The Elmhurst Princesses nonprofit organization, which promotes strong bonds between fathers and daughters through shared activities, recently conducted a food drive for the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry.

In addition to collecting and donating a variety of needed food items that totaled about 900 pounds, Elmhurst Princesses fathers and daughters helped Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry staff members sort and organize donated food items for local families in need. This year’s food drive was spearheaded by former Elmhurst Princesses Salt Creek Nation

Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley kicked off the afternoon by reading a mayoral proclamation that declared Saturday, Nov. 18 “Elmhurst Princess Day” in the city.

The Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry, which one staff member noted already has helped more than 600 local households in need this month, serves the towns of Addison, Bensenville, Berkeley, Elmhurst, Hillside, Lombard, Oak Brook and Villa Park. The food pantry noted during this giving season it is seeing the highest demand from people in need in the community in its 34-year history.

Thomas Paul’s 40th year in ministry The Immaculate Conception Parish community celebrated the 40th anniversary of the ordination of Very Reverend Thomas Paul, V.F. on Sunday, November 5th. The Very Reverend William DiSalvo, V.F., pastor of St. Isaac Jogues in Hinsdale and a longtime friend of Fr. Tom Paul, was asked to give the homily.

Also in attendance was Bishop Joseph M. Siegel, former Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet and the newly appointed Bishop of Evansville, Indiana, as well as several priests, deacons, and seminarians

Local resident, Chicago firefighter, movie advisor dies at 77 Don Rimgale helped De Niro prepare for role in ‘Backdraft’

An Elmhurst resident who had a brush with fame has passed away.

Don Rimgale, who served as an advisor to Robert De Niro for the movie “Backdraft,” died of cancer on Monday, Nov. 13, at his Elmhurst home.

He was 77.

After growing up on the south side of Chicago, Rimgale spent 31 years with the Chicago Fire Department.

When the movie “Backdraft” was in the works, Rimgale was asked to work with the famous actor to prepare him for his role as a firefighter.

One thing he did was to take De Niro to the county morgue to see actual victims of fires.

The entire time, De Niro followed him around with a tape recorder.

Rimgale even got a few lines in the movie.

De Niro called the Rimgale family on Monday to offer his condolences.

Highly regarded by his firefighter peers, Rimgale was involved in the 1993 fire at the Paxton Hotel in Chicago, which claimed 20 victims. He worked for days to help find bodies among the rubble.

After retiring from the Chicago Fire Department, Rimgale became Fire Chief of the Sandwich Department. He retired in 2016.

Rimgale enjoyed golf, the Blackhawks and the Green Bay Packers.

According to his daughter, Vince Lombardi was his hero.

Rimgale is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughters Rachel, Becky Mannarelli and Roxanne Gardner; sons Donn Jr., Robert and Timothy; brothers Ron and Adam; a sister, Barbara; and five grandchildren. His son Daniel died of leukemia at age 6.

Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25 at the Sandwich Fire Department, 310 Railroad St., followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m.

About a month ago, the City of Elmhurst announced it had received a $10 million grant toward the construction of a new train station in downtown.

The Elmhurst Park District Board held a regular meeting on Nov. 13 at the district’s administrative office at 375 W. First Street. Commissioner Doug Ennis was absent from the meeting. There were no public comments.

Garden Club presents $3,000 from Walk and Faire The Elmhurst Garden Club presented a $3,000 check to the park district at the beginning of the meeting. The money came from funds generated by the club’s 2017 Elmhurst Garden Walk and Faire, which took place in July.

The money will be used for plantings at park signs throughout the district, as well as providing disadvantaged families an opportunity to take part in recreational programs.

District’s medical insurance contract renewed Board members voted unanimously to approve the consent agenda for the meeting. That consent agenda included the authorization of a renewal contract for 2018 for group medical insurance with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois’ Blue Directions Program. The 2018 insurance plan’s projected cost to the district is $1,030,800. The renewal reflects an overall increase of about 4.23 percent, or about $40,000. Those increased renewal costs will be passed on to the district’s employees.

The approved consent agenda also authorized a renewal contract with Delta Dental for employee dental coverage for 2018 in the amount of about $80,000. The park district has had a contract with Delta since 2009.

In 2018, contribution rates by the district will remain at the same level as 2017—about $53,000.

Budget talks begin; staff, personnel takes lion’s share The 2018 budget presentation took up a majority of the meeting, which lasted over three hours. District staff members provided the board with details about the proposed budget. Elmhurst Park District Executive Direc-

tor Jim Rogers noted that the annual budget forms public policy, controls spending and serves as a written financial plan for the upcoming year.

Rogers said the proposed 2018 budget features a 2.4 percent increase in operational revenues and a 3.3 increase in spending. He said the proposed budget reflects an operating surplus of over $300,000, which will be reinvested in the district.

The proposed budget calls for total revenues of about $21 million, with total operating expenses of nearly $20.7 million. A cash and investment spend down of about $2.4 million yields total expenditures of about $23.1 million.

This 2018 budget will be the first year in which the district’s annual budget reflects the Vision 2020 process.

Vision 2020 is the district’s current comprehensive and strategic plan. The combined plan was updated in 2016 and 2017.

Rogers noted that property tax revenue accounts for about 40 percent of the district’s budgeted revenues. The equalized assessed value (EAV) of property within the district increased last year by 8.6 percent, and by 13.2 percent in the prior year. Those increases over the past two years took place after five straight years of declining values.

According to information provided by the district, for the 2017 tax levy, it’s projected that a home’s assessed value will increase by 7 percent from the prior year. A homeowner with a home valued at $400,000 for the 2016 levy would have a property with a new estimated value of $428,000 and pay about $468 in property taxes to the district, up from $452 in the 2016 levy.

Rogers added that staffing and personnel is the biggest driver in the budget. As a percentage of the budget, personnel costs will take up 54 percent of expenses, up from 53 percent in 2017.

At the end of the staff presentation, Rogers described the budget as fiscally responsible and responsive to residents’ needs. He recommended the board approve the budget. The board will continue to discuss the proposed budget at its next meeting on Nov. 27.

The board is expected to vote to approve the budget at its Dec. 11 meeting.

Survey said The meeting included a presentation of findings from a recent telephone survey of 301 district residents. Strategies 360 conducted the survey between Oct. 16 and Oct. 25. Surveyors contacted a combination of landlines and mobile phones. The survey’s margin of error was reportedly plus or minus 5.7 percent. Surveyors randomly called phone numbers in the district and did not use a predetermined list featuring only families with a child in a district school.

According to the survey, about 85 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with the quality of education that children in the district receive.

About 57 percent of respondents said property taxes were too high. About 41 percent of those respondents said property taxes were much too high.

Approximately 81 percent of respondents stated they would support offering access to all-day kindergarten to all incoming students. By a 3 to 1 margin, respondents favored introducing access to all-day kindergarten at neighborhood schools instead of a central location.

When asked how they typically receive news and information about schools in the district, 31 percent said they received it through a friend or neighbor, while 25 percent received it through the Elmhurst Independent.

Presentation on proposed changes at middle schools Mary Henderson-Baum, the district’s assistant superintendent of learning and teaching, gave a presentation during the meeting regarding middle school curriculum and schedule adjustments for the 2018-19 school year.

The goal of the proposed changes is reportedly to shorten the middle school day for students in band, orchestra and/ or choir, while expanding choices and options for all students. Band, orchestra and/or choir would be incorporated into the school day, while still allowing students to participate in two of the three options. The adjustment also calls for making physical education mandatory only if a student is not in interscholastic or extracurricular athletic programs.

Battery

Nov. 10 A victim at a retirement facility in the 400 block of W. Butterfield told police at around 3:36 p.m. that she was battered by a fellow employee due to a disagreement over a work assignment. The reporting officer spoke to the suspect who denied battering the victim, stating she had been a victim of a battery. No witnesses were located and no arrests were made due to conflicting statements.

Nov. 9 Damage to property was reported near Route 83 and the Canadian National Railroad tracks at around 1:08 p.m. A victim told police that while driving his van, a rock fell down from the tracks and struck his windshield, leaving a golf ball sized crack.

Disorderly conduct

Nov. 15 Michael G. Thomas, 36, of Oak Park, was charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of resisting arrest at a business in the 100 block of W. Butterfield at around 11:28 a.m. Police said Thomas was causing a disturbance in the parking lot, and was yelling toward the building. Upon an officer’s arrival, Thomas was screaming and jumping up and down, according to police, and was uncooperative with officers and addressed them using numerous vulgarities. Thomas was released at the scene without charges, but at around 1:16 p.m., officers were dispatched to Kent Avenue and Butterfield Road, where police said Thomas was causing another disturbance. Thomas would not follow officer’s orders, according to police, and was placed under arrest.

A victim at a restaurant in the 100 block of E. Butterfield told police at around 11:10 a.m. that while at the restaurant, a suspect ordered food and sat down. After about an hour, the suspect got up and started rearranging the furniture at which time the victim asked if he was okay. The suspect immediately started screaming, cursing, and throwing his food on the floor, according to police. The victim did not want to sign complaints and the suspect left the business on foot before a reporting officer arrived.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Nov. 9 Police said officers responded to an incident in the 100 block of E. Crescent at around 9:04 p.m. Upon arrival, Suspect 1stated that she was involved in a fight with her friend, Suspect 2, and threw her Crock Pot, causing it to shatter. Both parties declined to sign complaints against each other.

Nov. 14 Matthew Britton, 22, of Melrose Park, was charged with DUI and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Diversey at around 4:31 p.m.

Crystal Rogers, 30, of Chicago, was charged with DUI and no valid driver’s license subsequent to a report of a driver slumped behind the wheel in the 100 block of E. North at around 1:20 a.m.

Nov. 11 Harrison Rose, 23, of Oak Brook, was charged with DUI, expired registration and no insurance in the 500 block of S. York at around 12:16 a.m.

Nov. 9 Tyler R. Nelson, 25, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI and issued a citation for no valid city sticker subsequent to a person following an erratic driver in the 900 block of S. York at around 7:40 p.m.

Endangering the life of a child

Nov. 15

Angela Wolski, 49, of Elmhurst, was charged with endangering the life of a child in the 200 block of E. Park at around 7:38 p.m.

Police said the victim was at Wolski’s home as a guest, and Wolski observed the victim with a bottle of alcohol but did not take it from him According to police, the victim was later found unconscious and Wolski did not call 911, but had someone contact his family to come get him. Upon arrival, the victim’s family called 911.

Harassment, threats

Nov. 8-Nov. 10 A victim told police that a suspect had previously gained access to her social media accounts and was currently harassing her through electronic communications between the above dates. Information was forwarded to a school resource officer who will attempt to contact the suspect.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Nov. 15 Jeremy Bellen, 33, of Elk Grove Village, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and the CNRR at around 4:53 a.m.

Nov. 14 David P. Boyer, 36, of Darien, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license suspended, expired registration and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Walnut at around 4:52 p.m.

Scott Reemtsma, 20, of Westmont, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and tinted windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Riverside at around 12:46 a.m.

A victim in the 200 block of N. Indiana told police at around 8:54 p.m. that she received an email notification from FedEx advising they had delivered a package to her front door. She arrived home at around 7 p.m. and the package was not there.

Nov. 11 Juan Cuevas, 18, of Franklin Park, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to investigating a suspicious vehicle in the 100 block of N. Addison at around 9:55 p.m.

Nov. 10 Alvaro Arzate, 20, of Northlake and Olivia Allan, 18, of Elmhurst, were issued citations for possession of cannabis subsequent to a suspicious vehicle that was parked near a business in the 600 block of W. North at around 10:42 p.m.

Jesus Pouchoulenher, 18, of Berwyn, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and no car insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Brush Hill at around 7:43 p.m.

Nov. 9 Ahmod Bruce, 33, of Atlanta, Ga., was issued a citation for possession of cannabis near Commonwealth and Butterfield at around 12:39 a.m. Police said a reporting officer observed Bruce asleep behind the wheel at the above location; an odor of cannabis was detected and cannabis was located.

Nicholas Kozikowski, 18, of Chicago, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a traffic stop near Grand and York at around 1:25 a.m.

Suspicious circumstances

Nov. 12 A complainant in the 100 block of E. Schiller told police that she called for a Lyft driver, but the driver who arrived did not appear as the driver’s photo that was sent from the Lyft app.

This made her uncomfortable. The driver then asked her to get out of the vehicle. Although she did not use the service, the complainant was concerned she will be charged for the ride.

Both the driver and passenger decided to cancel the ride and no charges were incurred.

Nov. 15 The owner and officer manager of an auto import dealership in the 800 block of N. York told police at around 12:30 p.m. that they were notified by a detective with the Geneva Police Department that numerous documents containing personal identifying information of customers were located during the execution of a search warrant at a residence in Bartlett.

An investigation is pending.

Nov. 14 The liquor manager at a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller told police they observed a suspect described as a white male in his late 30s, approximately 5’11” and 180 pounds, medium build and wearing a tan hooded sweatshirt, a red shirt, black pants and red shoes, left the store without paying for energy drinks and laundry detergent. The suspect eventually left the shopping cart in the parking lot and fled the area in a red pickup truck, according to police.

March 1-Nov. 14 A victim in the 100 block of E. Schiller St. told police that her license plate sticker is missing and she believes someone stole it between the above dates. The sticker was entered into LEADS/NCIC.

Nov. 13 Prezemyslaw J. Herba, 34, of Bensenville, was charged with retail theft at a food store in the 600 block of N. York at around 1:20 p.m.

Police said Herba attempted to leave the store with unpaid merchandise.

Nov. 11-Nov. 13 A victim at a car dealership in the 300 block of W. Grand told police that an unknown suspect took a wheel and tire from a 2017 Honda Civic which was in the dealership’s lot between the above dates.

Nov. 10 Kathleen Mackey, 35, of Bensenville, was charged with felony retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 8:49 p.m.

A complainant at a moving company in the 900 block of S. Route 83 told police at around 10:18 a.m. that he believes an employee is using a company credit card and has purchased gas for her personal vehicle over the course of two months. The case is pending investigation.

Police said officers were contacted by a car dealership in the 700 block of W. Grand at around 3:13 p.m. about an unknown person trying to use the identification of another person to purchase a vehicle. The unknown suspect left the dealership in a gray Nissan Sentra, according to police.

Hospital awards ‘Run of the Year’ to Elmhurst Fire Department Elmhurst Hospital has awarded its 2017 EMS (Emergency Medical Services) “Run of the Year” to members of the Elmhurst Fire Department.

Paramedics Danielle Fernandez and Sarah Hand, and Firefighters Patrick Evoy, Lt. Jeff Hayes, Gary Klecka and Tim Lisowski were recognized for their care in May of an 80-year-old man who fell while at church and was unresponsive.

When the crew arrived, bystanders were performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Paramedic Hand continued CPR and then Paramedic Fernandez delivered a shock from an Automated External Defibrillator, after which the patient was breathing and had a pulse. The paramedics provided additional treatment in the ambulance while on the way to Elmhurst Hospital’s Emergency Department. The patient was admitted to Elmhurst Hospital and released a few days later.

The “Run of the Year” recipients were honored at Elmhurst Hospital’s fifth annual EMS Recognition Dinner on October 26 at Pinstripes in Oak Brook. Other area EMS personnel and police officers were also honored at the event, which caps off the year-long “Run of the Month” program in which area first responders are recognized for exceptional care with a breakfast at their station.

Retail theft and attempted retail theft were reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York. A complainant told police that at around 11:55 a.m., a suspect described as a white male with black hair wearing a Bears jacket walked into the store, placed merchandise into a cart and walked out without paying. He and another suspect left southbound on York.

The suspect came back to the store at around 3:07 p.m. Loss prevention attempted to stop the suspect, who fled, got into the passenger side of a silver Nissan Pathfinder and fled southbound York from the store.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 7:40 p.m. Police said a suspect admitted to taking merchandise without paying. Allegedly located inside his vehicle were multiple pieces of tin foil with a residue on them. The suspect was released without charges pending lab results.

Deceptive practice was reported at a pet shop in the 600 block of N. York at around 2:58 p.m. A complainant advised that two suspects described as black males tried to buy an item using a counterfeit $20 bill. When the bill was rejected, the suspects reportedly took the bill and left southbound on York. One of the suspects was described as being between 18 and 21 years old, 5’6”, 160 pounds with a shaved head and wearing a black T-shirt with jeans.

The second suspect was described as also being around the same age, height and weight as the first suspect, with shoulder length dreadlocks

and wearing a black zip-up hooded sweatshirt, and a black T-shirt with jeans. The area was checked with no results.

Oct. 29 Identity theft was reported at Walcott Court at around 4:01 p.m. While checking her credit score, a victim told police that she noticed an inquiry from Verizon Wireless. The victim contacted Verizon and as advised that an unknown suspect(s) attempted to make a purchase through an online transaction.

Warrant arrest

Nov. 11 Police said that while an officer was on patrol in the 400 block of W. Lake St. at around 4:04 a.m., the officer observed a suspicious vehicle parked near a hotel near the location.

The officer made contact with the occupants and spoke to Vladislav Burda, 26, of Vernon Hills. Upon further investigation, it was learned Burda had an active warrant out of Sara-sota County, Fla., according to police.

He was charged with fugitive from justice.

Nov. 10 Police said Jason Harden, 35, of Chicago, was found to be wanted out of the DuPage County Sheriff’s office for a warrant subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Lake Street at around 12:14 a.m. Harden also was issued a citation for speeding.

Stick with the real issue, reader advises We all have heard the stories in the news, of sexual abuse against women.

It seems that each day, there is a new story, more women coming forward, speaking up and speaking out.

The good that has come of this is, of course, awareness that this is not okay.

The bad that has come of it is the debates on whose sexual abuse story is worse. There are comparisons.

For example, Franken’s story is not on the same level as Moore’s is. Isn’t abuse, abuse? I didn’t know we had different “levels,” that make one form of sexual abuse worse than another.

When we do that, we somehow make some sexual abuse okay, when it’s not okay.

We also invalidate the women speaking up, adding to the violation by violating her more.

Whistler’s memory saluted at Bluejays basketball game

On Wednesday, Nov. 15, the memory of long-time volunteer Darrell Whistler was honored at the home opener for the Elmhurst College Bluejays Men’s Basketball team. Among the honors were: a moment of silence in his memory; a special seat set aside just for Darrell; a special seating section for his friends and family; and Darrell’s favorite chocolate covered almonds were distributed to the fans in this special section. Darrell’s daughter, Denise Whistler Lucas and her husband Jim Lucas are seated behind Darrell’s special seat (center, behind the giant foam finger). The ‘Jays were down 8 points with less than two minutes remaining and pulled out a 6-point victory! Many thought Darrell had something to do with it!

Another bad thing that’s happened is, it’s being made political. Sexual abuse is what it is, whether you’re democrat or republican; so let’s not make excuses. Whether you’re Moore, Franken, Clinton, or Trump, sexual abuse is what it is. Making excuses, excuses the men and violates the woman further. It also detracts from the real issue, which is that, sexual abuse is wrong. There are no “levels” that makes one more okay than the other. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, so don’t diffuse it, by making it such.

If we could really just focus on the allegations, possibly doing something about them, making it loud and clear that this is unacceptable any time, any place, by anyone, then we might truly get somewhere.

Bellock teams up with USO for holiday donation drive State Representative Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale) reminds constituents that the last day to donate items for USO care packages to benefit the men and women of the U.S. military serving at home and abroad this holiday season is Monday, Nov. 27. IC Pastor Father Tom Paul began the celebration with a Thanksgiving blessing, then the students enjoyed turkey, potatoes, stuff-

ing, and all the trimmings.

After lunch, students visited different stations to participate in activities related to the time of the first Thanksgiving. At one station, the third graders decorated their own

wrapping paper and then wrapped socks to be sent to St. Mary’s Mission School in Red Lake, Minnesota. The school is located on an impoverished, closed Native American reservation.

Six educators, one team from District 205 earn ‘Those Who Excel’ awards Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 was well represented at the Illinois State Board of Education’s annual Those Who Excel Awards Banquet, held on October 28 in Bloomington-Normal.

A total of 250 honorees received recognition at the ISBE banquet on three levels – Recognition, Merit and Excellence – and across seven categories. District 205 was represented in each of those categories. Not all nominees are honored.

Six individual educators and one team received Awards of Merit and Awards of Recognition. Illinois Spinal Care celebrates ten years; announces expansion plans Illinois Spinal Care locally owned chiropractic care practice based in downtown Elmhurst, recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a week of festivities and giveaways for its clients and an announcement about its future.

Boys basketball team loaded with experience Knights excited about 2017-2018 prospects

IC Catholic Prep boys basketball coach TJ Tyrrell has plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

His Knights’ squad returns a host of veteran players from a 2016-2017 team that went 21-8 and shared the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division title with a 10-2 record. IC Catholic Prep won a Class 2A regional title and lost in the sectional to Chicago Orr, which went on to win the state title.

“We’re very excited about this group,” said Tyrrell. “We’re optimistic. We have a senior-dominated team that comes in with a winning mindset.”

The Knights did lose Luke Ricobene, who remains sidelined after injuring his knee during football season.

Also gone is Amari Reed, who transferred to nearby Fenton.

“Overall, the kids had a great summer,” said Tyrrell. “They play together, they buy into the system and at practice they are extremely focused and intense. They are ready to get started.”

Tyrrell didn’t hesitate to list off superlatives about a host of players on his team, starting with senior guard Kevin Cheng. “Kevin has put in a lot of work on his game,” the coach said.

“He was an all-conference player last year and we are looking for him to become one of our scoring leaders.

He’s worked on his jump shot and his strength to the basket. He’s much more confident on dribble-penetration.”

Also back is forward Alex Meurer. “Alex is extremely smart and has a high basketball IQ,” said Tyrrell.

“He’s an extremely good teammate.

He’ll guard our opponents’ best players. He does a little bit of everything in terms of knowing what place to be in and knocking down shots. He has a good shot and is an all-around player.”

Senior Nico Gaudio will play power forward. “Nico is probably undersized for the position he plays. He plays much bigger than he is,” said Tyrrell. “He’s gotten stronger and does a good job using his body to fin-

ish around the rim.”

Senior Kris Askew will be part of the Knights’ guard contingent. “Kris saw significant minutes last year and was one of our key scorers over the summer,” said Tyrrell. “He’s still playing football, but he will be one of our key guards in terms of what we do on offense and defense.”

A key addition to the team is senior Zen Tverdokhlib (center), who split the fall playing soccer and football (he kicks for the football team). “Zen grew five inches from his sophomore year,” said Tyrrell. “He didn’t make the team as a junior. He worked hard and came back this summer and was impressive. He has bought in and has a great ability to finish around the rim.

He has outstanding athleticism for his size. He’s very long and we feel like he will be a key piece to our success this year. Lately, he’s been part-time with kicking and coming to our practice.”

Two other key seniors are Pat Shannon (point guard) and Griffen Eichhorn (guard). “Pat put in a significant amount of time developing his game,” Tyrrell explained. “He’s a competitor.

I anticipate he will contribute at the point-guard position. He’s another player who makes good decisions and few mistakes. Griffen is a good, strong and physical player that brings a great deal of enthusiasm. He keeps things light with his sense of humor.”

Sophomores Dominic Gaudio (shooting guard) and Ryan Wojtalewicz (center) will be counted on as well. “Dominic is a good spot-up jump-shooter,” said Tyrrell. “Ryan is 6-4 and will give us depth in the post.

He’s the only true back-to-the-basket post player we have in the program.”

Tyrrell said while his team may not jump out on paper at people, it will compete night after night.

“When you give our team the eye test, we don’t look like an intimidating force, but they get it done, they are extremely smart and patient, and they play outstanding help defense,” he said. “Everybody on this team cares about each other. All of that is a good formula for success.”

The York girls basketball team got off to a strong start by going 3-1 in its own York Thanksgiving tournament.

York started the season with a 56-36 win over Niles West.

Danielle Dennis had 18 points, including a 7-for-7 effort from the free-throw line. Caylin Rufus added 15 points, including 10 in the second half. Emily Rohman had six points, while Matty Stark had five points and Lauren Viola had four points.

York then scored a 72-47 win over Downers Grove South.

Dennis had 18 points, while Rufus finished with 14 points.

Lauren Kjome had eight points, while Rohman had six points and Stark finished with five points.

The Dukes suffered a 38-30 loss to Yorkville, but came back to record a 49-37 victory against Prospect. Kathleen Levins led the Dukes with 11 points. Dennis added 10 points, while Rufus had nine points. Madison Park finished with seven points.

Prior to the start of the tournament, new York coach Brandon Collings had high hopes for both his offense and defense heading into the season.

“We’re going to get out and run as much as we can and get that secondary break into our five-out offense,” he said. “We have no true post, so we’re going to spread the floor and create some mismatches on the outside. Defensively, we are athletic and we’ll look to put pressure in the full court and half court. We’ll use some pressure and man defense in the half court and pressure traps in the full court.”

Collings also is excited about the experience level and amount of talent on the roster. “Our biggest strength is our experience,” he said. “We return 70-plus percent of our scoring from last year.

We also will be able to go about 10-deep. We’re going to get out and run and put pressure on people and we have the depth to do that.”

Collings said the preseason was productive from player and coaching perspectives. “We are still getting used to each other,” he said. “We’ve had a good couple weeks of practice. We are a little behind the eight-ball because I was hired so late in the summer. Usually you have the 25 contact days in summer and 30-some games where you get to run what you’re going to run during the season. We’ve had about two weeks to put everything in brand-new. If this was a young team, it would be more difficult, but with the experience we have we’ve been able to put in enough at the beginning to where we will be successful. We’re getting better each practice because the girls listen and they work hard. They are continuing to cut down on their mistakes. If they keep doing the little things right we will continue to get better.”

Collings highlighted the play of veterans Dennis, Rufus, Park, Viola and Levins. “Danielle Dennis averaged 14 points a game last year and will be one of our go-to scorers,” he said. “Caylin just signed with Upper Iowa and she has looked great. Madison is our point guard and it’s great to step into a program with a point guard with a bunch of experience. She’s done a great job running the offense. Lauren played quite a bit last year and will start this year. I’m impressed with her. She’s athletic and has the length and can do a lot defensively and I think she can do more offensively. Kathleen Levins is back after averaging five points last year as a freshman on the varsity. I’m excited about this group.”

Collings would like to see the team take the next step this season. “Having the experience is the first step,” he said. “They finished 4-8 in conference last year and that’s not the record they wanted. With the experience we have and the new offense and defense, that will help us get over the hump. We’re working on a lot of situational basketball that should help us in those situations where we win games by two or three points instead of losing by two or three points.”

Outlook: IC Catholic Prep finds itself one win away from its second state title in a row and fourth since 2002. The Knights are in the final after surviving a 7-0 decision at Byron in the semifinals. IC Catholic Prep is a staggering 12-1 in the playoffs over the last three seasons.

While IC Catholic Prep’s offense gets plenty of headlines for putting up points and churning out yards, its defense isn’t too shabby either.

The shutout of Byron in the semifinals on the road was the seventh time the Knights have surrendered a touchdown or less in a game this season. Quarterback CJ West has been outstanding since taking over the signal-calling duties and Lazerick Eatman is well over the 1,000-yard mark this season rushing. Pleasant Plains comes to DeKalb as the underdog of all underdogs as a No. 16 seed playing in a state final. Pleasant Plains made it into the playoffs as an automaticqualifier at 6-3, but the teams it had played in the regular season had a combined 39-42 record. The Cardinals, 3-6 in 2016, play in the Sangamo Conference where it played only nine conference games. In the playoffs, Pleasant Plains defeated No. 1 seed Trenton Wesclin (9-0 at the time) 51-20 in the first round and then edged No. 8 seed Newton (9-1 at the time) 29-27 before recording a 20-14 overtime win against Carlinville (10-1 at the time) in the state quarterfinals. The Cardinals then downed No. 3 seed Anna-Joneboro 41-2 in the semifinals. AnnaJonesboro was 12-0. Pleasant Plains is located less than 20 miles northwest of Springfield on Route 125. Pleasant Plains had only one playoff victory in school history prior to this season. Running back Nik Samson had three touchdowns in the win against Anna-Jonesboro.

IC Catholic Prep sophomore football newcomer Kevin Cooke is all about maximizing his time on the field.

“I got better by being more efficient,” said Cooke, who plays middle linebacker. “I take a more direct path to the ball. That’s helped me develop over the year. I have more efficient lines.”

Cooke has been one of many key pieces on an IC Catholic Prep defense that has helped the team march back to the Class 3A state title game for a second year in a row. The Knights (12-1) face Pleasant Plains for the crown Friday in DeKalb at Northern Illinois University. IC Catholic Prep’s defense has allowed a touchdown or less in seven games this season, including this past weekend’s 7-0 victory at Byron in the state semifinals.

Cooke, a transfer from Glenbard South in Glen Ellyn, said his role as a middle linebacker is no more important than the other 10 positions on defense.

“There’s not too much responsibility,” he said. “I have to do my job. I have to give a lot of credit to our defensive line. They keep the blockers off me and that allows me to do my job and make the tackles.”

Playing middle linebacker, Cooke said, requires a never-stop attitude.

“I would say the key is to be relentless and have no fears,” he said. “I do what I can every play to do the best job I can. As a linebacker, I have to get to the football every time. You have to play with relentless abandon and get to the football.”

Cooke said his initial indoctrination into IC Catholic Prep football has been something else. “This season has been incredible between my teammates and the success we’ve had,” he said. “It’s been amazing.

The team welcomed me in and I could not ask for anything better.

They have been so inviting and engaging and that’s allowed me to play well. These guys are great.”

The coach said Riverside-Brookfield and Wheaton Academy are two teams of note in the MSC Blue.

“R-B should be very good,” he said.

“They have a new coach and they have a very good junior class. Their sophomore team was outstanding last

season. I expect them to be the team to beat. Wheaton Academy has been very young and those players are getting older. We saw them over the summer and they are very good. I see us battling in the top echelon of the conference again this year.”

Knights to face No. 16 seed Pleasant Plains for 3A crown Friday in DeKalb

The IC Catholic Prep football team once again will have plans Thanksgiving weekend.

The Knights will defend their 2016 Class 3A state title Friday in DeKalb at Northern Illinois University’s Huskie Stadium after defeating host Byron 7-0 in a state semifinal game.

IC Catholic Prep will be in search of its fourth state football title since 2002 when it faces Pleasant Plains Friday at 4 p.m.

In the win against No. 3 seed Byron, which came into the game undefeated at 12-0, IC Catholic Prep quarterback CJ West provided the game’s only scoring on a fourth-quarter touchdown run. It was his seventh rushing touchdown of the season.

West finished 10 of 17 for 150 yards with two interceptions. IC Catholic Prep was limited to only 87 yards rushing on 26 carries (3.3 yards per carry). Lazerick Eatman ran 14 times for 45 yards, while West ran 12 times for 42 yards.

Khali Saunders caught five passes for 78 yards. Jacob Lytton caught two passes for 28 yards, while Eatman had two catches for four yards. Kevin Cooke had one catch for 10 yards and Khalil Saunders had one catch for 32 yards.

Defensively, junior Kemon Reese made a season-high 25 tackles. Cooke had 13 tackles, while Michael Johnson had 10 tackles. Khali Saunders had nine tackles and Jack Enright and Khalil Saunders each had seven tackles.

Max Cook had two pass deflections, while Reese had a fumble recovery.

Ryan Malek returned one kickoff 10 yards and Joseph Maci-gerace kicked one extra point.

Pleasant Plains brings a 10-3 record into Friday’s state title game and is the No. 16 seed on the bottom part of the Class 3A bracket. IC Catholic Prep (12-1) is the No. 5 seed on the top part of the bracket.

In addition to winning the Class 3A title in 2002 under the late Bob Cozzi, the Knights won the 2008 Class 2A title under the direction of coach Bill Schmidt and current coach Bill Krefft’s 2016 squad won the Class 3A title.

Under Krefft’s direction, IC Catholic Prep has made five playoff appearances since 2012 and has gone 37-3 over the last three seasons.

The future is quite bright for the IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team.

This year’s Knights squad, which saw as many as four freshmen get playing time on the varsity level this season, ended up 17-20 overall and took third in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division with a 7-5 mark. The Knights advanced to a Class 3A regional final where they lost to Chicago Resurrection, which took second in the state.

“We definitely got better,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Nancy D’Amore. “In the beginning of the season I knew it would be interesting

with three freshmen playing critical roles out of the gate. We ended up with a fourth freshman on the court at the end of the year.”

D’Amore said it was critical for her team to gain experience throughout the season. “The difference between us and six or seven matches we dropped or were in a position to win went straight to our experience and maturity. The difference between keeping a rally to one and two points and not five and six points for the other team, a lot of that is inexperience and not having the mentality yet where you can get out of those situations. I’m very proud of how they learned and how they battled. There were moments where we saw all that potential and the future, especially in that last match against Res (Chicago Resurrection). It was the best match

we played all year. We gave them one of their best matches of the postseason. That’s tough to do with that many freshmen on the floor.”

D’Amore is excited about the upcoming years. “The future looks bright, that’s for sure,” she said.

“They now have that experience under their belts. They got better every time they stepped on the court. That’s what you want to see.”

In addition to Hurt, the Knights also played freshmen Kristen Brachmann (middle blocker), Kaya Hood (middle blocker) and Jess Sobon (outside hitter).

The team will say goodbye to seniors Lytton, Sophie Zanoni and Jalene Pena.

Timothy Christian girls basketball team wins two games at IMSA tournament

Plans for opening night in new Timothy arena announced

The Timothy Christian girls basketball team went 2-2 at the season-opening IMSA tournament at Aurora Christian and IMSA. The Trojans opened the season with a 55-38 loss to Ottawa Township. Timothy then dropped a 46-36 game to Aurora Christian before beating Harvard 51-29 and Indian Creek 54-39 to finish the tournament 2-2.

In the loss to Ottawa, Jordyn Strube had 14 points, three rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Sureya Alex had seven points, four rebounds and two assists. Olivia Schuringa had six points and three rebounds. Hannah Schuringa had four points and led the Trojans with eight rebounds. Emily DeBoer had four points and six rebounds. Strube suffered a wrist injury

in the game and did not play in the remainder of the tournament.

In the loss to Aurora Christian, Alex had nine points and four rebounds, while Hannah Schuringa had eight points and 14 rebounds. Lauren Gehrke had eight points and eight rebounds.

Olivia Schuringa had 22 points and 13 rebounds in the win against Harvard, while Hannah Schuringa had 10 points and pulled in 18 rebounds.

In the win against Indian Creek, Alex had 15 points, four rebounds and three steals. Olivia Schuringa had 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Hannah Schuringa had 13 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

Timothy returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 28 when it faces St. Edward in Elgin.

Timothy Christian new arena grand opening Timothy Christian’s boys and girls basketball teams will be part of the school’s opening night festivities in its new arena on campus.

Both teams will face Chicago Christian on Friday, Dec. 1. The varsity girls basketball team takes place at 5 p.m. Randy Huisman will sing the National Anthem.

The Jessie White Tumblers will perform at 6:25 p.m., ahead of Chicago Blackhawks National Anthem singer Jim Cornelison’s rendition at 7:30 p.m. The boys basketball game against Chicago Christian is slated for a 7:35 p.m. tipoff.

Tickets to the game are $5 and Timothy officials are hoping for a crowd of more than 1,000. The facility has a capacity of 1,200.

York’s Rufus headed to Upper Iowa University

When York senior girls basketball player Caylin Rufus went to an elite basketball camp at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, she took plenty of notes.

“It seemed like a very nice school,” she said of the NCAA Division II institution. “It was a small campus.”

The small part played a role in Rufus recently deciding to continue her basketball career at Upper Iowa.

“I didn’t want to go to a big school,” said Rufus. “Upper Iowa is pretty small and the town is pretty small as well. It felt like home. Elmhurst is kind of big, but Upper Iowa seemed small.

The class sizes are 14 students and I like small settings. I like the one-onone learning with the teacher. That’s

going to help me get better.”

Rufus also had a chance to meet the Upper Iowa players. “The players were engaging and they were nice,” she said. “They bonded well with me, which was really nice. I watched practice and they worked well with each other. They have a lot of new players, mostly freshmen, and they all were in sync. They welcomed me and it felt right to be part of that program.”

Rufus is appreciative of the fact she gets to play collegiate basketball. “It is a great opportunity,” she said. “I’ve been working on this for as long as I can remember and I started playing in the fifth grade. I’m happy I got a scholarship. I worked for it and I’m blessed my schooling will be paid for. My dad doesn’t have to worry about paying for college and I don’t have to worry about

student debt.”

Rufus concentrated this past summer on her defense. “I’ve worked hard on my defense,” she said. “That’s what Upper Iowa saw first on the tape. They really liked my defense. I have a long wingspan and that’s something else they saw. I continue to work on my offense. I’m still missing layups sometimes. My jump shot is getting there.

Continuing to work on my offense will help me contribute more to the offense and to my team.”

Rufus would like to study physical therapy and computer science. “I’ve had some injuries going back to middle school and I’ve seen physical therapy people working with injured people,” she said. “Computer science is

said D’Amore. “It’s funny walking away from matches, I was talking to one of the Res coaches and that person said they didn’t want to play us and this is exactly why we didn’t want to play you. They didn’t realize we had four freshmen on the other side of the net.”

D’Amore also cited strong play from libero Bella Leslie. “Bella did

an incredible job for us,” she said.

“She will be something to watch the next couple years. This was her first year on varsity and she’ll be a junior next year.”

D’Amore also hinted that more help is on the way. “We expect a couple more youngsters to joint us next year,” she said. “We’re looking forward to next season.”

Making the state meet for the second year in a row was not lost on York junior diver Birgitte Kammerdiener.

“It means a lot to me because it shows how much my hard work has paid off,” she said.

A return to this past weekend’s state finals meet at New Trier in Winnetka, where she finished 23rd overall, also afforded Kammerdiener the opportunity to catch up with old friends.

“It’s very exciting to be able to see my old teammates from club and see how they have been doing throughout the season,” said Kammerdiener, who dives for the Windy City Dive Club based out of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

For Kammerdiener, this year’s improvement centered on putting the finishing touches on a number of categories critical to having successful dives.

“I definitely improved on being able to enter the water as clean as possible,” she said. “I worked on a new dive that I have been trying to perfect.”

That new dive includes a back half with a half backflip. “I did that dive over and over, making sure I was doing it as clean as possible and as fast as possible,” she said. “I worked on making my entry as clean as I could.”

Kammerdiener’s original sporting

background was in gymnastics. “I decided gymnastics wasn’t working out for me,” she said. “So I joined the closest sport to it and that’s diving.

I started out with the Addison Frogs and then transferred over to Windy City Dive. I had a couple dives already because I had done it before in the summer for fun. There were some things I had to pick up. Diving was different. I was used to always landing on my feet and then I had to switch and go head-first into the water.”

Kammerdiener likes the sport for several reasons. “I like it because even though it’s an individual sport, you still are training with the team,” she said. “You are able to connect with your teammates and coaches. It’s also great when you get a new skill. It’s so exciting.”

Kammerdiener said there is no better feeling than connecting on a dive.

“Especially when it’s one of the harder dives,” she said. “It’s either hit or miss and when you hit it, it’s a really great feeling.”

Kammerdiener also likes when unexpected success occurs off the board.

“Usually you can tell when you hit a good dive,” she said. “There are times you know you’ve missed, but there also are times where you think you’ve missed and it ends up being one of

Plasier era officially under way at Timothy Christian New boys basketball coach excited about prospects

By Mike Miazga New Timothy Christian boys basketball coach Scott Plasier did not take over a team bereft of talent.

The Trojans’ new coach has a core of four players returning from last year’s squad, headlined by senior post player Brandon Orange.

Also back are seniors Ty Merrick (guard), Michael Thomas (guard) and Nick Huisman (post). Orange and Merrick started last season, while Thomas also played significant minutes.

“Those four are back and we are hoping to see good things out of them,” said Plasier.

Orange brings a variety of key skills to the table. “We list him as a post player, but we’re going to move

him around as much as we can to keep bodies off him and help him get into good position to score the basketball,” said Plasier.

Key newcomers to the team include junior guard Justin Baez, senior Mike Martens and sophomore Matt Owens.

Martens is a standout soccer player at Timothy who will continue his soccer career at Wheaton College. He did not play basketball last year.

“Justin is going to help us quite a bit and I see Mike Martens playing a good role for us,” the coach said.

“Matt is a sophomore who also will play a role for us.”

Much like during the tenure of former coach Jack LeGrand (Timothy’s athletic director), Plasier has noticed his group displaying a familiar teamfirst attitude.

“I like how unselfish they are,” he said. “They do a really good job playing with each other. It’s a joy to see.

Even though we have some guys who can score it more, they do a great job of looking for each other and sharing the basketball. It all comes within the team concept, which is fun.”

Plasier said he likes his team’s ability to push the ball with pace. “We have shown we can play with good pace and make good decisions,” he said.

Plasier added one major emphasis this season will be on the defensive end. “Probably every team says this, but we have to consistently get stops,” he said. “We didn’t show that much in the summer, but the summer is very different than the actual season. We have a ways to go before we establish our identity on defense. We have to take pride on that side of the court or we won’t get the stops. We have to take it personal when the other team scores on us. If we can develop a defensive team that is what will put us over the top in those close games and it’s what will help you compete when the tournament season coms about.

We still have a ways to go. We have to get consistently better.”

Orange and Merrick were named senior team captains.

“Brandon has the ability to score it a lot of different ways, but the key with him is he is a good leader and so is Ty Merrick,” said Plasier. “Both have shown good leadership. Especially with me being a first-time head coach, we’ve had some good conversations about the direction of the team and their ability to coach guys up.

Their leadership has been tremendous to start the season.”

Plasier said teams such as Chicago Christian and Ridgewood have to be considered in the upper-echelon of the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division.

“Chicago Christian is going to be good again and Ridgewood will have a nice team,” he said. “Those will be two really big competitors to go through to try and win the conference championship, plus the other side of the conference has tough teams such as Illiana Christian and IC (IC Catho-

lic Prep). It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Plasier also has been pleased with how receptive his team has been to its new head coach.

“It’s been great,” he said. “The kids are receptive and open in their minds to my philosophy. They have been super. That has helped with the relationship side and it’s made the start here easier. We had the summer and the fall so it wasn’t like I was walking in here Nov. 6 (first day of practice/ tryouts) fresh. They have been a pleasure to get to know and coach. I can’t ask for any more than what they have given me.”

Timothy opened the season earlier in the week at the Lisle tournament.

The Trojans have already played Westmont and Yorkville Christian there and will face Evergreen Park Friday and Lisle on Saturday.

“There is some solid competition at Lisle,” said Plasier. “If we compete really hard and put forth what we’ve been working on, I’d like to think we will be in those games and give ourselves a fighting chance.”

Rufus is looking forward to her final York season. “Our new coach (Brandon Collings) is really nice,” she said.

“We have a very deep bench and a lot of people who play very well. We have a good offense and there is good chemistry with the girls. I’ve played with Danielle Dennis, Hailey Walker and Madison Park since fifth grade. I’m also playing with my sister this year.

We have good chemistry. We’re excited about the season. It could be one of our best seasons.”

and his staff. “The coaching makes a huge difference,” he said. “It seems like we have 20 coaches and they all are there to help you out. Most of them are volunteers. They believe in us and they work just as hard as us and put in the time so we can be successful on the field.”

The sophomore added he chose IC Catholic Prep for reasons well beyond football. “We chose IC because of the structure it gives me and my brother,” he said. “The academics here are so great and that gives us a lot of oppor-

tunities in the future. This was best for our family. It’s been incredible.”

Cooke, who played on the sophomore team at Glenbard South last year and dressed for the varsity’s lone playoff game, also plans on playing basketball and baseball at IC Catholic Prep. He spends some of his free-time working on his speed and conditioning. He’s also a member of the math team at IC Catholic Prep.

Cooke is quick to point out why the Knights once again are enjoying a long postseason run.

“We’ve been able to endure some adversity this year and we’ve been able to get over those hurdles and have success,” he said. “It’s been the ability of guys to step up. CJ West stepped up at quarterback and has excelled. Younger guys have been able to step up. Everybody does their job and everybody does their part on the team. That’s allowed us to have success and win football games.”

And the Knights now find themselves one football win away from a second state title in as many years.

Kammerdiener said she would like to continue the sport at the next level and is looking into “a bunch of Division I schools,” she said. Kammerdiener said she would like to major in nursing and have a minor in chemistry. She enjoys skiing, snowboarding, drawing, horseback riding and weight

lifting.

In terms of this season, Kammerdiener said one dive that stood out was a reverse dive with a pike. “It’s one of the dives you can really hit and get some of the highest points on,” she said. “Some people think it’s difficult, but I don’t think it’s very difficult. It’s one of my favorites. You face forward and you jump up and basically do a

back dive. It’s a mental thing. You are going forward and backward at the same time.”

At state this past weekend, Kammerdiener scored 183.85 points. A score of 189.00 made the final cut to the round of 16. The field was further reduced to the final round of 12. Eight divers had scores between 183 and 189 in the preliminary round.

Conroy appointed to tax force on sexual discrimination, harassment State Rep. Conroy (D-Villa Park) has been appointed to the House Task Force on Sexual Discrimination and Harassment, created in response to recent reports of harassment and discrimination at the State Capitol.

“In Springfield, the legislature took action to implement a number of measures that will begin to address the issue of sexual harassment and discrimination in state government,” she said.

City of Elmhurst recertified as STORMREADY community

According to a release issued by Elmhurst Fire Chief Thomas K. Freeman, the National Weather Service has once again recertified the City of Elmhurst as a StormReady Community. The City has received this certification every year since November 2000, and continues to meet and exceed the requirements of the StormReady program.

What is StormReady?

The StormReady program helps community leaders and emergency managers strengthen their local hazardous weather operations. StormReady does not mean Storm Proof. Communities are better prepared to save lives from the onslaught of severe weather through better planning, education

and awareness. NO Community is storm proof, but StormReady can help communities save lives.

To be recognized as StormReady, a community must: • Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operation center.

• Have more than one way to receive severe weather forecasts and warnings and to alert the public.

• Create a system that monitors local weather conditions.

• Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars.

• Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises.

Earlier this month, the House adopted House Joint Resolution 83, which resolves to change a culture that tolerates harassment in the Capitol and passed Senate Bill 402, which will require sexual harassment training for legislators, staffers and lobbyists. The task force will work with stakeholders to review the current laws in place and make recommendations for further legislative action.

These recommendations will seek to improve reporting of allegations, protect victims, and prevent further

discrimination and harassment.

“I am eager to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle as well as advocacy groups, staff members and lobbyists in state government to work towards meaningful solutions to make our workplace safe and welcome to all,” Conroy added. “With the coalition that we are building, I am confident that this task force will recommend substantive reform measures to not only strengthen anti-harassment policies, but really work towards changing a culture that allows this type of behavior to exist.”

Second City Brass returns to Bethel Church Concert will include arrangement by York High alum

By popular demand, Bethel United Church of Christ is presenting a concert featuring the Second City Brass quintet on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. as part of the church’s Music@Bethel Concert Series.

The December concert will include Merrill’s arrangement of The World for Christmas. This will be a premier performance of Merrill’s arrangement, originally composed by Anders Edenroth in 2012 for his Swedish a cappella quintet The Real Group.

“The Second City Brass quintet is a talented, spirited and tight-knit ensemble that performs a wide range of music for brass,” said Merrill. “They are equally at home playing J.S. Bach or Vince Guaraldi. Their concerts are both entertaining as well as educational.”

EMH Foundation’s Reindeer Route Housewalk coming Dec. 1 The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation will host its 41st Annual Reindeer Route Housewalk on Friday, Dec. 1.

The event features Elmhurst area homes decorated for the holidays by local florists.

A portion of proceeds from the 2017 Reindeer Route Housewalk will benefit the Teen Volunteer Health Profession Scholarship fund, which also includes the Marilyn A. Graber Teen Scholarship. These scholarships are for EMH teen volunteers interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.

The Housewalk will feature five homes in Elmhurst and one in Oak Brook. There are two Housewalk sessions on Friday, Dec. 1: 10 a.m.

– 3 p.m. and 6 – 9 p.m. The featured homes are located at and decorated by:
