While facing prison time, former state senator dies from COVID-19 complications

Former Democratic State Sen. Martin Sandoval died Saturday, Dec. 5, from COVID-19 complications, according to his criminal defense attorney Dylan Smith. Sandoval was 56. Sandoval had been facing prison time after pleading guilty to taking bribes from the red-light camera company SafeSpeed. Smith said he spoke with Sandoval’s family and learned the once-powerful Illinois politician had died after contracting the novel coronavirus. Smith said Sandoval, “cared deeply about his community and he did a great deal of good
... Although he had made mistakes, he took responsibility for them and was sincerely remorseful.” Sandoval pleaded guilty to corruption charges and was helping authorities to reveal more wrongdoing. He admitted to bribery and tax evasion charges in federal court last January, acknowledging he illegally pocketed more than $250,000 and abused his power as a state lawmaker on behalf of a redlight-camera company. Just last month, federal investigators wrote in a court filing that Sandoval “has provided valuable cooperation that is expected to last

City and Santa plan Holiday Parade through town The route is within a quarter mile walk from most any home in Elmhurst and will traverse many open public parking lots. Feel free to take a walk to the route or find a public parking lot on the route to watch the holiday parade from your vehicle. Please remember to practice proper social distancing and safety measures. Stand at least 6 feet apart from one another and wear face masks. According to a release from the City of Elmhurst, Santa Claus and his holiday friends are coming to your neighborhood on Thursday, Dec. 17 ( or Friday, Dec. 18 rain date). Santa has asked to use City vehicles to bring you the joy of the holiday season safely and close to your home. The route will cover 16 miles of Elmhurst with vehicles passing through each Ward, beginning at 4 p.m. Santa and his friends will not be stopping or getting out of vehicles. This is a short parade with approximately 10 city vehicles. If your home is on the route, please consider parking your car at the end of your driveway. You can turn your flashers on and wave as the parade goes by.
