District 205 discusses plans for secure entrances

Project at Fischer will cause $560,000 budget variance

The meeting of the District 205 School Board held on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St., featured a summary of the board’s recent finance committee meeting on Nov. 19.

Christopher Whelton, the district’s assistant superintendent of finance and operations, mentioned the upcoming projects to create secure entrances at five district schools, including Fischer Elementary School.

The project at Fischer reportedly has to include an addition to the main office, for purposes of parity.

That addition will reportedly cause the project at Fischer to have a budget variance of about $560,000 over the previous estimate.

Collins noted that the list of figures provided by Whelton contained tentative numbers.

The projects will go out to bid in January. More School Board news inside.

City of Elmhurst holiday events Holiday Toy and Mitten Drive The City of Elmhurst will be collecting toys for children in need this holiday season. Drop new, unwrapped toys in the bins located at City Hall (209 N. York St.), Fire Station 1 (404 N. York St.), Fire Station 2 (601 S. York St.), and the Elmhurst Police Station (125 E. 1st Street) by Dec. 20.

Holiday Light Recycling The City of Elmhurst is partnering with SCARCE (School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education) for the annual holiday lights recycling program.

Look for the bin with the “Holiday Lights” sticker in the City Hall lobby, 209 N. York Street, open Monday Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Acceptable items include mini-lights, traditional lights, extension cords, rope lights, and LED lights in both working and non-working condition. Lawn ornaments or other holiday decorations will not be accepted. Lights will be collected until Jan. 31, 2020.

Keep the wreath red Each year the Elmhurst Fire Department teams up with the Illinois Fire Chief’s Association and neighboring fire departments in the “Keep the Wreath Red” program. This year, the program will run for the entire month of December The holiday fire safety program is designed to increase fire safety awareness.

A holiday wreath will hang on the outside of both fire stations. In the event of a holiday- related fire, firefighters will replace one of the red bulbs with a white one. The goal is to keep the bulbs on that wreath red.

Fire safety reminders for a safe holiday season include keeping live Christmas trees watered, making sure all illuminated decorations are in good condition, making sure your fireplace is in good working order, using candles with caution, not overloading extension cords or outlets with excessive holiday lights, and making sure smoke detectors work.

School Board capsules Here’s what’s happening at District 205

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at the District 205 Center, 162 S. York St. All seven board members attended the meeting.

There were no public comments.

• ‘Thoughtexchange’ agreement approved Following brief discussion, the board voted unanimously to approve a $24,000 service agreement with Fulcrum Management Solutions/ Thoughtexchange. The agreement will reportedly facilitate community engagement through the Thrive 205 project. The agreement allows for multiple community engagements throughout the year. Thoughtexchange is a tool of community feedback that gathers information from the community. Feedback, which will be provided by students, parents and staff members, will help the board and administration develop strategies to reduce stress and anxiety among district students.

• Calendars approved for 202021, 2021-22 The board voted unanimously to approve the school calendars for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years. A committee including representatives from District 205 employee groups, as well as a PTA representatives, conducted multiple meetings to dis-

cuss and make recommendations for the school calendars.

In the 2020-21 calendar, the first day of student attendance for all levels will be Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2020. The last day for all levels will be Thursday, May 27, 2021. The last day could be extended to as late as June 4, 2021, if any emergency days are used.

Winter break will begin on Dec. 23, 2020, with students returning on Jan. 6, 2021. Spring break will begin on March 29, 2021, with students returning on April 5, 2021.

York High School’s graduation will take place on Sunday, May 23, 2021.

The 2021-22 school year will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2021.

The last day will be Friday, May 27, 2022. The last day could be extended up to five days to June 6, 2022, if emergency days are used.

The winter break will begin on Dec. 23, 2021, with students returning on Jan. 6, 2022. Spring break will begin on March 28, 2022, with classes resuming on April 4, 2022.

York High School’s Class of 2022 will graduate on Sunday, May 22, 2022.

• District hires executive director of technology Board members voted 5-0 to approve the hiring of Robert Bialk as the district’s executive director of technology. Bialk will have an annual base salary of about $131,000, and a start date of no later than July 1, 2020. Bialk currently works in Lincolnshire Prairie View School Dis-

trict 103, which feeds into Stevenson High School. He will replace David Smith—District 205’s current executive director of technology.

Board members Jim Collins and Karen Stuefen abstained from voting on the motion to hire Bialk. Neither board member explained why they abstained.

The board will hold its next regular meeting—its final meeting of 2019 -- on Dec. 17. The board will hold its first meeting of 2020 on Jan. 14.

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Dec. 3 Ralph Robertson, 54, of Roselle, was charged with criminal trespass to real property in the 100 block of N. Michigan at around 3:35 p.m.

A complainant in the 200 block of E. Park told police at around 6:15 p.m. that a known suspect had thrown something through a rear window causing damage. This case is pending investigation.

Nov. 30 Police said officers responded for the report of a possible domestic in the 900 block of Riverside at around 2:30 a.m. where a female was heard crying. It was determined that nothing physical occurred between the victim and the suspect, who was found to have punched a glass framed picture. Both parties left the hotel at the manager’s request. The manager of the hotel will review the damage and determine if charges will be pursued.

A victim in the 100 block of E. Schiller told police at around 6:31 p.m. that she believes an unknown suspect had purposely cut her brake lines while her vehicle was parked at the above location. This case is pending investigation.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct Nov. 28-Dec. 2 A victim in the 400 block of Avery told police that she had been pushed down by her daughter sometime between the above dates.

A second interview with the victim created a story change and conflicting recollection of events. The DuPage County Adult Protective Services were contacted for follow-up.

Nov. 30 A 24-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 100 block of E. Lake at around 11:32 p.m.

Police said officers responded for a report of subjects fighting in the parking lot. An officer observed the victim was bleeding from a cut and showed bruising. The victim told police that subsequent to a verbal argument, the suspect punched her in the face and she slapped the suspect in self-defense. The suspect had cuts to her hand and admitted to striking the victim first.

Nov. 28 Daniel Gonu, 32, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/public intoxication in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 9:05 p.m. Police said Gonu threw beer at patrons inside a pub after being told to leave. According to police, Gonu was located outside and was intoxicated, and then attempted to gain entry to the pub again.

Anthony Michael Kuta, 26, of Villa Park, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/ befouling property in the 100 block of S. York at around 6:11 a.m. Police said a reporting officer observed Kuta urinating on bushes on the south side of a building.

Dec. 3 Jesus Cabrera, 20, of Dolton, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of cannabis, possession of open alcohol, driving while license suspended and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Prospect at around 11:36 a.m.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication Dec. 2 John P. Porter, 60, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident in the 100 block of Berteau at around 4:21 p.m. Police said reporting officers responded for a well-being check for a subject sleeping behind the steering wheel. After waking up, Porter moved forward, striking a police car, according to police. Police said Porter admitted to consuming alcohol.

Nov. 30 Alfonso A. Fuentes, 44, of Harvey, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and driving without headlights when required subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 1:32 a.m.

Nov. 29 Lesli Becerra, 26, of Addison, was charged with two counts of aggravated DUI, obstructing identification, driving while license revoked, improper lane usage, disobeying a traffic control device, improper lighting and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Third and York at around 1:33 a.m.

Jennifer Rodriguez, 30, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of open alcohol, speeding and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Michigan at around 12:05 a.m.

Nov. 28 Kevin Mueller, 29, of Lombard, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding, disobeying a traffic control device and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Riverside and Route 83 at around 1:04 a.m.

Harassment, threats Nov. 28 A victim in the 100 block of Fellows Court told police that on Nov. 27, he obtained an order of protection against the suspect. The reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect; however, the phone call was not in violation of the order.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance

Dec. 4 Police said that while on duty as a school

Dec. 1 Eric Burnett, 31, of Wheaton, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, aggravated DUI, DUI, improper lane usage and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 3:02 a.m. Burnett also was found to have a valid warrant from the Oak Park Police Department, police said. According to police, a search of Burnett yielded one pill of Ecstasy.

Nov. 29 Corsica Taylor, 20, of River Grove, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of cannabis and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Indiana at around 11:34 p.m.

Nov. 27 Ildeberto Gomez, 20, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 11:08 p.m.

Craig Kestner, 28, of Schaumburg, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, obstructing justice, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, one headlight and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near I-290 and Lake at around 9:19 p.m. Police said Kestner attempted to throw a crack pipe to the ground and smash it with his foot. The suspect was also in possession of crack cocaine, according to police.

Dylan T. Smith, 28, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 7:50 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances Dec. 4 A reporting officer responded to the front lobby of a building in the 100 block of E. First at around 10:27 a.m. for reports of a male suspect removing his clothes. Upon arrival, the suspect was found lying in the east corner of the lobby. Police reportedly observed that the suspect had a half-empty bottle of vodka in his possession and was intoxicated. Medics responded and transported the suspect to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Nov. 30 A reporting officer responded to the above location for a suspicious circumstances report near Euclid and Meister at around 6:38 a.m.

Upon arrival, a complainant told police that during her morning run, she was almost struck by a vehicle that was delivering newspapers.

The suspect yelled “Get your (expletive) off the road. I will run you over” and revved the vehicle’s engine and drove straight at the complainant. The complainant ran from the scene and called 911. An investigation is pending.

Nov. 23 A caretaker for a home in the 100 block of

E. Columbia told police at around 1:14 p.m. it looked as if someone had been inside of the house. Upon arrival, officers observed that the basement window had been kicked in. The owner of the property believes her son made entry to the home and did not wish to pursue charges.

Dec. 4 Residential burglary was reported in the 500 block of W. St. Charles at around 8:44 p.m.

A victim told police that an unknown suspect forced open the rear door to their apartment.

Once inside, the suspect took numerous jewelry items. The scene was processed by an evidence technician.

Dec. 3 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 11:05 a.m. A complainant told police that there appeared to be an unusual amount of over the counter medications missing from the shelves.

Upon reviewing store security cameras, the complainant observed two suspects removing large amounts of medications and hiding them inside their jackets. An investigation is pending. The first suspect was described as a white female in her early to mid-20s with sandy-blonde hair worn up in a bun, wearing a dark-colored oversized winter jacket that had a fur-edged hood, with a gray-colored hoodie worn underneath the jacket. The second suspect was described as a white female in her early to mid-20s with long blonde hair, eyeglasses, wearing a dark-colored oversized winter jacket and gray boots.

Dec. 1 A complainant in the 500 block of S. York told police at around 12:51 a.m. that he was contacted via telephone by a suspect posing as a 7-Eleven corporate IT employee. The suspect requested the complainant to load a MoneyPak Green Dot gift card with cash and to provide the card number and the barcode number from the card. The complainant believed it was a legitimate request.

Nov. 30 Kendra Onorato, of Downers Grove, was charged with retail theft at a gas station in the 1000 block of N. York at around 2:43 a.m. Police said the suspect took a carton of cigarettes and left the store without paying, entering a possible black Ford and fled south on York.

Armed robbery was reported at a gas station in the 200 block of E. Butterfield at around 5:30 a.m. A complainant told police that two suspects entered the store and one displayed a black handgun. The suspects ordered the complainant into the back room and stole cash and cartons of cigarettes. An investigation is pending. One of the suspects was described as a black male in his early 20s wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, a black scarf around his face, gloves, blue jeans and tan boots. The second suspect was described as a black male in his early 20s wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, a red shirt, gloves, tan pants and black gym shoes.

Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Special Ability Science Programs for the Detroit Public Schools in the 1960s, then served as the Macomb County Science Center Director and Coordinator of Gifted and Talented Programs at the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) in Mt. Clemens, Michigan for more than 30 years. Dr. Putz lectured at dozens of universities and has made more than 100 presentations at science education and gifted and talented conferences across the United States and in Japan. After serving in the Reserves for more than 20 years, Dr. Putz attained the rank of Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery. He served on the boards of many non-profits, associations and community groups and was chosen as the National Outstanding Science Supervisor by the U.S. National Science Supervisors Association.

Gerard was an avid traveler, sports fanatic, outdoorsman and #1 fan of his wife’s gourmet cooking. One of his favorite places on earth was Popham Beach, Maine, where he enjoyed some of his favorite things: lobster and drawn butter, fish chowder, bonfires, walks on the beach, cigars on the porch and a glass of Drambuie. He was a loving Grandpa and Papa to Hannah, Johnny and Meera and took pride in their every accomplishment.

Many people looked to Dr. Putz as a role model, leader and inspiration, and his wide influence in this world is likely immeasurable by any scientific method.

Donald E. Young, 87 Donald E. Young, a 55-year resident of Elmhurst, passed away peacefully on Nov. 22, in his home at the age of 87. Beloved husband for 56 years of Peggy Young, nee Lough.

Don was a devoted and dedicated husband, father and grandfather, enjoying time spent with his family.

Above all, he was committed to being an instrumental part of their lives.

He loved the church and was a man of strong faith.

Dr. Gerard J. Putz, 79 Dr. Gerard J. Putz, of Elmhurst, passed away recently at the age of 79. Beloved husband of Sharon; loving father of Michael (Connie) Putz of Menlo Park, California, Kevin (Michael McNamara) Putz of Evanston, Illinois, and Jenny (Bob) Kopach of Elmhurst, Illinois; cherished grandfather of Hannah Kopach, Johnny Kopach and Meera Putz; son of the late Leonita and Jacob Putz; brother of Jacob, Mary Agnes, Diana, Louis and Jeanette and the late David; uncle to precious nieces and nephews; friend to many around the world.

In 1984, Dr. Putz founded the National Science Olympiad along with his wife Sharon and his educational partner, Jack Cairns of Delaware. It grew into one of the largest and most prestigious team science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) competitions in the country. Over the past 35 years, millions of students and teachers who have experienced Science Olympiad credit the program with launching their interest and careers in STEM. Dr. Putz obtained a bachelor’s degree in Science from the University of Detroit, then served as an active duty officer in the U.S. Army, later gaining a Master’s in Guidance and Counseling from Wayne State University, a Master’s in Arts and Liberal Sciences from Wesleyan University, and a Doctorate in Secondary Education from Wayne State University. He began his career teaching high school

Parenting is ever-changing

Most of us start out thinking we can do it all, and soon find out that there is no way (no how, not ever) to do it all. So we make choices. We choose our issues and priorities and forge ahead.

A wise friend and mother of two teenagers explained this to me back when my kids were toddlers. She’d decided to make her issue R-rated movies. She and her husband decided to be more lenient about piercings, clothing, curfews and language, but they positively put their foot down when it came to any movie with a rating stronger than PG-13.

I listened to her stories of teen rebellion and rule-breaking. I empathized as she struggled with her daughter’s decision to pierce her nose. I understood her frustration the night she caught her son watching a forbidden R-rated movie and the proverbial “stuff” hit the fan. I vowed never to let my kids become teenagers.

Movies weren’t the issue at our house. Toy guns were. When our two oldest boys were very young, my husband and I decided we wouldn’t have toy guns in the house.

This isn’t as easy as it sounds.

First, we learned that an item doesn’t have to be a gun to have shooting power. Over the years we’ve been shot at with Legos, blocks, hockey sticks and the occasional index finger. Anything, it seems, can become a gun when your world is governed by imagination.

What to do? We retreated, restrategized and came up with a new parental rationale and psychological justification (fancy terms that basically meant we were lying to ourselves). The toys the boys were “shooting” with weren’t guns.

They didn’t resemble guns. Our boys were playing, but at least not with something that resembled a real weapon. We felt refortified -somewhat.

But then the boys visited the homes of friends who were allowed to play with guns. Another glitch.

We decided to employ “When in Rome” logic. Toy guns existed in other peoples’ houses, but not ours.

We encountered another bump in the road when one of them discovered Star Wars. What is a light saber? Our logic went as follows: Although it is a weapon, we decided that it’s a make-believe one. It doesn’t shoot and isn’t a gun. Darth Vader’s spear of choice gained entry into our home.

At times, we were scrutinized for our no-guns stance. We were hunting family. The boys went to deer camp as soon as their shoulders were wide enough to keep the blaze orange vest from falling to the ground. My husband even let me know that he thought I was being too rigid.

So we discussed, reassessed, and revised.

After the birth of our third son, the boys outnumbered us and that provided them with an advantage.

One summer I bought them small water pistols to use at the lake. They say evolution is a gradual process.

Eventually we slacked off even more and got them the large more powerful water blasters. That segued into Nerf guns. We justified that soft bullets couldn’t hurt anyone or break any windows. In essence time and the environment wore us down. We caved.

I’d like to say I’m the perfect parent, but I think I’ve thoroughly debunked that theory. I’d also like to claim that consistency is my forte, but I can’t. What I do believe is that families and viewpoints and priorities are ever-changing and it’s nearly impossible not to change along with that.

And that’s okay. No need to apologize for being human.

The guns issue at our house has dissipated as I’ve grown older (and more tired) and the boys have grown older (and more independent).

They no longer play with toys so it’s no longer something we need to address. As a parent, though, I’m glad it was a point of discussion as they were growing up. The boys understand that guns are serious business. The issue has given us opportunities for discussion – not to mention debate.

And that, right there, is a good thing.

More than $40,000 was raised on the heels of the announcement that ECPA has secured the land at 109-119 West First Avenue.

“Low vision” refers to any distortion of sight that cannot be corrected to normal or even nearnormal with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery.

Ranging from simply having blurry vision to more serious double vision, the immediate consequences are often the same—difficulty with performing daily activities such as reading newsprint or screen script, watching TV, or crossing the street safely. To counter these problems, the magnifying glass remains the most common low-vision aid. It is also possible to have small magnifying lenses built into prescription lenses as bifocals. In addition, special lenses that work like miniature telescopes can be mounted on glasses to aid far vision. IC Catholic Prep announces Illinois State Scholars IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) has announced that 11 students from the graduating class of 2020 have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), a state agency.

This year, more than 17,500 honorees join the other top students who have been honored for their academic achievements since the designation was first introduced in 1958.

“We are proud of this group of young men and women from IC Catholic Prep for achieving Illinois State Scholar status,” said Thomas Schergen, principal. “They work hard every day and are dedicated to achieving excellence in their academic, extracurricular, and spiritual lives. Each one is a modern day example of our school’s vision to prepare young people who are capable of learning, leading, and serving in today’s world.”

Illinois State Scholars represent approximately the top ten percent of high school seniors from 757 high schools across the state. Illinois State Scholars are chosen based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT

This is the latest move undertaken by the company’s new leadership team. In their first few months, they announced a new People & Culture Department, enhanced Agent Development training and coaching programs, and developed strategic alliances for a variety of marketing programs.

In November, the company was named the No. 1 Top Workplace in Chicago by the Chicago Tribune.

Coin to be issued to mark 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage In accordance with a law championed by State Rep. Deb Conroy (D-Villa Park) for Illinois to issue a coin in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, the Illinois State Treasurer’s office is now accepting proposals for prospective artists.

“Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the constitutional right of women to vote,” she said. “In its honor, I passed a measure to issue a commemorative coin to celebrate this hard-won achievement and to serve as a reminder of all those who have devoted their lives to the struggle for equality of the sexes.”

Conroy led the charge to pass Senate Joint Resolution 28 to direct the Illinois State Treasurer to issue a coin to commemorate the 100thanniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 2020. Those interested in designing the coin must submit a portfolio of their qualifications to the Treasurer by Dec. 18.

Finalists, announced Jan. 3, will then be asked to submit their design. For

As co-chair of the House Democratic Women’s Caucus, Conroy helped to pass a number of measures to empower women. To ensure youth have a clear understanding of personal boundaries from an early age, she supported House Bill 3550 to require sex education curriculum includes an age-appropriate discussion on the meaning of consent. Conroy also supported the Reproductive Health Act, Senate Bill 25, to protect reproductive rights and women’s bodily autonomy.

“At a time when there is a concerted effort to erase many of the strides that women have made to advance equality, it is now more important than ever to remember how far we have come and our continued duty to ensure progress is not lost but gained,” she added. “I encourage anyone with a passion for art and equality to submit a design proposal for the honorary coin.”

At the Jingle & Mingle Marketplace held at the Elmhurst Art Museum, Annette and Matt Kmoch of Country Jam & Jelly had their variety of goods on display. Their specialty jams and jellies are handstirred and made in small batches for maximum flavor.

Terra Vista executive director receives national award Natalie McFarland, the executive the service of individuals and famidirector of Terra Vista of Oakbrook Terrace, received a special honor last week.

The National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) recognized McFarland as the 2019 Certified Dementia Practitioner of the Year.

The award was a surprise to McFarland, who believed she was about to attend a routine meeting when she returned from a training session and walked into Terra Vista on the afternoon of Dec. 3. Instead, she was greeted by her husband, numerous colleagues and the NCCDP representatives who flew in from the East Coast to present the award.

Located at 1635 S. Ardmore Ave., Terra Vista of Oakbrook Terrace is an assisted living facility dedicated to caring for people with dementia. Terra Vista, which opened about three years ago, can accommodate about 100 residents.

Illinois State Senator Suzy Glowiak attended last week’s event to congratulate McFarland for receiving the national award.

“What a wonderful achievement,” said Glowiak, who represents the 24th District, which includes portions of Oakbrook Terrace and several surrounding communities. “I’m happy to be here at Terra Vista, where you are working passionately, tirelessly and enthusiastically to fight the good fight, to improve the quality of life for our family and friends.”

Moshe Bellows, a Principal of Terra Vista and Managing Member of MAC Ventures, also praised McFarland before the presentation of the award.

“Today, the NCCDP is confirming something that most of us in this room have known for a very long time—that Natalie McFarland is simply the best,” said Bellows. “An inspired, passionate leader who combines her multidimensional talents in

lies who are often facing difficult, stressful choices and situations, Natalie is always acting and empowering others with immense grace, deep knowledge and sage wisdom.”

Lynn Biot-Gordon, who co-founded the NCCDP in 2003 and serves as its chief operating officer, joined NCCDP President Rhonda Brand in presenting the award to McFarland.

Biot-Gordon noted that the NCCDP promotes standardized dementia care nationwide. The organization developed a curriculum that is taught throughout the country. Terra Vista of Oakbrook Terrace utilized the NCCDP’s dementia education program.

Biot-Gordon said the NCCDP received hundreds of applications submitting nominees for the 2019 Certified Dementia Practitioner of the Year. The multiple nominations from McFarland’s colleagues. Those nominations described McFarland as “a dedicated advocate for those living with dementia and their families,” as well as “the epitome of a hands-on and approachable leader.” Another nomination related McFarland as “an intelligent woman who is kind, and has incredible patience and knowledge.”

There are more than 200,000 Certified Dementia Practitioners in the United States. Those practitioners work in all aspects of the healthcare industry, including hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living communities.

Biot-Gordon added that the NCCDP’s Practitioner of the Year honor is given to “someone who shows exemplary examples of outstanding delivery of dementia care in a loving, significant, sensitive way, and motivates others around them to achieve great dementia care.”

The award included a $500 check, as well as an announcement on a billboard in New York City’s Times Square.

One of just three left, USS Arizona survivor recalls attack on Pearl Harbor

Looking for a job and a future, Ken Potts saw little hope in central Illinois.

Born and raised in tiny Honey Bend, Potts—like other teens on the brink of manhood—found few career opportunities as the Great Depression continued to squeeze America.

So, when he turned 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

The move seemed sensible: not only did the service mean steady work, but the United States seemed unwilling to poke its nose into growing political unrest in Europe.

Potts found his naval assignment to his liking, as a coxswain stationed aboard the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, amid sunny skies and a picturesque ocean.

But, that serenity—as well as the Arizona—suddenly exploded the morning of Dec. 7, 1941. The Japanese sneak attack took 2,403 American lives, nearly half of them—1,177 sailors and Marines—aboard the Arizona, which sunk after a cataclysmic bombing.

Amid the greatest loss of life ever aboard a U.S. warship, just 335 from the Arizona survived, including Potts. Now 98, he is one of only three remaining survivors of the warship. When Potts thinks back to the world-shaking chaos, confusion and clamor—as well as the men he helped save and the bodies he recovered—he remains amazed at how the quickly and brutally hellfire rained down on that terrible morning.

“It was unbelievable how it could happen,” Potts says. “It was turmoil.”

one-room schoolhouse, a post office and a general store. For the first 12 years of Potts’ life, his home had no electricity or indoor plumbing. But he remains wistful about a slice of yesteryear that, despite tough times, seemed a lot simpler.

“It’s a different world today, buddy,” Potts says. “There are a lot of things that are nicer now. But (life back then) was more honest. It was a nicer place to live.”

The schoolhouse offered classes through eighth grade. To attend high school, teens had to commute on foot to Litchfield. Potts declined.

“Hell, I’d would’ve had to walk 14 miles a day,” he says.

But dropping out meant he had to find a job, which were scarce not just in central Illinois but across the country. Many bread-winners went to great lengths to support a family: Potts’ father worked for a radiator company in Springfield, where he would live in a cheap apartment weekdays and hitchhike back and forth to home on weekends.

Potts considered farming, but the pay was a 50 cents a day, or $9 in today’s dollars. For a while at age 17, he worked a Civilian Conservation Corps project near Congerville, more than 100 miles from home. But all the while, like many other young men, he eyed the only reliable employer: the service.

A military tour or two seemed safe enough, Potts says. Though winds of war were blowing in Europe, America seemed intent on isolationism.

Besides, foreign news and politics rarely grabbed the attention of Potts and his pals.

“We weren’t concerned about the war,” he says. “Back in Honey Bend, we didn’t give a damn. No TV, no radio—we didn’t know what was going on.”

radio man sent out a Morse-code bulletin: “AIR RAID ON PEARL HARBOR X THIS IS NOT A DRILL.” The first of a swarm of Japanese warplanes, eventually more than 350 in two waves, descended on Pearl Harbor. Explosions roared as bombs and torpedoes dropped from the sky while machine-gun fire strafed ships, with U.S. air-raid sirens screeching throughout the harbor.

Amid the tumult, the crew atop the Arizona scrambled to fire anti-aircraft guns. Meantime, one, two, three bombs struck and stunned the ship, rendering return fire minimal and ineffective.

“We were just dead in the water,” Potts says. *** On Battleship Row, Japanese torPotts was born in Honey Bend, pedo planes blew holes in the Nevaa hamlet about 40 miles south of da, Utah, California, Maryland, West Springfield. The town consisted of Virginia and Oklahoma, the latter of about a dozen modest dwellings, a which quickly listed toward one side.

As warship fuel poured into the harbor, an inferno erupted.

“The whole place as on fire,” Potts says. “The water was burning because the oil was on fire.”

About 8:09 a.m., 14 minutes into the attack, a fourth bomb hit the Arizona, with devastating finality.

Dropped from a high-altitude plane, the armor-piercing bomb blasted through the forward deck, igniting a million pounds of gunpowder and sparking a massive fireball shooting flames 500 feet high.

“When it blew up, people say, it lifted up the Arizona,” Potts says.

By some accounts, the massive ship jumped up as much as 20 feet.

Minutes later and mortally wounded, the Arizona began to sink. Below deck, multitudes of sailors and Marines were trapped, accounting for most of the ship’s 1,177 fatalities.

So when Potts turned 18 in 1939, he joined the Navy. In December 1939—three months after Germany invaded Poland, triggering war in Europe—he sailed from San Pedro, Calif., aboard the USS Arizona, bound for Pearl Harbor. By 1941 at Pearl Harbor, he had been assigned as a crane operator on the Arizona.

“Anything that went onto that ship or came off, I had something to do with,” he says.

Potts spent Dec. 5 and 6 on liberty in nearby Honolulu. He headed back the morning of Dec. 7 during the 7 o’clock hour, returning to the ship with a load of fruit and expecting a quiet Sunday.

“That,” he says with a sigh, “was a hell of a job.” *** After the clamor at Pearl Harbor subsided, Potts was assigned to the port director’s office. He delivered classified information to captains of ships, a job he held until he was discharged at the war’s end, in 1945.

Back in the States, he worked for a while in Decatur as a carpenter.

Eventually, seeking new surroundings, he headed West. He’d heard Utah offered plenty of jobs, so he stopped there and caught on as a car salesman. He settled in Provo, where he and wife Doris have lived in the same house for 54 years.

The Arizona remains sunken in Pearl Harbor, the final resting place for more than 1,100 of its crew. The USS Arizona Memorial straddles above the sunken hull of the battleship. Reunions of shipmates have grown tiny: two survivors died in the summer, leaving Potts just one of three remaining. Though he has visited the site on previous Dec. 7 anniversaries, leg trouble will keep him home this year.

He otherwise is in good health, and recently renewed his driver’s license. He muses about making a long road trip next spring to visit his hometown. Over the decades, Honey Bend has become even smaller.

Though a campground there is popular, the community consists of just a few houses and no commerce. Potts has not been back there in decades, but he’d like to take a glimpse come spring.

“If my legs get better by then,” he says with a chuckle, “I’m going to get back there.”

York girls bowling team takes fourth at Plainfield Central Santucci finishes fourth individually; Freshman Bolden 14th

York girls bowling coach Katie Schroeder said it took her team until the third or fourth week of the season to roll its first 1,000-plus game.

This year, the 1,000 came way earlier for the Dukes, who recently took fourth at the Plainfield Central Wildcat Invitational. York finished with 5,577 pins, which included a 1,078 showing in its third game of the day.

The Dukes shot 978 in the sixth and final game.

Junior Holly Santucci led the way for York, finishing fourth at 1,221.

She had a high game of 245. Freshman JJ Bolden took 14th with a 1,159, which included high games of 247, 216 and 201. She ended the day with a 597 series.

Senior Rose Klinger was 16th at 1,140, which included a pair of 227 high games. She shot a 602 series to start the day.

Senior Caroline Collins was 27th at 1,060 with high games of 226 and 210, while senior Lauren Rickenbrode was at 997 with a high game of 190.

York is coming off a 2018-2019 season where it went 6-2 and took third in the West Suburban Conference.

Santucci, Klinger and Rickenbrode are returning all-WSC bowlers. In addition to Collins, senior Khloe Lesus also is back.

On the newcomer front, Turnbull is excited about Bolden’s prospects.

“JJ has been bowling for many years and comes to us with great experience and knowledge of her game,” she said. “She does a great job picking up her spares. In the afternoon at Plainfield Central, she did not leave a single frame open.”

One thing York does not lack this season is experience. “Having only graduated two seniors, the rest of the varsity team is back and ready to keep building,” Turnbull noted.

“Plus, we have five or six additional sophomores, juniors and seniors, who, aside from our starting lineup, are right on the edge when it comes to vying for a varsity position. We

have never had that kind of depth before. I think it is only going to help as the girls push each other and get better each week.”

Turnbull said the thing she likes most about this group is their competitiveness. “In the past some teams have had a tendency to get nervous or ‘star struck’ when up against the top teams in the state,” she said.

“This team knows that they can bowl just as well as anyone and go after it in competitions.”

But consistency will be a key for the Dukes this winter. “The more consistent we are at making good shots and making the same shot each time, the better we will get at making adjustments that will keep our competitive edge throughout a six-game

tournament,” Turnbull said.

“This is a big foal for us that we already are working on every day in practice.

“Overall, I am very excited about this season. There always are ways to improve and grow each week and each day we are in the alley, but I don’t see a limit on what this team can accomplish this year.”

Timothy Christian girls basketball team kicks off conference with two wins Trojans look to keep momentum going this week against Westmont and Guerin

It was good news across the board for the Timothy Christian girls basketball team as it started Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play.

The Trojans got off to a 2-0 start in MSC Red play with wins against Chicago Christian and Elmwood Park.

In a 45-26 win over Chicago Christian, Timothy led 12-6 after the first

quarter and extended the lead to 2413 at halftime. The Trojans also outscored Chicago Christian 17-5 in the fourth quarter.

Sureya Alex led the Trojans with 12 points. Hannah Schuringa finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Sarah Carstensen had two 3-pointers and five steals. Freshman Maddie Drye, Alex and Schuringa each had three steals.

“We held Chicago Christian to 26 points defensively,” said Timothy coach Jill Groenewold. “We did a nice job stopping their leading scorer. We put a lot of pressure on them and forced a lot of errors on their part.

We had a big height advantage. They

were down to six kids because of injuries and sickness. We pushed the tempo and tired them out.”

Timothy followed that up with a 44-14 MSC Red win against Elmwood Park in the Trojans’ home opener. Timothy led 17-2 and held Elmwood Park to a hoop in the first half, taking a 28-2 lead into intermission.

Alex led the way with 16 points on the strength of 6-for-9 shooting. She was 4-for-5 from the 3-point line.

Freshman Grace Roland added six points. Greta Hoogstra had five rebounds, while Carstensen had four assists, four steals and three blocks.

Schuringa blocked five shots, helping Timothy get to the 12-block plateau.

“We came out ready to play,” said Groenewold. “This was our first home game and it was important to the kids to play well. We focused on putting pressure right away and that turned into instant offense for us. We got a good lead and we never let up.”

The two wins put Timothy at 4-3 overall and 2-0 in MSC Red play.

“Since the tournament (at Hinsdale South), we have played really well,” said Groenewold. “We learned a lot coming out of that tournament. We need to be ready to play and focused.

We learned a lot of good things and that’s what tournaments do. They help you learn.”

Groenewold also is encouraged by having a full-strength roster. “We’re also healthy,” she said. “We had struggled with volleyball going late and then getting everybody back.

We had a couple kids injured, so to be healthy now it helps with rotations and getting girls in and out.”

Timothy plays road MSC Red contests this week against Westmont and Guerin Prep.

“It’s kind of flowed that way with a lot of away games,” said Groenewold. “Toward the end of the season it will be nice to be at home.”

Experience on the side of IC Catholic Prep wrestling team Barney, Scott headline list of Knight returners

IC Catholic Prep wrestling coach Kevin Sliva is seeing a shifting of the tide with his program.

“The average years of experience is much higher than any other season at the school,” he pointed out. “We have really only had one wrestler, former two-time state-champion Joey Bianchini, who had wrestled prior to high school, and that includes the 2017-2018 regional, sectional and state-qualifying team. So even though we are young, these kids are much more experienced, mature and skilled than we have ever had.

The future looks bright and exciting, but we still have much to prove.”

IC Catholic Prep went 7-15 overall a year ago and took seventh in the Metro Suburban Conference tournament.

Back are senior Joseph Scott III (182-195 pounds) and junior Finn Barney (120-126). Both are two-time sectional qualifiers.

The list of key newcomers for the Knights is long. Sophomore Brandon Navarro (160-170) is ranked No. 5 by IWCOA. He went 32-12 as a freshman at Fenwick in Oak Park and qualified for the Class 2A state meet. He is an Illinois national team member and was a runner-up in the Cadet Greco-Roman FloNationals in April.

Sophomore Nicholas Renteria, who wrestles at 120-126, is ranked in the honorable-mention category. He went 22-4 as a freshman at St. Laurence in Burbank and placed fourth in the IWCOA frosh-soph state tournament this past March.

Jadon Mims, a sophomore 220-pounder, went 26-6 as a freshman at Proviso West and also qualified for last season’s frosh-soph state tournament.

Other newcomers include freshmen Saul Trejo (106), Michael DiBenedetto (113), Skander Tahri (152) and Isaiah Gonzalez (285).

Gonzalez was an Illinois national team member over the summer.

“Overall, the guys have continued to develop their own unique style,” Sliva said. “This is the most experienced team we have had compared to the past. The sky is the limit for all of them.”

Sliva said a key to the season will be to remain healthy and injury-free, “and continuing to develop and grow,” he said.

IC Catholic Prep has ramped up its schedule as well. “We have put together arguably one of the toughest calendars of any other Class 1A school,” Sliva noted. “We have many duals against larger Class 3A and 2A programs.”

The Knights will wrestle four-time state-champion Washington High School outside Peoria in January, along with nationally ranked Class 3A program Chicago Mt. Carmel, as well as state-ranked Moline.

against Class 2A No. 1 Marian Central Catholic. Two-time state trophy winner Aurora Christian is in the Knights’ conference.

The Knights will be in the prestigious Dvorak tournament for the third year in a row, which Sliva noted has returned to being the best tournament in the Midwest.

The Knights also are in the Abe’s Rumble tournament, which now has 60 teams and is the largest in-season dual team tournament in the coun-

try.

“Our kids have plenty of opportunities to learn and grow into champions,” Sliva said.

In the Metro Suburban, Sliva noted Fenton has departed the conference.

“That removes a tough competitor who has been consistently ranked in the top 20 in Class 2A and is a very well-coached team that we have a lot of respect for. It’s said to see them go,” he said. “Aurora Christian is the top dog. Riverside-Brookfield

is a consistent mainstay at the top with St. Francis, Wheaton Academy, newcomer Westmont, Bishop McNamara and Elmwood Park not too far behind.”

IC Catholic Prep opened the season at the Willowbrook quad. The Knights beat Class 2A team state qualifier Chicago Noble-Comer 4824, lost to Willowbrook 50-31 and to Hinsdale Central 51-20.

Navarro, Gonzalez and DiBenedetto went 3-0 on the day. Trejo and Scott III finished 2-1.

Off the mat, a group of IC Catholic Prep wrestlers, who are members of the local Titan 2028 Wrestling Club, which is a USA Wrestling-chartered program, received a unique invite from the club to attend a trip to Col-

orado Springs.

At the end of September, the group traveled from Elmhurst to Colorado for a trip that included a ropes course in the Rocky Mountains, visiting the Air Force Academy and the Air Force Regional Training Center for wrestling, attending an Air Force football game, staying on the Olympic Training Center campus and training in the Olympic wrestling room, and hiking the Manitou Incline.

Sliva noted the group learned, bonded and absorbed knowledge from talks given by the Air Force head wrestling coach and the head Olympic wrestling coach. “It was an amazing journey these young wrestlers will remember forever,” Sliva said.

York boys basketball team continues hot start with pair of wins Dukes girls basketball team piles on 3-pointers

After a strong showing at the Palatine Thanksgiving tournament, the York boys basketball team continued that momentum with a pair of recent wins.

The Dukes opened West Suburban Conference Silver Division action with a 51-41 overtime win against Lyons Township.

York’s Nate Shockey hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. The game was tied 39-39 after four quarters.

Shockey led the Dukes with 26

points and 10 rebounds. Jeff Grace went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line to finish off the game in overtime.

Denton Rohde added eight points.

York then scored a 38-22 non-conference win against Naperville North. Sophomore Nick Hesch led the way with 12 points, while Shockey had 11 points.

York led 13-0 out of the gates. “We jumped out to a great start,” Dukes coach Vince Doran noted.

The two wins pushed York to 5-1 overall.

The Dukes head to Glen Ellyn Friday to face Glenbard West in a WSC Silver game before returning home Saturday to play Benet Academy.

The York hockey team continued its mastery of opponents by winning the recent 14-team Stevenson tournament.

York went a perfect 6-0 in the event that was split between Rinkside at Gurnee Mills in Gurnee and Twin Rinks in Buffalo Grove.

The Dukes opened the tournament with a 7-1 win over Deerfield and followed that up with a 3-2 triumph over the Chargers travel team based out of Hoffman Estates. Both games were held at Gurnee Mills.

York then defeated the Glenbard team 5-0 and upended the DuPage Stars 3-1 at Gurnee Mills.

In the semifinals, York pounded the

Rock County Raptors 9-0 before vanquishing host Stevenson 5-0 in the finale in Buffalo Grove.

The six wins moved the York JV to 34-0-2-2, which includes two overtime losses and a pair of ties. York has not lost a game in regulation this season.

“The team played awesome,” York JV coach Matt Boeing said.

In the Rock County game, Boeing credited the tandem of Mike Iorii (forward) and Mike Anderson, a freshman forward, for helping steer York to victory.

“We had a rough first period against Rock County,” Boeing said. “Give an assist to captain Mike Iorii and freshman Mike Anderson. They used a lot of encouraging words to get the guys hyped up.”

Goalie Ben Foley recorded the shutout.

“Ben Foley played unbelievable,” Boeing said. “The kids have done a great job of breaking the puck out of the zone, buying into our systems, fol-

lowing their rebounds and scoring on the rebounds.”

York encountered rival Stevenson in the championship game. “Stevenson is another great opponent,” Boeing said.

“We always go back and forth with them. It’s always going to be a great game against them. We had our eyes on the prize. We know they are one of our rivals. We don’t have to give a pregame speech when we play Stevenson.

We know we are in for a battle and a grind. Our kids wanted to win more and wanted to play for the person next to them. In the long run, we came out on top.”

Freshman forward Charlie Nahumyk scored seven goals in the six games. “Charlie played unreal throughout the tournament,” Boeing said.

“The MVP would have to be Charlie with him scoring seven goals. I also have to mention our goalies Ben Foley and Jack Maier both played unbelievably well.”

The York line of Iorii, Owen Stasica and Nahumyk excelled. “They were probably our best line throughout the tournament,” Boeing noted.

Boeing added York’s defensive unit was up to snuff as well. “Huge shout outs to our defense,” he said. “Sophomore defenseman and captain Brendan Quinn is a shutdown defenseman,” Boeing said. “He absolutely rushes the puck.”

Jonathan Wood provided a spark for York against Stevenson with the team’s first of five goals. “Jonathan started the scoring and then the game started to shift our way,” the coach remarked.

The fact York had no regulation losses through 38 games was not lost on Boeing.

“It’s a record-breaking season,” he said. “Last year was a record season as well. I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves yet here, but this is the best record a York team has ever had.”

The Dukes recently participated in a special Toys for Tots game with Bar-

rington High School. “Hats off to Deb Oberling, one of our hockey moms for putting the whole night together,” Boeing said. “It nice that we are able to collect toys for less fortunate kids.

Our community has given us so much, we want to give back any way we can.”

Boeing also noted the team has been bolstered by the efforts of Cheri Stasica, who played a major role in the team’s cancer awareness night last month.

“We raised thousands for cancer research because of Cheri’s hard work,” Boeing said.

York is taking the Christmas holiday off and will gear up for a tournament at Notre Dame in mid-January.

“And then we have to get ready for the league and state playoffs,” Boeing said. “This is a special team. They discipline themselves. They run their own team. They want to be here and they want to make each other better. Those are qualities we are fortunate to have and it makes our jobs easy.”

Electric Baseball’s very own Mason Balfanz has been selected to represent Game Day USA in the Disney New Year’s All American Classic, Dec. 27 through Jan. 1 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. Mason was hand picked from the 2019 New Lenox All-Star Weekend for this event, where he and his teammates brought home the High School Division Tournament Championship among other prestigious awards at the event. Airborne 6th grade girls are Shoot Out champions

On Saturday, Nov. 23, the Elmhurst Airborne 6th grade girls traveled to Wheaton Academy for one of the largest one day tournaments of the year. The Airborne girls faced three of the top teams, winning all three of them sailing through to the championship defeating the Illinois Icons 19-10 in the championship game. The Airborne team faced opponents such as the West Suburban Dream, M14 Hoops and the Illinois Icons. Spend an enchanted evening at Mayslake Hall discovering fantastic creatures and the magic of nature at “Wizards, Wands and Wildlife” 6 – 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, and 3 – 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, at Mayslake

Peabody Estate at 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook.

Witch and wizard families will be welcomed in the great hall where they will meet their teachers, take magical photos, and receive wands

to prepare for the evening ahead. As the magical courses begin, participants will learn about nocturnal creatures, insect transformations, and the ways wildlife find food. They’ll even solve mysteries by investigating real

animal bones.

Participants are invited to dress in their favorite magical attire for the evening. Free refreshments will be available, and participants can purchase their own stuffed cuddly crea-

tures at the gift shop. The program costs $15 per person and is for ages 8 and up; under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
