District 205 Board member says City withholding TIF funds McDonough criticizes City’s ‘unconstructive storm water approach’

John McDonough, a School Board member for Elmhurst School District 205, said he urges the City to back away from any “unconstructive approach to storm water discussion and reaffirm the clear intent of mutual good will that’s in the 2004 Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA)” by releasing the full amount of TIF surplus funds as scheduled and as promised.

“It’s the kind of politics that people are just tired of,” he said at a recent School Board meeting. “People expect their governments to get along, to work together, to share and coordinate their resources, and then live up to their promises.”

McDonough stated that the City is withholding the full surplus under the 2004 Tax Increment Financing (TIF) agreement between the School Board and the City.

No other School Board members made any comments.

“From a City taxpayer and resident’s perspective, it seems to be a far too narrow view of economic development, one that favors downtown development over well-maintained and healthy schools which have always been the foundation of this community’s economic vibrancy and solid home values,” McDonough said. “My personal belief is that if the City is withholding or even questioning its obligation to

this community to release the full surplus under the 2004 TIF agreement, it is a real cause for concern for constituents and taxpayers of total bodies.

“From our schools, families and taxpayers perspective, it seems to be inappropriate pressure to divert School District property away from its intended educational purposes – away from benefiting our students.”

This year communications and shared projections stopped, McDonough stated.

“And it was coincident with the disagreements on the terms and conditions for the City’s use of District 205 properties for its storm water projects,” he said. “I think that some of the Board members continue to be troubled by the City’s apparent tactic of withholding promised and contractually required TIF releases in support of the property demands for storm water projects.

“We remain open and available to discuss any City proposal that comes along and our Oct. 27 statement clearly stated that. This has been our consistent position since our September 2014 storm water resolution.

“However, regardless of whatever the City decides to submit an alternative proposal for Bryan or any other site, we will continue to serve in our fiduciary role as trustees of the community’s assets for the benefit of our students.”

While it is now official, Richard Blass’ loss to incumbent Liz Chaplin for the DuPage County Board seat in District 2 raises a question.

In his concession statement Blass seems to question the fact that there were as many as 13,000 ballots that came in after Election Day that turned the tides in Chaplin’s favor.

He said they were all delivered at once by “an unknown person,” which he appears to find unusual, but Blass said he is willing to accept the results as posted by the DuPage County Election Commission, which showed him losing by just 50 votes.

On Election night, media outlets had proclaimed Blass the winner and Chaplin even called him the

following day to concede. But the additional votes coming from absentee ballots and provisional ballots caused the vote to swing the other way.

The addition of new votes have led the results to turn around: in the end Chaplin defeated Blass by a mere 50 votes.

“An unusual turn of events since Election Day, led by the sudden influx of 13,000 absentee ballot requests and provisional ballots, have overturned the results,” Blass said in a statement. “The Board of Elections has informed me my campaign has fallen short by only 50 votes, a fraction of 1 percent of more than 73,000 votes cast.”

Blass said there was an odd instance in which thousands of ballot requests were delivered at once to the Board of Elections by an unknown person, but that he has decided to accept the election results regardless, “and believe that our country’s election system is based on citizens trusting their votes are counted in a fair and honest process.”

District 205 Foundation funds future-ready classrooms in three schools

According to the most recent District 205 newsletter, the District 205 Foundation for Educational Excellence unanimously approved to provide $50,000 to help fund the Future Ready Model Classroom project, a pilot program that will create three future ready classrooms at the K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 grade levels.

“Our mission states that we are dedicated to innovations in education,” said Foundation Chair Brian Bresnahan. “Helping to move the District further along the spectrum of Future Ready Learning is definitely something we want to be involved with. I think the community will see the value in it and support us.”

According to Wight, in order to be chosen for the program, schools must be “agile” and accommodate small group collaboration, learning commons, hubs for social learning, tech-infused spaces, STEM and maker spaces.

In addition, schools must be able to address safety and security, health and comfort, fitness/wellness and outdoor learning.

“The fact that we received multiple Thiems Grant applications requesting new types of seating options, desks and other furnishings, is evidence that teachers want their classrooms to evolve in order to meet current needs,” said Geri

According to District 205 officials, these model classrooms will allow people to go beyond imagining what future ready learning environments could be and will actually make the vision come to life in these spaces.

Both the Board of Education and Superintendent Moyer have expressed gratitude to the Foundation Board for their support in this project.

“These classrooms will assist with future planning to ensure that, one day, all District 205 students will be afforded the opportunity to learn in an environment that promotes engagement, rigor, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and citizenship in the global information age,” said Superintendent Dr. David Moyer.

Viewpoint Conroy fights against lame duck tax increase

Two measures supported by State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) to block efforts to raise taxes during outgoing legislators’ final days in office were approved by the House this week.

“Middle-class families already face a rising cost of living and skyrocketing property taxes, and a last minute income tax increase pushed through in the final days of lawmakers’ terms would only add another undue burden to residents,” Conroy said. “Politicians in Springfield, especially those in their final days in office, do not have the standing to ask residents for more revenue.”

House Joint Constitutional Amendment 62 would increase the number of votes needed to increase taxes during a lame duck session af-

ter a November election and before the new legislature is sworn in. Rather than the 60 votes that were needed to pass the 2011 income tax increase during a lame duck session, HJRCA 62 would require a three-fifths majority vote, or 71 votes. Additionally, Conroy supported House Resolution 1494 to reaffirm her fight against any tax increase in the waning days of the current General Assembly.

“We saw in 2011 that last minute political maneuvers led to a tax increase that directly hit working families,” Conroy said. “I am committed to continue working towards a longterm solution that balances the budget and protects needed services but jamming through a tax increase on residents who are already struggling is not the solution.”

Here’s what’s happening at the Elmhurst Park District

The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on Nov. 28 at the district’s administrative building at 375 W. First Street. All seven commissioners attended the meeting.

There were no public comments.

• Board discusses acquisitions at Armitage, Palmer Dr. The board’s previous meeting on Nov. 14 included a presentation from district staff about the upcoming budget for 2017. The Nov. 28 meeting included continued discussion about the budget for the district’s next fiscal year, which begins on Jan. 1, 2017.

rector Jim Rogers noted during the Nov. 28 meeting that the budget had been revised since the Nov. 14 presentation to reflect the district’s two recent property acquisitions. He said the closing for the purchase of the home at 447 Armitage Avenue would take place the week of Dec. 5. The closing for the property at 135 Robert T. Palmer Drive would not take place until after Jan. 1, 2017.

At its Oct. 11 meeting, the board announced it would purchase the home at 447 Armitage Avenue for $292,500. The home is located on the southwest side of Berens Park. The district reportedly plans to demolish the home. At its Sept. 12 meeting, the board voted to approve the purchase of the property at 135 Robert T. Palm-

er Drive for $1.8 million. The board has not announced its future intentions for that property, which is located just south of Glos Memorial Park.

Rogers said at the Nov. 28 meeting that since the closing on the Armitage property will take place this year, the purchase will not be inserted into the 2017 budget. According to Rogers, the recent revisions to the budget include an expenditure of about $1.9 million to cover the purchase of the Palmer Drive property and development of that site ($1,857,500) as well as preliminary development costs ($50,000) at the Armitage site. Rogers, who said the revision reflected the staff’s desire to be transparent with the board and the public, said the figure of about $1.9 million is a projection by staff.

He said the board will have a stronger idea in the future of how the properties will be utilized.

The board is expected to vote to approve the district’s proposed 2017 budget at its next meeting on Dec. 12—the board’s last scheduled meeting of the year.

• Meeting schedule for 2017 announced The board voted unanimously during the meeting to set scheduled meeting dates for 2017. Pursuant to the Illinois Public Open Meetings Act, each public body is required to give public notice at the beginning of the year of the dates, times and locations of its regular meetings.

The board voted to continue holding its meetings at 7 p.m. on the second

and fourth Monday of each month, with some exceptions. When those Mondays fall on a holiday, the board meeting will take place on the following Tuesday. In January of 2017, the board will hold one of its meetings on the fifth Monday of the month—Jan. 30. The first meeting of 2017 will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 17, one day after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The remaining meetings of 2017 are scheduled for: Feb. 13, Feb. 27, March 13, March 27, April 10, April 24, May 8, May 22, June 12, June 26, July 10, July 24, Aug. 14, Aug. 28, Sept. 11, Sept. 25, Oct. 10 (one day after Columbus Day), Oct. 23, Nov. 13, Nov. 27 and Dec. 11. The board typically holds only one meeting each December.

SUSAN PENROD VILLAPIANO, 55 Susan Penrod Villapiano, 55, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. By her side were her best friend and husband Phil, the love of her life, her son Michael, her sister Mary, her brother Bob and her stepchildren Philip and Andrea.

Born in Champaign-Urbana, Susan attended York Community High School in Elmhurst, where she graduated in 1979. After high school, she went on to the University of Illinois where she earned her BS in marketing, followed by earning her MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago. Soon after college, Susan moved to New York, where she was a former corporate finance professional and CFO of a Fortune 500 company. After meeting and marrying Phil, she moved to New Jersey. She resided in Ocean Township before moving to Rumson.

Susan was very active in every aspect of Michael’s life as well as the community in which she lived. She

was a community volunteer at Holy Cross Church. She served on The Advisory Board for the NJ Commission on Cancer Research, the Board for the Mercy Center of Asbury Park with its Sisters Academy of NJ, the Foundation to Save the Jersey Shore after Hurricane Sandy and the Rumson Education Foundation. In addition, Susan created the Rumson PTO Curriculum Enhancement Liaison Program for Rumson Elementary schools. Susan was honored last spring at the Beauty Ball 2016 sponsored by the Beauty Foundation for Cancer Care. That evening, she received the Peter Criss Courage Award.

In addition to all this, she chased two beagles Yankee and Nestle around the streets of Rumson for a decade.

Susan was predeceased by her grandparents, Robert A. and Lillian Reidel and Margaret A. Winn and Charles E. Penrod; her in-laws, Dorothy and Augustus Villapiano. Susan is survived by her husband Phil, son Michael, stepdaughter Andrea (Jim), stepson Philip (Laura). Other survivors include her parents Bob and Judy

Penrod of Verona, Wisc.; a sister Mary Penrod (Rob Ruggerio) of Paoli, Penn.; brother Bob Penrod (Kristen) of Plano, Texas; brothers-in-law Gus Villapiano (Lauren) of Oakhurst and John Villapiano (Sharon) of Long Branch; a sisterin-law Carolee Villapiano of Oakhurst; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and grandchildren.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Nov. 25 Officers responded to the report of a verbal domestic between a husband and wife in the 100 block of N. Willow at around 11:51 p.m.

The victim reports the suspect came home allegedly intoxicated, and she locked him out of the bedroom. The suspect then gained entry to the bedroom and tried to push past the victim with his forearm, according to police. The victim then reportedly bit him in the hand. No complaints were signed.

Battery Nov. 30 • Kevin Bradley, 45, of Hillside, was arrested at a hospital in the 100 block of E. Brush Hill at around 8:38 a.m. Police said officers responded to the hospital where Bradley had reportedly refused to comply with hospital security. Officers attempted to get Bradley to calm down as he was pacing in the room with a closed fist, according to police. Bradley then allegedly began to walk towards a police officer and refused to comply with the officer’s demands. He was charged with three counts of aggravated assault.

• A victim in the 100 block of Victory Parkway told police at around 6:14 p.m. that she and her friend were selling water bottles outside of the school for a school event. The victim stated that the suspect approached her and pushed her up against a wall. According to the victim, after she was pushed, the suspect said something to her friend and then left the school.

Nov. 26 Battery was reported in the 200 block of W. Butterfield at around 1:05 p.m. A victim told police that after an unnamed suspect was being evicted from a church, the suspect attacked the victim, scratching his face and striking him on the head with a cane. The victim declined to sign complaints. The suspect was issued a no trespass order.

Criminal damage or defacement to property/ vehicle/criminal trespass to property/vehicle/ damage to property Nov. 30 Scott Blair, 18, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 400 block of S. Sunnyside at around 8:14 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a suspicious person call, a complainant related he saw two individuals near a vacant house that was under construction. According to police, officers observed a vehicle parked in the area and located the owner and his son. Police said Blair, the owner’s son, admitted to going into the backyard and into the vacant house. He was found to be in possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia and alcohol by a minor, according to police, and was charged with possession of alcohol by minor, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal trespass to property.

Nov. 28 A victim in the 400 block of Utley Road reported at 9:29 a.m. that a parkway tree branch fell and damaged the windshield of her vehicle.

Nov. 23-Nov. 26 A complainant at a church in the 300 block of N. Kenilworth told police that she discovered a broken window on the northwest side of the building and did not locate any objects on the building’s interior that could have been thrown through it, causing the damage.

Nov. 25 A victim told police at around 4:36 p.m. that an unknown suspect severed a 6-foot strand of Christmas lights that are on display in his front yard. The victim experienced a similar incident last year.

CALL 800-222-TIPS Nov. 24-Nov. 25 A complainant in the 200 block of E. First St. told police at around 11:57 a.m. that his family owns an apartment building in the above location and he is responsible for the building’s maintenance. Upon inspection, he observed the picture window on the second floor had been broken and a large rock in the living room area of the newly rented unit, where the new tenants had not finished moving in. The previous tenants left on good terms and the complainant will forward the new tenant information.

Nov. 7 Nathan Mendoza, 18, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 10:20 a.m. A victim told police that his vehicle’s back window was broken out and his backpack was stolen. The victim located his backpack in the suspect’s dorm room, according to police. Police said Mendoza admitted to removing the backpack. He was charged with criminal damage to property.

Disorderly conduct

Nov. 23 William Webster, 27, of Villa Park, was issued a citation by police near Church and Kenilworth at around 11:22 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a call for an unconscious person lying on the ground at the above location, Webster was found to be highly intoxicated.

He was cited for disorderly conduct.

Domestic incident, domestic battery Nov. 29 • A 35-year-old Elmhurst woman was arrested in the 100 block of Linden at around 8:19 a.m. A victim told police that the suspect had knocked items off of the kitchen counter.

The victim then attempted to call 911, but the suspect reportedly swung her arm attempting to grab the phone out of the victim’s hand.

The suspect then allegedly unplugged the base of the phone, hoping it would disconnect the call, but was unsuccessful. The suspect was charged with unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence.

• A victim told police she and her daughter got into a verbal argument which turned physical between the two. The victim’s son pulled Suspect 2 off of her and Suspect 2 walked outside, pushing away the victim. Suspect 2 then confronted Suspect 1 and Suspect 2 was punched. A juvenile disposition is pending.

Nov. 26 Officers responded to the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 2:14 a.m. after the suspect was observed reportedly throwing items off her balcony and asked for help. The suspect and victim had a verbal argument causing the suspect to throw the victim’s items, according to police. Officers responded a second time after another verbal argument and the suspect stated they had been pushing each other. The suspect told police he wanted to leave, and a

DUI, illegal consumption or possession of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation or possession of open alcohol, possession or delivery of a controlled substance Nov. 23 • Margaret Grasse, 20, of Elmhurst, was issued an adjunction ticket by police at a food store in the 600 block of N. York at around 8:35 p.m. Police said that while an officer was inside the store on an unrelated matter, the officer observed a young female carrying a 24pack of beer and walking from the checkout lanes to the exit doors. According to police, Grasse was found to be under 21 and in possession of a fraudulent ID. She was issued an adjudication ticket for possession of alcohol by a minor and for possession of fraudulent ID card.

• John Marte, 49, of Glen Ellyn, was arrested near Route 83 and Lake Street at around 2:03 p.m. and charged with DUI following a traffic stop.

Harassment, threatening phone call Nov. 1-Nov. 27 A victim in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police that on Nov. 1 she received a call from a customer complaining that he received a burnt pizza. The victim offered a replacement to the suspect, described as a white male around 40 years old, 5’9” and 170 pounds. Since that date the suspect has been continually calling the store asking for the victim’s work schedule.

The suspect also cursed at the victim during one of the phone calls. The victim was advised to contact this police department if the suspect returns; she wishes to pursue the matter.

Liquor law violation Nov. 23 • Camille Connell, 53, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation by police at a restaurant in the 400 block of S. Spring Road at around 6:21 p.m. Police said that during a liquor compliance check at the restaurant, Connell served an underage investigative aide alcohol without requesting identification. According to police, Connell admitted she served the aide alcohol and also presented her BASSETT training certificate. She was issued a citation for sale of liquor to a minor.

• Jaimin Patel, 24, of Hoffman Estates, was issued a citation by police at a food pantry in Bensenville at around 8:01 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a complaint of Elmhurst minors purchasing alcohol at the pantry, a liquor compliance check was conducted. According to police, Patel sold liquor to a minor and was cited for sale of alcohol to a minor.

• Joan Vacchiano, 68, of Elmhurst, was is-

sued an adjunction ticket by police at a food store in the 600 block of N. York at around 5:52 p.m. Police said that while conducting alcohol /tobacco compliance checks, Vacchiano sold alcohol to a minor. According to police, she admitted that she did not check an ID to verify the age of a minor prior to selling the alcohol. She was issued an adjudication ticket for providing alcohol to minor.

• Graciela Vega, 18, of Villa Park, was issued a citation by police at a restaurant in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 7:11 p.m. Police said an employee of the restaurant served alcohol to a minor investigative aide while the police department was conducting compliance checks. According to police, Vega asked for identification which showed the aide to be 19 years old and then asked her manager to get the alcohol. She admitted she served the minor and also mentioned she had been certified in BASSETT. She was issued a citation for the sale of alcohol to a minor.

Nov. 27 • Enrique Garcia, 18, of Stone Park, was issued citations by police near North and Indiana at around 12:14 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Garcia was found to be in possession of cannabis. He was cited at the scene with possession of cannabis, illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage, speeding and no insurance. Police said three other juvenile suspects were found to be in violation of curfew and taken to the police department. Juvenile 1 was charged with curfew, possession of cannabis and consumption of alcohol and released to his mother. Juvenile 2 was charged with curfew and released to his mother. Juvenile 3 was charged with curfew and consumption of alcohol by a minor and released to his mother.

• Mandreion Woods, 22, of Westchester, was issued citations by police near Route 83 and Van Buren at around 2:13 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Woods was found to be in possession of cannabis. Woods was issued local ordinance citations for unlawful possession of cannabis and failure to signal when required.

Nov. 26 Adam Lawler, 22, of Hobart, Ind., was issued citations by police for possession of cannabis and no insurance near Grand and County Line at around 9:01 p.m. following a traffic stop.

Nov. 25 Veronica Macias, 25, of Bensenville, was issued citations by police near York and Fullerton at around 11:40 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop for cell phone use while driving, an officer smelled the odor of burnt cannabis emitting from the inside of the suspect’s vehicle. According to police, Macias was found to be in possession of cannabis. She was given citations for possession of cannabis and for operating a vehicle while using an electronic communication device.

Nov. 24 Mark Roland, 41, of Chicago, was issued a citation by police near Butterfield and Kirk at around 2:25 p.m. for possession of cannabis.

Suspicious circumstances

Nov. 26 A victim in the 100 block of S. Sunnyside Ave. told police at around 4:40 that she has received a total of two letters stating she is being reported to the IRS and the County Assessor’s Office accusing her of not being honest about her income.

Nov. 29 Tkeyh Herbert, 22, of Chicago; Katlin George, 19, of Chicago; and three unnamed suspects were arrested at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 7:56 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to a retail theft in progress at the store, the suspects removed several items and left the store without paying.

The three unnamed suspects were released without charges. Herbert was charged with attempted retail theft, obstructing identification, driving while license suspended and no insurance. George was charged with felony retail theft and resisting a police officer. Police said George also was found to have an in-state warrant out of Cook County.

Nov. 28-Nov. 29 • A victim in the 300 block of N. Oak told police that during the above dates, an unknown suspect(s) entered their unlocked vehicle, moved property and took change from the cup-holder. Also taken from the unsecured detached garage was a men’s 26-inch mountain bike.

• A victim in the 300 block of Yorkfield told police that a package had been taken from her front door.

The package was delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.

Nov. 28 • Residential burglary was reported in the 100 block of Avon at around 11:50 a.m. A victim told police he was certain he locked his apartment door when he left for work in the morning. Upon returning, he noticed the door slightly ajar. Police responded and checked the apartment with no results. Items were moved, but nothing was missing. A suspect was described as an unknown male wearing a dark blue sweatshirt or work jacket.

• Attempted theft was reported in the 200 block of E. Van Buren St. at around 1:35 p.m. A complainant told police that a suspect described as a black male attempted to steal two packages from the front of her home. She observed this male park a black truck in front of her home, then realized she had packages delivered to her home earlier. She opened the door and observed this male walking away with her packages and yelled to him. He turned around, tossed the packages in her front yard, then left westbound on Van Buren to southbound Colfax in his black truck with partial possible plate of 838.

• Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of W. Winthrop at

around 2:52 p.m. A bank notified a complainant that someone had successfully gained access to her credit card account. There was no monetary loss.

• Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 700 block of N. Willow Road at around 5:22 p.m. A victim told police that sometime between midnight and 4 a.m., an unknown person(s) entered his unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway. The center console was opened and its contents thrown around, his shoes and other items were missing.

• Theft was reported in the 300 block of E. Yorkfield at around 10 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed five boxes of merchandise from his front porch that were delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.

Nov. 27-Nov. 28 • Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 700 block of Chatham. Police said that at around 6 a.m. Nov. 28, a victim discovered that an unknown suspect(s) entered their unlocked vehicles, and threw their items all over the inside of their vehicles. One of the vehicles had one expired debit card and one expired credit card missing. The other vehicle had a brown box containing coffee products taken.

• Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 700 block of Chatham.

A victim told police that at around 11 p.m. Nov. 27, he parked his unlocked vehicle in his driveway. At 7 a.m. Nov. 28, he noticed his armrest open and items scattered over the front seat. The victim noticed one can of energy drink and an unspecified amount of cash was stolen from his vehicle.

• A victim in the 700 block of N. Willow told police at around 9:31 p.m. that an unknown suspect(s) entered her vehicle and opened her glove box and center console.

Nothing appeared to be disturbed or missing.

Nov. 26 An officer responded to a shoplifting report at a food store in the 900 block of S. York at around 8:40 a.m. Police said a video surveillance showed a suspect described as a white male wearing a brown leather jacket, black pants, black shoes and a gray hat enter and remove three cases of liquor.

Nov. 25 • A victim in the 100 block of Monterey told police at around 3 p.m. that an unknown suspect removed an air compressor from her driveway sometime within the past few weeks. The victim later went to a pawn shop in Villa Park to purchase a replacement unit. While at the pawn shop, the victim noticed that her stolen air compressor was there.

• A loss prevention officer from a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 told police at around 2:28 p.m. that two suspects entered the store and each filled two shopping bags with merchandise. Both suspects were then observed running out of the south doors, entering a silver vehicle and fleeing onto St. Charles Road. The witness reports that both suspects are suspects of previous

retail thefts at various stores. One of the suspects is described as a black female in her 30s, wearing a purple coat with a hood and blue jeans.

The second suspect is described as a black female in her 30s with long black hair, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and white pants.

Nov. 24-Nov. 25 Robert E. Prideaux, 41, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 100 block of W. Butterfield at around 4:22 a.m. Police said a victim reported that Prideaux took her debit card and vehicle without permission.

According to police, the suspect made three withdrawals from the debit card. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen. Police said Prideaux was later located and was in possession of drug paraphernalia and suspect cocaine. He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, criminal trespass to a vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia and aggravated driving while license suspended.

Nov. 18-Nov. 25 An officer reported at around 3:03 p.m. that the stop sign and post at westbound Vallette at Rex had been removed by an unknown suspect between the above dates.

Nov. 24 A victim in the 500 block of S. Linden Ave. told police at around 9:38 a.m. that she put her wallet containing credit cards and her driver’s license down while at an airport in the Dominican Republic and was unable to locate it before boarding her flight home. Upon arriving home, she began receiving notices of suspicious transactions on her credit cards in the Dominican Republic. The victim reported the stolen credit cards, and her driver’s license was entered into LEADS. Nov. 23 • Burglary to a vehicle was reported at a recreational facility in the 600 block of N. York at around 8:12 a.m. The victim is an employee of the facility, and told police she parked her vehicle in the parking lot at approximately 5 a.m. The victim was advised by another employee that her driver’s door window had been shattered. A pink bag and a black bag were taken.

• Burglary to a vehicle was reported at a food store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at 1 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect(s) shattered the passenger side front window of the victim’s vehicle and stole her purse that was sitting on the floor.

Oct. 12 A victim in the 400 block of S. Kenilworth told police at around 11:31 a.m. that an unknown suspect attempted to open a credit card under her name. The attempt was unsuccessful.

Aug. 19-Aug. 22 A victim came to the police station to report a box of five watches missing from his home. The victim told police his basement flooded back in August and he had some workers restoring the damage. He believes the watches went missing at that time.

Conroy invites residents to Holiday Open House Seeks donations for ‘Cell Phones for Soldiers’

Sen. Nybo receives ‘Voice of Senior Care’ award State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elmhurst) has received the Voice of Senior Care Award from the Illinois Health Care Association for his support of senior citizens and issues that affect them.

Nybo accepted the award Nov. 22 while visiting with the residents at Burgess Square Healthcare State Sen. and Rehab Centre in Chris Nybo Westmont.

“As lawmakers, it is our duty to insist our laws ensure quality care for seniors. I am pleased we were able to pass various legislation for the benefit of seniors, and I will continue to advocate for our older residents through appropriate and responsible legislation in our state,” Nybo said.

“It is fitting to receive this honor at Burgess Square, a place devoted to senior care. John Vrba and his staff provide lots of personal attention

for patients to help them regain their health in a home-like setting.”

Nybo was recognized for his efforts to ensure quality care for seniors especially through his efforts to gain passage of important legislation relating to dispute resolutions involving nursing homes.

“Due to his hard work on the bill and past support of the long-term care profession, Illinois Health Care Association’s Public Policy committee has honored Sen. Nybo with our 2016 ‘Voice of Senior Care,’ award,” said Matt Hartman, Vice President of Public Policy.

Each year at about this time I find myself face to face with an issue. It has to do with one aspect of the holidays. In two words – the tree. I can’t get behind the idea of the tree and my lack of spirit makes me feel downright Grinchy.

I don’t want to have a tiny, shrunken heart. I want to participate in the magic and miracles of the season. I want to drink eggnog. I want to be enthused about a tree in my living room.

I really do. But I’m not.

Something must be wrong with me. I can see the magic of the season in other aspects. I love shopping for gifts. I love the Christmas story and holiday music. I love family get-togethers and the abundance of festive food and goodies that make the season bright. But I’m not feeling the need to hug a tree (metaphorically speaking).

Everyone around me is giddy with tree glee. They can’t wait for the big tree buying day to get here. They have traditions about when and where to get the best tree. About decorating it while singing carols and eating homemade cookies. About who puts the star on top and who gets to be the first to plug in the lights. They all delight in the celebration of the tree.

Their eyes sparkle as they absorb the beauty, radiance and brilliance.

And then there’s me. I see pine needles dropping to the floor and cats that think the tree is their personal climbing station. I see work. It’s hard to enjoy decorating a tree when I know it all has to be undone in just a few weeks. I anticipate dragging the tree out to the backyard, getting sap and pine pricks on my hands. I do not look forward to vacuuming up prickly pine needles from January until March because I never can quite seem to get them all – or perhaps they multiply. I can’t see the forest of joy, for the tree.

I know; I have serious deficits.

I’ve suggested an artificial tree, but the people who live with me will have nothing of it. They demand a tree that smells like a tree.

This year, I thought I’d take a preemptive and creative approach to the issue. I decided we’d have a tree that isn’t quite a tree – exactly.

I got the idea from Pinterest. Instead of a tree, we’re going to have a topiary. I’m making it myself.

My project started with an upside-down tomato cage. The base tines are held together with a rubber band. It’s a highly technical craft plan. From there, I just wind leaves and garlands around the base to create a green backdrop. Then, items like pinecones, berries and ribbon complete the festive look. I figured I

could even spray it with a bottled pine scent.

I started my project last weekend, but ran into a snafu of not having enough garlands, so the topiary currently sits half wrapped in the dining room.

My kids discovered it yesterday and inquired as to its purpose.

“It’s going to be our Christmas tree,” I said.

They were collectively silent – a feat not often accomplished.

Then the youngest spoke up.

“That’s supposed to be a tree?” he asked, putting a large inflection on his last word. He got up off the couch to get a closer look. A couple others followed him – another feat not often accomplished. They hadn’t been this interested in my activities since the time I made homemade chocolate chip cookies two years ago.

They surrounded the tomato cage, scrutinizing its every leaf.

“It’s not done yet,” I said. “It’s going to look great.”

“But it’s not a tree,” the youngest said.

“Of course it’s not,” I said. “It’s a topiary!”

“Who’s ever heard of a Christmas topiary?” he asked.

“You have now,” I said. “We’re starting a new tradition.”

They weren’t convinced. They seldom are when I have one of my creative inspirations. Still, I refuse to let them damper my topiary spirit. And,

by December 25, bet I’ll have them singing new words to the traditional carol, “Oh topiary, oh topiary, how lovely are thy branches.”

Metra depot remodel estimated at $15+ million Plan includes new station, better drop spots, maybe tunnel

The latest estimate for the train station area remodel is from $15- to $18-million, according to a consultant.

The station house portion of the entire project is estimated to be $4 million, Ben Harber, senior project manager for CDM Smith, said at a public hearing at City Hall on Monday, Nov. 30. He indicated that the station looks well maintained but the interior is out-of-date; also the existing tunnel is a dark space.

A prior estimate by the City for the entire project was between $8- and $12-million before various options were suggested for a preferred alternative, which will be reviewed

by City Council at a later date. Aldermen had a previous look at the remodeling possibilities before a preferred alternative was selected.

Mayor Steve Morley urged about 20 residents at the meeting to be patient because the development pro-

cess takes time.

“There are lots of layers, lots of regulations and there are buckets of money from various agencies,” he said.

The mayor noted that the current station, last remodeled in the 1990s, “does not represent the best of Elmhurst.”

An online survey of Elmhurst residents about the train station drew more than 700 responses, compared to the 400+ people who filled out the survey sent over the summer.

The first application for various funding sources will be to the Congestive Mitigation and Air Quality Program (CEMAQ) in January of 2017, according to Cori Tiberi, assistant director of public works.

“The repairs will take significant dollars for the campus around the train station,” she said.

The start of construction is two to three years out, she added. The City is hoping to get a decision from CEMAQ by the summer of 2017.

City officials have been meeting multiple times with representatives from Metra, the Union Pacific Railroad and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Harber said.

Project needs include the safety of pedestrians and vehicles, according to Harber. He said there were police reports indicating that cars were

backing into other cars in the area.

“People are shooting across parking lots to get to trains.”

With that in mind, better drop-off and pick-up spots are included in the design.

Accessibility features will be added to meet requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Harber’s other suggestions include eliminating angled parking spots on First St.; adding a bigger, brighter

tunnel closer to York Rd.; and, adding warming shelters on both sides of the tracks.

City offers several ways to give back this holiday season Firefighters hold toy drive for kids at EMH

Elmhurst Firefighters from International Association 3541 have organized a toy drive to benefit children at Elmhurst Hospital this holiday season. New, unwrapped toys for children of all ages will be collected at Fire Station #1, 404 N. York Street and Fire Station #2, 601 S. York Street. Toys will be accepted now through December 21st.

Santa has turned in his sleigh for a fire truck this year and will be delivering the collected toys to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital employees will deliver the appropriate toy to each child.

Mitten tree at City Hall provides for County residents in need The City of Elmhurst will be collecting mittens, socks, and gloves for DuPage County residents in need.

Donations will be collected on a Christmas tree located in City Hall, Now through Dec, 22. The City is asking the community to help kids, teens and adults of all ages stay warm this winter by donating gloves, mittens and socks. Donations can be fastened to the Christmas tree located in the center foyer of City Hall.

The results are in, the winners are posted and the money is still coming in.

Dan Gibbons is delighted with the results of his 33rd annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, which took place on Thanksgiving morning in downtown Elmhurst. This year drew a total of 7,868 runners and walkers along Park Ave. at the start of the event.

“Captains Cari and Chris Piha, U.S. Air Force, stood as our Honor Guard, representing all service men and women defending our great nation at home or on foreign soil,” Gibbons said. “Kevin Calkins, U.S. Army and Vietnam veteran, stood as our Honorary Starter, representing our deserving veterans and honoring those Elmhurst residents – 14 in all – who paid the ultimate price during the Vietnam War. “The Men of Spirito inspired us with their ‘Anthem Medley,’ Lima Lima flew, the gun sounded and everyone was put in motion to Louis Armstrong’s ‘Wonderful World.’”

Gibbons especially acknowledged the 200-plus volunteers who come out at 5 a.m. to make the event an overwhelming success.

“Hopefully, someday we can say that no child goes to bed or to school on an empty stomach,” he said. “It’s doable, let’s do it.”

Holiday Giving Tree benefits Humanitarian Service Project

Serving the community for more than 40 years, Elmhurst Dental Care is now in its 4th year of supporting the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) at the holidays. In the lobby of the practice, located at 333 W. First St., residents will find a Giving Tree where they are invited to leave toys and non-perishable food items to be donated to the project.

In addition to the food and toys donated by staff, patients and the local community, Elmhurst Dental Care will also be sponsoring two families in need via a monetary donation.

According to the non-profit organization’s web site, it is the mission

of the HSP to “alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty brings” to needy seniors and children living in DuPage County “without discrimination or exclusion for any reason.”

Started in 1979 in the home of Karole & Floyd Kettering, HSP helps impoverished families living in DuPage County during the Christmas holiday season by providing them with groceries and gifts. Their Christmas Offering continues to this day, providing food and Christmas presents to 2000+ children and 130+ seniors living in poverty. More than 25 tons of food and as many as 10,000 gifts are distributed each Dec. The Senior Citizen Project began in 1982 with three seniors and now serves 133 every month with groceries delivered straight to their door.

The Children’s Project started in 1992 as the ‘Children’s Birthday Project,’ with the goal of creating birthday memories for children living in poverty.

Hospital holds annual Love Lights celebration

The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation hosted its annual Love Lights Celebration & Open House on Wednesday, Nov. 30 from 4:30 – 6 p.m. in hospital’s East Lobby, where about 50 people gathered for coffee and desserts. Now a holiday tradition, Love Lights is the Foundation’s program that allows those who make a donation to recognize a loved one or special person, such as a caregiver, colleague, volunteer or physician.

Desserts and sweets from local establishments were arranged around the room, adorned for the holidays and live music was performed by Dr. Raymond Janevicius and Dr. Donald Lurye.

As has been tradition, representatives from the hospital’s therapy dog program were on hand – doctors, handlers and dogs themselves! The star of the show was a toy poodle named Petey Pippin, who is smallest therapy dog in the program, according to his handler Lin Francois.

Winter Camp for kids at Courts Plus

Look no further than Courts Plus for winter fun during school break.From Dec. 22-Jan. 6, Courts Plus is offering Winter Camp opportunities for ages 35 months-12 that will keep kids active and having fun.

For ages 35 months-6 years old, check out Winter Action Camp. Pack mornings or afternoons with sports, games, crafts and more. Bring outdoor gear to be ready for fun in the snow. Camp is offered 9-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-3 p.m., Monday-Friday. Children can pack a lunch and stay 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. as a convenient option for parents. The fee is $23 for Courts Plus members; $26 non-members per day or $108 for Courts Plus members; $128 for nonmembers per week fun.

Older kids age 6-12 can look forward to Winter Fun Camp, with sports such as tennis, swimming and play in the snow. Kids will be provided lunch and a T-shirt and can look forward to a weekly field trip.

Camp runs from 9 a.m-3 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Before and after care is also available from 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. for an additional fee. Dress for outdoor winter fun. The fee is $42 for Courts Plus members; $45 for non-members per day or $170 for Courts Plus members; $185 for non-members per week. Register for Winter Camp programs at courts-

Their use can reduce the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, repetitive strain injury, rheumatism and arthritis.

ICCP Jr. High dodgeball champs donate to ASPCA On Saturday, Oct. 29, IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) hosted its Annual “Dodging for Dollars” Charity Dodgeball Tournament for area 7th and 8th grade students. Ten teams participated in this year’s event, representing schools in Elmhurst and surrounding communities.

This double elimination tournament culminated in a highly competitive final match, with the “Average Joes” from Immaculate Conception Grade School in Elmhurst winning the Ultimate Dodgeball Championship. Members of the “Average Joes” team included Eddie Raniere, Jaylen Lomeli, Elise Pedote, Sean McCarthy, Ty McCarthy, Molly Loch, and Sophie Schoonveld. The Average Joes have chosen to donate the night’s $345 cash prize to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). In an effort to promote creativity and team unity for the tournament, students designed their own shirts and came up with unique team names. A prize for best team t-shirt, voted on by the ICCP student volunteers, is also awarded at the tournament. This year’s prize went to “The Elite“of Visitation Grade School in Elmhurst.

Members of The Elite included Jack Kossak, Ella Lawton, William Ryan, Emmett Horn, Lauren Haubner, Mark Schneider, Jack Kavanaugh, and Lauren Gentile.

Concessions were available throughout the evening, and family and friends stayed to cheer on their favorite dodgeball team as the students enjoyed the friendly competition.

Local volunteers collecting gifts for 10,300 children

Elmhurst and surrounding cities volunteers have collected enough gift-filled shoeboxes to reach more than 10,300 children in need through the Samaritan’s Purse project, Operation Christmas Child.

This season's collection surpassed last year's gift donations. The West Suburban Chicago Illinois for Operation Christmas Child is now thanking the community for their gift donations already on their way to children in need worldwide. For many of these children, the shoebox gift delivered through this local project will be the first gift they will have ever received.

Although local drop-off locations have closed for the season, there is still time to pack a gift-filled shoebox online for children suffering from poverty, natural disaster war, terror, disease and famine. Like online shopping, visitors can browse samaritanspurse.org/occ to select gifts matched to a child’s specific age and gender, then finish by uploading a photo and writing a note of encouragement to be included in the shoebox they build online. They can also follow their box to discover where in the world it will be delivered. Par-

ticipants can give a $25 gift card to a family member or friend so they can join in the excitement of Operation Christmas Child by packing a shoebox gift online. These shoeboxes—filled with school supplies,toys, hygiene items and notes of encouragement—are delivered to children in some of the hardest-to-reach countries around the world.

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world, and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 135 million giftfilled shoeboxes to children in more than 150 countries and territories.

For many of these children, the giftfilled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received.

State House fails to override Rauner vetoes on voterregistration, prevailing-wage bills Illinois News Network Lawmakers in the Illinois House failed to override the Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto on several measures recently, including a measure to automatically register people to vote any time they interact with state government.

The measure fell four votes short of overriding Rauner’s veto. Democrats said those who don’t support the legislation want to disenfranchise voters. State Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) said that’s not the case at all. Demmer said the measure was a step in the right direction, but wasn’t there yet.

“Look at the positive, proactive solutions that we’ve offered, and let’s take the time that we have now, the time that we have between today and when the next election takes place…to make sure we get it right,” he said.

Republican automatic voter registration measures await hearings.

Meanwhile, the state House also failed to override Rauner on a measure the business community said would have increased the cost of business and the price of taxpayer-funded public works projects.

The measure would have required localities’ prevailing wage rates to reflect collective bargaining wages, if those wages cover a third of the workforce.

“Simply having the idea that whatever the union rate is, is the prevailing wage is circular logic,” Batinick said. “So basically, the prevailing wage is whatever is negotiated by the union, which doesn’t seem like the true prevailing wage since it doesn’t account for what’s happening in the private sector.”

Business groups have said the measure would have increased business costs and the price of public works projects, taking money away from other important government services.

The House did override Rauner on a bill that affects Chicago firefighters.

Elmhurst teen auditions for America’s Got Talent Shares experience of dance performance for TV show

Far from a timid Elmhurst teen, 13-year-old Sofie SanFilippo boldly performed her dance routine for the judges of America’s Got Talent (AGT) at Chicago’s McCormack Center on November 12.

The Sandburg Middle School 8th grader arrived with hundreds of other contestants and was placed in a “holding room” which she described as a “huge room with a dance floor in the middle.” As Sofie and the other contestants practiced their routines, an AGT representative selected Sofie from the group to showcase her dance as an example of some of the talent that day.

“It was so exciting to be picked from the group to be videotaped just from them watching me practice,” she said. “It took a lot of my nervousness away.”

Later, Sofie was called to the audition room with four other contestants, where each one took their turn performing their time allotted one minute thirty second routine before a three judge panel, including Nigel Caaro, producer of AGT. “I was a little scared while I was waiting for my turn. I was third in line,” she said. “But once I started performing, I wasn’t nervous at all. And after I finished, I felt very proud of myself.”

Sofie’s routine was a unique form of dance, which combined turns, leaps, and Cirque du Soleil type flexibility moves. She stated that she choreographed most of her routine on her own, but received help and guidance from her instructors at Dance Explosion, where she has trained for the last four years. Although she had taken dance classes in the past, it was not until Sofie started dancing at Dance Explosion that her passion for dancing ignited.

“It was a competitive team, and really challenged and inspired me,”

she said. “After the first year I liked it so much I really started to take it seriously.” She was voted most improved after her second year on the team.

Her areas of dance include jazz, lyrical (a combination of jazz and ballet), contemporary, hip-hop, and ballet, but her flexibility moves are what sets her apart. She has nearly 5,000 followers on Instagram® and has won a flexibility contest on Instagram.

In addition to attending dance classes five nights a week, Sofie spends hours every night in her basement stretching and practicing her dancing skills.

“I use my iPad to videotape myself to perfect my moves,” she said. “I also read up on dance [publications] to get tips on dancing and practicing, and follow choreographers from So You Think You Can Dance to get ideas.”

Last year Sofie auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance. Although she was not selected, she said that she gained a lot of experience just from trying out. She feels that experience helped her with her recent AGT audition. She said it was a very humbling experience to see so many people from all over the country with great talent trying to live their dream just like her.

If chosen by AGT to move on to the next level, which she will learn in January, Sofie will go to Hollywood in April. Although she is a very dedicated, focused, and talented dancer with high hopes, Sofie realizes only 30 contestants will be selected from the Chicago auditions. She is grateful she had the opportunity to audition.

Regardless of the outcome, she will continue to passionately participate in dance.

“I feel that if I work really hard and keep focused, I can be a great dancer.”

Her dream is to open her own dance studio or be an actress.

Numbers don’t lie IC Catholic Prep football team posted some eye-opening statistics this season

The IC Catholic Prep football team’s run to the Class 3A state championship was an impressive one to say the least.

And the Knights have the statistics to back it up.

IC Catholic Prep went a perfect 14-0 and averaged an eye-opening 51.1 points per contest while limiting the majority of its opponents to under 10 points each game (94 points allowed in 14 games). Ten of the Knights opponents scored six or less points and eight failed to score a point, including Carlinville in the Class 3A state title game.

For context, even though the Knights played four more games than three of its foes in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division, the next highest point total from a MSC Blue team was 289 points (average of 28.9 points per game).

The domination for IC Catholic Prep was equally impressive from an individual statistical perspective.

The Knights averaged 291 yards rushing per game, well above the national high school average according to one national statistical service and scored 100 total touchdowns, again well above the national average.

Quarterback Luke Ricobene completed 142 of 217 passes for 2,389 yards. He threw 30 touchdowns against only nine interceptions and had a very strong quarterback rating of 124.8.

In the backfield, standout Jordan Rowell carried the ball only 178 times, but gained a whopping 2,297 yards (12.9 yards per carry or more than a first down every time he touched the ball). He scored 37 rushing touchdowns and broke the 100-yard rushing barrier in 11 games he played in.

He averaged 164 yards a game on the ground and had a 99-yard long run.

Lazerick Eatman ran 80 times for 523 yards (6.5 yards per carry) and scored five touchdowns. Ricobene ran 49 times for 648 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He averaged 13.2 yards per carry (again, more than a first down every time he ran with it). As a team, the Knights averaged just over a first down (10.4 yards per carry) every time a running play was executed.

Matt Sutton led a balanced receiving unit with 30 catches for 580 yards (19.3 per catch). He scored eight touchdowns and had a long catch of 76 yards. Rowell caught 32 passes for 543 yards and scored five receiving touchdowns. He averaged 17.0 yards per catch. Khalil Saunders caught 19 passes for 302 yards and four touchdowns (15.9 yards per catch) and Eatman had

19 catches for 253 yards (13.3 yards per catch) and five touchdowns. Seven different IC Catholic Prep receivers caught touchdown passes (Luke Calles, Khali Sanders and Brendan Russ round out that group).

IC Catholic Prep also turned the ball over only 10 times this season on offense.

Rowell finished with 2,882 all-purpose yards. Eatman had 931. Ricobene finished with 3,037 total yards of offense.

On defense, sophomore Kemon Reese led the team with 152 total tackles (3 tackles for loss). Chris Johnson, a senior, had 149 tackles and seven tackles for loss. Jimmy Kenneally had 82 tackles and led the team with 17 tackles for loss. Matt Jordan had 61 tackles and six tackles for loss. Saunders had 59 tackles and three tackles for loss. Sanders had 62 tackles and two tackles for loss. Dylan Packer had 48 tackles and six tackles for loss. Robert Vitek had 40 tackles and three tackles for loss. As a team, IC Catholic Prep had 53 tackles for loss.

The Knights also had 30 quarterback sacks. Kenneally had eight sacks for 65 yards in losses and also had 14 hurries. Jordan had six sacks for 53 yards in losses. Reese had three sacks for 23 yards in losses and Ricky Mysliwiec, a sophomore, had three sacks for 27 yards in losses.

IC Catholic Prep also had 26 interceptions and 16 fumble recoveries for a turnover ratio of plus-32 (42 on defense minus 10 turnovers on offense).

Saunders led the team with four interceptions. Jordan, Sutton and Rowell each had three interceptions. Ricobene had two picks that were returned 65 yards. Sutton had 52 return yards on interceptions.

Eatman and Rowell led the team in pass deflections with seven. Saunders and Sutton each had six and Sanders had five. Saunders led the team with six fumble recoveries. Kenneally had two fumble returns for 45 yards. He also led the team with five forced fumbles. Reese had four forced fumbles.

Jordan and Mysliwiec each blocked a punt.

Sam Buffo kicked 72 extra points and made three field goals. The Knight also made 26 two-point conversions with Rowell leading the way with 12.

Ricobene had six.

Rowell had 42 total touchdowns, followed by Eatman with 12 and Ricobene with 11. Sutton had nine and Saunders had seven. Jordan was credited with a safety. Jordan, Saunders, Eatman and Sean Hipskind each returned an interception for a touchdown. Saunders did it twice. Eatman returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

In recent years, the York boys basketball team has proven itself as a consistent top-tier performer in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division.

The Dukes did nothing to disprove that after a 46-43 WSC Silver win on the road in Glen Ellyn against Glenbard West.

The win moved York to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Timothy Christian boys basketball team opens conference play Trojans start year with strong play at Lisle tournament; Davidson, Orange all-tournament picks

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team opened Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play with a recent 54-51 loss at home to Chicago Christian.

After playing to a 9-9 tie through a quarter, Timothy held a 21-20 lead heading into halftime and led 33-32 heading into the fourth.

Chicago Christian outscored Timothy 22-18 in the final stanza.

Joey Davidson led the Trojans with 17 points. Brandon Orange finished with 12 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Jonny Strube added nine points, while Jimmy Allen had seven points and Ty Merrick had five.

Davidson hit three 3-pointers, while Strube and Allen each hit a pair of threes. Timothy had seven 3-pointers in the game.

Orange and Strube each had six rebounds. Merrick handed out six assists. Timothy shot 38 percent from the field.

From earlier action, Timothy coach Jack LeGrand was pleased with what he saw from his team during its Lisle tournament-championship run. The Trojans went 4-0 at Lisle.

“It was a really good start,” said LeGrand. “They had a good tournament and the kids did a nice job. I’m real excited about this team. They are very competitive in practice. They compete every day and they push each other. There is a lot of unselfish play. They share the ball and are very encouraging to each other.”

LeGrand was impressed with the balance displayed throughout the roster at Lisle. “We have guys who are contributing in different ways,” he said. “Having different guys contribute each night is really nice. It’s great to see the next guy step up.”

Davidson and Orange both earned all-tournament honors. “Joey and Brandon had solid tournaments,” said LeGrand. “Joey had some good scoring nights. He played a consistent game. Brandon is off to a good start. He’s come a long way. He has promise. He has good foot work and he’s a big guy who alters other teams’ shots. On the offensive end he has a nice touch and a nice shot.”

LeGrand also lauded the play of Strube in the tournament. “Jonny had a really good tournament. He played some really good defense and helped us on the boards and knocked down some open shots. He shot pretty well from three.”

And the Trojans benefited from contributions from the likes of Merrick, Allen, Michael Thomas and Trayvon Williams. “They all gave us great guard play.”

Nick Huisman and Nick Tameling also helped out underneath. “Both of them are tall and played well around the basket. It’s good to have big guys that can do that,” said LeGrand. “Overall, I was proud of their unselfishness. They shared the ball and defended well. It’s a fun group to watch and coach.”

LeGrand said Timothy has been bolstered this year not only by talented returning players, but by a junior class that enjoyed success at the lower levels.

“We had hoped to get off to a good start,” he said. “The present junior group, we kept them together and did not separate them. We chose to keep them as a group and they play really well together. I think that’s helped us with familiarity. They understand each other and know where guys are going to be and where to find people for open shots. This entire group is extremely coachable and they practice hard.”

York then notched a 47-32 win over Waubonsie Valley. After a 14-14 tie in the first quarter, York used a 12-5 run to take a 26-19 lead into halftime. Waubonsie Valley cut the lead to 36-30 heading into the fourth, but York outscored its foe 11-2 in the final quarter.

Jordan Gray led the Dukes with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 9-for-13 from the field. Trapani had 12 points. Pedote finished with six points and two steals, while Cohn had five points and four assists.

York shot 50 percent from the field and also hit six 3-pointers.

Trapani and Pedote each had two 3s. Kosich chipped in three assists.

The Dukes’ lone blemish in the tournament came via a 71-57 loss to Deerfield. York trailed 16-12 after the first quarter and 29-21 at halftime. Deerfield outscored York 23-18 in the third quarter and 19-18 in the fourth.

York lost despite shooting 56 percent from the field. Gray led the way with 17 points. Trapani had 12 points and shot 4-for-6 from the 3-point line in racking up those points. Kosich had 10 points, six assists and two steals and also sank two 3-pointers. Cohn finished with

11 points and also connected on a pair of threes. Pedote had four rebounds and three steals.

York shot 8-for-16 from the 3-point line in the game.

Angelo Martucci added five points on the strength of a 3-for-3 effort from the foul line.

York wrapped up tournament play with a 67-51 victory over Maine West.

York led 20-15 after the first quarter and 41-26 at halftime. The Dukes finished third in the tournament with a 3-1 mark.

Gray led the Dukes with 16 points and eight rebounds. Kosich had 15 points and two steals. Cohn finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Trapani had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Martucci ended with five points and four steals.

The Dukes shot 53.9 percent from the field and connected on 19 of 23 free-throw tries (83 percent).

York again was prolific from the 3-point line with six made. Trapani led the way in that regard with two.

Pedote added four assists and two steals. Dan Brandolino made one 3-pointer and had two steals and on rebound. York had 14 steals in the game.

Gray and Trapani were named to the all-tournament team for their performances. Gray averaged 15.5 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per contest in the tournament, while shooting 56.8 percent from the field. Trapani averaged 10.8 points per game and had eight steals. He shot 11-for-23 from the 3-point line (47.8 percent) in the four games.

In the tournament, York shot 50.3 percent from the field, 43.3 percent from the 3-point line (29-for-67) and 80 percent from the foul line (44-for-55).

The York girls basketball team followed up on its strong showing at Thanksgiving by opening West Suburban Conference Silver Division play with a road victory.

The Dukes were 37-34 WSC Silver winners at Lyons Township. The win moved York to 4-1 overall.

York led 15-10 after the first quarter but went into halftime tied 20-20. Lyons took a 27-26 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Dukes outscored the home team 11-7 in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Kathleen Levins led the Dukes with 13 points and shot 9-for-13 from the free-throw line.

She also had four rebounds and three steals. Senior Jaclyn Saco added nine points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting from the 3-point line.

Junior Danielle Dennis had six points. Junior Hailey Walker made a

3-pointer. Junior Madison Park had five rebounds, while senior Jenna Dvorak had four rebounds.

Through five games, Levins was leading the team in scoring at 8.6 per game. Dennis and Caylin Rufus both were averaging 8.2 points per game, while Saco was averaging 5.8 points.

Dennis was tops on the team in rebounding at 5.8 per game. Park was averaging 4.0 rebounds. Levins was averaging 3.2 rebounds per game, while Rufus was averaging 3.0 per game. Saco and Park were tied for the team lead in steals with 10 each. Rufus was tops on the team in blocks at 1.0 per game.

Levins was leading the team in free-throw shooting at 70 percent (19-for-27).

York played Hinsdale Central in a WSC Silver game earlier in the week and hosts Glenbard West Saturday at 5 p.m. in a Paint the Gym

Timothy Christian girls basketball The Timothy Christian girls basketball team dropped a 55-33 Metro Suburban Conference Red Division game to St. Edward.

Ava Venema led the Trojans with nine points and 16 rebounds. Heidi Westra had seven points, while Olivia Schuringa had five points and six rebounds.

The Trojans also dropped a 5333 MSC Red decision to Chicago Christian. Venema had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Jordyn Strube had 10 points, three rebounds and five steals.

The Trojans have a busy week.

Timothy played Elmwood Park earlier in the week and head to Ridgewood tonight for a MSC Red game before facing Westmont Saturday in a matinee home non-conference game.

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team scores key win over Riverside-Brookfield Meurer hits game-winning 3-point shot for Knights

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team started off the conference portion of its schedule with a statement victory.

The Knights were 73-70 winners over perennial Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division power Riverside-Brookfield in a game played in Elmhurst.

IC Catholic Prep won the game when Alex Meurer hit a 3-pointer off a feed from Austin Reed. The Knights moved to a perfect 6-0 with

the win.

The Knights led 18-9 after the first quarter and 32-31 at halftime after R-B went on a 22-14 run. R-B, which won the conference last year, led 5552 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Knights outscored the visiting team 21-15 in the fourth.

Austin Reed led the Knights with 21 points. Meurer added 17 points, while Tony Cheng had 12 points.

Amari Reed had eight points and Tony Gaudio had seven points. The Knights sank eight 3-pointers with Austin Reed hitting three, Cheng and Meurer each hitting two and Gaudio hitting one.

Earlier in the week, the Knights were 58-42 winners over Lisle in non-conference play. IC Catholic Prep led 14-7 after the first quarter and 32-15 heading into the third quarter.

Prep with 26 points. Meurer had 11 points, while Cheng had six points and Nico Gaudio, Griffen Eichhorn and Galvin Gescey each had four points. Austin Reed hit five 3-pointers in the game. Cheng had two and Meurer had one 3-pointer.

The Knights headed into last week fresh off winning the Coal City tournament over the Thanksgiving holiday.

“The tournament went well even though we were a little shorthanded because of the football guys (IC Catholic Prep won the Class 3A state football title the day after Thanksgiving in Champaign),” said Tyrrell.

The team also played much of the tournament without Amari Reed due to an injury suffered in the second game of the tournament.

“We received contributions from everybody on the team, which is very encouraging,” said Tyrrell. “It’s a big

positive to see that.”

Austin Reed and Cheng both were named to the all-tournament team.

“Both of them shot the ball extremely well,” said Tyrrell. “It’s been really encouraging to see Kevin step up. We knew Austin was going to be a key guy and thought Kevin would be as well. He shoots with a lot of confidence. He’s not rushing things and he has a nice release.”

Meurer was the team’s third-leading scorer in the tournament. “Alex was guarding the other team’s best players and did an outstanding job for us,” said Tyrrell.

Tony Gaudio and Gescey also made key contributions. “Tony and Galvin gave us outstanding minutes throughout the tournament,” said Tyrrell. “Galvin stepped up and took advantage of minutes he earned. He contributed on both ends of the floor and was hustling and getting his

hands on the ball and keeping things alive throughout possessions.”

Tyrrell also lauded the bench contributions of Pat Shannon and Eichhorn. “Both of those guys gave us a burst of energy off the bench, especially on the defensive end,” the coach said.

Tyrrell was happy with the tournament result given the competition the Knights saw. “We played some solid Class 2A and 3A competitions,” he said. “We had some physical and intense games and our guys were up to the challenge. We were losing to Morris at halftime and made some adjustments. I was extremely happy.

This was a total team effort. I’m very proud of all the boys. We needed everybody and everybody played a role and that led us to a championship.

Starting the season off 4-0 in a tournament is an excellent first step.”

IC Catholic Prep’s Meurer sinks game-winning 3-pointer to help team move to 6-0

When the chips were on the line, IC Catholic Prep’s Alex Meurer hit the jackpot.

Meurer sank a game-winning 3-pointer to help the Knights’ boys basketball team score a hard-fought 73-70 win over defending conference-champion Riverside-Brookfield. The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 6-0 on the young season.

“It’s probably the coolest play that ever happened with me,” Meurer said. “The play was meant for Austin Reed (21 points) with two screens.

Kevin (Cheng) and I were in the corner and my guy (R-B defender) went to go double Austin and that left me open. My guy thought Austin might take it to the hole. Austin passed it to me and the rest was history.”

Meurer said nerves didn’t play a factor during the shot.

“I wasn’t really thinking about it,” he said. “I was thinking that it was going to go in. I wasn’t thinking it was not going in. There was such joy making the game-winning shot and beating R-B. I don’t think they’ve ever lost in this conference. It’s a great feeling knowing that I can help

the team. We have a great team.”

Meurer, who had 11 points in a win earlier last week against Lisle and struck for 17 in the R-B game, added the shot has upped his confidence level even more.

“I have more confidence in my shooting,” said Meurer, who had a combined three 3-pointers in the two wins against Lisle and R-B. “I feel a lot better on the court.”

Meurer said IC Catholic Prep’s hot start can be traced to the makeup of the team. “We’ve done a really good job of coming together,” he said.

“Last year’s sophomore team went 26-2 plus we have a lot of returning varsity talent. We found how to gel together. We work really well together as a team.”

Meurer also explained the significance of the win against a larger-en-

rollment R-B team. “We’re extremely excited about that,” he said. “After the game everybody was going crazy because we won such a big game and won it like that. We know we will play them again and we know we have to face other tough teams such as St. Patrick’s. Hopefully people will see the team from I-C is pretty good. We’re going to keep working hard.”

Illinois News Network There’s a new comptroller and Gov. Bruce Rauner hopes she will stand strong for state employee pay as her predecessor did.

Rauner said Friday he’s worried Comptroller Susana Mendoza won’t be as steady as Comptroller Leslie Munger on state employee pay without a budget.

“When Attorney General Lisa Madigan went to court to try and stop our state employees from getting paid to create a crisis, Comptroller Munger stood firm in court and helped prevent that crisis and that shut down,” Rauner said. “I hope Comptroller Mendoza will do likewise.”

Before being sworn in Mendoza said last week that issue is up to the Attorney General to press, but “every single option from a legal perspective is one that we have a responsibility to look at when it comes to try and deal with this fiscal crisis.”

A St. Clair County judge last year ordered state employee pay to continue, but an Illinois Supreme Court ruling earlier this year on a separate case opened the door for another possible court battle. The Attorney General’s Office has said the issue is under review.

Meanwhile, Mendoza wants lawmakers to understand she will continue to put their pay at a lower priority as the state tries to pay it’s backlog of bills.

The outgoing comptroller put lawmaker and constitutional officer pay at the back of the line behind money for social services.

Mendoza agreed with Munger’s policy and said that’s the fair thing to do if there’s no budget.

“I hope my former colleagues in the legislature will understand my decision to continue to prioritize the

Two weekend meetings of the state’s political leaders have resulted in more questions than answers on what’s going to happen on Jan. 1, when the state’s stopgap spending plan expires. House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, says the best way forward is to craft another short-term, stopgap budget akin to what the state has been running on since July of 2015. That’s when lawmakers failed to pass a balanced budget, leaving only a number of six-month long spending bills that kept state services from shutting down but resulted in record levels of spending without adequate funding.

If you plan to buy a fresh tree, make sure you’re purchasing the freshest tree possible. The trunk should feel slightly sticky to the touch, and the needles should be green and not fall off when touched.

Following are some other tips: Cut an inch or two off of the base of the trunk before setting it up.

Be sure the tree is at least three feet from any heat source.

Place the tree in a stand that holds an adequate amount of water and add water every day.

Replace any light strings with worn or broken cords, or loose bulb connections.

Never use lighted candles on or near the tree.

Turn off tree lights before leaving home or going to sleep.

Dispose of the tree as soon as it begins dropping needles.

Millions of dollars in money spent on raises recently issued to comply with a new federal regulation are now in limbo after a federal court ruled that the Obama Administration’s Department of Labor overstepped its constitutional bounds when it said salaried employees making less than $47,000 would be eligible for overtime.

Public employers who instituted raises to comply with the rule now face a tough decision: Let employees keep the raises or take the tax dollars back in the name of fiscal responsibility.

College and University Professional Association of Human Resources President Andy Brantley said public schools like the University of Illinois that already have granted some raises face a tough decision.

“They have to seriously consider what that means in terms of their decision making from this point forward,” he said. “Do they risk a disgruntled employee by reversing some of those raises?”

Diana Furchtgott-Roth, a Manhattan Institute economist and an adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, said the rule will not happen and that the money spent is wasted.

“This has resulted in millions of dollars wasted from institutions that

“Both taxpayer dollars and private dollars invested to comply are what we call in economics ‘a sunk cost.’ ” Furchtgott-Roth said that while the sunk cost of preparing for the new threshold is very unfortunate, employers are still going to be better off than if the regulation were in place.

are handling the situation differently: -According to the State Comptroller’s Office, 9,800 employees were eligible for overtime under the rule change. State budget officials have not responded as to what, if anything, was implemented before the judge placed the injunction on the rule last month.

– University of Illinois Spokeswoman Robin Kaler said 1,300 employees at the Urbana campus either would be given raises, paid overtime

or have their hours restricted as of Nov. 16. Some were given raises, but now they are reviewing the ramifications of the court ruling before taking further action.

– Illinois State University was planning on spending up to $2.2 million annually to get 200 employees in line with the now-stalled standard, but spokesman Jay Groves said no raises had been given out yet and the process is on hold while they await direction from the courts.

– A spokeswoman for Eastern Illinois University said its process was put on hold before anything could be implemented and the work to transition identified employees to a new pay classification of “non-exempt” has also been delayed.

– Sherrie Senkfor, director of Human Resources at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville had this to say: “We have updated our campus community on the FLSA changes that have been discussed over the

past year. We are not assuming at this point that the overtime rule will be permanently barred. We will still have a plan to move forward, if necessary, in the future.”

Representatives from other universities didn’t provide any numbers on the cost to comply nor would they respond to requests for comment.

The Department of Labor said more than 193,000 Illinoisans would have been affected by the new regulation.

State lawmakers wonder what election of Trump means for Medicaid waiver request Illinois News Network No one in Springfield is sure what the election of Donald Trump is going to mean for the state’s massive Medicaid program, or the state’s request for a waiver to manage its Medicaid funds a bit differently.

President-elect Trump said he wants to repeal and replace Obamacare, but that may take awhile. The state House Republicans’ Medicaid pointman, State Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) said no one seems to know what Congress can do.

“I think there are still a lot of questions about how the Trump administration will handle national health care policy,” he said.

“There’s been quite a bit of talk about ‘repealing and replacing Obamacare’ with a different proposal. What the proposal looks like, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to be able to pass in the House and the Senate.”

Demmer also said Illinois is going to have to wait and see on its Medicaid waiver. The state asked President Obama for more power to decide how it manages Medicaid spending, but it hasn’t heard anything yet.

“When it comes to state waivers, there are good indications that House and Senate Republicans in Washington want to give more flexibility to states in managing their Medicaid programs,” he said.

Illinois’ waiver would allow the state to bill the federal government for some of the cost of treating mental illness and drug addiction for inmates in the state’s correctional system. The state said the change could save taxpayers more than a billion dollars over five years.

Many historical elements have been incorporated throughout the home, including 150-year-old church pews and hooks, and a wine rack from the Fireside Inn, which was part of the Corner Cottage in Elmhurst that Ellen’s Uncle owned.
