An exceptional effort at the state meet Senior Angela Stangarone of the York girls gymnastics team advanced to the finals of two events at the IHSA state meet, which took place Friday and Saturday at Palatine High School.

Here, she is pictured on the awards stand (2nd from left) after her secondplace finish on the vault. Stangarone qualified for the finals in two events— the vault and the balance beam. She earned a second-place score of 9.7 on the vault and tied for fifth in floor exercises with a performance that received a score of 9.375. Stangarone finished 16th in Friday’s all-around competition at the state meet with her total of 36.175.

Four Elmhurst University students have been awarded the highly competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, enabling them to pursue study abroad experiences in Australia, the United Kingdom and Argentina.

The Gilman Scholarship is the U.S. Department of State’s flagship undergraduate study abroad scholarship and provides funding to U.S. Pell Grant recipients to pursue overseas study and internships.

About Victoria Stopa Elmhurst University junior Victoria Stopa is spending her entire Spring Term at the University of Australia.

“Studying abroad in Sydney, Australia, has always been one of my biggest dreams,” she said. But the trip seemed unattainable until, with help from the University’s national fellowships and scholarships coordinator, Stopa was able to apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship.

Stopa, who grew up in Addison and a small town in Poland, believes her study abroad experience will increase her global and cultural competency.

On Wednesday, Feb. 14 – Valentine’s Day – a vow renewal ceremony was held for 12 couples who are residents of The Roosevelt at Salt Creek Senior Living Community. In an unusual twist, it was officiated by Mayor Scott Levin, who brought a bit of honor and prestige to the occasion.

The 12 extraordinary couples, whose love stories span an incredible 34 to 71 years, collectively embody more than 725 years of unwavering devotion. Ranging in age from 80 to 90 years old, they are living testaments to the enduring power of love. Under the officiation of Mayor Levin, they will reaffirm their cherished bonds in a ceremony filled with emotion and nostalgia.

The Wings – 64 years Larry and Ellen Wing, aged 84 and 81 respectively, celebrated 64 years of marriage on January 18, 2024. Their journey began in the 1960s at Standard Oil, where Larry, hailing from Wisconsin, swept Ellen, a south side Chicago native, off her feet with a date in downtown Chicago, watching “To Kill a Mockingbird” and dining at George Diamond Steakhouse. Six months later, Larry proposed, promising adventures galore. Throughout their marriage, Larry and Ellen adopted two children and have been blessed with three grandchildren. They devoted a significant portion of their retired life to volunteer work, spanning Meals on Wheels, Catholic Charities, and fostering education through the Friends

After residing in Downers Grove, they found a new home at The Roosevelt two and a half years ago. Larry quips, “Yes, dear,” when asked about their marriage’s longevity, underlining their enduring love and friendship. Ellen highlights the importance of maintaining individuality alongside their bond. They’ve renewed their vows three times on their 25th, 50th, and 60th anniversaries, cherishing each moment of their enduring love story.

The Reasors – 67 years Jim and Carol Reasor’s remarkable love story spans an incredible 67 years, commencing with their marriage on July 13, 1956. It all began in an Indianapolis church youth group, where 16-year-old Jim first encountered 14-year-old Carol.

Their inaugural date marked the genesis of a lifelong bond.

As they pursued higher education at Purdue University, Carol followed Jim, resulting in numerous memorable adventures. Their wedding ceremony took place in the same Methodist Church where their teenage romance blossomed. Just nine months later, their first child arrived, heralding the start of a family journey that would encompass five children, 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

While Carol devoted herself to

homemaking and later pursued a career in education, Jim flourished as an industrial engineer until his retirement in 1996. Their shared interests in boating and snowmobiling injected excitement into their lives, leading to exhilarating travels across Europe, the Caribbean, and Alaska.

Throughout their decades-long companionship, Jim and Carol have remained steadfast best friends, attributing the endurance of their marriage to their unwavering commitment to each other and their solemn wedding vows.

As Jim’s 90th birthday approaches and Carol celebrates her 88th, they continue to live life to the fullest, drawing strength from their enduring romantic bond and friendship.

Their inspiring love story serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring power of love.

Obituaries James W. Carson, 88 James W. “Jim” Carson, age 88, passed away February 11, 2024, with loving family by his side. He was born December 30, 1935 in Oak Park, to the late Alex and Laura Carson.

Jim was a graduate of Drake University and was an agent for Allstate Insurance for 40 years. He enjoyed golf, fishing and being in Lake Geneva.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sherall; sons, Dave (Angie) Carson and Jeff (Kelly) Carson; grandchildren, Moleigh Carson (Matt Byerwalter), Tara, Liam, Anna, Lauren and Alex; and niece, Nancy Rand. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Cathy, and sister, Dorothy Saporito.

Services were held on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Yorkfield Presbyterian Church, 1099 South York Road, Elmhurst. Interment Chapel Hill Gardens West, Oak Brook Terrace.

Jean moved to Elmhurst when she was three years old and spent 100 years being a part of the community and the Church, First Congregational UCC. She graduated from York High School, class of ‘38. She attended one year at Elmhurst college before marrying Ernest Schildbach, and starting a family. Jean was the dear sister-in-law of Fritz Kupsky and a fond aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Feb. 8-Feb. 12 Police said that subsequent to a call for a report of harassment, the victim stated she has been receiving numerous harassing text messages and emails from the suspect. The suspect was contacted and advised to cease all communication with the victim.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Identity theft, fraud, forgery

According to information provided by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported six incidents of identity theft or fraud.

Battery Feb. 12 A victim at Elm Creek Drive told police he was involved in a verbal argument and then was shoved by a suspect who was no longer on scene. The victim did not wish to sign complaints.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Feb. 12 Catino Harris, 38, of Glendale Heights, was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle near North and Berteau at 7:14 p.m.

Feb. 8 A victim in the 100 block of N. Elm reported at 2:54 a.m. that the passenger side window to his work van had been shattered.

The victim has no information on a suspect, and nothing appeared to have been taken from the inside. This case is pending investigation.

A complainant at the Elmhurst Art Museum reported an unknown suspect(s) used silver spray paint and damaged the canvas outside the museum.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance, dispute Feb. 10 A 51-year-old man from Waterman, Ill., was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 300 block of W. Butterfield at 8:36 p.m.

Feb. 9 A 51-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 100 block of E. North at 7:41 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to an argument, the suspect struck the victim several times.

Police said officers responded to the 100 block of Fellows Court for the report of a domestic battery. Upon arrival, a victim related the suspect hit him in the head while loading their child into the car. The suspect left the scene before officers arrived. An investigation is pending.

Tanno J. Sheard, 39, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, obstructing identification, illegal transportation of open alcohol, failure to signal, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Roosevelt at 5:27 a.m.

Feb. 10 Police said that subsequent to a patrol through a park in the 400 block of N. Oaklawn at 11:57 p.m., a reporting officer located a suspicious vehicle and three occupants drinking beer while sitting inside the vehicle. Alex Martinez-Lopez, 22, of Bensenville, was issued a citation for open liquor in a vehicle. Marvin Lopez, 19 of Bensenville, and Daisy Herrera, 19 of Addison, were cited for possession of alcohol by a minor. All suspects were released on scene to an adult family member.

Santiana Walker, 26, of Rolling Meadows, was charged with DUI, aggravated battery to a police officer, driving while license suspended, two counts of endangering the life of a child, failure to secure a child in a restraint, improper lane usage, unsafe tires, no front registration, one headlight and no insurance near Route 83 and North at 9:49 p.m.

Feb. 9 Janet Aburto, 47, of Hillside, was charged with DUI near North and Route 83 at 8:38 p.m.

Joseph Thomas, 36, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated DUI, diving while license suspended, unlawful use of an electronic device and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Indiana at 11:47 p.m.

Harassment, threats Feb. 14 A victim in the 200 block of N. Berteau told police she received numerous calls and a threatening text message from an unknown number. The reporting officer contacted the suspect who related he thought he was contacting a friend and apologized.

Feb. 13 A complainant at Elmhurst University reported her ex-boyfriend continued to contact her after repeatedly being told to stop. A reporting officer contacted the suspect and advised him to have no further contact with the complainant. The suspect was served with a no-trespass order.

Possession of cannabis in a vehicle

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported one incident of possession of cannabis by either the driver of a vehicle or a passenger: Clifton Taylor, 25, of Olympia Fields, near Glade and North at 11:45 p.m.

Possession of a controlled substance Feb. 12 Jeffrey T. Greer, 48, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis in a motor vehicle and failure to wear a seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Fullerton at 2:26 p.m.

Feb. 8 Alexandria Alonso, 27, of River Forest, was charged with driving while license suspended, unlawful possession of controlled substance, unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near I-290 and Lake at 8:49 p.m. Police said the suspect was found to be in possession of cannabis which was not in a properly sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant container, as well as Psilocybin mushrooms.

Suspicious incident Feb. 10 A complainant in the 600 block of W. Crockett told police at 11:28 p.m. that subsequent to a suspicious noise, he observed an unknown male standing next to his vehicle in the driveway. Upon confronting the suspect, the suspect fled in a dark colored vehicle at a high rate of speed eastbound on Crockett. An investigation is pending.

Theft, retail theft, burglary, attempted theft or burglary, forgery, deceptive practice, obstruction, robbery Feb. 13 Police said that subsequent to an investigation involving vehicle thefts, members of the Elmhurst and Bensenville police departments observed several suspects commit two vehicle thefts in Bensenville. Officers and Illinois State Police attempted a traffic stop on an allegedly stolen semi-tractor from this incident, which fled. Police said three male

suspects fled on foot in a residential area in Cook County. Officers located and arrested, Kamil Spieczynski, 37, of Algonquin, who was charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of burglary tools, and was transported to DuPage County Jail. Elmhurst Police continue to investigate this incident.

Feb. 12 Marissa Gonzalez, 33, of Bridgeview, was issued a citation for theft in the 300 block of W. Lake. According to police, a victim reported a coworker had taken her keys from her jacket. The reporting officer met with the suspect, whom police said admitted to taking the keys.

Feb. 10 Dylan Elwood, 20, of Evanston, was issued a citation for false use of an ID at a pub in the 100 block of N. Addison at 12:51 a.m.

A victim at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police that while shopping at the store, an unknown suspects distracted her, stealing her wallet out of her purse. The suspects then attempted to use the victim’s credit card several times unsuccessfully. The victim has notified her bank and canceled her credit cards.

Feb. 9 Karlon Hudson, 54, of Addison, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at 4:37 p.m.

A complainant in the 300 block of W. Grand reported a vehicle was taken by an unknown suspect while it was being serviced at a car dealership at the above location. This case is pending investigation.

Feb. 8 Elonda Johnson, 53, of Rochester, Minn., was charged with burglary, felony retail theft, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, while Brandon Johnson, 29, of Chicago, was charged with burglary and felony retail theft at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North at 12:46 p.m. Police said the suspects placed bottles of liquor in a baby stroller and exited the store without paying.

Jan. 22 A reporting officer responded to a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at 2:02 p.m. for the report of a delayed retail theft. The complainant related a known retail theft suspect stole merchandise. An investigation is pending.

Dec. 11 A complainant at a car dealership in the 300 block of W. Grand reported a loaner vehicle and its key fob has been missing for several weeks. An investigation is pending.

Sept. 2Oct. 21. 2023 Police said on three separate incidents between the above dates, an unknown suspect(s) used fraudulent information to purchase a vehicle from the same dealership in the 300 block of W. Grand. An investigation is pending.

Warrant arrest

Feb. 8 Police said Sonia Rivas, 40, of Chicago, was served with an arrest warrant out of Lake County, and also was charged with burglary and retail theft at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North for an incident that allegedly occurred Jan. 31.

City announces water, sewer rate adjustments Move will support vital infrastructure upgrades

Background The MUF operates as a self-sustaining enterprise fund, supporting the City’s water and sewer utility.

Unlike government funds, the MUF relies solely on user charges to cover operational and capital expenses.

No property taxes support the MUF. Traditionally, the City reviews and sets rates annually, with periodic rate studies to determine that the rates are sufficient to provide for the operating and capital expenses of the MUF. The last rate study was conducted in 2019. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and the extra-ordinary financial uncertainty Elmhurst residents faced, the rates from the 2019 study were not implemented until 2021. As City staff prepared for the 2022 rate review, it became apparent that market conditions had rendered the 2019 study obsolete. The MUF system costs in the 2019 study were prior to inflation increases and supply chain disruptions that affected the normal replacement cycle for water and sewer mains.

Notably, the Consumer Price Index increased 18% from August 2020 to August 2023. Due to these factors, in March, 2023, the City Council approved an updated Water and Sewer rate study to ensure the user rates are based on current conditions.

Infrastructure upgrades The proposed increase in rates is driven by the needed infrastructure improvements. The increase to the City’s operating costs for the MUF, such as salaries and services, only increased by 2.3% from the 2019 to 2023 study, well below the con-

In 2024, major upgrades to the Water Reclamation Facility will take place, addressing components that are approximately 30 years old. These improvements include clarifiers, excess flow/chlorine contact tanks, disinfec-

tion equipment, boiler systems, and a non-potable water system. The City must also prepare for an unfunded state and federal mandate to remove phosphorus in the treatment process,

by August 31, 2031. This mandate requires that the City begin a new phase of reconstruction to the plant over the next several years, to be in compliance by that deadline. The capital plan for the Water Reclamation Facility includes $78.8 million in necessary investments through 2031.

The Finance, Council Affairs and Administrative Services (FCAAS) Committee of the City of Elmhurst has deliberated extensively on the Municipal Utility Fund (MUF) rates, culminating in a proposal to adjust water and sewer rates. This adjustment is essential to ensure the sustainability of the City’s water and sewer utility and to facilitate critical infrastructure upgrades.

Having convened on the topic several times, the FCAAS Committee most recently on Monday, Jan. 22, discussed the need for changes in response to crucial factors impacting the City’s water and sewer infrastructure.

Everyone deserves a real, true-life love story Last week, we were in the “amore” season of the year.

Love. Kisses. Hearts. Roses.

Romantic cards. Candles.

Champagne. A box of chocolates.

On Feb. 14 we celebrated Valentine’s Day. Or, better put, some of us did.

For many years, the day had personal significance to me because I actually had a real-life Valentine.

He even lived with me.

We ate meals together, slept in the same bed and made plans for the future. On Valentine’s Day we used to exchange cards and everything. I even received a dozen roses on more occasions than I can remember. We were the real deal.

For 33-plus years, my husband was my Valentine. That maybe sounds boring, but it wasn’t.

Now I observe the day of love from afar. I don’t anticipate roses or chocolates from my sweetie.

But I do observe the day of love in another way: I live it vicariously through others.

This year, the couple worth watching is obvious.

They are known as Tay tay and Trav by their closest friends—as well as everyone who’s ever listened to a Taylor Swift album or watched a Kansas City Chiefs football game.

I’ve maybe done both so that makes me somewhat of an expert on the subject.

Travis and Taylor have taken their romance public—very public. Here’s why: they didn’t have a choice. They are both in the category of superstar and lots of people love watching, keeping tabs on, dreaming of and making judgements about their love story— or lack thereof.

At first, I was a bit skeptical myself. The world has made me a cynic. Or maybe the media have done that without any help from the rest of the world at large. Either way, I approached the T and T romance with a grain of salt and a fair amount of doubt as to the reality of it all.

But, I’ve been won over.

Not that it matters in the least.

What I think—what anyone thinks—is inconsequential. In the big scheme of things, it is about as important as which team won the big game on Super Bowl Sunday.

(But you didn’t hear that from me!)

My favorite Valentine’s couple this year are a public lot. Maybe they chose that lot; maybe not.

But either way, love, when real, is magical and miraculous and worth our reverence and gratitude.

Are Travis and Taylor “really” in love? Maybe, maybe not. I like to think so.

I guess it’s human nature to speculate. And hope. And I am truly hoping for them.

Love between any two people is absolutely wondrous. It is also filled with challenges. And those challenges, I think, multiply, when your success is based on a public persona.

But public or not, everyone (repeat that, everyone!) deserves a real, true-life love story. And as far as Travis and Taylor go, I’m rooting for them.

As far as the big game? I didn’t have a favorite, just a favorite couple. I guess you can call me a hopeless romantic.

Because in the end—and the beginning and everywhere in between—love is all that matters, no matter how famous, or infamous your are. (And yes, that is a joke— the words, not the love.)

The “State of Our Educator Pipeline 2023” report by Advance Illinois underscores the challenges in Illinois’ education system and the urgent need to address the teacher shortage comprehensively. While recruiting more teachers is important, addressing teacher attrition, responsible for 90 percent of the demand, requires a deeper examination of root causes and strategies to retain high-quality educators.

Teachers often leave due to poor working conditions and inadequate support from school leaders. Competent school leaders can create a positive work environment, vital for addressing the teacher shortage. Investing in capable school leaders is vital to addressing the teacher shortage and establishing the necessary conditions for retaining high-quality

educators, while effective district leaders play a key role in empowering principals.

Extensive research pinpoints four critical skills of effective school leaders: interpersonal skills fostering a positive school climate, instructional skills prioritizing teacher support, collaboration skills promoting teamwork and professional growth, and organizational skills for efficient management. Diverse leadership has benefits, including increased teacher diversity and better outcomes for students of color.

We urge the Illinois State Board of Education to prioritize: • Funding the Aspire Fellowship program to support leadership candidates and recruit educators of color.

• Supporting another cohort of the New Principal Recruitment grant for Arab, Indian, and Asian educators of color and under-resourced districts

lacking staff with Principal Endorsements.

• Restoring state funding for New Principal Mentoring.

• Maintaining state funding for New Superintendent Mentoring.

• Allocating district capacity-building grants to assist districts in implementing programs centered on the school leadership pipeline.

Illinois must make a significant commitment to establishing a statewide system for preparing and developing effective leaders, crucial for retaining high-quality teachers who can meet students’ learning needs and drive organizational and instructional improvements.

History Museum announces programs for upcoming exhibit

‘Victory at Home: 1941-1945’ opens March 1

The Elmhurst History Museum, 120 E. Park Ave., has announced its next exhibition “Victory at Home: 1941-1945,” set to open March 1.

Spurred by the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States entered the Second World War in 1941. At this time, President Roosevelt urged every citizen to answer the call to fight, whether overseas or at home.

From March 1 - August 18, “Victory at Home: 1941-1945” will examine the Home Front during World War II and explore the sacrifice, service, and patriotism of Americans throughout the country, with a focus on those in Elmhurst and greater Chicagoland.

Located on the first floor of the historic Glos Mansion, which the city of Elmhurst used as a WWII ration board office and now houses the Museum, the new exhibit will share the stories of the steadfast generation of civilians who helped lead the Allies to victory through united efforts such as rationing, women in the workforce, increased war production, purchasing war bonds, and much more.

These efforts taught Americans how to economize and to alleviate the domestic hardships and mental fatigue a nation at war often experiences.

The exhibit will include compelling artifacts, photographs, and interactive audio-video stations with hands-on experiences, journals, uniforms, WWII posters, historic radio broadcasts, and more.

Chicagoland residents, including those in Elmhurst, had an immense impact on the country’s war

efforts through local manufacturing, rationing and recycling materials, planting Victory Gardens, and raising funds to support the war. Looking back at this period in history may help younger generations better understand what their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents endured during the 1940s,” said Sarah Cox, Elmhurst History Museum Curator of Exhibits. “We hope the exhibition not only educates guests on the resiliency, resourcefulness and total participation efforts by the nation, but helps them relate the experience of this generation to current events.”

Supporting the troops To honor the home front efforts of those in the Elmhurst area, the Museum is partnering with Operation Support Our Troops – America, one of the largest volunteer-based military support organizations in the country, to send care packages overseas to our troops during the run of “Victory at Home: 1941-1945.” In addition to educating visitors on Operation Support Our Troops – America’s mission, the Museum will collect much-needed supplies, goodies and letters to be delivered each month.

Additionally, the Museum will host a series of public programming events throughout the exhibit’s run, from an exhibition gallery talk with Curator Sarah Cox and a 1940s-themed cooking class, to a lecture titled “The Windy City at War: Chicago’s Homefront 1941 – 1945” and a visit from members of the Rockford Peaches Vintage Baseball Club who reprise the game as seen in the film A League of Their Own. In honor of the Elmhurst History Museum’s upcoming exhibition, Victory at Home: 1941-1945, the museum has announced a variety of programing through May 2024.

Religious ethicist to present EU’s annual Staudt lecture AI, or Artificial Intelligence, has emerged as a tool for productivity, a threat to jobs, even a stand-in for God. Much of the language used to talk about AI draws on apocalyptic and prophetic discourse, as well as on images of God that are rooted in ideas of God’s omniscience, says the Rev. Dr. Kristel Clayville, a lecturer in ethics in the computer science department at University of Illinois Chicago.

On Wednesday, March 6 beginning at 4 p.m., Clayville will present “Dea Ex Machina: Using Feminine Images of God to Describe AI,” this year’s Genevieve Staudt Intercultur-

al Lecture at Elmhurst University.

It will be held in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge. Admission is free but reservations are encouraged at elmhurst.edu/cultural.

Dr. Clayville’s talk will center on other aspects of God’s being from biblical texts and feminist theology, to think about AI in different terms.

Does embracing feminine images of God offer new ways to talk about AI and its possibilities?

In addition to her role in the computer science department at UIC, Clayville teaches in the medical school. Formerly, she was the acting director of the Zygon Center for Religion and Science, as well as worked

as a chaplain and ethicist at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Her current work focuses on the intersection of religion and technology.

About the Staudt lecture Established in 2002, the Genevieve Staudt Intercultural Lecture is held each spring as part of Elmhurst University’s celebration of Women’s History Month. Genevieve Staudt joined then-Elmhurst College in 1932 as a professor in the education department, and later became the first woman administrator at the University, serving first as dean of women and then dean of students.

Get moving!The risks of an overly sedentary lifestyle Health experts call it “sitting disease.” It refers to when people spend more of their time behind a desk or steering wheel of a car or planted in front of a television than they do engaging in physical activity.

According to the American Heart Association, sedentary jobs have increased by 83 percent since 1950, and technology has reduced many people’s need to get up and move. Inactivity is taking a considerable toll on public health.

A study from the University of Cambridge equated inactivity with being obese. The Mayo Clinic advises that research has linked sedentary behavior to a host of health concerns, and found those who sat for more than eight hours a day with no physical activity had a risk of dying similar to the risks of fatality linked to obesity and smoking. Increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, abnormal cholesterol levels, and excess body fat all can be attributed to inactivity.

Mental health can be adversely affected by a sedentary lifestyle as well. Australian researchers surveyed more than 3,300 government employees and found men who sat for more than six hours a day at work were 90 percent more likely to feel moderate psychological distress, such as restlessness, nervousness or hopelessness, than those who sat for less than three hours a day.

In addition, a sedentary lifestyle can significantly increase a person’s

risk for various types of cancer. A German meta-analysis of 43 studies involving four million people indicated those who sit the most have higher propensities to develop colon cancer, endometrial cancer and lung cancer.

Johns Hopkins Medical Center says research shows that high levels of exercise at some point in the day can lessen some risk, but it’s not en-

tirely effective if most of the rest of the day a person is inactive. Risk for cardiovascular disease increases significantly for people who spend 10 hours or more sitting each day.

Various medical organizations recommend individuals get up and move at any opportunity to help reduce risks of inactivity. Erin Michos, M.D., M.H.S., associate director of

preventive cardiology at the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, advises people who are very sedentary to aim for 4,000 steps per day. Such individuals can then build up to a target of 10,000 steps daily.

The Mayo Clinic recommends these strategies to reduce the amount of time you spend sitting:

• Stand while talking on the phone or watching television; • Invest in a standing desk; • Get up from sitting every 30 minutes; and • Walk at lunch or during meetings.

Sedentary lifestyles can affect health in many negative ways. But there are various ways to get up and go over the course of a typical day

Five things to check off your health care list this year With everything going on in our lives, plus staying home more due to the pandemic, it may be easy to put off appointments for preventive screenings, check-ups and immunizations. But as you get older, these visits become even more important – and many of them come at no additional cost under your Medicare plan.

For example, did you know that Medicare covers an annual wellness visit at no extra cost to you? Flu and pneumonia vaccines are also fully covered.

And rest assured that, in light of the pandemic, clinics, doctor’s offices and pharmacies have health and safety protocols in place to help keep patients safe during their appointments.

Make it a priority to add the following appointments to your 2021 calendar.

Your long-term health may thank you.

1. Annual wellness visit. There is no additional charge under Medicare for your wellness visit.

2. Vaccinations. A COVID-19 vaccine might be available in your area.

These vaccines are an important step in slowing the spread of the disease.

For shingles, a vaccination is the best way to protect against the disease. Two doses are recommended for those 50 and older.

The flu shot usually becomes available in August. It’s important to receive your flu shot each year, particularly in a time of COVID-19.

Finally, a pneumococcal vaccine, which can help prevent pneumonia, is recommended for all adults 65 years and older. This can be paired with a flu shot.

3. Preventive screenings and specialists. Visits for heart health, diabetes and other chronic conditions may be crucial to your overall wellness. Connect with your doctor to find out which preventive screenings you may need, too. This might include a mammogram, a colonoscopy and more.

4. Dental exam. A dental exam is an important part of oral and overall health. The American Dental Association recommends two dental visits a year.

5. Eye exam. You should consider having an eye exam every year. Not

only can it help with how well you can see, but it may also detect issues, like glaucoma.

IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team wins regional title Geiger logs double-double; Knights playing in Chicago Julian sectional this week

Defense was the name of the game for the IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team in its recent rematch with town neighbor Timothy Christian. The Knights downed Timothy 38-20 to win the Class 2A Chicago Cristo Rey Jesuit regional title. The win gave ICCP its fifth regional title since 2014 and second under coach Todd Fisher.

ICCP also defeated Timothy 4714 on Jan. 20. “For us, the priority was to game plan defensively,” Fisher said. “Our defense was very good. We were happy with the discipline we showed on defense. We were happy with the pressure we put on them and we took care of the boards and were able to capitalize on turnovers. If you talk about defense, when we had the opportunity to go full-court man, we went full-court man. One of our defensive principles was to stay disciplined, don’t go for the steal and just play good, solid defense. When we were in the half court, we played good ball pressure and one pass away. We played very solid defense. We had defense as the key going in and I was very happy with the defense we played in that game.”

ICCP (21-9) was money from the free-throw line in the game, hitting 16 of 21 foul shots, including a 10for-12 effort in the fourth quarter.

“We knocked down a bunch of free throws, which was good,” Fisher said. “A lot of that came in the fourth when we were playing the clock.”

Fisher was pleased with how the Knights pivoted on offense after a sluggish first half. “We didn’t shoot well in the first half,” he said. “We were 2-for-21 in the first half and missed a lot of shots in the paint and did not shoot well from the outside.

We made a halftime adjustment. We wanted to get the ball inside as much as possible. In the second half, we only attempted two shots outside the paint. We wanted to get the ball in-

ICCP led 6-0 after one quarter and 9-2 at halftime. The Knights took a 20-10 lead into the fourth quarter.

Allie Geiger led the Knights with 14 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals, three blocks and two assists. Maura Grogan added seven points, four rebounds and a steal and Mary Kate Hilgart had the same seven points, four rebounds and one steal.

Chicago Perspectives in the regional semifinals. ICCP led 42-14 at intermission. “We took care of what we needed to take care of in the first half,” Fisher said. “We jumped on them early like we needed to and then cruised.”

Geiger logged another double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, to go with five assists, four steals and one block. Hilgart had a solid game with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Graziella Narcisi had eight points and three assists.

“We had them scouted and knew what we had to do,” Fisher said.

“The kids took care of what we asked them to do. It’s a one-game-at-a-time approach and they took care of business.”

ICCP played Lisle earlier in the week in one Class 2A Chicago Julian sectional semifinal. Chicago Phillips and Westmont played in the other semifinal. If the Knights defeated Lisle they will play in the Julian sectional final tonight against the Phillips-Westmont survivor with a trip to

the Class 2A Morton College supersectional in Cicero on the line.

“We played Lisle at Christmas and beat them 48-32,” Fisher noted late last week. “That was December, and this is February. They may come out and show us something completely different. It’s important for us to focus on the game at hand. Our kids are as locked in as they have been all year. I like their confidence. They are battle-tested and have won games against quality opponents. The kids are focused.”

York boys basketball team defeats Oak Park-River Forest Dukes secure second place in West Suburban Silver

The York boys basketball team recorded a 69-65 West Suburban Conference Silver Division win against Oak Park-River Forest to close out a highly successful regular season. The Dukes finished the regular season 23-7 overall and 9-3 in the WSC Silver, earning second place outright.

Downers Grove North, a 4A state qualifier a year ago, won the conference title.

In the win over OPRF, AJ Levine continued his torrid ways with 33 points.

Braden Richardson added 14 points and Ryan Pechous had seven points. “AJ Levine has been unbelievable. He was everything,” York coach Mike Dunn said. “These last three weeks, he’s averaging 24 or 25 points a game. He’s been really good to the point he should be at least special mention or on third-team all-state. He’s putting up those kind of numbers. We’ll see what it looks

like.”

York trailed OPRF at halftime. “We held on,” Dunn said. “We were down five or six points at halftime and then took the lead in the third and got it up to right and held on the rest of the game.”

Dunn also praised the recent play of sophomore Hunter Stepanek and Pechous.

“Hunter is a sophomore who has been up with us the whole season,” Dunn explained.

“He’s stepped up and has developed into

our sixth man, seventh guy coming off the bench. He’s played well. He’s rebounding and blocking shots and getting a basket here and there. He gives us that bump defensively, especially when we go bigger.

Ryan Pechous has been really good. He’s been kind of that glue guy all season. He’s not scoring a ton of points, but his toughness is there. He’s helped us a lot.”

$1 million to local food pantries

Elmhurst-Yorkfield slated to receive $25,000

The DuPage County Board recently voted to allocate nearly $1 million to 16 food pantries to assist with vehicles, capital equipment, and technology purchases.

In August 2023, the county established the Local Food Pantry Infrastructure Investment Program to provide funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to food pantries. These funds will assist with capital equipment purchases that help the pantries store, package, and deliver food or essential commodities. Funds may also be used for information technology investments for data collection, reporting, or for issuing payments.

“These targeted investments will make it easier to get fresh food to the neediest residents in our county quickly, provide important resources to local pantries and strengthen our food distribution network for decades to come,” said Human Services Committee chair Greg Schwarze.

The Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush is a longtime leader in the interfaith movement who has been working to protect an inclusive vision of religious freedom for people of all faiths and none.

An ordained Baptist minister, Raushenbush is president and CEO of Interfaith Alliance. He also has been working on a biography about his grandmother, economist Elizabeth Brandeis, who followed in the footsteps of her famous father, Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, by becoming a leader in labor legislation and helping lay the groundwork for the New Deal.

On Tuesday, March 5 beginning at 7 p.m., Raushenbush will present “Elizabeth Brandeis and the Radical Jewish Women that Influenced the Nation,” this year’s Abraham Joshua

A prominent member of the Girl’s Basketball team, Mary Kate has been a huge part of the team’s success this season. She is only a sophomore and yet is averaging 9.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.0 steals per game. Mary Kate’s success was honored by the conference and she was selected for All-Conference in the Girl’s Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC).
