The win pushed IC Catholic Prep to 12-0 and sends it to the Class 4A state semifinals Saturday at home against Richmond-Burton (11-1), which was a 17-14 winner on the road against Coal City in the quarterfinals. The other semifinal contest pits No. 4 Rochester (11-1) at No. 3 Bishop McNamara (11-1).

McNamara’s only loss this season was a 21-20 setback in Elmhurst to IC Catholic Prep in Week 4.

In the high-scoring affair against Marengo, the Knights led 15-13 after the first quarter and 29-20 heading into intermission.

The Knights outscored Marengo 6-0 in the third quarter and 14-7 in the final stanza.

On the ground, the Knights rolled up an impressive 422 yards on 42 carries with standout sophomore Kyle Franklin piling up 338 yards rushing on 31 carries. He also scored six touchdowns.

Through 12 games, Franklin has run for 1,961 yards on 208 carries (9.4 yards per carry) and has 32 rushing touchdowns. IC Catholic Prep averaged 305.8 rushing yards per game.

York grad, musician meets up with famous actor Elmhurst resident meets movie star while hitchhiking in Australia

The Elmhurst Independent just loves to bring its readers the exciting news when a current or former resident has a brush with someone famous.

Growing famous on his own as a musician, Elmhurst resident Scott Hildebrand has already performed at various venues throughout the U.S. and other countries and has been currently living in Australia on a oneyear work visa.

“He came home to be best man in a friend’s wedding in Mexico,” his mother Lesa Hildebrand told the Independent in an exclusive interview.

“Scott had never hitchhiked before, so he flew back to Brisbane and decided to hitchhike back to Byron Bay.” While on the road with his thumb extended, a vehicle came up and began driving around him, circling several times to see if he “looked safe,” they told Scott later. Scott was cautious himself, but decided if the car had surfboards, then “these guys must be surfers, so they must be okay.” Apparently, the occupants of the vehicle felt the same way.

After driving a short while, they told Scott they would have to stop

and get another vehicle, which gave him pause. Should he be worried?

What does this mean? At that point, Scott offered to pitch in for gas, to which Hemsworth said, jokingly, “It’ll be $4,000!” Scott still didn’t know who his drivers were and was even more stunned when the car drove up to a helipad!

Realizing he was about to take a helicopter ride, Scott finally asked point-blank: “Who ARE you guys?!”

The gentleman driving said he was a personal trainer, “and this is Chris Hemsworth.”

Hemsworth, who hails from Melbourne, has starred in such films as Star Trek (2009), Thor (2011) and The Avengers (2012), They flew in the helicopter and landed right in Hemsworth’s driveway, where he told Scott his personal trainer could drive him home “in Matt Damon’s car!”

“It blew my mind because they were so nice,” Scott said. “They seemed like normal surfers! In the helicopter, I was freaking out, like no way is this real!”

The best part was that the helicopter ride was recorded on video and put on Hemsworth Instagram page.

The music that plays in the background of the video is a song called “Ready To Fly,” which Scott Hildebrand had written himself.

“It’s overwhelming and amazing that he did that,” Scott said.

Eventually, Scott got back to Byron Bay, no worse for wear after his experience.

It appeared on several television news programs and was even a short feature in the Nov. 12, 2018, issue of People Magazine.

That is the tale of an Elmhurst resident – who went to Hawthorne School, Sandburg Middle School and graduated from York High School in 2009 – and ended up meeting a celebrity while hitchhiking in Australia, which resulted in a helicopter ride! Now that’s a story!

City earns AAA bond rating for 5th consecutive year On Nov. 5, the City of Elmhurst was informed that Standard and Poor’s (S&P) Global Ratings assigned the AAA rating to the Series 2018 General Obligation (GO) Bonds and affirmed its AAA rating to the City’s existing GO Bonds. It was a sad night at the Elmhurst Elks Club, where DuPage County Republicans gathered to watch the results of the General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

At the federal level, Democrat Mike Quigley who represents the 5th Congressional District, which includes Elmhurst, handily won re-election with 14,518* votes over Republican Tom Hanson who received 12,687.* In the 8th Congressional District, which includes Villa Park, Addison and other communities in the Independent readership area, the popular Raja Krishnamoorthi (D) garnered 47,097 votes over Jitendra Diganvker (R) who received 28,207.

County Sheriff James Mendrick (R) held on to his seat over challenger Gregory Whalen by a vote of 176,350 to 167,836.

In a stunner, DuPage County Clerk and leader in the DuPage Republican Party Paul Hinds fell to Democrat Jean Kaczmarek 179,518 to 164,658.

In County Board District #1, Sam Tornatore (R) and Ashley Selmon (D) were the top vote-getters over Dino Gavanes (R) and Zahra Suratwala (D).

In County Board District #2, Elizabeth Chaplin (D) was re-elected, garnering more than 40% of the vote.

The second spot in District #2 went to Pete DiCianni over Steve Nero, who are both Republicans. DiCianni received about 32% of the vote and Nero took just over 26%.

The other County Board Districts were dominated by Democrats in Districts #3, #4, and #5. While Republican Jim Zay was the top vote-getter in District #6, the second spot went to Democrat Sheila Rutledge.

Joe Cantore (R) was re-elected President of the DuPage County Forest Preserve, but it was another close

race to watch as he beat Daniel Hebreard (D) 173,400 to 170,269.

County, Township propositions The three propositions placed on the ballot by DuPage County received resounding ‘Yes’ votes, although they were advisory only (which means voters provided their opinion on the issues, but did not vote them into law). Area residents voted that the County Board should: 1) oppose a property tax increase to help retire the state debt; 2) oppose a mileage tax; and, 3) continue to reduce and consolidate redundant units of government.

In Addison Township, the Proposition Representation Aviation and the Homestead Exemption Proposition both were both approved by 92% and 86% of the vote, respectively.

York Township had a question on the ballot about supporting initiatives to address climate change, which resulted in 75% of voters saying ‘Yes.’

Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot set to step off Nov. 22

It’s been a busy November already with the Election and Veterans Day, so it’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is upon us. With it comes the 35th Annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot through Elmhurst. This year’s event steps off at 9 a.m. from Park Ave. and Cottage Hill and it’s not too late to take part.

Registration is currently taking place online at dangibbonsturkeytrot.org for $35 per person. The fee goes up to $40 on Saturday, Nov. 17 and thereafter. That Saturday is also the day participants can pre-register in person or pick up their packet, if registration is already done, at the Knights of Columbus, 537 So. York, from 1-5 p.m.

While runners and walkers are asked to pre-register, day-of registration and packet pickup will be available on Thursday, Nov. 22 from 6:30-8:45 a.m. at the Elmhurst College Gym inside R. A. Faganel Hall, 221 Walter St., on the campus of Elmhurst College.

The mission of the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot Foundation is “to be a major contributor in the eradication of hunger and to promote long-term sustainability in DuPage County.”

This past year, the Foundation was part of a new endeavor called Café Liberty, an 11-week culinary training program for veterans only.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Nov. 3 Bradley Gillette, 25, of Northlake, was charged aggravated battery and DUI near Grand and Lake at around 11:50 p.m. Police said officers responded for a battery in progress at the above location. The victim came to the police department where he stated Gillette allegedly punched him in the face after a road rage incident. The suspect was located on scene and was taken into custody after being found to be DUI, according to police.

A victim in the 100 block of E. First drove to the police station at around 5:19 p.m., reporting that a juvenile passenger attempted to strike him with a bottle. The two juvenile passengers were released to a parent. An investigation is pending.

Police said that subsequent to a motorist assist at around 4 p.m., the victim related he was battered in Melrose Park by a group of gang members. The victim was transported to Elmhurst Hospital where he was met by Cook County Sheriff’s Police who took over the investigation.

Nov. 2-Nov. 5 Police said while officers responded to the report of a theft at a company in the 800 block of N. Larch, the complainant approached officers and related that an unknown suspect(s) damaged the latch on the company’s storage container sometime between the above dates.

The complainant told police nothing was taken from the container.

Criminal trespass

Nov. 7 Police said that subsequent to a call of a subject refusing to leave a store in the 100 block of E. Schiller at around 1:58 p.m., a complainant related that Lester Jehnke, 61, of Wheaton, was asked numerous times to leave the premises. According to police, Jehnke was served with a no trespass notice and charged with criminal trespass to real property.

Disorderly conduct

Nov. 4 Arnold Janickas, 49, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct and served with a no trespass notice in the 100 block of S. West at around 4:22 p.m. Police said a victim related that Janickas was attempting to look into the window of her house. The victim has an expired order of protection against Janickas, according to police. Police said Janickas was later located at his address and taken into custody.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Nov. 7 A 36-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with domestic battery in the 400 block of N. Oak at around 10:05 p.m. Police said officers responded for an unknown request, where yelling could be heard over the phone. Upon arrival, it was determined that the suspect had battered the victim.

A complainant told police at around 9:37 p.m. that the suspects were involved in a verbal

The victim complained of elbow, knee, and back pain, but refused medics. There were no visible signs of injury, and due to conflicting stories, no arrests were made.

Nov. 6 A 22-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 300 block of S. Sunnyside at around 7:27 a.m. The victim told police that the suspect allegedly hit her in the head and she was bleeding.

Nov. 3 A 39-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 300 block of N. Oaklawn at around 12:44 a.m. A victim told police that the suspect struck her in the nose.

A victim in the 500 block of W. Comstock told police at around 5:30 p.m. that the suspect became irate after being served with an order of protection. The suspect reportedly knocked over a bookcase, attempted to take the victim’s cellphone and pushed the victim in the chest.

Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect with no results. The reporting officer will obtain an arrest warrant for domestic battery.

Nov. 2 A victim in the 400 block of E. Vallette told police at around 6 p.m. that she had an argument with the suspect and slammed the door on him. The suspect stated he raised his arm up so that the door would not hit him, subsequently causing damage to the door. No complaints are to be signed.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication

Nov. 8 Marquita Adams, 25, of Batavia, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and I-290 at around 1:11 a.m.

Nov. 4 Faustino Fraga-Rivera, 39, of Palatine, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Maple at around 2:16 a.m.

Rene Garcia, 31, of Stickney, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage and expired registration subsequent to a complaint of erratic driving near St. Charles and Fair at around 7:58 a.m.

Nov. 3 Calleen Perry, 20, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct-public intoxication,

Nov. 5 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop in the 100 block of W. Industrial at around 9:50 a.m., Mohammed Al Quisieh, 24, of Villa Park, fled the scene. Al Qaisieh and Ahmad A. Al Qaisieh, 24, of Villa Park, then were involved in a two-vehicle light pole crash, according to police. Mohammed was charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving while license suspended, obstructed windows, no valid registration and no seat belt. Ahmad was found to be wanted out of DuPage County, police said. He was issued a citation for no seat belt and posted bond on the warrant.

Harassment, threats

Nov. 6 A victim in the 300 block of N. Oaklawn told police at around 6:27 p.m. that her husband has been texting and calling her and their daughter. The victim related she wants him to stop contacting her. The suspect was contacted and advised not to have any further contact with the victim.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Nov. 7 Brian K. Nicholson, 24, of Harvey, was issued citations for possession of cannabis and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 8:47 p.m.

Nov. 6 Christopher Diego, 18, of Bensenville, was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a suspicious vehicle in the 800 block of Church at 7:17 p.m.

Nov. 3 William J. Hall, 33, of Oak Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near York and North at around 12:19 a.m.

Nov. 2 A complainant told police at around 5:35 p.m. that she suspected her son was under the influence of drugs, and when confronted, he immediately left the area on his bicycle. The victim was located at 7:13 p.m. Recovered from the subject were Klonopin®, a “one hitter” and a vaping device. An investigation is pending.

Oct. 21-Nov. 12 A complainant at Elmhurst Hospital told police that shortly after the suspect began her employment, the suspect requested an unusual amount of a prescription drug through the hospital dispenser sometime between the above dates. An investigation is pending.

Suspicious circumstances

Nov. 5 Elmhurst Hospital emergency personnel re-

ported the victim was dropped off at the ER at around 7:15 p.m. seeking medical treatment for a non-life threatening gunshot wound, according to police. A reporting officer interviewed the uncooperative victim, who told officers the shooting did not occur in Elmhurst but refused to provide any further information.

Officers were unable to ascertain the location or circumstances of the shooting.

Nov. 2 Police said a suspect was in the 600 block of W. Grand to make a delivery when he started making racial slurs at employees. There have been multiple issues in the past between the suspect and the complainant. The suspect was served with a trespass notice.

Nov. 1 Police said an unknown suspect in the 700 block of N. Oaklawn told the complainant at around 2:18 p.m. that he was at the location to pick up a fork lift battery. After being given access to the building, the suspect walked around to various parts of the building. The suspect was wearing a black coat, light colored shirt, dark jeans, and a St. Louis Cardinals hat.

Oct. 21 A complainant in the 400 block of N. West told police at around 1:42 a.m. that the suspect is one of her former patients. While the complainant was dropping her children at school, the suspect approached and briefly spoke with the complainant. The complainant requested that an officer contact the suspect and advise her to no longer have contact with her or her children.

Nov. 7 Kimberly Havlick, 43, of Justice, was charged with felony residential burglary, financial exploitation of the elderly/disabled in the 300 block of S. Sunnyside at around 2:23 p.m. Police said a victim related she believes her caregiver had taken money from a kitchen drawer. Havlick admitted to taking money on two separate occasions, according to police.

Nov. 3-Nov. 6 Breaking into a vehicle was reported in the 800 block of S. Riverside. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) gained access to his locked semi-tractor that was parked at the above location sometime between the above dates. The lock on the passenger side door was tampered with and broken. The contents of the semi-tractor had been thrown around the inside of the cabin. Nothing appeared to be missing.

Nov. 5 Angelo Bunkley, 19, of Villa Park, was charged with retail theft at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:49 p.m. Police said Kohl’s security reports the the suspect took a Nike Therma Sphere Hood and left the store without paying for the merchandise.

Bunkley was detained by the security officer who recovered the merchandise, according to police. Bunkley then allegedly fled from the security officer, but officers located the suspect, who was taken into custody.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of W. St. Charles at around 4:18 p.m.

Bond set at $50,000 for Chicago man charged with hate crime DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced on Friday, Nov. 9, that a Chicago man has been charged Ranferi Basillo with yelling racial slurs and threatening three African-American and one Hispanic man with a knife. Ranferi Basilio, 32, appeared at a bond hearing this morning where Judge George Bakalis set bond at $50,000 with 10% to apply.

Basilio has been charged with two counts of Felony Hate Crime. Additionally, Basilio faces Misdemeanor charges of Aggravated Assault and Criminal Damage to Property.

It is alleged that on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018, at approximately 10:24 p.m., the four victims, all DuPage County residents, entered the 7-eleven Store on Westmore

Street in Lombard where Basilio was working as a clerk. It is alleged that while the four victims were in the store, Basilio began yelling racial slurs at the men. It is alleged that the victims decided to leave the store and that, when they did, Basilio followed them out. It is further alleged that once outside the store, Basilio continued yelling racial slurs at the men and pulled out a long-bladed knife.

It is alleged that the four victims then ran away from the store, leaving their car in the parking lot, and that as they ran away, Basilio yelled “I am going to slash all four tires.”

It is further alleged that Basilio then slashed all four tires of the car in which the victims arrived. Lombard Police were called to the scene and after investigating the matter took Basilio into custody.

“Let me be perfectly clear, any crime driven by hate, with the intent to harm, intimidate or instill fear in another, will be met with the full force and effect of the law,” Berlin

said. “Hate crimes, and the accompanying prejudice that fuels these despicable actions, have no place in our society and will not be tolerated in DuPage County. I would like to thank the Lombard Police Department for their work helping us secure charges against Mr. Basilio.”

“I echo State’s Attorney Berlin’s sentiments,” Newton said. “It is indeed a shame that we continue to see this type of disgusting behavior directed at our fellow human beings.”

Basilio’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 4, 2018 in front of Judge Bakalis.

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

Warrant arrest

Nov. 2 Police said Daniel Stelter, 28, of Villa Park, came into the police station to turn himself in on a warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. The warrant was confirmed and Stelter was taken into custody.

Stelter was processed, given a new court date, and was released on bond.

New research suggests that a women’s risk for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults, may partially depend on diet. Specifically, researchers found that it was not the quantity of carbohydrates a woman consumed, but which carbohydrates she ate that had a bearing on her AMD risk. For the study, carbohydrates were separated according to where they stood on the “dietary glycemic index,” which is a measure of the quality of dietary carbohydrates.

Over a ten-year period, it was found that women who consumed high-glycemic-index foods (such as white bread and French fries) had a higher risk of developing signs of early AMD than women who consumed low-glycemic-index foods (such as yams or lentils). Macular degeneration is caused by the breakdown of the macula, the central portion of the retina. Although the disease causes distorted central and color vision, it does not affect side vision. Recent studies indicate that certain changes to diet may help some women reduce their chances of developing macular degeneration. Plumbing insights: Prevention became my mantra

At our house we recently experienced a season of plumbing.

TGIO. Thank goodness it’s over (I hope).

It started with a water heater that refused to heat water. Which was a problem. Obviously.

I’m not much for cold showers.

Unfortunately it didn’t end there.

A cold shower is one thing. No shower is another.

This next adventure started with a clog in the bathtub/shower, which quickly spread to another tub/ shower that was attached to the same drainage system. One clog, two tubs.

Three plumbers.

The first guy used a snake. Not a reptile, but a tool with the same name. It’s used to slither downward through the pipes to clear clogs.

Except not ours. The snake was stymied. As was the plumber.

Enter plumber number two.

He diagnosed the problem – after knocking a hole in our kitchen ceiling. It was in our drum traps, which I’d never heard of before.

Suddenly knowledge about drum traps leapt to the top of my to-do list. Plumber number two kindly explained we had an antiquated kind that were in need of an update, except he didn’t have the right parts on hand to fix the clog that day.

This was on a Friday afternoon.

He wouldn’t be able to return until Monday. It was going to be a long weekend.

Our clog was comprehensive; the pipes were completely blocked. If we ran the shower, the tub quickly filled with water that didn’t drain.

Even if left overnight. The shortest, most abbreviated shower forced us to bail with a bucket into the nearby toilet. Cleanliness at a cost.

To our credit, we didn’t completely stink up the place, thanks to a new invention called a sink shower, which wasn’t really a shower, but involved water and a sink and a fair amount of scrubbing – of our skin, not the sink.

Our dilemma also made me appreciate the importance of a clog-free life. A sink in another bathroom was slow to drain so I decided to proactively take things into my own hands, or in this case snake. Plumbing professionals use professional grade snakes to clear clogs. I got a cheap facsimile, which was basically a long, barbed ribbon of plastic.

I snaked that doohickey town the drain and pulled up a slimy hairball the size of a small kitten. It would have been gross had I not been so very proud.

Plumber three arrived first thing Monday morning. God bless him.

He worked like a warrior, cutting through old pipes and piecing in new to create an unclogged work of PVC art. It was a beautiful sight and I didn’t know if I’d ever have the heart to cover it up with a new kitchen ceiling patch.

He also produced another kittensized hairball: the cause of our past weekend’s shower-free status.

After paying the plumbing bills and being witness to the two kittens – aka clogs – I’ll never ignore an errant strand of hair in the sink again. To think I used to rinse them down the drain!

Prevention became my mantra. I was (am) sincere – zealous even – in my commitment to avoid clogs in the future. But how? We could all shave our heads, but I’m not sure that would work as a long-term solution. It was time to visit the place with all the answers: Google.

Viola! I discovered an amazing invention called a drain strainer.

It sits on top of the bathtub drain and works like a kitchen strainer, except instead of veggies it catches hair, soap slime and other grossities that schlep off of our bodies in the shower. Every so often (depending on your personal shedding capability) you simply empty the hair-goo blob from the strainer.

It goes without saying that I am the only person in my house with the talent and overall prowess required to empty the hair from a full strainer.

It’s a responsibility I take seriously.

Plus, it’s a small price to pay for the assurance that I’ll never have to give birth to drain kittens ever again.

Suspects charged with robbery at Yorktown Mall

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton announced last week that bond had been set for four suspects accused of stealing personal items from two victims outside the Yorktown Mall.

All four men appeared at bond hearing this morning where Judge John Kinsella set bond as below.

Each defendant is charged with one count of Class 1 Felony Robbery and one count of Class 2 Felony Robbery. The cases against each of the four men will be heard in front of Judge Kinsella.

• Shaheer Muhammad, 19, of Chicago. Bond was set at $30,000 with 10% to apply. His next court appearance is scheduled for De-

cember 5, 2018, for arraignment.

• Lezzerick Webster, 24, of Chicago. Bond was set at $75,000 with 10% to apply. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 6, 2018, for arraignment.

• Trentiss McClinton¸ 23, of Chicago. Bond was set at $100,000 with 10% to apply. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 5, 2018 for arraignment.

It is further alleged that the second victim, a 78-year-old woman, was walking outside the mall when the same defendant forcibly took her purse from her arms. It is alleged that all four men then entered a vehicle and fled the scene.

Man pleads guilty to drug-induced homicide of 15-year-old exchange student

Former civilian employee of Villa Park Police Department charged with misconduct, theft Lombard resident Simons released on bond following arrest DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Lay announced on Wednesday, Nov. 7, that a former civilian employee at the Villa Park Police Department had been charged with two counts of Official Misconduct (Class 3 Felony), one count of Theft of Government Property (Class 4 Felony), one count of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Class 4 Felony) and one count of Misdemeanor Theft.

On Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, a $10,000 with 10% to apply arrest warrant was issued for John Simons, 48, of Lombard. Yesterday afternoon, Simon turned himself in to authorities at the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, posted the necessary $1,000 and was released from custody.

It is alleged that on Oct. 10, 2018, Simons stole hydrocodone pills from the evidence vault of the Villa Park Police Department.

Upon learning of the alleged theft, the Villa Park Police Department immediately contacted the DuPage

County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Simons has since resigned from his position with the police department.

“I would like to commend Chief Lay and his administration, particularly Deputy Chief William Lyons, for uncovering this alleged theft and for immediately bringing this matter to our attention,” Berlin said. “There is no room for the type of behavior alleged in this case at any work place let alone a police department whose primary mission is to protect and serve the public.”

“I am very disappointed that an employee of our department was allegedly involved in activity that lead to these charges,” Lay said. “I am thankful that members of our department discovered potential wrongdoing on the part of the employee, swiftly initiated an investigation and brought the information to the attention of the DuPage County State’s Attorneys’ office for further investigation.”

In the girl’s bedroom, investigators found an oral syringe with a small amount of a clear liquid and a prescription bottle with a small amount of clear liquid contained within. Lab tests identified the clear liquid as methadone.

The investigation ultimately led authorities to Emanuele as the person who not only supplied the fatal drug but also instructed the girl on how to ingest it. The victim was introduced to Emanuele through another foreign exchange student who was living with Emanuele and his family.

“I would first like to extend my sincerest condolences to this young victim’s family and friends as they continue their struggle to come to terms with this tragic, senseless loss of such a young, promising life,” Berlin said. “Perhaps Mr. Emanuele’s guilty plea will help them in the healing process and provide some measure of closure.”

Emanuele’s next court date is scheduled for December 17, 2018 for return of the pre-sentence report. He faces a penalty of between eight to thirty-five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Each year student’s in the Diocese of Joliet participate in a walk around their school campus in support of helping students attend Catholic schools.

Each student brings in a donation to help this cause and this year, Vis-

itation was able to raise a total of $702. This amount surpassed what was raised last year -- Way to go, Vikings! The Visitation Student Council helped to collect the money and cheer the students on as they walked with their Faith Partners.

ICGS students visited by WWII WASP On Friday, Oct. 26, 2nd and 8th grade students at Immaculate Conception Grade School in Elmhurst had the privilege of listening to the military pilot and great-grandmother of three of their fellow ICGS students.

Jane Doyle, who was visiting for ICGS’ celebration of Grandparents’ Day, is a 96-year-old woman who served as a WASP (Women Air Force Service Pilot) in World War II. WASPs were the first women in

America’s history to fly American military aircraft and voluntarily put their lives on the line in an experimental program that proved women could successfully fly military aircraft. These women flew every type of mission any Army Air Force Male pilot flew in WW II except for combat missions. Their service as pilots freed male pilots to fly those combat missions. Doyle and her fellow WASPs forever changed the role of women in aviation.

How the opioid overdose and death epidemic can be reversed

It’s time for your annual flu shot

Influenza (flu) season in Illinois typically starts in the fall, and the DuPage County Health Department is recommending that everyone six months and older be vaccinated against influenza. The Health Department suggests that residents check with their physician’s office or local pharmacy for the availability of flu vaccine.

The single most effective way to prevent getting the flu is an annual flu shot. Influenza is a serious illness and can be fatal. Even healthy people get the flu each year, so it’s important for everyone to be vaccinated. Protecting yourself from flu also protects the people around you who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community.

Flu season can last as late as May. Flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands or sometimes tens of thousands of deaths.

Flu hit children hard last season with 183 lab-confirmed influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported nationally.

Approximately 80 percent of these deaths occurred in children who had not received a flu vaccination this season.

Why? Experts say no single policy approach can stop the epidemic.

Physicians are reducing the prescription opioid supply. But policies must also focus on prevention and treatment. About 90 percent of those needing addiction treatment are unable to get it.

The science shows what works: certain medications prescribed by a physician or dispensed at federally certified opioid treatment programs. Combining that treatment with medical care, counseling and other services can help patients with substance use disorder lead satisfying and productive lives.

“The numbers speak to a national tragedy. We need to act with resolve as we have with other public health epidemics. Our patients diagnosed with a substance use disorder deserve no less,” says AMA president-elect Patrice A. Harris, MD. “Most people agree that we need access to treatments that include medication but that is not readily available for many patients.

This epidemic will not be reversed until we deal with access issues and stigma associated with opioid misuse.”

Specific actions that should be taken, according to Dr. Harris include: • Insurance providers should

immediately remove barriers so patients can obtain affordable medication treatment combined with counseling.

• Policymakers and regulators should enforce laws that require mental health benefits to be on par with other health benefits. This gives patients access to treatment related to mental health and opioid use disorders.

• Health insurance providers and pharmacy benefit managers should ensure that patients have access to affordable, non-opioid pain care.

• Physicians should register for and use electronic databases that track controlled substance prescriptions in their state. Using these databases allows physicians to make more informed prescribing decisions. History Museum presents ‘Hometown Holiday: It’s a Wonderful Life in Elmhurst’ New exhibit on the making of the classic holiday film opens Nov. 16 “Each man’s life touches so many other lives.

In the summer of 1946, Oscar-winning director Frank Capra and his Oscar-nominated leading man Jimmy Stewart had both returned to Hollywood filmmaking after serving during World War II. Remembering the pair’s pre-war hit, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” the public eagerly awaited the film, titled “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The film received solid—if not exactly glowing—reviews when it opened in December of 1946. It received no Academy Awards even though it was nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. Although both Capra and Stewart considered it among their finest work, the movie barely made enough at the box office to pay for itself and the financial stress eventually sank director Capra’s Liberty Studios.

How then did this solid-yet-unremarkable film become an enduring classic more than 70 years later? Today, it is considered by many to be among the best American films ever made,

and it has become a cherished holiday tradition to watch it year after year. Perhaps it’s the movie’s realistic and bittersweet themes of friendship, family, hope, and dreams that ring true—or maybe it’s the sentiment that each person’s life can touch so many others that still resonates today as it did in 1946.

New exhibit explores the making of Capra’s classic The Elmhurst History Museum presents “Hometown Holiday: It’s a Wonderful Life in Elmhurst,” a new exhibit that explores the making of the film, the lives of the people who made it, and its journey from obscurity to classic. The key focal point of the exhibit is a private collection on loan from Chicago-area collector Richard Goodson that includes a diverse array of rare photos, advertisements, lobby cards, memorabilia and more to tell the story of “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Sponsored by Lakeside Bank, the exhibit will share interesting facts about the film through reminiscences of cast and crew, personal letters, autographed photos, and other ephemera. ‘Road’ scholar, author leads informative program at Mayslake Explore Illinois’ world-famous memoirs and literary heritage with historian John Hallwas, an Illinois Humanities “Road Scholar,” at “Illinois Memoirs: Our Story and Your Opportunity” on Friday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at Mayslake Peabody Estate at 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook.

Hallwas will discuss Illinois’ rich literary heritage, including Chief Black Hawk’s autobiography — the first by a Native American to be published in the United States; Ulysses S. College president named top fundraiser for DuPage ‘Real Men Wear Pink’

VanAken responsible for more than $10G of $47,000 total

The American Cancer Society has named Elmhurst College President Troy D. VanAken the top fundraiser of the Real Men Wear Pink campaign of DuPage County. President VanAken raised $10,135 for the campaign, crediting his success in large part to a parallel, campuswide effort called Real Bluejays Wear Pink.

In its second year, the county’s Real Men Wear Pink campaign raised a total of $47,000 to support the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Throughout the month of October, 27 prominent men in the area participated in the campaign, raising funds and awareness in the fight to end breast

cancer.

Real Bluejays Wear Pink, led by President VanAken and Vice President for Student Affairs Phil Riordan, a cancer survivor, engaged Elmhurst College students, faculty and staff throughout October in a number of events and activities to support the campaign.

A highlight was the Campuswide Pink-Out on Oct. 25, when more than 500 students, faculty and staff gathered on the College Mall to form a giant pink ribbon.

Conrad Fischer teachers make the grade

McTeacher’s Night raises funds for math instruction materials

Conrad Fischer Elementary School teachers, parents, students, and friends gathered at the McDonald’s located at 920 N. York Road, on Monday, Nov. 5. This event offers community members a win-win situation whereby dining in the restaurant, a portion of proceeds would be donated to the school.

Teachers from Fischer School volunteered behind the counter where they served students and their families in a fundraiser.

Fischer had a team of outstanding teachers selling pies to customers throughout the night and they all did a terrific job. The proceeds from the pies, which were donated by The Nelson Family, went directly to benefit the students. Twenty percent of the proceeds from the McTeacher’s Night sales were also donated to the school, which plans to use the money to help pay for Math instructional manipulatives, games, and materials.

A letter home from a fellow soldier said Bennett, 18, had been attacking a machine gun nest as the Marines fought, successfully, to stem a German advance threatening the French capital of Paris in June 1918, the last summer of World War I. The fallen Marine had lingered for an hour before dying, one of the first casualties from Illinois. The letter honoring him, typed by fellow Marine Pvt. John W. Olsen, read: “He passed away quietly, without a complaint, and was laid to rest near where he fell.”

cemeteries in France, and faded memorials at home, are among the few tangible reminders of the “Great War” that began on July 28, 1914, and ended, after 18 million soldiers and civilians had died on all sides, with an armistice that went into effect at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918.

Now, nearing the 100th anniversary of the war’s end, the push is on to recall and honor the men and women of Illinois, and all across America, who suffered and sacrificed for their nation.

Congress has created a United States World War I Centennial Commission, which is overseeing com-

memorations and fundraising for a World War I memorial in Washington, D.C. Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a proclamation announcing the Illinois National Guard and Chicago’s Pritzker Military Museum & Library will lead the effort to ensure the Land of Lincoln remembers its role in the Great War. A World War I Centennial Committee has been drafted to aid in that state mission and it’s chaired by Jeanne Hamacher, who has taught high school history classes. She said the key lesson to learn is that Illinois went to extraordinary efforts to sup-

“When I was teaching, I did a lesson where I could link basically every conflict the United States has had (since World War I) back to World War I in some shape or form,” Hamacher said. She said Illinois had helped win the war, and the war changed the world forever.

“Schools need to teach this, we need to remember,” she added.

The United States declared war on Germany and its Central Powers allies on April 6, 1917, and Illinois became part of the vast conflict that would mark America’s emergence as a global superpower.

The United States sent 4,734,991 soldiers and sailors to Europe and suffered 116,516 deaths, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Records from the Illinois Office of the Adjutant General list more than 351,000 Illinois men who served in the Army, Navy and Marines during World War I, and some 5,000 of them died.

One of every 12 enlistees in the Army hailed from Illinois, and each left a mark.

The American Legion Post in Clinton is Crang-Bennett Post 103, named for the fallen Marine and also Army Sgt. 1st Class Welby Crang, who lived about a block from Bennett and died in France in 1917 from pneumonia.

Ron Devore, 86, is a member of the Post 103 executive board and a former post commander who has fought to keep the memory of the World War I soldiers alive. He said the post was founded in 1919 not just to honor fallen veterans, but to help and lobby for those who returned home alive, if not always in one piece.

“Some of these guys had been gassed, their lungs were burned, they had missing limbs and disabilities; they were messed up for life, and they weren’t getting anything from the government,” Devore said. “Veterans knew that, if there was a bunch of them banded together, they could have a voice in Washington, D.C.” Devore’s wife, Marjorie, whose father was a World War I veteran, vividly recalls the returned soldiers’ sense of pride despite all their trials and tribulations. She said that pride had been matched by the patriotic fervor of their communities at home.

“My dad always said everybody had supported the war effort,” she said.

The civilian push to buoy the troops with maximum support on the home front was extraordinary.

Illinois mobilized vast forces of industry, and especially industrialized agriculture, and turned them into an arsenal of democracy that flooded the American war effort with food, war material and cash.

Illinois created the State Council of Defense, the job of which was to persuade, corral and control civilian production, from engineering to seed corn, to fuel the war machine. When the council produced its wrap-up report in 1919, it was suffused with pride at the sheer wartime output from the people of Illinois.

It pointed out that the state’s agricultural production for 1918 had

been geared to meet the needs of the wartime “national food authorities” and had been the third-largest crop harvest in state history, worth close to $880 million (about $15 billion in today’s dollars).

“Notwithstanding the drain upon manpower, the state in 1918 turned out manufactured products valued at $6 billion. ... Of these, $2 billion-worth were on direct war contracts, but virtually all were war contributions, for Illinois factories are not largely given to the production of luxuries or non-essentials,” the council reported.

It also lauded the generosity of Illinois citizens, who raised $45 million during the war to support everything from the Red Cross to the YMCA and the Salvation Army.

Timothy Kovalcik, associate professor of history at Millikin University, said it’s important to understand the wartime atmosphere gripping Illinois and the entire nation.

“Support for the war was at fever pitch and the propaganda was incredibly successful,” Kovalcik said.

A state with a significant population of Germanic ancestry (Teutopolis in Effingham County, for example, means “City of the Teutons,” or Germans, and is typical of many towns founded by German settlers) had no trouble raising troops.

“The population of German ancestry volunteered at massive rates to show their patriotism,” Kovalcik said. “They wanted to prove they were true Americans.”

With troops rushing forward and humming factories full of nose-togrindstone workers who had shunted aside labor grumbles for the greater patriotic good, the State Council of Defense believed it had glimpsed capitalism’s promised land.

“All war undertakings succeeded by virtue of the spirit of cooperation,” it concluded in its final 1919 report.

“Since this unity of thought and purpose can be achieved under stress of war, why can it not be approximated, at least, in time of peace?”

But it was not to be. Kovalcik said a big influence that had pushed President Woodrow Wilson to steer America into the war is that much of it on the British side had been financed by American banks.

They stood to lose their shirts big time if Britain and its Allies, fatigued with crippling losses by 1917, were defeated. And yet when the American intervention was over and the war won, the demand that had quadrupled the U.S. economy between 1914 and 1917 suddenly collapsed, taking jobs with it.

By the dawn of the Great Depression in the 1930s, jobless and hungry World War I veterans and their families, some 17,000 of them, had marched on Washington, D.C. They were demanding early payment of war service bonuses promised by Congress but not due to be distributed until 1945. On July 28, President Herbert Hoover ordered in the Army to help the police clear the protesters and, in street battles that followed, two veterans were killed.

Finally, in 1936, Congress overrode the veto of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the veterans were paid their bonuses nine years early.

Last week: IC Catholic Prep 49, Marengo 27; Richmond 17, Coal City 14 Outlook: The Knights ran for more than 400 yards in their semifinal victory over Marengo, which scored the most points against IC Catholic Prep this season (27). The Knights had given up a combined 28 points over their last eight games heading into the Marengo contest. The Knights now are averaging more than 300 rushing yards per game. RichmondBurton, located in the town of Richmond near the state line of Illinois and Wisconsin on Illinois 31/U.S. 12, plays in the same Kishwaukee River Valley Conference as Marengo. Richmond’s only loss this season was to the same Marengo team IC Catholic Prep just beat (14-13 in Richmond).

Richmond is under the direction now of well-known area coach Mike Noll, who led McHenry High School (not too far from Richmond) to prominence during his tenure on the sidelines there.

Out of Richmond’s 12 games, the Rockets have played four teams with winning records (3-1 record). The Rockets also have five wins against teams with either 3-6 or 2-7 records. IC Catholic Prep will play three playoff teams in succession that once resided in the Big Northern Conference (Stillman Valley, Marengo and Richmond).

Up next: The winner heads to Memorial Stadium in Champaign on Friday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m., to play for the Class 4A state title against the winner of the bottom-half of the bracket that features either No. 4 Rochester (11-1) or a school extremely familiar to IC Catholic Prep, Bishop McNamara, the No. 3 seed with an 11-1 record. McNamara’s only loss this season is a 1-point setback to IC Catholic Prep in Elmhurst in Week 4.

During its recent run of success, the IC Catholic Prep football team has thrived because of the contributions of many.

Count three-year senior wide receiver/linebacker/safety Jake Lytton as one of many key contributors to a Knights squad that has itself on yet another path to greatness.

As a wide receiver heading into the team’s quarterfinal game this past

weekend, Lytton had caught a teamhigh 21 passes for a team-best 371 yards (17.7 yards per grab) and three touchdowns.

“I’m reading the ball better as a wide receiver,” he said. “I played running back as a sophomore and then moved to the slot last year. It’s been a good adjustment for me. I’ve worked at it and my teammates have helped me a lot. I’ve been fortunate to have some amazing quarterbacks.

On defense, he had 23 total tackles, four tackles for loss, two quarterback sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries through the team’s first 11 undefeated contests.

Lytton noted he’s also progressed at his linebacking position. “I’m making better breaks on the ball,” he said. “I’ve made better adjustments.

My tackling has gotten better and I’m reading the offense better.”

Lytton, who also plays baseball at the school (center field and pitcher) and would like to play football in college (he noted he has a couple Division III offers on the table), said

We put in the work every day and you do what it takes to help each other out. These are my brothers. I would do anything for them. They push me to my limit. We all are extremely close. Timothy Christian cross-country teams turn in strong season Trojans’ boys team wins conference title; Clark qualifies for state girls meet

Both Timothy Christian cross-country teams achieved successes on the course this season.

The Timothy Christian boys team won the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division title and placed seniors Clint Fincher, Alex Oldenburger, Noah Bezanson and junior Caleb Mitchell on the all-conference team.

Fincher won the MSC Red individual title for a second year in a row, while Oldenburger finished sixth, Bezanson ninth and Mitchell third.

Timothy took third at the Lisle regional and finished ninth at the Lisle sectional as a team.

Fincher qualified for state out of the sectional and took 72nd in Class 1A with a time of 16:04.

The Timothy girls took second in the MSC Red Division. Junior Hope Clark won the Lisle Mane Event with a time of 19:57 on the 5K course.

Clark and junior Elise Terpstra were named to the all-MSC Red team.

Clark took third at the conference meet, while Terpstra was eighth.

The Trojans took second at the Lisle regional and were seventh at the Lisle sectional.

Clark qualified for the state meet and placed 68th in Class 1A with a time of 19:00. “Hope and Elise were solid all season,” said Timothy coach Dick Zylstra.

Seniors Olivia Reamer, Morgan Hoving and Jill Forgac graduate off this year’s team. “We graduated three great seniors,” said Zylstra.

Freshmen Paige Hoving, Grace Lindemulder, Tegan Gunn, Rachel Smith and sophomore Kate Forgac all return. “I’m excited about four freshmen and one sophomore who show potential,” said Zylstra.

Overall, Zylstra liked what this year’s group accomplished. “We had 19 kids on the team, 10 girls and nine boys,” he said. “It’s a great group of kids to work with and to be around.

They got along great with each other and supported each other all season.”

amazing and the freshmen and sophomores push us to get better. We have an amazing group of guys here.”

Lytton said his experience in coach Bill Krefft’s program has been “life changing.”

“I don’t think I would be the person I am today without this program and what it has done for me,” he said.

“It’s helped me grow up as a person.

The coaches and staff have taught us so many life lessons like working with your teammates, working individually and how to push yourself to get better.”

The Lytton name is no stranger to IC Catholic Prep. Older sister Josie now plays softball at Aurora University, while younger sister, Emma, is currently enrolled at IC Catholic

James was part of the 2016 state-title team, while Sam is now part of the Knights’ coaching staff.

With the amount of success the program has enjoyed the last three seasons, Lytton said the word pressure isn’t really talked about.

“We don’t look at it like pressure,” he said. “We’ve all been here before. We look at this as another week with the guys. That’s the only thing we want. We don’t want to end up short. We are going to keep pushing ourselves day by day. We don’t look ahead. We work hard and keep doing what we are doing. There’s not much else to it.”

Stremler leads team in scoring

The Timothy Christian boys soccer team had three players named to the all-conference team this season.

Isaiah Whitaker, Matt Van Zeelt and Andrew Vogt, all seniors, earned all-conference accolades.

Timothy Christian finished the season 12-10-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play (tied for third place).

Jonathan Stremler led the team in scoring with 11 goals and five assists, while Josh Wise had eight goals and four assists. Carson Hooker finished with eight goals and six assists.

Whitaker had six goals and one assist.

“This was a great group of guys to work with,” Timothy coach Joel

Zielke said. “The team chemistry was excellent. It was fun to go to practice. They wanted to learn and get better. We had a lot of growth. We just couldn’t get over the hump in the big games.”

Timothy registered 10 shutouts on the season. “If you look at our scores there were only two games where we lost by three or more goals,” said Zielke. “Everything else was 2-1 or 1-0. We played a tough schedule and that’s part of it.”

Zielke saw plenty that he was impressed by this season. “We possessed the ball well and were able to control the tempo most games,” he said. “We created a lot of scoring opportunities, but our struggle sometimes was finishing. Our defense was very strong. We had a great group of three seniors in the back who had a lot of experience and that paid off for

us.”

Zielke noted the Trojans will graduate six starters from this year’s squad. “We have a lot of guys who contributed this year and a lot of them are coming back. We have a lot of minutes coming back.”

Sophomore goalie Kyle Teune was lauded for his play between the pipes.

“Kyle will be a junior next year and he did a great job as a sophomore,” said Zielke.

Timothy’s JV team finished with an 8-3-1 record. “That was a nice group so we’ll have those guys coming up to fill some holes for us as well,” said Zielke.

The Trojans also return their top three scorers in Stremler, Hooker and Wise.

“I think we learned a lot this year,” said Zielke. “We will get after it here and be ready come fall next year.”

IC Catholic Prep boys cross-country team qualifies for sixth consecutive sectional

Earlier this week, 11 York High School student-athletes were scheduled to sign their national letters of intent to continue their academic and

athletic careers at the collegiate level next year.

That group included York softball players Julia Derkowski (St. Lawrence University), Katherine Karnatz (Missouri-Kansas City) and Izzy Smith (Northern Illinois).

Lacrosse players included Carolyn Fritsch (Drexel) and Sam Walsh (Merrimack College in Massachusetts).

Dukes qualified for state meet; May logs numerous top finishes

The news was good on the team and individual fronts this season for the York girls cross-country team.

The Dukes took fourth in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division and then went on to finish second at the regional, third at the sectional and 16th at the Class 3A state finals meet.

Senior Sarah May was fourth at the conference meet, fourth at the regional, fifth at the sectional and took 31st in the state. May earned all-conference accolades.

Behind May, junior Lydia Hickey was eighth at the regional and 17th at the sectional. Freshman Katelyn Winton was 10th at the regional and 23rd at the sectional.

Junior Emma Kern was 12th at the regional and 22nd at the sectional, while junior Grace Moriarty was 13th at the regional and 27th at the sectional.

“Our strengths were pack running and having a champion mindset during races,” said York coach Lauren DeAngelis.

DeAngelis watched a host of

new runners improve throughout the season. “With so many new runners on the team I was impressed with how they bonded and really developed a ‘true’ pack when racing,” she said. “I was most impressed with their ability to be mentally tough and focused on their pack running.”

Hickey and Moriarty will be two of many runners returning for the Dukes next season. “Lydia was consistently in our top five and took on a leadership role, pushing the pace in practices and meets,” said DeAngelis. “Grace was extremely consistent all season and had tremendous finishes in all races.”

DeAngelis praised this year’s team and noted the group is in a good spot headed into 2019.

“2018 was a season of dedication, sacrifice and mental focus with an emphasis on pack running,” said DeAngelis. “These 90-plus girls were a complete team and supported each other throughout the year.

They really are a group that has bonded and formed a family. This team has left the program in a better place with positive momentum for a bright future.”

Liam Dacre. “When returning junior Jacob Schmidt went down with an injury, Zach Jordan picked up the slack and so did returning sophomore Liam Dacre who started challenging Zach for the top spot,” Fredrickson noted.

Fredrickson said the next goal on the list is to get the team to the state meet. “Even though the team has made it six consecutive years to the sectional meet, we would like to make it down to Peoria,” he said.

Four vacation destinations for wine lovers

California is uniquely suited to the grape because its warm days allow them to fully ripen; and its cool nights and foggy mornings prevent the grapes from becoming too ripe or getting heat damaged.
