Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley and the staff of the City’s economic development department hosted the annual Real Estate Forum last week, where builders, architects and realtors come together to catch up on what’s new.

Some of the biggest changes residents can expect over the next six to 12 months are coming to No. Addison Street in downtown, with two major planned projects, one underway and another breaking ground later this year or early 2019 The first is the 195 Condos project, which is expected to be 20 highend luxury condominiums that are all corner units, all three-bedrooms plus a den. State Representative Deanne Mazzocchi and her husband have an interest in that property, having contacted the City previously about the location.

A special meeting of the Public Works & Buildings (PWB) Committee was held on Monday, Oct. 29 to discuss stormwater relief for the property. According to Erin Jason, who works in the City’s economic development division, the meeting was scheduled in order to allow the 195 project to stay on its timeline for completion.

Another project planned for Addison Street is on the site of the medical building located at 183 No. Addison. All physicians and medical staff will be moving to the new Elmhurst Clinic building on Schiller St. near Palmer Drive by the end of the year. Once the building is vacant, the developer is planning to build a 217-unit apartment complex, mostly one-bedrooms and a few studios with an alcove. They have applied for zoning variances for height and architectural setbacks.

More updates and changes were announced at the forum, including an influx of as many as 72 new businesses coming to the Elmhurst area. The Independent will provide more details when they become available.

Perhaps the most recent contribution has been Jordan’s work with the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation and the Elmhurst History Museum.

She served on the Foundation Board since its inception in 2007 and was elected president and vice-president over the last 13 years.

“Both organizations have benefited greatly from her experience as a community leader and her skill as a community organizer,” he said.

Another group to enjoy Jordan’s good works is the DuPage Senior Citizens Council (DSCC), where she has served as a site manager and recently took on the challenge of volunteer coordinator. In 2013, she was named Director of Volunteer Services, in which she conducts monthly volunteer orientations and manages thousands of volunteers for DuPage and Kane Counties.

“We are so grateful to have Cathy involved in our organization,” said Marylin Krolak, executive director of the DSCC. “She is kind, loyal and compassionate when it comes to our volunteers.”

As another of the speakers for

the evening, Joel Morris, former Superintendent of Elmhurst School District 205, pointed out two specific things that Cathy was a strong advocate for – Voc-Ed and what he called “the kids in the middle.”

“She strongly supported the VocEd program at York, noting that not all students are cut out for college,” Morris said. “She knew Voc-Ed in high school was the best way to learn a trade and not have to pay for it.

“Cathy also recognized that some students have Advanced Placement (AP) classes and others have special needs, but she was concerned for the ‘middle kids’ – the ones who may fall through the cracks.”

The award is presented Finally, Bill Fergus, current president of the Elmhurst Jaycees, presented the award.

“I met Cathy when she was planning the Elmhurst Craft Beer Fest and was looking for sponsors,” he said. “Like everyone else who meets Cathy, I was immediately impressed with her ability to connect and energetic personality.

Even though she was the one reaching out, she ended up helping the Jaycees become further engrained in the community. Cathy fully embraces the spirit of the Jaycees and what the DSA award represents.

“I could not be happier with this year’s recipient.”

Rotary, Diplomat West to host annual Thanksgiving dinner For the 25th consecutive year, the Elmhurst Rotary Club will welcome area residents to a complimentary Thanksgiving dinner.

The annual holiday party, co-hosted with the Diplomat West Banquet Hall, begins at 12 noon on Nov. 22 and is open to the whole community.

“Celebrating our 25th year, we once again extend a special invitation to residents who may be alone or without another place to celebrate the holiday,” said Chairman Bill Sakash.

Elmhurst Rotarians, family members and community volunteers will serve guests a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

A jazz combo from York High school, under the direction of Mike Pavlik, will add a festive atmosphere for this joyful occasion.

On the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 24, more than 100 people came to the Diplomat West Banquet Hall to honor Cathy Jordan, recipient of the Elmhurst Jaycees 66th Annual Distinguished Service Award (DSA).

The evening began with a welcome from Julie Miller Sheehan, who had nominated Jordan for the prestigious award.

“Cathy exudes true leadership by example and always asks others to get involved,” Miller said in her nomination. “[She] not only epitomizes distinguished service, she also exemplifies the last line of the Jaycee Creed: ‘We believe…that service to humanity is the best work of life.’”

Before dinner, Ken Bartels offered an invocation, beginning with a moment of silence for Jackie Haddad, who passed away just the week before. Like Cathy Jordan, Jackie was a tireless community volunteer and was bestowed with the DSA in 1987.

A prominent figure in the Elmhurst community for more than 45 years, Cathy Jordan’s activities have all been directed toward the improvement of the quality of life in Elmhurst through her philanthropic efforts for several charities and organizations. Among her numerous works, she was elected to three terms on the District 205 School Board, where she was president for three years. She was also a member of the PTA Council, the DuPage Illinois School Board Association and the DuPage Intermediate Educational Cooperative.

Beyond the school district, she served on the Board of Directors for the Elmhurst YMCA and, for 12 years and still to this day, Jordan has worked for the Elmhurst Senior Citizen Commission, acting as Chair for the past seven years.

told police at around 11:10 p.m. that during a chance encounter at gas station, the suspect issued a veiled threat to damage the victim’s car.

The victim and the suspect are neighbors who do not get along with each other.

Assault, battery

Oct. 22 A subject in the 400 block of S. Mitchell told police at around 12:54 p.m. that for the past few weeks she has been caring for the victim’s husband who is bedridden. On the above date, the subject stated that the victim battered her while trying to push her out of the house. Subsequent to an investigation, there was no evidence substantiating the subject’s claim and she appeared to be the aggressor by refusing to leave the house. No complaints are to be signed.

Criminal damage

Oct. 17-Oct. 18 Police said the victim’s father came into the police station to report that an unknown suspect “keyed” the passenger side of his vehicle while it was parked near the York High School football stadium. The damage was believed to have happened on Oct. 16, but was not noticed until Oct. 17.

Oct. 15-Oct. 18 A victim in the 100 block of N. Avon told police that an unknown suspect scratched the side of her car while it was parked in her driveway sometime between the above dates.

Disorderly conduct

Oct. 23 Robert Fordyce, 68, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-public intoxication in the 100 block of N. York at around 7:35 p.m.

Oct. 22 A complainant in the 200 block of W. First told police at around 10:47 p.m. that during a basketball game, a suspect balled up his fists, aggressively approached the complainant, used foul language and threatened to have the complainant killed. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 25 years old, around 5’9”, 215 pounds, wearing a white T-shirt, black shorts and an orange wristband.

An investigation is pending.

Domestic battery, domestic incident

Oct. 23 A victim in the 500 block of Comstock told police at around 8:34 p.m. that she and her father were involved in a verbal argument.

During the argument, the father reportedly damaged the victim’s cell phone to prevent her from calling her mother. The victim collected some belongings and left the house for the day.

Oct. 24 Ralph A. Amabile, 39, of Bloomingdale, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, improper turn and failure to signal subsequent

Oct. 23 Jennifer Schachner, 33, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI near North and York at around 7:53 p.m.

Oct. 22 Timothy Peters, 25, of Downers Grove, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, disobeying a traffic control device and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Schiller at around 1:14 a.m.

Oct. 21 Benito Flores, 35, of Northlake, was charged with DUI drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, obstructing identification, illegal transportation of alcohol and no valid driver’s license in the 100 block of W. Third at around 12:56 a.m. Police said Flores was found at the above location, was found to be DUI and attempted to conceal suspected heroin.

Oct. 20 Michael Burzawa, 20, of Wood Dale, was charged with zero tolerance, consumption of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation of alcohol and possession of drug paraphernalia subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 2:45 a.m.

Todd Grikmanus, 48, of Worth, was charged with DUI in the 100 block of Adelaide at around 9:59 p.m. Police said Grikmanus was located passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle with his head on the horn, and was found to be DUI. Daniel Iglesias, 23, of Hanover Park, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of open alcohol and possession of cannabis subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 2:12 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop for obstructing traffic near York and Second at around 12:51 a.m., an unnamed suspect was found to be DUI. The suspect was also in possession of suspect PCP. The suspect was released without charges pending lab results.

Oct. 19 Malgorzata Bednarz, 40, of Oak Brook, was charged with DUI, endangering the life of a child, improper lane usage and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 11:30 p.m.

Oliver Martinez-Toledo, 31, of Lombard, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at 1:15 a.m.

Harassment, threats

Oct. 22 A victim in the 200 block of E. Butterfield

Oct. 20 A complainant in the 900 block of S. Riverside told police at around 10:50 a.m. that the suspect, his ex-nanny, continues to contact the complainant and recently attended an event he hosted. The complainant is concerned for the safety of his family and has opened a stalking investigation with the Chicago Police Department. An officer made contact with the suspect and advised her to cease all contact with the complainant and his family.

Oct. 15-Oct. 18 Police said the mother of a victim in the 900 block of S. Mitchell related she was getting harassing phone calls and text messages about her son between the above dates after he had an argument with a suspect. The victim’s mother does not know how her number was obtained by the unknown suspect.

Sept. 29 A victim in the 300 block of N. York told police at around 7:15 p.m. that the suspect has been contacting her via text, showing up at her place of employment and sending her gifts. A reporting officer contacted the suspect who admitted to contacting the victim and apologized for his actions. The suspect was told not to have any further contact with the victim.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Oct. 21 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop for wrong way driving, Christian Morales, 22, of Chicago, was found to be in possession of cannabis. According to police, Morales admitted to selling cannabis. Morales was charged with possession of cannabis with intent to deliver.

Trevon Price, 20, of Villa Park, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to an investigation of a suspicious vehicle near Prairie and South at around 11:23 a.m. Police said Price was found to be in possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia.

Oct. 19 Joel Sierra, 18, of Franklin Park, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a roadside safety check near Lake and Walnut at around 11:44 p.m.

Oct. 18 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Second and York at around 5:03 p.m., Elizabeth Nelson, 34, of Chicago, a passenger in the vehicle, was found to be in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia. Nelson was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Gavin Szymanski, 20, of Itasca, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and one tail light subsequent to a traffic stop near York and North at around 11:10 p.m.

Missing person

Oct. 24 A complainant told police that the subject left for school in her vehicle and did not return home. The subject took the complainant’s credit card and the online statement

showed the card was used in Indiana to purchase a cell phone and wireless plan. The subject recently ran away, was located in Wisconsin, and told his friend he was going to run away again. The subject was entered into LEADS. On Oct. 25 at 2 a.m., the subject was located and taken into protective custody in Clark County, Ohio.

Suspicious circumstances

Oct. 13 Police said a member of the Elmhurst YMCA located a fictitious $100 bill at around 12:05 p.m. The bill had Chinese letters on the front and back. The U.S. Secret Service was contacted and it related the bills are made in China and are used to train financial institutions in dealing with U.S. currency.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Oct. 24 Steven M. Vivar, 26, of Addison, was charged with identity theft in the 500 block of W. St. Charles at around 6:04 p.m. A complainant related that Vivar obtained an iPhone valued at $1,449 using fraudulent identification and left the scene, according to police.

The complainant called the account holder and was advised no one was authorized to use his account information. The suspect allegedly entered a Verizon store in another jurisdiction and was taken into custody.

Oct. 23 Theft was reported in the 600 block of S. Hawthorne at around 7:53 a.m. A victim told police that he received a phone call from a person identifying herself as a Comcast employee. The female caller advised the victim of suspicious activity on the victim’s account.

The victim then allowed remote access to his home computer system. The victim was then instructed to purchase Google Play cards and supply the caller with the card information.

The victim complied with that request. The victim then phoned Comcast and spoke with an employee who informed him he was a fraud victim.

Oct. 22 A victim in the 400 block of W. Butterfield told police at around 1:20 p.m. that she was missing currency from her purse and believes her caregiver may have taken the money. The victim was not able to provide any suspect information.

Oct. 21 Theft was reported in the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 4:20 p.m. A victim told police that he went out with friends and believes his phone was stolen after he misplaced it. He does not know where he lost his phone. The phone’s last location pinged in Oak Lawn, but has since been turned off.

Oct. 20 A victim in the 300 block of S. Spring told police at around 9:54 p.m. that he lost his wallet and subsequently recovered it in the men’s washroom. The victim stated the wallet was now missing $67.

Oct. 19 Zenai Kirklewski, 49, of Addison, was charged with retail theft. A complainant told

County Board poses referenda questions on Nov. 6 ballot

The DuPage County Board has put three tax-related referendum questions on the Nov. 6th General Election ballot.

It should be noticed that the ques-

tions are not binding, but rather, are seeking voters’ opinions on certain issues.

Two of the questions are seeking voters’ input on revenue-raising proposals being debated in Springfield.

One asks voters to weigh in on a proposal to help reduce state debt.

The other asks for opinions on an alternative method to fund transportation projects. The third question focuses on the County’s Accountability, Consolidation, and Transparency (ACT) Initiative.

“Responses to these questions will

provide the Board with important feedback and guidance as various proposals are debated in Springfield,” said County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. “Our residents already face some of the highest property taxes in the nation.”

The referendum questions will appear on the ballot as follows: • “Shall DuPage County oppose the General Assembly instituting a property tax increase equivalent to 1% of your home’s value to help retire state debt?”

Local woman still gives humanitarian aid to Chernobyl victims three decades later Where were you on April 26, 1986?

That is the date of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster. One local woman, Patricia Cox, (from Poplar Grove, Ill.) was there, just 60 miles away in Kiev.

Patricia writes in the opening pages of her new book CHAIN REACTION: “The villages of Pripyat (pop. 10,000) and Chernobyl (pop. 20,000), which had been built to support the power plant and all the services needed for the workers’ families, were evacuated on the second day after the explosion.

The families were loaded onto buses and taken at least twenty miles beyond what was then perceived to be the “high-risk zone.” The authorities told them to bring just their documents and enough clothes and food for three days.

They neglected to tell them they would never be coming back.

“I felt a deep personal connection to these Ukrainian families because I was [there] as part of a group of sixty people from the U.S. on a Peace and Friendship Mission. Though we did not know it while we were there, the Chernobyl #4 nuclear reactor

was spewing dangerous amounts of radioactive particles into the atmosphere for several days after the initial explosion.”

All these years later, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus are still dealing with the radiation exposure which has been linked to death, chronic health issues and birth deformities among thousands of people. And Patricia Cox is still providing humanitarian aid.

Her book tells the story of what happened with their tour group and what happened after she returned to the United States. Patricia was grateful to be able to get on a plane and go home.

State Rep seeks to stiffen penalties against bail jumpers In response to a significant spike in “failure to appear in court” cases in DuPage County, State Representative Deanne Mazzochi is championing legislation that strengthens penalties for bail jumpers and improves public safety.

“Since the new Bail Reform Act took effect on January 1 of this year, DuPage County has experienced an alarming increase in the number of instances where accused people who are out on bail are skipping court-ordered appearances,” said Mazzochi.

“For Category A offenses, which include serious felonies like domestic battery, burglary and aggravated assault, we saw an 83% increase in failures to appear, and for Category B offenses we saw a 71% increase.

This tells me that we are not properly

incentivizing people to show up in court. Especially in instances where an accused person knows he or she is guilty, they are deciding they would rather take their chances and flee than appear in court to answer to the charges brought against them.”

Through HB 5980, proposed changes to the Bail Reform Act include: • Individuals who are out on bail and fail to appear in court would be charged with a failure to appear offense of the same Class (instead of the next lower Class) of the original crime with which he/she has been charged.

• Failure to appear offenders would not be eligible for probation for bail jumping.

All was admirable and acceptable – advantageous even – that a.m.

I arrived at my work area early, adhered to my agenda and had accomplished an abundance of article assembly by afternoon. And then I had lunch – avocado salad with apples and almonds (apricot dressing).

Upon finishing my food, I returned directly to my computer, only to discover the problem with the keys.

One of them no longer functioned when pressed. I punched it. Nothing.

Punched down twice. Still nothing.

Sigh.

It was the “A.” I no longer had air, admiration, altruism, the ampersand or Amazon. I felt annihilated, or I would have if I had access to the appropriate letters.

I tried troubleshooting, without success. I pulled the key from its spot to remove dust or dirt from under it.

No luck. I couldn’t continue typing without the lost letter. Or I didn’t wish to. It hindered my morning progress immensely. I needed to restore my A/a.

When you lose your A/a you know without question the time is nigh to order your new keybo*rd.

Trouble is, I’m finicky when it comes to keybo*rds. You get used to the specifics of one; conforming to the new model is often testy. To further dirty the complexity of my problem, my keybo*rd is built specifically for my type of computer so picking one up from the superstore isn’t possible.

State Rep. objects to opponent’s campaign literature Caffrey adamantly denies accusations he was “hand-picked” by Madigan

Supporters of Jim Caffrey called on State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi to cease and desist the claims about Caffrey, a Democratic candidate for State Rep in the 47th District and Mazzochi’s opponent put out by the Republican Organization of Illinois.

To hammer home the point, a group from Caffrey’s camp showed up on Mazzochi’s office doorstep – or tried to, until they found themselves locked out.

On the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 22, Jim Caffrey’s campaign office began receiving calls and texts from residents about a mailer they had just received from the Republican Party Organization of Illinois.

The mailer claimed that Jim Caffrey was the “handpicked candidate of Speaker Mike Madigan.” The calls and texts continued throughout the evening and into the next morning.

Caffrey has insisted throughout the campaign that he is not connected to Madigan and will not be “a puppet.” Besides that, he has not and will not be accepting any campaign contributions from Madigan’s organization to avoid any indebtedness to him. Caffrey made the point in several of his own mailers and at various public forums that he will think and act independently of Madigan, when appropriate.

“The residents of the 47th Dis-

trict of Illinois need to be told the truth about why I decided to run for this office and who the incredible people are supporting this campaign with their dollars, hours, and prayers,” Caffrey said. “Not a single one of them is named Michael Madigan.”

On Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. candidate Jim Caffrey and a score of residents from the 47th District arrived at the offices of State Rep. Mazzochi to find they had been locked out of the building at 1 South Cass Avenue in the middle of the day in downtown Westmont. Representative Mazzochi also refused to even respond to two requests made by the Caffrey campaign to publicly denounce these ads.

“I expected integrity and honesty from a woman who calls herself a leader,” said Elmhurst resident Christine Cockman. “Clearly she does not have the character to lead and engage others with positive action. She’s shown her divisive leadership so maybe she’s more like Madigan than she can admit…”

and that fact haunted her. Feeling a call to “Do Something,” Patricia founded the Ukrainian-American Family Network, a cross-cultural humanitarian aid project, one she still operates to this day.

CHAIN REACTION tells the unique story of this incredible project, as well as the stories, in their own words, of the families who were evacuated. Patricia has become fairy godmother and long-distance grandmother to these families.

She writes that her book offers “a multi-leveled understanding about this catastrophic event. There is the personal point of view of, “Oh my God, what was it like to be 60 miles from an exploding nuclear plant?”

There is also the universal human question to try to understand the complexity of, “Where do you begin to build your life again from nothing?”

Or, you could focus on the aftermath of the crisis, and look at how people pulled together to help themselves, knowing they couldn’t count on (nor wait for) help from their government. A systematic plan was conceived by two ordinary women across the globe from each other to create a “Ukrainian-American Family Network.” The goal was to target very specific needs, such as psychological

support, vitamins, and medicines, clothes and shoes. Our hope was that this aid would help maintain some of the victims of the Chernobyl disaster, and help them move toward a healthier life.”

Patricia just returned (September 2018) from yet another trip to visit the families and this time to also gift them a copy of her book along with the vitamins and medicines she ships every year. She has indeed helped hundreds of families move toward a healthier life and they were thrilled to see their pictures and stories in print.

They told it was the best gift yet.

Now more than ever it is important to read such books and recognize that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. Patricia’s goal in writing her book was to empower others to Do Something, whatever tugs your heart to help someone else. She knows firsthand the lasting effect of kindness and hope, and she is a testament that mankind can and does still operate from the heart. No matter who we are, where we are, or what we have, we all can Do Something.

ICGS moves its feet to give a child a seat On Friday, Oct. 19, a little sprinkle could not dampen the spirits of students at Immaculate Conception Grade School, as they took a stroll around their neighborhood block to raise awareness for Catholic Education.

“Move Your Feet to Give a Child a Seat” is an effort, initiated by the Diocese of Joliet’s Catholic Education Foundation, to raise scholarship funds and awareness for Catholic education. ICGS students completed their walk at a dance party in the ICGS parking lot. As Mr. Mark Watson, the school’s music teacher served as DJ, students showed off their dance moves and got a great workout! This outing also served as a “brain break,” a scheduled Active Brain Learning opportunity. Several years ago, ICGS began an Active Brain Learning initiative where students use movement activities throughout their day to stimulate brain activity.

The Samaritan’s Purse Project will deliver the gifts to children affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine.

This year, they hope to collect more than 9,150 gifts to contribute to the 2018 global goal of reaching 11 million children.

In celebration of National French Week in early November, Elmhurst College will present The Face of Integration in Europe, a conversation with Guillaume Lacroix, the consul general of France while he is visiting Chicago.

The Face of Integration in Europe will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge on the campus of Elmhurst College.

Lacroix became consul general of France in Chicago in 2017, after diplomatic assignments to the Department of African and Indian Ocean Affairs in Paris, the French Embassy in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and the French Embassy in Washington, D.C. His talk at Elmhurst will focus on the concept of contemporary French identity and, more broadly, integration in and of Europe.

Federal court orders pension plan to restore more than $400,000 following investigation The U.S. Department of Labor has entered into an agreement with the fiduciaries of the Neuroscience Center LLC Defined Benefit Pension Plan to restore $419,758 to the Deerfield, Illinois-based retirement plan. The agreed-upon restoration is part of a consent judgment approved by the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois.

The action follows an investigation by the Department’s Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) that found violations of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) by fiduciary and sole trustee Steven R. Devore Best and the Neuroscience Center LLC. EBSA investigators found Best used monies from the plan for the Neuroscience Center LLC’s op-

By Roger Ruthhart Saukenuk was wellknown as one of the largest Native American villages in North America, but one of its residents, the warrior Black Hawk, was even better known.

Although born in Saukenuk, which was located where Rock Island stands today, his father Pyesa and mother Summer Rain and other relatives could trace their ancestry back thousands of years. According to their oral traditions, both the Sauk and Meskwaki tribes were living in Canada 12,000 years ago at the time of the last glacial retreat. Many centuries later they were displaced from their Canadian home by the Iroquois.

The Sauk and Meskwaki migrated through New England and New York to the area near Niagara Falls. By 1640, the Meskwaki had settled at the west end of Lake Erie, near present-day Detroit, and the Sauk near Saginaw Bay in Michigan.

In 1701, the decades-long war began between the French and the Meskwaki, which almost led to the tribe’s extinction. Weakened, they joined the Sauk and together they migrated to the Mississippi River, where for nearly 100 years the tribes lived in their own villages and farmed, hunted and traded.

The two tribes were separate nations. The Meskwaki were the smaller of the two, numbering about 1,600. In Rock Island, the Meskwaki had a village located across from Arsenal Island in what is now downtown Rock Island. In the days before the locks and dams, the river was 17 feet lower than today. Fort Armstrong loomed 30 feet above the river, according to Beth Carvey, retired historian at the Black Hawk State Historic Site.

Over the years, the Sauk had several cities called Saukenuk.

In 1808, the decision was made by the Sauk nation to consolidate smaller villages into the city now known as Saukenuk, located near the Rock River in Rock Island. Its location is near the Black Hawk State Historic Site, home to the John Hauberg Indian Museum which commemorates the lifestyle of those who lived at Saukenuk.

According to Ferrell Anderson, a local archaeologist, the Meskwaki village was made up of two rows of huts—about 30 total—located where downtown Rock Island is today.

Indian agent at Rock Island, wrote a report detailing the Indian villages within his jurisdiction.

Two miles up from the mouth of the Rock River was the “grand Sauk village where the principal chiefs, braves and warriors reside, ... and where all the affairs pertaining to the Sauk Nation of Indians were transacted,” Forsyth wrote. “Indeed, I have seen many Indian villages, but I never saw such a large one or such a populous one.”

Behind the town, on the side of the ridge, were the Sauk gardens which Black Hawk indicated extended about 2 miles. Forsyth estimated the Sauk had about 800 acres under cultivation.

Saukenuk had a north-south and an east-west esplanade that formed a “T.” The east-west road was defined by the river and the bluffs. It intersected with a longer north-south avenue that was lined with many lodges. At one end was a gathering area and the council lodge. We know there were as many as 100 or more lodges at one point, and Saukenuk was home to as many as 6,000 – perhaps more.

For most of the years that the Sauk and Meskwaki lived on these lands, their life was an idyllic one.

They lived peacefully in their villages with occasional skirmishes with other Indian tribes. They traded with the French and fought alongside the British, providing a lifestyle that was partially Indian and partially European.

The Sauk lived what might be described as an affluent lifestyle

by Indian standards. Many of the Sauk dressed in European clothes and hunted with rifles. When they did use arrows, they had metal tips, not stone. Their village on the shore of the Rock River was a thriving metropolis during the summer. In fall, crops from their farms were stored in food pits and they crossed the river and wintered in southern Iowa and Missouri – returning to Saukenuk in the spring.

Unknowingly, the end of this lifestyle had been assured in 1804 when a few chiefs — possibly plied with alcohol — signed a treaty in St. Louis in which they agreed to move west of the Mississippi River in exchange for $1,000 a year, at such time as settlers arrived seeking to live on the land.

In 1830 the Sauk and Fox were ordered to leave their villages in Illinois and move to Iowa. Black Hawk and others refused to accept the terms of the 1804 treaty that the Sauk and Meskwaki had not been involved with.

In the winter of 1830, the tribes left but faced a winter of near starvation. In spring 1831, Black Hawk defied the government order and returned to Saukenuk and planted crops.

The settlers who had now occupied the old village were alarmed. Illinois Gov. John Reynolds sent 1,500 men to move the tribes out. On June 20 the volunteer army moved on Saukenuk.

When the militia arrived at Saukenuk, they found fresh footprints and fires still burning.

The Sauk had left without a fight.

The militia burned the lodges, destroyed the crops and vandalized the main cemetery and dug up graves, according to a letter from the new Indian agent, Felix St. Vrain, to Indian superintendent William Clark.

Fearing he would be pursued, Black Hawk went to Fort Armstrong and sued for peace. He got it, under the terms that he would stay out of Illinois.

Peace lasted until the next winter when the Indians, unable to grow crops in the less tillable land, once again faced starvation. In 1832 the Indians again crossed into Illinois, marking the second year of the Black Hawk War. There were numerous skirmishes

and Black Hawk’s people, on the verge of starvation, fled into Wisconsin. They were finally trapped at Bad Axe Creek where they were slaughtered. Black Hawk and other leaders were captured and the militia killed old men, women and children, as well as 150 braves.

“When I call to mind the scenes of my youth and those of later days – and reflect that the theatre on which these were acted had been so long the home of my fathers, who now slept on the hills around it, I could not bring my mind to consent to leave this country … for any earthly consideration,” Black Hawk wrote in his autobiography.

IC Catholic Prep has shut out five of its 10 opponents this year and held six of the 10 to under 10 points. Offensively, IC Catholic Prep has scored 40 or more points in eight of its 10 contests. Stillman Valley, a town located off Illinois 72 west of the Hampshire-Elgin corridor, is a member of the Big Northern Conference, which now has a single-division format, meaning the Cardinals played nine conference games and finished tied for fourth place. The Cardinals, whose program has a history of postseason success, has played five playoff teams this year and has a 2-3 record. Both wins came against first-round opponent Dixon (Stillman Valley beat Dixon in the season opener). The other three games against winning-record foes were losses to Byron (41-14), North Boone (35-34) and Genoa-Kingston (34-6). Byron, just up the road west of Stillman Valley on Illinois 72, won the BNC title. All three of those teams (Byron, Genoa and North Boone) still are alive in the Class 3A and 4A playoffs. Genoa is alive in the bottom half of the Class 4A bracket.

Up next: The winner of this contest faces either No. 4 seed Chicago Urban Prep/Bronzeville (9-1) or No. 5 seed Marengo (8-2) in the state quarterfinals. If IC Catholic Prep wins on the road this week, it would host the quarterfinal game in Elmhurst based on Bronzeville having hosted two games already and Marengo and IC Catholic Prep having each hosted a game. IC Catholic Prep would win that tiebreaker based on being the No. 1 seed compared to Marengo’s No. 5 seed.

Timothy Christian girls volleyball team loses to Trinity in regional final Trojans finish with 20plus wins once again

While the Timothy Christian girls volleyball team lost to Trinity out of River Forest in the Class 3A Timothy Christian regional final, Trojans’ coach Scott Piersma said his team’s overall body of work wins out the day.

“We did some good stuff at the end of the year and we did some good stuff all year,” said Piersma. “The season didn’t end like we wanted it to.”

The Trojans lost 25-13, 25-13 to Trinity.

“They beat us pretty handily,” said Piersma. “It was not our best effort unfortunately. The better team won that night. They were certainly better than us, but I’m not sure they were

better than us overall. They took advantage the whole time. We had heard about them a little bit, but we felt like we were prepared. We knew they had a couple of good outside hitters and we knew they liked to run their middles. They controlled the match from the beginning.”

Timothy defeated Chicago Roosevelt in the regional semifinals.

“All our girls got to play, which is nice to see in the state tournament,” said Piersma.

Timothy finished the season 26-9 overall.

“We still did great,” said Piersma.

“Anytime you can cross 20 wins or 25 wins, that’s really good. Unfortunately, we didn’t end on the best note, but we can’t let that get in the way. We played Rosary on senior night and it was 32-30 in the third set. We lost to Chicago Christian in three sets with their Division I out-

IC Catholic Prep girls cross country team headed to state Calcagno wins individual sectional championship

The Knights took second at the recent Class 1A Lisle sectional and earned the program’s first-ever state finals berth. IC Catholic Prep will run in the Class 1A state finals Satgirls urday in Peoria.

Freshman Kennedy Calcagno won the individual sectional title with a time of 19:18. Beecher senior Hailey Janssen was second in 19:21.

Calcagno, Manchester and Chaidez are products of Visitation Catholic School, while Guinan, Johnson, O’Brien and Cooke are alums of IC Grade School.

IC Catholic Prep started it season winning the Westmont triangular with Chaidez, Calcagno and Manchester finishing 1-2-3. The Knights also won their own Knight invitational for the first time in team history, placing five runners in the top 10.

The Knights then won the St. Francis invitational as well as the Harvest Christian Academy invitational.

“We have a great group of women who are totally committed to selfless running,” coach Dawn Calcagno said. “Our group of ladies is comprised of students who matriculated from Visitation and IC Grade School, and because of the storied running tradition in Elmhurst, they bring a tremendous legacy to our team.”

Calcagno noted many of her runners fully committed to training during the summer at CK Running Camp (York boys’ coach Charlie Kern’s camp) “and that dedication has proven vital to the team’s sea-

son,” she said.

“Our program is centered around developing powerful women who are dedicated to a common goal— team success. We really don’t know what the future has in store for our team, but we are committed to making the community, town and school proud.”

The Knights also took seventh out of 33 teams at the Peoria invitational, which combined Class 1A and 2A schools into one race. IC Catholic Prep was the top-finishing Class 1A team.

“For our girls it was an invaluable experience running on the state course,” said Calcagno. “All our girls had personal records and season personal records.”

IC Catholic Prep then won the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division title with 18 points, meaning the Knights had five of the seven top place-finishers in the meet.

Manchester won the conference title in 18:23, followed by Calcagno in second, Chaidez in fourth, Guinan in sixth and Johnson in seventh. All five girls earned all-conference honors.

The Knights also scored 18 points en route to the regional title. Calcagno was the regional champion with a time of 19:36. Manchester took second, while Chaidez was fourth, Guinan fifth and Johnson sixth. O’Brien was 24th and Cook was 25th.

“The girls are continuing to demonstrate their high work ethic, running for each other,” said Dawn Calcagno.

The IC Catholic Prep girls cross-country team won the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division title and had five runners earn all-conference honors. Freshman Carly Manchester won the MSC Red individual title.

IC Catholic Prep senior girls soccer standout Olivia Hurt will continue her soccer career at North Central College in Naperville. Hurt heads into her senior season this coming spring with 82 career varsity goals and has a solid shot at hitting the 100-goal barrier for her four-year career.

Hurt recently announced she will continue her soccer career at North Central College in Naperville.

“It felt like it was the perfect fit academically and athletically,” she said. “They have good educational programs, a good soccer coach and a good team. I knew it would be a good place to go.”

Hurt recently made an official visit to the school and came away impressed. “I just went on my overnight and it was so fun,” she said. “I love the team atmosphere.”

Hurt was recruited to play center midfield for North Central.

She’s not quite sure on field of study just yet, but mentioned marketing or graphic design as two possibilities.

“This means a lot,” said Hurt of getting the opportunity to play collegiate soccer. “I put in a lot of hard work in club and high school. Everything paid off and now I get to play at North Central and it’s close to home, which is really nice.”

Kern’s effort helped the Dukes finish third at the sectional and earn yet another berth as a team in Saturday’s Class 3A boys state finals in Peoria.

Hurt, who is on the high honor roll at IC Catholic Prep and received a presidential scholarship from North Central, plays club soccer for Team Elmhurst. She’s been with the club for 10 years, starting back in elementary school.

“I’ve always loved soccer since I was little,” she said. “I love the energy out there and I love being part of a team. All the teams I’ve been on have been very helpful. I just love it.”

Playing college sports is nothing new in the Hurt family. Older sister, Maddie, plays golf at Division I Northern Illinois University and won a Class 1A state title while at IC Catholic Prep.

“Maddie has helped me a lot,” said Hurt. “She’s talked me through everything with all the work she’s put in.

She tells me about all the work I need to do. It’s good to have that kind of a

role model in my life.”

Hurt’s mother, Julie, and her three sisters played tennis at IC Catholic Prep and collegiately at De Paul. Julie Hurt (nee Falduto) is in the IC Catholic Prep athletic hall of fame and is the school’s current varsity girls tennis coach.

“It’s really fun seeing my mom’s name on the wall,” said Hurt. “Now me and my sisters can carry on the legacy.”

Hurt also plays on the IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team as a defensive specialist with younger sister, Sophie, who is a sophomore setter on the varsity team. They are part of a Knights team that recently won a regional title.

“Sophie is very good at volleyball,” said Olivia Hurt.

Hurt said getting her college deci-

sion cemented now is a big relief. “I can focus on finishing my senior year,” she said. “I look forward to my last high school season. It is going to be fun.”

Overall, Hurt has thoroughly enjoyed her time at IC Catholic Prep.

“It’s been a really good experience,” she said. “All the teachers have been super helpful and all the coaches I’ve had have been big supporters of me and my teammates. It’s been a very positive experience.”

Hurt goes into her senior season at IC Catholic Prep this coming spring having scored 82 career varsity goals and should have a strong shot at hitting the 100-goal barrier for her four-year varsity career. She had 23 goals as a freshman, 28 as a sophomore and exploded for 31 goals and 27 assists last year as a junior.

York girls swimmers compete at West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet

Both levels of the York girls swimming program were in action this past weekend at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet.

York took sixth at the varsity level with 110 points and also was sixth at the frosh-soph level with 97 points.

In diving, Leah Simonds was seventh for York at the frosh-soph level with 226.55 points. Birgette Kammerdiener took sixth at the varsity level with 351.40 points.

York was sixth in the 200 medley relay at the frosh-soph level with a time of 2:03.38 with Claire Pfaff, Gabrielle Honken, Madison Sardo and Julia Beltran.

York was fifth in the 200 medley relay at the varsity level with Amanda Polach, Nicole Bednarik, Nicole Demare and Delaney Tase swimming 1:56.14.

Grace Walker was 11th in the 200 frosh-soph race with a time of 2:11.11.

Polach was 11th in the 200 at the varisty level with a time of 2:01.97.

Honken was eighth in the 200 IM frosh-soph race with a time of 2:27.66.

Demare was ninth in the 200 varsity race in 2:25.31.

Beltran was 10th in the frosh-soph 50 with a time of 26.75. Bednarik was ninth in the varsity 50 free race in 25.80.

Alyssa Rivera finished 11th in the 100 butterfly at the frosh-soph level

with a time of 1:16.06. Demare was 10th in the butterfly varsity race in 1:05.22.

Walker was ninth in the 100 frosh-soph with a time of 59.18. Samantha Harrington was 10th in the 100 varsity race in 58.05.

Beltran took 11th in the 500 at the frosh-soph level with a time of 6:01.99.

Tase was 10th in the 500 varsity race in 5:42.47.

York was sixth in the 200 frosh-soph relay in 1:47.98 with Walker, Sardo, Pfaff and Beltran. York took sixth in the 200 varsity relay in 1:44.17 with Polach, Demare, Tase and Bednarik.

Sophia Locascio was 11th in the 100 frosh-soph backstroke in 1:11.88. Polach was seventh in the varsity backstroke in 1:02.88, while Harrington was eighth in 1:03.67.

Honken was ninth in the 100 breaststroke at the frosh-soph level with a time of 1:16.88.

Bednarik was ninth in the 100 breaststroke at the varsity level with a time of 1:12.48.

York was sixth in the 400 frosh-soph relay in a time of 4:12.23 with Rivera, Walker, Locascio and Honken. The Dukes also were sixth at the varsity level in the 400 relay with a time of 4:04.10 with Gabi Knott, Kate Caforio, Harrington and Emma Radcliff.

York returns to action next week on Saturday, Nov. 10 at the Downers Grove North sectional where berths in the state meet will be on the line.

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team wins regional title Third crown in the last five seasons for Knights

IC Catholic Prep added to its girls volleyball hardware haul with a recent 25-19, 25-13 win over Elgin St. Edward in the championship match of the Class 2A Willows Academy regional.

The win gave the Knights a third regional title in the last five years under coach Nancy D’Amore.

IC Catholic Prep opened play ear-

lier this week in the Class 2A Guerin Prep sectional.

“Our mindset going into the regional final was different,” said D’Amore. “In the semifinal we were shaky. We shook off the nerves and took care of things in the regional final. We did a good job moving the ball around. Our team play was strong. Everybody came in and did their job and that always helps.”

Outside hitters Maya Stovall and Jess Sobon starred against St. Edward. Each had eight kills. “They did very well,” said D’Amore. “We had a balanced attack.”

The Knights also excelled on defense led by libero Bella Leslie. “Our

back-row defense was strong as usual,” said D’Amore.

D’Amore also applauded the efforts of setter Sophie Hurt. “Sophie had a nice game,” she said. “She executed the game plan very well.”

D’Amore said a strong schedule at the end of the regular season greatly aided her team. “The nice thing going into the tail-end of the season is with the new conference structure we played all our divisional matches at the end of the season,” she said.

“We had six or seven right in a row, going twice a week. We have some tough teams in our conference with St. Francis and Rosary. There are no give-me matches in our conference

at all. These all are strong teams. We had no choice but to play well. That built them up from playing that type of competition. We definitely are in the spot we want to be right now.”

IC Catholic Prep played Chicago Holy Trinity earlier this week and would play either Elgin Harvest Christian Academy or Chicago DePaul Prep for the sectional title if it defeated Holy Trinity.

“I feel good about our team,” said D’Amore late last week. “If we play to what we are capable of and how we have played at times during the season, we are a tough team to beat.

With the playoffs, a lot of it is bringing the physical and mental part of

it. I think it comes down to how the team responds best in the mental game. From a physical standpoint we definitely are ready. We have a lot of weapons and we are playing great defense and passing at the highest level. We feel good in all areas.”

Beyond the on-the-court success, D’Amore said team chemistry has been off the charts this season. “It’s a good group that gets along really well,” she said. “They are great kids. It’s been an enjoyable year as a coach.”

IC Catholic Prep finished tied for third in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division during the regular season.

Timothy Christian’s Clark and Fincher headed to state cross-country meet Boys team places four on all-conference list; Clark and Terpstra earn honors for girls

The Timothy Christian boys and girls cross-country teams will have a presence in Peoria Saturday.

Both Hope Clark from the girls team and Clint Fincher from the boys team qualified for the Class 1A state finals in their respective divi-

sions.

Clark took ninth at the Class 1A Lisle sectional to earn an individual qualifying spot in the girls’ state finals. Clark covered the course in 20-minutes flat.

Timothy’s girls cross-country team took seventh at the Lisle sectional with 198 points. Elise Terpstra was 28th with a time of 21:30.

Jill Forgac took 48th with a time of 22:58. Grace Lindemulder was 68th with a time of 23:35. Paige Hoving took 70th with a time of 23:44, while Tegan Gunn placed 72nd with a time of 23:59. Morgan Hoving was 82nd

in 24:39.

In the boys race at Lisle, Fincher qualified after placing 15th with a time of 17:14. Caleb Mitchell was Timothy’s next finisher in 47th place at 18:19. Alex Oldenburger was 62nd with a time of 18:51. Noah Bezanson took 67th with a time of 18:55.

Tristan Iwema was 113th with a time of 20:34. Richard Africa took 130th with a time of 21:55 and Noah Smith was 131st with a time of 22:07.

Earlier, both teams competed in the Metro Suburban Conference meets.

On the boys’ side, Fincher won

the MSC title for a second year in a row. Fincher finished with a time of 16:32.9.

Mitchell, a junior, took third with a time of 17:03.9. Oldenburger was sixth with a time of 17:38.3 and Bezanson was ninth with a time of 18:01.3. Fincher, Mitchell, Oldenberger and Bezanson earned allMSC honors.

Peter Peng, a senior, took 21st with a time of 19:28.4, while Iwema was 22nd in 19:36.7. Africa was 29th with a time of 20:42.8.

Timothy won the Red Division title by a single point over Chicago

Christian, 38-39. Timothy’s scores went 1-3-6-9-19, while Chicago Christian went 2-5-7-12-13.

In the girls’ race at Elmwood Park, Clark was third behind a pair of IC Catholic Prep runners and finished in 19:13.6. Terpstra was eighth in 20:14.6, while Hoving ran 21:22.2 and Gunn was 15th in 21:51.3. Forgac was 17th in 22:08.8. Hoving was 18th in 22:38.5 and Olivia Reamer was 19th in 23:34.6.

Clark and Terpstra were named to the all-conference team.

Timothy took second in the Red Division with 47 points.
