Find over 34,000 grams of product, a handgun; three arrested

According to the Elmhurst Police reports, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, officers served a search warrant at a business whose sign currently says its name is “BDI Brands, LLC,” located at 231 West Wrightwood, regarding its alleged operation as an unlicensed recreational cannabis dispensary. During the course of the investigation, police said that the business allegedly sold cannabis to walk-in customers as well as a minor.

Approximately 31,000 grams of edible cannabis, 3,000 grams of cannabis flower, 460 grams of cannabis concentrate and a loaded handgun were recovered in the drug investigation, police said. Two business operators and one employee were taken into custody.

Arrested was Shiquita Lacy, 24, of Lisle, who allegedly was found to be in possession of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as ecstasy (E) or molly. Lacy was charged with delivery of cannabis and possession of controlled substance. Also arrested were Melichsia Boss-Woodard, 48, and Melvin Woodard, 37, both of Roselle, who were charged with felony possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and armed violence.

Chapelle began working at Pedersen Ryberg in 1987 and became very involved. He recently went to work

at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, but after a change in ownership, Chapelle returned to Pedersen Ryberg in April. He is happy to be back, he said, and to be reunited with the Bob Chapelle community built around Pedersen Ryberg.

The Elmhurst community began to flock to Chapelle for his services after seeing how dedicated he was.

Chapelle’s deep desire to become a funeral director seemed straightfor-

ward, at least to him.

“My parents would always ask, ‘Isn’t there something else you want to do?’” he said with a laugh.

But Chapelle would not change his mind. He viewed funeral directors as classy and dignified, and said he wanted to be like them. Working at a funeral home during high school, Chapelle began learning about the trade.

“I was very interested in the art of embalming,” he said. “I saw the value in restoring people.”

As a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), Elmhurst resident Terry Hennen has gone to Washington D.C. five times to advocate for cancer patients. In past years he joined 600+ other delegates from around the country to meet with senators and congressmen in person. COVID-19, however, made this year a little different. Instead of the usual three-day schedule of presentations, training and “meetings on the Hill,” everything was done virtually.

“I really missed the social interaction,” said Hennen, “but we accomplished our mission to directly ask our legislators to support specific legislation that helps in the fight against cancer.”

This year’s first request was for increased funding for cancer research and prevention programs with $44.7 billion (a $3 billion increase) for the

National Institutes of Health, including $6.9 billion specifically for the National Cancer Institute. While COVID-19 has drawn everyone’s attention, cancer can’t be forgotten as it is the nation’s second-leading cause of death. This year 1.8 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer, and more than 600,000 will die.

The second request made by the ACS CAN delegates was for support of the Henrietta Lacks Cancer Research Enhancement Act. Cancer research generates cutting-edge treatments that are used to improve survival and quality of life for cancer patients. The clinical trials used to test these treatments are sometimes the last hope for cancer patients who have tried everything else. Ethnic minorities, older Americans, rural Americans, and poorer Americans are among the groups that are under-represented in cancer clinical trials. This legislation was written to help improve that shortcoming.

Hennen noted that in his past trips to Washington with ACS CAN, an effective highlight was the luminaria display and ceremony that took place on the final evening of the conference.

Hennen displayed 100 luminaria bags and had a local bagpiper Brian Costello join him at dusk to play Amazing Grace.

“While I missed the grandeur of the Lincoln Memorial, we got a lot of attention in the neighborhood as people walked by and asked what it was all about,” he said. “That was a win.

I can’t wait to get back to normal, but until then we will just have to keep finding creative ways to keep the ball rolling.”

Scott Levin announces candidacy for Mayor of Elmhurst

After representing the 5th Ward on the Elmhurst City Council since 2010, Scott Levin has announced his intentions to run for mayor in the April 2021 Consolidated Election.

“Elmhurst is a wonderful city that has a great heritage,” said Levin. “I believe that my qualifications, experience and personal attributes make me the best candidate to be the next mayor of this great city.”

Levin noted that “the change in City leadership comes at a time of great uncertainty as our country deals with the pandemic and social justice concerns.”

“I am prepared to lead the City Council, City staff, businesses and residents through some very difficult decisions,” he said. “I know that we must protect our community and our property values.

“My interest in local government, my sense of justice and fairness, my leadership in every organization I join, and my ability to work well with people, including those who hold differing views, are all important. “I have

been talking to residents and business owners and I have heard and share their concerns. I will be independent, but I will work together with everyone for the good of the community.

Above all, those who know me know that my integrity is beyond reproach.”

A litigation and business practice attorney for more than 35 years, Levin is a partner with Howard & Howard Attorneys PLLC in Chicago. He has been recognized by his peers and selected as an Illinois Super Lawyer® (2005-2020) and an Illinois Leading Lawyer® (2010-2020).

After earning a degree in business administration and a master’s in public administration, Levin was selected for an Illinois Governor’s Internship and stayed with the State of Illinois for nine years, serving as deputy executive director of the Illinois Criminal Justice Authority.

During the recession of 2009, Levin co-chaired the 24-member Mayor’s Finance Task Force, which was created to address the $6 million deficit and was the lead author of the Task Force’s report.

Since becoming an alderman in

president of the Chiefs Hockey Club, board member of the Blues Hockey Club, member of the Focus 205 Community Engagement facilitating team, committee chair of several PTA committees and chief of his son’s YMCA Guides group. Levin also has volunteered his legal services to the Special Kids Day, Life Education Center and York Hockey Club organizations in Elmhurst.

Levin said he “would bring all of his City Council, professional and community experience to the mayor’s office, along with a strong commitment to serving with energy and integrity.”

COVID-19 updates for DuPage County As of 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, there were 18,253 total cases among DuPage County residents, including 567 deaths. Since Monday, there were 79 new cases and two deaths related to COVID-19 reported, a male in his 70s and a female in her 80s.

Jan Edgley said Chapelle is known for his attention to detail.

“He is a perfectionist,” she said.

“The way a person looks when a family views them is so important to him.

The family comes first.”

After getting the basics down, Chapelle went to mortuary school. There, he said he was exposed to many different faith backgrounds, giving him a different perspective on funerals.

Growing up in the Catholic Church, funerals were always the same to Chapelle.

“I learned funerals can be rituals, or just sharing stories of people’s lives,” he said. “It’s about reminiscing, remembering people, and how to give comfort to a family.”

Once at Pedersen Ryberg, Chapelle said he learned much more than how to direct a funeral. He was able to do things his own way and support families emotionally. After his own dad passed away, Chapelle said he was truly able to be empathetic towards the families he helped.

“You have to walk them through this grief path,” he said. “Funerals don’t cure anything, but they help us get to that next step of grieving.”

Chapelle’s delicacy with customers is what makes him so great at his job, longtime friend Bonita Falco said.

“At your lowest point in life, he makes you feel like he’s got everything handled,” Falco said. “I’ve never met someone who goes so above and beyond.”

However, this dedication can take its toll.

“It’s demanding,” Chapelle said.

“It can take away from my family life. I’ve given up a lot of things, like family holidays.”

The most difficult aspect of the job, Chapelle said, is being up all night.

The funeral home is open 24 hours a day and it’s difficult to take time off.

Pedersen Ryberg directs around 250 funerals a year.

Chapelle said that surprisingly, his job doesn’t get him down.

“Death should be teaching us how to live,” he said.

Being a funeral director has shaped so much of Chapelle’s life. He said he never realized what an impact he had on his clients.

“It’s given me a real sense of satisfaction helping somebody go through probably the worst part of their life,” he said. “It’s a privilege to be at that moment with them. And it’s a rewarding profession in that regard.”

Falco said Chapelle’s kindness is not limited to the workplace.

“He puts you at ease and acts like you’re the only person on Earth,” she said. “He is absolutely my go-to person.”

Recently, Chapelle said Pedersen Ryberg has struggled to push through COVID-19. No food or drinks are allowed at funerals, and there is a limited capacity on the number of people who can attend. The funeral home has done live streaming to allow more people to be included in ceremonies.

“We’ve had to reinvent how to do something meaningful,” Chapelle said.

City issues Trick-or-Treating guidelines and safety precautions The City of Elmhurst has received several inquiries regarding trickor-treating during the COVID-19 pandemic. The City’s top priority is the safety of residents. There is a heightened sense of precaution that the community should take during this holiday. We understand that not everyone may feel comfortable trickor-treating this year. Ultimately, each resident must make the decision on whether or not to partake in Halloween activities. Trick-or-treating hours on Saturday, October 31stare from 3:30-7:30 pm, but residents are asked to protect themselves and respect their neighbors by understanding and abiding by the following guidelines: • The City has designed GREEN and RED signs for residents to place in their windows or visible areas for trick-or-treaters to identify whether they are participating. GREEN = Yes, trick-or treaters are welcome.

RED = NO trick-or-treaters please.

These signs will be mailed to each resident in mid-October.

• Residents interested in participating in trick-or-treating are asked to turn their outdoor lights on and place the GREEN “Trick-or-Treaters Welcome” sign so that it is visible to trick-or-treaters. Residents who would not like to participate are asked to keep their outdoor lights off and place the RED “NO trick-

or-treaters, please” sign so that it is visible to trick-or-treaters. Please treat all neighbors with respect and courtesy by not approaching homes that have indicated that they are not participating.

• For the safety of all participants, those going door-to-door are required to wear face coverings at all times.

The CDC has stated that a Halloween costume mask is not a substitute for a cloth mask or face covering that covers your mouth and nose. Please maintain a safe distance from other trick-or-treaters and wait to approach a home until the previous groups has left.

• Individuals who are passing out candy are asked to wear face coverings and gloves, and pass candy out individually instead of inviting participants to take a treat from a communal bowl. Please wash your hands frequently and disinfect high touched surfaces such as doorbells, doorknobs and buzzers.

• Please act kindly and courteously to keep your neighbors safe and respect their choices as we maneuver through the challenges of this pandemic.

Other Halloween Trick-orTreating Safety Precautions: • It is recommended that young children end trick-or-treating when it begins to get dark.

• Put reflective tape on costumes and avoid costumes that are overly scary or that require “weapons” of any kind.

• If older children are going trickor-treating without you, create a map of a safe trick-or-treating route in familiar areas. Agree on a specific time they should be home as well as preset check in times.

• Remind children not to go inside anyone’s home or accept a ride from anyone, including people you know, without checking first with a trusted adult.

• Remind children to look both ways before crossing the street and to cross at corners only. Use sidewalks, not the street, for walking. Never run between parked vehicles.

• Warn children not to eat any treats until you’ve had a chance to inspect them. When in doubt, throw it out.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims.

Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Sept. 25 A victim in the 400 block of Walnut told police at around 10:47 p.m. that recently he found damage to his garage door. He subsequently installed a surveillance camera at the front of the residence. On the above date, his video showed three teenagers running up the driveway and slamming their shoulders into the victim’s garage door. The three suspects were located, and juvenile disposition is pending.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, damage to property, disturbance Sept. 29 A complainant in the 800 block of S. Poplar told police at around 11:54 a.m. that she was involved in an argument with the suspect which turned physical when the suspect grabbed her arms and shook her. The reporting officer spoke with the suspect who denied ever touching the complainant. There were no signs of any physical injuries and the suspect left the residence.

Sept. 27 A reporting officer met with a complainant in the 500 block of S. York who stated he was involved in a verbal argument with a suspect after he was refused service for not wearing a mask.

The complainant stated the suspect threatened to harm him before getting into a black Kia Optima and leaving the scene. The suspect stated he argued with the complainant but denied threatening to harm him. Due to conflicting statements, no further action was taken.

Sept. 25 Edward A. Berg, 58, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of open liquor on public property near Swain and the Prairie Path at around 12:48 p.m.

A 34-year-old Elmhurst man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 900 block of N. York at around 7:34 p.m. According to police, Victim #1 related that subsequent to a verbal argument, the intoxicated suspect choked him and struck Victim #2 on top of the head.

There were no signs of injury to the victims. Police said the suspect admitted to pushing one of the victims during the argument.

Sept. 24 A 29-year-old Chicago man was charged with two counts of domestic battery in the 300 block of N. Route 83 at around 4:48 p.m. A victim told police that subsequent to an argument on Sept. 23, the suspect had struck her. An officer observed that the victim had a bloodshot and bruised left eye, a scratch beneath the eye and bruises on her forearms.

DUI, DUI-drugs, possession of alcohol in public Sept. 29 James Humphries, 22, of Berkeley, was

charged with DUI, illegal transportation of open alcohol, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near S. Bryan and W. Butterfield at around 9 p.m.

Sept. 27 Charles Rogers, 29, of Rockford, was charged with DUI, unlawful possession of adult-use cannabis in a vehicle, improper lane usage and driving on the wrong side of the roadway subsequent to a single-vehicle crash near Lake and Walnut at around 10:45 p.m.

Fleeing, eluding Sept. 28 Police said officers were alerted to a robbery that occurred in Villa Park with four suspects leaving in a black Audi towards Lake Street at around 11:50 a.m. The reporting officer located the vehicle at the above intersection and attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspected vehicle fled from officers at a high rate of speed and was last seen headed northbound on York and eventually driving onto I-290.

Sept. 26 Police said officer responded to the 400 block of E. May at around 11:43 a.m. to assist the Illinois State Police with a search of four suspects that fled the scene of a property damage accident. All four suspects were seen running westbound from the May Street area.

Officers apprehended one suspect and turned him over to the Illinois State Police.

Police said that at around 10:15 p.m., a reporting officer near Route 83 and Fay attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a multi-colored, newer model sport-style motorcycle with no license plate. The driver accelerated from the right lane and fled from the officer. The unknown suspect had a black full-face helmet with a white insignia on the back and was wearing a black sweatshirt also with a white insignia on the back.

Harassment, threats Sept. 29 A complainant told police at around 6:04 p.m. that her daughter was having issues with her friends who were sending her inappropriate text messages. The reporting officer contacted the other girls and requested they stop sending messages to the victim.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance Sept. 30 Irvin Valdez, 23, of Melrose Park, was issued citations for possession of cannabis by a driver, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Addison at around 7:27 p.m.

Sept. 25 David S. Alcala, 64, of Chicago, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, driving while license suspended, no seat belt and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Ferndale at around 12:05 p.m. Police said a search of Alcala yielded a folded-up bill containing suspected cocaine. According to police, Alcala also had an active warrant from the Wheeling Police Department.

Julianne Czubek, 30, of Palatine, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a hypodermic needle and

possession of drug paraphernalia in the 600 block of W. North at around 9:35 p.m. Police said officers and medics responded to the above location for the report of a drug overdose. According to police, Czubek related she was attempting to consume heroin, but was not experiencing an overdose and signed a refusal for treatment.

Juan C. Rodriguez, 37, of Cicero, was issued citations for unlawful possession of adult use cannabis in a vehicle and no seat belt subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Villa at around 9:43 p.m.

Sept. 24 Sergio L. Saucedo, 32, of Franklin Park, was issued citations for possession of adult use cannabis in a vehicle and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near St. Charles and Villa at around 12:28 p.m.

York told police at around 4:27 p.m., an unknown suspect entered his enclosed front porch earlier in the afternoon and began playing with some of his child’s toys. When confronted, the suspect asked if the residence was holding an art class before leaving.

Theft/burglary/ attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/ fraud/forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/ robbery Sept. 30 Deceptive practice was reported at a vehicle service business in the 500 block of W. North at around 10:12 a.m. A complainant told police that a suspect dropped off her vehicle for an engine replacement. The suspect provided a cashier’s check and was given a loaner vehicle for 13 days. The complainant later learned the cashier’s check bounced due to the account being closed. The complainant spoke with the suspect who stated she was currently unable to pay for the repairs. This case is pending investigation.

Deceptive practice was reported in the 900 block of Hillcrest at around 2:10 p.m. A victim told police that he was having issues with his online bank account so he attempted to contact customer service. The victim stated he spoke with a subject who identified himself as a bank employee and provided him with his debit card information. The victim later realized he misdialed the phone number and the person he spoke with was not a bank employee. The victim contacted his bank and placed a hold on his account. No money was lost.

Sept. 29 A reporting officer met with employees at a restaurant in the 900 block of N. York who stated they opened the front door and heard the safe alarm going off. They observed broken glass from the drive-through window and saw the safe had been cut open. Responding officers were able to view the surveillance video and observed two suspects break the drive-through window and crawl across the floor to the office. Suspect 1 was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, a white mask and blue sweatpants.

Suspect 2 was wearing a black jacket, green sweatpants with a white mask. Both were wearing gloves and they had one backpack.

This case is pending investigation.

Sept. 27-Sept. 28 Theft was reported at a car dealership in the 700 block of Industrial Drive. Police said an unknown suspect took the rear tires and rims from two of their vehicles while they were parked in their lot sometime between the above dates.

Sept. 24-Sept. 25 Theft was reported in the 800 block of Howard. A victim told police that the property is under construction and an unknown suspect(s) stole two unsecured ladders from the rear of the property sometime between the above dates.

Sept. 20 A complainant in the 400 block of N. Larch told police at around 6:31 p.m. that he left a camera in the back seat of a ride share vehicle.

The complainant contacted the driver who denied taking the camera but stated he does not check his vehicle after every ride and had approximately 10 other Uber customers after the complainant.

Sept. 2 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of S. Kenmore at around 11:52 a.m. A victim told police he received a letter from Illinois Department of Employment Security stating they had received his request for unemployment benefits, which he had not applied for.

The victim will report the issue to IDES. Nov. 18, 2019-April 18 Fraud was reported in the 400 block of S. Parkview between the above dates. A victim told police that he discovered several unauthorized charges on his credit card. The victim reviewed statements which showed several charges since November of 2019.

Car engulfed in flames leads to arson investigation On Sept. 24, police said that subsequent to a call for a vehicle fire at Elm Lawn Cemetery in the 400 block of E. Lake at around 12:49 a.m., a vehicle was found to be fully engulfed in flames and appeared to have been burning for a while. The owner of the vehicle was contacted and related she noticed the vehicle missing at approximately 12:30 a.m., but did not report it stolen to Melrose Park Police Department, where she lived. The keys were in the vehicle and it was left unlocked. Melrose Park police responded to the victim’s residence and initiated a vehicle theft report.

Youth charged with battery after alleged altercation at skatepark On Sept. 30, while at the skate park in the 600 block of S. York at around 4:21 p.m., a juvenile suspect reportedly became aggressive towards a victim, taking candy out of his backpack and passing it out to his friends. When the victim attempted to retrieve his backpack from the suspect, the suspect threw the victim to the ground, causing injury. The suspect was cited for battery and released to his parents.

Hacker enters 7th grade zoom meeting, types vulgar statement On Sept. 23, a reporting officer met with the principal of a school in the 100 block of W. Butterfield who stated during a seventh-grade gym class Zoom meeting, there was an unknown suspect who gained access into the meeting and typed a vulgar statement. This case is pending investigation.

Raja provides update on COVID-19 stimulus package I know many of you are eager to learn more about the status of the next COVID-19 stimulus package.

While negotiations are continuing, this week I voted for the revised version of the bipartisan HEROES Act, which would provide muchneeded aid to American families, businesses, workers, and schools.

For example, the bill will provide: • Support for small businesses, through improving the Paycheck Protection Program for the smallest businesses and struggling non-profits while providing hardhit businesses with second loans as well as targeted assistance for the struggling restaurant industry and independent live venue operators.

• Aid for airline industry workers, through extending the Payroll Support Program to keep airline industry workers paid.

• $225 billion in additional funds to bolster education and childcare, including $182 billion for K-12 schools, nearly $39 billion for postsecondary education, and $57 billion to support childcare for families.

Additionally, this new legislation will: • Provide $436 billion for one year’s worth of assistance to state and local governments, which need this funding to pay essential workers like first responders and health workers who keep us safe and are in danger of losing their jobs.

• Commit $75 billion to support testing, tracing, and treatment of COVID with special attention to the disparities facing communities of color to ensure that every American can access free coronavirus treatment and supporting hospitals and providers.

Our bill would also commit $28 billion to the procurement, distribution, and education campaigns for a safe and effective vaccine.

• Provide additional direct payments of $1,200 per taxpayer and $500 per dependent, cushioning the economic blow of the coronavirus crisis.

• Protect payrolls, through enhancing the new employee retention tax credit that encourages employers to keep workers on their payrolls.

• Preserve health coverage,

protecting Americans losing their employer-provided health insurance by making unemployed Americans automatically receive the maximum ACA subsidy on the exchanges, as well as a special enrollment period in the ACA exchanges for uninsured Americans.

• Restore unemployment benefits, ensuring weekly supplemental $600 federal unemployment payments through next January and preventing unemployed workers from exhausting their eligibility, providing a vital safety net for the record number of Americans who are unemployed, including those connected to the gig-economy.

• Safeguard our democracy, with new resources to ensure safe elections, an accurate Census, and preserve the Postal Service.

It is long past time for another stimulus bill that will protect those fighting on the front lines, as well as help put an end to this pandemic and stimulate the economy by putting money in the pockets of the American people. Now, I hope the Senate will take up this legislation quickly.

Mazzochi issues statement on Special Investigating Committee Hearing

State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst), who serves on the Special Investigative Committee of Michael J. Madigan, issued the following statement after the conclusion of the hearing that took place on Tuesday, Sept.

29: “The people of Illinois took a big step closer to the truth today.

“At the hearing, ComEd admitted critical facts in the Deferred Prosecution Agreement that evidence breathtaking public corruption involving the Speaker and his associates. The witness for ComEd confirmed ComEd’s money went to Mike Madigan’s top precinct captain, and that they could not document any work he did for ComEd. “They also confirmed that their money went to Frank Olivo, and they could not document the work that he did for ComEd. Olivo is believed to be a former Alderman for Madigan’s 13th Ward.

“They admitted that ComEd employees agreed to let Mike Madigan tell former Chicago Alderman Mike Zalewski Senior he was getting $5000 a month of ComEd funds. ComEd identified Victor Reyes, a Daley patronage chief, as the lawyer who was ‘so valuable’ to Madigan that if ComEd’s CEO didn’t get involved to ‘resolve’ getting him paid, ‘Our Friend’ Madigan ‘will call me [Mike McClain], and then I will call you.’

“Is this a drill we must go through?

“ComEd also acknowledged that there is documentation we don’t yet have directly evidencing that Mike Madigan had knowledge of the effort to get Juan Ochoa on the ComEd board, which the Deferred Prosecution Agreement describes in detail.

“ComEd repeatedly admitted that all of this was done with the intent to influence and reward Speaker Madigan.”

Mazzochi reiterated that “if the members of this Committee want sunshine and transparency, as I do, then the next step is to exercise the committee’s power to subpoena witnesses. That the Chairman refused a vote on this today only delays the process of getting to the facts. Are we an investigating committee or not?”

Reader: Why are we still paying rent to house D205 transition students?

On Aug. 31, I submitted a FOIA request to [School District] 205 asking about any progress being made to find a permanent home for these adult students.

If you remember the property we purchased at 162 South York was to house both the [administration] and these students. Their response was that these students were still being educated at a rental property located at 378 N. York St. On Sept. 24, the Board of Education (BOE) was informed

by Mr. Moyer that the Elmhurst Park

District Board had authorized formal conversations to negotiate a price for the purchase of The Abbey property. I then contacted Mr. Whelton and asked him to research three things before he began these talks.

First, how much money did the Park District pay for Berens Park which was District 205 property? Second, how much were the lots on Walnut that were part of the park sold for? Finally, how much does the Park District want for The Abbey?

On July 9, 2014, in response to a

FOIA request, I was informed that the current rent for the transition students’ property was $4,251.40 per month and that checks totaling $ 286,364.47 had been issued. If the person that negotiated the extension of this rental had kept the rent the same, in round numbers the Elmhurst taxpayers would have spent over $510,000 to date on rent.

When the land that is now Berens Park was transferred to the Park District by District 205, I was led to believe that it was for $1 and then the Park District sold the lots on Walnut at

fair market value, by my then-principal Mr. Bob Merdian.

If it is true that the BOE sold the Park for $1, then it is only fair that we should pay $1 for The Abbey? Any amount more that would be, in my opinion, a bad deal and the people making such an agreement should be fired. That may seem harsh, but the money is coming out of the taxpayer’s purse. This would amount to a tax on property that the taxpayers already own.

UP Metra Lines announce new fare collection procedures Effective Monday, Oct. 5, Chicago commuters riding the UP North, Northwest and West Metra lines must show a valid ticket when boarding an outbound train or upon arrival at Ogilvie Transportation Center (OTC).

Union Pacific employees positioned behind protective, plexiglass booths will verify fares as commuters enter or leave train platforms, similar to how the railroad managed large event crowds in the past. The process increases fare collection, while helping keep Union Pacific employees and Chicago commuters safe and healthy as the world continues to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Sadly, Union Pacific experienced the tragic loss when two ticket agents passed away earlier this year,” said Union Pacific’s General Superintendent of Commuter Operations Benita

Gibson.

“What we know about COVID-19 continues to change, and we have a responsibility to our employees and commuters to put their health and safety first.”

Commuters are asked to have tickets or mobile devices ready to present, allowing them to efficiently move past verification booths, particularly with low ridership around 10% of pre-pandemic levels. Fare evasion signs are posted, and violators can be fined or prosecuted under state law.

Company alters course, repurposes machinery SourceOne Events began in owner’s Elmhurst garage

As the saying goes, “Necessity is the mother of invention,” and one Lombard company has taken that concept to heart.

“We’re in the meetings, trade shows and events business,” explained Mike Foster, director of Sales and Service for SourceOne Events, which has repurposed its machinery—used pre-COVID-19 to create materials and signage for the trade show industry—to make desks for young children.

Foster told how the company provides materials and signage and sets up booths for expositions.

“We help businesses and associations to set up their annual trade shows and expos, reservation counters, etc.,” he said. “A lot of these events take place in hotel ballrooms,” noting that SourceOne Events is the in-house supplier for the Schaumburg Convention Center, as well as three hotels in Orlando, where SourceOne Events opened an office four years ago.

Foster said the company also travels elsewhere across the country setting up conventions and trade expos.

“We were all set to go to Dallas [for] Macy’s, our truck was halfway to Dallas,” Foster said of the midMarch halt to so many businesses— including the call that their trip had been cancelled. “We [had] put the entire trade show in a truck. In our industry, the world just stopped.”

Chicago’s McCormick Place alone hosts as many as 150 expo-type events a year.

An Illinois state edict was then issued, limiting gatherings to 50 people or less.

“All things we work on [require more than] 50 people,” the director said.

Like many other businesses, SourceOne Events furloughed employees when trade shows and conventions were abruptly cancelled.

The director said at that point, some of the employees worked from home.

“We could only talk to our customers about next year,” he said.

During the down time, employees cleaned and organized the warehouse and by the first week of June, they realized this was going to be the norm

for a long time.

Owner Mike Bojesen, who started SourceOne Events out of his garage in Elmhurst, told employees, “We have to come up with other products” to keep afloat.

“Everyone realized this is not going to be over by this summer,” said Foster.

Many businesses began to repurpose existing equipment, and in the case of SourceOne Events, it was the use of a CNC machine that brought them a way to repurpose.

The CNC machine cuts out materials into the various shapes as desired. Foster said the machine was purchased in January because it was going to provide new products for trade shows.

“It all folds into place,” he explained.

Mazzochi presents ‘Made in Illinois’ Roundtable for National Manufacturing Day For National Manufacturing Day, State Rep. Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) gathered together state and local manufacturing representatives to promote workforce development and Illinois’ manufacturing economy.

Rep. Mazzochi’s ‘Made in Illinois’ Roundtable discussed the impact Illinois’ manufacturers have on the state economy, the challenges manufacturers are facing, and the resources available for those looking for a career in manufacturing.

The roundtable featured top representatives from the Illinois Manufacturing Association (IMA) including Donovan Griffith, the Director of Government Affairs, and Jim Nelson, Vice President of Education & Workforce Policy. During the discussion IMA expressed that holding back the state’s manufacturing growth is the lack of

Rep. Mazzochi was recently recog-

nized by the IMA for her voting and legislative record in support of job creators and small business owners. In May, recognizing that manufacturing essential supplies in country as opposed to internationally is vital, especially in the midst of a pandemic, Rep. Mazzochi filed House Bill 5788 to entice critical manufacturing back from overseas and to Illinois.

“With Illinois facing over 11% unemployment, and businesses and residents fleeing to other states, we absolutely must pay attention to our manufacturing sector, and ways to keep it here,” Rep. Mazzochi explained. “Every nation with a healthy middle class has a strong manufacturing sector.

In Illinois, advanced manufacturing translates into good jobs, union jobs, as well as all of the support teams surrounding them.”

Mazzochi also noted that one of Illinois’ natural advantages it had over the years—a skilled workforce—has not translated into applicants for manufacturing positions.

“The raw, single-minded focus on a 4-year degree over the past few decades has resulted in a serious skills gap and left quality, good paying jobs unfilled,” she said. “We need to change the conversation and that begins with open roundtables like this.”

Roundtable contributor Ray Doogan, local plant manager for global manufacturing company Ingredion, echoed these same concerns.

“People have an outdated image of manufacturing and today’s manufacturers are facing challenges in the acquisition of talent,” Rep. Mazzochi continued. “While I was on the board at the College of DuPage, we started

Project Hire-Ed to ensure our community colleges were helping to address the skills gap and connect students with businesses to help them learn practical, applicable knowledge without massive debt.”

Rounding out the discussion, Danielle Kuglin Seago, the current Project Hire-Ed manager, discussed the opportunities available to those who are interested in a career in manufacturing and how to make it happen, and emphasized the successes both students and employers have found through the program.

She and Ray Doogan discussed what employers are looking for and what an investment apprenticeship programs can be.

IC Catholic Prep girls golfers compete in MSC tournament York girls cross country team defeats Lyons Township

Three girls from the IC Catholic Prep boys golf team participated in the recent Metro Suburban Conference tournament at Oak Springs Golf Club in Kankakee.

“Because we don’t have a girls

golf program these ladies are part of the boys golf team, practicing together each day and playing in JV matches from the men’s tees,” IC Catholic Prep coach Don Sujack said. “The conference tournament was the first 18-hole tournament for each of them.”

The IC Catholic Prep boys golf team tied fourth at the recent Metro Suburban Conference tournament held at Kankakee Elks Golf Club in Kankakee.

Jann Atendido led the Knights, finishing in 10th place with an 81.

Michael Hilgart shot 83, while John Hilgart finished with a 90.

Nick Zanoni shot 91 to round out the Knights scoring. Wheaton Academy, St. Francis and Riverside-Brookfield finished ahead of IC Catholic Prep.

“Nobody played particularly well at conference and that was disappointing coming off a nice showing at Montini,” IC Catholic Prep coach Don Sujack said. “Our depth has been a strength this year, but it wasn’t at conference. It was a good lesson in that everyone has to be ready to grind it out, especially in an 18-hole event.”

The Knights finished up their regular season after the conference tournament, first defeating Lisle 163-178 in a non-conference match at Maple Meadows in Wood Dale. John Hilgart was the medalist with a 38. Luke Tardiff added a 40, while Zanoni finished with a 41.

“Our match against Lisle was a nice rebound, especially with Johnny Hilgart and Luke Tardiff each posting personal bests,” Sujack noted. “The fact regionals will be right here at Maple Meadows where we have had some success is a plus. We’re young, but if we can

better manage our games when it’s not going well and then capitalize on some opportunities when they arise, we can compete strongly.”

The Knights concluded the regular season in usual fashion at the Elmhurst Classic, which was reduced to just IC Catholic Prep and Timothy Christian this year due to York being unable to compete due to COVID restrictions limiting it to playing West Suburban Conference teams only.

“York was unable to participate, but the tradition of pitting two-man scramble teams against friends and co-competitors from the other school continued,” Sujack said.

“This year’s version had rain, wind, hail, lightning, sunshine, as well as coaches’ participation. The event came down to the last putt of the last group. We missed York, but it was a win for Elmhurst high school golf. The competition was spirited and the fellowship was evident.

Everyone came off the course cold and wet, but with a smile and looking forward to the next time we can do this. That said, I’m going to have to up my game as Jeff (Timothy coach Vander Naald) is as good a player as he is a coach.”

IC Catholic Prep hosted a Class 1A regional earlier this week at Maple Meadows. With COVID-19 restrictions, only the top two teams and the top four individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to the recently added sectional round, which will take place Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Spring Creek Golf Course in Spring Valley. Peru St. Bede is the sectional host. Usually, the top three teams and top 10 individuals advance to the sectional round. There is no state tournament this year due to the pandemic.

“We have seen that competing against the boys both in practice and in matches creates a certain resiliency for young ladies that can prove quite valuable when they go out on their own,” Sujack explained. “In spite of their limited playing opportunities, there is not much these ladies haven’t already seen or heard, and the three of them were more than ready when put into a tournament situation.”

Sujack has been impressed with Calabria’s rapid development on the links. “Nina is now demonstrating to all what she proved in our JV matches. She can play with anybody from any tee,” Sujack said. “Bella and Faith didn’t have the playing opportunities that Nina had, but they both are serious golfers with the athleticism to match. All three

have embraced the challenges of being a girl on a boys team, and the results speak for themselves. We can’t wait for regionals.”

The three Knights girls players took part in the Class 1A Johnsburg regional earlier this week at Boone Creek Golf Club in Bull Valley up in McHenry County. Advancing teams and individual golfers move on to the Class 1A Morris sectional this coming Monday, Oct. 12, at The Creek in Morris.

York girls cross country The York girls cross country team scored a recent 20-49 West Suburban Conference Silver Division win against Lyons Township.

York’s top five runners in the meet all recorded personal bests with Brooke Berger running 17:19.

Michaela Quinn ran 17:30, while Katelyn Winton clocked in at

17:31. Bria Bennis ran 17:31 and Kathrine Klimek ran 17:47.

“The pack running has improved this season along with the girls’ work ethic, dedication and perseverance,” York coach Lauren DeAngelis said. “We have a great, solid pack up front with Brooke, Michaela, Katelyn, Bria and Kathrine.”

DeAngelis added that the teams sixth through ninth runners — Maggie Owens, Erin Powers, Bella Swanson and Allison Fitzgibbons — have been very strong as well.

“We have to stay healthy, focused and trust that training process we have instilled this year,” said DeAngelis. “This group is special and works tremendously well together.”

York runs at home Saturday against Downers Grove North in another WSC Silver battle.

Trojans defeat Rams

Timothy Christian’s girls tennis team faced Glenbard East in Saturday’s expanded dual meet in Lombard. The meet featured eight doubles matches and seven singles contests. Players were able to compete in both singles and doubles. The Trojans beat the Rams 13-2 in the meet. Timothy Christian won seven of eight doubles matches and six of seven singles battles. Senior Cassie Lee of the Trojans began the meet by teaming with her sister—freshman Crystina Lee—to earn a victory in the No. 1 doubles match. Cassie later earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles.

Timothy Christian coach Keith Mills noted improvements of late have come via keeping the ball in play longer, and also working on different strategies to use, mostly in doubles play.

The Trojans’ singles division continues to excel with the No. 1 singles spot having just one loss with three players rotating into that spot in the form of Cassandra Lee, Yelenosky and Crystina Lee. The doubles report is even more impressive with the No. 1 doubles spot being undefeated in both match and set play. Carstensen usually mans the No. 1 position with one of the Lee sisters.

Mills had high praise for Yelenosky and freshman Chen in particular. “Alex has improved from freshman year, especially in doubles,” he said. “Clarissa has im-

proved her mental game in the last two weeks.”

Mills said the lofty record has been a mixed bag of sorts. “We expected to be good this year and haven’t disappointed so far,” he said.

“With the reduced COVID rules and limited weekend schedule, we have not been tested as much as I would like.”

In a 4-3 loss to Glenbard West at Berens Park in Elmhurst, Sasha Neidigh was a 3-6, 6-1, (10-4) winner at No. 3 singles. Zoe Burkhardt and Gabby Felder were 6-2, 6-1 winners at No. 3 doubles, while Clare Hewitt and Maddie Jeffery were 6-2, 6-2 winners at No. 4 doubles.

York moved to 6-3 overall with an 8-2 win at Downers Grove North. Gianna Nikoleit was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles. Amelia Karr won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Neidigh was a 7-5, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles.

Morgan Burnham and Elle Duhig were 6-3, 3-6, (11-9) winners at No. 1 doubles. York boys golf team finishes second in conference tournament Polomsky, Bartolone, Leonard and Sutter earn all-WSC Silver honors

The York boys golf team wrapped up West Suburban Conference Silver Division play by taking second in the recent conference tournament at Cog Hill No. 3 in Lemont.

York ended up finishing third overall in the WSC Silver standings this season.

“Our kids battled all day today in

cold, rainy conditions,” York coach Jim Borel said. “To place second and put four kids on the all-conference team in the toughest conference in the state is a great accomplishment. We started six seniors today and most of the rest of the team came out to support our kids. I was proud of all of them.

This is a great group of kids and they all pull for each other.”

York shot an even 300 in the conference tournament. Hinsdale Central won the tournament with a 292.

The Dukes were five strokes ahead of Glenbard West and six better than both Downers Grove North and Lyons

Township.

Connor Polomsky led the way for the Dukes with a 73. Sam Bartolone added a 74, while Jack Leonard shot 76 and Zach Sutter shot a 77. Joe Bonelli shot 79 and Nate White finished with an 84.

Polomsky ended in a three-way tie for fourth place in the tournament with his 73. A 70 score won the tournament and a pair of golfers shot 71 to share the second position.

Polomsky, Bartolone, Leonard and Sutter earned all-WSC Silver honors.

Earlier, the Dukes competed in the Hinsdale Central invitational where

they took second to Lyons Township, which York later defeated at the conference tournament.

Lyons won the invite with a 301.

York was second at 314, while Hinsdale Central finished third at 316.

“I was proud of our effort at Hinsdale Central,” Borel said. “It was cold and rainy and we finished second to a very good LT team. It’s always nice to beat Hinsdale Central. They have a strong program, and beating them is always an accomplishment.”

Bartolone finished fourth in the tournament with a 75. Polomsky shot 77, while Bonelli posted an 80 and Sutter

rounded out the scoring with an 82.

York played earlier this week in the Class 3A Elk Grove regional at Fox Run Golf Club in Elk Grove Village.

With the COVID-19-adjusted regulations, only the top two teams and the top four individual golfers not on qualifying teams advance to the recently added sectional round, which takes place Monday, Oct. 12 at The Bridges of Poplar Creek in Hoffman Estates.

Conant is the sectional host.

“There are some good teams at the regional,” Borel said late last week, “but if we play solid, we have a good chance to advance to the sectional.”

York’s girls golf team competed in Saturday’s West Suburban Conference Meet at Bloomingdale Golf Club. The Dukes finished fifth in the team standings of the event, which included 10 teams.

Junior Audrey Matias posted the Dukes’ best score of the meet, firing an 18-hole score of 80 on the par-71 course. Matias earned seventh-place honors in the meet’s individual standings. Senior Jenna Hughes posted a 91 for the Dukes to earn 19th place among individual competitors, while junior Macy Fries shot a 94. Seniors Nora Foley and Lauren Keith both turned in scores of 95 for York, while senior Julia Filosa shot a 98. Matias and Hughes both earned all-conference honors by finishing among the top 20 individuals in the meet. York is competing in this week’s nine-team IHSA Class 2A regional at Schaumburg Golf Club.

Another First Lady of Elmhurst…

Jean (Louderback) Baker (1918 – 1997)

(Reprinted with permission from The First Ladies of Elmhurst: Prominent Women of the Twentieth Century, the Independent has obtained permission from the Elmhurst History Museum to print stories from the book, published in 2001, recalling the outstanding women who have helped form our community. This week, we bring you Jean Baker, written by Genie Urick. Some portions have been edited.)

Jean L. Baker loved Elmhurst and enjoyed working for many causes that improved the quality of life for Elmhurst residents. Her husband, Philip, wants people to know that Jean was a “trailblazer!” He credits his wife with playing a key role in electing the first woman alderman, helping to secure the city underpass, directing the Elmhurst United Way and presiding over the United Community Concerns Association (UCCA). Jean contributed to and was a member of many Elmhurst organizations during her lifetime.

Born on November 29, 1918 in Philadelphia, Jean attended local schools and graduated from Temple University in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. Jean worked for the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce/Board of Trade for seven years. In 1947, she married Philip C. Baker. The couple moved to the Chicago area where Jean worked for Hoffman Music Company in Chicago. The Bakers had two children, Philip Baker Jr. (b. 2/3/48) and Jean B. Baker (b. 4/11/53).

Daughter Jean remembers, “We moved to Elmhurst in July 1953. Elmhurst was a suburban community that was a good place to raise children. The plan was for Dad to take the train (Chicago, Aurora and Elgin) to work in Chicago. The train stopped shortly after Mom and

Dad moved to Elmhurst, and Dad never did ride that train to work.

“Mother wanted women to be involved in local politics as it was the women, the mothers, that were at home during the day in Elmhurst and could see what needed to be done and who could do Jean much of the work from their Louderback respective kitchen tables.”

Baker And Jean Baker did a lot 1918-1997 of planning from her kitchen table! As a member of the People’s Party in the 1950s, she wanted to help Nan Tilly get elected as the first woman alderman on the Elmhurst City Council. Jean and her friends hosted many “Coffees” in residents’ homes to introduce them to the candidate. Jean worked tirelessly on the campaign. When Nan Tilly won the election in 1959, Jean Baker was given much credit for the victory.

She worked hard and helped coordinate many groups of people to make sure the public was well-informed about the need and the benefit of the underpass to the community.

“I remember her at the ribbon-cutting ceremony (December 1977) being one of the first people on the fire truck to ride through the underpass. It brought tears to her eyes and she was thrilled to have been able to work on such an important project.

“She still felt the sadness for the Millers for having the underpass too late to meet their need.”

Over the years, Jean was affiliated with many Elmhurst clubs and civic organizations including the Elmhurst United Way (Director 1976-83) and President (1984-86). She was recognized by the Elmhurst American Legion as Citizen of the Year in 1978. Jean was the first honorary life member of the Elmhurst Jaycees and in 1983, she was given the Distinguished Service Award.

The Chamber leads to the underpass for Jean From 1973 to 1986 Jean worked for the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In 1973 she also was co-chairman of the “Citizens for the Underpass.” Dr. Harriet Martin, Pastor of St. Peters United Church of Christ, where the Bakers were members, recalls that “Jean was one of the forces behind the underpass!”

Her daughter, Jean, tells this story: “It was a sad day when Tommy Miller died in his father’s arms waiting for the train to pass on their way to the hospital. He was just a baby and many of the families at our church attempted to help Ruthe and Tom Miller cope with their loss. When the opportunity came up, there was

A passion for the UCCA In 1984 I got a call from Jean Baker asking for television coverage for the United Community Concerns Association (UCCA). I had heard of the organization but didn’t know much about it. I had heard of Jean Baker, but had never met her. In January of 1984 we televised an interview with Elmhurst Mayor Abner Ganet and Jean, the first and only President of UCCA (1979-1997) until one month before she died. Jean did a wonderful job explaining how the UCCA works to collect food for needy families in the community during the holidays.

During the taping of the program, Mayor Ganet said to Jean, “Look in that camera and give them your telephone number in case you (the viewing audience) want to do something for your community. Call Jean Baker!” She solicited the home-viewing audience right over their television sets to make contributions.

She was so convincing that Mayor Ganet surprised her and offered to set up a collection site right at Elmhurst City Hall. It was obvious that Jean was excited about this. But she kept her composure, thanked the Mayor, and continued with the rest of the interview.

“Mother’s great passion was the United Community Concerns Association,” her daughter relates. “She gladly gave her time.

Mother felt that with all of the wealth and resources in the community, there was just no reason for people to go hungry. She always cooked for more people than we had for dinner… there was always enough for someone else to join us. She always appreciated all the support from everyone in the community from the schools, the businesses, the hospital and the service organizations. everyone. Everyone in Elmhurst has pitched in to help a neighbor at one time or another. That is what Mother would say makes Elmhurst such a nice place to live.”

Her cable television ‘career’ We [Continental Cablevision] televised one more interview with Jean Baker and Mayor Abner Ganet in March of 1985. This time the topic was the revitalization of downtown Elmhurst. Jean was very knowledgeable about the subject, having served as Chair of the Economic Resources and Services Commission (198385) and as a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee/City of Elmhurst Waste Water Treatment (1982). In addition, she served on Citizens Advisory Committees for both School District 205 and the Elmhurst Park District.

The television program was successful because of Jean’s ability to inform Elmhurst residents about plans for what eventually would be called Elmhurst City Centre. In fact, she was so at ease in front of a camera that when

I needed a host/reporter for a special Elmhurst Our Kind of Town (EOKT) program, we chose Jean Baker for the position because Pat Cheffer was unavailable. [Cheffer was later the regular host of EOKT for many years.]

We planned to highlight Country Fair Days on location in Wilder Park in September of 1991. It was a warm, muggy day but crowds of people came out to see more than 70 vendors, exhibitors, clubs and organizations. The shoot required a tight schedule, lots of walking and much stamina. Even my crew got tired. But as substitute host, Jean was a trooper. She insisted she didn’t need a script, never once used a cue card, and put all the guests at ease during their interviews. Jean was a natural talent.

On occasions I would run into Jean at various community events. Once we both showed up wearing the identical Alfred Dunner twopiece dress. Jean was a big woman with an even bigger sense of humor.

“Nice to know we both have good taste, even if the dress does look better on you in a smaller size!” she said with a laugh.

That was Jean Baker. She never was afraid to express her opinion and you always knew how she felt about an issue. Jean Baker died on November 12, 1997 and is buried in Arlington Cemetery in Elmhurst.

“At her funeral I had a laugh with several people that I’m sure Mother would have enjoyed,” her daughter Jean recalled. “Someone remarked that they met Mother and then Mother had called them and asked them to do something for one of her pet projects. The person told my mother that they would be happy to help, and then kind of reflected and said that he couldn’t imagine anyone saying ‘no’ to my mother. A couple other people were standing waiting to share their condolences with us and they, too, said that no one could say ‘no’ to Mother. My brother and I laughed as we knew that we could never say ‘no’ to Mother.

“It was nice to hear positive things about Mother at a very sad time for us. I feel confident that she would have gotten pleasure in being remembered that way.”

The Elmhurst Symphony is back!

You are invited to join ESO members, friends and musicians for the first of two virtual fall musical programs, beginning Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. and running through Nov. 6.

Heavenly Harp and Beautiful Brass: A French Connection features audience favorite, ESO Principal Harp Janelle Lake, as soloist in Ravel’s magical Introduction and Allegro for Harp and Orchestra, a showpiece for the harp and chamber ensemble. Lake will be joined by ESO Music Director and Conductor Stephen Alltop in Grandjany’s Aria in Classic Style for Harp and Organ.

Complementing the shimmering delicacy of the harp will be works for brass: the majestic Fanfare pour la Peri by Dukas, and Gottschalk’s lively Souvenir de Porto Rico.

Maestro Alltop will also provide commentary on the music and composers, including the connections between them, their international influence on music, and the back-
