation on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library to inform voters about the proposed new tax plan and how it will impact us.

This change requires amending the state constitution, something, which can only be done

by a majority vote of Illinois citizens. The “Fair Tax” graduated rate plan will be the top issue on the November ballot and for good reason. It will raise over $3 billion a year that can help to fund state and local government, schools and human services, and help the State address its backlog of unpaid bills.

IC Catholic Prep’s Gunther ties for 32nd at boys state bowling York boys basketball team regains conference lead

IC Catholic Prep freshman boys bowler Jacob Gunther had a spectacular finish to his inaugural high school season.

Gunther finished tied for 32nd in the state at the recent IHSA boys bowling state finals meet held at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon.

Gunther finished with a total pinfall of 2,529 and averaged 210.8 per game.

Of note, Gunther was fourth in the standings after the first day of competition thanks in part to an 819 series before the lunch break. Gunther came out of the gates on fire, shooting a 272 and then a 299, followed by

a 242 to close out the first part of the competition. During the first session another bowler rolled a perfect 300 game.

Gunther then had a high game of 235 after the lunch break.

He shot 601 and 515 series on the second day of competition, which included high games of 245 and 209.

Gunther reached the state finals by rolling a 1,251 series for six games and scooping up the third available state-qualifying bid for individual bowlers not on sectional teams. The sectional was held at Bowlero in Glendale Heights and was hosted by IC Catholic Prep.

Gunther made it to sectionals with a 1,105 series at the Hinsdale South regional. Gunther averaged a 184 for six games and was the seventh individual not on a team that qualified for the sectional.

IC Catholic Prep is graduating seniors Jack O’Brien, who rolled a

1,026 series at regionals and averaged a 171, Ian Rickert, who rolled an 848 and had a 141 average and Marc Shuflit who rolled a 940 series and averaged a 156.

Louis Narcisi had a 216 game at the regional, while junior Liam Dacre had a 546 series.

The Knights finished 10th at the regional as a team with a 4,691 pinfall.

York Boys Basketball The York boys basketball team’s defensive dominance continued in a big way once again.

The Dukes held West Suburban Conference Silver Division foe Lyons Township in the 30s in a 42-32 win.

The victory moved York to 22-3 overall and 7-1 in WSC Silver Division play.

With Oak Park-River Forest losing to Hinsdale Central last week, York

took over sole possession of first place in the conference. York’s only conference loss is to Central.

Nate Shockey led the Dukes with 20 points. Nick Hesch chipped in 10 points.

IC Catholic Prep Boys Basketball Despite missing several players due to a school retreat trip, the IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team easily defeated Schaumburg Christian 66-40 in non-conference action.

After playing to a 9-9 tie in the first quarter, the Knights took a 2823 lead into halftime and then went on a 36-5 blitz in the third quarter to blow the game open.

Dom Gaudio had a big game for the Knights with 26 points. John Hilgart added 15 points, all coming on 3-pointers. Antonio Richardson added 12 points and nine rebounds, while Chauncey Lee added six

points. Jake LaSpisa had five points.

IC Catholic Prep sank nine 3-pointers in the contest and improved to 15-9 on the season.

York Girls Basketball The York girls basketball team scored a 46-34 West Suburban Conference Silver Division win against Hinsdale Central in recent action.

York trailed 14-7 after the first quarter, but used a 20-4 run in the second quarter to go up 27-18 at halftime. York held Hinsdale Central to six points (2 buckets) in the third quarter.

Sara Krissinger led the Dukes with 13 points. She hit one 3-pointer and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

York hit 11 of 13 foul shots in the contest.

Carley Schwartz had nine points on three 3-pointers, while Sydney Molis had seven points (1 three-pointer) and Sydney Fuglsang added six points.

Timothy Christian boys basketball team puts the defensive clamps on opponents Trojans stingy in wins against Stagg and Ridgewood

A hallmark of the Timothy Christian boys basketball team’s recent long winning streak has been its defense, particularly in a two-game stretch against Stagg and Ridgewood.

Those two wins pushed the team’s winning streak to eight in a row, jumped its overall record to 17-3, and the Ridgewood win kept the Trojans alone in first place in the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division at 7-0.

“A little but of what we have been doing well has been consistently getting stops on defense,” Timothy coach

Scott Plaisier explained. “In both of those games in the third and fourth quarters we were able to string together a number of stops. We had 15 out of 16 possessions in the one game where we had a stop in the third and fourth quarters, and it was similar with 16 of 17 possessions resulting in a stop in the other game. It’s a definite positive when you are consistently able to stop the other team. Even if you are able to score a little bit, doing that usually is conducive to being successful.”

Plaisier said the defensive wizardry has come from a mixture of formations. “We have been able to play a mix of man and use an aggressive zone,” he explained. “The guys have responded well and are buying into the love of playing defense.”

Plaisier said Josh Harris and Ben VanderWal have been keys in the zone scheme. “When we go zone those

guys are two leaders and are at the center of it and that allows our wings Zach Orange and AJ Vos to be more aggressive knowing that the middle is solid.”

Plaisier added the offensive end of the game has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. “Offensively, it goes in spurts,” he said. “We’re not as consistent as I would like us to be. We haven’t had a game where we have shot the ball really well, but the guys are resilient and we find ways to still attack the rim and get buckets in transition to make up for it. We haven’t shot it particularly well from the perimeter.

We did have seven 3s against Stagg, which was nice to see. It’s the most we’ve had in a month and a half.

Timothy has away games against Chicago Christian and Westmont in the league this week, plus a big non-conference game at Benet Acad-

emy on Saturday.

“The boys really like to compete,” said Plaisier. “We know this will be a tough week coming up. They show up to practice and they want to get better.

We are going to try and continue to improve on things. We are not satisfied in the spot we are at. We want to continue to prove we can play good basketball, but overall, I am very pleased with the boys.”

In the 60-40 win over Ridgewood, Timothy led only 20-16 after the first quarter, but held Ridgewood to eight total points in the second and third quarters combined, and then poured in 22 points in the final quarter for good measure.

VanderWal, only a sophomore, had 14 points. Orange and Harris each had 10 points, while Matt Owens and Vos rounded out a balanced scoring effort with eight points each. The Trojans

also shot 13 of 14 from the free-throw line with Harris (5 of 5) and Owens (4 of 4) being perfect from the stripe.

VanderWal had seven rebounds, while Harris had six. Ben Jones had five assists, while Owens had four.

Owens also had three steals and VanderWal rejected a pair of shots.

In the 64-42 win over Stagg, Timothy held its opponent to 14 total points in the final two quarters, while scoring 37 points to break open a game that saw Stagg lead 28-27 at intermission.

Harris exploded for 23 points in the game, while Owens had 19 and VanderWal had 14. Owens made three 3-pointers, while Harris and VanderWal each hit two. Timothy shot 11for-15 from the free-throw line. Vos led the team with seven rebounds, while Owens had six assists. Vos had four steals, while Harris had three steals.

Schuringa a force for Timothy Christian girls basketball team

Timothy Christian junior girls basketball star Hannah Schuringa remembers a talk she had freshman season.

“I’ve been on varsity since freshman year and I remember the very beginning of the season the coaches talked to me about the 1,000-point club and how I might be able to get there someday,” she said.

Someday ended up happening rather quickly for the 6-0 forward who recently went over that key scoring milestone with a year-plus to spare.

“The fact I got it this year is great,” she said. “It’s reassuring as a player that hard work pays off, and I still have another year ahead of me.”

Schuringa said she’s had plenty of help with her game along the way.

“It’s all the different coaches I have had,” she said.

“Ever since fifth grade I would go to the Saturday morning open gym (famously run by former Timothy teachers and coaches Ken Huizenga

and George Bosman) and work on fundamentals. That’s a big part of it.

My older sister (Olivia) played basketball at Timothy and I grew up watching her. This is also because of all my teammates and parents who have supported me and cheered me on every game.”

When asked to give a self-assessment of her improvement on the floor, Schuringa said she’s taken on a different mindset. “I’m a little more aggressive and am I tougher player than I was freshman year,” said Schuringa, who leads Timothy in scoring at 17.1 points per game, while shooting 58 percent from the field (on 316 shot attempts).

“Even last year I was still a little timid and shy. Now I am not afraid to go up against bigger and stronger girls. I’m not afraid to take the open shot and if I am not comfortable with that, I’ll go ahead and take the ball to the hoop. I want to keep getting better at driving to the basket and taking little jump shots and being able to make those more regularly.”

Schuringa, who also is averaging 5.8 rebounds per game, said this season has been a blast, not only because of the winning the team has done, but because of the strong bond the team has

formed. “We have a really strong team friendship-wise,” she said. “We get along really well outside of basketball.

That is a big factor because there is no team drama. We have done a good job of welcoming in the underclassmen on the team. We have a couple freshmen playing on varsity. At the very beginning of the season, the coaches made it clear that no matter your age or grade level, we’re all equal. That was a big factor. Our coaches have been great.

They push us to be better and not settle for anything less.”

While Timothy, which was 20-5 overall through late last week, remains engrossed in the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division race (111 through late last week) and have a No. 1 sub-sectional seed in the Class 2A Chicago Orr sectional, Schuringa said a shorter-term focus is a must.

“We aren’t looking that far ahead,” she said. “(This week) we have three really tough games that we have to really focus on right now. It’s one game at a time right now.”

Timothy has a critical MSC Red game tonight in Aurora against Aurora Christian, which is the only team to have beaten the Trojans in conference thus far.

York hockey team floods SHL academic all-conference team with players Eleven Dukes cited for classroom excellence; Team improving on ice under direction of Kapsalis

The York hockey team has taken the student part of student-athlete to heart this season.

The Dukes recently learned 11 of their players earned a spot on the Scholastic Hockey League academic all-conference team.

Consideration for placement on the team requires a player to have above a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average.

York had a total of seven seniors make the all-academic list. That group includes Will Ciannella, Tyler Gelsomino, Nathan Kriz, Bradley Lynch, Charlie McPherson, Declan Quinn and Jackson Timble.

Juniors academic standouts are James Millins and Thomas We-

solowski, while sophomore Troy Walker made the list, as did freshman Frank Nicosia.

York coach Marc Kapsalis praised his players for their efforts in the classroom and on the ice.

“Hockey has, by far, the longest season of any high school sport,” the coach pointed out. “Our team plays more than 50 games in a season that spans five to six months. They bring their passion, energy and love of the sport to the rink every time they come. We want our players to strive for excellence in all they do. To see them honored for their hard work in the classroom couldn’t make us more proud.”

Kapsalis was a four-sport athlete at York and went on to play NCAA Division I hockey at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

“York is and has always been a great school,” he said. “It provides the families of Elmhurst a tremendous, well-rounded educational opportunity for their high school-age kids. The York High School and Elmhurst communities should be really

proud of how these York players represent them throughout the Chicagoland area.”

On the ice, the Dukes have made steady progress this season. After sputtering out of the gates at 9-19,

the Dukes are 7-7-1 over their last 15 contests and 4-2 in their last six games in league action. Kapsalis noted York has faced the third-toughest schedule in the state. York is currently ranked 17th out of 87 high school

hockey teams in Illinois.

York will play in a tournament at Notre Dame before starting the Illinois state playoffs in mid-February.

Kapsalis said York likely will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

When asked his thoughts on recently eclipsing the 1,000-career point mark, York boys basketball senior standout Nate Shockey quickly deflected the credit.

“It does mean a lot, but all the credit goes to my coaches and teammates,” he said. “They have stuck with me through all of these years. They are the ones who drew up the plays and helped me get open.”

Shockey, who will continue his career at the collegiate level at Division I North Dakota, also stressed that particular number is not the one he is overly concerned with. “It’s good to have that your senior year, but that’s not the ultimate goal,” he said. “We want to win championships here.”

Shockey became the third player in the last two years to go over the 1,000-point mark at York, joining former teammates Nick Kosich (now at Benedictine University in Lisle) and Erik Cohn (now at Trinity Christian in Palos Heights). “That’s pretty crazy,” he said.

“Nick and Erik last year got 1,000 and they told me that I was next. I laughed at it and said, ‘We will see.’ After I found out in the Proviso West game I was kind of in shock. It goes to show you all the hard work pays off.”

Shockey also took a moment to reflect on the progress he’s made since being a freshman. “Honestly, it’s surreal,” he said. “It’s like a dream come true. Back then I didn’t see myself in the position I am in today. For me, I am truly blessed.”

Shockey is part of another strong York team under the direction of veteran coach Vince Doran. “I haven’t been able to put my thumb on it yet,” he said when asked what the key ingredient is to the team’s success. “Defense has been the No. 1 most consistent part of our team game. Some nights we might not be hitting shots or finishing layups like we should, but we do play good defense and that throws teams out of sorts. We also rebound well.”

This year’s York team, Shockey added, is defined by the relationships that have been developed. “The camaraderie off the court is great,” he said. “It’s nice to win games and play a lot of minutes, but it comes down to making friends on and off the court. That happens through things such as team dinners and the bonding that happens from being around these guys for months at a time.”

Now, York turns its attention to the home stretch of the season that includes an intense finish to the West Suburban Conference Silver Division portion of the schedule.

“Obviously we want to try and win out the rest of the regular season and win the conference championship and then go on and win a regional and a sectional and keep going,” he said.

Chicago carjacker receives 20-year sentence Second of two men pleads guilty to armed robbery, vehicular hijacking

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Wednesday, Jan. 29, that a Chicago man accused of following a Wheaton couple on their way home and stealing their car at gunpoint has been sentenced to 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).

Phillip Smith, 28, appeared in court in front of Judge John Kinsella, where he entered a plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Vehic-

ular Hijacking (Class X Felony).

Following his plea, Judge Kinsella handed down Smith’s 20-year sentence. On May 7, 2019, Smith’s accomplice, Carlos Moore, 28, also of Chicago, was sentenced to 21 years in the IDOC following his plea of guilty to one count of Aggravated Robbery with a Firearm (Class X Felony).

On Feb. 22, 2017, at approximately 10:10 p.m., Moore, Smith and one unnamed accomplice followed

a Wheaton couple as they drove to their home. When the couple pulled into their garage, Moore, Smith and the accomplice pulled their vehicle into the driveway behind them.

Moore and Smith, wearing masks, then got out of their vehicle, pointed a gun at the wife and demanded the keys to their vehicle. The wife gave her entire purse to Moore and then he, Smith and the accomplice stole the couple’s vehicle. A short time later, officers spotted the stolen ve-

hicle but eventually lost the vehicle following a high-speed chase. The vehicle was later located in a Chicago parking lot. An investigation into the incident, conducted by the Wheaton Police Department, led authorities to Moore and Smith. The third individual allegedly involved in the robbery has yet to be identified.

“This afternoon, Mr. Smith learned that he will be joining his partner behind bars for his role in

the hijacking of an innocent couple’s car,” Berlin said. “While we are very grateful that no one was injured that evening, I’m sure the entire incident was very traumatic for the victims.

The sentences handed down to Mr. Smith and Mr. Moore will send the message to any would-be carjackers that this type of violent crime will not be tolerated in DuPage County.”

Both men will be required to serve 50% of their sentence before being eligible for parole.

Illinois ethics laws among the weakest in the nation Government reform advocates told a panel of state lawmakers Jan. 30 that Illinois has some of the weakest governmental ethics rules in the country and that lawmakers should put more teeth into them if they hope to regain the trust of the public.

“For me, the disheartening part of all of it is not that so many lawmakers at all levels of government have strayed so far from the rules and have overshadowed the good work of ethical lawmakers, but that so many across our state kind of react to this news with a shrug,” said Georgia Logothetis, assistant director of the watchdog group Common Cause Illinois.

“It’s a kind of disheartened acceptance that, well, this is just the way things work in Illinois.”

Logothetis was part of a panel of reform advocates who testified before the Joint Commission on Ethics and Lobbying Reform. The commission was formed last year in the wake of federal investigations that led to indictments against three sitting state lawmakers, two of whom have since resigned.

The Jan. 30 hearing, the third since the panel was formed, focused on the state’s Governmental Ethics Act, and specifically its provisions dealing with conflicts of interest and financial disclosure requirements.

While some states specifically prohibit lawmakers and other public officials from acting on issues in which they have a direct financial interest, Illinois has no such provision.

In fact, the only thing the Illinois law says about conflicts of interest is that when they arise, lawmakers “should consider the possibility of eliminating the interest causing the conflict.”

“If that is not feasible,” the statute continues, “he should consider the possibility of abstaining from such official action.”

Marie Dillon, policy director for the Better Government Association, a Chicago-based advocacy group, said that law was the result of a 1965 study commission that initially recommended mandatory rules, along with penalties and public reporting for violators.

Those suggestions were rejected by lawmakers at the time.

“So, we ended up with a law that leaves it up to individual legislators to decide if they have a conflict of

interest and, if so, what to do about it,” Dillon said. “As a taxpayer, I have to say emphatically, that’s not good enough.”

Nicholas Birdsong, a policy specialist for the National Conference of State Legislatures, said conflict of interest laws vary widely among the states. He said 35 states require lawmakers to recuse themselves from votes in which they have a conflict of interest and 13 states, including Illinois, leave the decision up to the lawmaker.

In Tennessee, where the rules are different in each chamber, the state House has a mandatory recusal policy and the state Senate has a discretionary policy. Utah, Birdsong said, requires legislators to vote if they are present, regardless of whether they have a conflict.

Birdsong said some states have adopted the idea that lawmakers should be able to vote, even if they have a conflict of interest, because “legislators are elected and they’re obligated to vote according to the will of their constituents regardless of whether or not it serves or hurts their interest, and so having these sort of mandatory recusal rules essentially limits their ability to do their jobs.”

Many of those testifying Jan. 30 also called for updating and expanding the Statement of Economic Interests forms that public officials in Illinois are required to fill out.

“The interesting thing about this document to me is, I’m not sure it adequately assesses what the interests are,” said Brad Cole, executive director of the Illinois Municipal League.

As an example, Cole pointed to one question on the form that asks what other units of government the person filing the form has worked for in the preceding year.

“It doesn’t say what you do for that unit of government, and that makes me wonder what is the interest,” he said. “If you are employed, what are you doing? What is the interest that you might have with the unit of government.”

Other questions on the form ask filers to identify the names of businesses in which they have an ownership interest; the names of professional organizations in which they are an officer or director; the nature of any professional services they rendered for which they were paid more than $5,000; the identity of significant capital assets they own; and the name of

any lobbyist with whom they have a “close economic association.”

Others pointed out that people filling out the form do not have to disclose outstanding debts or credits, any real estate holdings they may have

other than their home, or how much income they derive from sources that might present a conflict of interest.

Mazzochi, Glowiak Hilton appreciate Governor’s pledge to fight corruption

The project transitioned the Village of Bartlett smoothly from an Elgin water supply to Lake Michigan water provided by the DuPage Water Commission (DWC) and was a model in partnership.

The $20 million project was completed on time and 17% less than the Village’s initial budgeting estimates. The valves were turned officially on May 16, 2019, introducing Lake Michigan water to all Bartlett’s 41,000 residents.

Indigo Ensemble to perform at Bethel Bethel United Church of Christ will present a riveting performance by the acclaimed Indigo Ensemble on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m., as part of the church’s Music at Bethel concert series.

The afternoon concert will feature Music at Bethel’s artistic director and pianist Jeffrey Panko, violinist Jennifer Leckie, violist Uli Widmaier and cellist Anna Walker, playing beloved piano quartets of Mozart, Mahler and Fauré.

Pieces performed will include the Mahler Piano Quartet in A minor, 1st movement, Mozart Piano Quartet in E-flat major, K.493 and Fauré Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 15.

Violinist Jennifer Leckie is a member of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, the chamber ensembles Crossing Borders Music, as well as the Grant Street String Quartet.

Dr. Leckie has performed as soloist with the Elgin Symphony, the Danville Symphony and the College of DuPage Symphony.

Violist Uli Widmaier was born in Germany, studied violin at the conservatory in Munich and took master classes with Henryk Szeryng, Nathan Mironovich Milstein and Ruggiero Ricci. Widmaier was previously concertmaster of the Brown University Orchestra, and is currently principal violist in several Chicagoland orchestras.

Cellist Anna Walker earned degrees in Cello Performance from the Hartt School of Music and DePaul University. In particular, Walker enjoys sharing the many ways that music can inspire others. She has served as a music volunteer at two mental health facilities, Hartgrove Behavioral Health and Riveredge Hospital.

Struggles with the weight of the English language

Something about a new year (or decade) gets me focused on the English language. I’m not sure why.

Normal people focus on indoor exercise and weight loss during the winter months.

I think about words and the heaviness they can cause when used in a redundant manner. Heavy phrases are like extra weight on this hips – unwanted, unwarranted and unneeded. I don’t want to come across as preachy. I realize the English language is an ominous and arduous beast. Still, when desiring to master something one must focus on the details. Shall we get started?

Let’s take the phrase “first ever.” If something is the first, it goes without saying that it is the first ever. “Ever” is a waste of four letters. It’s our first trip to the ocean, not our first ever.

First, in itself, is enough by itself.

Drop the ever. Forever.

The same goes for “first annual.”

You can’t have an annual party or picnic or celebration if you’ve only had it once. The first event is an

again. No. We had to run the race over. Or, we had to run the race again. One or the other, but not both.

By Mantra: cut out the fat.

“Each” or “every” take your pick but only choose one. Did he look at each inaugural one, not annual (yet), even Valentine card or every Valentine card? The term “each and every” is if you plan to have it for years to redundant and no one wants to be come. redundant. It can be really, really, The only first annual you can technically host or have is the second really annoying.

Equally aggravating, is the use of annual. I’m a stickler, I know. But where is the beauty of language if not the word “choice.” When a person has to decide between two things, in the intricacies of the details?

Another redundancy: “once again.” it’s often described as having two choices. Not true. There are two Again, you can stick with “again.” options, but only one choice. If I can We couldn’t find the car keys so pick a red or blue car, I have two went inside to look again (not once again). Save yourself five letters and options from which to pick, but only one choice to make. one whole word and you still have Which brings us to the “could the same message. I’ll finish up with the distinction between “that” and “who.” This one gets a little gray for me. When I write about my pets and their personalities, I’m tempted to use “who,” because they are like little people to me, but technically animals are referred to as “that.” “Who” is reserved and preferred for references to people, although “that” is okay in a pinch.

The dog that ate my shoes. The man who borrowed my shoes.

While we’re chatting about “that,” the darn word can be deleted in many instances. But not always.

Complicated, I know. When in

doubt, read your sentence aloud both ways – with “that” and without.

If no meaning is lost, delete. Two examples: 1. It’s possible that I’ll be late. 2. I whispered that I’d be late. Which needs “that?” There’s no cut and dried answer, but sentence number two (in my humble opinion) benefits from “that.” Sentence number one can do without.

And with that, I’ll step down from my soapbox and focus on more important things, like the upcoming bathing suit season and the fact that my bathroom scale will once again be used for the first ever time since last fall, being that I haven’t paid enough attention to the two choices I have of being healthy or eating junk food, which is a struggle for me each and every day.
