Shooting at Oakbrook Center leaves four injured State’s attorney issues call for witnesses as one suspect remains at large

At about 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 23, shoppers at Oakbrook Center in Oak Brook were interrupted and sent fleeing after gunshots were fired between two subjects.

One of the suspected gunmen was injured as well as three other people who were not connected with the suspects. The wounded gunman was taken into custody right away, but as of press time, the second suspect re-

mained at large.

Oak Brook Police Chief James Kruger told news outlets that three women had been shot in the incident but all were expected to survive, according to news reports from several sources including the Chicago Tribune, the Daily Herald and on all major television networks.

About 100 officers from various municipalities reportedly descended on the mall to help calm the situation and track down the second suspect.

One witness over the radio said there was a “sea of police cars.”

Inside the mall area, which is outdoors, people ran for safety. The mall was placed on lockdown and SWAT and tactical teams searched every store in the center, eventually completing a search of the entire mall, turning it back to mall management at about 11:55 p.m.

for safety, Kruger said.

Witnesses reported hearing 15 total gunshots. Kruger said two pistols were recovered including a 9mm handgun.

In a press conference last Thursday, Kruger said the two suspects shooting at one another were familiar with each other. The other victims were injured by ricochet gunfire from the two shooters. Kruger reported that two of the injured women in their 40s and had received gunshot wounds in

their thighs, while another woman in her 20s was shot in the foot. He also reported that a woman in her 20s had injured her ankle while trying to flee the area. The gunshot victims were treated at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

The wounded suspect who was taken into custody at the scene underwent surgery to treat four gunshot wounds to his back, calf and thighs,

DAR chapter observes Wreaths Across America Day Ceremony held at Elmhurst’s Vietnam War Memorial

The Martha Ibbetson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), conducted a wreath-laying ceremony to remember Elmhurst’s casualties of the Vietnam War on Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, Dec. 18 at the Vietnam Memorial in Wilder Park.

Wreaths Across America Day is observed throughout the country to ensure the service of military veterans and casualties continue to be remembered.

The 14 young men honored on the Wilder Park Vietnam Memorial lost their lives between 1966 and 1970 and ranged in age from 20 to 26. They include: Jack A. Schneider, Thomas J. Leston, Steve J. Churchill, Larry R. Palmer, John H. Curtin, James T. Cummings Jr., David R. Burkes Jr., Lawrence C. Rose, Steven R. Major, Kenneth E. Steinhebel, David E. Schulze, Frank L. Kobor, Richard D. Krupa, and John V. Francis.

The shopping center reopened Friday, Dec. 24 with increased police presence.

At press time, the second suspect was still at large. Anyone who witnessed the shooting or attempted to alert police officers or security guards about the suspects as they fled is asked to email authorities at PoliceTipLine@oak-brook.org.

On Saturday, Dec. 25, DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin’s office issued a call for witnesses. The suspect is described as a black man with long, dark dreadlocks, a medium build and height, in his 30s. He was wearing a blue jacket at the time of the incident. Anyone who has seen the man or has any information is asked to call 630-368-8746.

Charges may be forthcoming but at press time, no names were released and no charges were announced.

The suspect was released pending charges for possession of a controlled substance.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

The victim reviewed her security video which showed a suspect described as a white male walking up the victim’s driveway, picking up both packages, and leaving the property on foot.

Bond set at $500,000 for West Chicago man accused of suffocating mother with a pillow DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and West Chicago Chief of Police Colin Fleury have announced that bond has been set for a West Chicago man charged with attempting to suffocate his mother to death with a pillow while she slept. Bryan Jones, 39, Bryan Jones appeared at a bond hearing in front of Judge Michael Reidy, who set bond at $500,000 with 10 percent to apply.

Jones has been charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder (Class X felony), one count of aggravated domestic battery (Class 2 felony) and one count of aggravated battery (Class 3 felony).

On Dec. 22, officers with the West Chicago Police Department responded to a medical assistance call on Arbor Avenue. Upon their arrival, officers found Jones and his mother at the residence.

It is alleged that at approximately 3:22 a.m., Jones entered his mother’s bedroom while she was sleeping, placed a large pillow over her face and held it there. The victim was able to free herself and called police. Jones was taken into custody at this time.

“The allegations against Mr. Jones are very disturbing,” Berlin said. “We are all grateful that the victim in this case was able to free herself and contact authorities before it was too late.”

Jones’ next court appearance is scheduled Jan. 6 for arraignment in front of Judge Reidy.

On Monday, Dec. 20, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Carol Stream Chief of Police William Holmer announced that bond had been set for a Carol Stream man accused of firing several times into a Carol Stream residence. Jimmy Calan, 18, appeared before Judge Brian Telander who set bond at $250,000 with 10% to apply. Calan has been charged with one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony) and one count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 4 Felony).

Also charged in the incident is an Aurora juvenile. The juvenile appeared at a detention hearing this morning where Judge Anthony Coco order he be held until at least his next court appearance which was scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 29.

He has been charged with one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony), one count of Possession of a Stolen Firearm (Class 2 Felony) and one count of Possession of a Firearm, Under 18 Years of Age (Class 4 Felony).

On Sunday, Dec. 19, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Carol Stream police officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 600 block of Willow Wood. Upon their arrival, officers observed the window of the sliding glass door severely cracked and two gun-shot holes in the ceiling. Officers also found 11 shell casings in the north parking lot of the apartment complex. It

is alleged that Calan and a 16-year-old juvenile went to the residence and once there, threw a rock at the sliding glass door.

It is alleged that when an occupant of the residence opened the sliding glass door to see the cause of the disturbance, Calan and the juvenile opened fire. It is further alleged that after the shooting, Calan and the juvenile fled the scene.

Through the course of their investigation, authorities identified Calan and the juvenile as suspects in the shooting. A short time later, both suspects were located in Glendale Heights. It is alleged that when the juvenile was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit, officers located a 9 mm handgun approximately two feet away from him.

“The type of violent, irresponsible behavior alleged against Mr. Calan will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force and effect of the law,” Berlin said.

“Thankfully, no one in the residence was injured as a result of this alleged behavior. I commend the Carol Stream Police Department for their outstanding work in the quick identification and apprehension of Mr. Calan and his alleged accomplice.”

Calan’s next court appearance is scheduled for arraignment on Jan. 13, in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendants’ guilt.

Woman sentenced to 10 years for pouring boiling Bond set for man charged with shooting at Carol Stream residence water on sleeping boyfriend DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin has announced that a Roselle woman accused of pouring boiling water on her boyfriend as he slept on the couch has been sentenced to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Alexis Sykes, 23, ap- Alexis Sykes peared in court in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh, who handed down the sentence.

Following the incident, Sykes went missing.

On Jan. 8, a $250,000 arrest warrant was issued for Sykes. She was located in Okitbbeha County, Miss., on Jan. 19 and extradited back to DuPage County to face the charges against her. On Feb. 2, she appeared in bond court where bond was set at $500,000 with 10 percent to apply. She has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time. Sykes entered an agreed plea to one count of aggravated battery by caustic substance, a Class X felony.

This sentencing is the result of allegations that in the early morning hours of Jan. 2, Sykes poured a pot of boiling water on her boyfriend while he slept on the couch in the apartment they shared in Roselle.

An investigation into the matter found that Sykes recorded herself committing this act and posted the video to Snapchat with the following caption, “I kinda feel bad now because he got second- and third-degree burns from face to waist and they rushin him to burn center but oh well (shrugging shoulder emoji) BITCH (emoji blowing kiss) n still cried and beg me to drive him to hospital.”

The investigation also found that after dousing her victim with the boiling water, Sykes hid the victim’s car keys from him as the victim described watching his skin fall off his arms. The victim was finally able to get his keys and drove himself to a local hospital where shortly thereafter, he was transported to Loyola University Medical Center Burn Unit where he spent nearly two weeks and underwent skin graft surgery to treat his burns.

“The cruelty displayed by Ms. Sykes as she doused her sleeping boyfriend with a pot of boiling water is extremely disturbing,” Berlin said. “Considering her complete disregard for the amount of pain and suffering she caused her victim, one can only come to the conclusion that she has most certainly earned every year of her 10-year sentence.”

Sykes will be required to serve 85 percent of her sentence before being eligible for parole.

The DuPage County Health Department is raising awareness of rising cases and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in DuPage County and recommending that residents take action to limit the spread of COVID-19 during the holidays to protect their friends and family and to protect limited healthcare resources.

COVID-19 activity remains at very high levels in DuPage County and continues to rise with over 642 new cases being reported on average each day and 233 individuals hospitalized in the six hospitals in the county as of Dec. 20.

The 7-day rolling average of new cases reported each day and the number of hospitalizations has approximately doubled since Thanksgiving. Vaccination is crucial to protect yourself from serious illness or death, to reduce transmission of COVID-19, and to prevent the emergence of new variants.

Over 95 percent of all hospitalized and/or deceased COVID-19 cases since Dec. 15, 2020, in DuPage County occurred in persons not fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

While being fully vaccinated currently means receiving at least 2 doses of Pfizer or Moderna or 1 dose of Johnson and Johnson, studies show after getting vaccinated against COVID-19, protection against the virus and the ability to prevent infection with variants may decrease over time.

Everyone over the age of 16 years old should receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster as soon as they are eligible to ensure improved protection against getting infected with COVID-19 or developing severe illness or death as a result of infection.

COVID-19 vaccines are widely available throughout DuPage County for all residents 5 years or older. Teens aged 16-17 can get a Pfizer-BioNTech booster shot and everyone 18 years or older should get a booster shot.

A call for elected officials to help restore civility to Congress

By Ray LaHood Recently, statehouse Democrats and Gov. JB Pritzker enacted a new map defining the boundaries of central Illinois congressional districts for the next 10 years. Three districts cover territory within a 35-mile radius of Peoria: the 15th, 16th, and 17th.

It was my privilege to represent large parts of this same area (then the 18th district) in the House of Representatives more than a decade ago. I have always thought that central Illinois is a special place when it comes to public service. Let me explain.

Slices of life Quite often, each morning before getting dressed I check my weather app to get the prediction for the upcoming day. Yesterday I caught myself hoping the sun would be shining and the skies blue.

Then it dawned on me. There wasn’t a question whether the sun would be shining. Likewise for the blueness of the skies. Both were an undeniable “yes.”

In that moment, I realized something obvious and important:

It’s useful to recall them amid today’s polarized and vexing politics as we consider who we want to represent us in these new districts: Suppose that for a single month we made a diligent effort to make certain that in our disagreement we would never be captious; that in our differences on principle we would never show petulance; that in resolutely following our own abiding convictions on matters of fundamental policy they would never be tainted by acrimony. Suppose we made a diligent effort to exemplify … humility and meekness and forbearance, … what a great moral force it would become in softening the dissidences of life and clarifying

fundamental viewpoints. All this would redound so richly to the welfare of the world and of our own country.

Words to live by.

My predecessor in the House, Robert H. Michel, represented central Illinois for nearly 40 years.

He was my mentor. His storehouse of political wisdom knew no bounds.

“You know that raising the level of your voice doesn’t raise the level of discussion,” he would remind his colleagues. “You know that listening with care is better than talking in sound bites and thinking in slogans.

You know that peaks of uncommon progress can be reached by paths of common courtesy.”

Bob believed that a public servant could be serious without being somber, tough without being mean, shrewd without being devious,

witty without being malicious.

“It has always puzzled me that in Washington we have no public vocabulary to describe civility, which I believe is among the highest public virtues,” Bob once said. “To be called ‘hard-nosed’ or a ‘gut-fighter’ or an ‘arm-twister’ is in some circles the highest of praise. But civility has no similar public vocabulary.”

Bob taught us by his example that the House floor should be a forum for reasoned debate among colleagues equal in dignity. He came to the House every day to do the work of the people—not to engage in ideological melodramas or political vendettas.

I decided not to run for reelection to my seat in the House of Representatives in 2008. I had spent 14 years there cultivating a civil, bipartisan approach to politics and

the sun always shines. The sky is always blue. Every day, without a doubt, 365 days a year. Each day of my life—since the beginning

of Mother Earth actually—the sun has shone and the skies have been blue. They don’t change. They haven’t changed. Not ever. They are steadfast and true. I guarantee it.

The universe guarantees it.

Thing is, though, I haven’t always looked up to blue skies and sunshine, even though they were both there.

I’m guessing you might feel the same way.

Here’s the truth that’s been right

in front of our eyes the whole time: the sun and the sky don’t change.

Our perception does. Our awareness does.

The sky is the sky. The sun is the sun. There is no changing either one of them. When we look up, they are the default. Thing is, sometimes clouds get in the way, or at least we allow clouds to get in the way.

I look up at the sky and see clouds and think the sun and the blue sky have disappeared, but they haven’t. They are still there, in the same spot they were a day ago, a hundred years ago and a millennium ago.

I deem them gone because of the clouds, but the clouds aren’t real.

They are but vapors. If I reached my hand out it would go right through the clouds. They block my view, but they provide no physical barrier. In that regard, they are an illusion.

Yet I look up and believe the sun and the blue sky are gone. I am unaware of the default. I forget it.

How about that as a metaphor for life?

Life is filled with obstacles.

With worries. With car repairs and mortgage payments (if we are lucky). It’s easy to see the clouds because they are ominous. They are lurking. They threaten lightening and thunder. They want to rain on our parade.

And, in our preoccupation with the clouds, we forget one critical factor. We forget the default.

If sunshine and blue skies are the default for Mother Earth, why wouldn’t that be the same every day in all of our lives? What if goodness,

problem-solving, but with scant success. The highlight was a series of four bipartisan civility retreats I had helped to organize over the course of a decade. Regrettably these retreats could not overcome the enormous challenges posed by the partisan forces in the House. Sad to say, those forces have grown only stronger since then.

Our challenge today calls for leaders who will campaign and govern in the style of Everett Dirksen and Bob Michel. I hope those leaders come from the new 15th, 16th, and 17th congressional districts of Illinois.

not hardship, is the default? What if our own hardships, however difficult they seem, are nothing more than clouds, immaterial, insubstantial experiences in our lives set there to challenge us and make us better?

What if we could blow them away with a breath of wind, or simply a breath?

I don’t mean to make light of anyone’s life hardships. I’m living my own out right now and trying desperately to find my own blue sky, but it is there. Even on the bleakest, darkest, cloudiest days – the sun is shining behind the clouds. The sky is blue.

Sometimes I just can’t see it.

But it is the default.

I believe the same can be said for this big blue planet we live on.

Goodness, peace, compassion and serenity are the defaults. It doesn’t seem that way sometimes, especially right now, but goodness exists. It may be in the background, but it hasn’t left us. It hasn’t disappeared.

It is the default, no matter how many clouds darken the sky.

Infinite and unconditional love, peace and harmony are still here.

Unyielding. Unchanged.

The default is waiting for us to see beyond the clouds. Waiting for us to see what really is. Waiting for us to see the infinite reservoir of goodness that is ours for the taking.

Go ahead, dig in. Ladle yourself a healthy helping.

Conroy calls for immediate filing of Nursing Home Rate Reform Bill Holds association spokeman’s feet to the fire at hearing State Rep. Deb Conroy co-chaired a joint subject matter hearing regarding nursing home rate reform on Tuesday, Dec. 14. The meeting brought together members of several House committees to hear from key stakeholders on the issue. This was the eighth hearing in a series that began in April of this year.

The testimony of an Illinois nursing home resident Mark Cooper only confirmed that current standards are

not acceptable. Cooper spoke of the unsanitary and disgusting conditions that residents have to endure at his nursing home, as well as of the poor quality of care that staffers provide.

According to Mr. Cooper, excrement is left to fester in shower rooms for hours, carpets are stained and sticky with unknown liquids, and even the community TV has been broken for months.

“Patients are just not treated with

dignity,” Cooper said.

While the Health Care Council of Illinois (HCCI) claimed that some of the provisions in the proposed reform package would negatively impact providers, Rep. Conroy pointed to the recent sale of several dozen nursing homes as an indicator of the health of the industry.

“We keep hearing that there isn’t enough money,” Conroy said to HCCI’s spokesman Matt Pickering.

“Forty-six nursing homes were purchased in 2021...do you know how many were purchased by members of your association?”

“No,” Pickering replied.

“At least half,” Conroy asserted.

Rep. Conroy called on members of the General Assembly to support an immediate filing of a previously agreed-upon bill that would implement much-needed nursing home rate reform. This will allow associa-

tions to then file amendments to the language, providing a transparent process for legislatures.

“If we put patient care over profit, we will do the right thing,” Conroy said.

Cullerton supported measure expands collective bargaining eligibility for firefighters Following an administrative decision by the Illinois Labor Relations Board, State Senator Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park) helped pass the law signed Friday, Dec. 17 to help some firefighters secure additional collective bargaining rights.

“Firefighter units are not one-sizefits-all from municipality to municipality,” said Cullerton. “It’s important that each unit has the capability to allow for all who are eligible to have the option to embrace their right to collectively bargain, and that’s just what this new law will do.”

House Bill 220, which was signed

by Gov. JB Pritzker Friday, Dec. 17, establishes a definition for a company officer regarding firefighters. Previously, this term, which is not used by all fire departments, was not defined, leading to confusion when it came to which rank of firefighters was eligible for certain labor relation rights.

Under the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act, any ranks considered supervisory positions are excluded from collective bargaining rights.

The new law allows departments with the rank of company officer to allow those in that rank to be included in collective bargaining rights, as

they do not fall into the category of supervisor under the IPLRA. Chuck Sullivan, president of the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois (AFFI) offered a comment.

“The AFFI thanks Senator Tom Cullerton and Rep. Larry Walsh for once again leading the way on an issue important to labor,” he said.

“Specifically, HB 220 will provide a better opportunity for certain workers in the fire service to be recognized and have the ability to collectively bargain a contract. Their efforts and Governor Pritzker’s signature are truly appreciated.”

DUI and illegal transportation of alcohol near Third and Larch at 3:11 a.m. Police said Goodman admitted to being in possession of a firearm without a valid conceal-and-carry license.

Driver stopped for street racing allegedly found with gun, cannabis On Saturday, Dec. 18, Edwin O. Heredia, 22, of Northlake, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, street racing, possession of cannabis by a driver and improper window tinting subsequent to a traffic stop near York and I-290 at 1:04 a.m. Police said Heredia admitted to being in possession of a loaded handgun and possessed a valid FOID card, but did not possess a valid conceal-and-carry license.

The victim reported Medardo Esparza, 22, and Marisol Esparza, 24, both of Posen, entered an apartment and started a fight, according to police.

Addison 10U Cowboys win two championships

The 10U Addison Cowboys pictured here recently won the Pop Warner State Championship by defeating the Elmhurst Bears to advance to play in the Mid America Regional Championship held in Chesterton, Ind. On Nov. 28, the team also won the Pop Warner Mid America Championship by a convincing margin of 39-6 over the Indiana State Champion Southlake Red Devils.

Addison Trail seniors Maria Martinez (left) and Cindy Nakhammouane were selected to participate in the 2022 Illinois High School Theatre Festival (IHSTF) All-State production of “Cabaret.” Cindy will be part of the crew, while Maria will play tenor saxophone and clarinet in the band. The IHSTF All-State cast, crew and pit orchestra are comprised of top student performers, technicians and musicians from throughout Illinois.

Performances will take place on Thursday and Friday, Jan. 7 and 8, at Illinois State University. The event is for participants of the IHSTF and is not open to the public.

Kilgast also has been making good progress, Tyrrell noted. “Kal is another guy doing well,” he said.

“He’s a junior and we have been very encouraged with his play and his basketball IQ. He’s another guy who is very versatile for us. He gives us positive output on both sides of the floor.

He’s getting more confident offensively and defensively. He’s looking to knock down shots and he’s being more aggressive going to the hoop.”

Tyrrell said team chemistry has been another plus during the first part of the season. “We have good senior leadership and we have some very motivated younger players,” he said.

“We’re very optimistic here. We are having a lot of fun.”

The Knights are in the midst of their own co-hosted IC Catholic Prep/Westmont holiday tournament.

IC Catholic Prep headed into the tournament with a 5-4 record.

Tyrrell was impressed with the way Wassman played against Timothy. “Augie had a very nice game against Timothy,” the coach said.

“He did some really good things for us. He’s been our defense stopper. He put in a lot of work in the offseason and put on a lot of muscle mass and strength. He’s our vocal leader. Not only did a good job scoring and finishing for us, but also gave us a lot of minutes. He plays very hard and is critical to what we do with his defensive intensity.”

Gallagher, Johnson, Hilgart and Richardson have also drawn high praise. “Jack Gallagher is a sophomore who is shooting well,” Tyrrell noted. “He had a good game against St. Edward. He’s a tough-nosed kid.

I am happy to see his progression.

Liam Johnson has been doing a lot of good things defensively and brings a lot of energy. John Hilgart has been our go-to guy. He’s very consistent and is somebody we count on. We are happy Antonio Richardson is back from an injury from football.

The IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team reached the championship game of the Burbank Reavis tournament.

But the Knights will have to wait to play for that championship until sometime in January.

IC Catholic Prep coach Todd Fisher explained the tournament had to do some reshuffling with teams due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols. The bottom line is both IC Catholic Prep and host Reavis are 2-0 in the tournament and will find a date, likely in January at some point Fisher noted, to play for the title.

The Knights opened tournament play with a 45-22 win over Midlothian Bremen. Claire Wagner led IC Catholic Prep with 24 points.

The Knights then recorded a 41-1 win over Chicago Solorio Academy at Reavis. IC Catholic Prep led 18-0 at the end of the first quarter and 30-0 at halftime. Eva Calles led the Knights with 14 points. Also, IC Catholic Prep dropped a 4842 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division decision to Wheaton St. Francis in overtime. IC Catholic Prep led 9-5 after the first quarter and 22-8 at halftime. The Knights were up 33-20 after three quarters but were outscored 18-5 in the fourth quarter to force the extra session.

Wagner led the Knights with 28 points. Allie Geiger added seven points.

“In the second half, we knew who their shooters were and we let their shooters take their shots.

We didn’t close out and we didn’t cheat to their side. Their shooters hit some big 3s. We also were sloppy with the ball and had way too many turnovers in the second half. Even with the turnovers, if we would have done a better job with their outside shooters we would have been fine.

They hit three 3s in the fourth quarter and hit two more in overtime. Their shooters got open looks and we didn’t close out on them. They shot 3s in the first half, but not the volume they shot in the second half. Tip your hat to them, but we let them shoot and we got sloppy with the basketball. Getting outscored 18-5 in the fourth quarter is a result of us being careless with the ball and not getting shots off. And Claire scored 28 of our 42 points. We need other kids to step up.”

IC Catholic Prep is in the midst of playing in the Lisle Cage Classic holiday tournament that also has been affected by COVID-19 protocols.

Action at Lisle concludes today with place-finish games. IC Catholic Prep is the No. 4 seed in the 16-team field. The championship game is slated for 8 p.m. tonight. “The kids are looking forward to Lisle,” Fisher said late last week. “We had a good film session and some good days of practice.”

“It’s always been my mentality since I started to schedule games,” he said. “We want to see as good of competition as we can see, and not that it only is there at the Class 3A and 4A level, but sometimes those teams provide the length, size and quickness we don’t always see. If you can learn through those games, the wins and losses aren’t the main thing. It will show that you can compete, and it goes a long

way toward our development as a team. There is always that fine line where you don’t want to get beat up all the time — you need a level of success there. Fortunately, we have been able to learn some things through these wins and losses and we hope to continue to do that.”

Timothy was off to a 3-0 start in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division play with wins against Wheaton Academy, IC Catholic Prep and Aurora Christian.

DuPage Foundation’s annual benefit raises more than $515,000 A virtual celebration of philanthropy was held recently as the DuPage Foundation’s Annual Benefit: A Starry Night in DuPage, welcomed an estimated 400 participants tuning in to the evening’s program across DuPage County and beyond.

With stellar support from generous donors, community partners and sponsors, the Benefit has grossed more than $515,000 to fuel Foundation operations and activities with additional gifts expected through year-end.

DuPage Foundation President and CEO Dave McGowan hosted the event with Foundation partner and celebrated community leader, Nicki Anderson. “I am humbled by the unwavering generosity the Foundation has received in support of the Benefit,” said McGowan. “From our Premier Sponsor, Northern Trust, to all of our sponsors and donors, we thank you for the pivotal role you play in advancing the work of the Foundation and helping us make a difference in our community. Nearly $115,000 was raised during the Foundation’s virtual paddle raise thanks to a $25,000

lead matching challenge gift from DuPage Medical Group (now known as Duly Health and Care) and $25,000 in matching gifts from Earl and Kay Harbaugh and Joe and Amy Weidenbach.

“DuPage Foundation’s Annual Benefit is always the most exciting night of the year as it brings us together to celebrate our passion for community impact,” said DuPage Foundation Board Chair Nate Wasson. “Thank you to all who supported the Benefit and joined us in our vision to raise the quality of life throughout DuPage County.” Prior to the event, attendees were invited to enter a drawing to recommend their favorite DuPage County not-for-profit organization to receive one of two $2,500 grants from DuPage Foundation. The two organizations drawn at random during the program were DuPage Symphony Orchestra and Mayslake Village.

“We were so excited to have received this grant,” said Mike Frigo, president and CEO of Mayslake Village. “It will be used to assist our low-income senior citizens in paying for their dental, vision and audiology needs, which they cannot afford, and which are not covered by Medicare.”
