Timothy Christian Schools names new K-8 principal Hinsdale elementary school leader Justin Horne tabbed for position

Timothy Christian Schools has had a grand total of 22 principals at the K-8 level since the school first opened its doors in 1911. And only six have led those efforts since the elementary school building was dedicated in Elmhurst in 1972.

Justin Horne is now part of that elite fraternity.

Timothy Christian recently announced Horne’s hiring for the 202021 school year. He replaces Dr. Tim Hoeksema, who will retire after a distinguished career in June.

Horne is currently the principal at Monroe Elementary School in Hinsdale, operating under District 181

auspices. Monroe is both a Blue Ribbon and Green Ribbon school.

“We were incredibly impressed with a very strong pool of candidates, and yet the search committee and the school board were both unanimous in hiring Justin,” Timothy Christian Superintendent Matt Davidson said. “He is an educational leader and influencer. Justin has a throwback work ethic, he loves kids and he loves Jesus.”

Horne double majored in elementary education and psychology at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and then received his master’s of education in administration at Loyola University.

He also holds the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification, the highest certification a teacher can hold.

“His experience, vision and ‘sense of adventure’ in trying new ideas would give an opportunity for the faculty and students to really feel

folded into the greater Timothy community in a meaningful way,” said Timothy middle school science teacher Heather Hopek, who served on the search committee for Hoeksema’s replacement.

Lynn Van Stee, Timothy’s director of MTSS, was most encouraged

by Horne’s ideas and his hard work toward building community and supporting teachers.

“He gave a lot of evidence of being a strong communicator, competent educator and a collaborative leader,” said Van Stee, also part of the search committee.

Davidson called Horne an educational leader, influencer and force.

“Justin builds trust and moves people through developing authentic re-

lationships,” he said. “He believes in the value of hard work, the power of collaboration, and that love remains our greatest motivation. Above all, he is committed to developing lifelong learners and servant leaders who fully live out their purpose in the world for Christ.

“Justin is following a long line of champions. Those who served before him have kept the main thing the main thing. Now God has called upon Justin Horne to serve, to take the baton and continue the race set before us in the mission of Timothy Christian Schools.”

Horne and his wife, Becky, have two children, Catherine, 7, and Nathaniel, 11. Horne will start work at Timothy this summer.

for at the time was losing its office space. When the company was acquired, we needed an alternative because we were renting the space. By then, we had a newborn and a 3-yearold in the Lakeview [neighborhood of Chicago], so how in the heck am I supposed to work from home?!”

Goodrich looked for an outside workspace without much luck.

“I tried to work at places like Panera Bread, then I thought, why don’t I open a shared office space here?” she said. “Well, it took two years … and lots of perseverance, but we got there. Elmhurst is a great location; we have the new FCC [fitness center], the Marke right here. The location had a first floor available and was already an office. I had to figure out how we could develop it into an event space as well as offices.

“It’s been a real collaborative effort. I’ve been able to partner with local companies and businesses.”

We have leaders and all this brain power. but it’s not being shared and there’s a lot of subject matter experts in Elmhurst.

Elmhurst resident Mary Deardurff celebrated her 99th birthday on Feb. 3 surrounded by family and friends including some of her 32 great-grandchildren. Her family provided some information about her life: Mary was born in Newark, Ohio, to Agnes and Alfred Oberfield. To provide for their family of 10 during the Great Depression, her father moved them onto a farm in Newark.

Mary’s fondest memory of farm living was her daily egg gathering.

Mary and Jack married in 1945 and had five sons and a daughter. They relocated to Illinois in 1969. Later, Mary moved to Elmhurst to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Feb. 12 A reporting officer responded to the 100 block of Schiller at around 5:57 p.m. for a report of a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim’s father who stated the victim became irate and broke a chair.

July 1, 2019-Feb. 9 A complainant in the 300 block of Commonwealth told police that while walking his dog on an electronic leash, the suspect yelled at him for not using a leash and threatened him and his dog.

The suspect related that the complainant’s dog is not friendly, has been approached by the unleashed dog in the past and is concerned the dog will attack.

Feb. 6 A 24-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 600 block of W. Crockett at around 2:07 p.m. Police said officers responded to the report of a domestic between a father and son. It was learned that suspect allegedly had been drinking alcohol, pushed the victim, grabbed his arm and knocked the hat off his head.

York at around 8:47 a.m. According to police, a complainant stated that the three suspects were seen allegedly taking a high-value amount of items from the pharmacy section. Police said the suspects were seen fleeing the scene towards I-290. They were later located and taken into custody.

CALL 800-222-TIPS charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of adult use cannabis and speeding near North and Melrose at around 9:23 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Gonzalez was found to be in possession of a controlled substance and cannabis which was not in a sealed, odor proof, child proof container.

Feb. 8 Erlyn Carrera, 21, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver and disobeying a traffic control device near First and York at around 8:59 p.m.

Jovanny Carrera, 29, of Bellwood, was issued citations for possession of adult use cannabis, disobeying a traffic control signal and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Berkley and St. Charles at around 5:23 p.m.

Feb. 6 Marlen Cervantes-Rodri, 29, of Chicago, was issued citations for unlawful use of adult cannabis in a vehicle, no insurance and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Commonwealth at around 10:10 a.m.

Selling alcohol or DUI, illegal tobacco to a minor transportation of alcohol, Feb. 11 Police said the following individuals were isopen alcohol in public, sued citations for sale of alcohol to a minor: Leslie Madrigal, 25, of Elmhurst in the 600 block of consumption of alcohol W. St. Charles at around 6:29 p.m.; and Kevin P. Wurtz, 61, of Villa Park in the 600 block of W. by a minor, St. Charles at around 6:48 p.m. public intoxication Police said the following individuals were Feb. 7 James B. Long III, 36, of Addison, was charged with aggravated DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident and no insurance subsequent to a traffic crash near Spring and St. Charles at around 12:17 p.m.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance Feb. 11 Police said a reporting officer near Second and Willow observed Suspect 1 conduct a drug transaction with Suspect 2 at around 3:51 p.m.

Suspect 2 was cited for possession of adult use cannabis in a vehicle and possession of an alternative nicotine product, and was released to her mother. The officer made contact with Suspect 1 and his mother, where he admitted to selling cannabis to Suspect 2. Suspect 1 will be referred to the DuPage County Juvenile Probation Department.

Feb. 10 Erika J. Gonzalez, 23, of Chicago, was

issued citations for sale of tobacco to a minor: Lucy Sanchez, 59, of Hillside in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 4:45 p.m.; and Joseph Gilbertson, 30, of Villa Park in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 5:14 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances Feb. 8 A complainant in the 300 block of Highview told police at around 9:34 p.m. that a suspect sent a Snapchat message to her daughter. The message stated: “who tryna buy edibles from my dude. Hmu.” with a picture of a Rice Krispies treat wrapped up in plastic wrap. This concerned the complainant, as she believes the suspect is possibly selling drugs to children.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Feb. 12 Joseph Michael Coughlin, 32, of Joliet; Jerry A. Dixon, 59, of Chicago; and Kyren D. Olliver, 47, of Maywood, were charged with felony retail theft and burglary at a store in the 600 block of

Jan. 13-Feb. 12 Theft was reported in the 500 block of W. Gladys. A reporting officer spoke with the victim who reported two rings have gone missing from her home sometime between the above dates. The victim suspects a cleaning company.

The case is pending investigation.

Feb. 2-Feb. 11 A victim in the 200 block of Myrtle told police that while he and his wife were out of town, an unknown suspect(s) attempted to gain access to his home sometime between the above dates.

The victim found that a key had been broken off inside of the dead bolt lock.

Feb. 10 Identity theft was reported at a business in the 100 block of N. York at around 4:38 p.m. A complainant told police that he owns multiple companies and discovered fraudulent checks were written on three of his business accounts.

An investigation is pending.

Feb. 9 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 5:05 p.m. A victim told police that he was unable to link his debit card with his newly acquired Chime Banking account.

Chime denied the victim’s request because the victim’s Social Security number was already registered to an existing account with the bank.

The victim was provided information on how to protect himself against identity theft.

Theft was reported in the 100 block of N. York at around 5:43 p.m. Police said the victim is an employee at a local restaurant and reports he left his unattended wallet at the server’s station.

Upon returning to the station, his wallet containing two ID cards and $400 in cash was missing.

The server’s station is a high-traffic area for employees and customers.

A vehicle was reported stolen in the 600 block of N. York at around 12:45 a.m. The victim told police he is a pizza delivery driver. He related that he left his vehicle unattended and running in the parking lot of the business. Upon returning to the parking lot, he found his vehicle missing. The vehicle was entered into LEADs. Feb. 7 Christina Chavira, 42, of Broadview, was charged with felony retail theft and possession of burglary tools at a store in the 300 block of S Route 83 at around 2:32 p.m. Loss prevention told police that Chavira allegedly concealed approximately $340 worth of jewelry and clothing, and left the store without paying. Police said Chavira used wire snips to remove security tags.

Sammy Gray, 30, of Lombard, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 6:20 p.m. Police said Gray attempted to take merchandise and leave without paying.

Feb. 6 Myles D. Thomas, 18, of Chicago, was issued a citation for false use of an ID card at around 11:32 p.m. Police said an officer responded for a citizen assist to check identification of a subject seeking admission to a bar. According to police, Thomas was found to be in possession of a fictitious ID. Theft was reported at a fitness center in the 600 block of N. York at around 10:07 a.m. A victim told police that during his workout, he left his Adidas bag in an unsecured locker in the men’s locker room. Upon returning to the locker, he

found that his bag containing his Illinois ID card, Social Security card, clothing and two cups had been stolen.

Top crime news After alleged burglary attempt, suspect found hiding in victim’s vehicle On Feb. 6, Isaish K. Smith, 23, of Schaumburg, was charged with five counts of attempted burglary to a vehicle and criminal trespass to a vehicle in the 200 block of Boyd at around 12:59 a.m. Police said while an officer was on patrol, the officer observed a suspicious person who subsequently fled on foot. According to police, Smith was tracked down and located hiding inside of the victim’s vehicle. He was found to have been attempting to burglarize unlocked vehicles in the area, police said.

Theft attempted at laundromat, car wash Commercial burglary was reported at a business in the 900 block of N. York at around 3:12 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect entered a laundromat and subsequently went into the car wash section of the building.

The suspect attempted to pry open an office window, but was unsuccessful. The suspect walked down a hallway and was able to gain entry to the office where he removed four envelopes. The suspect left northbound in York in a silver Ford Excursion.

Suspect nabbed in alleged gas station theft Sometime between the dates of Feb. 4-Feb. 6, theft was reported at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York. A complainant told police that they had an employee in the back room who had stolen cash, cigarettes and food sometime between the above dates. Police said the suspect admitted to stealing food and cigarettes. The suspect was released without charges pending the gas station’s investigation of the incidents.

Man asks suspect to retrieve his wallet; next day, debit card has charges On Feb. 2, theft was reported in the 700 block of Geneva at around 10:17 a.m. A victim told police that he left his wallet containing his debit card inside of his locked vehicle. He asked the unknown suspect—described as a female between 43 and 48 years old, weighing around 175 pounds with long brown hair—to retrieve an item from his vehicle, and the following day, learned that his debit card was missing. His bank account reflected $818.32 of unauthorized charges. A reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect with no results.

Mardi Gras party to support St. Baldrick’s

On Saturday, Feb. 22 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., there will be a Mardi Gras themed celebration at Church of Our Savior, 116 E. Church St., Elmhurst, as a fundraiser for Saint Baldrick’s.

Worldwide, 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. In the U.S., more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease—more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and diabetes combined.

By working closely with leading pediatric oncologists, Saint Baldrick’s determines the most promising research to fund and create funding priorities to make the greatest impact for children with cancer. There will be food and a raffle and some volunteers will be getting their heads shaved.

10 most overplayed songs (or annoying, or both) by bands in the ’burbs There are plenty of talented cover bands in the suburbs, but a few too many of them must be sharing the same set list.

How about playing a little Wang Chung, Chaka Khan or Kajagoogoo?

(Bonus points if you remember Kajagoogoo from the 1980s.) Or even Mr. Mister or Sister Sledge? Anything, except for what’s listed below: Honorable mention: “Uptown Funk” (Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson 2014)—The song that made Jackson, Miss. famous and introduced Michelle Pfeiffer to a new generation. Someone suggested in a tweet they were going to name their first son Bruno. Since I’ve heard one too many parents refer to their sons as “buddy” in the supermarket (“c’mon buddy”; “let’s go buddy”), hearing a parent say “c’mon Bruno” would be refreshing.

10. “Livin’ on a Prayer” (Bon Jovi 1986)—I like Bon Jovi, and the intro to their signature tune rocks.

That said, don’t you get tired of hearing about Tommy being down on his luck because the union’s on strike, and his significant other, Gina, crying in the night and dreaming of running away? Perhaps Gina could use a hug, but in this case, Tommy needs to exercise some tough love. “Hey Gina, it’s time to work the diner all day and bring home your pay for love, so suck it up, buttercup.”

9. “Can’t Stop the Feeling” (Justin Timberlake 2016)—To me, “Can’t Stop the Feeling” is the heir apparent to Pharrell Williams’ feelgood “Happy.” Remember that one?

Frankly, it made me feel grumpy every time I heard it. (So does “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”)

8. “Footloose” (Kenny Loggins 1984)—”Ooh-whee, Marie … whoah, Milo.” Admittedly, I get a kick out of watching all you lovely ladies trip over yourselves in a stampede to the dance floor once that familiar guitar riff to “Footloose” commences.

3. “I Will Survive” (Gloria Gaynor 1978)—It’s been said that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

I beg to differ. Fellas, you don’t want to get caught on the dance floor when the band cranks up the Women’s National Anthem (just trust me on this one). Once I hear … “First I was afraid; I was petrified” … that’s my cue to take cover in my safe space (i.e., the men’s restroom) and curl up into a fetal position until I get the allclear sign.

2. “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” (Journey 1981)—Journey has produced several monster hits, yet every band believes it’s their civic duty to cover this worn-out oldie. (I even heard a country-western band play it recently, for crying out loud!) I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction: “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” has been around nearly 40 years.

If just a small-town girl, living in a lonely world, hasn’t crossed paths by now with just a city boy, born and raised in south Detroit, on the midnight train goin’ anywhere, they’re never going to meet, so Please Stop Believin’.

1. “Sweet Caroline” (Neil Diamond 1969)— Friends in a social group I regularly attend ask why I’m often late for events. It’s because I hold out hope that the house band will have already played arguably the most annoying song of all time by the time I arrive. “Sweet Caroline … bop-bop-bop.” More like “Sweet Caroline … blah-blah-blah.”

York’s 2020 National Merit finalists announced Elmhurst Community Unit School District D205 congratulates nine York High School seniors, who were announced on Friday, Feb. 14 as Finalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. The seniors are: John Devine, Timothy Hradil, Aaron Ludkowski, Dylan Mahoney, Kol Rollins, James Sampson, Allison Splitstone, Matthew Splitstone and Paige Szipszky.

The students will be honored by the D205 Board of Education this

spring. These York seniors have the opportunity to be considered for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million. National Merit Scholarship winners of 2020 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.

More than 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Elmhurst AAUW seeks scholarship applicants The AAUW Elmhurst Area Branch is offering two scholarships of $2,500 each to women from the communities of Elmhurst, Addison, Bensenville, Berkeley, Northlake, Oak Brook, or Villa Park who need financial assistance to continue education at the undergraduate or graduate level.

An applicant may be studying full or part time. Besides being from one of the above communities, the applicant must be continuing her education after completing at least 12 credit hours at an accredited college or university and be age 25 or older.

The AAUW mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research at both the national and local levels. Funds for these scholarships come from the Used Book Sale that AAUW hosts each summer. The 2019 Used Book Sale was so successful that the organization is pleased to be able to offer 2 scholarships once again this year.

Shyovitz to give annual Heschel Lecture at Elmhurst College The spiritual relationship between human beings and the natural world is a key—but often overlooked—element of the Jewish tradition.

On Thursday, March 5 beginning at 7:30 p.m., David Shyovitz, director of Northwestern University’s Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies, will present “A Brief History of Teva: God and Nature in the Jewish Tradition,” this year’s Abraham Joshua Heschel Lecture. It will be held in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Drawing on a range of classical texts and traditions, the lecture will explore the historical development, and contemporary relevance, of Jewish environmental ethics.

Shyovitz also is an associate professor of history at Northwestern whose research and teaching focus on pre-modern Jewish history, with particular emphases on Jewish-Christian relations, Jewish thought and the development of Jewish law.

100+ Women Who Care group gives to Adult Christian Care Kelli Comise, OTR/L, CDP, executive director from Adult Christian Care (ACC), attended the 100+ Women Who Care meeting on Monday, Feb. 3 to thank the group for their donation of $14,500 to the program.

Adult Christian Care (ACC) was awarded the most recent donation from 100+ Women Who Care to create an art program for their clients. ACC is a memory care day program, serving Elmhurst and the surrounding community since 1978. They provide a safe, structured, and stimulating day alternative for seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

“We are overjoyed with 100+WWC’s generous donation,” said Comise. “This will give ACC the opportunity to rejuvenate our art program, which will offer clients new ways to share thoughts, express emotions and communicate with others.”

Tom and Sue Westhoff honored by ICGS On Friday, Jan. 31, the Immaculate Conception Grade School community gathered to celebrate the close of Catholic Schools Week 2020 with Mass. At the conclusion of the liturgy, ICGS Principal Cathy Linley announced the two individuals being honored with the school’s 2020 Distinguished Graduate Award. Tom Westhoff and Sue Bachman Westhoff, Elmhurst residents and IC parishioners, were recognized “for taking the lessons learned from their years of Catholic education and putting them into action by serving their community in a myriad of ways.”

Tom Westhoff’s parents moved to Elmhurst in 1936. Tom attended ICGS from 1st to 8th grade and then continued his education at IC high school. From there he attended Villanova University, where he earned a degree in French. After teaching English in France for several years, Tom joined the U.S. Army and worked in Army Intelligence for three years. He then attended John Marshall Law School and practiced corporate law until he went into private practice.

Sue’s Catholic education took an interesting turn when, in June of 1956, the Diocese of Joliet announced that a new Catholic parish, Mary Queen of Heaven, would be established on the north side of El-

mhurst. In December of that year, ground was broken for a new church and its new school opened its doors in the fall of 1957.

Because the Bachman family lived within the new boundaries of that parish, Sue had to transfer from IC Grade School to Mary Queen of Heaven for 7th and 8th grades.

Her father, a cabinet-maker, did extensive work on the altar and interior of that church. When it was completed, Father O’Keefe, the pastor, gifted a statue of the Infant of Prague to Sue’s father. Several years ago, that statue was given to ICGS

by Sue Bachman Westhoff.

After grade school, Sue attended IC High School (now IC Catholic Prep) and then received her B.A. from Rosary College (now Dominican University). She went on to earn her Masters in Educational Administration from Northern Illinois University and served as a Catholic schoolteacher for 13 years, six of those as the art teacher at ICGS. The Westhoffs, who were married in 1976, sent their daughter, Charlotte Westhoff Faris, to IC for both grade school and high school as well.

In addition to serving on the school boards at both the grade School and the high school, the Westhoffs have been actively involved in the parish’s choir, the art and environment com-

mittee, and attend daily Mass.

Remarkably, over the years, Tom and Sue have also served as foster parents to 17 babies.

Prior to presenting the award, Linley remarked that Tom and Sue Westhoff are “a perfect example of what it means to live your Catholic faith.”

“Their married life has centered around their love of God, their appreciation of His many blessings, and their sense of responsibility to serve Him by making our world a better place,” she said. Linley also pointed out that because Mary Queen of Heaven no longer has an elementary school (they do have early education and kindergarten enrichment programs), ICGS has a number of students who, like Sue, are a part of both Catholic parish communities.

Upon receiving the award, Tom Westhoff thanked IC Pastor, Father Tom Paul, Principal Linley, as well as the Sisters of St. Agnes who taught the students of IC for so many years.

He also spoke of being born on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Dec. 8, 1944, and being baptized weeks later on Christmas Eve at IC by then-pastor, Monsignor William Plunkett.

The Distinguished Graduate celebration concluded with a reception for the Westhoffs and their family and friends in the IC rectory.

DOES DIET AFFECT CATARACT DEVELOPMENT?

While “cataract” is primarily an age-related condition, diet may play a role in this clouding of the eye lens. Some studies have indicated that people who consume large amounts of fruits and vegetables and small quantities of foods containing saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium are less likely to develop cataracts than people with not-so-healthy diets. In addition, there is research suggesting that having high blood levels of “lutein” (an important nutrient found in leafy greens, tomatoes, squash, and carrots) and “zeaxanthin” (a powerful, natural antioxidant found in leafy greens, bell peppers, corn, and eggs) is also associated with a lower cataract risk. George Leveille, 73 George Leveille, a lifetime resident of Elmhurst, passed away recently at the age of 73. He was a Vietnam Army Veteran in the 1st Air Cav; retired Elmhurst fireman; former owner LaVell Electric; beloved husband of Catherine “Cathy,” nee McJohn; loving father of Denise (Scott) Turner, Mary Kay McCann and George “Geo” (Jen) Leveille; proud grandfather of Aurora, Callie and Paxtyn Turner, Morgan and Katie McCann; cherished great-grandfather of Lennox Turner; dear brother of Margaret Ann (Mick) Gley, James (Diane) Leveille, Marilyn (Dominick) DiBella, Forrest (Cindy) Leveille and the late Nancy (the late Mike) Cahill, the late Barbara (Joseph) Slama and the late Michael (Karen) Leveille; cherished son of the late George and the late Margaret; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. George loved to spend time in the outdoors - whether it was fishing in Canada, Wisconsin or Florida or in his own backyard caring for the Koi pond and garden railroad. After retirement, he took care of others through his volunteer ministry at Meals on Wheels. George was a loving and beloved man whose devotion to friends and family will be missed. The Ludington Splash Pad at Copeyon Park is scheduled to open spring 2020. This splashpad with a non-slip surface will feature a variety of showers, streams, mists and sprays for recreational water play and it will be ADA-accessible from the parking lot.

A new par-3 golf course is slated to open in summer 2020 at Forest Dunes Golf Club in Roscommon.

The yet-to-be-named course, designed by Keith Rhebb and Riley Johns, features 10 holes between 50 and 150 yards.

The Copper Harbor Trails Club will construct several new mountain biking trails for the 2020 season in the Upper Peninsula.

An easy crushed-gravel trail connecting the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge with Manganese Falls will stretch for more than two miles through mature forests with scenic views over Lake Superior.

Plans are underway to build 3.25 miles of single-track along the Keweenaw Point Trail, helping bridge the gap to the rugged shores of High Rock Bay. Upgrades to the Copper Harbor Trails network for 2020 will potentially include redeveloping the expert-level jump trail, Flying Squirrel; installing interpretive signage; and continuing work on the final phase of the Keweenaw Point Trail in the wilderness of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

York boys basketball team takes full control of WSC Silver Dukes win at Oak Park-River Forest for first time since 2015; Now have 2-game lead in league

At Oak Park-River Forest, York won 53-42 on the strength of Grace’s 20 points and five rebounds. Harrison had 12 points and six rebounds, while

Glavan had 10 rebounds.

Through the team’s first 26 games, Harrison was averaging 1.1 points per game and had made nine shots in the 20 games he played in.

“Lex had a huge weekend,” said Doran. “He made the most of his opportunity.”

Doran also was impressed with the efforts of Glavan, particularly in the rebounding department in the Oak Park-River Forest contest.

“Tim Glavan’s effort on the glass was tremendous,” he said. “To get 10 rebounds at Oak Park, I am pretty sure

we haven’t ever had anyone do that.

Not even Frank Toohey did that.”

Grace also excelled in the Oak Park contest. “Jeff really dominated the game on both ends,” Doran noted.

“He’s relentless defensively.”

York played at 1-league-win Proviso West earlier in the week and will host Hinsdale Central Friday night.

Hinsdale is the only team to take a game off York thus far in the conference.

A win at Proviso West would guarantee the Dukes no less than a share of the WSC Silver title.

Timothy Christian girls basketball team wins regional title Trojans playing in Chicago Orr sectional this week

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team ended a brief postseason hardware drought by defeating Chicago Christ the King 57-28 to win the Class 2A Chicago Christ the King regional title.

The win gave Timothy its first regional title since 2018. Before that, the Trojans previous regional crown came in 2011.

In the Christ the King win, Timothy Christian jumped out to a 28-2 lead after the first quarter.

“We pressured the heck out of them,” said Timothy coach Jill Groenewold. “They weren’t able to get set up as much and we took a lot away.

They tried to pass and we got our hands on things, attacked them and scored. It gives you a cushion pretty quickly.”

Groenewold also liked how her team played offensively.

“We were pretty patient on offense and we were able to pound it into the posts and we finished inside,” she said.

Groenewold was thrilled to see her group bring home postseason hardware. “It’s been a couple years,” she said. “Last year left a bad taste in their mouths. It was good to get the job done.”

Hannah Schuringa, Sureya Alex and Grace Roland starred for the Trojans against Christ the King. “Grace Roland had a good, steady game,” Groenewold said. “She had nine boards and was a presence inside and was physical on defense.”

Roland and Maddie Drye are both freshmen on the Timothy varsity this season. “They have matured slowly,” said Groenewold. “They have a year’s experience now and are turning into sophomores right about now.

They are figuring out what to do.

They both have had great freshmen years.”

Prep earlier this week in the Chicago Orr sectional semifinals. The winner of that game plays for the sectional title against either Chicago Latin School or Walther Christian tonight at Chicago Orr. “It’s all about preparation,” said Groenewold late last week. “We’re

kind of in a situation where you learn as much as you can and then you forget it and move onto the next thing.

With our kids we have to be methodical and keep things the same with practice habits and expectations. We have to finish a lot of little things.

That has to happen for us to keep

going.”

Earlier, Timothy defeated Chicago Noble/Rauner 60-17 in the regional semifinals.

York’s Santucci a self-made bowling success story Dukes standout part of powerful, state-bound Dukes team

York junior girls bowler Holly Santucci was nothing more than an occasional recreational bowler when she arrived at the school as a freshman.

“Freshman year a friend got me into it,” she said. “I had no previous bowling experience other than going out on a Friday night with friends and throwing a ball down the lane.”

And Santucci quickly took a liking to the sport.

“I bowl five to six days a week even out of season,” she said. “I bowl in five leagues outside of bowling in the York program. I take private lessons. I put a lot of time into this to better myself.”

Santucci said that hard work and dedication to the sport is what led her to win the West Suburban Conference individual championship this year, which helped the Dukes win the WSC team title and has propelled the Dukes into the postseason with plenty of momentum that will reach a crescendo this weekend at the girls bowling state finals meet at Cherry Bowl near Rockford. Dukes close regular season with a win

The York girls basketball team completed its regular season with a 51-49 victory over Proviso East in last week’s West Suburban Conference crossover game. The Feb. 12 contest at Addison Trail High School featured the first-place teams from the conference’s Silver and Gold divisions.

York won the Silver championship with its record of 10-2. Proviso East captured the Gold title with an 11-1 record. York and the Pirates were tied at 36-36 through three quarters of last week’s battle.

Proviso East missed a last-second shot that would have sent the game to overtime. The York boys swimming team took fourth at the recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet.

York ended with 209 points. Oak Park-River Forest won the conference title with 311.5 points. Hinsdale Central was second at 264, while Lyons Township was third with 246.5 points.

Ben Harrington finished seventh for York in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.68. Andrew Hausoul was eighth at 23.09.

Sophomore Connor Groya was third in the 100 with a time of 46.80, while Harrington was seventh at 49.87.

Groya also was second in the 200 at the varsity level with a time of 1:46.71. Josh Allen was seventh at 1:53.82.

Jacob Dunlap was fifth in the 500 with a time of 5:04.41.

Allen was eight in the backstroke with a time of 1:00.85, while Anthony Bauer was ninth at 1:01.20.

Colin McNamara took seventh in the breaststroke at 1:05.73, while Kessler Dayton was ninth at 1:08.94.

Hausoul was seventh in the butterfly with a time of 58.10. Bauer took eight at 1:01.23.

Jensen was equally up to task in the 200 IM with a second-place time of 1:57.41. Dunlap was eighth at 2:12.56.

Owen David was third in the 1-meter diving competition with 340.90 points. Cory Logan took ninth at 273 points.

York was third in the 200 free relay in 1:28.19 with Groya, Hausoul, Harrington and Jensen. York was fourth in the 400 relay at 3:19.04 with Groya, Dunlap, Harrington and Jensen.

The Dukes finished fifth in the medley relay in 1:48.21 with Bauer, Dayton, Hausoul and McNamara swimming that race.

York was fifth in the frosh-soph meet with 167 points.

Nick Kamenica was 10th in the 50 at 26.02. Matthew Czech was eighth in the 100 at 55.91. Matthew Skwiot was ninth in the 200 at 2:07.53.

Freshman Jeremy Harrington placed second in the 500 at the frosh-soph level at 5:03.01. John Schroeder was seventh in the backstroke at 1:03.48.

Kamenica was fifth in the breaststroke at 1:06.28.

Harrington was third in the butterfly at 57.54. Czech was sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.56.

Jack Sherman was second in the 1-meter diving competition with 293.79 points. Joseph Qualtier was fifth at 267.20.

York was fifth in the 200 frosh-soph relay at 1:45.64 with Czech, Skwiot, John Heflin and Charlie McKenna.

The Dukes also were fifth in the 400 frosh-soph relay with Jeremy Harrington, Czech, Skwiot and Collin Rice swimming 3:48.18. The Dukes were fifth in the medley relay with Schroeder, Kamenica, Jeremy Harrington and Rice going 1:48.71.

When asked the key to being a good bowler, Santucci didn’t hesitate. “Always put your best self forward on and

off the lanes and believe in yourself,” she said. “If you put yourself down and walk into practice and matches with the mindset that you can’t do it, that will not get you anywhere.”

Santucci was open with her thoughts on winning the WSC individual title.

“I am not going to lie,” she said. “I never try to sound cocky, it feels very good. I cannot lie. It is an overwhelming feeling. It’s all the hard work I have put in only three years and the improvements I have made for myself and pushing my teammates to do their best as well. It all feels pretty good.”

Santucci said she had no grand visions at the beginning of the season to win the title. “Walking into it, there are a lot of good girls in our conference,” she said. “What I did know is our team was going to be good this year. I knew I could probably be in the top 20, but I never thought I would be the conference champion. I just wanted to do my best and whatever happens, happens.”

Santucci had a near miss with a 300 game in the WSC Invitational tournament. “It was in the fifth game of the conference invite,” she said. “I had the first 10 strikes and was consistently hitting my mark and was releasing the ball very well. In the 11th, I thought I had a perfect strike shot and I left a 10-pin. It was a perfect ball. I ended up picking it up and had the second-highest score ever for a game at York.”

The atmosphere when word spread of the possible 300 still is vivid in Santucci’s mind. “I remember turning and everybody in the bowling alley is there,” she said. “When that happens, time stops and everything freezes. My mom was there, my team was there.

My mom started to cry. I think that’s when I realized what I just did.”

Santucci was frank with her thoughts concerning leaving the 10 pin.

“I was a little bit (ticked),” she said.

“It was a perfect ball. They always say bowling isn’t fair. This is one of those moments when you realize bowling is not fair.”

Santucci said one of the reasons herself and her teammates have thrived this season centers on the team’s chemistry.

“In girls high school bowling and even boys high school bowling, there is a lot of cheering and pushing your teammates to do their best,” she explained. “We constantly cheer and mo-

tivate each other. If someone leaves an open, you tell them they have this. We really get up and keep the energy up for all three games. It’s OK if a girl has an off game. It happens to the best, but we’re all friends and family and we have each other’s back. We will cheer for you and let you know you are something special. Having that really pushes you to keep doing your best.”

Santucci is equally pumped about the success the Dukes continue to have on the lanes. “Oh, my goodness,” she said. “We had a pretty good team last year and we are even better this year.

I’m only a junior and we have a freshman (JJ Bolden) who has been bowling since she was three. It’s the best team York has ever had. All of the hard work we have put in is showing. This is a very good team. I couldn’t ask for any more from these ladies. They put their best forward every practice and meet and tournament and it shows.”

Santucci, whose home house is Stardust in Addison, also has high praise for Turnbull and Hedman. “They are the best coaches I have ever had,” she said. “They see the best in you all the time. They know how to bring you up when you are down. They are always at the ready to give you advice. They are some of the most understanding people I have ever met. They are very special people.”

As far as taking the sport to the next level, Santucci said college bowling could be a possibility. She does have experience with what is referred to as the college shot (refers to oil conditions) as opposed to the house shot.

“If I don’t play in college I will still play in leagues until I can’t play anymore,” she said.

Now, York turns its focus to this weekend’s state meet near Rockford.

The Dukes have bowled as high as a 6,033 (school record) this season. Four teams bowled over 6,000 at last weekend’s sectional meets and three posted scores of 6,438, 6,201 and 6,182.

“When we had the 6,033 at the conference invite, I’ve never seen so much joy on the girls’ faces,” Santucci said last week. “If we put our best foot forward we can easily get into the top five. I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but a 190 team average probably gets you in the top seven in state.

Our goal is a trophy. We are looking to trophy this year. We are capable of it.

We believe in each lady on this team.”

“I don’t want to say I’m doing anything differently this year,” she said.

“I’m putting a lot of hard work in.”

Santucci said freshman year at York she started out averaging 129 a game.

“I started seeing private coaches and coach (Katie) Turnbull (York’s head

coach) and coach (Ron) Hedman (York assistant) helped me out a lot. I ended up at 150. At first, it was pretty rough.”

Santucci didn’t go into bowling as a complete neophyte though. “My mom bowled in high school and college and I always watched it on TV with her,” she said. “I did have some interest in

IC Catholic Prep’s Gunther makes immediate impact on lanes Freshman rolls 299 game at state meet

IC Catholic Prep freshman Jacob Gunther wasted no time making an impact at the boys high school bowling level.

Gunther finished tied for 32nd in the state this season, even bowling a 299 game during the tournament

held in downstate O’Fallon.

“It was really fun,” he said. “It was a little nerve-racking. I’m only a freshman. I was able to calm my nerves a little bit. Because I am a freshman, there will be more chances to go downstate. That calmed my nerves.”

Gunther rolled a 299 in the second game of first-day competition at St. Clair Bowl.

He had rolled a 278 in the opener and finished with an impressive 819 series for his first three games, which put him in second place overall.

“I started off really well in the

tournament,” he said. “The second day I didn’t do as well and dropped down. I’m proud of myself. To finish that way on the first day as a freshman was good.”

Gunther tried not to put too much thought into the possibility of a 300 game.

“I didn’t think about it too much,” he said. “If you get all in your head, that is what is going to mess you up. When I threw that last ball is when I thought I really could throw a perfect game right now.”

Gunther’s previous high game was a 278.

“Which I did the game before,”

Gunther said.

Gunther has been bowling since the age of two, he said. “I really started picking it up at around six. Competition-wise, I got into it around six or seven years old. I like how competitive bowling is. Kids are shooting high games consistently. You have to be able to keep up with it. It’s a very competitive sport.”

Gunther, who also will play baseball at IC Catholic Prep this spring, keeps his skills sharp through a variety of leagues out of Orland Bowl in Orland Park. “I bowled in an after-school league and now a Satur-

day doubles league. Orland Bowl is my home alley, but I usually don’t have a partner. I go with whatever they give me. I don’t care. I’m there to practice. I like to win, but you have to practice. Practice is practice.”

For Gunther, being a ninth-grader is only fueling his competitive fire further.

“It’s definitely motivating,” he said. “Kids like me bowl their whole life and never get a chance to make it to state. Being a freshman is great motivation to make it there again and do as well as I did. I can’t wait for the next three years.”

There will be an IC Catholic Prep invasion at this weekend’s Class 1A state wrestling finals in Champaign.

The Knights qualified six wrestlers for state out of the recent Class 1A Chicago Bowen sectional. Those six will compete in the 1A finals at State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois.

Sophomore Michael DiBenedetto won the 113-pound sectional title.

He won the championship match by a 9-0 major decision count and improved to 40-6 on the season.

Junior Saul Trejo also won the sectional title at 106 pounds. Trejo was a 9-5 winner in the final. He’s now 36-6 this season.

Fed reports benefits of U.S. ‘tortoise’ economy While America’s economy—or Gross Domestic Product (GDP)— grew at a rate of only 2.3% in 2019 versus the 3% standard, 2.1 million new jobs were created in the past 12 months, the nation’s unemployment rate of 3.5% fell historically low and energy prices (oil and natural gas) remained well below their historical norms.

That was among the financial data shared with some 300 businesspeople and 40 exhibitors representing Elmhurst and 16 other west suburban chambers of commerce at the 18th Annual Economic Outlook Luncheon held on Friday, Feb. 7.

William A. Strauss, senior economist and economic advisor in the Economic Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, delivered the event’s keynote address for the 13th and final time, in advance of his pending retirement this spring.

Strauss assured attendees that there are no indicators of a downturn in America’s $20 trillion economy, or of any pending “negative economic shock” that typically provides the financial impetus for a recession.

The U.S. Stock Market continues to produce record highs, despite regular volatility.

Quoting 1961 Nobel-winning Keynesian economist Paul Samuelson, Strauss quipped that, “the stock market has predicted nine of the past five recessions.”

Since the end of the “Great Recession”—which ran from December of 2007 through June of 2009—America’s economy has generated average GDP growth of 2.3% over the past 11 years since (a growth span “unprecedented” since the end of World War II) and remains more stable than any

other country. Comparatively, the GDP growth rate hit 4.4% and 4.3% following the recessions of 1981-82 and 1974-75, respectively.

Only China (6.1%) and India (5.4%) reported higher GDPs in 2019 than the United States.

The Fed forecasts GDP growth at 1.8% to 2.0% for 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Two major factors that drive GDP—labor force growth and productivity gain—remained relatively static. The labor force had no growth due to a slow population growth and

low immigration, while productivity (as a result of better equipment, improved processes, greater capital investment or a more-skilled workforce) increased only 1%.

U.S. manufacturing and labor took a dip in 2019, with the Midwest economy feeling the pinch despite major Illinois contributors such as John Deere and Caterpillar.

The extended tariff conflict with China and the renegotiation of the foreign trade agreement with Mexico and Canada (USMCA)—Illinois’ two largest trade partners—forced

some manufacturers to scale back on their operations.

With the tariffs implemented in 2018, the U.S. ranks eighth in the world behind Korea, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Russia and China, and just ahead of Turkey and Indonesia. If all of the proposed 2019 tariffs were put in effect, the U.S. would rank No. 1 worldwide.

While Americans are driving vehicles that average 11 years old, auto manufacturers lowered production to 16 million vehicles, with General Motors (GM) weathering a five-week

walkout by the 48,000 United Auto Workers (UAW) union members at 50 plants ending in late October.

The auto industry sold 17 million vehicles in 2019, with light truck sales up 2.4% and now accounting for three-fourths of the market. Sedan sales dropped by 10.7%. Alternative-power vehicles (hybrid, electric, etc.) remained less than 5% of total sales.
