Visitation School’s dedicated principal for 40 years

Visitation Catholic School sadly announces that on Friday, Nov. 13, esteemed former principal, Sister Thomas Leo, OP, passed away at the Adrian, Mich., Dominican Life Center she moved to after retiring from her Visitation School principal position after 40 years.

“Sister made such an impact on generations of students and their families,” said current Visitation School Principal Carrie Mijal. “She will be greatly missed. Please join me in keeping her family in our prayers.”

Indeed, generations have been greatly affected by Sister’s devotion to elementary education. At Visitation School, many alumni have seen their own children graduate from Visitation and can share Sister Thomas Leo stories, looking back on the profound benefits and memories they all share.

“My sisters and I were blessed to have attended Visitation under Sister’s dedication,” said alum Colleen Goodall Muno, who has two sons who’ve also graduated from Visitation. “All in her presence felt safe and cared for. When my husband Dave and I dropped our oldest off on his first day, Sister waved us out the door and said, ‘Don’t worry. I will take care of all the children.’

Governor signs new ‘Disaster Proclamation’ DuPage area remains rolled back to Tier 2 mitigations

Citing Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) data on the continued increase of COVID-19 cases across the state, Gov. JB Pritzker signed a new Disaster Proclamation on Friday, Nov. 13. The Proclamation extends the Governor’s previous state-wide declaration through Dec. 12 and also extends all Restore Illinois Phase 4 orders, according to a release from the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI).

Another Executive Order was signed by the governor to modify and extend the moratorium on residential evictions.

The preliminary IDPH data shows a seven-day statewide positivity rate (the number of positive COVID-19 tests as a percent of total tests) increased to 13.2 percent. The percent of cases by county can be found on the state’s coronavirus website.

Region 1, 5, 7 and 8 (DuPage County) remains rolled back to “enhanced Tier 2 mitigations,” while all other regions in the state are back to enhanced Tier 1 mitigations. Phase 4 guidelines are available from the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (IDCEO). For more information, contact IDCEO at (800) 252-2923.

Public meetings will continue to be held remotely as long as certain requirements are met.

Festival of Lessons and Carols ECPA Virtual Spotlight event offers gala experience to be held virtually on Dec. 4 The Elmhurst University Festival of Lessons and Carols brings together the campus and community to open a joyful and spiritual season.

Bridging the season of Advent and Christmastide, the annual celebration will be offered virtually this year on Friday, Dec. 4, and will draw on past performances of this beloved tradition.

The first Festival of Lessons and Carols, known then as the Christmas Candle Light Carol Service, was held in December of 1933. The service has had different names over the years, including the Christmas Candlelight

Service and A Service of Lessons and Carols, before becoming the Festival of Lessons and Carols. The Festival consists of nine Scriptural readings that tell the story of the birth of the Messiah, interspersed with music by the Elmhurst University choirs.

City approves 3.47% increase in tax levy

The Elmhurst City Council held its regular meeting on the evening of Monday, Nov. 16, which was held remotely, with all aldermen attending virtually.

On the agenda was a report on the 2020 Tax Levy brought forward by the Finance, Council Affairs and Administrative Services (FCAAS) Committee for approval. The recommendation read as follows: “It is, therefore, the recommendation of the Finance, Council Affairs and Administrative Services Committee that the City Council approve the City of Elmhurst 2020 tax levy in the amount of $19,913,654, representing a 3.47% increase in the City’s tax levy compared to 2019. “Furthermore, it is the recommendation of the FCAAS Committee that the City Council approve the abatement of all current debt service obligations for the City’s general obligation bonds in the amount of $9,617,050.02.”

“This report recommends a 3.47% increase in the tax levy, which is completely driven by another increase in pension contributions,” said 4th Ward Alderman Noel Talluto, who is Chair of the FCAAS Committee. “The levy for the library remains flat, but we still recommend abating all debt service.

“We try to balance opposing pressures. An upward pressure continues to be felt as we keep funding the police and fire pensions. We are also trying to keep things low for the sake of our residents, especially those who may be struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. We feel it is fair and prudent, it helps the pensions, but keeps the total levy low overall for the residents.”

Talluto went on to further explain the report.

“For an average homeowner, the 3.47% would amount to about another $36 each year in taxes,” she said. “The property tax bill will reflect separate line items. The City’s line item will show a 7% decrease, the Library line is flat or zero percent, and the pension line has a 10.4% increase. That makes for a total combined increase of 3.47%.”

The measure passed 12-0 with one absent and one vacant seat.

COVID-19 updates for DuPage County As of 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, there were 33.956 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 655 deaths. Since Sunday, there were 620 new cases and two deaths related to COVID-19.

The DuPage Health Department announced that there are still delays with the Illinois Department of Public Health and therefore, data may be incomplete.

Number of cases by town At press time, the DuPage Department of Health reported the following number of COVID-19 cases in our readership communities as follows: Addison 2,227, Bensenville 1,220, Elmhurst 1,707, Lombard 1635, Oakbrook Terrace 111, Villa Park 997, Wood Dale 725.

Elmhurst Hospital reports that 47 inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19 were discharged last week. Since March 24, a total of 818 patients have been discharged.

ComEd’s new assistance programs help residents, small businesses According to the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ComEd is offering new assistance programs to help both small businesses and residential customers who are facing financial difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ComEd’s Small Business Assistance Program provides eligible small-business customers that are past due on their energy bills with a one-time grant equal to 30 percent of their total ComEd balance (up to $1,000) for a limited time.

In addition, customers whose electric service has not been disconnected can then set up their remaining balance due on a payment plan of up to six months.

“Small and family-owned businesses are the backbone of our communities and when they struggle, our neighborhoods struggle,” said ComEd CEO Joe Dominguez. “By offering a new bill-assistance option targeting small and family-owned businesses, we hope to do our part to ensure that the businesses that we all love and depend

upon continue to be a part of our lives.”

ComEd’s Helping Hands Program provides assistance to residential customers facing hardships. For a limited time, this financial-assistance program provides an additional one-time grant of up to $300 to help reduce past-due balances of income-eligible customers.

ComEd’s bill-assistance programs also include flexible payment options, financial assistance for past-due balances and usage alerts for current bills.

Customers experiencing a hardship or difficulty with their electric bill should call ComEd immediately at 1-800334-7661 (1-800-EDISON-1) Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to learn more and enroll in a program.

ComEd also offers usage alerts and energy-management tips to help customers manage energy use to save money now and on future energy bills.

IRS criminal investigation report identifies $2.3 billion in tax fraud On Monday, Nov. 16, the Internal Revenue Service released the Criminal Investigation Division’s annual report, highlighting the agency’s successes and criminal enforcement actions taken in fiscal year 2020, the majority of which occurred during COVID-19. A key achievement was the identification of more than $10 billion in tax fraud and other financial crimes.

“The special agents and professional staff who make up Criminal Investigation continue to perform at an incredibly high-level year after year,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig.

“Even in the face of a global pandemic, the CI workforce initiated nearly 1,600 investigations and identified $2.3 billion in tax fraud schemes. This is no small feat during a challenging year, and their work is critical to protecting taxpayers and the integrity of our tax system.”

Key focuses of CI in fiscal year 2020 included COVID-19 related fraud, political bribery, and cybercrimes, with an emphasis on virtual and cryptocurrencies, traditional tax investigations, international tax enforcement, employment tax, refund fraud and tax-related identity theft.

The 2020 report summarizes a wide variety of CI activity during the year and features examples of cases from each field office on a wide range of financial crimes. The federal fiscal year begins Oct. 1 and ends on Sept. 30.

Some of the Chicago Field Office’s most impactful cases in fiscal year 2020 include 1), “Commonwealth Edison agrees to pay $200 million to resolve federal criminal investigation into bribery scheme;” and 2) “Three Chicago area residents charged with conducting online romance fraud and other schemes.”

Sister Thomas Leo graduated from Amundsen High School in Chicago, earned her bachelor’s degree from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Mich., and her master’s degree in administration/school supervision from DePaul University, Chicago. She entered the Convent of the Sisters of St. Dominic in Adrian in 1951. She was the proud aunt of 19, great aunt of 55, and great-great aunt of 41.

Sister was an awarded member of the Elmhurst community. Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation (ECAF) named her 2013’s Friend of the Children for her dedication to not only Visitation but to the entire community. She was a huge supporter of the Annie Ryan Run and made sure Visitation students always had a large presence at the event for 17 years. In 2013, she was also the run’s honorary starter and was inducted into ICCP’s Wall of Honor.

Ryan and his wife Mary Beth are thankful to have had the opportunity to watch their own five children graduate from Visitation.

“Sister was strong in faith and discipline,” Ryan said. “Her dedication to the students and families of Visitation School and Parish was remarkable. Her spirit will live on in her students and the Visitation community knows she is looking over us again up in heaven.”

Services and burial are being held at the Dominican Motherhouse in Adrian, Mi. on Wednesday, Nov. 18.

On Monday, Nov. 2, students at Immaculate Conception Grade School celebrated both All Saints Day and All Souls Day at a Mass that was attended in the IC Church by the school’s first graders. All of the remaining students participated in Mass via livestream in their classrooms.

In keeping with a longstanding tradition at ICGS, the first graders each dressed as their patron saints after researching their lives over the previous weeks. Since parents could not attend the Mass due to social distancing restrictions, the students came outside after Mass and waved to their parents who drove by honking their horns for an All Saints Day Car Parade along Arthur Street.

Guaranteed Rate drive fills 700 care Slices of life packages for Support over Stigma Thank you, friends, I cherish you With Veterans Day and the pandemic in mind, gloved and masked volunteers, including York High School student athletes, recently helped fill more than 700 care packages for Support over Stigma, an organization that aids active duty military, veterans and first responders suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Guaranteed Rate, 115 W. Adelaide St., hosted the drive where many local residents and businesses donated thousands of personal items and stocking stuffers.

John Noldan, executive vice president of mortgage lending at Elmhurst’s Guaranteed Rate, partnered with Support over Stigma because he saw the need to help those frontline heroes suffering from PTSD amidst rising suicide numbers during the

COVID-19 pandemic. SOS founder Zoeie Kreiner said the donors and volunteers at G-Rate worked together to set a record for the most care packages ever packed since the organization’s inception.

“You and your volunteers were truly rock stars,” said Kreiner. “We have enough boxes packed to send to all of our addresses [on our list]. Thank you so much.”

Business Development Manager Andrew Winton said Guaranteed Rate was happy to get the word out about Support over Stigma and is thankful to all those who donated and especially to the York High School kids, who showed up to fill two three-hour volunteer shifts.

Facebook friends. Editor friends I’ve never met. Peripheral friends.

Understanding friends. People you casually encounter who may not be friends (yet) but feel like they are.

You all are golden.

I learned this recently, out of necessity.

I don’t consider myself a dependent person – quite the opposite. Most of the time I’m pretty indy (read: mom cool). Some of this can be chalked up to my heritage. I come from people who lived months in a frozen climate.

This may have led to intimate cuddling and large families, but mostly it led to long months of isolation due to the frigid temperatures. This created a toughness and resiliency known as “cold nose, warm heart.”

My ancestors’ hearts may have been warm, but the rest of their bodies were not, hence the large parkas and extra blankets. It’s difficult to hug through a puffy parka and billowing blanket. Take it from my great grandparents.

Move ahead a couple of generations and you can ascertain I didn’t grow up in a “huggy” family.

We were more than loving. I never doubted that. But hugs? You might see them at funerals and weddings. If we said, “I love you,” once we meant it; why repeat words that didn’t need repeating?

Love brings me back to the subject at hand: friendship.

I don’t take my friends for granted. Or maybe I do. Maybe I did.

doesn’t it? We can even pause our friends for 30 days if they displease us in some way. Not sure what we should make of that, even in an election year.

Speaking of years, has 2020 not been the bomb – in a masked and morbid atomic sort of way? I truly thought it couldn’t get any worse, and then it did.

I don’t want to go into details because I try not to be too personal about things (while being as personal as I can be – go figure).

I found myself in a situation where I really, truly, honest to goodly needed my friends. During COVID. #maskawareness How do you reach out during a pandemic? You just do. How do you ask for help? You just do.

At first I tried to tough it out. It’s hard to be vulnerable, even with friends. I didn’t want to jump to conclusions or burden people with my plight. But I grew weary. After a time I contacted a few select friends and my sister (who qualifies as a lifelong friend).

I am a hold-it-to-the-vest person.

I don’t often show my cards.

I probably should have been a professional poker player. So, reaching out to others at a down time in my life was difficult.

Luckily I’ve chosen good friends, or perhaps they were chosen for me.

After the last few weeks I feel

fortunate for the support received.

I’m surrounded by people who care unconditionally.

This column is dedicated to friends – and family who feel like friends – who provide support during some of the most difficult times of life.

My advice: cherish the people who have your back no matter what.

Cherish those who give and give (and give some more) without asking anything in return.

Cherish old friends and new friends, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters. Trust your gut. Talk to the people who hear you and honestly listen. Break free from those who don’t; that may happen. There will be surprises along the way. There were for me. Good ones and even the opposite.

Finally – never take anyone for granted. Not your friends. Not your family. Never, ever anyone you hold dear to your heart. It’s hard to operate under that pretense, because it’s hard to not take things (or people or life) for granted. Don’t beat yourself up if you do. It’s the human condition.

Take each day as it comes. Try to see the good and the gifts and (dare I say) miracles. They are there for the taking – even on the worst and most teary-eyed days. And even if you don’t come from a hug-filled background, go against the grain.

Hug away. You won’t regret it. I’m speaking from the heart as well as experience. Trust me.

And to the friends of mine out there: It goes without saying, I’m sending you love and lots (and lots) of hugs.

EYFP has swiftly adjusted client service and volunteer procedures to ensure a safe environment and scaled up food distributions to ensure no one is turned away. The number of client registrations has tripled since March, so the generous support of donors has been more important than ever this year.

Those who would like to participate in EYFP’s Pop the Trunk Food Drive should bring their donations to the pantry, located at 1083 S. York St., between 2 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29.

“Simply put your donations in the trunk of your car, drive up to the pantry, pop the trunk, and we’ll do the rest,” Watts said.

EYFP hopes to collect at least 3,000 pounds of food and hygiene products through this event. Some of the most-needed items include diced tomatoes, canned vegetables, canned fruit, soups, and toothpaste.

“I continue to be amazed at the miraculous level of community support for those struggling to put food on the table,” Watts said.

Nov. 10 Police said officers responded to a report of an intoxicated suspect who was threatening a family member. Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspect threatened and chest-bumped the victim. The suspect was taken into custody and was transported to the police station, where he made suicidal statements. The reporting officer will obtain a warrant with the charge of domestic battery for the suspect.

Nov. 8 A 40-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 400 block of W. Verret at around 7:13 p.m. A victim told police the suspect allegedly stabbed him with a fork following a verbal argument. The victim sustained puncture marks to his left shoulder.

Medics were called to the scene; however, the victim refused further medical assistance and was released to his father.

Nov. 7 Police said officers responded to W. Lake and N. Church at around 6:22 p.m. for the report of a domestic disturbance. The reporting officer met with the victim who stated she was involved in a physical altercation with a suspect; however, she was not injured and did not wish to pursue charges. The victim stated the suspect grabbed the car keys from the ignition and threw them out of the window. There were no signs of injuries from both parties.

Nov. 6 Alyssa Cordero, 23, of Chicago, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis by a passenger and unlawful use of electronic communication device subsequent to a traffic stop near W. North and N. Addison at around 9:24 p.m.

Rodrigo Puentes-Palos, 21, of Stone Park, was charged with possession of cannabis in a vehicle, no valid driver’s license and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop in the 200 block of E. North at around 12:03 p.m.

Carlos A. Delgado, 25, of Grayslake, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued citations for unlawful possession of medical cannabis in a vehicle by a passenger and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near E. North and Melrose at around 12:43 p.m.

Nov. 10 Police said a suspect was observed leaving a store in the 100 block of Schiller at around 10:19 p.m. without paying for liquor. An ISPERN message was broadcast.

The reporting officer learned that Hillside police had the suspect in custody and he was awaiting transport to the Cook County Jail on their felony charges. The reporting officer obtained a warrant for the suspect with the charges of felony burglary and felony retail theft, which is pending.

Theft was reported in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 9:11 p.m. Police said a resident located the victim’s purse in a pile of leaves and turned it in to the police station. The victim believes she may have left her purse in the parking lot of Whole Foods, but is not sure where she misplaced it. The victim came to the police station and looked through the contents of her purse. She determined that she was missing her driver’s license, a debit card, and three credit cards.

The victim’s driver’s license was entered into LEADS. Nov. 7 Police said officers observed a stolen vehicle traveling westbound on North Avenue near Berteau at around 8:13 p.m. The vehicle was found to be stolen out of Cicero. The vehicle was observed in the area of North and Villa traveling at a high rate of speed and changing lanes in an unsafe manner.

Due to the vehicle’s reckless driving, officers were unable to conduct a traffic stop.

Nov. 6 Theft by deception was reported in the 400 block of N. Larch at around 7:05 p.m. A victim told police she received a phone call from whom she believed to be her grandson stating he was arrested and needed money.

Nov. 5 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 7:11 p.m.

A complainant told police that an unknown suspect described as an Hispanic male stole over the counter medication. He exited the store and entered the passenger side of the suspect vehicle, which fled the scene westbound on Industrial Drive.

Nov. 4-Nov. 5 Theft was reported in the 400 block of W. Butterfield between the above dates. A victim told police that she placed cash and other personal documents into an envelope in her room. The following day, she discovered the envelope was missing. The victim lives in an assisted living facility and numerous staff members have access to her room.

July 31-Oct. 28 Unlawful use of a credit card was reported in the 200 block of W. Lake. A victim told police that he has found several fraudulent charges on his credit card a learning academy sometime between the above dates. Further investigation is pending.

Unemployment benefits identity theft

Oct. 25-Nov. 7 Between the above dates, the Elmhurst Police Department reported 27 incidents of identity theft with the intention of using a victim’s personal information to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits through the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Warrant arrest

Nov. 9 Police said officers responded to a report of a failure to pay. Upon speaking with the suspects, an officer learned that Michael Wright, 35, of Villa Park, had a valid warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, according to police. He was taken into custody, transported to the police station and processed on the warrant.

Top crime news Shell casing found after loud noise; neighbor finds possible bullet hole in siding

Suspicious circumstances were report on Nov. 8, when police said in the 600 block of Berkley at around 6:27 p.m., a .380 shell casing was found in the street. Residents stated they heard a loud bang which they thought was a firework. The stop sign at Berkley and McKinley was found to have a bullet hole in it. A possible suspected vehicle was captured on video. It is described as a light colored four-door with possible rear tinted windows.

Police said a reporting officer met

with the complainant who stated he located a possible bullet hole in the siding on the north side of the residence in the 200 block of N. Melrose at around 11:19 a.m. The reporting officer inspected the siding and located a hole but did not locate any projectiles.

Witness sees suspect steal tools from fire vehicle

On Nov. 11, burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 400 block of N. York at around 10:34 a.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect stole tools off a fire vehicle parked outside of Fire Station 1.

The reporting officer spoke with a witness who stated he observed a

suspect described as a black male enter the side compartment of the fire truck and remove a black bag and large saw. The unknown suspect placed the items in the rear seat of a black Honda and left the area. This case is pending investigation.

On Nov. 9, forgery was reported at a store in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:02 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect described as a black male, around 35 years old, 6-2 with a heavy build used a counterfeit $100 bill to purchase $11.54 worth of food items, received his change

doors, especially fishing and boating. In 1972 he and Mary Jane built a home in Door County, WI where he spent countless hours on his boats fishing the Great Lakes with his family and friends.

His love for music was obvious.

It was during college that he first organized a small band, playing his accordion around Chicago often with Mary Jane by his side. Every Christmas Eve he would sit down at the organ or play his accordion while family sang songs and danced to Nu Ar Det Julien, a traditional Swedish holiday song. He played for many Scandinavian celebrations and nursing homes throughout his life until his fingers no longer worked and the accordion became too heavy. But not to be deterred, Roy ultimately decided upon the harmonica which he played along with the many dedicated musicians who entertained at Lexington, or outside for the birds in the park across the street.

Roy and Mary Jane moved to Lexington Square senior residence in 2001 where they were fortunate to have many friends. They split their time between Door County and Elmhurst until they sold their Door County home in 2013.

Roy remained an active member of the American Society of Engineers throughout his life and was elected a Life Fellow. He was an avid ham radio operator. He was passionate about his education and he and Mary Jane supported IIT

where he has a room dedicated to him.

Roy is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mary Jane, who partnered with him through life, sharing his love of music and family, enjoying his dry sense of humor, putting up with his never-ending search for new “toys” to tinker with and loving and caring for him during his last years. He is also survived by his three daughters, Carol Sahlstrom, Jean Provan (Norm), Nancy Zierk (Bob), six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, all of whom loved Grandpa Sahlty.

Roy leaves us with his philosophy of life: “Be level headed, open minded, like your friends, and don’t look at things from only your point of view: maybe it is wrong.”

As he wrote in an essay for the 50th anniversary of his graduation from IIT, “Looking back is a kaleidoscope of beautiful memories.” He will be missed by all but we know he is now at peace and in God’s hands. There has to be an accordion in heaven. Goodbye for now, until we meet again.

Newest ComEd program provides bill assistance to struggling small businesses during pandemic With many restaurants, bars, retailers and other small businesses across northern Illinois struggling to stay open during the COVID-19 pandemic, ComEd has announced a new bill-assistance program to help eligible small businesses facing financial difficulties.

“Small and family-owned businesses are the backbone of our communities. When they struggle, our neighborhoods struggle.” said ComEd CEO Joe Dominguez. “By offering a new bill-assistance option targeting small and family-owned businesses, we hope to do our part to ensure that the businesses that we all love and depend upon continue to be a part of our lives.”

ComEd’s Small Business Assistance Program provides eligible small-business customers that are past due on their energy bills with a one-time grant equal to 30 percent of their total ComEd balance (up to $1,000) for a limited time.

Customers whose electric service has not been disconnected can then set up their remaining balance due on a payment plan of up to six months.

ComEd has continued the suspension of service disconnections for low-income customers and those who express a financial hardship through March 31, 2021. Reader urges respect for healthcare workers, first responders Of course, I’m tired of staying at home, cooking every day and not seeing more than one or two friends at a time masked and from a distance, but friends, you and I could be health care workers and other first responders!

They have been on the frontline of defense for the last eight months and they have had little time to complain or whine. They get up every morning knowing what they must continue to do and take care of people, who sometimes refuse to take care of themselves and others. That’s right!

By the numbers Illinois has been posting and the country in general, we are not doing our part to make their job any easier. We want to eat in restaurants, drink in bars, have parties on the weekend and travel.

Well folks for now, that is simply irresponsible behavior. COVID is raging and we can’t ignore it’s our reality.

We are showing disrespect for these health care workers and first responders when we don’t take simple precautions. Yes, they are simple…wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands and limit numbers in gatherings.

Health care workers have to wear one set of clothes into their workplace, suit up if they are lucky to have enough PPE, and bag their clothes before they enter their homes or immediately after and shower before they can even say hello to their family members, every single day.

We should be thankful they don’t throw up their hands from exhaustion and disappointment. Have you seen pictures of the bruises and marks left on their faces from wearing masks for hours at a time? They have seen more deaths in these past eight months than any person should have to experience. Who knows how many workers will suffer from PTSD after this ordeal comes to an end.

So folks, we need to do whatever it takes to slow down and reduce these numbers. We need to set aside our politics and selfish wants until a vaccine is safely available and distributed. Be thankful to the health care workers and first responders and support them in every possible way.

Congressman Raja weighs in on national issues Following is a message submitted by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi: National security implications of delayed Presidential transition On Friday, Nov. 13, I sent letters to Emily Murphy, the Administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA), and John Ratcliffe, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), to express my concern that the official documents to launch the presidential transition process have not yet been approved by Murphy. This presents a national security threat as the Biden administration takes over in January, and U.S. law requires a coordinated transition process so that members of the outgoing and incoming administrations can ensure a smooth and safe transfer of power.

The GSA Administrator must sign this paperwork to begin the presidential transition process, which

includes the release of funding and resources to the new administration in addition to allowing the Presidentelect to receive full national security briefings. Murphy’s refusal to recognize President-elect Biden’s victory may have significant national security implications as it delays the transfer of intelligence information such as military operation summaries and background checks for incoming Biden administration staff.

As a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, I’m concerned with this disruption in the presidential transition process and the potential safety risk it presents to the American people.

FTC cracks down on fraudulent coronavirus “cure” marketing In response to my investigation into the marketing of fraudulent coronavirus “cures,” the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced

on Thursday, Nov. 12, they’ve begun to crack down on dangerous products and services, demanding that 20 companies stop falsely advertising unproven and unapproved coronavirus treatments.

I told NPR last month, we cannot allow pandemic profiteers to deceive consumers into purchasing expensive, ineffective, and potentially dangerous COVID-19 treatments.

2020 Election Results: Here is my full statement in response to the news of the victory of President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris With more than 75 million votes overall and a substantial margin in the electoral college, the American people have elected Joe Biden as our next president with a clear mandate to heal our country’s wounds while defeating the coronavirus and reviving our economy. The son of Scranton never forgot the

commitment to make a difference that led him into public service, and he never will.

The election of Kamala Harris as Vice President is a transformative, meaningful moment for our country. Exactly 100 years after the ratification of the 19th Amendment, we have elected America’s first female Vice President. In a year of racial strife, we have elected America’s first black Vice President.

The daughter of immigrants, Kamala Devi Harris also makes history as our first South Asian Vice President.

As an Indian-American, I’m very grateful that my children will see Kamala Harris, along with Joe Biden, as a role model when she enters office. I know she’ll work to further the progress the United States has made in representation and equality, and countless people will be inspired by her example.

Another First Lady of Elmhurst …Virginia (Justus) Harmon

One of the very first cable television programs I produced for the City of Elmhurst was in 1982. The decision was made to highlight the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry on one segment of the show. When I called to make an appointment to interview the President of the Chamber, I was surprised to learn that Virginia Harmon was the current president. Up until that time all the previous presidents had been men. Virginia had the distinction of being the first Elmhurst woman seated on the Chamber Board

of Directors. She was the very first woman elected President in 1981.

Virginia is a warm, friendly and energetic person. And it was no wonder that the Elmhurst Chamber broke new ground under her presidency. She implemented the creative idea of Cham-

ber Ambassadors. Deciding to outfit members in distinctive bright green coats (with the logo she designed stitched to the front), Virginia helped the Chamber become highly visible in the community. Today the Ambassadors continue to be seen cheerfully spreading goodwill at many chamber and civic functions.

Virginia “Ginny” Justus was born in Oklahoma City in 1926. She attended local schools and studied the fine arts in Junior College. She also took private vocal lessons. Throughout her life she has continued to enroll in numerous business education courses. In 1944 Virginia married Earle D. Harmon and they had two daughters, Darylene (4/23/46) and Cynthia (5/14/54).

Virginia’s first career was as a commercial artist. But in 1958, the Harmon family moved from Oklahoma to Elmhurst when Mr. Harmon’s company appointed him National Sales Manager. Much travel was required in this position and living in Elmhurst was the ideal location for them.

“We moved to this area over 40 years ago when my husband was transferred,” Ginny said. “We looked at many suburbs, but we fell in love with Elmhurst! We just thought it was the neatest place we’d ever seen!”

Once here, Ginny became president of Patricia Stevens Cosmetics Company in Chicago for three years prior to starting Unique Travel Service with her family in 1970 at 170 North York Street in Elmhurst. The family has been working in the travel business for 30 years and still enjoys every minute of it. Ginny explained to me what their family philosophy is: “We believe in giving back to our community by giving time and energy to the numerous organizations contributing to the quality of life for Elmhurst and our business community.”

And she certainly did give back to the Elmhurst community enthusiastically!

Virginia Harmon was on the Elmhurst Family YMCA Board for sixteen years. She has been appointed to the Elmhurst City Centre Business District Commission and has served under three different mayors: Abner Ganet, Charles Garrigues and Thomas D. Marcucci. Ginny was a Board Member of the Elmhurst Economic Development Corporation for two terms. She served on the Foundation Board of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and the Elmhurst College Board of Trustees. She was also a founding member of Elmhurst College and Community Association. She was an elder of the Elmhurst Presbyterian Church, and sang as a choir member and soloist as well. Ginny was president of the Elmhurst Woman’s Club in 1965 and Director of that club’s

In 1986 Virginia Harmon was selected out of 700 Celebrate Women applicants and presented with the prestigious Business Woman of the Year award by the Illinois State Federation of Woman’s Clubs. She also served as president of her Travel Business Consortium, which represents more than 360 agencies. In 1997, Virginia “Ginny” Harmon was recognized as one of the Outstanding Elmhurst Business Women by the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In 1998 she was selected for the Elmhurst Civic Hall of Fame.

“I’ve known Ginny personally for over 35 years from the time I was a young junior high-age kid mooching a coke in her kitchen,” said Mayor Thomas D. Marcucci said when making the presentation. “She was a great lady in the neighborhood, a great Mom, a great pleasure to the kids.

And we were not aware of all the civic functions and business things she was doing. She was just a great Mom in the neighborhood. And so that’s another aspect of her contribution to this community that I think needs to be recognized…I can’t think of anybody

more deserving who has contributed more to this community over her lifetime. This is a lifetime award. It’s an honor and a pleasure to present you with this award today.”

The plaque presented read, “The Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry Civic Hall of Fame awarded to Virginia J. Harmon - a business, community and family leader with a big heart, a bright smile and a mind for great ideas! Presented at Elmfest Celebration June 12, 1998.”

Likewise, when describing Virginia Harmon, Jeanette Cureton, thenFirst Lady of Elmhurst College, had this to say: “Although her participation in civic affairs is broad and her support deep, it is perhaps her personal qualities that have most endeared her to those who know her best. Her ability to combine ideas with practical realities, her somewhat contradictory mix of quiet determination and perpetual enthusiasm, her flair, and, at the same time, subtle charm.”

Earle passed away in 2014. Ginny is currently enjoying her retirement years and will always remain highly regarded for her contributions to the community of Elmhurst.

The Dr. Robert Stanger Young Artist Concerto Audition for the 2021-22 season will be conducted by the Elmhurst Symphony Association in cooperation with the Elmhurst Kiwanis Club on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Rd. The yearly Stanger Audition provides an opportunity for outstanding high school orchestral instrumentalists and pianists to grow as musicians, gain recognition for their efforts preparing for the Audition, and compete for the opportunity to perform a concerto movement with the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra. The winner of this event will appear as a soloist with the ESO during its 2021-22 subscription season and will also receive a monetary award of $400. Three runners-up receive monetary awards and are invited to perform for local community groups.

Applications for the Stanger Audition must be postmarked by Dec. 30; the application fee is $40. Each entrant will be given 10 minutes to perform a selection, and performances will be evaluated by three judges who

York Theatre owners announce plans to expand Tivoli

Chris Johnson, co-CEO of Classic Cinemas and son of Willis and Shirley Johnson, is taking steps to obtain permission from the Village of Downers Grove to add a smaller, more intimate theatre next door to its current location in downtown Downers Grove in a space that has been a vacant storefront since 2013.

“The biggest thing it does is allows us flexibility,” said Chris Johnson, a co-CEO of Classic Cinemas, which operates the Tivoli, as well as York Theatre in downtown Elmhurst. “Instead of holding the same feature for three to four weeks in the big house, we’ll be able to move it to the smaller house and then open a newer movie.”

west of the Tivoli’s main entrance at 5021 Highland Ave. The Tivoli is a 1,050-seat theatre that dates all the way back to 1928 to the days of vaudeville. On tours of the facility, visitors can see the old dressing rooms with their huge lighted mirrors for the performers.

The new theater is expected to have what many refer to as “premiere” viewing. That is, it may only have as few as 32 seats, but according to Johnson, it will include heated reclining seats and state-of-the-art laser projection technology. He further hopes it will provide the opportunity to book more concerts and live events on the main stage.

Classic Cinemas is in the process of applying for a special use permit from the village to do the project.

Americans in the dark on diabetic retinopathy symptoms, risks, survey finds Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among working-age adults, yet most Americans over 40 don’t know its symptoms or the risk factors for this common sight-threatening condition, according to a survey commissioned by the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS).

The condition affects nearly 8 million Americans, and that number is expected to double by 2050, but adults over 40 lack fundamental knowledge about diabetic retinopathy that could help save their sight. In fact, the survey found fewer than half of those polled (47%) knew that blurry central vision can be a symptom of diabetic retinopathy and only 37% identified seeing spots or floaters as a known symptom.

While most know that having Type 1, Type 2, or gestational diabetes puts

Of those polled, nearly two-thirds (64%) did not know that elevated cholesterol increases the risk of diabetic retinopathy, and nearly half (48%) did not identify high blood pressure as a contributing risk factor.

During November’s Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month, America’s retina specialists urge the public to protect their vision by learning the facts about diabetic retinopathy and adopting healthy habits to preserve healthy sight.

“Diabetic retinopathy is a preventable cause of blindness, so early identification and treatment is critical,” said ASRS president Carl C. Awh, MD. “All health care providers who care for diabetic patients should emphasize the importance of controlling

known risk factors and the need for regular dilated retina examinations to identify diabetic retinopathy at an early stage. Many patients with sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy have excellent vision and no symptoms, which is the ideal time for a retina specialist to begin treatment.

Diabetic patients with vision loss or symptoms should be evaluated more urgently.”

Erik Elliott knows all too well how diabetic retinopathy can steal sight.

The 39-year-old father of three was diagnosed with diabetes at age two.

Over the years, he made his vision a priority, seeing a retina specialist for regular dilated retina exams since he was a teen. Even still, poor control of his blood sugar over time led to symptoms such as floaters and resulted in severe bleeding in his eye called a vitreous hemorrhage.

Fenton football standout given Bears All-Star award On Thursday, Nov. 12, the Chicago Bears announced that senior lineman Eric Moreno of Fenton High School in Bensenville had been named the first Community High School AllStar award winner of the season. The award, brought by Athletico Physical Therapy, recognizes high school football players making a positive impact in their community and school throughout the season.

Moreno, who is on both the football and wrestling teams, has received a number of distinctions including National Honor Society, Fenton Scholars, Fenton Faces, Fenton High School Student Mentor, Illinois High School Coaches Association Academic All-State, Upstate Eight Academic All-Conference, Upstate All-Conference Player and Northwest Herald 2nd Team All-Area Football Player.

Through his work at Goldfish Swim School, Moreno has taught swim lessons for underprivileged Hispanic youth. Additionally, Moreno has spent time in the past four years volunteering with the Wood Dale-Bensenville Food Pantry, Feed My Starving Children, American Red Cross, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, World Resources Institute, UNICEF and Shriners Hospitals for Children-Chicago. has helped out at the Northwestern University food stand to help raise money for various youth programs, worked to raise money for the football program at different events and completed several service projects for the National Honor Society. Moreno is directing the $500 donation he receives for winning the award to Shriners Hospitals for Children-Chicago.

“Eric lives his life knowing that every day on this earth is a gift,” said Matthew Lynch, Fenton football coach. “He continues to work hard and give to others knowing the world is a much better place when you open your heart to those in need. Proposed new teacher standards spark controversy Religious conservatives object to ‘Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading’ standards

The Illinois State Board of Education is considering a set of new standards for teachers and administrators that are aimed at making them more sensitive to students of different cultures and backgrounds, but the proposal is sparking controversy among some religious conservatives.

The “Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading” standards would amend current standards that apply to

all teachers and administrators by adding a host of new requirements meant to ensure they understand how certain population groups have been marginalized in society and encourage them to adapt their teaching methods to be more inclusive of students with diverse cultures, family backgrounds, languages, sexual identity and orientation. “Every student deserves to feel welcome, included, and accepted at school and to see their cultural identity affirmed and represented in the curriculum,” state board spokeswoman Jackie Matthews said in a statement about the proposed standards. “This feeling of belonging is critical to improving academic and behavioral outcomes for Illinois’ students.”

Edward-Elmhurst Health: Managing your teen’s anxiety during the pandemic

Because of the global pandemic, the world is full of more unknowns than ever before. Everything feels new and different, and with the pace at which things are changing, everyone is living outside their comfort zones.

This is causing anxiety for many, which is a normal reaction to dealing with the many life changes people are experiencing. For children and teenagers, certain components of this new world can be especially anxiety-producing, such as: Social distancing: The impact of loss of leisure time and activities for children and teens has been far-reaching. At a time when peer contact is incredibly important to well-being, kids have not been allowed to socialize, attend school normally, participate in sports activities or use playground equipment. The loss of this social connection beyond their immediate family has caused a significant increase in anxiety. This may be especially challenging for children with less than ideal home lives. Additional quarantine-related problems include increased risk of depression, irritability, insomnia, anger and emotional exhaustion. A recent review shows that post-traumatic stress symptoms occur in 28 to 34%, and fear in 20%, of children in quarantine.

E-learning: The pivot to e-learning during the pandemic also causes an increase in adolescent anxiety. Frustration with the change in format or technical difficulties seem to increase anxiety while also decreasing the amount of intrinsic motivation a child feels about schoolwork. As e-learning evolves this fall, research supports creating environments that offer a balance between challenge and motivation for students to ease anxiety.

Return to school: For children and teens with anxiety, returning to school after any holiday break can result in school refusal or increased anxiety, so a similar reaction can be expected once traditional school resumes. The most common reason

for this is separation anxiety, but strong advocacy and support from parents and school representatives can be important components in the transition back.

How can parents help their child/ teen manage pandemic-related anxiety? Here are five steps to mitigate and manage its severity: 1. Be consistent. Establish routines and schedules for consistency and a sense of normalcy, such as working on schoolwork during school hours, helping kids get exercise and time out of the house, and encouraging a healthy sleep schedule. School-aged children need 1011 hours each night, while adolescents require 8-10 hours.

2. Encourage social connec tion. Help kids find ways to maintain social relationships, through social media, video calls and/or socially distant get-togethers.

3. Create a supportive environment. Spend more structured time together as a family. Schedule a game night or movie night, eat dinner together regularly, and create daily check-ins and space for kids to talk about their feelings.

4. Encourage new virtual experiences. From home, kids can tour museums and national parks, take classes (for learning and recreation), and keep in touch with their peers and extended family.

5. Focus on the family and grow together. This time offers a unique opportunity for families to become closer, and more time with caregivers can lead to increased social support. Mastering challenges can lead to personal growth, development and the ability to learn resilience for future challenges.

Parents should watch for significant changes in their child’s functioning. If a child/teen is having difficulty completing schoolwork, isolating from friends and family, sleeping a lot more or less than usual, or having trouble managing emotions, further support may be needed.

But the proposed rules have run into opposition from the Peoria-based Illinois Pro-Family Alliance, a group that regularly lobbies at the Capitol to advocate for what it calls “biblical principles from the word of God.” That group argues that the proposed standards are unconstitutionally vague, that they amount to a form of “compelled speech,” and that they infringe on the religious freedoms of individuals who adhere to what the group calls “traditional beliefs about gender and sexuality.”

“The proposed rule, if enacted, requires, as a condition of licensure, that teachers take a definite ideological stance with respect to the political and social issues it addresses,” PFA lobbyists Ralph Rivera and Molly Malone stated in written public comments on the proposal. “This requirement will create potential conflicts with the deeply held religious convictions of teachers, parents, and students in the state of Illinois. Not all teachers would be able to comply with the new standards without violating their consciences.”

Specifically, they point to language in the proposed standards that call on educators to, “Embrace and encourage progressive viewpoints and per-

spectives that leverage asset thinking toward traditionally marginalized populations,” as well as to “understand and value the notion … that there is not one ‘correct’ way of doing or understanding something, and that what is seen as ‘correct’ is most often based on our lived experiences.”

In their letter, Rivera and Malone argue that, “many religious faiths believe in the concept of “objective truth” and would take issue with what appears to be a contradictory position that says, in effect, it is an objective truth that truth does not exist.”

ISBE spokeswoman Matthews, however, said in a statement that the state board stands behind the proposed standards.

“Culturally responsive practices are especially important in better supporting Illinois’ LGBTQ+ youth, who disproportionately experience bullying and are more likely to attempt suicide,” she said. “The reality is that Illinois’ students are increasingly diverse—with more than 52 percent identifying as students of color, and English Learners making up the fastest growing student population – while our teachers remain overwhelmingly white and female,” Matthews continued. “The ability to

reach students from different cultural backgrounds is an essential skill to succeed as a teacher in Illinois today.”

The proposed standards were developed by the state board’s Diverse and Learner Ready Teachers network, a group formed in 2018 as part of a national initiative of the Council of Chief State School Officers. Illinois is one of 10 states taking part in that initiative, and it would be the first state to adopt new standards developed through the network, Matthews said.

The proposed standards were first published in the Illinois Register on Sept. 11, opening up a 45-day public comment period that expired Oct. 25.

The state board is scheduled to act on them at its Dec. 16 meeting. If the board approves them, the new rules would be published a second time, starting another 45-day period during which the proposed standards would be reviewed by the General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, or JCAR. If approved by JCAR, the standards would become part of the standards by which all teachers and administrators are evaluated. They would also be incorporated into teacher preparation programs at college and university schools of education, Matthews said.

Fall Superstars: Season for the ages Senior Cassandra Lee was a huge part of Timothy Christian girls tennis team’s undefeated season

Timothy Christian senior girls tennis standout Cassandra Lee was part of a history-making team this past fall.

Lee helped Timothy record an undefeated season, albeit it one greatly altered by the pandemic.

Still, the Trojans were extremely impressive on the courts, going 16-0-1 in dual meets, sweeping the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division tournament with champions in all five flights and winning a Class 1A season-ending sectional title (second in school history). The state tournament was canceled due COVID-19.

Lee won the individual sectional championship and finished the season with a 22-1 record. She leaves Timothy as the all-time winningest tennis player (boy or girl) with a 129-11 career mark.

But Lee’s biggest thrill this season was being able to play with her freshman sister Crystina. Crystina Lee won conference and sectional titles and finished the season 21-1.

“One thing that really stood out

for me was playing with my sister,” she said. “I had a lot of fun doing that. I really enjoyed it. We only played together once. We were supposed to play together at sectionals and state, but state got canceled and I played first singles instead. I really liked being with her on the team.

It was a special moment. I had never played with her and this was the last time I will get to play with her.

It was really cool.”

How good can her sister be? “I have high hopes for her,” Cassandra Lee said. “I think she can surpass me. I hope she does.”

Lee said this season was special for several other reasons. “We did pretty well,” she said. “We went undefeated, won conference and sectionals. Technically we qualified for state. You couldn’t ask for anything more from the team. I liked that we all got so close. All the players on the team were close friends, and to have my sister on the team that made it even more special. I’m also happy that I even had a senior season.”

Lee added walking out of Timothy as the all-time winningest ten-

nis player is special. “That also was a pretty big deal,” she said. “It was special when I realized I did it and that I even got the opportunity to do that this year. I kept asking coach (Keith Mills) if it happened or not.

I was looking forward to it and was excited to accomplish something so cool.”

As for the future, Lee wants to play tennis in college and is still working her way through that process. “I want to play tennis in college, but I don’t know where yet,” she said. “I will figure it out. I have a couple of schools in mind. The most important thing to me with a college is finding a good community in terms of school in general and the team. I’m looking for an environment where I can get a great education as well as be challenged to improve my tennis game.”

Lee said she would like to study exercise science with a minor in marketing. Her goal is to become a personal trainer. There is some family history there. Her father, Michael, is a personal trainer.

“I have been into fitness for a long time,” she said. “I love any-

thing that is devoted to it, like weight training. I’ve always been into it, but my interest went way up when I got into high school.

I’ve grown up with it and tennis has helped a lot. I want to follow

in my dad’s footsteps as a personal trainer.”

In terms of Timothy Christian’s future, the Trojans return four of their top six players from this year’s team, including Crystina Lee.

York’s Rufus headed to Indiana University-South Bend Will join NAIA school for 2021-2022 season

The best was saved for last for York senior girls basketball player Amaya Rufus.

Rufus recently signed a national letter of intent to continue her academic and basketball careers at Indiana University-South Bend, an NAIA institution.

Indiana-South Bend was the last school Rufus visited during her college selection process. “I walked through the campus and I saw the team and saw how they practiced,” she said. “It was a perfect fit. I could see myself going there and I could see myself on the team. It was the best fit. It’s also only two hours away from home so my family can see the games. It felt right when I was walking through the campus.”

Rufus was active on the recruiting trail and described the process as “weird,” given the COVID-19 restrictions in the place.

“I visited a lot of schools all around,” she said. “I reached out to a lot of schools, but with COVID a lot of schools were not able to see a lot of my games. It’s tougher talking to coaches on the phone. I also had some virtual campus visits. That was different, but it all turned out great. The virtual visits were fine, but for me personally I

need to walk around the schools and see if it is a good fit. You have to capture all that the schools can offer.”

During her travel basketball season with the Illinois Rockets this past season, Rufus noted the recruiting process had a completely different vibe. “At the different tournaments you usually have college coaches on the sidelines,” Rufus explained. “This year they could only watch through video feeds, so any interactions with coaches was by the phone or through a text or they watched on video and couldn’t see you in person.”

At the end of the day, Rufus is thrilled to be able to play the sport she loves at the next level. “This means a lot,” she said. “My college is partially paid for through the scholarship I received, and I have been given a chance to play basketball and continue the dream that now will be active through college.

It’s amazing.”

Rufus said she is considering studying pre-dental with a chemistry major. An orthodontist/dentist profession is a possibility. “I’m thinking about it,” she said. “When I had my braces on it was a cool process. All of that is interesting to me.”

Rufus gave a huge shutout to her Illinois Rockets travel team. Her dad, Cass, is the Rockets’ program director. “The Rockets were huge and pivotal in my recruiting process,” she said. “Without them, I would not have received the offers I did. They are definitely the main

reason I ended up visiting IUSB. My Rockets coach got in contact with the IUSB coach, and that’s the reason why I got the school’s attention.”

Rufus, a 5-9 guard, has been on the York high honor roll for four years and is a member of National Honor Society.

“We are very excited that Amaya chose IU South Bend,” Titans coach Steve Bruce told the school’s athletic website. “She will be a great fit in our program. She is a high-character person who excels academically and athletically.

Amaya will bring great speed and skill to the team.”

As of this past weekend, Rufus and her York girls basketball teammates were in a holding pattern, waiting on further COVID-19-related guidance later this week on if/when the 2020-2021 season can start.

“I have kind of come to terms that we might not have a senior season,” she said. “But if we do, that would be great. I made some great memories with my York teammates last season. We had some of the best times. What I miss most right now is making those relationships and getting to know my teammates even more. Hopefully we’ll be able to play.”

York is coming off a 2019-2020 season where it went 26-8 overall and won its first outright West Suburban Conference Silver Division title since 1994, and won a Class 4A regional title.

Desiree Chen elected ECCI’s 10th female Board Chair The Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry Board of Directors elected two officers and approved one appointment for its six-member Executive Committee for 2021 at its regular monthly meeting held November 10 via Zoom video conferencing.

Elected to serve one-year terms on the Executive Committee were: Chairperson—Desiree Chen, Senior Director, Communications and External Relations, at Elmhurst University.

First Vice Chairperson—Eva Sanchez, Real Estate Agent with See Your House Right Here @properties in downtown Elmhurst.

The Second Vice Chairperson position will remain unfilled until 2021.

Appointed to serve a one-year term on the Executive Committee was: Treasurer—Ralph Pechanio, Chair of the City of Elmhurst’s Veterans Memorial Commission, former community banker and longtime Chamber volunteer.

Chen, Sanchez and Pechanio will be joined on the Executive Committee by Immediate Past Chair Bill Korbel, local Sales Manager with the Elmhurst Suburban Life/Shaw Me-

dia (2001 Butterfield Road, Suite 105, Downers Grove), and ex-officio member John R. Quigley, Chamber President and CEO. Chen also becomes only the 10th female Board Chair in the Chamber’s 102-year history, all of them since 1982, with eight of those serving during John Quigley’s 21-year tenure as ECCI’s President and CEO. Preceding Chen as Board Chairs were Virginia “Ginny” Harmon (1982) of Unique Travel Service, Nancy Phillips (1988) of York State Bank, Gloria Duarte (1999) of Café Las Belles Artes, Cathy Bajkowski (2003) of CB Health Insurance, Dare Messina (2006) of L.W. Reedy Real Estate, Debra Klosterman (2007) of then-Guaranteed Rate (now Catalano & Associates), Jennifer Speaker (2012) of SMB Advantage Group, Julie Miller Sheehan (2014) of IRS Trouble Solvers and Dee Longfellow (2015) of The Elmhurst Independent.

Chen will work closely with the Chamber staff and oversee the policy-making work of the Chamber Board and its four standing committees (Marketing, Membership, Ways and Means, and Governmental Affairs), as well special committees and task forces.

Sanchez and Pechanio will serve as Chairs of the Marketing and Ways and Means committees, respectively, while Quigley chairs

the Governmental Affairs Committee. The Second Vice Chair will Chair the Membership Committee.

Chen’s Chairmanship will coincide with Elmhurst University’s Sesquicentennial celebrating the educational institution’s 150th Anniversary year. Founded in 1871, Elmhurst College changed its name to a University last July 1 to more accurately portray the wide range of undergraduate and graduate academic tracks for both traditional and adult students.

Chen has served on the Board since 2012 and on the Executive Committee for two years. First appointed to fill a Board vacancy, she was then elected to three-year Director terms in 2015 and again in 2018.

Chen served on the Executive Committee as First Vice Chair in 2020 and Second Vice Chair in 2019, and chaired the Marketing Committee in both of those years.

Sanchez served as Second Vice Chair and Chair of the Membership Committee in 2020.

Pechanio served as Treasurer and Chair of the Ways and Means Committee for a fifth appointed term.

Completing his service on the Executive Committee (and Board) was Past Chair Kevin Kost, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones Investments.
