Chris Nybo resigns from State Senate Issues letter of resignation on Nov. 15

It was Sunday, Nov. 25 when the Independent learned that State Senator Chris Nybo who represents the 24th Senatorial District in Illinois, which includes Elmhurst, had resigned his position effective Thursday, Nov. 15 at 4:30 p.m.

In a letter issued to Tim Anderson, Secretary of the Senate, Nybo said it had been “a great honor and privilege

to serve the people of the 24th Senate District from 2014-2018 and the people of the 41st House District from 2011 to 2013.”

It was a surprise that the news had apparently not reached any media outlets, as a search revealed no information about Nybo’s resignation.

After being appointed to his Senate seat following the departure of State Senator Kirk Dillard, Nybo was then elected to the seat in 2014. He faced

a fierce fight in the recent Nov. 6th Election in a race that went down to the wire and even requiring a recount.

On Election night, Democrat Suzy Glowiak was ahead of Nybo by just 227 votes, prompting the recount. In the end, Nybo conceded after the vote count left him behind Glowiak 47,405 to 47,087, or 318 votes. Nybo then issued a release announcing his concession to his constituency.

an Elmhurst Alderman representing the 5th Ward, but he resigned that position early to run for State Representative, which he won. He then campaigned against Dillard in the Republican Primary for his Senate seat, but was unsuccessful. When Dillard resigned to take the helm at the RTA, Nybo was appointed to complete Dillard’s term.

At press time, there was nothing on Nybo’s own web site at chrisnybo. org that offered any information about his resignation, in fact there was no mention of it. On the Illinois General Assembly web site’s list of current Senate members, Nybo is found at the bottom on the list under “Former Senate members,” who may still have sponsored legislation under consideration. For example, that list includes Christine Radogno, who resigned in mid-2017 amid the state budget crisis.

Nybo appearance on that list is the only place to confirm he has left the Senate with the exception of his letter to Anderson.

The state legislature’s veto session began Monday, Nov. 26, and no replacement for Nybo had been appointed at press time. That leaves the 24th District, including Elmhurst, unrepresented in the State Senate.

No one from his staff contacted the Independent about the resignation and, at press time, Nybo could not be reached for comment.

The Independent will report further updates as they become available.

Hospital honors Elmhurst Fire Department, others, with 2018 ‘Run of the Year’

Last week, Chicago Wildfire Ultimate Frisbee announced a new partnership with Elmhurst College. The Wildfire will play six home games at Elmhurst College’s Langhorst Field for the 2019 season.

Langhorst Field will be the fourth different home stadium for the Wildfire since the team’s inception in 2013, but this latest move by the franchise will help set the stage for a multi-year contract with the college.

“We want to thank everyone at North Central College and the Naperville community as a whole for hosting us last year,” said CJ O’Brien, managing partner for the Wildfire.

“We saw an opportunity this year to move back closer to the city, and establish a long-term home that’s in line with our vision for growing the team, and we couldn’t be more excited to partner with the college and the

community.”

The field will also be the venue for the Wildfire summer youth camp scheduled to take place in June 2019.

With a capacity of 1,000, Langhorst Field is smaller than last year’s Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium at North Central College, which seats 5,500.

Fans will have the opportunity to be closer to the field and rally behind a more focused cheering section.

“It’s going to provide our fans with a much more intimate setting, which will enhance the game day to our highest level yet,” O’Brien said. “We want to create lasting impressions with our fans and the community, and that all starts with the environment in our home stadium.”

The Wildfire’s full 2019 schedule is set to be announced in February, and will include 12 total games on weekends between April and July.

Criminal damage

Nov. 18 Yanier Diaz Marquez, 23, of Northlake, was charged with criminal damage to property in the 200 block of N. York at around 12:54 a.m.

Police said a victim related that he believed Marquez punctured his tires and attempted to flee the area. Marquez admitted to damaging the tires and relinquished the knife he used, according to police.

Nov. 16 A complainant in the 500 block of N. West told police at around 2:43 p.m. that three of his vehicle’s tires were slashed and he suspects a former friend. Earlier in the day, the complainant reportedly received several text messages from the suspect asking for his property to be returned. According to police, the suspect related he was at work all day and the complainant has a lot of enemies.

Nov. 17 A victim in the 200 block of N. Oak told police at around 10:02 p.m. that she attempted to break up a fight between a suspect and another subject. Very minor abrasions were observed on the victim’s knuckles. Due to conflicting stories, no arrests were made.

Nov. 20 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 2:39 a.m., a reporting officer observed a crack cocaine pipe in plain view in the center console cupholder. The driver, Michelle Pack, 43, of Stone Park, was placed under arrest for driving while license suspended. A search of Pack’s person (incident to arrest), yielded three clear plastic baggies (containing suspected crack cocaine) inside the front left pocket of her fleece jacket, according to police. James Gregg, 57, of North Aurora, a passenger in the vehicle, was placed under arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia, police said. At the police station, Pack was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, DUI-drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of hypodermic needles/syringes, driving while license suspended, failure to signal when required, improper lane usage, and speeding. Gregg was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and illegal transportation of alcoholic liquor.

Nov. 19 Andrea Figueroa, 22, of Bensenville, was charged with DUI drugs and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Lake at around 12:48 a.m. Police said Figueroa was found to be in possession of cannabis, drug paraphernalia and Adderal.

Nov. 16-Nov. 17 A complainant in the 300 block of W. Adams told police that she received 12 bizarre emails from a suspect after the suspect made a delivery to her home. The complainant is concerned for her family’s safety due to the content of the emails. The suspect has been diagnosed with psychological issues and has a long history of police contacts. The suspect refused to meet with officers, but verbally agreed to have no further communication with the complainant.

A family member agreed to deliver the suspect a no trespass notice.

Nov. 21 Thomaseno Horn, 19, of Lombard, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Route 83 at around 12:32 a.m.

Nov. 20 Jullisa Herrejon Hernandez, 21, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for possession of

cannabis, no valid driver’s license and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near North and West at around 11:32 p.m.

Curtis Lonie, 41, of Bellwood, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of cannabis, open alcohol and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and West at around 1:52 a.m.

Angel Sanchez, 21, of Bellwood, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Emory at around 11:38 p.m.

Nov. 19 Miguel A. Gonzalez-Ambriz, 22, of Melrose Park, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, no seat belt and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 12:12 a.m.

Ruth Appiah, 45, of Bolingbrook, was charged with possession of cannabis and no rear registration plate light subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Spring at around 9:58 p.m.

Nov. 18 Meka L. Nicholes, 22, of Broadview, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop in the 100 block of E. Butterfield at around 8:47 p.m.

Tevin Shannon-Lakes, 24, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Myrtle at around 11:27 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances

Nov. 16 A victim in the 300 block of W. Fremont told police at around 2:30 p.m. that her doorbell camera recorded an unknown suspect, wearing a Scream Halloween mask, a green hooded sweatshirt, gray pants and black Adidas shoes jumping onto her front porch. The suspect then fled the area westbound. The suspect did not ring the doorbell at that time. Neighborhood interviews were conducted and no additional information regarding the suspect was learned.

Nov. 1 A complainant in the 100 block of W. Madison told police at around 9:15 a.m. that his ex-girlfriend has an active order of protection against him and he has been receiving phone calls and text messages from her children. The reporting officer advised the victim’s ex-girlfriend she and her family are to have no further contact with the victim.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Nov. 20 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop for a passenger failing to wear a seat belt and failure to secure a child under 8 in an appropriate child restraint system near North and Glade at around 12:14 a.m., the driver, Erika Almazan-Pacheco, 25, of Addison, was found to have no valid driver’s license (never issued). An inventory search of the driver’s wallet yielded a fictitious Social Security card, according to police. Almazan was charged with state charges of attempted unlawful possession of a fictitious ID card, failure to secure a

child under 8 in an appropriate child restraint, no valid driver’s license and no insurance.

Nov. 13-Nov. 20 Theft was reported at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed a dealer license plate from a company owned vehicle sometime between the above dates. Surveillance cameras at the dealership were unable to capture any information on the suspect. The stolen license plate was entered into LEADS.

Nov. 19 Police said officers responded for a delayed retail theft at a store in the 900 block of S. York at around 1:21 p.m. DuComm advised the suspects had left the scene in a black Lincoln. An officer reviewed the store’s video surveillance footage and observed the suspects put 10 bottles of different liquor into a shopping cart and exit the store without rendering payment.

Total loss was $260. One of the suspects was described as a black female between 25 and 30 years old, between 5’6” and 5’9” and 210 and 230 pounds wearing a gray zipper hoodie, a Mickey Mouse hat, dark pants and dark boots.

The second suspect was described as a black male, between 30 and 35 years old, between 5’10” and 6’2” and 175-185 pounds, wearing a black zipper jacket with gray sleeves and an unknown emblem on the front and the sleeve.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 600 block of W. North at around 3:07 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect entered his company’s unlocked trailer while it was parked at a jobsite and removed a Honda EU-2000i generator.

Nov. 18 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and York at around 12:44 a.m., Dionta B. Moore, 27 of Hillside, the driver of the vehicle, provided a false name. Moore was charged with obstructing identification, Moore was charged with obstructing identification, driving while license suspended, failure to signal and no rear registration plate light.

Police said a loss prevention representative from a store in the 600 block of N. York was reviewing video footage and observed two suspect described as black males fill two separate carts with frozen turkeys and leave the story without paying. Total loss: approximately $800. One of the suspects was described as being in his 30s, around 6’, 185 pounds, wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black gym shoes. The second suspect was described as being in his 30s, around 6’, 230 pounds, wearing a black baseball style hat, jeans, a black jacket and black shoes.

Nov. 14-Nov. 18 Theft was reported in the 500 block of Atwood Court between the above dates. A complainant told police that while she was cleaning out her deceased father’s house, she noticed two handguns were missing from a cabinet. The home was locked, no forced entry was made, and several other family members and associates have keys to the residence. One handgun was entered into LEADS. The victim did not have a serial number for the other handgun.

Nov. 16 Theft was reported in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 8:42 p.m. A victim told police that he agreed to sell an iPhone 6 to four suspects for $60. The victim handed the phone to one of the suspects, who then gave the victim three $20 bills but refused to release his grip. The currency tore in half, and the suspects left the area in their vehicle. Three of the

Veteran’s daughter reclaims father’s medal

Last week, the Elmhurst Independent shared the story of a local area resident finding a medal among his late father’s belongings that had been given to a U.S. Army First Lieutenant pilot named Frank Rush, who served during WWII. Wally Luszczyk was not even sure how his father came to own the medal, so he went on a search for Frank Rush. Thanks to Jeff Marchese, a news reporter at Channel 7, Luszczyk was able to locate Rush’s daughter Maureen Rush Brickman, who is now living in Arizona. As luck would have it, Maureen was in the Chicago area over the Thanksgiving weekend

to attend a wedding, so she made the time to come out to the western suburbs to accept her father’s long-lost medal on Sunday, Nov. 25.

Luszczyk, a member of the Villa Park VFW Post #2801, arranged for a Color Guard and a brief ceremony to be held – followed by cake and coffee, of course – to honor First Lieutenant Frank Rush and to present the medal to his daughter Maureen.

The VFW also presented her with a flag, which had not been draped over Rush’s coffin when he passed due to the loss of his military credentials.

They are making the rounds on busy roadways in cities and towns across the country. Stop signs are just so last millennium. The newest trend in traffic is the roundabout and it has me terrified.

The name sounds so friendly, so casual: roundabout. I’ll come to your house roundabout 6-ish. Let’s head roundabout to the beach tomorrow.

We walked roundabout the city for most of the afternoon. The word roundabout seems as amicable as an old friend and as relaxed as a prewashed pair of jeans.

It’s anything but. A roundabout is fraught with hostile possibilities, uncertainty and confusion.

Do I veer right or left? Do I have the right of way? Should I stop or go? What if I make a wrong turn and end up someplace I don’t want to be?

What if I enter the roundabout and can’t figure out how to get off? I’ll continue to drive in circles forever.

I’d be on a never-ending merry-goround but in real life in real time.

From my often confused perspective there is entirely too much unknown and undefined about the roundabout.

Plus (there is no way to say this without sounding uncomplimentary) many drivers are slightly to significantly challenged when it comes to the rules of the road. They don’t heed the basics. For instance, the slow lane is for vehicles traveling at slower speeds. The passing lane is for passing not for driving alongside another vehicle for miles and miles engaging in what is known as a “squeeze play” to drivers wanting to pass. When you travel for long distances on the freeway or highway, it is beneficial to use a new form of technology known as cruise control. Riding your brakes does not benefit anyone. When you come to a four-way stop you have to keep track of the cars that were there before you so you know when it is your turn because it is impolite to jump ahead in line.

If four-way stops are ripe for motorist dysfunction and aggression, a roundabout is that on steroids. A four-way stop at least demands that you stop – if you want to remain legal. A roundabout gives you permission to continue on your merry way; just try not to hit any of the other cars that are also going along on their merry ways. Good luck with that.

bomb their way in front of you, leaving you to slam on your brakes in order to avoid collision causing undue anxiety that distracts you and makes you miss your roundabout exit and you end up lost in some little town somewhere because the roundabout took you right instead of your intended left.

It is for all these reasons I avoid roundabouts at all costs. If I know about or sense one in my future, I make like Siri and revise my route.

Roundabout be damned; if I have to go miles out of my way to dodge your confounding merry-go-roundedness I will. And I do. And I have.

Just ask my husband.

Don’t deem me a coward. I’m just calling it like I see it. And staying safe, one roundabout at a time.

Reader disappointed in ‘unfair reporting’

I am a resident of Addison and recently grabbed a copy of the Addison Independent. I was very disappointed to see the unfair reporting. On your recent issue, the front cover shows the pictures of four African American men charged with robbery. And to be honest, it’s such a petty crime.

Someone’s purse and a cell phone.

I’ve been living in the city for the past four years, until this summer.

Really this is not a big deal. At least, not important enough to be on the front page. Now, page 6, you have a story of a Caucasian male who was charged with a hate crime. He was charged with yelling racial slurs and even threatening with a knife! Tell me why this doesn’t get front page news, yet the petty crime of four African American men does.

Citizen Advocacy Center to present awards for community activism

‘Annie LeGere Foundation’ among recipients

The Citizen Advocacy Center (CAC) will recognize its 2018 Citizen Initiative Award recipients on Wednesday, Dec. 5 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Center, 182 No. York. “Citizen Initiative Award recipients are proactive about problems they identify in their neighborhoods,” said Maryam Judar, CAC’s Executive Director.

Among the 2018 Citizen Initiative Award recipients is Elmhurst resident Shelly LeGere, founder of The Annie LeGere Foundation.

In 2015, the Elmhurst community lost Annie, a bright, vibrant teenager, to an anaphylactic reaction from an undiagnosed food allergy. Police

officers arriving on scene were not allowed under state law to carry or administer epinephrine auto-injectors that may have helped Annie.

Annie’s family founded the Annie LeGere Foundation to help ensure this never happens again. Annie’s mother, Shelly, approached her state senator about amending Illinois law to allow police officers to carry and administer epinephrine auto-injectors. One year later, after Shelly testified before the General Assembly, Governor Rauner signed the Annie LeGere Law, officially amending the State Police Act and the Illinois Police Training Act. Unfortunately, the law left doctors potentially liable if they prescribed epinephrine for use by police officers. Shelly asked the state to amend the Annie LeGere Law to shield doctors from liability for these prescriptions. In July of

2018, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed the new bill in a ceremony at Elmhurst City Hall. Elmhurst officers became some of the first in the state to begin carrying EpiPens in August 2018.

Other award recipients included Citizens in Action Serving All Blue Island for holding elected officials accountable; Sid Kincaid of Rockford, for ensuring accountability in student government and being a model watchdog; and, Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming.

Hawthorne class raises $1800 for Ryan’s Well project

Students in the 3rd Grade LA REACH class at Hawthorne School participated in a two-week, donation drive to raise money for ‘Ryan’s Well,’ a charitable organization which digs wells to bring clean water to towns in Uganda, Africa. The class exceeded its goal by almost double, raising a grand total of $1838.38. This includes more than $200 from a student, who asked guests at her weekend birthday party to bring cash donations for Ryan’s Well instead of birthday presents.

Pechanio named Bicentennial HONOR 200 Veteran Elmhurst resident Ralph P. Pechanio, long-time resident and chair of the Elmhurst Veterans Memorial Commission, is among 200 veterans statewide chosen by the Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs as a Bicentennial HONOR 200 recipient.

Pechanio and 199 other veterans will be honored at the Illinois Bicentennial Office’s 200th Birthday Celebration to be held at Chicago’s Navy Pier on Monday, Dec. 3.

“I am honored to represent the veterans of Elmhurst,” Pechanio said.

“I have only one regret: I wish that I knew of [my] nomination so that I would’ve been able to offer other deserving Elmhurst veterans as nominees. I am sure that Elmhurst could’ve had multiple honorees, like some of the communities. That being said, I will continue to do my best to be a credit to all who have served from Illinois and come home to make significant contributions. “‘Always Remember’ those who served but didn’t come home, and those who did who are in need of our understanding and support.”

hurst with the support of the Elmhurst Chamber, Pechanio is the only Chair of the City of Elmhurst’s Veterans Memorial Commission since its inception prior to the Elmhurst Veterans Memorial dedication in Wilder Park on May 31, 1993, and he has co-chaired Elmhurst’s Memorial Day Parade Committee since 1997.

“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition than Ralph,” stated John R. Quigley, ECCI President and CEO, who serves as Pechanio’s Memorial Day Parade Committee Co-Chair. “His contributions to our community in general and to our veterans in particular cannot be overstated.”

Representing more than 50 counties across the state, the 200 honorees are resident of Illinois who have been honorably discharged from a branch of the military. They were evaluated based on their achievements and contributions to their given communities.

An ECCI Civic Hall of Fame 2015 inductee, Pechanio has served the business and civic communities since his retirement from community banking in 1993. In his role as Treasurer, he also serves as Chair of the Ways and Means Committee.

His $100,000 gift to Elmhurst College to endow the Ralph P. Pechanio Student Internship Fund as part of the ECCI’s Centennial Celebration Capital Campaign earned him recognition as the Elmhurst Chamber’s 2017 Chairman’s Awardee.

Pechanio has served three Board terms as an elected Director (198082, 1987-89 and 1990-92), including tenures as 1992 Chair and as Treasurer in 1981 and 1990.

One constant during the IC Catholic Prep football team’s historic run the last four years has been the refrain of players singing the high praises of the Knights’ coaching staff.

And here’s head coach Bill Krefft piling on even more richly deserved high praise to his staff, which has played a key role in the Knights winning three state championships in a row and amassing a 52-3 record during those four seasons (IC Catholic Prep reached the state semifinals in 2015).

“Think of each position group as an elite group of individuals,” he said. “All our coaches are selfless and all are in for the cause. They all have a very high knowledge of football, our scheme and of IC football.

There is a different quality of instruction given here because of the experience of our coaching staff.”

Tony Navigato is the team’s offensive coordinator. “Tony is creative and does a lot of nice things with our offense,” said Krefft, an IC Catholic Prep alum and a lineman and co-cap-

tain on the 2002 IC Catholic Prep football team that won the school’s first state title.

Roger Kelley heads up the defensive unit for the Knights. “Roger Kelley teaches the fundamentals of tackling and blocking at such a high level,” said Krefft.

Glenbard West alum, University of Iowa alum and former NFL player Matt Bowen heads up the secondary.

“Matt Bowen has NFL experience and heads up our secondary and also helps me with a ton of decisions on game day,” said Krefft. “His eyes on game day help with the whole process. He’s a big guide for us during games.”

Krefft also had high praise for Mike Calcagno and Jeff Savini.

“Both of them do a great job for us,” he said.

Krefft, 68-16 in seven seasons at IC Catholic Prep with six playoff appearances to his credit, doled out equally high plaudits for the Knights’ junior-varsity staff. Krefft pointed

Timothy Christian girls basketball coach Michele Strube has reason to smile after her youth-dominated team took third place at the recent Aurora Christian tournament to open the season.

The Trojans finished 3-1 there with the only blemish coming at the hands of Ottawa Township.

“We should have been 4-0,” Strube said. “We had Ottawa the entire game until the last three minutes. Coming into the tournament we weren’t sure what to expect with two seniors missing who didn’t come out for the team this season. We have three seniors, five sophomores and three juniors. So far, they have played tough.

We are winning and we are excited about what we’ve seen so far. We pulled out two pretty tough games.”

Timothy went 3-1 at Aurora Christian with its starters playing large numbers of minutes. The Trojans are without 6-2 sophomore Greta Hoogstra, who is recovering from injury.

“Greta will be a huge help when she comes back. She’s 6-2 and has that big wingspan,” said Strube. “Our five starters have been holding together and working hard and playing full games. They are finding ways to win, which is pretty cool to see.”

Strube was particularly impressed with the play of sophomore Hannah Schuringa. “Hannah is awesome,” the coach said. “She had 23 rebounds in one game and 15 points and then had 16 points and 19 rebounds in the next game.”

Sophomore Sarah Carstensen also played well during the tournament.

“Sarah had a huge game against Aurora that led us to the third-place finish. She had 14 in that game,” said Strube. “She’s shooting 3s for us. We have plenty of outside shooters and then teams have to guard Hannah.

We have a lot of weapons to throw at people. It’s been good so far. The girls are working hard and listening.”

Strube knows there still are things to improve on at this early stage in the season. “Some things we need to work on are some of the basics such as screens and back-door cuts and cutting to the basket looking for the ball,” she said. “Those are easy things to fix. We also need to make sure we get more relief in there for the five girls who are playing all those minutes in every game. We can pick up our defense a little more and execute a little bit better, but I love our defensive part of the game so far.

They saw what we could do with it last year when we did some different things. Hopefully we can keep improving on that a little bit more. I’m not worried about too much. We’re doing really well right now.”

Strube said one of the team’s goals is to win the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division title. “We’re a different team this year and the conference is a lot different with St. Edward and Walther Christian leaving the division,” she said. “Our goal is to win the conference this year. A team like Aurora Christian is going to be one of our toughest teams in the conference.”

IC Catholic Prep’s Franklin piles up the rushing yards Sophomore credits offensive line for helping break 2,000-yard barrier

One constant during IC Catholic Prep’s run to three straight state titles has been a prolific offense.

This year was no exception as the Knights averaged more than 430 yards of total offense per game, including nearly 310 yards a contest on the ground.

At the forefront of that rushing attack was sophomore standout Kyle Franklin, who rushed for 2,378 yards on 256 carries and scored 37 rushing touchdowns. Franklin averaged 9.3 yards per carry, averaged 170 yards rushing per contest and had 12 games where he broke the 100-yard barrier.

Franklin had another monster IC Catholic Prep rushing performance in the state-championship game last weekend. He ran 22 times for 227 yards and two touchdowns against Bishop McNamara.

His running helped the Knights go 14-0 and run their winning streak to 26 games in a row (52-3 over the last four years).

“It’s mainly because this is a team effort,” said Franklin of his rushing superiority this season. “We all came together as a team. I rely on our linemen. I trust them as brothers and family. I trust those guys.”

Franklin also made sure to keep the ball in IC Catholic Prep’s hands when he touched it. According to the Knights team statistics, Franklin put the ball on the carpet only four times in 256 carries and lost only one of those fumbles.

“I made sure I kept the ball protected so I could take it in for touchdowns,” he said. “I attribute that to our coaches and the reps they give us in practice, teaching us how to keep the ball high and tight.”

Franklin said his job was made a lot easier by the work of IC Catholic Prep’s offensive line. “I’m getting

better reads because there is more protection coming out of the backfield,” he said. “I’m reading the holes the linemen give me and doing my best to attack those holes and put points on the board. Our linemen are amazing.

We always come together. I always make sure to thank them. Without them I don’t think I would be able to do what I do and without them I don’t think we would be where we are as a team. They do their jobs very well and protect us.”

Franklin is amazed at what he’s been able to accomplish in two short years at IC Catholic Prep. In two varsity seasons, Franklin already has run for 3,305 yards and 49 touchdowns in only 28 varsity games.

“I’m very thankful to everybody who has contributed to this,” he said.

“It’s amazing. I look back to guys like Jordan Rowell (2016 state-championship running back) and Lazerick Eatman (2017 state-championship running back) and now I’m here playing running back. It’s a huge role to be in and I know I have to step up and make the plays. I have to step up as a student and as a student-athlete. I’m focusing even more now on my grades.”

Franklin, who played youth football with the Saunders brothers, Kemon Reese and Ricky Misliwiec, said he looked up to Rowell, who now is at Northern Illinois University. Rowell had an equally impressive campaign in 2016 where he ran for 2,295 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Rowell, of course, ran for a Class 3A state-championship record 270 yards and scored three touchdowns in IC Catholic Prep’s 2016 destruction of Carlinville (43-0) in the 3A final.

The next season Eatman ran for 237 yards and four scores in IC Catholic Prep’s 35-0 win over Pleasant Plains in the 2017 3A final.

“I’ve looked up to Jordan,” he said.

“Me and him are very relatable in terms of the position and other things.

Jordan likes superheroes and I like superheroes. We relate well to each other. I knew him when I was younger, but not as well as I do now. I’ve seen him at IC games and he’s talked to me on the sideline. We have a strong bond. He was at our Marengo game and it was an opportunity for me to get some running back tips from him.

He said he’s proud of me. I feel grateful that I’m able to be in the shoes he once was in. He’s been there and Lazerick has been there. It’s amazing to be mentioned with those people.”

Franklin said his experience at IC Catholic Prep on and off the field has helped him both as a player and person.

“IC has an amazing family feel to it,” he said. “There is a good bond here with everybody. The experience at IC has been amazing. The curriculum here is challenging. The teachers challenge you academically and they stay with you and communicate with you. Sports-wise it’s been amazing to be part of the great teams here.”

The 6-3, 310-pound Mysliwiec helped the Knights run the table at IC Catholic Prep senior offensive 14-0 and win the program’s third tackle and nose guard Ricky Mysli- football state championship in a row, wiec was yet again a stalwart on both this year coming a level higher in sides of the ball this season.

“The coaches are there making sure I’m taking the right steps and doing the right things,” he said. “The coaches do a great job making sure we all reach our potential. They always have found a way to push more. The coaches have done a great job the four years I’ve been in the program.”

mon as getting out of bed in the morning. “I’ve drawn double teams every game and almost every play,” he said. “I’m happy to have that happen. I’m a team player. I know our linebackers, Khali (Saunders), Dominick (Krepulec) and Kevin (Cooke) will be there to make the plays. I love seeing our linebackers get the tackles.”

At his right tackle position, Mysliwiec was part of an IC Catholic Prep front that helped the offense average 432.3 total yards per game this season.

“I’ve gotten better at a couple of things, not just one thing,” he said.

“For starters, our coaches and my teammates always are there telling us what to do. We know what our job is and we know we play for each other. We realize we have to get Khalil (Saunders), Khali (Saunders) and Kyle through and pave the way so they can score. Our linemen work their butts off and watch a lot of film.

They are great teammates and great guys.”

Mysliwiec lines up on the offensive side of the ball with Michael Johnson, Kevin Akins, Declan Barney, Ryan Kenneally and David Vargas.

“One-hundred percent, football is a game of trust,” Mysliwiec said. “I trust my brothers and I trust them to get the job done. I trust them every bit.”

Overall this season, Mysliwiec chalked up another dominant cam-

paign to two ingredients. “We had a lot of guys returning from last season and the coaching staff puts in a lot of time day and night for us,” he said.

“They are the ones making us reach our full potential. It’s a real privilege to play for them. We also love to play the game of football and play for each other and play for our brothers.

We’re eager to learn and eager to get better and take the extra steps to get better. We know we always have to keep improving and get better and we have done that by working hard in practice and taking advantage of the practice reps we get.”

Mysliwiec said his run at IC Catholic Prep has been “crazy.”

“When I came here as a freshman, it was crazy,” he said. “It’s definitely been worth it.”

Mysliwiec was present when the Knights lost to Bishop McNamara in the state semifinals in 2015. That’s the same Bishop McNamara team IC Catholic Prep defeated last weekend for the Class 4A state title in Champaign. Mysliwiec played in that game as a freshman along with Kemon Reese, Khalil and Khali Saunders.

“That still is bittersweet for me,” he said. “It still motivates me every single game.”

As far as his future, Mysliwiec said he would like to play in college but hasn’t given it serious thought yet. Instead, he’s been zeroed in on his senior season at IC Catholic Prep.

IC Catholic Prep football team wins third state title in a row Knights vanquish Bishop McNamara to claim Class 4A crown; Franklin runs for 227 yards

The IC Catholic Prep football team made it three state championships in a row this past weekend thanks to a 31-21 win over Kankakee Bishop McNamara in the Class 4A title game at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

The Knights have now won five football state championships, all coming since 2002. IC Catholic Prep has won three Class 3A titles, one Class 2A crown and now one Class 4A title.

IC Catholic Prep finished the year a perfect 14-0 (the second time in three seasons it has done that) and ran its regular-season winning streak to 26 games in a row and its playoff winning streak to 15 games in a row.

During the last three seasons, IC Catholic Prep is the only team in the state of Illinois to win three state titles in a row and one of two teams to make the state-title game in all of those three years (Wilmette Loyola Academy is the other in Class 8A).

IC Catholic Prep got on the board first when Franklin scored on an 11yard run with 7:47 left in the first quarter. Tom Sloan’s extra point made it 7-0.

McNamara tied the game on a 42yard touchdown pass with 9:58 to play in the first half.

A Saunders 18-yard run and Sloan PAT made it 14-7 IC Catholic Prep with 8:50 to play in the half. McNamara responded with a 1-yard scoring run with 2:03 left to play in the first half that tied the game at 1414.

Cooke scored on a 1-yard run with 7:34 to play in the third to put IC Catholic Prep up 21-14. Sloan added a 20-yard field goal with 3:57 to play in the third that gave the Knights a 24-14 lead.

Another 1-yard touchdown run for McNamara cut the lead to 24-21 with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter.

Franklin gave the Knights some breathing room with a 60-yard touchdown run with 6:00 to play for a 31-21 advantage.

Bishop McNamara (12-2) had 265 total yards in the game. The Fightin’ Irish’s two losses this season came to IC Catholic Prep.

On the defensive side of the ball, Khali Saunders led the Knights with eight tackles. Cam Hood, Khalil Saunders, Ricky Mysliwiec and Cooke each had five tackles. Mysliwiec had 1.5 tackles for loss, while Kevin Akins had one tackle for loss and one quarterback sack. Max Cook had 0.5 tackles for loss, while Khali Saunders had an interception.

IC Catholic Prep had 10 possessions in the game and scored on five of them, had two turnovers, turned the ball over on downs once, punted once and ended the game.

Bishop McNamara had 10 possessions as well and scored on three of them, punted twice, turned the ball over on downs three times, had one turnover and ended the first half with the ball.

This is the third year in a row the Knights have had a running back rush for more than 200 yards in the state title game. Franklin joins Jordan Rowell (2016) and Lazerick Eatman (2017) in that elite group.

Since losing to Bishop McNamara twice in the 2015 season, including in the Class 3A state semifinals, the Knights have defeated the Kankakee school four times in a row by a combined score of 129-48. McNamara now is in the same conference as IC Catholic Prep. The two teams will square off again in 2019.

Shorthanded York girls basketball team impresses early

Krissinger named to all-tournament team; Dukes also beat 4-0 St. Viator

Youth is ruling the day for the York girls basketball team.

Coach Brandon Collings watched his team go 3-1 at the York Thanksgiving tournament with a group that featured mainly one senior, four juniors and three sophomores.

“We are young and inexperienced, for sure,” said Collings, in his second season at the helm. “In the tournament we had one senior, Kathleen Levins, get a lot of playing time and then it was four juniors and three sophomores.”

York lost to Downers Grove South in overtime in a game where the winner went on to the championship contest. “We went 14-for-28 from the free-throw line in that game,” said Collings. “We were 6-for-14 in the fourth quarter and overtime combined. We had two chances to win it.

We were down by one in regulation and down by one in overtime. We had two free throws each time and we went 1-for-2 to force the overtime and then missed both in overtime.

But I’m glad we were able to have a chance to go to the championship game. Our girls played well.”

Collings said nerves may have crept into the picture in the team’s season opener. “In that first game we shot 0-for-22 on shots outside of layups,” he said. “As these girls play more and more varsity games, it will be a lot easier. I think there were a lot of nerves. In the third-place game (59-51 win over Oswego East), we jumped out to an 18-point lead in the

first half and maybe thought that was enough. We didn’t play well in the second half and ended up winning by eight. That’s some of the stuff that you have to get through with an inexperienced team.”

Collings said York shows promise on the offensive end. “I think we are a better overall shooting team this year,” he said. “We didn’t shoot horrible in the other games and the one close game we had we let it get away from us on the foul line.”

Sara Krissinger was named to the all-tournament team. “She had a 15-point game and a 13-point game,” said Collings. “She’s averaging about 10 points a game right now. She’s a junior and she’s our captain. She’s a leader and is someone I think will continue to be our leading scorer.”

Levins is now in her fourth season on the varsity team.

“We have five new starters this year,” said Collings. “We graduated seven seniors and had only one junior in the starting lineup.”

That junior was returning all-conference player Maddie Stark, who tore her ACL at the end of spring in AAU basketball and Collings said most likely is out for her senior season.

York also currently is without senior starting point guard Kiah Rufus, who is recovering from a leg injury.

“We’re hoping to get her back soon,” said Collings. “Two of our three seniors coming back, we are without one of them for the whole year and without the other for the first part of the year. We need these younger girls

And step up they have, Collings noted. He pointed out York has had six different players score in double figures in games so far this season.

“We’re young, inexperienced and athletic,” he said. “We have three sophomores, all 6-feet tall. We have some length and we are deep with our roster. To go a four-game stretch where you have six girls in double figures, that shows you on any different day, we might have four different scorers in a game. It’s a nice problem to have. They will get more consistent as they get more varsity experience. Our top eight girls right now are tough.”

Collings also has been impressed with the play of sophomore Kaitlyn Kjome, point guard Sydney Fuglsang, junior Bridget Los, Levins (averaged 8 points a game in the tournament) and sophomore Sydney Molis.

Post-tournament, York faced off against St. Viator out of Arlington Heights at home and scored an impressive 60-49 win to move to 4-1 on the season.

“St. Viator won their Thanksgiving tournament by an average of 32 points a game and they are 4-0,” said Collings.

In the St. Viator win, York led 1716 after the first quarter and 33-30 at halftime. The Dukes outscored St. Viator 11-7 in the third quarter and 16-12 in the fourth quarter.

“Having a young team like this and having the first six games at home helps,” said Collings. “It helps give them some confidence and confidence playing varsity basketball.”

York’s sophomore team went 4-0 and won the sophomore tournament at York, finishing ahead of Prospect and St. Francis, which both had 3-1 records.

Look at a guy like Matt Bowen. He’s talking to millions of people on ESPN and he’s with us on the field here. We have a ton of people contributing. I learn from them every day.”

Krefft said the future of the program still trends upward. “The future is bright at IC,” he said. “We have a ton of younger guys who got time this season. We realize we can’t replace the guys who will be graduating. But we don’t replace guys here at IC. We take guys and move forward and use the strengths of the new kids and make that into our new system.

You could be seeing a different type of system. We had a great group this year and we have a great younger group coming up. We won both the freshman and sophomore conference titles if that’s any indication. I’m excited about the future.”

I’ve been focusing on getting better for my brothers and doing my best every day.”

Mysliwiec was asked to reflect on his tenure in the IC Catholic Prep football program, which came to a conclusion last Friday in Champaign after three state titles in a row and a state semifinal finish.

“You realize it’s your last highschool football game,” he said last week. “It’s crazy. I’m still in denial.

I think about all the great memories I’ve had on this football team with my brothers.”
