Every year, Santa Claus makes his first stop at the Spring Road Business Association’s annual holiday tree-lighting, which took place Friday evening, Nov. 19. It was cold enough that people had to bundle up tight, which means you can’t even see little Kenny Kapraun’s face! With him (besides Santa!) is Frank Catalano and his mom Reiko Kapraun. Recent sports accomplishments recognized The board recognized the pair of York High School athletic teams that recently won IHSA state championships. York’s girls cross-country and boys soccer teams both won state titles on Nov. 6. The two teams and their coaches attended the board meeting.

The Dukes won the IHSA Class 3A girls cross-country state championship at Detweiller Park in Peoria on Nov. 6. Later that evening, York’s boys soccer team won the IHSA Class 3A state title at Hoffman Estates High School. The Dukes defeated Fremd 4-0 in the championship match.

This is the York girls cross-country program’s second state title.

The Dukes won the state championship in 2000. This is the York boys soccer program’s first state championship.

Board member Jim Collins read a proclamation recognizing York’s boys soccer team. Board member Karen Stuefen read a similar proclamation honoring York’s girls cross-country team.

Childhood cancer survivors honored The board also recognized two Hawthorne Elementary School students during the meeting.

Fifth-grader Cavan Fazzini and third-grader Emma Barz, who are both childhood cancer survivors, were recognized for organizing a recent fundraiser that raised $1,800 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Both Cavan and Emma were MakeA-Wish recipients. The fundraiser at their school featured a star sale. Stars were sold, for $1, at the school. Students could then write their own name on the star, or they could write the name of someone battling cancer, or someone who passed away from cancer. The stars Get surprisingly were displayed in the hallway at Hawthorne Elementary great Home &School.

The two-week fundraiser surpassed rates. the goalAuto of $1,500.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will help grant a wish of providing a room makeover for a child.

Obituaries

PATRICIA WALSH KERR, 81 Patricia Walsh Kerr passed away in Encinitas, California on October 20, 2021 at the age of 81. Patricia was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 4, 1940 to Lorraine and Edward Walsh, the first of their five children. Patricia grew up in Elmhurst, in a household rich with love and laughter. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She attended Immaculate Conception Catholic school; class of 1958. She graduated from Clarke College in Dubuque, Ia., earning a B.A. degree in history, minors in English literature and philosophy in 1962. Upon graduation she traveled to San Francisco to work as a substitute teacher. Shortly thereafter, she met James H. Kerr and the two were married in August 1964.

They moved to Frankfurt, Germany, to pursue James’ career, living in Heidelberg for three years. It was there that her daughters Anne and Jean were born. Upon returning to the United States, daughter Laura was born. Ultimately, they settled in San Mateo, Calif.

In 1980 Patricia returned to her hometown of Elmhurst, with her three children. While her daughters were in college Patricia pursued graduate studies in Psychology, earning her M.A. degree from The Adler Institute of Chicago.

She thrived in the field, instrumental in helping many. Patricia was intelligent and skilled, positively impacting those whose lives she touched by her compassionate and caring way. She had a genuine gift of making others feel special.

A voracious reader, art and music lover, her interests were ever present in her life. Patricia’s greatest joy was raising her three daughters.

She was an unrelentingly kind, patient and supportive mother; she truly personified unconditional love. Her five grandchildren whom she watched grow brought her tremendous happiness. Her treasure of lifelong friends was full with deep connections and countless, wonderful memories. Patricia’s beauty and infectious spirit would

illuminate any room she entered or company she kept. Forever present was the sparkle in her smiling blue eyes. She was truly one of a kind and will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered, always.

Patricia is survived by her daughters Anne Kerr, Jean Kerr and Laura (Ray) Walton, as well as grandchildren Jack (Ally), Kate, Grace, Elle and Audrey. She is preceded in death by her mother Lorraine, father Edward and siblings Kathleen Farlow, Edward Walsh, Ter-

rence Walsh and James Walsh, all of whom she is now reunited with in Heaven.

A Mass with Patricia as the special intention will be held December 12, 2021 beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 134 Arthur Street, Elmhurst. Additionally, a Celebration of Life Memorial will be held in San Diego, Calif., date pending.

Some of the spires in the background can still be found to this day. While the date the photo was taken was unavailable, by the looks of the car in the background and the clothing people wore, it was likely the early 1900s.

Jury finds Luckett guilty of first-degree murder On Monday, Nov. 22, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that a jury had found Launden Luckett, 33, formerly of Chicago, guilty of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his girlfriend in 2015. The jury reached their verdict after approximately two hours of deliberations following a five-day-long trial in front of Judge Jeffrey MacKay. On Oct. 19, 2015, following a well-being check, Woodridge Police officers discovered the deceased body of Cecily Dickey in her apartment.

She had been repeatedly stabbed and choked. An investigation into the murder led authorities to Luckett who was already in custody after he was arrested by Cook County authorities on unrelated charges several days after the murder.

The investigation found that on the evening of October 16, 2015, Dickey drove to Chicago, picked up Luckett and brought him back to her apartment. At approximately 3 a.m. the following morning, a verbal argument ensued between Dickey and Luckett.

As the argument turned physical in nature, Dickey ran to the bathroom in an attempt to get away from Luckett. Luckett chased after Dickey and stabbed her in the stomach. Dickey then ran out of the bathroom at which time Luckett grabbed her, knocked her to the floor, continued to stab her and choked her as well. Following the murder, Luckett stole Dickey’s cellular phone, debit card and car and fled the scene.

An autopsy concluded the cause of Dickey’s death was multiple stab

wounds. On December 16, 2015, Luckett appeared in Bond Court where he was ordered to be held without bond. He has remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time.

Luckett’s next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 30, for Judge MacKay’s ruling on whether the murder was accompanied by exceptionally brutal or heinous behavior indicative of wanton cruelty. If Judge MacKay determines it is, Luckett could face natural life in prison.

Woman found with more than $500,000 worth of counterfeit high-end merchandise On Monday, Nov. 22, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and R. Sean Fitzgerald, acting special agent in charge for HSI Chicago, announced that a woman indicted by a DuPage County Grand Jury for allegedly fencing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of counterfeit high-end purses, wallets, handbags and other commodities had entered a plea of not guilty to four counts of Felony Possession of Counterfeit Items With Intent to Sell. The most serious charge is a Class 1, non-probationable, Felony.

Angelina Luy, 40, of Glendale Heights, was arraigned, where she formally entered her plea in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

On Monday, Nov. 1, Luy was arrested and charged following the execution of a search warrant by federal and local authorities. She

appeared in Bond Court the following day where bond was set at $40,000. On Thursday, Nov. 11, a DuPage County Grand Jury indicted Luy. On October 24, 2021, United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at O’Hare International Airport took possession of two inbound parcels from Cambodia, allegedly addressed to Luy at her residence in Glendale Heights. The declared value of the parcels was $374. CBP officers searched the parcels and allegedly found various belts, handbags, purses, wallets, and apparel bearing trademarks registered to Chanel, Christian Dior, Fendi, Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Moschino, and Versace. The goods were determined to be counterfeit and had an approximate retail value of $140,176.

On November 1, 2021, United States Homeland Security Investigations obtained an anticipatory

search warrant for the two parcels from Cambodia allegedly addressed to the defendant. The search warrant was executed at approximately 6:30 p.m., after the parcels were allegedly brought inside Luy’s residence. Following execution of the search warrant, authorities allegedly found hundreds of counterfeit items bearing trademarks registered to Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Piaget and Versace as well as more than $96,000 in cash. Luy was taken into custody at this time. It is alleged that Ms. Luy has been receiving and selling counterfeit merchandise since January 2021, and that the retail value of the merchandise is more than $500,000.

Luy’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 12, 2022, for status. Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Unknown event closes Butterfield

This was the scene at the corner of Butterfield and Prospect near Timothy Christian Schools on Saturday late afternoon, Nov. 20, when police responded to an incident at a residence near the location, which was on lockdown as of about 12 noon. Police were unable to provide information about the cause of the incident that drew many area police departments.

By press time, the Elmhurst Independent had received no response after contacting the police department on Monday about this incident that took place Saturday, Nov. 20 on Butterfield Rd. at Swain.

While police remain tight-lipped on the nature of the incident on Saturday, Nov. 20 along Butterfield Road, it drew a response from law enforcement departments throughout the area, including this police car which came all the way from Northbrook. Many emergency specialty vehicles were lined up down the street.

All traffic on Butterfield Road from Spring Road east to Bryan Middle School was on lockdown as Swat team members were on the scene at the Eldridge Townhomes on Butterfield Road at Swain Ave. for an incident that remains unknown but drew law enforcement support from other communities as far away as Northbrook.

Car crash leads to charge of resisting arrest On Nov. 17, police said that subsequent to a minor traffic crash near St. Charles and Villa at 1:09 p.m., Michael D. Knight, 35, of Villa Park, left the scene without providing information to the victim. Officers located Knight, who denied getting in a crash, refused to talk about the incident, and refused to provide insurance information, according to police When the officer advised Knight that he was going to be placed under arrest, Knight allegedly pulled away from the officer. Knight was charged with resisting and obstructing a police officer, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and failure to give information subsequent to a property damage accident.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Assault, battery

Nov. 15 Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital for the report of a battery to a public safety officer and a nurse. A victim told police that as he attempted to restrain the combative suspect, the suspect punched him in the face.

The officer observed a laceration to the victim’s chin and redness and swelling to the victim’s face. Charges are pending.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct

Nov. 14 Police said that subsequent to multiple 911 hang-up calls, a victim was located in a room at a hotel in the 300 block of N. Route 83 at 3:19 a.m., a victim related a suspect grabbed her, put his hand over her mouth, and slapped her in the face. The suspect also interfered with the victim’s attempts to call 911. The suspect was placed under arrest. He was charged with domestic battery, unlawful restraint and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

Police said officers responded to the report of a domestic battery at 11:01 a.m. The complainant told police the suspect kicked her after being asked to complete a chore. There were no signs of injury and the complainant declined medical attention.

Nov. 12 A 22-year-old Addison man was charged with two counts of domestic battery and resisting a police officer near North and Oak at 4:29 p.m.

Nov. 11 Police said officers responded to the 600 block of S. York at 8:37 a.m. for the report of a domestic disturbance. The reporting officer met with the complainant who reported her daughter was breaking items in the residence.

The situation was calm and the suspect agreed to leave the apartment.

DUI, transportation of open alcohol

Nov. 14 Jacqueline Macias, 47, of Chicago, was charged with two counts of DUI with a child passenger, illegal transportation of alcohol and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Indiana and North at 2:25 a.m.

Nov. 13 Gustavo Huizar Guzman, 27, of Arlington Heights, was charged with DUI, speeding and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and I-290 at 2:01 a.m.

James Van Petten, 45, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, speeding and disobeying a stop sign subsequent to a traffic stop near Park and Huntington at 12:47 a.m.

Michael T. Rosario, 36, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, failure to signal, no front plate registration, possession of cannabis in a vehicle and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Villa and North at 4:05 a.m.

Harassment, threats

Nov. 10 Police said a reporting officer in the 700

CALL 800-222-TIPS block of N. York met with the victim at 10:14 a.m. who stated he met an unknown female on a dating platform and exchanged explicit photos. The unknown suspect then stated the photos would be sent to the victim’s friends and family if he does not send money. The victim purchased gift cards and provided the numbers to the suspect.

Nov. 7-Nov. 10 A complainant in the 700 block of Cambridge told police that she has received several unwanted messages from a suspect between the above dates and would like the suspect to cease all communication. An investigation is pending.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Nov. 14 Police said officers responded for the report of a retail theft that just occurred at a store in the 100 block of W. North at 4:18 a.m. The alleged suspects were located inside of their vehicle and eight bottles of alcohol were recovered, according to police. Darryl S. Fleming, 52, of Berwyn, was found to be in possession of crack cocaine, police said.

Fleming was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and retail theft.

Jemar Burt, 33, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft.

Dery E. Cathey, 25, of Elmhurst, was charged with no valid registration and unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Pick at 10:49 a.m.

Nov. 13 Anita L. Henry, 25, of Maywood, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in a vehicle in the 300 block of N. Route 83 at 11:56 p.m.

Nov. 12 Gisell Cabral, 20, of Villa Park, was issued a citation for possession of adult use cannabis in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near Villa and Thomas at 11:06 a.m.

Travon Jones, 21, of Chicago, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver, no valid driver’s license and improper lighting subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Indiana at 11:58 p.m.

Anthony Knight, 47, of Berkeley, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance in the 1000 block of S. York at 2:05 p.m. Police said Knight was found to be in possession of fentanyl.

Theft or burglary/identity theft/ fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery Nov. 16 Theft by deception was reported in the

100 block of Prospect at 10:11 p.m. A victim told police that she received a message on her social media account inquiring if she would like to make money by using a money service application. The victim provided an unknown suspect with her driver’s license information, access to her social media accounts, and sent funds as a processing fee.

Identity theft was reported in the 300 block of Elm at 11:32 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used his personal information to re-open his closed PayPal account. The account showed recent activity.

The victim contacted PayPal and the account was permanently closed. The victim did not sustain any financial loss.

Suspect arrested after allegedly spitting on store employee

On Tuesday, Nov. 9, Elmhurst Police were notified of an incident which had occurred at 148 N. York Street at approximately 6:30 p.m.

A 17- year-old employee of the business reported to police that an adult male had entered the store without wearing a face mask and when he was asked to put a mask on, allegedly used vulgar language directed at the employee and left the store.

A short time later, this individual sent a family member into the business to make a purchase. The suspect then re-entered the store and allegedly told the employee he had spit on the cash his family member provided as payment. The suspect then allegedly spit at the employee, with a small portion of the saliva striking the employee in his face. The suspect then left the store. A manager of the business

and the victim contacted the Elmhurst Police later that night to report the incident.

Video surveillance was reviewed and a subsequent investigation led to the identification of the suspect, Sean P. Connell, 53, of the 19W200 block of Williamsburg Court in Oak Brook. On Thursday, Nov. 18, an arrest warrant was obtained for Connell on misdemeanor charges of Battery and Disorderly Conduct. Bond was set at $1,000 – 10% applies.

On Thursday, Nov. 18, Connell surrendered himself at the Elmhurst Police Department and posted the required cash bond. Connell was released with a court date of Monday, Dec. 20, at the DuPage County Judicial Center in Wheaton.

Public discussion supports teachers The meeting’s public-participation segment included comments from 13 people. Most of the commenters spoke in support of the district’s teachers.

Some of the commenters stated that the district’s teachers had been subjected to inappropriate public criticism. Some of the comments referred to recent criticism of some school curriculums. A few of the commenters urged the board to issue a public statement in support of teachers.

Discussion of KPIs ensues The board meeting also included a report regarding various Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and how District 205 fares in those indicators with other comparable districts, including Barrington District 220, Batavia District 101, Naperville District 203, Indian Prairie District 204, St. Charles District 303 and Wheaton District 200. The indicators discussed included: eighthgrade passing algebra, ninth-grade on-track, early college coursework and graduation rates. According to information provided by District 205, the district’s eighth-grade passing algebra figure stood at 53 percent in 2019, 54 percent in 220 and 45 percent in 2021.

A variety of indicators dropped during the 2020-21 school year, which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Across Illinois, 20 percent of students were reportedly chronically absent during the 2020-21 school year, missing 10 percent or more of the school year (with or without a valid excuse).

The figure of 20 percent of students who were chronically absent during the 2020-21 school year represented a 21-percent increase over 2019.

The percentage of ninth-grade students on track in District 205 reportedly stood at 95 percent in 2019, 96 percent in 2020 and 97 percent in 2021.

The graduation rate in District 205 was 95 percent in 2019, 95 percent in 2020 and 94 percent in 2021.

In addition to reporting about Key Performance Indicators, District 205 administrators discussed the district’s current School Improvement Plans (SIPs). That discussion noted that each

The presentation about Key Performance Indicators and School Improvement Plans included a short video featuring comments from a few district students, who responded to questions asking about the differences between the 2020-21 school year and the current 2021-22 school year. The students also spoke about what they are now working on in their classes, and what is working well for them during the current school year.

Construction updates optimistic Todd Schmidt, the district’s director of buildings and grounds, gave a brief update on two ongoing projects and spoke about some upcoming projects scheduled to start in the spring of 2022. Schmidt said the current project to build the new Lincoln Elementary School is moving along nicely.

Schmidt said the construction of the new school is on schedule. The new Lincoln School should be ready to open in August 2022.

The project to install synthetic turf on the field in front of York High School is also progressing, said Schmidt. The field in front of York High School sits above underground stormwater storage vaults that were recently installed by the City of Elmhurst. Schmidt noted during the Nov. 16 meeting that the turf had been put in place and was being stitched together.

The sand and pellets that will be part of the synthetic field had also been delivered, Schmidt said.

Speaking about upcoming projects, Schmidt told the board about recent bids for upcoming renovation and addition work at Jackson Elementary School. He said all of the lowest bids were over the district’s anticipated budget. He said the district and its contractor are evaluating those bids.

205 Bridges Transition Center. The center is located at 407 W. St. Charles Road, near York High School. The district purchased the property, formerly known as The Abbey, from the Elmhurst Park District. One night before the Nov. 16 board meeting, the district held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the renovated facility for individuals with disabilities. The district’s rules require the board to approve the naming of district buildings.

School calendar updated Board members voted 4-1 to approve the district’s updated 2022-23 school calendar. The update calls for changing Nov. 8, 2022, which is Election Day, from a school attendance day to a school holiday. Friday, April 7, 2023, which is Good Friday, will change from a non-attendance day to an attendance day. The last day of the 2022-23 school year will remain May 26, 2023.

The update was reportedly made because the State of Illinois designated Election Day 2022 as a legal holiday.

That designation of Election Day as a legal holiday is reportedly only in effect for Nov. 8, 2022.

Board president Kara Caforio voted against the update to the district’s 2022-23 school calendar. She said she understood the update but felt there were other available options.

Campbell offers COVID-19 outlook District 205 Superintendent Keisha Campbell provided a brief update regarding COVID-19 metrics and policies. Campbell noted that shortly before the start of the current school year, the board endorsed a plan to institute a mask-optional policy in its schools.

Campbell stated that Gov. JB Pritzker’s Aug. 4 order mandating masks in schools and other indoor settings superseded District 205’s ability to offer

Campbell noted a variety of differences from the 2020-21 school year to the current 2021-22 school year. She stated that about 10 percent of the district’s students never attended school in person during the 2020-21 school year.

A significant portion of that school year featured exclusively remote instruction. While some students returned to in-person learning during the 2020-21 school year, others chose to remain in remote instruction.

Additionally, Campbell referred to athletic seasons, several of which were shortened or canceled during the 2020-21 school year. Additionally, spectator attendance was either limited or banned during some activities in the 2020-21 school year. IHSA sports are offering full athletic seasons during the current school year, and there are currently no spectator limits at York High School athletic events.

Campbell and board members referred to more than 5,000 incidents of district students quarantining during the 2020-21 school year due to close-contact policies related to COVID-19.

Those incidents have dropped dramatically during the current school year.

Board member Courtenae Trautmann said morale in the district’s school buildings is remarkable. Board member Athena Arvanitis referred to enthusiasm in District 205 schools, which she said has been regained.

School Board Members Day Campbell mentioned that Nov. 15— the day before the board meeting—was Illinois School Board Members Day. She thanked the District 205 Board members for their service and noted that they serve, without pay, in an often thankless position. According to the

Top crime news Traffic stop nets cannabis, pills, four firearms, multiple checks, debit cards On Nov. 16, police said officers responded to a report of subjects who appeared to be tampering with a bank’s ATM near West and St. Charles at 8:10 p.m. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, Alfred Scott, 24, of Burnham, Ill., was found to have a warrant issued by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and admitted to having cannabis inside of the vehicle, police said. According to police, a consent search of the vehicle yielded four firearms (two of which were found to be stolen), several pills of a controlled substance, cannabis, and multiple checks and debit cards with different names on them. The subjects were taken into custody and transported to the police station. Scott was charged with four counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a machine gun and possession of cannabis by a driver. Police said Jamonte Sawyer, 21, of Chicago, provided the officer with a false name and was found to have a warrant from the Chicago Police Department. Sawyer was charged with obstructing identification. Three other subjects were released without charges.

Mazzochi sums up Springfield: political insiders remain out of touch A government operating on the principle of by the people, for the people, means we are citizens, not subjects. Government exists by our consent, following due process of law. It is supposed to deliver quality of life fundamentals: safe streets; good schools; jobs and opportunity.

In Illinois we see partisan political Democrats, from the Governor on down, repeatedly ignore this approach, to predictably bad results.

This past decade, Illinois was 1 of only 3 states losing population. We are experiencing runaway inflation.

Food, utility and fuel prices are way up. We also see another kind of inflation in crime. We worry our local schools have put politics ahead of education, failing to meet the needs of our students.

When the Democrat legislature reconvened last month, did they focus on your priorities? No. Springfield Democrats governed for their own best interests, not yours.

Rather than fair elections and maps, we got more Democrat gerrymandering to protect political insiders’ privilege and power.

Instead of protecting the integrity of our existing election systems, they filed bills to give convicted criminals the right to vote in prison, a violation of the Illinois Constitution.

And don’t expect help for the skyrocketing winter home-heating bills starting to arrive in mailboxes. The true cost of the Democrats “green” policies are going to hit lower income families, fixed-income seniors, and working class households the hardest.

Democrats won’t touch Governor Pritkzer’s failures at the state veteran’s facilities—where shoddy practices led to an explosive COVID-19 outbreak that killed over 30 veterans in the LaSalle facility. Even though an Inspector General finding in April 2021 showed that a contributing factor to this disaster was

the Governor’s failure to fill a key medical supervisor role, Pritzker still hasn’t filled the position over a year after these preventable deaths took place.

As for COVID, where other states are actually following the science, and being flexible based on local conditions, Governor Pritzker keeps his statewide emergency rules and constraints in place, irrespective of whether you already had COVID, got vaccinated, or possess natural immunity; and whether you are work at home alone, or in an at-risk congregate care facility; whether you are a public school or private. His rules are for everyone, regardless of science or context, unless you are in a state government union—since Pritzker needs those votes.

The Democratic legislature has done nothing to restore the health care rights that Governor Pritzker took from you; instead, they voted to strengthen his unaccountable power, stripping your rights of conscience to object to medical treatment and procedures if it involves COVID-19.

On abortion, Democrats have gone from safe, legal, and rare; to stripping parents of their right to be notified that their underage daughter is having one. That proved sufficiently extreme that even some Democrats refused to vote for it.

Thus, it is no wonder that ordinary people feel more out of balance and out of touch with their government, and that the institutions they count on are failing.

After Mike Madigan’s ouster, Democrats promised the days of self-dealing, corruption and incompetence would end. Sadly, with one-party Democratic rule, Springfield politics continues to be one where the only ones who count are the insiders—not you.

Another angle on forgiveness Earlier this year, I wrote about forgiveness.

Forgiveness gets a lot of brain time in forgiveness circles. Many believe that before we can move forward, we need to forgive. That wasn’t the topic of my previous column.

I didn’t write about our need to forgive others. Quite the opposite. In my humble opinion we don’t have the duty or obligation to forgive others.

That end of forgiveness only bogs us down.

If we are fretting about whether or not to forgive someone then we are ignoring our own need for growth— except in one critical circumstance which involves offering not only forgiveness, but grace, to the one person we often judge most harshly: ourself.

I’ve struggled with this quite a bit in the last year. I think it’s probably natural when you walked beside someone during a terrible and fatal

Two local students honored with ‘Yes I Can’ awards Two District 205 students were honored with “Yes I Can” awards from the Illinois Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), which recognizes children and youth with exceptionalities who have demonstrated their determination and achievements in multiple ways.

The awards were presented at the recent CEC Convention, held virtually. Paul Rosland, a student at the newly opened District 205 Bridges Transition Center, was nominated because of his leadership skills and advocacy for transition services. He was honored under the Transition category.

Franco Bibbiano, a freshman at York was honored under the School Achievement category and recognized for his industrial technology and woodworking skills.

“Every student has a story and the stories of our ‘Yes I Can award’ winners demonstrate a commitment to persevere and to go above and beyond each day,” said Dr. Kevin Rubenstein, assistant superintendent of student services.

“We could not be prouder of these students and what they have contributed to our district and to this community.”

The purpose of the award is to encourage individuals to seek their highest potential and to increase public awareness of the abilities, aspirations, and personal qualities of those with exceptionalities. Holiday shoppers alienated with the traditional bedlam of Black Friday should support Small Business Saturday by shopping locally on November 27—whether done in person or online.

Since its 2010 inception by American Express, Small Business Saturday has generated an estimated $133 billion in consumer spending.

In 2020—the program’s 11th Anniversary year—an estimated 110 million consumers shopped and/or dined on Small Business Saturday, generating a record $19.8 billion in spending, an increase of $200 million from 2019, according to the Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey.

Survey responses for 2020 indicated that 97 percent of consumers who shopped or dined on Small Business Saturday agree that small businesses are essential to their community. Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic, a record 56 percent of consumers reported shopping online with small businesses on that day. Some 43 percent of consumers shopped at small businesses offering specials or promotions.

Today, small businesses account for some 31.7 million U.S. businesses (one million minority-owned and 1.1 million women owned), which employ 47.1 percent of those working in the private sector and create two out of every three new jobs.

For many communities, sales taxes account for a municipality’s largest source of budget revenue, often offsetting any need for a property tax increase. Home-rule municipalities like Elmhurst benefit even more from local taxes on food and beverage, retail, motor fuel, etc.

More importantly, 68% of every $1 spent at a local small business stays in the community, as compared to 44% from a big box retailer.

Thanksgiving dinner cost rises with inflation, other factors

Thanksgiving dinner is expected to cost 14 percent more this year, with higher turkey prices pulling up that percentage.

American Farm Bureau Federation’s 36th annual survey indicates the average cost of this year’s feast for 10 is still affordable at $53.31— or less than $6 per person. This is a $6.41 or 14 percent increase from last year’s average of $46.90.

The centerpiece on most Thanksgiving tables—the turkey—costs more than last year, at $23.99 for a 16-pound bird. That’s roughly $1.50 per pound, up 24 percent from last year, but there are several mitigating factors.

Farm Bureau volunteer shoppers checked prices Oct. 26 to Nov. 8, about two weeks before most grocery store chains began featuring whole frozen turkeys at sharply lower prices. So consumers shopping now for turkeys likely can find better prices.

All the items surveyed saw price jumps from last year—except stuffing—which trends with rising inflation for all goods. Taking turkey out of the basket of foods reveals a 6.6 percent price increase compared to last year, which tracks closely with the Consumer Price Index for food and general inflation across the economy.

“Several factors contributed to the increase in average cost of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner,”

AFBF Senior Economist Veronica Nigh said. “These include dramatic disruptions to the U.S. economy and supply chains over the last 20 months; inflationary pressure throughout the economy; difficulty in predicting demand during the COVID-19 pandemic and high global demand for food, particularly meat,” she said. Further, “The trend of consumers cooking and eating at home more often due to the pandemic led to increased supermarket demand and higher retail food prices in 2020 and 2021, compared to pre-pandemic prices in 2019.”

Illinois Farm Bureau members participated as shoppers for the survey. In Illinois, prices are slightly higher than the national average, with the cost of a Thanksgiving feast for 10 coming in at $58.15, a $4.84 or 8percent increase from the national average.

“As the element of inflation comes into play, consumers can still rest assured that there are bargains to be found in their local grocery stores,” Illinois Farm Bureau President Richard Guebert Jr. said. “The food supply is strong, steady and plentiful as Illinois farmers work tirelessly year-round to produce affordable products.”

The shopping list for Farm Bureau’s informal survey includes turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a veggie tray, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and coffee and milk, all in quantities sufficient to serve a fam-

ily of 10 with plenty for leftovers.

In recognition of changes in Thanksgiving dinner traditions, the Farm Bureau price survey also includes ham, Russet potatoes and frozen green beans in an expanded holiday menu. Adding these foods to the classic Thanksgiving menu increased the overall cost by $15.41, to $68.72. This updated basket of foods also increased in price (up 14percent) compared to 2020.

Bond set for each of two accused of burglarizing Oak Brook home On Wednesday, Nov. 17, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Oak Brook Chief of Police James Kruger announced that bond had been set for two Chicago men accused of burglarizing an Oak Brook residence. Peter Miller, 33, and Michael Miller, 25, both appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge John Kinsella set bond at $300,000 with 10% to apply for Peter Miller and $250,000 with 10% to apply for Michael Miller.

Both men have been charged with one count of Residential Burglary (Class 1 Felony).

On Monday, Nov. 15, at approximately 6:38 p.m., through the course of ongoing investigations into more than two dozen forced-entry residential burglaries to single family homes, the NORTAF Burglary Task Force (North Regional Major Crime Task Force) identified a suspicious vehicle parked outside an Oak Brook home located on Windsor Drive for approximately six minutes. ICCP tries to hold out but ultimately loses semi-final The IC Catholic Prep football team faced the Byron Tigers in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A playoff semifinal game at Plunkett Athletic Complex. The Knights held a 14-0 lead at halftime, and at the end of the third quarter. The Tigers scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes to beat IC Catholic Prep 15-14. Byron scored its first touchdown with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter. The Tigers made the extra-point kick to cut the Knights’ lead to 14-7. Byron then recovered the ensuing onside kick and drove for another touchdown.

The Tigers scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 5.1 seconds to play to cut the Knights’ lead to 1413. Byron then tried and converted a two-point conversion run to take a 15-14 lead.

Byron improved to 13-0 and advanced to this Friday’s Class 3A state championship game against Tolono’s Unity High School (also 13-0) at Northern Illinois University’s Huskie Stadium.

IC Catholic Prep finished the season with an 11-2 record. See page 23 for more on the game.

So why does IC Catholic Prep enjoy sustained success on the football field?

“Our coach (Bill Krefft),” he said.

“He presents the scheme and we work on it and work on it and don’t settle for less. The coaching staff knows what it is doing. To me, it’s the best coaching staff I have ever had.”

Mims would like to play football and wrestle in college. “That’s possible,” he said, noting he’s looking into several schools in the state right now. He would like to study sports management with the goal of being an athletic director at a high school.

Mims said his time at IC Catholic Prep has been productive in and out

of the athletic arena.

“I like that the school is small,” he said. “It’s like a family. When you go to school, it’s not just the football players who are a family. The whole school feels like family. We want to see each other succeed. Nobody wants to bring anybody down. We are all in it together. On the football team, we are hungry. We got closer as a team this year. We look at each other as brothers and we have each other’s back. I love the bond on the team.”

Heading into the state semifinal against Byron, Mims had 108 tackles and 16 tackles for loss to go with two interceptions, six caused fumbles and 12 pass deflections. He carried the ball nine times for 48 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns.

The riches of a successful season continue to emerge for the York football team.

Standout senior linebacker Jeff Coglianese was recently named to the Illinois High School Football

Coaches Association Class 8A allstate team, a major honor.

“It’s pretty cool,” Coglianese said.

“I never thought it would happen.

It shows that hard work does pay off. Working hard all through this COVID season and finally getting to play and that happening is pretty

nice.”

Coglianese, a 5-foot-11 inch, 195-pound middle linebacker, helped York to an 8-2 season, which included the team’s first playoff appearance since 2011.

would like to play football in college and has visited several schools.

Looking back, Coglianese said this past season was one heck of a ride.

“We had a lot of people returning from the previous season in the spring, so we had a lot of starters with experience at this level. Pretty much our entire offensive line was back and some of the defensive line,” he said. “It was another year to show what we know. We had a lot of fun.

It was fantastic. The best time was walking off the field at Glenbard West after we beat them. I wish we could have made it a little further in the playoffs. But we made it a lot further than we have in a long time. This team was great. We do a thing in the summer where we go away to camp for three days at Olivet Nazarene.

The relationships that were made with the entire team, that is probably going to stick with me forever.”

And Coglianese said York is set up for continued future success on the gridiron.

“Everyone that I know at York from the freshmen and sophomore levels, they will all be pretty good,” he said. “They are set in and want to do the same thing we did and go even further.”

“I have gotten better at being able to read and fill gaps,” he said. “I have been practicing as a linebacker my entire career. I have learned a lot even this last year. The seniors who graduated before me also taught me a lot. I would say I have gotten a lot smarter with my decisions in terms of what to do and whether to fill or to go out and pass read.”

Coglianese said his love of the linebacking position is two-fold. “I like being able to see everything that is happening on the field and be able to get in on runs right away,” he said.

His advice to a young linebacker learning the craft?

“I would say size doesn’t matter,” he said. “You can do whatever you want as long as you put your mind to it and put in the work and get in the weight room as well.”

Coglianese got the football bug after a friend got him involved in flag football.

“I learned to love football and have kept playing,” said Coglianese, a product of the local Elmhurst Eagles youth football program. “I have never stopped.”

Coglianese, who also plays lacrosse and previously wrestled,

Pedal Power deemed successful

On Saturday, Nov. 13, “Pedal Power” hosted its annual charity collection of gently-used, working bicycles at the former Stemples Cycle Center location at 494 Spring Road. The Elmhurst effort brought in 185 bikes which will go to many deserving kids who have never had a bike. In addition to Elmhurst, Pedal Power held collections at eight other sites throughout the Chicago area.
