District 205 Board and teachers approve new 3-year contract

ELMHURST — At its Tuesday, November 24 meeting, the Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board of Education approved a new Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Elmhurst Teachers’ Council (ETC) in a 5-2 vote. The agreement was ratified by the ETC membership on Friday, November 20.

“I want to thank all parties for the significant time commitment they made to this process,” said Board President Shannon Ebner. “We hope to continue conversations aimed at improving district-wide collaboration and building stronger relationships between teachers, administration and the Board. It was important to settle this contract so that we can return our professional conversations to learning and teaching, thereby heightening our focus on student achievement.”

ELMHURST — Time is drawing closer and closer to the grand opening of the Elmhurst Yorkfield Food Pantry.

Board members recently took a tour to oversee the most recent progress.

“The building is under one roof, with the exterior stonework, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and dry walling well underway,” said Larry Studer, a member of the EYFP Board.

“The contractor thinks completion could be in mid-December, allowing for a soft opening.”

According to Jim Ruprecht, the new building’s capital campaign is in its final phase but more funds are needed.

“Our target is $875,000 and right now, we’re at about $815,000-$820,000,” Ruprecht recently told the Independent in an exclusive interview.

All donations are matched 50 cents on the dollar by Ruprecht’s own “Thing 1.2.3 Foundation.”

Still, work at the project has pushed on.

“We’re lucky the weather turned nice, there will still be a few nice days to finish the outside work,” he said. “Soon we won’t be [restricted by the weather].”

This is the crew of Boy Scouts who gave their time and talent to the Yorkfield Food Pantry by laying brick to make the patio outside. It more or less indicated the end of the construction work and the beginning of the beautification of the building.

He went on to say the Board is still expecting to be able to open in December, even though the additional funds are needed.

“We’ve had great support from the community from all different sectors, religious, ecumenical groups, those who responded from the churches, businesses and social clubs, matching grants, and then, there were the gifts in-kind,” he said. “We had reached out to Dave Kleinhans and he’s been involved with the lights project at York High School, among others. He got us connected with some kids at Fenwick [High School] about a year ago and they help raise funds and awareness for the

food pantry.

“They were helpful in other ways, too. One kid’s parent happened to have a window distributorship, so that’s where we got our windows.”

More help came from Tim Grant from Dulles Landscaping, which provided tree removal, sodding, etc.

“We’ve had people donate plumbing fixtures, tile for the bathroom; Chamberlain donated a garage door opener; one person provided the window coverings. Not everything was free, but some gave [goods] to us at cost.”

At the time of the interview, Ruprecht said two Eagle Scout candidates used the pantry as their community service project.

One helped tear down the old garage and install a shed.

Last week, a group of Scouts laid the brick patio.

“It’s been a great process for people in the community to come together,” Ruprecht said.

“We serve 4200 families and some people didn’t know [the food pantry] was there. My guess is that that number will go up once it opens. We are now ADA-accessible, which we weren’t before. The building is built in such a way that there is no longer any waiting outside in the weather.”

ELMHURST — After two years of meetings between the City and the Elmhurst Park District (EPD), the Public Works and Buildings (PWB) Committee has recommended that there be an agreement between the two organizations about temporary floodwater detention at York Commons.

After graduating high school, Anna May attended dental school and received her Dental Assistant Certificate. Her college years were spent attending the Kings Couriers, a Christian Youth Group. She married Irving Berge 59 years ago on May 12, 1956.

A member of Grace Bible Church for more than 50 years, Anna May’s love for The Lord was evident in the many lives she touched. She loved spending time and making memories with her family, which included going to sporting events and music concerts. She also loved vacationing with friends and family, which aided in her

Beloved wife of Irving; loving mother of Bonnie (Richard) Wallick, Dawn (Gary) Osborne and Daniel (Heather); devoted grandmother of eight; adoring great-grandmother of seven; dear daughter of the late Herman and Jennie Knapp; sweet sister of Jeannette (the late Robert) Murray and Margie (Albert) Ashworth; fond aunt of many nieces and nephews.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage to property/motor vehicle/ criminal trespass to property/ motor vehicle/ damage to city property Nov. 21 • Andrew T. Redmond, 21, of Chicago, was arrested in the 100 block of Arthur at around 1:23 a.m. Police said an officer responded to the report of an intoxicated driver who possibly drove onto the sidewalk and attempted to drive away in a delivery truck. During the investigation, an officer found a 2004 Mercedes on the scene, which was listed as stolen out of Evergreen Park.

According to police, the vehicle had been driven by Redmond, one of the delivery men. Redmond was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle.

• Damage to property was reported in the 400 block of Avery. Victims told police that a large tree limb had fallen on top of their vehicles which were parked in the driveway of their residence.

Disorderly conduct/ mischievous conduct/ disturbance Nov. 19 Nicholas Fecci, 20, of Kathonah, N.Y., was arrested in the 200 block of S. Fairfield at around 10:45 p.m. Police said officers responded to an intoxicated person who was banging on the victim’s back door. Fecci was found to be intoxicated, believing he was at his friend’s house. He was charged with disorderly conduct, consumption of alcohol by a minor and possession of a false ID.

Domestic incident Nov. 24 A complainant and suspect, who are divorced, were at a doctor’s office with their 11-year-old son, who has been ill for three weeks. According to police, the complainant and suspect began arguing inside the patient’s room about when the complainant was going to take their son for blood tests. The suspect called the complainant an undisclosed name, and grabbed his son and began pulling him by his coat sleeve out of the office.

The doctor’s office signed a no-trespass order against the suspect. Both left in separate vehicles.

DUI/DUI-drugs/illegal consumption/ possession of alcohol Nov. 22 • Eric Johnson, 36, of Addison, was arrested near Lake and West at around 9 p.m. Police said an officer responded to

Nov. 21 • Joseph Michael Barrette, 18, of Highland Park, was arrested in the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 1:08 a.m.

Police said an officer responded to the hall of a local college for the report of an intoxicated minor, and found Barrette in his room. According to police, Barrette had glassy, blood-shot eyes, was vomiting and his breath smelled of an alcoholic beverage. He was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor.

• Jeremias A. Lopez, 26, of Bensenville, and Narciso Garcia-Lopez, 23, of Addison, were arrested near York and Diversey at around 352 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Lopez was found to be DUI. He was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, no valid driver’s license, improper lane usage and improper lighting. He also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to reduce speed by Illinois State Police Chicago District because police said he had crashed into a vehicle on I-290 earlier.

Police said Garcia-Lopez, a passenger in the vehicle, gave a false name and was found to have a failure to appear warrant for mob action/battery/theft.

He was charged with resisting arrest, obstructing a police officer and illegal transportation of alcohol.

Nov. 20 • Timothy Lippeth, 38, of Elmhurst, was arrested near St. Charles and Fair at around 1:49 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Lippeth was found to be DUI. He was charged with DUI and speeding.

• Subsequent to a call about a loud party in the 200 block of N. Oak, police said officers made contact with two individuals urinating outside. Both stated they were under 21 years of age and had consumed alcoholic beverages while at a party at a home in the area.

Mateo Casanova, 20, and James Robley, 19, both of Elmhurst, were charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Nov. 23 An officer responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 600 block of W. Armitage at around 2 p.m. Police said a resident observed a suspect described as a white male between 35 and 40 years old, 5’8”, about 300 pounds, with black hair. The resident asked the suspect what he was doing and the suspect stated he was delivering a package; however, he was not holding any packages. The suspect immediately got into a gray, 4-door Ford Focus with tinted windows and black rims, and left eastbound on Armitage.

Possession of cannabis/drug paraphernalia/controlled substance/tobacco Nov. 24 • Jalen I. Loving, 21, of Hazel Crest, was arrested near St. Charles and Oakland Grove at around 7:29 p.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Loving was found to be in possession of a cannabis grinder and a plastic bag with cannabis residue. Loving was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and no plate light.

• Subsequent to a traffic stop, an unknown suspect near Maple and Third was found by police to be in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. The suspect was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and no seat belt.

Nov. 21 • Mohammed Awaoda, 20, of Evanston, was arrested in the 800 block of N. York at around 10:12 p.m. Police said Awaoda was found to be in possession of one gram of cannabis and was charged with possession.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/ identity theft/fraud/ forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/ robbery Nov. 24 An officer responded to Verizon in the 500 block of W. St. Charles at around 12:02 p.m. to the report of two unknown suspects who used fraudulent IDs to purchase one iPad Air 2 and one rosegold iPhone 6s 128GB at a total loss of $1,479.98. The two suspects had left the area before the officer arrived. The first suspect was described as a black male with short, black hair, wearing a burgundy Nike hoodie, khaki pants and brown shoes. The second suspect was described as a black female, 5’4” and about 140 pounds with medium length black hair and wearing a black or gray coat. An officer contacted the victim who stated she would follow up with Verizon and her other accounts for possible fraudulent activity.

Nov. 23 • Retail theft was reported at a food

store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 12:35 p.m. An officer viewed the store’s CCTV footage and observed an unknown suspect described as a black male wearing a grey ski hat, a blue jacket and blue jeans, pushing a shopping cart into the liquor area. The suspect had a brown jacket in the child seat area of the cart. Police said he removed eight bottles of vodka from the top shelf and concealed them by folding them inside the brown jacket. The suspect then left the store. An officer was unable to see the suspect’s vehicle because it was parked on the northeast side of the building and there was no camera in this area. The loss was estimated at $237.93.

• Theft was reported in the 600 block of S. Hillside at around 1:13 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed a delivered box from his front porch; the box contained a pair of Ugg boots valued at $200, two turkeys valued at $40 and two bottles of wine valued at $32. The victim will sign complaints if the suspect is located.

Nov. 21 • An employee of an ice cream store in the 100 block of W. Park told police they were counting the change bag from Nov. 21 transactions and found a $100 counterfeit bill. Police said the suspect who allegedly gave the store the counterfeit bill is described as a black male in his 30s, between 180 and 200 pounds, clean shaven, possibly wearing a hat, a dark brown coat and jeans.

The suspect ordered two scoops of ice cream, totaling $5.40, and paid with the counterfeit bill.

• Theft was reported in the 400 block of E. Adams St. at around 5:09 p.m.

A victim told police that jewelry and $1,600 in cash was stolen during a move from his prior residence.

Nov. 20 Burglary to a motor vehicle was reported at a hotel in the 700 block of N. York at around 6:52 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) shattered the driver’s side window of his unattended truck and removed a GPS valued at $200. The cost to repair the window is approximately $200.

Nov. 19 An unknown suspect was arrested at a local store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 8:38 p.m. and charged with retail theft. Police said the suspect attempted to take numerous makeup items and leave without paying.

Sept. 30-Nov. 18 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of S. Kenilworth at around 2:19 p.m. Police said an officer was assigned a fraud report in which the victim realized there were unauthorized charges on his credit card. Back in October, the listed suspect, who was a co-worker of the victim, made some charges to the account. The suspect was subsequently fired and the victim thought all was well. On Nov. 18, police said the victim received a call from the credit card company, which said he was late on a payment. The victim does not possess a card with this particular credit

More Crime News On Nov. 23-Nov. 24, theft was reported in the 900 block of County Line at around 11:06 a.m. A victim told police that he was contacted via telephone by an unknown female suspect who identified herself as an IRS agent. The caller told the victim that he needed to send $6,900 via money gram, otherwise he would be arrested and his family would be taken into custody by Homeland Security. The victim made several money gram payments totaling $8,750, and was in the process of sending additional funds when he was advised by his employer that he was being defrauded. The victim was advised to cease any further transactions with the suspect.

Attempt to purchase car nets loss of $7000 for victim Theft by deception was reported in the 100 block of W. Butterfield. A victim was introduced to an unknown suspect as a person who worked for Wells Fargo and sold repossessed vehicles for them. The victim was interested in a particular vehicle which the suspect found and requested a check for $7,000 as a deposit. The victim sent the check on Sept. 28 and it was cashed within a few days. The victim then sent a check for $1,755 for tax and licensing on Oct. 2. As time went by, the victim became suspicious. One of the vic-

On November 17, the person received a phone call, asking him to pay a lien he had with the U.S. Treasury Department, but the resident knew he had no liens. He was given a phone number and a threat -- “If we don’t hear from you legal action will be taken.”

Placed in a Google search, the phone number comes up as a

scam.

Then on November 23, the same person received yet another call, this time from a women who said she worked for the “U.S.A. Treasury Department.” She claimed the resident was guilty of tax evasion. The phone number provided was also a scam.

cious and important paper that your child was tasked to diligently carry home on the first day of school sits in a crumpled state at the bottom of a backpack or on the floorboards of the backseat of the minivan until it inexplicably makes its way into the laundry pile.

Whether you find it before or after the wash cycle is entirely up to luck.

In addition to procrastination, really big projects often require poster board and parental participation, which comes after the procrastination threatens a C-minus and parents can no longer ignore the obvious. The

work must somehow get done and the assignment becomes a really big family project requiring parental prodding and supervision.

This leads to the thing I like best about really big projects: the amount of learning that takes place. Sometimes the knowledge even rubs off on the student.

We’ve muddled through our fair share of big projects. My kids have mapped out the entire planet, created a timeline of the history of the world, grown tadpoles, mold and Monarchs (butterflies, not royalty). Our experience with big projects is vaster than the projects themselves. Right now, we are growing sugar crystals. Or, I guess I should say we are attempting the task. We haven’t yet had so much as a sprout. I doubt we will.

I should have seen this coming. This isn’t my first sugar crystal dog and pony show. I’ve

been through eighth grade science a time or two (or five, but who’s counting?) and I’ve witnessed more than a couple crystal flops. I was tempted to tell my son this a couple of weekends ago as he stirred his sugar water concoction on the stove and chattered about the assignment.

“My teacher said it’s easy to grow crystals,” he said. “Only one or two in our whole class won’t get them.”

“Prepare to be part of the minority,” I wanted to say out loud. “Failure is most likely in your future.” I mouthed the words silently because a good mom never discourages enthusiasm about school projects.

Still, if the glass is half empty you might as well call it like you see it. Over the years I’ve spent months peering into sugar-water-filled jars looking for any hint of crystals and I’ve yet to see a single grain. Our formations have been as scarce

as an A-plus on a failed science experiment and our inadequacies are crystal clear – to me, at least.

My son, however, remains optimistic. His glass is halffull, albeit not with crystals.

And, although his progress may be lacking, he knows it’s important to complete the really big project with due diligence – crystals or not. He is photographing his water a few times a week to document the lack of any activity or formations. He is writing notes about his crystal deficiencies. He is holding out – with a hope reserved for 13-year-olds – that his crystals will grow.

And who knows? Maybe they will. I hope they do. I sure do.

very parent has experienced the phenomenon.

Your child is given an assignment on the first day of class. It is no normal assignment, but one that requires ongoing work throughout the coming weeks or months. It is the Really Big School Project.

Really big projects might involve science, geography, math or English literature, but they all start out the same: with a worksheet detailing the details of the assignment. This includes research requirements, data collection, final format and due date, the latter of which seems very far off until unexpectedly your child finds him or herself with three days to meet said due date and it is crunch time.

Responsible parents (which obviously includes all of us) wouldn’t ignore the due date save for one thing. The assignment worksheet never makes it to the kitchen table. This pre-

DELAWARE, OH — It takes tremendous amounts of work to prepare a puppy for life as a Canine Companions assistance dog and volunteer puppy raisers complete a large portion of that work. This time of year, when people reflect on what they are thankful for, Canine Companions would like to recognize and thank volunteer puppy raisers. “I am so thankful for the work our puppy raisers do,” said Puppy Program Manager Suzanne Sliclen. “They dedicate a lot of time out of their day to accommodate the needs and expectations of our puppies and it is all in the hope that the puppy will go on to change someone else’s life.” Catherine Rupp, who lives in Elmhurst, is currently raising her fourth puppy for Canine Companions.

Volunteer puppy raisers provide basic obedience, socialization and love for approxi-

mately 16 months. The pups then return to the organization for training to master the commands necessary to enhance the life of someone with a disability. “Seeing a puppy become a fully-trained assistance dog and make a life-changing impact on someone with a disability is incredibly rewarding,” Catherine said. “Everyone asks, ‘How can you give up the dog?’ but really we’re getting much more in return by being part of something so profound.”

Volunteer puppy raisers like Catherine make it possible for Canine Companions to provide assistance dogs to people with disabilities at no cost to the recipients. ELMHURST — From Nov. 16-20, students of Bryan Middle School collected food for the United Community Concerns Assn.

(UCCA), which provides food for hungry families at the holidays.

The schools often have a little friendly competition. This year’s winners were Mrs. McDonald (6th grade), Ms. Bolur (7th grade), and Mrs. Samp (8th grade). Even more incredible, the school collected 5,383 items for the UCCA, which was more than 150 boxes of food, beating last year’s total by almost 2,000 items.

Members of the Bryan Student Council, along with the UCCA volunteers, stayed late one evening to count, sort and pack up all the food. UCCA says every year that Bryan collects the most food in the district..

“I’m overwhelmed by the generosity of so many in our community,” said Heather Bolur, the Student Council sponsor at Bryan.

“We truly will make a difference for over 300 families that UCCA helps in Elmhurst. What a great accomplishment!”

In addition to the items collected by Bryan Middle School, Hawthorne and Lincoln elementary schools had a little contest with Lincoln collecting 1,302 pounds of food and Hawthorne collecting 1,202 pounds.

Hospital volunteer still gets a move on at 93 Has delivered newspapers to patients for almost 60 years ELMHURST — In 1957, Miriam Handke signed up to volunteer at Elmhurst Hospital at the urging of a friend.

The friend thought the opportunity would help her work through the loss of her husband, who passed away a year earlier, leaving her a widow with an 8-year-old son.

Now, 58 years later, Handke’s volunteer shift has become a way for her to help others who may need a dose of cheer or a comforting word.

Now at age 93, she is still doing the same job she started with — delivering newspapers. When she started, she would offer papers for sale to patients and staff. Now she delivers stacks of papers to each department in the hospital. She’s there every Thursday morning, rain or shine, according to Dee Panek, the hospital’s volunteer coordinator.

“Miriam is an inspiration and a role model for living a healthy-driven lifestyle. She is well rounded in all aspects of her life — spiritually, mentally and physically,” Panek said.

When asked for her secret to a long, healthy life, Handke said simply, “Well, I keep going. There’s always something.”

Walking has been the best exercise through the years, she said. She walks two miles through Elmhurst Hospital once a week, and plans to increase that mileage by walking the hospital on days she’s not volunteering.

“I walk the halls in my apartment building,” she said. “I’m doing something all the time.”

Her current regimen mirrors her younger self. She never started a formal exercise program, but was always moving — roller skating, swimming, biking, playing tennis, bowling.

Another key to Handke’s longevity: healthy eating. Although a diabetic, Handke doesn’t load up on processed food or sugar. She keeps portions small

and balances treats with healthy options.

She often makes twice-baked potatoes at home and freezes them for herself.

“I don’t eat a lot of desserts — though I love them,” she said.

Volunteering at the hospital has provided a mental health benefit, too.

In her purse, Handke still carries a 7-year-old thank you note she received from a patient. The card is tucked into

a plastic sleeve to keep it from tearing.

The patient spoke briefly with her years ago when Handke offered to sell her a newspaper. The woman didn’t want a paper, but the conversation had an effect on her. It affected Handke, too.

“You never know if there’s something you say or something you do that touches a life,” she said.

The weekly tasks and her interactions

at the hospital have helped her carry on through life’s ups and downs.

“It hasn’t been a completely smooth, no-problems life. But you have to say, ‘Okay, I’m going to go on and I’m not going to dwell in the past,’” she said. “I just keep going.”

ICGS seventh and eighth graders take top honors at math competition ELMHURST — On Saturday, November 14, seventh and eighth grade students from Immaculate Conception Grade School in Elmhurst competed in two local high school math competitions.

In the morning, students competed at the IC Catholic Prep Math Contest. With

19 schools and almost 150 students competing, ICGS finished in third place overall. The ICGS students who participated were Brendan Carey, Anna Dray (top 20%), Michael Hilgart, Aidan Janc, Carl Knable (top 20%), Michael Kuhl, Molly Loch, Sydney Malaga, Leeza Maloney, Brian Moore, Bella

Roelle, Josh Schierl, Kaylee Wilson, Richard Buehling, Audrey Buffo, Max Cook, Michael Kapsch (top 5%), Grace Maietta (top 20%), Louis Narcisi, Jack O’Brien, Rachel Simonides, and Tommy Sloan (top 20%).

Later that afternoon, some students went on to compete at the Fenwick Math

Contest, which hosted 30 schools with 260 students split into two divisions. Participants from ICGS included Aidan Janc (7th place), Carl Knable (6th place), Leeza Maloney, Josh Schierl, Kaylee Wilson, Clark Davis (4th place), Michael Kapsch, and Tommy Sloan.

County Board approves 2016 budget County sales tax to drop ¼ cent The County sales tax will fall one-quarter of a cent on January 1, 2016. That portion of the sales tax currently funds the DuPage Water Commission, which moves toward becoming a self-sustaining utility. The sales tax reduction returns an estimated $33 million to consumers.

This is the eighth year in a row, and the fifth year under Chairman Cronin the county passed a budget without a property tax increase. The 2016 budget includes a flat $66.9 million in property taxes. DuPage County retains a AAA bond rating.

WHEATON — Last week, the DuPage County Board approved the 2016 budget, which includes reduced spending and, for the eighth consecutive year, has no property tax increase.

“This budget highlights my commitment and the Board’s commitment to live within our means while offering the highest level of service to our residents without raising property taxes,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “For the past five years, we have been fiscally responsible, open and transparent to taxpayers and we have been able to accomplish remarkable savings while still fulfilling our mission as a County government.”

The 2016 spending plan is $444.4 million, which is down $5.1 million from the previous year’s approved budget. Since taking office in 2010, Cronin has cut more than $33 million from the county’s budget. The plan further includes $56.5 million in capital projects for storm water,

drainage and road construction.

“This has been an unusual year as we await a final budget from Springfield,” said Finance Committee Chair Paul Fichtner. “In response, we’ve built a conservative County budget. Our careful approach has served us well and provides the flexibility we need as we prepare for the year ahead.”

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team wins Coal City tournament Burrows scores 20 or more points in three of the victories

ELMHURST — The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team successfully defended its title at the Coal City tournament.

The Knights went a perfect 4-0 to win the tournament crown for the second year in a row.

IC Catholic Prep, shorthanded without three players still making the transition from a successful football season (Jordan Rowell, Matt Sutton and Garrett Cheng), started the tournament with a 77-39 win over Serena.

The Knights led 22-6 after the first quarter and 33-18 at halftime. The Knights used a 29-10 run in the third quarter to put things away.

Troy Burrows led the Knights with 24 points (five 3-pointers). Will Lyles added 10 points, while Austin Reed had 11 points, Tony Gaudio had eight points and Alex Meurer had seven points. The Knights had nine 3-pointers as a team.

IC Catholic Prep then recorded a 57-35 win over Morris.

Burrows again led the Knights in scoring with 26 points (three 3-pointers). Lyles chipped in 12 points, while Reed had nine points and Gaudio added eight points.

In a 56-46 win over host Coal City, Reed had 22 points (two 3-pointers), while Burrows had 17 points (three 3-pointers).

Lyles added 11 points. The game was tied 9-9 after the first quarter and the Knights trailed 23-22 at halftime. IC Catholic Prep used a 19-12 third quarter and a 15-11 fourth-quarter advantage to pull away. The Knights hit seven 3-pointers in the game.

The Knights wrapped up the tournament with a 63-52 win over Gardner South Wilmington.

Burrows led the way with 20 (six 3-pointers). Reed added 13 points, while Trey Morris had

nine points and Lyles had eight points. Gaudio finished with six points.

The Knights hit 10 threepointers in the game. “We played pretty well,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell.

Tyrrell cited strong tournament play from Burrows from the outside, Lyles in the post, as well as Reed, Angel Ramirez, Jack Ricobene and Gaudio among many contributors.

“Troy shot the ball extremely well,” said Tyrrell. “He shot above 60 percent from the 3-point line. Will gave us solid play down low and Austin had a big scoring game for us. Angel Ramirez has been a real leader on and off the court and Jack Ricobene has stepped up and took advantage of opportunities.

The Knights went 11-2 and made it to the Class 3A state semifinals, losing to eventual state champion Bishop McNamara. IC Catholic Prep’s only two losses were to Bishop McNamara (to start the season and end the season).

The team’s statistics further point to a season of excellence on both sides of the football.

On offense, quarterback Luke Ricobene finished the year completing 164 of 269 passes (61 percent) for 2,345 yards. He threw 27 touchdown passes and had only 13 interceptions.

He finished with a 102.5 quarterback rating.

Running back Jordan Rowell ran the ball 201 times for 1,682 yards (8.4 yards per carry). He averaged 140.2 yards rushing per game. Rowell scored 24 rushing touchdowns and

Lazerick Eatman ran 64 times for 514 yards and five scores. He averaged 8.0 yards per carry and had a pair of 100-yard games. Leo Guzman and Brendan O’Brien each had a 100-yard rushing game.

The Knights rolled up 3,130 yards on the ground (7.7 yards per carry) and averaged 240.8 rushing yards per game. As a team, there were 11 instances of players running for more than 100 yards in a game. The Knights had 37 rushing touchdowns.

Pat Jordan led the receivers with 44 catches for 603 yards (13.7 yards per catch) and nine touchdowns. Luke Calles had 29 catches for 331 yards and four touchdowns (11.4 yards per catch). Garrett Cheng had 26 catches for 380 yards (14.6 yards per catch) and four touchdowns. Pat Guinan had 19 catches for 347 yards and five scores. He averaged 18.3 yards per catch. Rowell caught 32 passes for 458 yards and two touchdowns (14.3 yards per catch).

IC Catholic Prep receivers had long catches of 86, 79, 47 (twice), 44 and 40 yards this past season.

Rowell racked up an impressive 2,423 all-purpose yards, an average of 201.9 yards per game.

On defense, Jim Kenneally led the way with 157 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, an impressive 23 quarterback sacks (for 202 yards in losses), 20 quarterback hurries and five fumble recoveries.

Anthony Silva had 115 tackles.

Jose Rodriguez added 101 tackles.

Freshman Kemon Reese also had 101 tackles to go with three quarterback sacks and three fumble recoveries.

Robert Vitek and Jack Lamborn each had two quarterback sacks.

Matt Sutton had six interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

Guinan and Jordan each had three interceptions.

As a team, IC Catholic Prep had 39 takeaways on defense and committed only 21 turnovers on offense (plus-18 turnover ratio).

In the team’s final game against

Bishop McNamara, Ricobene completed 12 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown.

Rowell ran 27 times for 140 yards and one touchdown. Ricobene ran nine times for 42 yards, while Eatman had six carries for 17 yards. The Knights totaled 199 yards on the ground.

Cheng led the receivers with five catches for 49 yards. Guinan had three catches for 54 yards and a touchdown, while Jordan had three catches for 46 yards. The Knights were stung by five turnovers on offense. Going into the game the team was averaging only 1.3 turnovers per game.

On defense Reese had 12 tackles.

James Lytton and Silva each had 10 tackles, while Sutton had seven tackles. Lamborn had a fumble recovery while Guinan had a pass deflection.

In addition to going 11-2, the Knights also won the Metro Suburban Conference West Division title with a 5-0 record.

ELMHURST — The Timothy Christian boys basketball team took the meaning of the word rebound to heart.

After losing its first game in the Lisle tournament, the Trojans rebounded to score consecutive wins over Hinckley-Big Rock and Lisle.

Timothy started the tournament with a loss to Chicago Perspectives. “The first game we played decently, but we did not shoot the ball very well,” said Timothy coach Jack LeGrand. “We had a lot of shots go in and out—close ones and

far ones. The game was pretty close. They would make a run and then we would come back.

We just didn’t get enough to fall at the end.”

LeGrand liked how his team responded in the win against Hinckley-Big Rock.

“We played a little better team game,” the coach said. “I thought we played much better.

I think some of those first-game nerves were gone.”

LeGrand felt the team played well on both ends of the court in the victory against Lisle.

“We had a nice defensive effort and shot the ball well,” he said.

“The guys got their feet wet and have started to get more confidence. Some guys were playing in their first varsity games in the tournament and

had to realize that they were good enough to play at the varsity level. We’re stating to realize that. It’s been nice to see us work the bugs out and learn from these games.”

In the Perspectives game, Timothy trailed 21-10 after the first quarter and 29-23 at halftime. Perspectives outscored Timothy 18-12 in the third quarter en route to a 64-48 win.

Ben Lodewyk led the Trojans with 20 points, six rebounds and two assists. Joey Davidson had 15 points and five rebounds.

Jared Rhiner added nine points and seven rebounds, while Josh Caver had two points and seven rebounds. Mitch Evenhouse had five assists.

In a 67-44 win against Hinckley-Big Rock, Timothy led 10-6

after the first quarter and 31-14 at halftime.

Lodewyk had 20 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Davidson had 12 points, five rebounds and two assists. Jonny Strube had nine points and six rebounds. Trayvon Williams had 10 points and four rebounds.

Caver added five points, three rebounds and one assist. Evenhouse had two points and one rebound. Bryan Leide had two points and one rebound. Rhiner had two points, three rebounds and one assist. Joe Bootsma had three rebounds and one assists. Nick Tameling had three points and six rebounds.

Tyler LeGrand had two points and one rebound. Jon Hoestrka also played and contributed to the win.

In the win against Lisle, Davidson exploded for 25 points, while Strube came off the bench to score 15 points.

“We have a lot of guys contributing and getting us what we need,” said LeGrand. “Besides the guys who are scoring, Josh Caver has been rebounding very well and we’re getting good play off the bench from Trayvon Williams and Jonny Strube. Mitchell Evenhouse has done a very good job running the point for us.”

Timothy opens Metro Suburban Conference East Division play Friday at Illiana Christian.

“Illiana is a good team and the game is at their place,” said LeGrand. “It’s going to be a battle. We are going to have to be ready.”

York’s Helton headed to SIU-Edwardsville Senior wrestler has his sights set on big things this season

ork senior wrestler Tommy Helton knew he was on to something when he went on an official college visit to Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

“When I went on that visit everything felt like it was meant to be,” he said. “The team enjoyed being together. It felt like a family. The coaches there are young and are into it. I saw an up-and-coming program that I think will do big things. I wanted to be part of that.”

Thus, Helton recently signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his education and wrestling career at the Division I school.

Helton would like to study something education-related. “I want to come back and be a teacher and a wrestling coach,” he said.

Helton’s happy he was able to make his college decision prior to York’s season starting. “My goal was to make a decision before the season,” he said. “I wanted all the pressure off my shoulders. I didn’t want to go out there and wrestle not to lose and be fearful college coaches would look down on me. I wanted to be able to go out there this season and work my tail off, have a lot of fun and wrestle for me.”

But before he heads south, Helton has a senior season at York to tend to. Helton, a heavyweight wrestler, is coming off a junior year where he qualified for the Class 3A state

tournament and finished with a 34-12 record. Another 30-win season for Helton would mean joining the 100-career-win club at York. He had 70 coming into the season.

Helton also had quite an eventful offseason, placing second at the world team trials competition and also earning double All-American honors in freestyle and Greco at the Fargo (N.D.) nationals. He also was part of the Team Illinois squad that competed at the dual-team nationals.

“All the off-season work has helped me a tremendous amount,” said Helton. “I’ve been able to work with different practice partners, and find different workouts and big tournaments to help me get better.”

Helton minces no words when talking about what his ultimate goal is this season—to win a state championship.

“That’s the overall goal this season,” he said. “I want to end my high school career on top. Nobody wants to end the season with a loss.

This is coach (Terry) Clarke’s last year. It would be awesome to send him out with a state champion.”

Helton knows there is a long way to go before getting to Champaign.

“It’s going to take a lot of hard work and determination,” he said. “I’m fortunate that I have a lot of people by my side that have helped me throughout the years. I have strong support from my family, coaches and teammates. People have been there for me through the ups and downs mentally. Wrestling is an incredibly mental sport. You have to have the right mindset. I’ve been blessed to have a lot of people around me that have helped me with that.”

Clarke sees big things on the

horizon for Helton this season.

“Tommy Helton’s goal is to win a state title,” said Clarke. “It’s our goal for him as well. There are a lot of talented wrestlers in his weight class and he is definitely in the hunt.

He will be good. He does not know the meaning of going half speed. He gives all he has every day. He’s a great teammate and an even better person. He’s a fun young man to coach.”

Helton also is excited about this year’s York team and its potential for improvement. Helton is one of the senior captains on the squad.

“I don’t look at being a leader too much,” he said. “I don’t go in there trying to be a leader. When I was a freshman I learned from seniors setting examples. I was just a freshman trying to crack the varsity lineup and I learned a lot. I’ve been on the varsity for four years now. I’ve made myself and I want to pull people with me and help them out and help them with opportunities. I’ve been that kind of a person since freshman year.”

Helton knows having goals are one thing, but making those goals become a reality is something different. “It’s all about putting it together on the mat,” he said. “In the past I had great tournaments and then would have mental lapses and break down in important matches. I’ve shown during the off-season that I can win big matches. You just need to put it all together. I’m going out there this year to show that there is a new Tom Helton. I’ve been anxious to get out there since the middle of football season. I’ve been counting the days until I can get out on the mat and show people the new Tom Helton.”

ELMHURST — Veteran York wrestling coach Terry Clarke labels this year’s squad as a “tale of two teams.”

“We have some good guys coming back and some younger guys who will help us out,” said Clarke, in his 26th season as head coach (456 career wins) and 36th season at York.

“We might have some growing pains at the beginning of the season but we will get better and better as the year goes on.”

Clarke said competing in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division will give his

wrestlers some vital experience throughout the season.

“We will have to deal with the fact that our conference is pretty brutal,” he said. “It’s kind of a best-case scenario for us. We know we are going to come together because we are going to face great competition every week. There are no easy matches on our schedule.

That’s the way it is around the suburbs here. There are really good teams everywhere. We know we will have to take some lumps early on, but at the same time it gives our guys the opportunity to gain that experience and really shine in the long run.”

York, which went 14-16 last year in duals, returns state qualifier Tommy Helton at 285 pounds. Helton, a threeyear starter, went 34-12 last

year and has 70 career varsity wins. He also had success in the offseason, earning double All-American honors at Fargo (N.D.) nationals.

“Tommy had a great summer earning double All-American honors,” said Clarke. “He really worked hard. He hit the weight room hard and got a lot of work in on the mat. Tommy represents York High School in a way we all are very proud of.”

Also back is junior Austin Hoffmann (138 pounds). He went 26-16 a year ago. Senior Demetri Karabelos won 12 matches last year and will wrestle at 120. Senior Brian Nudera (195 pounds) won 15 matches as a junior, while senior Luke Wagner won seven matches.

Wagner will compete at 145 pounds.

In addition to Helton, Nudera

is one of the team captains.

“Brian and Tommy both are good leaders,” said Clarke.

“Tommy has big goals. He wants to win a state championship. We’re also looking for breakout years from guys like Austin, Luke, Demetri and Brian. They all are very solid performers.”

Newcomers to the group include the likes of: Ryan Costello (sophomore, 113 pounds), Matteo Vigilante (junior, 106), Anthony Tovar (senior, 145), Jesus Cervantes (junior, 132), Antonio Gutierrez (freshman, 126), Chris Jaeger (senior, 145), Blake Quarrie (junior, 220), Billy Reich (junior, 170) and Norman Stapleton (senior, 182). Quarrie qualified for the frosh-soph state tournament last year.

“All these guys are first-year

varsity guys but they all had real good years on the lower levels,” said Clarke. “Antonio Gutierrez is only a freshman but he had a good year with the Junior Dukes and had a good summer. He will step right in and hold his own. He’s pretty good.”

York started the season with a quadrangular at McHenry High School last weekend. “The guys we have coming back we have great expectations for and the other guys joining the team are going to grow up as the year goes on and they will improve,” said Clarke. “We are going to improve as a team. We’re far from being in dire straits. We have a lot of young guys who are talented and will get better as the season goes on. We’re looking forward to the season.”

One area the team is zeroing in on is shooting. “We are working on getting our shots down,” said Strube. “We missed a ton of layups in the tournament.”

Strube liked how her team competed in a loss to Ottawa. “We were down by three with a minute left and we lost by 10 points,” she said. “Our record wasn’t great in the tournament, but it didn’t tell the whole story. We saw some good things and we saw some things we still need to work on.”

Point guard Allison Zeilstra returned to action after coming off an ACL knee injury. “Alison is playing hard and is working her way back,” said Strube. “She’s coming back from a tough injury.

She will get there.”

Strube noted Timothy does not have the height it did last year.

“We will have to be creative this year,” she said. “We aren’t an inside team anymore.”

Another positive has been the team’s varied contributions on offense. “In the game we won Olivia Hoekstra had 18 points and Dani Van Laten had 12 points,” she said. “That’s the type of team we are going to be where girls are scoring, eight, nine, six and seven points. In the tournament I saw what I thought I would. It was a team effort with the scoring and that’s a good thing. We’ll keep working on the little things. We’ve seen some things on defense that we can tweak. That tournament was good for us. It’s not an easy tournament, but it helped prepare us.”

In addition to the play of Hoekstra and Van Laten, Timothy also was bolstered by the likes of Tyra Hopson (junior guard), Hope Zastrow (junior forward) and Eillie Wiener (senior guard).

“Olivia and Dani were very solid,” said Strube. “Having Dani back is a big help. Tyra scored nine points in a game and seven in another. Her shot is very nice and she knows the game. Hope was big for us with rebounding. She had nine rebounds, 11 rebounds, and then five and six. Hope is in there rebounding all the time. She’s only 5-7 but she is scrappy and works hard. She did a nice job for us.

Ellie helped us at point guard and showed her senior leadership.”

Timothy opened its Metro Suburban Conference East Division schedule earlier this week against Illiana Christian.

“We had a tough start in the tournament, but I was proud of the effort,” said Strube. “Our girls played very hard and didn’t get down on themselves. They kept encouraging each other and they came ready to play. They are going to get there.”

Strube noted seniors Grace Miller, Alison DeBoer and Van Laten were voted team captains by their teammates.

I thank my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Manilla, for singing at her desk when we worked quietly.

(She sang and hummed The Carpenters. Isn’t it crazy what we remember!)

I thank middle school teachers, Charm Bates (I will use that name for a character in a novel), Mr. Lundberg for dancing to “The Rubberband Man” at rec night, Mr. Lang for making us laugh, and Mrs. Falconer for liking my research paper on Charles Manson.

I thank Dr. Howard Mueller, Dr. Jack Shindler, and Dr. Richard Guzman, some of of my fave college professors. I am grateful for Susannah, Babs, Joan, Lyn, Sheri, Nadine, Patti and Dave, the sum total of my college roommates. So much growing up happened those four years and those pals were blessings in so many ways.

I thank many authors. Some I’ve met and hugged in the flesh include Anne Lamott, Dave Barry, Mary Engelb-

reit, Garrison Keillor, Deepak Chopra and Elizabeth Gilbert.

I thank some musicians who have blazed the trail of my dreams (and I have not thanked in person): Prince and Pink, Barry Manilow and Van Halen.

I thank Mel for being the editor in May 2001 who accepted me as a columnist and all the editors since in all the various papers. I thank you dear reader for buying a newspaper and reading. I thank you for writing me notes, and having me come speak to your groups.

My space is up and my thanks are just beginning. Let me close with thanking my dear sweet Prince Charming. He is a wonder and I marvel at him every day. I am so glad we are together. He makes every day a day of thanks giving.
