Hospital’s ‘Run of the Month’ honor presented to Elmhurst Fire Department

Elmhurst Hospital’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has awarded its “Run of the Month” for July-Aug. 2018 to the Elmhurst Fire Dept. The department was recognized at a special thank-you breakfast held in their honor on Thursday, Feb. 7 at the hospital.

Medic #1, Rescue #1 and Engine #2 were recognized for the outstanding care they administered on Aug. 26, 2018 to a 59-year-old man, who was experiencing chest pains.

Upon arrival at the Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Department, the man became unresponsive. The pa-

tient was defibrillated and CPR was started, after which he became alert and was talking. He was able to be released from the hospital five days later.

In the “Run of the Month” program, Elmhurst Hospital’s EMS Team reviews ambulance runs by pre-hospital

providers and selects one to be recognized based on the following criteria: • Excellent communication from the field that resulted in the timely delivery of pertinent clinical information to the Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Department staff; • Clear and thorough documenta-

tion; • Superior clinical assessment skills that resulted in accurate recognition of a clinical situation; • Behavior exceeding the call of duty in the field; and, • Superior partnership and teamwork with Elmhurst Hospital.

D205 joins National Innovation & Transformational Leadership Network Redefines how students learn, provides better opportunities

District 205 (D205) is one of 40 schools nationwide invited to join the National Innovation & Transformational Leadership Network. The Network is hosted by the American Association of School Administrators and the Successful Practices Network, an arm of the International Center for Leadership in Education. The D205 Innovation Team is comprised of Superintendent Dr. David Moyer; Jim Collins, chair of the Learning and Teaching Committee; Dr. Mark Cohen, assistant superintendent for innovation and growth; Heidi Thomas, principal of Field Elementary; and, Frank Dahlman, English department chair at Sandburg Middle School.

Started last fall, the cohort is a yearlong experience during which superintendents and their leadership teams are supported to apply innovative best practices toward redefining what it means to be successful in school.

“The top three characteristics of innovative districts from across the country based on the research of the Successful Practices Network, are that they all have a system of standards based reporting, focus on personalized learning, and commit to tending to the behavioral health of their young learners.”

Building on the success of innovative classes like “Project Lead The Way,” which blends real-world, project-based, applied learning experiences with the core subjects at the middle school level, the Innovation Team has identified the area of interdisciplinary learning as an innovation priority. In the next school year, District 205 will

The American Dream awards ranged from four years’ room and board to stipends that will cover the cost of books and other materials.

The winners were announced during an awards ceremony in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel attended by many of the 155 students who entered the contest, along with several hundred mothers, fathers, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends.

To enter, students were asked to submit a video on the topic “As a first-generation student, what would graduating from college mean to you and your family?”

In her video, Yearout talked about how her father’s death, when she was only 11, and her grandfather’s support inspired her to excel in high school and discover her passion for teaching young children. Graduating from college as a first-generation student “would showcase everything my grandpa ever wished for me, and the person my father would’ve hoped to see me become,” she said.

“It would show what kind of person I really want to strive to be.”

The names and videos of the other winners are: • Christopher Perez, of Northlake (West Leyden High School), who plans to major in music education, will receive a stipend to cover four years of room and board.

• Jessica Jones of Hillside (Proviso Math & Science Academy), who plans to major in sociology, will re-

ceive a Beck’s Books stipend to cover the annual cost of books and other materials.

• Auri Martinez, of Chicago (Phoenix Military Academy), who plans to major in psychology and pursue occupational therapy, also will receive a Beck’s Books stipend.

All of the students who entered the competition will receive a $1,000 annual American Dream Grant to attend Elmhurst College.

The contest was open to all first-generation college students who have been admitted to Elmhurst College for the fall of 2019.

Four men accused of breaking into Lombard apartment

Following alleged robbery, suspects lead high-speed chase thru Villa Park, Elmhurst

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton have announced that bond has been set for Mashawn Barnes, 27, of Chicago; Kevin Jones, 31, of Chicago; Calvert Williams, 29, of Matteson; and Dion Young, 20, of Chicago, who appeared in bond court where Judge Kavita Athanikar set bond at $2 million with 10 percent to apply for all four men.

All four men have been charged with one count of armed robbery (Class X felony). In addition, Williams, Jones and Barnes have been charged with one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Young also has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon, and Barnes also has been charged with one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding.

Because the crime was allegedly committed with a gun, sentencing requires a 15-year add on, making the defendants eligible for a penalty of between 21 and 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections if found guilty.

At approximately 3:35 p.m. last Friday, Lombard police officers were dispatched to an apartment on Foxworth Boulevard in response to an armed robbery that had just occurred.

It is alleged that as the victim and her daughter entered their apartment building, two men, armed and wearing masks, entered the building before the door closed. It is alleged that the men pointed a gun at the back of both the woman’s and her daughter’s heads and ordered the victim to take them to her apartment. It is further alleged that once inside the apartment, the men tied up the woman and another occupant who was

The men then allegedly stole money, a handgun and other items from the apartment before fleeing in a vehicle waiting in the parking lot.

The female victim was able to free herself, call police and identify the vehicle in which the men allegedly fled. It is alleged that as the men fled, Lombard officers responding to the call observed the vehicle in which the men allegedly fled and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

The defendant’s vehicle allegedly did not stop and accelerated away rapidly reaching speeds of up to 75 mph on a 35 mph portion of Roosevelt Road. Following a chase that involved the Lombard, Elmhurst and Villa Park Police Department, the vehicle came to a stop near Villa Av-

enue and North Avenue where it was involved in two separate crashes.

It is alleged that four men then fled the vehicle. Mashawn Barnes was apprehended just north of the abandoned vehicle while the other three men were apprehended without incident in a wooded area nearby.

“The terror allegedly caused by these men—forcing their way at gunpoint into an innocent woman’s apartment, tying up their victims and stealing money, other items of value and a gun before fleeing is almost unimaginable,” Berlin said. “Following this, the men then allegedly led police on a high-speed chase during rush hour showing a complete and utter lack of respect for law enforcement and for the lives of countless motorists. Thankfully, no

one was injured either at the apartment or on the streets.

“I would like to thank the Lombard, Elmhurst and Villa Park Police Departments for their work in quickly apprehending the suspects in this case.”

“The brazen actions and use of high-powered weapons allegedly used in the commission of this crime and subsequent high-speed chase put many innocent lives in danger,” Newton said. “Thankfully, our officers were able to bring the suspects into custody before anyone was hurt.”

The cases against all four men have been assigned to Judge Miller. Their next court appearance is scheduled for March 18 for arraignment.

Obituaries Martha was a private person, but fun-loving with a mischievous sense of humor and a competitive nature.

She enjoyed family games, team bowling, and her natural ability in golf earned her a hole-in-one, and many trophies at Sugar Creek, twice at state level.

Epiphany Lutheran Church was the family’s place of worship, where for many years where Martha was an active member in various women’s circles and was a Sunday School Teacher. She and her friend Marge Swanson served as “Den Mothers” when their boys were in Cub Scouts. She also brought an appreciation of art into her chil-

dren’s classrooms. Martha had a love for all animals, especially cats and birds. Bird-watching became a pleasurable pastime for her and Bob in later years.

Christopher Glass & Aluminum hosts life-saving training for employees Christopher Glass & Aluminum, Inc., in partnership with the Elmhurst Fire Department and Elmhurst Hospital, trained more than 60 of their staff in “Hands-Only CPR” and “Stop the Bleed: Bleeding Control for the Injured” at their corporate headquarters in Elmhurst.

This training included instruction in activating EMS, Hands-Only CPR, how to identify life-threatening bleeding, compression with direct pressure on the wound, use of a tourniquet, and wound packing. Each participant was able to practice these life saving techniques on mannequins and a training apparatus.

“As a manufacturer and fabricator of glass and metal products for the construction industry, it is imperative that our employees understand and practice preventative safety measures that meet or exceed OSHA standards,” said Steven Schwartz, Health and Safety Coordinator for the company. “In case there is an incident which would require immediate intervention to save someone’s

life, we felt it necessary to train as many of our employees as possible in CPR and in ‘Stop the Bleed.’”

Disorderly conduct

Feb. 19 Police said officers responded to the area of the train depot in the 100 block of W. First to the report of a subject stumbling and talking to himself. According to police, Kevin L. Mitchell, 32, of Chicago, was located on the train tracks, was heavily intoxicated and unable to care for himself. He was issued citations for disorderly conduct-public intoxication and possession of open alcohol.

Feb. 18 Police said officers responded to a business in the 100 block of N. York at around 6:25 p.m. for a report of a group of four males who entered the business. One of the males reportedly began yelling at the clerk that the business owes him money. While attempting to locate the four males, it was learned they also walked into a bar in the same location. While there, one of the males reportedly yelled and swore, stating that the business owed him money. The unnamed suspect was located and cited for disorderly conduct.

Feb. 15 A 50-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 400 block of Butterfield at around 8:18 a.m. Police said they were met at the door by a victim and observed a large area of redness along the left side of his face; specifically along the cheek and neck. The victim related that the suspect slapped his face during an argument. The suspect, according to police, admitted to slapping the victim.

A 27-year-old Chicago man was charged with two counts of domestic battery and one count of battery in the 900 block of Riverside at around 1:23 a.m. Police said a front desk employee at a hotel in the above location advised that he could see on surveillance cameras that the suspect was hitting a female in the hallway. In addition, the caller advised the suspect hit another male who may have been trying to assist the female. Both incidents were caught on camera.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication

Feb. 19 A juvenile suspect was charged with DUI, possession of alcohol by a minor, possession of tobacco products by a minor and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Michigan and Crestview at around 10:04 p.m. and released on bond to his parents.

Feb. 17 Danielle Solis, 23, of Glendale Heights, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and West at around 1:57 a.m.

Feb. 16 Luis Garcia, 22, of Northlake, was charged with DUI drugs, possession of cannabis and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 1:39 a.m.

Phillip Tuzzalino, 35, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and I-290 at around 11:19 p.m.

Endangering the life of a child

Feb. 18 Kimberly Vitek, 55, of Westchester, was charged with two counts of endangering the life of a child, obstructing identification and criminal trespass to a vehicle in the 800 block of S. Cedar at around 10:45 a.m. Police said officers responded to the report of Vitek having entered a complainant’s vehicle without permission According to police, Vitek was located and provided a false name to an officer.

It was learned that she left a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old unattended, police said.

Feb. 20 Cody A. Alexander, 22, of Springfield, Ill., a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 1:15 a.m.

Fernando Gallegos, 20, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 8:23 p.m.

Diana L. Peralta-Roman, 24, of Addison, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a suspicious vehicle investigation in the 300 block of Commonwealth at around 9:28 p.m.

Police said school staff at York High School advised at 10:10 a.m. that there was an odor of cannabis coming from a student. The student admitted to possessing a vape device containing cannabis THC oil and to smoking cannabis in a school bathroom. A search of the student’s backpack produced two additional vape car-

A juvenile at York High School admitted to purchasing a vape pen containing cannabis THC oil and was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. A second juvenile admitted to selling the vape pen and was found to be in possession of two vape devices and a vape cartridge containing cannabis THC oil. The second juvenile will be referred to juvenile probation for the charges of delivery of cannabis on school grounds, sale of tobacco products to/ from minors, possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both juveniles were released to their respective parents.

Feb. 17 Joseph Allen, 18, of Lombard, was charged with possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended, and operating a vehicle with suspended registration subsequent to a license plate check near Roosevelt at York at around 4:49 a.m.

Omar Meraz, 25, of Brookfield, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to observing a suspicious vehicle in the 700 block of N. Larch at around 1:21 a.m.

Jessie Rivera, 31, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, one headlight and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Route 83 at around 4:46 a.m.

Feb. 16 Ivanka Christiano-Pavic, 23, of Chicago, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near North at Clinton at around 5;19 p.m.

Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital to the report of a suspicious subject.

The reporting officer spoke to hospital security, who stated they observed Kyle Forgue, 24, of Villa Park, allegedly attempt to steal a wheelchair and a cup of yogurt. Police said a search of Forgue yielded suspected cocaine, heroin and drug paraphernalia. Forgue was charged with two felony charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Gaetano Traversa, 29, of Roselle, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, driving while license revoked, no rear registration plate light and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and York at around 10:49 p.m.

Olivia Wojcik, 30, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Willow and Columbia at around 1:29 a.m.

Kira Zelaya-Felde, 20, of Bensenville, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of cannabis, illegal transportation of alcohol, possession of false identification, unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor, unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor and driving while under 21 with a blood-alcohol content of over .00 subsequent to a motorist assist near Willow and North at around 12:05 a.m.

sion of a controlled substance and possession of cannabis, while Jahmal Ross, 23, of Elmhurst, was charged with speeding, obstruction of justice, possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, possession of drug equipment, illegal transportation of alcohol and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Lake Street at around 10:31 p.m.

Feb. 14 A staff member at York High School reported an odor of cannabis coming from a classroom at around 8:33 a.m. Subsequent to a search, a partially smoked cannabis blunt was located inside the backpack of a subject, who admitted the cannabis belonged to him and was issued a citation for possession of cannabis. The subject was released to a parent.

Suspicious circumstances

Feb. 17 Police said the complainant, a bartender at a pub in the 100 block of N. Addison, told police he was informed by the previous bartender that a suspect was talking to himself a lot and got to a point where he was asked to leave.

The suspect reportedly became upset, began yelling and threatened to kill the complainant.

The suspect was served a no trespass notice and left the bar.

Police said officers responded to a disturbance in the 100 block of Adelaide at around 2:05 a.m. Upon arrival, police said the suspect was intoxicated and had a swollen hand, while the victim had a bloody nose and stated his friend (the suspect) was intoxicated and wanted to drive home. The victim stopped him and they reportedly began to fight. Neither party wished to pursue complaints and both were released from the scene.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Feb. 19 A complainant in the 200 block of W. Wrightwood told police at around 8:38 a.m. that a business received a special order of caulk to be shipped to New Jersey. The transaction was found to be fraudulent and the payment was cancelled. The business is now at a loss for the cost of shipping, the return of the product and 3,000 tubes of a special-order product.

July 1, 2018-Feb. 19 Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of E. Harrison. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) has been using her credit card account since last July. The victim suffered no dollar loss and the credit card was cancelled.

Feb. 18 Retail theft was reported at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at around 2:12 p.m.

A complainant reported than an unknown male suspect took several Oil of Olay products and walked out of the store without paying.

Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of N. Emery Lane at around 3:17 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used her personal information to open a fraudulent account through Version Wireless. The suspect purchased four iPhones and activated four corresponding phone lines.

Feb. 17 Kevin Espinoza, 27, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for theft and issued a no trespass notice at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:25 p.m. Police said officers determined that Espinoza had removed price tags from clothing, put the clothing on, and then left the store without paying. Total value of the clothing items is $115.55.

Residential burglary was reported in the 500 block of W. Crockett Ave. at around 10:58 a.m. A victim told police that a suspect described as a male with an olive complexion, approximately 30 years old with a medium build posed as a utility worker and asked the victim to join him in the basement while he looked for the home’s water pipes.

Meanwhile, a second suspect entered a bedroom and removed a combination safe.

Jan. 16-Feb. 7 A victim in the 100 block of S. Cottage Hill told police at around 1:47 p.m. that he sent a check for payment into Discover Card. When contacted, Discover Card stated the check was never received, and the victim discovered the check was deposited into another account. An investigation is pending.

Feb. 16 A victim in the 300 block of W. Lake told police at around 8:02 p.m. that a suspect described as a black male stole the keys to his vehicle and subsequently stole the vehicle. Security footage shows the suspect unlocking the vehicle remotely and driving it off the property. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen.

Feb. 13 Theft was reported at a restaurant in the 600 block of W. North at around 12:59 p.m. A victim told police that a suspect stole a Samsung tablet from the front counter of the restaurant. The suspect was seen on camera removing the tablet and hiding it under his sweatshirt before exiting the restaurant. The tablet was later returned and the victim stated they did not want to pursue charges.

Jan. 12 Theft was reported in the 500 block of E. Park at around 4:10 p.m. A victim told police that a suspect was holding onto his immigration card and would not return it. The victim contacted the suspect who stated he would hand over the card when the victim signs over one half of a building they own in Northlake.

The victim was advised by the concert venue that the tickets she purchased were fraudulent.

Glowiak joins fight for fair maps in Illinois State Senator Suzy Glowiak (D-Western Springs) is supporting the fight for fair maps in Illinois.

Glowiak signed on as a sponsor of Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 4, which removes the General Assembly and governor from the redistricting process and requires legislative maps to be drawn by an independent, 16-member Commission.

“This measure promotes a just and transparent process to ensure the people of Illinois have a voice in the manner legislative maps are established,” she said. “Removing politicians from the process will put a stop to gerrymandering in our great state.”

The 16-member commission would be appointed by the Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court and the most senior justice not affiliated with the same political party as the Chief Justice.

The bipartisan amendment will give voters a chance to give greater input on the legislative redistricting process and promote transparency through public hearings.

“The process outlined in this constitutional amendment will allow for the legislative map to be drawn by an independent group working in the best interests of our state, not politicians who are looking out for themselves,” Glowiak said. “By proactively asking for input and empowering constituents to share concerns, we are promoting a fair and open process.”

Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 4 would be effective upon being declared adopted and applicable to redistricting beginning in 2021 and to the election of General Assembly members beginning in 2022.

We have lived in Elmhurst for many years and it has always been a great community. Great schools, parks and a developing downtown area truly make it a wonderful place to live. Fourth Ward Alderman Noel Talluto was a leader over the last four years on the Elmhurst City Council helping Elmhurst to continue its move forward in a positive direction.

One of the concerns with our town has been the issue of flooding. The City has done a lot to rectify this but troubled areas remain. We recently sold our Elmhurst home of many years and, because we enjoy the community so much, we purchased another Elmhurst home. After moving, we discovered there was a long -standing issue with storm water in the new location. Noel personally visited my home several times. She took a worry off my shoulders by walking me through the facts and helping with the issue.

What truly impressed me about Noel was her fairness in dealing with the situation as well as her obvious honesty, integrity and diligence. I find that it is more and more difficult to find someone who really cares about what they do. Noel honestly cares about her constituents and is both friendly and approachable. She

shows genuine concern for both the individual and the community. With Noel Talluto’s re-election approaching, I know I plan to vote for her and I ask you to vote for her on April 2, so she can continue to serve us and keep Elmhurst moving in the right direction.

Fourth Ward resident supports Talluto

I have been a resident of Elmhurst for the past eight years and have seen significant changes in the community. The downtown area is thriving, new home construction is strong, and the flooding issues are getting better. This is in large part due to the policies of our local government. I know my 4th Ward Alderman, Noel Talluto, has been a significant contributor to the effectiveness of our City Council over the last four years.

Noel is hard working, intelligent, and trustworthy. Our families have been friends since we moved here, and I have seen firsthand her contributions to many different organizations. She will make the right decisions for the 4th Ward and the City of Elmhurst.

Noel Talluto’s re-election is approaching on April 2. I plan to vote for her and ask that others vote for her too.

Slices of life

People come in all sizes I look up to my husband.

Always have. Literally.

He is about eight inches taller then me, which gives me a straight view up and into his nose. When he has the occasional booger – and who among us doesn’t – I am often the first to see it. And point it out.

It’s all in the name of helping him.

He doesn’t always appreciate me dissecting the contents of his nose.

“You’re always looking for boogers,” he said.

“No I’m not,” I said. “They’re just there.”

Seriously I’m not looking for boogers. I don’t seek them out.

I’m not a booger junkie.

I just happen to have the perfect vantage point to see and know when he needs to blow his nose.

He’d probably be the first to know if I had dandruff.

It’s all about your point of view.

And each of us has one that is ours and ours alone.

Perspective.

It’s like the blue or gold dress phenomenon from awhile back.

Or the Laura/Yanni recording.

Some people saw blue, others gold. Some heard Laura, others Yanni. Some saw and heard a little of both. Each of us was sure our choice was correct even though there was clearly a difference of opinion amongst us.

I’m right; therefore you must be wrong.

Not quite.

These two scenarios are indicative of something pretty darn significant and it’s not that we all have our own perspectives on the world. We’re probably already aware of that. What these instances show is that maybe, just maybe, no one is right. Or maybe better said, we all could be right.

Or, maybe, sometimes, there is more than one right answer. Mind blown? Mine too.

The environment today is not always the most empathetic regarding differences of opinion.

Contrarily, I might even label it judgmental and sometimes blatantly hostile. People with differing opinions on varying matters often use harsh words against one another – usually via social media because it’s easier that way. Bashing someone in person can be downright uncomfortable, not to mention dangerous.

Harsh words – written, spoken or otherwise – do not often bring

someone around to your line of thinking. We all know this. Still, I find harsh words abound and I wonder what can be done about it – if anything can be done about it.

When we disagree is it possible to say that maybe there is no one right answer? Fifty shades of the truth, one might say. Maybe I see boogers and my husband sees dandruff and we are both correct and there is no need for either of us to get all gruffy about it because we are only pointing out the obvious from our own point of view.

But I’m belittling matters. The world is a complicated place.

Our issues are intertwined, interconnected and complex. We all come to them with our own set of life circumstances, experiences and yes, perspectives.

Religion, politics, social issues and the difference between right and wrong have no easy or pat answers. We can’t boil them down to being simply a result of differing perspectives. We certainly can’t compare them to boogers and dandruff. It isn’t as simple as that.

Then again maybe it is.

York High School 10th grader Kendall Dirks has won an honorable mention award in the One Earth Young Filmmakers Contest, sponsored by the One Earth Film Fest/Green Community Connections.

The challenge was to create a film related to one of six sustainability topics: energy, food, transportation, waste, water, or open space/ ecosystems.

In his 7.5-minute film, titled “Estelle’s Story,” Kendall interviewed Estelle Carol of Deep Roots Project about why she started growing edible gardens.

He also interviewed Ryan Anderson who talks about how the chemicals we use on our lawns are damaging the environment. Estelle said the Deep Roots Project wants to change the cultural concept that toxic green lawns are beautiful and replace that with the idea that edible gardens are beautiful as well as healthful. In the film, the lush images of Estelle’s garden and soft piano music persuasively convey the message.

Kendall started his film as part of a high school level Young Filmmakers’ Workshop. After that, he gathered the group’s film footage and then completed editing on his own. Kendall said he is grateful to the students and teachers for help with filming and initial editing.

Edward-Elmhurst to host ‘Unstoppable You’ Wellness Forum Edward-Elmhurst Health will host a Healthy Driven Wellness Forum, “Unstoppable You,” on Saturday, March 16 from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton, 1909 Spring Rd. in Oak Brook.

Samantha Harris, former co-host of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and Entertainment Tonight, will be the keynote speaker. Harris is also a cancer survivor.

In 2014, she was diagnosed with stage II invasive breast cancer at age 40 and shared her treatment journey in a video diary that aired on Entertainment Tonight and an E! Network special during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Along with her husband Michael, Harris founded the online community “Gotta Make Lemonade” to inspire positivity in the face of adversity. She recently published her first book, “Your Healthiest Healthy: 8 Ways to Take Control, Help Prevent and Fight Cancer, and Live a Longer, Cleaner Happier Life.” All “Unstoppable You” attendees will receive a free copy of the book.

“Unstoppable You,” funded by the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation, will include two sessions.

The Elmhurst College Bluejays Women’s Soccer team is hosting an equipment drive for Costa Rica. The team is collecting new and used soccer equipment for all ages that will be taken along on the team trip and

distributed to children in underprivileged communities in Costa Rica.

During the trip, the team will be providing free soccer clinics to the children. Collected equipment will be distributed at the clinics and at other charitable centers in the surrounding area.

Drop off locations include the Funky Java Coffeehouse at 40 So.

Villa Ave. in Villa Park. There is a receptacle inside or leave it at the door, if it is closed. In Elmhurst, items can be dropped in the receptacle on the front porch of 765 So. Spring Road.

Drop-off deadline is Tuesday, March 5.

Elmhurst 23rd annual student chess tourney coming April 3 The 23rd annual Elmhurst Student Chess Tournament will be held on Wednesday, April 3, beginning at 6 p.m. in the York High School Commons, 355 W. St. Charles Road. Students will compete in the following six categories: 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, grades 6-8, and high school. Last year, more than 250 students participated in the tournament.

All students who attend school in Elmhurst – public or private – are welcome to participate with the com-

pletion and submission of a signed permission slip and tournament fee of $3. All participants will receive a certificate; the top four in each category receive ribbons; tournament champions receive a trophy.

The annual Student Chess Tournament is organized by parent volunteers, many of whom coach chess clubs at their children’s schools.

Contestants will compete within the rules, playing five timed matches each. Volunteer judging will be done by independent chess experts, who

are brought in for this event. Snacks and drinks will be provided and donated by parents. Pizza will be sold during the tournament.

Raffle prizes will be awarded, donated by It’s Good To Be King store in Elmhurst.

Expert brings program on environmentally-responsible living

Benjamin Van Horne, founder of Greenline Homes, LLC, will speak at the Elmhurst Public Library on Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m.

During the presentations, the students told stories of immigration, simple living, wartime, poverty, and ingenuity. Some students brought family heirlooms to the fair for display. After all of the presentations, the crowd enjoyed a buffet of different ethnic dishes and favorite family treats, brought in by the students.

Brian E. Wagner Scholarship Tournament continues its success The Brian E. Wagner Scholarship Fund (BEWSF) held its 9th annual Bags for Wags fundraiser, making this the most profitable event since the organization’s inception nearly a decade ago.

The BEWSF’s mission is to encourage young leaders to make a positive impact in their lives and the prosperity of their communities through volunteer service. The cause commemorates the life of Brain Edwin Wagner who passed away in an accident in 1993. His spirit of making a difference is remembered through this scholarship.

The organization has bestowed this honor to more than 20 college bound high school seniors from Fenwick, IC Catholic Prep, Montini Catholic, Timothy Christian and York. The funds raised at the recent charity event will be used to defer the first year tuition costs for the recipients who are selected this spring.

Some of the past scholarship winners and their family members were in attendance including the: Borel, Carey, Doherty, Hill, King, Pukala and Russ families. The proceeds from the tournament were derived from: raffle prizes, silent auction items, gifted by local businesses and donations from participants and spectators. Event sponsors included Guaranteed Rate, Mama Maria’s Restaurant and Visitation Parish.

Scholarship recipient weighs in Kristen Borel, an inaugural scholarship recipient from 2012, shared her thoughts at the event.

“The scholarship not only helps students and families financially, it

challenges young leaders and gives them the confidence to embrace their strengths in an effort to continue Brian’s legacy of leadership and service,” she said. “Brian was a very admirable person and his genuine character continues to inspire and motivate young leaders to do their very best in college and beyond. The cause brings people together and embodies a strong sense of community which continues to make a lasting impression in so many lives.”

Crestview Garden Club making a difference Each year the Crestview Garden Club in Elmhurst donates a portion of its annual plant sale proceeds to support community programs that fulfill its mission to encourage horticulture through the education of the community and members. Earlier this year, the club donated a total of $1,000 to the following organizations: • University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners: $400 Purchase of supplies and teaching materials for the “Worms in the Classroom” and support for the community giving gardens.

• We Grow Dreams Greenhouse & Garden Center: $300 Support operating expenses and repairs needed for the organization’s greenhouse. More than 30 people with disabilities are employed by the garden center.

• The Garden Works Project: $300 Support the organization’s work with families to grow their own vegetable gardens to help promote self-sufficiency.

The club proudly supports projects to help promote horticulture and enhance the community’s natural envi-

Affiliated with the Elmhurst Park District, the Crestview Garden Club meets monthly on the first Tuesday of every month and features guest speakers, who address topics of interest to gardeners and homeowners.

Tatiana Kallianis then got on the scoresheet when she scored a goal on an assist from Tommy Hosler. Taylor recorded his fifth tally of the game before Rudman scored again just before the end of the second. Strong defense was key to supporting the offensive display of the first two periods. That defensive effort was led by Marco Gattone, Lucas Kabat and Jake Keller.

Forwards Santino Caponigri, Brady Carroll, Cooper Forsberg and Brooke Vogel dominated control of the puck in the final frame and maintained possession in the team’s offensive zone to limit comeback opportunities for their opponents from the Show-Me State.

Goalie Peter Kallianis recorded his fourth shut-out victory of the tournament in the championship game.

“The team seems to be peaking at the right time,” said coach Jeff Redick. “We have playoffs and another tournament in South Bend, Indiana coming up and I think we are playing our best hockey of the season.”

Ten-year-old charged with bringing knife, threatening school DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that ten-year-old male Parkview Elementary School student has been charged with bringing a large kitchen knife to school.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, Lombard Police received information regarding a student who allegedly brought a knife to school. Through the course of their investigation, authorities learned that the minor was allegedly in possession of a knife and that

The Chiefs Hockey Club Squirt White team won the 2019 Chicago Presidents’ Cup Tournament with an impressive 9-0 victory over the Falcons from Chesterfield, Missouri. The team bested a talented field of hockey clubs from St. Louis, Indiana, Hoffman Estates and West Dundee to win gold.

Timothy Christian boys basketball team wins regional title on home floor Trojans advanced to sectional this week

The Timothy Christian boys basketball made the most of its homecourt advantage recently.

The Trojans, playing in front of their own fans last week, won the Class 2A Timothy Christian regional title with a 47-33 victory over Elgin St. Edward.

Timothy won its first regional title since 2010 and first for coach Scott Plaisier in his second year at the helm.

“We were good on defense, especially in the second half,” said Plaisier. “We held St. Ed’s to 12 second-half points. We were really good on the glass. We did a good job of identifying their guys and we forced them into some tough shots and cleaned up on the boards. We didn’t give up a lot of second chances in the

second half after we gave up eight offensive rebounds in the first half that gave them second possessions and kept them alive. We did a much better job in the second half.”

Danardo Jones led the Trojans with 17 points and 14 rebounds to go with four blocks and four assists.

“Danardo played phenomenal,” said Plaisier. “He had 11 offensive rebounds. He played really well.”

Matt Owens and Zach Orange also were cited for strong play. “We had some good minutes from Matt, who played well and Zach Orange. We made three 3s all night and Zach had all three.”

Timothy reached the regional final in its own building after defeating Walther Christian in the semifinals.

“Walther was up two on us at half time,” Plaisier pointed out. “We played really well. We outscored them 20-4 in the third quarter. We held the lead and were up by as much as 22 points at one point.”

The two wins put Timothy at 20-

10 overall, giving Plaisier two 20win seasons in as many campaigns.

“I’m very proud of the guys,” he said. “They showed a lot of heart.

Against St. Edward we had a great fan base and a great student section.

The guys played with guts and intensity, especially in the second half when their backs were up against the wall a little bit.”

In the St. Edward contest, the two teams were tied 14-14 after the first quarter and Timothy led by a hoop at 23-21 at halftime. The Trojans outscored St. Edward 10-3 in the third quarter and 14-9 in the fourth. Owens added 12 points, while Orange had 11. Timothy shot 47 percent from the field. A.J. Vos added eight rebounds.

Against Melrose Park Walther Christian, Timothy trailed 12-10 after one and 26-24 at intermission.

The 20-4 run in the third quarter brought Timothy back. Owens had 14 points and six rebounds. Vos had 10 points and Jones another double-double with 10 points and 13 re-

bounds. Jack Baldridge finished with eight points and sank two 3s. Orange had four assists.

Timothy played earlier in the week in the Class 2A Aurora Christian sectional against Chicago Orr. “Chicago Orr is good,” said Plaisier of the two-time defending state champions. “They won their regional final by a score of 102-67. We will have our hands full, but we are look-

ing forward to playing them. That’s why you play the games.”

Timothy’s Andrew Petrulakis and Matt Bootsma each sank 10 three-pointers to advance out of the regional round of the Class 2A state 3-point shooting contest. They will shoot this week at the sectional level at Aurora Christian where berths in the state finals in Peoria will be on the line.

The York boys basketball team increased its school record for wins in a season to 27 after a recent 62-47 victory over Downers Grove South as part of the annual West Suburban Conference place-finish crossover series.

This contest was a battle of the two second-place teams in the Silver

and Gold divisions of the WSC. York finished 10-2 in WSC Silver play, losing only to conference-champion Oak Park-River Forest twice.

In the win against Downers South, York led 21-10 after the first quarter and 35-19 at halftime.

Erik Cohn led the Dukes with 19 points and sank a trio of 3-pointers.

Sam Walsh had 17 points and five rebounds. He also shot 8-for-10 on two-point attempts.

John Milling added eight points, including two 3s. Nick Kosich finished with seven points. Nate Shockey had six assists.

York shot 53.9 percent from the

field and also had 12 steals as a team.

Kosich, Cohn and Walsh each had three steals.

As a team, York shot 79 percent on 2-point attempts (15 of 19) and shot 30 percent from the 3-point line (6 of 20).

York earned the No. 3 seed in the tough Class 4A Proviso West sectional behind top seed Chicago Curie and No. 2 seed Chicago Whitney Young.

Through 31 games, Cohn was leading the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game. Walsh was second at 12.4, while Kosich was third at 12.0 and Shockey was fourth at 10.8, giving the Dukes four players averaging double-digit scoring figures.

Cohn was leading the team in 3-pointers made with 72 (43.1 percent). Kosich was second with 64 threes made (39.8 percent).

Walsh was shooting 66.4 percent from the field (152 of 229), while Cohn was at 50.3 percent (155 of 308). Kosich was tops in free-throw

percentage at 68.8 percent for players with significant amounts of attempts (64-for-93).

Walsh was tops in rebounds at 5.4, while Cohn was at 3.3 rebounds per game. Kosich had 96 assists, while Shockey had 67. Shockey was tops in steals with 64, while Kosich had 62.

York was forcing opponents into an average of 20.2 turnovers per game, while committing an average of 11.6 turnovers a game.

As a team, York was shooting 49.5 percent from the field and was holding opponents to an average of 45.1 points per game.

Nick Kosich’s sophomore and junior basketball seasons at York did not go exactly according to plan.

Kosich injured his knee during his sophomore year, had surgery and missed a good chunk of the season.

A leg injury last year flared up in the playoffs and cost him his second AAU summer season.

“I missed the last two summers,” he said. “That kind of stinks. I had doubts this summer that I would be a healthy player again. That can get in your mind. But I stuck by my coaches and teammates and they all helped me. I am beyond thankful that I’ve had a full and healthy season.”

And it shows. In his senior season, Kosich has been a key cog for a York team that set a new school record for wins in a season.

The Dukes opened Class 4A region-

Heading into the playoffs, Kosich was averaging 12.0 points per game and ranked third in that category on a balanced Dukes’ scoresheet.

He also was averaging 3.0 rebounds per game and had 96 assists against only 50 turnovers. His 62 steals on a defensively gifted York squad ranked second, as did his 64 three-pointers made (39.8 percent from behind the arc).

“We have a lot of guys on the team who like playing for each other,” he said. “I’ve been playing with most of my teammates since the fourth grade.

We have good team chemistry and we want to play for each other. It clicks for all of us.”

Kosich explained he and his teammates had a notion this year could be something that would fall into the special category. “We’ve had younger guys playing on varsity the last few years,” he said. “Freshmen and sophomore year we weren’t looking ahead, but we figured senior year would be our year. It’s shaped up to where we want it to be. We know there still is a lot of work to be done. It’s still a long journey. We would like to make a long

“We love playing good competition,” said Kosich. “I think that is going to help us in the playoffs. Coach (Vince Doran) does a good job of scheduling good non-conference opponents that will gear us up for this time of the year.

Kosich said his improvement hasn’t necessarily been as an individual this season. “I wouldn’t say improvement, but I just love getting my teammates involved,” he said. “I’m always looking for our shooters and at the same time I’m aggressive and will take what

we are about to make,” he said. “The college options will come at the end of the season. If I need to play AAU spring ball, I will do it. You need to have options. I probably won’t know anything until April or May, but I’m excited that I might get to continue my career somewhere.”

In terms of this week’s playoffs, Kosich said York must focus on the defense and rebounding. “We have to clamp down on defense and rebounding,” he said. “Those are two huge keys, especially against these athletic teams. We know our offense will be there, but we have to lean on our defense more. Defense and rebounding will be our keys to success in this playoff run.”

Kosich also reflected on going over the 1,000-point barrier. “It meant a lot to me,” he said. “I played with a lot of good teammates over the last four years and I’m lucky that I’ve had the same coaching group the last four years. That’s been awesome. It’s something not a lot of players can say. It’s more about my progression and growing as a player and a person. York has been a key in my success in life. I don’t really care about the individual accolades. The award means a lot to me, but it’s also for the whole group here.”

In terms of his future, Kosich said he has interest from Division II, Division III and NAIA schools.

In a matter of four years York senior girls bowler Krystyna Panek has gone from “why not give it a try?” to competing in the state finals meet.

Let us explain. In her freshman year at York, Panek and friend (and now teammate) Ruby Noel decided to try out for the Dukes girls bowling team.

“I thought it would be fun,” said Panek. “I hadn’t bowled before.

Ruby and I just joined for fun and then we ended up really liking it.”

Four years later, Panek capped off her high-school bowling career at York by making it to the state finals meet with her teammates.

Panek finished tied for 108th place.

“This season was fun,” she said.

“All of us had a strong bond and a strong friendship and that made it a lot better. The team was pretty new this season. We only had three girls returning. The new girls fit right in and made it a lot of fun. They are very nice people. We had a very strong connection.”

Individually, Panek ditched her wrist guard this season. “I was able to bowl without the wrist guard and I was mentally stronger this season,” she said. “Before, without the wrist guard I was kind of suitcasing

my wrist and that was affecting my ball. I worked on it a lot over the summer and I didn’t need it anymore.”

Panek said she started being coached privately in the off-season and joined several leagues out of Stardust in Addison.

Panek also lauded York coaches Katie Turnbull (head coach) and Jim Hedman for their help. “They never give up on us,” she said. “If you are struggling, neither give up on you. I was struggling the middle part of the year and they helped me get out of my funk, especially during the middle part of the season. When I got to York, they set us up with fundamentals and I built off that by myself and then with my coach in the offseason.”

Panek rolled a 299 game during this year’s regular season. “The 299 was a lot of fun,” she said. “I honestly did not think it would happen. I had strikes in the first four frames and then on the fifth I threw a ball poorly but it struck and then I kept striking.”

Panek remembers the 10th frame quite well. “In the 10th I was quite nervous,” she said. “I definitely felt like I had to get a 300, but I still was proud of the 299. I left the 4-pin on the last ball. That was my fault. I threw a bad ball that went high at first. It left a 4-7-10 split and then the 7 and 10 fell out and left just the 4 pin.”

Panek was asked why she now likes the sport so much. “It’s defi-

nitely more of a mental challenge than a physical one,” she said. “It’s made me a better person. I’m able to handle situations better. I also like the bowling community. There are a lot of people in bowling who are good people and that makes me want to stick in it.”

Panek said she would like to bowl at the college level and is looking at three schools where bowling would be an option. “I’m deciding between the three schools and they all have bowling,” she said.

She would like to study secondary education in college. “Right now it might be social studies, but I’m not set on that,” Panek said.

“I get asked a lot why I want to be a teacher and I don’t have a solid answer for that. I want to be there for people. A lot of teachers says they are there for their students and there have been a lot of students who go to their teachers for different things. It would be nice to be one of those teachers.”

In her spare time, Panek plays the violin at York and also is a manager on the York girls soccer team.

Looking back, Panek has fond memories of her time in the York bowling program. “It has been so much fun,” she said. “There has been a lot of support here no matter what you are doing. It’s been fun to get bowling more recognition. York bowling teams have gone to state five times in six years since coach Turnbull took over. We’ve done a lot of good things.”
