Free Veterans Day Tribute Concert at Elmhurst College

On Sunday, Nov. 11, the Elmhurst College Wind Ensemble and American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 join together to present a Veterans Day Tribute for the Elmhurst community. This tribute concert is a part of a larger effort to help increase community engagement and general awareness of our veterans and their service to our country.

The tribute will be held at 12 noon in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the Elmhurst College Campus.

Oct. 25 Alexis Walker, 25, of Aurora, was charged with battery in the 800 block of N. York at around 1:08 p.m. Police said the victim and Walker had an altercation at the above location where Walker approached the victim and pulled the victim’s hair.

Criminal damage

Oct. 29 Anthony Trykoski, 27, of Carol Stream, was charged with criminal damage to a vehicle in the 600 block of W. North at around 8:07 p.m.

Police said officers responded after Trykoski stated the victim struck him with her vehicle at the above location. The victim stated she did not strike Trykoski. She stated he allegedly jumped on her vehicle, ripped off a windshield wiper and scratched her windshield with it.

Oct. 25-Oct. 29 A complainant—the owner of a company in the 400 block of N. Oak—told police that an unknown suspect(s) had punctured two tires on a trailer he had parked at the above location over the weekend.

Disorderly conduct

Oct. 26 Faustino Garcilazo, 54, of Chicago, was issued citations for disorderly conduct-public intoxication, and open alcohol in public in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 4:14 p.m.

Oct. 25 Colette Keri, 22, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-befouling property in the 300 block of Sunnyside at around 5:37 p.m. A victim told police he saw Keri allegedly leave an item on the front step of his house. The victim opened the item and found it to be a hat containing what appeared to be vomit, according to police.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Oct. 29 A complainant in 1 Elm Creek Drive told police at around 11:27 a.m. that the suspect, who is not a resident at the complex, has had numerous verbal altercations with residents when visiting his girlfriend. While conducting a LEADS check on suspect’s girlfriend, she was found to have an active order of protection which had not been served. The suspect was served with a no trespass notice while the suspect’s girlfriend was served with the order of protection.

Oct. 27 Christian X. Cannady, 27, of Danville, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 12:56 a.m.

Oct. 26 Maria J. Leca, 27, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, speeding and driving without lights when required subsequent to a traffic stop near Palmer and Schiller at around 11 p.m.

Fleeing, eluding

Oct. 29 Police said that subsequent to an attempted traffic stop for failure to wear a seat belt near West and Third at around 12:24 a.m., the vehicle failed to yield for the squad car’s emergency lights and siren and fled at a high rate of speed, disobeying numerous traffic control devices. The vehicle circled the residential areas of Elmhurst for more than 30 minutes, before leaving town, eastbound on Butterfield Road into Hillside. The Hillside and Berkeley police departments attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but it fled from them as well. It was last seen northbound on Taft Avenue from Butterfield Road.

Harassment, threats

Oct. 30 A victim in the 400 block of Washington told police at around 5;36 p.m. that he has received numerous harassing phone calls from what he believes to be a phone center, telling him that the IRS has outstanding warrants for him and that he needs to provide personal information to them.

Oct. 29 A victim in the 300 block of S. Sunnyside told police at around 12:34 p.m. that a suspect hacked her social media accounts and signed her up on multiple web sites. An investigation is pending.

Sept. 27-Oct. 25 A victim in the 600 block of S. Hillside told

Oct. 31 Pamela Turner, 55, of Chicago, was charged with obstructing at Elmhurst Hospital at around 12:40 a.m. Police said officers responded to the report of Turner refusing to leave. Upon arrival, Turner was located. Hospital security reports, Turner was attempting to sleep in a hospital room and had previously been asked to leave, according to police. Police said Turner gave the reporting officer false names.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Nov. 1 Shanell D. Medina Hipolite, 20, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Willow at around 2:20 a.m.

Oct. 31 Police said two juvenile suspects at York High School were located at around 9:51 a.m. in a bathroom using electronic cigarettes. Juvenile 1 was cited for possession of an alternative nicotine device. Juvenile 2 was in possession of multiple vaporizers and admitted to possessing a cartridge with a label indicating it contained THC oil. The second juvenile was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Oct. 30 Insung Cho, 46, of Palatine was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license revoked, obstructing identification, use of a false insurance card, defective windshield and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 2:59 p.m.

Police said officers conducted a traffic stop on the listed vehicle after recognizing Cho as having a warrant for his arrest. According to police, Cho provided a false name and date of birth and was placed under arrest. A search of the vehicle prior to towing yielded suspect cocaine, according to police. The driver had three active warrants for his arrest, police said.

Tyrone Harris, 22, of Glendale Heights; Derrick D. Mayfield, 23, of Chicago; Graham P. Pedersen, 19, of Franklin Park; and Miquan Walker, 22, of Chicago, were issued citations for possession of cannabis at Elmhurst College at 7:04 p.m.

Oct. 28 China London, 19, of Chiccago, was charged with possession of cannabis, no valid driver’s license, no headlights when required and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Fair at around 3:42 a.m.

Oct. 27 Jonathan Camacho, 21, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia, and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Indiana at around 3:54 a.m.

Jeremy A. Lowe, 26, of Melrose Park, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal transportation of alcohol, driving while license suspended, no seat belt and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Elm at around 2:16 a.m. Police said that during a search of the vehicle, the suspect was found to be in possession of a digital scale with suspected cocaine on it and an opened water bottle containing suspected alcohol.

Oct. 26 Vincente Garcia, 58, of Chiccago, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis near North and Indiana at around 4:14 p.m.

Margaret Schmidt, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, operating a vehicle while using an electronic communication device and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop in the 700 block of N. York at around 5:23 p.m.

Oct. 25 Andrew Cubon, 24, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Clinton at around 6:33 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances

Oct. 28 A victim in the 200 block of S. Route 83 told police at around 5:26 p.m. that when she walked out of a store at the above location, she noticed a dark blue SUV drive past her in front of the store. The victim walked to her vehicle and the same dark blue SUV parked next to her vehicle. The driver of the SUV, described as a male Indian, medium length beard, mid 30s, wearing a black stocking hat and a blue puffy vest, was leaning over to the passenger side window, attempting to make eye contact with the victim. When the victim looked over, she observed the man masturbating. The victim drove away and did not get a license plate number.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Aug. 2-Oct. 27 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of N. Pine. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) opened a Verizon Wireless account using her maiden name and current address. The victim received several letters from Verizon about a balance due, and the cell phone line was being suspended.

Oct. 26 Robin Smith, 53, of Chicago, was charge with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, burglary and retail theft at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 8:21 a.m. Police said an officer responded to the report of a retail theft, where Smith stole a shopping cart of alcohol. Smith was located and admitted to stealing 25 bottles of liquor, according to police. While searching the suspect, police said four small baggies, four straws and two glass smoking pipes were located; they contained a white powder, suspected to be cocaine.

Best-friend doctors follow their dreams Elmhurst resident joins associate to open medical practice in south Loop

Best friends since 2001, Drs. Gameli Dekayie and Chantale Stephens-Archer have gone through the University of Chicago together, been roommates and became the first doctors in their respective families.

Now they’re business partners, too, as co-owners of the new South Loop medical practice, Quench Wellness, which recently opened. The practice, located at 1319 S. Michigan Ave., focuses on a variety of services, including IV vitamin infusions, hormone replacement and vaginal laser therapy.

“We respect each other, and we’re accountable to each other, whether it’s been in college, medical school, in relationships or even working out together,” said Dekayie, who is a resident of Hyde Park. “She’s like my accountability partner. That has strengthened our friendship, and it also has helped with our business.”

Dekayie and Stephens-Archer, who lives in Elmhurst, are both examples of the American Dream come true. Dekayie moved to Chicago from Ghana when she was just 5½ years old. The former Park Forest resident and Rich East High School alumna graduated from the University of Chicago before earning her medical degree from Rush University and completing her residency at the University of Chicago. In addition to her work at Quench, Dekayie is a full-time ER physician and Associate Medical Director at Advocate South Suburban Emergency Department in Hazel Crest.

Stephens-Archer, whose mother is from Guyana and father from Barbados, grew up in Ashburn and graduated from Whitney Young Magnet High School before her time at

University of Chicago, followed by medical school and residency training at University of Illinois at Chicago. Stephens-Archer also works full-time as a Hospitalist for DuPage Medical Group and has two daughters – Hailey, 5, and Zuri, 3.

“Part of the reason I started this business was I’m hoping my daughters can see what going after your dreams looks like,” Stephens-Archer said.

Both 35 and born about a month apart, Dekayie and Stephens-Archer, first met in 2001 at a University of Chicago’s summer visitation weekend, when they determined that each would attend the school in the fall.

They were roommates all four years and remained that way for several years after graduation while they were in separate medical schools.

Their commonalities also led them to co-found BestiesMD, a platform that aims to empower women through health education in a relatable and sisterly level.

Quench’s recent debut is the next evolution in their friendship.

“It’s even harder than medical school because there’s no roadmap for being a successful business person, but Gameli and I are going to give it our all,” Stephens-Archer said.

Stephens-Archer said Quench will give her a chance to continue to educate and empower people and give her patients another way of looking at health maintenance and well being.

“I look at medicine and see doctors prescribing pills, and I wanted to do something different,” Stephens-Archer said. “This business is a passion project and the more I do it, the more

It was discovered that the prescription was indeed fraudulent and advised the pharmacy. The victim reviewed a database and discovered additional fraudulent prescriptions were written using his credentials.

Aug. 20-Oct. 24 Theft of services was reported in the 700 block of N. Church. A victim told police that his legal services were retained by the suspect for a criminal case.

The suspect agreed to the legal fees and made three payments to the victim using a Visa credit card. On Oct. 24, date the victim received three separate Visa chargebacks associated with charges made on the credit card used by the suspect to pay her legal fees. Contact is to be made with the suspect.

Warrant arrest

Oct. 31 Police said that subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious person in the 900 block of S. Mitchell at around 7:53 a.m., Tomasz Kolodziejczyk, 40, of Chicago, was found to have a warrant from the Rosemont Police Department. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the police station.

Police said Rouse Vega, 38, of Chicago, came into the police station to turn herself in on a valid warrant out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office at around 8:30 p.m.

Oct. 25 Police said Christopher C. Berger, 27, of Northlake, was found to have a valid warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office subsequent to a traffic stop near York and I-290 at around 9:55 a.m. Berger also was issued a citation for speeding.

Police said Bridget N. Manolis, 37, of Elmhurst, had a warrant from the Lyons Police Department in the 700 block of S. Fairview at around 8:24 p.m.

Police report two cases of alleged battery at York High School On Oct. 26 at around 9:17 a.m., police said officers were advised of a battery that had just occurred at York High School involving two students. The officers spoke with the suspect who admitted to fighting with the victim in a second-floor hallway. The victim related she was outside of her classroom when the suspect allegedly grabbed her hair and punched her. The suspect was issued citations for battery and possession of drug paraphernalia and was released to a parent.

Also on Oct. 26 at around 3:10 p.m., Wynonna Rodriguez, 18, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for battery at York High School. Police said Rodriguez admitted to pushing and then punching a victim. It is unknown if the two incidents are related.

Slices of life

So much for avoiding muddy messes My kids give me gifts, often without even knowing it. This weekend I received a pair, or actually it was a pair of pairs.

Pants, that is. Two pairs, which totaled a pair.

To further play with words, the pants were paired with a request.

It was one of the most simple, albeit complex, requests I’ve ever received: Can you clean these?

Of course I can clean them! It’s one of the things moms do best.

We clean things.

(Because no one else has the ability to detect they are dirty.)

Except detection of dirt wouldn’t be the problem here.

These once-white football pants were covered in ground-in dirt of the dried-on mud variety. Brown and crusty. From top to bottom they were covered (covered!) in splashes and splotches of grime that even my 16-year-old son could not ignore.

It must have been quite a messy, rainy, mud-laden game. But I like a challenge.

I got right to work. I started with a pre-treatment. Any laundry pro knows pre-treatments are key to unsoiled success.

I ran the washer on the deep clean, deep water cycle. Hot. And I waited.

Here are some little known facts about ground-in dirt. Groundin sounds permanent because it basically is.

When something is ground-in it has permeated the fibers of the fabric and must be extracted with force.

Apparently my washing machine did not possess such force because the pants came out of the cycle with 87 percent of the mud splotches intact.

I was just getting started.

I carried the pants to the kitchen sink and attacked the spots individually – with a toothbrush and dish soap. I use toothbrushes for cleaning more than just teeth.

But not the same one for both purposes.

Teeth toothbrushes are not laundry toothbrushes and vice versa.

The same goes for toilet toothbrushes, which are unitaskers for sure.

I thought it best to clear that subject up earlier rather than later.

Back to the pair of pair of pants: I scrubbed until my fingers were puckered and raw, but little by little the dirt succumbed to my efforts and slowly the pants became less brown and nearer to their original white state.

Who scrubs their kid’s pants with a toothbrush, you might ask.

Good question, I might answer. A parent who doesn’t want their kid to be the only one on the field with brown pants, that’s who.

Mud can make us look messy.

It is messy and we don’t really want people all up in our messes.

Messes should be private or at least invisible. So we scrub, sometimes with a toothbrush to get things looking white again. We do whatever we can to remove the mud stains from our pants and our lives.

Because mud can creep into places where we least want it.

Lots of things can be muddy.

Boots. Puddles. Springtime. The back entryway. Water. The truth.

Relationships. Life. Even football pants.

Some people immerse themselves in mud by choice.

Some even run in it on the football field.

My son was scheduled to do just that the very next day. That morning – in a triumphant mom moment – I presented him with the both pair of clean pants.

“Oh, I don’t need those today,” he said. “They’re just my practice pants. I have clean ones for the game.”

So much for avoiding muddy messes.

Be a part of the bucket brigade: flood the world with goodness, hope

With so much negativity on social media, and of course, so much press on the tragedies occurring daily, I simply cannot be another voice in that space. What is left to be said or to decry, or simply cry? I am here to remind us that there are MORE people doing good in the world than those who do not. There is more kindness and compassion and caring in the world than hate. Let us shift our focus, if even for a brief few seconds, to love and to lightness.

If you come to my Facebook page and see a silly joke or a bad pun and groan or roll your eyes, you are exhaling out with that groan and taking in a new lungful of good light air. For that blink of time, you are in the present moment. Take that glimmer of something light into your day. Read others who speak of only the goodness in our world. Fill yourself with a balanced report. Find the good. It exists as surely as the pain.

Then when you read or hear about another tragedy, do not be filled with despair and hopelessness. Instead be buoyed by the good stuff you have filled your cup with. Drink in strength, courage, kindness, compassion, love.

Do not jump in the pit of fear.

Do not jump on the bandwagon of

Glenbard East student charged with threatening school held for $75,000 bond DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced last week that an 18-year-old male Glenbard East student has been charged with posting a threat on Instagram directed at his school. Jairus Castillo, 18, of Glendale Heights, appeared in Bond Court where Judge Brian Jacobs set bond at $75,000 with 10% to apply.

On Oct. 20, 2018, Lombard police received information regarding a threatening Instagram Jairus Castillo post in which a male, not Castillo, was seen holding an AR-15 style rifle accompanied with the words “He’s shooting up the school Monday 3rd period after the bell.” An investigation conducted by the Lombard Police Department led to Castillo as the person who allegedly made the post. He was taken into custody the following day without incident.

“Threatening the safety and security of thousands of teachers, staff and students is not a joke,” Berlin said. “Any threat to the well-being of our students and teachers will be fully investigated and anyone suspected of such behavior will be charged accordingly.

Former School District 4 employee charged with stealing credit card points

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced last week that a Naperville woman had been charged with stealing more than $11,000 worth of My Bank…My Rewards credit card points from her former employer, Addison School District #4.

On Oct. 25, 2018, Judge Joseph Bugos issued a $10,000 with 10% to apply arrest warrant for Marcia L. Boyan, 50, of Naperville. On the afternoon of Oct. 31, Boyan turned herself in to authorities, posted the necessary $1,000 and was released from custody.

From February 2016 through April 2017, Boyan was employed by Addison School District #4, when it is alleged that Boyan stole more than 900,000 My Bank…My Rewards credit card points earned on Addison School District #4 credit cards.

It is alleged that Boyan took the My Bank…My Rewards credit card points for personal use without authorization from the school district.

“Through her alleged actions, Mrs. Boyan abused the trust placed in her

York Hockey Club to host Spirit Night On Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m., the York High School Hockey Club will present Friday Night Ice’s Annual Spirit Night at York’s home ice at the Addison Ice Arena, 475 So. Grace, Addison.

State Board of Education Library receives five-star status from school report cards released national review board CUSD 205 schools named ‘Commendable’ Of 21 facilities in state, Elmhurst is among three to earn five stars

For the second year in a row, Elmhurst Public Library received a five-star rating in Library Journal’s annual national review of public libraries. Each year, the Library Journal’s Star Library Ratings and the Index of Public Library Services spotlight the “Best of the Best across America.” This is the ninth consecutive year EPL secured a star rating.

A total of 7,361 public libraries were rated nationwide and only 257 qualified as star libraries. In Illinois, 21 libraries received star ratings, but only three earned the distinction of receiving a five-star rating: Elmhurst Public Library, Skokie Public Library, and Oak Park Public Library.

“Providing resources, services, and amenities that best reflect the needs and values of our community is our priority,” said Library Executive Director Mary Beth Harper. “To be recognized as a five-star Library for the second year in a row is truly an honor.

The strong support we have from the Elmhurst community and the Library Board, coupled with the smart, forward-looking EPL staff is what makes the Library a destination for the entire community to create, connect, and explore.”

The Illinois State Board of Education has released the 2018 school report cards. These report cards are produced every year and provide a variety of information about student and school performance and environment.

This year, report cards also include an overall rating as part of the state accountability system for schools. All Elmhurst CUSD 205 schools received a rating of “Commendable” from the State BOE. The goal of the state’s designation is to identify the schools with the

highest level need to receive additional supports through the IL-EMPOWER school improvement process.

D205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer put the State BOE’s new rating system into context for parents: “The District is adjusting to the new State Report Cards and continued changes in the state testing system,” he said. “We are focusing our efforts internally on supporting our vision of all students graduating college, career, and life ready. As we continue to do so, we believe that

our learners will continue to grow on both standardized measures and in the areas of creativity, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, character and citizenship. These are the skills that students will need to be successful in life, not ‘at school.’ We don’t view this as ‘either-or,’ but rather as ‘both-and,’ and we will continue to work hard to meet the needs of all students.”

Elmhurst resident named Artist of the Month at Montini Catholic Congratulations went out to Montini Catholic junior Jack Hemmersmeier, who is a resident of Elmhurst, for being named Bronco Artist of the Month for October. Jack, a Design I art student, was selected for the honor by art teacher and Fine Arts Department Chair Stephanie Kuecker.

“I have taught Jack for two years now and he has a very strong dedication to his artwork,” said Kuecker. “He is a very reliable student, he comes to work on his projects before

and after school.”

She is very impressed about Jack’s commitment to his craft, saying he often forgoes his lunch period to make touch ups and finish projects.

“He has really grown as a painter,” she added. “During our most recent painting project [Montini Community Painting project], he created a stunning Lacrosse image!” she said.

“I am very proud of Jack’s work inside and outside of the classroom.”

“I started creating significant piec-

es of art after my first art class with Mrs. Lee, freshman year,” said Jack.

“I find creating art very fun and enjoyable.”

He discovered over time that his favorite medium is pencil, graphite and sometimes charcoal. He is intrigued by single light sourced, illuminated images.

“Pencil is a very controlled and

precise process, but also forgiving,” he said. “Shading is significantly different than from ink. I love how the light interactions can be easily manipulated. This matters when shadows and shine are involved.”

One of Jack’s favorite subjects to draw is tanks, warships and armored vehicles. But, he also enjoys drawing people, an undertaking, which he

finds quite challenging.

Jack is a very humble artist, but is proud to have been chosen as Montini’s Artist of the Month.

“Ms. K has inspired me to learn to appreciate my work,” he said.

Jack Hemmersmeier is the son of Daniel & Susan Hemmersmeier and attended Visitation Catholic School in Elmhurst.

Epiphany Players serve comedies to dinner audience

Laughter and chicken were on the menu at a recent performance by the Epiphany Players at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Elmhurst. A cast of 11 performers presented two readers’ theater plays, “Oh, What a Tangled Web” and “Just Desserts,” sandwiched on either side of a dinner attended by more than 30 people.

“Oh, What a Tangled Web” traced how a teenager’s well-intentioned fib merrily spins out of control, while “Just Desserts” told the tale of greedy relatives who await the reading of a wealthy - and wily - patriarch’s will.

“Readers’ Theater is a dramatic presentation of a written work in

which the actors actually read from a script,” said Epiphany Players director Phil Darling, who started the group in 1996. “This type of staging relies solely on vocal expression and gestures. Those of us who grew up glued to the radio listening to those popular soap operas will certainly see a similarity between these two theatrical venues.”

ECU and Orchestra to perform Handel’s Messiah

Elmhurst Choral Union and Orchestra will present Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Guest soloists Angela Presutti, Stacy Eckert, Hoss Brock, and Aaron Wardell join Elmhurst Choral Union and a professional orchestra under conductor Scott Uddenberg for the Christmastime favorite.

The performance includes all of Part One (“The Christmas Section”) and selections from Parts Two and Three (including the popular “Hallelujah Chorus”).

Concert tickets are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors and $10 for youth (7-22). Tickets are available at elmhurstchoralunion.org, 800-838-3006, or at the door.

The concert is funded in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

Berlin named president of Illinois State’s Attorney’s Association The Illinois State’s Attorney’s Association announced today it has named DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin President of the Association. Berlin, who currently serves as the Association’s First Vice-President, assumes this new role following the selection of current Association President John C. Milhiser as Acting U.S. Attorney for the Central District of Illinois.

Begun in the 1930s, the Association is comprised of Bob Berlin State’s Attorneys representing each of Illinois’ 102 counties.

In addition to working closely with the State Appellate Prosecutor’s Office, the Association assists State’s Attorneys throughout Illinois by providing policy guidance, advocating on major issues of concern to State’s Attorney’s Offices such as the crime trends and criminal justice reform as well as proposing and monitoring legislation. The Association also offers Continuing Legal Education courses to Assistant State’s Attorneys throughout the state.

“It is indeed an honor to serve as President of the Illinois State’s Attorney’s Association,” Berlin said. “Over the years, the Association has served as the foundation of the prosecutorial function for Illinois’ 102 State’s Attorneys. Together we provide a unified voice in Springfield in criminal justice matters and in doing so, have accomplished great things for Illinois’ criminal justice system. I look forward to a productive term as President.”

Police Department’s Accreditation Assessment Team seeks public input The Elmhurst Police announce that a team from the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police will arrive at the police department on Nov.12 to examine all aspects of the agency for accreditation through the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP).

The on-site assessment will occur on Monday and Tuesday, Nov.12 and 13, at the Elmhurst Police Department. During the assessment, the department will be judged on 67 separate ILEAP standards including Operations, Training, Personnel, and Administration. As part of the assessment process, members of the community are invited to offer comments to the assessment team by calling (630) 5303204 on Monday, No. 12, between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Comments are limited to 5 minutes and must address the Elmhurst Police Department’s ability to meet the ILEAP standards, which may be viewed online at http://www. ilchiefs.org.

Cantigny Park photo contest deadline is Nov. 14

Cantigny Park invites amateur photographers to enter their best images in the Cantigny in Focus annual photo contest. The submission deadline for entries is Wednesday, November 14.

Submitted images (maximum 10) must be from the grounds of Cantigny Park or Cantigny Golf in Wheaton, the 500-acre former estate of Robert R. McCormick. Pictures taken in 2018 or earlier are eligible.

Cantigny-appointed judges will select 20 images for public display in the park’s Visitors Center Gallery.

Judges look for photographs that best represent the scope of Cantigny, including gardens, museums, special events, festivals, golf, adult and children’s programs, concerts, military events and nature.

The entries chosen for display will be enlarged, professionally framed at Cantigny’s expense and returned to the photographers at the end of 2019.

Top finishers also receive a free annual membership to Cantigny Park.

Winning entries will be on display starting February 1, 2019. Park visitors may then vote for their favorite images through December 29, 2019.

IC Catholic Prep football team shuts out Stillman Valley Knights in state quarterfinals for fourth year in a row

The IC Catholic Prep football team now is two steps away from getting a crack at a three-peat.

The Knights headed west and recorded a 31-0 shutout win against Stillman Valley in a second-round Class 4A state football playoff game.

IC Catholic Prep, which has won two state championships in a row, moved to 11-0 on the season and earned a spot in the state quarterfinals for a fourth year in a row.

IC Catholic Prep hosts Marengo in the state quarterfinals either Friday or Saturday. Check IHSA.org for date and time.

In the win against Stillman Valley, The Knights led 11-0 at halftime and 18-0 after three quarters.

The Knights piled on 13 points in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Khalil Saunders completed four passes for 41 yards and one touchdown.

The Knights also racked up 310 yards on the ground on only 39 carries (7.9 yards per carry). Kyle Franklin ran 18 times for 196 yards and one touchdown (10.9 yards per carry).

Rashad Sbeih ran 11 times for 63 yards and scored two touchdowns, while Saunders ran seven times for 40 yards.

Jacob Lytton caught two passes for 14 yards and a score, while Khali Saunders had two catches for 27 yards.

On defense, Kevin Cooke made 21 total tackles, while Ricky Mysliwiec had 10 tackles. Julian Vega finished with eight tackles. Khali Saunders, Dominick Krepulec and Kevin Akins each had six tackles.

The Knights registered 10 tackles for loss with A.J. Howard, Koby Reed and Akins each having two.

Khalil Saunders, Lytton, Cooke and Mysliwiec each had one tackle for loss. Lytton, Howard and Reed each recovered a fumble, while Khali Saunders caused a fumble.

Lytton had two punt returns for 41 yards and one kickoff return for 11 yards. Khalil Saunders scored a two-point conversion and Joe Sloan kicked a 26-yard field goal.

York boys golf team turns in another stellar performance Dukes win regional title, take second on conference; Mann reflects on season

It was a season filled with plenty of highs for the York boys golf team.

The Dukes won a Class 3A regional title and finished three strokes away at sectionals from qualifying as a team for the Class 3A state finals.

York also finished second in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division and won the Dundee-Crown 24-team Charger Invite tournament.

“We had a good roster from top to bottom,” said York’s Aidan Mann.

“We had a lot of guys we could trust on the team. It wasn’t just one guy.

We had five guys that were there if one guy had a bad day.”

Sophomore Zach Sutter qualified for the Class 3A state finals meet where he tied for 13th place after shooting a 74 in a weather-shortened

format. He shot 77 at the sectional to advance to state.

Through the conference meet, York averaged 154.26 for nine holes and then shot 298 to win the regional title and had a 309 at the sectional.

Individual highlights included Mann shooting a 4-under par 68 to finish tied for first at the conference meet. Josh La Bounty (72) and Sam Bartolone (76) also earned all-WSC Silver honors.

Matt Buckley shot even-par 71 at the Charger Invite. LaBounty shot an even-par 35 for nine to earn medalist honors in a dual meet against Downers Grove South. La Bounty shot 1-under par 71 and Bartolone shot an even-par 72 at the Limestone invitational where York took third out of 22 teams.

York also took fourth out of 20 teams at the Addison Trail invitational, sixth out of 15 teams at the Warren invitational, fourth out of 13 teams at the Hinsdale Central invitational and ninth out of 21 teams at the Batavia invitational.

Mann was at 39.0, while Bartolone was at 39.4 and Buckley was at 39.56. Sutter was at 40.2, while Jacob Wit was at 40.3.

Mann said the team worked hard in the off-season to prepare for this fall’s high-school slate. “A lot of us

hit balls almost every day in the winter,” he said. “We prepared a lot. The work we did in the off-season got us back in the mindset to play highschool golf. High-school golf is a lot different than summer.”

Mann said York’s healthy 18hole tournament schedule during the regular season also paid dividends. “Those 18-hole tournaments prepared us for the postseason and helped get us in the groove to play as a team.”

Mann celebrated his 18th birthday by shooting that 68 at the conference meet. “I had all of my game together during that round of golf,” he said.

“I kept it easy. I hit the fairways and greens and hit my putts. I kept it calm. It was my 18th birthday so that was a pretty good present.”

Mann enjoyed the season as a whole.

“I thought I was a good leader,” he said. “I tried to be the guy that was there for the team. If someone wasn’t playing well, I was there keeping a positive attitude and keeping guys up if they got down.”

The York girls volleyball team dropped a 27-25, 25-14 decision to West Suburban Conference Silver Division foe Downers Grove North in the championship match of the Class 4A York sectional in Elmhurst.

Downers Grove North went on to win its supersectional match and will play in the Class 4A state semifinals this weekend in Normal.

York finished the season with a 2613 record.

In the match against Downers Grove North, sophomore Gigi Barr had six kills, while senior Jessica Levy had five kills. York hit .210 in the match. Downers North held a 3017 kills advantage and an 8-0 edge in service aces.

Senior Asha Labine had three blocks. Sophomore Katie Norgle

had 26 digs, while sophomore setter Grace Meadows had 15 assists and eight digs. Barr had nine digs, while senior Sarah Baird had six digs.

York reached the sectional final by recording a 23-25, 25-15, 25-20 win over fellow WSC Silver opponent Lyons Township in the semifinals.

Barr had 19 kills and hit .486 in the match. Levy had 18 kills and hit .368. York hit .354 as a team. Baird, Meadows and Levy each had two aces.

Sophia Glabus had six blocks, while sophomore Stella Barr had

four blocks. Norgle finished with 22 digs, while Levy had 21 digs. Gigi Barr had 14 digs. Meadows finished with 39 assists.

York was playing in the sectional for the ninth time since 2007.

The Knights lost 25-12, 25-18 to Elgin Harvest Christian Academy in the

IC Catholic Prep advanced to the sectional final after a 25-8, 25-10 win over Chicago Holy Trinity in the sectional semifinals.

IC Catholic Prep won the Class 2A Des Plaines Willows Academy regional title. The Knights defeated Elgin St. Edward 25-19, 25-13 for the title after downing North Shore Country Day 2512, 25-18 in the regional semifinals.

It was IC Catholic Prep’s fourth regional title since 2013.

The youthful IC Catholic Prep girls cross-country team concluded its historic season by placing sixth at the recent Class 1A state finals meet at Peoria’s Detweiler Park.

The Knights finished with 234 points, eight points out of fifth place.

Eureka won the state title with 84 points.

It’s IC Catholic Prep’s best-ever finish as a team.

Freshman Carly Manchester finished eighth in the state with a time of 17:39.73 (5:53 mile average).

Marengo won the conference title with a 6-0 mark. Marengo’s two losses came in Week 1 to Sterling at home and in Week 4 to a Stratford, Wisconsin team. Heading into last week, Marengo had played six teams with winning records (4-2 mark). It did defeat Richmond-Burton by a single point. Richmond is still alive in the bottom half of the Class 4A bracket. Marengo’s loss to Sterling was to a team that remains alive in the Class 5A state playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the top half of the bracket. Stratford, Wisconsin is in the semifinals of the Wisconsin Division 5 state playoffs and has a 10-2 record.

Timothy Christian’s dynamic girls tennis duo of Abygale Ahn and Cassandra Lee was dynamite once again this season.

Ahn and Lee finished third in the state in doubles at the Class 1A level for a second year in a row.

Lee finished the season with a 35-2 record, while Ahn was 31-2. Lee earned all-conference accolades.

They helped Timothy go 10-7 overall and finish third in the conference. Timothy coach Keith Mills noted of the team’s seven losses, six were by scores of 3-2. “Every match was close,” he said.

The other loss was a 4-1 setback to Wheaton Academy where Ahn and Lee played doubles together.

Ahn, who also played volleyball during the fall at the school, finished her high-school career with a 108-13 record.

Lee, a sophomore, already is 72-4 in two seasons and likely will break the program’s all-time wins record held by 2016 graduate McKenna Byrne, who had 113 victories.

“It’s amazing what Abygale and Cassandra accomplished in two years,” said Mills. “There are several reasons. Abygale plays full-time on the volleyball team and attends practice when available. They can only play together a few times a season as we don’t really have another first singles player to fill that spot. To

Mills pointed out the Class 1A state champions from Chicago Payton Prep were defeated by Ahn and Lee a week earlier in the Timothy sectional by scores of 6-0, 6-1.

Mills was pleased with the team’s progress throughout the season.

“They kept on a positive track all season despite a lot of moving parts with the lineup,” he said. “Two varsity players also played volleyball and one starter dealt with a season-long illness that prevented her from playing consistently.

“Our players became very adaptable as far as positions and most could play either singles or doubles at any point.”

Mills noted at the 28-team Lockport invitational Timothy was the smallest school “by far in the tourney.”

“In order to win vs. larger pro-

grams we had to get creative with the lineup and girls had to step into singles roles and/or doubles positions with different partners.”

Timothy also took second at its own eight-team tournament with 3-2 wins against Lincoln-Way East, Minooka and St. Charles East.

Mills cited further strong play from Abby and Sarah Carstensen.

“Abby and Sarah both played first and second doubles most of the season and were only second-year tennis players,” he said. “They are great teammates and work very hard at practice. Sarah is only a sophomore and should be a big part of the team the next two years.”

Sophomore Georgia Wells also stepped up for the Trojans. “Georgia was called up to varsity after three weeks and won several big matches at the end of the season,” said the coach.

Mills said team chemistry was through the roof this season. “Their attitude and teamwork was second to none,” he said. “They were constantly encouraging their teammates and staying positive.”

Mills sees more positives in the future for the program. “Next year our depth at the lower spots should improve,” he noted. “Cassandra will be penciled into No. 1 singles all year with Abygale gone. She should have another successful year. Cary Bone, Abby Schaafsma, Georgia and Sarah Carstensen all return, most likely in doubles spots. A number of JV players will be fighting for the remaining three starting spots. We shouldn’t have any dual-sport players and hopefully we can stay injury-free.”

ICCP girls XC team wins Regional meet The 2018 girls cross country team is off to a historic start. The team won their Regional competition this past weekend with three individuals placing in the top five.

Individual finishes include: 1) Kennedy Calcagno 2) Carly Manchester 4) Frankie Chaidez 5) Annie Guinan 6) Alia Johnson And, excellent finishes by Maggie O’Brien and Frances Cooke.

Both the girls and boys teams then competed in the Cross Country IHSA 1A Sectionals in Lisle.

Frankie Chaidez, a sophomore, a returning 3rd place 1A finisher leads a youthful aspiring group of runners.

They started their season off with a win at the Westmont triangular over Westmont and Aurora Central Catholic. Chaidez, Kennedy Calcagno (freshman) and Carly Manchester (freshman) finished 1, 2, and 3 followed by Annie Guinan (junior - 6th), Alia Johnson (junior - 8th), Leeza Maloney (junior - 21st) and Maggie O’brien (freshman - 22nd) scoring 20 team points.

The team then took first place in the Knight Invite at Plunkett Park on Sept. 8. As a team, they placed five girls in the top ten, which earned them the championship for the first time in team history.

Staying true to firsts in team history, the team followed their Knight invite championship with another first place finish at St. Francis on September 14th and then won another first place championship at the Harvest Christian Invite on Sept. 22.

The team has been focused on constant improvement in their daily practices which has allowed them to become stronger with each race.

Many of the runners fully committed to training during the summer at CK Running Camp and that dedication has proven vital to the team’s quick start this season.

This group of girls has been catapulted from cross country obscurity to a ranking of 10th in 1A in the state of Illinois.

The girls have enjoyed the season so far, but they have goals of going to the state championship and chasing the dreams of bringing home some hardware for ICCP. “Our program is centered around developing powerful women who are dedicated to a common goal — team success,” said Calcagno. “We really don’t know what the future has in store for our team, but we are committed to making the community, town and school proud.”

YORK HIGH SCHOOL PLAYER OF THE WEEK YORK BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM The York boys cross-country team finished fourth at the recent Class 3A state finals meet in Peoria.

It was York’s highest state finals finish since 2015.

Ethan Kern finished ninth in the state with a time of 14:32.46 to lead the way for York.

The York boys cross-country team returned to its normal perch at the recent Class 3A state finals meet in Peoria.

The Dukes took fourth as a team at Detweiler Park in a hotly contested race that saw no team fall under the 100-point barrier.

Wheaton-Warrenville South won the state title with 116 points and three individuals in the top 11 scoring positions.

Hersey was second at 156 (2 runners in the top 15 scoring positions). Neuqua Valley was third with 159 points (3 runners in the

top 20 scoring positions).

York had finished sixth last year at state and 16th in 2016. The Dukes were fourth in 2015.

In this decade, York has two state titles to its credit (2010 and 2012) and three fourth-place finishes along with a fifth and two sixths.

York was fourth this time with 185 points (2 runners in the top 25 scoring positions), two points better than fifth-place St. Charles East.

York junior Ethan Kern took ninth overall in the state with a time of 14:32.46 (4:51 mile average) and counted seventh for team scoring purposes.

Sophomore Colin Hill was 30th overall (21st scoring) with a time of 14:53.62 (4:58 mile average).

Junior Daniel Klysh was 43rd overall (32nd scoring) with a time of 14:59.59 (5:00 mile average).

Junior Brian Pratt placed 61st overall (47th scoring) in 15:09.02 (5:03 mile average). Junior Michael Moriarty rounded out the York scoring with a 101st place finish (78th scoring) with a time of 15:21.72 (5:07 mile average).

Sophomore Sam Ayers finished 168th (134th scoring) with a time of 15:52.14 (5:17 mile), while junior Will Yasdick took 185th (150th scoring) with a time of 15:58.89 (5:19 mile).

Kern concluded his outstanding postseason by winning the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title and a sectional title, while finishing seventh at regionals and ninth in the Class 3A state meet. In Peoria, Kern was in the discussion for a top-4 finish in the race. Kern ran 14:32.46, while the fourthplace finisher was at 14:29.88.

DuPage County receives Illinois Sustainability Award Energy efficiencies save $868G annually, County says

Last week, DuPage County was one of 27 organizations or companies in Illinois to receive the award for its significant achievements in protecting the environment, helping sustain the future, and improving the economy.

The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC), who administers the awards, said DuPage County’s

selection for the award was based on the Vactor Receiving Station, the electric car-charging station located on the campus of College of DuPage (COD).

It also includes the County’s Sustainability Best Practices Guide, traffic signal upgrades, installation of energy-efficient lighting on campus, and other efforts to reduce waste

and increase energy. According to a release announcing the award, these energy efficiencies save the taxpayers more than $868,000 annually.

“DuPage County remains committed to being environmentally-friendly and finding ways to reduce energy consumption,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “This recognition demonstrates being energy ef-

CUB invites Elmhurst residents to discuss future of clean energy in Illinois The consumer watchdog group Citizens Utility Board (CUB) will host a discussion to gather opinions from Elmhurst-area residents on how Illinois can take advantage of opportunities to make affordable, clean energy accessible to everyone across the state.

Participants will be asked to provide feedback on the needs of their communities as they relate to jobs, environmental justice and energy efficiency.

CUB’s Environmental Outreach Coordinators Ivonne Ortiz and Christina Uzzo will lead a discussion entitled “How Illinois Can Win a Clean, Equitable Energy Future.” Co-hosted by the Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition, the event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave.

“With passage of the Future Energy Jobs Act, Illinois has taken great strides toward a clean, affordable energy future,” CUB spokesman Scott Allen said. “We want everyone to be part of the discussion on how we build off that momentum.”

CUB hopes to spark conversations on four key topics: • Ensuring equitable clean energy benefits across Illinois.

• Moving Illinois to 100 percent clean energy by 2050.

• Cutting carbon pollution from the state’s power sector by 2030.

unveil the new specialty plate and present one to the Alzheimer’s Association at Montrose Harbor on Sunday, October 28 during the opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m.

These purple #ENDALZ plates will raise awareness and necessary funds in the fight against Alzheimer’s. More than 220,000 people are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease in Illinois, and that number is expected to reach 260,000 by the year 2025.

The plate has a white background

and features ENDALZ, as well as the Alzheimer’s Association’s signature color purple and logo.

“It’s incredible to see these Alzheimer’s Association purple plates starting to show up on Illinois roads,” Jen Belkov, Vice President of Public Policy for the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter said.
