About 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, the Elmhurst Public Library had to be evacuated and was placed on lockdown due to an unknown threat.

Police and fire officials were on the scene immediately, some with automatic rifles, securing the area and urging drivers to avoid using the surrounding streets.

Elmhurst squads were assisted by the Bensenville Police Department as well as Oak Brook, which brought its canine unit to help clear the building. One person on the scene was

wearing an FBI jacket.

By Saturday afternoon, it was learned the library had fallen victim to a “swatting” prank, which brings out a SWAT team, hence the name.

Swatting refers to the act of making a hoax call to 9-1-1 to report an emergency situation that does not exist.

miles and miles away, sometimes in a different state.

“The people who perpetrate this are looking for a tactical response,” FBI Special Agent John Bennett was quoted as saying following a similar incident that took place in Wichita.

“They want to see armed officers, they want to see a bomb [squad], dogs, helicopters, that’s all part of

the fun they see in this. It can be very devastating.”

The incident in Wichita, during which someone was actually shot and killed, initiated from a criminal suspect in Los Angeles. Because the threats are made over the Internet, usually on social media, police say it is fairly easy to track down the perpetrator.

Dec. 8 Police said officers responded to a domestic investigation in the 500 block of W. St. Charles at around 10:37 p.m. Upon arrival, it was learned the suspect was upset over having a bad hockey game. The suspect threatened the victim with a hockey stick. The victim will follow up with health care providers in the morning.

Dec. 8 Police said officers responded to the report of an allegedly intoxicated female walking around inside a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:01 p.m. Maria Jimenez, 42, of Addison, was located, arrested and charged with disorderly conduct/public intoxication.

Dec. 12 Police said officers responded to a report of domestic at around 8:35 a.m. The victim took the suspect’s phone from her and allegedly pushed a couch into the victim in an attempt to take back her phone.

Dec. 10 Beatriz I. Flores Lopez, 25, of Melrose Park, was charged with DUI, improper lane

Dec. 12 Monique Hampton, 28, of Plano, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, expired registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Lake at around 11:12 p.m.

Iyad Oweineh, 26, of Bensenville, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, no valid insurance, suspended registration for non-insurance, failure to signal and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Quarry at around 5:23 p.m.

Dec. 11 Shahed Kahn, 57, of Elmhurst, was charged with possession of a controlled substance near Third and West at around 2:47 p.m. Police said officers responded for the report of a hit and run traffic crash. Kahn was located and, according to police, was found to be in possession of cocaine, suspected cannabis, cannabis grinders, razor blades and a dollar bill covered with a white powdery substance.

Felix O. Rodriguez, 27, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 2:46 a.m.

Dec. 7 Brandon M. Glover, 36, of Gary, Ind., was charged with possession of cannabis, no valid driver’s license and no registration subsequent to a traffic stop near North and I-290 at around 12:24 a.m.

Dec. 6 Police said that subsequent to a traffic crash near S. York and S. Palmer Drive at around 3 p.m., Demetrius C. Orr, 20, of Villa Park was found to have a warrant. During a search of the vehicle, a plastic baggie containing 66 tablets of Xanax® was located, according to police.

Police said Orr admitted to purchasing, consuming and selling the Xanax. He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver.

Suspicious circumstances

Dec. 7 A complainant in the 300 block of N. Ferndale told police at around 11:34 a.m. that an unknown suspect described as a white male came to her door asking if he could check to see if her pipes were frozen. The unknown male attempted to push his way into the house; however, the complainant was able to push the door closed before entry was made. The suspect left the area in a dark gray sedan.

Dec. 1-Dec. 7 A victim who resides in Montana, told police at around 9:30 a.m. that he recently sent a $5,000 cashier’s check after receiving an email that he would receive $800,000 in return. The victim also reported he has sent $10,000 in Amazon Gift Cards to that same address over the past week. He now believes he is being scammed.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/ forgery/deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Nov. 27-Dec. 12 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of N. Willow at around 4:38 p.m. Police said a victim was notified by Fed-Ex that a package addressed to him was scheduled to be shipped to a Walgreens instead of his residence. The victim was not expecting any packages. When the victim inspected his credit card statement, he discovered eight fraudulent charges.

Dec. 11 Theft was reported in the 300 block of Yorkfield at around 10:39 a.m. A victim told police that after leaving a party, he was unable to locate his cell phone. The following morning, he was able to track his phone using an application, which showed it was in Palos Hills.

Identity theft was reported in the 900 block of S. Prospect at around 5:12 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) used a fraudulent photo ID and the victim’s Social Security number to make an unauthorized purchase on her credit card.

Dec. 8-Dec. 10 A victim in the 600 block of Edgewood told police that when he returned home from school, he found his money box was left open and cash was missing. An investigation is pending.

Dec. 8 Theft was reported in the 800 block of Swain at around 8:28 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect fraudulently used her credit card information and purchased merchandise.

Nov. 14-Dec. 10 Identity theft was reported in the 400 block of S. Kenilworth. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used her personal information to open a fraudulent Sprint cell phone account sometime between the above dates.

Nov. 1-Dec. 10 A complaint at a restaurant in the 600 block of W. North told police that the business had 11 suspicious orders from two similar addresses in Bellwood between the above dates. The suspect(s) used multiple credit card numbers and requested the delivery driver to provide cash back, in exchange for a large tip to be left on the credit card. On two separate occasions, a delivery driver gave cash to the suspect(s).

One of the suspects was described as a black male in his early 20s, 5’11”, average build with a short afro and wearing a home arrest ankle monitor.

Dec. 7-Dec. 9 Theft was reported in the 800 block of S. Route 83. A victim told police that he parked his trailer at the storage facility and an unknown suspect(s) removed it from the property without his permission sometime between the above dates. The trailer was located parked off a roadway in Oakbrook Terrace and the trailer’s harness was damaged.

Dec. 8 Police said officers responded to a report of identity theft in the 200 block of S. Cottage Hill at around 11:34 a.m. The victim told police her personal information was used to open a “Smartpay leasing” phone service line. The victim was notified by Life Lock that an AT&T account was also opened in her name.

Villa Park house fire claims a life, injures 3 Injured includes two first responders

Villa Park and surrounding area fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 300 block of North Lincoln Ave. at about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15.

According to a Villa Park Police Dept. release, one person in the single-family residence was declared dead at the scene and another was transported to Elmhurst Hospital with unspecified, but non-life threatening, injuries. Names of the victims had not been released as of press time.

Two emergency responders were also injured during the fire. Reports indicated the injured officers were among the first on the scene and suffered injuries while trying to rescue the home’s residents. Both injuries were minor and the officers were treated at the hospital and released the same day, according to Fire Dept. officials.

The Villa Park Police Dept. and the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force are investigating the cause of the fire.

The smoke was seen for miles as a Commonwealth Edison pickup truck was engulfed in flames in Addison over the past weekend. The Addison Fire Department was hindered by the boggy ground and a brush truck had to be brought in from the Bloomingdale Fire Department to assist. The Ford F-150 ECO was a total loss. Commonwealth Edison high voltage power poles cross the swamp and it is believed that a lineman was inspecting the towers for damage caused by the recent blizzard when he became stuck along the power company’s right of way. This was not confirmed at press time.

Do you know you live near a secret railroad?

[Editor’s note: Noted historian, teacher and author Glennette Tillie Turner explains the Underground Railroad Trail through Illinois in honor of the 200th anniversary of the state of Illinois.]

The Illinois Bicentennial is a catalyst for experiencing a new Sense of Place. When you travel on many of the state’s highways, railroads and waterways, you are retracing routes of the historic Illinois Underground Railroad.

If you drive along a local road, ride on Amtrak or a commuter train, or hike along a riverbank you may be in, or possibly near, a location where there was Underground Railroad activity. Thinking of this can give you a heightened sense of appreciation and connectedness to the history that may have happened there.

railroads and rivers that we travel today were traveled by Freedom Seekers (aka as “passengers”). The Freedom Seekers were enslaved Africans who had escaped from bondage in the slave state of Missouri. They may have watched and waited for years for just the opportune moment to escape. Or acted on short notice if they learned that they were about to be sold.

In any event they set out for their long dangerous journey to reach Illinois and perhaps Canada. No one knows how many drowned or became victims of bitter cold, quicksand, disease, snakebites, hunger or were captured and taken

back into slavery.

If they could reach and cross the Mighty Mississippi River they may have entered Illinois at Chester, Alton, Quincy, Brooklyn (aka Lovejoy) or Rock Island.

The Quincy route was called the Number One route. It passed through Mendon, Plymouth, Galesburg, Princeton and Ottawa.

Freedom Seekers who had escaped from Kentucky plantations crossed the Ohio River to reach Cairo.

Early roads and railroads led from river cities toward Chicago—the terminus of the Illinois Underground Railroad.

Many Freedom Seekers made most or all of their journey on foot.

Some were befriended by black or white Underground Railroad workers; some of whom may have transported them in wagons concealed underneath vegetables they were taking to market.

Occasionally they were able to travel on actual railroads.

The upside of snoring

In our culture we don’t usually brag about snoring. It isn’t a skill we covet. It isn’t seen as a skill at all, but an embarrassing behavior beyond our control. Sort of like stinky feet or public flatulence.

I’m here today to suggest we come out from under the covers and embrace the sleepy vibrato known as snoring. When you look at it from a logical perspective, snoring can actually be perceived as a good thing.

Before I go off on my tangent regarding the simplistic bliss of snoring, I’ll add a disclaimer here.

Snoring is most often harmless, albeit loud. But in some instances it can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, which is a condition that reduces airflow to the lungs and often requires medical attention.

Sleep apnea is not good or funny and should not be confused with harmless snoring, which can be both.

Let’s look at it from a logical perspective.

First the obvious: snoring means you are breathing. When you are breathing you are alive. If you are not alive you are dead. I believe the choice is clear.

In a similar line of thinking, snoring means you are sleeping.

People don’t snore when they are awake. Sleep is a good thing – unless you are operating heavy machinery.

Further, if you are sleeping you

are relaxed. Relaxation is a good thing. It reduces muscle tension, decreases of stress and anxiety and lowers your heart rate and blood pressure. No one can argue with relaxation – mostly because he’s too relaxed to argue back.

You don’t have to snore yourself to reap the benefits. Lying next to a snorer is also a good thing. It means you have someone to sleep next to you. This not only helps keep you warm at night, it can give you a companion to spend time with during the day when you are both awake. This works just as well if the companion is human, canine or feline. Animals are just as competent at snoring as humans – more so, depending on the Labrador.

If you are lucky, sleeping next to someone means you are cozying up to them and they are most likely someone you love. Cozying up is a good thing. Love is not; it is a great thing.

To be fair, not everything about snoring is lollipops and roses.

Research says it’s a factor in sleep deprivation – and not just for the person lying next to the snorer.

They say snorers themselves can be sleep deprived. I suppose if you snore loud enough you just might wake yourself up – hence the depravity.

business – in the truest of business sense. Looking for a reprieve from snoring? Some of your options include: nasal strips, throat exercises, a special pillow, a mask, dental appliances and medical treatments including surgery. Or you could take it off the grid, or at least below the equator. Some advocate you can combat snoring by playing an Australian windpipe instrument known as the didgeridoo.

I don’t think I’d advise it. I’m not even sure how to pronounce didgeridoo, much less play it.

B.G. Roots, surveyor for the Illinois Central Railroad, had tracks placed on its property in Tamaora, hid Freedom Seekers in empty boxcars, then hitched the boxcars on Chicago-bound trains. (The CB&Q and the IC railroads are now part of the Metra commuter lines.)

Rivers were not the only useful waterways. Freedom Seekers followed “water highways” such as creeks, streams and the I & M Canal where they walked along the tow path through Lockport, Joliet and Romeoville.

It was significant that the terminus of the Illinois Underground Railroad was the very place where Haitian born Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, founder of Chicago, had established his trading post years before.

When Freedoms Seekers reached Chicago they could profit from their own labor, having done all kinds of work when they were enslaved.

This was one of the great benefits of freedom. They found and participated in cooperative efforts of people of different religions, races, and incomes.

Freedom Seekers passed through Downers Grove, Wheaton, Glen

Ellyn, Lombard and other west suburban towns before reaching Chicago from the west. If they approached from the south they may have stopped at Underground Railroad stations in Crete, Plainfield, New Lenox or Frankfort.

However, the Freedom Seekers weren’t the only people who knew Chicago was the terminus.

Slave catchers knew it too.

Because of this, rather than go into the city some Freedom Seekers turned eastward in the Calumet area and followed the Sauk Trail toward Indiana, perhaps stopping at the Jon Ton Farm near present-day Altgeld Gardens. Others went northward along the DesPlaines River through Maywood, Libertyville, Gurnee or Millburn. Still others followed Lake Michigan toward Evanston, Lake Forest, Waukegan, and other northern suburbs.

So let the Bicentennial serve as a catalyst in finding a new personal meaning in living in Illinois. As you travel the state’s highways, railroads, and waterways, take time to visit your local library or historical society. Check to see if there was Underground Railroad/ abolitionist/antislavery activity nearby. You may be pleasantly surprised and experience a new Sense of Place as the result of what you discover!

Everyone needs good work colleagues; columnist appreciates hers As 2018 comes to a close, I would like to thank my work colleagues.

They have been with me through another glorious year, and this gal could not ask for better mates. We thought about having an office party, but their offerings would be recipes and how-to videos and music and pictures of cookies. I would be the only one eating the goodies so we decided against a potluck.

These office mates - Google, Facebook, Pandora, YouTube, and Word - are always there for me, day in and day out, any hour of the day round the clock. Truth be told, the first four are adept at keeping me distracted from my steady work partner, Word.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m grateful for their companionship. They always are at the ready with a good joke, pun, or silly or heartwarming story. And as we all know, one leads to another. And another. And another. Before you know it, time has zipped by and it’s time for a snack.

Working from home allows me freedom and flexibility. I eat what I want when I want. I crank whatever tunes I want. I talk to who I want when I want. There is no boss over my shoulder, no overly chatty coworker in the next cubicle, and no one stinking up the breakroom with leftovers in the microware.

I have the best of all worlds.

There are people, human people, in my day too. My client meetings are sometimes in person, sometimes on the phone, and sometimes on the computer via Skype or zoom. I also spend a lot of time at my desk, just me and ever-patient Word.

History Museum’s Hometown Holiday: It’s a Wonderful Life in Elmhurst

A ‘sweet collection’ for the troops

Grateful for uneaten Halloween candy is Tracy Morser, a member of the group Military Mama Network, who got some sweet help from 4-year-olds at Bethel Learning Center in Elmhurst recently. The children donated their uneaten Halloween candy to the organization, which, Morser says, will use the candy as “packing peanuts” for packages sent to the troops.

In the summer of 1946, Oscar-winning director Frank Capra and his Oscar-nominated leading man Jimmy Stewart had both returned to Hollywood filmmaking after serving during World War II. Remembering the pair’s pre-war hit, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” the public eagerly awaited the film, titled “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The film received solid—if not exactly glowing—reviews when it opened in December of 1946. It received no Academy Awards even though it was nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor.

Although both Capra and Stewart considered it among their finest work, the movie barely made enough at the box office to pay for itself and the financial stress eventually sank director Capra’s Liberty Studios.

How then did this solid-yet-unremarkable film become an enduring classic more than 70 years later? Today, it is considered by many to be among the best American films ever made, and it has become a cherished holiday tradition to watch it year after year. Perhaps it’s the movie’s realistic and bittersweet themes of friendship, family, hope, and dreams that ring true—or maybe it’s the sentiment that each person’s life can touch so many others that still resonates today as it did in 1946.

The Elmhurst History Museum presents “Hometown Holiday: It’s a Wonderful Life in Elmhurst,” an original exhibit that explores the making of the film, the lives of the people who made it, and its journey from obscurity to classic. The key focal point of the exhibit is a private collec-

tion on loan from Chicago-area collector Richard Goodson that includes a diverse array of rare photos, advertisements, lobby cards, memorabilia and more to tell the story of “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The exhibit, which is sponsored by Lakeside Bank, shares interesting facts about the film through reminiscences of the cast and crew, personal letters, behindthe-scenes photos, and other related materials. An original copy of Philip VanDoren Stern’s short story, “The Greatest Gift,” which the movie script was based on, is also featured.

The challenges of filming a holiday movie in California during summertime are detailed, as well as the careers of the many memorable character actors who played a part in the movie. Post-World War II holiday-themed items from the Elmhurst History Museum’s collection are also on display including toys and ads from former Elmhurst merchants, handmade ornaments from Dresden, Germany, and holiday cards created by former Elmhurst resident Lee Sturges, a well-known artist and etcher.

Take a nostalgic trip to Bedford Falls with the latest exhibit from the Elmhurst History Museum. “Hometown Holiday: It’s a Wonderful Life in Elmhurst” is open through January 6, 2019.

The Elmhurst History Museum’s hours are Sunday and Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is free, and limited free parking is available.

Garden Club decorates library for season This year marks more than 66 years that the Elmhurst Garden Club (EGC) has festooned the Elmhurst Public Library with holiday cheer.

During the 1940s, the EGC would offer the library, then located in the Wilder Mansion, several arrangements garnered from an annual holiday floral event. Then, beginning in 1952, the Club expanded their holiday decorations to include theme display case arrangements, holiday trim throughout, and one or two decorated trees. The club has continued and expanded their holiday decorating tradition since that time to the current library, which opened in 2003.

This year, on December 5, about two dozen volunteers decorated several sections of the library with trees filled with shiny bobbles, ornaments, garlands, bows and bells. On the main floor, decorated trees are located in the main lobby and the children’s and middle school sections. The second floor includes a tree near the fireplace, one near the study rooms, three silver trees near the computer section, and wall trees with magnetic ornaments in the teen section. Holiday garlands and displays are located throughout and also at the main entrance and circulation desks. The transformation of the library for the holidays is a great outlet for creative

Kay McKeen, executive director of School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE), with present the program. In 1991, McKeen started the Book Rescue Program that kept gently-used text and reference books from going into landfills and instead, put them into the hands of those who needed them. McKeen will speak about recycling and other environmental issues and concerns.

The program is free and open to the public.

Real Estate/Business County to host info meetings for Human Services Grants in January DuPage County will host two informational meetings in January for local nonprofit organizations interested in applying for a grant through the Human Services Grant Fund (HSGF).

The meetings will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 4 and 10:30 a.m. Jan. 10 in Room 3-500B of the DuPage County JTK Administration Building, 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. Organizations must send a representative to one of the two mandatory meetings in order to apply for the grant.

DuPage created the Human Services Grant Fund to assist organizations that serve County residents in need. This year, the fund will distribute $900,000 to grant recipients. The grants are available to organizations that help families achieve independence, ensure the protection of children and other vulnerable residents and maximize prevention opportunities to strengthen families’ well-being and stability. In the previous grant year, more than 76,856 people received assistance. The aver-

age grant award in 2018 was $16,700, with a minimum award of $3,757 and a maximum award of $44,000.

The Human Services Grant Fund is a web-based program. For access to the portal, attendance at one of the mandatory meetings is required.

Free guide helps Illinois consumers advocate for themselves with big utilities

As a public service to the people of Illinois, the Citizens Utility Board (CUB) released a free online guide last week that clearly explains the rules that govern gas and electric companies, so consumers can advocate for themselves against the big utilities, avoid scams, and save money on their energy bills.

CUB’s Gas and Electric Guide: A handbook for residential utility

customers in Illinois can be ordered at CitizensUtilityBoard.org .

It was researched and written by CUB experts who tackle thousands of complaints and questions from Illinois utility customers each year.

“There is no other place in Illinois where you can get a detailed, easy-to-understand outline of your rights as a gas and electric customer, as well as helpful tips,” CUB

Executive Director David Kolata said. “If you want to avoid scams and advocate for yourself against the big utilities, you have to educate yourself, and that’s why this handy guide should be required reading.

“This guide is meant to be a utility customer’s best friend. Nobody should feel powerless facing the big utilities.”

Crown Battery moves branch distribution center to new location Crown Battery, a leading manufacturer of 99% recyclable batteries, announced last week that it would be moving its Chicagoland SLI distribution center from Villa Park to Lombard. The new location opened for business on Friday, Dec. 14.

Local clinic’s sock drive gathers almost 1100+ pairs for DuPage homeless Prairie Path Foot & Ankle Clinic, located at 136 Vallette St, #2, hosted its annual Sock Drive throughout the month of November to benefit the local homeless served

by DuPage PADS. The goal was to collect 750 pairs of socks, each to be matched with a pair of thermal socks by Prairie Path Foot & Ankle Clinic, doubling the impact of the collection. Residents responded with 1095 donated pairs of socks. All 2190 pairs of socks were delivered to DuPage PADS in Wheaton on Monday, Dec. 10.

“We are super excited about this donation and, together with the community, we are keeping lots of feet warm!” said Dr.

Misty McNeill.

The Sock Drive Challenge was helped additionally this year by a partnership with Conrad Fischer Elementary School during the last week of November.

“I think it will really motivate the kids to know that the first 250 pairs we collect will be doubled,” said Sara Dennison, parent organizer of the effort at Fischer School.

“That motivation showed up as the students collected and then brought the socks donated to Prairie Path Foot & Ankle Clinic to be matched.”

Spirito! Singers performs ‘What Sweeter Music’ holiday concert

Spirito! Singers recently ushered in the Holiday Season with their 2018 Winter Concert, “What Sweeter Music.” The performance featured the Spirito! Bravura and Ragazze Ensembles, the Men of Spirito! along with an appearance by members of the Agape Ringers, Chicago’s premier handbell choir.

The concert took place on Dec. 1 & 2 at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church and played to a full house.

Spirito! also held a book drive at each con-

cert as part of a service project for Bernie’s Book Bank, Chicago’s largest provider of books to low-income children.

“Spirito! is first and foremost a choral organization, but service is an important part of our mission,” said Mary Jean Adkins, Spirito!

Executive Director. “Each year we present a Service Award to a community member who is dedicated to service and volunteerism and we feel is a great role model for our singers.

We then perform a service project for a chari-

ty that’s important to the recipient as a thankyou. This year’s winner, Terri Hemmert of WXRT [Radio] asked that we support Bernie’s Book Bank- and we’re really happy to oblige.”

The Ragazze Ensemble will also volunteer at Bernie’s Book Bank as part of their Spring Tour in April.

Spirito! Singers is an auditioned choir located in Chicago’s western suburbs. It’s comprised of two distinct treble ensembles of 5th grade – 12th grade girls, representing 30 communities and 61 schools. Spirito! also proudly presents the Men of Spirito!, an ensemble for men 18 years of age and older.

Hospital Foundation’s 42nd Reindeer Route deemed successful The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation held its 42nd annual Reindeer Route Housewalk on Friday, Dec. 7. The event, sponsored by the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Medical Staff, Jel Sert Company and SEI Institutional Group, featured seven Elmhurst homes decorated for the holidays by local florists.

A portion of the proceeds from the

Housewalk will benefit the Teen Volunteer Health Profession Scholarship fund, which includes the Marilyn A. Graber Teen Scholarship. The scholarships are for EMH teen volunteers who plan to pursue a career in healthcare.

Dec. 7 Police said officers responded to a deceptive practice report in the 600 block of W. North at around 1:28 p.m.

The complainant told police that a suspect had cashed a check in 2016 with insufficient funds and was now in the business attempting to cash another check.

Police said a reporting officer at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North observed the suspects in a vehicle at the above location. One suspect went inside and was then followed out by the store manager. The vehicle left and was stopped by the reporting officer.

Symphony offers German Baroque concert at Mayslake Warm up a frosty January afternoon in a beautiful setting when the Elmhurst Symphony Musicians in Performance at Mayslake series, under the baton of Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop, continues its 2018-19 season with a concert of Baroque favorites on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 2:30 p.m. at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook.

“Trumpet Glory: German Baroque Masters” features soloists from the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra who will play Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba and Concerto Gros-

York boys basketball team defeats Addison Trail York girls basketball team gets 10th win of season against Bolingbrook

The red-hot start for the York boys basketball team continued with a 7145 West Suburban Conference crossover win against Addison Trail.

The victory boosted York to 7-1 overall. The Dukes are 2-0 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play.

York led 18-13 after the first quarter and then used a 15-6 run in the second quarter to pull away at 33-19 at halftime. York scored 23 points in the fourth quarter.

Nate Shockey led the Dukes with 18 points. He made three 3-pointers and also had four steals and three as-

sists. Erik Cohn added 17 points and connected on 5 of his 6 three-point tries. Sam Walsh had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, while John Milling had six points and four steals.

York hit 14 of 24 three-point tries and attempted only one free throw in the game. York forced Addison Trail into 19 turnovers.

Through eight games, York was averaging 58.6 points a contest while allowing only 48.8 points a game.

York has four players averaging double figures in scoring with Walsh at 13.4 points per game, Cohn at 13.3, Kosich at 11.4 and Shockey at 10.6.

Cohn is the team leader in 3-point-

ers made with 19, while Kosich has 12 and Shockey has nine. Cohn was leading the team in free-throw shooting at .692 (9-for-13), while Shockey was at .667 with 14 of 21 from the line.

Cohn was tops in rebounding at 3.9, while Walsh is at 3.6. Kosich is the team leader in assists at 20 (against only 12 turnovers) and is averaging 3.3 rebounds. Shockey was leading the team in steals with 20.

Kosich, Milling and Cohn each had 16, while Walsh had 15.

York has forced opponents into 145 turnovers through eight games (18.1 per game).

York girls basketball

The York girls basketball team also continued its winning ways with a recent 65-58 victory over Bolingbrook in the Benet Academy-Naperville North quad at Benet in Lisle.

The win was York’s 10th of the season.

York led 15-9 after the first quarter and 34-24 at halftime. Bolingbrook held a slight 34-31 edge against the Dukes in the second half.

Sara Krissinger led York with 17 points. She scored six points in the fourth quarter and made seven free throws in the game.

Kaitlyn Kjome added 10 points, while Sydney Molis had nine points and made five free throws. Kathleen

Levins added eight points, while Sydney Fuglsang had seven points to lead a balanced York scoring attack.

Carley Schwartz had five points, including one 3-pointer. York was 18 of 32 from the free-throw line.

In earlier action, the Dukes lost 5640 to Benet Academy and dropped a 53-47 West Suburban Conference Silver Division game to Glenbard West. York is 4-1 in WSC Silver play through five league contests and 10-3 overall.

York is back at the Benet-Naperville North quad Friday against Naperville North and will then open play in the Gurnee Warren Christmas tournament on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Two more wins for Timothy Christian girls basketball team Trojans winners of six games in a row

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team has fashioned itself quite a winning streak.

The Trojans recorded recent wins against Ridgewood and Wheaton Academy to up their winning streak to six games in a row. Timothy’s last loss was to Chicago Christian (4427).

The two wins put the Trojans at 9-2 overall and 5-1 in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play with that only league setback coming to Chicago Christian.

In a 56-31 win against Ridgewood, Timothy scored 17 points in the first quarter, 14 in the second and

finished up with 16 in the fourth.

Sureya Alex led the Trojans with 20 points to go with seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists. She shot 8-for-15 from the field and 2-for-4 from the 3-point line.

Jordyn Strube had 15 points and 10 rebounds and hit one 3-pointer.

Sarah Carstensen added 12 points and 16 rebounds to go with four blocked shots. She was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Lauren Gehrke chipped in five rebounds.

“Against Ridgewood we won with our offense,” said Timothy coach Mark Baumbach. “Our defense, which is a work in progress, was not exceptional, but our offense

was tremendous. We had a lot of fast-break and transition points.

We didn’t have much of a problem scoring. Sureya scored consistently every quarter. She was scoring five or six points a quarter and whenever we needed a basket she would get us one.”

Timothy made it six wins in a row after a 43-28 victory against Wheaton Academy. Strube had 14 points and four rebounds. She was 6-for-12 from the field and hit two 3-pointers. Alex had 13 points, five steals and four assists. Carstensen had nine points and 14 rebounds. She also hit a 3-pointer. Gehrke had five points and made one 3-pointer.

“This was a game where our de-

fense played really well,” said Baumbach. “We’ve been working on our man-to-man defense the last couple of weeks and we did a great job shutting them down for four quarters. It was a very nice effort.”

Baumbach noted Timothy got out to a 10-0 start in the first quarter.

“That was huge,” he said.

Baumbach noted the Strube and Alex have been fueling the fire of late for the Trojans. “Right now Jordyn and Sureya have been outstanding,” he said. “They are really feeding off each other. The last four or five games both have been scoring in double figures. It’s a combination of fast-break points and steals and throwing it ahead to the other girl.

They are a really nice combo for us.”

Timothy has been playing of late without sophomore standout Hannah Schuringa who is sidelined with an injury.

“We must give kudos to Sarah Carstensen, who basically has played forward, center and sometimes guard,” said Baumbach. “She is super-versatile for us. The same thing with Lauren Gehrke. Everybody has picked it up while Hannah has been out. We’re hoping she is back at the Christmas tournament.”

Timothy plays at Aurora Christian Saturday and then heads to the Lisle Christmas tournament on Dec. 26 where it opens play against Antioch.

Timothy Christian’s boys basketball team will host its MLK Trojan Shootout on Jan. 21.

The event has eight teams and four games featuring a number of elite players.

At 1:30 p.m., Parkview Christian out of Yorkville, faces Chicago Hope. At 3 p.m., Aurora Christian plays host Timothy Christian in a Metro Suburban Conference crossover battle. At 4:30 p.m., Blackhawk Christian from Fort Wayne, Indiana, plays Chicago Orr, while Marian

Catholic plays Naperville North at 6 p.m. Chicago Orr has won the last two Class 2A state titles.

Blackhawk Christian features 6-9 power forward Caleb Furst who, according to a Timothy Christian press release, is being recruited by numerous Division I schools. Naperville North features 6-7 forward Tom Welch, who is committed to Loyola-Chicago. Chicago Orr features 6-5 forward Tujautae Williams who is touted in the release as a Division I prospect, as is Aurora Christian 6-4 forward Will Wolfe and Marian Catholic 6-1 guard Ahron Ulis.

“Zach played awesome against Walther,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell.

IC Catholic Prep did drop a recent MSC Blue game at Riverside-Brookfield.

“It was a tough loss,” said Tyrrell.

“R-B is a strong shooting team and shot extremely well and we did not shoot extremely well. We had good possessions and put our guys in the positions we wanted, but we couldn’t finish. R-B ran away with it. They made 13 three-point baskets. It’s a tough one, but it’s a learning experience. R-B starts five seniors and we have a really young team. You could see the difference. One team was clicking and ours is still figuring things out.”

Tyrrell said Lee played well in the loss. “Chauncey Lee was a bright spot,” he said. “He played a strong game. He’s starting to find his rhythm after the football season.

He had 16 points against R-B. He’s

extremely quick to the basket. I have not coached a player with his quickness and foot speed before. He’s fun to watch.”

Tyrrell liked the team’s progression prior to the R-B game. “Prior to R-B, we were seeing positive improvement,” he said. “We haven’t had that many practices together since football ended because we are playing so many games. We still have forward momentum. We started out slow against Lisle and stayed composed and battled back and won the game. I’m proud of the boys. I was pumped to see that. The good thing about Lisle is they are a Class 2A team and that should help us with playoff seeding because typically we are in similar sectionals.”

Tyrell tipped his cap to the recent play of both Wojtalewicz and Jordan.

Going by the “Woj” moniker on the team, Wojtalewicz had 10 rebounds in addition to his 15 points against Lisle.

“Woj has been tough all year,” said Tyrrell. “He’s the heart and soul of what we do. His work ethic, vocal presence on the court and positive approach to the game makes him an incredibly positive asset to the team and the program.”

In addition to his 14 points, Lee also had four assists and three steals

against Lisle. Jordan also shot 4-for9 from the 3-point line against Walther in a game where Wojtalewicz added 16 points and Gaudio had eight points. IC Catholic Prep took six charges as a team in the game.

“Zach’s performance against Walther was outstanding,” Tyrrell added.

Carpanzano and Asmussen are the team’s only two seniors. “Mike and Ryan have been very vocal since the start,” said Tyrrell. “We brought up some sophomores that we were not anticipating playing with us and they took them under their wing and have been very vocal and have been very positive with them.”

IC Catholic Prep is off until it opens play on Dec. 26 in its own IC Catholic Prep-Westmont Christmas tournament.

“We have a great group of kids here,” said Tyrrell. “It’s a pleasure coming to practice. They learn every day and we have so much to teach them. We have a stretch (this week) where we should be able to put a lot of our stuff in because we don’t play until the 26th. We’re probably at 30 percent of where this team can be at.

There is a lot of upside and potential with this group. We know we get to play R-B at home next time so that

Dukes freshman team wins Hinsdale Central invitational

The York girls gymnastics team has enjoyed some early-season successes at multiple levels of the program.

Through late last week the Dukes were 1-1 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action after defeating Hinsdale Central and losing to Glenbard West.

The York freshman team won the Hinsdale Central invitational and took second at the Andrew invitational.

Coach Anthony Colant noted the team has been hard at work as it headed into the Palatine invitational over this past weekend.

“I’m hoping some of the long-term changes we’ve been working on will kick in and give us a new team high since I took over the program in 2016,” he said.

At the Andrew invitational, Hannah Aubry took first in the allaround.

Colant said one key focus has been on having a team-first mentality in the practice gym and during

competitions.

“We’re working toward a big-picture goal: Putting the team’s needs before their own and focusing on improving their routines rather than working on an individual skill that they think is exciting,” said Colant.

Right now, Colant said York is excelling on bars. “Bars definitely is our strongest event because we have bails and giants on JV,” he explained. “And our varsity is regularly scoring in the upper 8s with a lot of room to grow based on our

current talent.”

In addition to Aubry, Colant has seen key contributions of late from Martha Miklyukh, Maryalice Shockey and Rachel Lawson.

“Martha and Maryalice have both stepped up immensely as freshmen, joining the varsity team as all-arounders,” said Colant. “They have been very flexible reworking their existing routines to make changes outside their comfort zone.

Rachel also has immensely stepped up as a role model and leader within the gym.”

As with Miklyukh and Shockey, Colant added coachability also is a factor in the team’s overall progress. “What impresses me the most is their willingness to be coachable and make changes to their routines and skill based on what their coaches think is best rather than placing their individual needs before the team’s needs,” he said.

York girls bowling team keeps on trucking Dukes off to 4-0 start in conference

It’s business as usual for the York girls bowling team.

In addition to winning the Rich East invitational at both the varsity and JV levels, the Dukes also are off to a 4-0 start in West Suburban Conference play at the varsity level.

At Rich East, coach Katie Turnbull noted eight York bowlers were in the top 10 standings between the JV and varsity.

In York’s 3,204-2,384 victory against Leyden in WSC action, York had games of 996 and then broke the 1,000-pin threshold in the second (1,054) and third (1,154) games.

Holly Santucci led the way for a balanced Dukes team that had five bowlers break the 500 series mark.

Santucci finished at 572 with high games of 190 and 230.

Lauren Rickenbrode added a 545 with games of 207 and 179. Ruby Noel finished with a 541 with high

games of 174, 175 and 192. Krystyna Panek added a 537 with high games of 176 and 225. Rose Klinger finished with a 516 with high games of 182 and 170, while Caroline Collins had a 493 with high games of 170 and 166. York rolled three 200 games in the dual meet.

The Dukes’ junior-varsity team was a 2,473-2,082 WSC winner against Leyden. Madeline Mountcastle bowled a 500 series with high games of 198 and 168. Kara Jensen finished with a 462, which included a 192 high game. Abbie Romanowski had a 426 series with a 157 high game. Khloe Lesus had a 421 series with a 158 high game. Katherine Svehla had a 152 high game.

The Dukes also were 3,233-2,897 winners against Hinsdale Central in WSC action in a contest that saw York break the 1,000-pin barrier in all three games (1,066, 1,094, 1,073).

This time, Noel led the game with a strong 635 series, which included

games of 241, 217 and 177. Panek had a 573 with high games of 227 and 181. Rickenbrode had a 522 with high games of 194 and 179. Klinger finished at 521 with high games of 204 and 188. Santucci bowled a 510 with high games of 201 and 161, while Collins was at 472 with a 167 high game. York had five 200 games in the contest.

York’s JV won 2,490-1,957 against Hinsdale Central. Maggie Clink had a 483 high series with a 166 high game. Lesus has a 472 series with a 188 high game, while Emily Catalano had a 462 series with a 168 high game.

On the JV 2 level, Chloee Moroney

had high games of 163 and 161.

York also is 4-0 in WSC play on the JV level.

“The team is bowling extremely well so far this year,” said Turnbull.

“I’ve been very impressed with their progression throughout the season already, and while we still have more work to do to continue improving mechanics and consistency, I really believe in this group and I know they are capable of performing really well this season.”

Panek recently was named York’s athlete of the month for December thanks to her finishes at Plainfield Central and Rich East. Turnbull also had high praise for Noel’s recent ef-

forts, along with Santucci.

“Ruby and Krystyna bowled incredibly well against Hinsdale Central,” she said.

Turnbull noted freshmen Mountcastle and Jensen have made major strides as well. “Madeline and Kara have been bowling for five weeks and they shot 198 and 190 respectively recently,” she said. “They are learning fast and improving each day. It’s really great to see that. I am so proud of them.”

York competed in the West Aurora invitational this past weekend. The Dukes return to action after the new year with WSC contests starting up again.

Through the first seven games, Wojtalewicz was leading the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game and rebounding at 9.4 per game. Gaudio was averaging 12.4 points and 2.3 assists per game. He also had 16 steals, 11 deflections and nine blocked shots.

Jordan was averaging 12.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game and had 11 steals. Lee was averaging 6.3 points, while Carpanzano was at 5.5

points and Asmussen was at 5.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest.

Jordan was the team leader in freethrow shooting at 81 percent (21 of 26). Gaudio was shooting 41 percent from the 3-point line (13-for-32), while Jordan was at 31 percent (14-for-45).

Jordan had a recent four-game stretch where he had scoring games of 15, 8, 18 and 23. He’s also had assist games of 9 and 7. Wojtalewicz was in double figures in scoring in five of IC Catholic Prep’s first five games and had six games of eight or more rebounds with high rebounding games of 17 and 10 at the Coal City tournament.

“When I returned home, I needed a wheelchair and I developed an opioid addiction from my treatment, which severely impacted my

life and the lives of my entire family,” says Minyard. “While surgery got me out of a wheelchair, the pain persisted until I found an alternative treatment option called spinal cord stimulation.”

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS), an FDA-approved, drug-free treatment option, is a surgically implanted medical device that has helped patients manage their chronic pain without addictive pain pills for over 40 years. Most commonly used to treat low back and lower extremity pain, SCS sends electrical pulses that stimulate the spinal cord, masking the pain message traveling to the brain.

Recent technology advances have allowed SCS systems to offer more precise and personalized treatment that better targets individual pain. In particular, the Spectra WaveWriter SCS System from Boston Scientific is the first and only system to simultaneously provide pain relief with a light tingling sensation (paresthesia-based therapy) or without that sensation (sub-perception therapy). Patients like Minyard can choose to combine both therapies to target one specific area of pain or use each as needed to best manage multiple areas of pain. Using a remote

“The flexibility in this treatment has the ability to offer patients successful therapy that other forms of pain management cannot,” says Dr. Louis Raso, a pain specialist at The Pain Center in Jupiter, Florida, who recommended a trial of the Spectra WaveWriter SCS system to Minyard. “When patients take realtime control of their therapy, they can better manage their pain across multiple areas of the body.”

Minyard, who has been off opioid pain medication since his first SCS system implant over eightand-a-half years ago, has noticed a significant improvement in managing his pain with the latest technology and is encouraging all chronic pain patients to talk to their doctors about therapeutic alternatives to addictive painkillers.
