After 14 months, remains of missing Elmhurst resident, UA exec found

Contractors make discovery deep in forest preserve where car was located

On the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 24, the Independent learned that the remains of Elmhurst resident and United Airlines executive Jake Cefolia had been found Jake Cefolia deep in the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Lemont, where his vehicle had been abandoned 14 months ago.

According to several news sources, including NBC Channel 5 News in Chicago, DuPage County Forest Preserve Police Chief David Pederson said that on Friday, Oct. 22, contractors were working in the wooded area removing invasive species, when they found what appeared to be human remains hung from a low hanging tree branch.

“The human remains were located in a very thickly covered brush area – extremely -- so you could be 10 feet away and not see it,” Pederson told NBC 5.

According to a release from DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen, a forensic odonatologist confirmed the remains to be Cefolia’s after examining his dental records.

Jorgensen released the identity of Cefolia, 50, after an autopsy was performed on Saturday, although a

cause and manner of death have not yet been determined and remain under investigation, the release said.

The history of a missing person In its Aug. 20, 2020, issue, the Independent brought its readers the news that the then-49-year-old senior vice president of Worldwide Sales for United Airlines had last been seen on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 6.

After several family members reported that no response had been received from calls and text messages over a few days, Cefolia’s ex-wife went to his home to check on him and then reported him missing to police.

Cefolia’s Range Rover Sport had been discovered in the Lemont forest preserve parking lot, where he often went for a run or to hike the trails. Officials from the DuPage County Forest Preserve District began a search for Cefolia, using not only Illinois law enforcement, local police and K-9 units but over 100 volunteers who came out to help.

A Facebook page set up for those concerned about Cefolia drew 1,600 members.

COVID-19 boosters important in the fight to end the pandemic Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) unanimously recommended expanded use of a booster dose of the Moderna and Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the CDC, all three COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective in reducing the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death, even in the midst of the widely circulating Delta variant.

Individuals who received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months ago and meet criteria below are eligible for a booster shot.

• 65 years and older; • Age 18+ who live in long-term care settings; • Age 18+ who have underlying

medical conditions; • Age 18+ who work in high-risk settings; • Age 18+ who live in high-risk settings.

Individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine are eligible for a booster if they received the vaccine at least two months ago and are 18 years or older.

Availability of the COVID-19 Pfizer booster remains widely available throughout the county. Boosters for those that received their initial series of Moderna or Johnson & Johnson are expected to be available starting this week.

The DCHD encourages residents to talk with their primary care provider about their eligibility for the booster.

The DCHD has re-opened the community vaccination clinic at the DuPage

County Fairgrounds and is currently offering Pfizer booster shots only to individuals who completed a Pfizer vaccine primary series at least 6 months ago. “It remains our top priority to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible, with vaccines being one of the keys” stressed Executive Director Karen Ayala.

The clinic is open Mondays and Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to noon; walkins are welcome. Residents can also visit www.vaccines.gov to find a provider.

While boosters are important for several reasons, a top priority continues to be vaccination of those not yet vaccinated, including those not yet eligible who are under the age of 12 as well as their parents and caregivers not yet vaccinated.

The journal Pediatrics recently published a study which estimated 140,000 children have lost a parent or caregiver due to COVID-19 in the United States between April 1, 2020 through the end of June 2021.

This tragic number has risen in the past three months and is estimated to be around 175,000 today; the majority of these children come from racial and ethnic minority groups.

“It is staggering to think about these children who are now without a parent or caregiver due to the impact of COVID-19,” said Ayala. “We must continue to use the tools available to us to protect ourselves and end this pandemic. We encourage everyone who is eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine and/or the COVID-19 booster.”

The Elmhurst area 100+ Women Who Care awarded their third quarter 2021 donation to New Bikes for Kids.

The Elmhurst-based women’s giving circle selected this local non-profit organization to receive funding for their work to get bikes in the hands of local students who through individual circumstances do not own a bicycle.

“I am always amazed and humbled by the variety of noble and deserving charities brought to my attention by our 100+ women,” said Geri Sorrentino, one of the inaugural members of 100+ Women Who Care. “As a teacher in District 205 who enjoys cycling, I was thrilled that New Bikes for Kids was selected by the group to receive this donation. A new bike builds self-esteem, gives hope and encourage, and promotes a healthy lifestyle.”

Founded in 2007 by York alumni Lee and Amy Russin, New Bikes for Kids provides new bicycles, helmets and locks for children whose families are impacted by financial hardships due to job loss, illness, or other catastrophic circumstances. Some families have little left for extras, like a bicycle. The non-profit works with school staff in local communities to identify students who qualify for the program.

Ebrahim Moosa is the Mirza Family Professor of Islamic Thought and Muslim Societies in the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame.

On Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Founder’s Lounge of the Frick Center on the campus of Elmhurst University. Moosa will present “Madrasa: Traditional Islam in the Modern World,” this year’s al-Ghazali Lecture and part of the University’s Religious Literacy Project.

Moosa’s interests span both classical and modern Islamic thought, with a special focus on Islamic law, history, ethics and theology. At Notre Dame, Moosa co-directs Con-

tending Modernities, a global research and education initiative that examines the interaction among Catholic, Muslim and other religious and secular forces. The project seeks to generate new knowledge and greater understanding of the ways in which these forces interact in the modern world, and to advance collaboration for the common good.

University names inaugural VP for equity and inclusion On Monday, Oct. 25, Elmhurst University announced that, after a nationwide search, Bruce King will join the University to serve as its inaugural vice president for equity and inclusion.

King currently is the associate vice chancellor for racial equity at City Colleges of Chicago. Before that, he worked for 13 years at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where he served as vice president for equity and inclusion, assistant to the president. and chief diversity officer.

“I was impressed by the depth and breadth of Bruce’s experience in diversity, equity and inclusion work,” said President Troy D. VanAken.

“His core belief in the ability of higher education to provide transformative opportunities and experiences to students will make him an excellent fit for our campus.”

King says he was drawn to Elmhurst by its student-centered focus and academic approach.

“Elmhurst University has really thought about how you connect a traditional liberal arts education to the professional world—to career and vocation,” he said. “The University also understands its relation to Chicago, and the potential of harvesting benefits and opportunities from that relationship. In many ways, this role for me is just ideal.”

He is eager to begin building relationships on campus and will look

into the creation of an established multicultural space for Elmhurst’s diverse student body.

King has led diversity, equity and inclusion work in higher education for more than three decades. At St. Olaf, he served as a member of the President’s Leadership Team, providing strategic insight and management for college policy and practice on inclusion, equity and diversity across the campus.

King earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Iowa and his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University. He will begin his role at Elmhurst in early January of 2022.

Police beat

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Persons charged with domestic battery are not named in order to protect the privacy of victims. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a conviction, and that subjects are considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Juveniles age 17-or-younger are not named.

Battery Oct. 19 Carlando J. Hurt, 47, of Hammond, Ind., was issued a citation for battery in the 400 block of N. Oaklawn at 8:10 p.m. According to police, a victim told police that while officiating a softball game, the suspect threatened him and struck him with his shoulder.

Oct. 16 A victim told police at 5:08 p.m. that during a fight involving juveniles, a juvenile suspect punched the victim several times. Officers observed a large welt on the victim’s forehead. The suspect admitted to punching the victim several times. The suspect was taken into custody, transported to the police station and was released to his parents pending a juvenile petition.

Criminal damage, criminal trespass Oct. 14-Oct. 15 Police said a member of Elmhurst Lions Club reported that an unknown suspect cut off two master padlocks which secured the donation box at the Lions Club pumpkin sale sometime between the above dates. The complainant does not believe any money is missing from the box.

Domestic battery, domestic incident, disorderly conduct, disturbance Oct. 16 Joseph L. Taglia, 41, of Glendale Heights, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct in the 100 block of Elmhurst at 10:45 a.m.

Police said a victim related he was alarmed and disturbed after Taglia aggressively approached him, clenched his fists and yelled at him.

Oct. 14 A complainant in the 300 block of Larch told police at 1:34 a.m. that the suspect yelled at him and struck him. The suspect related as she leaned over the complainant, the complainant struck her. There were no signs of injury to either subject. Due to conflicting statements and no visible signs of injury, no arrests were made. The suspect left the residence for the evening.

DUI, DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, illegal possession of alcohol, consumption of alcohol by a minor Oct. 19 Cory D. Piotrowski, 30, of Carol Stream, was charged with DUI subsequent to officers responding to the parking lot in the 600 block

Oct. 16 Colin J. Camblin, 22, of Itasca, was charged with DUI and being improperly parked on a roadway subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at 3:20 a.m.

Mohammed S. Rashid, 23, of Lombard, was charged with DUI, no insurance, unlawful use of cannabis by a driver, speeding, improper lane usage and transportation of open alcohol subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Route 83 at 1:54 a.m.

Rudy G. Ramos Velazquez, 34, of Addison, was charged with DUI, transportation of open alcohol by driver and driving the wrong way subsequent to a traffic stop near North and I-290 at 1:07 a.m.

Possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance Oct. 21 Holland J. Richardson, 20, of Burlington, Iowa, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis, two counts of endangering the life of a child, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, reckless driving, driving too fast for conditions and no insurance in the 200 block of N. Elm at 12:15 a.m. Two juveniles who were in the vehicle were both cited for violation of curfew and turned over to their parents.

Oct. 16 Duglas A. Cifuentes Hernandez, 21, of Bensenville, was issued a citation for unlawful use of cannabis in a vehicle in the 100 block of Addison at 2:44 a.m.

Theft or burglary/ identity theft/fraud/ forgery/deceptive practice/obstruction/ robbery Oct. 20 A complainant at a pharmacy in the 100 block of N. Robert Palmer told police at 8:39 p.m. that two unknown suspects placed cigarette packs inside of a bag and fled the store. The suspects were last seen in a red older-model four-door sedan heading southbound. This case is pending investigation.

Oct. 18 Robert S. Cairo, 20, of Elmhurst, was charged with burglary at a restaurant in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at 1:05 a.m. Police said officers observed a shattered glass entry

door and checked the area for Cairo, who was located and taken into custody. During this investigation, police said Cairo was found to be in possession of a watch, TV monitor, and an Xbox One gaming console. According to police, Cairo admitted to entering a victim’s unlocked vehicle and stealing a watch and a tote bag containing a 15-inch monitor and an Xbox One. He was charged with burglary and theft.

Theft was reported in the 600 block of N. York at 6:30 p.m. A victim told police she had her cell phone shipped to the above address.

An unknown suspect signed for it. An investigation is pending.

A victim in the 500 block of W. Grand told police at 3:57 a.m. that an unknown suspect described as a white female helped the victim with her luggage and items. The victim believes the suspect stole two wallets containing her driver’s license, Social Security card and credit cards. The victim found there were several unauthorized withdrawals from her bank accounts. The driver’s license and Social Security card were entered into LEADS. An investigation is pending.

Oct. 17-Oct. 18 Theft of vehicle parts was reported in the 100 block of E. Van Buren. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed the catalytic converter from his vehicle while it was parked in front of his residence sometime between the above dates.

Oct. 17 Robert S. Cairo, 20, of Elmhurst, was charged with residential burglary and aggravated robbery in the 300 block of S. Scott at 3:37 p.m. Police said a reporting officer met with the victim who reported that Cairo entered her residence without permission while holding a knife. According to police, Cairo stated the victim’s son owed him money.

Police said Cairo then demanded the victim provide him with prescription drugs. Cairo reportedly left the area but was later located and placed under arrest.

Theft was reported in the 300 block of E. Van Buren at 11:58 a.m. A victim reports while at Butterfield Park, his wallet was taken by unknown suspect. Upon returning home, he received text notifications of several unauthorized purchases using his credit cards. The victim canceled his credit cards. The victim’s driver’s license was entered into LEADS. Oct. 14 Identity theft was reported in the 100 block of N. York at 10:28 a.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect gained unauthorized access to her bank accounts and made two fraudulent withdrawals.

Violation of an order of protection Oct. 19 A victim in the 100 block of S. York told police at 5:47 p.m. that she and her daughter have an order of protection against the suspect. The suspect drove next to the victim’s daughter and spoke to her as she walked home from school. Attempts to reach the suspect were unsuccessful. An investigation is pending.

Warrant arrest Oct. 16 Police said that subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Addison at 2 a.m., Adrian Alvarez, 29, of Elmhurst, was found to have a warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Alvarez also was charged with suspended registration and no insurance.

Oct. 15 Police said officers responded to Elmhurst Hospital for the report of a subject who was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the premises. Police said Carolina Alcantra, 40, of Villa Park, left the hospital prior to police arrival. Officers located Alcantra and she was found to have a warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, according to police.

Officers and medics responded for a well-being check in the 500 block of W. Grand at 3:36 p.m. The victim was found to have a warrant from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and a warrant from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. The victim was released at this time, pending arrest.

UA officials noted that these details make the entire situation “even stranger.”

• On Thursday, Aug. 6, Cefolia returned from California and was seen at home by family and coworkers.

• On Friday, Aug. 7, Cefolia missed a corporate event, however, he was seen on video getting gas at around 10 a.m. and was also seen on video entering Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve, wearing hiking boots and khakis (NOT typically what a person would wear if going for a jog.)

• He took no traceable devices with him, as his cell phone and Apple Watch were both found at home. According to the missing person’s report filed by the DuPage County Forest Preserve officers, his abandoned car contained a COVID face mask, a gray pullover and, in the trunk, a set of golf clubs and $120 in cash.

• On Saturday, Aug. 8, Cefolia was reported missing.

• On Monday, Aug. 10, Cefolia’s family hired a private investigator.

• On Friday, Aug. 14 and Saturday, Aug. 15, extensive searches of the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve were carried out.

• During the searches, articles of clothing were found, which were turned over to police. The found shoes were confirmed not to be Cefolia’s, but it’s not clear if a shirt that was found belonged to him.

• A rotting smell was also reported, but that turned out to be a decaying deer.

• Cefolia was trying to sell his Elmhurst home. It hit the market on June 16, had a price reduction on July 16, and had a further price reduction on Aug. 4, two days before he went missing. It is unknown whether or not this information is significant to his disappearance.

Questions remain There are still questions about Cefolia’s disappearance.

Even though Cefolia has been missing and apparently deceased all these months, he was still somehow able to sell his house “in abstentia.”

According to a report from the York Township Assessor’s Office obtained by the Chicago Tribune, Cefolia sold his four-bedroom, two-bath home in Elmhurst for $523,000 in November after having listed it in June. It is unclear how Cefolia closed on the sale of his home in November, when he went missing in August.

Another question that remains is that Cefolia was reportedly under some sort of criminal investigation at the time he went missing. Several news sources have reported it but the nature of the investigation was never released by authorities.

Veterans Day Tribute at Elmhurst University On Sunday, Nov. 7, the Elmhurst University Wind Ensemble, American Legion T.H.B. Post 187, and the Martha Ibbetson Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, join together to present a family friendly Veterans Day Tribute for the Elmhurst community.

The tribute will be held at 12 noon in Hammerschmidt Chapel on the Elmhurst University Campus. The Elmhurst University Wind Ensemble will provide patriotic music and video presentations throughout the program, Elmhurst Mayor Scott Levin,

two veterans from the Elmhurst University Veterans Association, and others will speak. Adding to the color and pageantry of the event will be the American Legion Color Guard accompanied by the color guards and members of Elmhurst Boy Scout Troops 78, 82 and 117.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss in the United States, is a condition in which the portion of the retina responsible for central vision and seeing fine detail deteriorates. While age, low levels of certain nutrients, exposure to sunlight, cigarette smoking and obesity are all factors in the development of AMD, new studies confirm that genetics also plays a big role. Siblings of those with AMD are at a three to six times higher risk of developing AMD compared with the general population.

Oversight Committee Hearing on postal service delays in Chicago

By U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi I recently participated in an Oversight Committee hearing on the United States Postal Service (USPS) issues and delays in Chicago.

During the hearing, I highlighted the need to support the USPS and solve their problems of understaffing, delayed mail, and poor leadership. The delays in the postal service are significant, as one resident informed my office that their envelope took three weeks to travel from Evanston to Northbrook.

My questioning of Mack Julion, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers Local Branch #11, emphasized the extent to which the postal service has a chronic issue of understaffing. My questioning of Melinda Perez, acting assistant Inspector General For Audit in the Office of Inspector General, revealed that two of the lowest performing mail processing plants in the country are in the greater Chicago area.

During the hearing, I also noted my concern for the recent Oct. 1 service standard changes implemented by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy— which lengthened the delivery time for about 30 percent of first-class mail and packages.

Earlier this year, I introduced the Delivering Envelopes Judiciously Ontime Year-round Act, or DEJOY Act, to require the Postal Service to adhere to its traditional service standards.

I want to see the USPS continue its reliable, patriotic service to the American people.

Advancing and Promoting Programming (APP) Act I’m proud to report that on Oct. 12, I reintroduced the Advancing and Promoting Programming (APP) Act with U.S. Reps. Tom Jay Emmer of Minnesota, Danny Davis from Chicago and Jay Obernolte of California. The APP Act creates a database where Americans can find information on federal funding for the research and development of applications for web and mobile devices.

This legislation will actively

promote technological advancement and help American innovators as they create new applications. Between 2016 and 2026, employment in the computer and information technology field is expected to grow by 13 percent.

As someone with a background in engineering, supporting our future technology leaders is especially important to me. In the post-pandemic economy, the APP Act will be crucial in supporting the innovation and growth of our technology field.

My Veterans Essay Contest and Wounded Warrior Fellowship I am excited to announce the inaugural Veterans Day Essay Contest! My office is asking local students to write a short essay about a veteran who has inspired them.

This can be a veteran from your own life, or one from U.S. history.

This contest is open to students in the eighth-12th grade from schools in the 8th Congressional District.

Cullerton spearheads measure creating Veterans’ Accountability Unit

In response to the preventable deaths in Illinois veterans’ homes from COVID-19 and legionella over the past several years, State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D- Villa Park) sponsored a measure to create the Veterans’ Accountability Unit, which passed the Senate recently.

“After the tragic COVID-19 outbreak at the LaSalle Veterans’ Home last year, it is imperative that the agencies charged with helping our veterans have proper oversight,” said Cullerton, chair of the Senate Veterans Affairs committee. “The Veterans Accountability Unit provides an

extra layer of transparency that can help prevent future issues.”

The legislation, House Bill 359, creates the unit, with offices to be housed in Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs buildings and veterans’ homes. The unit will be tasked with reporting complaints and recommendations from veterans, IDVA employees and other Illinois residents to the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor.

Additionally, the unit will establish a toll-free helpline and email, maintain regular office hours and

create an annual report that includes a summary of complaints and actions taken in response to them.

“The Veterans’ Accountability Unit will make sure our veterans have even more seats the table when it comes to their care in Illinois,” Cullerton said. “We must continue to do what we can to make sure the veterans who have sacrificed so much are properly supported.”

HB 359 passed the Senate last week and will now move to the House for further consideration.

Bill adds another layer of protection for crime victims More survivors of violent crime will be able to keep their home addresses private as participants in the Illinois Address Confidentiality Program under a new law by state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton (D-Western Springs) that expands protections for survivors of human trafficking.

“Violent crime survivors undergo substantial emotional and mental trauma,” Glowiak Hilton said. “By adding human trafficking to the list of crimes protected by the ACP, we’re offering survivors some peace of mind that their sensitive personal information is safe and protected against abusers.”

Glowiak Hilton’s law strengthens the ACP managed by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office by allowing

survivors of human trafficking to participate and keep their addresses private.

Originally, the ACP was established to protect the locations of domestic violence survivors. Last year, Glowiak Hilton supported a law expanding protections for survivors of sexual assault and stalking, and she has now expanded the law to allow human trafficking survivors to opt in as well.

Currently, the ACP provides survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking and their household members with a substitute address to use in place of their actual home, school and work addresses in public records. This helps survivors prevent their former abusers from

being able to locate them.

For example, the ACP substitute address can be used by participants when creating or updating public records, such as a driver’s license or state-issued identification card.

“Expanding the ACP is an integral part of a safety plan for survivors to feel protected in their communities,” Glowiak Hilton said. “This proposal works to ensure survivors have a sense of security to allow them to heal without fear of retaliation from their abusers.”

Senate Bill 593 goes into effect Jan. 1, 2022.

Bruce Mather has dedicated his life to his faith, his family, his vocation and his community. A 1965 graduate of York High School, he worked his way through college and grad school as a youth minister and a part-time employee at Elmhurst Hospital. Through various positions of increasing responsibility at Elmhurst Hospital, he found that he enjoyed engineering, developed his technical knowledge, his organizational and leadership skills and his love for working with people. This prompted him to become a licensed engineer.

As the hospital’s first Risk Manager he designed a program that became a model for the American Hospital Association (AHA).

In 1980 he became the Executive Director of Facilities Management at Elmhurst College. As a forward-thinking leader, Mather worked with the City, the Park District, District 205 and others to transform the college campus into a beautiful and welcoming environment. These

Dr. Rachel Elliott grew up in Elmhurst and attended Hawthorne Elementary, Sandburg Junior High, and York High School. While at York, she participated in band and gymnastics. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Iowa State University in 1989.

Her first post-college job was supporting fighter jets in Texas. Since then, she has worked on commercial aircraft with Boeing, on an airborne observatory for NASA, and many other commercial and military aircraft programs.

Since coming out as a transgender woman in 2013, Dr. Elliott has been an advocate for LGBT persons, and has facilitated support groups for transgender youth and adults. She testified before the Utah legislature in 2014 in support of employment and housing rights for LGBT persons.

She partnered with the U.S. Department of Justice to provide transgender awareness training to members of law enforcement and has advised

many public and private organizations. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of the ACLU of Utah, seeking to protect the constitutional rights of all Americans.

Dr. Elliott’s passion is lifelong learning, a trait first instilled in her by the faculty at York. She enrolled

in graduate school in 2009, and completed her M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2011, and her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2021.

Rachel is married to her wife, Michelle, and currently lives, with their dogs and chickens outside of San Antonio, Texas.

The college’s newest residence hall received national recognition as a LEED-certified Gold building for its green initiatives.

Mather has been an officer in a national engineering association and president of a regional professional group assisting mid-sized colleges in their facilities programs. He has served several churches as board chairman including his church of 2800 in Geneva where he developed a new campus.

Jewish studies scholar to address Elmhurst University Malka Simkovich is the Crown-Ryan Chair of Jewish Studies and director of Catholic-Jewish Studies at Catholic Theological Union. The author of The Making of Jewish Universalism: From Exile to Alexandria (2016), Simkovich is involved in numerous interreligious dialogue projects to increase understanding and friendship between Christians and Jews.

On Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m., she will present “The Origins and Significance of Jewish Universalism,” this year’s Abraham Joshua Heschel Lecture at Elmhurst University. The lecture also is part of the University’s Religious Literacy Project.

Simkovich’s articles have been published in journals such as Harvard

Theological Review and Journal for the Study of Judaism, as well as online forums such as The Lehrhaus, TheTorah.com, and the Times of Israel. Her book Discovering Second Temple Literature: The Scriptures and Stories That Shaped Early Judaism (2018) received the 2019 AJL Judaica Reference Honor Award.

The annual Heschel lecture, named for prominent Jewish philosopher and theologian Abraham Joshua Heschel, focuses on the Jewish faith. A colleague of theologian and then-Elmhurst College alumnus Reinhold Niebuhr in New York, Heschel played a significant role in both the civil rights movement and in Christian-Jewish dialogue.

Pete had no bike to ride home. Bob wanted to help him, but Pete got REALLY scared, so Pete ran away.

Bob was sad, but he knew he had a bike in the haunted garage. So Bob ran back and got the bike and flew to Pete. Pete was still scared, but soon Pete got used to Bob. Pete got on the bike and fell (because the bike was really old). But then Bob helped Pete ride his bike home by pushing Pete.

The End. Night of the Living Jack-o-lanterns Elizabeth L., Grade 3 It was a very foggy Halloween night, and Lizzy was fighting with her brother, Alex over what the face should look like when they carve the pumpkin; once they finally decided on something they carved the face out of the pumpkin.

That night they put the jack-o-lantern outside in front of their house.

Lizzy was all ready to go trick or treating when she noticed that the jack-o-lantern was gone! When she

looked back in front of her, she saw that the jack-o-lantern was there, and it had become alive!

She noticed that all the jack-o-lanterns on her street had done the same and they were forming an army! All the jack-o-lanterns seemed to be mad that people had been carving pumpkins on Halloween for so many years.

She had no idea what to do! It seemed that they all were mad at her, even though everyone else had a part in carving them too. By now everyone else had come outside to see what was going on. The army of pumpkins seemed to be growing angrier, and they were getting ready to attack!

She swore to herself that she would never carve a pumpkin again!

And it seemed that everyone else was thinking they wouldn’t either. Lizzy decided to tell the jack-o-lanterns that nobody wanted the jack-o-lanterns to do this, and she promised that they would never carve another pumpkin again.

After that, all the jack-o-lanterns seemed to calm down a little bit, and slowly they turned back into normal jack-o-lanterns.

Dolls’ Playhouse Piper O., Grade 4 Phoebe stepped inside and turned back to her friends. Stupid dare. She didn’t want to go into the workshop, but although she thought it was creepy, she had to. She moved inside the workshop and noticed, in the corner of her eye, a dimly lit room. She shuffled inside and examined it.

A dust-covered doll was laying on a table in the middle of the room.

Cobwebbed shelves were everywhere. The doll had dusty black hair and was wearing a faded in color pink dress with a bow in her hair that was hanging on by a thread. Phoebe turned around, when a giggle came from behind Phoebe.

It sent a chill down her spine as she turned around slowly and saw the doll. It was no longer laying down, but sitting up holding a sewing string and a needle. When Phoebe’s friends noticed she hadn’t returned from their dare, they went inside the workshop and noticed the only room with a wide-open door.

They tip-toed inside and saw a doll on a shelf that looked like Phoebe and ran for the exit… but not before they too got trapped in what is now known as The Dolls’ Playhouse.

Guests at the breakfast hosted by Park Place of Elmhurst for the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI) have the opportunity to stand up and give their own “30-second commercial” for their business and themselves. Standing right is ECCI president and CEO John R. Quigley.

From 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Nov. 13 , “Pedal Power” will host a charity collection of gently-used, working bicycles at the former Stemples Cycle Center location (at 494 Spring Road in Elmhurst). In addition to the Elmhurst collection, Pedal Power will also be collecting bikes across 8 more collection sites in the Chicago area.

The new owner of the Elmhurst location that formerly housed Stemple’s has generously offered for Pedal Power to continue to use the location as a collection point. The new owner of the site is Roberto’s Ristorante & Pizzeria.

“Pedal Power” was created in 2008 by Nicole and Bennett Basil of Wilmette and involves the collection and distribution of outgrown, unused, and gently used bikes. The bikes that are donated to Pedal Power are inspected and then given to Chicago Public School students in lower income areas as a reward for earning good grades. For many of these kids, this is their first bike.

Over the past 13 years, bike collection points have been established in Wilmette, Palatine, Northbrook, Glenview, Lake Forest, Evanston, Winnetka, Skokie, and Libertyville.

Friends of the Basil’s, Grant and Lauren Schleiter of Elmhurst, decided that they wanted to extend this charity effort to Elmhurst in 2017.

Grant, currently a junior at Fenwick High School and his sister, Lauren, a freshman at University of Michigan

approached Stemple’s Cycle Center in Elmhurst about serving as a collection point and the bike center happily agreed.

Stemple’s closed in 2020 and the site was purchased by the owners of Roberto’s Ristorante and Pizzeria across the street. The owners of Roberto’s generously offered to allow the site to continue to be a collection point for Pedal Power. Pedal Power will perform quick safety checks on all of the bikes dropped off and will perform minor repairs, if necessary.

Over the past 13 years, more than 4,800 bikes have been donated to this cause.

With Nicole, Bennett and Lauren now in college, the new Pedal Power team is organized and operated by Grant Schleiter, a junior at Fenwick High School, and the brother sister team of Cailyn and Owen Fitzgerald, both sophomores at New Trier High School.

The CPS schools benefiting from the event include: • Cesar Chavez Multicultural Academic Center at 4747 S. Mashfield Ave. in Chicago; and • Northside Learning Center at 3730 W Bryn Mawr Ave. in Chicago. Any bikes needing greater repair and/or parts will be donated here to teach children with cognitive disabilities in its bike repair course. Every month, the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry holds a Membership Breakfast, hosted by a different member each month. On Wednesday, Oct. 13, Park Place of Elmhurst welcomed Chamber members and guests, offering special creations from their in-house chef. Besides fresh fruit, pastries and yogurt parfaits, there were baked potatoes stuffed with eggs, cheese and breakfast meats.

Making the decision to start exercising is the first step to a healthier life. Yet, starting can be quite confusing sometimes.

Where to begin? And how can someone remain consistent? Enlisting the help of a certified personal trainer can help answer these questions.

If hiring a trainer isn’t an option, here are some suggestions to stick with a workout routine: • Choose enjoyable activities.

Sticking with a workout can be easier if it incorporates enjoyable activities.

For instance, if someone hates running, they could try power walking instead. If staying on a cardio machine seems boring, take a cardio class instead. Get in some cardio outside instead of inside the gym—go for a bike ride, rollerblade, jog or go for a walk.

• Pick a time of day that works best. For some people it might be better to work out in the afternoon

or evening. Those who get tired as the evening approaches could try working out in the morning. If time is an issue, someone could bring a gym bag to work, then head straight to the gym after hours.

• Understand that setbacks can and will happen. People shouldn’t get discouraged if they miss a workout. What matters is that exercise resumes as soon as possible.

The longer someone stays away from the gym, the harder it is to get back.

• Choose to work out as a lifetime commitment. Many people decide to work out because they have a special occasion coming up, such as a reunion or a wedding.

The event comes and goes, and the person stops exercising. Look at exercise as a way of life—something that happens every day such like teeth brushing.

Juvenile charged with carjacking from Willowbrook Target store Accused has multiple pending felonies in other counties

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Willowbrook Chief of Police Robert Schaller have announced that a 15-year-old juvenile charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, a Class X felony, appeared at a detention hearing where Judge Anthony Coco ordered the juvenile to be detained until at least his next court date which was Oct. 21 for status.

The juvenile has also been charged with one count of obstructing justice, a Class 4 felony.

On Oct. 13 at approximately 2:45 p.m., officers from the Willowbrook Police Department were dispatched to the Target store located in the 7600 block of Kingery Highway for a report of a vehicular hijacking. Upon their arrival, officers spoke with the

female victim and initiated an investigation.

It is alleged that after the victim finished loading items into her vehicle, she was approached by the juvenile as she was about to enter the driver’s side door. It is alleged while pointing a gun at the victim, the juvenile told her, “Give me the (expletive) keys” and “look at the gun.” It is alleged that the juvenile continued to demand the keys to the victim’s car.

It is further alleged that after the victim gave the juvenile her keys, she ran back to the Target store and called 911.

The investigation led authorities to a nearby hotel where the juvenile was taken into custody without incident within one hour. At the time

of his arrest, the juvenile had multiple pending forcible felony cases in Cook County and one pending forcible felony out of Will County.

“For the second time, in a brazen display of violence, an innocent person became a victim of a vehicular hijacking from a busy store parking lot in the middle of the afternoon,” Berlin said. “What is particularly disturbing about the allegations in this case is that the accused is a 15-yearold juvenile, who currently has three pending forcible felonies out of Cook County and one forcible felony case in Will County.

Bond denied for man who allegedly shot at Lombard officer Suspect currently out on bond for armed habitual criminal felony in Cook

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Roy Newton have announced that bond has been denied for a Chicago man accused Romaine Turner of shooting at a Lombard police officer.

Romaine Turner, 21, appeared at a bond hearing where Judge Margaret O’Connell granted the state’s request that bond be denied.

Turner has been charged with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm (Class X felony), one count of armed habitual criminal (Class X felony) and one count of unlawful use or possession of a weapon by a felon (Class 3 felony).

While the officer was speaking with the men, another Lombard police vehicle pulled into the parking lot at which time Turner allegedly fled on foot.

It is alleged that one of the officers followed Turner when he fled.

It is further alleged that as Turner ran, he appeared to be holding an object while he was running.

It further alleged that Turner ran around the corner of a building and that as the officer rounded the corner, Turner raised a hand gun in the direction of the officer and fired one shot towards the officer.

It is alleged that after firing the shot, Turner continued to flee.

Turner was taken into custody later that morning while officers were conducting a search along West St. Charles Road.

“There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that Mr. Turner should have been given a cash bond the first time he was charged as an armed habitual criminal,” Berlin said. “Providing a twice convicted felon the opportunity to post a relatively small bond, just $2,500 in Mr.

Turner’s next court appearance is scheduled Nov. 9 for arraignment in front of Judge O’Connell. Both Class X felonies are non-probationable and if found guilty, Turner faces a penalty of between 10 to 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Gov. JB Pritzker on Oct. 19 urged eligible Illinoisans to get a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot and called on skilled nursing facilities to make booster shots available to patients and staff by Thanksgiving.

Currently anyone who received the Pfizer vaccine and is over 65 years of age or at higher risk of COVID-19 because of their jobs, living conditions or underlying medical condition should get a booster shot of the same vaccine.

Last week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was set to rule on the same recommendation for people in those age and risk groups who received the Moderna vaccine.

For those who received the onedose Johnson & Johnson shot, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is recommending a second dose for all age and risk groups at least two months after the first shot was received. The CDC could officially accept those recommendations this week as well.

“We’ve been lucky enough to live with vaccines so long that we often forget how much disease we’ve prevented, but millions of lives are saved across the world each year because of vaccines,” Pritzker said during a COVID-19 update in Chicago.

From June to September, Pritzker said, citing a report from the Kaiser Family Foundation, “approximately 90,000 COVID-19 deaths among U.S. adults likely would have been prevented if they had chosen to get vaccinated.”

The Illinois Department of Public

Health is partnering with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Illinois Department on Aging to promote boosters and support skilled nursing facilities in administering them.

IDPH will base an outreach campaign on where outbreaks are occurring and the CDC’s social vulnerability index, which uses 15 U.S. Census variables to identify communities that might need support before, during or after disasters.

The administration encouraged all skilled nursing facilities to host a vaccine booster clinic by Thanksgiving, and said IEMA can, with a request for assistance, mobilize its community partners vaccination program to support those efforts. IEMA has hosted more than 4,000 vaccine clinics through the community partners program since vaccines became available.

The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs “is prepped and ready to bring booster shots into every home as soon as they are eligible,” Pritzker said, noting most in those facilities received the Moderna vaccine.

Families of others in long-term care should call the facility to ensure boosters will be made available.

IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike said the CDC could soon decide whether mixing different available vaccine types is advisable, but the current recommendation is that a person should receive a booster from the same manufacturer of the shots they were given during the first round of vaccinations.

“IDPH is currently working on additional training for COVID-19 vaccine providers that will cover booster doses by type, as well as planning for upcoming vaccination for the children under the age of 12,” Ezike said.

Federal court throws out June legislative maps, declines to send issue to bipartisan commission Allows further arguments on replacements passed in September

A three-judge federal court panel in Chicago ruled Oct. 19 that the legislative redistricting plan that Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law in June— before official 2020 U.S. Census numbers were available—was unconstitutional because the population variances among districts violated the “one-person, one-vote” doctrine.

But the court did not, as Republican officials had hoped, order that a bipartisan redistricting commission be formed to redraw the maps. Instead, it declared the second set of maps that Pritzker signed in September, following a legislative special session, to be a “starting point” in developing a new map, and it invited plaintiffs in two cases challenging the redistricting process to propose

their own solutions.

“Challenges to redistricting maps are routine. They occur every 10 years, like clockwork, during each census cycle,” the court wrote. “As this case and countless before it illustrates, parties need time to compile a record; courts need time to issue a ruling; and on occasion one or another aspect of a redistricting plan needs revision to comply with the law.

Sometimes the revisions are minor.”

That opinion set the stage for the next phase of the two lawsuits that were filed in June, arguing that the legislative maps that Democrats pushed through the General Assembly in the spring violated the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.

ations are not unconstitutional and courts are reluctant to wade into, much less to reverse, partisan maps, including those that amount to political gerrymanders,” the judges wrote, citing a 2019 U.S. Supreme Court case. “And we are not so naive as to imagine that any party in power would decline to exercise levers available to it to maximize its opportunity to retain seats in the General Assembly.”

But the court also had some harsh criticisms for the process used to pass the second set of maps, including the fact that the public was given only a few hours to review those maps before they were voted on in the House and Senate.

“Taking into account the totality of the circumstances—both agreed and disputed—we will proceed therefore toward the approval of a map for Illinois legislative districts for the next decade using the September Redistricting Plan as a starting point, but also carefully considering the legal challenges raised in the operative second amended complaints,” the court wrote.

Both the Republicans and the MALDEF plaintiffs have argued that the second set of maps is unconstitutional as well, in part because they reduce the number of Latino-majority districts in both the House and Senate, even though the Latino population grew substantially between 2010 and 2020.

McConchie and Durkin issued a joint statement calling the decision a victory.

“During this process the Republican caucuses consistently demanded transparency and fairness in mapmaking, which were rejected by the Democrats and Governor Pritzker,” they said. “The court’s ruling validates all the concerns that were raised during the Democrats’ unconstitutional attempt to gerrymander Illinois.”

The court gave the plaintiffs until Nov. 8 to submit their proposed revisions to the second set of maps, along with a statement explaining how those revisions would cure any constitutional defects. Defendants then have until Nov. 18 to respond to those proposed revisions.

Harmon issued his own statement following the decision.

“I am gratified that the court recognized that the General Assembly, in unique and unprecedented circumstances, did what we could do in May to fulfill our constitutional obligations, and did what we should do in September to ensure our maps are constitutional,” he said in a statement distributed by a spokesperson. “The Republicans’ preferred remedy was indeed “far-fetched.” Now, the Republicans finally need to put forward their own maps instead of simply complaining about ours.”

The next status hearing in the case is set for Nov. 5.

The Elmhurst Cougars 16U Younglove softball team recently won the Melrose Park 16U fall league championship.

The Cougars were 12-4 winners over the Park Ridge Pistols in the championship game. Elmhurst scored three runs in the first inning sparked by a leadoff home run from Lauren Ligouri (Bartlett High School).

The Cougars scored runs in every inning except one. Maylin Nunez (Taft High School) singled during a six-run fourth inning where Amanda Drew (Hinsdale Central), Laney Ledbetter (York) and Kennedy Joe (Nazareth Academy) all drove in runs. Joe also belted a home run against Park Ridge.

Eighth-grader Gia Valentin closed out the game by holding Oak Park to no runs over the final 3 2/3 innings. Ledbetter (2-for-2), Joe (3for-3) and Valentin (3-for-3) starred at the plate.

Olivia Ligouri caught both games for Elmhurst, throwing out two would-be base stealers—effectively shutting down both opponents’ running games. Elle Klein provided strong defense at first base, while utility player Maylin Nunez has been a key contributor for the team at second base, shortstop and all three outfield positions. Nunez had a triple against Oak Park.

The Cougars were 21-6 over their first 27 fall games, finished 12-2 in Melrose Park action and had the No. 1 seed going into the playoffs.

The Timothy Christian girls tennis team had a couple of strong showings at the recent Class A state tennis finals.

In the singles division, Crystina Lee advanced to the consolation semifinals, posting a 4-2 record at state. Lee won her first-round match 6-4, 6-1 against Joliet Catholic, won her second-round match 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 against Peoria Notre Dame and

then won 6-1, 6-2 against Champaign St. Thomas More.

That sent Lee to the tournament quarterfinals (final 8) where she lost 6-0, 6-0 to Chicago Payton’s Maya Jha. Lee then downed a player from Danville 6-1, 6-0 in the consolation quarterfinals before losing to Grayslake Central’s Karishma Bhalla 6-3, 6-3 in the consolation semifinals.

The Timothy team of Clarissa Chen and Jane Carter also went 4-2, advancing to the consolation quarterfinals in the doubles tournament.

Chen and Carter defeated Dunlap High School 6-4, 6-0 in the opener and defeated Coal City 6-0, 6-0 in the second round before losing 6-1, 6-0 to Chicago Latin School in the third

round.

Isyanov was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Chicago Marist and a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Elk Grove before recording a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lake Zurich in the third round. Isyanov lost 7-6 (6), 7-5 to Stevenson in the quarterfinals (round of 8) and 6-3, 6-4 to Libertyville in the consolation quarterfinals.

The York doubles team of Bella Bjerkan and Lindsey White won two matches at state. They lost to Glenbrook South 6-4, 6-1 in the opener and then defeated Moline 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 and Highland Park 6-1, 3-6, 1210 in the consolation bracket before losing 6-2, 6-1 to Barrington.

Amelia Karr went 1-2 at state in singles action for the Dukes. She lost 6-3, 6-2 to Rolling Meadows, defeated Springfield 6-1, 6-0 and lost 6-1, 6-4 to Normal West.

Elle Duhig and Keira Polach went 1-2 in the doubles division. They defeated Lincoln-Way East 6-2, 6-3 in the opener and then lost 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 to Naperville North and 7-5, 6-2 to St. Charles East.

The Timothy Christian boys and girls cross country teams recently won Metro Suburban Conference Red Division championships at the conference meets held at Elmwood Park.

For the first time in school history, Timothy had 11 runners earn all-conference accolades.

On the boys side, Tyce Plaisier finished second in the race, while Ryan McKenzie was third. Luke Hubbard took fourth and Gio Molina ended in fifth. Alex Becker took ninth.

For the girls, Abby Bechtel finished fourth, while Chloe Leppink was sixth. Cailey Schuurmann was eighth and Katelyn Leonard finished ninth. Ella VanderMolen took 11th and Anthony Sarah FoxBucolo finished fires 12th. a pitch game.

In earlier action, both the Timothy boys and girls teams competed in

the Lisle Mane Event race. Timothy coach Erica Plaisier noted most of the program’s runners ran season-best times on the hilly 5K course.

Bechtel, a sophomore, was the Timothy girls’ top finisher with a time of 21:34. Hubbard, a junior, was the boys’ top finisher. Plaisier noted junior Juliana Norman “ran very strong in the heat and humidity,” she said. Norman won the girls open race.

IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball The IC Catholic Prep girls volleyball team recently recorded a 25-6, 25-12 win over Westmont. The win moved the Knights to 22-7 overall.

IC Catholic Prep finished second in the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division with a 10-1 record.

The IC Catholic Prep boys soccer team was rewarded handsomely for its strong play on the pitch this fall.

The Knights, who won the Metro Suburban Conference Red Division championship with a 5-0 record, placed six players on the all-MSC Red team.

That list included seniors Carlo Arena, Jason Hall and Antonio Serrano, along with juniors Seamus Reilly, Julian Salgado and Andy Schueler.

Junior Skander Tahri was named the MSC Red Division goalkeeper of the year.

In addition to going 5-0 in conference play, the Knights went 105-3 overall. IC Catholic Prep lost to crosstown neighbor Timothy Christian in double overtime in the regional championship. IC Catholic Prep had defeated Timothy earlier in the season.

In the Timothy game, coach Miguel Garcia noted his team played with 10 players the last 10 minutes

of regular time and in the overtime.

Statistically, Serrano led the team this season with nine goals and eight assists.

“We improved in all aspects,” Garcia said. “We had a winning record, we won the conference and also had the best keeper in all categories.”

Garcia said a lot of things surprised him this season. “Everything,” he said. “We had many, many ‘first times’ in program history.”

Garcia gave high praise, in particular, to the efforts of Serrano, Salgado and goalie Tahri.

“We surprised everyone this season,” Garcia said, “including ourselves.”

The York boys cross country team took fourth at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division championships hosted by Lyons Township.

York was fourth with 92 points.

Hinsdale Central won the title with 40 points.

Jeff Luka led York with an 11thplace finish in 16:04.19. Garrett Schwan finished 16th at 16:27.27, while Emmett Doyle was 20th in 16:30.79. Colin Lewandowski finished 22nd with a time of 16:33.59.

In earlier action, York competed in the Nike Twilight race in Terre Haute, Indiana. Contested at night in the rain, Summer finished 15th with a time of 16:30. Luka was 23rd in 16:38, while Schwan was 32nd in 16:43. Simon Hildy took 53rd in 16:58, while Lewandowski was 60th in 17:08. Doyle took 70th in 17:16 and Danny O’Shaughnessy was 71st in 17:16. York finished sixth as a team.

“The skies opened up during the warm-up and came down even harder in the last 15 minutes before the start,” York coach Charlie Kern noted in his alumni update. “Ethan, Jeff and Garrett were doing really well through two miles. We needed No. 4 and No. 5 to step up. It was in the last mile that we struggled to move up.

In the end, we finished sixth, much further back than we expected of ourselves. We will continue to work on the second half of our race in practice and become more prepared for our future opponents.”

York also competed in the Palatine invitational, a meet always loaded with the top teams in the state.

“The boys got out well and were positioned to strike in the second half,” Kern noted. “At the mile, I would estimate we were in second to New Trier and well ahead of Hinsdale Central. Unfortunately, we did not move as a group in the second half as we believed we could.

Ethan was the only one who was able to have a negative split. Our second-half finish vs. New Trier and Hinsdale Central was the difference in the meet. We did not finish aggressively and that is why we were third overall. Fortunately we have guys willing to work and I am optimistic there will be guys who will step up and fill the gaps we have.”

In the sophomore race, York was sixth. Iain Davies was 11th at 11:04.

Zach Brown took 20th at 11:18, while Aidan Lynch was 39th in 12:06. Walker Verwoerdt took 42nd in 12:17. Colin McCarty was 43rd in

York also competed in a race hosted by Peoria Central. Kern noted two athletes on the team met the time goal and earned a Fanta orange drink. Luke Lestina was 55th in 16:04 to lead York. Aidan Hill was 77th at 16:31. Jack Carroll was 106th at 16:51. Nick Kwentus was 116th at 16:55. Joel Kattoor was 118th in 16:57. Davies was 149th in 17:27 and Fernando Valdes-Nicholson 150th at 17:27. York finished 17th out of 34 teams.

Outlook: York is back in the state football playoffs in a big way. The Dukes won eight games and finished second in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division that was loaded with quality teams. York gave up only 104 points in nine regular-season games, yet that total is only third-best in the WSC Silver behind Glenbard West and Hinsdale Central. Minooka plays in the Southwest Prairie Conference West Division and finished third in that division. The Indians’ wins came against squads with records of 3-6 (Joliet West), Romeoville (1-8), Oswego East (6-3), Yorkville (5-4) and West Aurora (3-6). This one looks good for the Dukes.

Next up: Winner of this game faces the winner of Oswego East (No. 24 seed, 6-3) at Lincoln-Way East (No. 9 seed, 7-2). If seeds play out, the game would at York next week. Loyola Academy is the No. 1 seed in the tournament and is in York’s eight-team quadrant.

It was a banner day for the York girls and boys cross country teams.

Both squads walked away with Class 3A Proviso West regional titles, earning them spots in Saturday’s Class 3A Lake Park sectional at Lake Park East in Medinah.

The York girls cross country team won the title with 19 points. Glenbard West was second with 48 points.

Junior Bria Bennis won the girls Proviso West regional title with a time of 17:44.3 on the 3.05-mile course. Katelyn Winton was third in 18:07.1, while junior Brooke Berger was fourth in 18:17.8. Sophomore Michaela Quinn took fifth in 18:18.3 and sophomore Margaret Owens was sixth in 18:23.1. Sophomore Katherine Klimek was seventh in 18:28.6. Senior Allison Fitzgibbons took 15th in 19:33.0.

On the boys side in Hillside, York won the meet going away with 15 points. Glenbard West was second with 65 points.

IC Catholic Prep graduate Leslie headed to Le Moyne

Recent IC Catholic Prep graduate Bella Leslie wanted to head east for college.

Her landing spot ended up being at NCAA Division II Le Moyne College where the former Knights volleyball and soccer standout will continue her volleyball career at the Syracuse, New York school as a libero.

“All of the schools I was looking at were on the East Coast,” Leslie told the Independent last week. “I visited Le Moyne and really liked it. It reminded me of high school because it was a small school, and in a smaller school you will know a lot more faces than if I would have gone to a bigger school. The campus there is really pretty. It sits on a big hill and the scenery around it is great. Everything is pretty close together. They have very nice facilities. The volleyball program has good workout facilities and a nice locker room. I liked how modern it was.”

Leslie plans on studying nursing at Le Moyne. “They have a good nursing program,” she said. “As far as what kind of a nurse I want to be, I’m not quite sure yet.”

Leslie played volleyball and girls soccer at IC Catholic Prep all four years. She was a center-midfielder on the Knights soccer team.

Leslie’s volleyball journey started in the fifth grade, the first year she could play the sport at IC Grade School. She’s been playing club volleyball since seventh grade, most recently with the Chicago Elite group that practices out of Scores in Willow Springs and Montini High School in Lombard.

“I’m really excited to be able to play volleyball in college,” she said. “It gives me something to do.

I feel like I would be so bored without it because it has been such a big part of my life.”

Leslie said she has plenty of memories from IC Catholic Prep’s coach Nancy Kerrigan’s program.

“I loved playing there,” she said.

“I probably enjoyed school volleyball more than club because I love my team and the coaching staff was very supportive on and off the court. It made it a really good environment to be in. Coach (Kerrigan) was great. I have known her for a while. When I was little, I did all the little kids camps, and her daughter was in my brother’s grade at IC.” Leslie said she will miss plenty about IC Catholic Prep. “I will miss how close knit of a community it was,” she said. “I knew everybody at the school. It will be weird going on campus and not knowing all the faces. I’ll miss those close connections with the coaches and teachers. It will be weird for the first year or so.”

Leslie said pandemic life hasn’t been overly exciting, though her club volleyball team has started practicing again. “We have been practicing two or three times a week,” she said. “We are going to be starting tournaments again. Before that I haven’t been doing anything because senior soccer season and the club volleyball season were cancelled. We were supposed to go to a few club volleyball qualifiers in Grand Rapids and Louisville.

This summer, we have some tournaments planned over the next few weekends. They are little tournaments with all of the local clubs.

Nothing large and really local.

Other than that, I have been trying to work out a lot and stay in shape.

I’ve been running a lot, so I got into that. I try and run every day.”

been cancelled due to the pandemic. “I will probably leave Aug. 10-11 because it’s a far drive,” she said. “We had Zoom call with the team recently and they said they should have an answer about our season in the next 7-10 days.

They talked about three scenarios and what could happen like if we start the season and someone gets sick and we have to stop and go.

That’s one of the reasons why they are looking at moving the season to the spring. Right now the plan is to have a season, but we won’t know until the next 7-10 days.”

But if all systems are a go, Leslie can’t wait to take her skills as a libero to the next level with the Dolphins. “I feel like being a libero you have to be really quick and that is typically what I am good at.

I have really good reaction time,” she said. “I like diving on the floor and saving balls. It’s a really good feeling when you make a save. The position fits my personality, too.

You have to be the loudest one on the court. I have a loud personality.

You have to be pretty loud if you want to be a libero. I think I match that description.”

Stopka noted York has been doing conditioning drills and said the plan as of earlier last week was to start summer camp pending District 205 approval. “I have probably been able to meet 60 to 70 percent of the players so far,” he said. “If it does get approved that would be the start of our contact days with four days a week for three weeks straight. And even though the IHSA waived the blackout dates before the school year, we won’t take advantage of that. I’m pretty sure families have plans to do things before school starts. I’m the new guy and I’m not going to say you can’t go with your family. Go do it and enjoy it. This is a crazy and

Stopka will teach Spanish at York.

He taught Spanish and one math class at St. Pat’s. “My philosophy is I am more of a players’ coach,” he said.

“I have been a big Liverpool soccer supporter ever since 2015 when Jurgen Klopp came over and he’s known as a players’ coach. He’s kind of my coaching idol. I want to related to the players and form bonds with them.

I am more light-hearted and smiling. I like to have fun and joke with the kids. The goal is understanding where each player can be successful and the provide the best way possible to convey the knowledge they need at the position they play. I am not big

As far as the future, Stopka wants York competing at a high level on a consistent basis. “The short-term goal is to restock and build up the team,” he said. “A large portion of last year’s team was seniors, especially the starting 11. We have to make sure the now juniors are up to the speed of the varsity level and are ready to contribute. We want to keep that pipeline going with the younger groups of players. We want to make sure we are not only competitive, but that we are competing for regionals, sectionals and supersectionals.
