COLOR GUARD READY TO ANSWER THE CALL

This American Legion Color Guard waits ready to perform its duties at the Veterans Day ceremony held November 11 at the Veterans Memorial in Wilder Park. It was a beautiful clear day on that Wednesday, with enough wind to allow all the flags in town to lift in salute. After the ceremony, there was a separate dedication of the new Vietnam Veterans Memorial located under a Gingko tree just to the front of Lizzadro Museum. More photos inside this issue.

Another suspicious vehicle approaches child Victim able to describe suspect, vehicle

ELMHURST — On the morning of Monday, November 16, The Independent received the following Special Bulle-

tin from the Elmhurst Police Department: On November 13, 2015, at 5:10 p.m., a male subject driving a truck similar to the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado approached a 12-year-old boy walking down the street. The subject pulled up to the child and told him “Would you help me find my dog? I’ll give you a

treat if you do, all you need to do is get in my car.” The child told the man “no” and began running to his friend’s home.

The man drove off at a high rate of speed.

The child described the subject as being a male, Hispanic, in 30s to 40s, with a hooded sweatshirt pulled close to his face. The man was lighter-

skinned, had facial hair, as well as a “C” shaped scar over his left eye. The child reported the man spoke with a deeper voice.

While looking at Internet photos the child did say a 2003 Chevy Silverado looked very similar (both in style and color) to the vehicle the subject was driving. The child stated the truck had rust on the Chevy

logo on the tailgate, the bottom of the tailgate, and the bottom of the passenger side of the vehicle. The child also reported a large dent on the tailgate and on the passenger door of the vehicle.

A color guard stands over the newly-installed stone built to commemorate the 14 young men from Elmhurst who were killed in the Vietnam War. It stands at the site where the Traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial stood for a week in 1988. A smaller memorial was placed there under a tree at that time, but this memorial is larger, more visible and serves as a better tribute to the City’s fallen soldiers.

Elmhurst gears up for 32nd Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot

ike the news coming daily from Springfield isn’t bad enough, the Independent now learns that Illinois is ranked #51 in the nation* for its handling of the federal breakfast program. This frightening statistic was delivered by Dan Gibbons, who is gearing up to hold the annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot (DGTT) on Thanksgiving Day, November 26.

“We’re #51 because they count the District of Columbia,” Gibbons told the Independent in an exclusive interview. “Yes, our free breakfast program for kids is even worse than Washington, DC, which has long held a reputation for having a poor public school system. But at least they’re feeding their school children.”

You can see and almost feel the sadness in Gibbons’ heart when he talks about his passion – allowing no person to go hungry.

“How can a student concentrate on schoolwork when all they can think about is that they are hungry?” he posed. “I know a teacher who keeps granola bars and other snacks in her drawer just for students who come to school without having eaten breakfast. It’s pretty disgraceful because it is a federal program. The funds are there.

It’s not like the state of Illinois is sitting on them.”

To the broader measure, he notes that 60,000 people in DuPage County go to bed hungry every night and 20,000 of those are children.

“It’s likely another one-third of that number includes seniors and veterans,” Gibbons said. “What do we do? How can we get that number to go down? How do we get that number to zero?”

Let’s talk lingo According to Gibbons, there’s a new word for hunger in which he finds folly – food insecurity.

“Isn’t that ridiculous?” he laughed. “I guess missing one meal is one thing, but when you aren’t sure when you will EVER get another meal, they now call that ‘food insecurity,’ that is, feeling insecure about ANY next meal. But that seems silly. Can you imagine asking a child, ‘Hey, Johnny, are you feeling food insecure? Would a hot dog make you feel more secure?’ NO! He’s hungry! Call it what it is! It’s hunger. People are just plain hungry, no matter what you call it, no matter what the fancy name is. It’s plain and simple hunger.”

Turkey Trot on tap to help out On a lighter note, the Turkey Trot is always a happy event that brings the community together on the biggest eating day of the year to help those who do not or cannot get a meal. Some people come out in costume or carry banners.

And through his hard work, the DGTT gets easier and easier every years for the participants – more and more convenient.

Last year for the first time, trolley service was available to take people from remote parking places to the registration tables. This year, the trolleys return and will drop runners and walkers right at the Elmhurst College

gymnasium inside Faganel Hall, where on-site or day-of registration takes place.

“All registration on race day will take place inside Faganel Hall on the campus,” Gibbons said. “The trolleys will drop people off right in front. The start of the race is right nearby [at Park Ave. and Cottage Hill].”

The best time to pick up your registration materials, according to Gibbons, is the Saturday prior, November 21 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 537 So. York. That will be the last chance to register at the $35 fee; day-of registration is $40.

“People who register in advance can just hop on the trolley, get dropped off at Faganel Hall, and walk over to the start of the race,” he said.

This year’s Honorary Starters are all from Elmhurst College. One will be Dr. Lawrence Carroll, Executive Director of the Center for Professional Excellence; another is Dr. John Jeffrey, Department Chair, Computer Science and Information Systems; and Paul Krohn, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Don’t look for Jim Cornelius to perform the National Anthem this year. Instead, racegoers will enjoy a patriot medley performed by the Men of Spirito! Singers.

Four arrested in Elmhurst following Chicago shooting

Charges include gun possession by gang member

ELMHURST — A shooting on the west side of Chicago resulted in four arrests taking place near Berens Park by the Elmhurst Police Department.

The Independent learned on Sunday, November 15, that Chicago police reported shots fired between two vehicles on the 3800 block of West Madison in the East Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago.

Apparently, the suspects in an attempt to escape, led officers on a chase down the I-290 Eisenhower Expressway until they lost sight of the car.

By then, Illinois State Police spotted the vehicle exiting near Elmhurst, where it stopped at Berens Park. Four suspects left the car and attempted to flee on foot, but were captured and arrested by Elmhurst police.

Officers recovered two weapons at the scene and discovered the vehicle had been stolen.

Arrested were Antonio Heard, 24, and Devonte Walton, 22, both of Chicago. They were charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member in a vehicle and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the Friday night shooting on the west side of Chicago.

The two other boys, both from Chicago, are juveniles ages 16 and 17, and therefore there names are not released.

Their crimes will be handled in juvenile court.

Police Beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Assault Nov. 10 Dylan B. Kelenzon, 21, of Kildeer, Ill., was arrested near Park and Adell at around 5:32 a.m. Police said an officer responded to the report of a cab driver who pulled a knife on another cab driver. According to police, Kelenzon and the victim had been arguing over a GPS that was sold to the victim. Kelenzon was attempting to get the victim’s attention while in his cab so he began pounding on the window of his cab, police said. When the victim got out of his cab, Kelenzon reportedly pulled a knife on him. Kelenzon was charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.

Child endangerment Nov. 9 An arrest was made at a school in the 200 block of E. Crescent at around 3:59 p.m. Police said an offender arrived at the school to pick up children at 3 p.m., and was intoxicated. The victim contacted her father via cellphone, who responded to the area to get the children. The offender was charged with endangering the life of a child.

Criminal damage to property/motor vehicle/ criminal trespass to property/motor vehicle/ damage to city property Nov. 5 A victim at a recreational facility in the 100 block of S. West told police that an unknown suspect(s) had scratched the paint on his vehicle while it was parked unattended in the facility’s parking lot.

Disorderly conduct/ mischievous conduct/ disturbance Nov. 8 Richard Bogusz, 22, of Elmhurst, was cited in the 100 block of W. Park Ave. at around 1:16 a.m. Police said an officer observed Bogusz urinating onto the roadway. He was issued a citation for disorderly conduct/befouling property.

Nov. 7 Officers responded to an area near St. Charles and Route 83 at around 2:40 p.m. to the report of a fight in progress.

Upon arrival, all involved parties had fled the scene, according to police. An officer was able to obtain information on one of the involved suspects. An investigation is pending.

Nov. 5 A suspect at a local hospital in the 1200 block of S. York Road was reportedly upset because his medical refer-

CALL 800-222-TIPS ral was not in the system, and he was going to have to pay out of pocket or reschedule his appointment. Police said after the suspect argued with staff, he said, “You are lucky I don’t shoot you guys.” The suspect left the office. No one wanted to sign complaints.

Domestic incident Police said a victim got into an argument with her father because she was trying to go stay at her boyfriend’s house instead of going to her mom’s house. According to police, the father did grab the victim to prevent her from leaving the house, but that was the only contact. The daughter agreed to go stay with her mom for the weekend as planned.

DUI/DUI-drugs/illegal consumption/ possession of alcohol Nov. 9 Decynthia Clements, 32,of Elgin, was arrested near York and Crestview at around 12:32 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Clements was found to be DUI. She was charged with two counts of DUI, improper lane usage and no insurance.

Nov. 8 Miguel Diaz, 40, of Addison, was arrested near Lake and Grand at around 2:07 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, police said Diaz was found to be intoxicated. He was charged with two counts of DUI and disobeying a traffic control device.

Endangerment Nov. 7 Cristal Huerta, 33, of Des Plaines, was arrested in the 400 block of W. Wrightwood at around 3:29 p.m. Subsequent to a call of a DUI driver, police said the vehicle was located with Huerta, who was intoxicated, and her two children. Huerta was charged with two counts of DUI, endangering the life of a child, driving while license revoked and improper lane usage.

Harassment Nov. 8 Harassment was reported in the 300 block of N. Myrtle at around 4:23 p.m.

A victim told police that he received three threatening text messages from his former son-in-law. A message was left for the former son-in-law by police informing him to have no further contact with the victim.

Nov. 7 A victim told police that an unknown suspect threated via telephone to “beat her up” and to “keep her mouth shut.”

An additional investigation is pending.

Possession of cannabis/drug paraphernalia/controlled substance/tobacco Nov. 5 • Dylan Traynor, 18, of Westchester, and Jeremy Reyes, 19, of Berkeley, were arrested at a pharmacy in the 100 block of W. North Ave. at around 10:16 p.m. Subsequent to a drug investigation, police said cannabis was recovered from the suspects’ motor vehicle.

Traynor was charged with possession of cannabis, while Reyes was charged with attempted theft by deception.

• Subsequent to the report of a suspicious auto near Cayuga and York, police said the suspects were found to be in possession of multiple prescription drugs. The suspects were released pending laboratory results.

Sale of tobacco to a minor Nov. 11 Rachel Abata, 41, of Villa Park; Bobin Baby, 18, of Westmont; and Tomy Mathew, 56, of Wheaton, were cited in separate incidents at different Shell gas stations during a city-wide tobacco compliance check. Abata was cited for unlawfully selling a pack of cigarettes to a minor at the True North Shell station in the 600 block of W. North Ave. at 6:37 p.m. Baby was cited for unlawfully selling a pack of cigarettes to a minor at a Shell station in the 300 block of W. Butterfield at around 6:41 p.m. Mathew was cited for unlawfully selling a pack of cigarettes to a minor at a Shell station in the 100 block of W. Third St. at around 7 p.m. Kristian Williams, 19, of Hillside, also was cited during a city-wide tobacco compliance check. She was cited for unlawfully selling a pack of cigarettes to a minor at a Jewel-Osco in the 100 block of E. Schiller St. at around 7:21 p.m.

Theft/burglary/ attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/ fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/ robbery Nov. 10-Nov. 11 Burglary to a motor vehicle was reported in the 400 block of N. Oak. A victim told police that unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked vehicle and removed an unspecified amount of cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes from it. The victim will sign complaints if the suspect is located.

Sept. 9-Nov. 11 A complainant in Elk Creek told police that his wife’s diamond earrings are missing. The last time they saw the earrings is around Sept. 9.

Nov. 5-Nov. 10 A victim in the 500 block of N. Willow told police he received a recruitment letter asking him to be a secret shopper for Walmart, MoneyGram and

7-Eleven. The victim followed the steps requested to deposit and withdrawal funds from his bank account. The victim completed the first transaction and became suspicious after the second transaction. It was determined the checks being deposited were fraudulent.

Nov. 9 • Keon Dillard, 19, of Northlake, was arrested at a food store in the 600 block of N. York at around 12:03 p.m. Police said Dillard was detained by store security after stealing two bottles of alcohol totaling $40.98. The suspect also admitted to stealing two bottles of alcohol on Nov. 5, according to police. Dillard was charged with two counts of retail theft.

• John K. Schlachter, 61, of Hines, Ill., was arrested at a food store/pharmacy in the 900 block of S. York at around 9:05 a.m. Police said officers responded to the report of a retail theft.

Upon arrival, Schlachter was located and found to have a valid failure to appear warrant out of DuPage County, according to police. Schlachter also was charged with retail theft and battery.

• Identity theft was reported in the 200 block of N. Ridgeland. A victim told police that an unknown suspect used her debit card to make two unauthorized purchases in Niles.

Nov. 8 • Michael Huffar, 21, of Joliet, and Sergio Lopez, 21, of Elmhurst, were arrested in the 100 block of N. Larch at around 2:11 a.m. Police said an officer observed a group of males walking at North and Maple with an American flag on a metal pole. Reader disappointed in City’s decision for veterans I attended the recent City Council meeting in support of the American Legion’s request for video gaming. My husband was a Past Commander, our children were involved in the various activities sponsored by the Post and I’ve been an Auxiliary member for well over 20 years, having served as its President on numerous occasions.

I know first-hand that the Post and Auxiliary members work tirelessly on behalf of our veterans and their families, be it sending care packages to our service personnel, giving generous donations to our various food pantries, visiting ailing veterans in hospitals and nursing homes and arranging transportation to various and sundry appointments, to mention only a few of the services we provide.

I left that meeting wondering just how many of those opposed to our request [for video gaming at the Legion post

outlets, video game, smartphone, skateboard and overthe-knee shorts manufacturers (since I’ve seen youths—and some middle-aged men, for that matter—wearing shorts in 30-degree weather), coffee shops, smartphone dealerships and movie theaters.

• I kind of miss seeing someone standing outside a Liberty Tax Service office trying to drum up business, dressed as the Statue of Liberty.

• I can’t be the only person in the suburbs who’s frustrated that more and more first-run theaters are opting for reserved seating. So much for going to a movie at the last minute and sitting wherever there’s an available seat.

• Watching the last 10 minutes of The Bachelor, to me, is quite amusing. I tune in to find out which women he’s dumped, and then watch these women fall apart as if they’ve dated him for a year.

• Speaking of reality TV, whatever happened to Honey Boo-Boo since her show got cancelled? If she’s looking for a new gig, ABC-TV should consider bringing her on The View as a co-host. Honey BooBoo can’t be any worse than

But sadly, it hasn’t been enough and so we turned to the City for help before we have to make the sad but inevitable decision to close up in this town that we’ve served for more than 100 years.

Shame on those who oppose us in our efforts to support and sustain our returning military personnel. It simply is not enough to give lip service to your appreciation of our veterans -- actions speak louder than words and it’s time to do something!

District 205 needs ‘courage to be creative’ in reallocation Moyer: figure could be approximately $2 million annually

ELMHURST — With a creative approach, Elmhurst can avoid conversations about cuts and can consider enhancements, School District 205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer stated.

“However, it must have the courage to be creative and think in terms of reallocation,” the new superintendent said. “It can avoid the classic either-or thinking trap… It just might look a little different than it did when most of us were in

school.”

At the third of four sessions of the Focus 205 community engagement sessions on November 11, he stated that if Elmhurst simply staffed at its target levels (he noted, not increased its target levels, simply staffed to it), it would have the ability to reallocate approximately $2 million annually to its achievement priorities and create sustainability in its longrange budget planning.

“The challenge, as I see it, is to relocate resources consistent with effective size research and the right drivers for improvement,” he said. “I would assert that reallocating existing resources would allow Elmhurst to support most of its priorities, including many new enhancements. This approach turns the dilemma into an

Because so many of the other expenses are fixed, staffing is one of the only areas in which districts have some measure of flexibility in their allocation decisions, according to the superintendent. Since 2009 the district has increased its staff 10.6 percent, though its enrollment has increased just 3.9 percent.

“The reality is that this trend is unsustainable,” Moyer said.

Elmhurst has the third lowest public-teacher ratio among its comparison districts at the elementary level and the lowest at the secondary level, despite the fact that class size has a negligible impact on student learning.

“Class size does not come close to making the cut of practices that most positively impact learning.”

The United States averages more minutes of instruction

annually than any other country except for Australia, and it spends more relative to its performance than any other tested country, Dr. Moyer noted.

“So what if we’ve gotten it wrong?

“What if we have poured too much money into standardized testing when that is not the way to drive improvement and at the same time worked against this country’s creativity?

“What if we have made a faulty assumption that adding staff was the answer, when in fact, it isn’t?

“What if instead, we would have poured the equivalent amount of money into helping our existing staff improve its ability to assess, rather than test and grade, to engage students rather than celebrate compliance?”

Indoor sports facility plans sought by City, Park District

ELMHURST — A request for proposals (RFPs) by the City and the Elmhurst Park District aims to find out whether there is a market for an indoor sports facility in Elmhurst.

The Park District will be the lead agency managing the study process.

The facility could include

aquatics, gymnasiums, turf and ice.

The RFP does not give any indication as to where the facility might be located. But there has been speculation about a site on the north side of Elmhurst along Lake Street, or land somewhere near York and Vallette.

The time line for selecting a firm includes: • Deadline for proposal submission Dec. 16, 2015; • Oral presentation/interviews of firms by City/Park District staff January 2016; • Review/approval by City and Park District elected officials February 2016; • Begin project early March 2016.

City, SCARCE urge residents to recycle cooking oil ELMHURST — The City of Elmhurst and the School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) are inviting residents to recycle their cooking oil after the Thanksgiving holiday. Residents can bring their used liquid cooking oil in a milk jug, bucket or other container to the Elmhurst Public Works Garage (985 S. Riverside Dr.) on Saturday, November 28, from 9 a.m.-noon.

Cooking oil sticks to sewer pipes and can cause clogs and breaks that are costly for homeowners and municipalities to fix.

Grease also interferes with the water treatment process at our sanitary facilities. Once collected, Green Grease Environmental and Chicago Biofuels will convert the cooking oil into biodiesel fuel.

Representatives from various organizations will be onsite at the collection to assist residents and ensure that only cooking oil is deposited into the recycling bin. Containers will be returned to the owner for disposal. Visit scarceecoed.org or call 630-530-3036 for more information.

Scott Levin (5th Ward), chairman of the Development, Planning and Zoning (DPZ) committee, said at a November 9 meeting that he had received calls from interested companies.

Jim Rogers, executive director for the Elmhurst Park District, said the facility could be geared toward meeting the needs of local, regional and national organizations.

The study will assess financial conditions that may have an impact on potential facil-

ity use and total revenue and operations costs, along with information regarding current trends in indoor sports facilities in the area, the demographics, inventory of other similar facilities, and the economic impact of the facility on the community.

Based on the market analysis, the firm will then analyze different facility business and operating models to assess the best fit for the Elmhurst market and recommend a model that provides for the highest

and best use, as well as the best return on investment.

This firm will make a final determination based on this assessment if the project is feasible and financially viable for the City and the Park District to pursue.

Since early 2014 the City and the Park District elected officials and staff have jointly and independently had discussions regarding the feasibility of developing and operating a new indoor sports facility in Elmhurst.

York girls swimming team headed to state Qualify in three relays, three individual events

ELMHURST — At Downers Grove North on Saturday November 14, the York Girls Swimming Sectional team qualified for State in the 200 Medley Relay, the 200 Freestyle Relay, the 400 Freestyle Relay and three individual events. This the first time York has qualified for State in all three relays. York Swim & Dive also achieved four new school records at this meet.

York placed 2nd at Sectionals behind Glenbard West Co-op with 14 teams competing. York had 1st place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay (1:48.46) (Asher, Nolte, Schlecht, Lewand), and the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:37.61) (Quinn, Lewand, Asher, Schlecht) breaking the previous York record. The 400 Free Relay placed 2nd (3:35.69) (Lewand, Orzak, Quinn, Schlecht) also breaking the previous team record.

Seniors Paula Nolte and Maggie Schlecht qualified for State in individual events. Paula Nolte had 1st Place finishes in both the 200 IM (2:10.58), breaking the team record set by her sister two years ago and the 100 Breast (1:06.13). Schlect tied for 3nd place in the 50 Free (24.46). Many other team members contributed to York’s

successful Sectional meet.

York divers Katie Fischer and Brigitte Kammerdiener (not pictured) placed 5th and 10th respectively. Fischer set a new team record with 11 dives and will move on to State. The State qualifiers will swim at the IHSA State meet at New Trier on Friday, November 20.

Jolly Old St. Nick returns for holiday concert on Dec. 4 ELMHURST — The spirit of the holiday season comes to life in Elmhurst when Jolly Old St. Nick himself makes an appearance at the second annual Jolly Old St. Nicholas Concert on Friday, December 4 from 7-8:15 p.m.

The Elmhurst Historical Museum presents an encore of last year’s popular event, which was met with much enthusiasm by pajama-clad youngsters and holiday elves of all ages. This special holiday performance will be led by Jolly Old St. Nicholas, as imagined by first-person history presenter Terry Lynch, who will share the legendary story that made him renowned around the world. St. Nick will be accompanied by the jingling bells and beautiful voices of the Elmhurst Damenchor, a Women’s Chorus that has been singing traditional German carols and songs in the area for more than 79 years. Goodie bags to fill the shoes of little ones will be shared.

The 2015 Jolly Old St. Nicholas Concert takes place at Yorkfield Presbyterian Church, located at 1099 South York Street in Elmhurst. Admission is free and on-site parking is available in the church parking lot. Children are encouraged to wear their pajamas, and photo opportunities with St. Nick will be available after the performance. Racecar driver Danica Patrick remains ‘Healthy Driven’ for EEH Returns to Elmhurst for panel discussion, cooking demo, patient visits ELMHURST — Racecar driver Danica Patrick was the featured guest at “Healthy Driven” events at Elmhurst Hospital and Edward Hospital on Wednesday, October 28. Patrick is the spokesperson for Edward-Elmhurst Health’s Healthy Driven initiative, which is designed to help people move their health forward.

At Elmhurst Hospital, Patrick took part in a panel discussion, Healthy Driven Life: Practical Advice for Busy People, in which Patrick offered tips to community leaders and Edward-Elmhurst Health system employees. The panel also included Joe Perrino, CEO, Home Run Inn Pizza; Pam Davis, System CEO, EdwardElmhurst Health; and Mary Lou Mastro, President & CEO, Elmhurst Hospital.

Patrick also visited with patients at the Nancy W. Knowles Cancer Center and took part in a cooking demonstration with Jim Roth, executive chef of Elmhurst Hospital’s Wildflower Cafe. Later she met and worked out with patients in Edward Heart Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation unit and visited with handlers and dogs of the Animal-Assisted Therapy program. Vets Day ceremony includes Vietnam memorial dedication Beautiful weather shines down, strong winds lift flags high in breeze

ELMHURST — Wednesday, November 11 was a rather typical Veterans Day in the City of Elmhurst, as about 100 people gathered at the memorial in Wilder Park next to Wilder Mansion to honor those who have fallen in our nation’s wars.

The American Legion T.H.B. Post 187 in Elmhurst, along with the VFW, the Auxiliary and the U.S. Marine Corps, DuPage Marines and VietNow, all took part in the ceremony in some way, providing the Color Guard, presenting flags, laying wreaths, placing the rifle and bayonet, helmet and boots, and placement of the cross. As it has been since WWI, the crowd turned and faced east for a

moment of silence at 11 a.m., that is, the “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.”

Bill Shanklin served as Master of Ceremonies, Ross Strahan was Officer of the Day and General John Wendel of the US. Air Force offered a history of Veterans Day, followed by a prayer.

Anne Quigley performed the National Anthem; later in the program, Brian Costello of the Shannon Rovers performed on the bagpipes.

Mayor Steve Morley offered his remarks at the podium, giving a message about the strength of a community, honoring those who fought and died for our freedom. John R. Quigley took his usual role, reading the names of the veterans we have lost in the past year. He also announced that Ralph Pechanio, long-time Chairman of the Elmhurst Veterans Commission, would be inducted into the Civic Hall of Fame for 2015 at an upcoming event of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Vietnam Memorial dedicated After the ceremony at the memorial, the entire group walked over to the middle of Wilder Park, in front of Lizzadro Museum, where a Gingko tree stands tall. It has served to “guard” the spot dedicated to the 14 men of Elmhurst who died in the War in Vietnam. The tree was planted back in 1988 to commemorate the week the Traveling Vietnam Wall Memo-

rial came to Elmhurst. Under the tree was a plaque with the 14 names, but it was groundlevel and difficult to see – many didn’t even know it was there.

Now, thanks to a group of avid volunteers, there is now a “real” memorial, a large square stone that elevates a new plaque with the Vietnam soldiers Elmhurst lost listed upon it. It is worth a visit if you haven’t been there.

As people gathered at the

updated memorial, a 21-gun salute was given followed by the dedication. A few family members of the fallen were on hand to witness. Afterwards, people admired the memorial, some not knowing there was anything in town to honor the Vietnam veterans. Now, not only is there a memorial, it is visible enough to draw visitors.

And the Gingko tree still stands tall and proud above the legacy left by those soldiers.

Kroger’s, Roundy’s merger brings Mariano’s with it Company pledges same quality, service for customers; history proves it’s true

M

ost people in Elmhurst recall the cold wintry day when Bob Mariano, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of the Roundy’s grocery chain, which also owns his namesake stores, came to town to join a ground-breaking ceremony at the former site of Elmhurst Ford to commence the building of the Mariano’s store now at that location on York Road, just north of the entrance to the I-290 Eisenhower Expressway.

Last week, the Independent learned that Kroger’s had announced its “definitive merger agreement” with Roundy’s, which adds 151 grocery outlets to its roster, including a group of stores in Wisconsin, where Kroger’s has no presence. The merger further takes in 34 Mariano’s locations in the Chicago area.

According to the release, the transaction is valued at approximately $800 million including debt. Roundy’s shareholders are to receive $3.60 per share in cash. Kroger plans to finance the transaction with debt and refinance Roundy’s existing debt of $646 million based on market conditions. Together Kroger and Roundy’s will operate 2,774 supermarkets and employ more than 422,000 associates across 35 states and photo: Independent archives the District of Columbia.

Therefore, it should be of little concern to shoppers who visit the Mariano’s store at the north end of Elmhurst.

Apparently, Kroger’s has quite a track record for acquiring “banners” – what the average person would call chain

stores. Historically, Kroger’s buys banner properties, then brings in its large operations and efficiencies to make the store run smoother and better.

But Kroger’s is careful only to make “back of the house” changes, that is, out of the customer’s eye. Any changes to the store or to the company and its employees take place where the consumer will not see it or be affected by it. They might, for example, change insurance companies or where they purchase refrigeration units, but all updates occur behind the scenes.

They prefer to leave things consistent for the customer who is used to shopping at the store. It is Kroger’s goal that customers not even notice the change in ownership.

According to Kroger’s web site, it owns more than two dozen names including Kroger, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Harris Teeter, Jay C, King Soopers, QFC, Ralphs and Smith’s.

Lawsuit to pay lottery winners draws in other states

— State Rep. Jack Franks An attorney has now asked a federal judge to disallow payment to Illinois for the winners of games in other states.

Instead, attorney Thomas Zimmerman Jr. who represents the disgruntled lottery winners, asks that the funds be deposited into an interest-bearing account that would be controlled and managed by the court system.

ELMHURST — Elsewhere in this issue, readers will find a story about how other states have joined the list of plaintiffs bent on suing the state of Illinois for fraud, citing its continuance to sell tickets without having the money to pay the prize winnings.

Later, The Independent learned via Illinois News Network that Democrats reportedly have a bill in the works that would release funds due to Illinois Lottery winners. If passed into law, House bill 4305 would release $1 billion to pay winners of the state’s lottery as well as multi-state drawings like the Mega-Millions game.

Lottery Spokesman Steve Rossi says since the budget

impasse began in July, winners of prizes more than $25,000 have been given vouchers in lieu of their cash prizes. State Comptroller Leslie Munger doesn’t have the authority to pay them, without a state budget in place.

Rossi could not say how much was owed to winners in total since the impasse began in July.

The bill needs a 71-vote supermajority since it would be effective immediately.

Governor Rauner’s office said he would veto the bill should it reach his desk without a budget in place. Democrats would either need their entire caucus to vote for the measure, or convince some House Republicans to support it. They would have to repeat the process, if the governor does veto the bill.

Lottery vendors located outside but near Illinois have reportedly seen an increase in the number of ticket sales, since the word got around that our state doesn’t pay out. In September two lottery winners filed suit in federal court, claiming the state committed fraud by selling tickets despite barring the Illinois comptroller from paying the winners until a state budget is authorized. Plaintiffs in the suit have grown to 21.

The suit asks that winners be paid what they are owed, along with 5 percent interest. It also asks that Illinois be banned

from selling lottery tickets, if it cannot pay out the winnings.

But if the state cannot sell lottery tickets, it will lose a large portion of revenue it depends upon – at a time when Illinois needs every nickel, dime and Lincoln penny.

“I’m embarrassed that [the plaintiffs] have to go this far because we haven’t done our job in Springfield,” said State Rep. Jack Franks (D-Marengo). “Illinois’ reputation is already in tatters – we’ve been a freak show for a long time.

But the fact is, this is going to severely affect the taxpayers because of the loss of revenue that we’re already realizing as a result of this.

Electric cooperative to Illinois: Pay up or lights out State receives letter warning of disconnection

SPRINGFIELD — Another vendor says it may have to cut off service to the state of Illinois because the state’s inability to pay its bills is threatening the vendor’s ability to continue doing business.

In a disconnection-warning letter dated Oct. 29, Southwestern Electric Cooperative Inc. told the state it is behind on its accounts.

“As a not-for-profit utility, Southwestern … relies on its members to pay their bill so we, in turn, can pay our bills and provide power to 22,000 homes, hospitals, schools, businesses and industries throughout the state of Illinois,” cooperative CEO Kerry Sloan wrote in the letter, a copy of which was posted Thursday on the Capitol Fax blog site.

“Your violation of our service agreement compromises our ability to provide that service and jeopardized the welfare of our membership and the general public.”

The letter says Southwest-

ern has already exceeded its policies for disconnection for lack of payment and will begin disconnections, if it does not receive payment by Dec. 1.

Southwestern spokesman Joe Richardson said he could not reveal details of the state’s accounts because the company treats the state as it would any member of the cooperative and provides the same account privacy as it would to an individual.

A spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) said that department has accounts with Southwestern for Horseshoe Lake State Park, Carlyle Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area and Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area. As of Nov. 1, the IDNR bill was at roughly $6,300.

The state’s transparency and accountability portal showed payments to Southwestern in fiscal year 2015 for electrical service for the Illinois Department of Transportation (I-DOT), about $175,000; Department of Natural Resources, about $18,200; Central Management Services, about $4,200; and Department of Corrections, about $260.

Community Health Workers are available for free in-person appointments at Health Department offices throughout the year. Timothy Christian girls volleyball team finishes third in state Trojans made first-ever finals appearance

ELMHURST — The Timothy Christian girls volleyball team’s record-setting season ended with it bringing home a state trophy.

The Trojans defeated Shelbyville 25-17, 19-25, 25-23 to take third place at the Class 2A state finals at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.

Timothy was making its firstever appearance in the state finals. The Trojans finished the season with a school-record 37-5 mark.

In the third place match, the Trojans outlasted Shelbyville, culminating in a third set that featured six ties and three lead changes.

Ava Venema led the Trojans with nine kills on 26 swings.

Kendra Teune added eight kills on 29 swings, while Tracy Westra had seven kills on 22 swings. Olivia Hoekstra had five kills, while Dani Van Laten had four kills and 23 assists.

Abby Groters had four aces and Zoe Stanton had 20 digs.

The Trojans opened play in Normal with a 25-22, 25-21 loss to eventual Class 2A statechampion Bloomington Central Catholic in the semifinals.

Teune had 12 kills on 23 swings and hit .435. Venema had eight kills, two solo blocks and hit .429. Westra had three kills and hit .333. Van Laten had 22 assists, while Stanton had eight digs.

Timothy hit .314 in the first set and .233 in the second set.

Bloomington Central Catholic held a 9-0 edge in service aces (the combined margin of victory was seven points).

Bloomington Central Catholic went on to defeat Orion 25-20, 25-21 in the Class 2A title match. Bloomington Central Catholic finished the year with a 35-5 mark. Orion came into the match unbeaten at 40-0.

Earlier, Timothy advanced to the state finals with a threeset victory over Watseka in the Class 2A Beecher supersectional, plus victories over Chicago Latin School and Westmont in the Class 2A Guerin Prep sectional.

ELMHURST — The IC Catholic Prep football team is a step closer to its ultimate goal.

The Knights hit the road and came away with a 37-12 win over the Princeton co-op team in the Class 3A state quarterfinals.

The win moves IC Catholic Prep (111) into the Class 3A state semifinals this weekend against Kankakee Bishop McNamara (11-1). That game will be played either Friday or Saturday in Elmhurst at Plunkett Athletic Complex.

Bishop McNamara is the only team to defeat IC Catholic Prep this year. That happened in Week 1 in a game played in Kankakee. Since then, IC Catholic Prep has won 11 games in a row.

In the win against Princeton, running back Jordan Rowell led the way with 211 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

In the Knights’ three playoff games thus far, they have outscored opponents by a combined tally of 130-26.

The winner of the IC Catholic PrepMcNamara game heads to the Class 3A state-championship game Friday, Nov. 27 at 4 p.m. at Huskie Stadium on the campus of Northern Illinois University against either St. Joe-Ogden (12-0) or Tolono Unity (9-3). Ogden is the No. 1 seed on the bottom half of the Class

3A bracket. Unity is the No. 10 seed. IC Catholic Prep is the No. 3 seed on the top half of the 3A bracket, while McNamara is the No. 5 seed.

In IC Catholic Prep’s second-round playoff win against Elmwood-Brimfield, quarterback Luke Ricobene completed 22 of 30 passes for 280 yards and five touchdowns.

Rowell ran for 149 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns. Lazerick Eatman ran for 70 yards on 12 carries.

Pat Guinan caught three passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Luke Calles caught seven passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. Garrett Cheng caught six passes for 75 yards and a touchdown, while Pat Jordan had four catches for 58 yards and a score. Rowell caught two balls for 27 yards.

The Knights racked up 527 yards of

total offense in the game (247 rush an 280 pass).

On defense, Jim Kenneally had 15 total tackles and two tackles for loss.

Anthony Silva and Jordan each had 12 tackles.

Kenneally and Kemon Reese each had one quarterback sack. Matt Sutton had an interception, while Frank Soto had a pass deflection and Kenneally had a fumble recovery. Jack Lamborn caused the fumble. Sam Buffo kicked six extra points.

After 11 games, Ricobene had thrown for 2,090 yards and 24 touchdowns (against only 8 interceptions).

Rowell had 1,333 rushing yards (8.8 yards per carry) and 21 touchdowns.

York girls basketball team loaded with potential Dukes start season without veterans Polte and Backman

ELMHURST — The York girls basketball team hasen’t enjoyed the ideal start to its preseason.

The Dukes have been without the likes of seniors Kelly Polte and Megan Backman. Polte has been sidelined by illness, while Backman, the team’s leading returning scorer from a year ago, has been slowed by knee injuries.

“It’s certainly not how we wanted to start, but we will go with it and keep pushing forward,” said York coach John Constable. “Other players will have to step up.”

York is coming off a 2014-2015 campaign where it went 21-8 and tied for second in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division with a 9-3 mark.

Constable noted two keys for the Dukes out of the gates will be the play of seniors Kristen Viola and Ellen Foley.

“We need both of them to step up,”

he said. “Kristen is a 6-1 guard who can play all five positions and defend all five positions. She will be big for us.

Ellen is a senior who has the ability to knock down shots from the perimeter.

We’ll need that. I think both of them have the ability to step up big-time for us. Kristen had a tremendous summer and Ellen also had a nice summer and a great golf season (state qualifier). Her confidence level as a senior is going to help her contribute.”

Other key pieces to the puzzle for the Dukes include junior point guard Jackie Saco, who was the starting point guard on last year’s sophomore team that won the conference title. “She’s done a nice job the last week-and-a-half running things at point guard,” said Constable.

Sophomores Caylin Rufus (6-0 guard), Hailey Walker and Danielle Dennis will also contribute for the Dukes. “Caylin is one of the more skilled players that has come through here,” said Constable. “She can handle the ball and shoot the ball and is getting better every day. She’s really focused her effort on the defensive end. Hailey Walker is a guard who we expect to see

quality varsity minutes and Danielle Dennis was a freshman we kept on the varsity the whole year last year. She’s really matured over the summer. She’s a really good athlete and we expect her to be one of our leading rebounders. She can jump out of the gym.”

Freshman Kathleen Levins (5-10 center) also figures to be in the mix. “Kathleen is tough as nails,” said Constable.

“She works extremely hard. It’s likely she’ll see a ton of quality varsity minutes.”

Constable isn’t worried about the relative youthfulness of his group. “Young skill is never a bad thing,” he said. “It’s a matter of getting everybody from freshman to senior to gel and play together as a team. We might be a team that takes it’s knocks early in the season, but by mid- to late-season we could be a very good team. This is a very skilled team.

They could be a good shooting team from the perimeter. We are going to try some different things with some brandnew offensive concepts. And we might play some zone and try some other new things. You have to see what this team is good at and you won’t know unless

you try things with them. That takes some time.”

Constable is expecting a competitive race in the WSC Silver. “I think it’s anybody’s contest this year,” he said.

“I don’t know that there is a favorite.

Lyons Township won the conference last year and they lost key kids. Hinsdale lost key girls. Proviso West played a ton of young girls last year and bring back a solid group this year. It’s nice and wide open.”

Overall, Constable likes the group he has heading into the season, which opens this week with the York tournament.

“I say this every year, but we have some of the best kids around,” he said.

“They are really good kids who work hard and want to do well. That’s all you can ask as a coach.”

Constable said this week’s tournament, which features the Dukes playing five games in six days, will give him an instant report on where his team is at.

“It’s a very competitive field,” he said. “It will put us in a very good position to see where we are at heading into conference play.”

Timothy Christian girls basketball team looking to take next step Trojans improved win total by nine games last year

ELMHURST — It’s been kind of deserted around the Timothy Christian girls basketball camp of late.

Coach Michele Strube has been operating with a threadbare roster in the preseason, but that’s for good reason. A majority of her players were part of the Timothy girls crosscountry and girls basketball teams that qualified for the state finals.

“We’re a little behind to start the season,” she said. “It’s been a little challenging at first with

numbers, but they will be back soon. We’ve been combining the JV with the varsity in practice which has been good. We have a new JV coach this year so it’s been nice to be with her the first eight or nine days and being able to see that younger group.”

The Trojans have been without the likes of volleyball players Alison DeBoer (senior forward), Emily DeBoer (sophomore center), Grace Miller (senior forward), Hope Zastrow (junior forward), Olivia Hoekstra (junior guard) and Dani Van Laten (senior guard), as well as cross-country runner Nicole Terpstra (senior forward).

When those players return Strube will have plenty to work with coming off a 2014-2015 season that saw the Trojans finish 14-13 overall. The year

before Timothy was 5-22. Timothy finished 8-4 and took third in the Metro Suburban Conference East Division a year ago.

“We will be pretty guard heavy this season,” said Strube. “We don’t have a lot of height but we do have athletic guards.”

Junior Allison Zeilstra (guard) is back to run the point.

She is coming off a knee injury this past spring. “She hasn’t played since March,” said Strube. “She’s getting back into basketball form and we plan on her being the heart of the team and a leader of the team. She plays hard, works hard on her skills and is fun to be around.

We’re happy to have her back.”

Hoekstra and Van Laten also give the Trojans two additional weapons at the guard positions.

Van Laten, the standout setter

on the volleyball team, did not play last year.

“Olivia came on strong at the end of last season and had a great summer for us,” said Strube. “Dani is back and we’ll look for that same leadership she provided in volleyball.

Those three girls (Zeilstra, Hoekstra and Van Laten) are a fun combination and will help us out.”

Strube said another player who has made key strides is Zastrow. “She’s a junior with a great work ethic and she’s an animal inside,” she said. “I expect a lot out of her defensively and with her rebounding.”

The team also features senior guard Ellie Wiener, along with junior guards Danielle Beard and Tyra Hopson.

“It’s a good group,” said Str-

ube. “We don’t have any superstars, but we have a lot of players who are good. It’s going to be a team effort. We’re small and we’re quick and we’re learning how to use that speed.

We’re a little more defensiveminded and guard-heavy this season.”

Strube would like to see her team take another step up in the MSC East this season. “I expect us to be right there again,” she said. “Chicago Christian won it last year but they lost quite a few girls. It’s been us, Chicago Christian and Illiana Christian in the past. Hopefully we can come out on top this time. We saw a lot of really good things from these girls this summer.

We’re excited about this season.”

York girls swimming qualifies three relays, three individuals for state Dukes finish fourth in West Suburban Conference Silver Division

ELMHURST — It was a great day for the York girls swimming team at the Downers Grove North sectional.

The Dukes won four sectional titles and qualified three relays and three individual swimmers for this weekend’s state finals meet.

As a team, York finished

second in the sectional behind Glenbard West.

York won the 200 medley relay sectional title with a time of 1:48.46. That team featured junior Winona Asher, senior Paula Nolte, senior Maggie Schlecht and junior Sarah Lewand.

York also won the 200 relay with a time of 1:37.61. That group included sophomore Meghan Quinn, Lewand, Asher and Schlecht.

The Dukes also qualified for state in the 400 relay after finishing second with a time of 3:35.69 with Lewand,

junior Allie Orzak, Quinn and Schlecht.

Nolte won both the 200 IM and breaststroke sectional titles. She’ll swim in three events at state. Nolte won the IM in 2:10.58 and the breaststroke in 1:06.13.

Schlecht tied for third in the 50 free and qualified for state with a time of 24:46.

Katie Fischer finished fifth in diving and earned a state spot with 374.25 points.

In earlier action, the Dukes

placed fifth at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet.

York was fourth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:54.08. That team included Asher, Nolte, Schlecht and Lewand.

Quinn was eighth in the 200 with a time of 2:02.72.

Lewand was ninth with a time of 2:02.93.

Nolte took fifth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.49. Orzak was 11th at 2:27.54. Schlecht was sixth in the 50 with a time of 25.8. Asher was seventh with a time of 26.1

Meaghan McIntyre was eighth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.88. Mary Phelps with 12th with a time of 1:10.04.

Quinn took sixth in the 100 with a time of 56.86. Orzak was eighth with a time of 57.46.

Lydia Faber was ninth in the 500 with a time of 5:42.63.

McIntyre was 10th with a time of 5:46.91.

York took fourth in the 200 relay with a time of 1:42.18.

That group included Quinn, Lewand, Asher and Schlecht.

Getting offensive

etween them, Timothy Christian juniors Ava Venema and Kendra Teune had more than 500 kills this season.

But Teune said there’s a bigger reason why the Trojans advanced to the Class 2A state finals for the first time in school history.

“All four of our seniors and captains took a great leadership role,” she said. “They led this team and wanted all of us to play our very best.”

Teune added other factors were at work as well. “There has been a lot of communication between everyone,” she said. “We’ve been working very hard at getting our defense stronger and we have a front row that is very tall and puts up

a strong block, which has been very helpful.”

Venema added: “Communication has helped us a lot.

“The back row knows who is getting the ball and that helps Dani (senior setter Van Laten) to know who to set the ball to. Dani and I improved a lot mainly because of communication. That’s helped us work a lot on a faster pace so we can run a faster offense.”

Teune noted opposing teams had much more to be concerned with this season than just shutting down Teune and/ or Venema. “It’s not often a team could shut down Ava. She’s a very strong player,” she said. “But even when teams shut myself or Ava down, we have other players who are very strong. It’s not too difficult for us to change things up.

tant to stay strong for our team and help out any way we can.”

Venema, who had 297 kills going into the state finals, added: “A bunch of us are out there doing our jobs. That’s what we have focused on. It’s what we have to do. We’re not focused on what is on the other side of the net.”

Teune also lauded the efforts of captain Van Laten. “Dani is a great setter,” she said. “She’s a key component to the team’s success. She’s able to put the ball where our hitters need it no matter where the pass is. She consistently puts the ball where you need it.”

Teune, who had 296 kills and 49 service aces heading into the state finals, credits Timothy coach Scott Piersma with her improvement this year. “He taught me a lot about keeping the ball in front of me and

not behind me,” she said. “I’ve improved my hitting and I’ve been working on different shots so the other side doesn’t know what to expect.”

Piersma has seen both players take the next step this season.

“Ava and Kendra have been huge for us this year,” he said.

“They played as sophomores on the varsity last year and have really stepped up after we graduated eight seniors last year.”

Teune and Venema, who play club volleyball in the off-season (Teune for IPV and Venema for 1st Alliance), said the atmosphere around school has been electric with the constant stream of fall sports teams qualifying for state tournaments. All of Timothy’s fall sports teams qualified for their respective state finals events (volleyball, tennis, soccer and

cross-country). The boys soccer team won the Class 1A state title.

“It’s been really crazy and super-fun,” said Venema. “The soccer guys winning was very exciting. The school has a lot of team spirit. It’s been pretty crazy for us because it’s the first time a girls volleyball team has gone downstate.”

Teune added: “The support of the other students, the teachers and administrators at school has been absolutely amazing.

They’ve been a big part of us being able to do this. It’s an incredible feeling to go to state.

It’s been great how much success the other teams at school have had. My brother (Connor, a freshman) was on the soccer team. There is a lot of spirit and energy at school.”

Timothy Christian freshman Abygale Ahn took Banks’ words to heart this fall by, indeed, playing two.

Ahn was part of the Timothy Christian girls tennis and girls volleyball teams that each advanced to the state finals.

Ahn helped Timothy Christian’s girls tennis team win its firstever sectional title and send, also for the first time in program history, a maximum six players to the state meet. Ahn competed in the singles tournament at state and won one match there.

Ahn also was promoted from the Timothy junior-varsity girls volleyball team to the varsity team and was on the roster during the team’s postseason run that culminated in it advancing to the Class 2A state finals for the first time in program history.

“I thought I would have to make a choice between the two sports,” said Ahn. “I really wanted to do both. At the beginning of the season I talked to the athletic director (Jack LeGrand) and talked to both coaches (Keith Mills and Scott Piersma) and they said it would be possible to do both. I’m thankful my coaches were understanding and were flexible so I would be able to do both.”

Ahn noted she would practice as often as possible with each team and ended up missing several contests in both sports. “I would squeeze in practices with each sport and sometimes do both in one day,” she said. “Everybody has been so understanding about this. I wouldn’t be able to do it if everybody wasn’t so flexible.”

Ahn admits there was a balancing act involved with the two sports and her academic schedule. “You have to focus on your time,” she said. “Once I get home from practice or a game I have to sit down and study and do my homework. I have to take advantage of any time I have and get things done. It’s been a learning experience.”

Ahn started playing tennis when she was five and ramped up her interest in it when she was nine. She plays in USTA events during the off-season.

“I saw some older kids playing and wanted to play,” said Ahn, who rebounded from a preseason ankle injury. “I started seeing kids playing in tournaments and that’s when I wanted

As for keeping up her fall double duty, Ahn is all for it.

“I plan on doing both for all four years if it’s possible,” she said.

ELMHURST — The York hockey club is collecting toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s “Toys for Tots” program. Bring new, unwrapped toys to the varsity and junior varsity home games on Friday, Dec. 4 at the Addison Ice Rink, 475 Grace St., Addison.

York student Nicole Polizzi will sing The Star-Spangled Banner before hockey action kicks off at 7:05 pm for the junior varsity and the puck drops at 8:40 p.m. for the varsity match. Both teams play Oak Park River Forest (OPRF) hockey club.

The collected toys will be presented to a U.S. Marine Corps reservist before the varsity game. Toys should be new and unwrapped. No stuffed animals or toy weapons.

Hockey Checks Hunger York hockey is also partnering with OPRF Hockey to collect food donations for their “Hockey Checks Hunger” campaign. Non-perishable food items donated at the Dec. 4 games will be presented to OPRF Hockey when the teams face off again on Sunday, Dec. 6 at Ridgeland Commons in Oak Park.

Stacked with talent

ELMHURST — If there’s anything that will help a firstyear coach out, it’s a talented roster.

And that’s exactly what firstyear IC Catholic Prep coach Kelsey James has this fall.

The Knights return many key contributors from last year’s team that finished fourth in the state for the second time in as many seasons.

“Returning all these girls definitely helps,” said James, who previously was a head coach at Mt. Assisi Academy. “We have a lot of experience and we have a team with a lot of height and those things will help us with a lot of the things we are trying to accomplish.”

Back from last year’s teams are the likes of Anjella Farmer (6-0, F-C, senior), Leslie Montoya (6-1, C, senior), Tess Reardon (5-8, G, junior), Claire Gibler (5-10, G-F, sophomore), Kiersten King (5-9, G-F, sophomore), Georgia Mahnke (6-0, F, sophomore) and Sophie Zanoni (5-4, G, sophomore). Key newcomers include 5-4 freshman guard Jada Smith and senior transfer Lilly Brown (5-8, C, senior).

James said the team will use some components from last year’s team on offense and defense, and also will introduce some new concepts. “We’ve kept some of the same stuff and we’ve added more defensive things such as a few more pressures,” she said. “We’ll change up the defense quite often. We

ELMHURST — IC Catholic Prep senior Pat Guinan knows exactly why the IC Catholic Prep football team has enjoyed sustained success this fall.

“It’s how close we are,” he said. “In the off-season we worked together and we worked hard. We got in the weight room and worked hard and it’s showed on the field. The atmosphere with the team is great and that shows on the field. It’s like a brotherhood here.”

Guinan added it simply wasn’t acceptable for the team to finish 4-5 last year. “We had a rough season last year,” he said. “We had higher expecta-

tions than 4-5. At the end of last season some of us got together and decided that we wanted to have a good season. We wanted to do something about it. So we worked hard and we kept working hard and formed a bond through that hard work.”

Guinan has contributed this season on both side of the ball as a tight end on offense and as a cornerback in the defensive secondary.

“We spend a lot of time on blocking in practice,” he said of his tight-end exploits. “We spend a lot of time on blocking on the edge and that helps our guys get into space.”

McNamara has scored 428 points this season and has allowed 231 points. McNamara is 5-1 against teams with winning records this season. Its only loss was a 70-40 setback to St. Laurence.

were a good defensive team last year. We not only have the height but we have some quick guards and that will allow us to set more traps with our defense.”

James sees her team as having the ability to score both from the outside and inside. “It will be a little bit of both, but we’ll do more of our scoring from the inside,” she said.

With a large number of returning players, team chemistry, James said, has been outstanding thus far. “The chemistry is great,” she said. “With most of the girls having been on the team last year, they play well together and have already bonded very well. That makes my job a lot easier.”

James said past accolades such as last year’s state run will not

automatically produce results this season. “This is a very motivated group,” she said. “We’re trying not to put too much pressure on them with what they’ve done in the past. We don’t want them to come out and assume it will happen again.”

James said her first few months on the job have gone quite well.

“It’s been really good,” she said.

“I’ve received good feedback form the girls and they have been really open to what I have implemented and to my style of coaching. It’s been an easy and successful transition.”

James said Gibler and Farmer, in particular, have caught her eye in preseason work. “Anjella is a returning captain and starter,” she said. “She sets the tone of what we want to do in practice

and what we want out of everyone. Claire has shown that she has matured from her freshman season last year.”

Farmer, Montoya and Reardon are the team captains.

James knows her team will be tested in the Metro Suburban Conference West Division.

“We’ll have tough games,” she said. “Riverside-Brookfield and Aurora Central are two good teams. We are hoping that this year we can be up there and close to the top.”

IC Catholic Prep opened the season earlier this week against Oak Forest and is in the midst of its own tournament that features the likes of Chicago Christian, Nazareth Academy, Elmwood Park, Regina, Evergreen Park, Westmont and Luther North.

Naval Academy-bound senior Pat Guinan is a key contributor to the success of the IC Catholic Prep football team son. “As a whole our defensive backs are more aggressive,” he said. “We are coming up and making big plays. A lot of the teams we play they don’t expect our defensive backs to come up and make a lot of tackles, but that’s what we are doing.”

While IC Catholic Prep may have some players with some gaudy statistical totals, Guinan said there are others up and down the roster who have contributed efforts of equal importance throughout the season.

“Everyone playing does their job,” he said. “When everyone does their job that makes a difference. We are getting people to the ball on defense and we’re hitting people and we’re aggressive. That aggressiveness has helped us.”

Guinan is one of the team

captains this season. “I like being a leader,” he said. “I’ve been focusing on developing my leadership skills. But everybody on the team is a leader, it isn’t just one or two guys. It doesn’t matter if you are a captain or not, everybody leads by example. We have mutual respect for each other. Anybody on the team could have been a captain.

We’re all leading out there and trying to win games.”

Guinan has a bright future ahead of him. He’s headed to the United States Naval Academy to continue his studies.

“My family has been members of the military and my brother, Tommy (2014 IC Catholic Prep grad), is there right now,” said Guinan. “I always knew I wanted to serve my country. Both my grandpas were in the Navy

Cheng had 21 catches for 331 yards and four touchdowns, while Guinan had 14 catches for 278 yards and four touchdowns. Rowell had 29 catches for 405 yards and one score.

Rowell had 1,996 all-purpose yards through 11 games (1,333 rushing, 405 receiving, 109 kick return, 195 punt return and 31 interception yardage).

Kenneally was leading the team in tackles with 142, including 19 tackles for loss.

Silva had 92 tackles and Jose Rodriguez had 87. Kenneally also was the team leader in quarterback sacks with 20 for a combined 167 yards in losses.

He also had 19 quarterback hurries.

Sutton was the team leader in interceptions with five. Guinan had nine pass deflections, while Kenneally had five fumble recoveries and seven caused fumbles.

Rowell was the team leader with 25 touchdowns through 11 games. Jordan had eight. Buffo made 49 extra points and two field goals.

Guinan, a straight-A student at IC Catholic Prep is in the midst of a rigorous application process. He already has received a conditional acceptance to Annapolis and is waiting on getting a congressional nomination.

“I’ve applied with our two state senators and our congressman in our district and am waiting to hear back,” he said. “I am extremely fortunate and really grateful to my school and to my family for providing me with this opportunity. I can’t wait to go there. I’m so excited. It’s what I’ve wanted to do and now I have an opportunity to do it. I always had the idea in the back of my head and then I really started looking into it at the end of my freshman year when my brother got in there. By my junior year I knew for sure this is what I wanted. I haven’t really envisioned a life other than being an officer. I have a lot of opportunities ahead of me.”

Guinan couldn’t be happier with how his senior football season has gone. “This season has been so much fun,” he said.

“This is the most meaningful team I’ve played on. It’s been great being with these guys.

Once the playoffs started all we’ve said to each other is we want one more week. This season has been a blast. I couldn’t ask for more.”

The 2015 York boys volleyball team was recently honored as an American Volleyball Coaches Association all-American academic team. The Dukes were only one of seven boys teams in Illinois to earn that designation.

Additionally, York is one of only eight boys teams in the country to have won the award in each of the last five years.

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball captains earn all-conference honors York boys volleyball team wins national academic award

ELMHURST — IC Catholic’s girls volleyball team’s captains were recently rewarded for their accomplishments on the court.

Seniors Claudia Koch and Kerry Mulligan and junior Tess Reardon were named to the allMetro Suburban Conference West Division team.

“Claudia, Kerry and Tess were captains and were definitely leaders,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Nancy D’Amore.

Koch, Mulligan and Reardon helped the Knights go 24-12 and reach the finals of the Class 3A Lisle regional.

Reardon, a setter-outside hitter, finished the season with 308 kills (3.71 per set) and had 335 assists. She also had 298 digs (3.59 per set) to go with 33 service aces.

“Tess is a versatile, athletic, all-around threat for us,” said D’Amore. “She shared setting duties in a 6-2 offense and when she wasn’t setting, she was attacking on the outside. I am definitely looking forward to having her back next year.”

Reardon led IC Catholic Prep in kills this season.

Koch, an outside hitter, had 300 kills (3.61 per set) to go with 233 digs (2.80 per set).

“Claudia moved from middle blocker (where she played in the 2013 and 2014 seasons) to an outside attacker this year because we needed her to get more offensive touches on the ball and utilize her ball control and defense,” said D’Amore.

“She is a tough competitor who seemed to always rise to the occasion when we needed her.”

Mulligan, a libero, ended the season with 353 digs (4.25 per set) and had 52 service aces.

“Kerry is a dynamic defender and was by far our most consistent passer this season,” said

D’Amore. “She anchored the defense, making some spectacular saves, but most importantly she was a steady force with her ball control that frustrated opponents.”

Six York student-athletes sign letters of intent Six York student-athletes recently signed national letters of intent to continue their athletic careers.

Cam Dobrotka will play lacrosse at Wittenburg University in Ohio. Will Gunst will continue his golf career at Mercer University in Georgia.

Tommy Helton will wrestle at Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville.

Jordan Less will golf at Northern Illinois University, while Gabby Magnifico will play softball at Valparaiso University. Alexandra Preuss will play volleyball at Lewis University.

One of only 29 boys teams in the nation to receive the award (one of only seven in Illinois), the AVCA honors teams with at least a cumulative 3.3 gradepoint average on a 4.0 scale.

Furthermore, York is one of only eight schools in the country to be honored with this award in each of the past five seasons.

2015 varsity team members included captains John Kopach, Robert Krissinger, Jacob Wendell and Daniel Bolivar, Rio Diaz, Gordon Johnson, Andrew Lewand, Zachary Mathiasen, Casey McNamara, Kevin Peronto, Jake Privett, Jonathan Schierl and AJ Weber.

The team is coached by Ken Dowdy.

York girls tennis The York girls tennis team ended up in 28th place out of

more than 300 teams that had representation at the state tournament.

“I was pleased with the way things came together this season,” said York coach Tres Heimann. “This team grew up really fast and competed very well in this tournament.”

The Dukes have finished with at least eight points at the state tournament in each of the last 14 seasons.

Each of York’s five state qualifiers were making their first state appearance. The doubles team of Abby Brigman and Alex Hennessy went 3-2 at state. Hennessy finished the season with a team-best 24 wins. Brigman finished with 23 wins.

The doubles team of Claire Meyer and Julia Riddle went 2-2 at state. Meyer won 22 matches this season. Riddle finished with 18 wins.

Singles player Maja Shaw won one match at state and ended with 13 wins this season.

York hockey club wins big over Naperville North High School ADDISON— Friday the 13th proved to be good luck for the York hockey club. York’s varsity squad played host to the Naperville North High School Huskies that evening and cruised to a 9-0 victory.

The win improved the Dukes’ Illinois High School Hockey League West Division record to 8-1-3.

York jumped out to a lead early when senior Will Borrows passed the puck across ice to fellow senior Cam Dobrotka on the point. Dobrotka took a

slap shot that beat the Naperville North netminder. Soon thereafter it was Borrows turn.

He took a pass from senior Grey Miller and scored from the point on a slap shot of his own.

A few minutes later, the Dukes scored on a give-andgo when junior Elliott Fafinski carried the puck low in the offensive zone and made a pass to junior Jack McDonnell in the slot. Fafinski then scored after McDonnell set him up with a pass right in

front of the net. York scored again to make it 4-0 just before the end of the first period when McDonnell delivered a wrist shot over the goalie’s shoulder on an assist by senior Joe Levin.

The Dukes picked up right where they left off after the intermission when junior Tom Sieracki set up junior Zach Johnson with a pass and Johnson delivered a high wrist shot that found the back of the net.

McDonnell scored 43 seconds later on assists by Levin and

Borrows.

Just before the end of the second period freshman Billy Paschen got in on the act when he tipped a shot from Burrows that was re-directed past the Huskies goalie.

In the third period Burrows recorded his fourth point of the game on an assist to Fafinski. Then Miller closed out the scoring when he scored an unassisted goal to give York the nine goal lead.

The win came on the heels of York’s junior varsity team’s 5-0 win over the Huskies’ jv squad. Junior goalie Parker Stasica earned the shut-out victory to improve York’s junior varsity team’s league record to an impressive 12-0-0.

York returns to the ice when the teams will play host to Naperville Central at Addison Ice Arena on Friday, November 20th.

twice, we knew it would be a tough match. They have an outstanding hitter. The rest of their team does a good job keeping the ball in play for her.

It was nice to have a match where we needed to fight a little and show what we have. It was a tough match. That third set was back and forth. Their outside hitter had 30 kills and we weren’t doing bad things.

She was doing good things by hitting in different spots. It was good to get past them. With Latin, every set we started down a little bit and then we had to respond and fight back.”

Piersma noted the opposite was the case in the win over Westmont in the sectional final.

“Against Westmont we did a good job of jumping out ahead in sets,” he said. “We took control in the beginning and made them fight back. It was nice to be the aggressor.”

Timothy again went to three sets against Watseka. “We didn’t know anything about them,” said Piersma. “We did have someone go watch them. They run some interesting stuff. One girl played middle two rotations and outside another one. We dominated in the first set. I told the girls they would come back out real hard against us. They went downstate last year. We know they would keep pushing and they did. They imposed their will and we got down big. We went down hard.”

Timothy was down 20-11 in the second set, but lost only 25-23. “We ended on a 12-5 run, which set us in motion for the third set,” said Piersma.

“We got the down quickly in the third set and put an end to it (25-12).”

Teune had 16 kills in the win against Watseka. “Kendra was unstoppable,” said Piersma.

“They had no response. Ava did well and had six kills, but they had a big middle. That allowed a lot of 1-on-1 opportunities for Kendra.”

Piersma also lauded the play of Hoekstra. “Olivia did great,” he said. “She had five or six kills and kept the ball in play by doing what she needs to do.”

Van Laten also helped the Trojans from the service line in the sectional final and the supersectional match. “Dani was on fire from the service line,” said Piersma. “Dani is an all-around captain who showed what it takes. She led us by example.”

Timothy’s 37-win total eclipses the previous school record of 36 (set by two different teams).
