York legend Joe Newton dies at 88

Internationally known cross-country and track-and-field coach touched thousands of lives

Retired York High School coaching legend Joe Newton died early Saturday, Dec. 9 at his home in Goodyear, Ariz. Newton was 88 years old.

Newton’s son, Thomas, posted the following message on Facebook regarding his father’s death.

“Good Afternoon all, “I just wanted to take a moment to let you all know that today is a sad day for not only myself and the Newton family but also the Elmhurst running community with the past and present men of the York cross-country program. This morning at 4 a.m., Arizona time, my father, Joseph R. Newton III, passed away.

“Additionally, I would ask the community and runners of the York cross-country program as well as friends to please respect the wishes of our family. My father was very much a family man first. The family wishes are to keep the funeral private and for the family. However, we will be having a memorial at a later time in early to mid-January.

“My hope is to have the memorial at York and I am working with the district now to that end. When I get details, I will forward them to this

Redeemer Lutheran drops a shocker at P&Z Committee meeting

In last week’s edition, the Elmhurst Independent ran a story about the Nov. 29th meeting of the neighbors who live around Redeemer Lutheran and their concerns about the church’s upcoming plans to reconstruct and reconfigure the area on St. Charles Road, just east of York St. Later, the Independent spoke with Council President David Hanni of Redeemer Lutheran Church, who responded to the comments from the group.

While the neighbors say the project requires seven variances, the church insists it is only asking for three: 1) to allow parking spaces within the front yard from 50 feet to 8.3 feet (Kenilworth) and corner side yard from 30 feet to 9.4 feet (St. Charles); 2) a variation from the collective parking provision from 82 to 53 spaces; and,

3) a variation for the rear building setback requirement from 50 feet to 27 feet.

Hanni flat out refused to discuss any of the neighbors’ concerns about costs of the project, pointing out that it was, quite frankly, nobody’s business.

At the top of a meeting of the Planning & Zoning Committee on Monday, Dec. 11, Assistant City Manager Mike Kopp announced that the church had decided to withdraw the proposal and start the process over.

They plan to make some modifications and then go back before the Zoning and Planning Commission for a second time. The last time the project came before the ZPC, it was turned down by a vote of 5-2, with two commissioners absent.

The proposed modifications include 1) reducing the depth of the three property lots from 165 feet to 155 feet; 2) provide landscaping around the new lot to make it more appealing to the neighbors; and 3) address whether or not the Redeemer parking lot is adequate. They are considering what are called “land banks,” reserving 16 parking spaces,

Elmhurst Community Choir and Orchestra will present its third annual “Christmas in Elmhurst” concert on two evenings, Saturday, Dec. 16 and Sunday, Dec. 17, beginning at 7 p.m. in York High School’s auditorium. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the concerts. Admission is free.

“There will even be an opportunity for the audience to sing a medley of carols together,” said event organizer and choral director Dennis Criser.

The choir is comprised of more than 50 singers from 12 churches -- eight Elmhurst churches and four churches from surrounding suburbs. There are 35 orchestra members from area churches as well as Wheaton College. The evening will include special-effect lighting and sound provided by Brian Semrau.

Some of the neighbors who had attended the meeting on Nov. 29 appeared at the P&Z Committee meeting. Neighbor Doug Manning who lives on Kenilworth said he appreciates the church’s offer to compromise, but says he had never been contacted about the plans in the first place. William Clay, another Kenilworth resident, said he was taken aback by the lack of process on the church’s first go-around with the ZPC. “Now, at the 11th hour, they come up with these changes,” Clay said. “It should have been properly presented to the Zoning & Planning Commission in the first place. They should proceed with caution and remain conscientious of due process.”

Local realtor and Kenilworth resident Mickey Muisenga seemed to like the fact that the proposal would be brought back to the Commission, and reminded church officials that one option is to ‘do nothing.’

“If they sell the three lots, they could raise about $1.8 million and they’ve already raised $600,000, so that should give the church enough to

put in their elevator, the handicapped bathrooms, and the neighbors get status quo,” he said. “That could be a win-win for everyone.”

A brief discussion ensued about the frequency of re-submitting a proposal to the ZPC. It has happened before, but reversing a decision is very rare.

P&Z Committee Chair Alderman Michael Honquest (6th Ward) said that since 2004, there had been 322 decisions made by the Commission.

Of those, 12 had been overturned and only four of those were in residential districts.

Committee member Noel Talluto (4th Ward) noted that there are no transcripts of Zoning Commission meetings.

“If they say ‘safety,’ we don’t always know in what context it was used,” she said. “The Commission is meant to determine law as it stands.

They are not elected as we are, they don’t interpret law.

“If the lot sizes are changing and there are talks about land banking, then those things could change what the Commission thinks [about the project] and how it votes next time around.”

Nov. 30 Nicholas B. Harris Jr., 19, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis and no valid driver’s license subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Columbia at around 6:04 a.m.

Criminal damage to property, criminal trespass to property

Dec. 4 Jose Esparza, 30, of Bensenville, was issued a citation for causing injury to city property in the 400 block of Walnut at around 7:42 a.m. Officers responded for a report of a construction accident. Police said that upon arrival, officers found a construction conveyor lying on its side blocking the roadway, leaking fuel, and causing damage to the pavement.

According to police, Esparza advised officers he was operating the conveyor when the outrigger malfunctioned, causing the machine to overturn.

Dec. 2 A victim in the 300 block of Addison Avenue told police at around 9:20 a.m. that an unknown suspect shot a B.B. gun at his front screened porch. The B.B. projectile went through the screened porch and struck a window, causing damage to the window pane.

Nov. 30-Dec. 1 A victim in the 200 block of W. First told police at around 12:43 a.m. that her ex-husband entered the attached garage of her residence without her permission and took a 2014 Audi. The victim stated she just wanted the car back and a trespass notice served. A reporting officer was able to make contact with the suspect who was served with the trespass notice.

The vehicle was not returned as this is a civil matter.

Nov. 30 Brian T. Beahan, 36, of Elmhurst, was charged with criminal damage to property in the 200 block of Adelia Street at around 8:01 a.m. Police said Beahan became upset and threw a small end table through a window.

Nov. 16-Dec. 5 A victim in the 400 block of S. Argyle Ave. told police that she is being harassed and possibly stalked by the suspect, who is her ex-boyfriend. The victim has seen the suspect on several occasions while driving and feels he is following her. An investigation is pending.

Dec. 6 Derek Keller, 18, of Darien, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a call for a reckless drive in a school parking lot in the 300 block of E. St. Charles at around 8:02 p.m.

Dec. 5 Antonio McBean, 22, of Palatine, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding near Route 83 and North at around 8:37 p.m.

Dec. 2 Rommel Bautista, 18, of Bensenville; Theodore Grant, 19, of Algonquin; and Dylan Sircher, 19, of Villa Park, were issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and York at around 1:57 a.m.

Dec. 6 Attempted burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 500 block of Fairview at around 8:40 p.m. A victim told police that while sleeping, she heard her car alarm go off on her Ford Explorer which was parked in the driveway. She took her keys and turned off the alarm. The victim’s daughter told her this morning she saw a person running down the driveway as she looked out the window when she heard the alarm. No entry was made into the vehicle.

Dec. 2-Dec. 4 A complainant at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand told police that an unknown suspect removed two tires and wheels from a new truck on the dealer lot sometime between the above dates. The vehicle was found propped up on bricks and lug nuts were found lying on the ground beside it.

Nov. 9-Dec. 4 The owner of a business in the 500 block of Spring told police that they received a check for payment on an Apple Mac Book computer which he sold to a suspect. Between the above dates, the check was deposited and subsequently returned unpaid because it was written on an account that was closed. The case is pending investigation.

Theft was reported in the 300 block of S. Spring at around 8:33 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed his black duffel bag from his bicycle that was locked up outside of a church.

Dec. 1 Attempted retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 11 a.m. A complainant told police that a suspect describe as a white male, approximately 35 to 40 years of age with brown hair, glasses, goatee, 5’9”, 200 pounds wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and tan boots was seen exiting the store, pushing a shopping cart full of merchandise which had not been paid for.

The suspect then ran towards a white 4 door Jeep with unknown plates, leaving the cart and merchandise behind. The merchandise was returned to the store.

Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of Geneva at around 3:50 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) attempted to apply for and receive a loan through Lending Club using his information. Lending Club was able to stop the application before any dollar loss occurred.

Nov. 23-Dec. 1 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 800 block of N. York. A victim told police that his vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, had its catalytic converter cut off at some point during the above time frame.

Dec. 3 Police said that while a reporting officer was on patrol in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 2:15 p.m., they observed an occupied suspicious vehicle parked along the south side of a store building with Lisa J. Karson, 33, and William J. Karson, 28, both of Melrose Park, exiting the store carrying shopping baskets containing merchandise. Both suspects admitted to stealing, according to police. William Karson was charged with felony retail theft, while Lisa Karson was charged with retail theft.

Nov. 30 Theft was reported in the 100 block of W. Van Buren at around 4:44 p.m. A complainant told police she was storing some of her property at the suspect’s residence. During that time, the suspect pawned her Sony PlayStation 4, according to police. The suspect related he did pawn the item; however, the complainant was with him at that time. An investigation is pending.

A victim in the 1000 block of S. Mitchell told police at around 3:42 p.m. that she received a call from a woman claiming to be from the Social Security Department. The woman stated that the victim was eligible to have more money per month added to her Social Security benefits. The victim provided all her personal information to the woman. The victim has since cancelled all her credit cards and changed her bank account. No dollar loss was reported at this time.

Dec. 2 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 11:02 a.m. Police said a store employee reported that Suspect #1 entered the store and removed alcohol and then left the store without paying. The sus-

Firefighters respond to a house fire on Scott Street

The Elmhurst fire department was dispatched to Scott Street at 10:13 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 8 for the report of smoke in the kitchen of a single-family residence.

Upon arrival, Elmhurst companies along with mutual aid from Villa Park, Oak Brook and York Center found smoke coming from the roof. The fire was contained to the attic space. Fire was extinguished within 20 minutes. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.

The residence has been deemed uninhabitable. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No damage estimates are yet available.

Program delivers support to sexual assault victims

Volunteers serve as mentors, advocates, helpers

It’s one of those places you wish would go out business but sadly never does.

Sexual Assault Advocates (SAA) is a part of the YWCA, which is the Rape Crisis Center for DuPage.

“Above all else, we are advocates to the victims of sexual assault,” said Cortney Klein, JD, Sexual Assault Advocate with SAA. There are three branches of the work they do: prevention; counseling on-site; and advocacy, said Klein, who is an Elmhurst resident.

To assist in the prevention of sexual assault, SSA visits as many as 65 schools throughout DuPage County.

They provide information and materials that bring awareness and help young people make good decisions in their future. In addition, there are confidential advisors available at College of DuPage, Elmhurst College, DeVry, Chamberlain and other educational institutions.

The City’s Finance Committee Chair Alderman Kevin York (4th Ward) broke the news at the City Council meeting on Monday, Dec. 4, that the 2017 tax levy recommendation for the 2017 would be increasing.

“The 2017 tax levy recommendation before us tonight, a tax increase of $303,394, represents a little over a 3% increase in the City portion of the levy and 2.61% when factoring in the Library levy,” York explained.

“As a reminder, there are three line items, out of twenty line items, on each taxpayer’s property tax bill that relate to the City. They are, 1) City of Elmhurst, 2) Pension Fund and 3) City Elmhurst “LIBR”. The City line item will increase $16.77 for the average home, and the Library line item will increase $8.26 for the aver-

age home. Thus, the cumulative tax increase will be $25.03 for the average home.”

He said the good news was, the average home in Elmhurst has increased in value by about 6.8% for 2017. It was more good news that the Finance Committee recommended continued abatement of the debt service for General Obligation bonds, totaling about $7.64 million for the 2017 levy.

Then Ald. York explained issues that led to the tax levy increase.

“I’d like to clear the air on what was cited as the primary driver of the recommendation of the tax levy increase,” he said. “The required pension contributions that the City makes to the pension funds for the police and fire are a result of statutory liabilities created over the years by the State of Illinois Legislature.

He coached more than 300 all-state athletes and directed 20 of his teams to national cross-country titles.

Newton coached the York boys team full-time through the 2015 season.

He was co-head coach with current York coach Charlie Kern Sr. in 2016 before retiring. A celebration of Newton’s career at York was held last fall at the school.

The vote to accept the tax levy passed unanimously.

Holiday cheer: Call me the Grinch

There is too much guilt in the world. Still, I have a propensity to make myself more of it. Lately I’ve been feeling guilty about holidays.

Days that are supposed to be celebrations filled with joy and fun fill me with dread and anxiety. I bet I’m not alone.

Holidays often catch me off guard.

I’m busy living my simple and ho-ho hum life when – bang! It’s a national holiday, the kids are off school and I was supposed to bake a cake.

At this time of year my angst is exponentiated, or at the very least multiplied. I can’t bring myself to get hyped for the holidays. My family has gone so far as to declare me a Grinch, which makes me feel so much better about the situation.

I begrudgingly accept the title because I truly am lacking in the department of holiday spirit.

I don’t have time to bake cookies, let alone decorate them with multiple colors of homemade frosting and candy sugar sprinkles. I’m no good

I prefer talk radio over holly-jolly Christmas carols. Red and green have never been my wardrobe colors of choice. I see no rational reason to use valuable time to pull out a bunch of lights and decorations to doll up the house only to take them down one short month later. Ditto that for indoor garlands and bedecked fireplace mantles.

And I’ve never been able to embrace the dead tree in the living room thing. The tree nearly puts me over the edge. Every year.

All around me, people and fami-

lies and neighborhoods and towns are jubilant with their Christmas preparations and jolly holiday spirits.

They sip eggnog and deck the halls with beaming smiles and overflowing ho-ho-hospitality.

I used to try to compensate for my deficiencies, but the only person I fooled was myself and only a fool does that year after year. Over time I’ve come to terms with the fact that I stink at holidays – all of them, not just Christmas.

For years I lamented my ineptitudes and wished I could be like everyone else – enthusiastically embracing holiday happiness all while wearing a blinking Christmas sweater.

Then, this year, I had an epiphany.

I’m not holiday-intolerant. I’m just easily bored.

The same tree with the same decorations in the same corner of the same room may be filled with nostalgia and warm fuzzies for some, but not me.

I guess I’m too pragmatic to be festive.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy this time of year. I just enjoy it in a different way from some (most) people. I do like eggnog and spending time with my family (not necessarily in that order). I enjoy giving gifts (even if everyone knows what they are getting ahead of time). I appreciate the true spirit and meaning of the season.

And, although I may not be filled to the brim with holiday cheer, I wouldn’t mind a cup of one.

This year I even decorated a little.

I hung the stockings, which I guess qualifies as a bedecked fireplace mantle. I got some poinsettias and a pine scented candle to up the ambience. I even hung a wooden plaque that proclaims “We believe.”

Maybe I’m not a total Grinch after all. Who knows, maybe next year I’ll even bake cookies.

Patti Bellock receives Judy Baar Topinka ‘Trailblazer’ Award State Representative Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale) was presented with the Judy Baar Topinka “Trailblazer” Award by the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform (ICPR) at the nonprofit organization’s Annual Awards Reception on Monday, Dec. 4. The award is named for the late Judy Baar Topinka, who served as Illinois State Treasurer from 1995-2007 and Illinois State Comptroller from 2011 until her death in December 2014. Former Illinois Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno also received the same award at the reception.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized along with my friend Chris Radogno in the spirit of the late Judy Baar Topinka, a true trailblazer and both an inspiration and a mentor to many of us women in Illinois government,” Rep. Bellock said. “I thank the Illinois Campaign

ONCC elects to implement Interim Runway Rotation Plan

On the morning of Friday, Dec. 8, the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) met to vote on a 2.5 year Interim Fly Quiet Plan.

The ONCC Ad Hoc Fly Quiet Com-

mittee presented a recommended Runway Rotation Plan (RRP).

The ONCC Ad Hoc Committee chose RRP A as their recommendation to ONCC after reviewing several options. The recommended option is essentially the same runway rotation plan that was followed by the Fly Quiet Test #3.

City officials strongly opposed this recommended plan, due to the fact that it will have a negative impact on areas of Elmhurst. Elmhurst submitted an alternative proposal, which

was discarded by the ONNC Ad Hoc Fly Quiet Committee.

Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley was especially unhappy with the decision.

“We are extremely disappointed with the ONCC’s decision and the process that got them to this vote,” he said in a statement released after the meeting. “Our hope is that the FAA understands that Option A will impact more individuals than any other flight pattern and refuses this plan.”

City Manager Jim Grabowski ex-

pounded on the unfairness of the plan for the residents of Elmhurst.

“We feel that our alternative proposal for the Interim Runway Rotation Plan demonstrated a fair balance of nighttime flights for all communities surrounding the airport, with 37% use of 4R/22L,” he said. “The ‘Option A’ plan does not represent a fair balance of nighttime flights.

Runway 4R/22L is proposed to be used 50% of the time, which directly impacts the residents of Elmhurst.

This year, the Library earned five out of five stars, one of only six libraries to earn that distinction in Illinois.

A total of 7,409 public libraries were rated nationwide and only 259 qualified as star libraries.

Previously, Elmhurst Public Library was awarded three- and four-star

rankings for seven consecutive years.

This is the first year for the Library to receive the coveted five-star rating.

“Receiving this award is especially satisfying because it took the combined efforts of the Elmhurst community, Library Board, and EPL staff to make this possible,” said Library Director Mary Beth Harper. “Our smart, flexible, and efficient staff, coupled with the support of our community is what makes the Library fantastic.”

Library Journal reviews public library data reported to the government—visits, checkouts, program attendance, digital materials, and public computer use per capita—and ranks the best performing libraries within budget categories. Elmhurst Public Library placed in the top ten nationwide and 1st in Illinois in the $5-9.9M category, with notably high visits and checkouts per capita.

In an article published with the

rankings, Library Journal explores the star libraries across the nation. For top libraries like Elmhurst Public Library, the two longest established per capita measures—circulation and visits— continue to establish libraries with star ratings.

The best libraries also have welcoming facilities with well-targeted programs, and collections with range and depth. Technology is also an important factor affecting scores.

The results demonstrated the disparate impacts, which RRP A has on the communities underneath the flight patterns of runways 4R/22L and 4L/22R. “Runway Rotation Option A impacts more people than the alternate options,” he said. “If the purpose of the Fly Quiet Plan is to study possibilities that limit the number of individuals affected by airplane noise, Option A is simply not the right choice.”

The ONCC ultimately chose Option A as the 2.5 year Interim Runway Rotation Plan, which will be sent to the FAA for their review process.

Holiday baking is 20-year tradition for three generations of friends

The holiday season is upon us and with that, friends and family come together to share in the joy of rituals and traditions.

This year, Jean Baker, Barbara Vinter, Cindy (Vinter) Ciluffo, and Susan (Vinter) Hillton celebrate the 20th anniversary of their tradition of baking holiday cookies together. Jean Baker, a home economics major, has always loved baking (perhaps inspired by her surname), and in the early 1980s, began inviting her friend Barbara Vinter’s daughters, Cindy and Susan, to her home to bake cookies. Cindy and Susan attended Jackson School at the time and remember what a treat it was for them.

“We would always make Peanut Butter Blossoms – peanut butter cookies with a Hershey’s Kiss pressed in the middle,” recalled Cindy.

“These became our favorite.”

The relationship among these four women spans three generations. Jean and Barbara’s mothers were best friends and were both very involved in the Elmhurst community. Jean’s mother, Jean Baker, Sr., was one of the first volunteers to help start the United Community Concerns Association (UCCA), and was also recognized in the book The First Ladies of Elmhurst: Prominent Women of the 20th Century, for her philanthropic work. Additionally, the Elmhurst Historical Society featured Jean, Jr. in an exhibit where she spoke in honor of her mother. Following this tradition of service, both Jean, Jr. and Barbara have been active volunteers for numerous Elmhurst organizations including the UCCA, PADS, Bethel Church, Elmhurst College, and the Elmhurst Historic Foundation.

Their cookie baking tradition began in 1997, the year Jean Baker, Sr. passed away.

“My mother invited Jean [Jr.] to our house to make holiday cookies with us, because she knew how hard the holidays would be for Jean that year,” said Cindy. “The next year, my mom’s father passed away and Jean invited us to bake at her house. We had so much fun baking holiday cookies together, we kept on doing it. We even managed to all bake cookies together the year Jean’s house burned down and she lived in a temporary apartment in Lombard.”

The women bake for two weekends in a row, beginning Thanksgiving weekend. They all contribute to the recipes.

“This year we are making 12 different varieties of cookies – two batches of each,” said Jean. “Every year, we like to try some new variety, but we each have our favorite. Mine are my Cream Wafer cookies. Because they are so labor intensive, we make them only once a year. They take three days to make.”

Resident packs a powerful punch, fights for a cause Raises funds for friend battling ALS; celebrates late husband’s birthday

For a split second, Maggie Ward-Kossak heard hundreds of her fans and friends chanting, “Maggie, Maggie, Maggie!” outside the boxing ring during her Muay Thai fight on Friday, Dec. 1. Kossak thought, “Wow,” but the 5’1”, 120-pound dynamo knew she had to stay focused on the match-up going on inside the ring.

Outside the ring at the Total Fight Challenge in Bedford Park’s Swanson Center, there were hundreds of supporters wearing Machine Gun Maggie shirts. There were Shannon Rovers bagpipers who led her to the ring at the start, and dozens of cameras were flashing. Kossak entered the ring and went three full rounds

against her opponent, ultimately winning the exhilarating and exhausting fight by unanimous decision.

Muay Thai is a standing combat sport that uses punching, kicking, and throwing elbows, knees and shins.

As she made her way to the ring listening to the crowd clearly in favor of her, Kossak said she felt elevated.

“I knew this was gonna be good,” she said.

“I couldn’t believe I’d feel this happy again without Paul being here.”

Remembering her husband Paul Paul Kossak, Maggie’s husband and father of their three children, Grace, Jack and Frances (Frankie), passed away in May of 2016.

He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer one month after Maggie competed in her first Mixed Martial Arts competition in 2014.

“After Paul was diagnosed, I felt like I had to be with my family,” she said. “I couldn’t take the time away in order to train to compete

again.”

But about three years after Paul’s diagnosis, the 48-year-old Kossak said she was ready to train again, but wasn’t doing it just for herself.

“I wanted to get back in it, yes, but mostly for someone else,” she said. “So many people were so amazing to me and my family when Paul was sick, that I just knew I wanted to pay it forward.”

And, pay it forward she did!

Donates proceeds to resident living with ALS Kossak, a Farmers Insurance agent based out of Oak Brook, sold about 300 tickets to the event at $50 each and 200 Machine Gun Maggie shirts at $20 each, with proceeds going to the Matt Toole family. Toole is an Elmhurst resident who has been living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease for several years, and whom Kossak knows from the Visitation School community.

“Matt is such an inspiration,” she said. “He

fights every day – along with his wife and their kids – and yet his smile is bigger and bigger every time I see him. Helping them has been such a cool way to pay it forward.”

The Tooles sat ringside at the fight with Matt Toole’s wheelchair right up against the outside of the octagon.

“We are so blessed and grateful that she would think of us and do this for us, and help us continue to spread the word about ALS,” said the 47-year-old Toole. “The energy in the room was amazing. We were so close that we could hear the thumps coming out of the ring.

The time and effort she put into getting ready for this battle emotionally and physically is pretty amazing. That spinning backhand move she used…I don’t think her opponent saw it coming!

“Living with ALS is challenging, but with Maggie in our corner, I know I can win.”

Honors Spanish students put lessons into action; raise funds for disaster relief Learning how to help a community in need is one thing. Actually taking action to help is another. Catherine Disterheft’s Honors Spanish students are learning that firsthand.

Disterheft’s three honors Spanish classes at York Community High School began the year learning about the power of community. During the next unit, on the power of creativity, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. By the time the class moved on to its third unit, the impact of technology, Disterheft’s students had expressed a desire to do something to help the victims of Hurricane Maria.

Disterheft saw it as a perfect opportunity to use the lessons learned in all three units.

“We wanted to teach the students that thinking creatively is not always just art and music, but it’s also a way of solving problems that arise in our communities and arise in our country,” she said. “I also wanted them to realize that they can use social media to positively influence others, and it’s not that difficult.”

Each of the three classes created a CrowdRise website to raise money for Red Cross Disaster Relief. Each class chose the title of its fundraiser, picked a fundraising goal, and wrote the fundraising story, in English and Spanish.

Within one day, the three webpages raised a combined total of $300.

By Dec. 6, the pages had raised $1,175.

“I think that when they see a real-life purpose to it, when they can

Training for the big event “It was Paul’s birthday – December 1,” she said. “I thought it was perfect, cause I don’t really know what to do with myself on his birthday. To walk into the ring following the Shannon Rovers and to hear everyone screaming my name was just crazy. I should have known how awesome people would be, ‘cause they were all amazing when Paul was sick.”

The time, training and dedication Maggie put into to prepare for the

competition was grueling.

“I trained every day for at least eight months,” she said. “Then with two months to go, I trained two times a day.”

Maggie says she took her family and friends along for the wild ride and she says her friends have now asked her to take up watercolors or dancing in the future.

“When I told my mom about my first fight in 2014, my mom said, ‘One and done,’” she laughed. “Then I had to tell her I was going to do it again, and she said, ‘two and through!’”

And though it was clearly evident she wasn’t fighting with one arm tied behind her back, Maggie, who wears glasses, quickly adjusted to only one eye at optimal vision.

“But it all worked out.

“I probably won’t compete again, but will continue to train.

Maggie summed up her experience ‘Feelin’ no pain’ thusly: During the fight, Maggie said she “I had the time of my life…I felt didn’t feel any pain when she was like Paul was there and was amazed struck or kicked. by the number of people who came “After the fight, my body was sore, and supported me.”

Immaculate Conception Grade School teams up with ABC 7, U.S. Marines In the early morning of Tuesday, Nov. 28, known to many as “Giving Tuesday,” students from Immaculate Conception Grade School (ICGS) appeared on the ABC 7’s morning news with meteorologist Tracy Butler.

The ABC 7 weather crew was stationed at the IHOP Restaurant on North Avenue in Melrose Park, a drop-off sight for the U.S. Marine Corps’ 2017 “Toys for Tots” campaign.

IHOP has teamed up with the U.S. Marines for the past few years in an effort to collect toys for children who might otherwise not receive gifts this Christmas.

ABC 7 also joined in this effort to “stuff the truck” with “Toys for Tots” on Nov. 28.

Families at ICGS donated countless toys for this cause in the week leading up to Thanksgiving. Then, on the Nov. 28, ICGS student council members, 1st graders, and members of an IC Parish Boy Scout Troop all helped to load those toys onto the U.S. Marine Corps truck, parked at the IHOP Restaurant.

Tracy Butler then interviewed IC Pastor, Father Tom Paul, and asked the students about what types of toys they thought should be donated.

New faces at First Congregational Church First Congregational United Church of Christ in Elmhurst is excited to announce two new and very key additions to their Congregation. Reverend Dr. Michael Daly joined the church as Senior Pastor in mid-October, bringing with him many years of experience and a very personable nature.

Most recently Rev. Daly served at New England Congregational UCC in Aurora where he was the Minister of Education and Mission.

Rev. Daly currently lives in Geneva with his wife, Suzy, and two young daughters, Chloe and Phoebe. He also has two grown sons: Connor and Brendan. Suzy is a special education teacher in Geneva and is also an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ.

Jim Molina has also joined the church as Organist and Choir Director. As a professional pianist, instructor, composer, arranger/orchestrator, he is bringing a new beat to the church. Jim has played everything from Bach to the Beatles and the church looks forward to him leading them in blended services that will encompass all styles of music. For many years Jim was the Music Director at First Congregational UCC in Downers Grove and was owner of the Oakbrook Academy of Music & Art. The shorthanded Knights went on the road and came away with a 62-56 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Riverside-Brookfield.

The victory moved the Knights to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in MSC Blue play.

“We were a little shorthanded,” said IC Catholic Prep coach TJ Tyrrell. “We were without Alex Meurer and Zen Tverdokhlib. We had other guys step up.”

IC Catholic Prep trailed 11-0 to start the game and was down 16-7 after the first quarter. The Knights trailed 30-26 at halftime and 44-38 after three quarters. The Knights then outscored R-B 24-12 in the fourth quarter.

Kevin Cheng led the Knights with 18 points, including two 3-pointers. Khali Saunders added 11 points and two steals. Kris Askew had 10 points (2 three-pointers) and two steals. Nico Gaudio had eight points and eight rebounds, while Dominic Gaudio had seven points, including two 3-pointers, and was lauded for his defensive play.

“Dom is a sophomore and played an outstanding game,” said Tyrrell.

“Their best player had been averaging 20 points a game. The combination of Dominic and Kris Askew and a few others who guarded him, they did an outstanding job containing him. He only had two 3-pointers and one was late and in desperation. He also had two free throws. So holding one of the top players in the conference to eight points was a key to the victory. Credit to Dom and Kris.

IC Catholic Prep graduate D’Amore finishes college volleyball career at St. John’s

Former IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball standout Delaney D’Amore wrapped up her college playing career recently.

D’Amore played the last four seasons for Division I St. John’s University in New York. The 5-9 libero-defensive specialist played in all 119 sets and 33 matches this season. She ranked second on the team with 357 digs (3.0 digs per set). She also had 93 assists and 17 aces.

D’Amore had a career-high 31 digs to go with six assists in a win against Sacramento State in August. The 31 digs were highest for a Big East Conference player in a four-set match this season.

She went over the 1,000-career dig

mark in a match against Seton Hall on Nov. 11. She had 10 or more digs in 14 matches this season and had four instances where she totaled 20 or more digs. She also had five matches where she had two service aces.

As a junior, D’Amore played in 71 sets and had 130 digs (1.83 digs per set). She tied a career high with three service aces in a win against Georgetown.

As a sophomore, she played in 113 sets across all 33 matches and led the Red Storm in digs with 382 (3.38 per set). At the time, D’Amore recorded a career-high 21 digs in a match against Auburn. In her freshman season, D’Amore played in 99 sets over 30 matches and ranked fifth on the team in digs with 144 (1.45 digs per set) and led all freshmen on the team in sets

played.

D’Amore was a four-time all-conference and all-academic pick at IC Catholic Prep and helped the Knights win the 2013 Class 2A state title. She is a communications major at St. John’s.

Preuss at Lewis University York alum Alexandra Preuss is a sophomore outside hitter on the Lewis University women’s volleyball team.

Preuss helped the Flyers finish a program-best 33-3 this season.

Preuss played in 94 sets in 35 matches (25 starts) and registered 257 kills (2.73 per set). She ranked fourth on the team in kills and third on the team in kills per set. Preuss also had 25 service aces and 237 digs (2.52 per set). Preuss was fifth on the team in digs and fourth in digs per set.

Lewis, which at one point was

ranked No. 1 in the country during the season, lost to Rockhurst in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship game.

Elmhurst College women’s basketball The Elmhurst College women’s basketball team was a 71-68 winner over Wheaton College in CCIW action.

Elmhurst made 11 three-pointers in the game to improve to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in conference action.

Jasmin Bailey had six 3-pointers to lead the way for Elmhurst. It was the second game in a row where she made six 3s. Mikaela Eppard recorded the fifth-highest single-game rebounding total in school history with 22 rebounds.

Bailey finished with 20 points. Hannah Henderson added 11 points, while

Eppard, Kelly Weyhrich and Kaela Jones each had 10 points, giving Elmhurst five players in double figures in scoring. Henderson also had eight assists.

Elmhurst College men’s basketball

The Elmhurst College men’s basketball team dropped a 98-85 decision in double overtime to Wheaton College in recent CCIW action.

Elmhurst fell to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in CCIW play.

Jake Rhode led Elmhurst with 26 points and 10 assists. Jeremy Ireland had 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Lavon Thomas had a season-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Ryan Patton had 13 points, while Justin Fox had eight points. Elmhurst shot 19 of 23 from the free-throw line (82.6 percent).

York boys basketball team plays pair of non-conference games Dukes to open Jack Tosh Holiday Classic against TF South

The York boys basketball team continued to navigate its competitive non-conference schedule recently.

The Dukes dropped a 42-35 game to Benet Academy and also lost a 7365 decision at West Aurora to close out last week.

In earlier action, York was a 61-37 West Suburban Conference Silver Division winner against Glenbard West.

York led 18-7 after the first quarter and 32-13 at halftime.

Angelo Martucci led the Dukes with 14 points. Sam Walsh added 11 points, while Nick Kosich had nine points and Erik Cohn finished with eight points. Nate Shockey had six points.

bounds, while John Milling had four rebounds. Kosich had three assists, while Martucci had four steals.

Shockey and Walsh each had three steals. York had 18 steals in the game and forced 27 Glenbard West turnovers, while committing only 13.

York shot 46.9 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line. Kosich, Shockey and Martucci each hit one 3-pointer.

York then was a 63-52 winner over East Aurora in non-conference action. York led 11-7 after the first quarter and 21-20 at halftime. The Dukes turned it up in the third quarter and outscored the Tomcats 25-12 to pull away.

Kosich led the Dukes with 18 points. Martucci had 11 points, while Shockey and Mike Pedote each had nine points. Walsh finished with

seven points. Walsh led the team in rebounds with six. Martucci had five rebounds, while Shockey had four rebounds. Martucci led the team with three assists and Walsh had five steals, while Milling and Pedote each had three steals.

Again, York was strong on defense, registering 15 steals and forcing 25 East Aurora turnovers.

York shot 47.8 percent from the field and also hit 7 of 19 three-point attempts. Kosich, Shockey and Pedote each sank two 3-pointers, while Milling had one 3-pointer.

Through the team’s first six games, Kosich was leading the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game. Martucci was second at 10.8 points per game, while Cohn was at 9.3 points, Walsh was at 9.0 points, Shockey at 7.3 points and Pedote at 4.7 points.

Meurer had 19 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. He shot 5 of 6 from the 3-point line. “Alex made extremely smart decisions with the basketball and found openings to get shots and then knocked them down,” said Tyrrell. “He played a great game for us.”

Nico Gaudio had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists.

“Nico has been playing strong for us in the post and has been doing a really good job finishing around the rim and using his strength to get position on bigger defenders and he’s still able to finish,” said Tyrrell.

Sophomore Ryan Wojalewicz added nine points, while Cheng had five rebounds and three assists.

“We’ve seen solid play from Ryan,” said Tyrrell. “He’s a sophomore post player and has really

impressed the staff so far. He’s an extremely hard worker who is very focused and extremely receptive to coaching. He’s working his butt off in the games and doing a lot of little things for us. He plays a big role on the team.”

Through the first six games, Cheng was leading the team in scoring at 13.7 points per game. Nico Gaudio was averaging 11 a game, while Meurer was averaging 10.6 points and Askew was at 7.0 points a game.

“Kevin is our offensive leader,” said Tyrrell. “He shot 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter against R-B. He did an outstanding job in that game.”

The team also has been bolstered

by Saunders’ presence. “Khali has been working his way back from football,” said Tyrrell. “He didn’t play against Lisle and came off the bench against R-B and was a force underneath the rim. He’s extremely athletic and strong. He had 11 points

and had a big steal down the stretch, plus he made big free throws.”

The Knights also recently did a team retreat to Michigan. “We went to a lake house in Michigan,” said Tyrrell. “The kids gave up their cellphones. The team did a lot of team-building stuff. We had a lot of roundtable talks. It was a good experience connecting the older players and new players. The players are getting to know the coaches and the coaches are getting to know the players.”

Tyrrell is happy where his team is heading six games into the season.

“Winning against R-B on the road was good,” he said. “We’re in a really good spot right now. We had the one overtime loss to Manteno. Actually, in hindsight it was a very good loss.

We analyzed film and looked at some things we were doing right. It helped us going forward in the Lisle and R-B games. Sometimes losses early in the season can be a good thing.”

Walsh was tops in rebounding at 5.5 per game. Kosich was leading the team in assists (13), while Martucci had a slight edge in steals (12) over Milling (11) and Kosich (10). Milling was the team leader in charges taken with three.

Kosich also was leading the team in 3-pointers made with 13. Martucci was tops in free-throw percentage at 81.2 percent, hitting 26 of his first 32 attempts.

York was 5-3 overall and 1-0 in WSC Silver play through late last week. York heads to Downers Grove North Friday for a WSC Silver game.

Jack Tosh Holiday Classic The bracket for the 44th annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic tournament at York has been released. The tournament this year runs Dec. 26-30 and features 32 teams from around the Chicago area.

The host Dukes open up play Dec. 26 at 8 p.m. against Thornton-Fractional South in Campbell Gym. York would play the winner or loser of the Stagg-Minooka game either at 8 p.m. (winner’s bracket) or 1:30 p.m. (loser’s bracket) on Dec. 27. The tournament title game is scheduled for Dec. 30 at 6 p.m.

Dukes off to 3-0 start in West Suburban Silver

The York girls basketball team means business.

The Dukes improved their mark to 6-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division play after a 47-26 conference win against Hinsdale Central.

York opened conference play with wins against Lyons Township and Proviso West.

“We are starting to pick things up,” said York coach Brandon Collings.

“We’ve talked about senior leadership and I think players such as Caylin Rufus are off to a great start. She and Danielle Dennis both are averaging 14 points a game. Caylin is at the point of our press and has helped us make some easy baskets. We’re also taking care of the basketball and playing some decent defense. We’re getting out and running on teams.

We’re off to a nice start. Things are coming together.”

Collings pointed out that after the Hinsdale win, the closest point differential in the games they have won is 12 points.

“The girls are starting to believe,” he said. “They see how good they could be and want to put in the work and get going in practice leading into games. Lyons, Hinsdale and Proviso, that’s three wins right away in conference.”

York’s win against Hinsdale Central marked the first road game of the season for the Dukes.

“It was nice to finally play a game on the road,” he said. “I wanted to see us in a different environment. We were able to get a win against a tough conference team. Starting out 3-0 in conference is huge.”

Against Hinsdale, York led 15-2 after the first quarter and was up 26-8 after two quarters.

Dennis led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points, including sev-

en in the first quarter. Matty Stark and Rufus each had 10 points. Stark made three 3-pointers. Rufus had seven of her 10 points in the third quarter. Kathleen Levins contributed six points on a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Kiah Rufus had five points.

“We jumped out on them and then stumbled a little bit,” said Collings.

“We gave up some offensive rebounds, more than we should have.

We didn’t play our best basketball, but we played well enough to get another victory.”

Collings said the team has been receiving contributions from a host of players, some who don’t necessarily show up in the box scores with large point production.

“Madison Park is doing a great job of taking care of the basketball,” said Collings. “Lauren Viola has done a great job on defense, usually guarding one of the tougher girls on the other team. Kathleen Levins has come off the bench and has been phenomenal with her post defense and scoring. Matty Stark has found her shot for sure. She’s our biggest outside threat.”

Collings pointed out Stark had totals of 13, seven and 11 points in a recent three-game stretch.

“She’s hit eight 3-pointers in our past three games,” said Collings last week. “When you don’t have a lot of shooters, teams will pack it in against us. That can be a big difference. Lyons Township did that against us and she hit three 3s and that was a big difference in that game.”

York will play its final game before its Christmas tournament at Riverside-Brookfield tonight against Downers Grove North.

“We’re excited about the start,” said Collings. “People are starting to notice our start. We just want to keep getting better and show how good we actually can be.”

York’s fall signees include Kyra Kroll for softball at Western Illinois University, Sean MacGregor for cross country at the University of Dayton, Caylin Rufus for women’s basketball at Upper Iowa University, Olivia Sasanelli for cheerleading at Grand Valley State, Mark Schneeloch for lacrosse at Wittenberg University and Isabel Torres for lacrosse at New Hampshire University.

Jensen was second in the 500 with a time of 5:08.79. Brennan Sanders took third with a time of 5:44.18.

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team won three recent Metro Suburban Conference Red Division games in a row.

In a 53-33 win over Ridgewood, Olivia Schuringa led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds. Sureya Alex had 13 points and three steals.

Hannah Schuringa had eight points and eight rebounds, while Heidi Westra had eight points, five rebounds, seven assists and six steals.

In a 71-29 win over Elmwood Park, Jordyn Strube led Timothy with 18 points. Hannah Schuringa had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Olivia Schuringa had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Hannah Schuringa had 13 points and 13 rebounds in a 47-15 win over Guerin Prep. Alex added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Lauren Gehrke had eight points.

Timothy Christian boys basketball The Timothy Christian boys basketball team continued its strong start to the 2017-2018 season with a pair of recent Metro Suburban Conference Red Division wins.

The Trojans defeated both Elmwood Park and Walther Christian to move to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

In the win against Elmwood Park, Timothy jumped out to a 20-6 lead

after the first quarter and led 35-18 at halftime.

Senior Michael Thomas led the Trojans with 23 points on the strength of 9-for-16 shooting. Brandon Orange had nine points, while Justin Baez had eight points and Ty Merrick finished with seven points. Timothy shot 44 percent from the field.

Baez and Thomas each made two 3-pointers. Timothy shot 8-for-17 (47 percent) from the 3-point line. Merrick, Matt Owens, Mike Martens and Orange each had one 3-pointer. Merrick was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Merrick also led the team in rebounds with 11, while Orange pulled in 10 rebounds and Nick Huisman had seven rebounds. Merrick finished with six assists, while Huisman had three steals. Baez and Thomas each had two steals.

The Trojans then downed Walther Christian 63-44 to move to 3-0 in conference play.

The two teams were tied 13-13 after the first quarter before Timothy outscored Walther 13-4 in the second quarter and 23-16 in the third quarter.

Orange led the Trojans with 18 points. Thomas had 16 points, while Huisman scored 10 points. Owens, a sophomore, finished with nine points and Merrick had seven points. Merrick, Owens and Thomas each made a 3-pointer.

In addition to his 18 points, Orange

also had 19 rebounds. Merrick added nine rebounds and Huisman had seven rebounds. Merrick was tops in assists with five, while Baez had four.

On the season through seven games, Orange was leading the team in scoring at 15.1 points per game.

Thomas was second at 13.1 points.

Merrick and Owens each were averaging 6.7 points. Orange was tops in rebounding at 11.3 per game. Huisman was second at 6.7 per game and Merrick was third at 6.3. Merrick also was the team leader in assists at 5.1 per game and steals at 1.4 per game.

Baez was the team leader in 3-point shooting with 10 made. Merrick was leading in free-throw percentage at 75 percent (12-for-16).

The Trojans return to action Friday at home at Ward Athletic Center against Ridgewood in another MSC Red contest.

Jack Tosh Holiday Classic The Timothy Christian boys basketball team once again will compete in the 44th annual Jack Tosh Holiday Classic tournament at York Dec. 2630.

Timothy opens play Dec. 26 at 6 p.m. against Providence Catholic.

The Trojans would play either Elk Grove or Naperville North on Dec. 27 either at 7:30 p.m. (win) or 1 p.m. (lose).

The Tosh Holiday Classic again features 32 teams from around the Chicago area.

The Dukes made it a sweep of the relays by winning the 200 medley with a time of 1:48.85. That team included Will Salek, Harrington, Kosanovich and DeGrace.

Junior varsity wins for York included Mark Gemelli in the 50 free, Daniel Kowalski in the 200 free, Max Shemroske in the 500 free, Evan Shemroske in the backstroke, Tom Croster in the breaststroke and the butterfly and Josh Allen in the 200 IM. Matthew Perrier also was victorious in the JV diving competition.

York’s JV won the 200 relay with Robert Lothian, Kowalski, Gemelli and Sean Mayfield. The Dukes won the 400 relay with Allen, Croster, Max Shemroske and Evan Shemroske.

Ongoing Illinois Bicentennial series begins Illinois turns 200 on Dec. 3, 2018, and over the course of the next year the Independent is helping to commemorate the event.

The Elmhurst Independent and dozens of publications throughout Illinois will print a weekly series of articles featuring key moments, figures, industries and events that help to make Illinois unique. Some of the first articles include the Underground Railroad, coal mining, the dueling Peoria territory and top Illinois athletes through the years.

along the Illinois River, finding safety among the Kaskaskia Indian tribe.

Marquette founded the Mission of the Immaculate Conception, but left the mission in the hands of Father Pierre-Gabriel Marest due to Marquette’s poor health.

The mission had to be moved several times due to conflicts between the Kaskaskia, Illini Confederation and the Iroquois.

Eventually, the mission planted roots at the confluence of the Mississippi River and the Michigamea River, which is now known as the Kaskaskia River.

The village of Kaskaskia was established in 1703, and was mainly inhabited by French traders and their wives.

The village’s fertile ground in the American Bottoms, along with its positioning at the confluence of two rivers, led it to be a hub of agriculture and trading. It also became a focal point for warring British and French during the French and Indian War. In 1756, fearing attack, the townspeople built Fort Kaskaskia on a hill overlooking the town.

The fort was then destroyed by the townspeople who feared it would fall into British control after the French lost the war.

Those who did not want to live under the impending British rule moved to St. Louis or Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. The town fell to the

British and was kept under control of the crown until July 4, 1778, when George Rogers Clark led an expedition of American troops into the village to liberate it.

After a two-month journey over 1,000 miles, Clark and his 175 men arrived in Kaskaskia to take the area.

Many of the British had been withdrawn from the area, and Clark captured the settlement without a shot being fired.

With Clark in town, residents rang the Liberty Bell of the West, which got its name that day. The bell was originally given to the Catholic Church of the Illinois Country by King Louis XV of France. The bell was cast in France in 1741, making it 11 years older than the Liberty Bell that sits in Philadelphia.

An inscription on the side of the bell reads “Pour Leglise des Illinois par les Soins du Roi D’outre,” which translates to “for the Church of the Illinois, by gift of the King across the water.”

One side of the bell is ornamented with the royal lilies of France. The other side bears a cross and pedestal, with the top and arms of the cross terminating in grouped fleur de lis.

Taking Kaskaskia was the first step in Clark’s plan to capture the western headquarters of the British at Detroit.

The bell is now a tourist attraction, much like the Immaculate Conception Church that sits next door.

As I type, we are hours away from the Andrea Bocelli concert in Chicago with the Lyric Opera. The famous Italian tenor is in the states for just seven shows and I am delighted to be in his presence, even if it’s from Section 202, Row R. Last night, we saw Andy Grammer (we are new fans after seeing him live; he and his band are mega-talented and tons of fun) and Kelly Clarkson. I adore her realness and her great big voice. Her stories are impromptu and funny, and she knocks it out of the park with her singing. Kelly’s new album is very soulful and I suggest you run out and buy ten copies. (I love to support artists the old-fashioned way, you know, by buying their music and attending their shows.)

You’ve heard me say it before and I will continue to proclaim until my dying breath that music (and live music especially) is good for the soul.

We’ve taken in a variety of shows this year. Kristin Chenoweth, Leslie Odom, Jr., and Megan Hilty belt out the show tunes with such power and joy that I get misty-eyed and my heart does flip flops. We are heading to New York City to see Megan perform again in late December at Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony orchestra.

Our NYC jaunt includes Ingrid Michaelson’s holiday show as well. And we will take in whatever else grabs our fancy (and still has tickets available that don’t cost over five hundred

Exhibit reflects on frequent Mies collaborator Lilly Reich Last week, the Elmhurst Art Museum released new exhibition images from Chicago-based artist Alex Chitty’s “They will bloom without you,” a site-specific exhibition in conversation with the museum’s McCormick House, one of just three residences designed

by Mies van der Rohe. The exhibition, which also reflects on the architect’s relationship with frequent collaborator Lilly Reich, is on display now through January 7, 2018.

Chitty conceived of her installation and “collaboration” with the home by imagining how people used the McCormick House as a living space while also responding to its cool, minimal interior. Her investigation began with dualities present within the architecture of Mies’s McCormick House: the rectangular North and South wings of the home are joined at a singular point, and the glass walls that enclose the home also allow views of the exterior. Her

sculpture, drawings, photographs and video reflect upon simultaneous states such as interior/ exterior, movement/stillness, and the narrative/ utilitarian function of objects.

The title is a reference to Chitty’s observations of flowers, in particular lilies, and how their daily bloom takes place independent of an audience. The lilies also gesture toward the designer and architect Lilly Reich who collaborated with Mies, but is often omitted from the credits of their collaborations. Like Chitty’s collaboration with the home itself, this collaboration between Reich and Mies is also omnipresent in the exhibition – including You will never be able to directly see the gap between your own eyes, pictured on the right, above.

This piece links two tubular side chairs from Mies’s MR series, which Reich influenced.
