Angelo Battaglia delivered Elmhurst a slice of life … and pizza Owner of Two Brothers, Angelo’s, Rosalia’s passes away at 89

“Those who touch our lives stay in our hearts forever. I will miss my dear, longtime friend.”

Those are the words of a person who left a comment about Angelo Battaglia at the web site of the Pedersen Ryberg funeral home.

A dear friend indeed… and then there’s the food! Over the years, Angelo Battaglia brought some of the

best food, along with outstanding restaurant service and event catering right here to the Elmhurst community all the way from his homeland of Italy.

Founder and owner of Two Brothers from Italy, Angelo’s Ristorante, and Rosalia’s Deli in Elmhurst, Angelo Battaglia passed away on Nov. 26, 2023, at the age of 89. He was born in Altavilla Milicia, Sicily on March 10, 1934.

Angelo was a child during World War II and would remember the hardships. Growing up, he worked with his father on his family’s land in Sicily. With just a fifth grade education, Angelo was wiser than many and accomplished so much.

At age 26, he married Rosalia, the love of his life, and they celebrated 63 years together this past Nov. 12.

Along with Rosalia and their three children, Angelo immigrated to

Germany and then, on to the United States, where they arrived on May 13, 1972. The Battaglia family started their new life here in Elmhurst.

Times were difficult at first, but Angelo persisted, often holding two or three jobs at a time to take care of his family.

Angelo and his brother rented a small space at 128 W. Park Ave. in downtown Elmhurst and converted it into a small Italian restaurant, where

they began their legacy on April 25, 1976. Angelo had a tenacity to develop his own recipes, most of which have never been changed since.

One year later, Angelo and Rosalia became the sole proprietors of the Two Brothers from Italy restaurant.

With an unwavering and determined work ethic, he eventually opened Angelo’s Ristorante in 1994, followed

Big picture for DuPage tourism grows The DuPage Convention & Visitors Bureau (DCVB) inducted five new members to its Board of Directors as the organization focuses on the opportunities that lie ahead for DuPage County through 2026.

New members include Mark Doles, executive director, DuPage Airport Authority; Adam Henrikson, general manager, Hyatt Lodge Oak Brook Chicago; Matt LaFond, executive director, Cantigny Park; Alicia LaVire, vice president of marketing

and guest services, The Morton Arboretum; and Jonathan Kruger, director of marketing, Science of Spirituality Meditation Center. Each new member will serve a two-year term.

DCVB’s Board of Directors consists of 26 leaders with various backgrounds working in collaboration to ensure growth and sustainability of DuPage’s visitor industry— an important sector of DuPage’s economy.

Silverado falls to the wrecking ball

Well, the crane anyway. A crane made quick work of tearing down the structure that once was Silverado Grill, a local landmark and anchor of the Spring Road Business District. When owners Jack Island and Dave Walradt opened the restaurant, it was the 17th or 18th endeavor to make a go of it at that location, but they all failed. Silverado did it right and stayed successful for the long haul. It was a frequent gathering place for the entire community and was THE place to be for the Elmhurst St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Silverado was a prime spot to watch sports, and most of all, it had the best that money could buy as far as burgers, steaks, fries, armadillo eggs, honey mustard dressing, and much more. Goodbye, old friend.

Quigley donned flippers that were about three feet long, as well as his swim trunks and a snorkel to take a dip in the pool that was available at the ECCI holiday party held at Community Bank of Elmhurst on Thursday, Dec .7. The pool was filled with rubber ducks that were pulled throughout the evening to award donations to local area not-for-profits. Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal trespassing, criminal damage Dec. 4 A complainant at a business in the 900 block of N. York told police that the suspect was sitting in the backseat of a vehicle that does not belong to him. The reporting officer arrived on scene and the suspect was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Medics arrived on scene and the suspect was transported to the Elmhurst Hospital. A trespass notice was issued to the suspect.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance, dispute Dec. 1 Rodolfo Medrano, 44, of Elmhurst, was charged with attempted disorderly conduct in the 100 block of N. Addison at 6:15 p.m. According to police, a complainant reported the suspect damaged and removed several items from his apartment while moving out. Police said the suspect denies damaging or taking anything that wasn’t hers. During the investigation, it was learned that Medrano allegedly filed a false police report.

A victim in the 400 block of W. Alexander told police at 1:07 p.m. that the suspect had struck her and tried to pull out her earrings.

Charges are pending.

Nov. 30 A 41-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 100 block of N. Addison at 10:55 p.m.

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of fleeing and eluding during which the driver of a vehicle fled the scene after being stopped for a traffic stop by police.

According to information provided by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported two incidents of identity theft or fraud.

Obstructing identification Dec. 6 Jonathan D. Vargas-Panchi, 22, of Chicago, was charged with possession of false identification, obstructing identification, driving with no license and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and I-290 at 5:51 a.m.

Possession of cannabis in a vehicle

According to information provided last week by the Elmhurst Police Department, police reported one incident of possession of cannabis by either the driver of a vehicle or a passenger: Yakelyn Mendoza, 21, of Chicago, near Route 83 and North at 1:06 a.m. Dec. 2.

Aaron Redd, 24, of Justice, was charged with aggravated DUI, DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, disobeying a traffic control signal, speeding and no insurance near

Dec. 2 Irma Martinez, 40; Silvia Martinez, 48; and Kevin Mendez-Martinez, 20, all of Bensenville, were charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at 6:46 p.m.

A complainant at a pharmacy in the 100 block of N. Robert Palmer told police three individuals exited the store activating the alarm.

The complainant is unsure what items were taken. An investigation is pending.

A victim in the 400 block of S. Fairview told police that after hosting a party at her residence, she could not find her Apple Airpods.

The reporting officer responded to Lincolnwood to interview the suspects. Charges are pending.

April-June 11 A victim in the 900 block of S. Riverside states an unknown suspect(s) removed several items from her unlocked storage locker sometime between the above dates. An investigation is pending.

Nov. 27-Nov. 28 A victim reported an unknown suspect(s) entered his unsecured vehicle and removed $2 sometime between the above dates.

Burglary charges filed after two attempt to break into business

On Friday, Dec. 8, a release was received from the Elmhurst Police Department issued by Police Chief Michael McLean regarding an incident that resulted in two arrests.

According to the release, on Thursday, Dec. 7 at approximately 1:50 a.m., two men were apprehended after allegedly attempting to force entry to a business on Deevven Q. Steven the 100 block of W. Diversey Ave., then fleeing.

Harris Smith Elmhurst police were dispatched to a burglar alarm call after a security monitoring service reported seeing two men wearing gloves and masks allegedly attempting to break through the building windows and door. Upon arrival, officers observed one suspect allegedly running from the scene. Two officers pursued him on foot and apprehended this first suspect about a block away.

At the same time, the second suspect allegedly fled the business parking lot in a black Nissan sedan with no headlights on and no license plates visible. The Nissan reportedly fled onto York Street and entered eastbound I-290. Officers observed the Nissan exit the expressway toward westbound St. Charles Road.

Two Elmhurst police officers deployed tire deflation devices and disabled the driver-side tires of the Nissan as it drove eastbound on St. Charles Road. The Nissan was pursued by assisting police officers as it drove westbound on I-290 near York Street. As it rolled to a stop, the second burglary suspect reportedly ran from the car. An Illinois state trooper and a Bensenville police officer apprehended the second suspect on the York Street/I-290 ramp. Both suspects were transported to the Elmhurst Police Department to continue the investigation.

Officers and detectives collected evidence from the crime scene and obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s vehicle. Police said the Nissan turned out to be a rental vehicle with the rear license plate removed and the front license plate bent upwards.

In consultation with the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office, the suspects were criminally charged as follows: Steven Smith, 33, of Chicago, was charged with attempted burglary and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

Deevven Q. Harris, 28, also of Chicago, was charged with attempted burglary, aggravated fleeing and eluding, speeding, driving without registration, disobeying traffic control signal, improper lighting, and disobeying stop sign.

Both suspects were transported to the DuPage County Jail to appear in First Appearance Court and were subsequently granted pretrial release.

Members of the public are reminded defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial in a court of law.

Three charged with burglary, retail theft from Oak Brook Ulta store Additional charges for leading police on high-speed chase DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Oak Brook Deputy Chief of Police Reid Foltyniewicz announced last week that Judge Joshua Dieden has granted the state’s motion to deny pre-trial release for a Chicago woman accused of stealing from the Oak Brook Ulta store and leading police on a high-speed chase.

Damonica Stewart, 27, is charged with one count of burglary (Class 2 felony), one count of retail theft (C-3 felony) and two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding (C-4 felony).

Judge Dieden denied the state’s motion to detain pre-trial Stewart’s

co-defendants, Omesha Hawkins, 28, and Onequa Hawkins, 32. Both women, of Chicago, are charged with one count of burglary (C-2 felony) and two counts Damonica of retail theft (one Stewart C-3 felony and one C-4 felony).

It is alleged that on Dec. 4 at approximately 3:15 p.m., the three defendants entered the Oak Brook Ulta store located in the 2100 block

of W. 22nd St. It is alleged that the trio stole multiple items totaling more than $300 and left the store without paying for the merchandise.

It is further alleged Omesha that the women Hawkins then entered a BMW and fled the area.

An Oak Brook police officer responded to the area and located the BMW allegedly turning against a one-way only sign near 22nd Street

and Midwest Road. The officer activated his emergency lights and sirens and initiated pursuit of the defendants’ vehicle, allegedly driven

by Stewart.

Onequa Police said Hawkins Stewart did not pull over and instead accelerated, reaching speeds of approximately 70 mph. and as she fled, Stewart drove erratically down 22nd Street, weaving in and out of

lanes. She drove on the median at one point to pass vehicles at a stop light and drove between vehicles waiting at a stop light. Stewart’s vehicle came to a stop after striking two other vehicles.

All three defendants were taken into custody at this time. Upon searching the BMW, authorities found merchandise stolen from Ulta.

The next court appearance for all three defendants is scheduled Dec. 26 for arraignment in front of Judge Margaret O’Connell. As a condition of their release, the defendants are prohibited from entering any Ulta store.

Man charged with exposing himself to two young girls Safe-T-Act allowed his release following similar incident in October set Park, located in the 400 block of Fairview Avenue in Glen Ellyn, for a call of a man who exposed himself and masturbated in front of two young girls ages nine and 11.

Following an investigation into the matter, it is alleged that the two girls were walking home from school when they heard a male voice and turned around to see a man, later identified as Morgan, standing approximately 10 feet away from them.

It is alleged that Morgan told the girls he had dropped something in the bushes and it was “over there,” which caused the girls to look in another direction. It is further alleged that when one of the girls looked back at Morgan, he was masturbating. It is alleged that the girls looked

away from Morgan and when they looked back to see where he was, he had fled the scene.

On Thursday, Nov. 30, Judge Anthony Coco issued an arrest warrant for Morgan. Morgan was taken into custody without incident from his home later that day.

On Friday, Oct. 6, Morgan was charged with three counts of felony unauthorized video recording following allegations that at a Hinsdale Starbucks he placed his phone underneath a thirteen-year-old girl’s dress and began video recording and that he secretly video recorded a woman who was in a changing room at the Downers Grove Goodwill Store & Donation Center.

It is alleged that Carr forced the women into prostitution every day, threatened their lives as well as the lives of their family members if they did not do as they were told. In addition, Carr would beat at least one of the victims on a daily basis.

“The charges against Mr. Carr are in a word, appalling,” Berlin said.

“The alleged exploitation of these young victims, who were forced into the sex trade and trapped there by the use of deadly threats, should send a chill down the spine of each and every one of us.”

Carr’s next court appearance was scheduled Dec. 11 for status in of Judge Daniel Guerin. If found guilty, Carr faces a sentence of up to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly have announced that Judge George Ford granted the state’s motion to Heggie Carr deny pre-trial release for a Chicago man charged with trafficking young women into prostitution.

Heggie Carr appeared in First Appearance Court and is facing two counts of involuntary servitude (Class X felony) and two counts of trafficking in persons for labor (Class 1 felony).

In late September, the Illinois State Police received information regarding an 18-year-old woman who allegedly is the victim of trafficking

by Carr. Through the course of their investigation into the matter, it is alleged that Carr placed online ads offering encounters with women at, among other locations, the Sonesta Suites ES located in Lombard.

On Nov. 29, undercover officers arranged for services with two women at the Sonesta Suites ES through an online ad posted by Carr. It is alleged that Carr was present at the scheduled time of the appointment and that Carr left the hotel upon the officer’s arrival, at which time he was taken into custody.

Further investigation found that

qualify for pre-trial detention under the state’s Safe-T-Act, Morgan was released from custody.

“The allegations against Mr. Morgan are very disturbing,” Berlin said.

“In DuPage County we will do whatever is necessary to ensure that our

children are able to walk home from school without being subject to the type of behavior alleged in this case.”

Morgan’s next court appearance is scheduled Tuesday, Dec. 19 for arraignment in front of Judge Michael Reidy.

AARP Illinois issues statement about Peoples Gas emergency motion The following statement was issued by AARP Illinois State Director Philippe Largent following the emergency motion filed by Peoples Gas asking the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) to increase part of its Nov.16 rate case ruling: “On behalf of our 1.7 million members and all older adults across the state, AARP Illinois filed a response opposing Peoples Gas’ motion. The ICC’s decision, which will save Peoples Gas customers millions of dollars on their utility bills, is a monumental win for utility customers, including older adults on fixed incomes who were already struggling to keep up with rising utility bills.

“We vehemently oppose Peoples Gas’ attempt to undermine the authority and thorough analysis of the ICC’s decision by trying to add an additional $134 million in spending.

AARP Illinois always supports safe, reliable and affordable energy delivery to customers, and we firmly uphold the ICC’s consideration of these factors in their analysis. The excessive spending proposed, and once again requested, by Peoples Gas is a troubling display of corporate interests taking precedence over the needs and concerns of Chicago residents.

“As a formal intervenor on behalf of Illinois residents 50-plus, AARP Illinois has opposed the rate increases that benefited Peoples Gas’ bottom line on the backs of its customers from the beginning. Slices of life

Being invited For much of my life, I’ve been the inviter. I enjoyed planning and inviting people to those plans.

But in the last few years, I haven’t invited much of anyone anywhere. I didn’t have the heart for it. I lacked momentum and (to be honest) I felt broken so I took on a rather new role.

I found myself waiting to be invited.

Not at first. At first, I didn’t want to be invited anywhere. I couldn’t plan or commit from today to tomorrow. I couldn’t plant or commit from 5-6 p.m. It felt too big.

Too overwhelming. Because it was, at the time.

But in the last few months, that’s changed. My attitude has changed and I’ve been going places - quite literally.

Lunch and shopping with a new acquaintance. A Friday night out.

An exercise class with friends. A Chinese restaurant on a holiday weekend.

Yep. I’m going places.

And it may not seem like much, but to me it is everything, or at the very least it is something.

Something significant.

In all this getting out, I realized I rather like it, and I give thanks for all my new friends who have opened this window for me.

In a sense, you’ve brought me back to life and it’s pretty awesome.

In that, I realize it feels good to be invited. It’s nice.

But I’m afraid I’ve emanated the “don’t talk to me” vibe for more than a little while. Too long, but that is what grief will do to you.

I’m sure there are people who might have invited me … then, thought twice about it. Because maybe they assumed I wasn’t ready.

Or, maybe my grief was so palpable it made others uncomfortable.

Who wants to go out to dinner with someone who cries before the main course is served?

It wasn’t that bad (always) but I did go through a very tough, a very dark period and I realize I wouldn’t have wanted to be around me either—at least not for long stretches. Thing is, I didn’t have much of a choice. I was my dinner date seven out of seven, whether I liked it or not.

But time can be our enemy and our friend—sometimes both at once. Often both at once. Time has provided a gap between now and my loss and that gap has given me space to breath, to reflect and perhaps, even, to live.

To accept invitations. To look forward to them. To participate with joy and happy anticipation.

Thank you, to all you you, who have invited me to participate in life again. It is more, so much more, than appreciated.

Now I want to take it a step further.

I don’t want to, need to, wait for an invitation (although it will always be nice).

I want to invite. I want to plan. I want to be the person who includes others.

To have fun. To plan the fun. To be the origin of the fun.

So look out, all of you who have looked out for me! I’m on the invitation warpath. I am to repay your kindness with walks, dinner out, plans for next weekend and maybe even a home cooked meal.

I can’t wait to be on the other end of the invitation. On the other end of giving. It still feels a little scary, but it also feels good. To move forward.

To plan. To invite.

Who knew such a little realization could feel so big?

Robert James Grob, 71 Robert “Bob” James Grob, 71 years old, passed away December 8, 2023, surrounded by his family.

He was born February 29, 1952 in Oak Park, to the late Robert and Marion Grob. He was proud of the distinction of being a leap year baby. Bob graduated in 1970 from York High School in Elmhurst. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1974 from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree in taxation from DePaul University.

Bob had a successful 44 year career in the accounting and taxation fields. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. He enjoyed being a soccer coach for his daughter, fishing with his wife, and cheering on his favorite sports teams. He especially enjoyed driving, including long road trips to visit his children and grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 49 years, Marjorie; loving daughters, Jill (Andrew) Remming, Liz (Sean) Davidson and Courtney (John) Lazarz; cherished granddaughters, Lauren and Morgan Remming, and Hazel and Quinn Davidson; cherished grandson, Thomas Robert Lazarz; and dear nephews, Eric and Alex Schmitz. He is preceded in death by his loving sister, Pamela (A.J.) Schmitz.

A memorial visitation will be held from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. noon on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Elmhurst Community Funeral Home – THE AHLGRIM CHAPEL, 567 South Spring Road, Elmhurst, with a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 11:30 a.m. Donations to the Amyloidosis Support Groups are appreciated.

at several racquetball clubs, a Currency Exchange, a Christian Church, a flight attendant with a private charter airline and an office manager for an audiologist. Crystal was tirelessly and continuously employed during her adult years to remain in her home throughout retirement, a goal which she achieved.

Crystal was an avid member of the American Airlines Kiwi Club and she had several other interests throughout her lifetime. She spent many years playing racquetball, softball and was particularly passionate about bowling, participating in many leagues with family and friends. She introduced the love of this sport to all of her grandchildren and some of them continue to bowl competitively to this day. She loved tending to her flowers, both inside and outside, and often Crystal could be found relaxing on the backyard deck while eagerly anticipating visits by her family and friends. During baseball season, she faithfully watched the Cubs, and was much more than a fair-weather fan.

Crystal made a difference by generously donating her body to the Science Care program which supports medical advancements that improve the lives of future generations.

Crystal M. Durdil (Cousineau), 82 Crystal Marie Durdil (nee Cousineau), 82, passed away on September 16, 2023. She was a long-time Elmhurst resident of 57 years living in the same home. Crystal was a loving mother to Roger (Liza) Durdil of Elmhurst, Jennifer (Nate) Klinger of Elmhurst, and Amy (John) Anderson of Lombard.

Mor-Mor, as she was affectionately known to her grandchildren, is also survived by Michael and Matthew Durdil; Rose, Wade, and Sarah Klinger; and Henry and Sage Anderson. Crystal had the joy of a blended family with additional grandchildren, Nathan (Becca) and Adam (Michelle) Klinger, and great-grandchildren Rhealynn and Trace Klinger. Crystal was also the dear sister of Carol (Cousineau) Conville, whom she had lived with for the last 30 years, and a fond aunt to Karin Conville, Kristin Dean, and Kirk Conville. Crystal is further survived by her former husband, Michael (Julaine) Durdil, and she leaves behind many close friends, especially Mary Ann Nawara. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Rose Cousineau, as well as her aunt and uncle, Roy and Annette Nordstrom, formerly of Elmhurst.

Crystal grew up in Cicero, Illinois where she attended Burnham grade school, Morton East High School (class of 1959), and subsequently attended Lincoln College. Before dedicating her adult years to raising her children, she was a flight attendant with American Airlines and worked for Chicago-based ophthalmologist, Theodore Zekman.

Victory Auto Wreckers closes its doors

Everyone knows that classic commercial… a young man opens his car door, only to see the door break off its hinges and fall at his feet, as he looks hopelessly toward the heavens. The answer was taking the car to Victory Auto Wreckers. In another iconic commercial, the longtime auto salvage yard insisted “that old car is worth money,” showing someone handing over the title to their car in exchange for a handful of cash.

Located in the industrial area on Green Street in Bensenville, Victory Auto Wreckers has been in business since 1945 but has been owned by Kyle Weisner and his family since 1967. Weisner recently sat down with Dean Richards of WGN-9 News to formally announce that the business would close forever on Thursday, Nov. 30. The only explanation he offered Richards was that it was “time to shut down and take it a little easier.”

In an achievement that places it among the top 2% of organizations accredited by The Council of Quality and Leadership (CQL), the Ray Graham Association (RGA) has been awarded the esteemed “Person-Centered Excellence Accreditation, with Distinction.”

This designation places RGA among an elite group of organizations in the disability services sector.

“This accreditation is not just a feather in our cap; it’s a testament to our culture of positivity and the relentless pursuit of excellence in supporting those we serve,” said RGA president and CEO Kim Zoeller.

CQL’s accrediting body was especially impressed by RGA’s “innovative approaches and robust communication strategies during the rigorous accreditation process. The transition from a Specialized Living Center fa-

cility to neighborhood living underlines the adaptability and resilience of people with disabilities and their support staff.”

“Ray Graham Association is delivering the highest level of quality in their services and they’re having an extraordinary impact on people’s lives,” said Mary Kay Rizzolo, president and CEO of CQL. “It’s not easy to attain this type of accreditation, so we want to congratulate them on this impressive achievement.”

Garden Club decorates Elmhurst Public Library Club began annual tradition in the 1940s

On a recent morning, more than a dozen members of the Elmhurst Garden Club met at the Elmhurst Public Library for their annual EPL holiday decorating activity that first

took place in the 1940s at the former library (now the Wilder Mansion).

Over the years the activity has expanded from a few holiday arrangements to the current decorating that includes five decorated trees, and shelf displays. Library staff members were also given decorations for their

staff meeting room. The EGC is open to anyone interested in gardening, ecology, floral design and camaraderie. Meetings are held in the Wilder Mansion on the first Monday of the month.

York boys basketball team wins a pair of games Molis leads Dukes in win at Lockport

The York boys basketball team racked up two more recent wins, including one in conference play. The Dukes were 59-36 non-conference winners at Lockport Township. Brendan Molis led York with 15 points, while Braden Richardson had 10 points. Max Burnison added nine points. “Defensively, we were very active,” York coach Mike Dunn said.

“We had 141 defensive hustle plays.

We rebounded the ball pretty decently and took care of the ball. We played well on the road.”

That led into York scoring a 6640 West Suburban Conference Silver

Division win over Proviso West to move to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in WSC Silver play. AJ Levine led York with 16 points. Kyle Waltz added 14 points and Richardson chipped in 13 points.

“I thought we played well defensively,” Dunn said. “We rebounded pretty well in the second half. We built up the lead and in the fourth quarter we were able to substitute.

We are getting better every game and every chance we get to play. We had the two tough losses at Thanksgiving and since then we have grown. We’ve played pretty good basketball, but I don’t think we have played to our highest potential of basketball yet.

We’re working every day to do that.”

Dunn likes the depth he’s seen on his team. “We are playing nine to 10 kids every game,” he said. “We are also playing seven seniors who now have a lot of experience and have been seasoned well. Different guys are contributing. AJ Levine has been very good and has done a really nice job distributing the basketball and taking care of it. His assists are up.

He’s averaging four more assists than he did last year, so more guys are getting involved. Braden Richardson and Brendan Molis and Ryan Waltz all have been good. We have those seven seniors playing and they are making big impacts.”

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team off to 7-2 start

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team continued its hot start to the season, sitting at 7-2 heading into this week. The Knights closed out last week with a 36-26 win over town neighbor Timothy Christian.

“It was a very low-scoring game,” IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell said. “It was a tight game with good defense from both sides. They ran a 1-3-1 and they have a lot of length.

I was very proud of our defensive effort in containing their top guys and limiting them to 26 points. It’s always a fun and competitive game against them.”

Jake Gallagher led the Knights with 16 points. Andrew Hill added 10 rebounds. Matt Sloan came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points. “Matt Sloan gave us a big spark off the bench,” Tyrrell said.

The Knights also dropped a game to fellow Chicago Catholic League team Brother Rice, a top-15-ranked squad. “They are one of the top teams in the Chicago Catholic League,” Tyrrell said. “It was a three-possession game most of the game and then they opened it up late. I was very proud of how we competed against Brother Rice. We were one 3-pointer away from making them feel uncomfortable.” Hill had 16 points in the

Brother Rice game.

The Trojans also downed Walther Christian 62-52 in non-conference action. Hill had 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Gallagher had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Danny Fromelt had a career-high 17 points.

Aidan Johnson had 11 assists. “Aidan has been a good facilitator for us,” Tyrrell said.

The Walther win gave Tyrrell 200 career wins as ICCP’s head coach.

He’s the first boys basketball coach in program history to record 200 wins. “The assistant coaches and kids surprised me with a little water-bottle dousing celebration,” Tyrrell said.

“It was pretty cool to celebrate the

moment with them. I’ve had a lot of support here over the years. It’s great to be part of a special team and program.”

In earlier action, the Knights defeated Marmion Academy in CCL White Division. Gallagher had 19 points, while Hill had 17 points.

Johnny Orvino had six points. “Johnny had six points in his first career start and knocked down our first 3-pointer for us, which set us at ease,” Tyrrell said. “It was good to get a win at Marmion and start off conference play like that. It was very encouraging. The story of this year so far has been different guys contributing off the bench each game.

It’s been very positive.”

The Knights also downed Johnsburg in a non-conference game. Hill had a career-high 26 points, while Hill had eight rebounds and Gallagher had 16 points. Fromelt had nine points and 10 rebounds. “Jake and Andrew have led the way scoring-wise, but a guy like Danny Fromelt brings a lot of intangibles to the team,” Tyrrell said.

The Knights play top-five-ranked Mt. Carmel, Providence Catholic and York — all on the road this week. ICCP squares off against York on Saturday. “That’s a tough week,” Tyrrell said. “Those will be some big tests for the guys.”

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team engineered an impressive recent comeback. The Trojans trailed Parkview Christian out of Orland Park by 15 points and halftime and roared all the way back to record a 54-50 non-conference win in overtime. Sami Drye led the Trojans with 18 points. Elisabeth Van Den Berg added 14 points.

“Defensively, the girls really stepped up,” Timothy Christian coach Jill Groenewold said. “They did a great job double-teaming their best player and made her give up the ball. I was also impressed that the girls realized they can’t defer to someone else and had to take shots

themselves when left open. It was a very exciting game.”

Earlier, the Trojans lost to Bishop McNamara 60-37 in Chicagoland Christian Conference action. “Bishop Mac is very good,” Groenewold said. “We got whomped on. It was a long ride to get whomped on.”

The Trojans also lost 48-26 to Wheaton Academy in CCC action.

“Again, we played another very sold team that is very experienced,” Groenewold said. “We are not ready to play at that level consistently.”

In the Wheaton Academy game, Drye and point guard Maria PozdolNiego each had 10 points. Drye had 12 points and Van Den Berg, a freshman, had 10 points. Groenewold noted Van Den Berg had two dou-

ble-doubles during the three-game span.

Groenewold also was impressed with the play of freshman Mia Schilf. “She has been very consistent on the defensive end,” she said. “Mia is instant energy when we put her in the game. That’s a nice thing to have coming off the bench.”

Timothy was 6-6 overall and 0-2 in CCC play to start this week. “We are slowly developing and that’s nice to see,” Groenewold said. “We will learn a lot each game and take that and move forward and not repeat previous mistakes. We were down 15 points to Parkview Christian and the girls never gave up. We were double teaming and trapping and running down the court and seeing if we

could score quickly. It was tremendous to see that. They never give up on themselves.”

The Trojans have games this week against Chicago Hope Academy (a CCC game), Walther Christian (Friday) and Southland Prep out of Richton Park (Saturday).

IC Catholic Prep boys bowling The IC Catholic Prep boys bowling team recently competed against Chicago De La Salle High School and dropped a 1,563-1,060 decision in a match where the Knights had only three bowlers competing.

Top returning bowlers for coach Jeff Fredrickson’s squad include juniors Luke Beckham and P.J. Dolan, while key newcomers include junior

Ben Erickson and freshman Daniel Alba.

Beckham leads ICCP with a 147.5 average and he’s recorded the team’s high game at 177 and high series at 461. “Luke has stepped into the team leader role with his positive attitude and how he helps the other bowlers,” Fredrickson noted. “P.J. is also very positive and helpful by helping Eric and Daniel.”

Overall, Fredrickson has seen a team-first attitude in the early going.

“A strength for us is being able to pick up the bowler if they have an open frame,” he explained. “They help each other out.”

The Knights bowled earlier this week against DePaul College Prep at Habetler Bowl in Chicago.

Metcalf likes how York’s starting lineup has evolved. “Our lineup has finally fallen into place after three years of hard work and determining weight classes,” he said.

Coachability also has been a key, Metcalf added. “Each day every Duke wrestler looks, listens and learns,” he said. Leadership, Metcalf explained, has come in abundance thanks to the likes of Parisi and Bagdasarian. “Zach and Austin are senior leaders,” he said. “They make important decisions for our team.

State health plan declares racism a public health crisis Advocacy groups say ‘Healthy Illinois 2028’ is missing key areas of focus

A new state health report pinpoints racism as a public health crisis while also noting Illinois needs to improve in the areas of maternal and infant health, mental health and substance use disorders.

The broad goals are laid out in a draft of the State Health Improvement Plan, which will be finalized and presented to the Illinois General Assembly next year. The SHIP is part of Healthy Illinois 2028, a five-year plan outlining the major public health crises the state hopes to address.

After two years of assessment and planning, Healthy Illinois 2028 prioritized five major public health issues: • Racism as a public health crisis.

• Maternal and infant health.

• Mental health and substance use disorders.

• Chronic disease.

• COVID-19 and emerging diseases.

The report found these issues consistently overlap and are all exacerbated by a lack of access to health care and wraparound services, the infrastructure of public health systems and racial inequities.

“It is essential to emphasize that disparities in health outcomes according to race/ethnicity have nothing to do with biology and everything to do with inequitable distributions of money, power and resources,” the report stated.

Several members of the public registered concern at virtual hearings last week about what was missing from the draft plan – including care plans for migrants and concrete actions to slow a rising number of overdose deaths in Illinois.

Public health advocates asked for the inclusion of data-driven responses. Previous SHIPs have included measurable goals including reducing rates of suicide and opioid overdose deaths, both of which have increased over the last decade, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Health Statistics.

But Jennifer Epstein, deputy di-

rector of the Illinois Department of Public Health Office of Policy, Planning and Statistics emphasized to Capitol News Illinois that the report is still in draft form, and that specific metrics will be added to the plan during 2024.

Racism’s effect on health care The draft improvement plan for the first time makes a point of listing racism as an overarching public health crisis in Illinois.

“Racism is both a cross-cutting issue and a standalone priority because it is at the root of many, if not all health issues,” Illinois Public Health Institute senior program manager Janece Gough said at the hearings.

IPHI was one of the entities that contributed to the draft under the guidance of the Illinois Department of Public Health and the State Board of Health. The report was also co-authored by staff from the University of Illinois Chicago’s Policy, Practice and Prevention Research Center.

Gough said continued stigma and discrimination from health care providers are among the barriers to equitable health care.

The plan aims to address inequities by forming an appointed advisory committee on racism in health care and building a more diverse health care workforce. This type of racism happens when health care workers hold racial biases against patients, whether intentional or not.

IPHI director Laurie Call said public health infrastructure needs serious strengthening to be ready for emerging threats, as evidenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Climate change—and its health effects caused by air, water and land pollution—are included in those emerging threats, she said.

“We know that as climate change is expected to worsen, this will have many health consequences,” she said.

Call said eight local entities in Illinois—such as the Chicago Department of Public Health, the Peoria City/County Health Department and a Champaign school board—have

already issued a formal declaration of racism as a public health crisis.

According to the American Public Health Association, 19 other states have declared racism a public health crisis, including Michigan and Wisconsin.

During a recent hearing, Angela McLemore, who worked for years in hospital administration and now serves as executive assistant to state Sen. Mattie Hunter, D-Chicago, said she was supportive of the plan’s goals, but she emphasized the state will need to dedicate resources to make them a reality.

“I like what I have seen,” McLemore said. “In order to make the goals and objectives happen, you have to spend a lot more time on implementation, planning and we need to attach the money, manpower and materials necessary for each plan.”

Funding was a key concern for multiple other public commenters, including Creola Hampton, president of Black Leadership Advocacy Coalition for Healthcare Equity, or BLACHE, pronounced “black.”

BLACHE currently has 19 organizations in its network from the west side of Chicago down to East St. Louis.

“The unfortunate dilemma is the Illinois Department of Public Health funding is so highly racially inequitable that it perpetuates racism being a public health issue,” Hampton said.

Hampton argued that when it comes to combatting HIV and AIDS, by which Black communities have been hit the hardest, there has been little funding sent to “African American-led organizations that have the enhanced cultural competency” and “the maximum degree of effectiveness.”

“The state is going to be leading saying that racism is a public health issue,” she said. “Then the state has to be actively involved and making sure that there is equitable funding going to African American-led organizations to do the work that needs to be done to negate the inequity of health.”

In response to media questions, IDPH spokesperson Jim Leach said

the agency aims to partner with Black-led organizations around the state to reduce the “historic and present-day disparities” found with HIV. “More than half of the HIV testing and risk reduction services delivered with IDPH grant funds were provided to clients who identified as Black/ African American,” Leach told Capitol News Illinois in an email.

Healthy Illinois 2028 lists an infrastructure recommendation to “de-silo funding and eliminate inequitable funding.”

Requested additions Though reducing overdose mortality was outlined as a priority goal in the previous SHIP, overdose deaths have continued to climb in Illinois.

The IDPH Opioid Data Dashboard recorded 3,261 opioid-involved overdose deaths in 2022—a new record for the state.

The SHIP draft lists broad objectives including reducing the number of emergency department visits and increasing access to health care and wraparound services. It also sets a goal to “Increase funding to support the infrastructure development of the mental health and substance use disorder system.”

Absent from the report is any mention of licensed overdose prevention sites, something many addiction researchers and advocates for those with substance use disorders support.

“We really don’t have time to lose,” Chelsea Laliberte Barnes, co-founder of the Illinois Harm Reduction and Recovery Coalition, told the panel last week.

Overdose prevention sites, which are places where people who use drugs can get clean equipment and drug samples tested, present one major evidence-based strategy to reduce overdose deaths. Illinois has none but the issue was brought forward each of the past two legislative sessions by Rep. La Shawn Ford, D-Chicago. New York is the only state with licensed overdose prevention centers, both of which are in New York City.

In countries with overdose prevention sites, like Canada, Australia and several European countries, no deaths have been reported at any of these centers.

“We’ve seen how much these types of interventions save money, they reduce costs from emergency services. They provide a direct link for people to access health care services, job training, food,” Laliberte Barnes said. “I would just like to really advocate for the addition of overdose prevention sites as a strategy for the plan over the next five years.”

She said overdoses are still rising “statewide—rural, urban, suburban, you name it.”

The draft report also doesn’t contain a plan of care for recent migrant populations that have arrived in Illinois in the last 15 months largely from the southern U.S. border.

As of Dec. 6, more than 27,000 asylum seekers have arrived in Chicago, with a majority arriving via buses from Texas at the direction of Gov. Greg Abbott, according to the city’s new arrivals dashboard.

Without proper medical attention and paperwork, the number of asylum seekers places a particular strain on public schools that need to address their physical and mental health needs.

Betzua Rubio, a nurse at Eli Whitney Elementary in Chicago’s Little Village, told the panel she was concerned for migrant children who are without paperwork such as immunization records.

“We are seeing the lack of implementation for medical providers to adequately provide medical orders,” including “asthma action plans, allergy action plans,” Rubio said at the hearings.

Rubio estimated that more than 100 migrant students have been enrolled at Eli Whitney and described her work as a bilingual school nurse as “nonstop.”

“We have been bringing administration vans for those children, but this is all work that we’re doing individually,” Rubio told Capitol News Illinois. “We’re not getting any help.”

Illinois families with infants and toddlers now have access to free children’s books that can be sent directly to their home, regardless of their income.

Gov. JB Pritzker last week announced the official launch of the state’s partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program founded by the country music legend in 1995 in her home county in east Tennessee. It now sends free books every month to nearly 3 million children in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland.

“Today, I couldn’t be prouder

to announce that the Imagination Library is working with the state of Illinois to begin our journey to provide every child under the age of five an opportunity to receive a free book delivered to them every single month,” Pritzker said at an event at the Bloomington Public Library.

Pritzker first announced in June that the state had formed a partnership with the Dollywood Foundation, Parton’s philanthropic organization, after Illinois lawmakers included $1.6 million in this year’s budget to fund the state’s share of the program. Other funding comes from the Dollywood Foundation and local, county-based organizations.

Since then, about 44 local programs have been operating in the state, serving roughly 4 percent of eligible children. But Dollywood Foundation executive director Nora Briggs said the goal is to reach all of the estimated 755,000 children under age 5 in Illinois.

“We know that nothing is more basic, more essential, more foundational to a child’s success in life than the ability to read,” Briggs said. “The research is clear. We cannot wait until kindergarten for children to have access or exposure to books. It must happen early. It must start in the home environment. And reading at home requires books.”

People who are interested in en-

rolling their child in the program can find their local provider on the “check availability” tab located at imaginationlibrary.com. From there, applicants submit basic information including their address, their child’s name and date of birth, and the parents’ information.

Once a child’s eligibility is approved, they will start receiving one book each month, addressed to them.

Each child within an age group receives the same monthly book.

Books on the distribution list are chosen by a panel of early childhood literacy experts who review potential titles for inclusion in the distribution list.

In addition to funding the Imagination Library program this year, lawmakers also approved Pritzker’s “Smart Start Illinois” initiative that will provide $250 million this year for early childhood programs, including expanded access to preschool, wage support for child care workers, early intervention programs, and home visiting programs.

“We’re making our mark on every aspect of early childhood, and working with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library literacy efforts will begin now at the earliest ages,” Pritzker said. “Illinois is well on its way to solidifying our status as the number one state in the nation to raise young children.”
