On Friday, Nov. 8, the Independent received a release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Elmhurst Chef of Police Michael Ruth announcing that bond had been set at $100,000 for a Chicago resident who stands accused of burglary to several Elmhurst homes.

Deon Hampton, 28, of Chicago, was charged with residential burglary, a Class 1 Felony, and is currently on parole for residential burglary out of Cook County. Because of his crimi-

nal history, Berlin said Hampton was eligible for Class X sentencing which carries a maximum penalty of up to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Berlin’s release alleges that from Tuesday, Nov. 5 through Thursday, Nov. 7, Hampton burglarized multiple homes in Elmhurst. On at least two occasions, Hampton is believed to have stolen items while the homeowners were either inside the house or were outdoors working on their gardens and lawns.

Elmhurst police identified Hampton

as a suspect during their investigation and found him seated in his vehicle in Bensenville on Thursday, Nov. 7. He was arrested and taken into custody without incident.

“The allegations indicate that during a three-day span, Deon Hampton entered multiple residences, at least two of which were occupied at the time, and stole valuables,” Berlin said.

“These allegations are unacceptable and will be met with the full force and effect of the law.

“In addition to allegedly stealing valuables from his victims, Deon

Hampton’s actions also victimized the entire community, robbing residents of the feeling of safety and security that their home provides.

“I would like to thank the Elmhurst Police Department for their outstanding work in quickly identifying and apprehending Deon Hampton as a suspect in theses burglaries.”

Elmhurst Police Chief Ruth echoed Berlin’s thoughts.

“I would first and foremost like to thank the residents of Elmhurst for their assistance in this case, including providing to us private video surveil-

lance,” Ruth said. “The apprehension of the suspect is a perfect example of the partnership that exists between the community and police working together to keep our neighborhoods safe.”

Hampton’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 25 when he will be arraigned. The matter remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Elmhurst Police Department at (630) 530-3050.

Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.

EYFP’s ‘Art Beats’ gala fundraiser deemed successful artists donated pieces for a silent auction and Kai Sison MacNicol did a live painting accompanied by the Elmhurst College Jazz combo that was also auctioned on site. In addition, a “paddle raise” raised needed funds to support milk, hygiene and other necessary items for the pantry.

A reward in the amount of $1,000 is currently being offered by a family friend for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in the hit-and-run death of Robert J. Szabo of Glen Ellyn. Anyone with information is urged to contact the office of DuPage County Sheriff James Mendrick.

Mendrick’s office is still investigating the incident in which an unknown driver struck and killed 59-year-old Szabo at an intersection near Lombard on Aug. 30 just after 12 midnight.

Investigators are pursuing all possible leads but still need the public’s help in locating the driver of a white Ford F-250 truck with yellow overhead cab lights, who is believed to have struck Szabo at the intersection of Rt. 38 (Roosevelt Road) and Addison Avenue near Lombard. The driver is believed to be a white male in his 40s.

Any witnesses or anyone who may know the driver of the truck or observed the accident are asked to call the County Sheriff’s Office at (630) 407-2400. The driver is also welcome to turn himself in to any local law enforcement agency.

It was 2001, and Steve and Kathleen Rhea were leaving a church event, complete with a bounce house, when Steve mentioned the idea of buying an inflatable. He thought it would be a good way for them to make some cash on the side, and it was something that Kathleen could work on from home while she raised their four children. After further discussion with their longtime friend, turned business partner, Bill Meyer, the deal was sealed.

The fourth cornerstone, added in 2002 to this rapidly growing operation, was their local, trusted bank, Community Bank of Elmhurst (CBE). Bill and the Rhea’s were in the market for more inventory, which in turn meant they were in the market for additional capital. “Without CBE, there would be no AMJ Spectacular Events, and that’s a fact,” stated Steve. “We now have 580 inflatables, an array of engaging items, and expansive event-planning services, and none of that would be possible without CBE’s ongoing trust in us as a family enterprise.”

Together, Steve, Kathleen and Bill navigated the difficult course of building a successful business from the ground up, or rather, the garage up. Remember that first inflatable? It was initially stored in Bill’s garage, and today, AMJSE uses over 35,000 square feet of warehouse to store their continually growing inventory.

“We’ve built a reputation in our industry as a business that always takes the high road,” said Steve. “We don’t cut our clients or our company short in terms of quality, delivery, and price, and our inventory is significant.”

By 2008, AMJSE had become a full-time job-- for everyone. Steve targeted inventory and marketing, and still handles repairs on almost everything.

Kathleen took the reins in the front office as well as financials, and Bill focused on warehouse operations and logistics. Over time, they each found their niche within the company, and all along, CBE was their stable and silent partner for growth. “We operate within five hours of our Melrose Park warehouse,” shared Bill, “although we’ll travel further if the occasion calls.” Their dedication knows no bounds. Over the years, AMJSE has successfully tailored their business to supply the demands of a unique industry.

Cut to 2019, and AMJ Spectacular Events is leading Chicago’s industry of rentals for events and parties of all sizes, from backyard bashes to corporate events with upwards of 20,000 attendees, and anything and everything in between. AMJSE’s inventory includes, though is far from limited to: inflatables, zip lines, movie and casino nights, arcade games, dunk tanks, photo booths, concessions, trackless trains, every game you could imagine, and most recently, an entire warehouse filled with décor and novelty items.

As do the seasons of Chicago, the size of the staff will fluctuate throughout the year. While in the past the company was largely in demand during the warmer months, they’ve recently been seeing an increase of business during the winter months. “We’re looking to continue ramping up our winter business with increased marketing, sharing our success stories, and doing more and more weddings and themed events,” commented Kathleen.

AMJSE delivers fun throughout Chicago all year round: more than 700 block parties each summer, dozens of regional colleges and universities, themed country club parties, events at Navy Pier and other downtown landmarks, and countless parties for individual clients. “All of our events, large or small, and each of our clients are very important to us,” added Kathleen. Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct Nov. 2 A 38-year-old Elmhurst woman was charged with domestic battery in the 200 block of E. May at around 10 p.m. A victim told police he was in a verbal argument with his stepson when the suspect allegedly grabbed his shirt from behind, pulling it, and rendered him unable to breathe.

Criminal trespass, criminal damage to property Nov. 1 A car dealership in the 500 block of W. Lake told police at around 2:49 p.m. that the suspect became upset when the dealership refused to supply him with a loaner vehicle due to lack of identification. When the suspect left the dealership he allegedly damaged the exit door and caused damage to a portable jump start unit.

The dealership did not want to sign complaints but wished to report the incident.

Nov. 6 Ashley Guzman, 30, of Willowbrook, was charged with DUI, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, no valid driver’s license, speeding, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and York at around 12:33 a.m.

Nov. 5 Laurynas Gieba, 36, of Willowbrook, was charged with DUI, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Riverside and Route 83 at around 1:26 a.m.

Nov. 3 Javier Mora-Martinez, 20, of Berwyn, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, disobeying a traffic control device, driving while

license suspended and consumption of alcohol by a minor, while a juvenile suspect was issued citations for violation of curfew, possession of cannabis and consumption of alcohol by a minor subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Third at around 4:48 a.m.

James Moore, 33, of Calumet City, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to at traffic stop near Route 83 at Lake at around 4:09 a.m.

Nov. 2 Aaron J. Gur-Proctor, 35, of Denver, Colo., was issued citations for DUI, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of an open container of alcohol, operating a vehicle with a video device, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop in the 100 block of W. North at around 4:28 p.m.

Chad S. Shepherd, 48, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI, expired registration, no rear registration plate light and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Hagans and Winthrop at around 2:15 p.m.

Nov. 1-Nov. 2 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Third and Clinton at around 12:26 a.m., two juveniles and Jon Myers, 18, of Elmhurst, were issued citations for consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Harassment, threats

Oct. 30 A victim in the 900 block of S. York told police at around 9:16 a.m. that approximately a month ago, a suspect came into their bank branch and attempted to deposit a check that was not made out to her. The suspect was advised she could not deposit it or withdraw money from this check.

The manager observed the suspect attempt to cash the check via ATM after this encounter.

On the above date, the suspect came back to the branch at the above location and reportedly threatened the manager. The suspect was served a trespass notice for that branch, stated she understood the circumstances, and would go to another bank.

A victim in the 600 block of W. Grand told police at around 2:38 p.m. that the suspect had recently been fired from a coffee shop and began making threats that he was going to shoot up the place, but then said he wouldn’t do that and was just kidding. Contact was made with the suspect who denied making any threats. The complainant did not wish to sign complaints and a no-trespass notice was issued to the suspect.

She subsequently received two phishing emails and called the number left in the email. The victim spoke with someone named “Dave” who asked for her Social Security number and a debit card number for payment. The victim provided the suspect with her Social Security number, but not the debit card number. The call was disconnected a short time later.

Nov. 5 Residential burglary was reported in the 700 block of N. Van Auken at around 4:19 p.m. A victim told police that while doing yard work in the back yard, an unknown suspect(s) entered his unlocked home and removed three boxes of migraine medication, cash and a jewelry box.

Forgery was reported at a business in the 500 block of S. York at around 9:26 p.m. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect ordered a double shot of Crown Royal® and paid using a counterfeit $100 bill.

The suspect was described as a black male, around 5-10 and 200 pounds, approximately 50 years old, wearing a dark-colored vest, a red flannel long-sleeved shirt, dark-colored pants and had some facial hair.

Theft was reported in the 100 block of N. York at 9:39 p.m. A complainant told police that a suspect entered the back room of a restaurant and took the complainant’s backpack, which contained his car keys.

The suspect then entered the complainant’s vehicle and took his iPad. The reporting officer contacted the suspect, who subsequently returned to the scene and relinquished the complainant’s property. The suspect was served with a no trespass notice.

The complainant did not wish to pursue charges.

Nov. 1-Nov. 2 Three instances of a person entering an unlocked vehicle were reported between the above dates— two incidents occurring in the 800 block of S. Fairfield and the other occurring in the 900 block of S. Hawthorne. In each instance, an unknown suspect(s) entered an unlocked vehicle but did not take anything.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 300 block of W. Jackson.

A victim told police that she parked her vehicle in her driveway at approximately 10 p.m. Nov. 1, but left it unlocked. When she went back to her vehicle Nov. 2, she realized that unknown suspect(s) had entered her vehicle and stole $10, a cell phone charger and a pair of headphones.

Nov. 1 Theft was reported in the 200 block of N. York at around 10:59 a.m. A victim told police that while at work at a cafe, a suspect stole cash

out of her wallet that was placed in her black jacket on the coat rack located in the general seating area of the restaurant. An investigation is pending.

Oct. 30 Burglary was reported at a gas station in the 300 block of W. Butterfield at around 5:09 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect broke the glass on the front door and gained entry. An investigation is pending.

Warrant arrest

Nov. 6 Police said officers responded to a hotel in the 500 block of W. Grand at around 10:35 p.m. for the report of a suspicious incident where the allegedly intoxicated suspect knocked on a door and entered the complainant’s room. The suspect, Benjamin F. Riechert, 35, of Elmhurst, was unaware that he entered the wrong room, according to police.

The complainant did not wish to pursue charges. However, police said Riechert was found to have a valid warrant out of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. Riechert was arrested and transported to the police station where he was processed on the warrant.

Under my father’s fedora

War stories on the homefront

His name was Bernard Villars Haberer but his friends called him Bill.

During WWI, he was stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor in Louisville, Ky, when he decided to take lessons at Pauline Weaver’s School of Dance.

Weaver had been a professional dancer in the early 1900s and had even danced on the Broadway stage as a Ziegfeld girl.

Weaver had a rule against dating her dance students, but she broke that rule to date Bill Haberer and eventually married him and had a little girl also named Pauline.

The older Pauline died of tuberculosis at the age of 38, when young Pauline was only 11. Bill Haberer later moved to Ft. Worth, Tex., with his young daughter, who later became a student at Texas Christian University (TCU). At that time, World War II was in full swing.

Pauline and a girlfriend went swimming at the pool at the local USO, where they met three servicemen. Pauline had a car so the five of them piled in and went to a nearby lake to go swimming away from the USO. One of those men was Howard Longfellow.

Bill and the first Pauline were my maternal grandparents, and Howard and Pauline were my parents, who met at a USO and were married in 1942.

One spring day in 1967 when I was in 7th grade, I was standing in the hallway outside my parents’ bedroom and overheard them talking.

My brother Joe had received his draft notice. My heart went up in my throat. I had honestly been worried about him going to war since the night he graduated high school in 1966.

Joe was not especially physical, he wasn’t an athlete – instead, he was an outstanding musician. He and his trumpet took top honors at music contests all through high school, one year receiving seven #1 scores, which was an all-school record. Among the seven were three solo performances – on the trumpet, the French horn and the baritone.

Toward the end of basic training, Joe saw a notice on a bulletin board that the Army Band was seeking a French horn player. He stepped up and ended up spending his entire military service performing with the U.S. Army Band in Germany. Eventually, the director moved Joe to the trumpet section, knowing that was his primary instrument.

was killed in Vietnam, reportedly by “friendly fire.” I saw his name when the Traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial came to Elmhurst in 1988. I often think of him, knowing the name on that wall could have been Joe Longfellow.

All those memories came flooding back as about 100 people gathered at Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College for the Veterans Day concert event held Sunday, Nov. 10.

The last song to be performed was Stars & Stripes Forever. As her mother’s student, my mother had danced to that song while a young girl. In the early 1970s, I played the famous piccolo solo that is a part of that song! It was exciting for me to see three piccolo players of the Elmhurst College Wind Ensemble step forward to play that part on Sunday afternoon.

Watching television at this time brings shots of military cemeteries with the rows upon rows of small white crosses, each representing not only a fallen soldier, but also a tearful mother, a heartbroken father, sad and lonely sisters, crushed and disappointed brothers, along with grieving friends and relatives. And all we can do is ask “Why?” For ghost and paranormal enthusiasts If you watch shows like Ghost Hunters, you may have heard of Waverly Hills Sanitarium in Louisville.

It was the largest facility in the nation for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in the 1920s and 30s. My grandmother, who lived in Louisville and had TB, had two different stays at Waverly Hills, my mother told us.

The good news – my grandmother did NOT die at Waverly Hills, she died at home. That makes me happy because when people began dying rapidly, the Sanitarium put in a chute to transport bodies from the upper floors down to the ground and into a waiting truck. That way the other patients didn’t have to watch body after body being carried out of the building.

The Ghost Hunters have a hey-day in that chute. I’m very grateful she did not die there.

Mazzochi, bipartisan group seek ethics reform, Arroyo’s resignation

State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) called for State Representative Luis Arroyo’s (D–Chicago) resignation after news broke of his arrest by federal authorities on bribery allegations.

“It is disgraceful to have one, let alone so many, public corruption investigations encompassing every layer of Illinois government and so many, legislative, judiciary, and executive,” she said. “State government needs a thorough housecleaning from top to bottom.”

Mazzochi identified the comprehensive ethics reforms in House Bill 361 and a bipartisan task force to be created as a start.

Arroyo’s federal bribery charges directly relate to his duties as State Representative, Mazzochi said.

“Illinois has been the poster child for public corruption for decades,” she said. “Public trust in elected officials, on both sides of the aisles, has eroded. It is disgusting to see fellow legislators continually abuse their positions of power… .”

Mazzochi pointed out that Arroyo’s arrest is just the latest in a rash of stories involving Democrat elected officials recently arrested, raided, or investigated by the FBI for alleged criminal behavior at the expense of taxpayers. The list includes Democrat State Senators

Martin Sandoval and Tom Cullerton, among others.

Asked about House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) calling for Arroyo’s resignation, Mazzochi called it “hardly remarkable.”

“If Springfield teaches you anything, it is the lengths to which certain members will go to protect their own power,” she said. “The problem is the culture set by leadership on down. To really make a difference, resignations should start at the top.

“Illinois needs to add teeth to our current ethics statutes. … With the rash of recent news stories outlining criminal behavior, it is obvious that our current laws are not a deterrent.”

At a live painting, the artist appears to brush paint all over a canvas in what appears to be a random way. York honors Dukes of Distinction Elmhurst School District 205 held a recognition program to honor its Dukes of Distinction for 2019.

Launched in 2013, the York Distinguished Alumni Program was designed to recognize and honor York High School alumni who have distinguished themselves through significant and/or extraordinary accomplishments, service and an outstanding contribution to society.

This year’s “Dukes of Distinction” took place on Thursday, Nov. 7, beginning with a reception, followed by a recognition program at 7 p.m. in the York Commons. The following day, the honored Dukes visited classrooms and talked with students in both large and small group settings.

An area pilot has now given more than 700 young people a free demonstration airplane ride as part of the EAA “Young Eagles” program, which is introducing a new generation to the world of flight.

Among the more than 50,000 volunteers around the world who have donated their time and aircraft to the effort is Edward Godfrey of Elmhurst.

All pilots in the Young Eagles program explain the safe operation of airplanes and principles of flight before the short trips. Participating young people become official Young Eagles with the flight. The names of the pilots and the participants are also included in the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on permanent display in the EAA Aviation Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and online through the Young Eagles web site. Young Eagles also have access to an online pilot training course, made possible by Sporty’s Pilot Shops, located in Batavia, Ohio.

The Young Eagles Program was unveiled by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) in July 1992 and has now flown more than 2 million young people, primarily between the ages of 8 and 17. EAA is a worldwide organization with over 200,000 members who enjoy all facets of recreational flight. The Young Eagles program goal is to allow young people to experience positive activities and discover the possibilities available to them within the world of aviation. Two York juniors raise over $11,000 for Access Sports

Celebrating the 50th Day of school

The students at Pythagoras Children’s Academy enjoyed their 50th Day of School with a 50’s Day Celebration. Students and staff dressed and celebrated as if they were from the 1950s. Students enjoyed a sock hop, root beer floats, hula hoop contests as well as dancing to music from the 1950s.

Friends Connor Polomsky and Dylan Stockwell collaborated to create Birdies for Bucks, a program that raises funds for Access Sports, an Elmhurst-based organization providing group sports opportunities for youth with disabilities. In three months, they raised $11,136, with contributions from more than100 donors.

Dylan saw first-hand how Access Sports provided the individualized assistance and coaching his younger brother Sean when learning to play basketball.

“Watching my younger brother learn to play basketball was inspiring,” he said. “This program can take adversity and turn it into opportunity.”

Dylan has been helping with Access Sports’ spaghetti dinner fundraiser since he was 9 years old and has also helped with sports programming throughout his middle school years.

Connor was introduced to Access Sports by a friend and classmate who was also a participant. After attending a spaghetti dinner, he decided that for the next one, he wanted to donate his own money, too.

As York Varsity golfers, both Stockwell and Polomsky were famil-

iar with golf tournament fundraising that ties birdies (one under par) with pledges. They also both knew Access Sports was funded 100% with donations. They contacted Dena Seidenfuss, founder of Access Sports, to ask what was needed and if they could help. Dena told Connor that not only did they need donations for equipment, uniform shirts and facility fees, but also they had wanted to employ an inclusion coach for several years.

The boys approached Coach Jim Borel and asked if he could support their idea of seeking funds for Access Sports through pledges per match or per birdie. Borel was more than supportive and offered to record the scores. Connor and Dylan’s teammates were happy for their scores to be included in fundraising efforts.

Going forward, the boys want to continue their efforts both as part of Dukes golf and during the spring and summer. Ultimately, they hope to establish what they started as an ongoing stream of funding for Access Sports.

“Before we graduate, we want grow this and to be sure there are a couple of teammates to take it over,” said Polomsky.

Access Sports is a non-for-profit organization that partners with local organizations to bring team sports to more than 60 athletes in Elmhurst.

O’Hare, Midway offer short waits in customs, study says According to data provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, regarding which major international airports have the shortest wait times, Chicago’s O’Hare Airport topped the list as one of the most efficient airports by processing 485 incoming passengers every 15 minutes. Orlando International only managed 120 passengers in the same time, according to the data.

Midway Airport had the second-lowest average wait time, at 5.5 minutes.

If you want to beat the crowds, the best time to arrive at O’Hare is between 10-11 p.m., when the average wait time to clear customs is less than nine minutes.

The worst time to arrive at O’Hare is between 3- 4 p.m., when customs wait time may be 20 minutes or longer.

Choral Union, Orchestra to perform ‘Music Of Christmas’ Elmhurst Choral Union and Orchestra present “The Music of Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Guest soloists Kristin Lelm, Kimberly Gunderson, and Melissa Arning join Elmhurst Choral Union and a professional orchestra under conductor Scott Uddenberg for a variety of Christmas-themed music.

The concert features Vivaldi’s Gloria, along with a jazz-influenced mix of Alfred Burt carols, music from the movie Home Alone, and a carol sing-along.

The win moves IC Catholic Prep to 10-1 and sends it to this weekend’s Class 4Astate quarterfinals on the road at undefeated Richmond-Burton (11-0). Richmond is the No. 2 seed in the top half of the 4A bracket, while the Knights are the No. 3 seed. If IC Catholic Prep wins, it will host a state semifinal game next weekend.

The win also was IC Catholic Prep’s 17th in a row in the post season and second against Stillman Valley in as many years.

Stillman led 7-0 after the first quarter and that slight edge held through halftime. The game was tied 14-14 after three quarters before IC Catholic Prephung three touchdowns on the Cardinals in the final quarter.

The Knights running game was on point again, rushing for 291 yards on 31carries (9.4 yards per carry). Kyle Franklin ran 17 times for 207 yards and scored four touchdowns. Quarterback Danny Cronin ran 12 times for 60 yards, while sophomore Nakiyan Weathers ran two times for 24 yards.

Franklin has now run for 1,452 yards on 144 carries (10.1 yards per carry) and has 25 rushing touchdowns. The IC Catholic Prep offense is averaging 253.4 rushing yards per game and 8.7 yards per carry.

Cronin completed 8 of 16 passes for 124 yards and one touchdown.

Chauncey Lee came up big with five catches for 101 yards and the one touchdown. He had along catch of 69 yards.

One of the keys to the IC Catholic Prep football team’s long-term success is the constant legion of contributors it has year after year.

And many of those contributors pull double duty on both sides of the ball.

This season, Chauncey Lee has added his name to that never-ending list of Knights prime-time players.

Lee has been a favorite target of quarterback Danny Cronin, and also has been a major player on an IC Catholic Prep defense that has allowed 103 points through 11 games. After beating Stillman Valley 35-14 this past weekend, Lee and IC Catholic Prep (10-1) head north to Richmond Saturday to face Richmond-Burton in the Class 4A state quarterfinals.

On offense, Lee had 30 catches for 491 yards (16.4 yards per catch) and

five touchdowns through 10 games.

His long catch was 66 yards.

On the other side of the ball, Lee had 24 tackles, one interception and five pass deflections.

“For me knowing that the seniors left from last year, I had to step up as a leader on the team and play with more confidence,” Lee said. “That has helped me out. Being a leader has helped our team along the way.”

Lee said he has learned plenty from previous senior classes. “We have to work for everything we have,” he said.

“Nothing is handed to us. That was instilled in us by the people before us.

We have to work for everything.”

Lee, who also plays basketball at IC Catholic Prep, said he uses his quickness to his advantage as a wide receiver, and has worked on the mental side of the game in the defensive backfield.

“I have been trying to play smarter,” he said. “I watch more film and that helps me know what the wide receivers’ strengths and weaknesses are.

That’s helped me be smarter.”

Looking at IC Catholic Prep’s body

of work in 2019, Lee said the team is filled with players who make things happen. “We are strong because we have athletes who do things,” he said.

“We have a quarterback who is a freak of nature, a running back who is a freak of nature and an offensive line that is great.”

Team chemistry, Lee said, also factors into the equation. “The bond and friendships we have are strong,” he said. “We love to compete. Playing in this program means a lot to me. It’s helped me become the person I am today. This program teaches you about leadership and most importantly it teaches you all the things you need in your life to be a good man.”

And as IC Catholic Prep prepares for its Class 4A quarterfinal game this week in another playoff rematch from a year ago, Lee said the strategy going forward is simple. “We have to take it one game at a time and the next one starts this week,” he said. “If we take it one game at a time, we get to play for the person beside you and enjoy another week with our brothers.”

Timothy Christian wins sectional title

The Timothy Christian girls volleyball team defeated IC Catholic Prep 25-23, 25-19 in last week’s IHSA Class 2A sectional championship match. The Trojans advanced to Friday’s super-sectional contest in Johnsburg following their Nov. 6 victory on IC Catholic Prep’s home court in Elmhurst.

York’s Polach wins WSC Silver 500 freestyle girls swimming title Woolfe third in frosh-soph IM

The York girls swimming team placed fifth at the recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet hosted by Downers Grove North.

York finished with 137 points.

The Dukes also were sixth at the frosh-soph level with 123.5 points.

York’s key varsity highlight was Amanda Polach winning the WSC Silver 500 freestyle title with a time of 5:12.84, which was well ahead of the second-place finisher from Hinsdale Central who clocked in at 5:17.46.

The cut to make the state finals meet in the 500 this season is 5:09.03.

Last week: IC Catholic Prep 35, Stillman Valley 14; Richmond 49, Marengo 7 Last year: IC Catholic Prep 28, Richmond 9, state semifinals Outlook: IC Catholic Prep continues its roll down playoff memory lane. Last week, the three-time defending state-champion Knights defeated Stillman Valley, a team it faced a year earlier in the second round of the playoffs. Now, IC Catholic Prep gets a rematch with Richmond-Burton a round earlier than last year, but this time in enemy territory. Richmond is located in far northern McHenry County, the last town before the Wisconsin state line on routes 31/12. Richmond, under the direction of successful longtime prep coach Mike Noll, plays in the fairly new Kishwaukee River Conference that is a hybrid of McHenry County teams that formerly resided in the Fox Valley and Big Northern conferences. The conference has six members and only two, Richmond and Richmond’s second-round opponent Marengo, made the playoffs.

Richmond beat Marengo both times. Richmond’s four non-conference games were against 4-5 Wauconda, 1-8 Aurora Central Catholic, a second game against conference foe Johnsburg 4-5), and a Week 9 matchup against Quincy Notre Dame, which went 7-3 in the regular season and is in the Class 3A state quarterfinals this weekend. If you look at commonality on the schedule, IC Catholic Prep beat Aurora Central Catholic 56-0, while Richmond beat ACC 50-0 on the road.

Despite going on the road into a football-crazed town, this one favors the defending champions.

Up next: The winner of this game faces either No. 4 Wheaton St. Francis (10-1) or No. 1 Coal City (11-0) in the Class 4A semifinals. If IC wins, it will host the state semifinal game regardless of opponent.

Coal City has hosted three playoff games, which would give IC the home game based on one fewer playoff game at home heading into the state semis. St. Francis and IC would have the same number of hosted games (2), but IC is the higher seed (3 vs. 4). If St. Francis and IC win, it would create a heck of a rematch at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst next weekend (St. Francis handed IC Catholic Prep its only loss of the season). Seeds in the lower part of the bracket have not held up, as the Nos. 9, 10 and 12 seeds still are alive, as well as the No. 3 seed (Effingham).

Jones took 10th in the frosh-soph 500 at 5:48.6. York was fourth in the frosh-soph 200 relay with Natalie Beltran, Jensen, Woolfe and Julia Beltran swimming 1:46.02. The Dukes took fifth in the varsity 200 relay with Emma Stec, Madison Sardo, Knott and Pfaff swimming 1:48.58.

Sophia Locascio was 11th in the frosh-soph backstroke at 1:11.01, while Polach was sixth in the varsity backstroke at 1:01.64.

Woolfe was fourth in the frosh-soph breaststroke at 1:12.16.

Honken was seventh in the varsity breaststroke at 1:11.54.

York took sixth in the frosh-soph 400 relay with Natalie Beltran, Jones, Locascio and Jensen swimming 4:01.79. York was fifth in the varsity 400 relay with Walker, Sardo, Pfaff and Polach finishing at 3:52.45.

York swims in its own York sectional this Saturday where berths in the state finals meet will be on the line.

York girls volleyball team wraps up play in sectional

The York girls volleyball team wrapped up its season after a 2523, 25-21 loss to Downers Grove North in the semifinals of the Class 4A Glenbard West sectional in Glen Ellyn.

York was the No. 2 seed in the sectional, while Downers Grove North was the No. 3 seed.

Junior Gigi Barr led the Dukes with 12 kills on 36 swings. Katie Norgle, Sydney Krueger, Stella Bar and Emily Fleckenstein each had three kills. York hit .216 in the match, while Downers Grove North hit .145.

Stella Barr added five total blocks.

Norgle had 14 digs, while Gigi Barr had seven digs and Fleckenstein finished with five digs. Fleckenstein had 21 setting assists.

York reached the sectional after recording a 25-19, 25-20 win over Hinsdale Central to win the Class 4A York regional title on its home floor.

Hinsdale Central was the No. 7 sectional seed.

Gigi Barr had 11 kills, while Stella Barr had five kills and Norgle had four kills. York hit .250 in the match.

Fleckenstein had three service aces.

Kevin Cooke made 13 tackles to lead the Knights on defense. Kevin Akins and sophomore Jaydon Mims each had seven tackles, while Antonio Richardson, also a sophomore, had five tackles.

Of key importance, IC Catholic Prep had five quarterback sacks, with Richardson and Akins each registering two sacks. AJ Howard had one sack. Lee added an interception on defense, while Cronin had a pass deflection, as did Howard. Akins caused a fumble and recovered it. Tommy Sloan kicked five extra points.

York had five aces as a team. Krueger added four total blocks. Elise Pedote had 14 digs, while Gigi Barr had nine digs and Norgle finished with six digs. Fleckenstein had 19 assists.

York opened the postseason with a 25-22, 14-25, 25-9 win against Glenbard North in the regional semifinals.

Glenbard North was the No. 15 sectional seed.

Gigi Barr finished with 16 kills, while Stella Barr had eight kills and Norgle had six. York hit .377 in the three-set match. Fleckenstein and Norgle each had two aces. Pedote and Fleckenstein each had 11 digs, while Norgle had 10 digs. Fleckenstein finished with 29 assists.

York finished the season with a 29-8 overall record. York has now won 10 regional titles under coach Patty Iverson, including five since 2014.

Gigi Barr finished the year with 478 kills on 1,075 swings and hit a strong .327. Norgle had 186 kills, while Stella Barr had 136 kills.

Fleckenstein led the team in service aces with 46. Stella Barr was tops in blocks with 97 and tied with Krueger for the team lead in solo blocks with 30. Pedote was the team leader in digs with 316. Norgle had 292, while Gigi Barr had 268 and Fleckenstein finished with 232 digs. Fleckenstein also had 679 setting assists.

Timothy Christian girls volleyball team wins sectional title Trojans beat crosstown foe IC Catholic Prep to advance to Class 2A’s final eight teams

The third time was the charm for the Timothy Christian girls volleyball team.

The Trojans were 25-23, 25-19 winners over crosstown foe IC Catholic Prep in the title game of the Class 2A IC Catholic Prep sectional in Elmhurst.

The win gave Timothy its third sectional title in program history.

Timothy also beat IC Catholic Prep for the first time in three tries this season.

“To beat IC after they beat us twice and winning at their place after losing at their place three weeks ago feels good,” said Timothy coach Scott Piersma. “Our girls played super well and super hard. We prepared well. Except for a crazy run in the second set, we controlled the whole thing.”

Piersma said defense fueled Timothy to victory. “Our defense was really strong,” he said. “When we played them there a few weeks ago we had eight or nine blocks. This time we had seven blocks. They are heavy with go-

ing to their outside hitters. We planned for that and set up our defense that way. We played great defense. Alli Myers was great with her digging and Sophie Labuda was chasing balls out of the middle back. I always tell the girls if you can do what the other team is normally trying to do to you, you will frustrate them. IC is an excellent defensive team, but we won the majority of those long rallies. We fought them hard and were able to jump on them.”

Piersma also lauded the efforts of Greta Hoogstra in the middle and Amanda Leibrock. “Greta was a strong presence with how tall she

is and how long her arms are,” said Piersma. “Amanda is a sophomore who came in after not playing a lot and was getting up there pretty well. If we had seven blocks, she was part of four of them. She was there for us big-time defensively.”

The win moved Timothy to 17-21 overall and sent it north to a Class 2A supersectional at Johnsburg where the Trojans dropped a 25-22, 25-23 contest to Rockford Lutheran, which will play in the state semifinals this weekend in Normal at Illinois State University. The Trojans were looking for their second state semifinals appearance since 2015.

“17-21 still doesn’t sound amazing,” said Piersma. “At this point it doesn’t matter. We have two plaques now (regional and sectional). It’s not necessarily what we would have thought earlier in the year, but we are certainly in the zone right now. We were ready for IC and took it to them right away and took control.”

Timothy reached the sectional final after a 25-2, 25-7 win over Chicago Christ the King in the semifinals at IC Catholic Prep. Annie Taylor had seven kills, while Hannah Schuringa added six kills. Labuda had four aces and three digs, while Myers had two aces and two digs.

Junior Colin Hill was next in 51st place with a time of 15:04.68. Senior Ethan Kern finished 53rd with a time of 15:06.02 to round out the York scoring.

Senior Max Lupo finished 88th with a time of 15:21.20, while senior Will Yasdick was 111th with a time of 15:29.36.

Yasdick cut 29.53 seconds from

his state time a year ago, while Klysh, who finished 43rd in the state as a junior with a time of 14:59.59, cut 24.85 seconds. Moriarty shaved 21:26 seconds from his state time last season, while Pratt shaved 6.75 seconds from his 2018 state time.

York was fourth in the state in 2018 and 2015, fifth in 2013, sixth in 2017 and 2014 and 16th in the state in 2016.

For most teams, just getting to the state cross country meet is a big deal.

The York boys cross country team isn’t just any team. Success here is measured in state trophies the perennial powerhouse program collects.

And the Dukes did just that in Peoria this past weekend, ending a seven-year podium drought and finishing a stellar campaign by finishing third at the Class 3A state meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

York has now has 46 state trophy finishes to its credit, including a record 28 state championships to go with 12 runner-up endings and now six third-place finishes. York’s last podium came in the 2012 season when it won its 28th state crown.

IC Catholic Prep Girls Cross Country The IC Catholic Prep girls cross country team finished eighth at the Class 1A state meet in Peoria.

The Knights ended with 277 points. Winnebago won the state title with 63 points.

Sophomore Carly Manchester was IC Catholic Prep’s highest place finisher. She took 12th overall in 17:47.76 for three miles.

Sophomore Kennedy Calcagno was 51st with a time of 18:46.61. Junior Frankie Chaidez took 61st with
