College launches contest for first generation students First prize is a four-year, full-tuition scholarship

Committed to helping students achieve the American Dream, Elmhurst College has announced the second annual American Dream Fellowship Competition, a scholarship contest that supports the enrollment of first-generation college students.

The first place winner will receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Elmhurst College. The second-place winner will receive a sti-

pend to cover four years’ room and board at Elmhurst. All students who enter the competition will receive a $1,000 annual American Dream Fellowship Grant, which can be added to previously awarded merit scholarships and/or grant aid.

All first-year admitted students (freshmen) who also are first-generation college students are invited to participate in the competition, which

consists of two rounds: • Round 1: Submit a video (no longer than three minutes) by Jan. 18, 2019, on this topic: As a first-generation student, what would graduating from college mean to you, your family and friends? Complete an application at elmhurst.edu/americandream.

• Round 2: On President’s Day 2019 (Monday, Feb. 18 from 1-4 p.m.), students and their families will

be invited to the second round of the competition, which will be held on the Elmhurst College campus. The event will include an interview with each student entrant, an opportunity for entrants and their families to hear from current and former first-generation Elmhurst students, and a panel discussion for parents.

Round 2 concludes with an awards

ceremony hosted by Elmhurst College President Troy D. VanAken, who was a first-generation college student himself.

“Higher education has the power to transform lives,” VanAken said. “We’re eager to hear from our first-generation students and to celebrate their decision to come to Elmhurst College.”

According to the Bensenville Police Reports this week, there were two separate incidents of bomb threats reported by complainant on Dec. 13. One incident was reported at about 2:05 p.m. in the 1000 block of W. Green St. The second was reported from the 1000 block of W. Irving Park Road at about 3:55 p.m.

In both cases, each of the complainants reported receiving a bomb threat via email if bitcoin ransom was not paid. Both cases remain under investigation.

A similar incident was reported to Elmhurst Police last week as well.

Elmhurst coffee shop brews up warmth this winter

Pilot Pete’s Coffee & Treats, the Elmhurst Police Department and the Elmhurst community have teamed up to help the Chicagoland homeless this winter season.

“We have been collecting donations and distributing them right to those in need,” Peter Thomas owner of Pilot Pete’s Coffee and Treats.

Every year from November to March, Pilot Pete’s Coffee and Treats collects thousands of jackets and supplies for the homeless. In past years Pilot Pete’s has teamed up with Pacific Garden Mission, Chicago’s largest homeless shelter hosting more 1,200 people a night.

Every two weeks, Pete’s customers join in, as they bring donations directly to the homeless.

Last winter alone, Pilot Pete’s has personally donated 460 gallons of coffee, as well as more than 5,600 jackets and sweaters. They brew gallons of coffee per trip for the homeless to enjoy while they choose their donations.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Harassment, threats

July 1-Dec. 17 A victim in the 100 block of S. Lawndale told police at around 11:03 a.m. that he has been receiving threatening and harassing phone calls between the above dates from a suspect regarding construction work performed by the victim. An officer advised the suspect to no longer have contact with the victim and to address the matter in civil court.

Assault, battery

Dec. 15 A reporting officer responded to Elmhurst Hospital at around 9:17 p.m. for a delayed sexual assault case which occurred in North Carolina. Reports and investigation were transferred to the Greenville, N.C. Police Department.

Dec. 14 Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital at around 3:56 a.m. for a sexual assault investigation. The victim stated she was assaulted while in Chicago but did not want to speak with police or make a report. An investigation is pending.

Police said officers responded to the report of a fight in progress in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 9:08 p.m. Upon arrival, the suspect was observed arguing with the victim who is employed as security at a club. The victim reports the suspect head-butted him and pushed him; however he was not willing to sign complaints. The suspect was taken to the police department to wait for a cab home.

Disorderly conduct

Dec. 18 Police said officers were called to a pharmacy for a bomb threat. An unknown suspect called the pharmacy and stated he had a bomb.

The building was searched with no results. An investigation determined a juvenile made the phone call as a prank. A juvenile disposition is pending.

Dec. 17 Police said officers responded to the 500 block of N. Kenilworth at around 2:53 a.m. after Chas Johnson, 31, of Chicago, called 911 stating he was being stabbed by someone he loved. Upon arrival, police said Johnson and his girlfriend were located. Johnson was intoxicated, but not stabbed, according to police.

Johnson was charged with felony disorderly conduct.

Dec. 15 A victim at a dealership in the 500 block of W. Lake told police at around 5:13 p.m. that he was asked to train a new hire at the dealership. On the third day of working there, she filed a sexual harassment claim stating he had made a sexual remark towards her. The victim claims it was a misunderstanding and she was just trying to get him fired. On the above date, the suspect, a family member of the exemployee, came into the dealership making threats towards the victim. The suspect was contacted and denied making any threats towards the victim. He was informed not to have any further contact with the victim.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Dec. 18 A complainant in the 700 block of N. Van Auken told police at around 2:19 p.m. that the suspect was upset and breaking things inside of the house after his grandmother allowed a DCFS worker into their home. No arrests were made.

Dec. 16 A victim in the 600 block of S. Edgewood

CALL 800-222-TIPS told police at around 3:13 a.m. that her fiancée was intoxicated and went to bed when she went through his phone and observed messages from another woman. The victim confronted the suspect and they allegedly began pushing each other. Medics responded after the suspect went back to bed and reportedly was unable to be woken due to his intoxication. The suspect was transported to Elmhurst Hospital by medics. No complaints were to be signed for domestic battery.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication

Dec. 20 Maria Calderon-Hernandez, 47, of Northlake, was charged with DUI, no valid driver’s license and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Addison at around 1:36 a.m.

Dec. 19 Matthew Anderson, 18; Timothy Baer, 19; Ryan P. Costello, 18; Aiden M. Gawne, 18; and Benjamin D. St. Clair, 18, all of Elmhurst, were each issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor and prowling in the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 1:07 a.m. Anderson, Baer, Costello and St. Clair were additionally cited for carrying a false ID. Police said officers responded to a report of five subjects who attempted to gain entry to buildings, knocked over several garbage cans, a dumpster, and holiday decorations.

Dec. 15 Nicholas Barnhill, 24, of Melrose Park, was charged with DUI, following too close, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Cottage Hill at around 1:34 a.m.

Oscar Martinez-Castel, 40, of Addison, was charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, operating a vehicle while registration was suspended for no insurance and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 12:52 a.m.

Keshara West, 28, of Lombard, was charged with DUI, resisting arrest and improper lane usage near Brush Hill and Commonwealth at around 4:04 a.m.

Dec. 14 Steven Papciak, 55, of Franklin Park, was charged with DUI and illegal transportation of alcohol subsequent to an officer observing Papciak allegedly drinking alcohol in his vehicle in the 100 block of E. Fullerton at around 9:36 p.m.

Dec. 13 Karen A. Sloan, 64, of Downers Grove, was charged with DUI, driving the wrong way on a

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Dec. 19 Darnell Bass, 48, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Willow at around 12:35 p.m. Police said Bass was a passenger in a vehicle where a glass crack pipe was located which later tested positive for cocaine.

Dec. 17 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop of a suspicious vehicle near York and Lake at around 7:38 p.m., Ryan A. Busse, 31, of McHenry, was found to be in possession of heroin, crack cocaine, a used hypodermic syringe and a spoon with heroin residue. Busse was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a hypodermic syringe and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said that while an officer was on patrol in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 8:45 p.m., the officer made contact with Rafael A. Guzman, 29, of Miami Beach, Fla., and detected a strong odor of burnt cannabis coming from him. Guzman was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sidney Williams, 21, of Harvey, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and York at around 2:08 a.m.

Telly Berry Wright, 18, of Elgin, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and a warning for no front license plate subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Butterfield at around 5:18 p.m. Danielle s. Wright, 18, of Bellwood, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis.

Dec. 15 Ashley Anderson, 31, of Villa Park, was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, no valid registration, no rear registration plate light and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Grantley and Highland at around 11:46 p.m.

Police said Anderson was found to be in possession of heroin and crack cocaine.

Brandon Parks, 18, of Addison, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident near North and Route 83 at around 2:07 p.m.

Dec. 14 Police said that subsequent to the investigation of a suspicious auto in the 300 block of N Route 83 at around 10:57 p.m., the occupants were found to be in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. Courage Krueger, 19, of Escanaba, Wis., was cited under local ordinance for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. Brandon Dombrowski, 22, of Hermansville, Mich., was found to be in possession of 5.5 pills of Adderall, according to police. Police said Dombrowski admitted to possessing the Adderall and not having a prescription. Dombrowski was charged with one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Dec. 13 Jose Ceballos, 21, of Berwyn; Miguel Angel Jimenez-Salinas, 26, of Northfield; Francisco Ramirez, 19, of Berwyn; and Jocelyn Ramirez, 24, of Justice were issued citations for possession of cannabis in the 400 block of E. Lake at around 7:29 p.m.

Autumn L. Gotting, 32, of Villa Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, no valid registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at around 11:36 p.m.

Dec. 12 Monique Hampton, 28, of Plano, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, expired registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Lake at around 11:12 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances

A complainant at a company in the 300 block of N. York told police at around 1:55 p.m. that the business received an email stating a bomb would detonate at the end of day unless the business transferred $20,000 in Bitcoins to a Bitcoin account. It was learned that numerous other businesses in surrounding counties had also received the exact email. The responding officers searched the premise, but did not locate anything suspicious.

Dec. 19 Police said an officer responded to a retail theft at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 9:23 a.m. where two suspects described as white males were observed concealing items in their jackets and leaving the store without paying for the merchandise. After watching surveillance, it appears some kind of over-the-counter medication and razor blades may have been taken. The suspects were not directly on the camera frame and it is unable to be determined exactly what was taken. The suspects left the area and were unable to be located. One of the suspects was described as being between 20 and 30 years old, around 6-foot tall, 170 pounds, with blue eyes and wearing a black jacket and a gray-and-white winter hat. • According to a story I read in the New York Post, this year’s hot holiday toy was the Poopsie Slime Surprise Unicorn—described as a “doe-eyed doll with loose bowels”—for $49.99. Let’s cut to the chase here: this doll poops glitter. Mom and Dad, please tell me you didn’t stand in line at Target on Black Friday to make this purchase, or force a UPS delivery driver to leave Poopsie Slime on your front doorstep. Here’s hoping your child likes the doll because I couldn’t imagine standing in line to

Fighting the battle against carpet stains

It was a simple spot on the carpet.

Well, if we are being honest it was three spots on the carpet, but who’s counting?

They weren’t the only spots you’d spot on my carpet – if you were looking – but they were in a public spot. Obvious to any visitor entering the living room. Sadly, they’d taken up residence for quite some time. It wasn’t due to lack of diligence on my part. I’d tried carpet spot and stain remover on a few occasions and all that seemed to accomplish was to make the spot disappear for a short time only to return bigger and bolder within a few days.

My spots kept reinventing themselves by performing a reappearing act worthy of Houdini.

They were persistent little buggers, I’d give them that. I might have been proud of them, had they been

• ’Tis the season to be jolly … except when someone who has their nose buried in their smartphone doesn’t bother to look up and nearly walks right into you at the Yorktown Mall.

• Now that Christmas is over—and your car, 4x4 truck or SUV didn’t fly—it’s time for our Rudolph wannabes to take those silly-looking deer antlers off the sides of your vehicle’s front doors, as well as that red nose fastened to the front grill.

• And don’t think I haven’t noticed those of you who display candy canes on the side of each front door and a candy cane on the front grill of your vehicles (or a wreath). Those have got to go, too.

• At least once or twice a week during the holidays, I got calls from people named Scam Likely or Nuisance Likely. I suppose I should add them to my contact list.

• Kudos to those of you who put in the effort to decorate your homes or apartments to the hilt during the holiday season—they look great!

I’m lucky I have enough patience and wherewithal to assemble and decorate a 3-foot artificial tree.

• I tried not to be such a Christmas curmudgeon this season and actually listened to The Holiday Lite periodically the past few weeks (but only at 30-second intervals).

Heck, I even forced myself to listen to callers share their holiday stories with Delilah. (I’m expecting my Man Card to be revoked any day now.) But most every time I turned on The Holiday Lite, the station played the same tunes.

Either “Winter Wonderland (who is Parson Brown?)” “Jingle Bell Rock (what is a jingle horse?) or endless covers of “Sleigh Ride” and “The Christmas Song.”

At a meeting held on Dec. 19, the District 48 Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Jake Chung as the new superintendent of Salt Creek School District 48. He will begin July 1, 2019 succeeding Dr. John Correll who is retiring after 13 years as superintendent in the District.

Dr. Chung has served as assistant superintendent for personnel and planning in Arlington Heights School District 25. He previously served as the principal of South Middle School, also in District 25.

He was also principal of the Hoover Math and Science Academy and the Lincoln Prairie School in Schaumburg School District 54.

Dr. Jake Chung Having served as the Dean’s Advisory Chair for the College of Education at the University of Iowa, Dr. Chung was also a past board member for the University of Iowa Alumni Association. He currently serves as an executive board member on the Midwest Principals’ Center, is the membership chair for the Illinois Association of School Personnel Administrators, and is an active Rotarian.

A graduate of the University of Iowa, where he received a B.A. in Education, Dr. Chung earned his master’s degree from National–Louis University with an emphasis on educational leadership. He received a second master’s degree along with a superintendent’s endorsement from the University of Illinois, and he completed his doctorate through National Louis University.

His wife Kimberly is an early childhood speech-language pathologist for another school district. They reside in Arlington Heights with their two boys, who are in fifth and eighth grade.

“Dr. Chung brings a wealth of experience that will serve our district well,” said Board President Dane Cuny. “Dr. Chung stood out among a group of highly qualified candidates.”

Chung looks forward to serving the Salt Creek School District 48 community.

“It is a tremendous honor to be appointed as the next superintendent,” he said.

“The school district has an amazing reputation and the teachers, staff, students and community members are extremely dedicated to the success of the schools. I look forward to collaborating with stakeholders to positively impact our students.”

The Illinois Association of School Boards assisted the District 48 Board in the search.

Of 58 completed applications, six candidates were interviewed by the Board. Cuny, assisted by Board legal counsel, negotiated a three-year contract on behalf of the Board of Education.

Dr. Chung will begin with a 100-day transition plan during the second semester of 2018-19 and officially begin his duties July 1, 2019.

Guitar master offers benefit concert at Elmhurst College Grammy-nominated guitarist, composer and performer Tommy Emmanuel will perform a special concert on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at Elmhurst College to benefit a scholarship fund named for his family. The concert will be held in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College.

The Emmanuel Family Guitar Endowed Scholarship at Elmhurst College was established earlier this fall in memory of Emmanuel’s sister, Virginia, and his brother Phil. The scholarship was created through the generosity of Fred and Dinah Gretsch and the Gretsch Company and will benefit Elmhurst guitar students. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to this scholarship. The first recipients will be selected in the spring of 2019.

“We’re overwhelmed by the generosity of Tommy Emmanuel and the Gretsch family,” said Peter Griffin, chair of the Department of Music at the College. “It’s an honor for us to house this

scholarship, which will support guitar students at Elmhurst College well into the future.”

The Elmhurst College Gretsch Guitar Ensemble will open the concert.

The Union Pacific Railroad’s “4141” is painted in the colors of Air Force One and the number 4141 is to commemorate President George H.W. Bush as our forty-first President of the United States. This locomotive was used to pull the former President’s funeral train to the George H.W. Bush Library in Texas, where the President was laid to rest. The Union Pacific Railroad will be donating this locomotive to the Presidential Library after it tours the Union Pacific rail network. The engine was seen at the Proviso Railroad Yard (just east of Elmhurst) where employees and their families were allowed an up close viewing.

Epiphany’s Men in Mission brightens holidays for local families Christmas cheer filled Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elmhurst this month, when 70 people attended the church’s annual Men in Mission Christmas Dinner fundraiser on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Proceeds from the event will be used by the Men in Mission organization to assist church members and families in financial

need with food, clothing, toys along with assistance with household bills.

“We had a very successful event,” said Men in Mission Co-Chairman Tom Connolly. “It was all due to the work of our Board members and volunteers and the wonderful generosity of our congregation and the Elmhurst business community.”

DuPage Foundation sees record number of grant requests Awards nearly $270,000 to 30 area not-for-profits

The DuPage Foundation has awarded of nearly $270,000 in Community Needs grants to 30 DuPage County not-for-profits working in the areas of Animal Welfare (new this year!), Arts and Culture, Education, and the Environment. Grants were distributed at the Foundation’s Holiday Open House on Dec. 12.

Among the recipients, the Elmhurst Choral Union, funded by the Mary Eleanor and James M. Wall Fund, received $2500.

The Foundation received 113 applications for the Community Needs Grant Program in 2018, surpassing number of requests from previous years.

“The increase in requests illustrates the growing need for funding that our county’s not-for-profits are facing,” said Barb Szczepaniak, Foundation vice president of programs. “As the number of requests increase, we cannot be more appreciative of our generous donors and fund advisors whose support increases our Community Needs budget.”

Because of recommendations from advisors to its donor-advised funds, the Foundation was able to grant an additional $234,000 to support area organizations’ projects in 2018, Szczepaniak said.

IHSA abolishes football conferences New districting format approved; To be rolled out for 2021 season

Among the Illinois High School Association’s recent member-school approval of 11 amendment proposals in the annual bylaw referendum that ended Dec. 17, is one amendment approval that will signal a monumental change for high-school football beginning in 2021.

Starting in that year, the IHSA is implementing a district scheduling system that will not only abolish the use of conferences in the sport but also will change the playoff process to where the top 4 teams in each district qualify for the playoffs.

“It is a historic change,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson in a news release. “The narrow gap in the voting indicates that there are pros and cons that impact our diverse football-playing membership in a multitude of ways. We hope that it will effectively address conference realignment and scheduling concerns, while helping create long-term sustainability and growth for high school football in the state.”

Beginning in 2021, the IHSA will assign football teams to eight or nine team groupings (i.e. “districts”) based on classification and geography. Previously, schools did not officially know their postseason classification until the completion of the regular season, the IHSA explained.

The IHSA will assign each school’s regular-season games against their district opponents. Districts will be set for two years, allowing home and away scheduling within the district. Schools will have the autonomy to schedule their non-district opponents for any open weeks, but those non-district games will not count toward playoff qualification.

The district assigning process will be similar to how schools are assigned to regionals and sectionals in other IHSA sports and activities, the IHSA pointed out.

“We understand that everyone wants to know what district and class they will be in, but the reality is that we are two years away from being able to tabulate that information,” said Anderson. “Because IHSA districts will operate on a two-year cycle, schools will need the next two years to evaluate their participation.

Some may choose to join co-ops or disband co-ops. Some may choose to play eight-man football. Chicago Public Schools will need to determine what schools it will make play-

off eligible, and we will also have non-boundaried schools that will change classes in that timeframe as they gain or lose multiplier waivers.”

The IHSA Football Advisory Committee and Board of Directors will work in conjunction with the IHSA staff to begin formulating recommendations on the classification cutoffs for football, the association noted.

“Obviously, the ideal situation would be 64 schools in each class, giving each of the eight classes eight districts with eight teams apiece,” said Anderson. “The IHSA Football Advisory Committee, Board of Directors and staff will work together to create policy that addresses situations with more or less than 512 teams.”

Locally, IC Catholic Prep coach Bill Krefft, whose team has won three state championships in a row, did not have any thoughts on the change. “I have no opinion on the matter,” he said.

York coach Mike Fitzgerald spoke about his program no longer being part of the West Suburban Conference and the Silver Division. The WSC has been a model of stability over the years with zero school movement in either division in recent years.

“It’s not ideal,” he said. “A conference like ours, it’s such a stable conference with a very good tradition and some nice history. Unfortunately we’re not going to be able to play the teams we are used to playing.”

Fitzgerald alluded to the subject of what has turned out to be a game of conference musical chairs in the Chicagoland area in recent years. Going back to the stability of the WSC, a check of conference football champions shows all current members of the conference winning either WSC or WSC division championships all the way back to 1960 (Morton and Leyden were identified in earlier years by their campus location; Morton West and East Leyden). Maine East is the last non-current WSC member to win a football championship in the WSC, winning the 1959 crown.

“More and more teams are leaving conferences and conferences are getting reshuffled year after year,” he said. “This will provide stability.

I came from Naperville before coming to York and the DuPage Valley Conference five years ago was stable. Now two years later, they don’t have a full conference. I can see both sides to this. With the West Suburban Conference, we’ve been used to a

Fitzgerald noted with non-conference games in the new format not counting toward playoff positioning, high-school football fans may benefit in the long run.

“With the aspect of non-conference games not affecting the playoff positioning, it’s going to be easier for teams to find non-conference games,” he said. “If there are no ramifications with the playoffs, you are going to see some really good matchups that most people wouldn’t have taken on before. I can see the rationale for this.”

At the same time, Fitzgerald said some teams could see their quality of schedule decrease based on who they are paired with in their district.

“You could be put in a district with groups of schools that could hurt you from a competition and quality-of-game standpoint,” he said. “There are ramifications with this on the other end.”

Looking at the lower levels in a football program, Fitzgerald wondered how that aspect of scheduling will work out, particularly if schools

don’t match up with the same number of teams at the lower levels.

“What if the team you are playing doesn’t have the same number of levels as you?” he asked. “What about JV, sophomore and freshman B? We’re so used to how we do things in the West Suburban Conference with us having these same levels so all the kids get an opportunity to play and get better. You could be looking at more logistical issues with this model.”

And Fitzgerald pointed out, multisport rivalries between schools will be affected as well.

“Now you are not necessarily playing those same teams you play in football,” he said. “This affects all sports.”

“I really don’t have any comment at this time. I’d like an opportunity to learn more on how this will work,” said Addison Trail football coach Paul Parpet Jr. “I currently do not have any thoughts until the district alignment is completed. Everything else is just speculation,” said Fenton coach Matt Lynch.

Willowbrook coach Nick Hildreth, whose team has gone deep into the postseason the last three years, advancing to the state quarterfinals in each of those campaigns, like York’s Fitzgerald, spoke about the abandonment of the conference format in football. Hildreth is a graduate of the Villa Park high school that is part of the West Suburban Conference on the Gold Division side along with fellow district school Addison Trail.

“I am opposed to the change,” said Hildreth. “As a 2000 graduate of Willowbrook I grew up in the West Suburban Conference. I take great pride in the West Suburban Conference and it is the only conference I have ever known. It would be a shame to see some of our great rivalries go away.”

560 IHSA member schools participated in football during the 2018 season. 523 were eligible to qualify for the 2018 IHSA Football Playoffs. The district proposal will not change the IHSA football playoffs materially, as there will continue to be eight postseason classes with 32 qualifiers per class.

Under the current playoff system in effect through the 2020 football season, conference champions in eligible conferences and any eligible team that wins six, seven, eight or nine regular-season games automatically qualifies for the playoff field.

A tie-breaker system determines which five-win teams make the field.

Beginning in 2021, the top four teams in each of the eight districts will determine the playoff qualifiers for that class.

“This is the third time (2009, 2014) that a football district proposal has been brought forward to our membership and each time the support has grown,” said Anderson. “It is based on a concept that other state high school associations have used successfully, and we are committed to doing our part to make it successful here in Illinois. The beauty of our legislative system is that our member schools will have input in that process and the ability to offer recommendations on tweaks and changes as we progress.”

A more definitive timeline on the future release dates of districts and schedules will be developed in conjunction with the IHSA Football Advisory Committee over the course of the 2019-20 school year.

said Doran. “It’s the thing we have done the best to this point. It’s something where we have created a lot of offense with our defense. We have turned people over more this year than we ever have. A lot of that has to do with the fact we have kids who are fast and smart and cover a lot of ground. We call it air time when the ball is in the air. They cover up a lot of ground and it’s led to a lot of good scoring opportunities for us.”

Doran added York’s defense has stepped up to the plate against opponents of all types. “We’re creating a lot of turnovers on defense against good people,” he said. “I feel like our schedule is pretty strong. You look at the people we are playing against, they all have similar records. These are teams that are kind of similar to ourselves. We played Willowbrook, Addison Trail, Glenbard West and Benet Academy, those all were teams with one or two losses at the time we played them.”

Sam Walsh, Erik Cohn, Nate Shockey and Nick Kosich are the

four players Doran alluded to being in that 13-point-per game area. “It makes it hard to single out one guy when you have others contributing and stepping up,” he said.

John Milling is York’s fifth starter and the team also receives jolts off the bench from Hassan Iqbal, Mike Pedote and Jeff Grace.

“John Milling is our fifth starter and gives us some really good intangibles out there,” said Doran.

“Hasan, Mike and Jeff have been really good, especially with the behind-the-scenes stuff. They are part of the second team that helps us prepare for our opponents. Those guys have done as good a job as we’ve ever had here. They play hard and are a big part of our success at this point, helping that first team get ready for whoever we play.”

York played Tinley Park Andrew Wednesday in the first round of the Tosh Holiday Classic at York. The 32-team tournament continues today, tomorrow, Saturday and concludes New Year’s Eve.

IC Catholic Prep bowling team continues to make progress York girls keglers clean up at West Aurora; JV wins team title

The IC Catholic Prep boys bowling team showed more signs of improvement during a recent dual match against Hinsdale South.

The Knights lost 2,286-2,090, but received a pair of strong individual performances from Peter Sykora and Ian Rickert. Sykora had both the team’s high series at 538 and high game at 201. Rickert was right there as well with a 509 series that included a 195 high game.

“The team is learning not to leave too many open frames and we’re learning how to pick up spares,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Jeff Fredrickson.

In addition to Sykora and Rickert, the team is receiving key contributions from Jack O’Brien and Demetri Daviantis. “Jack, Peter, Ian and Demetri have been pretty consistent for us,” said Fredrickson.

The Knights returned to action earlier this week at the Glenbard East tournament.

York girls bowling The York girls bowling program had a banner day at the recent West Aurora invitational.

The Dukes varsity team took second in the field, while the York JV team won the JV tournament team title.

On the varsity level, York was second overall with a 5,178 total pinfall for six games.

Krystyna Panek won the varsity individual title with an 1,172 tally.

She had high games of 245, 215, 189 and 185. Panek turned it up after the lunch break with a 635 series (245, 215, 175).

Rose Klinger placed ninth with a score of 1,037 that included high games of 214 and 185.

Ruby Noel was right behind Klinger with a 1,034 series that included high games of 190 (times 3) and 181. Noel rolled identical 190 games in all games after the lunch break.

Lauren Rickenbrode was 14th overall with a 1,002 series with high games of 199 and 176. Caroline Collins finished 20th with a 933 series that included a 199 high game.

York had high games as a team of 977 and 939.

The York JV team won the team title going away. The Dukes’ JV squad had a 4,537 score, Making the second-place finisher of 4,191 pale in comparison.

York also had all of its bowlers at the JV level place eighth or better in the individual standings.

Madeline Mountcastle won the JV individual title with a 1,012 series.

Khloe Lesus was third at 940, while Kara Jensen was fourth at 905. Emily Catalano had an 835 series, which placed sixth and Maggie Clink took eighth with an 818 series.

On the high-game front in the JV competition, Mountcastle had high games of 193, 184 and 181. Lesus had high games of 188 and 171, while Jensen had high games of 170 and 168. Clink had high games of 164 and 163, while Catalano had a high game of 161. Mountcastle rolled a 513 series after the lunch break to help lead the Dukes to the team win.

Final weeks for ‘Hometown Holiday: It’s a Wonderful Life in Elmhurst’ In the summer of 1946, Oscar-winning director Frank Capra and his Oscar-nominated leading man Jimmy Stewart had both returned to Hollywood filmmaking after serving during World War II. Remembering the pair’s pre-war hit, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” the public eagerly awaited the film, titled “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The film received solid—if not exactly glowing—reviews when it opened in December of 1946. It received no Academy Awards even though it was nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. Although both Capra and Stewart considered it among their finest work, the movie barely made enough at the box office to pay for itself and the financial stress eventually sank director Capra’s Liberty Studios.

How then did this solid-yet-unremarkable film become an enduring classic more than 70 years later? Today, it is considered by many to be among the best American films ever made, and

Conservation leader finishes master’s studies Elmhurst resident Emily Vana has been applying the tools of science, education and conservation to become a leader in the conservation community.

In mid-December 2018, Vana is expected to conclude her master’s course of study earning a Master of Arts (MA) in Biology from Miami University through Project Dragonfly.

Since joining the Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) master’s in 2016, Vana has traveled to India and has taken courses on the web from Miami University while also participating in unique learning experiences on Chicago Zoological Society/Brookfield Zoo grounds and in natural settings around Illinois.

Vana is a behavioral technician at the Center for Autism and Related Disorders.

Miami University’s Project Dragonfly reaches millions of people each year through inquiry-driven learning media, public exhibits and graduate programs worldwide.

Elmhurst native shines at National Golf Invitational Imagine being one of the last players to make the golf team your freshmen year of high school and then a few years later in college placing in the top 15 during a national invitational.

That’s the story of Bradley University sophomore Mitchell Russell.

Russell currently serves as the president of Club Golf at Bradley. During the club’s most recent tournament in Myrtle Beach, So. Carolina, Russell tied for 14th place out of 130 players.

The course at Barefoot Resort & Golf ranks as one of the best in the state.

The NCCGA National Invitational is a two-day, 36-hole event. Russell shot a 79 on day one and a 75 on day two, for a two-day score of 154.

In his role as club president, Russell is in charge of recruiting new players, encouraging current team members and communicating with other university club presidents to coordinate local and national golf tournaments.

something other than a spot on the carpet. I enjoy magic and value persistence – in people, not carpet stains.

My work thus far had not yielded the results I wanted. It was time to get tough – to eschew the commercial cleaners and go rogue. I went to my go-to: Google. Lots of blogs have lots of advice about stubborn carpet stains but many of them had a common thread: baking soda and vinegar.

When combined, baking soda and vinegar have a chemical reaction, which apparently removes stains and can freshen everything from your dishwasher to coffee pot. In my case, I needed them to work on my carpet.

Different bloggers had different techniques for application of the vinegar and soda. Some said to sprinkle the soda first; others advised starting with vinegar and a third

group suggested making a paste of the two and scrubbing that into the stain. I randomly picked the soda-first method and went to work.

I covered the stains with the soda and then sprinkled with a vinegar and water mixture until the area was damp. Then – according to the expert blogger – I waited for the area to dry.

Supposedly I would simply vacuum up the residue (and stain) in a few hours.

If you know me, you know that didn’t work. Nothing is ever that easy.

When dry, my patches were hard clumps of dried baking soda stuck to my carpet. I decided to go completely off the grid and follow my gut by redousing the area with more vinegarwater solution. I set to fill my spray bottle and grabbed the vinegar. Except it wasn’t vinegar.

It was ammonia.

I’d sprayed ammonia onto the soda on my carpet. That explains things, Lucy.

So. I took another looksy under the kitchen sink and found the real vinegar and dampened my stains with the right stuff. Rinse. Repeat. I’m on round three – so far. The vinegar is working – I think, I hope. The spots are relenting – I think I hope. I’ll know in a day or two, after another round or two. In the meantime I’m spraying and blotting. Spraying and blotting.

And thinking about replacing the carpet – with hardwood.
