In a switch, City Council votes yes on York Commons shut-off valve

ELMHURST — City Council members had strong words for the Elmhurst Park District before they voted to put back in a shut-off valve in the proposed intergovernmental agreement (IGA) for the York Commons detention basin, which the Park Board insisted it be included.

Mark Sabinto (1st Ward) said the City should not be strongarmed by the Park District.

“You the taxpayers will be legally at risk for millions of dollars if the valve fails,” said Norm Leader (2nd Ward) talking about residents.

Council believes the Park Board will not accept the fact that the same if not better result could be achieved with no liability to the taxpayers at a lower cost by a minor excavation.

“I don’t believe this is the best deal for the taxpayers, but it is the only deal,” Leader said.

“Politics is the art of the possible, the attainable—the art of the next best. In that spirit I will vote yes.

“I want to make it clear that there is an ongoing cost for maintenance in addition to the approximate initial cost of $100,000,” said Ald. Mark Mulliner (7th Ward).

“I want to tone down the comments because residents are in distress.” Bob Dunn (2nd Ward) commented.

Kevin York (4th Ward) said he hoped many residents will e-mail members of the Park Board.

Mayor Steve Morley noted that this has been the leading subject since he took office three years ago.

ELMHURST — The Elmhurst Running Club 4 on the 4th has been named 2015 Race of the Year by the Chicago Area Runners Association. The 4 on the 4th, presented by Prairie Path Foot and Ankle Clinic, is a four-mile race held each year on the Fourth of July.

“We are thrilled to receive such a prestigious award from CARA,” said race director Bob Richards of the Elmhurst Running Club. “It reflects well on our efforts to put on a highquality event that fits in with the community of Elmhurst’s strong running traditions. We are doing our part to enhance wellness in Elmhurst and beyond.”

Elmhurst College names its 14th president Dr. Troy VanAken introduced to the College community last Thursday

ELMHURST — On Wednesday, Feb. 17, the Independent learned that the Elmhurst College Board of Trustees had unanimously elected Dr. Troy VanAken to serve as its 14th president.

At a special reception in their honor held on Feb. 18 in the Founder’s Lounge of the Frick Center, Dr. VanAken and his wife Annette were introduced to the College community where he talked about the school’s future and their role in it.

“When considering this position, I looked at a search profile, which said the campus was ‘intensely studentcentered,’” Dr. VanAken said in his remarks. “That’s what we were really looking for, a college centered around and focused on its students.”

VanAken is currently president of Thiel College in Greenville, Pa., an independent Lutheran liberal arts institution with approximately 1,000 students enrolled. Earlier this month, he was able to announce that Thiel had sur-

passed the largest fundraising goal in its 150-year history. In fact, Thiel’s 2016 Campaign had exceeded its $60 million goal 10 months early, due to the efforts and gifts of more than 8,500 donors.

His career in higher education includes years as a senior

administrator, a mathematics professor, a business entrepreneur and an athletic director. VanAken will officially beginning his presidency this summer, succeeding Interim President Larry A. Braskamp.

“I felt a calling when I was younger,” VanAken said. “My

mother said maybe it was a calling to the ministry but I assured her, ‘no, no, it’s not that.’ But I have always been called to this kind of work, to help young people get a good start in life.”

VanAken said he had already met with about 20

staff people at the college and got a good feeling from them.

“I had a sense that they wanted to innovate and move forward,” he said.

“The demographics may change but the spirit and passion is evident – not just to survive but to thrive.”

He further noted that this was Elmhurst College’s 145th year and that there would obviously be a big celebration in another five years.

“The year 2021 will be a special year for us. Let’s envision it now and make it the next chapter in Elmhurst College history.”

VanAken said he and Annette were first-generation college students, the first member of their families to attend an institution of higher learning.

“We know we could not do this without our own education.”

He noticed right away that Elmhurst was a fine community.

“This is a school with a strong reputation right in the center of a vibrant suburb, next to a great city.”

In the past, he has been active in economic and community development and has started three successful technology-related companies.

Dr. and Mrs. VanAken have two children, Trey and Gabriella.

ELMHURST — It is fantastic to see what is happening in Elmhurst’s economic development, Mayor Steve Morley said at the February 16th City Council meeting after a presentation by Mike Kopp, Assistant City Manager, and Erin Van De Valle, business development coordinator.

Mark Mulliner (7th Ward) commented that it is tremendous to see the vision coming and hopefully the City will see a lot more to come.

Kevin York (4th Ward) said all the development is quite amazing.

Bob Dunn (2nd Ward) said it is exciting to see small- and medium-sized businesses being

part of the economic development.

Development activity includes: At 965 North York • The Roesch Family Auto Group is expanding at 965 No. York; • The Wilkins Auto Group is expanding at 750 N. York; • Work is underway for the LA Fitness facility and a separate retail building where the Holiday Inn/Waverton Hotel used to be located; • A Thornton’s gas station and convenience center will open on the Steven’s Steakhouse site; • Construction is proceeding on the mixed-use Hahn Street development, now known as Elmhurst 255; • A mixed-use building called The York is coming to the former Plass building; • The Elmhurst Craft Kitchen and Bar will be located at 151 N. York;

• The Addison Parking Deck has opened on Addison St.; • A Fitness Formula Club will open later this year; • A Lakeside Bank will be located at York & Palmer Drive, where Ron’s Marathon

used to be; • Plans have been submitted to the City for the corner of Addison and First; • The Moreci Building at 532 So. Spring includes space for retail businesses;

• On the far south side, an Artis Senior Living facility is planned; and, • Nitti Construction is building single-family homes on the former site of Elmhurst Hospital.

Long-time City employee receives promotion Erin Van De Walle named Business Development Coordinator

ELMHURST — The City of Elmhurst recently appointed long-time City Employee Erin Van De Walle as Business Development Coordinator for the City. As a part of the Department of Economic Development, the focus of her role will be to identify and attract new businesses to the community, support the growth and development of existing businesses, and administer incentive programs.

Van De Walle grew up in Elmhurst and obtained a degree in Organizational Leadership-Communications from Elmhurst

College. She has worked at the City ever since, most recently as Deputy Clerk and parttime Economic Development Coordinator.

“Economic Development is all about the collection and distribution of information and building relationships,” she said. “I am excited to serve Elmhurst as the on-site fulltime resource for business, developers and brokers to connect with promoting positive growth and development of the City’s economic base.”

As part of her position, Van De Walle will represent the City at trade shows and sales conventions, research and recommend new programs and improvements to existing programs, and increase the City’s profile in the business community.

Child abuse Feb. 12 An officer requested a unit to the front lobby because the victim, according to police, had just run away from the police department and his mother. An officer located the victim and brought him into the police department. Police said the victim was crying and stated that the suspect, his mother, beats him and had cut his finger with a pair of scissors.

He stated he does not want to go home with her. The victim was placed with his father through DCFS.

Disorderly conduct Feb. 14 James Delany, 21, of Aurora, was arrested at the Adelaide parking deck at around 2:02 a.m. He was charged with disorderly conduct/befouling property after police said he was observed urinating in the parking deck.

Feb. 13 Edward P. Schmeier, 54, of Wheaton, was arrested near St. Charles and Berkley at around 6:18 p.m. While on patrol, an officer observed Schmeier standing next to his bicycle with numerous bags on the ground next to him. Police said the officer stopped to make sure he was okay and smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. According to police, while officer was talking to Schmeier, he fell and struck a concrete pole. Schmeier was charged with disorderly conduct and possession of alcohol in a public way.

DUI/DUI-drugs/illegal consumption/ possession of alcohol by a minor/public intoxication Feb. 16 Kristy Roe, 35, of Hoffman Estates, was arrested near York and Lexington at around 4:01 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Roe was found to be DUI. She was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol and improper lane usage.

Feb. 14 Antonio Giannini, 39, of Norridge, was arrested near Palmer and Schiller at around 2:25 a.m. and charged with DUI, improper lane usage, failure to signal and making an improper turn.

Feb. 13 Lester Cardona-Escobed, 24, of Bensenville, was arrested near York and North at around 2:37 a.m. and charged with aggravated DUI, DUI,

Feb. 11 Kevin Hansberger, 23, of Winfield, was arrested near North and Kenilworth at around 1:07 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Hansberger was found to be DUI and also in possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia and a plastic bag with cocaine residue. He was charged with two counts of DUI, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, speeding and no insurance.

Obstruction Feb. 12 Michael X. Rivera, 23, of Chicago, was arrested at around 12:29 a.m. Officers responded to a chimney sweeping company in the 900 block of Industrial Drive which reported a unknown dark vehicle parked between several work vans and two unknown males walking around. Upon arrival, police said an officer located Rivera running from the area. He was charged with attempted criminal trespass to property and resisting/obstructing a police officer.

Parole violation Feb. 13 Arthur McBride, 39, of Chicago, was arrested near York and Madison at around 5:37 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said McBride was found to be wanted on a parole violation. He was arrested and transported to the police station where, according to police, a debit card was found in his belongings with an unrelated name and he admitted to having intent to use the card unlawfully. He was charged with expired registration, no insurance, driving while license revoked and possession of another person’s debit card.

Possession of cannabis/drug paraphernalia/controlled substance/tobacco Feb. 16 Eric Arreola, 25, of Carol Stream, was arrested near York and North at

around 12:22 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Arreola was found to be in possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was charged for those offenses as well as illegally tinted windows and no front license plate.

Feb. 14 Maksim Seredniy, 18, of Chicago, was arrested near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 4:12 a.m. and charged with possession of cannabis, speeding and an expired registration sticker.

Feb. 13 Lwam Mekonen, 20, of Lombard, was arrested near St. Charles and I-290 at around 1:09 a.m. and charged with possession of cannabis and speeding.

Feb. 11 Saul J. Jurado, 30, of Chicago, was arrested near st. Charles and Prospect at around 12:42 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said an officer smelled a strong odor of cannabis coming from inside of Jurado’s vehicle. Jurado was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, no valid driver’s license and no insurance.

Suspicious circumstances Feb. 13 A complainant in the 900 block of S. Cedar told police that an unknown suspect described as a black male knocked on the door or his residence in the above area. The suspect told the complainant that he was from Amazon, but did not display an ID or uniform. He asked questions about when the victim was home and if there were any animals on the property. The complainant later called Amazon which stated it did not send anyone out to customer’s homes to ask questions.

Theft/burglary/ attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/ fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/ robbery Feb. 16-Feb. 17 • A complainant in the 300 block of Sherman told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered the detached garage of the complainant’s residence via the unlocked service door and entered both vehicles parked inside.

• A victim in the 200 block of Chandler told police that sometime overnight, an unknown suspect entered the attached garage of her residence and rummaged through two vehicles.

There were no signs of forced entry to the garage, and the victim is unsure if the overhead door was left open or closed the previous evening.

• Police said two unlocked vehicles parked in the driveway of the 300 block of Sherman were apparently entered overnight, as both were found with their doors slightly ajar. Both

owners drove their vehicles to work and called police that afternoon.

Jan. 7-Feb. 16 Sometime after Jan. 7, police said a truck at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand Ave. was taken off the lot without permission and without payment for repair work performed. A bill was sent to the suspect but the business has not had any other communication with him. An officer left a message with the suspect to contact the police department.

Feb. 15 Police said an unknown suspect(s) used a victim’s personal information and filed an IRS 1040EZ Form without his authorization. On Feb. 13, the victim in the 800 block of S. Linden Ave. received a letter from the IRS regarding his 2015 tax return. However, the victim had not yet filed his taxes.

Jan. 12-Feb. 14 A victim told police he parked his Skid Steer in the southwest corner of a banquet hall parking lot in the 600 block of W. North Ave. to clear the parking lot of snow. He arrived to clear the lot on Feb. 14 and noticed the door was missing.

Feb. 13 A complainant in the 500 block of W. Babcock told police she posted a figurine for sale on the website “Wallapop.” She was contacted by a suspect who sent her a check for the figurine.

The complainant was told to deposit the check, deduct the cost of the figurine as well as an additional $50 for “running around” and send back the rest of the remaining money. The complainant did not send the figurine, cash the check or send any monies.

Feb. 11

• A victim in the 500 block of Kearsage Street told police that an unknown suspect(s) hacked his Yahoo email account and sent out an email requesting an unspecified amount of cash to be sent to the Philippines.

Victim is concerned because he had recently misplaced his passport. There is no dollar loss at this time.

• A victim in the 1000 block of Swain Avenue came into the station and told police that a department store credit card was opened in her name without her knowledge. Victim believes her account may have been compromised. Her account was closed and she wasn’t out any money.

• A victim at a kids entertainment center in the 600 block of W. Lake St. told police she allowed a suspect (who was not named) use her credit card to pay a $200 deposit at the center. The suspect charged an additional $183.91, according to police, which the complainant did not authorize and stopped payment through her bank.

The suspect told police she will pay the facility the $183.91 balance.

Elmhurst History Museum rolls out new brand, new name

ELMHURST — It may not seem like much of a change at all.

But it’s a big change for those involved with the Elmhurst Historical Museum, which is changing its name to Elmhurst History Museum effective March 1. Museum staff is already changing the name and logo on all the components of its communications. The effort was a part of the Museum’s strategic plan to bring more clarity and strengthen the Museum’s name in the marketplace.

“The new name represents a new era in the Museum’s own history,” said Patrice Roche, director of public relations.

“It clarifies exactly what we

do here at the museum.

It’s been in the works for about five years now, she said.

“With an online presence and all the other methods today like facebook and twitter, we have to keep things very concise and understandable.”

Roche said she and Museum Curator Lance Tawzer went down to the Chicago History Museum to meet with Russell Lewis who facilitated that museum’s name change about ten years ago.

“We caught a lot of flak for it,” he admitted.

More Crime News Battery reported On Feb. 16, a victim in the 200 block of Claremont told police she went to her ex-husband’s home to pick up her son. The suspect, her ex-husband’s girlfriend, pushed her car door shut when she tried to exit it and pulled her hair.

Upon investigation, an officer learned the victim’s sequence of events were conflicting. An investigation is pending.

Fight reported at area hotel On Feb. 13-Feb 14, Paul F. Vasquez, 28, of Elmhurst, was arrested at a hotel in the 900 block of S. Riverside at around 5:49 a.m. Police said an officer responded to the hotel for the report of a fight in progress. According to the police report, Vazquez said he was battered by his girlfriend, but she claimed Vazquez had been “acting erratically” after drinking alcohol all night.

After an argument, police said

Vasquez threw the baby onto the bed and began physically fighting with his girlfriend and her sister.

He was charged with battery and endangering the life of a child.

Man claims to return iPhone, then refuses to bring to PD On Feb. 16, the girlfriend of a victim in the 400 block of S. Argyle said she got a phone call from the suspect (who was not identified) stating he found the victim’s iPhone in Chicago. The victim called the suspect back stating he never owned an iPhone. The suspect told the victim he had all the victim’s information and contacts. An officer contacted the suspect who stated he was just trying to be a Good Samaritan.

He refused to give the officer his contact information and stated he would not bring the phone to the Elmhurst Police Department.

Where’s the peanut butter?

t was a normal unassuming typical Tuesday, the day the peanut butter went missing. I couldn’t believe it myself. Although looking back, it shouldn’t have been too big a surprise.

But I’m jumping ahead of the story.

I enjoy a piece of peanut butter toast on occasion. Last Tuesday was going to be one of those occasions. I took out the bread and the toaster and opened the cupboard to fetch the peanut butter. It was gone.

ing perhaps someone put the peanut butter in an alternate location. I looked behind other items on the shelf but the tea bags and hot cocoa were not hiding the peanut butter. I checked the likely

places in the kitchen: the fridge, pantry and cupboards and came up empty. I went to my boys’ bedrooms and looked on the dressers, bookshelves and under the beds.

There wasn’t a ground peanut to be had.

I even rummaged through the garbage. Maybe someone tossed the peanut butter in there. Stranger things have happened. I’ve found cutlery, plates and cups in the garbage on prior occasions (but that’s another article). After all my searching, I remained – in a

t’s snowing again. White circles streaming down that look almost fake. The puffs (they are not flakes) are coming straight down and fast.

It seems as if someone above the stage is dumping out bags and bags of artificial winter faster than they should and the director needs to tell them to slow the pace. “We’ve only budgeted for so much snow!

Slower! We don’t want to run out AND it’s more romantic when the stuff floats down slowly!”

But this snow is real and there’s an unlimited supply with no chance of running out.

It’s pretty.

I know the haters are gonna hate hate hate, but really, shake it off. If you live in a part of the country where it snows, why shake your fist at the sky? It does this every winter, no surprise, so no point in bemoaning it.

No one posts on Facebook: “It’s night again! It’s dark! I hate it! Boo! I can’t believe it’s dark -again. Yuck! Dark, dark, go away!” We know the sun sets every night. We know in these parts it’s going to snow.

You might not like it, but complaining doesn’t change it.

If you live in Arizona, you have blazing heat in the summer. “Oh not, not the sun again! That hot ball of heat!”

For me, Arizona summers are too hot and I don’t choose to live there. It’s all relative. In

some parts of the country, it’s too hot to be outdoors some times of the year. And in some parts of the country, it snows.

It’s not complicated.

Today I have taken it upon myself to be the spokesman for snow. Snow is magical. Many people have cherished memories of snow days. Outside you partake in building of snow creatures, eating snow, letting a snow flake land on your tongue, building a snow fort, knowing the satisfaction of hitting someone with a snowball, and feeling the sting when one hits you. And who among us has not made a snow angel?

You can ski downhill, crosscountry, snow shoe, snow board, go sledding, or simply go for a walk. There’s a kind of hush all over the world. I’ll say it again, magical.

Inside you can watch from your window as the vista becomes a winter wonderland.

Build a fire. Make soup. Watch a movie. Or two. Read a book.

Or two. Binge watch a series.

Make love. Call a friend. The coziness of being inside watch-

ing it snow is a joy.

If you don’t feel like going out (or if the roads are too bad), this is an opportunity to do some activities you put off. Now you finally have time to write that novel, paint that masterpiece, get crafty. Knitting and crossword puzzling and playing board games are the perfect thing to do. Snow can be a reminder to slow down, and that is usually a good thing.

Snow is often in movies and books as part of the scene and the plot. Snow can be a major character.

Watch the snow and cuddle under a comfy blankie and even if (especially if) you don’t enjoy snow, make a list of all the things you are grateful for this fine day. (1. I am not being attacked by a bear. 2. I have a roof and heat. 3. I love soft sweaters….)

And one more thing we all know, snow lover or snow hater, this too shall pass. Don’t fret. Snow does not last forever. Nothing does. Be glad for today and know that spring is on its way.

I was perplexed. We don’t purchase the little snacksize peanut butter. Our jar is economy-grade and hefty.

There weren’t many places one could stuff a large jar of peanut butter. Nor did I think someone had eaten the entire jar. That would take some doing.

The people living with me are capable of enormous consumption. They are mostly teenage boys and teenage boys are notorious for their eating aptitudes. I don’t want to brag, but my boys can down an entire box of Triscuits while waiting for the oven to preheat so they can cook and eat a whole pizza (or two). And that’s just an afterschool snack.

But a nearly full economy-size jar of peanut butter would be a little much – even for boys with gargantuan snacking talents. Still, I knew I hadn’t touched the peanut butter. It had to be one of them.

It was a mystery, and my middle name is practically Scooby Do, so I did what any ordinary, 2016 CSI-inclined mom would do. I sent a group text: “Who took the peanut butter?” I typed in the frustrated-face emoji to further communicate my angst.

My husband, who is well versed in our weird and wacky life because he has also retrieved forks and spoons from the garbage, replied with the smiley face emoji. That guy gets me. I had to smile.

Over the years we’ve learned sometimes you have to laugh at the oddity of any given situation. It’s either that or go crazy. And if we went loco, who’d be around to search for the peanut butter?

Within three minutes of sending the first text, I’d heard from all the innocents, who were adamant about their peanut butter deficiencies.

Then I got the message I’d been waiting for. The confession. Indeed, one child did take the entire jar of peanut butter – for a school project.

What can a mom say to that? School projects trump breakfast any time of the day.

I beamed with pride; my son went to the effort of remembering he had a school project. Then I reached for the strawberry jam. My stomach was rumbling and the toast was just about ready.

Resident named association vice president of AWWA-Illinois ST. CHARLES — The American Water Works Association’s Illinois Section announced last week that Terry McGhee of Elmhurst was elected as one of the association’s next vice presidents by the Board of Directors. McGhee was elected along with AWWA’s next president-elect and treasurer, three other vice presidents and one new director-at-large.

McGhee is manager of operations at the DuPage Water Commission in Elmhurst. Active at the Illinois Section, he is notable as a founding member of the Information Management Conference Committee and the

Water Efficiency Committee.

He has also served in various positions on numerous other committees at the Section. This year McGhee commemorates 25 years as an AWWA member.

Having received a bachelor’s degree in business from Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, McGhee is currently working towards his master’s degree in business administration.

For his dedication to the water industry, McGhee is a recipient of the Illinois Section’s Operator of the Year Award in 2004 and the Clifford H. Fore Award in 2014.

York High School holds mock election

R

esearch reported by the Commission on Youth Voting and Civic Knowledge from 2013 showed that while schools matter, civic education must be a shared responsibility. It also reported that the turnout for average 18to 24-year-olds in presidential years between 1972-2012 was below 44%. Civics education is a low priority for most policy makers and the idea for engaging young people in politics has been controversial.

In that vein, the DuPage Election Commission and the League of Women Voters of Elmhurst recently partnered to bring mock primary elections to York High School.

On Friday, Feb. 12, the DuPage Election Commission loaned ten voting booths to

York High School, which was set up on the third floor right in front of a mural stating, “Freedom Isn’t Free.” The Election Commission designed a pdf ballot for both Republican and Democratic candidates vying to represent their party as its Presidential nominee.

League members acted as election judges and trained student volunteers to be judges for the day. The York Young Politicians counted the ballots by hand.

This year in Illinois, all 17-year-olds who will be 18 on or before the general election (Nov. 8) are eligible to register and vote in the primary, which is March 15. Eligible York students were able to register to vote on that day.

On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Elmhurst Park District had Courts Plus set up with all of the equipment so that the public could have a look at exactly what the Playground for Everybody is all about. More than 100 people attended the event, where they could try out the giant inflatables, play Twister, ride bikes and more. There was also a silent auction to help raise funds.

According to a brochure distributed that evening, research suggests that interactions that happen on the playground are a crucial part of helping kids understand what makes every person unique. It will be one of only a few playgrounds of its type in the Chicago area, making it a destination for families in surrounding communities.

While the Park District has budgeted $350,000 for the construction, the Playground for Everybody will likely cost close to $600,000, so funds are still sought from donations.

vin was born to William and Adeline Becker on October 9, 1924, on a dairy farm south of Juneau, Wisc. He attended a local elementary school and graduated from Juneau High School in 1942.

He served with the 82nd Airborne Division in WWII and was wounded during the Airborne Invasion of Holland, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. After his discharge from the Army in December of 1945, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, where he received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

His career in marketing and merchandising began when he joined the Management Training program of the Ed Schuster & Co. department store chain in Milwaukee.

After three years in the retail field, Calvin felt the Call of God to a full-time Christian ministry. He attended the Moody Bible Institute and graduated from the Pastor’s Course in 1955. During his senior year, he served as Student Pastor in Eastern Iowa. Also during his senior year, he met and married his wife, Phylis Zagorski.

toral ministry for three years.

Calvin received further Biblical and Theological training at Gordon-Conwell Seminary where he earned a Master of Divinity degree.

In August of 1961, he was invited to join the staff of the Moody Bible Institute, where he served in the Correspondence School for over seventeen years and the Student Development Department for more than seven years. In the Correspondence School, he started as Office Manager, but was soon promoted to Assistant Director in charge of promotion and advertising. He worked closely with correspondence students in prisons and jails around the country, as well the resident correctional chaplains. He was a member of the American Correctional Assn., the American Correctional Chaplains Assn., and the American Correctional Protestant Chaplains Assn. A transfer to the Student Development Office allowed him to work closely with day school students of Moody Bible Institute. He served as Manager of Student Employment until his retirement in 1986. In addi-

tion to his duties in the Student Employment office, he also served short terms as Financial Aid Coordinator and Foreign Student Advisor.

Calvin and his wife retired to Florida for ten years, but returned to the Chicago area to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Besides full-time Christian ministry, Calvin also taught Sunday School for several years, served as Co-Superintendent of the Junior High Department, and served on Deacon and Elder Boards.

Calvin is survived by his wife Phylis of 61 years; four sons, Dean (Lorrie), Bryce (Marta), Bryan and David; six grandchildren, Ryan, Kelly, Corey, Brittany, Sara, and Emily; and by one sister Ardis. He was preceded in death by his brother Duane and his sister Bernice.

Funeral service was held at First Baptist Church, Elmhurst, on Monday, February 22, 2016. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements provided by Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, Wheaton. For more information, call 630668-0016.

On Thursday, Feb. 11, second graders at Immaculate Conception Grade School dressed up in pioneer clothing and took to IC Parish’s Monsignor Plunkett Hall to get a taste of simpler times.

After studying the pioneer period of American history, on “Pioneer Day” students were asked to pack a simple, no waste lunch. After eating lunch together, students rotated through stations where they made corn husk dolls, made toys and autograph albums, learned to weave, and even listened to a fiddler. Annual student chess Elmhurst Lions to tournament reaches 20th year host 30th Annual Pizza Party ELMHURST — The Elmhurst Lions Club will hold their 30th Annual Pizza Party fundraiser at Sandburg Middle School, 345 E. St. Charles Rd., Elmhurst, on Saturday, March 12, from 5-7 p.m.

Tickets are $7 each or $35 for a family of five of more; children 6 and younger eat free. The event features All-You-Can-Eat pizza from Roberto’s and many raffle prizes for kids and adults. Contact John Wartinbee at (630) 279-5019 for tickets and more information.

“Money raised at the Pizza Party will provide scholarships for local high school seniors planning to attend college, plus help meet pressing needs in our community including assisting those who need vision, hearing, or other support services, and providing eyeglasses and hearing

exams for those in financial need,” said Dave Watschke, who is currently president of the Elmhurst Lions. “Lions members thank everyone who contributes to this important work. You are truly helping the Lions make a difference in our community.”

The Elmhurst Lions Club maintains a membership of approximately 50 members and meets twice a month on the second and fourth Mondays at 12:00 p.m. at the Wilder Mansion. Lions clubs are a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs. ELMHURST — The 20th annual Elmhurst Community Chess Tournament will be held on Wednesday, March 16, beginning at 6 p.m. in the York High School Commons, 355 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst. Students will compete in the following six categories: 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6-8th grade and high school. Last year, more than 200 students participated in the tournament.

All Elmhurst residents and/or District 205 students are welcome to participate with the completion and submission of

a signed permission slip and tournament fee of $3. All participants will receive a certificate; the top four in each category receive ribbons; and the tournament champions receive a trophy.

The annual Chess Tournament is organized by parent volunteers, many of whom coach chess clubs at their children’s school. Contestants will compete within the rules, playing five timed matches each.

isitation Catholic School kicked off Catholic Schools Week with an open house for its families recently. Each classroom displayed current projects and student work for families to view, while teachers were on hand to greet families.

The school also showcased its annual Science Fair, where 7th and 8th grade students displayed and discussed their science projects in the school’s Valentino Center.

J.C. Licht Store has new owners ELMHURST — The J.C. Licht retail paint store located at 223 No. York Rd. is one of 31 locations in the Chicago area to be purchased by new owners. A long-time professional in retail paint, the new owner is investing in upgrades to operations and to offerings at the store.

“Our mission is to offer the finest paint and paint-related products, along with advice at the highest levels, to create an unmatched resource within the paint and decorating industry,” said Elliot Greenberg, who now heads the company as owner, president and chief executive officer. The new company headquarters is based in Addison.

Management of the Elmhurst store will remain the same.

Elliott said he expects to add about 45 full-time jobs to the company’s Chicago operations over the next year.

The Elmhurst J.C. Licht store was previously owned by Benjamin Moore, which is a Berkshire Hathaway Company.

The retain chain was founded in 1907 by Jacob Christian Licht, who opened his first store at 3150 W. 12th Street, changed to Roosevelt Rd. in 1919. Benjamin Moore paint will continue to be the major brand sold at J.C. Licht.

• Red light cameras not making intersections safer According to a report issued last week, red light cameras are not decreasing accidents at the 55 intersections across 29 suburbs where they are located. In fact, crashes involving injuries reportedly went up or stayed the same at almost 50% of those intersections. Accidents classified as hazardous by transportation pros stayed the same or increased at 25% of the reporting intersections.

Consumer advocates are now saying municipalities should think it over before installing cameras.

Local leaders should “be judicious and know why crashes are

“No one has faith in these cameras,” Illinois Campaign for Political Reform Chairwoman Susan Garrett said, citing an ongoing corruption case in Chicago.

New bakery opens on Spring Road Sweet Heaven occupies former location of Juliann’s

ELMHURST — If you miss dropping in to Juliann’s Bakery for a coffeecake, there’s good news. There are plenty of coffeecakes and more to be had at a new bakery in the same location called Sweet Heaven.

Owned by Kareen and Oksana Sardaryan, Sweet Heaven has everything you could want for your sweet tooth such as Danish, meringue cookies, mango cheesecake, giant muffins as well as some Armenian specialties.

York boys basketball team records two conference wins Dukes finished regular season earlier this week against Morton

ELMHURST — The York boys basketball team split a recent set of four West Suburban Conference Silver Division games.

York lost 58-46 to Oak ParkRiver Forest, defeated Downers Grove North 52-37, defeated Proviso West 47-43 and lost 42-39 to Hinsdale Central.

The loss to Hinsdale Central wrapped up WSC Silver play. York finished 6-6 in conference play and took fourth.

The Dukes were 17-11 overall through late last week.

“We led most of the way against Hinsdale Central,” said York coach Vince Doran.

“We had a tough time down the stretch. Free throws hurt us (3-for-10 in the game).

Ryan Camp was York’s leading scorer against Hinsdale Central. “We had a pretty balanced scoring attack,” said Doran.

Doran was pleased with his team’s performance at home against Proviso West.

“We played better than we did over at their place,” he said.

“We shot the ball better from the line.”

In the win against Downers Grove North, York led 10-7 after the first quarter and 18-14 at halftime. The Dukes outscored Downers North 20-9 in the third quarter to pull away.

Jack Julian led the Dukes with 12 points and two steals.

Jordan Gray added 11 points and five rebounds. Rich George had seven points, while Jack Morrissey had six points and three steals. Patrick Grabowski finished with six points and five rebounds. Nick Kosich had three assists and Ryan Camp had two steals. York shot 51.8 percent from the field and held its opponent to 33.3 percent shooting.

“We played well on the defensive end,” said Doran.

In the loss to Oak Park-River Forest, York led 13-6 after the first quarter and 25-19 at halftime. Oak Park-River Forest outscored York 15-9 in the third quarter and 24-12 in the fourth quarter.

Kosich led the Dukes with 12 points and two steals. Morrissey added nine points, while Grabowski had eight points and four rebounds. Camp had seven points, eight rebounds and five assists. York shot 47.3 percent from the field.

Doran lauded the recent play of Kosich. “Nick has played well,” said Doran. “He’s really been more aggressive taking the ball to the basket, which helps him and everybody on the team.”

York finished up regular-season play earlier this week in a WSC crossover game against Morton.

“We’re excited about the stretch run here,” said Doran.

“We feel good about our chances. We have a good group of seniors and talented younger kids. If we put it together like we know we can, we are capable of making a deep run.”

IC Catholic Prep girls basketball teams wins first playoff game Knights lose to Fenwick in Class 3A regional championship

ELMHURST — Nobody ever likes to lose, but first-year IC Catholic Prep girls basketball coach Kelsey James can except her team’s 51-48 loss to Fenwick in the championship

game of the Class 3A IC Catholic Prep regional in Elmhurst.

“If we had to lose in the playoffs, I would want it to be how we played against Fenwick,” she said. “They played very hard and worked very hard.”

IC Catholic Prep led by 11 points at halftime.

“It was a great game that was very competitive,” said James.

“We struggled in the third quarter and then it was back and forth in the fourth quarter. It

“We played a lot of tough teams this season,” said James.

“It was more of a learning season. We were competitive in most of the games we played and gave a lot of teams a run for their money. I was fairly happy with how the season went and I’m very excited for the future with these younger girls coming back.”

IC Catholic Prep will graduate seniors Anjella Farmer, Leslie Montoya and Lillian Brown from this year’s team. Farmer is a four-year varsity player, while Montoya also has extensive experience at the varsity level. Brown transferred to the school and sat out her junior year due to IHSA transfer rules.

“They will be missed,” said James. “We’ll have to adjust to not having them on the floor.

They left a good mark for the team and gave the players an example of how to win and be successful.”

James is happy to have her first season as the Knights’ head coach under her belt and is looking toward the 2016-2017 campaign.

“It’s almost like a sigh of relief,” she said. “I know there was a lot of pressure to come in here and fill the shoes of the last coach. After this first year, I feel a lot more comfortable.”

Farmer was named to the all-Metro Suburban Conference West Division team, while Gibler advanced to the sectional round of the Class 3A state 3-point shooting competition.

Gibler will shoot in the sectional round Thursday at Glenbard South.

Helton has nothing but high marks for the York program.

“The York program means a lot to me,” he said. “I’ve been part of it since I first started with the Junior Dukes youth program.

I’ve grown up in this program, going to practices and tournaments. It’s made me who I am today. I’m sad leaving it, but I still hope to be part of the program with alumni night and supporting the wrestlers and coaches.”

Helton also had particularly fond things to say about retiring York coach Terry Clarke.

“I remember being a freshman and wanting to compete on the varsity,” he said. “Coach Clarke wanted to keep me down with the freshmen. I kept bugging him

“It’s hard to believe I wrestled all four years and gave everything I had,” he said. “I gave everything to York wrestling and now I’m going on to the next step. It’s going to be a hard transition, but I’m ready for it.”

Helton, who plans on majoring in education and would like to coach at the high-school level, will continue his wrestling career at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. “I’m very much looking forward to college,” he said. “I like the coaching staff there.

They are young and really into it and are really close with the wrestlers. It’s a great program.

I feel they are going to do big things for years to come and I want to be part of it.”

Helton is York’s first individual wrestling state medalist since Brandon Kupczyk took fourth in Class 3A at 132 pounds in 2013.

York girls basketball team competes in regional action

ELMHURST — The Timothy Christian boys basketball team recently closed out the regular season with a 56-49 win over Walther Christian in Metro Suburban Conference East Division play.

The win moved the Trojans to 10-15 overall.

Timothy jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the first quarter and led 30-16 at halftime.

Timothy increased its lead to 47-28 after three quarters.

Ben Lodewyk led the Trojans with 16 points, which included a 4-for-7 shooting effort from he 3-point line. He also had four steals.

Jonny Strube added 12 points and seven rebounds,

while Joey Davidson had nine points and seven rebounds.

Trayvon Williams added six points and three assists.

In earlier action, the Trojans dropped a 53-43 MSC East decision to Ridgewood.

Ridgewood led 14-7 after the first quarter and 20-15 at halftime. Ridgewood outscored Timothy 15-11 in the third quarter and 18-17 in the fourth quarter.

Strube and Mitch Evenhouse each scored 16 points to lead the Trojans. Strube shot 4-for7 from the 3-point line and also had two blocks. Evenhouse pulled in a team-high six rebounds.

Davidson added nine points and five rebounds, while Josh Caver had five rebounds. Williams had three assists and three steals, while Lodewyk had four rebounds and three assists.

Timothy opened play earlier this week in the Class 2A Aurora Christian regional

against Elgin St. Edward. Timothy is the No. 7 seed, while St. Edward is the No. 6 seed.

If Timothy won that game, it played Wednesday against No. 1 seed Aurora Christian. The winner of that game advances to Friday’s regional title game at 7 p.m.

York girls basketball The York girls basketball team dropped a 46-37 game to St. Charles North in semifinal action of the Class 4A Glenbard West regional.

York finished its season with a 15-15 record.

Kristen Viola led the Dukes with nine points on the strength of a 3-for-3 shooting night from the 3-point line.

Kelly Polte added seven points, while Ellen Foley had six points on two 3-pointers.

Caylin Rufus finished with four rebounds and two steals, while Kaylin Kenny had four assists.

York made seven 3-pointers in the game.

Camp was averaging 5.5 points and had 35 steals and was leading the team in charges taken with 11. Camp also had 68 assists compared to 31 turnovers.

Julian was shooting 78.4 percent from the free-throw line (40-for-51), while Kosich was shooting 76.0 percent from the line (19-for-25).

Gray was shooting 54.8 per-

Trapani was leading the team in 3-pointers made with 54 (42.9 percent). Kosich had 35 three-pointers (38.9 percent) and Morrissey had 32 three-pointers (39 percent).

IC Catholic Prep’s Bianchini finishes second at state wrestling Knights boys basketball team closes out regular-season play

ELMHURST — IC Catholic Prep sophomore wrestling standout Joe Bianchini recently took second in the 106pound weight division at the Class 1A state finals held in Champaign.

Bianchini, the No. 1 seed at 106, opened the tournament with a pinfall win in 1:51 over

Pittsfield’s Noah Booth (2120), who was the No. 16 seed.

Bianchini then scored a 3-0 win over Rockford Lutheran’s Josh Schrank (36-4), who was the No. 9 seed.

In the semifinals, Bianchini recorded a 6-0 win over East Alton-Wood River’s Drew Sobol (39-5), who was seeded fourth in the tournament.

In the finals, Bianchini dropped a 7-6 decision to No. 2 seed Tyler Fleetwood (40-1) of Fulton.

Bianchini finished his sophomore season with a 42-2 record.

Bianchini is IC Catholic Prep’s first state wrestling medalist.

York’s Barabolak, Waldherr headed to state swimming meet Dukes finish sixth as a team at sectional

The York boys swimming team placed sixth at the recent Lyons Township sectional.

York finished with 109 points and was only six points out of fifth place.

On the individual front, York’s Flanagan Waldherr and Peter Barabolak qualified for the state meet.

Waldherr, a junior, qualified for state after placing second in the 500 with a time of 4:45.65.

Barabolak, a junior, took second in the diving competition with a score of 504.05 points. He finished behind Lyons Township sectional champion Seamus Scotty, who had 521.10 points.

Barabolak did not automatically qualify for the state meet, but will be one of 32 at-large divers to qualify based on his 504.05 point total. Barabolak had the 10th highest sectional point total in the state. His 504.05 score would have won 11 of the other sectionals in the state.

Barabolak is making his third state finals appearance. He qualified with a 472.05 point total as a sophomore and a 370.30 point total as a freshman.

Senior Mike Stumpf placed sixth in the diving competition with a score of 373.10 and was on the list for consideration of an at-large state berth (the top 32 non-champion sectional scores earn at-large bids).

York’s 200 medley relay team took seventh with a time of 1:46.18. That team included Alex Marlott, Tyler McKenna, Owen Rehling and Dan Stumpf.

Waldherr was fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.78, while Jack Fiorini was eighth at 1:51.22.

McKenna took eighth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.09. Marlott was 12th in the butterfly with a time of 57.00.

York was 10th in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:34.33.

That team included Simon DeGrace, Stumpf, Fiorini and Waldherr.

Marlott was seventh in the backstroke with a time of 54.83, while Max Delaney was 13th at 1:00.58. McKenna was 13th in the breaststroke with a time of 1:04.76.

York’s 400 relay team placed sixth with a time of 3:23.58.

That team included Marlott, Fiorini, McKenna and Waldherr.

In a 76-52 loss to Aurora Central, Lyles had 11 points and five rebounds. Rowell finished with 10 points. Sophomore Amari Reed had six points and shot 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Ramirez had six points, while Austin Reed finished with three assists.

IC Catholic Prep opened Class 2A postseason action

The Knights are the No. 4 seed at Aurora Christian and played either Lisle (No. 5) or Westmont (No. 10) on Wednesday in the semifinals.

If IC Catholic Prep won that game it will play for the regional title Friday at 7 p.m. at Aurora Christian against either No. 1 seed Aurora Christian, No. 6 seed St. Edward or No. 7 seed Timothy Christian.

The Knights finished the regular season with a 12-14 mark and ended up 3-9 in MSC West Division play.

Track team second at Proviso West Hagstrom, Morley individuals winners for Dukes’ girls track team

ELMHURST — The York boys track team recently took second at an indoor meet hosted by Proviso West.

Prospect won the meet with 84.5 points. York took second with 81.5 points. York won the sophomore meet with 84 points. Prospect was second at 67.5 points.

At the varsity level, York won the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:16.1. Jon May was third in the 3,200 run with a time of 10:03.08, while Devin Davies was fifth at 10:18.9 and Dominic Castanoli was sixth at 10:31.7.

Obiora Nnam was second in the 55 hurdles with a time of 7.8. Connor Murphy tied for third in the 55 dash with a time of 6.7.

Leonard Liebeno was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:13.0.

York took third in the 800 relay with a time of 1:40.7.

AJ Mimlitz won the 400 dash with a time of 55.3, while Sunny Kurian was second at 55.9 and Gabe Van Ryn was third at 57.0. Alec Deuter took fourth in the 600 with a time of 1:31.9.

May was second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:45.2, while Sean McGregor was fourth at 4:50.6. Kurian was fifth in the 200 with a time of 25.0.

York placed second in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:40.4.

Gavin Wahlgren won the long jump at 16-1, while Zachary Zurlo was second at15-9.

Noah Neidigh was third at 15-6, while David Cooke was fourth at 15-4 and Anthony Delgado was fifth at 14-10.

Gabriel Lewis was fourth in the triple jump at 34-10 and Neidigh was sixth at 33-3.

Nnam won the high jump at 6-0, while Lewis was sixth at 5-8.

Christopher McCoy was fourth in the shot put at 39-2, while Chase Stephens was fifth

at 38-2.

Murphy won the pole vault at 13-6 and Michael Seaborg was third at 11-6.

York varsity hockey club wins again Dukes look to capture Metro West President’s Cup

ELMHURST — The York varsity hockey club defeated rival Waubonsie Valley for the second straight night to move to the final round of the President’s Cup. The game was played on Saturday, Feb 20 at All Seasons Ice Arena in Naperville.

From the puck drop, York took control of the game. During the first two minutes of the contest, the Dukes scored on a shot from the point by

Will Borrows. Nick Lee scored again a minute later, assisted

by Joseph Levin. The line of Frank Wheatland, Paschen and Grey Miller continued to apply offensive pressure. The defense of Will Borrow and Cam Dabrotka- along with penalty killers Elliot Fafinski, Ryan Pedote and Joseph Levin- kept Waubonsie Valley from taking advantage of some early power plays.

In the second period, Waubonsie Valley recovered and scored on a power play. York responded quickly on a shot

by Borrows. Then Mark Dorsey cleaned up a rebound shot, assisted by Wheatland with seven minutes remaining to

give York a commanding 4-1 lead.

From that point on, York controlled the ice and goalie Jack Buckley was near perfect.

Trevor Corsello, Michael Rouzer, Tom Sierocki and Chris Lee provided strong defense to shut down Waubonsie Valley’s chances.

Late goals from Levin and Jack McDonnell put the final score at 6-1.

York now awaits the victor of the Naperville Central and Nequa Valley series to battle for the Presidents’s Cup. Check yorkhockeyclub.org for the league championship schedule which starts this Friday.

Man sentenced in fatal DUI; Lost control of car on Spring Road WHEATON — DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced on Friday, Feb. 19 that a Downers Grove man charged in a fatal crash had been sentenced to one year of periodic imprisonment in the DuPage County Jail. The accident claimed the life of 48-year-old Thomas Fitzsimons of Hinsdale, who

was a passenger in the vehicle.

William Decero, 51, of 5425 Washington Street in Downers Grove, appeared in court Friday in front of Judge Daniel Guerin who handed down the sentence.

On September 22, 2013, at approximately 12:04 a.m., Decero and Fitzsimons were traveling on Spring Road just

south of 31st Street in Oak Brook. Decero, who was driving Fitzsimons’ vehicle, lost control of the vehicle, swerved off the road and crashed into a wooded area. Following a 911 call from a neighbor, authorities from the Oak Brook Police Department arrived at the scene and found both men still in the vehicle. Both

men had been wearing their seatbelts. Fitzsimons was pronounced dead at the scene and Decero was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. An investigation into the crash revealed that Decero had a blood alcohol content of 0.139. On August 14, 2015, Decero entered a plea of guilty to one count of
