Despite gardening virtues, questions remain about infringement, sustainability

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, there was a meeting of the Elmhurst Zoning and Planning Commission (ZPC) held in City Council Chambers. Attending were Kurt Warnke, Susan McCoyd, Dave Garland, Kevin Byrnes and Chair Susan Rose. A public hearing to consider a text amendment to the City’s Zoning Ordinance was under consideration to provide language to regulate hoop houses, high tunnels, low tunnels and cold frames and to add definitions for greenhouses and conservatories. The issue had appeared before the ZPC previously, but the City Council’s Development Planning & Zoning Committee asked the ZPC to reconsider the application. Rose announced that the session was to hear public feedback, but that Commissioners would not deliberate the issue that night, but would at a future meeting. Rose began by thanking the audience for taking their time to come out to offer their thoughts -- pro or con – on the hoop house issue. “I appreciate your passion, it’s always good to see people get involved
