City approves pedestrian bridge over Route 83 Funding agreement with IDOT passes; grants to cover $2 million of project

At a meeting of the Elmhurst City Council on Monday, Oct. 19, a measure was passed to move forward with a pedestrian/bicycle bridge to be constructed over Route 83 just north of North Avenue.

The Public Works and Building Committee (PWB) presented a recommendation to approve a funding resolution grant request for the Illinois Route 83 Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge Project. The City’s request for funding is related to the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP).

As part of the ITEP grant application, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) requires that any community applying for federal grant funding have funds reserved or appropriated to cover that community’s share of the project costs.

In this case, the City’s share is expected to be $400,000.

Earlier this year, the City received Surface Transportation Project (STP) funding for the project through the DuPage Mayors and Managers Conference (DMMC)

The City is currently in the midst of a Phase I design of the project (preliminary engineering). Phase II, or final engineering, is scheduled to begin in 2022. The current ITEP grant request is for $176,000, which is 80 percent of the Phase II engineering costs.

The committee recommended the approval of the funding agreement with IDOT, and that the City Council suspend the rules to allow approval of the necessary documents to be approved at the same meeting.

The recommendation passed 9-1 with three absent and one vacant seat.

The project’s planned purpose The City’s motive for building the pedestrian/bicycle overpass bridge over Route 83 is to help unify the community and create a non-motorized connection to other communities and adjacent bicycle trails, while providing a safe alternative to an at-grade crossing, deemed too dangerous especially for pedestrians.

Guaranteed Rate of Elmhurst is collecting supplies and providing thousands of care packages and stuffing stockers for local veterans, military and first responders in need this holiday season. Many of these heroes are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and suicide numbers among them have increased since the pandemic started.

John Noldan, executive vice president of mortgage lending at Elmhurst’s Guaranteed Rate, is partnering with Support Over Stigma, an organization created to support active duty military, veterans, first responders and their families.

“If we could show just one person we care and prevent them from hurting themselves, this collection will be a success,” said Noldan. “But we need the community’s help.”

A list of acceptable food and nonfood items, and an Amazon Wishlist link are listed on the organization’s website at SupportOverStigma.org.

Supplies and donations can also be dropped off at Guaranteed Rate’s office at 115 W. Adelaide St. in Elmhurst, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Nov. 11. Volunteers are needed to help box the supplies and get the care packages ready.

Profiles of Candidates for State Representative in District 47 Deanne Mazzochi Incumbent Candidate District 47 About Deanne Mazzochi Born and raised in Villa Park, graduating from Willowbrook High School, Representative Deanne Marie Mazzochi received her undergraduate degree in Political Science and Chemistry (Biology/minor), from Boston University. She received her law degree (with honors) from the George Washington University. She has maintained a lifelong passion for science, and she’s always enthusiastic to use that knowledge in her private sector work.

Deanne moved to Elmhurst to raise her family.

“My husband’s business is in Elmhurst and our two children attend Elmhurst public schools,” she said.

Deanne has built a successful private-sector law business defending people, often times against aggressive, well-funded opponents.

Representative Mazzochi was appointed to the General Assembly in the summer of 2018, and won election to the seat in November of 2018, and her new term began in January of 2019. She has quickly become the independent, reform-minded Legislator she pledged to be in Springfield.

Her committee assignments have taken into account her unique and varied skill sets in science and the law.

Having served four years as a Trustee and Chairman of the College of Du Page Board, her ability to implement reform and restructure large organizational policy preceded her service in the General Assembly.

“I credit my parents, a businessman and a public school teacher for my lifelong commitment to public service.”

Priorities for the 47th District include: Commuter rail.

“Our district depends heavily on Metra for transportation to and from Chicago,” Mazzochi said. “Our train stations are outdated, have accessibility issues, and require more parking in the surrounding areas for commuters. These priorities were critical for me when it came to capital funding programs.”

Public corruption associated with Chicago/Cook County and Springfield.

“Our residents live here because they want safe streets and good schools,” Mazzochi said. “The failure to enforce the criminal laws in Chicago and Cook County has spillover effect into our neighborhoods.

“Corruption created red light cameras in our district that local residents hate. The public corruption makes them despair of a good future in Illinois; and many residents have fled for lower-tax jurisdictions.”

She added that Florida is the number one destination for residents fleeing DuPage County.

has started wreaking havoc in areas of our district, which are pilot sites for installation,” she said. “SB 1451 stripped away critical local control over issues; we need that local decision-making restored, and I have filed two pieces of legislation, HB 4653 and HB 5818 to do just that.”

Other legislative priorities include: ending public corruption; economic recovery and growth; ethics reform; sound fiscal policy.

“Illinois is full of so many people who work hard, and care deeply about their families, friends and communities,” Mazzochi said. “Illinois, with all of its natural advantages, should be a beacon of the Midwest.

It is instead a laughingstock, and the key thing that is holding back more innovation and growth is bad governance.

“If we could at least get serious about showing we are getting back on the right track, more people would be willing to invest their futures here.”

When asked about how Illinois continues to struggle financially and how to solve the problem, Mazzochi said this: “The state’s financial struggles shouldn’t be projected onto Illinois families who are already experiencing their own hardships. The premise of this question features the words, ‘in addition to a progressive state income tax…’ and inherently admits the flawed thinking behind that proposal and any like it.

“Bottom line: we aren’t going to be able to tax our way out of this mess. And trying to do so will only bankrupt this state more quickly; as residents flee from Illinois to surrounding states at an alarming rate – one resident moves out every five minutes.

“Over the last ten years we have lost almost 1 million residents to other states (850,000 to be exact). This is the largest total population loss for any state in the country and is telling about public confidence in our leadership to right the ship.

“In order to meet its bills, budget, and obligations, the leaders of Illinois in the House, Senate, and Governor’s mansion all need to sit down and have an honest discussion of what can and must be cut from our budget and from our regulatory books.

“We must not only reduce our spending but must also reduce the cost of living and doing business in Illinois so that the economy can grow, and our tax revenues can increase through an expansion of the tax base. Before those conversations can happen, people like Madigan and his cronies must step down from their positions and remove themselves from this process. They have perpetuated the system of reckless tax and spend policies over the last 40 years, which has led to them achieving generational wealth at the expense of Illinois families.

“If we want to get serious on financial problems, we must also get serious on corruption; they are two sides of the same coin.”

Jennifer Zordani Candidate for State Representative, District 47 About Jennifer Zordani Jennifer Zordani lives in Clarendon Hills. She was born in Oak Lawn and raised in Burr Ridge, attending Gower Junior High in Burr Ridge and Benet Academy in Lisle for high school.

Jennifer attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. for two years, before transferring to the University of Chicago where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. She also attended Chicago-Kent College of Law, graduating with honors. She has been a practicing regulatory attorney for more than 20 years, and as a lawyer she solves problems and finds solutions.

Jennifer believes in being an accessible and hard-working leader.

“As Illinois State Representative for District 47, I will attend community meetings, be available regularly to meet my neighbors throughout the district and will hold events to inform and assist residents,” Zordani said. “I am committed to addressing the issues that affect our towns and all of Illinois.”

Priority #1: Affordable accessible healthcare “At nearly every income level, people are frustrated by the costs and instability of our healthcare system,” Zordani said. “In Illinois, families are paying too much for their prescription drugs. A lifesaving drug does not save lives when it is unaffordable to the people who need it.

“Senior citizens suffer when they are forced to choose between groceries and prescriptions. Parents suffer when they are forced to work longer hours to pay for their family’s prescriptions. Reining in the costs of prescription drugs is not only necessary, it is long overdue.

“Heroin and opioid drug addiction is a major public health crisis that affects families in our area. I will support legislation that expands access to prevention, treatment and recovery.

Healthcare coverage for addiction recovery should be on par with coverage available for other health conditions.”

Priority #2: Financial stability “It is no secret that Illinois has unfunded pension liabilities that threaten our financial stability,” Zordani said.

“When Illinois operated without a budget, that further destabilized our state’s economy, creating havoc for many people in our state and harming our reputation in the financial markets.

“Illinois now has a decent budget, but legislators must prioritize paying down the state’s debt. It’s hard work, it’s horse trading between politicians and it’s not pretty, but it’s what will keep our state moving forward.

“We have to set goals, long-term and short-term. While we work towards the goals, we’ll gain jobs and economic opportunities for our communities. The financial markets, our residents and businesses will recognize that we are on the right track.

Jennifer is committed to getting our financial house in order.

“Residents agree that Illinois has too many units of local government.

Eliminating or consolidating some of the thousands of taxing bodies can help provide relief for homeowners who face property tax increases year after year.”

Priority #3: Improved public education “Our local public schools provide our children with high quality education, Zordani continued. “Whether it’s Walker Elementary in Clarendon Hills or York High School in Elmhurst, at every level and in every town, our teachers, administrators and support staff help open doors to better futures, higher earnings and new opportunities for our children.

“Maintaining our public school funding is a priority for residents here in our district. I supports policies and funding that keep our public schools strong.

“Every student that seeks higher education should be able to find a path that permits them to achieve a college degree or further career and technical training that is affordable. Most families have to make extra effort to plan for the enormous costs of college, whether it’s working longer or taking fewer vacations.

“Out of control college costs in our state university system have pushed our young residents to out of state schools. Once a student leaves Illinois for another state’s college, we risk losing them as residents of our state.

“Higher education in Illinois should be affordable and competitive so that our young people stay in state. When the college path is the right choice, an Illinois public college should be at the top of the list and the best financial option for our state residents. Improving Illinois colleges and making them affordable to residents will help improve our economy and build for the future.”

Priority #4: Environmental Action “Tackling climate change requires bold initiatives,” she said. “The challenges must be met with innovative solutions and immediate action. Illinois is poised to meet the challenges while at the same time improving infrastructure, growing our economy, providing new jobs and re-training workers. Solutions like the Clean Energy Jobs Act will help Illinois become a leader in wind, solar and clean energy.

“Protecting our residents from pollutants that are invisible killers is a high priority. While we were reading about lead in the water in other communities, ethylene oxide was floating through the air in our own backyards and poisoning families. Grassroots activists fought hard to shut down unsafe facilities.

“Protecting our families for the long term means passing comprehensive legislation to move these facilities away from populated areas and better monitoring the emissions.”

DuPage County notes high voter turnout More than 25% of registered voters have already cast ballots

More than one-quarter of DuPage County’s voters have cast ballots for the 2020 General Election. The combination of 69,499 early voting location voters and 107,018 mail voters totaled 176,516 as of 7:24 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, surpassing 27 percent turnout.

“Nationwide, high voter turnout has been predicted for months,” County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek said.

“It appears that the numbers in DuPage are reflecting that prediction, despite the ongoing pandemic. In terms of ballots cast, we’re already heading quickly toward the halfway point of 2016 final turnout – 434,050 – 12 days from Election Day.” DuPage County is entering the 2020 General Election with 644,796 registered voters. Nearly 45,000 voters have registered within the past year.

Historic comparisons for the same day in 2018 – 6,218; 2016 – 7,809; 2012 – 5,138; and 2008 – 2,956.

“We’re continuing to see daily records at expanded early voting compared with previous elections,” Kaczmarek said. “The average has been over 13,000 daily this week.”

The busiest early voting site – the County Fairgrounds – is also the largest; lines have been short last week Kaczmarek said. The Fairgrounds site offers both paper ballots and touchscreen voting.

The County Clerk’s office increased the number of Early Voting sites by 50 percent since the primary.

DuPage citizens who have not registered to vote may do so at Early Voting locations and Election Day polling places, with the required two forms of identification.

“I recommend voters needing to register to vote do so at an Early Voting location as soon as possible to avoid long lines closer to Election Day,” she said.

Kaczmarek urges voters who have received their mail ballots to complete and return them as soon as possible. Voters may return voted mail ballots via the following options: a

USPS mailbox, no postage required; the DuPage County Clerk Election Division office; drop boxes located at the south parking lot and main entrance of the Jack T. Knuepfer

Administration Building, 421 County Farm Road, Wheaton; or at drop boxes located at any DuPage County Early Voting location or Election Day polling place.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, damage to property, disturbance Oct. 20 A victim in the 900 block of Hillside told police at around 2:01 p.m. that the suspect had been issued a no-trespass notice. On the above date, she was in front of the victim’s residence cursing at her. When asked if she was swearing in front of her neighbor’s house, the suspect denied it.

Oct. 18 Michael Doherty, 24, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct-befouling property for allegedly having urinated in public in the 400 block of S. York at around 3:48 a.m.

Oct. 16 Police said that subsequent to a road rage incident near S. Route 83 and W. St. Charles at around 8:37 p.m., the victim stated the suspect identified himself as a police officer and attempted to grab the victim. The reporting officer made contact with the suspect who admitted to walking over to the victim’s vehicle but denied having physical contact with the victim and identifying himself as a police officer. The victim did not wish to sign complaints.

Police said officers observed a stolen vehicle in an intersection near W. St. Charles and S. Route 83 at around 11:37 p.m. and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle was found to have been stolen out of Chicago. The offending vehicle fled from officers but was later located, unoccupied, in a hotel parking lot in Lombard. The Chicago Police Department was notified. This case is pending investigation.

DUI, DUI-drugs, possession of alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor Oct. 18 Mariana Gonzalez, 36, of Chicago, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, improper lighting and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Clinton and North at around 1:11 a.m.

Oct. 17 Miroslaw Kowkalkowski, 41, of Burbank, was charged with DUI, illegal transportation of open alcohol and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near N. County Line and E. Grand at around 1:22 a.m.

Stephen Lacy, 25, of Clarendon Hills, was charged with DUI, possession of adult use cannabis by the driver, injuring property, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, no valid driver’s license and improper lane usage subsequent to a single vehicle crash in the 300 block of E. Church at around 3:35 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop

driving while license suspended and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near S. York and E. Roosevelt at around 1 p.m.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance CALL 800-222-TIPS near Crescent and Mitchell at around 11:58 p.m., a juvenile suspect was found to be under the age of 21 and had consumed alcohol.

The suspect was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, speeding, squealing tires and no insurance and was released on bond to his parents.

Oct. 16 Alex Mejia-Garcia, 19, of Addison, was charged with DUI, consumption of alcohol by a minor, depositing injurious material on the highway, possession of tobacco by a person under 21 and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near W. Lake and Route 83 at around 1:18 a.m.

Vesmo Hanks, 22, of Villa Park, was charged with DUI-drugs, illegal possession of cannabis by the driver, driving while license suspended and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and W. North at around 5:24 a.m.

Oct. 15 Police said that subsequent to a single vehicle crash near W. Lake and Route 83 at around 1:18 a.m., a juvenile suspect was found to be driving under the influence. The suspect was charged with DUI and leaving the roadway.

Fleeing, eluding Oct. 20 While on patrol near Roosevelt and I-290 at around 6:30 p.m., a reporting officer observed a suspect’s vehicle commit several driving infractions and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect fled the area at a high rate of speed. An ISPERN message was broadcasted.

The unoccupied vehicle was located and was towed for investigative purposes.

Oct. 18 While on patrol, officers observed a vehicle near Marion and Kenmore at around 5:40 a.m. which had been reported stolen. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the suspected vehicle fled the area at a high rate of speed. An ISPERN message was broadcast.

Harassment, threats Oct. 17 Police said a reporting officer met with a complainant in the 100 block of S. Prospect who stated he was contacted via social media by an unknown female suspect who asked him for explicit photos of himself. The victim stated after he sent her the photos, the unknown suspect threatened to share the photos. The complainant has blocked all communication with the suspect and deleted the messages.

Oct. 20 Nelson Mojica, 43, of Chicago, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued citations for unlawful possession of cannabis in a vehicle near North and I-290 at around 2:11 a.m.

Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop, Suspect 1 was found to not have a valid driver’s license and in possession of a controlled substance. Juvenile offender was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia, a nicotine product, and was in violation of curfew. Suspect 1 and a juvenile suspect were taken into custody and were transported to the police station. Suspect 1 was released without charges, pending lab results. The juvenile suspect was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of nicotine by a minor, curfew violation and no seat belt.

Oct. 17 Martin Adzhyan, 33, of Bolingbrook, was charged with unlawful possession of adult use cannabis in a vehicle, driving while license suspended, speeding, no seat belt and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near W. North and S. Addison at around 6:20 p.m.

Phillip Harrell, 28, of Broadview, was issued citations for possession of cannabis in a vehicle and used of cannabis in a vehicle, while Alicia Allen, 20, of Bellwood, a passenger in the vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in a vehicle subsequent to a traffic stop near W. North and N. Route 83 at around 9:11 p.m.

Anthony Simmons, 35, of Villa Park, was issued citations for unlawful possession of medical cannabis in a vehicle, no seat belt and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near W. North and N. Highland at around 7:56 p.m.

Suspicious circumstances Oct. 19 A complainant near Adell and Adelaide told police at around 8:13 a.m. that he observed a subject sitting in his vehicle in undershorts and looking through binoculars. The reporting officer located the subject’s unoccupied vehicle. No binoculars were observed inside the vehicle. The subject is known to the reporting officer as a local resident who normally wears running shorts while outside.

A complainant in the 500 block of Hillcrest told police at around 2 p.m. that her young son answered the door and an unknown suspect entered her residence. When an adult family member entered the room, the suspect handed him a Walgreen’s bag containing bananas, stated she brought bananas from Costco, and left the residence in an unknown direction.

Route 83 at around 5:10 p.m. Police said officers responded for the report of a vehicle crash and located an unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot with heavy damage. Upon further investigation, the vehicle was found to be reported stolen out of Schaumburg, according to police.

Theft by deception was reported in the 900 block of S. Kent at around 8:28 p.m. A victim told police that he received a notification on his computer advising he contact a phone number claiming to be for Microsoft. The victim called the number provided and spoke to an unknown suspect by the name of “Shawn.” The suspect gained access to the victim’s computer including his personal information and requested the victim purchase several gift cards. The victim purchased the gift cards and provided suspect with the card numbers. The victim then provided the suspect with his banking information; however, no money was withdrawn from the accounts.

Theft was reported in the 200 block of N. York at around 6:40 p.m. A victim told police that he inadvertently left his wallet at the register after paying for his meal at a restaurant. The victim left the establishment but later returned after realizing his wallet was missing. The victim returned to the establishment where an employee stated his wallet was found and returned to them; however, the victim stated cash was missing from the wallet. This case is pending investigation.

Oct. 19-Oct. 20 Theft of vehicle parts was reported at a car dealership in the 200 block of W. Grand. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed four tires and rims from a 2021 Honda Insight sedan which was parked in the southwest corner of the dealership’s remote lot sometime between the above dates.

Oct. 18 Theft of vehicle parts was reported at a car dealership in the 900 block of Oaklawn at around 8:18 a.m. On the south edge of the overflow parking lot, an officer discovered two 2021 Acura RDX crossover SUVs that were missing tires and rims. The vehicles were parked next to each other and the adjacent sides of each vehicle were found to be up on jacks.

Theft was reported in the 300 block of W. Lake at around 3:49 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect stole cash from her purse after she left the purse unattended in the bathroom. Investigation pending further review of the security footage.

Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 300 block of May at around 12:29 p.m. A complainant located several casino cards scattered on her neighbor’s driveway. An unknown suspect entered the victim’s unlocked Subaru Outback and stole the victim’s wallet. An unlocked 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee parked in the victim’s driveway was also entered by the suspect.

Oct. 17 Identity theft was reported in near Elm Creek Drive at around 12:28 p.m. A victim told police that she received a phone call from a collection agency in reference to a debt. The collection agency advised the debt was a result of a TMobile account which the victim did not open. The victim contacted her bank and reported the fraud.

Oct. 15 Victor L. Thigpen, 63, of Chicago, was charged with three counts of identity theft in the 200 block of E. North.

Police said a victim stated that Thigpen entered her home on June 29 without authorization and stole cash, credit cards and other property. According to police, Thigpen made unauthorized charges on the victim’s credit cards.

Attempted residential burglary was reported in the 200 block of E. Forest at around 12:01 a.m. According to police, a reporting officer met with the complainant who stated she discovered pry marks on the rear sliding door to the residence. The complainant said no entry was made to the residence. This case is pending investigation.

EEHealth: How to safely celebrate Halloween during a pandemic After all the things people avoided through the summer — sitting towel-to-towel on a sunny beach, vacations, concerts, visiting extended family — it seems unfair to now have to avoid the usual fun of Halloween.

But with the virus that causes COVID-19 circulating, it’s just not safe to crowd into a cramped haunted house and scream with friends.

The same is true for big indoor parties — basically anyplace large groups of people will be spending time indoors talking, laughing and shouting isn’t safe during the pandemic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released guidelines for safe holiday celebrations, and listed these Halloween activities as higher-risk for spreading viruses: • Participating in traditional trickor-treating where treats are handed to children who go door to door • Having trunk-or-treat where treats are handed out from trunks of cars lined up in large parking lots • Attending crowded costume parties held indoors • Going to an indoor haunted house where people may be crowded together and screaming • Going on hayrides or tractor rides with people who are not in your household • Using alcohol or drugs, which can cloud judgement and increase risky behaviors • Traveling to a rural fall festival in a different community if you are coming from an area with community spread of COVID-19 But all is not lost. There are ways to do fun Halloween things (including trick-or-treating) in a safe way: • Have a Halloween party at home.

Decorate to the hilt and let kids stay up to watch a Halloween movie with

some special treats.

• Carve pumpkins. Roast the seeds, too.

• Try alternatives to trick-or-treating, such as a glow-in-the-dark egg hunt, hanging packages of candy on a tree or fence to be “picked,” or setting up a table in the front yard laden with individual cups filled with candy for trickor-treaters to take.

• Participate in an outdoor Halloween parade and show off your costume.

• “Boo” someone! Leave a bag of treats or a pumpkin on a friend’s doorstep after dark, ring the bell and run.

• Set up a Halloween scavenger hunt in and around the house for the people in your household.

If Halloween plans include a party or taking the kids trick-or-treating, remember these important safety guidelines: • Maintain physical distance from people outside your household.

• Don’t substitute a costume mask for a cloth mask. Unless the costume mask is made of two or more layers of fabric and fits snugly around your mouth and nose, wear a cloth mask instead. Don’t wear a cloth mask under a costume mask, as this may make it hard to breathe.

• Frequently wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water isn’t available, use hand sanitizer.

• If an individual has COVID-19 or has been exposed to someone with a confirmed case of COVID-19, they should not participate in in-person activities or hand out candy to trick-ortreaters.

• Outdoor celebrations are safer than indoor, particularly enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces.

Trusty travel bag weathers the storms of life’s adventures It’s good to have the necessities when traveling. For some families that might mean Doritos and a good cheese dip, or maybe carrots and low fat-ranch.

When my family travels, we always carry one staple with us — the blue toiletries bag. It holds everything we need for any toiletrytype situation and then some.

Toothbrushes and toothpaste. A brush and comb. Hairspray and gel.

Deodorant. Lotion. Q-tips. Nail file.

Eye drops. Tweezers. Shaver. Wet wipes. Cologne. A corkscrew.

My husband brought the blue toiletries bag into our marriage, but it originated with me. I made it for him in preparation for a trip he took to Europe before we were married.

Back when we were “just” best friends.

Still are, but we’ve progressed from there. Let’s just leave it at that.

The blue toiletries bag has been a staple in our lives ever since.

In the month after graduating from college, he told me he needed a waterproof bag for his upcoming trip, but didn’t know where he could purchase one. I told him I could sew something. We shopped for the fabric during a horrendous storm. We saw a tornado in the horizon, looming, but continued shopping as naive and immortal barely-20-somethings might do.

I showed him various options. He chose a blue waterproof fabric.

Terrible. It made us pause. But we were young. I had a bag to sew. He had a plane to catch and an adventure to experience.

Off he went to Europe.

Happily for me, he returned in three months with the blue toiletries bag and our growing relationship both intact. Little did we know the bag (and the concept of we) were to become permanent staples in our lives.

As newlyweds, we brought the blue bag to our honeymoon in Las Vegas. We had two toothbrushes and lots of cologne. We forgot deodorant and Q-tips because we were married but not quite full-fledged adults. I remember it rained just one day of our trip. Pretty mild on the storm ledger.

With time, we fully outfitted the bag with all the things needed for a week or weekend away. All we needed to do was grab it and go.

It was beyond handy. We felt very prepared, and adult.

We had our first child and added a toothbrush, and then another, and another and so on. Each one had its

own plastic bag — tidy and germfree Our trips to Las Vegas were replaced by vacations to Disney.

In addition to toothbrushes we added sunscreen and baby fingernail clippers. There were many years we vacationed with a double stroller – until we blew the wheels out during a horrendous rainstorm. We survived; the stroller did not.

This year, we brought our youngest son to college not long before the barrage of Hurricane Sally. Later, we were in the area again for Delta.

Storms can be devastating when you find yourself in the midst of the eye.

Much like the tornado we encountered in our early days of the blue toiletries bag, we dodged the hurricanes that nearly came our way this year. Back then, we were young and didn’t realize the dogged dodging we’d done. This time we do.

We dodged a storm. And we are thankful and happy — for storms and the ability to escape them, for history and family and vacations and everything in between. For our blue toiletries bag and all that it stands for and the cement it brings to our family.

Sometimes it’s the little things. For us one of those little things just might be blue — and waterproof.

Thanks to School District 205, the Elmhurst Independent has the honor of bringing its readers the bios and photos of this year’s Dukes of Distinction. This week, we feature Martha Garman VanGeem of the class of 1972.

Martha Garman VanGeem​ , Class of 1972 - Martha Garman VanGeem was one of the first 25 women to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Illinois, where she graduated with high honors in 1976.

She ​is a licensed engineer (IL) with more than 40 years of consulting experience and has had her own consulting firm for the last nine years.

She serves as a specialized technical consultant in the areas of building science, building materials, green/ sustainable/resilient buildings and infrastructure, energy use in buildings, and building codes. She is a national expert on concrete energy-efficiency and sustainability-related properties.

She represents the U.S. on several international ISO standards committees and holds leadership roles on many energy-efficiency and green-building standard-writing committees, ​including those within ASHRAE and ASTM. She strives to find consensus in creating codes and standards that are technically-based and impactful, yet realistic and usable so that they will be adopted by countries, states, and cities. She has authored more than 120 articles and published reports.

Among her awards are the 2013 ASHRAE Standards Achievement Award and the 2018 Concrete Sustainability Award from the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

(Reprinted with permission from The First Ladies of Elmhurst: Prominent Women of the Twentieth Century, the Independent has obtained permission from the Elmhurst History Museum to print stories from the book, published in 2001, recalling the outstanding women who have helped form our community. This week, we bring you Mary Creighton.

Some portions have been edited.)

Mary Creighton is lovingly remembered as the one and only Elmhurst Public Health Nurse. She was first employed by the City on February 23, 1930 and faithfully performed her work in that capacity for the next 33 years. Mary initiated and coordinated all the health care programs for the community and the Elmhurst public and parochial schools.

In 1963, however, Elmhurst became the last DuPage County town to finally abolish the position.

By this time most of the local schools had started their own health systems by adding a school nurse to their staffs. On behalf of Mary Creighton, Mayor Charles Weigel sent a letter to the DuPage County Health Department regarding the abolishment of Elmhurst’s health department. The Mayor was assured

by DuPage officials that they would hire Mary Creighton if she wished to work for DuPage County. Instead Mary chose to retire in 1963 as the City’s Public Health Nurse, but she continued as the Elmhurst Police Matron. Mary had been commissioned as matron in 1957. For years while Public Health Nurse, she had worked closely with the police department. She continued serving the community for the next fifteen years as the only Matron the police department ever hired.

Mary Caroline was born on October 12, 1897 in Lancaster, Ohio. Her parents were Mina Leah (Walker)

and Michael Hankison. She was the oldest of seven girls. After moving to Chicago Heights, Mary graduated from West Suburban Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1922. She served as a private nurse for eight years. Mary married William F. Creighton in 1928 and the couple moved to 253 E. St. Charles Road in Elmhurst. After William’s death, she moved to 149 Elm Avenue. In the mid-60s, Mary lived in an apartment building at 148 Schiller Street.

Raymond Rumps, an officer with the Elmhurst Police Department from 1947 to 1963, recalled working with Mary when the station was located at 116 Schiller Street.

“Mary Creighton was a good worker and a very helpful nurse,” Sergeant Rumps fondly recalled.

“She helped everybody, especially children and older people. She took care of people in the community who were poor and couldn’t afford to go to a doctor. She was just a good woman!”

Mary visited the indigent and homebound on a regular basis. She was continually aware (starting way back during the Great Depression) of the many Elmhurst families who needed food and clothing. Her heart especially went out to the children in such circumstances. Perhaps that was because she and her husband had no children of their own. Mary personally would collect toys and clothes so that the children would have gifts at Christmas. She energetically gathered and distributed food to the needy all through the year, but particularly during the holidays.

Mary’s heroic efforts eventually evolved into an organization called the United Community Concerns Association. Although she didn’t live to see its official title, the UCCA still delivers baskets of canned goods and gift certificates three times a year to Elmhurst residents and senior citizens. Many Elmhurst clubs, churches and citizens continue this spirit of giving in Mary’s memory.

Mary Creighton also initiated

the Infant Welfare Clinic, but later changed the name to the Well Baby Clinic, working with volunteers from the Elmhurst Woman’s Club to promote preventive medical methods of baby care. Countless babies were regularly checked and their parents counseled.

Available at all hours of the day and night, Mary Creighton was a valuable resource for the City of Elmhurst for many years. In 1970 she was named Citizen of the Week by the Elmhurst Press for “unselfish devotion to a job which has become her life.” The American Legion THB Post 187 honored Mary at their annual Recognition Night in 1974. Many other awards came from the Lions Club, the Kiwanis Club, York Township and the Elmhurst Police Department. Mary was a life member of the West Suburban Police Women’s Association and served twice as President of the DuPage Public Health Nurses. She died in 1977 and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Lancaster, Ohio.

Early voting continues to shatter records

Montini Catholic High School recently recognized 10 freshmen who are recipients of Montini Catholic’s Freshman Placement Exam Scholarships. Among them was Elmhurst resident Sam Hemmersmeier, who attended Visitation Catholic School.

The award is renewable as long as the student meets the renewable criteria each year.

Amid a new surge in COVID-19 cases, voters in Illinois and across the nation are shattering records for early voting.

As of Oct. 23, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections, more than 1.8 million voters had already cast their ballots for the Nov. 3 general election. Nationally, the U.S. Elections Project at the University of Florida estimates that 50 million Americans have already voted.

In a normal election year, a large number of early votes would be seen as an indicator of high interest in the races and a predictor of overall high voter turnout.

But because of the pandemic, 2020 is turning out to be a year like no other, and one local analyst cautions observers not to read too much into the numbers—at least not yet.

“I’m willing to say I don’t know what it means yet, and we’re going to be looking closely at the final returns,” Brian Gaines, a political science professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, said during an interview for a Capitol News Illinois podcast. “If I have to guess right now, I’d say, first of all, it was a success for—there was a deliberate effort to nudge people towards voting by mail, a little bit less to vote early, to reduce lines on Election Day.” During the pandemic-shortened legislative session in May, Illinois lawmakers passed a bill requiring local election officials to send out

mail ballot request forms to nearly every voter in Illinois. More than 2.3 million Illinois voters returned those forms, according to state election officials, and as of Friday, with 11 days remaining before the election, slightly more than 1 million, or 45 percent, had returned those ballots.

The new law, which applies to only the 2020 election, also allowed voting jurisdictions to provide secure drop boxes so voters could turn in their ballots personally rather than relying on the U.S. Postal Service to deliver them.

“So, the state took an intermediate path,” Gaines said. “Some states shifted to an all-mail election, joining the handful that already did that.

And more typical was just to make it a little bit easier to vote by mail.

Illinois was kind of in that category.

We can still vote early, by mail (or) on Election Day in person.”

One of the questions on many people’s minds, Gaines said, is whether the people who are voting by mail or in person at early voting locations are people who otherwise wouldn’t have voted at all. He said he believes that’s unlikely and that the early votes will more likely result in fewer people voting in person on Election Day. “But before I put all my chips in that hat and say it’s definitely not going to be a surge in turnout, it’s such a weird year that I think past precedent isn’t going to help us in lots of ways,” Gaines said. “So I think it’s mostly people who would

have been voting on Election Day, they’re going early instead. But if it turns out in the end that the turnout really is up, then I’ll have to go back and eat those words and say, OK, it was actually more than that, it was getting in people who otherwise might not have voted.”

Gaines has published research on early voting—what some political scientists call “convenience voting”—and he said there are advantages and disadvantages to it.

The advantage, he said, is that it makes voting more accessible to many people, especially the elderly and disabled who would have a hard time getting to a polling place. But Illinois allows “no-excuse” early voting, meaning voters do not have to demonstrate they are unable to vote on Election Day or that they will be out of town. Any voter is allowed to ask for an advance ballot.

The big disadvantage, he said, is it makes someone’s vote less secret.

“A ballot that you cast wherever you want to cast it—it’s been mailed to you, you cast it at home, you cast it at work, sitting in Starbucks – can be secret if you choose to make it secret, but the inherent secrecy of the privacy of a booth is gone. And that’s led to a very noisy but not terribly factual debate about whether there’s a huge amount of fraud, tiny amount of fraud, no fraud whatsoever.”

Gaines said he is not one who believes that voting by mail is fraught with large amounts of fraud, and he said the chances of a mail-in ballot

being rejected for technical reasons are slim.

According to information from the website Ballotpedia, the most common reason mail ballots get rejected is that they don’t arrive on time. Other common reasons include the voter failing to sign the envelope or the voter’s signature doesn’t match the signature on file in their voter registration records.

In Illinois, the new law requires that the each election jurisdiction create panels of three election judges consisting of no more than two from the same party to process voteby-mail ballots. That’s an increase from one election judge under previous laws.

A spokesperson for the Illinois State Board of Elections told Capitol News Illinois in an email earlier this month that election authorities keep track of party affiliation in their poll worker recruitment efforts in order to keep proper staffing at polling places and fulfill such requirements.

Per the new law, all three judges on the panel must reject a ballot for it not to be tabulated.

The judges handle every incoming mail ballot just as they hand out every ballot and check every signature at an early voting location or Election Day polling, the spokesperson said in the email.

In Illinois, according to the website, nearly 6,000 mail ballots, or 1.1 percent of the total, were rejected in the 2016 election. That rose to 2.2 percent in the 2018 election.

Hynes said IDES worked “under incredible stress” to pay out a staggering $14.2 billion in benefits to 2.1 million Illinois claimants from March through August.

Pritzker this summer named Kristin Richards, a former chief of staff to two Democratic state senate presidents, the new acting director at IDES. “More so than anything, I feel a responsibility to try and bring some stability for claimants, find some stability for people that are attempting to reach us,” Richards said.

From best to worst Before the pandemic, Illinois had been paying about 80 percent of initial unemployment claims within seven days.

That quick payout rate plummeted to around 1 percent and held there through September, putting Illinois last among states on this timeliness measure, according to new data from the federal labor department.

IDES told the BGA these quick payments slowed because Illinois— like many states—waited one week before starting the clock prior to the pandemic.

After the crisis, Illinois and 36

other states cut out the “waiting week” in an effort to get more money out quickly. But agency officials offered no explanation why Illinois performed so much worse than all other states, including those that waived the waiting week.

Federal guidelines require states to pay out nearly 90 percent of all initial unemployment checks within 21 days. On that 21-day measure Illinois also fell short by distributing only 61 percent, but still performed better than most states.

Still, every day matters to laid-off Illinois workers, said Richards, the IDES acting director.

“There is no standard for seven days,” Richards said. “I agree with you it is important to claimants. Every day is important to claimants.”

‘This is not good’ Illinois was first among states to begin paying out the initial $600-perweek Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation payments on April 6, records show.

But that early success quickly became a footnote as IDES was overwhelmed with 519,269 new claims for regular unemployment benefits that month—more than 10 previous Aprils combined — and federal authorities poured $500 billion in crisis relief into an alphabet soup of new and existing programs for laid-off workers.

Illinois became the 44th state to apply for the $300-per-week “Lost Wage Assistance” benefit: While most states deployed that program in

August, Illinois did not start making payments until Sept. 4, records show.

It was not among the 27 states that offered workers partial benefits when their employers reduced hours instead of laying them off.

IDES told the Senate Oversight Panel in August it decided against that benefit because its staff was “stretched thin.” Illinois also trailed all but seven states in processing the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance to independent contractors and “gig workers.”

Illinois did not begin processing PUA payments until May 11, and didn’t start paying until a week later.

Government emails detail the pressure inside IDES as Illinois’ PUA program was rolled out.

“Folks, I am counting on you to launch the independent contractor unemployment system ASAP and no later than May 11,” Pritzker wrote to then-IDES Acting Director Thomas Chan and Hynes at 7:43 a.m. on May 4. “Can you confirm that will happen? JB.” IDES hustled to update its policies and computer code, and minutes before midnight on May 10 Chan emailed Hynes that he did a test run by filing a small sample of claims.

“Minor hiccups but no show stoppers,” Chan wrote.

Within minutes of Illinois’ PUA system going live the next morning, Hynes conducted his own test.

An automated voice told Hynes there was a high volume of calls, then hung up on him, Hynes emailed.

“It’s not even 830,” Hynes wrote. “This is not good.”

Front of the line Amid the chaos, IDES fell so far behind in processing claims that it triaged cases by prioritizing people referred by local politicians, the BGA found.

In a June 5 report to the bipartisan Senate oversight panel, IDES responded to questions about the lack of uniformity in how unemployment claims are handled.

“Claimants continue to call IDES in addition to their elected officials,” the report said. “Therefore, often, even though we move an elected official’s constituent to the front of the line, the constituent has often already been able to get through to the call center.

“We will continue to pull our staff out of the call center to call claimants sent to us by an elected official,” that report added.

In an email to the BGA, Pritzker spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh called the IDES practice of responding to claims referred by elected officials “an attempt for the Department and its employees to help as many people as possible at a time when there was no structure in place.”

Staffing levels hit ‘all-time low’ Illinois’ struggle to roll out the new federal benefits came amid staffing shortfalls at every level of IDES. Chan was a placeholder pending the governor’s merger plans. And there were months-long vacancies in the deputy director and audit positions.

On March 14, 2020—as Pritzker was closing Illinois schools and limiting gatherings to no more than 50 people—Chan sent Hynes an ur-

gent email: “I need permission to fill IDES’ Chief Operating Officer position as soon as possible,” Chan wrote.

“Please know that I’m doing everything in my power to get you what is needed. But I need some help.”

Beyond leadership vacancies, rank-and-file numbers also were dropping.

Under Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, the agency headcount plummeted from almost 2,000 to around 1,300 when Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner took over in 2015. By this April, that number had slipped to 1,041.

What’s more, experience had been drained from the agency.

Managers “are serving in multiple roles and performing the work of multiple employees,” Chan added.

A Christmas tree on fire Illinois’ difficulties were reflected in score cards required by the federal labor department, which ranks states for the promptness of payments, the effectiveness of audits and other agency functions.

States indicate adequate performance or something less by labeling each part of reports with a green or red mark. IDES veterans call this chart “the Christmas tree.”

Asked for the state’s scorecard data through June, Pritzker administration officials declined: “The Christmas tree is a document put together for internal purposes only and is not available for public consumption,” IDES spokeswoman Rebecca Cisco told the BGA in an email.

The BGA, however, obtained a copy of that report. It shows Illinois failed five of 10 performance measures.

York girls tennis team finishes second at sectional Nikoleit takes third in singles division; Finishes tied for fourth on all-time York wins list

The York girls tennis team wrapped up its 2020 COVID-19-shortened season with a second-place showing at the recent Class 2A Lyons Township sectional.

York ended with 11 points. Hinsdale Central easily won the sectional title with 26 points. Due to the ongoing pandemic the IHSA only held a sectional round for the postseason.

There are no state tournaments for any fall sports this year.

Individually, York senior Gianna Nikoleit finished third at the sectional, which would have qualified her for the state tournament for a third year in a row.

Nikoleit won her opening match 6-2, 6-1, won her second match 6-1, 6-3 and then lost in the semifinals 7-5, 6-1 before coming back to defeat a Hinsdale Central player 6-3, 6-2 for third place. Nikoleit earned all-sectional honors for a third year in a row.

Gianna ended her high school career with a fantastic tournament,” York coach Tres Heimann said.

“She played a great match against Nicole Hu from Hinsdale Central in the semifinals, pushing her to 7-5, 6-1. Gianna had several set points in the first set where Nicole came up with some big shots at key moments, but Gianna was right there.

Gianna played very consistent tennis throughout the entire tournament.”

Nikoleit ended her season with a 13-6 record and notched the most wins on the team. She ended her York career with a 102-36 mark, which ties her for fourth place on the program’s all-time wins list.

“It is safe to say if the season’s schedule was not shortened by COVID-19, Gianna would have broken the all-time singles record at York,” Heimann said. “Gianna represented very well over her four years in the program.”

At the sectional, York finished ahead of fellow West Suburban Conference schools such as Lyons, Downers Grove South, Hinsdale South and Downers Grove North.

Also at the sectional, Amelia Karr went 1-1 in the singles action. She won her first match and then lost to Hinsdale Central.

Morgan Burnham and Sasha Neidigh won their first match in the doubles tournament and then lost to Lyons Township 6-3, 7-6 (6) in the quarterfinals.

Isabel Brown and Vivian Brunke lost in the first round of the doubles tournament.

Nikoleit led the team with a 13-6 record. Maddie Jeffery was 12-1, while Clare Hewitt finished with a 12-3 record and Neidigh was 12-4.

Karr finished at 12-5. Brown and Brunke finished with 9-7 records and Burnham was 9-9.

Earlier, York was third at the WSC Silver tournament. York finished with 26 points and was only three points behind second-place Glenbard West. Hinsdale Central won the conference tournament.

The Dukes had all-conference performers in four of the seven flights with Nikoleit earning all-conference honors for a third year in a row.

Nikoleit was third at No. 1 singles.

She won her first match 6-0, 6-2, lost to Hu 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals and then defeated Downers Grove North 6-2, 6-0 in the third-place contest.

Karr also was third at No. 2 singles. She won her first match 6-2, 6-2, lost to Hinsdale Central 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals and defeated Downers Grove North 6-0, 6-0 in the thirdplace match.

Neidigh was second at No. 3 singles. She won her semifinals match 6-2, 6-1 after receiving a bye. Neidigh lost 6-3, 6-2 to Hinsdale Central in the title match.

Burnham and Duhig were fourth at No. 1 doubles. They won their opener 6-1, 6-4, lost in the semifinals to Hinsdale Central and dropped a three-set match to Lyons Township in the third-place match.

Brown and Brunke finished fifth at No. 2 doubles. They lost their opener and then received a bye into the fifthplace match where they defeated Downers Grove North 6-3, 6-2.

Zoe Burkhardt and Gabby Felder took fourth at No. 3 doubles. They won their opener 6-4, 6-3, lost to Hinsdale Central in the semifinals and lost to Lyons Township in the third-place match.

Hewitt and Jeffery took second at No. 4 doubles. They won their semifinal match 6-3, 6-2 over Oak Park-River Forest and lost 6-3, 6-4 to Hinsdale Central in the championship match.

Nikoleit, Karr, Neidigh and the Hewitt-Jeffery team earned all-WSC Silver honors.

Timothy Christian girls tennis team records near perfect season

The Timothy Christian girls tennis team got about as close to perfect as humanly possible this fall.

The Trojans finished the season with a 16-0-1 dual-meet record and went 4-0 in Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division duals. Timothy then won the MSC Blue tournament title (and overall conference title) and a Class 1A sectional title. Timothy’s only non-win this season was a 3-3 tie in late August against Glenbard North at the Timothy quad, which the Trojans still won thanks to a pair of 5-1 wins.

The Trojans had eight 5-0 dual wins to their credit this year and also ripped through the Metro Suburban Blue conference tournament with conference champions at all five flights. The team also had six more duals where the opponent won only one match.

At its own Class 1A Timothy Christian sectional sectional, Cassandra Lee won the individual sectional title, while Crystina Lee and Clarissa Chen won the sectional doubles title. Alexa Yelenosky and Sarah Carstensen finished second in doubles. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the IHSA held only a sectional round for girls tennis.

There is no state tournament this year.

For the season, Clarissa Chen went undefeated at 21-0. Cassandra Lee went 22-1, while Crystina Lee went 211. Yelenosky went 21-1 as well, while

Carstensen finished with a 20-1 mark.

Maddie Drye had a 15-1 record, while Georgia Wells went 16-2. Bella Tornabene went 14-3. Kate Carpenter had a 10-5 mark while Kiana Morissey had a 10-6 record.

“Winning close matches was the key to closing out a near-perfect season,” said Timothy Christian coach Keith Mills. “We constantly came through in close matches. We also played our best tennis at the end of the season.”

Mills said his players’ attitudes carried the day during challenging times this fall. “What impressed me the most was resilience despite the COVID presence,” he said. “The positive attitude was maintained even though we lost all our tournaments (canceled due to the pandemic) and also a chance for a long run at the state tournament (no state tournament this year). There is a lot of gratitude for being able to play.

We are very thankful.”

Mills added it would be impossible to single out two or three players in terms of spearheading the team’s success. “The list is too long,” he said. “It was everyone, really. Just look at their records.”

Of note, Cassandra Lee finished her Timothy Christian career as the all-time record holder for wins for either a boys or girls tennis player at the school. She leaves Timothy with a 129-11 record.”

The sectional title was Timothy’s second all-time. The Trojans won their

first in 2015. Timothy finished with 32 points at the sectional. Nazareth Academy and Fenwick were a distant second with 19 points each.

Cassandra Lee won her first three matches in the sectional tournament by 6-0, 6-0 scores and then defeated Kate Trifilio of Fenwick 6-2, 6-2 for the title.

Crystina Lee and Chen, both ninth-graders, won their first two doubles matches 6-0, 6-0, won their semifinal contest 6-1, 7-5 and then defeated compatriots Yelenosky and Carstensen 6-3, 6-4 for the title.

Yelenosky and Carstensen won their first two matches 6-0, 6-0 and won the semifinal 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 before facing their freshmen teammates in the finale.

At the MSC Blue tournament, Cassandra Lee was the No. 1 singles champion, Clarissa Chen won the No. 2 title.

Crystina Lee and Carstensen won the No. 1 doubles title, while Yelenosky and Wells won the No. 2 doubles title.

Drye and Tornabene won the No. 3 doubles crown. Timothy players went 10-0 in matches and 20-1 in sets at the conference tournament.

In terms of the future, Mills sees even more success. “Despite losing Cassie Lee and several seniors, we return a strong core,” he said. “Four of our top six return, and we had one of our best JV teams ever to fill the open spots. I would think we would be a contender for the MSC and sectional titles again.”

As far as the future, Stopka wants York competing at a high level on a consistent basis. “The short-term goal is to restock and build up the team,” he said. “A large portion of last year’s team was seniors, especially the starting 11. We have to make sure the now juniors are up to the speed of the varsity level and are ready to contribute. We want to keep that pipeline going with the younger groups of players. We want to make sure we are not only competitive, but that we are competing for regionals, sectionals and supersectionals.

York girls cross country team wins regional title IC Catholic Prep girls cross country team wins 1A regional crown

The York girls cross country team continued its fine season by winning the recent Class 3A Proviso West regional title on the 3.06-mile layout at Proviso West in Hillside.

The Dukes finished with 38 points.

Batavia was a distant second with 74 points.

It was York’s first regional title since 2011.

York freshman Michaela Quinn took third with a time of 18:12.80, while sophomore Brooke Berger was fourth in 18:18.11. Sophomore Bria Bennis took eighth with a time of 18:51.07, while junior Katelyn Winton was 11th at 19:12.49 and freshman Katherine Klimek was 12th in 19:17.35 to round out York’s scorecard.

York’s 1-5 runners had a 1:04.55 split.

The win comes on the heels of the Dukes winning the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title.

York returns to action Saturday to wrap up its season at the Class 3A Lyons Township sectional at the South campus in Western Springs.

There is no state tournament this year due to the pandemic.

The Knights are headed right back to the sprawling Harvest Christian campus Saturday to complete their season in the Class 1A Harvest Christian sectional.

The York girls cross country team recently won the Class 3A Proviso West regional title in Hillside. The Dukes had five runners finish in the top 12, including freshman Michaela Quinn, who finished third, and sophomore Brooke Berger, who took fourth. The Dukes go for the trifecta (conference, regional and sectional titles) Saturday at Lyons Township South campus in Western Springs.

Real Estate/Business Citing a resurgence of Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic cases and hospitalizations, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker on Wednesday, Oct. 21 announced new mitigations in Regions 7 and 8 (including DuPage County) that will again shut down indoor dining in restaurants and bars, effective Friday, Oct. 23, at 12:01 a.m.

The new restrictions are based on Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) data that shows both regions with a seven-day rolling average test positivity rate of eight percent or higher for three consecutive days, which exceeds the threshold set in the state’s Restore Illinois plan.

Following is more detail of the restrictions:

• Tables should be 6 feet apart • No standing or congregating indoors or outdoors while waiting for a table or exiting • No dancing or standing indoors • Reservations required for each party • No seating of multiple parties at one table

Bars • No indoor service • All outside bar service closes at 11:00 p.m.

• All bar patrons should be seated at tables outside • No ordering, seating, or congregating at bar (bar stools should be removed)

Meetings, social events, gatherings • Limit to lesser of 25 guests or 25 percent of overall room capacity • No party buses • Gaming and Casinos close at 11 p.m., are limited to 25 percent capacity, and follow mitigations for bars and restaurants, if applicable

Restaurants • No indoor dining or bar service • All outdoor dining closes at 11:00 p.m.

• Outside dining tables should be 6 feet apart • No standing or congregating indoors or outdoors while waiting for a table or exiting • Reservations required for each party • No seating of multiple parties at one table
