Jackie Haddad passes away at age 76

“Her graciousness and hospitality knew no bounds.”

That is just one of the quotes the many many friends of Jackie Haddad said upon learning of her Jackie Haddad death last week.

Jacquelyn L. “Jackie” Haddad, nee Rashid, of Elmhurst, passed away at the age of 76. Jackie was the beloved wife of Emil; loving mother of Michael (Michele) and Douglas (Kira), and Jacquelyn Haddad-Tamer; proud grandmother of Elise, Matthew & Andrew Haddad, Georgette & Joseph Haddad, and Elias & Gabriella Tamer; dear sister of William (Kathleen) Rashid; fond aunt, cousin and friend of many.

A lifetime of volunteering, helping others Jackie was well-known for her myriad volunteer endeavors, including serving as Past President of the Elmhurst Women’s Club, Past President of the Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation (ECAF), and a member of the Elmhurst Senior Commission. She was the recipient of the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, was Past President of York Township Republican Women’s Organization, a member of the First Ladies of Elmhurst and others.

Working on many endeavors to

end child abuse, she was on the Board of Metropolitan Family Services and served on the Board of Meld Young Moms (MYM), a program for unwed mothers in DuPage County.

“She loved people, she just loved to be around people,” her husband Emil said. “She was very active in our church, Our Lady of Lebanon in Lombard. She was also very active with St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.”

Jackie was proud to be able to rub elbows with a celebrity – Danny Thomas, who founded St. Jude’s Hospital.

“I served on the Board of Directors for the hospital and she was right there beside me the entire time,” Emil said. “She started the very first fashion show for St. Jude’s in the Chicago area. They’re huge events now.”

She also organized all of the local teenage marches for St. Jude’s.

“One year, Elmhurst raised more money per capita than any other community in the nation,” he said.

“That was quite an accomplishment for her to be recognized nationally.”

The community offers fond words for Jackie Haddad “She touched so many lives and cared about so many people,” said Heide Forbush. “I knew Jackie from the Elmhurst Evening Women’s Club, which is part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, we served at the local and DuPage County levels together. I knew her through ECAF, the Republican Women’s Organizations and the Elmhurst Senior Commission. She was one of the first

On Thursday, Oct. 18, the Independent was invited to sit down with Dr. David Moyer, superintendent for District 205 Schools to discuss the upcoming referendum that is on the ballot of the Election on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

The first point Dr. Moyer stressed was the many opportunities for public input offered to the community.

Among them were ‘Focus 205’ public meetings, which began more than a year ago. There also were telephone polls, an online interactive survey, an educational alignment study, large group meetings and other focus groups. Add to that the informational forums held at every school about the plans.

“It was our intention to reflect a combination of our building needs,” Dr. Moyer said. “What the community made clear is that they didn’t want to see some short-term fix, some Band-Aid solution, they wanted a master plan so that’s what we’re going with.”

The planning began with some basic realities – Lincoln is 103 years old, Field School is 87 years old. Dr. Moyer pointed out that some schools do not have media centers; Jackson and Jefferson have no air-conditioning; Churchville has no auditorium.

There are flood mitigation issues at various schools. He said Emerson and Field both take on water, there’s a field at Jefferson that “never drains,” and others.

The other reality to be faced is that not all the schools are as safe as they could be, particularly at their entrances. Moyer noted that when the older buildings were designed, there was virtually no worry about intruders.

Dr. Moyer said the biggest concerns raised by the public included the desire for all-day kindergarten and for space to allow increased STEM curricula, that is, science, technology, engineering and math.

“We considered what types of space would support student’s education to prepare them for the future,” he said.

Parity — the final part to plan “Then the final piece is the idea of parity,” he said. “Our schools were designed in different eras, they are all slightly different architecturally, with different lot sizes and other variables.

“We want students to have equal opportunities regardless of what building they are in.”

Staff specialists to oversee plan Dr. Moyer said District 205 had already hired a construction manager who will monitor the market and get the best possible price on all goods and services. He will obtain and oversee bids from contractors, which will be the primary way to stay within budget.

The District also brought Todd Schmidt on board as the new facilities director. In his previous position,

Schmidt worked with a $260 million referendum and brought it in on time and under budget, according to Dr. Moyer.

“With a plan, you have specified outcomes,” said the superintendent.

“Schmidt is studying the age cycle of each step along the way. He will coordinate all the information and we will be able to post updates at every school. There will be various phases of the project, staffing phases, design phases. We will have ongoing community involvement through subcommittees; we’ll seek input on the design, we’ll have an all-day kindergarten committee, we’ll keep parents involved.

“Everything is going to be out there for anyone who cares to pay attention.”

Recalling the 2006 referendum Dr. Moyer reminded that the School District was in a different place at the time of the referendum in 2006.

“In 2006, the District was facing budget cuts,” he said. “The Board at that time wanted to solidify the budget and they were more concerned with keeping money in the classroom so they didn’t spend anything on facilities. We budgeted $1.5 million a year on facilities, but we have been very sensitive to our fund balances and any way to preserve the programs the community wants us to save. But trying to get by on $1.5 million per year isn’t enough any more.”

Dr. Moyer was quick to point out that not having enough money for facilities was not due to neglect or mismanagement by the Board or staff, but rather to prioritize the classroom and thus, the students.

Does that mean the District 205 administration building will not be used for the transition students?

“No. First of all, the transition students need to be on the first floor, that’s all there is to it,” he said. “Even if we did move the program back to this building, we’d put it on the first floor, but then move the administration to the second floor. Even then, that is not the best solution – for either [the program or the administration].”

About the increase in property tax It needs to be said that the District 205 School Board has already saved the taxpayers $13.6 million through refinancing.

“Those are dollars the taxpayers will not have to pay,” he said.

If the referendum passes, Dr. Moyer said they plan to stagger the bonds with three different dates of issuance, so that as existing bonds fall off, a new one will fill in.

“We would finance the project to coincide with the construction. That way the money’s available and the plan will unveil as the dollars are allocated. The plan takes us through the duration of the financing.

“In the long run, it’s going to be more affordable than if we did things piecemeal. We want to get it all done and get it done right.”

The District 205 Referendum on the November 6th ballot will read as follows: “Shall the Board of Education of Elmhurst Community Unit School District Number 205, DuPage and Cook Counties, Illinois, build and equip two school buildings to replace the Field and Lincoln Elementary School Buildings; build and equip additions to and alter, repair and equip existing buildings, including but not limited to improving security, providing STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) facilities, improving energy-efficiency and technology infrastructure and adding classrooms for full-day kindergarten; improve sites; acquire, improve and equip a building for educational purposes and acquire the site thereof and issue bonds of said School District to the amount of $168,500,000 for the purpose of paying the costs thereof?”

“In the future, we’ll be looking back and realize it was a big mistake to leave that out.

“When we think from an academic and a social/emotional standpoint on education, all-day kindergarten is a part that is missing from our programming. We must at least develop a path to get there. We thought that was important to be included in the ultimate concept.

“The community asked us to really look forward so if we’re going to do something this comprehensive, we’ve got to get it all in there. We need to prepare for what kids will need down the line.”

At the City Council meeting on Monday, Oct. 15, Aldermen voted 11-3 to direct City staff to gather plans and specifications for electronic message signs to be installed on the underpass bridges on Palmer Drive. The measure was a recommendation of the Public Affairs and Safety (PAS) Committee.

The funds are provided in the FY2018 Budget to purchase and install the signs to replace the existing banners, which must be installed weekly by the Public Works Department. At this time, with the banner program, schools, charities, churches, etc., have to make a request to the City to have their banner placed on a certain week.

Requests are so numerous, they need to be made more than a year in advance to secure the desired week.

Signs would increase safety Another issue with the banner program is that a Public Works crew must close two lanes of traffic every Monday in order to safely remove the banner and install the new one. It requires a two- to four-man crew and at least two, sometimes three trucks. The process, including labor, materials, equipment and manpower, costs the City about $415 per week or about $22,000 per year.

The committee pointed out that there would be an immediate increase in public and employee safety if Public Works didn’t have to close lanes of traffic and install the banners.

Also, it would be less expensive for charitable groups because they would neither have to purchase banners nor transport and store them. Copy for the signs could be emailed directly to the City and placed in the software that runs them.

Aldermen weigh in “The electronic sign is a great idea

for safety reasons,” said Alderman Scott Levin (5th Ward), who chairs the PAS Committee. “We could use them for emergency notices for flooded roadways, Amber Alerts, etc. No more changing the banner, disrupting motorists, using the old cloth banners.

This offers more flexibility and visibility. And, we can use it to list more than one event at a time. We could promote multiple groups.”

Alderman Noel Talluto (4th) disagreed.

“I’m going to have to vote ‘no’ on this,” she said. “We have our web site, we’re on social media, we have a City Marketing Director, we have a lot of communication out there already. My solution is no sign at all. We should weigh the benefits of this location, the benefits weighted against the reduction in character and the safety risk.”

“I asked myself, does it match the character of the area, and I think it does,” said Ald. Dannee Polomsky (3rd). “But we need to encourage development for a healthy downtown and I don’t think an electronic sign is going to add to it, considering what we’ve spent lately.”

More questions need answers “I support the measure, but before supporting the purchase, I’d like to know the general guidelines of operation with computerized signs,” Ald. Mike Brennan (7th) said. “Will it be on 24/7? How frequently will message circulate? What is the life expectancy of this sign? What can we expect in terms of long-term maintenance?”

Ald. Michael Bram (3rd) agreed, noting this is not the first time City Council has discussed electronic signs.

“Private businesses have requested signs, are they distracting? We can debate both ways,” he said. “Do they fit in Elmhurst? I actually like the oldtown feel of the banners, but I recognize their limitations, the safety issues for public works employees.

“But I have the same questions as Ald. Brennan. While it IS in the 2018 budget, there are a lot of unanswered questions. We hold these signs to specifications. I would have liked to see more detail in the report.”

Bretl joins Board of Community Bank of Elmhurst The Board of Directors of Community Bank of Elmhurst has announced the appointment of Joshua E. Bretl to the Bank’s board.

City seeks volunteers for Historic Citizens appointed Preservation Commission to new Public Arts Commission

In June, the City of Elmhurst put out a request for volunteers to serve on the newly-established Elmhurst Public Arts Commission. The Commission is charged with implementing a citywide plan for the promotion and thoughtful placement of public art such as sculptures, murals and paintings.

At the City Council meeting on Monday, Oct. 15, the City Council voted to approve Mayor Steve Morley’s appointments to the new Commission. Serving terms to expire April 30, 2019, are Gene Evans, Chris Miller and Kristin Sabatino; serving terms to expire April 30, 2020, are Annette Armstrong, Rosalyn Long and John McKinnon; and, serving terms to expire April 30, 2021, are Betsy Goltermann, Suellen Rocca and Val Stewart.

Among its tasks, the Commission will create an inventory of existing public art in the City; work with Explore Elmhurst and others to create promotional materials; identify locations for new, permanent public art installations; and, identify resources and facilitate donations to defray costs related to new installations.

The City of Elmhurst is looking to fill vacant seats on the Elmhurst Historic Preservation Commission. The Historic Preservation Commission is a 7-member commission, appointed by the Mayor, and serves in an advisory role to the Elmhurst City Council. The Historic Preservation Commission meetings are on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m.

City residents who have an interest in the area of architectural history, building construction, engineering, finance, historical preservation, architectural preservation or real estate should apply. In addition to those interested in preservation, the Historic Preservation Commission is

required to have a licensed architect as a member. The licensed architect position is open.

Recent projects of the Historic Preservation Commission include architectural resources surveys of the Kenilworth-Arlington and York-Cottage Hill areas. The Historic Preservation Commission also reviews applications for landmark designations and any alterations proposed to existing landmarks.

Hospital Foundation’s Autumn Affair raises record amount The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital (EMH) Foundation raised a record $355,160 at its 14th Annual Autumn Affair on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago.

The gala, the largest fundraising event of the year for the Foundation, featured a live auction with auctioneer Jim Miller and music by The DJ Firm.

A portion of the proceeds from the 2018 Autumn Affair will support Elmhurst Hospital’s purchase of

the Uro-Nav Biopsy System and 3D Mammography for early and accurate detection of prostate and breast cancer, respectively.

The Elmhurst Police Department recently reported the following arrests and citations.

Oct. 13 Dominic Gonzalez, 19, of Chicago, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near First and York at around 11:21 p.m.

Assault, battery

Oct. 16 A victim in the 900 block of S. Swain told police at around 8:10 a.m. that a suspect confronted her regarding previous issues and began yelling at her. The suspect reportedly moved aggressively towards the victim and the victim placed her hand on the suspect’s shoulder to put distance between them. Both parties were advised to have no contact with each other in order to avoid future confrontations. Due to conflicting stories, no arrests were made.

Criminal damage

Oct. 13 A victim in the 800 block of Bryan told police at around 5:51 p.m. that an unknown suspect damaged the overhead garage door at her residence. A reporting officer observed a garage door was pushed inward. The damage appeared as if a vehicle drove into the door.

Police said an officer responded to Berens Park at around 7:37 p.m. for a report of youths vandalizing the park district building. Officers arrived to find a group of juveniles fleeing on foot. Officers were able to locate several of the juveniles who were involved the incident, which is under investigation to determine the responsible parties.

Oct. 12 Police said officers responded to a report of kids damaging items in the 200 block of S. Route 83 at around 9:40 p.m. Upon arrival, an unknown male suspect reportedly slammed a shopping cart into a victim’s parked vehicle.

The victim does not wish to pursue charges if the offender is located.

DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, open alcohol in public, consumption of alcohol by a minor, public intoxication

Oct. 15 Bastien Dias Da Costa, 39, of Elmhurst, was charged with DUI and damaging city property in the 400 block of Parkside at around 12:52 a.m.

Oct. 14 Adam Jankowski, 24, of North Aurora, was charged with DUI and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and the Canadian Railroad at around 3:57 a.m.

Oct. 13 Denise Fields, 35, of Westmont, was charged with DUI, possession of cannabis, speeding and improper lane usage subsequent to a traffic stop near Roosevelt and Euclid at around 12:38 a.m.

Katheryn Samuelson, 28, of Northfield, was charged with DUI subsequent to a suspicious vehicle with a flat tire in the 600 block of S. York at around 12:53 a.m.

Oct. 12 Daniel L. Jacobs, 35, of Yorkville, was charged with aggravated DUI-drugs, driving while license revoked, leaving the scene of an

Harassment, threats

Oct. 13-Oct. 14 A victim in the 100 block of S. Prospect told police that she and the suspect had a previous dating relationship. The suspect arrived on campus unannounced and gained access to the residence hall where the victim lives. The suspect attempted to gain entry to the victim’s dorm room, but was unsuccessful. The suspect fled the campus after security was notified. He remained in the area, returned to the residence hall where he gained access, and remained in the bathrooms overnight. He was later seen in the campus parking lot sitting in his vehicle.

The suspect then left the area but has since made threatening statements toward the victim. And investigation is pending.

Oct. 18 Kathleen Photirath, 25, of Elgin, was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and tinted windows subsequent to at traffic stop near Grand and Lake at around 12:54 a.m.

Oct. 17 Sergio Carrera, 19, of Hillside, was issued citations for possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding and no insurance subsequent to a traffic stop near Emory and Fremont at around 8:13 p.m.

Stephanie Munoz, 23, of Franklin Park, was charged with possession of cannabis, driving while license suspended and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near North and Berteau at around 12:53 a.m.

Oct. 16 Anthony V. Fondren, 22, of Chicago, a passenger in a vehicle, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance subsequent to a traffic stop near North and West at around 12:29 a.m. Police said Fondren was found to be in possession of 11 MDMA pills.

Oct. 15 Cynthia Villagran, 19, of Melrose Park, a passenger in a vehicle, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 7:18 p.m.

Oct. 14 Emmett McEnroe, 20, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis in the 100 block of N. Berteau at around 1:36

Oct. 12 Josue Quintana Gonzalez, 19, of Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, no valid driver’s license and speeding subsequent to a traffic stop near Route 83 and North at around 9:47 a.m.

Oct. 11 Police said Elmhurst College security advised they responded to a complaint of an odor of cannabis coming from one of the dormitory rooms. Subsequent to a search of the room, a security officer located a baggie containing cannabis inside a desk drawer, police said.

Aaron A. Cannon, 20, of Elmhurst, was issued a citation for possession of cannabis.

Missing person

Oct. 17 A complainant told police they confronted the victim about not attending school for the past few days. The victim subsequently left the house, did not go to school, and was found to be in Wisconsin. The victim was later taken into protective custody by the Grafton, Wis. Police Department, which advised the complainant.

Suspicious circumstances

Oct. 14 Police said officers responded to a hotel in the 900 block of S. Riverside at around 3:28 p.m. for a suspicious circumstances report. A complainant told police that an unknown suspect described as a black male, approximately 5’10”, 180 pounds with a medium build, a thin moustache, wearing a black shirt, black Reebok sweatpants and a gold necklace with a basketball charm, was harassing the victim by repeatedly asking her on a date while following the victim to her vehicle. The unknown suspect eventually disengaged from the victim and walked back into the hotel.

Theft/burglary/attempted theft or burglary/identity theft/fraud/forgery/ deceptive practice/ obstruction/robbery

Oct. 17 Theft was reported at a business in the 700 block of Church Road at around 9:35 a.m.

Police said Officers responded to the above location for the report of a suspect who had possibly taken mail from the mailbox of the business after attempting to gain entry. The suspect was described as a black male, tall, wearing a blue flannel, black sweatshirt, and blue jeans who was seen leaving the area in a small black Hyundai.

Oct. 16 Identity theft was reported in the 500 block of S. Sunnyside at around 8 a.m. Police said a complainant, who owns a construction company, related he discovered two unauthorized charges on his bank account. The complainant contacted the bank which could not provide any additional information.

Attempted residential burglary was reported in the 500 block of N. Kenilworth at around

9:10 p.m. A victim told police that while lying in bed, she heard an unknown suspect(s) attempt to break into her rear entry door. She observed the exterior glass pane of the rear entry door was shattered, and a window screen was cut, but no entry was made to the home. The suspect had also entered a detached garage; however nothing was missing.

Breaking into a garage was reported in the 400 block of N. Howard at around 11:01 p.m.

A victim told police that he found the pedestrian door to his detached garage open and believes he locked it when he left in the morning.

Inside the garage, a tool box, several drawers and a cabinet were found open. A saw from the toolbox was located laying on the ground near the house. Nothing else appeared to have been taken.

Sept. 1-Oct. 15 Theft was reported at a fitness center in the 600 block of N. York. A victim told police that an unknown suspect removed U.S. currency from his wallet while it was in a locked locker at L.A. Fitness. The victim suspects he has been missing money from his wallet on several occasions. There were no signs of forced entry to the locker.

Oct. 14 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 7:21 p.m.

The store’s loss prevention officer reports that a juvenile suspect removed gym shoes, headphones and sweat pants from the store without paying. The suspect was released into his parent’s care. His bicycle, that his mother did not recognize, was put into evidence. Charges are pending.

Oct. 13 Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 3:57 p.m. A victim told police that a suspect described as a black male, about 23 years old, with blond hair, a light brown complexion, around 5’7”, 140 pounds, wearing a gray ski cap, a gray hoodie and black pants, entered the store, browsed through the display phones, then pulled an i-Phone from the display cord. The suspect fled on foot across St. Charles Road.

Attempts to locate the phone and suspect were unsuccessful.

Retail theft was reported at a store in the 300 block of S. Route 83 at around 7:32 p.m. The store’s loss prevention officer reports that a juvenile suspect removed a belt from the store without paying for the merchandise. The juvenile was cited for theft; then released at the scene to a family member.

Oct. 12-Oct. 13 Burglary to a vehicle was reported in the 600 block of N. Van Auken. A victim told police he noticed the rear door was ajar on his vehicle.

He also noticed the passenger side sliding door was also open and multiple items were taken from his van. The victim believes he left the vehicle unlocked overnight. There appeared to be no signs of forced entry on the vehicle.

Oct. 12 Theft was reported in the 600 block of N. York at around 9:21 p.m. A victim told police that an unknown suspect(s) removed his iPhone X from his locker while he was working out. The victim believes he locked the locker and there were no signs of forced entry and nothing else was disturbed.

Oct. 9-Oct. 12 Identity theft was reported in the 800 block of S. Fairfield. A victim told police that she was in Las Vegas on Sept. 30 where some-

Linda A. Kurzawa Longtime President of DuPage County Board of Health Last week, Executive Director Karen Ayala and members of the DuPage County Board of Health announced the passing of Linda A. Kurzawa. Kurzawa dedicated her time and energy to serving the residents of DuPage County for more than 30 years.

Known as a passionate advocate and public health leader, Kurzawa served as President of the Board of Health and the DuPage County Health Department since 1999, nearly one-third of the agency’s ex-

Kurzawa launched her community involvement in 1987 as a member of the Thorium Action Group (TAG) and was instrumental in achieving the clean-up of radioactive thorium in West Chicago and the surrounding area. In 1992, she was elected as the District 6 representative on the DuPage County Board and the DuPage County Forest Preserve District Board. While serving on the County Board, she also held the position of Chairwoman for the County Health and Human Services Committee.

An avid supporter of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Program, Kurzawa was honored as a “Local Hero” by BMW for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 2007.

Linda was devoted to her husband of 46 years, Dennis, her son Steve, daughter Leslie (Scott) Flatter, and four grandchildren.

Nybo named Caucus Chair

by Senate Republican Leader Brady calls Nybo invaluable member of leadership team Illinois Senate Republican Leader Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) has appointed Elmhurst lawmaker State Sen. Chris Nybo to the position of Caucus Chair.

“I am very grateful and honored to be appointed to the coveted post of Caucus Chair by Leader Brady,” said Nybo (R-24, Elmhurst). “The Caucus Chair plays a key leadership role in organizing and running caucus meetings and assisting the Leader in policy development.

“It’s an important position that requires attentiveness to detail and the ability to interact positively with my colleagues,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be entrusted by the Senate Republican Leader with these new responsibilities within the caucus.”

Nybo will assume the Caucus Chair position immediately and will begin work in his new position in the Senate during the November Veto Session.

Nybo supports resolution to bring term limits to Illinois State Sen. Chris Nybo (R-Elm-

hurst) said lawmakers should resurrect efforts to bring term limits for legislative leaders to Illinois government.

He cosponsored Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 2 when it was introduced in 2017 to permanently create leadership term limits via constitutional amendment by limiting the terms to five General Assemblies (10 years) for the Illinois Speaker of the House, President of the Senate, House Minority Leader and Senate Minority Leader. The resolution stalled in the Senate.

“Ten years is a long enough time to serve as a Leader of a legislative caucus,” he said Nybo. “That’s enough time for a lawmaker to have a positive influence as a legislative leader or in some cases a negative impact.

“For a legislative leader to stay in a position of power and influence for 20 or 30 years is just wrong, that’s not public service, it crosses the line into self-service. To effect real changes to Illinois government we need to revive the issue of term limits, have a real debate in the General Assembly and take it to a vote.”

According to the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, four out of five Illinois residents favor some form of term limits.

More crime news

Several cars ‘keyed’ during York game

There were five cases of criminal damage to vehicles reported on the evening Friday, Oct. 16 following the York High School football game.

Most incidents took place in the stadium parking lot at Clarence D. East field at Spring and St. Charles Rds. One complainant told police at around 10:48 p.m. that she parked

her unattended vehicle in the stadium lot during school hours. Later, she found a scratch extending from the rear tire well to the front passenger door. The damage appears to have been made by a sharp object.

Another victim told police that her son drove their Cadillac to York.

While it was parked in the lot, it was keyed, leaving scratches on the trunk and rear bumper area.

Another told police at around 6:54 p.m., his Acura TL was keyed the

passenger side.

A fourth complainant told police at around 7:08 p.m. that a subject keyed the passenger side of his Ford Crown Victoria.

In a fifth report, a victim told police at around 7:51 p.m. that his vehicle was parked unattended in a public parking lot in the 400 block of S. Spring.

Upon his return, he observed that his vehicle had scratch marks in the paint as if it had been keyed.

The League of Women Voters posed five questions to the candidates for County Board in Districts #1 and #2.

The Independent presents the replies to three of those questions.

The League of Women Voters posed five questions to the candidates for County Board in Districts #1 and #2. The Independent presents the replies to three of those questions. Some replies have been edited for length.

Liz Chaplin (D) replied: DuPage County’s headcount of 2,178 is down from 2,270 in 2010. I believe that any further reduction in staff would hurt services to the public and employee morale.

DuPage County is home to some of the highest paid elected officials in the state.

Place a 10-year salary freeze on all county elected officials. Eliminate pension benefits, health insurance and eliminate stipends for all county elected officials.

local universities and businesses that support young and upcoming entrepreneurs with a focus on small businesses. This is a good first step.

Currently 56.8 percent of DuPage County’s revenue source is sales tax, which includes the RTA sales tax that can only be utilized for transportation and/or public safety.

All of the collar counties Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will use the RTA tax for transportation, which according to the legislation is an appropriate use of the funds.

None of the RTA sales tax is used for transportation in DuPage County.

The RTA tax is integral to the funding of our roads and public transit.

Steve Nero (R) replied: These items are all extremely important to DuPage County. Economic growth and development all start with making sure the county is easy to do business with. In my professional life, I help communities do just this. I streamline processes & improve work quality all in the name of saving time for the developer. Improving their experience is essential to consistently attract investments.

Aside from that, we must make sure our fees are competitive and that the county economic development department has the tools in place to foster growth (incentives, outreach/ marketing programs, job training, etc.).

R.J. Lindsey brings Charles Dawes to life, WWI general and diplomat The major hostilities of World War I came to a halt on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, a moment in history brought to mind this year with deeper significance than ever. Veterans Day 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War, a “war to end all wars” that was one of the largest and deadliest conflicts in history.

On Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m., the Elmhurst History Museum invites the community to honor Veterans Day and learn about the history of the First World War with a performance by accomplished living history imperson-

ator R. J. Lindsey. Lindsey will bring to life the story of General Charles Dawes, a successful Chicago banker and businessman who was compelled to serve his country during WWI. At the seasoned age of 52, Dawes joined the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in France under the leadership of General Pershing. He famously coordinated American, British, Belgian, Italian, and French military requirements during the war, earning high honors from all five nations. After the war, he was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925 for his work on the Dawes Plan

for WWI reparations. Dawes also served as the 30th U.S. Vice President of the United States, alongside Calvin Coolidge from 1925-29 and he was appointed Ambassador to the United Kingdom in 1929.

The program takes place in the Elmhurst History Museum’s Education Center, located just south of the Elmhurst History Museum at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst. Reservations are required and may be made online

at elmhursthistory.org or by calling 630-530-6879. The program is free to members of the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation and $5 for non-members.

Fitness Formula Club hosts Chamber After-Hours

It was a pleasant evening on Thursday, Oct. 11, when members of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ECCI) gathered at the preview showroom of Fitness Formula Club (FFC) at 135 No. Addison, right across the street from the building, which remains under construction.

Besides members of the local business community, Fitness Formula Club staff, managers and regional administrators were on the scene to answer questions and provide information to encourage pre-registration for membership.

“We want to have people in the Club right away,” said Jeff Riney, vice president of operations for FFC. “We want to be up and running and have people engaged, we want to be busy right from the start so we’re a busy and energetic club right from the start.”

York Drama to present Peter and the Starcatcher

Has the world lost its magic? Peter and the Starcatcher, a prequel to the world of Peter Pan, believes in magic, creativity, and most of all, the imagination of young children who still have the ability to see the world as exciting, scary, and full of stardust.

Based on the 2004 novel, Peter and the Starcatcher by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson was adapted for the stage by Rick Elice. Peter provides a backstory for the characters of Peter Pan, Mrs. Darling, Tinker Bell and Hook, and serves as a prequel to J. M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy. After a premiere in at the La Jolla Playhouse, Peter transferred to Off-Broadway in 2011 and opened on Broadway on April 15, 2012.

“We are thrilled to be bringing this incredibly rich and creative story to the Elmhurst Community,” said York Drama Director Rebecca Marianetti.

“Storytelling is at the heart of our existence.”

IC Catholic Prep football team goes undefeated Knights bumped up to Class 4A playoffs

The two-time defending-state champion IC Catholic Prep football team is ready for the playoffs.

The Knights capped off an undefeated regular season with a 49-0 Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division win against Riverside-Brookfield.

The victory gave IC Catholic Prep its fifth MSC Blue/West division title in a row and guaranteed the squad a home playoff game this weekend.

The Knights now have won 22 conference games in a row dating back to 2014.

The Knights open the Class 4A state playoffs at Lewis Stadium at Plunkett Athletic Complex in Elmhurst either Friday or Saturday against Chicago Raby.

IC Catholic Prep, which won the last two state titles in Class 3A, moves up a class this time and earned the No. 1 seed in the upper half of the Class 4A bracket. Raby (4-54) is the No. 16 seed.

In the win against Riverside-Brookfield, Khalil Saunders completed all five of his passes for 60 yards and one touchdown. Tom-

The Knights ran for 464 yards on only 25 carries (18.6 yards per carry).

Sophomore Kyle Franklin ran eight times for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Khalil Saunders ran two times for 107 yards and one touchdown and had an 80-yard run.

Steven Crady scored a touchdown on an 80-yard run, while Rashad Sbeih had two carries for 74 yards.

Those 74 yards came on a touchdown run. Ryan ran two times for 46 yards and Will Cooke ran seven times for 31 yards.

Sbieh caught a 70-yard touchdown pass as well. Ryan Malek caught a two-yard TD pass. Franklin caught one pass for 12 yards, while Jacob Lytton caught three passes for 46 yards. Justin Hall caught one pass for nine yards.

Kevin Cooke and Koby Reed led the defense with six tackles each.

Khalil Saunders, Will Cooke, Larry Chavez and Corties Draper each had five tackles. A.J. Howard had two tackles for loss, while Robbie Calles and Chavez each had one tackle for loss.

Michael Johnson had three quarterback hurries. Kevin Cooke had two pass deflections and Draper caused a fumble.

Franklin now has run for 1,297 yards on 146 carries (8.9 yards per carry) with 22 rushing touchdowns.

Outlook: What’s not new: IC Catholic Prep is in the state playoffs again sitting on a lofty seed. The two-time defending state champions are 10-1 in their last 11 playoff games dating back to 2015. The Knights are 36-1 over the last three seasons and 47-3 since the start of the 2015 season. What is new? The Knights got bumped up to Class 4A this season after having been parked in 3A for their last eight playoff appearances. Remember the Knights’ 2008 title was in Class 2A, while the 2002, 2016 and 2017 state crowns came in 3A. Can the Knights make it titles in three different classes in the last 16 years? Smart wisdom says don’t bet against this team. IC Catholic Prep’s opponent Chicago Raby plays in the Chicago Public League Illini Land of Lincoln conference where it went 5-4 and 3-2 in conference play. The Raiders, who went 11-2 last year, have only one win against a squad with an above .500 mark (a 58-0

victory over a Chicago Urban Prep/Englewood team that went 5-4). It lost 43-0 to 9-0 Chicago Simeon and 40-0 to 7-2 Chicago Phillips. IC Catholic Prep is one of 33 undefeated teams left in the state.

Next up: The winner of this contest faces the winner of the No. 9 Stillman Valley (6-3) at No. 8 Dixon (6-3) game. A Stillman Valley win would send the Knights west toward Rockford in Week 2, while a Dixon win would mean another home game for the Knights in the second round. The other portion of that quarterfinal bracket has No. 13 Elgin St. Edward (5-4 and a familiar foe of IC Catholic Prep) against No. 4 Chicago Urban Prep/Bronzeville (8-1) and No. 12 Chicago Sullivan (6-3) vs. No. 5 Marengo (7-2). Looking further out, Coal City is the No. 2 seed in the top half of the 4A bracket with an 8-1 record. The bottom half has 9-0 Taylorville as the No. 1 seed and 9-0 Paris as the No. 2 seed.

The York boys cross-country team’s march to another state finals berth took its first steps recently.

The Dukes were third at the recent Class 3A Lake Park regional, which earned them a spot in next week’s sectional round where state qualification will be on the line.

York finished with 55 points, six behind West Suburban Conference Silver Division rival Glenbard West.

Sophomore Colin Hill led the Dukes with a sixth-place finish in 15:07. Junior Ethan Kern was seventh in 15:09, while junior Daniel Klysh took ninth in 15:12. Sophomore Sam Ayers was 16th in 15:34, while junior Michael Moriarty was 17th in 15:37. Junior Brian Pratt finished 19th in 15:38 and sophomore Mickey Vreeland was 27th in 15:56.

A week earlier, the Dukes won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title. It was the Dukes’ 51st conference title in less than six decades.

Coach Charlie Kern noted the course at Proviso West had some uncut grass and remnants of heavy rain in spots. Temperatures were in the high 40s with winds gusting into the upper 20 miles-per- hour range. “These conditions would play a role as they always do in cross country,” the coach said in his weekly update to alumni.

Lyons Township had its top five runners in the top seven by the 400-meter mark.

It was the program’s 51st conference title in less than six decades.

“The expected runners then made their way to the front but were reluctant to push the pace,” Kern noted. “The leaders hit the mile in 5:04.”

At the mile mark, Lyons and Glenbard were battling for first despite three York runners being in the top six. “Numbers four through seven were off the pace and needed to move up or No. 51 (conference title) would have to wait until next year,” Kern said. “By the 1.5mile mark we were still looking at third place and I made it clear a few of our athletes were not doing their job. This was the moment of truth—either do or don’t. Three Dukes made the choice to do. We closed very well the last half, but it took the entire last half to wrestle away a conference title from Glenbard West, which was the Illinois preseason No. 2 team.”

Ethan Kern won the race, his first individual varsity conference championship. Klysh took third, while the sophomore Hill was fifth.

Pratt, who had to win a challenge on Monday to make the varsity top seven, was fourth through the chute for the Dukes and finished 14th.

Kern, Klysh, Hill and Pratt were named all-WSC Silver. Moriarty was 17th and turned in the Dukes’ final score.

“Our first three runners were dynamite and exceeded the pre-meet goals of 2-4-6 and finished 1-3-5,” Charlie Kern said. “Michael’s finish helped seal the deal and No. 51 was brought back to Elmhurst.

The boys were very happy with the win, but understand that this is a stepping stone toward the ultimate prize.”

Kern noted the team was greatly inspired earlier in the week by

an appearance from former Dukes running standout Jack Driggs.

“Jack shared his thoughts on the privilege of being a Duke and the York mystique,” Kern said. “We were ready to race that afternoon, but had to wait until Saturday.”

York’s junior varsity also won the WSC Silver title at Proviso.

York edged Hinsdale Central 42-43 for the conference title.

“This race was important for many of our top runners because on the line was a chance to make the top seven,” Kern noted.

By the 800-meter mark, Will Yasdick and Johnny Brennan were in the lead pack. Yasdick ended up winning the race and helped secure the JV team title. Brennan finished third. “Johnny closed well,” said Kern. “It’s a remarkable accomplishment after having missed so much time this year due to injury

Tom O’Leary was 14th and Max Lupo took 16th. Yasdick, Brennan, Scibica, O’Leary and Lupo earned JV all-conference honors.

In the sophomore race, Vreeland went to the front from the outset and led for nearly 2.5 miles. He finished third behind a pair of Downers Grove North runners. “A pair of DGN runners stalked him, worked together and held Mickey off,” said Kern. “The top three finishers were timed in 16:46.6, 16:47.3 and 16:47. It was a great race for Mickey. Although he did not win, he showed the type of courage we will need on the varsity level.”

Freshman Jackson Geiger finished fifth in 17:15, while David Rosario ended up in seventh in 17:17. Freshman Eric Rutherford took ninth in 17:19. Garrett Schwan took 19th in 17:48. York took second as a team in the freshman race behind Downers North. “Behind Mickey, the freshmen and David Rosario were running great,” said Kern. “Eric Rutherford ran an inspired race. Had we kept our sophomore down we would have been victorious, but the bigger goal was to win the varsity race.”

In the freshman conference meet, Kern moved the team’s three top runners up to the sophomore race.

And as noted earlier, Pratt won the challenge for the seventh spot on varsity. “This then sent Mickey Vreeland back to the sophomore level,” Kern noted. “With Vreeland up front and sophomore David Rosario running very well of late, I decided to move Eric Rutherford, Jackson Geiger and Garrett Schwan up from the freshman team. This left the rest of the freshmen looking for a new leader.”

Kern noted the first one to assume that role was Emmett Doyle.

“Emmett did not participate in the summer camp and has had some minor injuries, but he is a competitor and I knew he would give his best,” Kern said. “Charlie Bianchi and Jonah Parayil also have spent time in our top-five freshmen group.”

Bianchi finished 27th for the Dukes at conference, followed by Parayil in 30th place and Doyle in 35th place.

The Timothy Christian girls tennis doubles dynamic duo of Abygale Ahn and Cassandra Lee made it to the podium once again.

Ahn and Lee finished third in the state for the second year in a row at the Class 1A doubles tournament held at various sites throughout the Chicago suburbs.

Ahn, a senior, and Lee, a sophomore, went 5-1 in the tournament to earn their second podium finish in as many seasons.

Ahn and Lee opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over the team of Adeline Larsen and Claire Tiemens from Chicago Christian.

Ahn and Lee then notched a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Troy Triad team of Caitlyn Smith and Gillian Rockwell.

In the third round, Ahn and Lee won 6-3, 6-2 over the St. Francis team of Marnie Kopec and Jane Price.

Cartis (23-14 in 2018) qualified for state by finishing third at the Class 2A Lyons Township sectional.

The Dukes finished second as a team in the sectional with 17 points behind only Hinsdale Central. Coach Tres Heimann noted the Dukes finished ahead of West Suburban Conference schools such as Lyons, Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South.

Cartis earned her second state tournament berth. “Melissa played with a lot of poise and was very consistent throughout the tournament,” said Heimann.

Sophomoe Gianna Nikoleit finished up her season with a 27-5 record and narrowly missed qualifying for state after losing a three-set match in the qualifying round against Downers South’s No. 1 singles player.

That loss snapped a 16-match winning streak for Nikoleit. “Gianna had a fantastic sophomore season,” said Heimann.

Nikoleit now has a 56-22 varsity record in two seasons at York. She recently was named the school’s athlete of the month for her play during September.

Cartis, who took third out of 20 players at Lyons, opened up with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Willowbrook and then defeated a Downers Grove South player 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals before losing 6-3, 6-2 to Hinsdale Central in the semifinals. Cartis won 6-4, 6-3 over a different Downers Grove South player in the thirdplace contest.

Nikoleit won 6-0, 6-1 against Lyons Township in the first round and then lost 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 to Downers South in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Aleksina Jovic and Jaci Riek won their opener 6-0, 6-2 against Willowbrook and then lost 6-2, 6-1 to Hinsdale South in the quarterfinals.

Isabella Nicoli and Eva Jacobsthal won 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and then lost 6-3, 6-0 to Downers Grove South in their second match.

In addition to Nikoleit’s 27-5 mark and Cartis’ 23-14 record, Annalise Soldano went 23-5, while Cristina Gamboa was 20-5. Rachel Kayman was 20-7 and Jacobsthal also joined the 20-win club with a 20-9 mark.

Micki Neidigh and Natalie Krauter each went 18-7. Nicoli went 16-10, while Jovic also won 16 matches and Riek won 13 contests.

IC Catholic Prep girls cross-country team wins regional title York girls second at Lake Park; Timothy girls second at Lisle

A year ago, the IC Catholic Prep girls cross-country team took second at the Class 1A Lisle regional.

A year later, the Knights moved up to the top position, winning the Class 1A Lisle regional title this past week-

end in convincing fashion.

IC Catholic Prep runs in the Class 1A Lisle sectional Saturday for a shot to go to the state finals meet in Peoria.

At Lisle, the Knights finished with 18 points, well ahead of second-place Timothy Christian, which had 44 points.

Freshman Kennedy Calcagno won the individual regional title in 19:36.

Freshman Carly Manchester was six seconds behind her in second place at 19:42. Sophomore Frankie Chaid-

ez, who finished third in the state last season as a freshman and won the Lisle regional title last year, was fourth in 20:55, while junior Annie Guinan was fifth in 21:16 and sophomore Alia Johnson was sixth in 22:00. Freshman Maggie O’Brien took 24th place in 27:24, while freshman Francis Cook was 25th in 27:33.

IC Catholic Prep had a 1:40 split between Manchester winning the race and Guinan crossing with the Knights fifth and final scoring time.

Timothy Christian girls cross country The Timothy Christian girls cross-country team placed second at the recent Class 1A Lisle regional and earned a berth in this Saturday’s sectional round also at Lisle.

The Trojans finished with 44 points behind first-place IC Catholic Prep’s 18 points.

Junior Hope Clark was the only runner to break up IC Catholic’s Prep

1-6 pack by placing third with a time of 20:51. Junior Elise Terpstra was eighth with a time of 23:00, while senior Jill Forgac took ninth with a time of 23:04. Freshman Paige Hoving was 11th at 23:56, while freshman Grace Lindemulder was 13th at 24:08. Senior Morgan Hoving was 15th at 24:23 and freshman Tegan Gunn was 18th in 24:52.

The Timothy Christian boys soccer team saw its season come to a conclusion after a 2-0 loss to Chicago University High in the semifinals of the Class 1A IC Catholic Prep sectional at Plunkett Athletic Com-

plex in Elmhurst.

The Trojans reached the sectional by winning the Class 1A Timothy Christian regional title at home.

Timothy downed Chicago Phoenix Military Academy 5-0 in the title game.

Carson Hooker had two goals and two assists to lead the way for the Trojans, while Jon Stremler, Josh Bode and Isaiah Whitaker each had a goal. Kyle Teune registered his 10th shutout in goal.

York girls cross country Also advancing to sectionals as a team is the York girls cross-country team which took second at the recent Class 3A Lake Park regional.

York finished with 47 points, only 13 points off the pace of regional-champion Wheaton-Warrenville South.

Senior Sarah May took fourth for York in a time of 17:41. Junior Lydia Hickey was eighth in 18:14, while freshman Katelyn Winton was 10th in 18:23. Junior Emma Kern took 12th in 18:29 and junior Grace Moriarty was 13th in 18:36. Freshman Kathleen Buhrfiend was 23rd in 18:56 and freshman Katelyn Leonard was 25th in 19:01.

last week. “We put a lot of pressure on their back line and created a lot of good opportunities. It was about getting a lot of numbers in the box and finishing.”

Timothy advanced to the regional final after an 11-0 win against neighbor IC Catholic Prep in the regional semifinals. Whitaker and Stremler each had two goals in the contest.

“We got ahead early,” said Zielke.

The coach was pleased with how his team performed in the first two playoff contests. “We are starting to put everything together and

we’re getting that finishing instinct that was lacking a little during the regular season,” he said earlier last week. “It seems to be coming out at the right time.”

Defense also took a step forward in the regional round. “Our defense is very solid on the back line and we have a very strong goalie,” said Zielke.

That back line featured right-back Mike Vogt, center backs Matt Van Zeelt and Andrew Vogt and left back Andrew Petrulakis “They communicate well and

cover for each other and are very disciplined,” said Zielke.

Timothy finished the season with a 12-10-1 mark.

York boys soccer The York boys soccer team went 1-1 at the recent Class 3A Hoffman Estates regional to conclude its season.

York defeated Elk Grove 2-1 in the regional semifinals at Hoffman Estates and then dropped a 3-1 decision to Addison Trail in the regional title game.

“The gutsiest race of the day came from Jacob who has been recovering from an ankle injury,” said Knights coach Jeff Fredrickson. “What I am particularly proud of our team is that each runner improved his time on that course from last week.”

Resident among CCU’s new Honors College The HTC Honors College and Center for Interdisciplinary Studies was established at Coastal Carolina University on Oct. 12, and the 700 students who had been accepted into the University’s honors program are now the first students housed in the new college. Among those students who are now a part of the HTC Honors College is Bridget Campbell, a marine science major from Elmhurst.
