York boys basketball team breaks school record for wins in a season

The York boys basketball team logged a couple historical benchmarks recently.

The Dukes broke the school records for wins in a season with a 63-36 West Suburban Conference Silver Division victory against Hinsdale Central.

York moved to 26-4 overall and finished 10-2 in WSC Silver play.

The 1961-1962 and 1966-1967 teams went 25-4, while current coach Vince Doran’s 2013-2014 team finished 25-6.

York senior Nick Kosich also went over the 1,000-career-point mark in a recent game, becoming only the fifth boys player in program history to do so.

In the win against Hinsdale Central to close out conference play, York led 22-7 after the first quarter and 40-18 at halftime.

Erik Cohn led the way with 21 points thanks to an 8-for-11 effort from the field and a 5-for-7 output from the 3-point line. Nate Shockey added 14 points and four steals, while Nick Kosich finished with 10 points, five assists and three steals.

Sam Walsh had eight points.

York drained 11 of 22 3-point attempts in the game and had 23 field goals, of which 18 had an assist attached to them.

York also won 69-44 against Proviso West in WSC Silver play. York trailed 14-13 after the first quarter, but used a 27-9 second-quarter explosion to take a 40-23 lead. York outscored Proviso 17-10 in the third quarter.

Walsh had 24 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 10 of 12 from the field. Cohn had 18 points and five

assists, while Kosich had 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. York had 27 field goals in the game and 19 assists.

Shockey exploded for 27 points on the strength of 4-for-7 shooting from the field, 5-for9 from the 3-point line and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. He also had five rebounds.

Cohn added 18 points and six rebounds, while John Milling had nine points. Kosich had eight points, eight assists and five rebounds, while Walsh had six rebounds.

York shot 13-for-25 from the 3-point line and 22-for-39 from the field (56.4 percent).

The Dukes also were 13-for-14 from the free-throw line (92.9 percent).

In this game, Kosich broke the 1,000-career-point barrier at the varsity level on a made free throw with 5:10 left in the first quarter.

In a 69-45 non-conference win against town neighbor IC Catholic, York led 21-13 after the first quarter and 38-21 at halftime.

Mike Pedote led the Dukes with 14 points and four rebounds and also canned four 3-pointers. Kosich had 12 points, five assists, five steals and also drained four 3-pointers. Cohn had 11 points and hit three 3-pointers.

Walsh had 10 points and seven rebounds. Shockey had nine points and four steals. York had 15 steals as a team and forced 21 turnovers.

John Milling added a pair of 3-pointers. York hit 14 of 31 three-point attempts (45.2 percent).

Fighting ALS, fighting the costs Toole, who, at 48, has outlived his life expectancy, has out-of-pocket expenses of more than $125,000 yearly, and though he requires roundthe-clock care, only has a part-time caregiver due to the cost not being covered by insurance. Toole’s wife of 20 years provides the rest of the caregiving.

“The cost of life – the biggest battle with ALS isn’t enduring the relentless physical toll it takes on your body,” said Toole. “It’s the cost to just stay alive. People have to often choose between financial ruin, divorce, bankruptcy or death.”

Family support The Tooles are parents of two York High School students. Daughter Regan is a junior and son Paddy is a sophomore. The students are involved in many extracurricular activities and clubs as well as athletics.

The York community most recently showed its support for the Toole Family by hosting its 2nd Annual ALS Awareness night when the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team took on Lyons Township High School. With both teams standing and sporting red Matt Minions shirts over their uniforms, Toole kicked off the game thanking York High School, both teams, and the community for their support.

And boy, does Toole ever go! Despite the struggles of getting out of the house into the family’s specially equipped minivan, the Tooles are making the most of life and are an inspiration to so many people.

In 2016, the Les Turner ALS Foundation named the couple Team Chairs for its annual Walk for Life held at Soldier Field. Toole and Karen led a red army of about 100 teammates wearing Matt Minions t-shirts walking ahead of one of the world’s largest crowds supporting the ALS community. Toole kicked off the event by speaking to the estimated crowd of 7,000.

Youth baseball 8U Team plays in Puerto Rico Takes $1000 donation toward equipment

Guests at the clinic included Mike Huff, a former Major League Baseball player who played with the Chicago White Sox in the early 1990s. Huff is now the president of the Bulls/Sox Academy. He gave a brief speech to some of the players and parents who attended Sunday’s clinic. Another guest at the clinic was Southpaw—the White Sox mascot.

Inaccuracies in Park Board race story

In the Feb. 7th issue of the Elmhurst Independent, a story appeared about Candidate’s Forum hosted by the League of Women Voters on Sunday, Feb. 10. In the list of candidates running for Elmhurst Park District, Claire Kubiesa was left out.

The story also indicated that voters would select three of four candidates, when in fact voters will select two of five candidates. The Independent apologizes for the errors.

The Park Board Candidates should have read as follows: The candidates running for Elmhurst Park District were introduced.

They were Nora Wernette Baxtrom, James M. Colbert, Claire Kubiesa, Vince Spaeth and Liz White. Spaeth is the incumbent. Voters will select two of the five candidates.

The League posed questions to the Park Board candidates on three main topics: 1) taking the Park District’s environmental sustainability efforts to the next level, in terms of energy, waste, transportation, and/or protecting the ecosystem; 2) the plans for the medical office property on Palmer Drive now owned by the Park District; and 3) whether or not there will be a need for a Park District referendum in the near future.

The Elmhurst Youth Baseball 8U team went to Puerto Rico this past week, leaving for Puerto Rico on Thursday, Feb. 14, where the team played four games (two on Friday, Feb. 15, and two on Saturday, Feb. 16) against four different teams from Puerto Rico.

They played in Gurabo, located in east central Puerto Rico, an area severely affected by Hurricane Maria in September 2017.

The team presented a $1,000 check on behalf of Elmhurst Youth Baseball to its sister league in Puerto Rico. The money was donated by Dr. Steve and Patti Davis, who are grandparents of a player on the Elmhurst 8U team. The money will help the league replace some baseball equipment.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage to property

Feb. 13 An officer near Rex and St. Charles responded to a report of a stop sign which had been knocked down. The officer learned that the stop sign was struck by a vehicle and was reported the previous day. There were fresh footprints around the top of the fallen post, and the street signs were missing. It appears that an unknown suspect removed the street signs.

Disorderly conduct

Feb. 11 A victim at the Elmhurst Public library told police at around 2:09 p.m. that while en route to the library, an unnamed suspect crossed the street in front of her vehicle. As the victim was in her vehicle returning books at the drop box, the suspect reportedly approached her vehicle, claimed she almost hit him, flipped her off, and slapped the passenger side of her vehicle.

The suspect apologized, and related he suffers from paranoia, anger issues and other disabilities. The victim did not wish to pursue the matter.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Feb. 10 A complainant in the 100 block of N. Avon told police at around 10:24 p.m. that her daughter woke the suspect up and the suspect grabbed the daughter’s arm. The complainant was filming the suspect at this time and stated that the suspect then allegedly knocked the phone down and struck her. Officers viewed the video and found no evidence of domestic battery. The complainant and the children left the residence for the evening.

Feb. 8 A victim in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill told police at around 1:58 p.m. that the suspect, who is the father of her child, had an argument with her regarding phone numbers of other men in her cellphone. She stated that the suspect reportedly started following her around the room while she was trying to gather her belongings and placed her in a bear hug.

The suspect told police they were arguing, and she was allegedly throwing items at him. Police said the suspect denied hugging her. There were no physical injuries and neither party wished to sign complaints.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication Feb. 12 Ryan J. McGuin, 29, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI drugs and no valid driver’s license near North and Maple at around 11:45 p.m.

CALL 800-222-TIPS Feb. 10 Prentice Stansberry, 51, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and parking where prohibited near St. Charles and Hill at around 12:28 a.m. Police said a reporting officer located Stansberry passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle at the above location.

Feb. 7 Ryan M. Gallian, 24, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated DUI, driving while license suspended and one headlight subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and I-290 at around 1:27 a.m.

Fleeing, eluding

Feb. 9 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Willow at around 12:43 a.m. the suspected vehicle, a gray Honda, refused to stop. The vehicle fled east on I-290 and the stop was terminated.

Fugitive from justice Feb. 7 Police said officers in the 300 block of W. McKinley received information that a person wanted on an out-of-state warrant was inside the residence. Officers were able to make contact with Blake Ogle, 33, of Joplin, Mo., whom police said was taken into custody and transported to the police station. Ogle was charged with being a fugitive from justice.

Harassment, threats

Jan. 7 Police said a reporting officer met with a complainant’s parents, who related that their daughter is being harassed via her cell phone.

Additionally, her school locker at York High School had reportedly been damaged more than once, their home had been egged, and one of their vehicles had been keyed, according to police. There were five Quick Tips through the District 205 school messenger system regarding their daughter that were all found to be false. The complainant stated that a few days prior to the egging incident, the suspect pursued her to date him; however, she was not interested. The parents would like the incident investigated, according to police.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Feb. 13 Police said that while a reporting officer was on patrol near St. Charles and Spring at around 5 p.m., the officer observed three individuals inside a vehicle smoking what appeared to be a cannabis blunt. Upon making contact with the occupants, police said the individuals were

found to be in possession of cannabis. Celine Vidales, 21, of Addison, and Preston Jones, 30, of Wheaton, were cited for possession of cannabis. According to police, Christopher Farrell, 34, of Addison, was found to be in possession of 21 grams of cannabis and an additional 112 grams located in the vehicle. Farrell was charged with one felony count of possession of cannabis.

Police said school staff at York High School reported an odor of cannabis coming from one of the bathrooms on the second floor. According to police, Dylan O’Leary, 18, of Elmhurst, and a juvenile, were located in the bathroom. A search of both O’Leary and the juvenile yielded several vape cartridges containing a brown tar-like substance and a vape pen. O’Leary was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, and the juvenile was cited for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were released to their parents.

Derontae Williams, 24, of Maywood, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended and unlawful operation of an electronic communication device subsequent to a traffic stop near North and I-290 at around 3:28 p.m.

Feb. 12 Michael A. Benjamin, 27, of Streamwood, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, no valid driver’s license and driving without headlights subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Wrightwood at around 2:54 a.m.

Feb. 11 Sherri A. Schaefer, 26, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, no rear registration plate and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Maple at around 1:15 a.m.

Feb. 10 Xavier R. Dickinson, 22, of Champaign, was charged with possession of cannabis and tinted windows, while Darryl Binion, 22, of Brookfield, was charged with possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Hillcrest at around 5:08 p.m.

Feb. 9 Lawrence A. Roper, Jr., 36, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Commonwealth at around 5:59 p.m.

Joanna Sujata, 28, of River Grove, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Belden at around 3:21 p.m. Police said Sujata was found to be in possession of three Xanax pills without a prescription.

Feb. 7 Ethel L. Fisher-Conn, 26, of Maywood, was charged with possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Walnut at around 10:59 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances

Feb. 8 Police said that subsequent to a disabled vehicle near North and Route 83 at around 6:31 a.m., a reporting officer recognized it to be a stolen auto from Batavia. The unnamed suspect stated that he was out of gas, homeless, living out of the van, and had borrowed the van from his employer. The suspect was advised he was under arrest pending the outcome of a possession of a stolen auto investigation.

The suspect was subsequently released to Batavia detectives.

Feb. 11 Kendall Ward, 23, of Chicago, was charged with burglary and retail theft, while Terrell Melvin, 21, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 3:49 p.m. Police said Ward was observed loading a cart with energy drinks and other merchandise. Melvin allegedly exited the store and was communicating with Ward via telephone. According to police, Ward then left the store with the cart full of merchandise without paying.

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of Myrtle at around 2:32 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used his debit card information and placed a phone order for BMW car parts. An investigation is pending.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 9:13 a.m. A complainant told police that the suspects entered the store and loaded up approximately $4,000 worth of alcohol into two shopping carts, exited the store without paying for the merchandise, placed the items into their vehicle and left the scene. An investigation is pending.

Feb. 10-Feb. 11 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 700 block of N. Van Auken. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle and scattered the contents throughout the vehicle. The victim stated that a checkbook was possibly missing from the center console.

Theft was reported in the 300 block of S. Spring. A victim told police that his wallet was stolen while he was at PADS. The wallet contained an Illinois driver’s license, cash, a debit card and two library cards. The driver’s license was entered into LEADS. Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 600 block of Mary Court sometime between the above dates. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle and his unlocked shed located in the back yard. Multiple power tools was taken from the victim’s vehicle and shed.

Feb. 9 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 700 block of N. Larch at around 11:33 a.m.

Police said the manager of a company states that between the hours of 1:44 and 2 a.m., an unknown suspect(s) burglarized two of their trucks and three vans. Video footage shows two individuals wearing gray hoodies and dark colored pants walking into the parking lot from the west.

Feb. 8 Christopher Krieg, 30, of Villa Park, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 6:38 p.m. Police said Krieg took alcohol and left the store without paying.

Feb. 7-Feb. 8 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 300 block of W. Grand. A victim told police that two semi-trailers were entered and had their security seals removed sometime between the above dates. Nothing appeared to be missing; however, one trailer contained sugar. The receiving company will not accept delivery now because it is considered to be a

As the first state in the Midwest to pass a $15 minimum wage, Illinois has shown that our state can be a leader for bold,

progressive change to help all our families get ahead.”

Conroy remains chair of mental health committee State Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, will continue on as chair of the House Mental Health Committee in the 101st General Assembly. She is sponsoring new legislation to incorporate mental health into Illinois schools’ existing health education curriculum.

“As chair of the House Mental Health Committee, I work with mental health advocates, parents and educators to brainstorm new ways we can appropriately address mental health issues in young people,” Conroy said. “The need for increased education for all, but especially for young people, is a constant theme in these discussions.

“We have to talk about mental health and have open and honest conversations with our children if we want to remove the stigma that mental health isn’t important, or that mental illness is something to be ashamed of.

“This bill is one step toward opening those discussions and ensuring that young people receive comprehensive and accurate information on

mental health.”

Currently, school health education curriculum must include topics in human growth and development, disease prevention, public and environmental health, and alcohol and drug use. Conroy’s House Bill 205 adds instruction on the relationship between mental and physical health to existing curriculum topics.

“We have made great strides over the past few years to provide our citizens with the quality of health care they need but there is still much work to be done,” Conroy said. “I am honored to be given the opportunity, privilege and challenge to continue the pursuit in the legislature for strong mental health services.”

Conroy has served as the chair of the House Mental Health Committee, which considers and advances mental health legislation to the House floor, since 2017.

The committee worked to pass important legislation to increase mental health education and expand insurance coverage for mental health testing and diagnoses.

Illinois’ Catholic bishops urge rejecting marijuana legalization

Supporters of legalizing recreational marijuana in Illinois will face stiff opposition this year from leaders of the state’s largest religious denomination.

The six Catholic bishops in Illinois recently issued a joint statement urging lawmakers to reject any attempt to legalize marijuana.

“As lawmakers consider this issue, it is important to remember they are not only debating legalization of marijuana, but also commercialization of a drug into an industry the state will profit from,” the bishops said in the statement. “In seeking the common good, the state should protect its citizens.”

The six bishops are leaders of the

six Catholic dioceses in Illinois, which compose the Catholic Conference of Illinois. CCI is made up of the Archdiocese of Chicago and other dioceses in Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford and Springfield.

CCI Executive Director Bob Gilligan said in an interview that there are roughly 3.5 million Catholics in the state. That’s about 28 percent of the state’s population, making Catholicism the single largest denomination in Illinois, according to the Pew Research Center.

Illinois legalized marijuana for certain medical uses in 2013, and state lawmakers are expected to consider proposals this year to expand the list of conditions for which people can obtain prescriptions for the drug.

Thoughts, musings, peeves, observations and what have you, as I try to work off some of my excess curmudgeon-ness …

• Here’s hoping that one evening, while out and about listening to a live band, members of that band will come up with something more creative to say than “test one-two” during a sound check.

• I’m strongly considering starting a GoFundMe page to purchase jeans, dress slacks, workout pants—all of the above, frankly—for local boys, teens and, for that matter, adult men who wear basketball shorts when it’s 30 degrees (or colder) outside.

• I often hear people refer to a particular activity or trip as being on their bucket list. The only thing on my bucket list is this: I hope I don’t kick the bucket for a very long time.

• Nothing against Barack Obama, but a proposal to rename the Dan Ryan Expressway the Barack Obama Expressway simply doesn’t sound right. It’s like calling the Sears Tower the Willis Tower.

• Why is just about everything on news programs labeled “breaking news?”

• And why is every 6-inch snowstorm treated as if it’s Armageddon?

• Facebook should have a mechanism in place to automatically unfriend anyone from your friends list who posts from a warmer climate when it’s below zero around here just to rub it in.

• Apparently, parking one’s vehicle between two yellow lines or two white lines is too much to ask of some drivers. Perhaps these folks need to go on Amazon.com and order an adult coloring book to re-acquaint themselves

• Many commercials annoy me, but there’s one in particular that causes me to cringe and immediately find another channel once it appears. It’s a commercial that plugs a Website called: educationconnection.com. The commercial shows a mother taking her infant out of a crib, holding the cooing infant in her arms and singing, “Hush little baby, don’t shed a tear … Mama’s going after a new career.”

I’m surprised the poor kid doesn’t start wailing uncontrollably when they hear that.

• The AM airwaves seem to be chockfull of commercials from financial advisors and investment firms with regard to retirement. They ask, “Will you outlive your retirement savings?” (Well, when you get right down to it, I won’t outlive anything.)

“Call us if you have a minimum of $500,000 to invest.” (Sure, right away!) “It’s all about income in retirement.” (Care to weigh in on this, Captain Obvious?)

• While on the topic of commercials, there can’t be a more disgusting commercial on my flat-screen TV these days than the one advertising Skittles. A girl looks at a boy who has pieces of Skittles candy all over his face and arms (similar to someone having chicken pox), and says,

“You’re acting so funny. What’s wrong Billy?” “My doctor says I have Skittles pox,” he replies. The girl then picks a Skittles piece off his face and eats it. Ewww!

• The best commercial? In my opinion, it’s a radio spot during which someone named Big Lou is hawking life insurance. It’s a legitimate company (www.biglou.com). Their signature slogan: “Big Lou is like you … he’s on meds, too.” Sign me up, Big Lou! • A song titled, “All About That Bass,” was a chart-topper a few years ago. Given the obsession most people apparently have with their smartphones, the title (and the lyrics) to this tune should be changed to, “All About That Phone … (’bout that phone, ’bout that phone”).

• When I first heard about Bluetooth, I had to look it up. I was relieved because I thought blue tooth was some type of disorder for which I’d have to see my dentist.

• Heard this the other day: “We’ve got a world of smart phones and dumb people.” True dat!

• I’m a dog lover, but not to the point where I would slap a bumper sticker on my back windshield that says, “I love my grand dogs.” Grand dogs?

• Emphasizing that I’m a dog lover, what’s with having your pooch standing on your lap, looking around, while you drive? I understand the attachment to your dog, but how is texting or talking on your phone deemed to be distracted driving (with citations and fines, if caught) yet Fido jumping around in your lap somehow is not?

• I really don’t want to ask Alexa anything except, perhaps, if she’s single, available and within my age range (since I’m single).

She listened without judgment, was strong in her beliefs and was genuinely interested in others.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a meeting on Feb. 12 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting.

There were no public comments.

Ostwald, Polkow recognized The board recognized York High School Orchestra Director Ray Ostwald, who recently received the Illinois American String Teachers Association (ILASTA) 2019 Outstanding Educator Award. Ostwald, who has been teaching at York for 23 years, was honored at the ILASTA awards banquet in Peoria on Jan. 25.

The board also presented a Shining Star Award to Sandburg Middle School technology assistant David Polkow.

Blended learning pilot program The meeting included a presentation about the blended learning pilot program that will be enacted at York during the 2019-20 school year. York Principal Erin DeLuga

and Mark Cohen, the district’s assistant superintendent of innovation and growth, delivered the presentation.

They described blended learning as a delivery model of instruction that includes flexible use of time, with teacher instruction including a combination of days in which students are in the classroom and out of the classroom. The “out of class” learning days allow a teacher to bring in small groups of students for targeted support. Students can take advantage of technology to continue their classwork and communicate with their teachers and fellow students.

DeLuga and Cohen noted that the blended learning pilot program, which will focus on seniors, will give students an idea of the college experience, where they will have to manage their own time.

The blended learning pilot program at York in the 2019-20 school year will be offered in two senior courses—Chicago Lit and Anatomy/ Physiology. Participation is voluntary; students can opt into a blended section of those courses. There will be other sections of the two courses that won’t feature the blended learning option.

He will replace Jim Woell, who resigning to take a superintendent position in another district. Cohen will officially begin his new position on July 1.

New principal at Fischer approved In its final vote of the meeting, the board unanimously approved the hiring of Irene Villa as the new principal of Conrad Fischer Elementary School. Villa, who will begin as the school’s principal on Aug. 1, will have a base annual salary of about $121,000. She will replace Jane Bailey, who is retiring.

The board will hold its next regular meeting on Feb. 26.

Minimum wage increase heads to Pritzker’s desk Conroy, Cullerton, Glowiak vote yes

A bill to raise Illinois’ minimum wage to $15 by 2025 needs only Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s signature to become law, and his office said he stands ready to act in the coming days.

“Today is a resounding victory for the 1.4 million Illinoisans who will soon get a hard-earned and well-deserved raise,” Pritzker said in a news release last week. “After nearly a decade of delay, I applaud the House and Senate for passing a living wage with the fierce urgency this moment requires.”

The House galleries were filled with cheers from advocates—many of them currently making the minimum wage—as the final 69-47-1 favorable vote became official.

Locally, State Rep. Terra Costa Howard (Glen Ellyn) of the 48th District voted no, while State Rep. Deb Conroy (Villa Park) of the 46th District, State Sen. Tom Cullerton (Villa Park) of the 23rd District and State Sen. Suzy Glowiak (Western Springs) of the 24th District all voted yes.

Prior to the final vote, Pritzker was on the House floor smiling and shaking the hands of Democratic lawmakers—even as Republican Minority Leader Jim Durkin was lamenting the lack of bipartisanship behind the effort in his floor speech.

said, adding Republicans had “basically been told your interests and your thoughts are not valid and we don’t care.”

All in Durkin’s Republican caucus were joined by four Democrats opposing the bill while one, Stephanie Kifowit of Aurora, voted present after two hours of debate.

In their final efforts to derail the fast-tracked bill, Republicans once again shared stories from business owners, universities, colleges and schools within their districts detailing layoffs, closures and increased property taxes.

Rep. Charlie Meier, an Okawville Republican, said the bill would hurt agriculture and smalltown businesses such as groceries.

“The small family farms will suffer the worst with the organic farms, orchards, vineyards, wineries, and the livestock industry be-

ing hit the hardest of all,” Meier said. “This is another Illinois law that will yet again put our region at a disadvantage.”

Rep. Tom Bennett, a Gibson City Republican, cited a National Federation of Independent Businesses study which said Illinois would see 93,000 jobs lost because of the increase. Rep. Terri Bryant, a Murphysboro Republican, said the bill would cost Illinois’ public universities $112 million by the time it is implemented.

Republicans also brought up the hundreds of millions of dollars the bill would add to the state’s expenditures as human service providers—especially nursing homes, 25 of which have closed since 2014 because of inadequate Medicaid reimbursements— universities and other departments request more funding to pay for the higher labor costs.

But Rep. Will Guzzardi, Senate Bill 1’s House sponsor, continued to point to data which shows no impact on job losses when communities see an “incremental” minimum wage increase, and spoke to the dignity of the worker.

“The only way to stop being poor is to have more money,” he said. “And that’s what this legislation is going to do. The working poor in our state are going to have more money. We will treat their labor with the dignity and respect it deserves, and we will allow them to provide a better standard of living for themselves and their families.”

While Republicans continued to argue that the studies cited by Guzzardi predict only an incremental

increase – not an 82 percent spike in six years – many Democrats were convinced by the moral argument.

Rep. Emmanuel “Chris” Welch of Westchester was among them.

“People should not go to work 40 hours a week and still not be able to put food on the table,” he said. “Dr. King said there is nothing but short-sightedness to prevent us from guaranteeing a livable income for every American. Let’s not be shortsighted today.”

Rep. Celina Villanueva, a Chicago Democrat, said further progress was necessary and the fight for 15 was only the “first step” toward worker dignity.

“What we’re really talking about is the dignity and respect of our workers,” she said. “I don’t think 15 is enough. I’ve never thought 15 was enough.”

Guzzardi said 41 percent of all workers in Illinois make less than $15 per hour, and more of those workers are in their 40s, 50s and 60s than are younger than 25; and 48 percent of African Americans and 61 percent of Latinos make less than $15 per hour.

Those minimum-wage workers will begin seeing their increases in January 2020, when the minimum rate goes from $8.25 to $9.25 before increasing to $10 on July 1, 2020, and $11 on Jan. 1 2021. After that, it would increase by $1 every January until it hits $15 in 2025.

For Iashea Cross, a personal assistant and low-wage worker in the health care field who was in the gallery from Chicago, the bill means a brighter outlook in the future.

“I might be able to let go of that second job in the future that I have just to make ends meet,” she said. “For me, the passage of this bill means that finally we are being recognized as the working people of the state that help it continue to move forward.”

The bill also maintains a tip credit, which allows employers to pay tipped workers 60 percent of the minimum wage if tips make up the other 40 percent. A training wage for teen seasonal workers is also part of the bill, and that wage will top out at $13 per hour.

A tax credit for businesses with less than 50 full-time equivalent employees is also part of the final bill, starting at 25 percent of the difference between the current minimum wage and an employee’s wage in the final quarter of the previous calendar year. It would decrease by 4 percent each year until it hits 5 percent in the final two years.

DMMC issues 2019 Legislative Action agenda Priorities include protecting local revenue, infrastructure needs

The DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (DMMC) outlined its annual legislative agenda for the 2019 state legislative session, stressing the importance of protecting local revenue for essential community services and the need for a statewide capital bill.

At its annual Legislative Reception & Dinner, DMMC President and Wood Dale Mayor Nunzio Pulice addressed the group’s 33 members representing more than one million residents.

“We are prepared to work with the new administration and our state legislators to solve issues that are of critical importance to our residents,”

Pulice said. “The stress on the state’s budget in recent years has resulted in local governments having significantly less revenue to provide essential services for their residents.”

Pulice noted that municipalities have seen reductions in state shared revenues over the last several years and continue to be concerned about those revenues into the future.

As part of its Legislative Action Program, DMMC is also advocating for: 1) a capital bill to address area infrastructure needs and maintain local roads, bridges and water facilities while creating jobs; 2) consolidating public safety pen-

sions to reduce unfunded pension liabilities and stabilize retirement systems; 3) preserving local authority so municipalities can make their own decisions when it comes to franchising, zoning, permitting and licensing, local code enforcement and regulating business activities; and 4) changes to the state’s workers’ compensation law to preserve benefits for municipal employees and lower costs for residents.

The DMMC promotes sound public policy initiatives and innovative solutions to make local government work effectively for DuPage residents.

Today, 77 percent of opioid prescription medications taken by new users are obtained from a friend or relative. Sixty-two percent of teens who admit taking medication for non-medical reasons say they get drugs from medicine cabinets in their homes.

As part of its Opioid Task Force initiative, Edward-Elmhurst Health is launching a new Medication Take-Back program to provide accessible, safe places for the public to dispose of dangerous medication.

Safe medication disposal kiosks have been installed in the vestibule of door 28 near the Emergency Department (just to the right of the main ED entrance) at Elmhurst Hospital, 155 E. Brush Hill Rd., and near the South Lobby (in the walkway between the South parking garage and South Lobby off of Osler Dr.) of Edward Hospital, 801 S. Washington St., Naperville, and Both are accessible to the public 24/7 365 days a year. The program is partially funded by the Edward and Elmhurst Medical Executive Committees.

“We want to help our community protect their families and friends by providing an accessible, friendly and safe place to dispose of dangerous medications,” says Dr. Daniel Sullivan, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Elmhurst Hospital. “We’re also protecting the environment by reducing drug residue in water tables. Studies show that 46 million Americans in 24 major metropolitan areas have pharmaceutical chemicals and hormones in their drinking water.”

Economic indicators report shows strong growth opportunities for DuPage Low unemployment, industrial vacancy rate opens doors for development

Choose DuPage Economic Development Alliance has released its findings from their 2018 Annual Economic Indicators Report, including metrics showing positive economic growth achieved on several fronts over the past year. DuPage County is home to nearly 75,000 businesses providing more than 650,000 jobs and continues to attract a variety of industries from food manufacturers to nationally-ranked healthcare institutions. New businesses are relocating to make DuPage County their home, while local industries continue to expand their footprint.

Highlights from the Economic Indicators Report: • Closing out the year, DuPage County again had the lowest unemployment rate in the region at 2.9%; lower than both the state of Illinois (4.2%) and United States (3.7%).

• DuPage County’s top job opportunities in 2018 were reported to be in retail sales, customer service and labor, while the fastest-growing industries (by employment) were healthcare and social assistance, and

professional, scientific, and technical services.

• Office vacancy rates dropped 1.5% from 15.8% at the end of 2017 to 14.2% at the end of 2018; industrial vacancy rates fell from 5.1% this time last year, to 4.4%. DuPage County continues to have one of the lowest industrial vacancy rates in the region.

Data shows DuPage County continues to have the lowest industrial vacancy rate in the region running at 4.4%. DuPage office vacancy rates have continually declined and are holding steady at 14.2%. Space is being acquired by new businesses moving into the area as well as the expansion of existing DuPage businesses.

During 2018, Aldi expanded its corporate offices into Naperville, leasing 113,000 square-feet in the Naperville Woods Office Center. Additionally, Elkay Manufacturing signed a new lease for 47,073 square-feet of office space in Downers Grove.

District 205 announces Elmhurst Library programs Moyer salary adjustment

During a meeting held on Tuesday, Feb. 12, School District 205 Board members voted unanimously during the meeting to adjust the base annual salary of District 205 Superintendent David Moyer for the current school year. The board voted to increase Moyer’s base salary for the 2018-19 school year from about $233,000 to about $241,500. The increase will be payable in equal installments over the remaining regular pay periods for the current school year.

Board member Chris Blum stated some of the district’s successes since the board hired Moyer almost four years ago. Blum also said that transition in leadership positions can be extremely disruptive. Board member Jim Collins said the board hired Moyer at a submarket rate of pay

four years ago. The increase, Collins said, puts Moyer closer to the average salary for a superintendent in a district the size and caliber of District 205.

Contract extended, base salary increased Moments after approving the raise for Moyer in the current school year, the board voted unanimously to adopt a resolution approving a multiyear contract for Moyer from July 1 of this year until June 30, 2023. The new contract replaces Moyer’s previous contract, which was not set to expire until June 30, 2020. Collins said it’s been the board’s recent practice to offer a new contract to the superintendent one year before the existing contract expires.

The new contract provides Moyer with a base annual salary of nearly $250,000.

York boys swimming team fourth at West Suburban Silver meet Jensen wins varsity 500 free title; Logan wins JV diving competition

The York boys swimming team placed fourth at the recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet.

The Dukes had 193 points. Hinsdale Central won the conference title with 295 points. York was fourth at the JV level with 178 points and fourth at the frosh-soph level with 155 points.

In the frosh-soph 50 free, York’s Kessler Dayton was seventh with a time of 24.89. Matthew Billenstein won the athletes with disabilities 50 free conference title with a time of 1:00.88.

Nick Ward was seventh in the varsity 50 with a time of 23.65. Will Yasdick was eighth in 24.05. Michael McKenna was sixth in the JV 50 with a time of 25.72. Carson Hicks was eighth at 26.49.

Cameron Mullis was eighth in the

frosh-soph 100 with a time of 55.33.

Connor Groya was seventh in the varsity 100 with a time of 51.38, while Ben Harrington was eighth in 51.46. McKenna was seventh in the JV 100 in 57.37.

Daniel Kowalski finished eighth in the JV 200 with a time of 2:09.33.

Groya was fifth in the varsity 200 with a time of 1:52.08. Josh Allen was eighth in 1:58.07. Mullis was eighth in the frosh-soph 200 in 2:03.31.

Max Shemroske was eighth in the JV 500 with a time of 6:00.11. Jay Jensen won the 500 varsity conference title with a time of 4:53.73, easily outdistancing the second-place-finishing time of 4:57.31. Jacob Dunlap was seventh in 5:09.08. Ryan Marti was fifth in the frosh-soph 500 in 5:17.51.

IC Catholic Prep’s Vargas wins two matches at state wrestling York girls bowling team competes at state meet

IC Catholic Prep’s David Vargas was plenty busy at the recent Class 1A state wrestling finals in Champaign on the campus of the University of Illinois.

Vargas went 2-2 in the 220-pound tournament in the Class 1A division.

He finished the season with a 30-8 record.

Vargas opened competition with a loss via fall in 1:19 to Princeton’s Chase Tatum, but came back in the wrestleback bracket and recorded a win via fall in 2:31 over Garrett Wright of Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley.

Vargas then was an 18-8 major-decision winner against Hoopston Area’s Anthony Colunga.

Vargas was eliminated from the tournament after a loss via fall to

Farmington’s Broc Shymansky.

York wrestling York’s Antonio Gutierrez wrestled in the recent Class 3A state wrestling finals meet in Champaign.

Gutierrez opened action in the 145-pound division with a 17-0 loss to Trevor Chumbley of Marmion Academy. Chumbley went on to win the Class 3A state title.

Gutierrez was eliminated after a loss via fall in 2:45 to John Ridle of Algonquin Jacobs. Gutierrez finished the season with a 35-12 record.

Youthful York girls basketball team reaches regional-championship game Molis, Krissinger earn all-conference accolades

The York girls basketball team reached a Class 4A regional-championship game, dropping a 40-29 decision to Wheaton-Warrenville South.

“It was a lot closer than the final score,” said York coach Brandon Collings.

“Wheaton-Warrenville South shot 12 or 13 of 14 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

We played well. We had a two-point lead at half. We couldn’t catch a break. We had several layups go off the rim and a couple of open looks on 3s not go in.”

Wheaton-Warrenville South ended up shooting 19 of 22 from the freethrow line in the game, while York

was 0-for-1 from the foul line for four quarters.

York reached the final after a 3628 win over Elk Grove in the semifinals. “We were down 10-0 to start the game and 15-5 at the end of the first quarter,” Collings noted.

York then turned up the screws defensively and held Elk Grove to 13 points over the final three quarters.

“We picked up the intensity,” said Collings. “We had a couple early looks at a couple 3s and we missed some shots. Once we got rolling, we upped the defensive intensity. We shut them down defensively and took the lead back offensively. Elk Grove sat back in a 2-3 zone. A lot of teams play more of a 3-2 zone against us.

It took a little adjusting and then we attacked them better in the second half.”

The Dukes finished the season 1812 overall.

“I am happy with how we played

this year,” said Collings. “We are young. I’m not sure there is another team in the state that played for a regional title with a starting lineup that had three girls who played on the sophomore team last year and two that came off the freshman team last year. We had several girls miss a lot of time with injuries. Maddy Stark missed 26 games and then played a game and a half at the end. Kiah Rufus missed 26 games and Kathleen Levins was with us some of the season and then was out. We had basically one senior coming off the bench the majority of the year. We are a young team that played a really tough schedule. We let some games get away because of our inexperience. We finished 18-12 and could easily have had a 22-8 season with seniors not playing much at all. As a coach, a 22-8 season is very possible going forward. We’re excited about what we can accomplish next year.”

The juniors in the starting lineup included Sara Krissinger, Sydney Fuglsang and Bridget Los. Sophomores in the starting lineup were Kaitlyn Kjome and Sydney Molis. Junior Carley Schwartz was the first guard off the bench and Megan Juneman was the first post player off the bench with senior Emily Rohman also coming off the bench.

“We finished third in the confer-

ence and went 18-12 overall,” said Collings. “I think some people had even higher expectations and I think not everybody realized how talented our junior and sophomore classes are.

We are looking to make some waves next season and be a frontrunner for the conference title hopefully.”

Cycling Foundation presents scholarship gift to Elmhurst College Funds raised at annual Elmhurst Cycling Classic

The DuPage Cycling Foundation recently presented Elmhurst College with a $3,000 donation for scholarships, part of the money raised from the foundation’s annual Superior Ambulance Elmhurst Cycling Classic.

Each summer, amateur and professional cyclists from around the country take part in the day-long bicycle racing event, whose course encircles the College campus. Proceeds from the event benefit local causes and nonprofit organizations.

When life gives you fabric softener

It was a go to the store for laundry detergent come home with fabric softener kind of day.

And it happened to me. Of course it did.

But hey, everyone has bad days.

Not a one of us has a corner on that market.

And bad days are in the eye of the beholder. I think about this when I’m having a bad day, but sometimes I don’t want to listen to my own good advice. Sometimes I just get off on feeling sorry for myself and my no-good supremelybad day.

I think sometimes we have to feel lousy once in awhile. It makes us appreciate the better times. The days when our socks match. When we locate the car keys without even trying. Ditto that for sunglasses.

Sunday Fundays. When we get all green lights on our way to work.

When we go to throw the washed load into the dryer and our spouse has beat us to the task.

When the sun is shining on the coldest of winter days. When we find the one can of chicken noodle soup left in the pantry. When we start (or finish) a really great book.

Double ditto that for a Netflix series. When the family is all home for supper. Anything that makes us laugh from the belly. When we go to the store for laundry detergent and actually come home with the goods.

Which brings us full circle back to the fabric softener.

What is it with labels these days?

There are so many details. So many choices. Why not make the fabric softener label a different color (or something) than the detergent label? When I’m shopping I don’t want to look at details. I don’t want to pay attention at all, but it’s become a necessity. I consider a trip to the grocery store successful if I don’t come home with an inadvertent can or two of low sodium green beans.

But you know what? It happens.

There are an unlimited number of grocery snafus lurking in the aisles.

Choosing the mega strong toilet paper when you were trying for mega soft. (There’s a packaging conundrum I don’t have the time or space to address). Salt without the iodine. Buying the regular paper towels versus the pick-a-size.

Crunchy peanut butter when you wanted creamy. Those green beans I alluded to earlier.

Stuff happens. It’s going to happen and it’s going to happen to you. It’s going to happen to all of us.

What we do with it defines who we are.

Let’s just say (hypothetically speaking) you went to the store for laundry detergent and came home with fabric softener. Unlikely, I know. But some silly soul may have experienced this improbable reality.
