In a switch, City Council votes yes on York Commons shut-off valve By Dan McLeister For The Elmhurst Independent
ELMHURST — City Council members had strong words for the Elmhurst Park District before they voted to put back in a shut-off valve in the proposed intergovernmental agreement (IGA) for the York Commons detention basin, which the Park Board insisted it be included. Mark Sabinto (1st Ward) said the City should not be strongarmed by the Park District. “You the taxpayers will be legally at risk for millions of dollars if the valve fails,” said Norm Leader (2nd Ward) talking about residents. Council believes the Park Board will not accept the fact that the same if not better result could be achieved with no liability to the taxpayers at a lower cost by a minor excavation. “I don’t believe this is the best deal for the taxpayers, but it is the only deal,” Leader said. “Politics is the art of the possible, the attainable—the art of the next best. In that spirit I will vote yes.
Just ‘Being a Kid Again’
These two ladies look like “Edith Ann,” Lily Tomlin’s character from Laugh-In who sat in the giant chair! But it’s actually Elmhurst residents Charity Gibala (left) and Mercedes Nelson sitting in an inflatable chair at the Park District’s Be A Kid Again event to raise funds for the Playground for Everyone coming to Butterfield Park. The evening was a chance for the general public to try out the equipment. Story and more photos inside this issue. photo by Dee Longfellow
