ICCP football repeats as state champions Knights win program’s fourth state title; Eatman runs for 237 yards, 4 TDs

IC Catholic Prep’s football team made it two Class 3A state titles in a row with a 35-0 shutout of Pleasant Plains in the 3A championship game at Northern Illinois University’s Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.

IC Catholic Prep (ICCP) finished the year 13-1 and is 27-1 over the last two years.

It’s the program’s fourth football state title since 2002 and second under the direction of current head coach Bill Krefft. The late Bob Cozzi directed the 2002 team to the state title and his former assistant coach Bill Schmidt was at the helm for the team’s 2008 crown.

The Knights also shutout a team for a second week in a row after whitewashing Byron 7-0 in the Class 3A state semifinals the previous week. It was the Knights’ fourth shutout of the season and eighth instance where they held an opponent to a touchdown or less in a contest. Only two teams this season managed to eclipse the 20-point barrier against them.

ICCP ended the season scoring 632 points in 14 games while surrendering only 134 points. In the five playoff games, the Knights outscored their opponents 172-43.

How the game shook down In the win against Pleasant Plains, ICCP held only a 6-0 advantage heading into halftime after Lazerick Eatman scored on a one-yard run. The two-point conversion pass failed.

However, the Knights kicked things into gear in the third quarter. Quarterback CJ West, also the team’s punter, unleashed a 59-yard punt that was downed at the Pleasant Plains 1-yard-line.

Burglary suspects crash into police squad attempting to flee Three of four found later; one had loaded handgun

The suspects had two vehicles in their possession. It was later learned that the cars were both stolen, one from Elmhurst, the other from Villa Park.

A manhunt was launched by Elmhurst along with other surrounding police agencies and police K-9 dog units. Officers established a perimeter and, with the assistance of the other units, began a systematic search of the area. Eventually, three suspects were located at: 463 W. North Ave; at North Ave & Ridgeland; and on the 400 block of West Ave. Police recovered a loaded handgun from one of the suspects.

A fourth suspect remains at large and is still being sought, but is believed to have fled the area.

Christmas Traditions at the White House

JOSEPH P. SALERNO, 97 Joseph P. Salerno, of Elmhurst and formerly of Green Valley, Ariz., Franklin Park, and Chicago, passed away Nov. 27, 2017, at the age of 97.

Joseph was a Captain in the United States Army, a Third Degree Knight of Columbus, a minister of Communion at Visitation Church, a school volunteer and a life-long Cubs fan.

A devout Catholic, he prayed the Rosary daily. Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ivy “Cherry”; he was the loving father of Carol (Bill) Sir; treasured grandpa of Andrew (Amanda); and dearest GG to Avery and Adi; fond brother of Pauline (the late Frank) Padalik. He was also preceded in death by brothers and sisters Pasquale (the late Louise), Frank (the late Josephine), Nellie (the late Bill Craig, Mary (the late Victor) Rieber, Philomena (the late Willard) Padalik and Virginia (the late John) Gorsky. He was Uncle Joe to many dear nieces and nephews.

Senior bassoonist and concerto competition winner Nick Jack Agliata III will perform the third movement of Mozart’s Concerto for Bassoon.

York Orchestra students will be collecting canned and non-perishable food items at the concert in the lobby to be donated to a local food pantry.

History museum’s new executive brings talent, enthusiasm to job

Not since the arrival of Dr. Troy VanAken at Elmhurst College has this community seen such an enthusiastic person as it has in Dave Oberg, the recently-hired executive director of Elmhurst History Museum.

Like VanAken, when you talk with Dave Oberg, you can tell he “gets it.”

He gets what Elmhurst is all about.

It’s as if he’s been outside looking in, like he’s already sensed the synergy, the camaraderie, the sense of community that has been a part of Elmhurst for many years.

The Independent caught up with Oberg on his seventh day on the job, but the man who will celebrate his 28th anniversary in the museum business on April 1 was just as excited to share what strengths he brings to the position, as well as what he envisions for the future of the museum.

“There’s a joke in there somewhere, that my career in museum work began on April Fool’s Day,” he said with a laugh. “Working with history has been a passion of mine for quite a while.”

Where the story begins Oberg more or less stumbled upon museum work while studying at Rockford University, where he was an undergraduate with a history major.

“When summer came around, everyone was getting jobs here and there and nothing really appealed to me,” he said. “Then a [college advisor] told me about a part-time job available at the Time Museum at the Clock Tower Resort [in Rockford]. I started working there and I just loved it and decided to make it a career.

There was a certification program my advisor told me about available at [Northern Illinois University] so I took that.”

Oberg made the decision to remain at NIU to obtain his Master’s degree in Museum Studies. Oberg was the director of a museum in Geneva and most recently, has spent the last sev-

en years at the History Museum in Grayslake.

“I was lucky enough in Grayslake to work for a good City Manager, who had a good vision for the City,” he said. “He saw the museum as a major player in the effort to generate more traffic to the downtown area.”

He already feels the same sentiment about Elmhurst.

“This is a first-class town,” he said. “The town itself is outstanding and the people at City Hall – I like Jim Grabowski and everyone on the City staff.

“I look forward to working with others in town, I think it’s great that Elmhurst College is there, a firstclass pubic library, the organizations in town and how they all work together.

“At the Museum, I’m lucky to have a first-class staff, first-class programs and exhibits and a first-class, fully-engaged foundation.”

Talk about someone entrenched in museum work, Oberg not only met his wife at a museum program, but also, they got married at a museum!

Recognizing value of Heritage Foundation He was speaking of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation, which is indeed a strong presence in the community.

He appreciates their commitment to Elmhurst and its history.

“I believe we are the stewards of history,” Oberg said. “We are lucky to have strong foundation that understands, appreciates that and takes part in making it happen.”

There’s one particular event sponsored annually by the Foundation that he is looking forward to… the Summer Craft Beer Fest.

Jumping in feet-first Oberg is already informed and up-to-date about the current and upcoming exhibits. He likes the current display of “Disco Demolition,” because he can remember that event happening. He was very impressed with the By All Accounts exhibit that is all about Elmhurst.

“That interactive map is unbelievable,” he said. “You could stand there for ages and just keep getting into something else. It’s mesmerizing. It’s one reason Elmhurst is considered one of the best museums in the country.”

Ready to join craft beer enthusiasts If there’s any doubt about Oberg’s ability to fit in to the community, it all vanishes when you hear him say this: “I’m a beer snob,” he said. “I just love craft beers. I was really happy to hear about the beer fest in the summer.” Oberg said he’s even done some home brewing himself.

For more about his personal side, he and his wife Sonali love to travel and have been to many parts of the globe. They have made two trips to India, have been to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, all throughout Europe, and

The near future Oberg is anxious for the showing of Freedom: A History of US, which opens Jan. 12. He hinted about some exhibitions that may be on the horizon. He remained tight-lipped but did mention something about Snoopy and the Red Baron. Stay tuned for that.

A fan of Olde Tyme Base Ball A big baseball fan, Oberg has been involved in Olde Tyme Vintage Base Ball in years past, which has come to Elmhurst before, too. He hopes to start it up again next summer because it’s one of his favorite things.

“I’ve been the umpire before, I’m been the emcee,” he said, “and of course, I’ve played. I really enjoy the lore of baseball, its traditions, I love the old time rules, even for the spectators.”

He has made it a personal bucket list project to see as many baseball parks as possible. Any time the Obergs’ travels bring them close to a stadium, he does everything possible to get there for a game.

Obituary LOIS D. KALIEBE, 91 Lois D. Kaliebe, nee Hinman, of Oakbrook Terrace, passed away peacefully on Oct. 31, 2017, at the age of 91, at Elmhurst Hospital. She was born in Maywood on June 4, 1926 to Frank and Mae Hinman.

She lived for 42 years in Elmhurst and worked in the Elmhurst Public School District for 20 years as a teacher’s aide. Above all, Lois was a homemaker and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Ted E. Kaliebe; a daughter, Carol Ann Enyart; her

was most proud of her children and grandchildren, loving them unconditionally. Known for her sense of humor, Lois was a best friend to many, treating everyone with kindness and respect. Her hearty laugh will be missed but will live on as a memory.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

the suspect knew her name; she told police she does not know anyone contacting her from New Jersey. A reporting officer contacted the suspect, who was uncooperative.

Battery

Nov. 18 Police said officers responded to a recreational facility in the 200 block of W. First at around 2:50 p.m. for a reported fight involving several teenage subjects. According to police, the suspects were involved in a battery-disturbance in the gym at the facility. The four suspects, which included three juveniles and Walter Pena, 19, of Hillside, were issued citations for battery.

Police said a loss prevention officer at a food store in the 600 block of N. York told police at around 11:21 a.m. that a suspect reportedly loaded 10 bottles of liquor valued at $524.24 into two blue Walmart reusable shopping bags, placed them in a shopping cart and walked to the east store exit. The loss prevention officer attempted to grab the cart at the exit, and the suspect—described as a black male with a full beard, wearing a gray sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, black shoes and a black ‘do-rag’—allegedly punched the officer in the face. The suspect then reportedly ran out the west exit through the parking lot toward a fitness center. The suspect did not get away with the merchandise and the area was check for the suspect with no results.

Nov.17 Battery was reported in the 200 block of Oakland Grove at around 2:48 p.m. A victim told police that the father of her children and his wife (the suspect) showed up at her residence and demanded to see his children.

The victim told them to leave, and the suspect began yelling at her. The victim stated that she pushed the suspect who then allegedly punched her in the face. The suspect stated that the victim reportedly attacked them and she struck the victim in self-defense. Neither party wished to pursue complaints and no injuries were observed.

Nov. 17 A complainant at Elmhurst College told police at around 11:59 a.m. that a suspect was issued a no-trespass order on Nov. 3, prohibiting him from being on the property. On the above date, the suspect was observed on security camera foot-age at Schick Hall, according to police. A reporting officer attempted to contact the suspect with no results. An investigation is pending.

Disorderly conduct

Nov. 16 Dangelo Monte Norton, 28, of Clinton Township, Mich., was charged with disorderly conduct in the 900 block of N. Road at around 3:49 p.m. Police said a reporting officer responded to a report of a man possibly

According to police, the officer could smell an odor of tobacco smoke. The suspect admitted to smoking a cigarette in the bathroom because it was too cold outside, police said.

Nov. 19 A complainant told police at around 10:49 a.m. she is having problems with her son. She confronted him about his theft of money and he got in her face, yelling at her and being aggressive towards her, according to police. Police said he threatened her with a gun and then left the house. Officers located the victim’s son and brought him back to the house. He explained he wanted to get a gun so people don’t mess with him. He said he had no intentions of harming or killing anyone.

Nov. 21 Inocente Blas-Martinez, 46, of Franklin Park, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage near Grand and County Line at around 11:33 p.m.

Nov. 19 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Villa at around 3:25 a.m., James Jelic, 20, of Cicero, was found to have consumed alcohol and was under the age of 21. Jelic was issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor, operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol content over .00 under 21 year old, use of false identification, speeding, improper lane usage, tinted windows and no insurance.

Nov. 18 Police said that while a reporting officer was on patrol in the 600 block of W. St. Charles at around 4:41 a.m., the officer observed Camilo Rosas-Flores, 22, of Villa Park, slumped behind the wheel. According to police, the officer initiated a well-being check and found the suspect to be DUI. Rosas-Flores was charged with DUI and violation of bail bond.

Harassment, threats

Nov. 19 A victim in the 100 block of Hale came into the police department at around 1:30 p.m. to report that a suspect had been texting her from a phone number with which she is not familiar.

She requested the suspect to stop texting but he continued. The victim became upset when

Route 83 told police at around 6:40 p.m. that she had received more than 158 text messages within a two-hour period from a suspect, who also is suspected of repeated harassing phone calls to the victim’s place of employment for the purpose of getting her fired from her job. Officers contacted the suspect and advised him to cease all contact with the victim and the victim’s employer. An investigation is pending.

Nov. 16 A victim and her boyfriend came to the police department at around 8:30 p.m. to report that a suspect was harassing her via text message. The suspect also broke and loosened the lug nuts on her current boyfriend’s vehicle, according to police. An investigation is pending.

Nov. 21 Sarah Eckel, 21, of Orland Hills; Alexander Finnegan, 20, of Carol Stream; and Alexandria Schultz, 19, of Elk Grove Village, were each issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia at Elmhurst College between 8:21 and 9:09 p.m.

Amir Jones, 18, of Maywood, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and violation of curfew near North and Melrose at around 11:30 p.m.

Nov. 20 Jonathan Gilbert, 31, of Maywood, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal transportation of open alcohol and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and York at around 12:02 a.m.

Steven Gulo, 38, of Kenilworth, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Crestview at around 9:51 a.m.

Nov. 19 Lionel Gage, 34, of Chicago, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis, and Rakia Kemp, 33, of Chicago, was issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol subsequent to investigating a suspicious vehicle in the 300 block of Fair at around 2:32 a.m.

Nov. 16 Daniel Griffith, 20, of Maywood, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia in the 100 block of W. North at around 10:12 p.m. Police said while investigating an unrelated retail theft, officers located Griffith who smelled like cannabis. The suspect admitted to being in possession of cannabis and a smoking pipe, according to police.

Antonio Marrero, 19, of Cicero, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, tinted window and operating a vehicle while using an electronic communication device subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Grand at around 12:11 a.m.

served a suspect described as a white male in his mid-30s, approximately 5’8” and weighing between 145 and 160 pounds with a thin build, wearing a navy baseball cap on backwards, a tan half-length zipper style work jacket and gray loose-fitting pants. He was standing on a public sidewalk at the southwest corner of Adams and Washington. When the complainant left for work at around 6 a.m., he observed the suspect on the public sidewalk in front of his home. Then, at around 7 a.m., the complainant’s wife called him to state that the suspect was now standing at the rear sliding door, looking into the kitchen of their home.

Officers checked the area for the suspect with no results.

Nov. 20 Police said officers were dispatched to a gas station in the 400 block of N. York at around 12:06 a.m. for the report of suspects asking customers for gas money. Upon arrival, officer s located three juvenile occupants inside of a vehicle, which had been reported stolen out of Crestwood on Nov. 18. One of the suspects admitted to stealing the vehicle in Crestwood, according to police, and was transported to the Kane County Youth home on charged of possession of a stolen vehicle, obstructing identification and no valid driver’s license.

Police said officers responded to a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 11:10 p.m. for the report of a retail theft that had just occurred. Upon arrival, a reporting officer spoke to a loss prevention officer who stated that Leticia Cazares, 49, of Wood Dale, was seen switching price tags and concealing merchandise, according to police. Cazares was charged with misdemeanor retail theft and felony retail theft as a result of prior convictions for retail theft.

A victim in the 400 block of Holly told police at around 11:31 a.m. he received a typed anonymous letter in the mail demanding money in Bitcoin or an unknown suspect would send damaging information to the victim’s wife. The victim denies any knowledge of the suspect or the damaging information.

Identity theft was reported in the 800 block of Hillcrest at around 12:41 p.m. A victim’s wife told police that an unknown suspect used the victim’s personal information when obtaining medical services at the University of Maryland emergency room. According to police, the suspect received medical services and a prescription, which was then filled by a pharmacy in Greenbelt, Md. Fraud was reported in the 500 block of S. Cottage Hill at around 1:59 p.m. A complainant told police that she has been receiving calls from a collection agency regarding an overdue payment for Sprint phone services.

Incident was reported as a matter of record.

Nov. 19 Police said a suspect described as a black male, around 28 years old, 6-foot tall and around 180 pounds wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark\colored jeans took a carton of cigarettes valued at $72.22 from a liquor store in the 500 block of W. North at around 11:13 a.m. and left the store without paying for them. A store clerk advised that the suspect approached the counter with the cigarettes; there was then an improper transaction on the credit card reader. At that time, the suspect

Chicago man charged in residential burglary at Elmhurst College Elmhurst police have arrested and charged a 35-year-old Chicago man with Residential Burglary after he entered an occupied college dorm room and took a credit card from a student’s purse inside of the residential dorm room.

Police have charged Joseph A. Phillips, of 756 S. Kostner, Chicago, with one count of Residential Burglary. He is currently being

held at the DuPage County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

The victim told police that at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, she was in her dorm room at Elmhurst College’s Cureton Hall when she discovered a male/black with braided hair with blond dyed tips in her dorm room looking inside of her purse. The suspect was also wearing a Chicago Bulls cap and a blue sweatshirt.

When she confronted the suspect, he said he was looking for some napkins and quickly fled the scene on foot. A short time later, police were alerted that the suspect attempted to use the victim’s credit card at the Wal-Mart in Northlake. With the assistance of eyewitnesses and technology, police were able to identify the suspect and subsequently take him into custody late Monday. It was fur-

Nov. 16 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop in the 100 block of W. North at around 9:22 p.m., Chinasty Burton, 22, of Chicago, was found to have committed a retail theft at a pharmacy. Burton was charged with two counts of retail theft.

Theft was reported at a restaurant in the 100 block of N. York at around 1:29 p.m. The restaurant manager was informed by an employee that a table of four subjects had paid for their bill with two counterfeit $50 bills. A reporting officer was given the two $50 bills that were printed with “for motion picture use only.”

The first suspect was described as an Hispanic male, 19 years old and 150 pounds with a thin build, dark eyes, 5’9” with a goatee. The second suspect was described as an Hispanic male, 5-9 and 140 pounds with a thin build and clean shaven.

The third suspect was described as an Hispanic female, 5-6 and 160 pounds with a medium build, wearing an orange sweater and a baseball cap. The fourth suspect was described as an Hispanic female, 5-6 and 130 pounds with a thin build and wearing a pink sweater.

Forgery was reported at a restaurant in the 600 block of W. North at around 8:10 p.m. Police said a suspect described as a black female between 23 and 24 years old, 5’4” and around 180 pounds, wearing blue jeans, a black jacket with “Cry Baby” printed on the back in white lettering and carrying a blue purse attempted to pay for her food with a counterfeit $100 bill. When the suspect was advised by an employee that the bill was counterfeit, she left the restaurant, leaving the counterfeit bill behind.

Nov. 15 Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of W. Claremont at around 10:49 a.m. A victim told police that he received a package from UPS. His bank advised that an unknown suspect(s) fraudulently used his personal information, opened a credit card and used it to make a purchase. There is no dollar loss and the victim will return the merchandise.

Nov. 10 A victim in the 200 block of W. Grand Ave. advised at around 10:35 p.m. that he believed he was a victim of identity theft. He opened two pieces of mail from Geico® and PNC Bank and both documents referred to a vehicle he did not own. The victim checked with credit bureaus and found his credit was run by an area car dealership on Nov. 10. The victim spoke with the staff at the car dealership and confirmed there was a vehicle purchased at that location using the victim’s personal information.

The vehicle was entered into LEADS/NCIC as stolen.

Nov. 18 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Villa at around 3:29 a.m., Hamangaba Hamusankwa, 48, of Elgin, was found to be wanted by DuPage County law enforcement. He also was issued a citation for improper lane usage.

She asked him why he was there and he stated he was just looking for napkins and quickly exited the room. Upon inspection of her belongings, she discovered her credit and debit cards had been stolen. Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 200 block of W. First at around 5:03 p.m. Police said a victim parked her vehicle in a parking lot in the area. When she returned to the vehicle, she found the front passenger window was broken. A black leather purse which had been on the front passenger floorboard was missing from the vehicle. The purse contained an Illinois state ID and a debit card.

Two victims told police that their son, a listed juvenile suspect, had removed cash from each of their wallets. Officers spoke with the suspect, who admitted to stealing the money in order to gain popularity at school, police said. The suspect returned cash to his parents, but the remainder had been given away. The incident was referred to the DuPage County Juvenile Probation Department as the suspect is currently on juvenile probation for other offenses.

The fourth touchdown for Eatman came via a nine-yard run up the middle with 7:24 left in the game. During that drive, Eatman also had runs of 15, 11 and 15 yards.

Pleasant Plains had 13 possessions in the game with nine ending via punt, two via interception and one via a missed field goal (the other was the end of the game).

West completed 9 of 11 passes for 110 yards. Jacob Lytton caught four passes for 60 yards, while Khalil Saunders caught three passes for 28 yards. Khali Saunders caught one pass for 13 yards, while Hipskind had the nine-yard reception.

On defense, Khalil Saunders and Max Cook each had an interception.

Kemon Reese led the ICCP defense

with 11 tackles. Khali Saunders and Kevin Cooke each had 10 tackles.

Saunders had two tackles for loss.

Cooke, Khalil Saunders, Ricky Mysliwiec, Michael Johnson and Packer each had one tackle for loss. Johnson and Packer each had a quarterback sack.

Pleasant Plains was limited to 155 yards of total offense. ICCP had 359 yards of total offense.

Eatman finished the season with 1,514 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns. West finished with 1,941 passing yards with 24 touchdowns against only five interceptions.

ICCP ended up averaging 455.9 yards of total offense this season, while its 14 opponents were held to an average of 171.9 yards of total offense.

Krefft moves to 55-16 in his six seasons at the helm at ICCP. Five of

his teams have made the playoffs and over the last three years his squads have gone 38-3 and 13-1 in the playoffs. In those 14 playoff games, ICCP outscored its opponents by a combined score of 569-139 (or an average of 40.6 to 9.9).

It’s also the second year in a row ICCP shutout its opponent in the Class 3A state championship game.

Last year, Carlinville fell victim to the Knights to the tune of a 43-0 loss.

To the future and beyond Looking into the future and of note, IC Catholic Prep’s athletics website has posted what looks to be the Knights’ 2018 schedule that includes a vastly different slate of games in light of the Metro Suburban Conference’s impending realignment and welcoming various new teams into the conference.

According to that website, ICCP’s

first two non-conference opponents of the season in 2018 will be against downstate Belleville Althoff Catholic (9-2 this season, second round of playoffs) on the road in Week 1 and against Joliet Catholic Academy (3-6 this season) at home in Week 2.

The Knights, according to the website, then would face Wheaton Academy (4-5) on the road in Week 3 followed by a visit from a familiar face in Bishop McNamara (which joins the conference next season) in Week 4. McNamara went 3-6 this year and was 4-5 two years ago, including a loss to ICCP. The rest of the schedule in order includes Aurora Christian (away, 5-5 first-round of playoffs), Aurora Central Catholic (away, 5-4 this season), St. Edward (away, 5-4 this season), St Francis (home, 1-8 this season) and Riverside-Brookfield (home, 8-2, second round of the playoffs).

Bryan Middle School Math Team takes first at ICCP Contest

Bryan Middle School’s Math Team took the spotlight at on Nov. 18 at the Immaculate Conception College Pre​p (ICCP) Math Contest.

A total of 16 schools participated.

The official results are as follows: 7th Grade: Joe Drewno scored in the top 20% of 7th graders; Nick Devine placed in the top 10%; and Alex Sherman scored in the top 5%

in the top 20% of 8th graders; Maddie Fine placed in the top 10%; and Andrew Brooks and Jericho Calago scored in the top 5%.

In addition, Andrew Brooks placed 2nd out of all 8th graders, and Jericho Calago placed 1st with a perfect score.

The top three 8th grade student scores determine the school total.

‘Group space’ to enhance socialemotional learning, intervene with substance abuse

The Rotary Club of Elmhurst convened at York Community High School on Thursday, Nov. 16 to officially launch a program aimed at early intervention for students at risk for or engaging in substance abuse.

The event occurred following yearlong discussions between members of the Elmhurst Rotary and York High School administrators about a partnership to combat substance use and increase adolescents’ social and emotional skills.

The program included a luncheon at La Brigade, York’s student-run restaurant; a presentation by Melissa Moore, York Assistant Principal for Student Services; and the official dedication of a student group space at York. Both the early intervention program and the group space furnishings were funded by a donation from Elmhurst Rotary.

allow students to be referred for an assessment conducted by a provider from Rosecrance Health Network.

The results would be used to determine a student’s need for treatment and recommendations for level of care.

While there is no cost associated with the assessment, the Rotary Club of Elmhurst has provided funding for York High School to offer an on-site counseling group as one of the potential intervention recommendations.

The group will be co-facilitated by Matt Quinn, of Rosecrance Health Network, and Bonnie Salvo, York High School Social Worker,

both of whom were in attendance at the Nov. 16th event.

The day concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and opportunity for members of the Rotary Club of Elmhurst to view the new space, which will be used for students to meet with members of the York Student Services department. Groups will serve a variety of purposes aimed at supporting students’ social-emotional well-being, ranging from managing stress and anxiety to dealing with anger or navigating common high school experiences.

The group space will also be used for the substance abuse counseling program.

Elmhurst School District 205 honors veterans York Community High School held its 7th annual all-school Veterans’ Day assembly on Friday, November 10. U.S. veterans, along with current servicemen and women, were invited to attend. The featured speaker for the day was York parent and army veteran Wes Becton, who relayed stories of his favorite fellow veterans, including former Elmhurst Mayor Abner Ganet; his father, General Julius Becton, Jr.; and his childhood friend, Ben Patton (in attendance that day) who is the grandson of General George S. Patton, Jr. His message spoke of the camaraderie and friendship created between and among those who serve in the military. Staff members who are veterans were also honored for their service.

Each Veterans Day, York Military History Club members and District 205 employee Jerry Christopherson display 101 American flags along the driveway leading to the school.

The flags commemorate former York students who have died in service to their country. Each flag is tagged with the serviceman’s name and military conflict.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, members of the York Student Council served a free breakfast to American veterans and their families/friends.

Churchville holds its 9th Veterans Day assembly Churchville Middle School held its 9th Veterans Day Assembly, welcoming veterans and their families to join them. The event is organized by math teacher and Navy veteran Peter Richey. This year, Mr. Richey produced a video montage showing more than 500 Churchville students thanking veterans. In addition, students read essays and the choir, band and orchestra performed patriotic anthems. Veterans also received a special gift that recreates a military tradition. Several years ago, Richey designed challenge coins with the school’s logo on one side and the emblems of all five military branches on the other.

These are presented to all honored guests as part of the Veterans Day celebration.

Sandburg Middle School also held a Veterans Day assembly on Friday, November 10. Colonel Mark Mallon, a Sandburg parent and member of the U.S Army, shared an inspiring message with students. Life-long resident opens Flavah restaurant After getting healthy himself, Kevin Gundlach serves wholesome menu

Chef Kevin Gundlach, an Elmhurst resident since the age of two, deliciously expands Elmhurst’s culinary diversity with his gourmet market-style restaurant, Flavah, which opened quietly in March 2016.

“People come in still thinking it’s a pizza place,” said Gundlach. (Flavah’s 570 S. York street location had previously been occupied by a string of pizza parlors.)

Far from a fast food establishment, Gundlach makes most of his dishes from scratch, including his soups, sauces, pickled vegetables, and jam -- he even smokes his own salmon.

Learning from his ‘Martha Stewart’ mom Gundlach’s road to Flavah was a circuitous path. His passion for cooking started at age 10 when he started cooking at home with his mother,

whom he equates to Martha Stewart.

“My mom would take me to local farms to pick fruits, berries, vegetables,” he stated. “She taught me how to pickle vegetables, make jams, and the art of canning”. (Gundlach’s mother still helps him can the items sold at Flavah.)

Cooking became his passion early in life. He remembers making dinners for his dad and brother when his mother went back to college. As he got older, he would frequently cook for family and friends, and at times his dinners would turn to large parties.

Moving around the country, returning home When he was 30, Gundlach moved to Steamboat Springs, Colo., to join his brother who was a server at a family-owned Italian restaurant. Under the tutelage of chef/owner Dom Riggio, Gundlach started his career as a restaurant chef. After four years with Riggio and a serious snowboard accident, Gundlach moved to Seat-

York Hockey Spirit Night raises $5K+ in fight against cancer The York hockey club has been busy both on and off the ice recently. When not battling opponents from the always tough Scholastic Hockey League (SHL), the club has been working to support two worthwhile causes.

On October 21, the club hosted it annual Spirit Night. The annual event included not only games from the Varsity and JV squads, but also an off-ice raffle, featuring themed gift baskets and other items donated by the team’s families and area vendors. This year’s “Stick it to Cancer – It’s our Goal” event raised $6,000 which will be donated to cancer research.

“The York Hockey community takes great pride in supporting charitable causes including the fight against cancer,” said York Hockey Club President Bruce Bare. “It’s a great opportunity for our players and our club to engage in causes that go beyond the ice. The players

“I had always been very interested in Japanese cuisine and I quickly advanced from tempura cook to head chef,” he stated.

Feeling the desire to be close to family and friends, Gundlach moved back to the Chicago area and enjoyed a seven-year career as the head chef of Chow, a restaurant in Elmhurst.

“When I left Chow, I decided I wanted my own restaurant. I was also very intent on getting healthy and losing weight,” he said. “I worked out, ate healthy, and lost 95 pounds. People notice my weight loss and, knowing I was a chef, expressed interest in healthy prepared food.”

“For example, a client wanted a menu to reflect the show ‘Stranger Things.’ I made upside-down deviled eggs, and pumpkin chicken with waffles and honey jalapeño sauce.”

Where did the name Flavah originate?

“I’m always asked how I came up with the name,” said Gundlach. “My mom was driving in Boston and saw a license plate that said ‘Lobstah’.

As a take-off on that, she suggested I call the restaurant Flavah.

“And I did.”

Dishes based on healthy lifestyle Gundlach’s restaurant concept was influenced by his imaginative cooking style and his newfound healthy lifestyle.

“I wanted to make my dishes healthy, while also expressing my creativity,” he said. “I feel a lot of different cuisines blend well, like Asian and Mexican, but most people wouldn’t do it on their own -- like my Korean tacos.”

Gundlach also works hard to keep his recipes healthy, yet tasty.

“I make all my soups from scratch, using no cream or butter,” he said. “I cut out the calories by using spices,

herbs, and oils.”

The restaurant has a menu of sandwiches and salads creatively designed by Gundlach that are available every day. One of his favorites, the Angler, contains his house-smoked salmon.

Flavah also offers four to five ever-changing daily specials – fully cooked and refrigerated – ready for customers to take home.

“Where I can really bring out my creativity is in my daily special dishes,” he said. “Here I’m allowed to go in whatever direction I want.”

All things considered, Timothy Christian girls basketball coach Michele Strube was pleased with how her team fought through the recent IMSA-Aurora Christian season-opening tournament.

The Trojans finished 2-2 and played the majority of the games shorthanded. Standout guard Jordyn Strube suf-

fered a wrist injury early-on and will be sidelined through at least the end of the month.

“It was a rough week, but we hung in there,” she said. “Jordyn wants to come back for that Dec. 1 game in our new field house. There’s no way she wants to miss that. She had a great first game with 14 points and then got injured. That first game against Ottawa we had eight girls and were miss-

ing only one girl. Ottawa was a good team. We couldn’t stay with them in the second half. Aurora Christian is a team we could have beaten. We were with them most of the game and ended up losing by 10. We only had six girls and that was rough. We have nine girls on the team and three girls got hurt.”

One big positive was the play of Hannah Schuringa, who came back

from injury and was released just in time for the team’s first game of the tournament. “Hannah is a freshman who hasn’t been able to practice and was released before the first game,” said Strube. “She got hurt during volleyball. She didn’t really know our plays, but she’s a good basketball player. We kept it super simple,

The IC Catholic Prep boys basketball team kicked off the season by going 3-1 and taking third-place at the Manteno/Coal City tournament.

The Knights opened play with a 5943 win over Peotone. IC Catholic Prep led 14-10 after the first quarter and 3024 at halftime. The Knights outscored Peotone 12-7 in the third quarter and 17-12 in the fourth quarter.

Kevin Cheng led the Knights with 23 points, including three 3-pointers. Nico Gaudio added 13 points, while Alex Meurer had 12 points (one 3-pointer).

IC Catholic Prep then lost 65-60 to Manteno in overtime. The Knights led 10-7 after the first quarter and 24-20 at halftime. IC Catholic Prep extended the lead to 39-33 after three quarters, but Manteno outscored IC Catholic Prep 32-20 in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Cheng had another strong game for the Knights, exploding for 26 points (three 3-pointers). He made 12 of 15 free-throw attempts. Meurer had 16 points and hit two 3-pointers. Dominic Gaudio also hit a 3-pointer.

The Knights rebounded to record a 40-15 win against Beecher. The Knights led 11-3 after the first quarter and 20-6 at halftime. IC Catholic Prep iced it in the third quarter by outscoring Beecher 20-7. The two teams combined for one basket in the fourth quarter.

Cheng led the Knights with 13 points, including two 3-pointers. Nico Gaudio added 10 points, while Meurer had seven points (one 3-pointer).

Dominic Gaudio had five points, including one 3-pointer.

The Knights put a wrap on the tournament with a 59-46 win against Serena. IC Catholic Prep was hardcharging out of the gates, outscoring Serena 26-14 in the first quarter. The Knights led 33-22 at halftime.

Nico Gaudio led the Knights with 19 points. Ryan Wojtalewicz added 12 points. Cheng finished with 10 points and Meurer had nine points (one 3-pointer).

The Knights returned to action earlier this week against Lisle and will play next Tuesday Dec. 5 at Riverside-Brookfield to open Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division action.

IC Catholic Prep wrestlers busy during offseason Knights return plenty of talent, including defending state-champion Bianchini

It’s been a busy offseason for the IC Catholic Prep wrestling team.

“We had a productive off-season training, competing, learning and collaborating,” said new IC Catholic Prep coach Kevin Sliva, who was an assistant coach last year. “We continue to strive for excellence to build and refine our program for the future.”

In addition to earning a fifth consecutive IHSA team academic achievement award in the spring, three IC Catholic Prep wrestlers competed in the Illinois freestyle state tournament, a qualifier for the Illinois national team. Joey Bianchini, who won a state title for the Knights last year, took second and earned his second spot on the national team after having earlier qualified in Greco-Roman. David Vargas took third and Victor Vargas also competed.

In June, Bianchini was selected to represent Team Illinois in the Greco-Roman national team duals where his team beat Minnesota for the title.

In July, Bianchini made it to the

round of 32 in both wrestling styles at the junior national tournament held in Fargo, N.D. In October, Victor Vargas was crowned Champion of the Conflict at Carver tournament in Iowa City.

In October, Bianchini knocked off a previously nationally ranked wrestler in the semifinals and then a current nationally ranked wrestler in the championship of the 2017 USA Wrestling preseason nationals tournament at Northern Iowa. He won seven matches in a row.

In mid-October, coaches Sliva and Corey Stanley attended the USA Wrestling Silver Coaches College at the U.S. Olympic Training Center campus in Colorado Springs, Colo.

They were two of 50 coaches across the nation selected to attend and received advanced classroom and hands-on mat instruction regarding nutrition, sports psychology, peak performance principles, risk management, technique, rules and other wrestling-related curriculum from some of the top instructors in the world. The college is one criterion needed to obtain the elite USA Wrestling Silver Coaching Certificate.

The Knights are coming off a 20162017 season where they went 10-16 and took seventh place in the Metro Suburban Conference (highest placement in school history), while having three wrestlers earn all-MSC honors (again, a school record).

Bianchini, now a senior, will wrestle at 138 pounds. He went 38-1 last year en route to winning a Class 1A state title. He’s a two-time all-state performer and three-time state qualifier.

Victor Vargas, also a senior, will be at 195 and 220. He went 36-12 last year and took sixth in the state, earning all-state honors. Joe Scott III, a sophomore, is at 170 pounds. He had 10 wins last year and was a sectional qualifier as a freshman.

Junior Kemon Reese will wrestle at 182 and was 16-8 as a sophomore last year. Junior Michael Johnson will be at the 220- and 285-pound divisions after going 10-2 as a sophomore last year.

David Vargas, now a junior, also will go between 220 and 285. He was 24-13 last year and made the sectional and was an all-conference selection.

nothing complicated. I thought it was a tough week, but a really nice week for us. We have two very good freshman ballplayers who know the game. We have a true freshman point guard and our turnovers were down and she was scoring, which was nice to see.”

That freshman guard is Sureya Alex.

“It says a lot about Sureya,” said Strube. “She’s going to be a really nice player the next four years.”

Alex had nine points and four rebounds in the Aurora Christian game.

Olivia Schuringa also was lauded for her play.

“Olivia is going to be solid for us,” said Strube. “That third game against Harvard she had 22 points. I believe Hannah (Olivia Schuringa’s sister) had 18 rebounds. Hannah has averaged a double-double (double digits in points and rebounds in a game) almost every game and I thinks she’s averaging 13

rebounds a game. That’s from a freshman who has not been to practice. She goes out there and plays the game.”

Timothy also has been playing without 6-2 senior Emily DeBoer who is recovering from a leg injury.

“We will get stronger because of this,” said Strube. “The good thing is nobody is complaining about lack of playing time (laughs). Everybody has been able to play.”

Timothy is busy this week. The Trojans opened Metro Suburban Conference Red Division play earlier this week against St. Edward. Timothy hosts Chicago Christian at 5 p.m. Friday as part of the grand opening of the school’s new competition arena on campus. And the Trojans will get their conference rematch with St. Edward quickly on Saturday.

“We’re going to get better the next couple weeks,” said Strube. “The team

will gel together. They work very hard and listen.”

The two games against St. Edward in a week’s time were necessary to accommodate Timothy’s annual Renew initiative at the high school. This year as part of Renew, the Timothy girls basketball team is going to the Dominican Republic.

“We’re very excited about the Dominican Republic,” said Strube.

“We’re going to do some camps at their sports facility there and work with a lot of kids.”

In the team’s final game of the IMSA-Aurora Christian tournament, it was a 54-39 winner over Indian Creek.

Sureya Alex had 15 points, four rebounds and three steals. Olivia Schuringa had 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Hannah Schuringa had 13 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

division playoffs, New Trier downed IC Catholic Prep 257-222. Slowinski was 33rd in the tournament overall with an 882 score. He had a high game of 171. Cerasuolo was 50th with a 790, which included a high game of 182. Rickert took 60th with a 711. Lance Pollitz was 80th overall.

IC Catholic Prep also dropped a dual match to Chicago Christian.

Seniors Slowinski, Cerasuolo and sophomore Rickert all return from last year’s team. Slowinski advanced to the sectional as an individual and had a 165 average.

“CJ reached sectionals last year and is bowling even better this year,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Sarah Palandri. “Ian is in his second year with the team and is performing more consistently than last year. He’s already averaging higher than he did

at the end of last season. Vince has what it takes to make it to sectionals as an individual, but he needs to be consistent.”

Pollitz, a junior, sophomore Jack O’Brien and sophomore Shuflit also return and will see more varsity action this season. Senior Jake DeWitte is new to the team this season.

“We have a variety of players this year who are at all different levels of bowling knowledge,” said Palandri.

“The veteran players are crucial in helping build the newcomers’ fundamentals.”

Palandri knows exactly what her team needs to do in order to have success the rest of the way. “We really need to work on staying consistent,” she said. “In the first few tournaments and matches this year, we’ve had games with good total pinfall to

a game where no one can mark and our pinfall is extremely poor. When a player is consistent and can pick up their spares, they will see their score and average go up.”

Palandri added team chemistry will go a long way for the Knights this season. “As with the last few years, we are a team that likes to have fun,” she said. “If we lose the first game in a match, the players really can look at the positives and laugh at little mistakes they may have made.”

IC Catholic Prep competed in a dual match at Lisle Lanes against Naperville Central earlier in the week and returns to action Monday, Dec. 4 at home at Brunswick Zone in Glendale Heights against Hinsdale Central. The team host their Knight Invite on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Brunswick Zone.

In the first IWCOA.net Illinois state high-school rankings, Bianchini is ranked No. 2 at 138 pounds, while Victor Vargas is No. 6 at 220 and David Vargas is No. 10 at 285.

“We’ll be deeper than last season,” said Sliva. “We have much more experience in the lineup and more wrestlers who trained in the off-season.

We continue to build one of the best coaching staffs in the area and are excited for the addition of two new seasoned and enthusiastic team managers.”

Health will be a key for the Knights this season. “On the mat, to be the most successful as a team our athletes need to stay healthy and injury-free,” said Sliva. “Off the mat, everyone needs to continue to apply the same work ethic they use in the wrestling room in the classroom. Our No. 1 goal is to win the IHSA team academic award for a sixth consecutive year with a team GPA higher than last season.”

Sliva added work ethic will take the team far this season. “I’ve never been around a group of kids that come into the wrestling room focused, respectful, ready to learn and work so hard,” he said. “The group we have in the room right now, and I’m expecting a large group of kids to join after football season is over, well, it’s going to be exciting for the coaches to watch them grow.”

Sliva said David Vargas is one wrestler to keep an eye on. “David is poised to make some noise,” he said.

“He won our team’s most improved wrestler award by tremendously improving over the course of last season. He started 7-10 and finished 17-3 winning both the Metro Suburban Conference and regional tournaments.

That young man has a lot of heart and you can’t teach that. In addition, he’s an outstanding student with excep-

tional grades.”

The coach added Reese and Johnson also will be key contributors.

“Keep an eye on both Kemon and Michael,” he said. “They are two more exceptional student-athletes who excel in the classroom. The sky is the limit with both on the mat.”

Sliva noted this year’s roster will be the biggest in school history. “Overall, we’re excited and optimistic about the season,” he said. “In October, we were asked by the IHSA to host one of the four dual-team sectionals and we’re proud to announce we’ve agreed to host on Tuesday, Feb. 20.”

The Knights also will send a contingent of wrestlers to the prestigious Dvorak tournament over the holidays, an event regarded as one of the top high-school tournaments in the state.

“Our most experienced student-athletes are thrilled about competing in the Dvorak,” said Sliva. “Annually it’s one of the most challenging tournaments in the state.”

Two freshman tournaments have been added to the schedule as well.

“Our new wrestlers are happy about the two freshman tournaments we’ve added to the schedule to give everyone the opportunity to compete against other athletes of similar ability,” the coach said.

Sliva said another goal of the program is to simply continue to grow the sport in the city of Elmhurst.

“We’re excited to continue to grow wrestling right here in this great city,” he said. “The community support has been incredible for a sport that has supposedly been in decline. Our coaches get asked practically every week by parents how they can get their kids involved in wrestling. There are plenty of great youth club options in the area.”

On Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 5 p.m., IC Catholic Prep will hold its senior/ alumni/youth night in conjunction with the team’s final home meet of the season.

“We are attempting to break a record by packing the gym,” said Sliva.

Keeping it basic

Junior lineman Ricky Mysliwiec is a key cog for the IC Catholic Prep football team

That’s how junior offensive and defensive lineman Ricky Mysliwiec paints the reason behind the success of those IC Catholic Prep football units.

“We grind it out and we get back to basics,” said Mysliwiec, who plays right tackle on offense and nose guard and defensive tackle on defense. “We do everything the same way. There is nothing new. It’s done over and over again. We also have great coaches who get us ready every week.”

Mysliwiec’s contributions on both

sides of the ball helped IC Catholic Prep win its second Class 3A state title in a row last Friday in DeKalb (a 35-0 shutout of Pleasant Plains).

Mysliwiec had two tackles in the state title game and was part of an offensive line that helped rack up 395 total yards of offense.

As an offensive lineman, Mysliwiec again credits IC Catholic Prep’s coaching staff, specifically offensive line coach Kevin Cooney, for helping him improve.

“I listen to the coaches and take what they tell me and apply it in practice and in games,” he said.

Likewise, Mysliwiec has learned plenty from IC Catholic Prep defensive coordinator Roger Kelly. “He’s taught me a ton of stuff like shooting the gap and doing a bunch of stuff to be a better player and get to the next level.”

Mysliwiec said despite playing on both lines, fatigue is never a factor. “I don’t get tired,” he said. “The coaches in summer camp make sure we are well-prepared for the season. We run and do strength conditioning every day. Anybody that is playing both ways is ready to go.”

Mysliwiec added he’s stepped up his leadership abilities this year. “I do like being a leader,” he said. “It’s fun, but you have to lead the guys the right way. You have to lead and you have to teach. I’ve taken a big step from last year. Last year we were led by guys such as Jimmy Kenneally and Robert Vitek. This year a bunch of different people like Dylan Packer and myself had to step up. Being a leader is very challenging and fun at the same time.”

Mysliwiec said earlier last week the 2017 season has been “crazy.”

“There are a bunch of words to describe it,” he said. “I love playing for these guys. They are my brothers and our coaches are great. There is no other team in the state like this one. The coaches are amazing and I wouldn’t trade any of my brothers for anything.

Each week, practices on Monday and Tuesday are really rough. But knowing your brothers next to you are doing the same thing makes practices so much better. We have coaches who are willing to teach you. This has been awesome. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Coach Cooney is out there giving us life lessons to be better men and telling us nothing comes easy in life. The coaches push us and believe in us and are always encouraging you to be your best. They tell us we can be great future leaders. They push us to take our talents to the next level and to build our character.”

Mysliwiec said he will be sad to see the senior class go, but noted he still has one year of football left to go at IC Catholic Prep.

“I’m going to miss playing with them, but thank God I still have one more year left,” he said. “I have a really strong bond with a bunch of guys and we have some young guys pushing us every day whether it’s in individual drills or team drills. They are pushing us to be better. Those young guys doing their job and pushing us makes us better as well. I just feel blessed and privileged to come to a football environment like this every day.”

York boys basketball team finishes second at Palatine tournament Dukes return a number of key players from a year ago

The York boys basketball team finished second at the recent Ed Molitor Thanksgiving tournament held at Palatine High School.

The Dukes lost to Stevenson 6352 in the title game. York opened the tournament with a 55-45 win over Rolling Meadows and then downed Maine West 67-52 before upending Algonquin Jacobs 44-40.

As usual, York coach Vince Doran noted this year’s team will continue to embrace previous mantras of past Dukes teams.

“We’re very small and tough,” said Doran. “We will emphasize blocking

out and keeping people off the glass.

We’re going to be very competitive.

I think we will be really good defensively. I like the way we play in practice. I think this is going to be a much-improved defensive team. It’s a faster group with a lot of good athletes.”

Doran also likes the team’s offensive prospects, particularly from the perimeter. “One of our strengths is going to be shooting the ball from three,” he said. “We have multiple guys capable of doing that. We’re going to give up some size because we are small, but the advantage to that is we’re going to be tough to guard.”

York’s roster includes returning players Erik Cohn (6-2, guard, junior), Nick Kosich (6-1, guard, junior), Sam Walsh (6-5, forward, junior), Mike Pedote (6-0, guard, junior), Angelo Martucci (6-1, guard, senior), John Milling (6-0, guard, junior), Danny Morrissey (6-0, guard, senior), Nate Lyons (6-3, guard, senior) and Collin Haus (6-1, guard, senior).

New to the squad this year are freshman Jeff Grace (5-11, guard), sophomore Nate Shockey (5-10, guard) and juniors Patrick Baer (5-11, guard) and Hassan Iqbal (6-3, guard).

Both Kosich and Pedote were felled with knee injuries last year and both are back and ready roll this season.

“We have to stay healthy,” said Doran. “We have a lot of returning experience. We’re still young on paper with only four seniors on the team. Our chemistry is important. A lot of guys returning always helps.

We had a lot of sophomores last year who gained experience.”

Doran said Grace and Shockey, the two youngest players on the team, are not on the roster simply to fill spots.

“Jeff is really talented and definitely belongs,” said Doran. “He fits in really well. Nate Shockey is up with us as well not because it was a necessity to bring him up but because he’s good enough to be up here with us.”

Doran said optimism and enthusi-

asm are in abundance this season.

“We have a competitive group that is looking forward to the challenges this season will bring,” said Doran.

“The guys are super-excited about the season and the coaching staff is as well. It’s a good group of kids with high character. We look forward to working with them this year.”

Doran said the West Suburban Conference Silver Division will once again be ultra-competitive. “I think the conference really is a toss-up,” he said. “Oak Park might have a little more talent but our league again is going to be real competitive. There is nobody that is bad and almost everyone has a Division I-type player.

York has a busy stretch forthcoming. The Dukes open WSC Silver play at home Friday against Glenbard West and then welcome East Aurora to town Saturday night before hosting Benet Academy in another non-conference game next Tuesday.

Timothy Christian boys basketball team goes 3-1 at Lisle Trojans gearing up to host Chicago Christian Friday in grand opening of new arena on campus

After a slow start, the Timothy Christian boys basketball team finished strong at the recent Lisle tournament.

The Trojans lost their opening game, but came back and won their final three contests to end with a 3-1 mark.

Timothy lost its opener to Westmont by a 54-51 count. The Trojans led 13-12 after the first quarter and 29-27 at halftime. Westmont outscored the Trojans 12-8 in the third and 15-14 in the fourth quarter.

Brandon Orange had a big game for the Trojans with 27 points. Michael Thomas added 10 points, while Justin Baez had six points.

The Trojans shot 41 percent from the field and only 48 percent (10-for-21) from the

foul line. Baez made two 3-pointers.

Orange also pulled down 15 rebounds.

Thomas had six rebounds. Ty Merrick added five assists, while Baez and Orange each had three assists.

Timothy was a 74-35 winner over Yorkville Christian. The Trojans led 26-9 after the first quarter and 50-14 at halftime.

Thirteen Timothy players scored in the game. Matt Owens, Baez and Chris Brooks each had 11 points.

Nick Huisman and Orange each had eight points. Timothy shot 52 percent from the field.

Owens and Baez each made three 3-pointers. Orange had eight rebounds, while Brooks, Owens, Nick Johnson and Thomas each had five rebounds. Owens, Orange and Thomas each had four assists, while Merrick

and Brooks each had two steals.

Timothy then downed Evergreen Park 5338. The Trojans turned a 15-12 first-quarter lead into a 33-16 halftime advantage.

Orange led the way with 21 points. Merrick had eight points, while Thomas had seven and Baez and Mike Martens each had six points. Timothy shot 37 percent from the field. Martens made two 3-pointers.

Huisman led the way with 13 rebounds, while Orange had 11 rebounds and Merrick pulled in seven. Orange had five assists.

Timothy concluded play with a 50-48 win over host Lisle. The Lions led 15-14 after the first quarter and 29-26 after two quarters.

Timothy outscored Lisle 14-9 in the third quarter and played even with the hosts in the fourth quarter.

Owens led the Trojans with 13 points.

Timothy will host Chicago Christian Friday at 7:35 p.m., as part of the grand-opening celebration of the school’s competition arena on campus. The varsity girls play at 5 p.m.

Randy Huisman will sing the National Anthem prior to the girls’ game. The Jessie White Tumblers then perform at 6:25, ahead of Chicago Blackhawks National Anthem singer Jim Cornelison at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets to the game are $5 and Timothy officials are hoping for a crowd of more than 1,000.

Local students to send 500 Holiday cards to soldiers overseas

Jackson Elementary School students created more than 500 holiday cards that will be mailed to U.S. soldiers who are stationed overseas and can’t be home for the holiday season.

Some of the cards will be sent to the 10,000 For the Troops campaign, a joint effort between local radio station US-99 and the USO of Illinois Great Lakes Naval Base.

Additional cards will go to Illinois First Lady Diana Rauner’s Cards for Heroes program, a partnership between the United Service Organizations (USO) of Illinois, the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, and the Illinois Executive Mansion Association.
