New law requires school counselors to be properly licensed, certified

In response to the recent discovery that Illinois school districts have hired individuals as school counselors without the proper licensing and certification, legislation was initiated to protect the mental health of students and ensure only licensed school counselors may provide these crucial services.

With support from the Illinois School Counselor Association and the Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association, House Bill 4514 asserts that if a school district is hiring someone with the title “school counselor,” they must be certified and endorsed as a school counselor—with a Master’s degree in school counseling, 600 hours of teaching experience, appropriate casework and service experience and passed the required school counseling examinations. They have been thoroughly trained to provide counseling to students and versed in addressing emotional and mental health issues and provide career planning.

“I want to thank … the Illinois Legislature for assuring that students and parents can be confident someone fulfilling the job of a school counselor has adequate training,” said Illinois School Counselor Association Executive Director Daniel Staci. “School counselors in Illinois must have a Master’s degree in counseling, which includes training to provide individual and group counseling, as well as college and career development counseling. They develop and implement important school-based prevention programs. These may include anti-bullying, suicide prevention, and body image programming to name a few.”

House Bill 4514 passed both Chambers on Thursday, Nov. 28, becoming law and effective immediately.

ICGS gives to Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Drive On the chilly, snowy morning of Tuesday, Nov. 27, Immaculate Conception Grade School student council members, staff members, and first and second graders joined ABC 7 meteorologist Tracy Butler on the Chicago news station’s early morning broadcast. During the week before Thanksgiving, ICGS collected Christmas toys for the United States Marine Corps’ “Toys for Tots” campaign. On the 27th, the Marines, ABC 7 Chicago, and the IHOP Restaurant in Melrose Park sponsored, “Stuff the Truck,” an opportunity for the ICGS students to stuff a military truck with all of the toys they collected. The event was ICGS students help the United States Marine Corps. with their “Toys for Tots” toy collection on Tuesday, televised during the morning weather Nov. 27. reports on ABC.

Five County-wide officials, 12 County Board members sworn in to office

DuPage County hosted an inauguration ceremony Monday for 17 elected officials who were sworn into office.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin presided over the event.

DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin delivered his third inaugural address.

Cronin was first elected to the office of County Board Chairman in 2010.

GRACE KUNESH, 93 Grace Kunesh, 93, formerly of Elmhurst, passed away October 31, 2018.

She was born March 26, 1925. She was the loving mother of Pat Bielecki (Dennis), Linda, Bob (Beth), and John (Renee); grandmother of Trisha, Jim, Mike, Krista, Matt, Dan, and Casey; and great grandmother of Kayla, Hayley, and Addison. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) Kunesh, parents John and Irene Orsahl, brother Arne Orsahl, and sister, Emily Dwyer. A celebration of her life will be held on January 13, 2019, at 2 p.m. at DuPage Care Center in Wheaton. Interment will be private. Arrangements provided by the family.

Yadav Nathwani sworn in as 24th District Senator First Indian-American member of Illinois Senate in history

Milton Township Vice-Chairman Yadav “Nick” Nathwani was appointed and sworn in as the new State Senator for the 24th District to represent the interests of his west suburban constituents for the remainder of the 100th General Assembly. Nathwani made Illinois history as the first Indian-American member to serve in the Illinois State Senate.

“It is vitally important the 24th District has a voice and a representative in these final weeks when important votes are being taken,” said Nathwani. “While my time in the Senate is limited, I am fully dedicated to addressing constituent issues, advocating for better government policies, and most importantly, serving the interests of our communities. It is a distinct honor to serve, and I have begun work immediately in Springfield to begin my committee assignments and discussions for Legislative Veto Session. I encourage residents to stay involved and reach out to me about their legislative priorities. Their input will guide my votes over the following weeks.”

Nathwani currently leads the Milton Township Republican Central Committee as Vice-Chairman and has served as a Trustee for more than five years.

Prior to the Township, he was elected as the Finance Commissioner for the Village of Glen Ellyn and a Board Member of the

Glenbard Township High School District 87, where he first began his public service in local government at the age of 25.

Professionally, Nathwani works full-time as the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer for a professional paving and concrete company bringing a wealth of financial and revenue knowledge to the Illinois Senate.

Given his diverse government and business background, Nathwani has been appointed as the Minority Spokesman on the Senate Financial Institutions Committee and will serve on the Senate Committees for Gaming, Commerce and Economic Development, Energy and Public Utilities, as well as the Special Committee on Oversight of Medicaid Managed Care.

Nathwani was ceremonially sworn in on the Senate Floor by Appellate Court Judge Pete C. Cavanagh and Senate Republican Leader Bill Brady on Tuesday, Nov. 27, having taken office Monday, Nov. 26.

He has declined the offer of a state pension and health care for his time in the Senate as a commitment to the taxpayers and public service.

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

1:42 a.m.

Logan J. Techentin, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 10:08 p.m.

Assault, battery

Nov. 28 A reporting officer located the suspect in the street in the 500 block of N. Indiana at around 3:54 a.m. The suspect told police he was involved in a fight with his friend who was no longer at the scene. No complaints are to be signed at this time.

Nov. 23 Police said officers responded at around 6:50 p.m. for a battery report in the 200 block of W. Eggleston involving a father and his daughter’s boyfriend. Further investigation is pending.

Criminal damage

Nov. 26 A victim in the 100 block of Highland told police at around 11:05 a.m. that a large tree fell from the parkway and landed his house and fence.

Oct. 30-Nov. 1 A victim in the 200 block of E. Third told police that an unknown suspect(s) damaged the front door and frame and also damaged the rear sliding door with large scratches sometime between the above dates.

Criminal trespass to property

Nov. 24 A complainant at a restaurant in the 400 block of N. York told police at around 8:34 p.m. that he observed a juvenile suspect enter and exit a permanently closed business. Officers made contact with the suspect at another business nearby. Police said the suspect related that he entered the building to see what it looked like inside. The suspect was released at the scene to his parent and will be recommended to the Peer Jury.

Disorderly conduct

Nov. 26 Police said they were notified about an inappropriate posting that was created and then posted to Snapchat by two middle school students in the 100 block of W. Butterfield at around 9:27 a.m. The post was removed a short time later and the juvenile subject’s parents were notified. A juvenile disposition is pending.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication

Nov. 23 Hector Rodrigo Gonzalez-Ramirez, 27, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and York at around 4:04 a.m.

Nov. 22 Stephen Carter, 28, of Gilberts, was charged with DUI and failure to yield turning left sub-

Richard C. Palmer, 47, of Melrose Park, was charged with aggravated DUI and aggravated driving while license revoked near North and Melrose at around 1:10 a.m. Police said Palmer’s vehicle was stopped due to a passenger not wearing a seat belt.

Michael Rinaldi, 26, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, speeding, improper lane usage and disobeying a traffic control device near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 1:04 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Rinaldi was found to be DUI-drugs and also was found to be in possession of cannabis and alprazolam.

Fleeing, eluding

Nov. 28 Police said that subsequent to an attempted retail theft in Villa Park, a reporting officer observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle. A traffic stop was attempted at around 9:38 p.m., and the vehicle fled eastbound on I-290 from North Avenue. The vehicle accelerated and the traffic stop was terminated.

Harassment, threats

Sept. 20-Nov. 28 A complainant in the 400 block of E. South St. told police at around 10:13 a.m. that the suspect has been texting and emailing the complainant looking for a relationship. The complainant does not want to sign complaints, but wants the suspect to cease all contact. The suspect was advised that he would be arrested if he had any further contact with the complainant.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Nov. 25 Cole R. Blank, 19, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to yield turning left, while Jack M. Crowley, 19, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Illinois at around 12:50 a.m.

Jalon Chiles, 20, of Bellwood, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis near Butterfield and Commonwealth at around 9:13 a.m.

William G. Nieves, 23, of Chicago, was issued citations for speeding and possession of drug paraphernalia, while Vanessa Zurita, 22, of Chicago, was issue a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Willow at around

Nov. 24 Mason G. Carlini, 18, and Mario Carlini, 18, both of Villa Park, were issued citations for possession of cannabis subsequent to a loud music complaint in the 300 block of Kimball at around 1:05 a.m.

Adam M. Filas, 18, of Franklin Park, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding, while Leonardo A. Corona, 18, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia near Palmer and Schiller at around 2:27 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, a glass smoking pipe was in plain view and an odor of cannabis was coming from inside of the vehicle. A search of the vehicle yielded cannabis and psilocin mushrooms, according to police.

Public indecency

Nov. 26 Police said officers responded to the report of a suspect who had exposed his genitalia in the 200 block of N. Clinton at around 2:10 p.m.

The victims told police that while they were on the front porch, they saw suspect described as a black male approximately 35 years old, wearing a red knit winter hat, gray jacket, and gray sweatpants walking on the sidewalk. The victims related the unknown suspect then unfastened his pants and exposed himself while talking on a cell phone. The suspect then continued walking north on Clinton. The area was checked with no results.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

lice said a complainant related she observed Lopez carry several items of merchandise into the changing room, and exit the changing room without the merchandise. According to police, Lopez left the store and admitted to stealing the merchandise.

Nov. 22-Nov. 23 Attempted residential burglary was reported in the 400 block of Emery Lane sometime between the above dates. A victim told police that she felt cold air coming from the basement and found a basement window was pushed in. Nothing appears to have been taken from the home.

Nov. 22 A stolen vehicle was reported in the 600 block of County Line Road at around 10:52 a.m. The complainant, a salesman for a company in Aurora, told police that his company delivers trailers of pallets to a company located in Elmhurst. On Nov. 20, a semi trailer filled with pallets was left at the rear of the company’s parking lot. On the above date, the complainant discovered the trailer was missing.

Theft was reported at a mobile phone store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 5:08 a.m. Police said officers located a smashed front door and window at the store. Several cell phones were reportedly taken by three suspects who exited the store after approximately 30 seconds and fled on Route 83 in a white Jeep Cherokee. The jeep had been reported stolen from Harvey and was recovered unoccupied at a tow yard on Nov. 23. Further investigation is pending.

Theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 8:20 a.m. A victim told police that she was missing her brown Coach brand wallet. The victim stated she believes someone may have taken her wallet while she was paying for her purchases. The victim’s driver’s license was entered into LEADS.

Nov. 10 Theft was reported in the 200 block of S. Fair at around 4:36 p.m. A victim told police that sometime on the above date, an unknown suspect(s) removed a package from his front door step. The USPS tracking number shows Nov. 25 Natalia Lopez, 30, of Streamwood, was the package had been left in the mailbox. charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 USPS and Ebay advised the victim to report block of S. More crime news Three women charged in domestic battery incidents

On Nov. 21, police said that, subsequent to a call for a domestic battery in the 800 block of N. York at around 2:20 p.m., a 22-year-old Elmhurst woman was observed grabbing and pulling the arms of the victim. Police said the woman attempted to leave the scene and, while being detained, she hit and spit on a reporting officer.

A 25-year-old Milwaukee woman at the scene allegedly provided a false name, and was found to have five warrants out of Wisconsin. The Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery, battery to a police officer and resisting arrest. The Milwaukee woman was charged with obstructing identification and being a fugitive from justice.

On Nov. 22, a 56-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 200 block of N. Oak Lawn at around 12:12 p.m. A victim told police that while she was speaking on the phone, the suspect allegedly grabbed

the phone and pulled out some of her hair. The suspect admitted these acts took place, according to police.

Also on Nov. 22, a 48-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery and unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence in the 100 block of Fellows Court at around 11:03 p.m.

Police said a victim related that the suspect scratched his face. Officers observed scratch marks on the victim’s head.

Suspect asks to see necklace, then departs with it

On Nov. 28, retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 7:17 p.m. Police said the suspect had entered the store and approached the jewelry counter.

The suspect then asked to see a necklace, and upon receiving the necklace, left the store with it without paying for it. An investigation is pending.

Obituaries

Maurice Philip Kennedy Maurice Philip Kennedy, of Franklin, Wisc., and formerly of Elmhurst, passed away from cancer on November 27, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents Maurice and Mabel Kennedy. Maury is survived by his son Matthew of Mount Pleasant, Wisc., with his wife Angela and two grandchildren; son Joshua of Centennial, Colo., with his wife Teri and three grandchildren; brother Michael of Minocqua, Wisc., with his wife Marianne and their three sons and families.

Jean Kennedy, his former spouse, has remained a friend and confidante. Maury graduated from York High School, obtained a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University and received a MBA degree in Finance at St. Louis University. A visitation will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1:30 p.m., at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 7255 Grange Avenue, Greendale, Wisc.

A private internment will be in the family plot, alongside his parents, in Oakbrook Terrace at a later date.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Esther (Andersen) Linder.

Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Joan had a passion for learning and held baccalaureate degrees in Biology and English from Central Missouri University and a Master’s in Education from Loyola University. Residing for many years in Elmhurst, Joan was a true Renaissance woman. A well-liked teacher for both English and science, she also brought her passions to the workforce as a realtor, title closer, and sales clerk at Von Maur. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a future date in Colorado Springs. Arrangements provided by family members.

Betty Helen Joens, 84 Betty Helen Joens, nee Buchman, 84, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Betty was born on December 28, 1933 in Elmhurst, the daughter of Henry and Frieda Buchman. She met Alan Joens of Blue Island while attending Elmhurst College and they were married on August 29, 1953.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Alan, who passed away on March 13, 2001, and by both her parents. She was also preceded in death by her older brother Edward, who passed away this past September.

She is survived by her six children: Jeffrey (Ada) Joens of Miami; Thomas (Beth) Joens of Lombard; Kathryn (Thomas) Reich of Forest Park; Robert (Laura) Joens of Roselle; David (Mona Martin) Joens of Springfield; and Karen (Carl) Johnson of Eagle Mountain, Utah. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Barbara Joens, Ellis Joens, Elizabeth (Gabe) Conville, Sarah (Jeff) Wronkiewicz, Matthew Reich, Dakota Joens, Alex Joens, Benjamin Joens and Rachel Johnson. Her sister-in-law, Marilyn Buchman, also survives Esther Joan Swenson, 81 Joan (Linder) Swenson, formerly her, as do her nephews William, Edward, Michael, and Daniel of Elmhurst, died on November Buchman, her niece Linda Bialla, 19, 2018 due to complications of advanced emphysema at the age of her godson Phillip Solomonson, and many, many friends.

Center. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lombard and of the Elmhurst Elks Club. For the past seven years she had been living at Lexington Square in Lombard and her family would like to express its deep gratitude to the wonderful staff who work there and the many great residents who live there.

Betty was loved by all who knew her and made friends

wherever she went. She travelled to Europe several times, the first time being as a child to be baptized in the Buchman family church in Wald, Switzerland. She was most proud of her children and grandchildren and was blessed with their constant visits, phone calls, love and support.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Chapel Hill

Gardens West Funeral Home on Roosevelt Road in Oak Brook Terrace. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with interment to be at Chapel Hill Gardens West.

Carol Germanos, 81 Carol Germanos, nee Maier, a 45-year resident of Elmhurst, passed away on October 17, 2018, at the age of 81. She was the first daughter born in America to Emil and Louise; sister of Richard (Sophia); faithful wife of Edward; patient mother of Paul, Erika (Chris), and Andrea (Danny); proud grandmother of Zachary, Gemma, and Emilia; and walker of Cookie. An active member of The Courts, a regular attendee of St. Peter’s UCC, a weekly volunteer at the Elmhurst Yorkfield Food Pantry, a passionate fan of the Chicago White Sox, a lover of her garden and birds, only a month after being diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer she was lost to us. Though she received exceptional care at Central DuPage Hospital, Carol was blessed to be able to spend her final days at home in her own bed, surrounded by her family. Her memorial service was held at St. Peter’s UCC, on October 20, 2018.

“All good things must come to an end.” Arrangements were provided by the family.

Aldermen reflect on recent elections partisan by their nature. These are the same types of issues that come before the Elmhurst City Council.

As aldermen, each of our personal perspectives may be more reflective of one party or another, but our elections are nonpartisan, and there is a high level of respect and cooperation among us. The party affiliations of county board members are an obstacle we don’t have on city council, but partisanship doesn’t need to be a barrier to establishing relationships, listening to ideas, gathering information, understanding perspectives, and finding common ground.

Cooperation requires compromise, which means that not all outcomes will be completely consistent with our preferences. This is the case for elected officials and their constituents, who inevitably have a wide

Elections often give us a lot to think about. One thought that comes to mind is that the newly elected DuPage County Board has an excellent opportunity to demonstrate bipartisan cooperation.

Among the board’s existing 18 members is one Democrat. When the newly elected members are sworn in, there will be seven Democrats. All members of the new board will be faced with a choice: band together along party lines or value the perspectives of all colleagues and work together to keep DuPage County moving forward.

Daily life for someone living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia can be frustrating, lonely, scary and even depressing but not when that person lives at Artis Senior Living. Each of our residents has their own life story that, unfortunately, now includes a memory impairment. Contrary to what one might think, that diagnosis does not mean their story is over. It is simply a new chapter in which their family grows to include a care team and a larger support system.

As we head into the holiday season, it is necessary to acknowledge that although the celebrations may not be the same as they once were, they can still bring many smiles and happy moments. Happiness is not defined by where the celebrations are held or by the time or day the get together occurs but instead by the joy that is felt by being together and living in the moment.

Dementia forces us to live in the moment with our residents and their families. It also means that sometimes we alter the way we do things so that our loved ones can have successful days. Recently we celebrated Thanksgiving. We invited all of our residents’ loved ones to join us for a true Thanksgiving meal complete with turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans, festive décor and live music.

As an extra special treat, we had a resident’s granddaughter perform a beautiful a capella opera version of “Ava Maria.” The smiles on their faces as well as our residents, families and friends reminds us of the quote by Denis Waitley: “A good life is a collection of happy moments” and that is truly what our celebration was.

York grad Kyle Mattes enjoying stellar season at ISU Becomes highest finisher in Redbird men’s cross country history

Thanks to the athletic department of Illinois State University (ISU), the Independent has been able to keep up with Elmhurst resident and York grad Kyle Mattes, who has been enjoying an outstanding cross-country season at ISU. On Oct. 13, the Independent learned that Kyle, a senior, captured an 8K personal best and moved up the Illinois State record books at the NCAA Pre-Nationals. He led the Redbirds for the entirety of the 8K White Race, making his biggest move during the middle part of the race, passing 73 runners from the 2K mark to the 6K mark. Mattes finished the race just as strong, crossing the finish line in a personal-best 24:18.70 to finish 29th among 232 student-athletes. With the time, Mattes improved to fifth all-time on the Illinois State top-10 list.

Following that performance, Mattes was named Missouri Valley Conference Male Cross Country

Athlete of the Week. Not only was his time the top 8K mark in the Conference so far this season, but it is also the fifth-fastest time in Illinois State Cross Country history. With Mattes leading the Redbird brigade, ISU was able to defeat 10 USTFCCCA regionally-ranked opponents, including Indiana State (No. 10 in the Great Lakes).

Runs to All-Region Honors at NCAA Midwest Regional According to a release received Nov. 9, at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Midwest Regional, Mattes earned All-Region distinction for the second-consecutive year. He led the Illinois State men to a ninth place finish, their highest since the 2001 season.

Competing in his first 10K of the season, Mattes finished eighth with a time of 31:04.60. Having placed seventh at the 2017 NCAA Midwest Regional, he became the first Redbird to earn back-to-back All-Region accolades since 2014.

Qualifies for NCAA XC Championship On Nov. 10, it was learned that Mattes had earned one of the region’s four individual qualifying spots for the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championship. Again, Mattes made history, becoming the first ISU men’s student-athlete to qualify individually for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in back-toback seasons. He is only the second Redbird to qualify for the NCAA Championships twice, joining athlete Tony Daniel who qualified as an individual in 1989 and as part of ISU’s NCAA-qualifying team in 1990.

That made Mattes a two-time NCAA qualifier, two-time All-Midwest Region selection, and fourtime All-MVC performer. He goes down as one of the most decorated cross-country student-athletes in ISU cross-country history.

“Kyle is the definition of a championship racer,” said ISU’s Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jeff Bovee. “He always shows up

when he needs to, and I think he has an even better race in him next week than what we saw from him yesterday.”

Wrapping up the season On Nov. 17, ISU reported that Mattes had closed out a decorated Illinois State cross-country career at the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship by making Redbird cross country history.

He placed 52nd overall with a 10K time of 30:10.30, etching his name in the Illinois State cross-country record book once again. Mattes was the top Missouri Valley Conference finisher at the NCAA Championship. He completed his Illinois State cross-country career as one of the best in program history. He was a two-time NCAA qualifier, two-time All-Region selection, and four-time All-MVC performer.

ICGS begins After School Care After a considerable amount of research by Immaculate Conception Grade School administrators and school board during the 2017-18 school year, it was decided that an After School Care program would be offered for the 2018-19 school year.

The Elmhurst Artists’ Guild (EAG) will host its Winter Members Show in the EAG Gallery at the Elmhurst Art Museum (EAM), 150 S. Cottage Hill Ave., in Elmhurst’s Wilder Park. The show will feature a wide variety of work from EAG members and runs now through Jan. 4, 2019. An opening reception for the artists will take place on Friday, Dec. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Charlene Lee Freislinger, president of EAG, urges the community to support local artists this holiday season.

“There’s a lot of new and exciting work from our members,” she said.

One of the many works that will be displayed is Intersection

by Michael Schmidt. The artist proclaims the piece to be as much a painting as it is a sculpture. It is a small, abstract work that incorporates acrylic paint and constructed wooden blocks. Schmidt says making the piece was more experimental for him than others and hopes to make larger works in the future.

Artist Jennifer Starchvill will be showcasing Get Set Go, an abstracted acrylic painting on canvas from her “Glyph” series. She started this series to “depersonalize” her creations, so she could more comfortably part with them after a sale. However, they remain somewhat personal.

Business brief OSHA accuses Illinois contractor of exposing workers to falls The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited Manuel Gallardo – operator of Palatine-based Gallardo’s Construction Services Inc. – for exposing roofers to fall hazards. OSHA proposed penalties totaling $190,314.

This is the 11th time since 2016 that OSHA has cited this company for fall hazards.

OSHA initiated an inspection after observing hazards at a company construction site in Mokena, Illinois. OSHA cited Gallardo for one willful, two repeated, and two serious violations for failing to protect employees from fall hazards, train employees on fall protection, ensure employees used safety glasses and hard hats, and for allowing employees to use an unsafe ladder.

“Gallardo’s Construction Services knowingly and repeatedly failed to comply with well-known fall protection requirements, and put their employees at risk of serious or fatal injuries,” said OSHA Chicago South Area Office Director Kathy Webb.

levy remains flat for the 11th year in a row at $66.9 million.

The budget includes a $100,000 allocation to continue the fight against heroin in DuPage County. The DuPage County budget takes effect Dec. 1.

Conroy appointed to Pritzker administration’s Healthcare Transition Committee State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) was appointed to Gov.-elect JB Pritzker’s Healthy Children and Families Committee, joining healthcare experts and non-profit leaders to advise and guide the new administration on healthcare policy.

The DuPage County Board approved the 2019 budget on Tuesday, marking the 11th consecutive year the County has passed a budget with no property tax increase. The 2019 budget is $433.8 million, down $5.8 million from the previous fiscal year.

The approved budget includes a fulltime headcount of 2,167, which is down from 2,270 in 2010.

How the University of Illinois wound up in Champaign-Urbana

In those conversations he learned that the postwar Legislature would be occupied with a number of special interests.

Southern Illinois wanted a prison; Peoria and Springfield were fighting over which would be the state capital, and Chicago wanted to deepen the Chicago River and develop a system of parks and boulevards. Such knowledge would be important in future vote-trading.

When the Legislature went into session in January 1867, the Champaign County Committee moved into Springfield’s Leland Hotel, where for the next three months it held the principal reception room and a suite of parlors and bedrooms. The rooms were used to entertain legislators and their constituents with either drinks, light refreshments or sumptuous dinners of oysters or quail. Lawmakers were supplied with cigars and theater tickets. Late in the session, Griggs arranged for a special train to take legislators to Champaign-Urbana.

None of the other communities seeking the university had a similar arrangement.

Inside the House Chambers, Griggs showed his skill by running for speaker.

For two days, the House was tied up in endless voting. On the night after the second day, an intermediary visited Griggs and asked what it would take to get him to drop out of the race. Griggs wanted the chairmanship of the Committee on Agriculture and Mechanic Arts — the committee that would hear all the bills about locating the university — and the right to choose its members.

He got it, dropped out of the race for speaker and thus was able to control the legislation.

As the session progressed, advocates for the other communities, particularly

Jacksonville, wondered why the university location legislation wasn’t being heard in the committee.

Griggs would explain that he had called the committee together but that he couldn’t get a quorum.

Then he’d publically announce another committee meeting but privately tell its members not to show up.

This went on until late in

the session when Griggs was convinced he had the votes.

Finally, on Feb. 20, the legislation — which named Champaign as the site of the university — reached the floor.

An amendment was made to substitute Jacksonville for Champaign. It failed 61-20.

Another motion was made to substitute Normal. It failed 58-26.

A third motion was made to

insert Lincoln for Champaign. It failed 60-21.

Then the legislation naming Champaign was put to a vote and was approved 67-10.

The Senate followed suit Feb. 25.

Three days later, Gov. Richard Oglesby signed the legislation.

Opponents charged that Griggs had bought legislators with a “slush fund.” Jonathan Turner, who had sought the university for Jacksonville, said the Legislature had exhibited “a degree of corruption, hypocrisy, drunkenness and debauchery unparalleled in the history of Illinois.”

The state wasn’t even 50 years old. A much greater history of corruption lay ahead.

ChampaignUrbana owes its prominence to the University of Illinois, and the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign owes its existence to Clark Robinson Griggs.

If it hadn’t been for Griggs — probably the greatest political operator in Champaign County’s history — the U of I or, as it was then known, the Illinois Industrial University, would have been located in Jacksonville, Lincoln, Bloomington or perhaps Chicago.

Yet, there is no Griggs Hall at the university, no statues of Griggs on campus. Even in Urbana, where he served a year as mayor, there is only a four-block-long street that bears his name.

One can only guess why Griggs’ name has been forgotten by all but the history books. Perhaps the university is just a little ashamed of the man who could be called its father.

You see, Griggs was a bit of a scoundrel.

Much of the story of Griggs’ delightfully sly effort comes from an interview he gave to Allan Nevins (who later became known as the father of oral histories) shortly before his death.

Historians have disputed some details of Griggs’ story, but there seems little doubt that he was an operator who would fit well in today’s Statehouse.

Griggs was a Massachusetts native who came to Champaign County in 1859. He purchased land north of Philo on Yankee Ridge, a place so named because of all the New Englanders who settled there.

At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and served as a sutler, a man who sold food and drink to soldiers.

After the war, Griggs was elected to the Illinois House. He had already served two terms in the Massachusetts Legislature and apparently had learned a lot there about political maneuvering.

Griggs went to Springfield a freshman lawmaker who didn’t act like one.

In a 1915 interview shortly before his death, Griggs told Nevins how he helped bring the university to a swampy, sparsely settled community.

It started with $40,000 appropriated by the supervisors of Champaign and Urbana townships and Griggs’ decision to travel most of the state (everywhere but Jacksonville, Lincoln and Bloomington), meet with other state representatives and build support for Champaign-Urbana.

In five weeks, he said, he interviewed 40 House members and gained pledges from 15 of them.

Next, he met with the governor and lieutenant governor and with the chairmen of the state

There are just some actions and experiences you appreciate when you are a grown-up as compared to when you are perhaps not so much of one.

A grown-up appreciates a morning kitchen where the sink and dishwasher are empty, the counter tops free of pizza pans, fry pans or take-out boxes and the floor is clear of crumbs and blueberry smoothie dribbles from the night before.

A not-so-much-of-a-grownup appreciates late night feeding frenzies. Making an omelet or cooking pizza (or better yet ordering one) after all the regular grown-ups have gone to bed. Finishing it all off with a blueberry smoothie. Being responsible and putting the dishes in the sink – rinsing them off can

Pink bedrooms, then and now, are the place where dreams and imagination rule It just occurred to me that I once again have the pink bedroom of my youth. But it’s not my bedroom this time, it’s my office.

My bedroom is a delightful haven I share with my Prince Charming.

We have twinkle lights in the shape of hot air balloons on our headboard and a tiny wind chime hanging on the end of the fan pull. A custom banner hangs over our bed that reads, “Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.” Our bedroom is large and beautiful and magical and not pink.

(That room also holds a kind of magic I didn’t know as a young girl. Wink wink.)

This room that I write from has pink walls, nearly the same color I had in my room growing up. This bedroom was deemed to be our granddaughter’s sleepover room when we moved in because it was already painted pink.

I claimed the dining room for my office and it worked perfectly. I loved it. (The family room is our dining room, the living room is our reading room, and the sun room is our TV room. It all works fabulously.) Now that we’ve been in this house a year, I was ready to shake things up again.

The dining room/office wanted to be a different kind of room now.

With lovely French doors and being directly off the entry foyer, it is perfect for private consults with clients who I now see in our home for life coach

sessions (and Oracle sessions) (and book strategy sessions). The feel and energy of that room is perfect for oneon-ones. And so handy.

My writing office loves being upstairs now and so do I. My view of the backyard is gorgeous. The monstrous evergreens and the big wide sky and the birds and the squirrels romping in the yard equates to heaven for me. And our granddaughter didn’t mind at all that she now has two other guest rooms to pick from.

In addition to the calming view, everything in my line of sight gives me inspiration. And that is the goal of a writing room.

My pink walls are adorned with what makes me happy. No Andy Gibb poster in this room though. I also had a white bean bag chair and hot pink shag carpet in my room of yesteryear that I don’t need to replicate. My accessories now include a lava lamp, a pink and white stuffed unicorn, a pink sparkly castle and carriage on a square canvas, and Patrick Swayze on a pillow. The feeling of this pink room is reminiscent of long ago innocence

I loved spending time in my old bedroom, listening to music, reading, writing, dreaming. That is what I do now. The little girl in me is still a dreamer, alive and well. I like that she’s still with me. She and I listen to music, read, write, and dream. That girl has imagination and believes in possibilities.

The pink walls are bringing her out.

Maybe it’s the way the light is hitting the walls or maybe it’s my mood, but I’m transported to another time and space, another pink room, where I wrote stories in my head and knew I would travel the world. So many amazing dreams have come true, many of which I didn’t even know I had. And now I know that

even more are just around the corner.

Thanks, pink room, then and now.

I like the feel of you. We do just fine together. The past, and the future, looks pretty in pink.

Timothy Christian boys basketball team opens conference play Trojans went 3-1 at Lisle tournament; Harris, Baldridge break 20-point barrier there

The Timothy Christian boys basketball team opened Metro Suburban Conference Red Division action with a 47-44 loss to Ridgewood at home.

Ridgewood led 16-13 after the first quarter, but Timothy came back to take a 24-22 lead at halftime. Timothy held a 33-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Ridgewood outscored the Trojans 16-11 in the fourth.

Jack Baldridge led the Trojans with 10 points. Matt Owens had eight points, including two 3-pointers. AJ Voss had eight points and three steals, while Justin Baez had six points and five assists and shot 4-for-6 from the free-throw line. Danardo Jones had six rebounds and Josh Harris added four steals. Timothy shot 40 percent from the field (17-for-42).

Earlier in the week, the Trojans dropped a 62-25 non-conference game to Benet Academy, a Class 4A school.

Benet led 15-7 after the first quarter and 32-16 at halftime. Benet outscored Timothy 21-7 in the third quarter and 9-2 in the fourth.

Baldridge led the Trojans with eight points and hit two 3-pointers.

Owens also had eight points. Harris had four rebounds, while Chris Brooks had two assists. The Trojans shot 8-for-43 from the field.

Timothy kicked off the season at the Lisle tournament. In its final game, the Trojans downed host Lisle 63-47 to finish 3-1.

Lisle led 9-6 after the first quarter and 24-19 at halftime. Timothy turned it on in the second half, outscoring Lisle 17-4 in the third quarter and 27-19 in the fourth.

Harris led the way with 23 points.

He hit 7 of 7 free throws and also had five steals. Owens finished with 12 points. He hit 10 free throws and had seven assists and three steals. Zach Orange hit two 3-pointers, while Jones had seven rebounds and Voss finished with six rebounds.

In a 69-59 win over Yorkville Christian, the Trojans trailed 2218 after the first quarter and 4335 at halftime. Timothy outscored Yorkville 15-4 in the third and 1912 in the fourth quarter to earn the come-from-behind win.

Harris had 20 points and seven rebounds. He made two 3-pointers.

Jones registered a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Owens finished with 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Baldridge had 10 points, giving Timothy four

players in double figures in scoring.

In a 59-56 loss to Westmont at Lisle, Timothy trailed 19-10 after the first quarter and 31-25 at halftime. Timothy came back thanks to a strong 15-9 third quarter and tied the game at 40-40, but Westmont outscored the Trojans 19-16 in the fourth quarter.

Baldridge led Timothy with 22 points and connected on 6 of 7 three-

point attempts. Harris had 14 points and five rebounds and also made two 3s. Jones had eight points, while Owens had five assists and Baez had two steals.

Timothy opened the tournament with a 68-62 win against Evergreen Park. Timothy led 20-15 after the first quarter and 35-28 at halftime.

Voss led the Trojans with 18 points and 11 rebounds, the team’s first individual double-double of the season. Baez had 14 points and seven

York girls bowling team off to fine start Dukes fourth at Plainfield Central; Defeat Downers North in conference opener

The York girls bowling team kicked its season off with success at the Plainfield Central Invitational and in its West Suburban Conference opener against Downers Grove North.

At Plainfield Central, York placed fourth out of 22 teams with a score of 5,157. The Dukes rolled 869, 852 and 897 before the lunch break and went 886, 866 and 787 to close it out.

Senior Krystyna Panek finished seventh overall with an 1,152 series. Sophomore Holly Santucci was 24th with a 1,070, while junior Rose Klinger was 32nd with a 1,020. Senior Ruby Noel placed 47th with a 979 series. Lauren Rickenbrode finished 59th with a 936 series.

Panek had high games of 217, 203, 200, 193 and 178. Santucci had high scores of 209, 191 and 187. Klinger

had a 192 high game before the lunch recess and then caught fire in the final three games, rolling a 570 series with 207, 201 and 162 marks. Noel had a 549 series in her first three games with 170, 181 and 198 efforts.

Rickenbrode had high games of 193 and 175.

York opened West Suburban Conference play with a 2,862-2,207 win over Downers Grove North. York had games of 979, 916 and 967.

Santucci led the way with a 571 series with games of 182, 204 and 185. Panek had a 512 series with high games of 171 and 183. Noel had a 497 with a 177 high game. Klinger was at 486 with a high game of 165 and Rickenbrode had a 452 with a 165 high game.

The Dukes also took the JV contest by a 2,211-1668 count over Downers North. Abbie Romanowski had a 150 high game for York.

York is coming off a 2017-2018 season where it tied for second in the WSC. Panek (173 average last year),

Dukes also won Palatine Molitor tournament

Coming off a first-place showing at the Palatine Ed Molitor tournament over the Thanksgiving break, the York boys basketball team was looking to keep that momentum going in its West Suburban Conference Silver Division opener at Lyons Township.

Mission accomplished.

The Dukes went to Lyons and walked away with a 60-56 WSC Silver win.

The game was deadlocked at 1616 after the first quarter and York used a 22-13 second quarter to pull away at 38-29 at halftime. However, Lyons outscored York 15-10 in the third quarter to pull closer and the two teams each scored 12 points in the fourth.

Nick Kosich led the Dukes with 18 points and five rebounds. Sam Walsh finished with 16 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Erik Cohn added 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Nate Shockey had seven points and five assists. John Milling finished with three assists.

York shot 51.1 percent from the field on 23 of 45 shooting and forced Lyons Township into 20 turnovers in improving to 5-1 on the season.

“We had a good Thanksgiving tournament and a good conference road win,” said York coach Vince Doran. “We shot really well against LT and our defense created a lot of offense. We turned them over 20 times, which is great. When you do that, it presents a lot of opportunities on the offensive end.”

Doran credited Walsh’s presence in the post with helping York in other facets of its game on offense. “Sam Walsh had a strong performance in-

side for us with his toughness and his ability to post up,” he said. “That presented a lot of opportunities for our perimeters. It opened up a lot for us offensively because he was getting double-teamed.”

Doran loved the fact York was able to go on the road in the tough WSC Silver and come out with a win. “It’s always tough to win on the road in our conference,” he said.

“Lyons has a lot of kids back and they are similar to us. It was a nice way to start the first week of conference play.”

Doran also is seeing plenty of development on the defensive end.

“Our defense is getting better,” he said. “We’ve been consistent, but we’re always looking to improve.

Lyons is a hard team to turnover and to get 20 off them shows our kids are doing things well. Hopefully we will continue to move in that direction.”

York played a non-conference game at Benet Academy Tuesday and will host Glenbard West in a WSC Silver game Saturday. “Both of those teams have no losses,” Doran pointed out late last week. “It’s a good stretch of games that will be good tests for us.”

In earlier action at Palatine, York opened the tournament with a 7262 win over Maine West. York led 25-12 after one quarter and 31-30 at halftime. The Dukes outscored Maine West 25-11 in the third quarter.

Shockey led the Dukes with 23 points. He shot 8 of 9 from 2-point range and 2-for-5 from the 3-point line, while also draining 10 of 11 foul shots. He added five steals and four assists. Walsh had 18 points, while Cohn had 17 points and Kosich had eight points, four assists and four steals.

York forced Maine West into 26 turnovers in the game.

In a 46-29 win over Algonquin

Jacobs, York led 9-5 after the first quarter and 20-13 at halftime. York outscored Jacobs 15-9 in the third and 11-7 in the fourth.

Cohn had 16 points (three 3-pointers) to go with four rebounds, seven steals and four assists. Walsh had 13 points and six rebounds, while Kosich had nine points on three 3-pointers. Jeff Grace had four steals. Jacobs turned the ball over 21 times in the game.

In a 58-47 loss to Stevenson at Palatine, York trailed 13-10 after the first quarter and 25-22 at halftime.

Stevenson outscored York 15-14 in the third, but ramped it up to 18-11 in the fourth quarter.

Walsh had 12 points and five rebounds, while Kosich also had 12 points to go with four assists. Cohn had nine points and Shockey finished with eight points and three steals.

In a 54-38 win over Hersey to wrap up the tournament, York led 15-6 after the first quarter and 28-18 at halftime. York outscored Hersey 19-15 in the third quarter.

Cohn had 17 points and four rebounds, while Kosich had 16 points and three steals. Tim Glavan had four rebounds and Milling had four steals. York forced Hersey into 17 turnovers.

Cohn was named the tournament MVP with Walsh earning all-tournament accolades.

Through five games, Cohn was leading the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game. Walsh was at 13.0 points, while Kosich was at 12.6 and Shockey was at 8.2 points per contest.

York was shooting 48.6 percent from the field through five games.

Cohn was the team leader in 3-pointers made with 12, while Kosich had nine 3s.

York forced its first five opponents into 93 turnovers, while only turning the ball over 59 times itself.

Young IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team making strides Knights recently defeated Wheaton St. Francis in conference play

By Mike Miazga, CORRESPONDENT In terms of veteran experience, the IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team does not have a ton of that commodity.

Coach Kelsey James noted the Knights have two returning seniors, a returning junior and a sophomore.

“Everybody else is new to the team,” she said. “We are very young.”

But youth hasn’t prevented the Knights from improving. Through late last week, IC Catholic Prep was 3-4 overall and 1-1 in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division action.

IC Catholic Prep has wins against Lemont, Midlothian Bremen and St. Francis and has lost to Lisle, Chicago Resurrection, Joliet Catholic and Elgin St. Edward.

The Knights lost by three points to Lisle to open the season and dropped a two-point game to St. Edward and a nine-point contest to JCA. “We are playing team basketball really well,” said James. “We’re playing at least eight or nine girls a game. We’ve had several games where at least seven players have scored. We’re playing more of a team game and having less of players standing out on their own.”

Thus far, IC Catholic Prep has enjoyed success with a fast-paced offense. “We are running the ball really well overall and we’re getting a lot of fast-break points,” said James. “We also have good shooters. We’re looking more for an outside-inside game this year.

The Knights employ full-court pressure on defense. “We’re looking to turn teams over,” said James.

The most an opponent has scored on IC Catholic Prep is 59 points this season, James noted. “Most teams we’re holding to around 40 points a game,” said James.

An early-season key for the Knights has been freshman Claire Wagner. “She’s been a nice surprise for us,” said James. “She has been playing very well and she’s been playing in the starting lineup right off the bat. In her first game, she had 21 points and nine rebounds.”

Returning senior captain Jaida Smith also has been a key performer. “Jaida is doing a good job of leading the team and controlling the pace of the game and keeping everybody on the same page,” said James.

Through seven games, James likes what she sees. “I’m very happy, so far,” she said. “A lot of our losses have been very close. We don’t have a lot of experience. I thought our game with St. Francis (win) was a step in the right direction. We were able to pull it out as a team. We used the experience from the other losses.”

The Knights played Aurora Central Catholic earlier this week.

Chalk up two more wins for the fast-starting York girls basketball team.

The Dukes scored recent victories over Willowbrook and Hinsdale Central on the road to bump their overall record up to 7-1 to start the season.

York’s win at Hinsdale pushed it to 2-0 on the young West Suburban Conference Silver Division season.

York headed up St. Charles Road and down Ardmore Ave. to face Willowbrook where it came away with a 50-40 win in its first away contest of the season. Dukes coach Brandon Collings noted Willowbrook had recently come off a key WSC Gold win against perennial division power Proviso East.

“Willowbrook gave Proviso East its first conference loss in a while,” Collings said.

Willowbrook led by 19 points with

three minutes left in the third quarter. “They hit a shot at the buzzer and gained some confidence going into the fourth,” said Collings. “We had a tough time finishing around the basket in the first half.”

Carley Schwartz scored 11 of York’s 19 first-half points (York went for 31 points in the second half).

“She bailed us out with three 3s in the first half,” said Collings.

Schwartz continued her hot shooting ways in the road win at Hinsdale Central. There, she buried seven 3s and finished with 21 points.

“She’s on fire,” said Collings.

“Hinsdale Central sat in a zone and left her out there.”

Levins added six points in the win against Hinsdale Central where York led 44-19 after three quarters.

Collngs noted Hinsdale was limited to quarter scores of 7, 7, 5 and 3.

“We came out and had a nice third quarter,” the coach said. “We had the third quarter won at 16-2, but they hit a shot from past half court at the buzzer.”

Sydney Molis added seven points.

York had eight players score in the

game.

In the Willowbrook game, Sara Krissinger had 16 points to lead the way, including a 10-for-14 effort from the free-throw line. Krissinger scored 14 points in the second half.

Looking at the squad’s first eight games, Collings noted his team has played strong defense. “We defend well,” he said. “Our half-court defense has kept us in games.”

Collings also has seen the team’s shooting percentage spike. “We are a better shooting team this year,” he said.

But the coach would like to see this year’s group cut down on turnovers. “We’re still turning the ball over too much,” he said.

York also has been aided by balanced scoring. “Sarah Krissinger is our leading scorer and then it’s Kathleen Levins,” Collings pointed out.

“After that, anybody we put in there can put up 8-10 points. We have a lot of contributors, which is nice. One of the best things I am seeing is we are spreading the ball around.”

York is averaging around 13 assists a contest. “That’s a pretty good number for a girls’ high-school basketball team,” Collings said.

York’s only loss this season was in overtime to Downers Grove South during the Thanksgiving holiday.

“We lost to Downers Grove South when we were 14 of 28 from the free-throw line,” said Collings.

“We had two chances to win the game from the free-throw line. I think every game we’ve played we’ve gotten better at an area where we needed to improve. We’re a young team that is getting better.

But we’re still looking to take care

of the ball better each game. That’s a big thing for us going forward.

We’re making too many unforced turnovers.”

York played Oak Park-River Forest in a conference game earlier in the week.

The Dukes play Lyons Township in another WSC Silver game Saturday.

After that, it’s games against Glenbard West, Benet Academy, Bolingbrook and Naperville North.

The IC Catholic Prep boys bowling team hosted its annual Knight Invite this past weekend at Brunswick Zone in Glendale Heights.

New coach Jeff Fredrickson noted the team will be led this year by senior captain Demetri Daviantis.

Other returning veteran bowlers who should contribute for the Knights this season include seniors Emmeet Pollitz and Pete Sykora, along with juniors Jack O’Brien and Ian Rickert.

Others seeing action include: juniors Brenna

Doxey, Liam Reilly and Louis Narcisi, along with sophomores Liam Darce and Thomas Mandra.

The Knights faced Hinsdale Central earlier this week on the road and will return to action on Dec. 13 against Hinsdale South at Brunswick Zone in Woodridge.

The loss put IC Catholic Prep at 3-2 overall on the season.

Juniors Caroline Collins and Khloe Lesus also are new to the varsity team.

“We also have 17 new members of the bowling team this year for our JV and JVII levels,” said Turnbull.

“This is our largest group ever. They have learned so much already just two weeks into the season and have really bright futures ahead of them on the bowling team.”

Turnbull reports the team’s mental strength is the best it has ever been.
