Despite gardening virtues, questions remain about infringement, sustainability

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, there was a meeting of the Elmhurst Zoning and Planning Commission (ZPC) held in City Council Chambers. Attending were Kurt Warnke, Susan McCoyd, Dave Garland, Kevin Byrnes and Chair Susan Rose.

A public hearing to consider a text amendment to the City’s Zoning Ordinance was under consideration to provide language to regulate hoop houses, high tunnels, low tunnels and cold frames and to add definitions for greenhouses and conservatories.

The issue had appeared before the ZPC previously, but the City Council’s Development Planning & Zoning Committee asked the ZPC to reconsider the application. Rose announced that the session was to hear public feedback, but that Commissioners would not deliberate the issue that night, but would at a future meeting.

Rose began by thanking the audience for taking their time to come out to offer their thoughts -- pro or con – on the hoop house issue.

Members of the class decided that it should remind York about where the gift came from and mounted a campaign to call attention to the missing plaque.

District 205 Superintendent Coffee Series announced Next meeting is Oct. 25

ECCI Board endorses School District 205 referendum The Board of Directors of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry by special vote late in September passed a resolution of support for the proposed $168.5 million referendum for Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 on the ballot for the November 6 General Election.

Without dissent, the Directors supported the referendum based on a recommendation by the Governmental Affairs Committee made Sept.

18 at a special meeting held at the Chamber.

The Board voted to support the referendum in the belief that quality public educational facilities enhance property values, especially residential, and a quality public school system attracts a more educated and skilled workforce and their families.

Without dissent (and one present vote), the Committee recommended Board support based on three significant areas of need addressed in the referendum as follows: • Replace outdated facilities with construction at 103-year-old Lincoln Elementary School ($32.5 million) and 87-year-old Field Elementary School ($29 million), along with expansion and renovation of Edison Elementary School ($18.1 million) and Bryan Middle School ($12.5 million);

The Board previously discussed the referendum at its regular monthly meetings on July 24, Aug. 14 and Sept. 11, while the Committee also discussed at its Aug. 23 regular monthly meeting.

“The passage of this referendum is important for everyone in Elmhurst,”

stated Board of Directors Chair Ken Bartels of Community Bank of Elmhurst and Ken Bartels Consulting.

“Superior schools are vital to our overall community health and the Elmhurst Chamber is proud to provide its support.”

The referendum also features Future Ready Learning-driven improvements ($24.2 million) — including for new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)-related programming—and the groundwork to provide All-Day Kindergarten in schools across the district.

District 205 has grown by 1,000 students since 2006 to some 8,500 students, with growth projected at 1.4 percent per year for the near future.

In 2019, $25 million in bonds will be sold to fund the projects at Edison and Bryan, while the new construction at Lincoln and Field will be part of $50 million and then $93.5 million in bonds, respectively, in 2021 and 2023.

The owner of an Elmhurst home with an assessed valuation of $500,000 is projected to pay about $150 annually more than the $800 per year currently paid on bonds to be retired or refinanced.

The crooks will leave a message on an answering machine and call regardless of whether you owe anything.

The red flag here is that the IRS doesn’t make phone calls for any reason. The IRS will only contact you by mail through the U.S. Postal Service.

Double check with your bank Gonsoulin advised that overall, be selfish with your personal information, including your social security and bank account number. Do NOT give personal information to anyone over the phone. If they claim to be your bank, call your bank to confirm someone is requesting your information. Your bank will want to know if someone is impersonating them.

Anyone calling you whom you don’t know isn’t anyone to trust, and scammers are very adept at “sounding official.” If you do get a call that is suspect, the best thing to do is simply hang up the phone.

As hackers have been successful attacking numerous large companies, it is possible that some of your personal information is out there, where it shouldn’t be. Then she made a plea for civility.

“I would like to remind everyone that we are all hear to listen so let’s remember to listen to what others have to say, even if their view differs from yours, and let’s be respectful when others are speaking.”

There were 21 people who signed up to speak at the hearing. The first person to speak was Bill Sanders, who lives on Sunnyside.

“My family lives behind the hoop house,” he said. “We are not here to debate the virtues of gardening, but there’s a difference between dealing with a garden and a large plastic wrapped structure. [Hoop houses] do not measure up to the standards of the [community]. … If an exception is made for gardening, how do we police and enforce it?”

Officials should not block or impair sustainable living Another homeowner* urged the Commission to create definitions but not to stifle sustainable living.

“I support a hoop house because it makes us a more sustainable community and that includes making sustainable lifestyle choices including growing your own food,” she said. “There are many advantages, such as reduced spoilage. Elected officials have the responsibility of removing obstacles to sustainable living.”

“We can’t be arbitrary about this,” said resident Debbie Sandstrom. “We need a city who supports everyone … and allows everyone to do what they want to do in their own backyards.

There’s always compromise. What we want to do is to keep everyone safe and allow everyone to fulfill their hobbies. … Don’t make it too onerous to gardening.”

She suggested people could put up a fence, if they don’t like what they’re looking at.

Neighbors tell a tale of infringement The couple that lives on the 500 block of Sunnyside spoke next, noting they supported gardening and green initiatives. This was the couple that originally reported the hoop house to the City. They requested their names not be used in the newspaper, indicating to the Independent that they had been subject to harassment.

“During the two years [the hoop house] was up, we experienced significant and sustained frustration and loss of the use and enjoyment of our property,” said the male homeowner.

He made the following points: “The infringement is visual – The hoop house dominates our view, and when the sunlight hits the right angle each day, it even looks like it’s glowing.

“The infringement is audible – plastic sheeting is noisy and flaps in the wind, which is heard both inside and outside of our home.

“The infringement is tangible – as evidenced by the flooding we experience from water runoff. Displaced water is not being collected and is not absorbed by the sheltered, raised gardening beds, so it runs off the plastic and pools on our property along the south fence line, causing damage to our wooden fence posts as it is slow to be absorbed due to the clay soil.

“

Let’s not ignore the environmental impact of plastic hoop house waste due to the virtues of gardening itself. The method and means of extending the gardening season matters, but we need to be making responsible choices at every level and reducing our reliance on plastic is part of that.”

“The infringement is financial – I have engaged a real estate professional who estimates that we will need to reduce the selling price of our home by a minimum of $54,000 or 10%, due to the [neighboring structure].”

The female homeowner talked about what she called “a separate but related zoning issue.”

“I’m unclear about where the line is drawn between recreational and commercial gardening ventures,” she said. “The Virgils [who own the hoop house] grow a lot of produce and often have a substantial surplus, which they are known to share or sell. None of that is a problem per se, but I have been alarmed at the level of business activity that has taken place. This is not a kid’s lemonade stand … The Virgils’ produce sales function on a much higher level.

“The Virgils maintain a garden stand website, FairviewProduce.com, which displays a map with their home location. It has information regarding what produce is ‘available this week.’

They also have professionally-printed signage, which has been posted throughout our neighborhood on a weekly basis, directing outside traffic through our neighborhood to their home. During past seasons, my family and I have regularly witnessed customers waiting in queue to purchase their produce.”

With the hoop house case in court and currently under review by the City, the web site has not been active, but the neighbor is concerned it will start up again. She asked for clarification between recreational and profit-driven gardening ventures, noting she was not against yard sales or kids’ lemonade stands, but was concerned the hoop house had grown into “a larger-scale public produce sales operation,” which would be better suited for a venue like the Elmhurst Farmers Market.

Real estate expert weighs in In a letter to the ZPC, Chris Strauel, a broker with RE/MAX Enterprises, reported the findings of a market analysis.

ity to a large plastic accessory membrane structure would be reduced anywhere from 10% to 15%,” Strauel’s letter said. “Similar reductions would be seen if a home were located near train tracks, commercial buildings or a major thoroughfare.”

Strauel said the average price of a home in Elmhurst that closed over the past six months was $575,579 for 382 single-family homes, with the highest priced home being $1,814,368.

“Buyers who are willing to spend that kind of money are looking for high construction standards and a certain quality of living, which is what draws them to Elmhurst,” Strauel said. “The town has always maintained an excellent reputation with your location and high standards you have always had in place to protect your residents and property values. …

“Definitely not a win-win for Elmhurst!”

Perhaps not as sustainable as you think Resident Carol Snyder of the 400 block of No. Highland offered expertise on the subject, as she holds a degree in industrial design and co-owns a consulting business. She talked about

the membrane plastic sheeting that serves as a weather barrier and the fact that it is not recyclable.

“The plastic membrane sheeting is typically a low-density polyethylene film which is readily available and very inexpensive,” she said. “The film must be replaced every one to four years due to material compromise or degradation resulting from multiple factors: UV exposure, inclement weather, use of clips … as well as general wear and tear from seasonal set-up and teardown.”

Snyder said that while polyethylene plastic film sheeting is considered recyclable, it is not accepted for recycling and is handled as regular trash.

It is not only unacceptable per Elmhurst’s curbside recycling guidelines, but also is not accepted by outside recyclers due to contamination issues.

She had asked members of the Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition for assistance in locating a recycler for the material, but was unsuccessful. She even reached out to Richard Vandermolen, the municipal sales manager for Republic Services, who handles Elmhurst’s refuse and recycling. Vandermolen checked two databases and spoke with Republic’s materials recovery manager, but to no avail.

“So for all practical purposes, a hoop house is a limited life span, disposable plastic accessory structure,” Snyder said. “Contrary to other submitted testimony, this puts hoop houses at odds with our Comprehensive Plan for sustainability and Elmhurst Cool Cities initiatives.”

She added that she recognized the value of healthy lifestyle choices and sustainable, environmentally-friendly practices.

“Let’s not ignore the environmental impact of plastic hoop house waste due to the virtues of gardening itself,” she said. “The method and means of extending the gardening season matters, but we need to be making responsible choices at every level and reducing our reliance on plastic is part of that.”

Rose concluded the meeting by complimenting the crowd on heeding her request for civility.

“We can get so much more done when we get along, listen to one another and treat others with respect,” she said. “I thank you for that, I really appreciate it.” * The name of this homeowner was not available to the Independent at press time.

County announces first death from West Nile virus The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) has confirmed the first human death due to West Nile virus (WNV) infection. A DuPage County resident over the age of 65 who became ill in early September with WNV has died.

There have been 14 human cases reported in DuPage County in 2018.

“The report of a death is a sad reminder that it’s still important to protect yourself, protect your family against West Nile virus,” said Karen Ayala, DCHD executive director.

The health department’s Personal Protection Index (PPI) remains at Level 3 (high risk) because of the number of mosquito batches testing positive for WNV. Level 3 indicates high numbers of infected mosquitoes in most areas, and multiple human cases of WNV disease in DuPage County. View the PPI at dupagehealth.org.

The PPI provides a real-time snapshot of WNV activity, which ranges from Level 0 (zero) meaning no risk, to Level 3 announcing a high level of risk with multiple human cases of WNV. The PPI is updated every Wednesday at 3 p.m. throughout the WNV season.

While most people infected with WNV do not develop any symptoms, approximately one in five people infected with WNV will develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pains,

vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Less than one percent will develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis (inflammation of the brain or surrounding tissues).

People over the age of 60, and those with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and organ transplants are at greater risk for serious illness, and rarely may progress to coma and death.

Anyone who experiences symptoms that cause concern should contact their health care provider.

The health department continues to monitor WNV activity by collecting and testing mosquitoes from traps located throughout the county from May through October, the West Nile virus season.

Sept. 23 A victim in the 700 block of Mary Court told police at around 3:09 p.m. that while confronting a suspect about driving on the grass, the suspect pushed the victim, placed him into a bear-hug and both fell to the ground. The suspect told police the victim verbally abused him and attempted to pull him to the ground.

Neither party had visible injuries nor wished to pursue the incident. Both parties signed decline to investigate forms.

Sept. 20 Police said officers responded to the 100 block of S. Prospect at around 7:10 p.m. for the report of two juveniles fighting. A juvenile suspect stated an argument turned physical when the suspect pushed the victim. Both parties were separated by library staff. The suspect was cited for battery and released to his parents.

Criminal damage, criminal defacement

Sept. 23 A victim in the 100 block of S. Kenmore told police at around 1:45 p.m. that an unknown suspect rang the doorbell and then ran southbound on Kenmore when the homeowner answered the door. The suspect ran across the hood of the victim’s vehicle, causing a dent and leaving a muddy shoe print. The suspect was described as a black male in his early 20s, wearing a long-sleeved blue Adidas shirt.

Sept. 24 George E. Taylor, 76, of Elmhurst, was charged with disorderly conduct near Park and Prospect at around 9:21 a.m. According to police, a victim stated that while walking to the library with her grandson, an older white male suspect, identified as Taylor, made sexually explicit comments to her.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disturbance

Sept. 26 A 56-year-old man and a 23-year-old man, both from Elmhurst, were charged with domestic battery in the 600 block of W. Crockett at around 8:50 p.m. Police said that subsequent to a verbal argument, both suspects began physically fighting. A victim attempted to stop the fight and was pushed to the ground.

Sept. 23 A victim in the 300 block of N. West told police at around 2:52 p.m. that she and the suspect were parked in their driveway arguing.

The victim exited the car and walked to the rear. The suspect exited the vehicle and closed the rear hatchback, preventing the victim from removing some property. The suspect then backed out of the driveway and left the scene.

Sept. 27 Gerald Burks, 33, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles at around 1:37 a.m.

Sept. 24 Ryan Spector, 38, of Addison, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of drugs, improper lane usage and no headlights subsequent to a traffic stop near York and Lake at around 8:31 p.m.

Sept. 23 Jose M. Barajas, 52, of Oakbrook Terrace, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, speeding and failure to signal subsequent to a traffic stop near I-290 and York at around 2:39 a.m.

Joshua Figueroa, 23, of Addison, was charged with DUI, speeding, improper lane usage, driving without headlights when required and tinted side windows subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Route 83 at around 4:51 a.m.

Gabriela Gonzalez, 22, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper turn and no rear registration subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Melrose at around 3:09 a.m.

Police said officers responded to the call of a driver sleeping behind the wheel at a traffic light near Butterfield and York at around 12:20 a.m. Subsequent to a traffic stop, the driver, a juvenile, was allegedly found to be DUI-drugs and in violation of curfew. During a search of the vehicle, cannabis dab and drug paraphernalia were located in the vehicle. The juvenile was charged with DUI-drugs, possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, improper parking on a roadway and a curfew violation.

Sept. 22 Kevin Babica, 27, of Addison, was charged with DUI and following too closely subsequent to a traffic stop near Butterfield and Commonwealth at around 1:57 a.m.

Lucas X. Mercado, 24, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, possession of cannabis, failure to signal and no insurance, while Adrian Castaneda, 28, of Berkeley, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Riverside at around 5:14 a.m.

Raymond Mora, 39, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, driving while license suspended, following too closely, speeding and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and Lake at around 1:49 a.m.

Harassment, threats

Sept. 25 Police said a victim in the 700 block of N. Walnut received a telephone call and text messages at around 11:54 a.m. from an unknown person demanding money “or else someone would hurt him and his family.” The victim was advised that this was an internet fraud and was told to block the phone number.

Aug. 20-Sept. 18 A victim in the 200 block of S. Grace told police that she and the suspect recently broke up. The suspect sent the victim a threatening text. The victim did not want to sign complaints at this time.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance

Sept. 26 Adam Crocetti, 33, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis and disobeying a traffic control device subsequent to a traffic stop near Lake and Walnut at around 7:54 p.m.

Sept. 24 Alonso Morales, 20, of Melrose Park, was charged with possession of cannabis and driving while license suspended, while Omar Perez, 19, of Berkeley, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in the 300 block of W. Commonwealth at around 4:47 p.m.

Sept. 23 Curtis J. Geiger, 21, of Tomahawk, Wis., was issued a citation for possession of cannabis at around 11:06 p.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near Commerce and Schiller at around 3:55 p.m., a reporting officer detected an odor of burnt cannabis coming from inside the vehicle. The vehicle was searched and a cannabis smoking pipe was located, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle, Victor S. Greutman, 25, of Villa Park, was charged under local ordinance with possession of drug paraphernalia, no valid driver’s license, no valid registration and no seat belt.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Sept. 26 Retail theft was reported at a gas station in the 400 block of N. York at around 6:07 a.m.

Police said a reporting officer responded to the report of a male white in his 20s, wearing a black shirt and blue jeans, who stole two burritos, exited the store, entered a red Chevy, and left the area. After further investigation, the reporting officer identified the suspect. The gas station wanted a no-trespass notice issued but did not want to sign complaints.

Sept. 4-Sept. 25 Theft by deception was reported in the 500 block of W. Babcock between the above dates.

A complainant told police that he received an email about an employment opportunity, which involved him receiving check and sending monetary items back to the alleged employer. The victim was advised to buy gift cards and then text the serial number to a

phone number. The victim became suspicious when the unknown person also requested cash to be transferred into a Western Union account.

Sept. 24 Identity theft was reported in the 700 block of S. Euclid at around 12:04 p.m. A victim told police she received a letter in the mail stating she had an outstanding balance on her Amazon credit card. The victim stated an Amazon credit card account had been fraudulently opened in her name.

Sept. 23 Daniel A. Odom, 20, of Elmhurst, was charged with retail theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in the 500 block of S. Spring at around 9:32 p.m. Two juvenile suspects were charged with retail theft and possession of tobacco.

A victim in the 400 block of S. Spring told police at around 3:35 p.m. that an unknown suspect entered her unlocked Honda Fit and removed her iPhone from the front dashboard.

Attempted retail theft was reported at a store in the 100 block of W. North at around 1:25 a.m. A complainant told police that she witnessed a suspect described as a black male, around 6’2”, 200 pounds, with a scruffy beard, wearing a black baseball cap and a large red coat enter the store and conceal bottles of vodka in his coat. When she confronted the suspect, he removed three bottles from his coat and ran out of the store.

A store inventory indicated all the liquor was now accounted for.

Commercial burglary was reported in the 500 block of W. Lake at around 6 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed 48 car tires and rims from an unlocked box truck parked at the above location. The case is pending investigation.

Sept. 22 Four incidents of burglary were reported in the 100 block of S. West at around 10:10 a.m.

In the first incident, a victim told police that cash and credit cards were missing from his secured locker. There were no signs of forced entry to the locker. In the second incident, a victim told police that his wristwatch, wallet, and several credit cards was missing from his secured locker. There were no signs of forced entry to the locker. In the third incident, a victim told police that his iPhone was missing from his secured locker. There were no signs of forced entry to the locker. In the fourth incident, a victim told police that his iPhone and his wallet were missing from his secured locker. There were no signs of forced entry to the locker. The suspect in each incident, described as a black male approximately 35 years old, wearing dark pants, a dark blue coat, a U.S. Army baseball cap and carrying a red bag, matches the description from similar locker burglaries in another town.

A victim at Elmhurst Hospital told police at around 12:01 p.m. that she left her phone unattended for two hours in the ER waiting room.

When she returned, her phone was missing.

Surveillance footage showed the phone was taken by an unknown suspect. The victim did not want to press charges and the phone was returned to her. The suspect was served with a no-trespass notice and left the property.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 600 block of N. York at around 4:46 p.m. A complainant told police he observed the incident on store surveillance footage. Mazzochi legislation would strengthen penalties for attacks on DCFS agents

State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (R-Elmhurst) has signed on as a co-sponsor of legislation that would strengthen criminal penalties for those found guilty of battering an employee of the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) while, or as a result of, performing duties of their job.

HB 4147 extends to DCFS workers the same protections already afforded to police officers and firefighters, by making an attack on a DCFS worker an aggravated battery and a Class 1 Felony. The aggravated battery classification subjects perpetrators to stronger sentences.

According to Mazzochi, HB 4147 was filed earlier this year in response to a brutal attack that led to the death of a DCFS worker who was taking a child out of an unsafe home and into protective custody. “DCFS workers protect the most vulnerable children in our state and their duties often put them in harm’s way,” said Mazzochi. “We have elevated the available penalties for those who would harm a police officer or firefighter who is acting in the line of duty, and our DCFS employees are deserving of the same protections.”

Since its filing, HB 4147 has garnered strong bipartisan support by 40 co-sponsors in the House. However, the bill remains in Speaker Mike Madigan’s House Rules Committee and has not yet been scheduled for a hearing.

“I am frequently asked why we keep hearing that one Chicago state representative, Mike Madigan, is an obstacle to Illinois reform,” added Mazzochi. “His House Rules Committee routinely quashes reforms that may benefit our most vulnerable—even if bipartisan support is behind it in the General Assembly and the State as a whole—because he needs to keep a few precious votes of one political faction or another in his caucus to stay in power. That sacrifices good policy to the will of political insiders.”

Mock elections at area high schools ‘elect’ Pritzker governor LWV, commission provide authentic machines, ballots, tabulators

During the week of Sept. 17, the Elmhurst League of Women Voters took part in mock elections at York High School.

The Mid-term elections are an important part of the election process, covering all 435 Congressional races, as well as important state offices including Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer and more. Unlike presidential elections, which use the Electoral College to determine who the next president will be, Congressional elections use the direct vote of a state’s citizens to choose the winners.

As Illinois prepares to elect state, congressional and local public officials on Tuesday, Nov. 6, students and teachers in 14 high schools in DuPage County participated in mock elections.

Since 2008, students experience a unique learning experience by voting in a mock election on actual voting machines, ballots and vote tabulators used in polling places. The League of Women Voters, the DuPage Election Commission and Governmental Business Systems (GBS) partnered with DuPage County high schools to provide a hands-on learning experience.

“[The League of Women Voters has] a long history of community involvement and leadership, including nonpartisan election activities, such as sponsoring candidate debates and town hall meetings on important public issues,” said LWV member and volunteer Jan Dorner. “Bringing the mock election experience to the schools increases civic awareness.”

Teachers like the authentic voting learning experience.

“Democracy is not a spectator sport,” said York teacher Lindsey DiTomasso. “We are so privileged at York High School to have a positive and sustainable relationship with Elmhurst League of Women Voters and DuPage County Board of Elections allowing our students to have opportunities for both civic engagement and exposure to the responsibilities of being a citizen.”

Social studies teachers worked closely with League representatives to maximize student participation.

Students experience the entire voting process – from registering to vote to casting ballots. Students voted for representatives from the 5th, 6th, 8th, and 11th Congressional Districts along with Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Controller, and Treasurer.

Partnering with the League was the DuPage Election Commission.

The Election Commission delivered actual voting equipment to the 14 schools, including voting booths, a ballot box and optical scanner. Student voters received the “I Voted Sticker” after completing the ballot and feeding it into the optical scan-

ner.

The official results from York are as follows: At York High School, a total of 1962 ballots were counted. JB Pritzker (D) won the race for governor, garnering 835 votes to Governor Bruce Rauner’s (R) 571, followed by Kash Jackson (L) with 128 and Sam McCann (C) with 56. For Attorney General, Kwame Raoul (D) received 782 votes over Erika Harold’s (R) 703, followed by Bubba Harsy (L) with 429. Jesse White (D) dominated the vote for Secretary of State with 1,086 over Jason Helland’s (R) 601 and Steve Dutner’s (L) 233. In the race for State Controller, Susana Mendoza (D) received 867 votes over Darlene Senger’s (R) 725 and Claire Ball’s (L) 327. State Treasurer went to Jim Dodge (R) with 853 votes, while Mike Frerichs (D) had 741 and Mike Leheney (L) received 266. In the 5th Congressional District, incumbent Mike Quigley (D) garnered 1186 votes to Tom Hanson’s (R) 753.

Commission on Youth presents ‘From Dope To Hope’

The City of Elmhurst’s Commission on Youth welcomes speaker Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Bryan Middle School Auditorium, 111 West Butterfield Road. The presentation, “From Dope to Hope,” will be given by Ryan who is a nationally-claimed addiction expert and recovery advocate.

A sought-after thought leader and speaker on the opioid pandemic, Ryan is bringing his message of hope to Elmhurst. This event is free and open to the public.

No stranger to the addiction crisis, Ryan admits heroin stole half of his life and took his own son. Since walking out of prison, his mission has been to help one addict at a time

transform their lives from dope to hope.

Ryan was an invited guest of the U.S. President to the 2016 State of the Union Address. He works for Transformations Treatment Center and is an advisor for Rehab.com, providing effective addiction treatment options. Ryan runs A Man in Recovery Foundation to guide the uninsured into quality care. He has been featured on A&E, HLN, in Newsweek and in USA Today.

Following the presentation, Matthew Quinn of Rosecrance Treatment Facility will lead a Q&A session.

On Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., Bethel United Church of Christ’s Music at Bethel concert series opens its 20th season with the renowned Chicagoland singer, songwriter, actor and director Lara Filip presenting an evening of original compositions from her debut album Stop Time, accompanied by a 5-piece orchestra.

Her music has been described as a split between 70s Laurel Canyon folk rock, and polished piano pop.

Filip has appeared at Bethel United Church of Christ twice previously, presenting musical theater selections from My Fair Lady, The Secret Garden, The Baker’s Wife, West Side Story, and White Christmas.

“Vocally, Filip’s voice is a soulful blend of a folk singer/songwriter and a vibrant musical theater star,” said Jeffrey Panko, artistic director, frequent soloist and collaborator in the series since its inception 20 years ago.

She has been seen in leading roles on just about every stage in the region, including Drury Lane, Marriott Lincolnshire, Court Theatre, Mercury Theater Chicago, Victory Gardens Theater and more. She was most recently seen in the role of Emily Hobbs in Paramount Theatre’s standout production of Elf the Musical.

Chrysalis Custom Hair emerges in local area Creates custom wigs especially for women living with cancer

Before a butterfly emerges from its chrysalis – its protective shell -it must go through many stages of change, not all of which are as beautiful as the colorful butterfly ready to spread its wings.

As a cancer-support specialist, Kimberly Johnson learned very well the stages that cancer patients struggle through. For years, working with not-for-profits to support those diagnosed with cancer, Johnson found “many women were most upset about the prospect of losing their hair.”

“I listened and heard how women dealing with hair release [and searching for wigs] were treated poorly or not in the right environment,” she said.

This knowledge blossomed into an opportunity to help women cope with cancer. Johnson founded Chrysalis Custom Hair, a comfortable and private place where women can explore wig options and find the perfect fit just for them.

Johnson said her best friend’s mother was a cancer survivor and also a butterfly photographer.

“After searching for a business name for about a year, I saw some of her butterfly artwork in my friend’s home, and it all just clicked,” she said.

Chicago about five years ago. The Elmhurst boutique followed in May 2018 and is designed similarly to the Chicago spot. Inside the front door and windows, frosted for maximum privacy, the location is clean, cheerfully decorated with comfortable furniture and gentle lighting. It is also accented with butterfly artwork seemingly placed to remind all who enter about the beauty of a butterfly after it emerges from its cocoon.

Chrysalis, whose tag line is “Just Women, Just Cancer, Just Hair,” is open six days a week by appointment only. Johnson always makes sure a receptionist is on hand to answer the phone during business hours.

“It’s our first point of contact with you, and we know you want a human being to talk to,” said Johnson.

“Sometimes you’re scared and confused. And when you come in, we want you to feel comfortable. It’s hard enough to not feel like yourself (while living with cancer), but to look into a mirror and not see yourself is very, very hard.”

Getting the right match Johnson recommends that women interested in getting fitted for a wig upon receiving a cancer diagnosis should come in for an initial visit as soon as possible. It’s helpful for them to bring along pictures of themselves prior to hair release.

Humble beginnings “Our [stylists] are amazing artChrysalis first opened its doors in ists...typically the selection is

matched to the same kind of hair as the client’s, the same general color,” she said. “It’s not a great time to go changing your look when you’re already not feeling yourself.”

Many of our clients walk out same day with a wig custom-fitted and cut just for them. Some can take a little longer depending on if a custom color or highlights are wanted.

Chrysalis has a vast inventory of pre-colored wigs, that is, handcut and hand-colored, Johnson explained. And like many products, there are a variety of colors, styles and costs. Chrysalis provides wigs made of synthetic hair and human hair.

“Some custom wigs can take 100 man-hours to assemble,” said Johnson. “I have those sewn together overseas and when they come to us, our hair stylist experts fit them onto [a client’s] head and into her cut.”

For synthetics, the cost can range between $750-$950. Natural hair starts at $1,500. Johnson explained that cost increases are based on length, construction, and how much work needs to be done to make a replica of a client’s hair.

Law exhibit stops at College of DuPage

The traveling Bicentennial of Illinois Law Exhibit is on display the Student Service Center at the College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.

The interesting and educational exhibit features prominent lawyers and cases in Illinois history, information about how the court system operates, and a general history of the judiciary’s first 200 years of existence. Cases featured include Block v. City of Chicago, which concerned the first movie censorship laws, and lawyers featured include Ferdinand Barnett, one of the first African American attorneys licensed in Illinois.

The exhibit also highlights the important role that the judicial branch has in upholding the rule of law, providing a forum for dispute resolution, and interpreting the law.

“Over the past two centuries, the

judicial branch of the state of Illinois has evolved into one of the largest unified court systems in the United States. Although our work has had an important impact on the character and quality of life in Illinois, our contributions are little known beyond the legal community,” Chief Justice Lloyd A. Karmeier said. “I am hopeful that this exhibition will help both students and the public at large develop a better understanding of our legal system’s rich history and the central role played by the courts in preserving the principles on which our system of government is based.”

The exhibit is one of several bicentennial activities sponsored by the Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission to commemorate 200 years of the Illinois judicial branch.

nity to celebrate the many cultural, economic, academic, and political contributions that Illinois and its residents have made to the nation and the world, and the Bicentennial of Illinois Law Exhibit showcases the contributions of the legal community to the history of Illinois.

Mills has had to field a number of different lineups this season, but is looking forward to the home stretch of the season where Ahn and Lee are expected once again to make a significant impact in the postseason.

“I have had to juggle the lineup constantly due to several factors and that has slowed our progress,” he said. “The lower doubles spots and second singles I knew would be a work in progress and we’re working hard to improve there. York boys cross country team sixth out of 63 teams at Peoria Notre Dame invitational Kern second at Peoria; Klysh second at Joliet; York sophomores win two invites

York boys cross country coach Charlie Kern, in his update report sent out to alumni, noted the team had a bit of a chip on its shoulder heading into the Peoria Notre Dame-hosted Richard Spring invitational at Detweiller Park. That venue is the site of the state finals meet every year.

“We were very excited to see how the boys would respond on this trip,” he said. “We went down with a chip on our shoulder as MileSplit IL pulled us out of the top 25 rankings based on our fifth-place finish at Joliet. We knew rankings do not mean anything, but we used it to fuel our weekend nonetheless.”

The Dukes ended up finishing sixth out of 63 scoring teams in the large field. York had 259 points.

Wheaton-Warrenville South won the meet with 42 points.

Ethan Kern took second in the race, which featured 437 finishing runners. Kern covered the course in 14:41, four seconds behind winner Josh Methner from Hersey.

Daniel Klysh was 13th with a time of 15:02, while Michael Moriarty was 75th with a time of 15:54.

Brian Pratt finished 77th with a time of 15:56. Johnny Brennan was 96th with a time of 16:06. Will Yasdick took 139th in 16:26 and Luke Montgomery was 181st in 16:46.

York’s sophomores won the sophomore team title with only 44 points.

Neuqua Valley was a distant second with 89 points.

Colin Hill took second for the Dukes with a time of 15:26, just two seconds off St. Charles East freshman Micah Wilson’s 15:24 winning time.

Thomas Braun was York’s second finisher, while Mickey Vreeland crossed third and Sam Ayers fourth.

Braun finished fifth at 15:52, while Vreeland was sixth at 15:54 and Ayers was ninth at 15:59. Freshman Eric Rutherford was 24th in 16:25, while freshman Jackson Geiger was 38th in 16:37. Charlie Kern noted recent freshman times included Klysh (17:08), Ethan Kern (16:13), Ayers (17:24) and Braun (17:08).

“We were amazed to see both freshmen battling for their team,” said Kern. “Rutherford ran out of his mind and PR’d at the mile, two-mile and three-mile marks. It was an outstanding effort by the whole sophomore team.”

Kern added the top seven runners sat at a round table at the facility and the other runners were in a booth. “The goal has become to sit at the round table and we will continue to send that message throughout the fall,” said Kern, who noted no phones were allowed at the table until the meal was completed. “The boys enjoyed the food, had great conversations and even a few uncontrollable laughs. Earlier, York competed against Glenbard West in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division dual meet.

Yasdick was York’s first finisher in the weather-necessitated combined sophomore and varsity race. He ran 16:59.

York also finished fifth at the Joliet Steelman invitational.

In the sophomore race, Hill won by 54 seconds and Kern noted he would have had the fourth scoring time at the varsity level.

Ayers, Braun and Vreeland finished second, third and fourth to give York the first four finishers in the sophomore race.

“Colin went out in 5:07 and never looked back,” said Kern.

Geiger took 10th and Rutherford finished 11th to help the York sophomores win the team title.

“Our concern was how well the freshmen would respond to their first three-mile race,” said Kern. “They responded magnificently.

York boys golf team finishes second in conference Mann ties for conference meet medalist honors with blistering 4-under 68

The York boys golf team continued its string of successes by finishing second at the recent West Suburban Conference Silver Division tournament held at Prairie Bluff in Lockport.

The Dukes, based on their tournament finish and dual-meet conference record (4-2), ended up second overall in the conference.

York shot an impressive 294, which was a season-low by two strokes, besting a 296 that was carded at its recent win at the Charger invite in West Dundee.

York’s 294 was just six strokes over par as a team.

“We played great at the conference tournament,” said York coach Jim Borel.

Aidan Mann shot a 4-under-par 68 to tie for conference meet medalist honors. Joshua LaBounty shot evenpar 72 and Sam Bartolone was four over at 76. All three were named to the all-WSC Silver team. Matt Buckley shot 78 to round out York’s scoring.

It was the fourth time this season York had four scores in the 70s during an 18-hole event.

“I was proud of how well our boys handled the pressure of playing in a conference meet against some of the best teams in the state,” said Borel.

Hinsdale Central won the meet with a 288, meaning York was only six strokes back of the multi-time state champions.

“We have finished second in the conference to six-time-champion Hinsdale Central the last four years starting in 2015, which is an amazing statistic considering that Lyons, Glenbard West, OPRF and Downers Grove North all are very strong programs,” Borel said.

Borel also had high praise for Mann’s performance.

“Aidan Mann was awesome all day and had every part of his game

working,” said Borel.

The Dukes also partook in a special golf clinic hosted by PGA Tour pro and Elmhurst resident Mark Wilson at Oak Meadows. Golfers from IC Catholic Prep and Timothy Christian also were part of the clinic.

“Mark gave a clinic to all the Elmhurst high-school golf programs, which was fantastic,” said Borel. “He had some interesting PGA tour stories, demonstrated some short- and

long-game shots and answered all our kids’ questions. He’s a very nice person who is down to earth and instantly made an impression with all our kids.”

York played earlier in the week in a Class 3A regional held at Hilldale Golf Club in Hoffman Estates. “It’s a difficult course, but our kids are playing well and looking forward to the challenge,” said Borel.

York was 7-2 in dual matches

through late last week with the usual Elmhurst Classic with IC Catholic Prep and Timothy Christian still to come.

York was averaging a 154.26 as a team for nine holes. LaBounty was leading the way with a 38.09 average for nine. Mann was at 39.0, while Bartolone was at 39.4 and Buckley was averaging 39.56. Zach Sutter was at 40.2 and Jacob Wit was at 40.3.

It’s back to the playoffs for the two-time defending state champions.

The IC Catholic Prep football team automatically qualified for the playoffs thanks to a 56-0 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division victory against Aurora Central Catholic in Aurora.

The win moved IC Catholic Prep to 6-0 and earned an automatic playoff bid with its sixth victory. The Knights improved to 4-0 in MSC Blue play.

The Knights are in the playoffs for the fourth year in a row.

In the win against ACC, the Knights were efficient in their offensive attack, racking up 228 yards passing on 19 throws and running for 222 yards on a swift 18 carries (12.3 yards per carry).

Khalil Saunders completed 10 of 16 passes for 148 yards and a score, while Tommy Ryan was 2 of 3 for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Kyle Franklin ran seven times for 69 yards and two touchdowns.

Rashad Sbeih ran two times for 57 yards and one touchdown, while Steven Crady ran three times for 56 yards and a touchdown. Will Cooke ran two times for 19 yards, while Saunders ran three times for 16 yards and a touchdown. Ryan had a fiveyard touchdown run. Five different IC Catholic Prep runners scored a total of six touchdowns in the blowout.

Chauncey Lee caught two passes for 80 yards and a touchdown, while Kevin Cooke caught one pass for 37 yards. Khali Saunders caught two passes for 32 yards and a touchdown.

Franklin caught two passes for 31 yards. Ryan Malek caught two passes for 17 yards. Jalen Bates caught one pass for 16 yards, while Crady also had a 16-yard catch. Jacob Lytton caught one pass for nine yards.

IC Catholic Prep quarterbacks completed passes to eight different receivers.

Lytton also had 69 yards worth of kick and punt returns in the game, while Lee had 33 yards in interception returns and Malek had nine yards in that category.

On defense, IC Catholic Prep needed to make only 67 total tack-

les in the game. Cooke led the way with 13, while Dominick Krepulec had 12. Khalil Saunders added six tackles.

Mysliwiec had 16 yards in losses, while Draper had eight. Johnson also had three hurries while AJ Howard had one.

Lee and Malek each had an interception, while Lee and Johnson each had two pass deflections. Mysliwiec and Danny Roberto each had one deflection. Crady caused a fumble, while Malek and Kevin Cooke each recovered a fumble.

The loss dropped York to 2-4 overall. The Dukes must win their final three games in order to become playoff eligible.

York ran 31 times for 87 yards against Willowbrook. Nick Conroy had 12 carries for 34 yards. KeVon Robinson had five carries for 15 yards. Daniel Dunn ran 14 times for 38 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.

York receivers caught 14 passes for 160 yards. Josiah Scott caught two passes for seven yards. Conroy had one catch for 19 yards, while Robinson had one catch for nine yards. Owen Pechous had three catches for 37 yards. Mike Pedote caught one pass for nine yards, while Dunn had one catch for two yards.

Joe Orrico caught two passes for 28 yards. Antonio Munoz had a 32-yard touchdown catch, while Joe Meyers caught two passes for 17 yards.

Clayton Letourneau had 31 yards in punt returns.

York faces Oak Park-River Forest on the road Friday in a WSC Silver Division contest. York is 1-2 in WSC Silver play.

IC Catholic Prep boys golf team fifth at MSC meet Knights take part in special Mark Wilson golf clinic

The IC Catholic Prep boys golf team took fifth out of 14 teams at the recent Metro Suburban Conference tournament held at Phillips Park in Aurora.

Thomas Hilgart led the way for the Knights with an 82. Michael Carpanzano added an 85, while Louis Narcisi finished with an 86 and Shane Rollins tabulated a 90.

The Knights finished with a 343 team score.

“This was a nice tournament for the boys,” said IC Catholic Prep coach Don Sujack. “We were in the mix for third place (7 shots back).

We overcame some self-inflicted setbacks and we competed strongly. It gives us a great mindset for heading

into regionals.”

The Knights played earlier this week in the Class 1A Walther Christian regional at White Pines West course in Bensenville.

After the MSC tournament, the Knights joined golfers from York and Timothy Christian at a special clinic hosted by five-time PGA tour winner and Elmhurst resident Mark Wilson.

The York girls tennis team recently won the West Aurora Quad and then scored a West Suburban Conference Silver Division victory over Proviso West to run its winning streak to seven in a row.

The Dukes also have won eight of their last nine matches.

“We played very smart tennis all day,” said York coach Tres Heimann of the team’s performance at West Aurora.

In a 6-1 win over host West Aurora, Gianna Nikoleit was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles, while Natalie Krauter was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles.

Jacki Riek and Aleksina Jovic were 6-0, 6-1 winners at No. 1 doubles, while Eva Jacobsthal and Isabella Nicoli were 6-0, 6-3 winners at No. 2 doubles. Rachel Kayman and Micki Neidigh were 6-0, 6-0 winners at No. 3 doubles, while Cristina

Timothy Christian girls volleyball team closing in on 20 wins…again

Hitting the 20-win mark has become a commonplace thing for the Timothy Christian girls volleyball program in recent years.

The Trojans once again are encroaching on that standard. Timothy was 19-5 through late last week after opening up play in its first year in the Metro Suburban Conference’s upper division (Red Division).

Timothy defeated Riverside-Brookfield in two and also downed St. Edward in two on the road in Elgin to start MSC Red play 2-0 in the now single-match conference format. The

Trojans have only three more conference contests remaining.

In a 25-14, 25-20 win over R-B, Heidi Westra had seven kills, five assists and two aces, while Lindsay Mahler had four kills and one ace. Maggie Troxel finished with four kills, one ace and five digs. Campbell Marshall had 13 assists, while Hannah Schuringa had five kills. Abygale Ahn had six digs and one ace.

In a 25-19, 27-25 win over St. Edward, Westra had 15 kills and five digs.

Marshall had 16 assists and two aces, while Mahler had three kills. Troxel had two kills and six digs and Ahn had eight digs and one kill.

“We were down in a tight second set 23-20 to St. Edward and won 27-25,” Timothy coach Scott Piersma noted.

“That’s always a good experience for the girls to win a tight one like that.”

Before opening conference play, the Trojans competed in the St. Viator and Manteno tournaments.

“We played very well at St. Viator,” said Piersma. “That’s always a good and strong tournament. We are one of the smallest schools in there with a lot of 3A and some 4A teams.”

Timothy opened St. Viator play with a three-set victory over Class 4A Rolling Meadows and then downed host St. Viator, now a 4A school after a trip

downstate last year, in three as well.

“St. Viator was a very good match,” said Piersma. “They are really good and they didn’t lose much from their state team. It’s good to play a team like that in their own gym.”

Timothy also defeated Elgin Larkin before losing to Bolingbrook in two sets.

“Bolingbrook is a big 4A school with an outside hitter who is going on to play in college,” said Piersma.

“They are a good team, but we didn’t play our best against them.”

That put Timothy in the third-place match against a common St. Viator tournament foe: Mundelein Carmel.

“We always seem to play Carmel there,” said Piersma.

Timothy won the match in three sets.

“We finished 4-1 at St. Viator,” the coach said. “I’m never going to complain about a record like that at that tournament. It was a fun day for us.”

Timothy defeated Wilmington, Beecher and Crete-Monee at the Manteno tournament in pool play.

“Manteno is a little bit different with playing the teams from down south that we don’t normally see,” said Piersma.
