DuPage Foundation awards $300,000 in grants to area not-for-profits Art Museum, Symphony, Spirito! among recipients The DuPage Foundation located in Downers Grove has announced its awarding of almost $310,000 in grants to 31 DuPage County non-profits working in the areas of education, arts & culture, the environment and animal welfare, as part of its k2019 fall Community Needs grant cycle. Grants were distributed at the Foundation’s Holiday Open House on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

As part of the Foundation’s current strategic plan, Community Needs grant priorities have been modified to ensure support is addressing the most critical needs in our community.

“During the fall grant cycle, our Grant Committee tested these proposed modifications to be certain the updated priorities truly reflect the types of program we’re most interested in funding,” said Barb Szcze-

paniak, Foundation vice president for programs. “The revised priorities are intended to help organizations submit successful applications that are laser-focused on the needs and gaps that have emerged in the community.

The total amount granted in the 2019 Fall cycle was $308,938 for 31 organizations. Of that amount, there were 16 Arts & Culture grants in a total of $112,950.

Elmhurst Art Museum — $20,000 Funded by the JCS Arts, Health and Education Fund, this amount will support revitalization of the Education Center that will greatly support EAM’s goal of increasing awareness and participation in DuPage County by increasing the Center’s capacity and patron use.

Elmhurst Symphony Association -- $2,500 Funded by the JCS Arts, Health and Education Fund, the grant will support the writing and performance of an original piece of chamber music about monarch butterflies as a

way of reaching a broader audience through nature-themed music.

Spirito! Singers — $5,000 This grant will support a day of choral instruction and growth for female singers in grades 4-12 and professional music educators.

SCARCE -- $20,000 School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education, or SCARCE, was awarded a grant to support programs which reduce waste and educate people of all ages on how to conserve natural resources and prevent pollution.

Police investigating residential burglary on Melrose On Tuesday, Dec. 10 at approximately 3:43 p.m., Elmhurst Police responded to a report of a residential burglary that occurred between 8 a.m. and 3:40 p.m. on the 200 block of Melrose.

Police believe that the offender entered the house by breaking

a side window and entering the home. Once inside, the offender removed collector coins and the cremated remains of a family member.

Police are in the process of reviewing neighborhood videos and ask that anyone with information to please call 630-530-3050.

City unanimously elects to sign agreement with D205 Morley calls it a ‘testament to team effort’

On the heels of the Elmhurst School District 205’s announcement that it would enter into an agreement with the City of Elmhurst regarding TIF finances and storm water mitigation, City aldermen elected to sign the agreement as well at the City Council meeting held Monday, Dec. 16.

“This is an agreement that has been a long time coming,” said 5th Ward Alderman Scott Levin. “It’s taken a long time to steer the ship through the right process.”

“This was a tough one for me, because the City has put forth a lot, including the $1.2 million when York [High School] was built,” said 3rd Ward Alderman Michael Bram. “I’m in support of it because overall, I believe this is a win for all residents and I’ll leave it at that. It was tough because I feel like the City has negotiated well and given a lot of issues to District 205, so I think this will be best.”

Seventh Ward Alderman Michael Brennan agreed.

“I’m excited to support it,” he said.

“It was a lengthy document but in the end, the residents expect us to come together and serve our community.”

outstanding for as long as ten years and spans the service of two District 205 school boards. An agreement in principle was publicly approved and signed by the City and the District in September of 2018.

A draft of the agreement was nearly completed and publicly addressed last spring when negotiations stalled, primarily over the issue of whether the easement for the York project would be permanent. During the summer, District 205 considered and proposed a permanent easement if the storm water storage could be put underground with an artificial turf field on top. The proposed solution revitalized discussions between the City and District 205, resulting in the agreement being considered and acted upon by the School Board at a special meeting called on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

eration of storm water management facilities at York High School and Jackson Elementary, coupled with site improvements at both schools.

The York project involves installation of storm water storage tanks by the City, on top of which District 205 will construct an athletic field with artificial turf. The Jackson project involves adjusting the field and enhancing its playability.

The agreement also includes a payment from the City to District 205 in the amount of $2.085 million from the City’s tax increment financing (TIF) funds.

Mayor Morley adds his comments The City Council vote passed 130, with one alderman absent. After the vote, Mayor Steve Morley spoke up.

“The City and the Council have faced many storm water challenges,” he said. “Over the last several years, we’ve started taking it very seriously.

Now, we’ve spent tens of millions of dollars in flood mitigation.

“We used to be known as the town that flooded, but now we’re known as the town who has done something about flood mitigation. It was a commitment to save home values in our community.”

Morley recalled how long the City has struggled with the issue.

“When I was elected six-and-onehalf years ago, in order to store water, we needed open space and we’re landlocked,” he said. “We needed our other taxing bodies to come together and work with us. It’s been a long time coming, but we’re happy this is finally coming together. I have received signed copies from the School Board and after this meeting has adjourned, I’m immediately going to my office to place my signature on the documents.”

He thanked the many aldermen who worked hard to move the agreement forward.

“On April 23 of this year, the president of the School Board said they were done talking to us,” Morley recalled. “So I think tonight is a testament that it is a team effort and the continued efforts will all work, if we work together.”

Finally, Morley thanked School Board president Kara Caforio.

“There have been a lot of challenges, but President Caforio and I have met numerous times and I can state unequivocally that without her help, we would not be where we are today,” he said. “I think residents expect us to work together. So I think this is a new beginning in our relationship with School District 205.”

Nicor Gas introduces ‘Keep Me Informed’ New communications platform will keep customers up-to-date

As part of its commitment to providing natural gas customers with best-in-class service utilizing innovative technology, Nicor Gas is enhancing its ability to quickly and directly reach customers by leveraging mobile phone technology.

Nicor Gas is introducing “Keep Me Informed” or KMI, a new communications platform that proactively provides status updates to residential customers about their scheduled appointments through text messages.

When scheduling certain types of service appointments, such as new service connections, Nicor Gas customers will now be able to opt-in to receive text messages to keep them informed of the status of their appointment.

“As customer expectations continue to grow and shift and the technology available to us evolves, adding another option for our customers to communicate with us is one of many ways we’re adapting and adjusting our operating practices to meet new and changing demands,” said Anthony McCain, vice president of Resource Management at Southern Company Gas. Nicor Gas is one of the four natural gas distribution companies of

Southern Company Gas, which has made KMI technology a prioritized investment to expand customer communications.

“By investing in innovative communications solutions through text message and concierge services, we hope to make customer interactions with Nicor Gas more convenient, and ultimately make it easier to do business with us,” McCain said.

Customers whose appointments are covered by KMI will receive a confirmation text after an appointment is scheduled and will receive a reminder message the day before and the day of their scheduled appointment. The KMI system, introduced in select Nicor Gas service areas in September, will also send a text alerting the customer that the technician is on the way. Once work is complete, customers will be notified through a final text, which will include a link to a customer satisfaction survey.

The KMI system will continue to be offered in selected Nicor Gas service territories and will be available to all residential customers by the end of January. KMI text messages are currently being used for new service appointments with plans to expand the service to other appointment types in the near future. Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Assault, battery Dec. 8 Romya K. Hampton, 57, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting arrest and trespass to property at Elmhurst Hospital at around 12:05 p.m.

Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital for a report of a subject refusing to leave the hospital. Officers met with hospital staff who stated that Hampton became verbally abusive and was refusing to leave the hospital after he had been discharged, according to police. While officers were trying to remove Hampton, he allegedly spat on an officer and resisted arrest.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Dec. 11 Joseph G. Tadros, 46, of Lombard, was charged on the above date with criminal trespass to a vehicle, aggravated driving while license revoked and no insurance subsequent to a traffic crash near North and Route 83 Dec. 8.

Dec. 9 A victim in the 500 block of N. Indiana told police at around 10 p.m. that their three vehicles had their tires slashed. The victim observed two white males, 16 to 18 years old, wearing leather jackets, ring their doorbell.

They stated they were waiting for a friend.

Upon being told they had the wrong house, the victim went inside. The victim then went outside to find the suspects gone and the tires slashed. Further investigation is pending.

Dec. 7-Dec. 9 The owner of an auto repair shop in the 100 block of N. Addison told police an unknown suspect broke the plate glass window to the storefront of the business sometime between the above dates. No entry to the business was gained and no property is missing.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Dec. 11 A 30-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with aggravated assault and two counts of domestic battery in the 600 block of W. Third at around 3:20 p.m. A victim told police that subsequent to a report of an altercation, the suspect tried to bite him.

Dec. 8 Police said officers responded for a 911 hang-up call in the 300 block of W. Grantley at around 8:20 p.m. The complainant told police he heard his wife disciplining their child and came out of his room to videotape her. He related that she subsequently struck him. The suspect related the complainant approached her aggressively and she defended herself by punching him. Due to no visible injuries to either party, no arrests were made.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication Dec. 9 Konrad Zurawski, 36, of Las Vegas, was charged with DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of hypodermic syringes, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, disobeying a traffic control device and no insurance subsequent to a hit-and-run crash near West and Randolph at around 5:22 p.m. Police said a reporting officer located heroin, syringes and drug paraphernalia inside the suspect’s vehicle.

Dec. 8 Cebastien R. Hyppolite, 23, of Des Plaines, was charged with DUI and speeding more than 26 mph over the limit subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 2:14 a.m.

Dec. 6 Eduard I. Sinjaradze, 45, of Buffalo Grove, was charged with DUI, carrying a concealed weapon while under the influence, reckless conduct and disorderly conduct in the 500 block of S. York at around 4:47 p.m. Police said officers responded to the report of Sinjaradze removing his handgun from his pocket and waving it around inside of a business.

Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspect left the scene and was en route to his residence, according to police. Police said officers observed the suspect drive into his driveway and a black handgun was recovered from his vehicle.

Harassment, threats May 1-Dec. 11 A reporting officer spoke to victim in the 700 block of S. Poplar, who stated she had ended a six-year relationship with the suspect, however, he continued to contact her even after she told him not to. Both parties were advised to avoid contact with each other.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance Dec. 11 Police said that while a reporting officer was on duty as a school resource officer at York High School at around 10:16 a.m., the officer was advised that a juvenile suspect was found to be in possession of cannabis. The suspect was cited for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Dec. 9 Anton Morris, 41, of Bellwood, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance at Elmhurst Hospital at around 11:08

Campbell, 24, of Maywood, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, DUI-drugs, unlawful possession of cannabis, driving while license revoked, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and failure to give information or render aid subsequent to a hit-and-run crash near Roosevelt and York at around 9:50 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a search of the suspect’s vehicle, officers located Xanax, Ecstasy, cannabis and a firearm.

Dec. 7 DeAndre C. Bolden, 27, of Oak Park, was charged with possession of cannabis, speeding, driving while license suspended and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Linden at around 8:58 a.m.

Jessica J. Glover, 29, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, expired registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Fullerton at around 4:06 p.m.

Alexandria Tourlas, 26, and Earnest D. Horton, 32, both of Elmhurst, were issued citations—Tourlas for possession of cannabis and Horton for possession of drug paraphernalia—in the 100 block of Commerce at around 11:50 p.m.

Dec. 6 Edwin Uriostegui, 20, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and new front registration plate subsequent to a traffic stop in the 400 block of S. York at around 4:27 p.m.

Dec. 5 Jason R. Hansen, 38, of Wood Dale, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful use of an electronic communication device, no valid driver’s license and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and Lake at around 9:53 p.m.

Police said a search of Hansen’s vehicle yielded a straw containing cocaine residue. Hansen also had a valid warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, according to police.

Suspicious circumstances Dec. 6 Police said officers responded for a residential alarm call in the 100 block of Rex at around 11:58 p.m. An officer located an unlocked rear door to the residence. The resident arrived on scene and stated she believes her ex-husband forced entry to her home. Nothing inside of the residence appeared to have been disturbed, and the scratches to the door frame appeared to be inconsistent with an attempted

Dec. 11 Identity theft was reported in the 600 block of S. Spring at around 3:41 p.m. A victim told police that he received a computer message stating his Social Security number had been used to purchase a vehicle and that the vehicle was seized by the federal government for drug-related crimes. The victim contacted a phone number provided and provided the unknown suspect with his Social Security number and private passcode. The victim later realized the phone call was a scam.

Dec. 10 Attempted theft by deception was reported in the 700 block of S. Hillside at around 11:50 a.m. A victim told police he was advised by an unknown suspect that he should purchase six Wal-Mart gift cards. The victim believed his granddaughter was in trouble so he bought the cards. After speaking with his wife, she decided to call the police. The victim did not relay any of the card information to the suspect and he will try to return them to Wal-Mart.

Residential burglary was reported in the 200 block of Melrose at around 3:42 p.m. Police said an unknown suspect broke the side window, gaining entry into the victim’s home. An officer noticed the master bedroom was in disarray. The victim was unsure if anything was missing. She did state that a box containing her son’s ashes had been removed from her dresser. An investigation is pending.

Dec. 1-Dec. 10 A victim in the 100 block of E. Elmhurst told police that she wrote a check to pay her rent and placed it in her mailbox. On Dec. 10, the victim’s debit card was declined for no funds on the account and she was informed the check had been used to transfer money to another bank twice. The account was closed.

Dec. 9 Armed robbery was reported at a mobile phone store in the 500 block of W. St. Charles at around 11:38 a.m. The store manager told police that two male suspects entered the store through the front doors, displayed handguns and told all the employees and two customers to go into the backstock room. The victims were told to fill up two bags with iPhones, Apple Watches and cash. Both suspects left the building out of the back door that leads into the alley behind the business. One of the suspects was described as a black male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches, 230 pounds wearing jogging pants and a dark hoodie. The second suspect was described as a black male approximately 5 feet 8 inches, between 230-240 pounds, wearing a dark hoodie.

Vehicle theft was reported at a car dealership in the 500 block of W. Lake at around 3:44 p.m. Police said a Mercedes entered the service bay area of the dealership. A male suspect exited the rear driver side of the car, got into a black, BMW X7, and exited the dealership garage. The vehicle was entered into LEADS as stolen.

Closet curmudgeon makes out Christmas wish list, checks it twice

Dear Santa: I wish I could tell you that I’ve been a good boy this year, but my tendency to look at the world through curmudgeon-colored glasses usually gets the best of me.

But now that I’ve come out of the closet and confessed my curmudgeonly tendencies to you, I’m hoping out of the goodness of your jolly, old St. Nick heart (and substantial girth), you’ll take my Christmas wish list into consideration.

If you can’t fulfill most (if not all) of my requests, at least leave me a coupon for a McRib and/or a 100 percent pure beef Whopper under the tree (see below).

All I want for Christmas is …

• To have the McRib on the McDonald’s menu all year-round, not just seasonally.

• For Burger King to dump the Impossible Whopper. A vegan Whopper at a place which has specialized in burgers for 66 years?

It’s sacrilege!

• Gluten free, fat free, sugar free Hostess Ding-Dongs, Ho-Hos, pies and cupcakes.

• A sequel to the commercial in which a guy purchases his-and-hers GMC Acadias, but his significant other runs to the Acadia that was supposed to be his, and gushes, “I love it! … I love it!” The sequel would show him taking the keys from her, keeping the Acadia she wanted, and driving the other Acadia originally meant for her back to the dealership.

• For hosts of sports radio talk shows to hang up on callers who begin their calls by saying, “Love you, love your show.” Fellas, you’re not calling Delilah to make a dedication or to get back with your ex; you’re calling a sports talk radio show.

• To secure a small business loan in order to revive the Manic Meatball restaurant which closed at the Yorktown Mall. With a last name like mine, I think I can make a go of it.

All I want for Christmas is …

• The equivalent of a cattle prod for cars so I could fasten one to the front bumper of my vehicle and jolt the driver in front of me who a.) apparently has never heard of right turn on red, or b.) is too engrossed in texting to notice the light has been green for several seconds.

• An FM or Sirius station that plays

nothing but holiday music parodies.

Bob Rivers has plenty of them: “The Twelve Pains of Christmas,” (parody of “The Twelve Days of Christmas), “Wreck the Malls,” (parody of “Deck the Halls”) and “Flu Ride” (parody of “Sleigh Ride” with a singer who sounds like Karen Carpenter) just to name a few.

• For the State Legislature to go into emergency session and pass an outright ban on deer antlers and red noses that you see Rudolph wannabes fasten to their vehicles during the holidays. (However, if a vehicle really can fly after putting deer antlers and a red nose on it, then I’m all in. I could fly over this god-awful traffic every day.)

• To have the Do-It-Yourself Messiah done for me.

All I want for Christmas is …

• A Maury Povich “You are the father” T-shirt. I take a large. (’Fess up: When no one’s around, you watch Maury, too.)

• For the Grinch to sneak into the studios of 93.9 Lite FM’s Chicago’s Christmas Station and pull the plug.

How anyone can listen to umpteen covers of the Christmas Song, Jingle Bells and Winter Wonderland 24/7 for weeks on end is beyond me.

• For the FCC to ban a 60-second commercial I routinely hear on A.M. radio featuring some woman lamenting for what seems minutes about her varicose and spider veins.

• Honda to bring back the Happy Honda Days commercials featuring crooner Michael Bolton—particularly the spot when Bolton pops out of the back seat and starts singing, scaring the bejesus out of the couple seated in front.

• A DVD of the all-time best Most Interesting Man in the World commercials, just to hear the narrator in his deep, booming voice, utter gems such as, “He has never relied on mistletoe,” … “He is the reason those nine ladies are dancing.”

• One of those $17.8 million qualifying offers that a few majorleague baseball players have turned down this off-season. I guarantee I’d sign it!

• For Uber drivers not to ask me if I’m ready for Christmas on Nov. 20.

(This really happened.)

All I want for Christmas … all levity and curmudgeon-ness aside, is to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy 2020.

State Rep supports efforts to curb discrimination, harassment

As the #MeToo movement brought the issues of harassment and discrimination into the public eye, I was encouraged by the brave individuals who came forward to share their stories. My colleagues and I knew that it was necessary to take action. While there is more work to be done, as the chair of the Illinois House Democratic Women’s Caucus, I am incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made to improve the lives of women working in the capitol and throughout the state.

After organizing meetings to speak with female lobbyists and staffers in the Capitol, we worked to implement an innovative and interactive training module that went beyond the training requirements at the time. Most significant, the House Democrats retained Maggie Hickey to conduct a comprehensive review of operations, identify challenges and areas of concern, and issue recommendations.

Caucus is encouraged by the significant steps that have been instituted so far within the speaker’s office and the clerk’s office, and we are confident these changes will create a better workplace environment. We will continue to build on these improvements as we work to implement the Hickey report’s recommendations.

For example, the speaker’s office continues to professionalize the human resources department, and recently posted new job opportunities to add more personnel. Additionally, all staff will soon receive in-person, interactive training aimed at preventing harassment, discrimination and bullying.

The commission of the report and its public release were unprecedented. It is critical to assess what happened in the past to move forward, and that is exactly what we did - in a big way.

Last spring, we passed Senate Bill 75 - a bipartisan, bicameral bill that

addressed all types of harassment and discrimination and improved the handling and disposition of workplace complaints. We hope to continue to work with our colleagues across the aisle and in the Senate as we strive to make our Capitol - and workplaces across the state - professional and respectful environments for all.

We believe every caucus must take a critical look at its own operations - and we recommend each caucus conduct a similar public review. It is a difficult step, but one that will reap significant rewards in the long run.

For our part, we plan to report publicly on our progress as we achieve more milestones.

Most important, we are committed, individually and collectively, to continue to listen and learn, and ensure these important conversations continue.

We want to show the world our best. This is even more true online with social media where we eagerly post our latest vacation (paid for via credit card) but don’t show the reality that is real.

Don’t get me wrong. This isn’t something new. People have always aspired to show their best side. I do this every time I get my photo taken, especially at the DMV. Still, there are things about each of us that we hesitate to share with the outside world. Maybe we’re afraid the real world won’t like us. Maybe the real world would judge. Maybe the real world would reject us.

On the flip side, there are just things that other people don’t know.

Not just about you. Things they don’t know how to respond or relate to because responding and relating is just as hard for them as it is for you.

People don’t know when they ask, “How are you?” and you smile and answer, “Fine,” you may very well be fine or you may be far from it.

They often don’t pause long enough to find out. Neither do you. Neither do I. People don’t know your private worries. (And we all have too many, don’t we?) They think your smiling self is the real you when it may not be.

People see you as completely normal, when you may feel anything but.

People don’t know that despite the car in the driveway and the namebrand shoes on our feet we all have our self-doubts. We hurt. We don’t know what we are doing, sometimes.

People don’t know that money can’t solve everything – or anything for that matter – and people who try to pretend that it can are only pretending.

People don’t know that life is just as challenging for everyone as it is for them. Life is meant to be challenging, I think, because easy isn’t worthwhile. Challenges develop character. They build strength, but it’s difficult to embrace that when you are in the middle of a challenging situation.

People don’t know how to respond to your tears or sometimes your honesty.

People don’t know how to find

joy in their hurt. People don’t realize this is even possible. I didn’t. Don’t.

Hoping to. Trying to. Two steps forward, one step back.

All these observations come from the truth and the fact that each of us puts up an exterior: the one we want the world to see. The sometimes inauthentic exterior that is not any of us, but rather represents us in the way we’d like the world at large to perceive us. And even, perhaps, the way we’d like to perceive ourselves.

People don’t realize this, however.

For the most part they don’t know – about others and maybe more importantly about themselves.

I don’t think it’s all bad, actually.

We should present ourselves in the best light possible. Being brutally honest about our obstacles and our struggles isn’t as entertaining as a good family photo in front of Cin-

derella’s castle.

Still, obstacles exist. Life can be hard sometimes – even when you are in the middle of a trip to the Magic Kingdom. When that happens, please give yourself a break. Acknowledge you are doing the best you can with what you have right now. What you are doing is enough, because you are enough.

Then turn toward the camera and smile for your selfie and realize tomorrow will give you another chance for a day as perfect as the castle in the photo’s background.

ICGS 7th grader brings awareness of Type I diabetes Olivia Nybo offers presentations to classrooms

On Oct. 6, 2014, when Olivia Nybo was just a second grade student at Immaculate Conception Grade School, she received a diagnosis of Type I diabetes.

After experiencing constant thirst over a period of time, she and her mother Faye made a visit to her doctor. After some medical tests were performed, the doctor diagnosed Olivia with this life-changing disease and sent the Nybos immediately to the hospital for further testing. After more medical testing, Olivia began the training necessary to give herself insulin shots and check her own blood sugar.

Initially, she recalls feeling scared and confused but her parents explained how lucky she was to have been diagnosed so early. They began doing extensive research about Type I diabetes and shared their knowledge in simpler terms with Olivia to alleviate her fear. Together, they mapped out a plan for returning to school and for sharing information with Olivia’s classmates.

Faye came into Olivia’s grade at ICGS and read the students a Disney book, “Go, Team Coco!” about one of Mickey Mouse’s friends who was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. She explained to the youngsters that Type I diabetes is not caused by being overweight or from eating too much sugar, and that it is not contagious.

Olivia and her Mom met with ICGS nurse Trish Miller, who introduced them to two other students who had Type I diabetes. Nurse Miller reassured Olivia that she was not alone and now belonged to a new sort of family with these older students. She also introduced Faye to the students’ mothers who proved to be invaluable resources.

In the years since her diagnosis, Olivia has been asked to join her doctor at Lurie Children’s Hospital on a billboard campaign about diabetes and, each summer, attends a special camp for children with diabetes. At camp, Olivia has listened to friends with Type I diabetes talk about being left out or joked about by their peers.

Recently, her mother suggested that Olivia talk to the students at IC Grade School about the disease so they could understand it better.

Since she serves on the school’s student council, Olivia proposed the idea first to Student Council moderator Jill VanderHye, then to ICGS Principal Cathy Linley. They fully supported the idea.

Before Thanksgiving, Olivia visited third through eighth grade classrooms and handed out information about Type I diabetes symptoms, treatment, and how insulin works in the body. She encouraged students to ask questions if they encounter someone with the disease rather than

possibly spreading misinformation.

When Olivia returned from Thanksgiving break, she was called down to Principal Linley’s office, who explained that her classroom presentations had made an incredible impact. The parents of a third grade student at the school had notified Principal Linley that when their daughter came home with Olivia’s handout, they decided to take her into the doctor because she was experiencing the symptoms listed on

the handout. She was quickly diagnosed with Type I diabetes.

Olivia said she felt badly for the girl’s diagnosis but so happy she was able to help the family identify it early. Olivia saw this younger student in the nurse’s office that week and explained to her that now she is a new member of this special family of students with Type I Diabetes.

When asked in retrospect about how this disease has affected her life, Olivia had this to say: “At the time,

I wondered why I had to be the one to receive such a life-changing diagnosis. As I’ve gotten older, I realize now that God knew I could help others who are struggling with Type I diabetes. He knew I could make a difference.”

Olivia plans to walk next fall in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund Walk in Chicago to raise funds for research and also hopes to become a JDRF Youth Ambassador for Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

ICCP junior appointed to Goodman Garden Club unveils Theatre Youth Arts Council plans for new year

IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) has announced that Aidan Rocha, a junior and member of the Class of 2021, has been selected to serve on the Goodman Theatre Youth Arts Council starting in December. He will be joining a select group of Chicago high school and college students tasked with helping to make the arts more accessible.

The Goodman Theatre Youth Arts Council (GYAC) is a group of high school and college students who work to make theater more accessible for Chicago area youth. Participants become ambassadors for the theater in this youth leadership program.

Members liaise between their peers and the Goodman, produce events for young audiences, and volunteer in their communities and schools.

“On behalf of IC Catholic Prep, we congratulate Aidan for being selected a member of the Youth Arts Council at the Goodman Theatre,” said Thomas Schergen, principal.

“Aidan is a confident young man and a leader among his peers. He works hard at all he does and is a wonderful contributor to our performing arts program. In addition to the learning he will be exposed to as a member

of this council, he will undoubtedly contribute leadership, innovation, and energy to the Goodman and greater Chicago performing arts community.”

The Goodman Aidan Rocha Youth Arts Council participants serve from December to May on an annual basis.

More about Aidan Rocha “This is such a great honor, and opportunity for Aidan,” said Julia Jazwiec, Theatre Director and Drama Club moderator. “He will bring great things to the Goodman Theatre Youth Arts Council. He is passionate and good at communicating his idea with others. I am so proud of him for throwing his hat in the ring for this position.”

Aidan talks about his inspiration for wanting to be a part of the GAYC. “Last summer, I was a part of the Goodman Theatre Playbuild program. For seven weeks, we learned a lot and developed, wrote, and performed an original play. The experience was amazing and helped me

to develop creative and leadership skills and I wanted to be able give back and tell others about these types of programs.”

Having joined the Knights Theater program during his freshman year, AIdan spoke positively about the Knights Theater as “a wonderful place,” where he and fellow students have been able to cultivate their love for the performing arts.

“It is a great program for everyone, from those new to performing or with a lot of experience,” he said.

“The size of the program gives everyone a chance to be a part of productions and try something new.

“This year, I had the chance to be the student director for the 2019 fall play (WCKY), which was a huge learning experience.”

His advice for other students?

“Definitely step outside of your comfort zone and try new activities,” Aidan said. “Be an individual and take risks and you may find something new that you love. The performing arts are a great experience that helps you grow and be challenged in many ways, and is full of creative people and—more importantly—is a lot of fun.”

The Elmhurst Garden Club’s first meeting of the New Year will be held on Monday, Jan. 6 at Wilder Mansion beginning at 11:30 a.m. with a members lunch, a business meeting at 12:15 and a guest speaker program open to the public at 1 p.m.

Glenn Grosch, certified Master Gardener and Arborist, instructor in the University of Illinois Master Gardener Continuing Education Program, and currently on the teaching staff at the Chicago Botanic Garden is the guest speaker at the January meeting. Grosch’s presentation, “Starting from Seed” will focus on specific steps for success in starting a garden from seed. Plant selection, types of containers, planting mixes, water, fertilizer, heat and light requirements will be covered in his presentation.

The year 2020 marks a special time for the club as it will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of its Annual Garden Walk and Faire – An Afternoon in the Garden. Each year since 1995, the EGC presents multiple private and public gardens for inspiration and enjoyment of visitors. A faire in Wilder Park features garden plants, accessories, horticultural experts and more.

Profits from the Garden Walk and Faire have are donated to local, cultural and charitable causes. Beginning in 1999, profits were also used to fund scholarships for college students pursuing degrees related to horticulture, landscape design, biology, environmental studies, and science education.

More than $150,000 has been awarded to some 75 scholars.

The Elmhurst Garden Club is open to anyone interested in gardening, ecology and floral design. There are over 100 members and annual dues are $35. Meetings are held at Wilder Mansion on the first Monday of the month. Each month a program on some facet of gardening, floral design, ecology and conservation are presented. Inaugural Winterpalooza held at Salt Creek District 48 Nostalgic event created by alums

Four Salt Creek School District 48 alums fondly remember the Christmas Carnival each year when they were growing up in Salt Creek Schools. It was a time when the whole community came together and where they made lifelong friends.

Now in the present day, the four have re-created the favorite event for the current school community.

“We got to talking and reminiscing, and we just thought ‘let’s do it’ and let’s see if we can create those same memories for this generation,” said Tracy Schellhorn, who is both a teacher’s aide in the District and a current parent.

She and the three other alums planned Winterpalooza. It was held Saturday, Dec. 7 and featured carnival games, a holiday shop, free prize drawings, an auction and a pancake breakfast. Dozens of parents and staff volunteered and hundreds of alums, current D48 families, community members and others attended the event.

“It was everything we had hoped it to be,” said Jessica Lindeen, who was one of the four alums who planned the event.

Lindeen graduated from Albright in 2003 and is now a teacher’s aide at Salt Creek Primary School preschool.

“It was amazing to see the District 48 community come together for such a great cause -- our kids,” she added.

workNet DuPage: The Year in Review The workNet DuPage Career Center has released its 2018-19 Year in Review, showcasing the significant impact the organization – funded by the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) – makes throughout DuPage County.

All year, the workNet DuPage Career Center enthusiastically supported both job seekers and local businesses.

Job hunters included laid-off workers affected by global market forces, as well as return-to-work parents, individuals with disabilities, veterans, young adults, and career changers. In addition, workNet DuPage assisted businesses hoping to develop their existing workforce and recruit talent.

“The progress we’ve made at the workNet DuPage Career Center has an exponential impact on families, as job seekers are able to find employment,” said DuPage County Economic Development Chairman Tim

Elliott. “The net benefit for DuPage County is not only measurable in monetary terms but is life-changing for our residents.

“Clients who completed workNet DuPage-funded job training programs earned more than $15.5 million in wages,” said workNet DuPage Career Center Executive Director Lisa Schvach. “That spending power is currently being re-invested into the community. Businesses, too, strengthened their workforce and simultaneously bolstered the regional economy. As we reflect on our clients’ achievements, we renew our steadfast commitment to DuPage County and move forward with great momentum.”

With record low unemployment in DuPage County, the center focused on upskilling the existing workforce by awarding local employers nearly $400,000 in Incumbent Worker training grants – an unprecedented amount.

New initiatives brings talent to EEHealth The center spearheaded new initiatives including a healthcare talent pipeline with Northwestern Medicine and Edward-Elmhurst Health to encourage career pathways in the County’s fastest- growing industry.

And with the national opioid crisis hitting home, the organization extended its impact with the launch of Recovery and Manufacturing – A

Path Up (RAMP-UP), a workforce program connecting individuals in recovery with meaningful work and manufacturers with a distinct talent pool. For this effort, workNet DuPage won the 2019 Illinois Workforce Partnership Innovative Solutions Award, honoring exemplary service to the state workforce system.

The report highlights client success stories, providing a snapshot of the more than 300 individuals and

many businesses, which benefited from job search support, training, and/or funding assistance. Their compelling stories illustrate the myriad ways workNet DuPage changes lives and contributes to the success of the local economy.

Orick says the Library could be the first step in tackling an online application process. Beyond that, Orick can refer patrons to nearby centers with resources appropriate to their needs.

The social work department can connect patrons with a variety of services for: • Food • Mental health • Housing • Substance abuse • Employment • Social Security • Benefits • Domestic issues The Library’s referral-based model allows patrons to consult with Orick on a one-on-one basis in a neutral setting outside the stigma some may feel in a traditional social services setting.

“The community can think of me as the first go-to,” she said. “Then I can refer them out.”

Anyone experiencing temporary or ongoing challenges may meet with Orick during her office hours for one-on-one consultation and referrals on the 2nd floor in Study Room 4.5.

Providing social services is a growing trend in libraries across the country. For many, the idea is long overdue, given the fact that public libraries are one of the few public spaces open to anyone in a community, based on a principled commitment to openness and inclusivity. As in any community, the Elmhurst Public Library provides a neutral space for community members to come in, gather information, and explore.

Earlier this year, Tracey Orick, BSW, CADC became Elmhurst Public Library’s full-time Social Services Specialist after the Library spent over a year evaluating the benefits of social workers in a library setting.

Elmhurst Public Library began testing the waters of providing more direct access to social services by arranging internship opportunities for Aurora University students pursuing Social Work degrees in the spring of 2018. So far, five students have participated in internships at EPL. This collaboration has provided students real-world experience while allowing EPL the opportunity to gather valuable information about issues on the minds of our community members.

“The Library is a public building where anyone is welcome to come in and find information or resources to help improve or enhance their lives,” said Orick. “Access to Social Services in the Library is a continuation of that philosophy.”

As a result of a Social Services Needs Assessment conducted in 2018, Elmhurst community members’ survey responses revealed that individuals in our community face challenges like unemployment, food insecurity, or domestic violence.

“In my experience, there has been a high percentage of senior citizens who are seeking employment assis-

York boys basketball coach Doran to be inducted into IBCA Hall of Fame Veteran coach starred as a player at now defunct Driscoll and Elmhurst College

York boys basketball coach Vince Doran can add hall of famer to his resume.

Doran will be inducted this coming spring into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a player.

Doran, now in his eighth season as York’s head coach, starred at the high school level at now shuttered Driscoll Catholic High School in Addison and then went on to have another stellar run on the hardwood at Elmhurst College.

“It’s a really cool honor,” Doran said.

Doran noted York athletic director Rob Wagner arranged to have Mark Kleeman, his coach at Driscoll, surprise Doran during a recent player-parent meeting he was conducting at the Elmhurst school. The announcement and revelation of Kleeman occurred during the meeting.

“Our AD put it together and my high school coach came up and was introduced while we were doing a thing on program expectations with the parents and players,” Doran explained. “It was special and certainly very surprising. I’ve gone from a coach to friend relationship with him. He drove up three hours from Peoria to do it. This is very neat. I’m very excited and honored. It’s some-

thing I am looking for.”

Doran is a 1988 graduate of Driscoll where he played on the varsity for three years. At the time, he left the school as its all-time leading scorer with just shy of 1,100 career points.

“If you talk to Mark he will say I held every record, but I know that is not true,” Doran said with a laugh.

“I have had a lot of friends reach out to me about this and guys I have played against. I’ve met a lot of people and made a lot of friends through the game and have maintained those friendships over the years.”

Doran graduated from Elmhurst College in 1992 and is in the school’s athletic hall of game. His senior year he helped lead Elmhurst to the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament. He finished his career there with 1,032 points and left holding the career records for steals and assists (He now ranks second in both categories). He currently is tied for second for games played all-time at the school.

Prior to York, Doran was the head boys coach at Hinsdale South for 10 years. He also was the head coach at Driscoll for two of the four years he was on the boys staff there. He also had assistant coaching stints at De La Salle and Reavis (3 years) and spent time on college sidelines at Lewis and Benedictine. Doran is in his 18th year as a business teacher at Hinsdale South.

He will be enshrined into the IBCA Hall of Fame Saturday, May 2, 2020, at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.

Shockey explodes for 32 points in York road win at Glenbard West Victory pushes Dukes to 2-0 in tough WSC Silver

As has been documented in these pages for years, winning in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division in boys basketball is no easy task.

It gets even trickier trying to do that on the road.

But the York boys basketball team did just that, notching a 50-38 WSC Silver win in Glen Ellyn against

Glenbard West.

The win moved York to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.

York was bolstered by the play of Nate Shockey, who lit up Glenbard West for 32 points. Jeff Grace chipped in 10 points.

“The kids coming back with experience played extremely very well for us,” said York coach Vince Doran.

“That’s what we expected from Nate and Jeff. They have played in the big games and understand how hard it is to win on the road in the league. They stepped it up.”

Doran again was thrilled with York’s play on the defensive end.

Timothy Christian girls basketball team records three conference wins Trojans hold three foes to average of just over 25 points

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team asserted itself in the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division in a big way recently.

The Trojans posted three MSC Red wins against Westmont, Guerin Prep and Ridgewood to move to 5-0 in league play. The three wins bumped Timothy to 7-3 overall.

In a 63-28 win over conference newcomer Westmont, Timothy led 19-8 after the first quarter and 27-17 at halftime. Runs of 19-7 and 17-4 put the game out of reach in the second half.

Sureya Alex led the Trojans with 16 points, while Hannah Schruinga had 14 points. Freshman Grace Roland added nine points, while Sara Carstensen and Bethany Griffin each finished with seven points. Timothy shot 47 percent from the field. Alex hit a pair of 3-pointers, while Roland had seven rebounds. Freshman Maddie Drye had five assists and two steals. Alex had four assists and four steals.

“We forced a lot of turnovers,” said Timothy coach Jill Groenewold.

“We worked on our pressure and our half-court press. I also liked our balanced scoring. We had good games both inside and outside.”

Timothy also was a 56-21 winner over Guerin Prep. The Trojans led 23-3 after the first quarter and 33-10 at halftime. Schuringa had 23 points on 11 of 13 shooting from the field.

Roland had seven points. The Trojans shot 55 percent from the floor.

Griffin had six assists, while Drye and Alex each had four assists. Drye and Schuringa each had three assists.

“We pressed very well and got after Guerin inside,” said Groenewold.

“That works to our advantage with our height.”

The Trojans wrapped the week with a 66-27 win over Ridgewood.

Groenewold also applauded the inside play of Greta Hoogstra who had numerous blocked shots. “Greta also rebounded well,” she said. “If people got past us, she was there in the way.

In recent times, Groenwold noted Schruinga has been a steady presence, as has Alex, while ninth-grader Drye has done well at the point guard position.

Groenewold was able to play many players throughout the three games. “The girls got a lot of playing time,” she said. “Everybody was rotating. That’s good for the kids to get in different situations and adjust to who they are playing with.”

The Trojans return to action Friday and Saturday against Walther Christian and Aurora Christian prior to the Lisle Christmas tournament.

“There will be no easy games at Lisle,” Groenewold said. “We have to come ready to play each night.”

York girls gymnastics coach Nick Criel has reason for optimism.

“Our gymnasts have gotten a lot better at trying new skills they have not done before,” he said. “The motivation to learn here is high.”

York is coming off a 2018-2019 season where it finished third in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division.

Criel noted Cronin is the first girl to complete a double-back move at York in the past 10 years.

Freshman Kalina Ceglinski (allaround) is a key newcomer for the Dukes.

“Our strongest events are floor and vault,” said Criel. “Our tumbling skills have improved since last season, and all our vaults have a higher start value than the previous years.”

Criel noted keys to having a successful season include consistency.

“We have advanced skills in our

routines with a lot more repetition,” he pointed out. “Our skills will consistently stick. These girls are very hard-working at practice and always are looking to improve their skills.

“What I like most about our team is they have the drive to improve. I love how they show a lot of interest in skills they want to learn or perfect.

They care a lot about their performance.”

Criel said Glenbard West and Hinsdale Central will be strong in the WSC Silver. “We fit in around third in the conference, but are hoping to improve this season,” he said.

And beyond the conference schedule?

The IC Catholic Prep girls basketball team capped off a recent busy stretch by going 3-1 during a four-game window that included it starting play in the Reavis pre-Christmas tournament.

The Knights opened that fourgame run with a 59-51 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division loss to Aurora Central Catholic.

“Too many turnovers and missed shots, especially free throws,” Knights coach Todd Fisher said. “I think from a mental standpoint, it was not our best game. You have

to chalk it up to being one of those games.”

IC Catholic Prep led in the first quarter, but trailed by a bucket at halftime. “We were down most of the game, but for how we played, it was kind of a two-possession game,” Fisher said. “We were always in the game and right there, and then a mistake would happen that would hurt us. For how we played and to still be in it was a positive.”

Gia Gaudio had 16 points, while Alia Johnson added 14 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Claire Wagner had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Knights got back on the conference winning track quickly with a 49-41 win on the road in Kankakee against Bishop McNamara.

Wagner paced the Knights with

21 points, while Johnson had 13 points and Gaudio finished with nine points. The win bumped IC Catholic Prep to 3-1 in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division action.

“We played a better game,” said Fisher. “Coming off the ACC game, this was a cleaner game. We shot the ball better and played better defense. We were coming off a little bit of a disappointment with ACC and took a trip to Bishop Mac and played a lot better.”

The Knights opened play in the Reavis pre-Thanksgiving tournament in Burbank with a 55-29 win over Thornridge. IC Catholic Prep led 19-1 in a game that quickly spiraled into a blowout.

“It was 19-1 and we went from there,” Fisher said.

Johnson had 14 points and four

steals, while Wagner turned in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

“It was nice to see balanced scoring,” said Fisher. “It was a good game. We jumped on them quick.

We worked on a few things. I was pleased with the fact we were able to work on some things. It was a good win for us.”

The Knights then moved to 2-0 at Reavis with a 37-29 win over Payton College Prep. IC Catholic Prep led 10-9 after the first quarter and 23-16 at halftime.

Gaudio came up big for the Knights, scoring more than half the team’s points with a 19-point output. Frankie Chaidez added five points and hit a 3-pointer.

The Knights played Bremen in the tournament Monday and will face Riverside-Brookfield in a

MSC Blue game Friday.

“Reavis is a good pre-Christmas tournament that gets us a lot of games,” said Fisher. “They had a team drop out at the last second and it was a matter of people knowing people and we had a stretch where we didn’t have a lot of games and needed some. We know this is a lot of games and we’ll give the kids some much-needed breaks. It’s finals week this week. We play on Monday and then we’ll give the kids a couple days off and get back at it Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

“Right now, I’m happy where the team is at. They are doing a lot of good things. They are getting better each day. That’s cliché, but they are getting better. Even with the ACC loss, it was a fun week. The girls are working hard and that hard work is paying off.”

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team split a recent pair of non-conference games against Walther Christian and Fenwick.

The Knights were 75-63 winners against Walther Christian, fueled by a 27-point performance from Dom Gaudio who hit three 3-pointers and was 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.

“Dom. Wow!” said IC Catholic Prep coach T.J. Tyrrell. “I knew he was having a good game, but I didn’t know it was that high. He has very smooth games. He goes about his business. He’s a low-key guy who has stepped up in a big way for us all season. I was extremely pleased with Dom’s performance. He’s a leader.

This is his third year with us.”

Chauncey Lee added 17 points (9-for-13 from the free-throw line), while Zach Jordan had 14 points.

The Knights led 20-16 after the first quarter and 39-25 at halftime.

IC Catholic Prep also dropped a 58-53 contest to Oak Park Fenwick.

The Knights trailed 20-13 after the first quarter and 34-21 at halftime before outscoring the Friars 32-24 in the second half.

Lee had 18 points, while Gaudio had 13 points and Jordan finished with 12. The loss put the Knights at 6-2 overall.

Tyrrell noted the Knights’ early-season success is the result of the contributions of many. “We’re getting some really good minutes out of Zach Jordan, who is averaging about 15.5 points a game,” he said.

“Chauncey is around 13.5 points a game and Dom is at 10 or 11. We have a lot of key guys.”

Tyrrell also applauded the play of Michael Hilgart. “Michael is giving us a lot of minutes in terms of fundamental play with boxing out and being smart with the basketball,” the coach said. “He has a low turnover percentage. He settles us down when we are out there.”

Junior Johnny Falduto, along with Danny Roberto and Danny Cronin also have been key contributors of late. “Johnny Falduto gives us a lot of energy as a junior,” Tyrrell said.

“Danny Roberto is a strong on-theball defender and makes good decisions with the ball. Danny also is a good teammate. Dan Cronin still is doing a lot of college visits for his football opportunities and is working his way back in. He gives us a lot of energy, strength and athleticism.”

The Walther Christian contest came on the heels of a conference loss at Chicago Christian. “That was our first conference game and it was a game we were winning after three quarters,” said Tyrrell. “They are a tough team. It was a good road atmosphere and a good test. We came back and beat Walther in our first home game. Overall, we know we have a lot to work on, but the boys are starting to come together.”

Tyrrell noted the team took a team retreat up to Michigan that was a major success. “It was good for everybody,” he said. “We took the cellphones away. The guys bonded and built chemistry. We have a lot of returning kids from last year. The difference this year is there is a lot of optimism and confidence. They are in a different mindset.”

IC Catholic Prep played Lisle earlier in the week and returns to conference action Friday against Riverside-Brookfield.

DuPage County Forest Preserve District: Enjoy the outdoors, but follow safety tips The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County reminds residents to play it safe while enjoying ice fishing, snow tubing, cross-country skiing and other fun winter activities.

“The safest way to enjoy the outdoors is with another person so you’re not alone if there’s an emergency,” said Dan Jones, assistant site operations manager and longtime District ranger. “If that’s not possible, let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back.”

For those venturing onto the ice, there should be at least 4 inches of clear ice for one person as a guideline not a guarantee. For a group of

people, there should be at least 8 inches of solid ice. In DuPage County’s forest preserves, rangers do not monitor ice conditions, so visitors step onto the ice at their own risk.

“It’s always a good idea to carry a set of ice picks with you in case you fall through the ice,” Jones adds.

Ice strength can be affected by wind, snow, rain, sunlight, water levels, underground springs and temperature, which can vary greatly over one body of water. Anyone venturing out onto the ice should know the signs of dangerous conditions: • Cracks, ridges or faults • Different-colored ice, especially dark gray or black

• Ice that looks rotten or porous • Ice covered by snow, water or slush • Running water or bubbles under the ice “If you fall through the ice, turn toward the direction you came from because that’s probably the strongest ice,” Jones said. “Place your hands and arms on the unbroken surface, kick your feet, and try to pull yourself out using ice picks if you have them. Once you’re out of the water, lie flat on the ice and roll away from the hole. Get to a warm, dry, sheltered area as soon as possible and call 9-1-1.”

Frostbite and hypothermia can also pose dangers, even in mild

winter weather. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, slurred speech and loss of motor skills. Signs of frostbite, which most frequently harms extremities like fingers, toes, ears and noses, include numbness, a white or grayish-yellow skin color, or an unusual waxy feeling to skin. Keep in mind that some people are more susceptible to the cold, particularly children, the elderly and those with circulation problems.

Medical attention is necessary to treat these conditions, but dressing properly in the first place can help prevent them. Dress in layers with moisture-wicking underclothes and outer heat-retaining layers. Wool,

silk and synthetic fleece retain body heat better than cotton. Waterproof boots, thick socks, a hat, and gloves or mittens help keep extremities warm. A scarf, neck tube or facemask will keep your face warm and help cover as much exposed skin as possible. Ice traction cleats will keep you from slipping on icy trails.

It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast before heading outside, paying close attention to storm watches and warnings and wind chill warnings.

Pritzker signs bill promoting diverse workforce on capital projects ‘Illinois Works’ offers incentives for minority apprenticeships

Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed legislation Dec. 10 aimed at ensuring minority workers have access to jobs created through the state’s new $45 billion capital improvements plan, as well as access to training for careers in construction and building trades.

Senate Bill 177 establishes the Illinois Works Jobs Program, which makes $25 million available to community based organizations—including public colleges and universities—to recruit new apprentices to work on construction projects. It also provides that apprentices will make up 10 percent of the labor force on all

projects costing $500,000 or more.

The money will come from the $45 billion in capital plan funding.

The program will be overseen by the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. It is also authorized to award “bid credits”— virtual dollars that can be used when bidding on future contracts—to encourage contractors to employ “historically underrepresented populations in the construction industry,” including minorities, women and veterans.

“Rebuild Illinois is the largest, most robust capital plan in state history,” Pritzker said at a bill signing ceremony in Chicago. “We’re work-

ing with our partners to make sure every community in the state benefits from these good jobs, especially those who’ve been left out and left behind for far too long.”

Language of the program was inserted into a Senate-passed bill in the House during the fall veto session.

Rep. Will Davis, a Democrat from the south Chicago suburb of Homewood, was the leading sponsor of the amendment in the House.

“Several of those communities are in the 30th District and the south suburbs,” he said. “So I’m pleased to have the opportunity to do something in Springfield that is going to directly benefit the people that I serve and

that I represent out in the south suburbs.”

Sen. Napoleon Harris III, a Democrat from the south suburb of Harvey and the lead sponsor in the Senate, said he believes the program will pay dividends for years to families that traditionally have not had access to skilled construction jobs.

“These careers are going to be not only paychecks but health insurance,

pensions, sustainable living opportunity to raise your family,” he said.

“This is why this measure is so important, because now we have more people involved in this process, who were historically underrepresented.”

The final version of the bill passed the House on Nov. 13 by a vote of 82-32. The Senate concurred with the changes the following day, 36-6.

The law takes effect Jan. 1.

Sixth DUI nets man 14 years behind bars DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin recently announced that Judge John Kinsella has sentenced Nazim Useni, 58, of Elk Grove Village, to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections following his sixth drunk-driving conviction.

On Sept. 19, following a two-daylong trial, a jury found Useni guilty of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, a Class X felony.

On Jan. 28, at approximately 1:47 a.m., an Itasca police officer conducted a speeding traffic stop on the

vehicle Useni was driving.

During the stop, Useni could not produce a valid driver’s license and smelled of alcohol. The officer transported Useni back to the police station where he showed signs of impairment during his field sobriety tests.

After obtaining a search warrant for Useni’s blood, it was determined that his BAC was 0.19. Additionally, when Useni was pulled over by the police, he was currently on parole from a twelve-year sentence he received from his fifth DUI.

“Time and time again, Mr. Useni thumbed his nose at the law and continued to drink and drive,” Berlin said. “Not only did he get behind the wheel after his first DUI, but he did so as well after his fifth DUI. Every year thousands of lives are needlessly lost to DUI related crashes.

Thankfully, no one was injured as a result of Mr. Useni’s irresponsible, reckless behavior. With ride sharing services as prevalent as they are today, there is no reason whatsoever for anyone to drive after they have been drinking.”

Number of parties suing Sterigenics jumps to 73

The number of parties suing medical supply sterilization company Sterigenics on claims that its ethylene oxide gas emissions caused serious health problems grew to 73 this week, according to a law firm representing 18 of the plaintiffs.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, chronic exposure to ethylene oxide gas can cause increased cancer risks, reproductive effects and other major medical problems. Sterigenics used the chemical to sterilize medical supplies at its Chicago-area Willowbrook facility for more than 30 years.

In September, Sterigenics announced it was closing its Willowbrook facility amid mounting pressure from lawmakers and activists from the area.

lease at the time it could “not reach an agreement to renew the lease on its Quincy Street facility in Willowbrook in the present environment,” and blamed an “unstable legislative and regulatory landscape in Illinois” for its decision not to reopen.

The Chicago law firm Romanucci & Blandin announced in a news release Thursday that there are 22 new lawsuits against “Sterigenics and other parties responsible for causing leukemia, lymphoma, breast cancer, miscarriages and other medical conditions.”

Antonio Romanucci, a founding partner at the firm, said the “other parties” include Sotera Health LLC, which is Sterigenics’ parent company; GTCR LLC, which is a hedge fund with an ownership interest in the company; and a maintenance supervisor and operations manager from the site.

The defendants vary by individual suit depending on the dates of exposure and diagnosis, he said.

“The magnitude of this case is evident by the growing number of families that have been devastated over the last three decades by Sterigenics’ negligence, and we will not rest until we secure justice for the wrongdoings of this company in our community,” Romanucci said in the release.

He said plaintiffs include people who live in, have lived in or had contact with the surrounding municipalities of Willowbrook, Burr Ridge, Darien and Hinsdale.

“Some have since moved to other parts of Illinois, but at some point from 1984 to 2019 they had contacts with the Willowbrook area (whether it be work, school, or home),” he said in an email.

Romanucci is the court-appointed lead counsel for a legal group that

is working together for pre-trial and discovery purposes on behalf of the growing lists of plaintiffs, he said.

There are more than 20 firms representing those 73 plaintiffs, and Romanucci said a judge ordered “any case involving similar allegations against Sterigenics be consolidated” in Cook County Circuit Court.

The suit is not class-action;ß however, and each case will be tried individually. Romanucci said the consolidation of pre-trial and discovery processes was for efficiency purposes.

“For instance, requesting information about Sterigenics’ operations or determining the harmful effects of (ethylene oxide) are both issues that will impact all cases. Therefore, they are brought together under one consolidated case to save time and resources,” he said in an email. “Specific issues (i.e. an individual’s diagnosis, an individual’s treatment, an

individual’s exposure) will be handled separately.”

In its news release and in a legal consent order undertaken with the state and DuPage County in September, Sterigenics never admitted any wrongdoing.

“Sterigenics appreciates that the State of Illinois has clearly acknowledged the company’s consistent record of regulatory compliance as well as the safety of the new controls we agreed to implement, and we made every effort to reach a constructive resolution,” the company said in the release.

“Unfortunately, inaccurate and unfounded claims regarding Sterigenics and the unstable legislative and regulatory landscape in Illinois have created an environment in which it is not prudent to maintain these critical sterilization operations in Willowbrook.”

IDPH investigating Legionnaires’ disease cases possibly linked to a DuPage County hospital The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), along with the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD), is investigating three cases of Legionnaires’ disease in individuals who were patients at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital.

One individual was an inpatient, and the second and third individuals had outpatient visits. These patients could have acquired the infection at the hospital, but they also had other possible sources of exposure during the 10 days before they started show-

ing symptoms.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends public health officials conduct a full investigation into the source of Legionella in a health care facility after identifying two or more cases possibly associated with the facility within 12 months of each other.

IDPH is working with DCHD and the hospital to collect information and further investigate these cases, which will include another on-site visit by IDPH to test the facility’s water. Central DuPage Hospital is

working with IDPH to strengthen its water management plan and implement multiple control measures.

The hospital has also taken actions outlined in its water management plan, including flushing the plumbing system.

The hospital is working to provide information to potentially impacted patients and employees about Legionella.

The bacteria can become a health concern when they grow and spread in human-made water systems, like hot tubs, cooling towers, hot water tanks, large plumbing systems, and decorative fountains. Most healthy people do not get Legionnaires’ disease after being exposed to Legionella bacteria.
