Jolly Old St. Nick concert draws crowd to YPC

Community gathers on Wilder Mansion steps to celebrate diversity

On Dec. 6, more than 200 people braved the frigid evening temperature in Wilder Park to attend a candlelight vigil organized by Elmhurst residents Susan Warren, Lisa O’Halloran, Vicky Amaro and Laura Hamilton. Gathering on the steps of Wilder Mansion under the banner “LOVE LIVES HERE,” the vigil was an opportunity to demonstrate support for individuals of all races, religions, orientations and countries of origins, and to reaffirm that Elmhurst is a community where all are welcome.

“The goal of the vigil is to celebrate diversity in a peaceful celebration of our differences and all that binds us together as a community,” stated organizer Susan Warren, who was the first to address the crowd. She rallied the crowd by saying, “When Elmhurst values something, then Elmhurst shows up!”

Vigil attendees were offered homemade cookies, donated by Cookies for Peace, and hot chocolate, donated by Pilot Pete’s Coffee and Treats, as they enjoyed

While each speaker touched on different point, each provided a positive message of hope to the crowd -- a message that tolerance, acceptance and love can exist despite differences, diversity, and disabilities. Particularly inspiring was Reverend Paton who reminded the crowd to think about their words.

“Words have the power to hurt and destroy,” she said. “Use your words for good, for justice, for healing, for bridge building, for love, for truth and to honor

our differences.” The crowd endorsed her message with applause.

The event also included moving vocal performances by Timothy Flynn and Raven Anne Quigley, and a lively dance performed by York High School’s Spanish Heritage Dancers, choreographed by Lessly Diego.

Neighbors on Fremont St. protested the expansion of Elmhurst Extended Care facility on 200 E. Lake St., which is poised to use three vacant lots on the otherwise residential street.

Facility employees and medical personnel, as well as a real estate appraiser and an attorney, spoke in favor of the expansion of eleven rooms and a parking lot with an access controlled gate during the longer than three-hour meeting on Dec. 8. They stated that it was a well-run facility, but there needed to be some private rooms, rather than those with three or four occupants.

The case before the ZPC began at a Nov. 24th meeting where the applicant presented its case to a packed house in Council Chambers.

The public hearing was closed but the record was left open so people could submit more written material.

Neighbors protested that the commercial facility should not be allowed to expand in a residential neighborhood. They said if approved, the ruling would produce a decrease in property values and would set a dangerous precedent for other areas in Elmhurst.

They said that there would be vehicular traffic problems and that children would not be safe and secure riding their bicycles in the area. Neighbors said the area was not a transitional one and that many people had lived there for a long time.

The applicant attorney, Scott Day, stated the facility is a residential use for disabled people, not a commercial one.

Also, he said property values would not decrease because new houses in the $600,000 price range were being built in the neighborhood.

Darrell Whistler, chairman of the ZPC, pointed out that the two-night public hearing was “not a one-night stand.” After more deliberation, the ZPC will issue a report at a later date, which will eventually come before City Council.

“Our job is to look at the zoning issues such as the height of buildings and setbacks,” he said.

A ZPC report will be sent to the City Council, which will refer the matter to the Development, Planning and Zoning (DPZ) committee of three aldermen who will make a recommendation to the full City Council, which has the final say on the matter.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Battery

Dec. 4 Michael S. Koski, 50, of Elmhurst, was arrested in the 600 block of S. York St. at around 8 a.m. Police said a victim related that she and Koski are neighbors and had been drinking the night prior. According to police, when Koski woke up in her apartment, he punched her twice and left. Police said officers went to speak with Koski, who was intoxicated. He was charged with battery.

Criminal damage or defacement to property/ vehicle/criminal trespass to property/vehicle/ damage to property

Dec. 7 An officer responded to Sleepy Hollow Park at around 4:07 p.m. for a damage-to-property report. A complainant stated that a teal-colored Jeep with a loud muffler was doing doughnuts in the grass and then fled eastbound at a high rate of speed. The officer observed deep tire impressions in the grass/dirt, damaging the lawn.

Dec. 4-Dec. 5 A victim at Atrium Way told police at around 10 a.m. that she noticed feces on her vehicle while parked outside her home overnight. The victim also noticed one of her wiper blades had been broken in half.

Dec. 3 Robert F. Cunningham, 47, of Chicago, was arrested in the 200 block of E. Schiller at around 3:31 a.m. According to police, a victim stated that Cunningham entered his residence without permission. Police said Cunningham was found to be intoxicated, and stated he believed he was entering his friend’s home. He was charged with criminal trespass to a residence and disorderly conduct.

Dec. 1 Phillip Wordlaw, 52, of Bellwood, was arrested at a bank in the 200 block of E. Butterfield at around 12:21 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a complaint of a trespassing in progress, it was found that Wordlaw had been previously served with a trespass notice prohibiting him from entering the property. He was charged with criminal trespass to property,

Disorderly conduct

Dec. 2 Police said that it was found two students had engaged in a physical fight at a high school in the 300 block of W. St. Charles Road at around 9:30 a.m. The fight was broken up and the two participants were charged with disorderly conduct.

Domestic incident, domestic battery

Dec. 7 Officials at a school in the 900 block of Riverside Drive reported at around 8:40 a.m. that a suspect appeared along the victim’s school bus route intending to remove the victim from the school bus. School officials intervened and later learned that the suspect is the victim’s non-custodial mother who resides in Missou-

CALL 800-222-TIPS ri. The victim’s custodial father was contacted and reported to the school. Both parents confirmed that the victim attends the school per mutual agreement of the parents. The suspect was advised to remedy the matter through the court system.

DUI, illegal consumption or possession of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation/possession of open alcohol, possession/delivery of a controlled substance

Dec. 5 Peter J. Bradford, 43, of Elmhurst, was arrested near southbound York and Lexington at around 8:44 a.m. and charged with DUI and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident subsequent to a traffic crash.

Dec. 4 • Juliana McDonnell, 21, of Elmhurst, was arrested near West and Third at around 12:51 a.m. and charged with DUI, speeding, improper lane usage and no insurance following a traffic stop.

• Erykah Miles, 19, of Chicago, was issued a citation by police near North and Addison at around 1:15 a.m. for consumption of alcohol by a minor. Police said Miles was a passenger in the back seat of a vehicle that was stopped by police because the driver reportedly had disobeyed a traffic control device, for which the driver was issued a citation.

• Edward Pointdujour, 32, of Hodgkins, was arrested near North and Indiana at around 2:11 a.m. and charged with DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance following a traffic stop.

• Glenda Williams, 27, of Carol Stream, was arrested near North and West at around 1:32 a.m. and charged with DUI, improper lane usages and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle following a traffic stop.

Dec. 3 Voltaire Alanguilan, 30, of Elmhurst, was arrested near York and Diversey at around 12:22 a.m. and charged with DUI and violated median following a traffic stop.

Dec. 1 Karl Obien, 35, of Darien, was arrested in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 11:11 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a check on well-being, Obien was found to be asleep in the driver’s seat with the vehicle running. He was charged with DUI.

Possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia

Dec. 7 Gianna M. Bernardo, 21, of Winfield, was issued a citation by police near West and Fellows at around 12:02 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, an officer detected

an odor of cannabis emitting from Bernardo’s vehicle. The officer searched the vehicle and located a cannabis grinder, according to police. Bernardo was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding.

Dec. 4 Alondra Campos, 18, of Bensenville, was arrested near York and Lake at around 12:35 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Campos, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be in possession of cannabis. She was charged with possession of cannabis and released. The driver, a juvenile, was found to be in violation of the Graduated Driver License section and was charged with no valid driver’s license and driving without headlights when required. She was cited and released on scene.

Dec. 3 • Adam Crocetti, 31, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation by police near Cottage Hill and Park Avenue at around 2:54 p.m. Police said a patron of a food store observed a man place a small child in the back of a work van and drive away. According to police, an odor of cannabis was emitting from the vehicle, and during a search, cannabis and paraphernalia were located. Crocetti was cited for the possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

• Robert Halloran, 20, of Chicago, and Adem Tufekcioglu, 20, of Romeoville, were issued citations by police near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 1:10 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Halloran and Tufekcioglu were found to be in possession of cannabis. Halloran was cited for possession of cannabis, speeding and no insurance, while Tufekcioglu was cited for possession of cannabis.

Dec. 2 • Vincent Kabat, 19, of Morton Grove, and Timothy Thompson, 19, of Deerfield, were issued citations by police near Prospect and Alexander at around 1:39 a.m. Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, the suspects were found to be in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. Thompson was cited for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. Kabat was cited for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and improper lane usage.

• Police said they located a suspicious auto in the 600 block of Commonwealth at around 7:49 p.m. Before the officer could make contact, the driver reportedly fled in the vehicle and later crashed into the fence just north of Riverside and Route 83/Frontage. The juvenile driver was taken into custody and was found to be in possession of cannabis. He was charged with fleeing and eluding, possession of cannabis, two counts of improper lane usage, two counts of disobeying a stop sign, speeding and no insurance and released to his parents.

Suspicious circumstances

Dec. 7 A complainant at a bank in the 200 block of E. Butterfield told police at around 6 p.m. that they received three phone calls, possibly from a suspect who was given a no trespass notice. The complainant is concerned because the suspect is bothering one of their tellers. An officer attempted to contact the suspect with no results.

Dec. 2 Police said on the morning of Nov. 30, a complaint noticed fresh damage in the southeast portion of a church parking lot in the 100 block of W. Butterfield. On the above date, a suspect described as an Hispanic male of average height, very heavy set, wearing a hat, a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark pants, knocked on the church door and offered to fix the damage in the parking lot. The church secretary declined the work. The suspect, who was accompanied by two other suspects described as Hispanic males, reportedly became

very pushy and offered a significant discount.

Again, the secretary declined the work and the suspect left the area.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Dec. 7 A victim’s video surveillance in the 900 block of Cedar showed that an unknown male entered three unlocked vehicles parked on his driveway overnight. The victim reports that a $5 bill and some loose change were taken.

While canvassing the area in reference to the above incident, an officer found another victim’s vehicle with its contents disturbed. The victim stated he left his vehicle unlocked overnight and was missing approximately $5 in loose change from his car.

Dec. 6 • Robert Thornton, 38, and Javis Shell, 34, both of Chicago, were arrested in the 200 block of W. Grand at around 8:25 p.m. Police said that subsequent to an identity theft in progress, both Thornton and Shell admitted to using a website to purchase false Social Security numbers and drivers licenses with different birth dates to purchase vehicles. According to police, Shell bought a Dodge Durango on Dec. 1 and came back later to buy another vehicle on the above date at a local car dealership. Car dealership employees learned that both credits were a fraud and contacted the police. Thornton was charged with felony theft and obstructing identification. Shell was charged with felony theft.

• A victim in the 100 block of Route 83 told police that between 12:15 and 1:15 p.m., an unknown suspect(s), entered his “possibly” unlocked minivan. An iPhone 6 was taken from the center console and two backpacks containing laptop computers, and other miscellaneous items were taken as well.

Dec. 3 • Jennifer Menendez, 34, of Bensenville, was arrested at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 11:55 p.m. Police said officers responded for a reported retail theft where loss prevention was following Menendez, who told loss prevention that she had a gun after she took more than $300 in merchandise and left without paying. According to police, she was taken into custody and was found to be wanted out of the Illinois State Police Department. She was charged with felony retail theft, aggravated assault, possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license suspended.

• Lloyd Weaver Jr., 61, of Maywood, was arrested near St. Charles Road and Fair at around 3:43 p.m. Police said that during a traffic stop for expired registration, Weaver Jr. was found to have a suspended license, but an officer also learned the registration sticker belonged on another vehicle. The suspect was placed under arrest and taken to the police station. While there, police said a glass crack pipe and Chore Boy were located in his personal property. According to police, Weaver Jr. admitted to stealing the registration sticker and was charged with felony possession of a stolen sticker, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, expired registration and no insurance.

• A victim in the 500 block of N. Emory Ave. told police at around 8:46 a.m. that an unknown suspect(s) stole his unlocked minivan with the keys in the ignition, from the above location. Inside the vehicle was a GPS, radar

• A complainant told police she was at a food store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 3:20 p.m. to do some grocery shopping for her mother and to pick up her mother’s medication. When the complainant was checking out, she could not find the medication. The store was checked with no results. The complainant believes that an unknown suspect(s) must have taken the medication from the cart.

Dec. 2 A victim told police that between 7:30 and 8 a.m., his aluminum ladder was taken from his front yard. The victim was hanging Christmas lights and left the ladder leaning against a tree in the parkway. He then went inside and when he returned the ladder was gone.

Dec. 1-Dec. 2 Theft was reported in the 500 block of N. Van Auken. A complainant told police that sometime overnight that a baby Jesus decoration in the front yard was stolen and another Christmas decoration was damaged.

Dec. 1 • Melissa Lundin, 20, of Portage, Mich., and Kerry Bernardien-Vandril Swain, 20, of Plainwell, Mich., were arrested in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 11:07 p.m. Police said that while conducting a bar check, the two suspects were waiting in line to come into the bar, became aware of the police presence and quickly exited the line and began walking northbound on Addison. Contact was made with the suspects who, according to police, were found to be in possession of fraudulent IDs and to have been drinking alcohol. They were both charged with possession of a fraudulent ID and consumption of alcohol by a minor.

• A victim in the 200 block of S. Villa Ave. told police that they answered a knock at the door and a person described as a young female with a dark complexion, about 20-21 years old, 5’2”, 110 pounds with dark hair wearing a black cap and a black jacket distracted the victim while another person went through the house stealing jewelry and prescription medication. The victim reported that they spoke a different language and didn’t know what it was. They left in an unknown direction in a vehicle described as a black SUV. • A victim at a college in the 100 block of S. Prospect told police at around 1:08 p.m. that she was selling her phone for $200 on E-bay. The victim shipped the phone and then received an e-mail for payment of $400. The suspect told the victim it was a mistake and to send back the

extra money. The victim realized that the original $400 never was deposited her account. The victim was unable to intercept the phone before it was delivered.

• A victim in the 600 block of Mary Court told police at around 6:15 p.m. that an unknown suspect had fraudulently opened and used a credit card in her name at Saks Fifth Ave in Miami.

Nov. 2-Nov. 18 A victim at a building company in the 300 block of N. York told police she was going through bank records and noticed there were withdrawals she did not authorize made between the above dates.

The check numbers corresponded to legitimate checks they used for business purposes, but the checks were made out to a subject whom she does not know. The bank account has been frozen.

Dec. 1 Richard Morris, 79, of Elmhurst, was arrested near West and St. Charles at around 10:18 a.m. Police said Morris was wanted on an original warrant by Illinois State Police and also cited for no seat belt following a traffic stop.

Lombard man arrested

On Dec. 1, Mark Peters, 32, of Lombard, was arrested in the 100 block of S. York at around 8:54 p.m.

Police said that officers were dispatched to a bar in the area for a fight in progress. Upon arrival, the victim told police that he was working as a DJ at the bar when Peters allegedly walked up to him and struck him in the face, causing a small red mark.

Police said Peters also grabbed another bar employee while exiting the bar. According to police, Peters was located, video surveillance was reviewed and he was charged with two counts of battery.

Intoxicated strangers build snowman in yard

A victim in the 200 block of E. First St. told police at around 8:55 p.m. on Dec. 5 that when she left her residence in the morning she noticed a snowman that had been built outside of her front door.

The victim noticed the snowman appeared to have been stabbed using another tree branch and the snow was colored to represent blood.

The victim’s son stated that some time overnight, he heard several possibly intoxicated students of college age outside. When the son looked outside they were making a snowman.

You may have missed our holiday letter last year because we didn’t send one. We weren’t trying to be naughty and I hope our lack of communication didn’t get us knocked off your Christmas card list. In case it did, I am sending our greetings early this year so you will have time to fire off a card to us after receiving ours.

Our lack of holiday note last year was due to a family vacation. You may have seen the 547 photos we posted on Facebook chronicling our adventure.

It was an exhausting trip. I spent so much time taking and posting pictures I hardly had the chance to enjoy the beach or my family.

I planned to send a card out after the New Year, but since I took the time off for vacation, I had to play catch up with work. Luckily the trip gave me lots of writing ideas. You probably read about some of them here.

I thought about sending a Valentine’s letter, but one of the kids caught the flu. Then another. And another.

Life gets busy, complicated By

And so on. By the time it was time for me to get sick, the entire long month of February had passed and March was marching in like a lion.

This year, we’re all getting flu shots.

Maybe you saw the statistics I posted about the efficacy of immunizations.

I considered sending a spring greetings card, but we had toilet and laundry issues and I didn’t think anyone would want to read about them – although they did make for column fodder. I’m not sure about the logic there and probably don’t want to go into a big explanation. Let’s just say we are glad to be flushing again.

Before I knew it, June rolled around and we were planning for high school graduation. (Yes, they let number three graduate!) I sent out announcements, and surely hope you received one. Still, a simple graduation announcement cannot take the place of an informative holiday card, so my apology continues.

After high school comes real life.

Or in our case, a wedding. Not for the graduate, but for his big sister. I would have sent out a late summer holiday greeting, but for the plethora of tasks involved with planning a wedding.

(That’s a letter in and of itself.) Hopefully you were able to check out the 1000+ photos we posted on Facebook.

It would have been hard to narrow them down to a few hundred; it was such a big, big day. I now consider myself an expert in cupcake preparations.

After the wedding I took a few weeks to recover and eat leftover cake. Besides, school was starting and I had to buy a bunch of glue, number 2

I help the kids prepare for class and the critters prepare for winter.

As the autumn leaves were blowing, I (along with the rest of the nation) found myself in the middle of a highly-contested, highly-opinionated election season. I got so tied up in being swayed and influenced by online political articles (fake and true), postings and rants that I missed my last best chance to get last year’s holiday letter in the mail.

That brings me to present day and I guess I officially missed the holiday

note last year because it is now this year. In 2016 we’ve been good. We had a graduation and a wedding, which you probably already figured out. We added a son-on-law to our family and are planning another trip in the near future.

Don’t worry. I’ll post photos. Lots of photos. Keep an eye out for them.

McHale Productions and Navarro Catering and Events is bringing Sister B’s Bingo Bonanza to Elmhurst for another one-night-only dinner theater experience.

After stints in Chicago, Milwaukee, New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Caribbean, Sister B’s Bingo Bonanza has become a popular hit. The play tells the story of Sister B who is running the hottest bingo game in town. One day she awakes to discover her bingo board has been mysteriously broken, which throws her parish into ruin and her into the streets. Ever the hopeful nun, Sister B enlists Father Martini and Sister Cherisse to organize a traveling bingo game to help regain what was lost.

While Herren could not tell the students where every addict’s story ends, he did tell them where it begins.

“The first page of every addict’s story starts with a red Solo cup [alcohol] and a blunt [marijuana].”

The former NBA player went on to tell the students how it began for him, a star basketball player who grew up in a town like Elmhurst. He was a tough kid and a popular kid with a lot of pressure on him. That pressure led him to drinking even though he made a promise to himself that he never would because his father was an alcoholic.

“Freshman year I started drinking my dad’s beer on Friday nights,” he recalled. He told the students that some parents condoned drinking and smoking pot and let them know that they were “safe to do it in their basement.”

He admitted that while he and his friends were partying in the basement, they never thought they were starting their path to addiction, even though he knew what he was doing was wrong. When he saw his athlete friends who never drank, being teased as outcasts and not invited to parties, he would think, “those kids have something special that I’m missing. They can hang out and have fun without drinking. Their parents know who they are.”

He knew it would break his parents’ hearts if they knew who he really was.

Herren called out to the York students: “I know there are kids in this gym who are struggling. Kids are embarrassed for you, feel sorry and are worried for you. You’re not close to being the kid you could be. Think of the kid you grew up with that doesn’t drink or smoke on weekends.

You’re probably thinking, ‘How come I have to do all this stuff and he doesn’t. Why is he so comfortable

and I’m not?’”

Herren challenged the kids to be themselves when they are in the basement with their friends. “Fight the hurdles, say ‘I can be me.’ – period,” he said. “I never walked into my house any weekend and said ‘you must be so proud of yourself, Chris, for doing drugs tonight.’ I never felt comfortable lying to my parents and I could never be myself.”

He urged the York students to say, “I should be better than I am. I’m doing things I promised my parents I’d never do.”

It’s about whether or not they can be themselves anymore, Herren said. He asked them to walk out of the gym and challenge themselves to be better, to lean on each other and help one another.

Some kids have told him that they

drink, smoke and party because it helps them forget, Herren said. It makes them feel they are not afraid.

He believes that part of the problem is that parents turn a blind eye or don’t confront kids because they don’t want their kids to be “real” with them. They don’t want their kids to tell them that they are anxious

More points made by Chris Herren Herren made the following points in his community presentation, attended by nearly 900: • For an addict, it’s not about your worst day; it’s about your first day – Herren emphasized over and over that the path to addiction begins with small compromises that can ultimately grow into fullblown addiction.

• The first page of any addict’s story begins with using alcohol and/or weed. Herren abused alcohol, cocaine, prescription drugs and heroin. He drank vodka to help him “forget” that he was disappointing his family, his fans and himself. His opioid (oxycodone) use became so expensive that he turned to heroin, which was cheaper and easier to obtain • But he paid an even higher price, considering that his addiction eventually led him to lose a lucrative and valued career playing professional basketball with the Denver Nuggets, the Boston Celtics and an Italian team that recruited him to play in Europe. In high school and college, he was one of the most up-and-coming young hoop stars many had ever seen. He was a hometown hero who fell from grace and eventually became completely disgraced.

• He almost lost his family on multiple occasions, saying “My wife and I knew each other since we were 12 years old. I broke her heart a million times.” More than once, he thought about ending his life.

An addictions counselor advised him to leave his family and never go back, to urge his wife to tell their children that he had died in a car accident.

• A car accident would have been easy to believe. Four times he overdosed. He was brought back to life several times with the administration of Narcan®, which is known as the opiate antidote.

Once, he could feel himself suffering the effects of an overdose and drove his car out of his hometown, not wanting to be found there, only to crash into a fence outside a cemetery with the needle still hanging in his arm.

“The EMTs pronounced me dead. I was dead for 30 seconds. A police officer grabbed me by the throat, threw me down on the gurney and brought me back. That police officer, who I went to high school with, saved my life because the EMTs had pronounced me dead and were willing to walk away.”

• “And to the kids who are choosing not to drink and smoke…we don’t give them enough credit. They are often ostracized and made fun of by their peers, yet they are the ones courageous enough to be themselves.”

• He told a story about being talked into trying cocaine by his roommate’s girlfriend on his first day at Boston College. After his speech a young girl in the audience asked him what he would do if he had the chance to do that day over again, to which he answered, “I wouldn’t drink my father’s beer at 14 years old. You see, I was already on that path.” First day, not the worst day.

• A man asked him if he received more breaks and was given more chances, due to his high-profile status. “More chances and more torture, because it just prolonged the process of my hitting bottom,” Herren said.

Elmhurst College President surprises newly-admitted students VanAken visits two high schools, congratulates students on early acceptance

Five high school students who had just been accepted to Elmhurst College got an unexpected visit at school the next day—from the College’s president and its furry-feathered mascot.

Elmhurst College President Troy D. VanAken and mascot Victor E. Bluejay recently went to York Community High School in Elmhurst as well as Proviso Mathematics & Science Academy in Forest Park to personally congratulate the students on being admitted early to the College.

President VanAken presented each student with a Bluejay Box, which contained the letter of acceptance and scholarship offer, an Elmhurst College skullcap, a “pop-up” snow-cube and more.

“That’s so cool!” York High School senior Jenna Garcia said as she opened the box. “This was really a

surprise—at first I thought I’d been called to the office because I was in trouble or something.” Garcia is a member of the York Symphony Orchestra and also belongs to a group that provides music therapy at a local stroke recovery center in Elmhurst. She plans to study music education when she starts college next fall.

At York, President VanAken also gave senior Sarah Anil a Bluejay Box. Anil, who emigrated to the U.S. from India and began at York as an English Language Learner student, now will be graduating with honors and plans to study nursing in college.

“We wanted to congratulate our newly admitted students, and this has been a great way for us to catch and share their excitement,” VanAken said. “It’s also been a fun way for us to start getting to know some of the students we hope to see on campus next fall.”

Nearly all of the early-admission students who got the surprise visit from President VanAken will be the first in their families to attend college.

“I think the visit is a wonderful way to celebrate and share this really big moment,” said Amy Thompson, college and career counselor at York. “What a great thing to do—I love it!”

Edison fourth graders take on Oil Spill Challenge

According to a release from Elmhurst School District 205, fourth grade students at Edison Elementary recently participated in an activity in the Library Media Center’s new “makerspace,” called the Edison Studio.

A makerspace is defined as a place where people can gather to create,

invent and learn. It supports a culture of creativity and discovery in education.

Fourth grade students took on the “Oil Spill Challenge,” a simulation that gave them the opportunity to experiment with ways to clean up the effects of an oil spill, similar to the Exxon Valdez or Deepwater Horizon disasters. This activity tied in with a 4th grade science unit.

Health Dept. urges shots during Vaccinate Illinois Week

The DuPage County Health Department urges anyone who has not yet received influenza (flu) vaccine this season to get it as soon as possible.

Flu activity typically peaks between December and February in the United States, and the season can last as late as May. While there’s still time to benefit from a flu shot, the sooner you get vaccinated, the more likely you are to be protected against the flu when activity picks up in your community.

Every season, flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths. Even healthy people can get sick from the flu. A yearly flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against influenza disease. Flu shots are available at physician offices, pharmacies, and quick care clinics throughout DuPage County.

Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits, and missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations and deaths.

In addition to getting a flu shot, take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs: • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

• If you are sick with flu-like illness, you should stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medicine) except to get medical care.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Influenza antiviral drugs can be a second line of defense for treatment of some who get sick with flu and can lessen the duration and severity of symptoms.

Conroy encourages residents to join Citizen Advisory Committees To better engage the community in the legislative process, state Rep. Deb Conroy, D-Villa Park, is inviting residents to join one of her Citizen Advisory Committees to provide their input on important state issues and brainstorm ideas for legislation.

York boys basketball team continues winning ways

Gray strikes for 23 points in victory against East Aurora

The York boys basketball team pushed its record to 5-1 overall with a pair of recent wins.

The Dukes were 46-43 winners on the road at Glenbard West in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division game.

Jordan Gray led the Dukes with 14 points and four rebounds. He shot 5-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Nick Trapani had nine points, while Nick Kosich and Erik Cohn each had seven points. York shot only 35 percent from the field, but hit 12 of 18 free throws (66.7 percent). Glenbard West attempted only seven throws.

York trailed 21-20 at halftime, but took a 34-33 lead into the fourth quarter.

Trapani hit three 3-pointers in the game. York made six threes all together. Kosich had four steals, while Trapani and Cohn each had two steals.

“Glenbard West was a real tough game,” said York coach Vince Doran.

“All the conference games are going to be pretty tough this year. It was a good win on the road. It was back and forth and the lead changed numerous times. Glenbard West is better than I thought they would be. They had lost guys from last year. It was a very tight game most of the way. A big key is we had eight steals and those were steals where we converted into opportunities on the offensive end. It was nice to see us create offense with our defense. We didn’t shoot the ball as well as we normally do, but give Glenbard West credit. They played tough defense. We played tough defense as well. We turned them over 19 times and it’s really good to turn a team over that many times. That gave us extra possessions and that was the key to us pulling the win out.”

York then downed East Aurora in a non-conference game by a 6242 count in Aurora. York led 16-11 after the first quarter and 29-19 at halftime. The lead doubled to 49-29 after three.

Gray led the Dukes with 23 points and five rebounds. He shot 10-for13 from the floor and was 2-for-2 on 3-point attempts. Cohn added 12 points, while Trapani had 10 points and Angelo Martucci added eight points.

York shot 64.1 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point line (6-for-12).

Kosich and Trapani each had four rebounds. Kosich had six assists, while Trapani had four assists.

Kosich also had five steals. Cohn had three steals. York had 11 steals as a team and forced East Aurora into 21 turnovers.

“It was neat to play over at East Aurora at a place with a lot of history and tradition,” said Doran. “It was a fun environment to play in and we played well.”

Doran lauded Gray’s effort in the two wins. “Jordan had a nice weekend,” the coach said. “He shot 8-for11 from two against East Aurora and had 23 points. He’s a lot stronger than he was last year. He put in a lot of work in the weight room. He also has to be respected on the perimeter.

He can score points for us.”

Trapani, Kosich and Martucci also had strong games, the coach noted.

“Trap, Nick Kosich and Angelo Martucci played well against East Aurora,” Doran said.

One area Doran would like to see improvement on is turnovers. York committed 20 against East Aurora and 10 against Glenbard West.

“As a team we have to focus on reducing turnovers,” he said. “We are turning it over too much and some of them are unforced. The more we reduce them, the more we can be really competitive this year.”

York has conference games with Oak Park-River Forest and Downers Grove North on tap prior to hosting the annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic tournament after Christmas.

“I’m very happy with the start,” said Doran. “It’s a good start. We

Timothy Christian girls basketball team racks up three wins Schuringa records 18 points, 11 rebounds in win over Ridgewood

It was a great week for the Timothy Christian girls basketball team.

The Trojans made it a perfect sweep with three victories against Westmont, Ridgewood and Elmwood Park.

Timothy capped last week with a 63-25 non-conference win over Westmont.

“It was a great second half and an all-around team effort,” Trojans coach Michele Strube said.

Jordyn Strube led Timothy with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Olivia Schuringa had nine points. Allison Zeilstra had eight points, three steals and two assists. Emily DeBoer had eight points and five rebounds.

Strube also was impressed with the play of Olivia Hoekstra in the Westmont win. “I have to give Ol-

ivia the game-changer award,” she said. “Her change in pressure defense and eight steals made the second half a blowout for us. It was a good win.”

Earlier, the Trojans were 62-49 winners over Ridgewood in Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play. Schuringa had 18 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Ava Venema had 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocks. Tyra Hopson had nine points. Strube had nine points and two steals, while Zeilstra had eight points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Timothy started the week with a 50-38 non-conference win against Elmwood Park. Venema had 15 points and nine rebounds. Strube had 10 points and seven steals.

Schuringa had nine points, four rebounds and two steals, while Hoekstra had eight points, eight rebounds and three steals.

“The score didn’t reflect exactly how the game went,” said Strube of the Elmwood Park win. “We were up by more than 20 at one point. It was a good win. I was pleased with what we did a majority of the game.”

DiNovo has been pleased with Quarrie’s development thus far.

“Blake is a senior and a first-year starter,” he said. “He’s strong and is finding his own strengths as a wrestler.”

DiNovo has seen numerous areas of improvement from the team as a whole. “Technically, we are looking strongest on the mat, but really the team’s greatest strength is persistence,” he said. “The wrestlers are showing an ability to stay focused on growth throughout wins and losses.”

The coach added one area of great improvement has been “learning to keep our position and battle through difficult positions.”

DiNovo knows his team will be tested during the WSC Silver season.

“The WSC is known as a tough conference in wrestling,” he said. “On our side, we’ll look to battle as best we can with the skills we’ve developed.”

And as far as goals throughout the season, DiNovo has a key one in mind.

“Growth throughout it,” he said.

IC Catholic Prep wrestling team making strides

In the early going, there’s been no shortage of positivity coming out of the IC Catholic Prep wrestling camp.

While the Knights were 2-4 through their first six dual meets of the season, numerous individual accomplishments have first-year coach Randy Spaulding pleased.

“We’re 2-4, but improving now that we have a fuller lineup due to our state-champion football team finishing its season,” he said.

On the individual front, Joey Bianchini and Victor Vargas both were 6-0 through mid-week. Bianchini wrestles at 120 pounds, while Vargas is at 220. All six of Vargas’ wins were via pinfall. Frank Jaeger was 2-1 at 126 and freshmen Corties Draper (170) and Larry Chavez (195) both won their first varsity contests.

IC Catholic Prep finished ninth in the Metro Suburban Conference last year and took third at the Class 1A Lisle regional.

Bianchini and Vargas are the team co-captains. Bianchini, a junior, started the season ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 1A at 113 pounds by Illinois Matmen. Bianchini is a two-time state qualifier and took second at 106 last year. He also is a returning conference, regional and sectional champion.

As the first state wrestling qualifier and medalist in school history, Bianchini brought a 70-9 career record into this season. He went 42-2 last season and has a chance to threaten the 100-win mark this season as a junior.

Vargas is new to IC Catholic Prep.

He’s a returning Class 2A regional champion and went 10-6 last year.

Other returning wrestlers include sophomores Joe Bigane (152) and Kemon Reese (170). Bigane was

fourth at conference and regionals last year. Reese was fourth at regionals as well.

Key newcomers to the team include Vargas, Jaeger, Chris Johnson (Sr., 220) and Quinn Bigane (Jr., 160).

Spaulding has plenty of talent to work with in the wrestling room this season. “Our roster has more than doubled over last year, which has led to more depth,” he said. “Although we have many first-time wrestlers, most are multi-sport athletes and understand the basic fundamentals of the sport. We have many football players from our undefeated state-championship team who are eager to carry over their success onto the mat. Even the few kids who only wrestle do compete in the international wrestling styles in the offseason. All our kids are intelligent and come to practice focused, ready to learn and compete.

This makes coaching and teaching wrestling easy. Our staff is comprised of coaches who all care about the kids and have had great success at all levels of wrestling.”

Spaulding said the learning part of the sport thus far has been impressive. “All our wrestlers have quickly learned many new skills, definitely outpacing and exceeding our coaches’ expectations,” he said. “Everyone on this team has the ability to turn some heads as the season goes on and we believe that definitely will start to happen.”

Spaulding said goals this season include improving on its conference finish and making some noise in the postseason.

“We’re determined to improve on our ninth-place finish in the conference from last season,” he said. “We are determined to win our regional as a team and qualify as many wrestlers as possible to sectionals and the state finals.”

Munn named new York softball coach Previously was varsity assistant in program; also coached at Stanford and N.C. State

York didn’t have to look too far to find its new softball coach.

The school recently hired Elizabeth Munn to lead the Dukes’ program. Munn previously had been the varsity assistant to former coach Jenna Nolan, who stepped down at the end of the season to spend more time with her family.

Nolan was part of a York program as either the head coach or assistant coach that won five regional titles in a row—Munn was part of the last two.

“I’m from the area originally and I always had wanted to move back here,” said Munn of coming to York. “I thought York was a great opportunity.

It was a great opportunity to get back into highschool coaching and high-school athletics in general.

York is a great school and Elmhurst is a wonderful community. I’m definitely happy to be where I’m at.”

Munn and Nolan both attended and played at Andrew High School in Tinley Park.

“I was older than Jenna. We never were on the same team,” said Munn. “She was a fantastic pitcher.

I knew a lot about her. When she was a freshman, I was a senior. Her and I got along well. I’m losing a good friend in the program. We complemented each other very well. She had very strong points with pitching and I took care of things such as the outfield and hitting. Her being gone is a definite loss. We’re rebuilding the program with new coaches coming in and new players. She will be missed for sure.”

Munn is no stranger to softball coaching. After playing at Indiana University and James Cook

University in Australia, Munn coached at the college level at Stanford (Calif.), North Carolina State and South Suburban College, and at the high-school level at Lockport.

“Coaching at the college level was a great opportunity for me,” she said. “At Stanford, the opportunity presented itself to work in the sportsperformance department and I helped out as an assistant coach. It was awesome. College is a whole different world in terms of coaching. I learned so much and had a wonderful experience.”

Munn said she’s thankful for the time she spent on Nolan’s staff at York. “Your first year as a head coach is hard for anybody,” she said. “I was able to get some good experience with Jenna. I know the community and the school and girls. All of that definitely will be beneficial.”

And Munn is taking over a program that has been ripe with success for an extended period of time.

“We’ve had a really strong group of kids,” she said. “A lot of that credit has to go to the community.

These girls are involved in a lot of feeder programs and the girls in our program have played with a lot of programs outside York. The girls do a lot of outside work. A lot of people have had a hand in giving us a strong base of athletes and we’ve continued to build on that.”

Munn said fundamentals will continue to be stressed. “We’re focused on growing stronger,” she said. “In terms of our conference, it’s so tough with pitching. We’re going to grow stronger and work on things like pitch selection. We’ll work hard on our hitting and defensively we’ll work from the ground up and develop the basics.”

York girls bowling coach Katie Turnbull has plenty of reasons to be optimistic after the Dukes’ first two tournaments of the season.

York opened the 2016-2017 season by taking seventh at the Plainfield Central tournament. The Dukes took 17th and ninth there the previous two years.

“It’s our best start to the season yet. I take that as a very good sign for things to come,” said Turnbull.

At Plainfield Central, junior Lauren Gould led the Dukes with a 1,065 series, which included high games of 203, 193, 191, 175 and 171. She had three-game series’ of 549 and 516.

Gould finished 18th individually.

Senior Jessica Cwik was 21st with a 1,060 series. She finished the day with games of 184, 175 and 209 (568 series). She rolled a 184 game in the morning.

Junior Carly Laurx had a 980 series with high games of 179, 169 and 168. Senior Jenny Diamond had a 955 series with high games of 184, 182 and 172. Nora O’Brien, a junior, had a 486 three-game series with a high game of 182, while sophomore Krystyna Panek had a 450 three-game series with a high game of 161.

The Dukes then finished second at

the Rich East tournament. York’s JV team was third at Rich East.

Cwik, Gould and Laurx finished in the Top 10 at Rich East, while Panek was in the Top 10 in the JV field. Cwik rolled a 1,103 series, while Gould had a 1,102 series. Cwik and Gould are the team captains “and leaders of the team,” said Turnbull.

York is coming off a 2015-2016 season where it went 5-2 in the West Suburban Conference and took third (tied for second record-wise).

Diamond, juniors O’Brien and Lauren Steck and sophomore Panek are key newcomers to the bowling team. “They all have made huge strides in the off-season. We are excited to see how they will do throughout the year,” said Turnbull.

Turnbull also has strength in numbers at the JV level. “We have an awesome field of freshmen this year,” she said. “It’s our biggest freshman class yet and they are improving immensely each day in practice. They are the future of the program so they are very important to me. I love watching them improve each day.”

Turnbull added experience is on York’s side. “We have a lot of returning girls who know what it takes to be successful,” she said. “We have goals we want to meet, winning conference, winning regionals for a third straight year and qualifying for state,” she said. “We have the talent to accomplish that. A combination of experience and talent is a great sign

for things to come this season. This team is focused. Each day they practice with a purpose and are constantly trying to improve. They are fierce competitors in that respect.”

Turnbull has high hopes for the continued success of the Dukes bowling program this season. “Jim Hedman (assistant coach) and myself feel very optimistic,” said Turnbull. “We

have been entering teams into tournaments with some of the best teams in the state and we are putting up some of our best numbers against really good, strong competition.”
